MANILA – A Philippine volcano erupted on Monday showering an entire town with ash, although there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties, officials said. A large ash explosion from Bulusan, a 1,559-metre (5,115foot) volcano, drifted south to cover Irosin, a town of 46,000 people, said Harriet Sayson, of the civil defence operations centre in nearby Legaspi city. “There’s zero visibility at Irosin at the moment, and we can’t get in touch with officials there,” Sayson told AFP by telephone. She said civil defence staff were in the town checking for damage or casualties, but none had been reported so far. No evacuations had been ordered, she added. Bitten by a dog two years ago, a rabies suspect patient dies Incubation period of rabies virus within the body cannot be predicted. There are ones taking for months to reach the brain, while few others take for years. They all depend on the location of the wound, size of the wound until the number of virus entry. Such a case happened to one of the residents of Tabu Hamlet, Songan, Kintamani Bangli, Dewen, 22. The man had been hospitalized in Sanglah since Friday (Feb 18) and died on Sunday (Feb 20). Dewen was taken to Sanglah Hospital as a rabies suspect patient. He had received treatment in Nusa Indah Room. Secretary of the Rabies Management Team of Sanglah Hospital, Ken Wirasandi, when contacted on Sunday said that Dewen had a record of being bitten by a dog about two years ago on his leg. He was bitten by a wild dog that died a day after biting Dewen. “The patient did not get the anti-rabies vaccine (VAR) and not wash the wound pursuant to procedures for handling rabies,” said Ken. Three days before rushed to Sanglah Hospital, Dewen already shown off phobia of water and

air. He always complained about shortness of breath when seeing water or feeling the wind. When treated, Dewen indicated the symptoms of anxiety and rampage. “Similarly, the patient has gone through hydrophobia and aerophobia as well as salivated a lot,” said Ken. The body of Dewen was directly taken home by his family. Meanwhile, to ascertain whether Dewen was positive to rabies, according to Ken, his party was awaiting for the result of laboratory test. In 2011, it was recorded that six rabies victims died consisting of one victim in January and five others in February. (san)

IDR 903,6 Million For Stray Dogs ”Jail” Denpasar (Bali Post)

In the 2011 Budget, the program to tackle rabies will be a priority to the Bali Animal Husbandry Agency. To do so the Agency is planning to build 753 units of stray dogs cages. One unit is predicted to finish IDR 1,2 million and so IDR 903,6 million of the Bali State Budget and Expenses will be used to make these “jails”. Head of the Agency, Ir. I Putu Sumantra, M.App, Sc., stated this to Bali Post last Sunday (20/2). According to Sumantra one jail will be built on each village in Bali. After this he hoped there will be no more stray dogs lurking around, “Remembering rabies has took many lives, I hope all Bali residents will participate actively in succeeding this program. Such as participating in capturing stray dogs in their villages.” He also warned those who

pet dogs to keep their dogs away from stray dogs so they won’t get rabies infected. Besides building these cages, the Agency with each regency’s agency will intensify the mass vaccination program. So far at least 300 thousand dogs in Bali are targets for mass vaccination mostly booster. For this there will be socialization, operational fee and more. The Bali Government predicts they will need minimum IDR 25 billion, “Mass dogs vaccinations are a continuation to the mass vaccination that did not go optimally on year 2010 due to late vaccination operational fee liquidation from the Agriculture Ministry IDR 14 billion.” It is clarified the vaccination will go on as plan if the promised operational fee did not come late from the central government, “I hope, the liquidation process won’t be late again like last year.” (kmb13)

In 2011, Gianyar Regency obtains rehabilitation assistance for Dipta Stadium, Buruan from the Ministry of Youth and Sports worth IDR 5 billion. With such amount of fund, the regency government is only able to rehabilitate the stadium exterior only. In the meantime, the interior is still waiting for help in the next phase. Based on information gathered on Sunday (Feb 20), the rehabilitation project of the stadium by Regency Government worked on by contractor from January 24, 2011 was only carried out on stadium exterior because the fund of IDR 5 billion was also allocated

to establish a circuit track located outside the Dipta Stadium. The development with the assistance fund was not focused on the rehabilitation of the stadium building. The budget of IDR 5 billion was allocated to rehabilitate the stadium and establish a circuit. When contacted, the Head of Gianyar Public Works, Nyoman Nuadi, mentioned that stadium rehabilitation this year would be performed on the stadium exterior spending approximately IDR 2.5 billion, while the rest will be allocated for the construction of circuit road. The IDR 5 billion of fund obtained was based on proposal submitted to Minister of Youth and Sports with

the initial amount of IDR 30 billion. “However, in this year’s stage we only get at the amount of IDR 5 billion,” he explained. Of the IDR 2.5 billion of fund for the stadium rehabilitation, Nuadi claimed to have not been maximal. With the budget, the construction covered would be the creation of Balinese ornament on each pole of the stadium, partition of administrative room on the southern and eastern section as well as some infrastructures outside the stadium. “Stadium interior cannot be worked on this year with the amount of the fund. The effort to reveal the credit card robbery took place in Kuta has given its result. Kuta Police force led by Adjunct Police Commissioner I Gede Ganefo, SH, MM, successfully caught three of them, Catur Sudarmawan, Jalam Fahrudin and Gede Adi Purwanta. The crime group was captured at where they work last Tuesday (15/2) and now placed at Kuta Police to be investigated intensively. Head of Bali Police Public Relation, Great Commissioner Gde Sugianyar last Sunday (20/2) stated that the case was after deep investigation for more than a week, “The three accused has been jailed. Now investigators are investigating them intensively and developing the case.” It started with the many cases reported to the police with the last one coming from Meghan Lee Tailor from Australia. Victim admitted her credit card has been robbed and so Ganefo commanded his of-

ficers to investigate straight away. Victim admitted had left a credit card while shopping at Circle-K in Kuta as she was on a hurry and forgot to take it. From that police then went to the shop and two Circle-K workers (Jamal Farudin and Gede Adi Purwanta, red) were checked. It was then revealed what has happened, “The accused used the tourist weak point. When they knew she left it they used it.” The credit card was then given to Catur and he used it to shop in several shops. After getting the

item, Catur then sell it again so it can be cashed straight away. Then these cashes were then given to the two other accused, “There were many tourists becoming victims. This is seen from the evidences found.” The evidences found were other 12 credit cards owned by other foreigners, Samsung phone, transaction bills and IDR 150 thousand. For further investigation, accused and evidences were then confiscated by the Police, “The case is being developed further.” (kmb21)

Pecatu Cross Circuit Complained Not only tourist accommodations that grew at Pecatu Village. A motor cross circuit is also built at Melasti Road, Labuan Sait and being used every night causing residents and tourists staying in this area uncomfortable. According to Madame Kadek, a resident that lived near the place said the circuit has operated these past few months. The circuit’s area reached hectares and not only local or domesetic people who used it but also foreigners. She said at night it kept being used and the owner has planned to put lighting on the circuit around 20 to 30 units. The activity especially at night time is very disturbing residents and tourists, “It’s very noisy in the evening. Little kids even cried because they can’t sleep.” Similar to her sayings, a resident who doesn’t want to be known its name, said the location of the circuit is actually limited as in it’s not allowed to be built. Condition of forests at Penyaringan, Mendoyo, is now getting worse. Approximately 65 hectares of forests have degraded and set to be looted. Without a doubt, this condition goes up against the program of Jembrana Regency to realize the ‘Zero visit to forest’ to suppress the forest destruction and deforestation carried out by perpetrators of illegal logging and looting practices. As a result of rampant forest looting, the territory of subak (Balinese irrigation cooperative) in Mendoyo faced a water shortage and drought because the local subak member relies on water flows of Biluk Poh River located in the region. In responding to the increasingly severe forest looting and drought experienced by the subak members, village officials together with the community and authorities performed the logging of banana, corn and other crops planted in the midst of the forest on Sunday (Feb 20). Afterward, they were replaced with greening plants by planting around 1,500 trees obtained from the Forest Tree Seedlings of Bali Province and Jembrana Regency. Such reforestation activities, other than carried out by the community and subak members, also involved the personnel of Military District Commander of Jembrana, Jembrana Agricultural, Forestry and Maritime Services (PKL), development agency for public order and safety (Babinkamtibmas), pub-

Meanwhile, the Head of Jembrana Agricultural, Forestry and Maritime Services, Ketut Windra, said that the greening initiative was indeed from local village. He recognized that the supervision against the protected forest remained under the authority of Provincial Government. “We’re still waiting for some inputs from administrative and customary villages as well as subak members. Additionally, we could have given an answer or solution because the forest is under the authority of Provincial Government, even though there is a discourse on village forests. We do not know for sure what it is like because, it is said, remaining to wait approval through the Decree of the Ministry of Forestry and until now our party has not received it,” he said. (120)

Gadhafi’s son warns of civil war in Libya Associated Press Writer

CAIRO – After anti-government unrest spread to the Libyan capital of Tripoli and protesters seized military bases and weapons Sunday, Moammar Gadhafi’s son went on state television to proclaim that his father remained in charge with the army’s backing and would “fight until the last man, the last woman, the last bullet.” Seif al-Islam Gadhafi, in the regime’s first comments on the six days of demonstrations, warned the protesters that they risked igniting a civil war in which Libya’s oil wealth “will be burned.” The speech followed a fierce crackdown by security forces who fired on thousands of demonstrators and funeral marchers in the eastern city of Benghazi in a bloody cycle of violence that killed 60 people on Sunday alone, according to a doctor in one city hospital. Since the six days of unrest began, more than 200 people have been killed, according to medical officials, human rights groups and exiled dissidents. He offered to put forward reforms within days that he described as a “historic national initiative” and said the regime was willing to remove some restrictions and begin discussions for a constitution. He offered to change a number of laws, including those covering the media and the penal code. Dressed in a dark business suit and tie, Seif al-Islam wagged his finger frequently as he delivered his warnings. He said that if protests continued, Libya would slide back to “colonial” rule. “You will get Americans and European fleets coming your way and they will occupy you. He threatened to “eradicate the pockets of sedition” and said the army will play a main role in restoring order.

MUMBAI – Two Indian judges on Monday confirmed the death sentence for the sole surviving gunman of the 2008 Mumbai attacks, in which 10 Islamist gunmen laid siege to the city, killing 166 people. The Bombay High Court dismissed the claim by Pakistani national Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab that he was wrongfully convicted of taking part in the attacks, likened in India to those in the United States on September 11, 2001. The judges also threw out the state’s appeal against a lower court’s decision to acquit two Indian nationals who were accused of providing hand-drawn maps to the 10 gunmen. Kasab, who has not attended the appeal for security reasons but has been able to follow proceedings via video link, looked at the floor as the judgment was handed down, news channel NDTV said. “Harsh penalty of death is required in some cases, especially this one, and the court would be sending a wrong signal to society if any penalty less than death is given,” judges Ranjana Desai and R.V. BERLIN – Chancellor Angela Merkel suffered an election thrashing in Hamburg, with support for her party collapsing in Germany’s second city at the start of a crunch political year. The centre-left Social Democrats (SPD) triumphed with just shy of 48.3 percent of the vote in the northern city state, while Merkel’s Christian Democrats (CDU) crashed to just 21.9 percent, preliminary results showed. In the last election in Hamburg in 2008, the centre-right CDU’s share of the vote was about double Sunday’s score at 42.6 percent, while the SPD was on just 34.1 percent. The result ends almost a decade of CDU rule in the Hamburg, Germany biggest port, and will make life harder for Merkel in the capital Berlin. But support for the SPD nationally is nowhere near what it is in Hamburg. “This is a painful day for the CDU in Hamburg,” outgoing CDU mayor Christoph Ahlhaus said, calling the result a “bitter defeat”. Once the SPD has formally formed a government, the result gives the opposition firm control of the federal upper house in Berlin, the Bundesrat, constricting Merkel’s ability to push

through legislation. The election will return the SPD to power in a city that has traditionally been a centre-left bastion. “This was a historic result, not just for us, but also for others,” a beaming SPD chief Sigmar Gabriel said. Future SPD mayor Olaf Scholz, a 52-year-old former federal labour minister, called the election outcome “very, very impressive”. Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

HANOI – The captain and engineer of a Vietnamese tour boat that sank last week killing 12 people could face jail terms after being charged with safety violations, a senior local official said Monday. Captain Nguyen Van Minh, 22, and chief engineer Do Van Thang, 27, were arrested Saturday on criminal charges of violating water traffic safety rules, said Dang Duy Hau, deputy chairman of the Quang Ninh provincial government. They could face several years in jail if convicted.

MOGADISHU, Somalia – A Somali police officer says a suicide bomber has detonated an explosives-laden car at a police station in the capital and killed at least five people. Officer Mohamed Abdi says it was a powerful explosion that ripped its victims apart.

The dead, mostly foreign tourists in their 20s, were killed when their boat “Dream Voyage” suddenly sank as they slept in Halong Bay, one of the country’s most popular attractions. The boat took on water so fast that sleeping passengers had almost no time to escape the torrent that filled their cabins, said one of the nine tourists who escaped with their lives. Six crewmen also survived. The most likely cause of the accident was water leakage resulting from human error, Hau said. Normally a valve and pump ensure removal of any water that enters the boat while it moves. But the boat was stationary at the time of the accident, meaning the crew possibly forgot to close the valve, he said, emphasising that this was not the final conclusion.

The captain and engineer were still being questioned and the boat remained under investigation, Hau said. “At the time of the accident the weather was good so all outside impacts are excluded,” he added. A tourism official has called it the worst-ever tourist accident in Vietnam, which began opening to the outside world 25 years ago. A source familiar with marine practices in Halong Bay told AFP the latest accident did not come as a surprise. The design of the vessels — most of which are wooden and resemble Chinese-style junks — makes them prone to overturning in storms. Most Merapi temporary shelters still unfinished Antara

SLEMAN - Although three months have passed since the devastating eruptions of Mount Merapi, most of the temporary shelters the government has promised to build for displaced victims are not yet ready for occupation, according to officials. “Many of the shelters have already been built but cannot yet be occupied due to problems related to the supporting infrastructure,” said Sleman District Chief Sri Purnomo to newsmen when he accompanied Yogyakarta Governor Sri Sultan Hamengkubowono X on a visit to shelters at Banjarsari, Glagaharjo and Cangkringan, on Saturday. with the shelters which made them unfit for occupation are that there are not electricity and clean water facilities. Electricity network has not been able to reach the areas where the shelters constructed due to various problems, including the difficulty with erecting the cable lines. In addition, many shelters do not have near water sources for clean water whereas their locations are mostly in high altitude making it difficult to dig up artesian wells. Also, the choice of locations has been other problems as not many locations are wide enough to construct the shelters. Sanitation facilities such as sewerages for waste water have not yet been constructed. Water floods the areas where the shelters stand

The minister said the government would not stop the import of foreign movies, but it still discussing the taxation of national and foreign movies. “It is still being discussed and thus it should not be opposed,” the minister said. He added that the government was still seeking the most reasonable amount of tax on national and foreign movies. “So the policy is not intended stop the import of foreign movies but to find the most reasonable amount of taxes,” the minister said.

JAKARTA - Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Djoko Suyanto said Indonesian military data were not missing as previously reported to have been stolen in the Lotte Hotel in South Korea. “The thing that was missing was the Trade Minister`s laptop,” Djoko Suyanto said here Monday. The laptop contained data of six corridor economic cooperation between Indonesia and South Korea that would be developed to boost Indonesia‘s economic development, Djoko said. Indonesia had previously discussed a similar cooperation with Japan and India, he said. Djoko said, Defense Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro, was not bringing any data about Indonesian Military to South Korea. “Therefore, no data of Indonesian Military were missing,” Djoko said. “I have no idea whether the data of the cooperation has been taken or not,” Djoko said responding to a question about suspected economic intelligence. Two men and a woman who looked like Asians were suspected as the burglars who broke into a VIP room where the Indonesian delegate was staying on 19th floor. According to a Namdaeum Police Officer, when the incident happened on Wednesday evening (Feb 16), the internal security guards were not guarding in the hotel as they were with the delegation outside the hotel. The police had received a report from an Indonesian delegate saying the three suspects had copied the data into a USB from the laptop and left. Bali Today PHDI reminds hotel circles

Nyepi package should not be excessive Denpasar (Bali Post)—

It has become a tradition among the hotel circles in Bali to take advantage of Nyepi celebration as one of the attractions to increase the hotel occupancy. Even, the hotels offer a kind of Nyepi package coming with a number of special entertainments. In response to that matter, the Chairman of the Hindu Dharma Council of Indonesia (PHDI) of Bali Province, IGN Sudiana, appealed the hotel management to arrange the Nyepi package politely and not to organize it excessively as it could potentially reduce the solemnity of the Hindus in implementing their abstinence or beratha penyepian. “We do expect the hotel could set up the Nyepi package politely. It would be very wise if the hotels do not offer any entertainment to their guests coinciding with the Nyepi Day,” said Sudiana to Bali Post, Sunday (Feb 20). Sudiana did not decline if the hotel circles recently seemed so passionate about designing Nyepi package. By and large, the package was designed for three days and two nights. It consisted of one day before Nyepi (Pengerupukan—Ed) until one day after Nyepi (Ngembak Nyepi). At the night of Pengerupukan, guests were usually invited to watch the attraction of ogoh-ogoh (papier mache demon) parade performed simultaneously throughout Bali. Meanwhile, right on Nyepi Day, some hotels added entertainment events such as family games as a decoy for the consumers. “Other than positively responded by foreign tourists, this Nyepi package also begins to be demanded by non-Hindu Balinese dwellers that are reluctant to spend the day within limited situation. Even, their presence in Bali during the Nyepi festivity could be going so unforgettable considering such an atmosphere could not be encountered in their home country or in other countries worldwide,” he reminded. So, what about the Hindu communities in Bali that are also getting interested to take the Nyepi package? Sudiana admitted he was deeply concerned if there were Hindus who deliberately pass the Nyepi Day in hotel for obtaining freedom. This lecturer of the

During the advance technology the Balinese people have produced several kind of bronze goods for ritual purpose such as kettledrums and for daily uses as well such as axes etc. Mastering the advance technology, Balinese people have succeeded to develop stone moulds in the village of Manuaba (Gianyar) for casting bronze kettledrum. The human-mask decoration, showed a remarkable similarities to the decorations of the huge kettledrums found in the village of Pejeng not so far of the east of Manuaba, but the stone moulds of Manuaba are small in its size. It should be noted here that bronze kettledrums were not only found in Bali, but also in Java, and Eastern Indonesian Island. Another bronze moulds made of clay were also found in West Java, but not for producing kettledrums, but for making spearheads, axes, etc. Regarding the hu-

man-mask decorations, which were founds on the kettledrums of Pejeng, on the stone moulds of Manuaba and on the number of the sarcophagi found in Bali, was regarded as symbol of the leader’s or the ancestor’s spirits. Having well developed social organization and cultural life before the arrival of Hinduism, have led the Balinese people successfully modified the new elements in accordance with their characters and became the new one beared Balinese identity. The wellknown king of Bali is a couple royal named king Udayana and his wife Gunapryadharmapati (c.10 century A.D), then succeeded by their families. During the ancient history of Bali, a number of temples were built nearly in the whole island. In these temple several kinds of historical remains were preserved e.g. statues, inscriptions etc. As the follower of Hinduism, Balinese people regard the temples including the remains in them as sacred monuments for worshiping the Hindu pantheons, the local deities and the ancestor’s spirit as well. This religious function was the responsibility of the Balinese people for keeping the monuments in well conditions and the welfare of the living society. In terms of its ingredient, the common satay used to fill in the oblation is that made of fork and chicken. Meanwhile, satay for consumption is not only made of chicken and fork. However, they creatively keep on finding out some other new ingredients. Up to these days, there are satays made of shrimp, snail, gourami and tuna. In harmony with the passage of time, local people progressively like the seafood (tuna) satay. Vendors of this satay can be found at roadsides, traditional markets and outermost courtyards or parking lots of temple during the temple anniversary. Even, in socio-religious activities like wedding or tooth filing ceremony, this satay is served to enrich the choice of the existing menus. This tuna satay delicacy takes advantage of the Balinese complete spices. They comprise 8 cloves of shallot, 3 cloves of garlic, small chili (2), large chili (1), grounded lemongrass (1 stalk), candlenut (2), pepper (1/ 2 tsp), coriander (1/2 tsp), ginger, galangal and turmeric (respectively 1 slice), palm sugar (1 tbsp), salt (1 tsp), squeeze of lime (1 tbsp) and 10 stalks of lemongrass for skewer. First of all, cleanse thoroughly the tuna flesh and then smear it by the squeeze of lime. Afterward, take aside for some 10 minutes and then grind it until tender. Secondly, prepare the spices by grinding them well, too. Take the tender tuna flesh, ground spices, salt, palm sugar and then mix them together evenly. Thirdly, take a stalk of lemongrass and some flesh batter. Twist the batter around the lemongrass skewer while pressing. Do the same until the batter runs out. Ultimately, cook the satay by grilling over a hot fire or charcoal embers. Attempt to make it cooked at all sides. Do not leave them unattended! WASHINGTON – Wall Street and the U.S. government statisticians seem to have very different views on the state of the economy. Earnings expectations have risen since October for companies in the Standard & Poor’s 500 index of big businesses, according to Thomson Reuters data. Lofty stock market indexes reflect that optimism. Private surveys of manufacturers and small businesses show both confidence and hiring intentions improving. Food companies and clothing retailers are pushing through price increases to try to offset rising commodity costs, a bold bet that consumer spending will be strong enough to accept higher prices. Yet the government’s most closely watched economic indicators — employment and gross domestic product — still show frustratingly sluggish growth. Steven Ricchiuto, chief economist for Mizuho Securities USA, said one reason for the disconnect between Wall Street and the government data is where companies are making their money. “Part of it is global versus domestic. If I’m doing well in my foreign business and that’s driving up my profitability.... then I’m a happy camper,” Ricchiuto said. The flip side is that many companies relying on domestic consumption are struggling, particularly services businesses such as restaurants, movie theaters or hair salons that have taken a hit as consumers pull back on discretionary spending.

Earnings results this week from some of the world’s biggest retailers will show just how well they managed costs — and consumer restraint — during the holiday shopping season. Expectations are low for WalMart, which is due to report their quarterly result on Tuesday. It has posted six consecutive declines in quarterly sales at its U.S. discount stores. Reports from Home Depot, Lowe’s and Sears will give insight into homeowners’ spending, an important measure when the housing market remains one of the biggest trouble spots for the U.S. economy. The S&P Case-Shiller report on house prices, slated for release on Tuesday, is expected to show prices fell yet again in December, according to a Reuters poll. A separate report on January existing home sales, coming a day later, is also expected to look weak. Those retail reports merit close scrutiny for clues on both consumer spending and inflation. It is no secret that commodity-sensitive companies are feeling the pinch from rising costs and are keen to share some of the burden with shoppers. Campbell Soup said on Friday it faced rising costs for grains, oils, sweeteners and steel cans, and expected “better pricing” in the second half of the year. Many other

companies have raised prices or found other ways to cut costs, perhaps by substituting cheaper fabrics for cotton or reducing the amount of food per package. Price pressures are beginning to show up in rising “core” inflation, which excludes food and energy prices. This has fueled some concern among economists and investors that price pressures are building too fast and will ultimately warrant Federal Reserve action. Dean Maki, an economist with Barclays Capital in New York, raised his 2011 CPI forecast on Friday to 2.3 percent from 1.8 percent, with his projection for core inflation rising to 1.3 percent, up from 1.1 percent. Investors will have a chance to hear from a half-dozen Fed officials this week, and will be listening for any indication that policymakers are reconsidering a plan to buy $600 billion in assets to support the economic recovery. Maki dismisses the view that the Fed will have to raise interest rates sooner than expected in order to tamp down price pressures. Even if core inflation hit his raised target, it would still be below the Fed’s perceived comfort zone, and with unemployment at 9 percent the economy has plenty of slack. “We believe the Fed welcomes the firming inflation backdrop,” Maki wrote in a note to clients.

BEIJING – A major Chinese telecoms equipment maker is scrapping its effort to acquire a U.S. computer company after a security panel refused to approve the deal. Huawei Technologies Ltd.’s bid to acquire 3Leaf Systems came amid concern in some countries about China’s growing economic might and political assertiveness. American critics said the deal might allow sensitive technology to be transferred to China’s military. Huawei had said it hoped to win White House approval despite the recommendation by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States to cancel the deal. But in a weekend announcement, Huawei reversed course and said it would withdraw its application. “This was a difficult decision, however we have decided to accept the recommendation of CFIUS to

withdraw our application to acquire specific assets of 3Leaf,” the company said in a brief statement. “The significant impact and attention that this transaction has caused were not what we intended. Rather, our intention was to go through all the procedures to reveal the truth about Huawei.” Huawei said it “will remain committed to long-term investment in the United States.” Huawei is one of the biggest makers of network switching gear and reported sales of $28 billion last year. It has struggled to gain a foothold in the United States against rivals such as Cisco Systems Inc. Huawei was founded by a former Chinese military officer, which has fueled speculation about its links to the People’s Liberation Army. The company says it is owned by its employees and has no military connection. Companies that fail to receive

STO C K H O L M – T h e world’s 100 largest arms dealers, excluding Chinese vendors, sold weapons for $401 billion in 2009, with US vendors remaining in first place, according to a report published Monday. “Despite the continuing global economic recession in 2009, the total arms sales of ... 100 of the world?s largest arms-producing companies increased by $14.8 billion from 2008,” the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) said in a statement upon releasing the report. That amounts to a year-onyear increase of eight percent, and “an increase of a total of 59 percent in real terms since 2002”, the think tank said, pointing out that 61.5 percent of all 2009 arms sales made by the top 100 arms dealers could be attributed to 45 companies based in the United States. “US government spending on military goods and services is a key factor in arms sales increases for US arms-producing and military services companies and for Western European companies with a foothold in the US arms and military services market,” SIPRI arms industry expert Susan Jackson explained in the statement. About 6,000 people died in drug-related violence in Ciudad Juarez in 2009 and 2010, making the city, located across from El Paso, Texas, one of the deadliest

in the world. The website of game developer Ubisoft Entertainment SA says the title is due for release this summer. Screen shots from the game show three characters armed with a pistol, an assault rifle and a shotgun ready to open fire on a city street. The game’s promotional slogan urges players, “Take justice into your own hands and experience the lawlessness of the modern Wild West.” No one answered a message left at the company’s San Francisco office. While graphics and gameplay have improved in the mobile space over the years, the new wave of smartphones and tablets will push the capabilities of these devices to the level of PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 — and beyond even the best iPhone 4 and iPad games that are currently on the market. “Video games drive the mobile business because they’re the best showcase of what these new devices can really do,” said Gonzague de Vallois, senior vice president of publishing at Gameloft, one of the largest mobile game companies in the world. “Our experience in the console market is helping us deliver quality titles to these new devices for the mobile market.” Gameloft, which previously supported Apple’s launch of iPhone and iPad with games, had franchises like Asphalt 6, Let’s Golf and NOVA running in autostereoscopic (glasses free) 3D at LG’s booth on the new Optimus 3D phone. And the publisher has recently started developing new games to run on NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 dual-core technology. The Tegra 2’s dedicated graphics processor also delivers 1080p HDTV playback of movies, TV shows and games. The United Nations has predicted the global population will reach seven billion this year, and climb to nine billion by 2050, “with almost all of the growth occurring in poor countries, particularly Africa and South Asia,” said John Bongaarts of the non-profit Population Council. To feed all those mouths, “we will need to produce as much food in the next 40 years as we have in the last 8,000,” said Jason Clay of the World Wildlife Fund at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). “By 2050 we will not have a planet left that is recognizable” if current trends continue, Clay said. The swelling population will exacerbate problems, such as resource depletion, said John Casterline, director of the Initiative in Population Research at Ohio State University. Contemporary society is increasingly vulnerable to space weather because of our dependence on satellite systems for synchronizing computers, airline navigation, telecommunications networks and other electronic devices. A potent solar storm could disrupt these technologies, scorch satellites, crash stock markets and cause power outages that last weeks or months, experts said Saturday at the American Association for the Advancement of Science’s annual meeting. The situation will only get more dire because the solar cycle is heading into a period of more intense activity in the coming 11 years. “This is not a matter of if, it is simply a matter of when and how big,” said National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration administrator Jane Lubchenco. “The last time we had a maximum in the solar cycle, about 10 years ago, the world was a very different place. Cell phones are now ubiquitous; they were certainly around (before) but we didn’t rely on them for so many different things,” she said. “Many things that we take for granted today are so much more prone to the process of space weather than was the case in the last solar maximum.” The experts admitted that currently, little that can be done to predict such a storm, much less shield the world’s electrical grid by doing anything other shutting off power to some of the vulnerable areas until the danger passes. “Please don’t panic,” said Stephan Lechner, director of the European Commission Joint Research Center, drawing laughter from the scientists and journalists in the audience. “Overreaction will

LONDON – Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger admitted he had never heard of the player whose late equaliser earned Leyton Orient of League One (third division) a 1-1 draw in the fifth round of the FA Cup. MANCHESTER, England – Malaysian cyclist Azizulhasni Awang staggered across the line at the Track World Cup with a bronze medal and a 7.8-inch piece of wood sticking through his left calf. Awang had surgery Sunday to remove the massive splinter, a day after a crash at the Manchester Velodrome sent it through his leg. Awang managed to remount his bike after the high-speed crash in Saturday’s Keirin final and stagger across the line to claim a bronze medal. He was rushed to the hospital but doctors waited until Sunday to carry out the procedure to remove the splinter. “Operation done. Splinter taken out cleanly,” Awang wrote

Trulli’s crash ends Lotus test early BARCELONA - Lotus has ended the final day of testing at Barcelona early after a car failure caused Jarno Trulli to crash this morning. The Italian lost control of the T128 in Campsa corner and hit the wall on the outside. The team has not confirmed the exact cause of the crash, but there was oil left on the circuit on the approach to the corner. “Unfortunately the day was cut short due to the accident,” chief technical officer Mike Gascoyne said. “It was not his fault - it was caused by a car failure. “We are missing a part we need to put the car back together, which meant we had to cut day four short.” Trulli said: “It’s obviously disappointing to have the test cut short like this, but these things happen in motor racing. We started the day well and until the accident happened I had picked up where I left off yesterday. “The car has good balance, pace we can build on and has the potential to help us take the fight to the midfield, so I’m leaving here feeling confident about the season

ahead and am looking forward to the next test, wherever that will be.” Gascoyne added that Lotus still had a productive week in Spain. “I still think there are a great deal of positives to take from the test, in terms of the pace of the car and the fact that we are on top of the reliability issues,” he said. “With that in mind we leave here with work to do but still on target for where we want to be.”

The Barcelona test concludes on Monday and sources indicate that it is impossible to delay making a call any longer because of the problems that could arise from uncertainty over whether to go to Bahrain or re-

main in Spain. Barcelona and Jerez are strong candidates to hold the replacement test and if Bahrain were dropped, teams would need to put into place alternative logistical plans as soon as the test finishes tomorrow. FOTA’s sporting group met on Friday night to put contingency plans into place, with Red Bull team principal Christian Horner saying

that the fate of the Bahrain test would be linked to any decision made on whether the grand prix would go ahead. “It’s obviously a really difficult situation in Bahrain, but we have complete trust in Bernie, FOM and the FIA to make the right decision,” said Horner on Friday. “They will only send us there if it is safe. “It would be a great shame to lose the race, but it’s not the teams’ decision - it’s down to the promoter. Bernie [Ecclestone] and the FIA will have much more information than us and we will trust their decisions.” AUTOSPORT understands that FOTA remains in contact with both Ecclestone and the FIA over the situation surrounding the Bahrain Grand Prix, meaning that although the test decision is likely to be made before a definitive choice has made on the F1 season opener, it is still likely to be guided partly by the commercial rights holder and the sport’s governing body.
