Mary Lambert was ‘last resort’ for ‘Same Love’

NEW YORK — In just six hours, Mary Lambert’s life changed drastically. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis had written and produced a song called “Same Love,” but they needed a special hook to finalize the emotional track. Like the rap duo, Lambert is from Seattle, though she had never met them before. “I was sort of a last resort,” said Lambert. “It was a match made in heaven.” Lambert was given “about two or three hours” to write the song’s chorus and then record it the same night in front of the breakthrough newcomers, who were instantly impressed by the soft singer. “They loved it. It was like this beautiful minute of silence after I sung the chorus,” she recalled. Others love it, too — including members of the Recording Academy. “Same Love” is nominated for the coveted song of the year at Sunday’s Grammy Awards, pitting the rap song supporting gay love and acceptance against No. 1 smashes from Katy Perry, Bruno Mars, Lorde and Pink. “Same Love” didn’t top the charts — it peaked at No. 11 on the

Hot 100 — but it sold 2 million copies and helped propel Macklemore & Ryan Lewis to even greater heights. The duo is nominated for seven awards, including best new artist and album of the year for “The Heist.” “We’d probably all agree that the nomination for song of the year for ‘Same Love’ in particular is quite meaningful for us, in what the song has turned out to be and (what it) means to people,” said Zach Quillen, manager for Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. “We regard it as our highest accomplishment,” he said. The Grammys also will celebrate another song about gay pride Sunday with Sara Bareilles’ “Brave,” which she wrote to encourage her friend to come

out of the closet. It’s nominated for best pop solo performance and appears on her third album, “The Blessed Unrest,” which is up for album of the year. Keith Caulfield, Billboard’s associate director of charts, said “Brave” could be getting a boost because of its Grammy nominations. “It does seem like something happened since the Grammy nominations came out in early December. You can probably tie the two together,” he said of “Brave,” which reached its peak at No. 26 last week. Lambert, who is openly gay, said having her first mainstream song be about a topic that’s close to home and nominated for a top Grammy at the same time is a blessing.

“He’s the master,” Sting said Monday, speaking by satellite from New York. “If I ever wanted to emulate a literary and literate songwriter, then Paul Simon would be the person I would go to.” They have started the process of selecting the set list for the tour, which opens Feb. 8 in Houston. Sting said Simon has asked him to sing “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” and Sting asked if they could include “America.” “Paul had a long partnership with Art Garfunkel for many, many years, and it’s not my job to impersonate Art,” Sting said. “He has one of the most iconic, beautiful voices in the history of rock ‘n’ roll. But my job is to interpret and honor the notes and the lyrics that have been written, and I will be me. But I’m delighted to sing songs from that canon.” Simon is eager to sing Sting’s songs “Fields of Gold” and “Fragile.” “I think the gentler side of my repertoire interests him,” Sting told the Television Critics Association while promoting his PBS special, “Sting: The Last Ship,” airing Feb. 21 on “Great Performances.” The two men, separated by a 10-year age difference, first sang together at a charity benefit in New York last year. Sting said he was surprised by how well his voice blended with that of the 72year-old Simon.

The burglary to the automated teller machine (ATM) reoccurred in Denpasar. Recently, the ATM of Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) located on Jalan Cokroaminoto, precisely in front of Kimia Farma Pharmacy, West Denpasar, was burglarized, Monday (Jan 20). Luckily, the culprit failed to carry off hundreds of millions stored in the ATM. The burglary case was being investigated by the officers of West Denpasar Police assisted by Denpasar Police.

Information at the scene mentioned the ATM burglary was just known around 08:00 a.m. At that time, a customer was about to withdraw money at the ATM. Another witness who was sweeping in the courtyard of Kimia Farma Pharmacy told if the ATM was out of order. “The first person knowing it was the cleaning service officer that would like to clean up the ATM room. He is Arif Frangki, 18,” said one of the officers when met at the scene last Monday. Knowing it, the witness immediately reported the incident to the bank. Furthermore, the report was forwarded to West Denpasar Police. A number of police officers of West Denpasar Police immediately came down to the scene. Even, Deputy Chief of West Denpasar Police, I Gusti Kade Budi Harryarsana also came to the scene. To facilitate the investigation at the scene, the officers set

up police line. “The identification team of Denpasar Police has made crime scene investigation,” he said while asking not to be named in the paper. Apparently, he said, the culprit failed to carry off the cash in the machine because two safe deposit boxes containing IDR 400 million remained intact. However, to ascertain, at that time PT Kejar directly took the money safe. Afterward, the money was counted. Meanwhile, police had not received a report from the BRI management about the losses suffered. Police merely conducted a crime scene, examined witnesses and checked the CCTV footage. Deputy Chief of Denpasar Police Harryarsana when met at the scene claimed that the case was being explored. Other information received told if the money worth IDR 400 million was just topped up two days before the incident. “It was just topped up on January 18, 2014 with the amount of IDR 400 million,” said one of the PT Kejar officers while taking the remaining money. Former Regent of Tabanan, Adi Wiryatama, has now to deal with the Bali Police. He was reported by I Made Sarja alias Mangku Sarja to Directorate of Bali Police General Criminal Detective as alleged to have embezzled 15 land certificates. Other than Wiryatama, the victim also reported the notary I Ketut Nuridja assessed to get involved in the case. Previously, the ownership of the land certificate on behalf of the victim was then changed to be on behalf of Wiryatama. Spokesperson of Bali Police, Hariadi, claimed on Monday (Jan 20) that his party needed to see the case details to the Directorate of Bali Police General Criminal Detective because the report numbered LP/497/IX/2013/SPKT was made on September 2, 2013. “We need to look at it first and make coordination with the General Criminal Detective because the report has been a little longer,” said the former Director of Traffic Affairs of the Central Sulawesi Police when asked for his confirmation by reporters last Monday. Meanwhile, according to the victim (Mangku Sarja—Ed), the allegations of land certificate fraud was directed at two defendants because he considered there was something wrong. A total of 15 land certificates with an area of 2.5 hectares and was worth IDR 40 billion suddenly changed in terms of ownership without his knowledge. “The 15 land certificates were taken by my son named Made Harum Bawa. Then, they were given to Wiryatama through the notary,” he explained last Monday. When it was taken by his son, the victim did not know at all. In other words, his son stole the certificates. Later on, it was known if the certificates were used as collateral by his son due to debts valued at IDR 3 billion. Knowing this, the victim went straight to the notary and asked where the certificates were. However, he did not get clear answer. Even, the notary claimed that he would make coordination with Wiryatama. In short, the land certificates had change ownership to be on behalf of Wiryatama. Actually, there was no land sale agreement. Even if his son had a debt worth IDR 3 billion, one certificate only was worth more than IDR 3 billion. In August 2013, together with his legal counsel, Zulfikar Ramly, Mangku Sarja came to the office of National Land Agency (BPN) in Tabanan to block before the ownership was changed. However, the blocking was considered to have never happened. After the certificate underwent a change of ownership, the victim reported the case to Bali Police. Even, so far, of the 15 certificates, a total of 12 copies had been confiscated by Bali Police as evidence. Not only that, the inquiry had also been upgraded to investigation. However, the investigator had not yet to determine a suspect. “Moreover, the concerned has also been examined by investigator,” he said. (kmb21)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

BEIJING — The number of online microblog users in China dropped by more than 27.8 million last year, marking the first major decline in popularity of a social media genre that has offered a way to share unfiltered information in a country with strict controls. The drop comes amid a crackdown on microblogs deemed sensitive by government authorities and new controls on what can be posted and reposted, and reflects an overall decline in use of traditional social media in China that once had explosive growth. At the same time, Chinese Web users are migrating to cellphone-based instant messaging services, giving a huge boost to the mobile applications that have increasingly incorporated social media functions, including microblog-like features. The China Internet Network Information Center said in an annual report Thursday that there were 281 million users of Twitter-like microblogs such as Sina Weibo at the end of 2013, down 9 percent from the previous year. It also reported an overall decline in users of social media as a percentage of the entire population of Internet users. “I think there are several reasons, with the crackdown being one,” said Willy Lam, a political analyst at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. “People don’t want to get into trouble, and they have found other means of communications.” One prominent alternative is WeChat, a mobile instant-messaging service that has risen in popularity since 2012 and has threatened the dominance of Sina Weibo in information sharing. Statistics from the information center show that mobile instantmessaging services experienced rapid growth in 2013, adding 78.6 million users, or 22.3 percent. The field leader is WeChat, which allows users to share information within circles of friends or open a public account that others can subscribe to, similar to the Twitter feature of having followers, but without a word limit. The decline in online social media, especially in microblogging — known in Chinese as weibo — was palpable last year, following a heavy-handed government campaign against what it considered rumors, negativity and unruliness in online discourse. A new legal interpretation allows the government to jail microbloggers who post false information that has been reposted 500 times or viewed 5,000 times.

UNITED NATIONS — Delaying action on global warming will only increase the costs and reduce the options for dealing with the worst effects of climate change, according to a draft report by U.N. experts. The final draft of the report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, obtained Thursday by The Associated Press, says that global warming will continue to increase unless countries shift quickly to clean energy and cut emissions. It said that despite national policies and international efforts aimed at mitigating climate change, emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases that are warming the planet grew 2.2 percent per year on average between 2000 and 2010, compared to 1.3 percent per year from 1970 to 2000. The two main drivers for the increasing emissions are economic growth, which has risen sharply, and population growth, which has remained roughly steady, the report said. The largest contributor to global emissions results from the burning of oil and coal — and the draft report said its contribution is expected to rise. Unless “explicit efforts” are made to reduce greenhouse

gas emissions, the experts warned that increased conservation and efficiency will not be sufficient to counter their rise. With increasing demand for energy and the growing use of coal to generate electricity, the experts said emissions from the sector are projected to double or triple by 2050 from the level in 2010 unless improvements in clean energy are “significantly accelerated.” International climate negotiators agreed at the 2009 U.N. climate change conference in Copenhagen that global warming this century must increase by less than 2 degrees (1.1 degree Celsius) from now to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. Scientists say that target requires

atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas, to stay below 530 parts per million. The level surpassed 400 parts per million briefly in the spring, but annually it is still barely below 400. The report said the majority of scenarios to stay below 530 parts per million throughout the 21st century would require a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions between 40 percent and 70 percent of 2010 levels by 2050. The experts said this will require new patterns of investment and a transformation into a low-carbon economy. The global total annual investment in the energy system is presently about $1.2 trillion, it said.

Frenchman may face death for drugs smuggling Agence France-Presse

DENPASAR - A Frenchman has been arrested for trying to smuggle more than $500,000 worth of crystal methamphetamine into the Indonesian resort island of Bali, an offence punishable by death, an official said Monday. Francois Giuily, 48, was detained Sunday at Ngurah Rai airport with more than three kilograms (6.8 pounds) of the drug hidden in plastic bags in his suitcase lining. Airport customs chief I Made Wijaya said the drugs had a street value of $511,280. Giuily could face the death penalty under Indonesia’s tough anti-narcotics laws as well as a 10 billion rupiah ($830,000) fine, he said. Several foreign nationals are on death row for drug-related offences in Indonesia. British grandmother Lindsay Sandiford was sentenced to death in January last year after being found with $2.4 million worth of cocaine in her luggage as she arrived on Bali. The latest arrest came as another French national, 40-year-old Michael Blanc, was freed Monday on parole from an Indonesian jail more than 14 years after he was caught smuggling drugs into Bali. The main problem experienced by Denpasar as a big city is waste. The waste handling cannot be resolved properly if it is only carried out by the government. Therefore, at the moment Denpasar municipality encourages residents to participate in making a clean city. This effort will be started in the moment of the 226th anniversary of Denpasar falling in this February as milestone of the movement. It was affirmed by Regional Secretary of Denpasar, AAN Rai Iswara, when receiving the social visit of the ranks of Bali Post in his office on Monday (Jan 20). Rai Iswara accompanied by the Assistant Government I Ketut Mister recognized that it was not enough to create the urban sanitation when only relying on the government. Participation of all societal components and private sector should also be involved. “We begin to encourage public participation in the sanitation program,” said Rai Iswara. Kindergarten remains apprehensive

Condition of kindergarten in Gianyar County remains poor. It was the finding of the Indonesian Kindergarten Organizer Association (GOPTKI) of Gianyar County while making social activities and conferment of educational toys (APE) to two kindergartens in Gianyar. The kindergartens visited and getting assistance last Saturday (Jan 18) included the Santi Yasa Kindergarten at Petak Kaja, Asrama Kindergarten at Pejeng Kelod, Lila Kumara Kindergarten at Pejeng Kangin and Ratna Kumara Kindergarten at Medahan village. Seeing such apprehensive condition, either due to the room condition and narrow space for a kindergarten, Chairperson of the GOPTKI Gianyar, Mrs. Ambari Gaga Adi Saputra asked the Chairperson of the GOPTKI in each subdistrict, in this case held by the spouse of subdistrict head secretary and the Advisor to GOPTKI held by the spouse of subdistrict head, to identify all the problems faced by the kindergartens in their area. Furthermore, it should be coordinated with leadership of the GOPTKI in county level to find out a solution, she said. Such a curt statement was delivered after having a closer look at the problems faced by kindergarten teachers in performing their duties. As experienced by the Santi Yasa Kindergarten at Petak Kaja, the principal Ni Ketut Budiasih revealed that her party lacked of land for outdoor educative games, while her party only had a swing and rope game. Related to teaching staff, her party only had internship teacher. Similar problem was also faced by Ratna Kumala Kindergarten at Medahan village, Blahbatuh. Although the room and environment of the kindergarten had been clean and nicely arranged, the roof of its classroom leaked so during the rainy season the water flooded its classrooms. In addition, during its visit the GOPTKI reminded the teachers in order they did not impose the kindergarten students to learn to read and count first. It was enough to be given an introduction course. Kindergarten was the time to play and performing orientation with peers or the environment. “I do realize the task of kindergarten teachers is very hard and am very grateful for all the devotion extended,” she said. After disappearing for a day, a fisherman found alive

A fisherman having disappeared for a day was finally found on Sunday (Jan 19) around 10:00 a.m. on the shore of Penuktukan village, Tejakula subdistrict. The fisherman was Gede Konten, 44, a resident of Sukadarma hamlet, Tajakula village, Tejakula subdistrict. Konten who had reportedly drowned while fishing at sea was found in good condition by Gede Nadi, a resident of the same village. Information collected in the field last Sunday told that villagers were surprised due the disappearance of Konten from Friday (Jan 17). Families and residents had attempted to conduct a search, but he could not be found. His family then reported the incident to police and local village official. Finally, his boat was hit by waves amid the ocean and drowned. Fortunately, the victim was found alive and has been submitted to his family members,” he said. marine weather looked normal and the waves were sloping. Around 10:00 a.m. when he was absorbed in catching fish, suddenly strong winds accompanied by high waves came. Seeing such condition, he attempted to return to mainland. But before starting the boat engine, a large wave suddenly rolled up to the boat upside down. He tried to swim and save himself by turning the boat, but the waves continued to roll until he finally stranded on the beach of Penuktukan. “At that time, the weather was fine but when arriving amid the ocean strong winds and big waves came. Kiev - Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych on Monday warned bloody clashes between protesters and police threatened all of Ukraine as new fighting rocked the capital Kiev. The clashes, the worst in Kiev in recent times, marked a spiralling of tensions after two months of demonstrations against Yanukovych’s refusal to sign a pact for closer integration with the EU. Amid growing fears the police could act to violently disperse the protest, Ukraine’s Prosecutor General Viktor Pshonka warned protesters to halt “mass rioting”, describing it as a crime against the state. In a second day of clashes after 200 were injured in Sunday’s fighting, thousands of Ukrainians braved temperatures of minus 10 degrees Celsius (14 degrees Fahrenheit) to take part in the standoff with police. In the epicentre of the clashes outside the entrance to the iconic Dynamo Kiev football stadium in central Kiev, both sides hunkered down behind barricades. The protesters lobbed stones dug up from the cobbled road, flung Molotov cocktails and threw fireworks over a 20-metre (65-foot) noman’s land at police lines. Police responded by throwing stun grenades and occasionally using rubber bullets and tear gas. “I am convinced that such phenomena are a threat not only to the public in Kiev but all of Ukraine,” Yanukovych said in an address to the nation broadcast on state TV. “I urge dialogue, compromise and calm in our native land,” he said in his first public

Business activity is picking up but the misery of unemployment continues to pile up. “We continue to be on an upward trajectory in terms of unemployment in the world,” Guy Ryder, the UN labour agency’s director general, told reporters. “What is perhaps equally concerning is that, on current trends, and notwithstanding the modest recovery in growth that we are seeing, unemployment will continue to increase in coming years,” Ryder said as he released the ILO’s annual

employment report. By 2018, about 215 million people worldwide are expected to be unemployed, according to the ILO. “At current rates of growth, we’re simply not able to produce any improvement in these figures. Indeed, they’re going to get worse,” Ryder said. “We believe that employment needs to be put at the centre of international policy-making,” he underlined. “There is a clear linkage between

Malaysia eases auto curbs to woo foreign makers

KUALA LUMPUR \ Malaysia unveiled a new auto policy Monday, offering incentives and easing curbs on the production of small, energyefficient cars to vie for investment with neighboring rivals Thailand and Indonesia. Trade Minister Mustapa Mohamad said new manufacturing licenses will be issued for carmakers producing green vehicles. It is a significant change in policy as the government previously only issued new manufacturing licenses for vehicles with engine size of 1.8 liters and above to protect national car makers Proton and Perodua. Mustapa said the new auto policy aims to raise total industry production to 1.25 million vehicles and exports to 250,000 vehicles by 2020. Last year, Malaysia’s vehicle production was around 570,000 vehicles and exports at 20,000. That was dwarfed by Thailand which makes more than 2 million vehicles a year and by Indonesia with annual production exceeding 1 million. The policy also aims to double exports of auto parts and components to 10 billion ringgit ($3 billion) by 2020, Mustapa said. “We want to promote a competitive and sustainable domestic automotive industry. The most important objective is to make Malaysia a regional auto hub for energy efficient vehicles, including the production of hybrids and

electric vehicles,” he told a news conference. Malaysia is trying to play catch up with its neighbors. Thailand has a lead with its “Eco Car” program launched five years ago while Indonesia introduced its “Green Car” scheme last year, both focusing on small, fuel efficient cars. Mustapa said incentives including tax rebates and grants will be offered to manufacturers based on their investment. More than 2 billion ringgit ($603 million) in soft loans will also be offered to promote the development of energy efficient vehicles, he said. He said there will be no limit on foreign ownership of ventures under the green car program. “You have this (program) in Indonesia and Thailand too, but we believe ours is more comprehensive. We will open up the whole car market for energy efficient vehicles,” he said. OMAHA, Nebraska - Explosions in two U.S. states, one at an animal feed plant in Nebraska and another at a steel plant in Oklahoma, killed at least four people and injured almost a dozen on Monday, authorities said. An explosion and fire flattened part of an animal feed plant in Omaha, Nebraska, killing two people and injuring at least 10 others, authorities said. In the Omaha incident, about 38 employees were working at the International Nutrition plant at midmorning when there was an explosion and part of the building collapsed, interim Fire Chief Bernard Kanger told a news conference. One body has been recovered and the other is expected to be recovered on Tuesday from the industrial accident, Kanger said. Of the 10 injured, four were in critical condition, he said. All employees have been accounted for, but authorities are not sure if there were any visitors in the plant, he said. In a separate incident, two workers likely “burned to death” when a furnace exploded at about 4 p.m. local time at an Oklahoma steel plant, a Marshall County Sheriff’s Office dispatcher said. A third person was injured at Mid American Steel and Wire in Madill, Oklahoma, but treated for burns and released from a local hospital, said Madill Fire Department Fire Chief Keith Pruitt. The identities of those killed and injured were not immediately known, the officials said. The plant, which was established in 2004, according to its website, did not respond to requests for comment. It is about 120 miles southeast of Oklahoma City. Officials said investigations into the causes of both explosions and the fire would take days, if not weeks. In the Omaha, Nebraska incident, Forklift operator Kendrick Houston told the Omaha World-Herald newspaper he was returning to work from a break when the floor began to tremble. “There was this real loud crackling sound and the lights went off,” Houston was quoted as saying on the paper’s website. “I saw a spark and there was a big ball of flame coming from the southwest corner of the building.” Houston said he fled the building. HONG KONG - Police at Hong Kong airport Monday arrested a woman who allegedly tortured two Indonesian domestic helpers, a day after thousands staged a march to call for better migrant worker rights in the city. The unnamed woman, a 44-year-old housewife alleged to have beaten domestic helper Erwiana Sulistyaningsih and another maid, was arrested at the city’s Chek Lap Kok airport as she attempted to board a flight to Thailand. “At about 4 o’clock today, Hong Kong police arrested a housewife of age 44. She is believed to be (involved) in connection with Erwiana’s case and another abuse on an Indonesian domestic helper in Hong Kong,” police officer Chan Wai-man told reporters some five hours after police detained the woman. “She was trying to leave Hong Kong for Thailand,” he added. Sulistyaningsih, 22, was reportedly abused over a period of eight months while employed by the woman. Media reports said she was unable to walk due to her injuries when she flew home from the southern Chinese city this month. Her ordeal sparked an outcry among domestic helpers and many locals, renewing concerns about the treatment of maids in the city. The arrest came as police investigators on Monday travelled to Indonesia to interview the young maid. They visited Sulistyaningsih in hospital in Sragen on the main island of Java in the evening and said they planned to take a formal statement later. “All the information will be passed back to Hong Kong,” police official Chung Chi-ming told reporters. “She is also willing to go back to Hong Kong to assist in our investigation after her recovery,” he said, adding that police took a “very serious” view of the case. SAO PAULO - The venue that will stage the opening World Cup game in Brazil in June is almost complete, officials said on Monday, even though work has not restarted on the collapsed roof that killed two workers in November. “The stadium is 97 percent ready,” said Andres Sanchez, the former Corinthians president who is overseeing construction of the Arena Corinthians. “We have some things pending because of the accident but we’ve got the all-clear and by the end of the month they will remove the damaged piece. We will hand the stadium over by April 15.” World soccer’s ruling body FIFA said on Monday it was delighted with the progress made although secretary general Jerome Valcke pointed out the stadium was supposed to be ready last month. “We are very happy with what we’ve seen today,” added Valcke. “A lot of work has been done, a lot of work has still to be done where the accident took place, but we are very confident that all is on track.” The stadium on the outskirts of Sao Paulo is one of the most expensive of the 12 World Cup venues and was one of the last to get started.
