Girl group Fifth Harmony down to four as Cabello goes solo
NEW YORK - Girl group Fifth Harmony has become four. The pop group formed out of U.S. talent show “The X Factor” in 2012 said on Monday that Camila Cabello was leaving the quintet but that the band would be moving ahead. Cabello, 19, said she was launching a solo career, a move she had discussed at length with the other four young women. “After four and a half years of being together, we have been informed via her representatives that Camila has decided to leave Fifth Harmony. We wish her well,” the remaining members of the group said in a posting on Instagram. “We are excited to announce that we will be moving forward with the four of us - Ally Brooke, Normani Kordei, Dinah Jane and Lauren Jau-
regui - for our fans, “ the statement added, saying the name of the band would remain the same. Cabello’s departure followed Fifth Harmony’s last scheduled performance of the year at the iHeart Radio Jingle Ball tour in Florida on Sunday. Like British boy band One Direction, Fifth Harmony was put together by record producer Simon Cowell after each girl auditioned as solo artists for his TV talent show “The X Factor.” Although they didn’t win, they
went on to become the show’s most successful product, with hits like “Worth It” and “Work from Home” that led to 10 million in record sales and accolades that included three MTV Video Music Awards, an American Music award and seven Teen Choice Awards. The war, which has killed more than 300,000 people and created a power vacuum exploited by Islamic State, reached a potential turning point last week when Syrian forces ended rebel resistance in the northern city of Aleppo. Turkey identified the killer as 22-year-old Mevlut Mert Altintas, who had worked for the Ankara riot police for 2-1/2 years. Altintas, who also shouted slogans associated with Islamist militancy after shooting ambassador Andrey Karlov, was killed minutes later by members of Turkey’s special forces. His mother, father, sister and two other relatives were held in the western province of Aydin, while his flatmate in Ankara was also detained, the state-run Anadolu agency said.
One senior Turkish security official said investigators were focusing on whether Altintas had links to the U.S.-based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen, who Ankara blames for a failed July coup. Gulen has denied responsibility for the coup and Monday’s attack and has condemned both events. The slogans that Altintas shouted, which were captured on video and circulated widely on social media, suggested he was aligned to a radical Islamist ideology, rather than that of Gulen, who preaches a message of interfaith dialogue. “Don’t forget Aleppo, don’t forget Syria. You will not be able to feel safe for as long as our districts are not safe. Only death can take me from here,” he shouted in Turkish.
Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday he and Russia’s Vladimir Putin had agreed in a telephone call that their cooperation in fighting terrorism should be even stronger after the killing. DENPASAR - The success of Denpasar in handling rabies case is quite brilliant. Now, the case has been successfully resolved. Moreover, the case has reached zero percent. However, it is not the same as what happens to the dengue fever case. This case still becomes a threat to residents of Denpasar. Moreover, in the current transitional season, the threat to rising number of dengue cases comes back and is getting greater. Therefore, a number of efforts have been intensified to suppress dengue cases. Moreover, it is currently designed so that each household can have a larva monitoring officer. Mayor of Denpasar Mayor, I.B. Rai Dharmawijaya Mantra, confirmed it on Sunday (Dec. 18) after attending the clean-up action in North Denpasar. The environmental clean-up activity was attended by the Regional Secretary of Denpasar AAN Rai Iswara, Chairman of Commission I of the Denpasar House of Representatives Ketut Suteja Kumara, military, police and the agency heads in the circle of the Denpasar municipality, subdistrict head of North Denpasar Nyoman Lodera and village officials mingling with local community. Rai Mantra continuously urged people to maintain sanitation and health independently starting from
each individual. He considered that sanitation is a necessity in keeping the environment healthy. On that account, the community must begin to care about the environmental sanitation. According to Rai Mantra, by keeping the environmental sanitation, people are expected to begin carrying out the movement of one house one larva monitoring officer in the effort to prevent dengue cases. He said that dengue cases lately emerged again, though Denpasar is recorded as the lowest in terms of dengue cases in the Bali Province. However, if people do not care about their environmental sanitation the dengue cases would increase. “We invite the community to care, do not just wait for fogging but start to notice the surrounding environment that is vulnerable to becoming the breeding area of mosquitoes. We also provide free abate powder that can be obtained in the nearest health center,” said Rai Mantra.

Since the rabies cases in Denpasar have reached zero percent, Rai Mantra hoped to reduce the number of dengue fever and make the region of Denpasar free from larvae and mosquito breeding. To that end, Rai Mantra made independent larvae monitoring program or a movement of one house one monitoring officer denoting the program of the government of Denpasar. In other words, every house has one independent larvae monitoring. In addition, Rai Mantra invited residents to perform administration of abate powder in bulk to avoid the occurrence of dengue cases. “This is one of the ways to suppress dengue cases in the city of Denpasar. If all people do it properly, I am confident the number of dengue outbreaks can be suppressed. So, it just needs to provide counseling and the way to overcome it and when to implement it,” explained Rai Mantra. Chief of Taman Indah Nangka neighborhood, I Made Suantina, said that this activity is a measure to increase the mutual cooperation as well as to motivate people so that they can improve sanitation of their respective environment having a total of 72 houses. TABANAN - Recent extreme weather claimed some other casualties. Three foreign travelers from China were swept away by sea currents while swimming on Pasut Beach, Kerambitan, Monday (Dec. 19). As a result, one person was still missing, while two others survived. As the information compiled, the missing victim swept away on Pasut Beach is named Xie Zihao, 20. The victim is known to stay at Villa Fulman along with the two companions who also came from China. Chairman of the Indonesia fishermen association (HNSI) of Tabanan, Ketut Arsana Yasa, said that the incident happened around 17:12. At that time, the victim along with two companions was swimming by using a short surfboard located precisely 200 meters away from their villa. Suddenly the three victims were swept away. Two of his companions managed to escape while the victim who cannot swim disappeared as swept away by sea currents. The search process for the victim was quite difficult due to winds accompanied with heavy rain flushing almost all areas of Tabanan. “Two people managed to escape, while one person is still missing, all the three are men,” he said. The search process was carried out until the night with the involvement of the national SAR agency, Tabanan Police and local communities. (kmb28)
Kesbangpol browses foreign mass organization opened in Bali
DENPASAR - President has issued Government Regulation No.59/2016 which essentially allows foreign citizens to establish mass organizations in Indonesia. On the Island of Bali, the national unity and political agency (Kesbangpol) of Bali has not found any foreigners establishing such mass organizations. However, it remains to trace foreign organizations denoting the branch from the other regions. “So far, we have not found any foreigners in Bali establishing a mass organization, but in the other regions have done. So, I’d just like to monitor it first whether they have opened branches in Bali,” said the Head of the Kesbangpol Bali, I Gede Putu Jaya Suartama, when confirmed via telephone, Monday (Dec. 19). According to him, any organization of foreigners wishing to open a branch in Bali should report to the Kesbangpol. It must present some evidences if the organization has been already registered and obtained a formal decision from the Ministry of Law and Human Rights as well as the Ministry of the Interior. If they are found not reporting, they will be penalized for it. “We have to take measures for this. Governor has the authority through the Kesbangpol to take coordinating measures by summoning the immigration and the law and human rights agency. In terms of the execution, we’ll submit it to police and the prosecutor’s office,” he explained. Jaya added that the presence of foreign mass organizations will certainly have an impact on Bali as an international tourist destination. The impact should be closely watched. “As Indonesian citizen and as human being, suspecting is still okay. We will observe their movement and activities,” he added. (kmb32)

Czechs open production of batteries based on nanotechnology
PRAGUE - A Czech company opened on Monday a production line for batteries based on nanotechnology, which uses tiny parts invisible to human eyes. The batteries are touted as potentially more efficient, longer-lasting, cheaper, lighter and above all safer. The automatic line will operate for several months to get all necessary certifications. Then, Prague-based company HE3DA said Monday it is ready to launch other lines in a new plant built in eastern Czech Republic, and at a factory in Slovakia. Nanotechnology can increase the size and surface of batteries electrodes, making them sponge-like so that they can absorb more energy during charging and ultimately increas-
ing the energy storage capacity. There’s an appetite for batteries that would hold more energy, last longer, be cheaper and safer, a crucial step key for the development and success of many technologies, from solar and wind energy to electric cars. Several ways are being explored by researchers around the globe on how to achieve that. Tesla Motors has also been building a “gigafactory” to produce conventional
lithium-ion batteries for use in its electric cars and potentially to store electricity for homes. HE3DA president Jan Prochazka said he was confident his invention provides a solution other current products can’t offer. “We don’t want to compete with anyone on the market,” Prochazka said. “We’re building a new market.” His battery is designed to store energy from renewable electric sources. Next planned type will be suitable for electric cars. The price has not been set yet but it is supposed to be about a half of the cost of current lithium batteries of the same capacity. (ap)

Toyota unlocks its engine technology, could sell to rivals
TOKYO - Long guarded about what was beneath the hood of its pioneering Prius cars, Toyota Motor Corp plans to open up its powertrain technology to rivals, hoping this will boost sales and speed up the industry’s shift to lower-emission vehicles. Announcing last week it would expand its gasoline hybrid technology development, the world’s largest automaker said it would consider selling complete powertrain modules - engines, transmissions and other drive components - to its competitors. The prospect of giving rivals access to “one-size-fits-all” powertrains comes as cars are increasingly dependent on computerised components, making it easier to design similar parts across model ranges. The industry has moved on from competing largely on mechanical engineering. That trend will likely accelerate as automakers face pressure from regulators to further cut car emissions and develop more long-range electric vehicles. As cars become more like glorified computers, automakers are standardising many mechanical parts and competing more on style and packaging - giving drivers a bigger range of features from automated parking to cockpit concierges. For Toyota, this is a big departure from having a tightly-knit network of suppliers keeping much of their jointly developed technology exclusive so as to have an engineering competitive edge on rivals. “Toyota suppliers produce a
lot of technology which can only be used by Toyota,” Toshiyuki Mizushima, president of Toyota’s powertrain company, told reporters. “We want to change that to a system where we develop technology with our suppliers at an earlier stage ... so they can make that technology available to non-Toyota customers.” Mizushima, who joined Toyota a year ago from group company Aisin Seiki Co, noted, for example, that past versions of Toyota’s hybrid system didn’t fit other automakers’ cars, limiting suppliers’ options to sell to non-Toyota customers. Powertrains combine parts often made separately by several independent parts makers, but Toyota’s are unique in that they are made by its group suppliers, allowing engineers at the automaker and its suppliers to collaborate in development. “Until now, we couldn’t sell the same inverter used in Toyota’s previous hybrid system to other customers because it wouldn’t fit the motor, or the voltage was different,” said Yoshifumi Kato, executive director of engineering R&D at Denso Corp, Toyota’s biggest supplier. “We can avoid this issue if suppliers can sell the entire system.” The move should help auto parts companies such as Denso and Aisin spread their customer base and compete better against global rivals including Robert Bosch and Continental . In addition to the branches and twigs of trees, the marine debris also mixed with plastic waste. This condi-

NEGARA - Regent of Jembrana, I Putu Artha, who just arrived from his visit to Japan has met the Mayor of Okayama, Masao Omori, Sunday (Dec. 18) expected the interns from Jembrana in Japan to maintain their discipline. He also hoped that no interns from Jembrana escape and will become illegal worker. The visit of Regent Artha facilitated by Consulate General of the RI on Thursday (Dec. 15) was in a series of evaluations of cooperation in the matter of apprenticeship of workers from Jembrana that has been previously established. Artha whose presence accompanied by the Regional Secretary of Jembrana Gede Gunadnya and
the Head of the Manpower and Social Agency I Wayan Gorim, was received by the Mayor of Okayama, Masao Omori, and his officials. Artha explained that Regent of Jembrana has an MOU with the Japanese government for placing apprentices that can be absorbed in the industrial sectors of Japan. The program started in 2012 has delivered 172 interns from Jembrana with a period of apprenticeship for three years. In the meantime, the Okayama government so far has established cooperation through one of the cooperatives in Okayama. On that occasion Artha also explained the measures taken by the government of Jembrana to prevent
the apprentices from escaping and then become illegal workers. The measures include the provision of more comprehensive understanding for the apprentices, sustainable apprenticeship monitoring and preparation of post-internship program with entrepreneurship training so that they can be independent by implementing what is gained over in Japan. “So, one of the purposes of our visit, other than monitoring the apprentice, is also to provide them with insights related to the correct apprenticeship rules and regarding their future after their contract terminates,” said Artha. Jawa Indah sailing ship makes emergency berth in Tejakula
SINGARAJA - Jawa Indah sailing ship was forced to berth on Tejakula Beach, Monday (Dec. 19). As planned, the ship carrying five tons of fish and 31 passengers would berth at the fish landing base (PPI) of Sangsit village, Sawan. Due to three-meter high waves and strong winds, the boat finally took refuge on Tejakula Beach. The entire cargo was forced to be unloaded in Tejakula to be delivered to Denpasar and surrounding areas. As information compiled in the field, the Jawa Indah sailing ship driven by Suhardi sailed from Sapeken, Madura, East Java. When it sailed, the marine weather was normal, so that the ship could sail smoothly. When approaching the Sangsit landing base, the marine weather suddenly changed. Three-meter high waves and strong winds crashed the ocean near the fish landing base. Ship captain had contacted to the PPI authority to ensure the sea weather conditions. Due to bad weather at sea and impossible for ship to berth, Suhandri then diverted the ship to take refuge on Tejakula Beach. The voyage heading for Tejakula was oscillating due to big waves and strong winds. Luckily, the captain could control the ship, so that it arrived on the shores of Tejakula safely. He added that since three days ago the sea in Buleleng has been hit by bad weather. The wave height is in the range of 2.5 meters to 3 meters accompanied with strong winds. Amid this extreme weather, his institution received information if the Jawa Indah sailing ship would berth at PPI Sangsit. The ship canceled to berth due to hazardous condition at sea. Police then instructed the captain to seek refuge, so that it was decided to have emergency berth on Tejakula Beach. The consideration of taking emergency berth was made because if returning to Sapeken, the ship is feared to run out of fuel and the condition was much more hazardous. “After we contacted the captain, it was impossible for him to return. So, the best decision was to make emergency berth. Marine police personnel of Tejakula post have been deployed to secure the unloading process of the ship, and the passengers survived,” he explained. He added that since the extreme weather occurred his institution remains to alert his personnel to monitor the waters. In addition, it aggressively disseminated information about the weather conditions in the waters of Buleleng to harbor authority in Sapeken. He also warned the captain of ships that will sail to make sure the safe weather condition
before deciding to sail. Captain and passengers are also reminded to use a life jacket in the voyage. “Waves getting higher and strong wind have occurred for three days. We’ve delivered to harbor authority to delay due to bad weather. If they still force to sail, they must ensure good weather and still use safety device for sailing,” he said. In the meantime, the Head of Buleleng Harbor Authority, Made Rai Ardana, said that since the extreme weather, his authority already regularly reported about the marine weather condition in Buleleng to harbor authority in Sapeken. Probably, the marine weather condition in Sapeken was formerly normal, so that the captain resumed its voyage to Buleleng. In order to prevent undesirable things, his authority appealed to delay voyage until the marine weather condition in Buleleng is back to normal. Other than monitoring ships carrying goods, his authority also reminds fishermen around the PPI Sangsit to delay their voyage to catch fish. If they persist on going to sea, fishermen are encouraged to get weather information from the official authorities issuing the weather forecast. “We’ve informed the marine weather condition here so that ships from Sapeken can delay rather than taking risk amid the current extreme weather. Earlier, there was a ship that took refuge in Tejakula because it forced to sail and berth at the PPI. Unfortunately, the waves were big so that the captain anchored in Tejakula,” he explained. Smog engulfs north China for fourth day; flights diverted
SHANGHAI - A plane carrying the head of the world’s biggest oil exporter was prevented from landing in the Chinese capital of Beijing on Tuesday because of thick smog blanketing large parts of northern China. Amin Nasser, chief executive of the Saudi Arabian oil producer Aramco, was due to attend an event on Saudi culture at Beijing’s National Museum, company officials said, but his plane was diverted after a fourth day of heavy smog led to the cancellation of as many as 181 flights. China declared a “war on pollution” in 2014 amid concern its heavy industrial past was tarnishing its global reputation and holding back its future development. But it has struggled to reverse the damage done by decades of breakneck economic growth, much of it based on the coal-burning power sector. Despite months of efforts to hone its rapid response systems, air quality deteriorated in parts of the region on Tuesday, with the environment ministry warning that firms were flouting emergency restrictions. Some power plants and chemical producers had not scaled back operations in line with regulations, and drivers in Beijing had also been ignoring traffic restrictions, according to China Environmental News, the official publication of the Ministry of Environmental Protection. Italy seeks to borrow 20 bln euros to prop up banking sector
MILAN - The Italian government decided on Monday to seek parliamentary approval to borrow 20 billion euros to underwrite the stability of its wobbly banking sector, starting with a likely bail-out of No. 3 lender, Monte dei Paschi di Siena, as early as this week. Monte dei Paschi, recently judged the weakest of the European Union’s major banks, needs to dispose of a mountain of bad loans and raise 5 billion euros in capital by the end of this month or else face the risk of being wound down by the European Central Bank. Italy’s Economy minister said on Monday the money it was seeking could be used to guarantee adequate liquidity in the banking system. “These resources could also be used as part of a programme to boost capital at banks,” he said in a press conference. A government bailout could come as early as this week, if Monte dei Paschi fails to pull off its own privately funded rescue plan. But it could prove to be politically explosive for the week-old administration of Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni, given that investors are required to bear losses under EU bailout rules. Earlier on Monday, however, the bank received some rare good news in relation to its faltering rescue plan. A key investor that was reconsidering its commitment to the plan issued a statement saying that its concerns had been resolved.
“(Quaestio)... has agreed to approve the Term Sheet for the senior bridge loan as agreed with the financing banks,” the investor, private bank rescue fund Atlante, said. Atlante has committed to spending 1.5 billion euros to buy some of Monte dei Paschi’s bad loans, despite having expressed “deep reservations” in a Dec. 17 letter over the terms of a bridge loan that Monte dei Paschi had secured as part of the sale of bad loans. Even with Atlante’s commitment to participate in the private rescue bid, Monte dei Paschi is still not assured to raise enough money to avoid the need of a state bailout. Its 5 billion euros cash call is meant to conclude on Thursday, but is not underwritten by a consortium of investment banks. Monte dei Paschi shares closed before both Atlante’s statement and the government’s announcement, having lost 11 percent and wiped out a week’s gains. Under a state bailout, the government would inject capital into Monte dei Paschi only after the forced conversion of 4.1 billion euros worth of subordinated bonds into shares, a source said on Friday.

BEIJING - A major city in China’s Shandong province has ordered seven coal-fired power plants, including one of the nation’s largest, to cut output by nearly two-thirds to curtail hazardous smog that has blanketed the north of the country. In a notice reviewed by Reuters, the environmental regulator of Zoucheng city in Shandong, a province known for both its farming and industrial facilities, ordered at least 30 companies to either cut output by 60 percent or shut completely starting last Friday. The cuts include one of China’s largest coal-fired power plants with an installed capacity of 4.5 giga-
watts owned by Huadian Power International. The city’s move offered a glimpse into the magnitude of factory shutdowns across northern China as the world’s second-largest economy scrambles to deal with heavy smog that has engulfed the country’s north for a fourth day. More than two dozen cities have issued their highest possible pollution alerts, shutting schools, curbing traffic and closing airports. For Zoucheng, the cuts are unprecedented, an official from the city’s Environmental Protection Agency told Reuters. “We are facing the worst scenario of pollution
this year,” the official said. Factories owned by brewer Beijing Yanjing Brewery Co Ltd and paper company Shan Dong Sun Paper Industry were also ordered to curb output by 60 percent, according to the notice from the Agency. JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo said the rupiah redenomination would need a long transition period and could not be immediately enacted after the draft law is approved. “It still needs a long (transition) period when (the draft law) is approved,” the president said, after launching the new rupiah notes in the central banks (BI) building here on Monday. President Jokowi stated that there might be a seven year transition period following the issuance
of the law on rupiah redenomination. “This should be submitted in the Prolegnas (national legislation program). The draft law should have been submitted to Prolegnas 2017, but we didnt see it yet,” he added. “It would need a long transition period after the approval. Now, we have not even seen the draft law submitted in the Prolegnas,” he reiterated. Previously, the government reportedly proposed a draft law on redenomination to be submitted to
the National Legislation Program (Prolegnas) in 2017. The central bank (BI) has expressed hope that the draft law could soon be discussed in parliament. BI officials said the countrys economy in 2017 would be conducive for discussions about legal basis to implement redenomination. The situation was different when the proposal first appeared in 2013, BI said. JAKARTA - Coordinating Minister for Economy Darmin Nasution said the countrys economic growth could be higher than the target of 5.1 percent if implementation is consistent in a number of programs. “5.1 percent tends to be the baseline. We want higher than that at 5.2 percent-5.4 percent,” Darmin said at a discussion on “Prospects of Indonesian Economy” 2017 here on Monday. He said consistency is needed in the development of infrastructure and implementation of economic policy packages and reform in fiscal policy. “We have to acknowledge our growth engines have not run in full gear, but we have launched deregulation to boost investment and improve fiscal system through tax reform,” he said. He said the government sought to strengthen the domestic economy as the global economy is not expected to fully recover yet in 2017 as a result of political uncertainties in the United States, Europe and China. “We do this opening fiscal room for infrastructure and education and health to prevent us from being dragged into the global economic slowdown,”he said. Economist from Samuel Asset Management Lana Soelistianingsih said Indonesian economy in 2017 could grow as projected by 5 percent - 5.2 percent driven by household consumption and stronger exports. Lana, however, warned of a number of challenges in 2017 such as inflationary risk that could weaken the peoples purchasing power and potential shortfall in tax revenue although there should be no budget cut in the middle of the year. Other challenges are competition in drawing capital with the United States although there is still high global liquidity, and tendency to protectionism in trade despite expected price hike for global commodity. MEDAN - The remains of Captain J. Hotlan F. Saragih arrived at 10 am, Jakarta time, at Soewondo airbase in Medan, Monday, enroute to his hometown in the Simalungun region. The late Captains wife could be seen awaiting the arrival of Saragihs remains, while sitting in a wheelchair, after the sudden death of her late husband.
Accompanied by the Air Force squad, the remains of Captain J. Hotlan F. Saragih were received by Commander of the Airbase, Colonel P. Arifin Syahrir. A funeral service was then held in the Soewondo hangar, Soewondo Airbase, Medan. After the 90 minute funeral service, Saragihs remains were taken to the Si-
malungun region in an ambulance that belongs to Efarina Etaham hospital. A cousin of the deceased, Hesti Sipayung, said that the remains will be taken to Pagar village in the Bandar Mariah Butu town in Simalungun. As for the time and location of the burial, the family are still in discussions. “We have yet to determine a place, it is
still being discussed,” she said. According to officials, Captain J. Hotlan F. Saragih, born on June 16 1985, was the co-pilot in the Hercules A-130 aircraft that crashed in Minimo village, Mima disctrict, Jayawijaya sub-district on Sunday morning. BERLIN - Berlin police said on Tuesday that investigators assume the driver of a truck that ploughed into a crowd at a Berlin Christmas market, killing 12 people and injuring 48 others, did so intentionally in a suspected terrorist attack. The truck crashed into people gathered around wooden huts serving mulled wine and sausages at the foot of the Kaiser Wilhelm memorial church, which was left as a ruin after World War Two, in the heart of former West Berlin on Monday evening. “Our investigators assume that the truck was deliberately steered into the crowd at the Christmas market at Breitscheidplatz,” police said on Twitter. “All police measures related to the suspected terrorist attack at Breitscheidplatz are progressing at full steam and with the necessary diligence,” police said. The incident evoked memories of an attack in Nice, France in July when a Tunisian-born man drove a 19-tonne truck
along the beach front, mowing down people who had gathered to watch the fireworks on Bastille Day, killing 86 people. That attack was claimed by Islamic State. Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere had previously said there were indications that the incident in Berlin was an attack. Police said that the man found dead in the truck was a Polish citizen but added he was not in control of the vehicle. The nationality of the suspected driver, who fled the crash scene and was later arrested, was unclear, they said. German media cited local security sources as saying that there was evidence suggesting the arrested suspect was from Afghanistan or Pakistan and had

Berlin police assume truck was deliberately driven into Christmas market
BERLIN - Berlin police said on Tuesday that investigators assume the driver of a truck that ploughed into a crowd at a Berlin Christmas market, killing 12 people and injuring 48 others, did so intentionally in a suspected terrorist attack. The truck crashed into people gathered around wooden huts serving mulled wine and sausages at the foot of the Kaiser Wilhelm memorial church, which was left as a ruin after World War Two, in the heart of former West Berlin on Monday evening. “Our investigators assume that the truck was deliberately steered into the crowd at the Christmas market at Breitscheidplatz,” police said on Twitter. “All police measures related to the suspected terrorist attack at Breitscheidplatz are progressing at full steam and with the necessary diligence,” police said. The incident evoked memories of an attack in Nice, France in July when a Tunisian-born man drove a 19-tonne truck
along the beach front, mowing down people who had gathered to watch the fireworks on Bastille Day, killing 86 people. That attack was claimed by Islamic State. Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere had previously said there were indications that the incident in Berlin was an attack. Police said that the man found dead in the truck was a Polish citizen but added he was not in control of the vehicle. The nationality of the suspected driver, who fled the crash scene and was later arrested, was unclear, they said. German media cited local security sources as saying that there was evidence suggesting the arrested suspect was from Afghanistan or Pakistan and had
entered Germany in February as a refugee. Local broadcaster rbb cited security sources as saying the arrested truck driver came to Germany via Passau, a city on the Austrian border, on Dec. 31, 2015. Italy seeks to borrow 20 bln euros to prop up banking sector
MILAN - The Italian government decided on Monday to seek parliamentary approval to borrow 20 billion euros to underwrite the stability of its wobbly banking sector, starting with a likely bail-out of No. 3 lender, Monte dei Paschi di Siena, as early as this week. Monte dei Paschi, recently judged the weakest of the European Union’s major banks, needs to dispose of a mountain of bad loans and raise 5 billion euros in capital by the end of this month or else face the risk of being wound down by the European Central Bank. Italy’s Economy minister said on Monday the money it was seeking could be used to guarantee adequate liquidity in the banking system. “These resources could also be used as part of a programme to boost capital at banks,” he said in a press conference. A government bailout could come as early as this week, if Monte dei Paschi fails to pull off its own privately funded rescue plan. But it could prove to be politically explosive for the week-old administration of Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni, given that investors are required to bear losses under EU bailout rules. Earlier on Monday, however, the bank received some rare good news in relation to its faltering rescue plan. A key investor that was reconsidering its commitment to the plan issued a statement saying that its concerns had been resolved.
“(Quaestio)... has agreed to approve the Term Sheet for the senior bridge loan as agreed with the financing banks,” the investor, private bank rescue fund Atlante, said. Atlante has committed to spending 1.5 billion euros to buy some of Monte dei Paschi’s bad loans, despite having expressed “deep reservations” in a Dec. 17 letter over the terms of a bridge loan that Monte dei Paschi had secured as part of the sale of bad loans. Even with Atlante’s commitment to participate in the private rescue bid, Monte dei Paschi is still not assured to raise enough money to avoid the need of a state bailout. Its 5 billion euros cash call is meant to conclude on Thursday, but is not underwritten by a consortium of investment banks. Monte dei Paschi shares closed before both Atlante’s statement and the government’s announcement, having lost 11 percent and wiped out a week’s gains. Under a state bailout, the government would inject capital into Monte dei Paschi only after the forced conversion of 4.1 billion euros worth of subordinated bonds into shares, a source said on Friday.

BEIJING - A major city in China’s Shandong province has ordered seven coal-fired power plants, including one of the nation’s largest, to cut output by nearly two-thirds to curtail hazardous smog that has blanketed the north of the country. In a notice reviewed by Reuters, the environmental regulator of Zoucheng city in Shandong, a province known for both its farming and industrial facilities, ordered at least 30 companies to either cut output by 60 percent or shut completely starting last Friday. The cuts include one of China’s largest coal-fired power plants with an installed capacity of 4.5 giga-
watts owned by Huadian Power International. The city’s move offered a glimpse into the magnitude of factory shutdowns across northern China as the world’s second-largest economy scrambles to deal with heavy smog that has engulfed the country’s north for a fourth day. More than two dozen cities have issued their highest possible pollution alerts, shutting schools, curbing traffic and closing airports. For Zoucheng, the cuts are unprecedented, an official from the city’s Environmental Protection Agency told Reuters. “We are facing the worst scenario of pollution
this year,” the official said. Factories owned by brewer Beijing Yanjing Brewery Co Ltd and paper company Shan Dong Sun Paper Industry were also ordered to curb output by 60 percent, according to the notice from the Agency. Redenomination needs long transition period: President Jokowi
JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo said the rupiah redenomination would need a long transition period and could not be immediately enacted after the draft law is approved. “It still needs a long (transition) period when (the draft law) is approved,” the president said, after launching the new rupiah notes in the central banks (BI) building here on Monday. President Jokowi stated that there might be a seven year transition period following the issuance
of the law on rupiah redenomination. “This should be submitted in the Prolegnas (national legislation program). The draft law should have been submitted to Prolegnas 2017, but we didnt see it yet,” he added. “It would need a long transition period after the approval. Now, we have not even seen the draft law submitted in the Prolegnas,” he reiterated. Previously, the government reportedly proposed a draft law on redenomination to be submitted to
the National Legislation Program (Prolegnas) in 2017. The central bank (BI) has expressed hope that the draft law could soon be discussed in parliament. BI officials said the countrys economy in 2017 would be conducive for discussions about legal basis to implement redenomination. The situation was different when the proposal first appeared in 2013, BI said. Redenomination is a reduction in the face value of a currency, by deducting its digits without changing the currencys value. (ant)
JAKARTA - Coordinating Minister for Economy Darmin Nasution said the countrys economic growth could be higher than the target of 5.1 percent if implementation is consistent in a number of programs. “5.1 percent tends to be the baseline. We want higher than that at 5.2 percent-5.4 percent,” Darmin said at a discussion on “Prospects of Indonesian Economy” 2017 here on Monday. He said consistency is needed in the development of infrastructure and implementation of economic policy packages and reform in fiscal policy. “We have to acknowledge our growth engines have not run in full gear, but we have launched deregulation to boost investment and improve fiscal system through tax reform,” he said. He said the government sought to strengthen the domestic economy as the global economy is not expected to fully recover yet in 2017 as a result of political uncertainties in the United States, Europe and China. “We do this opening fiscal room for infrastructure and education and health to prevent us from being dragged into the global economic slowdown,”he said. Economist from Samuel Asset Management Lana Soelistianingsih said Indonesian economy in 2017 could grow as projected by 5 percent - 5.2 percent driven by household consumption and stronger exports. Lana, however, warned of a number of challenges in 2017 such as inflationary risk that could weaken the peoples purchasing power and potential shortfall in tax revenue although there should be no budget cut in the middle of the year. Other challenges are competition in drawing capital with the United States although there is still high global liquidity, and tendency to protectionism in trade despite expected price hike for global commodity. MEDAN - The remains of Captain J. Hotlan F. Saragih arrived at 10 am, Jakarta time, at Soewondo airbase in Medan, Monday, enroute to his hometown in the Simalungun region. The late Captains wife could be seen awaiting the arrival of Saragihs remains, while sitting in a wheelchair, after the sudden death of her late husband.
Accompanied by the Air Force squad, the remains of Captain J. Hotlan F. Saragih were received by Commander of the Airbase, Colonel P. Arifin Syahrir. A funeral service was then held in the Soewondo hangar, Soewondo Airbase, Medan. After the 90 minute funeral service, Saragihs remains were taken to the Si-
malungun region in an ambulance that belongs to Efarina Etaham hospital. A cousin of the deceased, Hesti Sipayung, said that the remains will be taken to Pagar village in the Bandar Mariah Butu town in Simalungun. As for the time and location of the burial, the family are still in discussions. “We have yet to determine a place, it is
still being discussed,” she said. According to officials, Captain J. Hotlan F. Saragih, born on June 16 1985, was the co-pilot in the Hercules A-130 aircraft that crashed in Minimo village, Mima disctrict, Jayawijaya sub-district on Sunday morning. Jawa Indah sailing ship makes emergency berth in Tejakula
SINGARAJA - Jawa Indah sailing ship was forced to berth on Tejakula Beach, Monday (Dec. 19). As planned, the ship carrying five tons of fish and 31 passengers would berth at the fish landing base (PPI) of Sangsit village, Sawan. Due to three-meter high waves and strong winds, the boat finally took refuge on Tejakula Beach. The entire cargo was forced to be unloaded in Tejakula to be delivered to Denpasar and surrounding areas. As information compiled in the field, the Jawa Indah sailing ship driven by Suhardi sailed from Sapeken, Madura, East Java. When it sailed, the marine weather was normal, so that the ship could sail smoothly. When approaching the Sangsit landing base, the marine weather suddenly changed. Three-meter high waves and strong winds crashed the ocean near the fish landing base. Ship captain had contacted to the PPI authority to ensure the sea weather conditions. Due to bad weather at sea and impossible for ship to berth, Suhandri then diverted the ship to take refuge on Tejakula Beach. The voyage heading for Tejakula was oscillating due to big waves and strong winds. Luckily, the captain could control the ship, so that it arrived on the shores of Tejakula safely. The entire cargo of fresh fish and passengers were unloaded to continue the journey to Denpasar and surrounding areas. Chief of Marine Police, Putu Ariyana,
with permission from the Chief of Buleleng Police, Made Sukawijaya, when asked for his confirmation stated that the Jawa Indah sailing ship was stuck in big waves when it would be going to berth at Sangsit. He added that since three days ago the sea in Buleleng has been hit by bad weather. The wave height is in the range of 2.5 meters to 3 meters accompanied with strong winds. Amid this extreme weather, his institution received information if the Jawa Indah sailing ship would berth at PPI Sangsit. The ship canceled to berth due to hazardous condition at sea. Police then instructed the captain to seek refuge, so that it was decided to have emergency berth on Tejakula Beach. The consideration of taking emergency berth was made because if returning to Sapeken, the ship is feared to run out of fuel and the condition was much more hazardous. “After we contacted the captain, it was impossible for him to return. So, the best decision was to make emergency berth. Marine police personnel of Tejakula post have been deployed to secure the unloading process of the ship, and the passengers survived,” he explained. He added that since the extreme weather occurred his institution remains to alert his personnel to monitor the waters. In addition, it aggressively disseminated information about the weather conditions in the waters of Buleleng to harbor authority in Sapeken. He also warned the captain of ships that will sail to make sure the safe weather condition
before deciding to sail. Captain and passengers are also reminded to use a life jacket in the voyage. “Waves getting higher and strong wind have occurred for three days. We’ve delivered to harbor authority to delay due to bad weather. If they still force to sail, they must ensure good weather and still use safety device for sailing,” he said. In the meantime, the Head of Buleleng Harbor Authority, Made Rai Ardana, said that since the extreme weather, his authority already regularly reported about the marine weather condition in Buleleng to harbor authority in Sapeken. Probably, the marine weather condition in Sapeken was formerly normal, so that the captain resumed its voyage to Buleleng. In order to prevent undesirable things, his authority appealed to delay voyage until the marine weather condition in Buleleng is back to normal. Other than monitoring ships carrying goods, his authority also reminds fishermen around the PPI Sangsit to delay their voyage to catch fish. If they persist on going to sea, fishermen are encouraged to get weather information from the official authorities issuing the weather forecast. “We’ve informed the marine weather condition here so that ships from Sapeken can delay rather than taking risk amid the current extreme weather. Earlier, there was a ship that took refuge in Tejakula because it forced to sail and berth at the PPI. Unfortunately, the waves were big so that the captain anchored in Tejakula,” he explained. Smog engulfs north China for fourth day; flights diverted
SHANGHAI - A plane carrying the head of the world’s biggest oil exporter was prevented from landing in the Chinese capital of Beijing on Tuesday because of thick smog blanketing large parts of northern China. Amin Nasser, chief executive of the Saudi Arabian oil producer Aramco, was due to attend an event on Saudi culture at Beijing’s National Museum, company officials said, but his plane was diverted after a fourth day of heavy smog led to the cancellation of as many as 181 flights. China declared a “war on pollution” in 2014 amid concern its heavy industrial past was tarnishing its global reputation and holding back its future development. But it has struggled to reverse the damage done by decades of breakneck economic growth, much of it based on the coal-burning power sector. Despite months of efforts to hone its rapid response systems, air quality deteriorated in parts of the region on Tuesday, with the environment ministry warning that firms were flouting emergency restrictions. Some power plants and chemical producers had not scaled back operations in line with regulations, and drivers in Beijing had also been ignoring traffic restrictions, according to China Environmental News, the official publication of the Ministry of Environmental Protection. The paper said as many as 24 cities had issued pollution “red alerts” by Tuesday but, despite the implementation of emergency measures, smog concentrations had increased in some places. They included several major cities in the industrial province of Hebei, which surrounds Beijing. Czechs open production of batteries based on nanotechnology

Toyota unlocks its engine technology, could sell to rivals
TOKYO - Long guarded about what was beneath the hood of its pioneering Prius cars, Toyota Motor Corp plans to open up its powertrain technology to rivals, hoping this will boost sales and speed up the industry’s shift to lower-emission vehicles. Announcing last week it would expand its gasoline hybrid technology development, the world’s largest automaker said it would consider selling complete powertrain modules - engines, transmissions and other drive components - to its competitors. The prospect of giving rivals access to “one-size-fits-all” powertrains comes as cars are increasingly dependent on computerised components, making it easier to design similar parts across model ranges. The industry has moved on from competing largely on mechanical engineering. That trend will likely accelerate as automakers face pressure from regulators to further cut car emissions and develop more long-range electric vehicles. As cars become more like glorified computers, automakers are standardising many mechanical parts and competing more on style and packaging - giving drivers a bigger range of features from automated parking to cockpit concierges. For Toyota, this is a big departure from having a tightly-knit network of suppliers keeping much of their jointly developed technology exclusive so as to have an engineering competitive edge on rivals. “Toyota suppliers produce a
lot of technology which can only be used by Toyota,” Toshiyuki Mizushima, president of Toyota’s powertrain company, told reporters. “We want to change that to a system where we develop technology with our suppliers at an earlier stage ... so they can make that technology available to non-Toyota customers.” Mizushima, who joined Toyota a year ago from group company Aisin Seiki Co, noted, for example, that past versions of Toyota’s hybrid system didn’t fit other automakers’ cars, limiting suppliers’ options to sell to non-Toyota customers. Powertrains combine parts often made separately by several independent parts makers, but Toyota’s are unique in that they are made by its group suppliers, allowing engineers at the automaker and its suppliers to collaborate in development. “Until now, we couldn’t sell the same inverter used in Toyota’s previous hybrid system to other customers because it wouldn’t fit the motor, or the voltage was different,” said Yoshifumi Kato, executive director of engineering R&D at Denso Corp, Toyota’s biggest supplier. “We can avoid this issue if suppliers can sell the entire system.” The move should help auto parts companies such as Denso and Aisin spread their customer base and compete better against global rivals including Robert Bosch and Continental . NEGARA - Regent of Jembrana, I Putu Artha, who just arrived from his visit to Japan has met the Mayor of Okayama, Masao Omori, Sunday (Dec. 18) expected the interns from Jembrana in Japan to maintain their discipline. He also hoped that no interns from Jembrana escape and will become illegal worker. The visit of Regent Artha facilitated by Consulate General of the RI on Thursday (Dec. 15) was in a series of evaluations of cooperation in the matter of apprenticeship of workers from Jembrana that has been previously established. Artha whose presence accompanied by the Regional Secretary of Jembrana Gede Gunadnya and
the Head of the Manpower and Social Agency I Wayan Gorim, was received by the Mayor of Okayama, Masao Omori, and his officials. Artha explained that Regent of Jembrana has an MOU with the Japanese government for placing apprentices that can be absorbed in the industrial sectors of Japan. The program started in 2012 has delivered 172 interns from Jembrana with a period of apprenticeship for three years. In the meantime, the Okayama government so far has established cooperation through one of the cooperatives in Okayama. On that occasion Artha also explained the measures taken by the government of Jembrana to prevent
the apprentices from escaping and then become illegal workers. The measures include the provision of more comprehensive understanding for the apprentices, sustainable apprenticeship monitoring and preparation of post-internship program with entrepreneurship training so that they can be independent by implementing what is gained over in Japan. “So, one of the purposes of our visit, other than monitoring the apprentice, is also to provide them with insights related to the correct apprenticeship rules and regarding their future after their contract terminates,” said Artha. DENPASAR - The success of Denpasar in handling rabies case is quite brilliant. Now, the case has been successfully resolved. Moreover, the case has reached zero percent. However, it is not the same as what happens to the dengue fever case. This case still becomes a threat to residents of Denpasar. Moreover, in the current transitional season, the threat to rising number of dengue cases comes back and is getting greater. Therefore, a number of efforts have been intensified to suppress dengue cases. Moreover, it is currently designed so that each household can have a larva monitoring officer. Mayor of Denpasar Mayor, I.B. Rai Dharmawijaya Mantra, confirmed it on Sunday (Dec. 18) after attending the clean-up action in North Denpasar. The environmental clean-up activity was attended by the Regional Secretary of Denpasar AAN Rai Iswara, Chairman of Commission I of the Denpasar House of Representatives Ketut Suteja Kumara, military, police and the agency heads in the circle of the Denpasar municipality, subdistrict head of North Denpasar Nyoman Lodera and village officials mingling with local community. Rai Mantra continuously urged people to maintain sanitation and health independently starting from
each individual. He considered that sanitation is a necessity in keeping the environment healthy. On that account, the community must begin to care about the environmental sanitation. According to Rai Mantra, by keeping the environmental sanitation, people are expected to begin carrying out the movement of one house one larva monitoring officer in the effort to prevent dengue cases. He said that dengue cases lately emerged again, though Denpasar is recorded as the lowest in terms of dengue cases in the Bali Province. However, if people do not care about their environmental sanitation the dengue cases would increase. “We invite the community to care, do not just wait for fogging but start to notice the surrounding environment that is vulnerable to becoming the breeding area of mosquitoes. We also provide free abate powder that can be obtained in the nearest health center,” said Rai Mantra.

Since the rabies cases in Denpasar have reached zero percent, Rai Mantra hoped to reduce the number of dengue fever and make the region of Denpasar free from larvae and mosquito breeding. To that end, Rai Mantra made independent larvae monitoring program or a movement of one house one monitoring officer denoting the program of the government of Denpasar. In other words, every house has one independent larvae monitoring. In addition, Rai Mantra invited residents to perform administration of abate powder in bulk to avoid the occurrence of dengue cases. “This is one of the ways to suppress dengue cases in the city of Denpasar. If all people do it properly, I am confident the number of dengue outbreaks can be suppressed. So, it just needs to provide counseling and the way to overcome it and when to implement it,” explained Rai Mantra. Chief of Taman Indah Nangka neighborhood, I Made Suantina, said that this activity is a measure to increase the mutual cooperation as well as to motivate people so that they can improve sanitation of their respective environment having a total of 72 houses. TABANAN - Recent extreme weather claimed some other casualties. Three foreign travelers from China were swept away by sea currents while swimming on Pasut Beach, Kerambitan, Monday (Dec. 19). As a result, one person was still missing, while two others survived. As the information compiled, the missing victim swept away on Pasut Beach is named Xie Zihao, 20. The victim is known to stay at Villa Fulman along with the two companions who also came from China. Chairman of the Indonesia fishermen association (HNSI) of Tabanan, Ketut Arsana Yasa, said that the incident happened around 17:12. At that time, the victim along with two companions was swimming by using a short surfboard located precisely 200 meters away from their villa. Suddenly the three victims were swept away. Two of his companions managed to escape while the victim who cannot swim disappeared as swept away by sea currents. The search process for the victim was quite difficult due to winds accompanied with heavy rain flushing almost all areas of Tabanan. “Two people managed to escape, while one person is still missing, all the three are men,” he said. Kesbangpol browses foreign mass organization opened in Bali
DENPASAR - President has issued Government Regulation No.59/2016 which essentially allows foreign citizens to establish mass organizations in Indonesia. On the Island of Bali, the national unity and political agency (Kesbangpol) of Bali has not found any foreigners establishing such mass organizations. However, it remains to trace foreign organizations denoting the branch from the other regions. “So far, we have not found any foreigners in Bali establishing a mass organization, but in the other regions have done. So, I’d just like to monitor it first whether they have opened branches in Bali,” said the Head of the Kesbangpol Bali, I Gede Putu Jaya Suartama, when confirmed via telephone, Monday (Dec. 19). According to him, any organization of foreigners wishing to open a branch in Bali should report to the Kesbangpol. It must present some evidences if the organization has been already registered and obtained a formal decision from the Ministry of Law and Human Rights as well as the Ministry of the Interior. If they are found not reporting, they will be penalized for it. “We have to take measures for this. Governor has the authority through the Kesbangpol to take coordinating measures by summoning the immigration and the law and human rights agency. In terms of the execution, we’ll submit it to police and the prosecutor’s office,” he explained. Jaya added that the presence of foreign mass organizations will certainly have an impact on Bali as an international tourist destination. The impact should be closely watched. “As Indonesian citizen and as human being, suspecting is still okay. We will observe their movement and activities,” he added. (kmb32)

Girl group Fifth Harmony down to four as Cabello goes solo

The pop group formed out of U.S. talent show “The X Factor” in 2012 said on Monday that Camila Cabello was leaving the quintet but that the band would be moving ahead. Cabello, 19, said she was launching a solo career, a move she had discussed at length with the other four young women. “After four and a half years of being together, we have been informed via her representatives that Camila has decided to leave Fifth Harmony. The war, which has killed more than 300,000 people and created a power vacuum exploited by Islamic State, reached a potential turning point last week when Syrian forces ended rebel resistance in the northern city of Aleppo. Turkey identified the killer as 22-year-old Mevlut Mert Altintas, who had worked for the Ankara riot police for 2-1/2 years. Altintas, who also shouted slogans associated with Islamist militancy after shooting ambassador Andrey Karlov, was killed minutes later by members of Turkey’s special forces. His mother, father, sister and two other relatives were held in the western province of Aydin, while his flatmate in Ankara was also detained, the state-run Anadolu agency said.
One senior Turkish security official said investigators were focusing on whether Altintas had links to the U.S.-based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen, who Ankara blames for a failed July coup. Gulen has denied responsibility for the coup and Monday’s attack and has condemned both events. The slogans that Altintas shouted, which were captured on video and circulated widely on social media, suggested he was aligned to a radical Islamist ideology, rather than that of Gulen, who preaches a message of interfaith dialogue. “Don’t forget Aleppo, don’t forget Syria. You will not be able to feel safe for as long as our districts are not safe. Only death can take me from here,” he shouted in Turkish.
Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday he and Russia’s Vladimir Putin had agreed in a telephone call that their cooperation in fighting terrorism should be even stronger after the killing.
