Oscar de la Renta dies at 82 Associated Press

NEW YORK — Oscar de la Renta, the worldly gentleman designer who shaped the wardrobe of socialites, first ladies and Hollywood stars for more than four decades, has died. He was 82. De la Renta died at home Monday evening in Connecticut surrounded by family and friends and “more than a few dogs,” according to a handwritten statement signed by his stepdaughter Eliza Reed Bolen and her husband, Alex Bolen. The statement did not specify a cause of death, but de la Renta had spoken in the past of having cancer. “While our hearts are broken by the idea of life without Oscar, he is still very much with us. Oscar’s hard work, his intelligence and his love of life are at the heart of our company,” the statement said. “All that we have done, and all that we will do, is informed by his values and his spirit. Through Oscar’s example we know the way forward. We will make Oscar very proud of us by continuing in an even stronger way the work that Oscar

loved so much.” The late ‘60s and early ‘70s were a defining moment in U.S. fashion as New York-based designers carved out a look of their own that was finally taken seriously by Europeans. Pavement repair reaped concerned Bali Post

DENPASAR - Sidewalk repair on Jalan Hayam Wuruk Denpasar reaped a complaint. It happened because the project only worked on the outer parts. Meanwhile, the drain underneath was not handled properly. Even, there was no dredging, so that the sidewalk repair was feared to be fruitless.

It was confirmed by a legislator of the Denpasar House, Eko Supriyadi, at his office on Monday (Oct 20). His party was concerned with the workmanship that only heaped paving block on the existing sidewalk. “Supposedly, the drain must be dredged before making the repair, so that when rainy season comes, the drainage function can be maximized,” said Eko. Eko Supriyadi deplored the workmanship of the sidewalk along the Jalan Hayam Wuruk which was under progress only heaped the existing sidewalk. His party was not involved in the project. “Workmanship of pavement repair project is handled by the Bali Public Works. Indeed, it was not preceded with the dredging of drain, so that it is feared to annoy the function when the rainy season arrives,” he explained. On the other hand, the Highways Division Head of Denpasar Public Works, I Wayan Dirgayasa, said that generally all the projects using the regional budget 2014 had run smoothly. Although there were constraints due to vehicle density inhibiting the process of workmanship in the field, it could be overcome. In 2014, some projects worked on by the Denpasar Public Works had gone according to the plan such as the arrangement of city look, including the parks, telajakan (space in front of house compound), pedestrian as well as repair and improvement of roads and sidewalks along 17 kilometers with a total project value of IDR 56 billion taken from the main budget 2014. The project along 17 kilometers was divided into 7 packages. In

details, the packages included the improvement of road section along 1.4 km on Jalan Gunung Lumut, Jalan Gunung Cemara, Jalan Gunung Lempuyang and Jalan Gunung Selamet with the budget of IDR 2.8 billion. Secondly, the improvement of road and sidewalk along 4.6 km was located on Pulau Jalan Belitung, Jalan Pulau Saelus, Jalan Pulau Singkep and Jalan Pulau Moyo with a budget of IDR 15.6 billion. Then, it was resumed with the improvement on Jalan Pulau Kawe, Jalan Pulau Bungin, Jalan Pulau Enggano and Jalan Pulau Bangka Pemogan along 4 km long with the budget of IDR 13.7 billion. The other road and sidewalk improvement would was made along 2.2 km with the budget of IDR 9.7 billion on Jalan Gunung Batukaru and Jalan Gunung Rinjani, MonangManing. Then, it was resumed with the road and sidewalk improvement on Jalan Merak and Jalan Singosari along 1.5 km with the budget of IDR 3 billion. As well as the road and sidewalk improvement was carried out along 1.8 km on Jalan Gatot Subroto (Gatsu) IV, VI, VI-A and Jalan Suci with the budget proposal worth IDR 5.2 billion. At the end, the improvement was also made on Jalan Narakusuma and Jalan Pandu along 1.1 km with a maximum amount of budget worth IDR 2.3 billion. (kmb12)

33 percent of households in Bangli have no toilet

BANGLI - Thousands of households in Bangli County still do not have a private toilet so far. The Bangli Health Agency noted that among the total amount of 62,669 households in Bangli, only 67 percent of which had owned a toilet. Meanwhile, the other households still did not have toilet and met their needs arbitrarily like doing it in the bush and the river nearby. Similar condition was still

experienced by some residents of Landih village. Headman of Landih, Ketut Sedana, admitted that around 30 percent of the total population reaching 4,000 people still did not have a private toilet. So, they defecated indiscriminately in bushes. According to Sedana, most of the residents having no private toilet were classified into poor households (RTM). Although more residents had owned toilet, the presence of toilet could not be used optimally as the local village

was vulnerable to water crisis. Meanwhile, the Head of Bangli Health Agency, Wayan Sudiana, when asked for his confirmation on Monday (Oct 20) did not dismiss it. Sudiana added that to improve

the achievement of toilet ownership in Bangli, so far his party had disseminated the total communitybased sanitation program (STBM). The Health Agency attempted to provide an understanding on the role of private toilet ownership, so that finally there was people’s desire to have a toilet. “We also do this in the area with less toilet ownership. Here, we encourage their spirit to realize the private toilet ownership through mutual assistance,” he said. (ina)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

CUPERTINO — Apple unveiled a thinner iPad Thursday with a faster processor and a better camera as it tries to drive excitement for tablets amid slowing demand. The company also released an update to its Mac operating system and introduced a high-resolution iMac model that might appeal to heavy watchers of television over the Internet. The new iPad Air 2, at a quarter of an inch “thin,” also adds many of the features previously available on iPhones. That includes the ability to take burst shots and slow-motion video, and unlock the device with a fingerprint ID sensor instead of a passcode. Meanwhile, Apple made its new Mac operating system, Yosemite, available as a free download starting Thursday. The new 27-inch iMac — which Apple is dubbing the “Retina 5K” model — went on sale Thursday as well. The company also said Apple Pay, its new system for using iPhones to make credit and debit card payments at retail stores, will launch on Monday. GIANYAR - Mask craft has become one of the icons introducing Bali, particularly Mas village Ubud, to international community. Even, the mask craft by Wayan Muka has been exhibited in Romania, Europe and Singapore to represent Indonesia. “Mask craft of Mas village has represented Indonesia to Romania and Singapore,” said Wayan Muka, a mask craftsman. Wayan Muka doubling as the headman of Mas said the community had been involved in the mask craft since long time ago. Other than being sold to travelers, the mask works of Mas community had also been exported to all parts of the world. In the making process, the material used to make the mask was blackboard, hibiscus and Balinese frangipani wood. Particularly the making of sacred masks to be used at temple should be accompanied with certain rituals and determination of auspicious day. However, the profane mask for commercial needs did not require such condition. “For the mask used at temple, many things must be prepared. However, there are also customers themselves giving rituals to the mask and then it is carved here,” he explained. He described the making of mask was originally intended for

the purposes related to religious rituals like the worship of gods and presentation of mask dance. “The gods are believed to be present in the figure of the dancers that put on the mask with a variety of characters,” he said. Along with the development of time, nowadays the mask has a broader function than just a dance accessory. Definitely the masks for commercial purposes have undergone an evolution from the traditional style. For example, it is given a priority to the use of more attractive and vivid color as well as more beautiful design. To Wayan Muka, without the art of mask and sculpture, Gianyar would not survive. UBUD - On 8th century legend tells of a Javanese priest, Rsi Markendya, who meditated at the confluence of two rivers (an auspicious site for Hindus) at the Ubud locality of Campuan. Here he founded the Gunung Lebah Temple on the valley floor, the site of which remains a pilgrim destination. The town was originally important as a source of medicinal herbs and plants; Ubud gets its name from the Balinese word ubad (medicine). In the late nineteenth century, Ubud became the seat of feudal lords who owed their allegiance to the king of Gianyar, at one time the most powerful of Bali’s southern states. The lords were members of the satriya family of Sukawati, and were significant supporters of the village’s increasingly renowned arts scene. Tourism on the island developed after the arrival of Walter Spies, an ethnic German born in Russia who taught painting and music, and dabbled in dance. Spies and foreign painters Willem Hofker and Rudolf Bonnet entertained celebrities including Charlie Chaplin, Noël Coward, Barbara Hutton, H.G. Wells and Vicki Baum. They brought in some of the greatest artists from all over Bali to teach and train the Balinese in arts, helping Ubud become the cultural centre of Bali. A new burst of creative energy came in 1960s in the wake of Dutch painter Arie Smit (1916-), and development of the Young Artists Movement. There are many museums in Ubud, including the Museum Puri Lukisan, Museum Neka and the Agung Rai Museum of Art. The Bali tourist boom since the late 1960s has seen much development in the town; however, it remains a centre of artistic pursuit.

Places to visit

There are many places that can be visit in Ubud. The main street is Jalan Raya Ubud (Jalan Raya means main road), which runs eastwest through the center of town. Two long roads, Jalan Monkey Forest and Jalan Hanoman, extend south from Jalan Raya Ubud. Puri Saren Agung is a large palace located at the intersection of Monkey Forest and Raya Ubud roads. The home of Tjokorda Gede Agung Sukawati (1910–1978), the last “king” of Ubud, it is now occupied by his descendants and dance performances are held in its courtyard. It was also one of Ubud’s first hotels, dating back to the 1930s. The Ubud Monkey Forest is a sacred nature reserve located near the southern end of Jalan Monkey Forest. It houses a temple and approximately 340 Crab-eating Macaque (Macaca fascicularis) monkeys. Ubud tourism focuses on culture, yoga and nature. In contrast to the main tourist area in southern Bali, the Ubud area has forests, rivers, cooler temperatures and less congestion although traffic has increased dramatically in the 21st century. A number of smaller “boutique”-style hotels are located in and around Ubud, which commonly offer spa treatments or treks up nearby mountains. The Moon of Pejeng, in nearby Pejeng, is the largest single-cast bronze kettle drum in the world, dating from circa 300BC. It is a popular destination for tourists interested in local culture, as is the 11th century Goa Gajah, or ‘Elephant Cave’, temple complex. The Blanco Renaissance Museum is also located in the town. Hundreds of vehicle certificates alleged to be counterfeit secured Bali Post

Secretly the Directorate of Bali Police General Crime Investigator handled the fraud case in one of the rural banks (BPR) on Jalan Selamet, Kuta. Related to the case, police have confiscated 178 vehicle certificates (BPKB) alleged to be counterfeit as collateral in the BPR. Moreover, police also secured a perpetrator with the initial Wd. “Such a case was revealed about a month ago. Surprisingly, the case has not been exposed. The vehicle certificates were used as collateral,” said a source in the field, Monday (Oct 20). It was added if the case was still being developed, especially the origin of the vehicle certificates. Due to the act of the suspect Wd, the bank suffered losses worth billions of rupiahs. “Did the suspect (Wd— Ed) act alone or with his syndicate? It is still being explored by the investigators,” said the source. Everywhere he went, Obama got glimpses of a simpler time when his life was for the most part, normal: The unpaid bills on his desk, the volunteers who pitched in on his first Senate campaign, the day he marched in seven Fourth of July parades. But at each stop, Obama also confronted the likelihood that the resistance he’s faced so far will only grow steeper after the November elections in which control of Congress will be at stake. Obama’s overnight trip was intended to showcase the president on the campaign trail in one of the few states where he’s still popular enough to help his party: his home state of Illinois. But even Obama had to acknowledge that in the toughest races that Democrats are fighting this year, his party’s candidates would rather not be seen in public with the president.

“The bottom line is, though, these are all folks who vote with me. They have supported my agenda in Congress,” Obama said in an interview Monday for a radio show hosted by the Rev. Al Sharpton, a civil rights activist. Republicans pounced. After all, Democrats have spent the entire year trying to distance themselves from Obama, while Republicans argued a vote for a Democrat this year is a vote for Obama’s record and policies. Now Obama was making the Republicans’ point for them. Obama insisted his feelings weren’t hurt. ISLAMABAD — An antigovernment TV news channel in Pakistan was taken off air for 15 days after a high court ruled that the broadcaster was “maligning” the country’s judiciary, the country’s media regulation authority said. The closure is apparently linked to the infighting among Pakistan’s numerous media outlets over their coverage of the two-month-long anti-government protests demanding Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif step down over alleged election fraud. Most of the media have firmly aligned themselves either in support of Sharif’s government or in favor of the opposition, providing plenty of fodder for bitter reports and opinionated talk show hosts. The Pakistan Media Regulation Authority said on Tuesday that it was forced to act on a court order and shut down the private ARY News channel. PEMRA also said the court banned one of the broadcaster’s anchors, Mubashar Luqman, from appearing on any national TV. The ARY was also ordered to pay a fine of 10 million Pakistani Rupees, or $97,000. The high court in the eastern city of Lahore acted on its own in taking up the

case — what is known in legal terms as suo moto — and issued its ruling last week. ARY has been taking a distinctly pro-opposition stance in its coverage of the protest rallies, which are led by Pakistan’s famous cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan and cleric Tahirul-Qadri. Luqman, the banned anchor, was a prominent participant in the rallies, sometimes appearing in public with Khan during the former cricket star’s anti-government speeches outside the parliament. Hundreds of supporters of Khan and Qadri have been camped for several weeks outside the Pakistani parliament in Islamabad. ARY is said to have earned top ratings ever since it took up the popular anti-government narrative against its business rival Geo TV, which has long been Pakistan’s most popular TV channel. In June, PEMRA also banned Geo TV for 15 days after a spat between the broadcaster and the military’s powerful spy agency, the ISI. The intelligence agency had filed a suit against Geo TV, seeking its closure after it alleged that the spy agency chief was behind an assassination attempt against one of the station’s anchors, Hamid Mir.

WTO Doha deal to make world $11 trillion richer

GENEVA - Sealing a global free trade deal would add $11 trillion to the world economy and pull 160 million people out of poverty by 2030, economists said in a study published Tuesday. Member states of the World Trade Organization launched negotiations in 2001 in the Qatari capital Doha for a global deal on slashing trade tariffs and removing subsidies, but have failed to reach an agreement. Economists commissioned by think-tank Copenhagen Consensus Centre said however in a series of studies published Tuesday that such a global agreement would be an extraordinary investment. Implementing the deal would

not be free, the economists said but for every dollar spent on putting in place the agreement, countries could reap at least $2,000 in benefits. “The costs are very small,” Australian economist and lead author of the studies, Kym Anderson, told AFP. And the biggest winners would be developing countries, which tend to have the highest trade barriers -- with around $3,400 in return for every dollar spent there, they said.

“Our crude estimates show that by 2030, there will be 160 million fewer people in extreme poverty if (Doha) is implemented,” Anderson said. “You would end up with a huge gain,” he added. The WTO itself had estimated last year that a global trade deal could add several hundred billion dollars, or even over a trillion dollars, to the annual sum of global commerce. But over a decade of negotiations have borne no fruit as developed countries refuse to slash subsidies to farmers while developing nations refuse to bring down tariffs imposed on industrial goods. “There will be losers,” acknowl-

edged Bjorn Lomborg of the Copenhagen Consensus Centre, referring for instance to some European farmers who might see subsidies vanish. But they would by far be outweighed by winners, especially in developing countries, he said. “This could fundamentally change the world. We could make the world about 10 percent richer in 2030 than it would otherwise be, and make every person in the developing world $1,000 better off.” Lomborg and Anderson said they hoped the analysis would provide “a huge argument” for those pushing to restart the discussions on global free trade. US urges Japan to be bolder in opening markets

TOKYO — U.S. Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker is urging Japan to be bolder in opening its markets to help reach a deal on a pan-Pacific trade agreement. Pritzker, who is leading the Commerce Department’s first trade mission to Japan in two decades, said Tuesday that U.S. and Japanese negotiators were closing the gap on trade in farm goods and vehicles but that there were still “tough issues” to work on. “It is time for all of us to be bold. Incremental steps will not lead us to the high-standard outcome that we all agreed to pursue when we joined the negotiations,” Pritzker told a group of U.S. and Japanese business executives. She said “strong outcomes” were needed in both agriculture and auto trade talks to get a deal approved by the U.S. congress and Japanese lawmakers. Japan is the second largest source of foreign direct investment in the United States and its fourth largest trading partner overall. The 12-nation trade pact, called the Trans-Pacific Partnership, or TPP, is the centerpiece of President Barack Obama’s trade policy and his effort to shift U.S. strategic attention to Asia. Pritzker said it could yield tens of billions of dollars a year in economic gains and increased exports for each side. The pact, aimed at cutting tariffs and setting trade rules, is seen as a precursor to a future wide free-trade arrangement for the entire Pacific Rim region.

Yet, an agreement has remained elusive, with informal deadlines long passed. Critics of the plan say the negotiations are too secretive and are likely to favor the interests of big multinational corporations over those of ordinary consumers. In addition to the U.S. and Japan, other countries negotiating the trade deal are Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam. But a deal between the U.S. and Japan, the two largest economies, is considered vital to its success. Executives from 20 leading medical and energy technology companies paid thousands of dollars each to join the trade mission to Japan and South Korea, Pritzker’s first visit to Asia as commerce secretary. The last such trade mission to Japan was in the early 1990s, just as Japan’s economy was sliding into a two-decade long funk. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has made economic revival his top priority, with limited success. Asked why there was such a long hiatus in trade missions to the world’s third-largest economy, Pritzker said she was perplexed. A renewed effort by both countries, with President Barack Obama pushing for TPP and faster growth in exports and Japan promising faster economic reforms, is creating new opportunities, she said. “My feeling is that we need to take advantage of the kind of open door that’s being created by Prime Minister Abe and President Obama,” she said.

JAYAPURA - Two French journalists went on trial in Indonesia’s Papua on Monday accused of breaching visa regulations by illegally reporting on its separatist movement, a crime punishable by up to five years in prison. Thomas Dandois, 40, and Valentine Bourrat, 29, were detained at the start of August while making a documentary for Franco-German television channel Arte. They went on trial in Jayapura, the capital of Papua province, charged with breaking immigration laws since they had tourist, not journalist, visas. A prosecutor said they had admitted reporting while in Papua. Indonesia is deeply sensitive about journalists covering Papua, where a low-level insurgency against the central government has simmered for decades, and rarely grants visas for foreigners to

report independently in the region. Foreign reporters detained for illegal reporting in Papua have in the past been swiftly deported. However Dandois and Bourrat have already been in custody for more than two months, and if found guilty may face lengthy jail terms. Prosecutor Sukanda told the court the pair had entered Papua using tourist visas but had interviewed a separatist leader and reported on the activities of “an armed criminal group”, the term typically used by authorities when referring to separatists. “The accused were aware or knew that they were not allowed to use a tourist visa to carry out journalistic activities in Indonesia, and that they needed a journalistic permit... from the Indonesian government,” said Sukanda, who like many Indonesians goes by one name. “Both have admitted to having carried out reporting in Papua to find out

more about its society, customs, culture and history and also to find out why armed civilians were fighting against the government,” he added. Dandois was detained at a hotel in the city of Wamena with members of separatist group the Free Papua Movement (OPM), and Bourrat was detained shortly afterwards, according to authorities. The OPM has been at the forefront of the fight against the central government in the resource-rich but poor and ethnically Melanesian region. The French journalists declined to speak to reporters at the court. Their lawyer Aristo Pangaribuan said the charge was only two pages long and “not serious”, adding he hoped the pair would be deported soon. Bourrat’s mother Martine Bourrat was in court for the start of the trial, and told reporters: “I really hope my daughter can return home as soon as possible.”

JAKARTA - Joko Widodo, Indonesia’s first president from outside the political and military elite, got a rock-star welcome from a cheering crowd at a celebration marking his inauguration Monday but takes power facing challenges to enact an ambitious reform agenda. As night fell, Widodo, sworn in as leader of the world’s thirdbiggest democracy earlier in the day, ran on stage in front of about 50,000 supporters at a park in central Jakarta, grinning broadly and raising his hands in the air. “We must realise that Indonesia is a great nation but it has to be run well, it has to be run for the prosperity of the people,” said the leader, known by his nickname Jokowi and famed for his man of the people image. “I invite everyone in society to unite and work together to achieve what we have dreamt of -- creating a strong, prosperous and dignified Indonesia.” The inauguration capped a remarkable rise from an upbringing in a riverside slum for the 53-year-old former furniture exporter, who won the presidency in July after a close race against controversial ex-general Prabowo Subianto. Oscar Pistorius starts serving 5 year prison term

PRETORIA — Oscar Pistorius was taken away in a police van Tuesday to start serving a five-year prison sentence for killing girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. A South African judge cited the “gross negligence” the Olympic runner showed when he shot Steenkamp multiple times through a toilet cubicle door in his home when she delivered the sentence. Pistorius’ prison term begins immediately. Pistorius could be released after 10 months in jail to serve the remainder under house arrest, according to legal experts. Masipa also sentenced Pistorius to three years in prison for unlawfully firing a gun in a restaurant in a separate incident weeks before Steenkamp’s 2013 shooting death. She ordered that sentence to be wholly suspended for five years on condition that Pistorius is not found guilty of another firearm offense.

Masipa delivered her ruling after reviewing prosecution arguments for a tough sentence as well as the defense case for a more lenient punishment for Pistorius. She said it was a balancing act after defense lawyers had argued that Pistorius had already suffered emotionally and financially after what he called an accidental killing. Masipa last month convicted Pistorius of culpable homicide, but acquitted him of murder after he testified he mistook Steenkamp for a nighttime intruder. “The following is what I consider is a sentence that is fair and just both to society and the accused,” Masipa said as she announced her decision. She asked Pistorius to stand as she delivered the sentence, and

BANGKOK — The bodies of two South Korean tourists were found in waters near Thailand’s southern resort city of Phuket on Tuesday, two days after the tourist boat they were in collided with a fishing vessel, police said. Marine police and volunteer rescuers found and retrieved the bodies — a man and a woman — more than 30 meters underwater and under the wreckage of the tourist boat, police Col. Phrutthipong Nutchanart said. The tourist speedboat was carrying 44 foreign and Thai tourists and crew members from Phi Phi Island, which is famous for its white sandy beaches. Most of those aboard were rescued by marine police and villagers on boats.

The Thai speed boat driver was held by police for questioning and was initially facing charges of causing severe bodily harm by reckless act. “Now that a body is found, we will have to press the additional charges of causing death by reckless act against him,” Phrutthipong told The Associated Press. The tourists, who were mostly Chinese but included four Koreans. No one else was killed. Authorities said some of the survivors suffered broken bones and internal injuries. It was second fatal tourist boat accident in Thailand this month. Two Indian tourists drowned Oct. 5 after the boat they were in capsized in bad weather, also along Thailand’s southern Andaman Sea coast. The boat’s operator was charged with reckless operation of a vehicle.

BERLIN — A German court has rejected a bid by Lufthansa to force a union representing the company’s pilots to call off a strike, the latest in a string of walkouts over retirement benefits. The state labor court in Hesse,

which includes Lufthansa’s main Frankfurt hub, said Tuesday it rejected the airline’s suit and found no grounds to declare the strike illegal. The Vereinigung Cockpit union started a 35-hour walkout at Lufthansa’s short-haul fleet mid-Monday and extended it early Tuesday to the company’s long-haul services.

The two sides have been fighting for months over the pilots’ demand that Lufthansa keep paying a transition payment for those wanting to retire early. The airline, facing tough competition from European budget airlines and major Gulf carriers, wants to cut those payments.

Ubud Monkey Forest IBP

UBUD - The Ubud Monkey Forest is a nature reserve and temple complex in Ubud, Bali. Its full name as written on a welcome sign is the Padangtegal Mandala Wisata Wanara Wana Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary. The complex houses approximately 605 Crabeating Macaque (Macaca fascicularis) monkeys (39 adult males, 38 male sub adult, 194 adult females, 243 juvenile and 91 infants —2011—). There are four groups of monkeys each occupying different territories in the park. The Sacred Monkey Forest is a popular tourist attraction in Ubud, and is often visited by over 10,000 tourists a month. The forest comprises approximately a tenth of a square kilometer (approximately 10ha or 27 acres) and contains at least 115 different species of trees. The Monkey Forest contains the Pura Dalem Agung Padangtegal temple as well as a “Holy Spring” bathing temple and another temple used for cremation ceremonies. The Monkey Forest is owned by the village of Padangtegal, and village members serve on the Monkey Forest’s governing council. The Padangtegal Wenara Wana Foundation manages the Monkey Forest and serves to maintain its sacred integrity and to promote the sacred site as a destination for visitors.

The Frenchman, who is an ambassador for French car company Renault, reckons that despite the runaway success for Mercedes this season the competitive picture could be very different in 2015. When asked by AUTOSPORT if, despite its strong form, Mercedes could be beaten as early as next year, he said: “I think it can. “We have to wait first of all to define the regulations about the development of the engine, which is not easy. That is going to be quite

important. “When you have this kind of domination, it is going to be difficult [to beat it]: but not impossible. “The way you can make different things on the chassis is limited, but I think altogether, team and engine, they [Mercedes’ rivals] can do a better job.” Prost thinks that it was ultimately no surprise that Mercedes did so well this year, because it had been preparing much longer for the new regulations than its opposition.

“It was almost inevitable,” he said. “I am not talking about the gap in performance, but that Mercedes had the advantage because they started this project more than three years ago. “At the same time you had Renault fighting to be world champion four times consecutively. “And maybe it was more difficult to change the way you work, the way you invest and the way you manage things, especially when you have a complete change of rules, a new way of building engines and a new approach. It is very difficult to do both things together.

“That is why we always talked about that - how Mercedes would be difficult to beat this year. “They are also making the chassis and engine - and this is the year where it was also an advantage. “If you look at the way that the car is working, it is not only an engine - it is the whole package and integration.”

Engine Freez Prost also believes that it is important for the future health of F1 that a push to ease the engine freeze is successful. The fate of the rule change is currently in Mercedes’

hands - with a crunch vote due to take place at an F1 Commission meeting next month. But the German car manufacturer is fearful about a change resulting in a big hike in engine costs, so has indicated it will not support any tweak to the regulations. When asked for his views on the matter, Prost said: “If you have the engine fixed today, you have destroyed everything. “But if you give a lot of freedom cost issues are going to go up. “So you need to find a compromise. And it is very important to have the compromise.”
