Scrapbooks give peek inside Hemingway’s early life Associated Press Writer
BOSTON — Long before Ernest Hemingway first wrote a story, his mother was busy writing about him. Grace Hall Hemingway started a series of scrapbooks documenting the childhood of the future Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winner by describing how the sun shone and robins sang on the day in July 1899 when he was born. Starting Sunday, the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston will make the content of five Hemingway scrapbooks available online for the first time, giving fans and scholars the chance to follow the life of one of the 20th century’s literary greats from diapers to high school degree. Hemingway Collection curator Susan Wrynn said much of the content hasn’t been made available to the public before
and only a few researchers have seen it in its entirety. The fragile leather-bound volumes have been kept in a dark vault for about four decades to keep them from falling apart. The release of these records from the archive, home to 90 percent of existing Hemingway manuscript materials, will come on what would have been the scribe’s 114th birthday. “I think it will be a very rich resource for people interested in learning about this period of his life,” Sean Hemingway, the author’s grandson, said in an interview with The Associated Press. “He had tremendous talent. It must have been there from the beginning. So I’m sure there are clues in there to that.” Pennsylvania State University professor Sandra Spanier, who is general editor of a project that will publish Hemingway’s letters in more than a dozen volumes, said
the scrapbooks that the author’s mother created offer details of his daily life up until age 18 that aren’t anywhere else. “She almost made their lives into a story ... and I think that carries over into his life and his fiction,” she said. There’s a scribbling from when Hemingway wasn’t quite 3 years old that the future war correspondent and novelist — who later won a Pulitzer Prize for “The Old Man and the Sea” — told his mother depicted the roaring sea. Other early passages also hinted at the writer Hemingway would become. Before he was 4, Hemingway was trooping into the woods to go hunting with his father and “using long words” and making “sage remarks,” according to his mother, who enclosed photos of her son trout fishing and holding his own rifle. “Can cock my own gun,” one of her captions read.

Moreover, the gubernatorial decree on the reclamation permit had legal flaws so that it should be declared null and
void. “In the future, there should be no longer the making of any policy going up against the higher rules,” he said. Prof. Wijaya also hoped there would be NGOs or community members that oversaw the issues seriously and then investigated as well as reported it the law enforcement officers over the bribery allegations in relation to the issuance of the permit. Any inmate escapes, shoot on the spot Tabanan (Bali Post)—
Security of the Tabanan Correctional Institution (LP) was tightened, Saturday (Jul 20). Such an effort was taken to anticipate any riot kindled by overload dwellers. County Police assigned armed officers to assist the wardens. Meanwhile, the patrol activity by subdistrict police was also increased. Police threatened to shoot on sight when any inmates were desperate to escape. Chief of Tabanan Police, Dekananto Eko Purnomo, explained there were seven critical points in the Tabanan Correctional Institution. They consisted of the four tower monitors, archive office, firearm warehouse and the main entrance gates. The seventh points could potentially be targeted by prisoners during a riot inside. “We’ve specifically paid attention to the security in the Correctional Institution. On day off, we assign the help of four armed personnel,” said Police Chief after monitoring the security conditions of the Tabanan Correctional Institution, last Saturday. Described, the overloaded inmates in the Tabanan Correctional Institution could potentially trigger a riot. Moreover, similar case had occurred in Tanjung Gusta Correctional Institution, Medan. If any riot broke out, he said, police would deploy
personnel to help secure the entire correctional officers. The process of securing had complied with the standard operating procedures. “If any inmates are desperate to escape after being given a warning, we will definitely shoot them on the spot,” he said. Other than involving police, the security assistance also involved the Indonesian Military (TNI) personnel, firefighters and the surrounding community. In other words, when any riots occurred, residents would also be involved to keep the Correctional Institution. Total county police reached 1,200 personnel and 600 personnel of them were ascertained to be fully alerted in case any riots occurred. Meanwhile, the Head of Tabanan Correctional Institution, Yuli Hartono, said the Tabanan Correctional Institution was dwelt by 140 inmates.
Of this total number, 18 people were women inmates. Ideally, it should be inhabited by maximally 47 people. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Comic creations cross borders to film, TV, makeup Associated Press Writer
SAN DIEGO — There’s no such thing as just a comic book hero anymore. From big-screen films and small-screen animation to books, clothes and makeup, the hero business is big business. Two decades ago, the only place to find the X-Men was in the pages of comics and on Saturday morning cartoons. Now, they, and others, like Superman, Batman and the zombies from “The Walking Dead” are cultural juggernauts, crossing over into everything. And nowhere is that more evident than at Comic-Con International. Once just 300 or so attendees in a hotel, the event now hosts more than 100,000 visitors over four days and is a top destination for film and television companies, not to mention marketers of apparel and other products, too. Attendees can wear Avengers perfume while walking in Converse high-tops that have the Joker or Batman on the sides. They’re buying glass tumblers with Marvel superheroes on them, T-shirts that bear the logo of Green Lantern, and hats with The Flash lightning bolt on the front. It’s no surprise, either, said Rob Salkowitz, a consultant and author of “Comic-Con and the Business of Pop Culture.” Comics have been a foundation of entertainment for decades, but since the 1990s, the advent of better technology in film and TV has seen what was once a staple of four-color comics transform into visual spectacles.
“Superheroes were created because it was a good fit for the print technology in the 1930s and 1940s,” Salkowitz said. “What happened in the late 1990s is the technology for video games and movies finally got good enough to realize the imagery of comic books in a satisfying way.” To wit, Bruce Banner’s eye-popping transformation into the Incredible Hulk is easy to do, and realistic. Now, there’s a demand for content to fill stories of all stripes. Robert Kirkman’s “The Walking Dead” was a black-and-white comic drawing rave reviews. Now it’s a toprated TV show commanding millions of viewers, helping boost sales of collected editions of the graphic novels and driving interest in hiring comic book scribes for television. Brian Michael Bendis, who writes for Marvel Entertainment, had a pilot shot for his “Powers” series that he does with Michael Avon Oeming. Kirkman is also going into television again with “Clone,” a comic series created and written by David Schulner for his Skybound imprint. On Saturday, it was announced that “Clone” had landed a development deal with Universal Television. Schulner credited Kirkman for guidance in doing that, too. “I knew if I went off the rails too

And it’s not just heroes, either. Archie Comics’ Sabrina was turned into the popular TV sitcom “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” starring Melissa Joan Hart. It ran for seven seasons. Salkowitz said comics have “70 years of backstory” and an “emotion-
al resonance” on nearly everyone. “It becomes a very easy thing for Hollywood and video game manufacturers to plug right in to this existing mythology,” he said. “They don’t have to invent it all themselves. They don’t have to jumpstart universes.”

Economic interest affects determination of location Indication of the economic motives in the airport development plan is the rising of debates related to determination of the airport location. Apparently, there are two parties having different opinion in the location determination. One party has the airport built in Kubutambahan (Eastern Buleleng) for various reasons, while another party has the airport built at Sumberkima (Western Buleleng). Now, in the planning process looking tedious, both parties seem to be fighting their strategies to realize their own intention. At the beginning of July, in a hearing of Special Committee of the Regional Spatial Plan of the Buleleng House and the executive in the Buleleng House was revealed if the airport location had been determined in Kubutambahan area. At that time, Chairman of the Special Committee
of the Regional Spatial Plan, Putu Mangku Mertayasa, said the certainty of the airport location in Kubutambahan area was already quite strong. Moreover, the certainty of the location had been supported by a letter from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, Ministry of Transportation, where the location of the international airport was in Kubutambahan subdistrict. “The letter has been available and at the same time it has answered if the airport location is in Buleleng and cannot move any longer,” he said. According to Mertayasa, with the certainty of the airport location in Kubutambahan, then Kubutambahan would be included in the Buleleng Spatial Plan as the airport location. “We have proposed to include Kubutambahan under the clause in the regional bylaw draft of the Buleleng
Spatial Plan and Bali Regional Spatial Plan, so that this must be coherent,” he explained. However, before the inclusion of Kubutambahan as the airport location into the Regional Spatial Plan, at the same time a meeting was also held in Bali provincial government related to the airport location. At the meeting, the Regent of Buleleng Putu Agus Suradnyana was accompanied by the Head of Buleleng Development Planning Board (Bappeda), Gede Suyasa. After meeting in the provincial government, the discourse of airport location then moved to Sumberkima. Even, some government officials had made site inspection to Sumberkima so that it gave impression if the airport would actually be built in Western Buleleng. On the other hand, though the provincial government established the airport location at Sumberkima, a number of parties in Buleleng apparently still expected the airport to be built in Kubutambahan for various reasons. DENPASAR - Cement producer PT Holcim Indonesia has got a boost from construction growth in Bali so that nationally its sales performance has not been affected significantly by recent fuel price hike, vice president Juhans Suryantan said. “Nationally, growth of cement sales this year tends to slow down but we have been able to take advantage of construction growth in Bali,” he said here on Saturday evening. He said the company would continue to take the opportunity offered by hotel development growth ahead of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) conference on the island later this year. “Even sales growth in Bali this year is far above other regions. Any activities related to spatial utilization should refer to relevant provisions. In the Benoa Bay reclamation plan, the provisions in use remained vague and seemed to have been forced. It was revealed by a former legislator of the Badung House, I Ketut Sugiana. Sugiana recently revealed that any action to change the landscape belonged to a legal act. Thus, Benoa Bay reclamation should comply with the legal requirements such as the Act No. 32/2004 on Regional Government. In article 18, it was stipulated about the authority of regional government to marine territory. The authority included the management (exploration, exploitation, conservation and management of marine resources), the arrangement of administration, space and so on. The authority of provincial and county government had been clearly stipulated in paragraph 4 where the province had the authority to manage 12 nautical miles from the coast, while the county/municipal government along 4 nautical miles. In other words, the Badung County should immediately take action officially against the Benoa Bay reclamation plan. He also requested the relevant parties to act wisely and not to be influenced by the desire of some people wishing to make profits in short term, while it had negative impacts on the sociopolitical and economic life in the region. Similar opinion was also expressed by Putu Parwata, a legislator of the Badung House. According to him, the policy instrument should be clear to avoid overlapping rules and mutual accusing. Reclamation plan was not only determined in the provincial government, but should be opened and examined based on the regulations on spatial plan of the county/ municipal government. This Chairman of the Special Committee of the Badung Spatial Plan said the House had not discussed yet about the continuation of the regional bylaw on the Badung Spatial Plan. Necessarily, it should become a consideration in the reclamation plan. Completion of the regional bylaw on Spatial Plan should also include the zonation. Having been completed, it should be resumed with the elaboration in the form of Detailed Spatial Plan. Headless woman corpse found rotting Gianyar (Bali Post)—
A headless woman corpse was found decomposing on Friday afternoon (Jul 19) on a cliff of Dadapan River, right at the border of Tegal Tugu and Serongga village, Gianyar. The unidentified corpse was evacuated up to Friday midnight at 11:00 p.m. The corpse was found around 5:30 p.m. by I Made Wardana, 28, a resident from Manggis, Karangasem, living at Tegal Tugu village, with his friend Nyoman Rai Raka when they were hunting around the cliff. Information on the discovery of the corpse then spread through word of mouth to police. Once checked, it was true and in very poor condition. Moreover, the headless corpse had exuded pungent odor. It had been evacuated by SAR team of the Gianyar Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) and the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI Gianyar). None of the Serongga villagers could identify the corpse although there was information if one of the family members at Serongga Kaja Serongga was reported to have been missing since 25 days before. “We have not dared to ascertain if the body is our missing resident,” said hamlet chief of Serongga Kaja, IB Eka, when met at location.

Fatal Indian school meal contained pesticide, police confirms Reuters
PATNA, India - An initial forensic report has confirmed that the free school lunch that killed 23 children this week in India’s eastern state of Bihar was contaminated with a pesticide, a senior police
official said on Saturday. The children fell ill within minutes of eating a meal of rice and potato curry in their one-room school on Tuesday, vomiting and convulsing with agonizing stomach cramps. The deaths sparked protests in
Bihar. The lunch was part of India’s Mid-Day Meal Scheme that covers 120 million children and aims to tackle malnutrition and encourage school attendance. It had already drawn widespread complaints over food safety. The report found the meal
was prepared with cooking oil that contained monocrotophos, an organophosphorus compound that is used as an agricultural pesticide, Ravindra Kumar, a senior police official, told reporters. Police said on Friday they sus-
pected the oil was kept in a container previously used to store the pesticide. They are still looking for the headmistress of the school, who fled after the deaths. The World Health Organization describes monocrotophos as highly hazardous.

WASHINGTON - The city of Detroit’s record bankruptcy filing has cast a cloud over the US municipal bond market as creditors face potential steep losses on the typically safe investment. Bond holders are nervously awaiting a federal judge’s decision on Detroit’s request Thursday for bankruptcy protection as it seeks relief from a staggering $18.5 billion debt. The biggest US city bankruptcy in the nation’s history was not unexpected, given decades of decaying finances in the once-mighty automotive capital known as Motor City. “Are we about to enter a new era of municipal finance? The debts of many municipal entities are large enough to make the current state of affairs more compelling for bankruptcy. It all depends on how much debt you can erase,” said Robert Brusca of FAO Economics. “Detroit bears watching very closely. It is both a special case and a paradigm,” he said. The Detroit bankruptcy reorganization filing, if approved, is expected to make it harder for municipalities in Michigan and other US states to borrow money by undermining confidence in what used to be among the most trusted bonds available.
The White House says it was monitoring the situation but the Obama administration has not signaled it would throw the city a lifeline. On Friday, ratings firm Standard & Poor’s cut its rating on Detroit’s general obligation (GO) debt from “CC” to “C”, just one notch above default, and said the outlook was “negative.” About half of Detroit’s debt is owed to the pension funds and retiree health care benefits of the city’s 10,000 workers and 20,000 retirees. Detroit Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr said the city has about $2 billion to repay $12 billion in “unsecured” debt, which includes the pension obligations. In mid-June, Orr proposed negotiations for writedowns to creditors as the insolvent city was forced to defer payments on some obligations. It was not known how long the federal judge would take to make a decision on whether Detroit is eligible for Chapter 9 protection. Leon LaBrecque, head of LJPR, a Troy, Michiganbased wealth management firm, said the filing has cast Detroit into “uncharted waters.” The restructuring proposal classifies Detroit’s unlimited-tax general obligation bonds as unsecured, meaning returns are not guaranteed, whereas municipal bond investors generally view them as being backed by a pledge of tax revenue.

ARLINGTON, Texas — An Arlington police sergeant says a woman who died while riding a roller coaster at a Six Flags amusement park in North Texas fell from the ride. Sgt. Christopher Cook told The Associated Press on Saturday that police believe the woman fell Friday at Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington, and that there appears to have been no foul play. He says police, fire and emergency medical services responded to the park around 6:45 p.m. Friday in reference to a woman who had fallen from a train car while riding a roller coaster. SEMARANG - A senior manpower official has suggested that would-be Indonesian migrant workers opt to work in Asia Pacific countries because protection for workers in this region is more guaranteed. “Protection for Indonesian workers in Asia Pacific countries like Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore is relatively comprehensive where workers are recognized as an equal partner by their employers,” Head of the National Agency for Protection and Placement of Indonesian Workers Abroad (BNP2TKI) Jumhur Hidayat said. The BNP2TKI made the statement after having a fasting predawn meals together with 98 would-be migrant workers at manpower supplier firm PT Maharani Tri Utama Mandiri early on Sunday. He said that the number of Indonesian workers dispatched for overseas jobs in Asia Pacific countries continued to increase every year. “The government stopped sending Indonesian workers to a number of countries in the Middle East because employers in these countries do not treat workers as equal partners,” he said. Indonesian migrant workers working in certain Middle East countries could not quit or launch a protest at will. The presence of workers depended a lot on the recommendation job providers.
“In Asia Pacific countries, there is an equal partnership relation, where a worker would be employed because he or she is needed. And this is arranged in a good regulation. This is also the reason why the number of cases (of labor problem) in the Middle East is bigger,” he said. Jumhur said earlier that at present there were about 6 to 7 million Indonesian migrant workers in about 100 countries with remittance reaching over Rp100 trillion per annum. He said that Indonesia will do its best to increase the number of its formal, semi-skilled, skilled and professional workers sent for employment overseas. “The government is gradually reducing the number of its informal workers abroad such as housemaids, drivers and plantation workers,” the head of the National Agency for Placement and Protection of Indonesian Workers Overseas said. BANDUNG - From a painting hung high on a blood-red wall, Adolf Hitler peers down on young students eating schnitzel and slurping German beer in Indonesia’s Nazi-themed cafe. The SoldatenKaffee (“The Soldiers’ Cafe”) opened its doors in the western Javanese city of Bandung in 2011, named after the popular hangout for soldiers in Germany and occupied Paris during World War II. Eerier than the gas mask canisters and battle flags bearing swastikas is the more than two years’ silence that has followed the cafe’s grand launch. When the cafe opened no one voiced offence at the waiters and guests dressed as Nazi soldiers -- the Holocaust is weak on the radar in Indonesia, home to the world’s biggest Muslim population, where the Jewish community numbers a mere 20 people. But a recent report about SoldatenKaffee in the English-language Jakarta Globe newspaper triggered angry responses online and prompted Bandung deputy mayor Ayi Vivananda to summon the owner for a meeting. “We need to ask him first in detail what his real intentions are. But what is clear is that Bandung city will not allow anyone here inciting racial hatred,” he said on Thursday. The cafe’s creator and owner, Henry Mulyana, said he did not intend to bring back memories of the Holocaust but was not surprised to be branded a “bad guy”. “I don’t idolise Hitler, I simply adore the soldiers’ paraphernalia,” Mulyana, a Christian who likes playing with air rifles, told AFP at the cafe on Tuesday.
His collection is on display for diners and includes a water canteen, bayonet, goggles and a lantern, most of them bought online. “The ones with swastikas on them are worth more,” he said. The restaurant had only ever received positive press before the recent exposure in English-language media and receives a regular stream of customers. “We’re living in Indonesia and Indonesians weren’t tortured in the Holocaust, so we don’t really care,” said mining company employee Arya Setya, eating a plate of spaghetti at the cafe with his girlfriend. But now that news of the cafe’s existence has reached a wider audience, it has sparked outrage among Jewish communities in other parts of the world. “The Simon Wiesenthal Center is reaching out to senior Indonesian diplomats to express on behalf of our 400,000 members and victims of the Nazi Holocaust our outrage and disgust,” Rabbi Abraham Cooper, from the Los Angeles-based Jewish human rights group, told AFP by email. “We expect that all appropriate measures will be taken to close down this business celebrating a genocidal ideology that at its core denigrates people of color and all non-Aryans,” he wrote. Under Indonesian law, anyone who deliberately shows hatred towards others based on race or ethnicity can be jailed for up to five years. But such vilification usually goes unchecked, with hardline Muslim groups carrying out violent attacks on religious minorities with near impunity in recent years.

WEST BERLIN, New Jersey — Two NBA championship rings that Kobe Bryant gave to his parents each sold for more than $100,000 at auction. Goldin Auctions said six items of Bryant memorabilia sold for a combined $433,531 in the monthlong auction that closed Saturday. A 2000 Lakers championship ring gifted by Bryant to his father, Joe, sold for $174,184. A ring given to his mother, Pamela, from the same championship season went for $108,153. Bryant had filed a suit against the auction company, saying his mother didn’t have the right to sell the items. A settlement was reached last month allowing six items to be auctioned after the five-time NBA champion’s parents apologized to their son. As part of the sale, Goldin Auctions is donating $62,565 to The Bully Project, a Bryant-supported charity.

Froome’s lead is more than five minutes over both of them. Froome said only when he passed the sign showing two kilometers (about one mile) to go on the final steep uphill did he allow himself to believe he’d won the Tour. “It actually became quite
hard to concentrate,” he said. “A very emotional feeling.” Alberto Contador, who was second overall at the start of the day, struggled on that climb and dropped off the podium. Saturday’s 125-kilometer (78mile) trek was the last of four successive stages in the Alps and the final significant obstacle Froome needed to overcome before Sunday’s usually relaxed ride to the finish in Paris. WEST BERLIN, New Jersey — Two NBA championship rings that Kobe Bryant gave to his parents each sold for more than $100,000 at auction. Goldin Auctions said six items of Bryant memorabilia sold for a combined $433,531 in the monthlong auction that closed Saturday. A 2000 Lakers championship ring gifted by Bryant to his father, Joe, sold for $174,184. A ring given to his mother, Pamela, from the same championship season went for $108,153. Bryant had filed a suit against the auction company, saying his mother didn’t have the right to sell the items. A settlement was reached last month allowing six items to be auctioned after the five-time NBA champion’s parents apologized to their son. As part of the sale, Goldin Auctions is donating $62,565 to The Bully Project, a Bryant-supported charity.

ARLINGTON, Texas — An Arlington police sergeant says a woman who died while riding a roller coaster at a Six Flags amusement park in North Texas fell from the ride. Sgt. Christopher Cook told The Associated Press on Saturday that police believe the woman fell Friday at Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington, and that there appears to have been no foul play. He says police, fire and emergency medical services responded to the park around 6:45 p.m. Friday in reference to a woman who had fallen from a train car while riding a roller coaster. SEMARANG - A senior manpower official has suggested that would-be Indonesian migrant workers opt to work in Asia Pacific countries because protection for workers in this region is more guaranteed. “Protection for Indonesian workers in Asia Pacific countries like Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore is relatively comprehensive where workers are recognized as an equal partner by their employers,” Head of the National Agency for Protection and Placement of Indonesian Workers Abroad (BNP2TKI) Jumhur Hidayat said. The BNP2TKI made the statement after having a fasting predawn meals together with 98 would-be migrant workers at manpower supplier firm PT Maharani Tri Utama Mandiri early on Sunday. He said that the number of Indonesian workers dispatched for overseas jobs in Asia Pacific countries continued to increase every year. “The government stopped sending Indonesian workers to a number of countries in the Middle East because employers in these countries do not treat workers as equal partners,” he said. Indonesian migrant workers working in certain Middle East countries could not quit or launch a protest at will. The presence of workers depended a lot on the recommendation job providers.
“In Asia Pacific countries, there is an equal partnership relation, where a worker would be employed because he or she is needed. And this is arranged in a good regulation. This is also the reason why the number of cases (of labor problem) in the Middle East is bigger,” he said. Jumhur said earlier that at present there were about 6 to 7 million Indonesian migrant workers in about 100 countries with remittance reaching over Rp100 trillion per annum. He said that Indonesia will do its best to increase the number of its formal, semi-skilled, skilled and professional workers sent for employment overseas. “The government is gradually reducing the number of its informal workers abroad such as housemaids, drivers and plantation workers,” the head of the National Agency for Placement and Protection of Indonesian Workers Overseas said. BANDUNG - From a painting hung high on a blood-red wall, Adolf Hitler peers down on young students eating schnitzel and slurping German beer in Indonesia’s Nazi-themed cafe. The SoldatenKaffee (“The Soldiers’ Cafe”) opened its doors in the western Javanese city of Bandung in 2011, named after the popular hangout for soldiers in Germany and occupied Paris during World War II. Eerier than the gas mask canisters and battle flags bearing swastikas is the more than two years’ silence that has followed the cafe’s grand launch. When the cafe opened no one voiced offence at the waiters and guests dressed as Nazi soldiers -- the Holocaust is weak on the radar in Indonesia, home to the world’s biggest Muslim population, where the Jewish community numbers a mere 20 people. But a recent report about SoldatenKaffee in the English-language Jakarta Globe newspaper triggered angry responses online and prompted Bandung deputy mayor Ayi Vivananda to summon the owner for a meeting. “We need to ask him first in detail what his real intentions are. But what is clear is that Bandung city will not allow anyone here inciting racial hatred,” he said on Thursday. The cafe’s creator and owner, Henry Mulyana, said he did not intend to bring back memories of the Holocaust but was not surprised to be branded a “bad guy”. “I don’t idolise Hitler, I simply adore the soldiers’ paraphernalia,” Mulyana, a Christian who likes playing with air rifles, told AFP at the cafe on Tuesday.
His collection is on display for diners and includes a water canteen, bayonet, goggles and a lantern, most of them bought online. “The ones with swastikas on them are worth more,” he said. The restaurant had only ever received positive press before the recent exposure in English-language media and receives a regular stream of customers. “We’re living in Indonesia and Indonesians weren’t tortured in the Holocaust, so we don’t really care,” said mining company employee Arya Setya, eating a plate of spaghetti at the cafe with his girlfriend. But now that news of the cafe’s existence has reached a wider audience, it has sparked outrage among Jewish communities in other parts of the world. “The Simon Wiesenthal Center is reaching out to senior Indonesian diplomats to express on behalf of our 400,000 members and victims of the Nazi Holocaust our outrage and disgust,” Rabbi Abraham Cooper, from the Los Angeles-based Jewish human rights group, told AFP by email. “We expect that all appropriate measures will be taken to close down this business celebrating a genocidal ideology that at its core denigrates people of color and all non-Aryans,” he wrote. Under Indonesian law, anyone who deliberately shows hatred towards others based on race or ethnicity can be jailed for up to five years. But such vilification usually goes unchecked, with hardline Muslim groups carrying out violent attacks on religious minorities with near impunity in recent years.

WASHINGTON - The city of Detroit’s record bankruptcy filing has cast a cloud over the US municipal bond market as creditors face potential steep losses on the typically safe investment. Bond holders are nervously awaiting a federal judge’s decision on Detroit’s request Thursday for bankruptcy protection as it seeks relief from a staggering $18.5 billion debt. The biggest US city bankruptcy in the nation’s history was not unexpected, given decades of decaying finances in the once-mighty automotive capital known as Motor City. “Are we about to enter a new era of municipal finance? The debts of many municipal entities are large enough to make the current state of affairs more compelling for bankruptcy. It all depends on how much debt you can erase,” said Robert Brusca of FAO Economics. “Detroit bears watching very closely. It is both a special case and a paradigm,” he said. The Detroit bankruptcy reorganization filing, if approved, is expected to make it harder for municipalities in Michigan and other US states to borrow money by undermining confidence in what used to be among the most trusted bonds available.
The White House says it was monitoring the situation but the Obama administration has not signaled it would throw the city a lifeline. On Friday, ratings firm Standard & Poor’s cut its rating on Detroit’s general obligation (GO) debt from “CC” to “C”, just one notch above default, and said the outlook was “negative.” About half of Detroit’s debt is owed to the pension funds and retiree health care benefits of the city’s 10,000 workers and 20,000 retirees. Detroit Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr said the city has about $2 billion to repay $12 billion in “unsecured” debt, which includes the pension obligations. In mid-June, Orr proposed negotiations for writedowns to creditors as the insolvent city was forced to defer payments on some obligations. It was not known how long the federal judge would take to make a decision on whether Detroit is eligible for Chapter 9 protection. Leon LaBrecque, head of LJPR, a Troy, Michiganbased wealth management firm, said the filing has cast Detroit into “uncharted waters.” The restructuring proposal classifies Detroit’s unlimited-tax general obligation bonds as unsecured, meaning returns are not guaranteed, whereas municipal bond investors generally view them as being backed by a pledge of tax revenue.

Any activities related to spatial utilization should refer to relevant provisions. In the Benoa Bay reclamation plan, the provisions in use remained vague and seemed to have been forced. It was revealed by a former legislator of the Badung House, I Ketut Sugiana. Sugiana recently revealed that any action to change the landscape belonged to a legal act. Thus, Benoa Bay reclamation should comply with the legal requirements such as the Act No. 32/2004 on Regional Government. In article 18, it was stipulated about the authority of regional government to marine territory. The authority included the management (exploration, exploitation, conservation and management of marine resources), the arrangement of administration, space and so on. The authority of provincial and county government had been clearly stipulated in paragraph 4 where the province had the authority to manage 12 nautical miles from the coast, while the county/municipal government along 4 nautical miles. In other words, the Badung County should immediately take action officially against the Benoa Bay reclamation plan. Headless woman corpse found rotting Gianyar (Bali Post)—
A headless woman corpse was found decomposing on Friday afternoon (Jul 19) on a cliff of Dadapan River, right at the border of Tegal Tugu and Serongga village, Gianyar. The unidentified corpse was evacuated up to Friday midnight at 11:00 p.m. The corpse was found around 5:30 p.m. by I Made Wardana, 28, a resident from Manggis, Karangasem, living at Tegal Tugu village, with his friend Nyoman Rai Raka when they were hunting around the cliff. Information on the discovery of the corpse then spread through word of mouth to police. Once checked, it was true and in very poor condition. Moreover, the headless corpse had exuded pungent odor. It had been evacuated by SAR team of the Gianyar Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) and the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI Gianyar). None of the Serongga villagers could identify the corpse although there was information if one of the family members at Serongga Kaja Serongga was reported to have been missing since 25 days before. “We have not dared to ascertain if the body is our missing resident,” said hamlet chief of Serongga Kaja, IB Eka, when met at location.

Netanyahu appeared to be lowering expectations for the talks in his first on-camera remarks since U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry’s weekend announcement that negotiations would soon resume after a five-year hiatus. Netanyahu pledged to insist on Israel’s security needs above all — saying his main guiding principles will be to maintain a Jewish majority in Israel and avoid a future Palestinian state in the West Bank becoming an Iranian-backed “terror state.” “I am committed to two objectives that must guide the result — if there will be a result. SAN DIEGO — There’s no such thing as just a comic book hero anymore. From big-screen films and small-screen animation to books, clothes and makeup, the hero business is big business. Two decades ago, the only place to find the X-Men was in the pages of comics and on Saturday morning cartoons. Now, they, and others, like Superman, Batman and the zombies from “The Walking Dead” are cultural juggernauts, crossing over into everything. And nowhere is that more evident than at Comic-Con International. Once just 300 or so attendees in a hotel, the event now hosts more than 100,000 visitors over four days and is a top destination for film and television companies, not to mention marketers of apparel and other products, too. Attendees can wear Avengers perfume while walking in Converse high-tops that have the Joker or Batman on the sides. They’re buying glass tumblers with Marvel superheroes on them, T-shirts that bear the logo of Green Lantern, and hats with The Flash lightning bolt on the front. It’s no surprise, either, said Rob Salkowitz, a consultant and author of “Comic-Con and the Business of Pop Culture.” Comics have been a foundation of entertainment for decades, but since the 1990s, the advent of better technology in film and TV has seen what was once a staple of four-color comics transform into visual spectacles.
“Superheroes were created because it was a good fit for the print technology in the 1930s and 1940s,” Salkowitz said. “What happened in the late 1990s is the technology for video games and movies finally got good enough to realize the imagery of comic books in a satisfying way.” To wit, Bruce Banner’s eye-popping transformation into the Incredible Hulk is easy to do, and realistic. Now, there’s a demand for content to fill stories of all stripes. Robert Kirkman’s “The Walking Dead” was a black-and-white comic drawing rave reviews. Now it’s a toprated TV show commanding millions of viewers, helping boost sales of collected editions of the graphic novels and driving interest in hiring comic book scribes for television. Brian Michael Bendis, who writes for Marvel Entertainment, had a pilot shot for his “Powers” series that he does with Michael Avon Oeming. Kirkman is also going into television again with “Clone,” a comic series created and written by David Schulner for his Skybound imprint. Economic interest affects determination of location Indication of the economic motives in the airport development plan is the rising of debates related to determination of the airport location. Apparently, there are two parties having different opinion in the location determination. One party has the airport built in Kubutambahan (Eastern Buleleng) for various reasons, while another party has the airport built at Sumberkima (Western Buleleng). Now, in the planning process looking tedious, both parties seem to be fighting their strategies to realize their own intention. At the beginning of July, in a hearing of Special Committee of the Regional Spatial Plan of the Buleleng House and the executive in the Buleleng House was revealed if the airport location had been determined in Kubutambahan area. At that time, Chairman of the Special Committee
of the Regional Spatial Plan, Putu Mangku Mertayasa, said the certainty of the airport location in Kubutambahan area was already quite strong. Moreover, the certainty of the location had been supported by a letter from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, Ministry of Transportation, where the location of the international airport was in Kubutambahan subdistrict. “The letter has been available and at the same time it has answered if the airport location is in Buleleng and cannot move any longer,” he said. According to Mertayasa, with the certainty of the airport location in Kubutambahan, then Kubutambahan would be included in the Buleleng Spatial Plan as the airport location. “We have proposed to include Kubutambahan under the clause in the regional bylaw draft of the Buleleng
Spatial Plan and Bali Regional Spatial Plan, so that this must be coherent,” he explained. However, before the inclusion of Kubutambahan as the airport location into the Regional Spatial Plan, at the same time a meeting was also held in Bali provincial government related to the airport location. At the meeting, the Regent of Buleleng Putu Agus Suradnyana was accompanied by the Head of Buleleng Development Planning Board (Bappeda), Gede Suyasa. After meeting in the provincial government, the discourse of airport location then moved to Sumberkima. Even, some government officials had made site inspection to Sumberkima so that it gave impression if the airport would actually be built in Western Buleleng. On the other hand, though the provincial government established the airport location at Sumberkima, a number of parties in Buleleng apparently still expected the airport to be built in Kubutambahan for various reasons. Security of the Tabanan Correctional Institution (LP) was tightened, Saturday (Jul 20). Such an effort was taken to anticipate any riot kindled by overload dwellers. County Police assigned armed officers to assist the wardens. Meanwhile, the patrol activity by subdistrict police was also increased. Police threatened to shoot on sight when any inmates were desperate to escape. Chief of Tabanan Police, Dekananto Eko Purnomo, explained there were seven critical points in the Tabanan Correctional Institution. They consisted of the four tower monitors, archive office, firearm warehouse and the main entrance gates. The seventh points could potentially be targeted by prisoners during a riot inside. “We’ve specifically paid attention to the security in the Correctional Institution. On day off, we assign the help of four armed personnel,” said Police Chief after monitoring the security conditions of the Tabanan Correctional Institution, last Saturday. Described, the overloaded inmates in the Tabanan Correctional Institution could potentially trigger a riot. Moreover, similar case had occurred in Tanjung Gusta Correctional Institution, Medan. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Scrapbooks give peek inside Hemingway’s early life Associated Press Writer
BOSTON — Long before Ernest Hemingway first wrote a story, his mother was busy writing about him. Grace Hall Hemingway started a series of scrapbooks documenting the childhood of the future Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winner by describing how the sun shone and robins sang on the day in July 1899 when he was born. Starting Sunday, the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston will make the content of five Hemingway scrapbooks available online for the first time, giving fans and scholars the chance to follow the life of one of the 20th century’s literary greats from diapers to high school degree. Hemingway Collection curator Susan Wrynn said much of the content hasn’t been made available to the public before
and only a few researchers have seen it in its entirety. The fragile leather-bound volumes have been kept in a dark vault for about four decades to keep them from falling apart. The release of these records from the archive, home to 90 percent of existing Hemingway manuscript materials, will come on what would have been the scribe’s 114th birthday. “I think it will be a very rich resource for people interested in learning about this period of his life,” Sean Hemingway, the author’s grandson, said in an interview with The Associated Press. “He had tremendous talent. It must have been there from the beginning. So I’m sure there are clues in there to that.” Pennsylvania State University professor Sandra Spanier, who is general editor of a project that will publish Hemingway’s letters in more than a dozen volumes, said

There’s a scribbling from when Hemingway wasn’t quite 3 years old that the future war correspondent and novelist — who later won a Pulitzer Prize for “The Old Man and the Sea” — told his mother depicted the roaring sea. Other early passages also hinted at the writer Hemingway would become. Before he was 4, Hemingway was trooping into the woods to go hunting with his father and “using long words” and making “sage remarks,” according to his mother, who enclosed photos of her son trout fishing and holding his own rifle. “Can cock my own gun,” one of her captions read.
