Aniston, Hamm, Hudson set to Stand Up to Cancer Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — Jennifer Aniston, Jon Hamm, Halle Berry, Reese Witherspoon and Kiefer Sutherland want to connect with you about cancer. They are among the stars slated to appear on “Stand Up to Cancer,” the hour-long telethon set to air Sept. 5 on 31 broadcast and cable networks simultaneously. LOS ANGELES — A photographer sued Justin Bieber and one of his bodyguards Wednesday for assault and infliction of emotional distress over an altercation on Hawaiian beach last year. The lawsuit by paparazzo Aja Oxman states Bieber ordered his bodyguard to take a memory card after the photog-

rapher took photos of the pop singer leaping from a cliff into the ocean. Bodyguard Dwayne Patterson placed Oxman in a chokehold and seriously injured him and damaged his camera during the November incident, the lawsuit states. The complaint seeks unspecified damages in excess of $25,000 for assault and battery, negligence and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

Patterson was arrested on suspicion of assault and later charged with seconddegree robbery. He pleaded no contest to criminal property damage and harassment and was ordered to pay Oxman $6,000 in restitution, court records show. Patterson’s conviction won’t remain on his record if he does not get into further trouble, records show. Bieber, 20, was not arrested, and no charges were filed against him due to a lack of evidence that he ordered Patterson to attack Oxman, Kauai County Prosecuting Attorney Justin Kollar said Wednesday. Kollar said Patterson had fully paid restitution to Oxman. Email messages sent to Bieber’s publicist Melissa Victor and attorney Howard Weitzman were not immediately returned. A phone message left for attorney Craig De Costa, who represented Patterson in the criminal case, was not immediately returned. In addition to Oxman’s lawsuit, Bieber is being sued by other photographers who accuse him of roughing them up. One case remains pending in Miami, and another paparazzo sued Bieber for assault and battery in June 2013 over an altercation at a shopping center in the celebrity enclave of Calabasas. Dalianto, a 57-year-old protester who like many Indonesians goes by one name, earlier said that he was showing his support for Prabowo as he was the “true president”. DENPASAR - Public prosecutor Gusti Nyoman Widana and Ni Made Lumisensi prosecuting the murder case against the U.S. citizen Paul Robb Latourell, Wednesday (Aug 20) presented three witnesses. They included Wayan Ek, Made Ra (victim’s gay couple) and Kadek Wa (owner of the home contracted by victim). The case involved two defendants. However, since the file was separated, the trial was separated as well. The first defendant to be prosecuted was the defendant Multazam Aulawi, 19. He was accompanied by his lawyer named Very. The first witness giving testi-

mony was Ek. The man looking like a woman in the trial led by AA Ketut Anom Wirakanta explained that he knew the victim was killed after getting information via phone that cellular phone of his boss (victim) could not be contacted. “I got a call if the cellular phone of Paul was inactive. His cellular phone vanished,” said Ek. To make sure, Ek rushed to go to Jalan Banteng, where the victim rented a house, on Monday after the murder. Upon arrival in the area of the house, the padlock was not locked and the front door of the house, either. The witness tried to go in and push the door. “I shouted Paul, Paul, Paul, but there was no answer,”

said the witness. Through another door, Ek could get into guest room and there he found blood spots. “I also saw the victim’s legs on bed,” he said. Being afraid, Ek then screamed for help and local residents rushed to the victim’s house. Defendant’s lawyer had asked whether Ek was also the gay couple of the victim Paul. Ek said no. He just worked like a house maid. The second witness was Ra. Ra was the victim’s gay couple. Similarly, he did not know exactly how it happened. However, he knew about the victim’s belonging, including the cellular phone often used to make communication. Even, the witness Ra claimed to have a deal

Marsianus was accompanied by his lawyers Edy Hartaka and Agus Sujoko with the same witnesses, namely Wayan Ek, Made Ra and Kadek Wa. In essence, they gave almost the same testimony. As reported previously, the murder case was alleged to begin with dissatisfaction of the gay couple occurred on Jalan Banteng, Denpasar. The victim was Paul, a U.S. citizen who contracted a house at the location. The victim died of some stabbings so that blood spurted everywhere. Two people were identified as the suspects (now the defendants) in this case. They included Marsianus Simarto, 30, and Multazam Aulawi, 19. Both were threatened with maximally death penalty. (asa)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Young Indian shakes up fashion with prints and pret

MUMBAI - She’s already a leading name in Indian fashion, with customers ranging from top Bollywood stars to teenage girls on pocket money. Yet 25-year-old Masaba Gupta -- best-known for her quirky cow and camera prints that adorn saris, dresses and even smartphone covers -- puts much of her whirlwind success down to intuition. “My gut just somehow ... tells me that this is going to be the next big thing. Luckily I know it before anyone else does,” she told AFP at her flagship “Masaba” store in Mumbai’s trendy suburb of Juhu. The daughter of West Indies cricket legend Viv Richards and Bollywood actress Neena Gupta -- who shared a relationship in the 1980s -- the young designer said many people “write me off as a product of my parents and social media”, but her clothes appear to be challenging the critics. Alongside the rise of her eponymous brand, Gupta was in 2012

appointed the youngest creative director for prestigious ethnic wear label Satya Paul -- a rare move in the world of Indian fashion houses, which tend not to hire big outside names. From lipstick patterns to the Tamil script, her unconventional trademark prints have proved so popular that counterfeits have flowed into the market, spurring her recently to set up the more affordable “Masaba Lite” line for teenagers. Attending catwalk shows as a student, she found Indian fashion “was running at this really slow, stale pace” with an evident gap in the market. “I felt like everybody was doing bridal, there was no such thing as ‘prêt’ - ready-to-wear was just not something that you heard of,” said Gupta, who officially opened the winter edition of Lakme Fashion Week in Mumbai on Tuesday by displaying one of her collections.

“A designer needs to sell either bridal or mass (fashion) to be able to make money, and at the end of the day it is about making money. I can’t do bridal, it’s not my aesthetic, so I thought that I’ll go the mass way.” Selling clothes and accessories in the range of 900-6,000 rupees ($15-98) in her new Masaba Lite line, Gupta is hoping it will become “like an Indian H&M”, referring to the hugely popular Swedish high street chain. “Why buy a fake when you can get the original at the same price?” says the website for the brand, which she has launched with Western wear but intends to expand into Indian clothing. Gupta said she wants young girls “to own a sari each”, recalling an occasion when three teenagers walked into her shop and pulled

their pocket money together to buy a single drape. When designing for the Masaba brand, her original higher-end label aimed at women in their twenties, Gupta naturally veered towards a fusion of styles -- be it Westernised prints on Indian silhouettes or vice versa. Fashion writer Shefalee Vasudev, author of “Powder Room: The Untold Story of Indian Fashion”, hailed Gupta’s “refreshing” approach to prints, saying her idea of India “doesn’t derive from self-conscious patriotism for the crafts legacies of our country”. Bali exports US$3.12 million worth of rattan crafts

DENPASAR - Bali earned US$3.12 million from the exports of rattan craft products in the first five months of 2014 or a 618.8 percent increase from the same period last year. Head of the provincial office of the Central Bureau of Statistics Panasunan Siregar said here on Thursday that rattan craft products were exported mainly yo Japan, the United States and Europe. In the January-May period in 2013, Bali’s exports of rattan craft products were valued at US$434,735, data at the provincial industry and trade office showed. The export volume of rattan craft products from Bali surged 118.63 percent to 88,353 units from 40,412 units in the same period. Rattan craft products contribute 1.45 percent to the total export value of Bali that reached US$215.04 million in the five month period. Bali has no forests or plantation to produce raw rattan. Raw rattan, therefore, is supplied from other regions mainly Sulawesi, Kalimantan and Papua.

From the results of investigation by the officers, most of the beggars came from Karangasem County. They used to take action from late afternoon until early morning. After arrested by the officers, the beggars were taken to the office of Badung Social and Labor Agency to get coaching. After given a coaching, the beggars were repatriated to their home village. Dewa Oka admitted that it was difficult to resolve the problem of beggars especially in the tourism area and was only handled by Badung alone. The Head of Buleleng Culture and Tourism Agency, Ketut Warkadea, said on Wednesday (Aug 20) the new building site would be located in the south of Gedong Kertya. At least it could have been completed next October and could be used in November. “We target the completion next October and in November the palmleaf manuscript storage can have been used accordingly, either for storing palm-leaf manuscript, reading room or digitization process of the palm-leaf manuscript,” he said. He said the new building construction would not disturb the process of storing and reading palm-leaf manuscript because the building space was quite far from the reading room. “We build the new building in the back. Surely it will not disrupt the process of storage because the storage space and reading room are located in front area,” he said. The old collections of the palm-leaf manuscript of Gedong Kertya required special handling so that the storage process would be better. Storage room would also be equipped with digitization and translator of the manuscripts dominantly written in Old Javanese language. “It needs special care so that the existing palm-leaf manuscript turns more durable. Meanwhile, Franklin Graham, president of Samaritan’s Purse, said in a statement that Brantly

has recovered. “Today I join all of our Samaritan’s Purse team around the world in giving thanks to God as we celebrate Dr. Kent Brantly’s recovery from Ebola and release from the hospital,” Graham’s statement said. Brantly and Nancy Writebol were flown out of the west African nation of Liberia earlier this month and have been getting treatment for the deadly disease in an isolation unit at the hospital. The two were infected while working at a missionary clinic outside Liberia’s capital. The Ebola outbreak has killed 1,350 people and counting across West Africa. Ebola is only spread through direct contact with the bodily fluids of sick people experiencing symptoms.

German doctor accused of drugging, abusing women Associated Press

BERLIN — Authorities in Germany have arrested a hospital doctor on suspicion he drugged and sexually abused female patients participating in a fake clinical study he set up. German news agency dpa reported Thursday that the unidentified 48-year-old worked at a clinic in the Bavarian town of Bamberg. Prosecutors accuse him of pretending to conduct the clinical study in order to prey on his victims.

The case came to light after a young woman sought police help last month, and blood tests confirmed she had been sedated against her will. Officers searched the man’s home and office Monday and found electronic evidence that indicated he had “conducted sexual acts on his helpless victim, and photographed them.” Based on the evidence, investigators believe he also assaulted other — as yet unidentified — women.

But observers believe he has no other realistic options left to challenge the result. JAKARTA - Commander of the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) General Moeldoko has instructed military officers securing the Constitutional Court (MK) to not carry live ammunition. The general here on Thursday personally conducted a random weapon inspection to ensure that none of them were carrying live ammunition. He warned errant officers of an impending sanction related to losing their positions. “No officer is allowed to carry live ammunition. If they do not follow the instruction, I will punish the commanders,” General Moeldoko stated at a row call prior to securing the MK’s verdict on election dispute. He, however, instructed the military officers to properly follow standard procedures including taking firm actions against those committing anarchism. Meanwhile, the Indonesian National Police cordoned off 21 locations bordering Jakarta in a bid to secure the verdict session of the election dispute trial at the MK. National Police spokesman Inspector General Ronny F. Sompie stated on Wednesday that several locations near Jakarta have been cordoned off in an effort to prevent mass exodus to Jakarta. “We have increased security and cordoned off 14 locations on the border between Jakarta and West Java,” Ronny noted. However, he refused to divulge further details regarding the locations as he did not want to risk the safety of on-duty personnel. “Information about the areas being cordoned off has been kept a secret. If we reveal the location it will endanger our personnel,” he affirmed. Bouchard, Wozniacki upset at Connecticut Open Associated Press

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Third-seeded Eugenie Bouchard of Canada and four-time champion Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark both suffered straight-set upsets Wednesday in the second round of the Connecticut Open. Bouchard lost 6-2, 6-2 to Australian Samantha Stosur. The Canadian, ranked No. 8 in the world, played with her left thigh wrapped after straining her hamstring in practice this week. The injury left her visibly struggling with her mobility throughout the match. “It’s obviously not ideal; I’ve had to cut back a little bit on practice time, but I should be good to go pretty soon,” she said. Bouchard said her personal trainer will join her in New York and said she does not expect the injury to have much of an impact on her performance at next week’s U.S. Open. Stosur, ranked No. 25 in the world, dominated the match, winning almost 70 percent of the points on her serve, while breaking Bouchard’s serve twice in each set. “My serve is a weapon, and sometimes it doesn’t act like that, so it’s important for me to really use that part of my game to my best advantage,” said Stosur, who will play in her first quarterfinal since January. Wozniacki, the fourth seed, was beaten 6-4, 6-2 by Camila Giorgi of Italy.

Giorgi, who also beat Wozniacki in last year’s U.S. Open, faced just two break points. Her first serves reached 117 mph and her second serves hovered around 107 mph. She consistently hit ground strokes at Wozniacki’s feet, preventing her from moving laterally. The 37thranked Giorgi broke Wozniacki’s serve in the first game of the match and twice in the second set. “I think today the serve was the key and really consistent,” she said. It was the earliest exit at this tournament for Wozniacki, who has appeared in New Haven seven times. She won in each of her first four trips and lost in the semifinals in 2012 and 2013. Wozniacki is ranked No. 11 and was seeded fourth this year. But she also has been training to run the New York Marathon while keeping up a full tennis schedule. She said

Justin Gatlin hasn’t felt this lean or this quick or even this hungry — he’s cut way back on cheeseburgers and chocolate — in quite some time. Using a shorter, more compact stride, the American sprinter has won all 11 of his 100-meter races this season, although none have been against a certain person named Usain Bolt. Yet, no matter how many events Gatlin wins or how fast he flies down the track, there’s one thing he can’t outrun — his checkered past. Although he’s four years removed from serving his four-year doping suspension, some meets still refuse to include him. Gatlin wasn’t invited to the Diamond League race in Stockholm on Thursday. UEFA says the Netherlands club must close a section of its De Kuip stadium for the second leg of its Europa League playoff, and pay a 45,000 euros fine ($60,000). Footage posted online appears

to show Feyenoord fans chanting a religious insult at the visiting club during the July 30 match. Besiktas won 2-1 and later advanced to the playoff round. UEFA says its disciplinary panel also charged Feyenoord with crowd disturbances after fans threw fireworks and missiles during the same match . Feyenoord’s sanction will be enforced when it hosts Ukraine’s Zorya Luhansk next week.
