On Sunday, actor Jon Hamm -- who has won raves for his portrayal of the seductive, mysterious Draper for eight years -- finally got his perfect ending when he won his first Emmy, for best actor in a drama. “It’s incredible and impossible for me personally to be standing here,” Hamm said after receiving a standing ovation from the audience at the 67th Emmys. He thanked his co-stars, the AMC cable network, and others before saying: “Thank you to everyone who watched the show.” Hamm, 44, toiled in near-obscurity for years in bit parts on television shows -- and as a waiter to make ends meet -- before his lucky strike with “Mad Men.” His work on the retro-cool hit show about the bed-hopping lives of a group of 1960s advertising men -- and a few women -- in New York has made him an international sex symbol. With slicked-back dark hair, fitted suits and a deep voice, Hamm created an indelible character -- an anti-hero raised in a brothel who stole a man’s identity during the Korean War, and remade himself as a Madison Avenue big shot. This was his eighth nomination for the role. “Hamm’s interpretation of Don Draper was significant because his own unique look and style made Draper sympathetic and even likable, even though he was a despicable character,” said Deborah Jaramillo, an assistant professor of television studies at Boston University. “Draper was so deeply flawed, but Hamm gave him humanity.” (afp)

Speakers decline, jargon on the rise
THE DESTINY of the Balinese language is at a crossroads. The number of people who can carry on the linguistic heritage of Bali is in decline. Because of the lack of people committed to preserving the inherent wealth of the Balinese language, personalized casual jargon seems to be taking over. The hope of linguistic preservation through education has certain constraints, including teaching materials that overly centered on regional identities though the use of dialectical methods. Concern about the fate of the Balinese
language needs to become the object of our reflections. Measures taken by the Alliance for the Caring for Balinese Language (APBB) specifically by the Head of Bali Education Agency, TIA Kusuma Wardani, indicate that there is something wrong with the methods presently being used to preserve the Balinese language. The APBB strives to ensure that Balinese language, both written and oral are preserved though mandatory curriculum for elementary schools. In response to the issue of linguistic pres-
ervation, Head of the Balinese Language and Literary Studies department at Udayana University, Wayan Swardiana, urges the people of Bali to seriously evaluate policies regarding the teaching of Balinese as well as the general orientation of the inheritance process. According to Swardiana, there is currently a lack of dedication to the teaching of Balinese. Language teaching materials seem to be managed without regards to standards for the teaching of the Balinese language. “I see there is interference by the Balinese language books mafia. Language
books no longer refer to standard Balinese language but instead focus on a dialectical approach,” he criticized. Swardiana says that dialectical language teaching focuses on regional differences. “Teaching materials are not the same all over Bali. They are prepared by teachers in each county/municipality. The bylaw should require the counties / municipalities to coordinate regarding Balinese language inheritance and teaching. “The Education Agency and the Culture Agency also need to synchronize their management of language issues. Both agencies have a space that can be managed effectively for the benefit of Balinese language teaching,” he said. This Udayana professor also wants to remind the governor of Bali of his campaign promise to immediately appoint Balinese language extension officers in each customary village. This is a very important step towards encouraging young people to
pursue an interest in learning Balinese. The younger generation increasingly tends towards the use of Balinese jargon at the expense of the formal use this language. This condition is aggravated by the growing number of song lyrics that do not comply with correct Balinese grammar. “Such depletion of the wealth of Balinese is increasingly common amongst young people,” he said. Chairman of the APBB, I Nyoman Suka Ardiyasa, hopes that the Balinese language will continue to survive. He has asked the Head of the Bali Education Agency, TIA Kusuma Wardani, to immediately create appropriate Balinese language teaching materials. He also emphasized that improvements to Balinese language curricu-
lum needs to be done through a comprehensive assessment involving all relevant parties. Adiyasa is also appealing to the Bali Education Agency to create a rule that would require Balinese language teachers at the elementary school level, to be experts in Balinese, instead of having this subject taught by general teachers of teachers of religion. He also encourages the executive and the legislative branches of Bali’s House of Representatives to enhance Regional Bylaw No.3/1992 on Balinese Language, Literature and Script. This enhancement of the regional bylaw would address Balinese language teaching and the appointment of teachers or educators as forth clearly in the regional bylaw and funded by the provincial government. DENPASAR - The Balinese language is now undergoing degradation. Not only are people speaking it less, but it also being taught less in schools, not to mention the emergence of the widespread use of jargon in Balinese pop songs that often mix in Indonesian and English. This will obviously obscure the standards of the people’s mother tongue. Such opinions we’re stated by member of Commission IV of the Bali House of Representative, Nyoman Parta, in Denpasar recently.
Parta said that the island of Bali, Hinduism, Balinese ethnics, people, language and scripts must be well preserved and maintained in order for Balinese culture to survive and develop. Apart from schools teachings Balinese, one way to maintain the Balinese language is by having it taught in a non-formal setting. This would require their being Balinese language instructors to teach informally in ashrams. “Ashrams are already established and are funded through the regional budget, so all that would be needed, would be to assign instructors (extension officer—Ed),” explained Chairman of the PDI-P Faction in the Bali House of Representative. “As far as I can tell, the government of Bali’s concern remains inadequate. Perhaps they consider Balinese language unimportant, whereas in fact it lies as the very roots of Balinese culture, religion, art and even the island of Bali. In the future, the government should team up with universities in order to conduct studies about the urgency of preserving the Balinese language,” he continued. Parta added that if there is a political will to establish extension officers of Balinese language and Hinduism in each customary village, it could easily be accomplished. This PDI-P politician argues that the substance of local language and literature is rich in cultural treasures that can serve as a way to protect Balinese people from the influence of globalization and contribute to maintaining the continuity of Balinese culture. “The central government needs to pay attention to the appointment of civil servants dedicated to this cause, because local governments do not have the authority to appoint such officer, and can only propose their appointment. Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Bee stings, research that makes you go ‘huh?’ win Ig Nobels
BOSTON — A Cornell University graduate student who allowed honeybees to sting him in 25 places and a group of scientists who concluded it’s possible for one man to father 888 children are among the winners of this year’s Ig Nobels, which honor humorous scientific achievement. Michael Smith estimates he was stung about 200 times during his 2012 honeybee study. His conclusion: The three most painful places to get stung are the nostril, the upper lip and the male sex organ. “A sting to the nostril is so painful it’s like a whole body experience,” he said. Other winners being honored Thursday night at the 25th-annual ceremony at Harvard University include a trio of linguists who discovered that almost every language in the world uses the word “huh” for clarification in a conversation and researchers who found that corporate CEOs take less professional risk if directly affected by a natural disaster as a child. Real Nobel laureates hand out the prizes, and winners receive a cash award: a Zimbabwean 10 trillion dollar bill, the equivalent of a couple of U.S. dollars. Smith shared the Ig Nobel for physiology and entomology with Justin Schmidt, an adjunct professor at the University of Arizona who devised a pain scale for insect stings. His advice: Do not get stung by the tarantula hawk, a nasty looking wasp found in the Southwestern U.S. with a stinger about a quarter-inch long. “The sting is entirely nontoxic but hurts like the bejesus,” Schmidt said. As of last month, Oklahoma has already experienced more than 600 quakes strong enough to rattle windows and rock cars. The biggest was a 4.5-magnitude quake that hit the small town of Crescent. Sandra Voskuhl, 76, grew up in the rural oil boomtown and said she has never felt the earth shake like it did on July 27. First came a thunderous boom. Then the red earth shook hard, Voskuhl said. “You heard it coming,” she said. “Everything shook.” She recalled screaming as framed pictures toppled over in her home.
Then, when things got quiet, she drove over to the town’s Frontier Historical Museum to help clean up antique dishes that had crashed to the ground and shattered. “We need the oil for our workers and our economy,” she said. “But these earthquakes are a little scary.” Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, is the process of shooting water mixed with sand and chemicals deep into the earth to crack rock formations and bring up oil and natural gas trapped inside. The process has unlocked massive amounts of oil and gas in
Oklahoma and other states over the past decade. But along with the oil and gas comes plenty of that brackish water, which is disposed of by injecting it into separate wells that are dug as deep as a mile (less than two kilometers) below ground. The unnatural addition of the water can change pressure along fault lines, causing slips that make the earth shake, said Choy of the US Geological Survey. There is debate among scientists over how large of a fault could be reawakened, and how hard that fault might shake. One camp believes Oklahoma
won’t see bigger than a 4.0 to 5.0-magnitude earthquake, which would be enough to break windows and knock things off shelves. Others believe a 7.0-magnitude earthquake could come about, which would be strong enough to topple buildings. “What’s at risk is that when you put water into the ground, it’s never going to come back out. You’re putting it in places it has never been before,” Choy told AFP. “The bigger the volume, the greater the area will be affected. And we don’t know what the longterm effect will be.” (afp)

There are two waterfalls located in Kawan hamlet known as the two-tiered Pengibul and Tibumana waterfall. The first tier reaches a height of 5 meters and the second one reaches 15 meters. The waterfall located in the south named Tibumana has twin streams and the height reaches 25 meters. To get to this location, visitors can go through Beng village (Gianyar) located only three kilometers from Bangun Lemah hamlet; from there it is a ten minute drive to the waterfalls. . Or if you go through the town of Bangli, you can pass through Demulih village. The waterfalls are the accessed after walking down 50 meters of stairs. On the way, your ears will be pampered by the pounding sound of the waterfalls combined with the with a gentle mountain breeze.
The cool atmosphere here will prevent you from getting bored. Chief of Bangun Lemah Kawan customary village, I Wayan Miarta, said on Saturday (Sep. 19) that after pictures of the waterfalls were posted on social media sites, the waterfall began to be flocked to by travelers from Bangli, Denpasar and even further afield. Currently, 200 people a day visit the waterfalls, most of whom are young people. This number increases during public holidays. Aside from enjoying the cool water, travelers also take pictures to immortalize their visit. “Visitors are predominantly young men,” said Miarta. Miarta explained that the site has being managed in cooperation with the local customary youth club for the last three months. Visitors are only charged IDR 5,000 per person as a donation. So far this has been enough to cover the costs of the operating and maintaining the site. Miarta added that in the south there is Tibumana waterfall and a holy spring. A crystal clear trickle of water spouts from the black
rocks. The slow running water makes for a perfect backdrop for pictures. “Apart from the waterfall, there is also a holy spring,” he explained. Chief of the local customary youth club, I Wayan Yoga Yasa, said that the management of the waterfalls seeks to introduce the village to the outside world and that all the promotion so far has been done through social media. Since the waterfall was opened, the number of visits is quite impressive, especially on public holidays. He added that road condition are not very good and that sanitary facilities have yet to be made available. On that account, he hoped that local government can contribute to the development of this tourist attraction. Moreover, visitors are not only from Bangli, but also from other regions such as Denpasar, Badung and Gianyar. “We have already taken the initiative of promoting and managing this attraction. Masceti Beach thronged by visitors GIANYAR - Diverse forms of traditional and “creation” kites decorated the skies of Masceti Beach for two days during the Gianyar Kite Festival 2015. The festival that was organized in part by children, drew the attention of many people.
As seen on the last day or Sunday (Sep. 20), children of elementary and junior high school age started competiting at 9 o’clock in the morning in the “creation” kite making competention. Some participants also made bebean (fish), bird, box and puppet character style kites that were then flown into the sky. This site obviously attracted visitors. From morning, both children and adults thronged the coastal area of Medahan village, Blahbatuh. “Traditional kite flying competions, involving elementary and junior high school students has increasingly strengthened the position of Gianyar as a Children-Eligible County. Such competitions should be maintained and held every year with different themes so as to explore children’s creativity and serve as a way to preserve local culture,” said Regional Secretary of Gianyar, I.B. Gaga Adi Saputra, accompanied by the Head of the Gianyar Women Empowerment and Family Planning I.A. The Gianyar Kite Festival 2015 was officially opened on Saturday (Sep. 19) by First Assistant to the Regional Secretariat of Gianyar, Cokorda Rai Widiarsa Pemayun. Chairman of the festival, Komang Elen Juniadi, said that the festival participants this year reached 735 people from various regions in Bali. The kite contested is divided into three categories namely category A including bebean (fish style) and pecukan style kites with a width of 2.5 meters. Category B included the bebean, pecukan, janggan and creation style with a maximum width of four meters. Category C involved primary and secondary school students that made a free creation kite and then flew them. According to Juniadi, assessment for the competition is not only based on the beauty of the kites as they fly and land, but also on the orderliness of participants on the road when coming in and coming out of the competition venue. Rock throwing is becoming commonplace in Jerusalem amid a wave of Palestinian unrest, leading to calls for a harsh crackdown and adding to tensions over access to a key holy site. But the outbursts appear to be decentralized and unorganized, and any tough new measures risk setting off another full-fledged conflict. The Palestinian rock thrower emerged as an iconic image of the first uprising against Israeli occupation in the 1980s and even as the second uprising last decade took on a more militant nature with suicide bombings and shooting attacks, rock throwing has been a regular feature of demonstrations since then. Joel Reyes of western Palawan island province and his brother Mario Reyes, an ex-municipal mayor, were arrested Sunday by Thai police on the southern island of Phuket, said Philippine Justice Secretary Leila de Lima. She said immigration authorities were processing the brothers’ deportation
papers. The Philippine government has offered a 2 million peso ($43,000) reward each for information leading to the arrest of the brothers, who fled the Philippines after being implicated in the murder of Gerardo Ortega. Ortega’s family and colleagues say Ortega was silenced for opposing mining on Palawan, which is famous for its pristine beaches and virgin forests. He was fatally shot in 2011 by a selfconfessed hit man who implicated the Reyes
brothers and a former provincial administrator. “The arrest of the long-wanted Reyes brothers provides an opportunity for pursuing the ends of justice,” presidential spokesman Herminio Coloma said. “We acknowledge the efforts of Interpol and Thai authorities in making this possible.” Mika Ortega, the slain environmentalist’s daughter, also welcomed the arrests. The strikes affecting those departing and arriving on international flights are set to continue until September 30. “Border Force workers feel they have no choice but to act, so they are prepared to strike every day, twice a day over peak periods, over 10 days,” Flood said. The union claims the government wants to reduce rights, conditions and allowances, cutting current annual pay for many staff by Aus$8,000 (US$5,735) and have called on new Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to resolve the 18-month dispute. The Australian Border Force said passengers travelling in and out of the country over the coming week may experience delays at international airports due to the industrial action. “Arrangements are in place to protect Australia’s borders and minimise the impact on our operations, but if you are going overseas, we advise you to arrive at the airport early,” it said in a statement. Managers stepped in during the strike at Sydney Airport on Monday, but there were still delays. “We’ve been about an hour and a half to get through; it’s a bit chaotic in there to say the least,” one traveller told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. He added that the price hike is probably due to the increasing difficulty in finding the raw stones. The cost of transportation has also gone up and orders must be placed way ahead of time. “I obtained this stone from Karangasem. Now, it is more difficult to obtain it,” he said. In order not to lose money, said Sumada, he is forced to increase the price of his shrine products. Previously, dugul shrines used to be sold for IDR 6.5 million but now it has increased to IDR 8 million. The price hike of this product is certainly not comparable to the price hike of the raw materials. “The increased price is necessary to avoid severe losses. I do not dare to raise my prices too much for fear of not selling my products,” he said. During peak season, Sumada can sell two shrines each week. BANGLI - In order to accelerate the fire extinguishing process for future fires, the Bangli Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) will increase the water supply to areas near the conservation forest, such as Suter village. This effort was announced by the Head of the BPBD Bangli, I Wayan Karmawan, on Sunday (Sep. 20). Karmawan explained there is still potential for fires to start in the conservation forest due to the dry condition of the forest that has been increasing over the last free months. After the fire incident that occurred a few days ago, in which manual tools were used to put out the fire, and water supplies were low, they have decided to increase the supply of water available for fire fighting. He added that water supplies will be placed in reservoirs around Munggu Temple, Suter village because this area is prone to fires. Before fire incident, the water supply was more focused to meet the consumption of residents. “The three-tanks of water have been taken to the location,in anticipation of future fires,” he said. For other villages like Buahan and Abang Songan there is no plan as of yet to supply them with additional water. The water supply here continues to run as usual. In case of fire, the fire trucks and tank trucks are ready to come down to location. The uptake point of the water has also been determined as the reservoir of the BKSDA. “The water in this reservoir will also be used in the case
of a fire incident,” he said. “We also continue to coordinate with village authorities and the BPBD in sharing information with each other,” he added. Karmawan hopes that there will be additional water supplied in accordance with promises made to the headman of Abang Songan, I Wayan Widiana. When a fire occurs, people do not know where to look for water, so water that is meant to be used for human consumption ends up being used to put out the fire. “If possible, a supply of water needs to be added to the region in anticipation of subsequent fires,” he said. Section Chief of Conservation for Region II at the BKSDA Bali, Ketut Catur Marbawa, briefly explained that the Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) Bali announced that based on mapping of the area, the forest area in the lower part of Mount Batur is most prone to wild fires. This dry forest, overgrown with grass is easily set ablaze. “Forest conditions in the lower part of Mount Batur are dry making it prone to forest fire,” he explained. To avoid any subsequent fire, said Marbawa, his institution has been monitoring the forest and has prepared water reservoirs. “At least there are ten reservoirs in the forest area of Kintamani. Eight reservoirs occur at the upper and two others at the lower part of forest area. We will continuously monitor the availability of water,” he said. (kmb45)

2 charged in Boston’s ‘Baby Doe’ case due in court Monday BOSTON — Part of the three-month mystery of “Baby Doe” has been solved but authorities are expected to fill in details when two people charged in the 2-year-old girl’s death appear in court. Millions viewed a composite image of a brown-eyed, chubby-cheeked girl, dubbed Baby Doe when her body was found June 25 in a trash bag washed up on a beach in the Boston-area in the U.S. On Friday, authorities released her name — Bella Bond — and announced charges against her mother and the mother’s boyfriend, saying they finally had a tip that broke open the case. Michael McCarthy, 35, is charged with
murder. Bella’s mother, Rachelle Bond, 40, is charged as an accessory after the fact. They are to be arraigned Monday in Dorchester District Court in Boston. Investigators have not publicly speculated on a motive or a cause of death in Bella’s case, saying more will be disclosed at the arraignments. McCarthy’s attorney, Jonathan Shapiro, declined to comment Sunday on the case except to say that he expects McCarthy, who has been hospitalized, to be in court Monday. Repeated attempts to reach relatives of McCarthy have been unsuccessful. Bond’s attorney, Janice Bassil, did not return a message Sunday seeking comment.
Bella’s biological father, Joseph Amoroso, said in media interviews that Rachelle Bond told him McCarthy killed their child. He also told The Boston Globe and the Boston Herald that Bond told him McCarthy believed the child was possessed by demons, and that Bella had been dead several weeks before her body was found. Amoroso said he has been in Florida for a couple of years and returned to Massachusetts in August hoping to reconnect with his daughter, whom he never met. He said Bond told him last week what happened to their child, and stayed with him in Lynn on Thursday night. He said he was questioned Friday. Amoroso has not been charged. (ap)

INDONESIA Rizal Ramli meets three ministers to discuss salt cartel
JAKARTA - Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Rizal Ramli held a meeting with three ministers to discuss the alleged presence of a salt cartel in the country. “Seven groups, which control the salt business, are allegedly part of a salt cartel. This cartel is very dangerous,” Ramli stated on Monday. The statement was delivered by Ramli after holding a coordination meeting with Trade Minister Thomas Lembong, Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Susi Pudjiastuti, and Industry Minister Saleh Husin. The alleged cartel, involving seven traders, is responsible for the increase in salt imports and hike in its prices. When the domestic farmers failed produce, the price of salt would be increased by the salt traders. “The cartel has destroyed the salt industry and has affected the farmers,” he pointed out. Therefore, Rizal emphasized that the government continued to monitor the salt trade through a quota system. “The quota system, which is used in the salt trade, has increased the number of imports. It is necessary to review the system,” he affirmed. Earlier, General Chairman of the Indonesian Traditional Fishermen Association (KNTI) Riza Damanik had stated that the alleged presence of a cartel in the salt business was the main factor that had hindered the efforts to achieve sovereignty in the salt production sector. He remarked that the cartel was strong as it was concealing itself by taking advantage of the unharmonious relations between the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries and the Ministry of Industry. The salt issue is also believed to be linked to the storage time at Indonesian ports, thereby causing delays and impacts, which had disadvantaged and reduced the competitiveness of the nation. Several figures of inter-related ministries are believed to be involved. Meanwhile, Pudjiastuti expressed hope that the investigation on the storage time conducted by the Jakarta police would also focus on the import of salt. “I hope the police would also conduct an investigation on the import of salt in the country,” the minister affirmed. President launched MRT drilling project
JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) launched the operations of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) for the Mass Rapid Transport (MRT) project in South Jakarta on Monday. The first TBM called “Anteraja” will commence operations in the Senayan Statue area to dig a tunnel towards Setiabudi point. The Anteraja is one of the four TBMs that will be operated in the MRT project in Jakarta.
Using the “Earth Pressure Balance (EPB)” technology, the TBM in Indonesia has been made by a Japanese company, Japan Tunnel Systems Corporation. Weighing 323 tons, the TBM has a diameter of around 6.7 meters and a length of
43 meters. The Anteraja TBM is able to drill a tunnel at a speed of eight meters per day, and the construction of the tunnel is expected to run from September 2015 to December 2016. (ant)
Governor expresses dissapointment over uncoordinated visit to Freeport TIMIKA - Papua Governor Lukas Enembe expressed disappointment over the visit of three cabinet ministers to Freeport’s mining site in Mimika district without prior coordination with the local government, according to Mimika District Head Eltinus Omaleng. “The governor was very disappointed, and I am, too, because the three ministers came on a working visit to Freeport without coordinating with the local government. Is this practice in accordance with
the ministerial protocol?” Omaleng questioned. Omaleng claimed that he was in Manado, North Sulawesi, to attend a working meeting when the three ministers visited the Freeport area in Mimika district on Saturday. Energy Minister Sudirman remarked that their visit was to obtain first-hand information about the activities of PT Freeport Indonesia in addition to discussing the possibility of using domestic products. tion. He added that the visit was also intended to evaluate the activities of the company in managing the natural resources in Papua. Starting from pole position, Vettel led all the way to take the chequered flag for the fourth time at the floodlit Marina Bay Street Circuit, despite twice losing the big advantage he had built up when the safety car was deployed. “It must be one of my best races. It was pretty intense,” Vettel said. “If we have more weekends like this, yes we can catch Mercedes. “Maybe we can make the impossible possible - we will definitely go for it.” Australia’s Daniel Ricciardo finished second for Red Bull, his best result of a frustrating year, while Vettel’s team mate Kimi Raikkonen crossed the line third. Hamilton was running fourth approaching the halfway point of the 61-lap race when he lost engine power, rapidly dropping back through the field before he was told to return to the garage and call it a night. “I was feeling superoptimistic in the car, I really was,” Hamilton said. “I was just waiting for that time when I could push and see what I could get from the car but obviously I didn’t get that.” Nico Rosberg finished fourth for Mercedes to cut Hamilton’s championship lead to 41 points. A proven master on the slow and twisty Singapore track, Vettel gave his rivals no chance when he planted his foot on the accelerator and made a flying getaway from the front of the grid. The 28-year-old opened up a commanding threesecond lead over Ricciardo on the opening lap and was never seriously challenged even when the safety car was introduced. Its first appearance came on the 13th lap when Felipe Massa exited the pits and was hit from the side by Nico Hulkenberg who slammed into a wall, wrecking his Force India car and ending his race. Vettel described the intruder as “crazy” while Ricciardo, who was starting to inch closer to the front, said the introduction of the safety car cost him any chance of winning. “Thanks to the guy on the track... appreciate it!” Vettel joked. “I was tempted to swerve - clip him!” Hamilton, who needs one more win to draw level with his childhood hero Senna, endured his worst weekend of the season. Valtteri Bottas finished fifth, Daniil Kvyat sixth, Sergio Perez seventh and Dutch teenager Max Verstappen was eighth after an eventful day. Saint-Etienne climbs to 3rd place with win against Nantes PARIS — Goals from Jonathan Bamba and Robert Beric lifted SaintEtienne to a 2-0 win over Nantes in the French league Sunday, a fourth consecutive victory that lifted the club one point behind leader Paris Saint-Germain. Unbeaten in the league since August, Saint-Etienne moved level on points with secondplace Rennes but has a worse goal difference and sits in third place in the standings. In a match pitting together two clubs having won 18 French league titles between them, Saint-Etienne enjoyed most of the possession but had just three shots on target and converted two.

Martial continued to repay the hefty fee Manchester United paid Monaco for him by scoring twice to spearhead a 3-2 win over Southampton in the Premier League on Sunday. Saint-Etienne climbs to 3rd place with win against Nantes PARIS — Goals from Jonathan Bamba and Robert Beric lifted SaintEtienne to a 2-0 win over Nantes in the French league Sunday, a fourth consecutive victory that lifted the club one point behind leader Paris Saint-Germain. Unbeaten in the league since August, Saint-Etienne moved level on points with secondplace Rennes but has a worse goal difference and sits in third place in the standings. Starting from pole position, Vettel led all the way to take the chequered flag for the fourth time at the floodlit Marina Bay Street Circuit, despite twice losing the big advantage he had built up when the safety car was deployed. “It must be one of my best races. It was pretty intense,” Vettel said. “If we have more weekends like this, yes we can catch Mercedes. “Maybe we can make the impossible possible - we will definitely go for it.” Australia’s Daniel Ricciardo finished second for Red Bull, his best result of a frustrating year, while Vettel’s team mate Kimi Raikkonen crossed the line third. Hamilton was running fourth approaching the halfway point of the 61-lap race when he lost engine power, rapidly dropping back through the field before he was told to return to the garage and call it a night. “I was feeling superoptimistic in the car, I really was,” Hamilton said. “I was just waiting for that time when I could push and see what I could get from the car but obviously I didn’t get that.” Nico Rosberg finished fourth for Mercedes to cut Hamilton’s championship lead to 41 points. Vettel described the intruder as “crazy” while Ricciardo, who was starting to inch closer to the front, said the introduction of the safety car cost him any chance of winning. “Thanks to the guy on the track... appreciate it!” Vettel joked. “I was tempted to swerve - clip him!” Hamilton, who needs one more win to draw level with his childhood hero Senna, endured his worst weekend of the season. Valtteri Bottas finished fifth, Daniil Kvyat sixth, Sergio Perez seventh and Dutch teenager Max Verstappen was eighth after an eventful day. Pope meets with Fidel, misses out on dissident greeting
HAVANA — Pope Francis flies to eastern Cuba on Monday for the next leg of his pilgrimage after having met with both Raul and Fidel Castro but missing out on an encounter with Cuban dissidents. The Vatican stressed that no official meeting had been planned with the dissidents. The Vatican embassy in Havana did make calls to some leaders “as a sign of attention to these people,” the Vatican spokesman said, but in the end the dissidents were prevented from reaching the cathedral where the greeting was planned. The Castro meetings went off without a hitch. The Vatican described the 40minute session with Fidel Castro at the former president’s home as “informal and familial,” with an exchange of books and discussion about big issues facing humanity, including Francis’ recent encyclical on the environment and the global economic system. Millions viewed a composite image of a brown-eyed, chubby-cheeked girl, dubbed Baby Doe when her body was found June 25 in a trash bag washed up on a beach in the Boston-area in the U.S. On Friday, authorities released her name — Bella Bond — and announced charges against her mother and the mother’s boyfriend, saying they finally had a tip that broke open the case. Michael McCarthy, 35, is charged with
murder. Bella’s mother, Rachelle Bond, 40, is charged as an accessory after the fact. They are to be arraigned Monday in Dorchester District Court in Boston. Investigators have not publicly speculated on a motive or a cause of death in Bella’s case, saying more will be disclosed at the arraignments. McCarthy’s attorney, Jonathan Shapiro, declined to comment Sunday on the case except to say that he expects McCarthy, who has been hospitalized, to be in court Monday. Repeated attempts to reach relatives of McCarthy have been unsuccessful. Bond’s attorney, Janice Bassil, did not return a message Sunday seeking comment.

INDONESIA Rizal Ramli meets three ministers to discuss salt cartel
JAKARTA - Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Rizal Ramli held a meeting with three ministers to discuss the alleged presence of a salt cartel in the country. “Seven groups, which control the salt business, are allegedly part of a salt cartel. This cartel is very dangerous,” Ramli stated on Monday. The statement was delivered by Ramli after holding a coordination meeting with Trade Minister Thomas Lembong, Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Susi Pudjiastuti, and Industry Minister Saleh Husin. The alleged cartel, involving seven traders, is responsible for the increase in salt imports and hike in its prices. When the domestic farmers failed produce, the price of salt would be increased by the salt traders. “The cartel has destroyed the salt industry and has affected the farmers,” he pointed out. Therefore, Rizal emphasized that the government continued to monitor the salt trade through a quota system. “The quota system, which is used in the salt trade, has increased the number of imports. It is necessary to review the system,” he affirmed. Earlier, General Chairman of the Indonesian Traditional Fishermen Association (KNTI) Riza Damanik had stated that the alleged presence of a cartel in the salt business was the main factor that had hindered the efforts to achieve sovereignty in the salt production sector. He remarked that the cartel was strong as it was concealing itself by taking advantage of the unharmonious relations between the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries and the Ministry of Industry. The salt issue is also believed to be linked to the storage time at Indonesian ports, thereby causing delays and impacts, which had disadvantaged and reduced the competitiveness of the nation. Several figures of inter-related ministries are believed to be involved. Meanwhile, Pudjiastuti expressed hope that the investigation on the storage time conducted by the Jakarta police would also focus on the import of salt. “I hope the police would also conduct an investigation on the import of salt in the country,” the minister affirmed. JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) launched the operations of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) for the Mass Rapid Transport (MRT) project in South Jakarta on Monday. The first TBM called “Anteraja” will commence operations in the Senayan Statue area to dig a tunnel towards Setiabudi point. The Anteraja is one of the four TBMs that will be operated in the MRT project in Jakarta.
Using the “Earth Pressure Balance (EPB)” technology, the TBM in Indonesia has been made by a Japanese company, Japan Tunnel Systems Corporation. Weighing 323 tons, the TBM has a diameter of around 6.7 meters and a length of
43 meters. The Anteraja TBM is able to drill a tunnel at a speed of eight meters per day, and the construction of the tunnel is expected to run from September 2015 to December 2016. (ant)

The union claims the government wants to reduce rights, conditions and allowances, cutting current annual pay for many staff by Aus$8,000 (US$5,735) and have called on new Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to resolve the 18-month dispute. The Australian Border Force said passengers travelling in and out of the country over the coming week may experience delays at international airports due to the industrial action. “Arrangements are in place to protect Australia’s borders and minimise the impact on our operations, but if you are going overseas, we advise you to arrive at the airport early,” it said in a statement. Managers stepped in during the strike at Sydney Airport on Monday, but there were still delays. “We’ve been about an hour and a half to get through; it’s a bit chaotic in there to say the least,” one traveller told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. He added that the price hike is probably due to the increasing difficulty in finding the raw stones. The cost of transportation has also gone up and orders must be placed way ahead of time. “I obtained this stone from Karangasem. Now, it is more difficult to obtain it,” he said. In order not to lose money, said Sumada, he is forced to increase the price of his shrine products. Previously, dugul shrines used to be sold for IDR 6.5 million but now it has increased to IDR 8 million. The price hike of this product is certainly not comparable to the price hike of the raw materials. “The increased price is necessary to avoid severe losses. I do not dare to raise my prices too much for fear of not selling my products,” he said. During peak season, Sumada can sell two shrines each week. BANGLI - In order to accelerate the fire extinguishing process for future fires, the Bangli Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) will increase the water supply to areas near the conservation forest, such as Suter village. This effort was announced by the Head of the BPBD Bangli, I Wayan Karmawan, on Sunday (Sep. 20). Karmawan explained there is still potential for fires to start in the conservation forest due to the dry condition of the forest that has been increasing over the last free months. After the fire incident that occurred a few days ago, in which manual tools were used to put out the fire, and water supplies were low, they have decided to increase the supply of water available for fire fighting. He added that water supplies will be placed in reservoirs around Munggu Temple, Suter village because this area is prone to fires. Before fire incident, the water supply was more focused to meet the consumption of residents. “The three-tanks of water have been taken to the location,in anticipation of future fires,” he said. For other villages like Buahan and Abang Songan there is no plan as of yet to supply them with additional water. The water supply here continues to run as usual. In case of fire, the fire trucks and tank trucks are ready to come down to location. The uptake point of the water has also been determined as the reservoir of the BKSDA. “The water in this reservoir will also be used in the case
of a fire incident,” he said. “We also continue to coordinate with village authorities and the BPBD in sharing information with each other,” he added. Karmawan hopes that there will be additional water supplied in accordance with promises made to the headman of Abang Songan, I Wayan Widiana. When a fire occurs, people do not know where to look for water, so water that is meant to be used for human consumption ends up being used to put out the fire. “If possible, a supply of water needs to be added to the region in anticipation of subsequent fires,” he said. Section Chief of Conservation for Region II at the BKSDA Bali, Ketut Catur Marbawa, briefly explained that the Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) Bali announced that based on mapping of the area, the forest area in the lower part of Mount Batur is most prone to wild fires. This dry forest, overgrown with grass is easily set ablaze. “Forest conditions in the lower part of Mount Batur are dry making it prone to forest fire,” he explained. To avoid any subsequent fire, said Marbawa, his institution has been monitoring the forest and has prepared water reservoirs. “At least there are ten reservoirs in the forest area of Kintamani. Masceti Beach thronged by visitors GIANYAR - Diverse forms of traditional and “creation” kites decorated the skies of Masceti Beach for two days during the Gianyar Kite Festival 2015. The festival that was organized in part by children, drew the attention of many people.
As seen on the last day or Sunday (Sep. 20), children of elementary and junior high school age started competiting at 9 o’clock in the morning in the “creation” kite making competention. Some participants also made bebean (fish), bird, box and puppet character style kites that were then flown into the sky. This site obviously attracted visitors. From morning, both children and adults thronged the coastal area of Medahan village, Blahbatuh. “Traditional kite flying competions, involving elementary and junior high school students has increasingly strengthened the position of Gianyar as a Children-Eligible County. Such competitions should be maintained and held every year with different themes so as to explore children’s creativity and serve as a way to preserve local culture,” said Regional Secretary of Gianyar, I.B. Gaga Adi Saputra, accompanied by the Head of the Gianyar Women Empowerment and Family Planning I.A. Putu Sri Ambari and the Head of Gianyar Education Agency Dewa Gde Alit Mudiarta as they enjoyed the festival. The Gianyar Kite Festival 2015 was officially opened on Saturday (Sep. 19) by First Assistant to the Regional Secretariat of Gianyar, Cokorda Rai Widiarsa Pemayun. Chairman of the festival, Komang Elen Juniadi, said that the festival participants this year reached 735 people from various regions in Bali. The kite contested is divided into three categories namely category A including bebean (fish style) and pecukan style kites with a width of 2.5 meters. Category B included the bebean, pecukan, janggan and creation style with a maximum width of four meters. Category C involved primary and secondary school students that made a free creation kite and then flew them. According to Juniadi, assessment for the competition is not only based on the beauty of the kites as they fly and land, but also on the orderliness of participants on the road when coming in and coming out of the competition venue. Rock throwing is becoming commonplace in Jerusalem amid a wave of Palestinian unrest, leading to calls for a harsh crackdown and adding to tensions over access to a key holy site. But the outbursts appear to be decentralized and unorganized, and any tough new measures risk setting off another full-fledged conflict. MANILA, Philippines — The former governor of a Philippine province and his brother who are wanted for the 2011 murder of a radio anchor and prominent environmentalist have been arrested in Thailand, officials said Monday. Former Gov. Joel Reyes of western Palawan island province and his brother Mario Reyes, an ex-municipal mayor, were arrested Sunday by Thai police on the southern island of Phuket, said Philippine Justice Secretary Leila de Lima. She said immigration authorities were processing the brothers’ deportation
papers. The Philippine government has offered a 2 million peso ($43,000) reward each for information leading to the arrest of the brothers, who fled the Philippines after being implicated in the murder of Gerardo Ortega. Ortega’s family and colleagues say Ortega was silenced for opposing mining on Palawan, which is famous for its pristine beaches and virgin forests. He was fatally shot in 2011 by a selfconfessed hit man who implicated the Reyes
brothers and a former provincial administrator. “The arrest of the long-wanted Reyes brothers provides an opportunity for pursuing the ends of justice,” presidential spokesman Herminio Coloma said. “We acknowledge the efforts of Interpol and Thai authorities in making this possible.” Mika Ortega, the slain environmentalist’s daughter, also welcomed the arrests. Bee stings, research that makes you go ‘huh?’ win Ig Nobels
BOSTON — A Cornell University graduate student who allowed honeybees to sting him in 25 places and a group of scientists who concluded it’s possible for one man to father 888 children are among the winners of this year’s Ig Nobels, which honor humorous scientific achievement. Michael Smith estimates he was stung about 200 times during his 2012 honeybee study. His conclusion: The three most painful places to get stung are the nostril, the upper lip and the male sex organ. “A sting to the nostril is so painful it’s like a whole body experience,” he said. Other winners being honored Thursday night at the 25th-annual ceremony at Harvard University include a trio of linguists who discovered that almost every language in the world uses the word “huh” for clarification in a conversation and researchers who found that corporate CEOs take less professional risk if directly affected by a natural disaster as a child. Real Nobel laureates hand out the prizes, and winners receive a cash award: a Zimbabwean 10 trillion dollar bill, the equivalent of a couple of U.S. dollars. Smith shared the Ig Nobel for physiology and entomology with Justin Schmidt, an adjunct professor at the University of Arizona who devised a pain scale for insect stings. As of last month, Oklahoma has already experienced more than 600 quakes strong enough to rattle windows and rock cars. The biggest was a 4.5-magnitude quake that hit the small town of Crescent. Sandra Voskuhl, 76, grew up in the rural oil boomtown and said she has never felt the earth shake like it did on July 27. First came a thunderous boom. Then the red earth shook hard, Voskuhl said. “You heard it coming,” she said. “Everything shook.” She recalled screaming as framed pictures toppled over in her home.
Then, when things got quiet, she drove over to the town’s Frontier Historical Museum to help clean up antique dishes that had crashed to the ground and shattered. “We need the oil for our workers and our economy,” she said. “But these earthquakes are a little scary.” Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, is the process of shooting water mixed with sand and chemicals deep into the earth to crack rock formations and bring up oil and natural gas trapped inside. The process has unlocked massive amounts of oil and gas in
Oklahoma and other states over the past decade. But along with the oil and gas comes plenty of that brackish water, which is disposed of by injecting it into separate wells that are dug as deep as a mile (less than two kilometers) below ground. The unnatural addition of the water can change pressure along fault lines, causing slips that make the earth shake, said Choy of the US Geological Survey. There is debate among scientists over how large of a fault could be reawakened, and how hard that fault might shake. One camp believes Oklahoma
won’t see bigger than a 4.0 to 5.0-magnitude earthquake, which would be enough to break windows and knock things off shelves. Others believe a 7.0-magnitude earthquake could come about, which would be strong enough to topple buildings. “What’s at risk is that when you put water into the ground, it’s never going to come back out. You’re putting it in places it has never been before,” Choy told AFP. “The bigger the volume, the greater the area will be affected. And we don’t know what the longterm effect will be.” (afp)

Gelar overrun with plastic waste
NEGARA - The recreational and historical site of Gelar, Palungan Batu, Batuagung village, is contaminated by plastic waste. Many visitors to this site, apparently to do not pay attention to sanitation and simply litter into the river.
As a result, the river -known to be pristine, has become polluted with waste. As seen on Sunday (Sep. 20), a number of visitors were seen bringing food and drinks, but they carelessly discarded their wrappers. One visitor was even injured as her leg was cut by garbage in the river. Along the river banks much plastic waste was also encountered, including food and drink packages, scattered amongst the boulders. “In the past, the river was very clean, but now it has become littered with garbage,” said Ketut Astika, a local visitor. This commuting worker often takes time to come to Gelar just to bathe. During the dry season like this, when water recedes, plastic waste that had settled on the edge of the river, becomes visible. The local government has made efforts to take care of this region, including repairs made to the monument to struggle that stands by the riverside, as well as setting up garbage bins along

There are two waterfalls located in Kawan hamlet known as the two-tiered Pengibul and Tibumana waterfall. The first tier reaches a height of 5 meters and the second one reaches 15 meters. The waterfall located in the south named Tibumana has twin streams and the height reaches 25 meters. To get to this location, visitors can go through Beng village (Gianyar) located only three kilometers from Bangun Lemah hamlet; from there it is a ten minute drive to the waterfalls. . Or if you go through the town of Bangli, you can pass through Demulih village. The waterfalls are the accessed after walking down 50 meters of stairs. On the way, your ears will be pampered by the pounding sound of the waterfalls combined with the with a gentle mountain breeze.
The cool atmosphere here will prevent you from getting bored. Chief of Bangun Lemah Kawan customary village, I Wayan Miarta, said on Saturday (Sep. 19) that after pictures of the waterfalls were posted on social media sites, the waterfall began to be flocked to by travelers from Bangli, Denpasar and even further afield. Currently, 200 people a day visit the waterfalls, most of whom are young people. This number increases during public holidays. Aside from enjoying the cool water, travelers also take pictures to immortalize their visit. “Visitors are predominantly young men,” said Miarta. Miarta explained that the site has being managed in cooperation with the local customary youth club for the last three months. Visitors are only charged IDR 5,000 per person as a donation. So far this has been enough to cover the costs of the operating and maintaining the site. Miarta added that in the south there is Tibumana waterfall and a holy spring. A crystal clear trickle of water spouts from the black
rocks. The slow running water makes for a perfect backdrop for pictures. “Apart from the waterfall, there is also a holy spring,” he explained. Chief of the local customary youth club, I Wayan Yoga Yasa, said that the management of the waterfalls seeks to introduce the village to the outside world and that all the promotion so far has been done through social media. Since the waterfall was opened, the number of visits is quite impressive, especially on public holidays. He added that road condition are not very good and that sanitary facilities have yet to be made available. On that account, he hoped that local government can contribute to the development of this tourist attraction. Moreover, visitors are not only from Bangli, but also from other regions such as Denpasar, Badung and Gianyar. “We have already taken the initiative of promoting and managing this attraction. The bylaw should require the counties / municipalities to coordinate regarding Balinese language inheritance and teaching. “The Education Agency and the Culture Agency also need to synchronize their management of language issues. Both agencies have a space that can be managed effectively for the benefit of Balinese language teaching,” he said. This Udayana professor also wants to remind the governor of Bali of his campaign promise to immediately appoint Balinese language extension officers in each customary village. This is a very important step towards encouraging young people to
pursue an interest in learning Balinese. The younger generation increasingly tends towards the use of Balinese jargon at the expense of the formal use this language. This condition is aggravated by the growing number of song lyrics that do not comply with correct Balinese grammar. “Such depletion of the wealth of Balinese is increasingly common amongst young people,” he said. Chairman of the APBB, I Nyoman Suka Ardiyasa, hopes that the Balinese language will continue to survive. He has asked the Head of the Bali Education Agency, TIA Kusuma Wardani, to immediately create appropriate Balinese language teaching materials. He also emphasized that improvements to Balinese language curricu-
lum needs to be done through a comprehensive assessment involving all relevant parties. Adiyasa is also appealing to the Bali Education Agency to create a rule that would require Balinese language teachers at the elementary school level, to be experts in Balinese, instead of having this subject taught by general teachers of teachers of religion. He also encourages the executive and the legislative branches of Bali’s House of Representatives to enhance Regional Bylaw No.3/1992 on Balinese Language, Literature and Script. This enhancement of the regional bylaw would address Balinese language teaching and the appointment of teachers or educators as forth clearly in the regional bylaw and funded by the provincial government. DENPASAR - The Balinese language is now undergoing degradation. Not only are people speaking it less, but it also being taught less in schools, not to mention the emergence of the widespread use of jargon in Balinese pop songs that often mix in Indonesian and English. This will obviously obscure the standards of the people’s mother tongue. Such opinions we’re stated by member of Commission IV of the Bali House of Representative, Nyoman Parta, in Denpasar recently.
Parta said that the island of Bali, Hinduism, Balinese ethnics, people, language and scripts must be well preserved and maintained in order for Balinese culture to survive and develop. Apart from schools teachings Balinese, one way to maintain the Balinese language is by having it taught in a non-formal setting. This would require their being Balinese language instructors to teach informally in ashrams. “Ashrams are already established and are funded through the regional budget, so all that would be needed, would be to assign instructors (extension officer—Ed),” explained Chairman of the PDI-P Faction in the Bali House of Representative. “As far as I can tell, the government of Bali’s concern remains inadequate. Perhaps they consider Balinese language unimportant, whereas in fact it lies as the very roots of Balinese culture, religion, art and even the island of Bali. In the future, the government should team up with universities in order to conduct studies about the urgency of preserving the Balinese language,” he continued. Parta added that if there is a political will to establish extension officers of Balinese language and Hinduism in each customary village, it could easily be accomplished. Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Universal’s 3-D mountaineering thriller “Everest,” starring Josh Brolin and Jason Clarke, opened with $7.6 million, playing only on 545 IMAX and large-format screens. It expands wide next weekend.

NEW YORK — “The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials” edged out Johnny Depp’s “Black Mass” at box office, as the two films split young and old moviegoers in half on the first weekend of the fall movie season. 20th Century Fox’s sequel to “The Maze Runner” earned an estimated $30.3 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. While that came in slightly below the debut of the 2014 young-adult dystopian sci-fi original, it counted as a win for a movie that cost $61 million to make. Warner Bros.’ “Black Mass,” starring Johnny Depp as Boston gangster Whitey Bulger, premiered with $23.4 million. Speakers decline, jargon on the rise
THE DESTINY of the Balinese language is at a crossroads. The number of people who can carry on the linguistic heritage of Bali is in decline. Because of the lack of people committed to preserving the inherent wealth of the Balinese language, personalized casual jargon seems to be taking over. The hope of linguistic preservation through education has certain constraints, including teaching materials that overly centered on regional identities though the use of dialectical methods. Concern about the fate of the Balinese
language needs to become the object of our reflections. Measures taken by the Alliance for the Caring for Balinese Language (APBB) specifically by the Head of Bali Education Agency, TIA Kusuma Wardani, indicate that there is something wrong with the methods presently being used to preserve the Balinese language. The APBB strives to ensure that Balinese language, both written and oral are preserved though mandatory curriculum for elementary schools. In response to the issue of linguistic pres-
ervation, Head of the Balinese Language and Literary Studies department at Udayana University, Wayan Swardiana, urges the people of Bali to seriously evaluate policies regarding the teaching of Balinese as well as the general orientation of the inheritance process. According to Swardiana, there is currently a lack of dedication to the teaching of Balinese. Language teaching materials seem to be managed without regards to standards for the teaching of the Balinese language. “I see there is interference by the Balinese language books mafia. Language
books no longer refer to standard Balinese language but instead focus on a dialectical approach,” he criticized. Swardiana says that dialectical language teaching focuses on regional differences. “Teaching materials are not the same all over Bali. They are prepared by teachers in each county/municipality.
