Abbas says won’t negotiate ‘for single day’ if freeze ends Agence France Presse

NEW YORK - Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas said Monday he will not take part in US-backed peace talks “for a single day” if Israel does not extend a freeze on settlement building at the month’s end. “The negotiations will continue as long as the settlement (construction) remains frozen, but I am not prepared to negotiate an agreement for a single day more,” Abbas told AFP. Abbas is to give a speech at the UN General Assembly in New York this week about “efforts to end the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land since 1967 to create an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital,” his spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeina said. Israel and the Palestinians began long-awaited peace negotiations under US mediation on September 2.

But so far Israel has stubbornly refused to extend the partial 10-month ban on new construction, and the Palestinians have vowed to pull out of the talks if building resumes. The deadline for the end of Israel’s freeze on settlement construction is widely accepted as September 26, exactly 10 months and a day after the original cabinet decision. But the Israeli military order regarding the moratorium states it will only close at midnight on September 30.

Bali News Alleged to hypnotize

An Iranian tourist captured as shoplifts at Discovery Mall The ranks of Kuta police detective unit (Reskrim) managed to capture a criminal alleged to using hypnosis, last Saturday (Sep 18) night. Even, the suspect was a foreign citizen. His name is Mahadi Arab H, 29, from Iran and lived in one of the hotels around Jalan Kartika Plaza, Kuta. The suspect was proved to have shoplifted some merchandise in eight stores within the Discovery Shopping Mall, Jalan Kartika Plaza, Kuta. confessed not to bring money because he left behind his wallet at the hotel,” explained Chief Ganefo. Related to the chronology of the incident, the suspect initially came to the scene by pretending to be shopping at 10:00 pm Local Time. He visited the store one by one. Then, the suspect took several items from each store. Having got some items at hand, the suspect went out. Well, when the suspect was coming out of the mall no single shopkeeper realized it. “The suspect entered the store, took the goods and came out,” he told reporters last Sunday. Finally, the suspect entered the last store namely the eighth one. Numerous articles had been taken and the suspect went out of the mall. Well,

one of the shopkeepers just realized that the suspect had not paid the goods. The witness then reported the incident to the local security officer and proceeded to police station. Immediately the members of mobile detective unit were deployed to the scene to arrest the suspect. The items taken by the suspect consisted of two T-shirts, a headdress, a handbag, color box, a wallet and some other goods. Total loss suffered by the 8 stores amounted to IDR 1.2 million. “So far, the suspect is still being examined intensively by investigator. Those traditional ports indeed were commonly used every day as an alternative route to deliver and bring in basic goods from Buleleng to Madura and other places in Java. However, just before and after the Idul Fitri holiday, the ports were also commonly used as a point of homecoming and backflow from and to Buleleng. One of the vessel skippers usually conveying passengers from Sangsit Port to Madura admitted that he was accustomed to carry passengers from Sangsit to Madura. Those passengers were mostly residents of Madura that had been living in Denpasar all this time. Before and after Idul Fitri, the passengers transported from Bali to Madura or from Madura to Bali through Sangsit Port increased sharply.”Few days ago I carried twenty passengers from Madura. French Tourist Hypnotized, IDR 11.5 Million Gone Denpasar (Bali Post) –

Hypnotize crime action been attacking around lately and in these past few days there have been victims, not only locals but also foreigners. All Day Rain Landslide Closed Parts of Road to Tirta Empul Gianyar (Bali Post) –

The heavy rain pouring in Gianyar Region since Saturday night until the next day Sunday (19/9) have caused some parts of the road to Pura (temple) Tirta Empul, Tampaksiring, Gianyar closed. The condition caused traffic as only a part of the road can be used. The landslide happened on the north of Pura Mengening, Banjar Sraseda, Tampaksiring Village. The soil on the west with height 4 meter experienced landslide with trees coming down to parts of the road. Luckily Tampaksiring Police were ready to arrange the routes so there’s not fatal traffic. Empul for cleansing (melukat). Gianyar Region Disaster Management Board (BPBD) also went to location to check the situation. After coordinating with other institutes, there has been evacuation by workers since 10.30 am wita. Trees that also went down were cut and the soils covering the road were moved aside so it won’t block the road anymore. The pouring rain with speedy winds hit Jembrana since Saturday (18/9) has made mess everywhere as some parts of Jembrana were under water. Those areas are Gumbrih, Pekutatan, Yeh Embang, Mendoyo, Lelateng, Negara, Tegal Badeng Timur, Negara, Pengambengan Negara, Kaliakah, Banyubiru and Candikusuma Melaya. More over Jembrana Election Commission (KPUD) office were also flooded and the water goes in the data room also media center. Flood also caused fences on GOR Pekutatan in the east side broken and fell down. According to Putu Artha this is caused by the flood also its wrong planning from the first. Some places in Yeh Embang also flooded which caused lots of the river’s rail broken down. Also floods on the paddy fields of Lelateng and Tegal Badeng Timur. is worse and worrying. According to residents the flood this time is much worse than the one happening last July. What’s much worse was a house owned by a widow, Sumarni (45) from Munduk, Pengambengan, Negara, broken down. The widow just built this house helped by the locals and was in tears as Putu Artha gave some help. Another house, owned by Hadimin (35), has its room holed and water coming in the house like a river, “Thankfully I was woken up by a neighbor when my room was broken down at 3 am.” A resident named Nurkholis who has its house in front of MI Darussalam at Kelapa Balian, pengambengan was forced to move as the house made from wood was no longer there. Sulaemi hoped for a solution from the Jembrana government to avoid such flood in this area, “Don’t just supervise it.” Fina, a teacher in MI Darussalam said the school has been caught by flood every time a pouring heavy rain comes. This is due to the small sized culverts because of a factory construction. She hoped there will be a solution because this is delaying studies process in this school. In some places at Kaliakah Negara and Cndikusuma Melaya also under water and a goat also house equipments were all dragged. Putu Artha mentioned how worrying this flood is and asked Kesbanglinmas to go through this disaster so the nature disaster budget IDR 2 Billion can be used to manage every time a heavy rain comes down to these areas, “All this time the budget was never used.” Artha also hoped that the residents care about the drainage around there, “The drainage infrastructure has to be fixed especially those on river borders.” (120)

Thai army says grenades missing AFP

BANGKOK (AFP) – About 30 rocket-propelled grenades have gone missing from a military base in Thailand, officials said Monday, raising fears of fresh violence. Army chief Anupong Paojinda said a forensic investigation was underway to try to find those responsible for the disappearance of the weapons at the base in central Lopburi province this month. A series of grenade blasts have hit Bangkok in recent weeks, as the capital remains under emergency rule following mass “Red Shirt” protests in April and May that left 91 people dead in clashes between troops and demonstrators. Officials said it was unclear whether the apparent theft of the grenades was linked to the unrest. The Reds — who held peaceful gatherings Sunday to mark the anniversary of the 2006 coup that ousted their hero Thaksin Shinawatra as premier — deny any involvement in the grenade blasts. Thai authorities are also struggling to quell a six-year insurgency in the country’s Muslim-majority southern provinces.

The Sweden Democrats want sharp cuts in immigration and have called Islam Sweden’s biggest foreign threat since World War II.

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

LONDON – The cancerstricken Lockerbie bomber can get out of bed and walk although he is clearly a very sick man, said the father of a victim after visiting him in Libya. Abdelbaset Ali Mohmet alMegrahi invited Jim Swire, whose 23-year-old daughter Flora was one of 270 killed in the 1988 bombing, to visit him and the two men spent an hour together on a hospital ward in Tripoli on Tuesday. Swire, who is British, is convinced of the Libyan’s innocence and has spearheaded a campaign for an inquiry into the bombing. Megrahi, the only person ever convicted of the attack, was released from a Scottish prison in August last year on compassionate grounds after being diagnosed with prostate cancer. Scotland’s devolved government, which has control over its own justice matters, freed the bomber after he was given just three months to live and he returned to Libya to a hero’s welcome. But more than a year later he is still alive, to the anger of relatives of the mainly American victims who died when Pan Am flight 103 blew up over the Scottish town of Lockerbie. TABANAN - Incessant Heavy rain and strong wind triggered a landslide and uprooted a number of trees in Tabanan District, Bali Province, Sunday. “A minor landslide occurred at around 11 am local time near Patung Jagung at Bedugul,” Adjunct Commissioner I Made Punia of Tabanan police office, said. Floodwaters eroded a cliff surrounding Patung Jagung area and triggered a landslide which buried part of the road there, he said. The landslide disrupted traffic in Tabanan district, especially for vehicles heading to Singaraja or Denpasar, he added. Local volunteers and public works personnel cleaned up the mud from the road about an hour after the landslide, to normalize the traffic again. After finish eating the ketupat, the Moslems will visit the cemetery of Datuk Mas Pakel or also known as Sunan Mumbul It is a sacred cemetery and often being visited during big days such as Idul Fitri. “Sunan Mumbul was

one of the servants of the Karangasem King,” Rusnah said. According to the legend, Mas Pakel was framed and the people said that he will give bad luck to the kingdom. Then, some of the officers in the palace suggested that Mas Pakel should be killed. The King told of his royal guard to kill Mas Pakel. The guard brought Mas Pakel to Ujung beach to be executed but when the sword swung to his neck, Mas Pakel was running on the water and vanished.

Bruise them on stone mortar and then fry them halfdone. · All spices are ground and stir-fry by 2 tbsp of palm oil taken from the oil used for frying the bean. SYDNEY - Australia’s central bank warned Monday of a “fairly robust upswing” as the nation experienced the biggest minerals and energy boom in more than 100 years, flagging a return to rate hikes.

DETROIT – Investment bankers handling the upcoming General Motors Co. stock sale are expected to court foreign investors as well as those in North America, according to a U.S. Treasury Department statement. GM and the Treasury Department would not comment Sunday on reports that the automaker is in talks with its current partner in China, SAIC, about buying a stake in the Detroit company. SAIC is owned by the Chinese government. The Treasury Department, in a statement issued late Friday, said investors in GM would be sought across “multiple geographies,” with a focus on North America. The U.S. Treasury loaned GM about $50 billion to help it through bankruptcy protection last year. GM has repaid $6.7 billion. The rest of the bailout money was converted to a 61 percent government stake in the company. The government hopes to get the remaining $43 billion back with stock sales that could start in mid-November. Foreign investment in U.S. automakers and other companies is common. Before the stock sale, GM will put on a two-week “road show” of presentations for investors, and several stops are expected to be in cities outside the U.S. The Treasury statement also said banks underwriting the GM stock sale will be expected to balance getting the maximum price per share and return for taxpayers with having a stable base of shareholders and keeping up interest in several sales that will occur after the initial public offering. Individual investors will get “ample opportunity” to buy GM shares, but institutional investors such as mutual funds, hedge funds and pension funds will be sought out, the statement said. “We expect that a large and diverse group of institutional investors will be offered an opportunity to participate, with no single investor or group of investors receiving

ZHENGZHOU – Japan’s Nissan Motor Co Ltd plans to double its production capacity in China to 1.2 million units by 2012, as it aims for a 10 percent share of the world’s biggest auto market. The new plan is 20 percent above Nissan’s earlier target, underscoring the car maker’s strong interest in China, which has been a major bright spot for many automakers as the global industry struggles to recover from a steep downturn. Nissan, 44 percent held by France’s Renault SA, runs an auto venture with Dongfeng Motor Group Co Ltd, which on Monday announced the opening of its first sport utility vehicle (SUV) plant in the central Chinese city of Zhengzhou. “Among the Japanese carmakers, which represent 20 percent of total sales in China, Nissan holds the number one position,” Chief Executive Carlos Ghosn said at the opening ceremony for its new SUV plant. “Still, we believe we have the potential to earn a higher market share through our partnerships with Dongfeng and Zhengzhou Nissan. Our current objective is 10 percent.” said Ghosn. Nissan is now the top-selling Japanese automaker in China,

Although many automakers were confident that China’s auto sales could rise about 25 percent to 17 million units this year, some

analysts were a bit cautious. “There are not many sales forecasts for next year and the golden week (starting on Oct 1) sales will be critical,” said Jonny Wong, an analyst at Yuanta Research. “Forecasts of 17 million unit sales this year could be a bit high,” he added. Nissan said the new SUV plant in Zhengzhou has a total investment of 1 billion yuan ($148.7 million), and will be run by Zhengzhou Nissan Co Ltd, a joint venture between Nissan and Dongfeng. The new plant would have an annual capacity of 180,000 units and together with Zhengzhou Nissan’s first plant, the company’s total production volume would reach 240,000 units by 2012 after the expansion, Zhengzhou-Nissan said in a statement. “The Zhengzhou Nissan plants — currently our base for light commercial vehicles and sport utility vehicles — now comprise our second-largest production site in China after Huadu,” Ghosn said in the statement. The company will not sell any shares of common stock, leaving that to the government and its three other shareholders. But it plans to sell preferred stock, which pays a dividend and will be converted to common shares in 2013. Chrysler’s top executive, CEO Sergio Marchionne, said last week he expects Chrysler’s IPO to take place in the second half of next year. Chrysler got $12.5 billion in bailout money from the government in exchange for $7.1 billion in loans and a 9.9 percent ownership stake.

DETROIT – When “NYPD Blue” veteran James McDaniel signed on for a new ABC cop show called “Detroit 1-8-7,” he served as cheerleader-in-chief in the creators’ campaign to shoot in the Motor City. The actor figured they didn’t stand a chance because it had never been done. But he craved the authenticity of being in the downtrodden city — far from traditional acting hubs and his beloved New York — even if it meant suffering for his art. McDaniel was floored on both fronts: The network brass approved filming the show in Detroit, and he found the city to be both inviting and inspiring. “We get here, and imagine my surprise: My wife and I actually love it. We really get it,” he said while waiting to shoot a scene on a weedpocked parking lot near downtown. The first network television drama to set up shop full time in Detroit is discovering a city that goes beyond its Rust Belt reputation. And its writers, producers and actors hope the struggling town is a secret weapon for “Detroit 1-8-7” as it prepares to enter the crowded market of crime procedurals. High-tech cow earrings mark new path for Brazil Reuters

PORTO ALEGRE, Brazil – Years after India broke into the hi-tech business with information technology and China by way of manufacturing, Brazil may find its entrance in an unusual place — a cow’s ear. The South American giant is preparing to use its first locally-designed microchip in cattle earrings, a device that could eventually help authorities crack down on destruction of the Amazon rain forest caused by roaming herds. Produced by state-funded firm Ceitec, the “Chip do Boi” or “Cow Chip” is part of homegrown innovation efforts that Brazil hopes will help it overcome challenges in its sprawling economy and over time make it an exporter of niche technology. While commodity exports and increasingly affluent consumers have made Brazil’s economy an emerging-markets darling alongside China and India in recent years, it trails those nations in the high-value areas of technology and science. “Brazil has competitive advantages in areas like agriculture and clean energy, and it

makes sense for the country to maintain those advantages through technological innovation,” said Ceitec chief executive Cylon Silva, a theoretical physicist with a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley. “There’s no way that a country of Brazil’s size and influence can go without an electronics industry.” The company opened in 2008 with a $500 million reais ($290 million) investment from the government, which Silva says was crucial because private investors would have seen the first-time venture as too risky. Engineers at Ceitec don space-age looking sanitary outfits known as “bunny suits” complete with face masks to keep dust and particles out of specialized labs filled with hightech machinery that slice silicon wafers with molecular precision. The cattle trackers can help ranchers demonstrate their cows have not been exposed to illnesses and may be crucial for creating a database of cattle showing which animals grazed on recently deforested land. Brazil’s state development bank said last year it will begin requiring the ranchers it finances to show where their cattle have grazed, possibly using such devices.

MADRID - Champions Barcelona got their title bid back on track with a 2-1 win over bogey side Atletico Madrid at the Vicente Calderon on Sunday to stay within three points of league leaders Valencia. Barcelona, humiliated 2-0 by Hercules in their last league outing, had lost their last two trips to the Calderon but first-half goals from Argentine Lionel Messi and Spain World Cup star Gerard Pique inflicted a first defeat of the season on Atletico. “We missed several chances and their goalkeeper (David) de Gea had a great game,” said Barcelona striker David Villa. “In the end the two goals were enough and this is an important win although we have no time to rest as there is another match on Wednesday (against Sporting Gijon).” It was Barca coach Pep Guardiola’s first win at Atletico, who had a maximum six points before kick-off and his side climbed to fifth a point behind Real Madrid and three points off Valencia. His joy, however, was tempered by seeing Messi stretchered off in the final minute after having his ankle kicked by Czech defender Tomasz Ujfalusi, who was sent off for the tackle. Messi is expected to be out for a fortnight after doctors confirmed ligament damage to his right ankle. Earlier Valencia replaced Real Madrid at the top of La Liga winning 2-1 at promoted Hercules to

make it a perfect nine-point start to the season. Valencia lie two points ahead of Real and Sevilla who came from behind to win 2-1 at Malaga on Sunday thanks to goals from Alejandro Alfaro and Martin Caceres. It was Atletico’s second defeat in a week following their 1-0 Europa League loss to Aris Salonica, however they stay third in the league above Barcelona on goal difference. Barcelona were on a high after their 5-1 thrashing of Panathinaikos in the Champions League and had a full strength team with eight Spanish World Cup winners in the starting XI. Atletico received a boost with forward Sergio “Kun” Aguero shrugging off a knock to start. Barca took the lead on 13 minutes when Messi flicked the ball into the corner of the net with the outside of his boot after being fed by Pedro Rodriguez. Atletico responded quickly and were level in the 25th minute when Raul Garcia headed in a Simao corner after goalkeeper Victor Valdes had mis-timed his punch. Barca took seven minutes to restore their lead with defender Pique finishing like a striker, controlling a Messi corner on his chest and drilling a low shot into the corner for his first goal of the season.

Xavi and Pedro forced Atletico goalkeeper de Gea, only 19 but being tipped for a bright future, to produce two smart saves early in the second half. Villa could have killed the game off but fired over on 73 minutes and was denied by the terrific de Gea in a oneon-one minutes later. “Victor Valdes (the Barcelona goalkeeper) came to congratulate me after the game,” said de Gea. “The truth is that Barcelona were superior and we couldn’t do anything.” Atletico’s Ujfalusi was sent off in the dying seconds for hacking down Messi who clutched his ankle on going down and left the field on a stretcher. Hercules won 2-0 at Barca last time out but goals from Spanish international Juan Mata and Pablo Hernandez were enough for Valencia, who played most of the second half with ten men following the dismissal of defender David Navarro. Villarreal climbed up to fifth with a 2-1 win at promoted Levante on Sunday. Brazilian international striker Nilmar scored a first half brace for Villarreal who sit a point behind thirdplaced Real.

PARIS - French league giants Lyon were handed a wake-up call Sunday thanks to a 2-0 defeat to Bordeaux which left the former seven-time consecutive champions fourth from bottom of the table. Lyon midfielder Yoann Gourcuff had provided much of the prematch buzz following his shock move to the Stade Gerland from Bordeaux two weeks ago. But despite calmly brushing off the jeers of some disgruntled fans, the versatile France international failed to light up a match which left his new coach, Claude Puel, covering his face in despair. In the end, goals by Bordeaux midfielder Alou Diarra and a lastminute gem from Brazilian striker Jussie left Lyon with only one win, and five points, from six games. Like many of the so-called big French clubs, Lyon included, Bordeaux’s start to the 2010 campaign had struggled to take off. This was only their second win in six games, and they are still eighth from bottom in a table dominated by former French and European giants Saint-Etienne, who share 13 points with Toulouse but lead by virtue of superior goals difference. After sweeping aside Lyon, who won the title seven years in succession from 2002-2008, Girondins coach Jean Tigana will be hoping they have turned the corner. Bordeaux opened the scoring

Uchiyama defends WBA super featherweight title Agence France Presse

SAITAMA - Japan’s Takashi Uchiyama fended off a challenge from Roy Mukhlis of Indonesia by a technical knockout to defend his World Boxing Association super featherweight title on Monday. The knockout came two minutes 27 seconds into the fifth round when the 30-year-old champion hit a powerful right hook and went for it to flatten Mukhlis, forcing the referee to stop the bout. “I knew he (Mukhlis) had lost his concentration after I hit his stomach. CAIRNS, Australia - Belgium won both the reverse singles to defeat Australia 3-2 on Monday to retain their place in the 2011 Davis Cup World Group. The 117thranked Steve Darcis overcame Australian Carsten Ball, 7-6 (7/4), 6-3, 6-4 in the fifth and deciding singles rubber in two hours 23 minutes, to hand the Belgians victory after they had trailed 2-1 following their doubles loss on Saturday. The stage was set for Belgium’s comeback when their number one designated player Olivier Rochus held out Peter Luczak 7-6 (10/8), 6-

4, 6-7 (0/7), 7-6 (7/2) in almost four and a half hours earlier on Monday. Floyd Landis slams world road championships organisers Agence France Presse

SYDNEY – Disgraced American cyclist Floyd Landis has slammed world road championships organisers in Australia after they withdrew their support for a conference he is listed to attend. Landis was stripped of his 2006 Tour de France title for doping and earlier this year admitted using performance-enhancing drugs. However, he was scheduled to speak at the “New Pathways For Pro Cycling” conference which takes place in Geelong, south of Melbourne, later this month on the eve of the world titles in the same town. The meeting originally had the support of the world championships organisers but a spokesman for the championships confirmed at the weekend that it had withdrawn its backing, saying they did not want to give Landis a “soapbox”. Landis posted a statement on the conference website explaining his motives. “To be clear, I do not wish to use the conference as a soapbox, nor do I

wish to hijack the world championships,” he said. “Indeed, the behaviour and comments of the persons and organisations that seek to shut down the conference as a consequence of my participation demonstrate that they are interested only in selfishly perpetuating their own positions and purported authority at the expense of progressive reform. “(They have a) total disregard of the sport’s long-term interests, including those of the riders and fans, which they are charged to protect. “By offering an inside perspective of an athlete confronted with decisions regarding the use of banned performance-enhancing drugs, I hope to be able to contribute to a better understanding of how those decisions come to be made, and how athletes can be better supported by those in a position to facilitate better decisions and decisionmaking.” The UCI Road World Championships, which take place from September 29 to October 3, are being held in Australia for the first time.

Stoner relieved to end win drought Casey Stoner wins at AragonCasey Stoner said it was “a big relief” to finally score his first win of the season in the inaugural Aragon MotoGP. The Australian Ducati rider dominated the race from his second pole position of the year, after getting the better of championship leader Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha) in a first-lap fight. He was chased hard thereafter by local Honda man Dani Pedrosa, but always looked in control and recorded a comfortable five-second victory. “It’s a big relief to be honest,” said Stoner. “We had the first race [in Qatar] almost wrapped up until I made a mistake and there have been a couple of other moments through the year where we might’ve

been in with a chance of a victory but it’s just been a mistake on my part.” The Aussie praised a set-up overhaul on his Ducati machine for allowing him to return to the top of the MotoGP pile. “We’ve been struggling this year to get the bike set up well and really have it there on pace. We’ve been close to Jorge and Dani but two or three tenths a lap [slower] and it’s almost impossible for me to make that difference. “This weekend we tried something completely different for us. Since my operation I noticed my

body position is not in the right area. We changed the bike completely and since then we’ve had a much better feeling with the front end. We were able to get the bike working almost the way we wanted it to.” Stoner admitted that his crash in this morning’s warm-up had weighed on his mind prior to the start. “I had a little slip off this morning, which was a little bit worrying going into the race,” he said. “I was staying away from every white line I could. I didn’t want to get too close. “But we were able to pick up the pace when we needed to during the race and bring home a win for the team and for everyone who’s stuck by me. Sorry it took so long.”

Lorenzo not panicking over title JORGE Lorenzo says he is not panicking about Yamaha’s disappointing current form and would rather be defending a points lead on a slower bike than having to close a gap on a faster bike. Having dominated the early part of the season, Yamaha has slipped behind main rivals Honda and Ducati in recent weeks, and at Aragon last weekend it could only finish fourth and sixth with Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi - the first time Lorenzo has missed the podium all year. Yamaha’s main weakness has been a relative lack of straightline speed, and Lorenzo said that poor traction made this particularly acute

at the new Spanish venue. “From the beginning of the weekend we had problems with traction,” he explained. “We had a lot of wheelspin from the middle to the exit of the corners. “The performance of the tyre went down very quickly and very much. Normally I am stronger and stronger every lap.” He added: “It’s obvious that the Yamaha now is not the strongest bike on the grid. But it’s not so bad. I want to return to victories. For now, it’s difficult.” Lorenzo has now finished behind title rival Dani Pedrosa (Honda) in three straight races - but his points lead has only come down from 77 to 56 points in that time, meaning

Pedrosa still has to make bigger gains if he is to snatch the title in the remaining five rounds. That has left Lorenzo feeling relatively confident about his position, even if he does have to defend a dwindling advantage on a less competitive bike for now. He hopes that a new engine expected for Motegi can also help get him back on terms. “I’m not worried, because [worrying] doesn’t give me more speed,” he said. “For sure I’d prefer to have 56 points’ advantage than not to. I’d prefer to have this [points gap] with a slower bike than to have the fastest bike. So we hope for the new engine and we’ll see what happens.”
