Triple Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis retiring from acting
LOS ANGELES - Three-time Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis is retiring from acting, his spokeswoman said on Tuesday, ending a storied movie career that includes performances in “Lincoln” and “Gangs of New York.” Day-Lewis, 60, the only man to have won three best actor Oscars, gave no reason for his decision, calling it private. “Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor,” his publicist, Leslee Dart, said in a statement. “He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years.” The statement said there would be no further comment. He has one more movie in the works -- “Phantom Thread,” which is set in London’s 1950s fashion world and is due to be released in December. Day-Lewis, who was born in Britain and holds dual Anglo-Irish citizenship, won his third best actor Oscar in 2013 for playing U.S. President Abraham Lincoln in “Lincoln.” His win made him the first man to be awarded three best actor Oscars in the history of the Academy Awards. He previously won Academy Awards for his roles as a paraplegic Irish writer in “My Left Foot” (1989) and a greedy early 20th century oil baron in “There Will Be Blood” (2007). The tall, intellectual actor keeps a low-key profile and is known for choosing his roles carefully and taking long breaks between films. In the late 1990s, he took time off from acting to work as an apprentice shoe-maker in Italy. After his 2013 Oscar win for “Lincoln,” London’s Sunday Times reported that he planned to take a sabbatical at his farm in Ireland. Day-Lewis is known for his meticulous preparation. For “Lincoln,” he spent months researching Lincoln’s political and personal life and before shooting began he was texting his screen wife, Sally Field, in 19th century vernacular. “For My Left Foot,” he spent weeks living in a wheelchair, and while shooting “Gangs of New York” he was known for sharpening knives between takes to capture the menace of his character Bill “The Butcher” Cutting. The Hollywood star visited at least 20 of girls in a safe house in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi. They had fled conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Sudan, Somalia, Burundi and Rwanda, UNHCR said in a statement.
It said almost all had experienced sexual and gender-based violence and many had given birth after being raped or were pregnant. “The role of sexual violence is compounded when it is carried out by someone in uniform who
has taken an oath to protect,” Jolie said. “So it is a responsibility of those who wear uniform to take the lead now by correcting from within, setting an example astepping forward with new commitments.” The UNHCR says Kenya hosts some 491,000 refugees, of which 101,713 are from South Sudan, which the U.N. has said is the world’s fastest growing refugee crisis. Extreme heat grips Northern Hemisphere on summer solstice
SINGAPORE - Extreme heat across large tracts of the Northern Hemisphere raised fears for crops in China, fuelled forest fires in Portugal and Russia’s Far East, forced flight cancellations in the Southwest U.S., and melted tarmac on roads in Britain. As Wednesday marked the summer solstice - the longest day of the year - forecasters said temperatures in Paris were expected to hit 37 Celsius (100 Fahrenheit), Madrid could see 38C, and London was set for 34C with warnings of thunderstorms. Rounding up the record temperatures set in the past two months, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said the Earth was experiencing “another exceptionally warm year” and the heatwaves were unusually early. “Parts of Europe, the Middle East, North Africa and the United States of America have seen extremely high May and June temperatures, with a number of records broken,” the WMO said late on Tuesday. The trend seen during the past two months has put average monthly global temperatures among the highest ever recorded since data began to be collated in
1880. Even before this month, U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) data showed Europe, the United States and Northeast Asia - including eastern China, Japan and South Korea - had experienced unusually warm weather between March and May. In China, the world’s top grain producer, hot and dry conditions in the main corn belt have delayed plantings and stunted crop development, especially in the province of Liaoning where soil moisture levels are at their lowest in at least five years. A study published earlier this week found that nearly one in three of the world’s people were already exposed to potentially

Vehicles leaving Bali starts to increase
NEGARA - Homecoming traffic through Gilimanuk Harbor on Monday night began to turn crowded. Incoming vehicles were dominated by motorcycles, private cars and trucks. The homecomers averagely came from East Java and West Java. They accidentally went home in advance to avoid traffic jam.
By early morning the vehicle traffic, especially private vehicles, remained crowded. The authority of ASDP Gilimanuk provides a 100-meter tent outside the main ticket counter. It is intended to anticipate the surge of vehicles, especially motorcycle estimated to occur on the fourth to second day before holiday. Aside from outside the ticket counter, tents are also installed inside the harbor parking area. In addition to private vehicles, the trucks wishing to return to Java are also crowded in Gilimanuk. Special for freight vehicles such as trucks and box vehicle, their ticket purchases are directed to the LCM dock. In the meantime, the front ticket counters are devoted to private cars. Until Tuesday morning, the vehicles queuing from the night remain to look crowded in the parking area of Gilimanuk Harbor. Though showing traffic density of vehicles leaving Bali, this condition can still be resolved. Police officers on duty from Tuesday at a number of monitoring posts scattered in Gilimanuk to arrange the traffic. As seen on Tuesday morning, the traffic, especially
motorcycles and private cars, has started booming. This amount is estimated to have not reached half of the total amount of vehicles that will be leaving Bali. By noon, the queue began to recede. Pursuant to the data collected at the ASDP Gilimanuk, the number of vehicles leaving Bali has began to increase since Sunday night. On Monday morning to Tuesday morning, there were 33 crossing ships in operation. During the day, the number of passengers reaches 41,425 people or a decrease of 8 percent from 44,959 people last year; 9,028 motorcycles or a decrease of 8 percent from last year reaching 9,786 units; and 5,083 cars or an increase of 9 percent from last year reaching 4,661 units. In the meantime, the total passengers from the tenth to sixth days before holiday or during four days reached 152,433 people or an increase of 2 percent from last year reaching 150,089 people, motorcycle reached 27,134 units or a decrease of 3 percent from last year reaching 27,988 units; and car reached 22,463 units or an increase of 10 percent from last year reaching 20,471 units. Chief of Jembrana Police Traffic Affairs, Nyoman Sukadana, when asked for his confirmation last Tuesday justified such condition. Vehicle traffic leaving Bali has showed an increase since Monday night but not to cause a long queue. All the officers involved in the security began to stand by at a number of predetermined points including along the road section to Gilimanuk Harbor. (kmb26)

DENPASAR - Warden of Kerobokan Prison assisted by police officers, both from Bali Police and Badung Police, are still hunting the four foreign inmates alleged to have escaped through the tunnel. But, it sounds interesting and becomes a question of many parties, can foreigners escape overseas or return to their country of origin? As the rules having been applied so far, those who will travel or come to other countries are certainly using a passport. However, since the four escaping inmates, Shaud Edward Davidson, 33, from Australia; Dimitar Nikolon Iliev alias Kermi, 43, from Bulgaria; Sayed Mohammed Said, from India; and Tee Kok King, from Malaysia are involved in criminal cases so their passport was confiscated. However, the problem is that after the trial with the agenda of reading the verdict in 2016, in accordance with the verdict of the panel of judges, their passport has been submitted to the respective convicted. Section Head of General Crimes at the Denpasar Prosecutor’s Office, I Ketut Maha Agung, said on Tuesday (Jun. 20) that the four passports have been returned to the concerned people. The passports are not entrusted at prison office. “According to decision of the panel of judges, we pass the passport to the concerned (convicted). Our affairs are finished until the execution,” explained Maha Agung. In the meantime, other information received from the court office, specifically related to the convicted Shaud Edward Davidson, getting involved in immigration cases, namely data forgery, he often chats in Facebook. Moreover, according to the source, Shaud asked his friend whether after being released he will be accompanied by an officer in his deportation or simply handed over to the authorities.
Shaud is an Australian tourist who was charged with Article 130 of the Law No. 6/2011 on immigration. The judges convicted Shaud in September 2016 with a one-year imprisonment and a fine of IDR 100 million and a five-month subsidiary punishment. The prosecutor’s office executed him in October 2016. The other three inmates are Dimitar Nikolon Iliev aka Kermi, 43, from Bulgaria. He was charged under Article 363 of the Criminal Code with a criminal penalty for 7 years, a fine of IDR 100 million and a four-month subsidiary punishment. He was found guilty in cases of electronic data theft, namely the theft of ATM data and money laundering. He was also executed in 2016. The third inmate is Sayed Mohammed Said from India. He was charged with a drug case. By Prosecutor Edy Arta Eijaya, he was charged under Article 113 paragraph 2 of Law No. 35/2009 on Narcotics. By the panel of judges, Sayed was sentenced to 14 years and a fine of IDR 1 billion and a three-month subsidiary punishment. He was convicted on March 28, 2016 and executed on April 5, 2016. The fourth inmate is Tee Kok King, a citizen of Malaysia. He was also charged under drug cases and violated Article 113 paragraph 2 of Law No. 35/2009. By the judges, he was sentenced to 7 years and 6 months in prison, a fine of IDR 1.5 billion and a threemonth subsidiary punishment. He was convicted on September 15, 2016 and executed on November 10, 2016. In the meantime, police authority, namely Badung police and Bali police mobile brigade had time to check the tunnel. However, due to unfavorable conditions, namely the land is in unstable conditions, the examination was cancelled. (kmb37)

Combo of sleep apnea and insomnia linked to depression in men
ADELAIDE - Men with both obstructive sleep apnea and insomnia are much more likely to have depression symptoms compared to men with either sleep disorder alone, suggests a recent Australian study. The depression symptoms also seem to be worse for men who have both apnea and insomnia compared to men with depression but without this combination of sleep problems, the authors report in the journal Respirology. “Obstructive sleep apnea and insomnia are the two most common sleep disorders and can occur together in the same individual,” lead author Dr. Carol Lang, a researcher at the Basil Hetzel Institute at the University of Adelaide Queen Elizabeth Hospital Campus, told Reuters Health. “We know that each of these disorders is individually associated with poor physical and mental health outcomes in patients. However, we don’t know very much about if, or how, the two disorders interact with each other and the health outcomes when they coexist in the same individual,” Lang said in an email. A person with obstructive sleep apnea has their breathing interrupted multiple times during sleep by narrowed or blocked airways. The condition is often treated by wearing a continuous positive airway pressure, or CPAP, mask to keep the airway open.
Insomnia was defined in this study as the inability to fall or stay asleep together with feeling fatigued during the day. Lang and her colleagues enrolled 700 mostly middle aged men in Adelaide with no diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea. All of them underwent at-home sleep monitoring known as polysomnography and answered questions about their sleep habits, health conditions and possible depression symptoms. Researchers found that more than half of the men had undiagnosed obstructive sleep apnea. In the entire group, 323 men had sleep apnea only, 37 had insomnia only and 47 had both conditions. Of the men with both sleep apnea and insomnia, 43 percent also had depression, compared with 22 percent of the men who had insomnia alone and 8 percent of the men who had sleep apnea alone. Sleep deprivation, which may occur in chronic insomnia, is known to adversely affect muscles involved in breathing and may contribute to the propensity and severity of sleep apnea, Lang noted. “There are also many biochemical signaling pathways in the body through which sleep apnea, insomnia, and depression may interact with each other,” she said. If one of the sleep disorders is suspected, primary care providers should consider the possibility of coexisting sleep apnea and insomnia as well as their patient’s mental health, said Lang. (rtr)

WASHINGTON - Children and teens should be screened for obesity at doctors’ offices starting at age 6 and advised to attend intensive weight management programs if needed, according to a U.S.government backed panel. The recommendation, from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), reinforces the panel’s previous guidelines, according to its chairperson. “Overall, (the) prevalence of obesity has leveled off, but we do see increasing rates in some populations,” said Dr. David Grossman, of the Kaiser Permanente Washington Research Institute in Seattle. “We have not solved this problem and we must continue to work on this.” The obesity rate among U.S. children in general is stable at about 17 percent but is still increasing among African American girls and Hispanic boys, the USPSTF writes in JAMA. Children are considered obese if their body mass index (BMI), which is a measure of weight in relation to height, falls at or above the 95th percentile on the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s growth charts - which would mean the child’s BMI is higher than 95 percent of other kids of the same age and sex, according to the agency. Referring children and their families to comprehensive and intensive weight management
programs, with 26 hours or more of contact with specialists over two to 12 months, resulted in weight loss, USPSTF researchers found. Those contacts could include group therapy or individual sessions, education and goal setting. “The amount of time these interventions consumed matters,” said Grossman. “Intensive usually means a minimum of 26 hours is required to see any effect of the intervention.” The USPSTF also looked at the use of medications like metformin and orlistat among obese children for weight loss, but evidence was scarce and the panel could not make any recommendations. Despite the lack of evidence on use of medications for treating obesity in children, new research since the USPSTF’s last recommendation in 2005 has made the new version stronger, Grossman said. AMLAPURA - Karangasem Police -through their ‘anti-illegal levy’ task-force, led by A.A. Gede Mudita, is now intensifying their monitoring of tourist attractions. Supervision is being enhanced following allegations of rampant levying of illegal charges by certain parties. A.A. Mudita who is also Deputy Chief of Karangasem Police admitted that lately there had been numerous reports of illegal levies at certain tourist attractions. “We are still investigating these allegations. Charging tourists illegal levies is very disturbing and can be quite damaging to the image of tourism in Karangasem”, he said. Mudita acknowledged that people’s complaints had been publicized through social media causing quite a stir. This officer was reluctant to explain in details about the information that is now being investigated by the team that he leads. Obviously, he said this information will be followed up on. He also pointed out that levies being charged by customary villages
but that are not based on on perarem (customary law) also qualify as illegal. The collection of quarrying levies on roadsides can also be classified at illegal if they are not in compliance with customary laws. The Karanasem Police’s anti-illegal levy task-force will definitely take a firm stance against such practices. “Without a prarem, it’s categorized as illegal levies” he said. Mudita however added that levies that have been agreed upon in perarem are perfectly legitimate. The Karagasem Police’s repsonse to information about illegal levies said Mudita includes conducting investigations on the ground and finding out if such levies are being collected according to perarem or not. If there is a clear rule and the money is being officially submitted to customary treasuries then such actions are legal. “It is a different case if the money being collected is intended for individual interests. Bumbung gebyog chants, music to call the spirit DENPASAR - A boat-shaped wooden mortar (ketungan) is commonly beaten with a bamboo stick at midnight the day before a ngaben (cremation) procession. This is done as part of a ritual for calling the spirit of the departed one. The soul is expected to wake up and come to the ritual where the body is told that it will be cremated. This tradition was expressed through the Bumbung Gebyog musical performance staged by Bangli’s Asta Musti art studio on the Ayodya Stage, of the Denpasar Art Center, on Monday (Jun. 19). Composer of the gamelan music, Dewa Nyoman Candra, said that Bumbung Gebyog is used to an accompaniment instrument in Nyiwa Resi level cremation ceremonies. Beyond this level, Bumbung Gebyog is generally not used. “In Bangli, we use angklung, but the procession may be different than in other regions”, he said. “In my area in Bangli, for example, on the night before the cremation procession we performed this kind a ceremony”, said the man from Tambahan village, Tembuku, Bangli. According to Candra, Bumbung Gebyog had not been played in his village for a long time. As a young artist he considers it necessary to rerevive this art form and it finally got a chance to appear at the Bali Arts Festival 2017. “I want to show this off at the BAF so that people know this kind of music still exists. As the younger generation let us preserve this culture so that it does not dissapear in the
future. In my area, a lot of people are becoming interested in playing” he said. Candra explained that it took him about four months to prepare for teh BAF appearance. He had to repair some of the instruments as only the wooden mortar was intact while other supporting instruments had been somewhat damaged. Cutting the wood for the instruments could only be done on an auspicious day before the instruments could be made. There were then several rehearsals before the performance. “The wood I used was carefully selected based on related literature. There is wood that is categorized as prabu (king) and patih (prime minister). For this project, I use ficus wood that is considered to be of very good quality”, he added. During the 30-minute performance at the BAF, the troupe presented three gamelan music compositions. Two of which were conemporary compostions. They started with the ngentenin (waking up), followed by the atiwa-tiwa composition and then played the nuduk galih composition. The atiwa-tiwa composition was inspired by the atiwa-tiwa or cremation ceremony that serves to purify the spirit with its physical body. In Balinese nuduk galih means ‘to collect bones.’ The atmosphere changed to a magically nuanced one, describing the community togetherness in the process of collecting the debris of burned ashes that are then sent off into the river or into the sea. BAF craft merchandise insured DENPASAR — Handicraft sales at the Bali Arts Festival 2016 were down 19.6 percent from IDR 11 billion to 8.9 billion from the year before due to a fire that ravaged the handy-craft stalls. No students were taken hostage at the school in Pigcawayan town in North Cotabato province on Mindanao island, said Brigadier General Restituto Padilla, discounting earlier reports that some children were being held. However, he said the military was investigating whether around five civilians were still with the militants. “It’s already resolved,” Padilla told a regular briefing. “They’ve withdrawn, they are no longer there. able to push through badly needed economic reforms through congress, needed to spark Brazil’s economy just as it emerges from its worst recession on record. Temer has repeatedly said he is innocent of all accusations against him. Antonio Oliveira, a lawyer for Temer, told Reuters in a written statement on Tuesday that he had no comment about the police report. Temer is currently on a foreign tour. The press office at JBS did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Under Brazilian law, the investigation into Temer is overseen by a single top court justice, Edson Fachin, who last month approved the graft probe into the leader. The allegations are based on plea-bargain testimony from JBS executives, who say they paid Temer at least $4.6 million in bribes since at least 2010 to help win lucrative government contracts, resolve massive tax disputes with the government and free cheap loans from the state development bank. JBS executives say that they paid about $154 million to nearly 1,900 politicians in the past decade, as the company rapidly grew from a small meat producer to the top global position it now holds. Once police conclude and deliver the entirety of their report into allegations against Temer to Fachin, the top federal prosecutor, Rodrigo Janot, can then lodge formal charges against the president. The partial report was delivered on Tuesday, because it was the original deadline that Fachin gave investigators, but police now have five more days to continue their work.
Janot is expected to level charges against Temer by the end of next week, according to several sources with direct knowledge of the probe. But Brazil’s constitution mandates that any criminal charges against a sitting president must be approved by two-thirds of the lower house of congress. Only then can the Supreme Court try a leader. Several lawmakers within Temer’s governing coalition have told Reuters in recent days they are confident they can block any charges that may be filed against the president. But they also acknowledge that the leader would be politically weakened if he is officially charged with corruption, adding to instability. Aides and lawmakers close to Temer have also told Reuters that if more evidence of corruption emerges against the leader, it would make it increasingly difficult for him to maintain his unwieldy government coalition. That would hike pressure on him to resign. The investigation against Temer is separate from the multitude of probes prosecutors have launched in the last three years. Most center on large firms paying billions of dollars in bribes to politicians and executives at state-run firms in exchange for winning massive contracts. Temer, four former living presidents, and dozens of congressmen are under investigation or, in the case of former leader Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, on trial in connection to graft probes. (rtr)

Bank of England’s Carney stifles UK rate hike talk
LONDON - Bank of England Governor Mark Carney doused speculation that he might soon back higher interest rates, telling bankers on Tuesday that he first wanted to see how the economy coped with Brexit talks in coming months. Sterling slid by more than half a cent after Carney distanced himself from three other BoE rate-setters who said last week that rates should start to rise for the first time in a decade. “Now is not yet the time to begin that adjustment,” he said in an annual speech at London’s Mansion House. The BoE has found itself in an awkward position. Inflation is rising quickly after falls in the value of sterling since last summer’s Brexit vote, while signs of weakness in the economy are increasing, including a slowing of pay growth. The economy has also been hurt by uncertainty about the Brexit negotiations, which started on Monday, and a murky political outlook further clouded by elections on June 8 in which Prime Minister Theresa May lost her parliamentary majority. Finance minister Philip Hammond, who has sought to soften May’s at times confrontational tone towards the bloc, told the same Mansion House audience that
Britain faced a challenge to secure appropriate transitional trade arrangements with the EU before it left the bloc in 2019. Carney sounded a similar note of caution, saying that if there was insufficient progress on creating a Brexit transition period, businesses might start to activate their own contingency plans. economies in early 2017, and some of the other costs of the Brexit vote are now materialising, placing the BoE in a dilemma. Sterling’s post-referendum fall of more than 10 percent is feeding through into inflation, which has hit its highest in nearly four years at 2.9 percent and is squeezing consumer spending. The currency’s further fall since the election looks set to push inflation above 3 percent, the BoE said last week. For three policymakers that justified undoing last year’s rate cut, but Carney made clear he was in no rush to join them. “In the coming months, I would like to see the extent to which weaker consumption growth is offset by other components of demand, whether wages begin to firm, and more generally, how the economy reacts to ... the reality of Brexit negotiations.” Economists said Carney appeared further from raising rates than other officials who voted last week to keep rates steady. “The Governor outlines his per-
sonal perspective which appears to imply the decision for him to hold policy steady was not (finely) balanced, in contrast with some of his colleagues,” Investec economist Victoria Clarke wrote. In a sign of concerns that could hold back investment, car maker Honda said its supply chain would seize up if Britain left the EU without a customs deal. Hammond - who has paid more heed to business worries about Brexit than most of his Conservative colleagues - has said Britain will withdraw from the EU’s customs union as part of Brexit but hopes a separate deal will avoid long border delays. “Our departure from the EU is under way. But ensuring that it happens via a smooth pathway ... one that protects jobs, prosperity, and living standards in Britain will require every ounce of skill and diplomacy,” he said on Tuesday. If one is introduced to archery early, mental stregth is honed and leads to great acheivements. “Unfortunately, traditional archery has been removed from the national games (PON). Actually it is a national cultural treasures that should be preserved, but instead it has been eliminated”, said this gold medalist of the PON XI. Archery has much to teach youngsters in terms of selfdiscipline, he said. “Traditional archery contests are part of efforts to preserve our cultural assets. There used to be a national archery league that competed in the national games. Belgium probes station bomber fatally shot by soldiers
BRUSSELS - Belgian counter-terrorism police are probing the identity of a suspected suicide bomber shot dead by troops guarding a Brussels railway station after he set off explosives that failed to injure anyone.
“We consider this a terrorist attack,” prosecutor Eric Van Der Sypt told reporters, declining comment on witness accounts that the man had shouted Islamist slogans before detonating what witnesses said were one or two devices in luggage. Although no one was hurt, billows of smoke pouring through Central Station and a shared awareness of Islamic State attacks in the city last year and more recently in Britain, France and elsewhere, sent evening commuters racing for cover. Police halted rail traffic, evacuated the site and cleared streets crowded with tourists and locals enjoying a hot summer’s evening in the historic city centre between the station and nearby Grand Place, Brussels’ landmark Renaissance town square. The Belgian capital, home to the headquarters of NATO and the European Union, has been on high alert since a Brussels-based Islamic State cell organised the attack that killed 130 people in Paris in November 2015. Four months later, associates of those attackers killed 32 people in their home city. Since then, attacks in France, but also in Germany, Sweden and, most recently, in Britain, have been carried out in the name of the Syria-based Islamist militant group by other young men, many of them locals,

Confusion over plane crash claims as Portugal struggles to put out deadly fire AVELAR - Portugal carried out a massive operation to combat its deadliest forest fire on record, which has killed 64 people, amid confusion about the fate of a firefighting plane which had earlier been reported to have crashed on Tuesday. The disaster, now into its fourth day, also prompted Prime Minister Antonio Costa to question the emergency response system. Victor Vaz Pinto, commander of the civil protection agency, said a helicopter had been sent out to search for the aircraft but had found nothing. “I have no information that any airplane working for civil protection has crashed,” said Vaz Pinto, adding that an explosion heard by many in the vicinity may have been caused by abandoned gas bottles. Local media had earlier reported a Canadair plane had crashed. A Reuters photographer in the area said he saw a plane fly out of view and shortly afterwards he heard an explosion. The fire, about 200 km (125 miles) northeast of capital Lisbon, spread rapidly after starting on Saturday, killing many people in their cars as they tried to flee the blaze. Costa called the fire the biggest human tragedy in Portugal in living memory. Several other fires have now spread through the region and there are now more than 2,000 firefighters involved in the efforts, said

JAKARTA - Vice President Jusuf Kalla said that the full-day school policy was yet to be annulled, but it would be reviewed further before being implemented. “All measures that would affect millions of people should be evaluated thoroughly, as this would affect 50 million students,” Kalla said, after breaking fast with President Joko Widodo and the police personnel at the Police Academy stadium here, on Tuesday. Kalla reiterated that the program would not be canceled, but it would be evaluated to seek the best solution for its implementation. It would need preparation not only for the students but also for the teachers, families, schools, and the society. “After that, of course, (schools) which are ready could implement this and those which are yet to be ready would evaluate this further,” the vice president remarked. He admitted that the five-day school plan was a good concept, but it should be adjusted with the
current condition of schools. “The point is that we will evaluate this. Let us monitor the result of the evaluation, whether there will be some changes or not,” Kalla added. Education and Culture Minister Muhadjir Effendy on June 9 has issued a ministerial regulation (Permen) on five-day school weeks that would take effect in July. The policy requires schools to adopt full-day school or eight hours a day. He explained that the government wanted to implement the same working hours for teachers similar to that of other civil servants. Muhadjir remarked that the fullday school plan will not disrupt student activities outside school. However, the new regulation has raised controversy among the public. Champion Murray falls in opening round as top three seeds exit
LONDON - The top three seeds withered in the baking Queen’s Club sunshine with five-times Aegon Championships winner Andy Murray following Stan Wawrinka and Milos Raonic through the exit door on Tuesday. By far the biggest shock was number one seed Murray’s abject 7-6(4) 6-2 defeat to Australian world number 90 Jordan Thompson -- a late call-up who only knew he was playing shortly before stepping on court against the defending champion. MADRID - Spanish prosecutors said on Tuesday they had filed a claim against Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho on two counts of tax fraud dating back to when he coached Real Madrid. The Portuguese manager owes Spanish tax authorities 3.3 million euros ($3.7 million), a Madrid prosecutor said in a statement, adding it had presented a claim to a local court. Mourinho left Real Madrid in 2013 to manage English club Chelsea for a second spell before signing with United in 2016.
Prosecutors said he had failed to declare revenues from his image rights in his Spanish income tax declarations from 2011 and 2012, “with the aim of obtaining illicit profits”. They said Mourinho had already settled a previous claim relating to his Spanish taxes after a 2014 inquiry, which resulted in a penalty of 1.15 million euros. But tax authorities later found that some of the information presented in that settlement was incorrect, the prosecutors said. Mourinho’s agents at Portugal-based Gestifute said in a statement that the coach had not received any notification relating to the allegations from tax authorities or prosecutors. They added that Mourinho had already
dealt with questions raised by tax authorities in 2015, settling issues with his 2011 and 2012 filings and reaching a settlement regarding 2013. “The Spanish government ... through the tax department, issued a certificate in which it attested that he had regularised his position and was in compliance with all his tax obligations,” Gestifute said. Known as “the Special One”, Mourinho, 54, is one of the most prominent and successful coaches in soccer today. In the season just ended, he won three trophies in his debut campaign at Manchester United, although he drew criticism after a poor league performance in which United finished sixth in the Premier League. In European competition, he has led Porto to UEFA Cup victory in 2003 and a Champions League triumph in 2004, and also won the Champions League with Inter Milan in 2010. He has claimed a haul of domestic trophies with Chelsea and other clubs. The claims against Mourinho come amid a lengthening list of tax fraud cases involving soccer stars in Spain. Real Madrid player Cristiano Ronaldo has been called to testify on July 31 in Madrid on allegations that he hid income from tax authorities between 2011 and 2014, the court said on Tuesday. PETERSBURG — Late buses and busy roads are messing up Cameroon’s pre-match plans in Russia. “The traffic in Moscow is a disaster,” Cameroon coach Hugo Broos told The Associated Press on Wednesday after a news conference in St. Petersburg which was also delayed by transport issues at the Confederations Cup. The mandatory session with international media started 30 minutes late at the stadium where Cameroon plays Australia on Thursday. A team dinner also began late at 10 p.m. Tuesday after its official bus to training did not arrive on time at the hotel, then got stuck in traffic. That disruption was “really unpleasant,” said Broos, adding he was “extremely annoyed once again” with transport at the rehearsal tournament for the 2018 World Cup. “I think that the organizing team must maybe review the way teams are transferred from the hotels to the stadium,” said the Belgian coach, who led Cameroon to an unexpected Africa Cup of Nations title in February. PETERSBURG — Late buses and busy roads are messing up Cameroon’s pre-match plans in Russia. “The traffic in Moscow is a disaster,” Cameroon coach Hugo Broos told The Associated Press on Wednesday after a news conference in St. Petersburg which was also delayed by transport issues at the Confederations Cup. The mandatory session with international media started 30 minutes late at the stadium where Cameroon plays Australia on Thursday. A team dinner also began late at 10 p.m. Tuesday after its official bus to training did not arrive on time at the hotel, then got stuck in traffic. Champion Murray falls in opening round as top three seeds exit
LONDON - The top three seeds withered in the baking Queen’s Club sunshine with five-times Aegon Championships winner Andy Murray following Stan Wawrinka and Milos Raonic through the exit door on Tuesday. By far the biggest shock was number one seed Murray’s abject 7-6(4) 6-2 defeat to Australian world number 90 Jordan Thompson -- a late call-up who only knew he was playing shortly before stepping on court against the defending champion. Second seed and world number three Wawrinka, runner-up at the French Open nine days ago, went down 7-6(4) 7-5 to Spain’s Feliciano Lopez while another young Australian, wildcard Thanasi Kokkinakis, accounted for Raonic 7-6(5) 7-6(8). Belgium probes station bomber fatally shot by soldiers
BRUSSELS - Belgian counter-terrorism police are probing the identity of a suspected suicide bomber shot dead by troops guarding a Brussels railway station after he set off explosives that failed to injure anyone.
“We consider this a terrorist attack,” prosecutor Eric Van Der Sypt told reporters, declining comment on witness accounts that the man had shouted Islamist slogans before detonating what witnesses said were one or two devices in luggage. Although no one was hurt, billows of smoke pouring through Central Station and a shared awareness of Islamic State attacks in the city last year and more recently in Britain, France and elsewhere, sent evening commuters racing for cover. Police halted rail traffic, evacuated the site and cleared streets crowded with tourists and locals enjoying a hot summer’s evening in the historic city centre between the station and nearby Grand Place, Brussels’ landmark Renaissance town square. The Belgian capital, home to the headquarters of NATO and the European Union, has been on high alert since a Brussels-based Islamic State cell organised the attack that killed 130 people in Paris in November 2015. Four months later, associates of those attackers killed 32 people in their home city. Security experts said Tuesday’s incident could have been similar to “lone-wolf” assaults carried out by radicalised individuals with limited access to weapons and training. “Such isolated acts will continue in Brussels, in Paris and elsewhere. It’s inevitable,” Brussels security consultant Claude Moniquet, a former French agent, told broadcaster RTL. With Islamic State under pressure in Syria - where Belgium has been the most fertile European recruiting ground for foreign Islamist fighters - he said attacks in Europe could increase, although many would be by “amateurs” doing little harm. He compared Tuesday’s incident to that on Paris’ Champs-Elysees avenue a day earlier, when a man was killed when he rammed his car, filled with explosive and weapons, into a French police convoy. Confusion over plane crash claims as Portugal struggles to put out deadly fire AVELAR - Portugal carried out a massive operation to combat its deadliest forest fire on record, which has killed 64 people, amid confusion about the fate of a firefighting plane which had earlier been reported to have crashed on Tuesday. The disaster, now into its fourth day, also prompted Prime Minister Antonio Costa to question the emergency response system. Victor Vaz Pinto, commander of the civil protection agency, said a helicopter had been sent out to search for the aircraft but had found nothing. “I have no information that any airplane working for civil protection has crashed,” said Vaz Pinto, adding that an explosion heard by many in the vicinity may have been caused by abandoned gas bottles. Local media had earlier reported a Canadair plane had crashed. A Reuters photographer in the area said he saw a plane fly out of view and shortly afterwards he heard an explosion. The fire, about 200 km (125 miles) northeast of capital Lisbon, spread rapidly after starting on Saturday, killing many people in their cars as they tried to flee the blaze. Costa called the fire the biggest human tragedy in Portugal in living memory. Several other fires have now spread through the region and there are now more than 2,000 firefighters involved in the efforts, said

JAKARTA - Vice President Jusuf Kalla said that the full-day school policy was yet to be annulled, but it would be reviewed further before being implemented. “All measures that would affect millions of people should be evaluated thoroughly, as this would affect 50 million students,” Kalla said, after breaking fast with President Joko Widodo and the police personnel at the Police Academy stadium here, on Tuesday. Kalla reiterated that the program would not be canceled, but it would be evaluated to seek the best solution for its implementation. It would need preparation not only for the students but also for the teachers, families, schools, and the society. “After that, of course, (schools) which are ready could implement this and those which are yet to be ready would evaluate this further,” the vice president remarked. He admitted that the five-day school plan was a good concept, but it should be adjusted with the
current condition of schools. “The point is that we will evaluate this. Let us monitor the result of the evaluation, whether there will be some changes or not,” Kalla added. Education and Culture Minister Muhadjir Effendy on June 9 has issued a ministerial regulation (Permen) on five-day school weeks that would take effect in July. The policy requires schools to adopt full-day school or eight hours a day. He explained that the government wanted to implement the same working hours for teachers similar to that of other civil servants. Muhadjir remarked that the fullday school plan will not disrupt student activities outside school. However, the new regulation has raised controversy among the public. Bank of England’s Carney stifles UK rate hike talk
LONDON - Bank of England Governor Mark Carney doused speculation that he might soon back higher interest rates, telling bankers on Tuesday that he first wanted to see how the economy coped with Brexit talks in coming months. Sterling slid by more than half a cent after Carney distanced himself from three other BoE rate-setters who said last week that rates should start to rise for the first time in a decade. “Now is not yet the time to begin that adjustment,” he said in an annual speech at London’s Mansion House. The BoE has found itself in an awkward position. Inflation is rising quickly after falls in the value of sterling since last summer’s Brexit vote, while signs of weakness in the economy are increasing, including a slowing of pay growth. The economy has also been hurt by uncertainty about the Brexit negotiations, which started on Monday, and a murky political outlook further clouded by elections on June 8 in which Prime Minister Theresa May lost her parliamentary majority. Finance minister Philip Hammond, who has sought to soften May’s at times confrontational tone towards the bloc, told the same Mansion House audience that

able to push through badly needed economic reforms through congress, needed to spark Brazil’s economy just as it emerges from its worst recession on record. Temer has repeatedly said he is innocent of all accusations against him. Antonio Oliveira, a lawyer for Temer, told Reuters in a written statement on Tuesday that he had no comment about the police report. Temer is currently on a foreign tour. The press office at JBS did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Under Brazilian law, the investigation into Temer is overseen by a single top court justice, Edson Fachin, who last month approved the graft probe into the leader. The allegations are based on plea-bargain testimony from JBS executives, who say they paid Temer at least $4.6 million in bribes since at least 2010 to help win lucrative government contracts, resolve massive tax disputes with the government and free cheap loans from the state development bank. JBS executives say that they paid about $154 million to nearly 1,900 politicians in the past decade, as the company rapidly grew from a small meat producer to the top global position it now holds. Once police conclude and deliver the entirety of their report into allegations against Temer to Fachin, the top federal prosecutor, Rodrigo Janot, can then lodge formal charges against the president. The partial report was delivered on Tuesday, because it was the original deadline that Fachin gave investigators, but police now have five more days to continue their work.
Janot is expected to level charges against Temer by the end of next week, according to several sources with direct knowledge of the probe. But Brazil’s constitution mandates that any criminal charges against a sitting president must be approved by two-thirds of the lower house of congress. Only then can the Supreme Court try a leader. Several lawmakers within Temer’s governing coalition have told Reuters in recent days they are confident they can block any charges that may be filed against the president. But they also acknowledge that the leader would be politically weakened if he is officially charged with corruption, adding to instability. Aides and lawmakers close to Temer have also told Reuters that if more evidence of corruption emerges against the leader, it would make it increasingly difficult for him to maintain his unwieldy government coalition. That would hike pressure on him to resign. The investigation against Temer is separate from the multitude of probes prosecutors have launched in the last three years. Most center on large firms paying billions of dollars in bribes to politicians and executives at state-run firms in exchange for winning massive contracts. Combo of sleep apnea and insomnia linked to depression in men
ADELAIDE - Men with both obstructive sleep apnea and insomnia are much more likely to have depression symptoms compared to men with either sleep disorder alone, suggests a recent Australian study. The depression symptoms also seem to be worse for men who have both apnea and insomnia compared to men with depression but without this combination of sleep problems, the authors report in the journal Respirology. “Obstructive sleep apnea and insomnia are the two most common sleep disorders and can occur together in the same individual,” lead author Dr. Carol Lang, a researcher at the Basil Hetzel Institute at the University of Adelaide Queen Elizabeth Hospital Campus, told Reuters Health. “We know that each of these disorders is individually associated with poor physical and mental health outcomes in patients. However, we don’t know very much about if, or how, the two disorders interact with each other and the health outcomes when they coexist in the same individual,” Lang said in an email. A person with obstructive sleep apnea has their breathing interrupted multiple times during sleep by narrowed or blocked airways. The condition is often treated by wearing a continuous positive airway pressure, or CPAP, mask to keep the airway open.
Insomnia was defined in this study as the inability to fall or stay asleep together with feeling fatigued during the day. Lang and her colleagues enrolled 700 mostly middle aged men in Adelaide with no diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea. All of them underwent at-home sleep monitoring known as polysomnography and answered questions about their sleep habits, health conditions and possible depression symptoms. Researchers found that more than half of the men had undiagnosed obstructive sleep apnea. In the entire group, 323 men had sleep apnea only, 37 had insomnia only and 47 had both conditions. Of the men with both sleep apnea and insomnia, 43 percent also had depression, compared with 22 percent of the men who had insomnia alone and 8 percent of the men who had sleep apnea alone. Sleep deprivation, which may occur in chronic insomnia, is known to adversely affect muscles involved in breathing and may contribute to the propensity and severity of sleep apnea, Lang noted. “There are also many biochemical signaling pathways in the body through which sleep apnea, insomnia, and depression may interact with each other,” she said. If one of the sleep disorders is suspected, primary care providers should consider the possibility of coexisting sleep apnea and insomnia as well as their patient’s mental health, said Lang. (rtr)

WASHINGTON - Children and teens should be screened for obesity at doctors’ offices starting at age 6 and advised to attend intensive weight management programs if needed, according to a U.S.government backed panel. The recommendation, from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), reinforces the panel’s previous guidelines, according to its chairperson. “Overall, (the) prevalence of obesity has leveled off, but we do see increasing rates in some populations,” said Dr. David Grossman, of the Kaiser Permanente Washington Research Institute in Seattle. “We have not solved this problem and we must continue to work on this.” The obesity rate among U.S. children in general is stable at about 17 percent but is still increasing among African American girls and Hispanic boys, the USPSTF writes in JAMA. Children are considered obese if their body mass index (BMI), which is a measure of weight in relation to height, falls at or above the 95th percentile on the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s growth charts - which would mean the child’s BMI is higher than 95 percent of other kids of the same age and sex, according to the agency. Referring children and their families to comprehensive and intensive weight management
programs, with 26 hours or more of contact with specialists over two to 12 months, resulted in weight loss, USPSTF researchers found. Those contacts could include group therapy or individual sessions, education and goal setting. “The amount of time these interventions consumed matters,” said Grossman. “Intensive usually means a minimum of 26 hours is required to see any effect of the intervention.” The USPSTF also looked at the use of medications like metformin and orlistat among obese children for weight loss, but evidence was scarce and the panel could not make any recommendations. Despite the lack of evidence on use of medications for treating obesity in children, new research since the USPSTF’s last recommendation in 2005 has made the new version stronger, Grossman said. Dr. Stephen Cook, of the University of Rochester Medical Center in New York, said doctors can screen children and teens for obesity but families may not have access to the needed treatments since insurers may not pay for those programs. “It really is sort of a form of weight bias in the sense that the system is ignoring this,” said Cook, who was not involved with the new USPSTF recommendation but is the Obesity Society’s ambassador to the American Academy of Pediatrics. Supervision is being enhanced following allegations of rampant levying of illegal charges by certain parties. A.A. Mudita who is also Deputy Chief of Karangasem Police admitted that lately there had been numerous reports of illegal levies at certain tourist attractions. “We are still investigating these allegations. Charging tourists illegal levies is very disturbing and can be quite damaging to the image of tourism in Karangasem”, he said. Mudita acknowledged that people’s complaints had been publicized through social media causing quite a stir. This officer was reluctant to explain in details about the information that is now being investigated by the team that he leads. Obviously, he said this information will be followed up on. He also pointed out that levies being charged by customary villages
but that are not based on on perarem (customary law) also qualify as illegal. The collection of quarrying levies on roadsides can also be classified at illegal if they are not in compliance with customary laws. The Karanasem Police’s anti-illegal levy task-force will definitely take a firm stance against such practices. “Without a prarem, it’s categorized as illegal levies” he said. Mudita however added that levies that have been agreed upon in perarem are perfectly legitimate. The Karagasem Police’s repsonse to information about illegal levies said Mudita includes conducting investigations on the ground and finding out if such levies are being collected according to perarem or not. If there is a clear rule and the money is being officially submitted to customary treasuries then such actions are legal. “It is a different case if the money being collected is intended for individual interests. If illegal actions are proven, applicable laws will be enforced” he said. (kmb)
Bumbung gebyog chants, music to call the spirit DENPASAR - A boat-shaped wooden mortar (ketungan) is commonly beaten with a bamboo stick at midnight the day before a ngaben (cremation) procession. This is done as part of a ritual for calling the spirit of the departed one. The soul is expected to wake up and come to the ritual where the body is told that it will be cremated. This tradition was expressed through the Bumbung Gebyog musical performance staged by Bangli’s Asta Musti art studio on the Ayodya Stage, of the Denpasar Art Center, on Monday (Jun. 19). Composer of the gamelan music, Dewa Nyoman Candra, said that Bumbung Gebyog is used to an accompaniment instrument in Nyiwa Resi level cremation ceremonies. Beyond this level, Bumbung Gebyog is generally not used. “In Bangli, we use angklung, but the procession may be different than in other regions”, he said. “In my area in Bangli, for example, on the night before the cremation procession we performed this kind a ceremony”, said the man from Tambahan village, Tembuku, Bangli. According to Candra, Bumbung Gebyog had not been played in his village for a long time. As a young artist he considers it necessary to rerevive this art form and it finally got a chance to appear at the Bali Arts Festival 2017. “I want to show this off at the BAF so that people know this kind of music still exists. As the younger generation let us preserve this culture so that it does not dissapear in the
future. In my area, a lot of people are becoming interested in playing” he said. Candra explained that it took him about four months to prepare for teh BAF appearance. He had to repair some of the instruments as only the wooden mortar was intact while other supporting instruments had been somewhat damaged. Cutting the wood for the instruments could only be done on an auspicious day before the instruments could be made. There were then several rehearsals before the performance. “The wood I used was carefully selected based on related literature. There is wood that is categorized as prabu (king) and patih (prime minister). For this project, I use ficus wood that is considered to be of very good quality”, he added. During the 30-minute performance at the BAF, the troupe presented three gamelan music compositions. Two of which were conemporary compostions. They started with the ngentenin (waking up), followed by the atiwa-tiwa composition and then played the nuduk galih composition. The atiwa-tiwa composition was inspired by the atiwa-tiwa or cremation ceremony that serves to purify the spirit with its physical body. In Balinese nuduk galih means ‘to collect bones.’ The atmosphere changed to a magically nuanced one, describing the community togetherness in the process of collecting the debris of burned ashes that are then sent off into the river or into the sea. BAF craft merchandise insured DENPASAR — Handicraft sales at the Bali Arts Festival 2016 were down 19.6 percent from IDR 11 billion to 8.9 billion from the year before due to a fire that ravaged the handy-craft stalls. Based on this unfortunate experience, all of the merchandise being sold at the BAF 2017 has been insured. A total of 206 craftsmen bought insurance from Jasa Raharja Putera with diverse premiums. For a premium of IDR 46,000, claim can be paid up to IDR 100 million, while with the premium of IDR 92,000, the claim will be paid up to IDR 200 million. This was conveyed by the Head of the Bali Industry and Com-
merce Agency, Gede Wayan Suamba, on Monday (Jun. 19) , who added that this is the first year that craftsmen have bought insurance plans. Apparently they all agreed to buy insurance “Previously, we let all those who are selling at this years craft fair know about he fire last year and obliged them to buy insurance this year. The craftsmen all approved”, said Suamba. All the craft sellers in this years festival are insured. Sumaba also conveyed tht as of June 17th, the turnover of craft sales tat the Baf had reached IDR 2.8 billion with an average IDR 350 million in sales per day. (kmb42)

Vehicles leaving Bali starts to increase
NEGARA - Homecoming traffic through Gilimanuk Harbor on Monday night began to turn crowded. Incoming vehicles were dominated by motorcycles, private cars and trucks. The homecomers averagely came from East Java and West Java. They accidentally went home in advance to avoid traffic jam.
By early morning the vehicle traffic, especially private vehicles, remained crowded. The authority of ASDP Gilimanuk provides a 100-meter tent outside the main ticket counter. It is intended to anticipate the surge of vehicles, especially motorcycle estimated to occur on the fourth to second day before holiday. Aside from outside the ticket counter, tents are also installed inside the harbor parking area. In addition to private vehicles, the trucks wishing to return to Java are also crowded in Gilimanuk. Special for freight vehicles such as trucks and box vehicle, their ticket purchases are directed to the LCM dock. In the meantime, the front ticket counters are devoted to private cars. Until Tuesday morning, the vehicles queuing from the night remain to look crowded in the parking area of Gilimanuk Harbor. Though showing traffic density of vehicles leaving Bali, this condition can still be resolved. Police officers on duty from Tuesday at a number of monitoring posts scattered in Gilimanuk to arrange the traffic. As seen on Tuesday morning, the traffic, especially
motorcycles and private cars, has started booming. This amount is estimated to have not reached half of the total amount of vehicles that will be leaving Bali. By noon, the queue began to recede. Pursuant to the data collected at the ASDP Gilimanuk, the number of vehicles leaving Bali has began to increase since Sunday night. On Monday morning to Tuesday morning, there were 33 crossing ships in operation. During the day, the number of passengers reaches 41,425 people or a decrease of 8 percent from 44,959 people last year; 9,028 motorcycles or a decrease of 8 percent from last year reaching 9,786 units; and 5,083 cars or an increase of 9 percent from last year reaching 4,661 units. In the meantime, the total passengers from the tenth to sixth days before holiday or during four days reached 152,433 people or an increase of 2 percent from last year reaching 150,089 people, motorcycle reached 27,134 units or a decrease of 3 percent from last year reaching 27,988 units; and car reached 22,463 units or an increase of 10 percent from last year reaching 20,471 units. Chief of Jembrana Police Traffic Affairs, Nyoman Sukadana, when asked for his confirmation last Tuesday justified such condition. Vehicle traffic leaving Bali has showed an increase since Monday night but not to cause a long queue. Passport handed over to defendants on verdict reading
DENPASAR - Warden of Kerobokan Prison assisted by police officers, both from Bali Police and Badung Police, are still hunting the four foreign inmates alleged to have escaped through the tunnel. But, it sounds interesting and becomes a question of many parties, can foreigners escape overseas or return to their country of origin? As the rules having been applied so far, those who will travel or come to other countries are certainly using a passport. However, since the four escaping inmates, Shaud Edward Davidson, 33, from Australia; Dimitar Nikolon Iliev alias Kermi, 43, from Bulgaria; Sayed Mohammed Said, from India; and Tee Kok King, from Malaysia are involved in criminal cases so their passport was confiscated. However, the problem is that after the trial with the agenda of reading the verdict in 2016, in accordance with the verdict of the panel of judges, their passport has been submitted to the respective convicted. Section Head of General Crimes at the Denpasar Prosecutor’s Office, I Ketut Maha Agung, said on Tuesday (Jun. 20) that the four passports have been returned to the concerned people. The passports are not entrusted at prison office. “According to decision of the panel of judges, we pass the passport to the concerned (convicted). Our affairs are finished until the execution,” explained Maha Agung. In the meantime, other information received from the court office, specifically related to the convicted Shaud Edward Davidson, getting involved in immigration cases, namely data forgery, he often chats in Facebook. Moreover, according to the source, Shaud asked his friend whether after being released he will be accompanied by an officer in his deportation or simply handed over to the authorities.
Shaud is an Australian tourist who was charged with Article 130 of the Law No. 6/2011 on immigration. The judges convicted Shaud in September 2016 with a one-year imprisonment and a fine of IDR 100 million and a five-month subsidiary punishment. The prosecutor’s office executed him in October 2016. The other three inmates are Dimitar Nikolon Iliev aka Kermi, 43, from Bulgaria. He was charged under Article 363 of the Criminal Code with a criminal penalty for 7 years, a fine of IDR 100 million and a four-month subsidiary punishment. He was found guilty in cases of electronic data theft, namely the theft of ATM data and money laundering. He was also executed in 2016. The third inmate is Sayed Mohammed Said from India. He was charged with a drug case. By Prosecutor Edy Arta Eijaya, he was charged under Article 113 paragraph 2 of Law No. 35/2009 on Narcotics. By the panel of judges, Sayed was sentenced to 14 years and a fine of IDR 1 billion and a three-month subsidiary punishment. He was convicted on March 28, 2016 and executed on April 5, 2016. The fourth inmate is Tee Kok King, a citizen of Malaysia. He was also charged under drug cases and violated Article 113 paragraph 2 of Law No. 35/2009. By the judges, he was sentenced to 7 years and 6 months in prison, a fine of IDR 1.5 billion and a threemonth subsidiary punishment. He was convicted on September 15, 2016 and executed on November 10, 2016. In the meantime, police authority, namely Badung police and Bali police mobile brigade had time to check the tunnel. However, due to unfavorable conditions, namely the land is in unstable conditions, the examination was cancelled. (kmb37)

Triple Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis retiring from acting
LOS ANGELES - Three-time Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis is retiring from acting, his spokeswoman said on Tuesday, ending a storied movie career that includes performances in “Lincoln” and “Gangs of New York.” Day-Lewis, 60, the only man to have won three best actor Oscars, gave no reason for his decision, calling it private. “Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor,” his publicist, Leslee Dart, said in a statement. “He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years.” The statement said there would be no further comment. He has one more movie in the works -- “Phantom Thread,” which is set in London’s 1950s fashion world and is due to be released in December. Day-Lewis, who was born in Britain and holds dual Anglo-Irish citizenship, won his third best actor Oscar in 2013 for playing U.S. President Abraham Lincoln in “Lincoln.” His win made him the first man to be awarded three best actor Oscars in the history of the Academy Awards. He previously won Academy Awards for his roles as a paraplegic Irish writer in “My Left Foot” (1989) and a greedy early 20th century oil baron in “There Will Be Blood” (2007). The tall, intellectual actor keeps a low-key profile and is known for choosing his roles carefully and taking long breaks between films. In the late 1990s, he took time off from acting to work as an apprentice shoe-maker in Italy. After his 2013 Oscar win for “Lincoln,” London’s Sunday Times reported that he planned to take a sabbatical at his farm in Ireland. Day-Lewis is known for his meticulous preparation. For “Lincoln,” he spent months researching Lincoln’s political and personal life and before shooting began he was texting his screen wife, Sally Field, in 19th century vernacular. “For My Left Foot,” he spent weeks living in a wheelchair, and while shooting “Gangs of New York” he was known for sharpening knives between takes to capture the menace of his character Bill “The Butcher” Cutting. The Hollywood star visited at least 20 of girls in a safe house in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi. They had fled conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Sudan, Somalia, Burundi and Rwanda, UNHCR said in a statement.
It said almost all had experienced sexual and gender-based violence and many had given birth after being raped or were pregnant. “The role of sexual violence is compounded when it is carried out by someone in uniform who
has taken an oath to protect,” Jolie said. “So it is a responsibility of those who wear uniform to take the lead now by correcting from within, setting an example astepping forward with new commitments.” The UNHCR says Kenya hosts some 491,000 refugees, of which 101,713 are from South Sudan, which the U.N. has said is the world’s fastest growing refugee crisis. Extreme heat grips Northern Hemisphere on summer solstice
SINGAPORE - Extreme heat across large tracts of the Northern Hemisphere raised fears for crops in China, fuelled forest fires in Portugal and Russia’s Far East, forced flight cancellations in the Southwest U.S., and melted tarmac on roads in Britain. As Wednesday marked the summer solstice - the longest day of the year - forecasters said temperatures in Paris were expected to hit 37 Celsius (100 Fahrenheit), Madrid could see 38C, and London was set for 34C with warnings of thunderstorms. Rounding up the record temperatures set in the past two months, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said the Earth was experiencing “another exceptionally warm year” and the heatwaves were unusually early. “Parts of Europe, the Middle East, North Africa and the United States of America have seen extremely high May and June temperatures, with a number of records broken,” the WMO said late on Tuesday. The trend seen during the past two months has put average monthly global temperatures among the highest ever recorded since data began to be collated in
1880. Even before this month, U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) data showed Europe, the United States and Northeast Asia - including eastern China, Japan and South Korea - had experienced unusually warm weather between March and May. In China, the world’s top grain producer, hot and dry conditions in the main corn belt have delayed plantings and stunted crop development, especially in the province of Liaoning where soil moisture levels are at their lowest in at least five years. A study published earlier this week found that nearly one in three of the world’s people were already exposed to potentially
