KERANG, Australia – Prince William wrapped up a visit to disaster zones in Australia and New Zealand on Monday, flying into flood-stricken Australian towns even as heavy rain pummeled another part of the country. The second in line to the British throne was welcomed by hundreds of people in Kerang town in Victoria state, one of dozens across Australia that were inundated earlier this year by the country’s worst flooding in decades. Thirty-five people died in the flooding in northern Queensland state before the waters moved

south into Victoria. In a low-key visit, William was ferried around by helicopter to meet and chat with survivors in several towns that were flooded, attend numerous community barbecues and hear from local officials about cleanup and recovery operations. In Kerang, schoolchildren — some wearing homemade tiaras and waving placards — lined the

street outside the sports ground where events were held for the prince. At one point, William made a passable attempt at kicking an Australian Rules Football. Bali News Erosion at Yehembang Kauh reaches road body Negara (Bali Post)—

The recent floods in Yehembang River resulted in erosions at a number of river banks. Even, the damage due to erosion was almost cut off the road access of Yehembang to Kedisan. A number of vehicles passing through the village road were forced to step aside and some did not dared to pass since they were fear of getting stuck. Observations on site made on Sunday (Mar 20), a few points on the river bank seemed to collapse as eroded by water stream. The recent flash flood aggravated the cliff damage. As seen at the hamlet of Sekar Kejula Kelod, the village roads located on the river bank was eroded until nearly a half the road body. Meanwhile, the cracks had touched down the street. For security measure, local residents intentionally placed a crack of wood and plastic to remind the passing vehicles as a caution. According to them, the road was still safe when crossed by motorcycle, but cars and trucks should be very careful as the land was unstable and the crack had reached half the road section. Especially at night, lack of lighting at the location caused the road invisible. “Without being careful, was can sink here,” explained one of the passers-by of Kedisan. Some of the trucks passing through the location were forced to step aside to avoid the damaged cliff. As occurred several days ago, a truck carrying dozens of gamelan troupe should unload its passengers as it was worried to get slipped. Along the cliff side of the road, people could not see a revetment. But, some points along the river basin had been protected by revetment. Likewise, erosion also caused revetment in the north of SD 4 Yehembang Kauh primary school to collapse. Yet, according to local residents, such a condition had been going on for long time. Luckily, there was a road between the river bank and the primary school. The difference, this point had been protected by a revetment. Allegedly, the revetment dropped as it was not strong enough to hold the river streams. On the other hand, the Village Head of Yehembang Kauh, I Nyoman Silayasa, when asked for his confirmation by Bali Post on Sunday, justified if the erosion in the region was getting more serious. Even, the road to Kedisan was difficult to be passed through by trucks because a crack happened to almost half the road. His party had reported the condition to the Jembrana Regency Government since the incident last year. A number of legislators of Jembrana House and even the Bali Public Works measured the location but it had not been followed up yet. Aside from at that location, so far there were three points on the path of Yehembang River passing through the Yehembang Kauh Village eroded by the erosion. “Due to raining cats and dogs accompanied by flooding, the road was getting more damaged. Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika had reminded the Deputy Regent of Klungkung, Tjok Gede Agung, to pay attention to the Klungkung-Besakih road section, especially the road in front of Tegak Market and Selat Village Market. The road section had many potholes. Additionally, garbage also scattered around and local traders put their merchandise until coming near to the sidewalk. Such warning was delivered by governor before the Deputy Regent of Klungkung when he paid a visit to floods afflicting the SMAN 1 Dawan senior high school in September 2010. As it was a provincial road, the governor asked the Klungkung Regency Government to make coordination with relevant agencies in provincial government to respond to the damaged road and scattered garbage. Unfortunately, the reminder of governor was ignored. Proven, up to these days the road section of the Tegak Market to Selat Village Market remained in damaged condition. There were potholes everywhere. Of course, it would become a threat to motorists. Moreover, during the period of Ida Bathara Turun Kabeh ritual in Besakih Temple as today, thousands of devotees from all over Bali passed through the road section to Besakih for some few days. They rode motorcycle, drove private cars or chartered public transportation to large-sized buses. According to testimony of local people met at location on Sunday (Mar

20), the working on the road in front of the Tegak Market or Selat Market was not optimal. “Not long ago, it had been patched, but in relatively short time later the road was getting damaged,” said Mudarta, one of the local residents. Another resident told that the road section (before Tegak or Selat Market—Ed) had crowded traffic and was a vital route to Bali because it was passed through by many travelers heading for Besakih Temple tourist attraction. “Moreover, it coincides with the grandiose annual ritual as today (Ida Bathara Turun Kabeh—Ed),” added the resident.

Based on observation, other than scattered garbage, the road conditions before the Tegak or Selat Market was aggravated by many potholes. Inevitably, traffic congestion often occurred at that point. Some time ago, a car even crashed one of the kiosks nearby to avoid the damaged road section. Aside from the damage in front of the Tegak or Selat Market, many other sections of provincial roads were damaged (broken and holey) as well. Among others, they could be seen on the east side Satria Hamlet Hall (public road heading for Paksebali), in the west of SMAN 1 Semarapura senior high school and some others. (kmb20)

Those who continued to pray in Pura Besakih temple are directed through Gunung Kunyit not through Penelokan. Every time the Class II A Denpasar Jail, Kerobokan Jail, got raided another forbidden stuffs were found. Hence this Friday (18/3) officers found 11 cell phones and a number of knives with no owner. This kind of checking is incidental or sudden done routinely on several blocks. Officers found it in rubbish bins or places far from the blocks. The phones had no owner name and the numbers dialled are all erased. “Their memories are all erased so it’s hard to know,” Head of Kerobokan Jail, Siswanto, stated. According to Siswanto those who were found to have it will be given more punishment especially for year 2011, either

remission in Independence Day or religious days, none suggested or given. For the knives, they were all modified, some made from spoon, folded knives, cutters and more. It is known it’s never used to hurt others yet it will still be confiscated. On narcotics, there were none found this time, “It’s really small so it’s hard to see it with own eyes except the jail has sniffing dogs or maybe a mechanism that’s easier to handle with.” Siswanto also did not deny that there might be any of them even though in the entrance gate there were X-Ray machines. Gedong Kertya Entrance Threaten Collapsed Singaraja (Bali Post) –

The historical place Gedong Kertya is in need of attention otherwise it’ll be gone just like that. Besides its old books and lontar (written papyrus leaves) were destroyed eaten by termites, its building was also worrying. One of them is the gapura (traditional entrance gate) which has its doors and supporting pole destroyed also eaten by termites. Its bricks arrangement also have mostly fallen down causing it could collapse due to vehicles vibration passing by in Veteran Street, Singaraja and could put visitors

in danger. Head of Gedong Kertya Regional Technical Management Unit (UPTD), Suharsana, have suggested a repairing budget for IDR 17 million for the upper part of the building and also fixing the gapura. “We have proposed it several times yet it was never given. We were hoping it is outside the operational budget,” he stated. Shockingly the operational budget for 2011 has been decreased from IDR 49.5 million to IDR 46.5 million. “We can’t do anything anymore and this gapura only waits its time to collapse,” (kmb)

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

JERUSALEM – Palestinian militants fired two rockets into southern Israel on Sunday and Israeli troops killed two Palestinians in a new outburst along the volatile border with Gaza. The violence came a day after Palestinian militants fired more than 50 mortar shells into Israel — the heaviest Palestinian barrage since a bruising Israeli military offensive in Gaza two years ago. Both sides have largely honored an informal cease-fire since the 2009 war, in which about 1,400 Palestinians were killed, including militants and civilians. Israel says Hamas has rebuilt its arsenal, and a pattern of rocket attacks and Israeli reprisals has escalated in recent weeks. The Hamas-allied Popular Resistance Committees claimed responsibility for Sunday morning’s rocket attack, which caused no injuries or damage. Militants in Gaza fired another rocket into southern Israel in the evening, exploding near the city of Ashkelon. No one was hurt. City officials however said higher-thanstandard levels of iodine were found in an edible form of chrysanthemum. “From reports I have heard so far, it seems that the levels of radioactive iodine and caesium in milk and some foodstuffs are significantly higher than government limits,” said Jim Smith, a specialist in earth and environmental sciences at Britain’s Portsmouth University. “This doesn’t mean that consumption of these products is necessarily an immediate threat, as limits are set so that foodstuffs can be safely consumed over a fairly long period of time. Nevertheless, for foodstuffs which are found to be above limits, bans on sale and consumption will have to be put in place in the affected areas.” Japan is a net importer of food, but has substantial exports — mainly fruit, vegetables, dairy products and seafood — with its biggest markets in Hong Kong, China and the United States. China will monitor food imported from Japan, the Xinhua news agency said, citing the country’s quality control watchdog. The World Bank recruited the practicians in the Financial Infrastructure Week to enable them to discuss three important areas of the financial infrastructure. The three are the system of payments and remissions, reporting credits, and safe transactions. The practicianers also discussed what need to be done by national authorities, private sector, and other functioners in developing

the financial market infrastructure. The World Bank said the global financial infrastructure is the backbone of every economic financial system everywhere. The quality of the financial infrastructure of any country determines the efficiency of intermediation, the ability to give loans for risk evaluation and those who received the loans for credits and other financial products on a competitive basis. In this way, a safe and efficient financial structure will provide stability for the global financial system. He also mentioned the need for emphasis not only to create a just competitive market condition but also in the development of a collaborative ecosystem where growth could be achieved while at the same time security and efficiency of the financial system. Bomb squad deployed to South Jakarta Antara

JAKARTA - The Jakarta metropolitan police deployed a bomb squad to examine a suspicious package at “The Energy” building inside the SCBD office building in South Jakarta on Monday. “The bomb squad personnel are examining the suspicious package,” South Jakarta police chief Senior Commissioner Gatot Edy Pramono said. They arrived at the building at 10.15 AM local time on a special vehicle. A number of workers had been evacuated from their office building after the security guards found a small box with a brown cover on the 27th floor. The package had been sent to the office on March 18 but the metal detector gave a suspicious signal, he said. A series of bomb threats had rocked parts of Indonesia last week. A Jakarta metropolitan police bomb squad had even detonated a suspicious package that a local resi-

dent named Iskandar had received last Saturday (March 19). Earlier on the day, the Jakarta metropolitan police also disposed of a package that Jakarta-based Muhammadiyah University‘s Rector, Masyitoh Chusnan, received. On March 15, four packages containing books with bombs planted in them were sent to Ulil Abshar Abdalla, activist of the Islam Liberal Network, Goris Mere, the chief of the National Anti-Narcotics Agency, Yapto Soeryosumarno, the chief of the Pancasila Youth organization, and Ahmad Dhani, a musician. Banten Province, also received a bomb threat on March 18. On March 19, a church at Titi Papan Road in Medan, North Sumatran province, also received a bomb threat. In response to these bomb threats, House of Representatives Speaker Marzuki Alie urged the police to immediately unveil the perpetrators of the recent parcel bomb scare so that it would not turn into a political issue. Indonesia has been fighting terrorist cells in the country since the 2002 Bali bombings that claimed 202 lives, including 88 Australian holiday makers. Two years before the terrorists attacked the resort island of Bali, Indonesia was rocked by the Christmas eve bombings in 2000. The latest bombing incident occurred in July 2009. At that time, two suicide bombers simultaneously attacked two luxurious hotels in South Jakarta, killing several people.

RI‘s tuna exports to Japan down 50 percent Antara

JAKARTA - Indonesia‘s tuna exports to Tokyo, the capital city of Japan, dropped by around 50 percent in the aftermath of the massive earthquake and tsunami which devastated the eastern coast of Japan last March 11, 2011. “Our (tuna) exports to Japan dropped by around 50 percent,” the marine affairs and fisheries ministry`s director general fishery product marketing and management, Victor Nikijuluw, said here Monday. Indonesia usually exported 300 tons of tune per week to Tokyo, but last the the export volume was just 150 tons, he said. The country exports big eye and swordfish tuna to Tokyo.

Meanwhile, tuna exports to Nagoya and Osaka run normally because the two regions are not affected by the natural disaster. “Exports to Nagoya and Osaka are not affected,” he said. Earlier the ministry‘s secretary general, Gellwyn Jusuf, had said that the Japan earthquake and subsequent tsunami had affected Indonesia‘s fishery products exports to Japan, especially tuna and shrimp. The shrimp exports to Japan in the future might reach only one third of the usual shrimp export volume, he said last Thursday (March 17). Indonesia would look for alternative countries of destination such as the European Union, the United States and China, as their demands for shrimp have increased, he said.

DENPASAR – The Indonesian Council of Hindu Study Department stated that they doesn’t agree regarding the revision on the rule of Bali spatial plan. I Nyoman Gelebet, the member of the department, said Monday, “we don’t think that is necessary to revise the rule. SPICE PASTE: 5 red chilies, seeded and chopped 3 cloves garlic, peeled and chopped 7 shallots, peeled and chopped 5 cm fresh turmeric, peeled and chopped 5 cm ginger, peeled and chopped 4 candlenuts 1 ½ tsp coriander ½ tsp dried shrimp paste toasted 1 sml tomato, peeled and seeded 2 tbsp oil 1 ½ tbsp tamarind pulp 1 salam leaf 1 lemon grass, bruised PREPARATION: Prepare spice paste by grinding or blending all ingredients except oil, tamarind, salam leaf and lemongrass. Heat oil, add spice paste and all other ingredients. Cook over moderate heat for about 5 minutes, then cool. Wash lobsters and leave whole. Bring water to the boil, add lobsters and simmer for 15 minutes. Remove lobsters, plunge in iced water for 1 minutes, then drain and remove meat. Return shells to the pot of water, keeping lobster meat aside. Add spice paste, lemongrass, lime leaves and vinegar to the water with the shells and simmer until 4 cups of stock remain. Add coconut milk and simmer for 10 minutes. Strain stock and return to pan. Add lobster and simmer for 1 minute. Serve garnished with fried shallots and accompanied by white rice. Helpful hints: if using prawns instead of lobster, peel the raw prawns and put prawns shells 4 cups of water. Disaster could cost Japan $235 billion: World Bank Agence France-Presse

SINGAPORE – Japan’s massive earthquake and tsunami could cost its economy up to $235 billion, or 4.0 percent of output, and reconstruction could take five years, the World Bank warned Monday. “If history is any guide, real GDP growth will be negatively affected through mid-2011,” the Bank said in its latest East Asia and Pacific Economic Update report. But growth should pick up in subsequent quarters “as reconstruction efforts, which could last five years, accelerate”, it added. The lower end of the damage estimates, based on projections by the Japanese government and the private sector as of March 17, was equivalent to 2.5 percent of gross domestic product (GDP), or $122 billion. Ratings agency Moody’s in a special report said downside risks had increased over the past week for Japan’s economy, sovereign credit, banking, insurance, and non-financial corporate sectors. World Bank chief regional economist Vikram Nehru said a nuclear crisis arising from a power plant crippled by the disasters has complicated the situation and its impact will depend on how long it takes to solve the problem. Nehru said the Japanese yen, which shot to post-war highs against the US dollar after the disasters, was expected to normalise after Japan and its fellow G7 rich nations vowed action to stem the currency’s rise. “We’re not terribly worried about that,” Nehru told reporters in Singapore. “The expectation is that this strengthening of the yen was relatively temporary.” Japanese financial markets were closed Monday.

The dollar, which had immediately strengthened after the G7 move, was trading firmer at 80.928 yen in afternoon Asian trade Monday, up from 80.59 in New York late Friday. Japan’s GDP grew 3.9 percent in 2010, when it was overtaken by China as the world’s second-biggest economy after being mired in a malaise since a property bubble burst in the early 1990s. Nehru said the Japan disasters would affect the rest of Asia but it was too early to give estimates of the cost to the region. “In the immediate future, the biggest impact will be in terms of trade and finance,” he said on the sidelines of a regional conference. The World Bank noted that after the 1995 Kobe earthquake, Japan’s trade slowed only for a few quarters, with imports recovering fully within a year and exports rebounding to 85 percent of pre-quake levels in the same period. “But this time around, disruption to production networks, especially in automotive and electronics industries, could continue to pose problems (beyond one year),” the report added. The World Bank noted that developing East Asia’s trade with Japan accounted for about 9.0 percent of the region’s total external trade in the past five years. It estimated exports from the region could slow by 0.75-1.5 percent if Japan’s GDP shrank 0.25-0.5 percent.

The auto and electronics industries are already feeling the impact from the country’s deadliest natural disaster since 1923, with production at major companies including Toyota and Sony disrupted. In the electronics sector, prices of memory chips — Japan supplies up to 36 percent globally — have shot up by more than 20 percent in some segments, the World Bank said. Reconstruction efforts may also affect East Asian countries holding yen-denominated liabilities, according to the report. “A one percent appreciation in the Japanese yen translates into a $250 million increase in annual debt servicing on yen-denominated liabilities,” the Bank said. One-quarter of the region’s developing economies have long-term debt denominated in yen — ranging from eight percent in China to roughly 60 percent in Thailand, said the World Bank. Reinsurance giant Swiss Re estimated Monday that the earthquake and tsunami had cost it $1.2 billion (847 million euros), but said this figure could be revised upwards. US billionnaire investor Warren Buffett, however, said the disasters would not hamper the Japanese economy and could prompt new stock buying. “I’m not looking at Japan’s economic future differently from 10 days ago... extraordinary events offer (a) buying opportunity,” he told reporters during a visit to South Korea.

Japan quake leads GM Korea to cut production Agence France-Presse

SEOUL – The South Korean unit of General Motors said Monday it would reduce production this week by up to 10 percent because of a possible lack of parts from Japan following the devastating earthquake. GM Korea — formerly GM Daewoo — said it would stop four hours a day of overtime work from Monday at its plants in the western city of Bupyeong and in the southwestern port of Gunsan.

The company said it would also suspend eight hours a day of extra work during the weekend at Gunsan. But it will maintain its current work schedule at its plant in the southern city of Changwon. “Overall, up to 10 percent of production will be reduced,” a GM Korea spokesman told AFP. “The move is temporary, and our company will decide whether to reduce production next week while watching the situation in Japan,” he said. GM owns a 70.1 percent stake

in GM Korea, the manufacturing base for smaller vehicles for the Detroit-based carmaker. Its market share in South Korea was just around eight percent last year. South Korea’s top automaker Hyundai Motor and its affiliate Kia Motors said they have not been affected by the March 11 quake and tsunami in Japan. Hyundai and Kia together form the world’s fifth-largest carmaking group by sales. They use only about one percent of parts from Japan.

TOKYO - Sony Corp said it would partially restart a lithium ion battery factory in Tochigi prefecture on Tuesday, leaving six plants, which make a range of devices from integrated circuit cards to Blu-ray discs, still closed. The consumer electronics giant is one of dozens of Japanese companies to shut factories and slash output following the March 11 earthquake and tsunami which have disrupted supplies. Japan is reeling from a humanitarian and nuclear crisis after the 9.0 magnitude earthquake and tsunami. The country is a key supplier to the global auto and technology industries. It has begun work to bring the factory back on line, but has no timeframe to resume output. Toshiba said an assembly line at a plant in Japan making small liquid crystal displays for smartphones and other devices will be closed for a month to repair damaged machinery. Sony is not sure when its plants will resume operations. Some of the plants’ output is supplied to other manufacturers, including customers overseas. Renesas, the world’s No.5 chipmaker, has halted operations at 8 of its facilities and is also unsure when production will resume. The company said it was unlikely to start some of its plants until the threat of power cuts, expected to last until the end of April, diminished.

Anti-suicide Trevor Project to honor Radcliffe Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK – Daniel Radcliffe looks forward to a tolerant world where young people grow up unaffected by differences in sexual orientation. For the past couple of years, the “Harry Potter” star has been doing his part to make that a reality with his work with the Trevor Project, the leading organization for suicide prevention efforts among gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered youths. For his contribution, Radcliffe is being honored with the organization’s Hero Award at a ceremony in NewYork in June. “It’s fantastic,” Radcliffe told The Associated Press. “The fact that they think of what I’ve done by promoting awareness of the Trevor Project itself and the issues that it works to promote and help is a great honor.” The Trevor Hero Award, announced Monday, recognizes a person who serves as an inspiration to sexual minority youths and increases visibility and understanding of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning, or LGBTQ, community. Past Hero Award recipients include screen and stage actor Nathan Lane, screenwriter Dustin Lance Black and former Miss America and “Ugly Betty” actress Vanessa Williams. While privileged to be a part of this group carrying forward the organization’s life-saving work, Radcliffe said he feels a little bashful about it, too. “The people that are doing the heroic things are the people answering phones 24 hours a day in the Trevor call centers,” he said. “I think that out of everything that I’ve done so far in my career, I think this is absolutely one of the most important, if not the most important, thing that I’m associated with.” Radcliffe, currently appearing in the Broadway revival of “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying,” says audience members often acknowledge his work with the organization. “I meet people at the stage door every night that thank me for what I’m doing with the Trevor project,” he said proudly. The Trevor Project was founded in 1998 by filmmakers James Lecesne,

Peggy Rajski and Randy Stone. Their 1994 film, “Trevor,” about a gay 13-year-old boy who tried to commit suicide after his friends learned of his sexuality, won the Academy Award for Film Short. The film was the catalyst for the birth of the organization after it was shown on HBO in 1998. Radcliffe became aware of the Trevor Project in 2008 during his Broadway debut in a revival of “Equus.” Since 2009, he has appeared in public service announcements and has made public statements in support of the organization. The last installment of the “Harry Potter” franchise, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Harrows Part 2,” will be released in June. Along with Radcliffe, who plays the title character in the “Harry Potter” movies,” the Trevor Project will honor Ernst & Young LLP with the Trevor 2020 Award, for a corporation that has provided support for the community and increased understanding of LGBTQ issues.

specific geographic areas. One study will focus on Midwestern corn, another on wheat in the Northwest and a third on Southern pine forests. Shifting weather patterns already have had a big effect on U.S. agriculture, and the country needs to prepare for even greater changes, said Roger Beachy, director of the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, an arm of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. And since the changes are expected to vary from region to region, he said different areas will need different solutions. Some areas may gain longer growing seasons or suffer more frequent floods, while others may experience more droughts or shorter growing seasons. “What the climatologists have predicted is that the areas that were at one time wet will in fact be dry and hot, not wet and cool,” Beachy said as an example. “If that’s correct, then we need to have varieties of crops that will grow in those areas and are adaptable to the changes in the climate. So really it comes down to if we don’t do this, we may have some food shortages in certain kinds of foods.” The corn project will be led by a rural sociologist, Lois Wright Morton of Iowa State University. She said the collaboration between climatologists, soil scientists, plant scientists and others means the researchers will be asking questions they might never have thought of before. “We really have assembled what I really think of as the really top scientists in the agricultural arena to address these (issues),” Wright Morton said, adding that her team members are not only experts in their fields, they’re willing to learn from others. “That’s a pretty potent combination.” Tim Martin, a professor of tree physiology at the University of Florida and the head of the forestry project, said it will focus on the loblolly pine, which covers 80 percent of the planted forest land in the southeastern U.S. Southern pine forests produce more wood products than any others in the country, and they pull a huge amount of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere, making them important to the economy and environment, he said.

Wolves could be removed from endangered species list Reuters

SALMON, Idaho – The U.S. government said on Friday it had struck a deal with wildlife advocates to remove some 1,200 wolves in Idaho and Montana from the endangered species list. Federal protections could be lifted from the wolves if a federal judge signs off on a settlement agreement filed on Friday in U.S. District Court in Montana. The wildlife groups had sued to keep roughly 1,600 wolves in the Northern Rockies on the endangered species list. Under the proposed agreement between the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and 10 conservation groups, the estimated 1,200 wolves in Idaho and Montana would be delisted and management of the animals, including target population numbers and hunting quotas, would be handed back to those states. The government in 2009 approved wolfmanagement plans by Idaho and Montana

and removed federal protections in those states, which established public hunts. But the Fish and Wildlife Service declined delisting in Wyoming because its plan would have allowed most wolves to be shot on sight. A U.S. District Court ruling in 2010 relisted wolves in Idaho and Montana. The federal judge in the case sided with 14 conservation groups, which had argued wolves in the Northern Rockies were part of a single population and that protections could not be left intact in Wyoming while they were lifted in the other two states. Ten of the 14 conservation groups behind that legal action are now seeking to settle with the Fish and Wildlife Service, opening the way for licensed hunting in Idaho and Montana. Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer on Friday hailed the move, calling it “a significant step forward.” “We need the authority to respond to the challenges wolves present every day,” he said in a statement.

Djokovic defeats Nadal to win Indian Wells crown Agence France Presse

INDIAN WELLS, California – Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic won the ATP Indian Wells title, rallying to beat world No. 1 Rafael Nadal 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 and improve his record this season to 18-0. Djokovic, who took over the No. 2 world ranking by beating Roger Federer in the semi-finals, on Sunday avenged a loss to Nadal in the 2007 Indian Wells final. The 23-year-old Serbian has looked invincible this season and Sunday’s victory in the California desert underlined that. Djokovic fired four aces, including two key ones to hold serve in the second set, in the two-hour, 25-minute match to capture his second Indian Wells crown. “I am having the best period of my life on the tennis court,” Djokovic said. “I am playing with a lot of confidence. I’m feeling the ball well on the court. I’m very dedicated and I have a big will to win each match. “So it will not stop here.” Djokovic took the second set in dramatic style, winning a marathon ninth game on the sixth set point after Nadal had saved five. Djokovic broke Nadal in the first game of the third set and cruised to victory from there. He hammered aces on the final points to hold serve in the fourth and sixth games. Djokovic has compiled an incredible 18-match win streak this season and is 20-0 dating to the Davis Cup final in December. Besides winning the Australian Open this season, he captured his 20th career title last month in Dubai. “I am extremely happy with the way I’m playing and with the success that I’m having,” Djokovic said. “But I know that the season is very long and I don’t want to be too euphoric about the win. Stoner fights to Qatar GP victory Casey Stoner commenced his first season as a factory Honda rider with victory in Qatar - but the result was not the Honda steamroller that was anticipated. Honda did not even manage to deliver a one-two, with world champion Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha) battling through to second ahead of Honda’s Dani Pedrosa.

Lorenzo: I gave it everything JORGE Lorenzo said he put everything he had into his ride to second place in the Qatar Grand Prix, as the world champion defied expectations that Yamaha would struggle in the 2011 opener. Lorenzo himself had been pessimistic about his chances a week ago, having been unable to match the dominant Hondas in pre-season testing, when a lack of straightline performance proved a particularly costly issue for Yamaha. But he was pleased to qualify as high as third yesterday, and was then able to take the fight to the Hondas in the race - briefly leading, eventually beating Dani Pedrosa to second and finishing within four seconds of

Valentino Rossi started his Ducati career with seventh place after a hardfought race. Stoner had fallen from pole to third at the start, as Pedrosa moved into the lead for half a lap before the hard-charging Lorenzo slipped ahead. But Honda - which had been quickest in every pre-season test and all the practice sessions at Losail soon flexed its muscles and by the end of lap two Stoner and Pedrosa were back to first and second. Stoner was unable to shake his team-mate off, and at the start of lap six the Spaniard sliced down the inside at Turn 1 to take the lead. With the smaller Pedrosa proving faster down the straights, Stoner needed several laps to find a way back past, eventually getting through into Turn 12 on lap 13. Stoner then immediately blasted in a new fastest race lap to instantly open up a 1.2-second lead over Pedrosa. The Australian duly pulled away to win in Qatar for the fourth time in five years, while Pedrosa found himself under huge pressure from Lorenzo. The two Spaniards would swap places four times in as many laps, before Lorenzo managed to get away and secure second as Pedrosa’s pace faded. He only just held off the third works Honda of Andrea Dovizioso for third, the Italian having won a

tough battle with compatriot Marco Simoncelli (Gresini Honda). Yamaha’s Ben Spies lost ground on the first lap and was only able to recover to sixth, having become embroiled in a spectacular dice with Rossi. The seven-time champion had thrust his Ducati from ninth to second by the first corner of the race, but was down to seventh again by halfway around the lap and was fighting a rearguard action for most of the distance. As he had predicted as his recovery from shoulder surgery continues, Rossi fell away in the closing stages. His team-mate Nicky Hayden made good progress in the race to come through to ninth, right behind Tech 3 Yamaha’s Colin Edwards, having put a late move on 10th-placed Hiroshi Aoyama’s Gresini Honda. Qualifying stars Cal Crutchlow (Tech 3) and Hector Barbera (Aspar Ducati) slipped back to 11th and 12th in the grand prix, jostling all the way to the flag. Newcomer Karel Abraham completed the finishers on the AB Cardion Ducati. The two Pramac Ducatis both had to retire after Randy de Puniet crashed on the first lap trying to pass Loris Capirossi and clipped his team-mate. LCR Honda’s Toni Elias also fell in the closing stages while struggling in last place.
