LOS ANGELES - Madonna memorabilia including nude photographs of the Queen of Pop will go on sale in November at an auction that will also include some of her most famous outfits and some of her lyrics. The Marilyn Monroe-inspired gown and jewelry that Madonna donned in her 1984 “Material Girl” music video will also be up for grabs, Beverly Hills-based Julien’s Auctions said Tuesday. Highest bidders will also be able to take home some of the many awards won by Madonna, as well as handwritten notes on concert choreography
and working lyrics. The personal and professional collection includes a day planner from 1988 in which Madonna jotted down notes on everything from dates with her then-husband Sean Penn to an appearance on “Late Night with David Letterman.” More risque are negatives and prints of nude photographs taken of the diva for Penthouse magazine. Smith, under her real name of Vickie Lynn Marshall, challenged the will, claiming that her husband promised to leave her more than $300 million above the cash and gifts showered on her during their 14-month marriage. DENPASAR - Representative office of Bank Indonesia (BI) for Region III Bali-Nusra continues to promote transactions by using e-money or electronic money to suppress the circulation of fake money. In the past two months, namely April to May 2014, the number of fake banknotes reached 579 sheets. This amount is experiencing a surge from 265 sheets in April to 314 sheets in May. “They are just the detected amount. It excludes the amount that has not been detected by banks and police. We have confidence if the real amount is more than this. On that account, BI is seriously
working on the electronic money,” said Chief of Representative Office of Bank Indonesia for Region III Bali-Nusra, Benny Siswanto, in Denpasar, recently. He said that his party encour-
aged the public to use electronic money as an alternative to the use of banknotes and coins especially for a small fraction. “With the e-money, people are no need to carry cash. Simply take out the card to perform the transaction,” he said. Benny hoped that banks continued to actively intensify the dissemination of e-money in Bali. He claimed the e-money on the Island of the Gods had just been used for ticket payment when passing the Bali toll road. “At this time, the electronic money is issued by some banks, such as BRI, Mandiri and
BCA,” he concluded. The use of electronic money, according to Benny Siswanto, had many advantages. Among them, people could make transactions just by using the card, so that they were not bothered anymore to carry money physically. This lifestyle was better known as the less cash society (LCS). “LCS is all financial transactions or payments using electronic money to replace cash transactions. This method is also intended to avoid the risk of counterfeit money,” he said.
To lessen the circulation of counterfeit money in Bali, Benny Siswanto also continued to provide socialization on the characteristics of the authenticity of rupiahs to community, including cashiers. In the effort to maintain the quality of banknotes in circulation to public and maintain the money supply in a decent condition, Bank Indonesia for Region III sustainably destroyed the damaged or worn banknotes. Bali News TABANAN - Tabanan County is ranked fifth in the HIV case in Bali after Denpasar, Buleleng, Badung and Gianyar. As of June 2014, the HIV/AIDS case in the Tabanan has been recorded to reach 607 cases. In terms of age, most HIV cases in Tabanan belong to the range of 30-39 years old for 211 cases, while the age range of 20-29 amounted to 198 cases. HIV case in Tabanan was also discovered at the age of less than one year with a total of 8 people. For the year 2014, a pregnant woman was found to be HIV-positive. It was presented by the Head of Tabanan Health Agency, Nyoman Suratmika, when met on Tuesday (Aug 19). According to him, the pregnant woman known to be HIV positive was currently undergoing a program of Prevention of Mother To Child Transfer (PMTCT). This program had been proved effective in Preventing HIV transmission from mother to fetus. “There are cases of couple living with HIV/AIDS that gives birth to a baby with HIV negative after joining the PMTCT program,” said Suratmika.
To prevent the HIV infection from mother and her child, the Tabanan Health Agency also implemented counseling to pregnant women every making regular check up. “From the counseling, it will be known whether she includes in the high risk of HIV. When categorized into high risk, she will be encouraged to test for HIV,” said Suratmika. To facilitate the public in accessing the VCT services, according to Suratmika, every community health center in Tabanan would have the VCT. “Every community health center has been equipped with one counselor for providing VCT services,” said Suratmika. The spread of HIV in Tabanan was mostly caused by heterosexual contact risk factor (544 cases), perinatal risk factor (31 cases), injection drug users (21 cases), homosexuals (7 cases) and unknown (4 cases). Large amount of HIV cases due to transactional heterosexual relationships was not denied by Suratmika. Current advances in technology made sexual transactions easier and more difficult to be controlled. “People can make transaction through BBM and SMS,” he said. (kmb24)

NEGARA - Two junior high school girls from Genteng, Banyuwangi, almost became the victims as to be employed as café waitress at Delod Berawah, Mendoyo. The ranks of Jembrana Police Criminal Investigator had secured the two minors after making coordination with the Banyuwangi Police. On Tuesday afternoon, police also secured Fitri, 18, from Banyuwangi alleged to have abducted the two minors to be further employed at café. A, 15, and H, 15, admitted on Sunday (Aug 17) that they were invited by Fitri to one of social gathering events at Karangrejo village, Banyuwangi. However, they were even taken to Bali. They arrived at Delod Berawah village on Sunday afternoon and left in a dorm room.
After that, they met with M having the profession as a DJ at Café Ag. By M, they were informed that they would be employed. Being afraid, the two teenagers asked for help from M and finally on Tuesday dawn police picked up the two victims. On the other hand, in Banyuwangi there was a report on missing children having exactly the same characteristics as the two victims. Chief of Jembrana Police Criminal Investigation, Gusti Made Sudarma Putra, with permission from the Chief of Jembrana Police said on Wednesday (Aug 19) that the victims and the perpetrator had been secured in Jembrana Police. Elementary schools in Gianyar not received compulsory textbooks

GIANYAR - Late printing of the compulsory textbooks of curriculum 2013 is not only experienced by schools in Jakarta, but also in Gianyar. The entire elementary schools in Gianyar have not received any compulsory textbooks ordered by the Gianyar Education Agency. Meanwhile, junior and senior high/vocational school has just received 70 percent of the total of textbooks. The Head of Gianyar Education Agency, Dewa Alit Muliartha, explained last Tuesday that such condition did not happen due to the problem in the region. Instead the printing company designated by the Ministry of Education and Culture indeed had not sent the textbook, especially for elementary schools throughout Gianyar. Even, the delay occurred throughout the regions in Bali. “It does not only occur in Gianyar, but also the entire schools in Bali. The problem is the same, equally has not received the delivery from printing company,” he said. Alit Muliartha said the Gianyar Education Agency had already submitted the amount of books required
for elementary, junior and high school/vocational school since the beginning of June. Due to new curriculum had started in this new academic year, schools finally decided to print the textbook from the soft copy (CD) having been given previously. It was carried out by using the budget taken from the School Operational Assistance (BOS). “Other regions also experience similar case, namely receiving CD from central government,” he explained. Meanwhile, 70 percent of the textbooks for junior high, high school and vocational school required had arrived in Gianyar and distributed to respective school. Meanwhile, 30 percent of the textbooks having not been received
belonged to teacher handbook. “The textbooks for junior high, senior high and vocational school have been received of about 70 percent. However, I do not remember the exact amount because it has been handled by separate division,” he explained. When asked about the initial implementation of the new curriculum in Gianyar, he said that so far there had been no complaints from teachers. Prior to the implementation of the curriculum, all the teachers had got training, including the training prepared by the Gianyar Education Agency. “Although there has been no complaint, we will continue to monitor if there are obstacles found in the field,” he said. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Excess body weight boosts risk of 10 common cancers

PARIS - Being overweight boosts the risk of 10 common cancers, said a study of five million UK adults that prompted a call Thursday for tougher anti-obesity measures. Researchers calculated that 12,000 cases of these 10 cancers every year in the UK were attributable to excess body weight. And if current trends continue, “there could be over 3,500 extra cancers every year as a result,” said a statement issued with the study, the largest of its kind, published in The Lancet medical journal. Measured as a ratio of weight in kilogrammes-to-height in metres squared, a body mass index (BMI) of 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight, and 30 plus as obese. “Each five kg/m2 increase in BMI
was clearly linked with higher risk of cancers of the uterus (62 percent increase), gallbladder (31 percent), kidney (25 percent), cervix (10 percent), thyroid (nine percent), and leukaemia (nine percent),” said a statement. Higher BMI also increased the overall risk of cancer of the liver (19 percent), colon (10 percent), ovaries (nine percent) and breast (five percent), although the effect on these four types was influenced by other factors. Even within normal height-toweight ranges, people with higher BMI numbers were more at risk, the
researchers found. Conversely, those with high BMI seemed to be at a slightly lower risk of developing prostate and premenopausal breast cancer. The researchers used patient records on a nationwide data network and identified 5.24 million individuals aged 16 and older who were cancerfree when they were first registered. Their health status was followed for an average 7.5 years, during which period nearly 167,000 in the group developed some form of cancer. “There was a lot of variation in the effects of BMI on different cancers,”
said study leader Krishnan Bhaskaran of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. “For example, risk of cancer of the uterus increased substantially at higher body mass index; for other cancers we saw more modest increases in risk, or no effect at all. “For some cancers like breast cancer occurring in younger women before the menopause, there even seemed to be a lower risk at higher BMI.” The team said excess body weight may account for 41 percent of uterine and 10 percent or more of gallbladder, kidney, liver and colon cancers in the UK. Commenting on the findings, Peter Campbell from the American Cancer Society in Atlanta highlighted the
need for policy changes to curb excess weight and obesity, a growing global problem. These could include taxes on foods like sugar-sweetened drinks that are high in calories but low in nutrition, subsidies for healthier alternatives, and urban planning that encourages walking and other forms of exercise. Earlier this week, another study in The Lancet said two in five American adults are expected to develop type 2 diabetes -- a form of the disease caused mainly by physical inactivity and excess body weight. Being overweight also puts people at a higher risk of heart disease and stroke. A recent global analysis found that a third of adults and a quarter of children today are overweight.

Body of tourist found in suitcase flown back to US

DENPASAR - The body of an American tourist who was brutally killed and stuffed into a suitcase on the Indonesian resort island of Bali has been flown back to the United States, police said Wednesday. Sheila von Wiese Mack, 62, was found in the suitcase in the boot of a taxi in front of an exclusive hotel in the upscale Nusa Dua resort area last week. Her daughter and daughter’s boyfriend, who had been staying with her, have been arrested over the killing and could face the death penalty if found guilty of premedi-
tated murder. Police said that the body was flown back to the US overnight Tuesday to Wednesday. The victim’s daughter, Heather Mack, 19, and daughter’s boyfriend, Tommy Schaefer, 21, have been named suspects in the killing and remain in detention on the resort island.

The findings came under immediate attack by other scientists. Limiting salt is still important for people with high blood pressure — and in fact, a second study estimates that too much sodium contributes to up to 1.65 million deaths each year. The studies both have strengths and weaknesses, and come as the U.S. government is preparing to nudge industry to trim sodium in processed and restaurant foods. The first study’s leader, Dr. Salim Yusuf of McMaster University’s Population Health Research Institute in Hamilton, Ontario, urged keeping an open mind. “There are those who have made a career out of promoting extreme sodium reduction that will attack us,” he said. It’s better to focus on healthy lifestyles and overall diets instead of a single element, “and
that is something everyone can rally around.” No one should view this as permission to eat more salt, he said, adding that “most people should stay where they are.” Yusuf’s is observational, rather than a strict experiment, and has big limitations in its methods. But its size lends strength — more than 100,000 people in 17 countries, the largest on this topic. It’s also from a general population, not just people at high risk of heart disease, as many past studies have been. Guidelines from various groups for heart disease prevention recommend 1.5 to 2.4 grams of sodium a day. The American Heart Association advises no more than 1.5 grams. “These are now the best data available,” Dr. Brian Strom said of the new study. Strom, the chancellor of Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences, led an Institute of Medicine panel last year that found little evidence to support very low sodium levels. “Too-high sodium is bad. Too low also may be bad, and sodium isn’t the whole story,” Strom said.
“People should go for moderation.” The study was sponsored by the McMaster institute, nonprofit and government groups and industry, but funders had no role in running it. The countries included Canada but not the United States; China accounted for 42 percent of participants. About 40 percent had high blood pressure. Dr. Martin O’Donnell of McMaster University, one of the researchers, said potatoes, bananas, avocados, leafy greens, nuts, apricots, salmon and mushrooms are high in potassium, and “it’s easier for people to add things to their diet than to take away” something like salt.

The BPS office said Bali’s imports in the first half of 2014 reached US$162.7 million, a 65 percent increase compared with US$98.4 million in the same period last year. The office noted that US$115 million of Bali’s imports in the first half of 2014 came from China, and the rest from the United States, South Korea, Hong Kong, Australia and other countries.

TOKYO — A 111-year-old retired Japanese educator who enjoys poetry has been recognized as the world’s oldest living man. Sakari Momoi received a certificate from Guinness World Records on Wednesday. He succeeds Alexander Imich of New York, who died in June at the age of 111 years, 164 days. The world’s oldest living person is also Japanese: Misao Okawa, a 116-year-old woman from Osaka. Momoi was born Feb. 5, 1903, in Fukushima prefecture, where he became a teacher. He moved to the

KIEV — Nine troops were killed in overnight fighting in the streets of a town neighboring the rebel stronghold of Donetsk, a Ukrainian official said Wednesday, as the government battled to gain control of a major railroad and highway linking the area to Russia. Government efforts to quell the pro-Russia insurgency in eastern Ukraine are focused on encircling Donetsk and driving rebels out of the city of Luhansk. Andriy Lysenko, spokesman for the Ukrainian National Security Council, said Wednesday nine soldiers of two volunteer battalions were killed in fighting in Ilovaysk overnight. Twenty-two were injured. Volunteer battalions recruited from around Ukraine have proven
essential in the government offensive against armed separatists in the mainly Russian-speaking east. Fighting is continuing in Ilovaysk after more than a day of hostilities although government forces have gained overall control over the town, Lysenko said. Ilovaysk lies on a major railroad and a highway which connects the regional capital of Donetsk to the Russian border to the south-east. The Kiev government also has pursued diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict, which has killed more than 2,000 people and displaced 300,000. The Ukrainian president hosts the German chancellor this weekend before meeting next week with Russia’s president in what could be the first meeting between the two leaders since June.

effectively, such as developing policies and institutions that will support inclusive and fair development. “Ultimately, ASEAN’s plan for greater regional integration will be judged on how much it benefits ordinary working men and women in the region,” Uramoto noted.
To counter development inequality, there is an urgent need to improve the quality, coverage, and sustainability of social protection, starting with the establishment of a social protection floor for all. Jamaliah and her husband Septi Rangkuti had an emotional reunion Monday with the teenager they believe is their long-lost son, bringing their whole family together for the first time in 10 years. Arif Pratama Rangkuti, now 17, was carried off with his younger sister when the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami slammed into Indonesia’s westernmost Aceh province, killing more than 170,000 people there and tens of thousands in other countries. Arif’s sister Raudhatul Jannah was reunited with the parents in June after a relative spotted a girl in an Aceh village who bore a striking
resemblance to her. On Tuesday the couple said their son had now also been returned, thanks to this month’s huge media coverage of their “miracle” reunion with their daughter. “It’s true, he’s our son. We’re now preparing to take him home,” Rangkuti told AFP, explaining that the boy had lived for years as a street kid on the island of Sumatra. Jamaliah, speaking in the town of Payakumbuh in West Sumatra province, wept as she clutched the teenager, who seemed shy and overwhelmed. “I prayed every night, because inside I believed that my child was still alive,” she told reporters. The family were reunited at the home of a couple who found the boy one night asleep outside the Internet cafe they run in Payakumbuh. GOLD COAST, Australia — Michael Phelps got a confronting reminder of just how challenging his return to international competition may be when he was asked whether he was good enough to even reach a final at the Pan Pacific Championships this week. “Wow, you’re really setting the bar high for me!” the most decorated swimmer of all time joked in reply. Sitting beside him at a news conference Wednesday, Phelps’ long-time coach Bob Bowman chipped in: “Reality check there.” The Pan Pacs start Thursday and run through the weekend. It’s stage two of Phelps’ comeback from retirement — the first was qualifying for the U.S. team. Now Bowman is predicting Phelps will lower his best times in his butterfly, medley and freestyle, saying the challenge of going faster was the only reason the 18-time Olympic champion came back to the sport. Phelps qualified by finishing second in the 200-meter medley and the 100 butterfly at the U.S. nationals, and will be swimming in his first international meet since coming out of retirement four months ago with the aim of competing again at the world titles and Olympics. Only the top two swimmers from each country qualify for the finals, so Phelps is going to be under pressure from his American teammates in the morning
preliminaries, and from the best swimmers from Australia, Japan, Canada, Brazil and other Pacific countries in the evening finals. FIFA, Russia relations hit rough spot
GENEVA — Relations between FIFA and its next World Cup host, Russia, are under strain. Two major issues have flared since July 13, when Russian state President Vladimir Putin sat next to FIFA President Sepp Blatter at the World Cup final in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: Control of Crimean football clubs and expensive new stadiums for FIFA’s flagship tournament. Attempts by the Russian football authorities to integrate three clubs from Crimea this season — without consent from Ukraine — have escalated tensions between the two countries’ football federations, which are both members of FIFA and UEFA. Though the game’s world and European governing bodies have reason to at least warn the Russian Football Union of disciplinary action, neither has taken that step. GENEVA — Relations between FIFA and its next World Cup host, Russia, are under strain. Two major issues have flared since July 13, when Russian state President Vladimir Putin sat next to FIFA President Sepp Blatter at the World Cup final in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: Control of Crimean football clubs and expensive new stadiums for FIFA’s flagship tournament. Attempts by the Russian football authorities to integrate three clubs from Crimea this season — without consent from Ukraine — have escalated tensions between the two countries’ football federations, which are both members of FIFA and UEFA. GOLD COAST, Australia — Michael Phelps got a confronting reminder of just how challenging his return to international competition may be when he was asked whether he was good enough to even reach a final at the Pan Pacific Championships this week. “Wow, you’re really setting the bar high for me!” the most decorated swimmer of all time joked in reply. Sitting beside him at a news conference Wednesday, Phelps’ long-time coach Bob Bowman chipped in: “Reality check there.” The Pan Pacs start Thursday and run through the weekend. It’s stage two of Phelps’ comeback from retirement — the first was qualifying for the U.S. team. Now Bowman is predicting Phelps will lower his best times in his butterfly, medley and freestyle, saying the challenge of going faster was the only reason the 18-time Olympic champion came back to the sport. Phelps qualified by finishing second in the 200-meter medley and the 100 butterfly at the U.S. nationals, and will be swimming in his first international meet since coming out of retirement four months ago with the aim of competing again at the world titles and Olympics. Only the top two swimmers from each country qualify for the finals, so Phelps is going to be under pressure from his American teammates in the morning
preliminaries, and from the best swimmers from Australia, Japan, Canada, Brazil and other Pacific countries in the evening finals. He’ll start with the 100 freestyle on Friday, which will feature seven Americans in the heats. He’ll also contest the 100 butterfly, the 200 medley and potentially some relays. Phelps didn’t win any of his four events at the U.S. nationals, although his times in the 200 IM and the butterfly were both among the fastest three in the world this year. He was unhappy with his freestyle, where his finish let him down. He said it was the kind of mistake an 11-year-old would make. 111-year-old from Japan recognized as oldest man Associated Press
TOKYO — A 111-year-old retired Japanese educator who enjoys poetry has been recognized as the world’s oldest living man. Sakari Momoi received a certificate from Guinness World Records on Wednesday. He succeeds Alexander Imich of New York, who died in June at the age of 111 years, 164 days. The world’s oldest living person is also Japanese: Misao Okawa, a 116-year-old woman from Osaka. Momoi was born Feb. 5, 1903, in Fukushima prefecture, where he became a teacher. He moved to the
city of Saitama, north of Tokyo, after World War II and was a high school principal there until retirement. At the televised ceremony, Momoi wore a dark suit and silver tie, with his white hair neatly combed. He stood up from his wheelchair and moved to a chair next to it with little assistance. Asked how he felt about the record, Momoi pushed his back upright and said he wants to live longer. “Say, another two years,” he said. Momoi said he enjoys reading books, especially Chinese poetry, and sometimes practices calligraphy. He said there is no special trick for his longevity, but his caregivers say Momoi keeps early hours and eats healthy, according to NHK public television. He has five children and lives at a nursing home in Tokyo. Momoi is one of 54,000 centenarians in Japan. The country is the fastest aging in the world and has the highest average life expectancy — 80.21 for men and 86.61 for women.

KIEV — Nine troops were killed in overnight fighting in the streets of a town neighboring the rebel stronghold of Donetsk, a Ukrainian official said Wednesday, as the government battled to gain control of a major railroad and highway linking the area to Russia. Government efforts to quell the pro-Russia insurgency in eastern Ukraine are focused on encircling Donetsk and driving rebels out of the city of Luhansk. Andriy Lysenko, spokesman for the Ukrainian National Security Council, said Wednesday nine soldiers of two volunteer battalions were killed in fighting in Ilovaysk overnight. Twenty-two were injured. Volunteer battalions recruited from around Ukraine have proven
essential in the government offensive against armed separatists in the mainly Russian-speaking east. Fighting is continuing in Ilovaysk after more than a day of hostilities although government forces have gained overall control over the town, Lysenko said. Ilovaysk lies on a major railroad and a highway which connects the regional capital of Donetsk to the Russian border to the south-east. The Kiev government also has pursued diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict, which has killed more than 2,000 people and displaced 300,000. effectively, such as developing policies and institutions that will support inclusive and fair development. “Ultimately, ASEAN’s plan for greater regional integration will be judged on how much it benefits ordinary working men and women in the region,” Uramoto noted.

And top officials even launched personal attacks on Secretary of State John Kerry when he tried to mediate a cease-fire, accusing him of offering too much to Hamas. PARIS - Being overweight boosts the risk of 10 common cancers, said a study of five million UK adults that prompted a call Thursday for tougher anti-obesity measures. Researchers calculated that 12,000 cases of these 10 cancers every year in the UK were attributable to excess body weight. And if current trends continue, “there could be over 3,500 extra cancers every year as a result,” said a statement issued with the study, the largest of its kind, published in The Lancet medical journal. Measured as a ratio of weight in kilogrammes-to-height in metres squared, a body mass index (BMI) of 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight, and 30 plus as obese. “Each five kg/m2 increase in BMI
was clearly linked with higher risk of cancers of the uterus (62 percent increase), gallbladder (31 percent), kidney (25 percent), cervix (10 percent), thyroid (nine percent), and leukaemia (nine percent),” said a statement. Higher BMI also increased the overall risk of cancer of the liver (19 percent), colon (10 percent), ovaries (nine percent) and breast (five percent), although the effect on these four types was influenced by other factors. Even within normal height-toweight ranges, people with higher BMI numbers were more at risk, the
researchers found. Conversely, those with high BMI seemed to be at a slightly lower risk of developing prostate and premenopausal breast cancer. The researchers used patient records on a nationwide data network and identified 5.24 million individuals aged 16 and older who were cancerfree when they were first registered. Their health status was followed for an average 7.5 years, during which period nearly 167,000 in the group developed some form of cancer. “There was a lot of variation in the effects of BMI on different cancers,”
said study leader Krishnan Bhaskaran of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. “For example, risk of cancer of the uterus increased substantially at higher body mass index; for other cancers we saw more modest increases in risk, or no effect at all. “For some cancers like breast cancer occurring in younger women before the menopause, there even seemed to be a lower risk at higher BMI.” The team said excess body weight may account for 41 percent of uterine and 10 percent or more of gallbladder, kidney, liver and colon cancers in the UK. Commenting on the findings, Peter Campbell from the American Cancer Society in Atlanta highlighted the
need for policy changes to curb excess weight and obesity, a growing global problem. These could include taxes on foods like sugar-sweetened drinks that are high in calories but low in nutrition, subsidies for healthier alternatives, and urban planning that encourages walking and other forms of exercise. Earlier this week, another study in The Lancet said two in five American adults are expected to develop type 2 diabetes -- a form of the disease caused mainly by physical inactivity and excess body weight. Body of tourist found in suitcase flown back to US

DENPASAR - The body of an American tourist who was brutally killed and stuffed into a suitcase on the Indonesian resort island of Bali has been flown back to the United States, police said Wednesday. Sheila von Wiese Mack, 62, was found in the suitcase in the boot of a taxi in front of an exclusive hotel in the upscale Nusa Dua resort area last week. Her daughter and daughter’s boyfriend, who had been staying with her, have been arrested over the killing and could face the death penalty if found guilty of premedi-
tated murder. Police said that the body was flown back to the US overnight Tuesday to Wednesday. The victim’s daughter, Heather Mack, 19, and daughter’s boyfriend, Tommy Schaefer, 21, have been named suspects in the killing and remain in detention on the resort island.
US study questions need for most to cut salt

A large international study questions the conventional wisdom that most people should cut back on salt, suggesting that the amount most folks consume is OK for heart health — and too little may be as bad as too much. The findings came under immediate attack by other scientists. Limiting salt is still important for people with high blood pressure — and in fact, a second study estimates that too much sodium contributes to up to 1.65 million deaths each year. The studies both have strengths and weaknesses, and come as the U.S. government is preparing to nudge industry to trim sodium in processed and restaurant foods. The first study’s leader, Dr. Salim Yusuf of McMaster University’s Population Health Research Institute in Hamilton, Ontario, urged keeping an open mind. “There are those who have made a career out of promoting extreme sodium reduction that will attack us,” he said. It’s better to focus on healthy lifestyles and overall diets instead of a single element, “and
that is something everyone can rally around.” No one should view this as permission to eat more salt, he said, adding that “most people should stay where they are.” Yusuf’s is observational, rather than a strict experiment, and has big limitations in its methods. But its size lends strength — more than 100,000 people in 17 countries, the largest on this topic. It’s also from a general population, not just people at high risk of heart disease, as many past studies have been. Guidelines from various groups for heart disease prevention recommend 1.5 to 2.4 grams of sodium a day. The American Heart Association advises no more than 1.5 grams. “These are now the best data available,” Dr. Brian Strom said of the new study. Strom, the chancellor of Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences, led an Institute of Medicine panel last year that found little evidence to support very low sodium levels. “Too-high sodium is bad. Too low also may be bad, and sodium isn’t the whole story,” Strom said.
“People should go for moderation.” The study was sponsored by the McMaster institute, nonprofit and government groups and industry, but funders had no role in running it. The countries included Canada but not the United States; China accounted for 42 percent of participants. About 40 percent had high blood pressure. Sodium levels were estimated from a single urine test instead of the preferred method of over 24 hours at multiple times, which

That drew criticism from a host of scientists. “This is a fundamental flaw” that undermines confidence in the results, said Dr. Elliott Antman, a Brigham and Women’s Hospital cardiologist who is president of the Heart Association. Dr. Robert Eckel, a University of Colorado cardiologist and a former Heart Association president, said the single measure is a big limitation, but that researchers “did the
best they could” in such a large study and that the findings still have some merit. “I find the potassium data of great interest” for potentially lowering risk, he said. Dr. Martin O’Donnell of McMaster University, one of the researchers, said potatoes, bananas, avocados, leafy greens, nuts, apricots, salmon and mushrooms are high in potassium, and “it’s easier for people to add things to their diet than to take away” something like salt.
They were arrested the day after the killing at a hotel in another part of Bali. The victim and those arrested were all from the Chicago area. Police say they have strong evidence against the detained pair, and the FBI has sent an agent to join the probe. Under the Indonesian legal system, they will not be formally charged until they appear in court at the start of a trial. visited the resort island, did not intervene in the investigation into the murder of a US citizen, Sheila Von Weise, the Bali provincial police stated. “The FBI only gave information and assistance in the form of technical guidance, but we did not use it all at once. They did not intervene but continued to entrust Indonesian investigators,” spokesman of the Bali provincial police Senior Commissioner Hery Wiyanto remarked. It was normal to receive assistance from foreign countries during the investigation process, he affirmed. The FBI officer arrived in Bali last Friday. Mack’s U.S. attorney, Michael Elkin, said she has told him by phone from Indonesia that she’s been sexually assaulted at least three times in custody and was being drugged. “Heather stated in our last

conversation that she found what appeared to be needle marks on various areas of her body,” he said in a written statement, adding that she sounded dazed and incoherent at times. She’s also told him that she’s not getting enough water and that she is two months pregnant, he said. Elkin said in an interview Tuesday that he is concerned for Mack’s safety. Col. Djoko Hari Utomo, the police chief in Bali’s provincial capital, Denpasar, denied the sexual abuse claim. “We never treat her like that,” Utomo said. “We even treat her better than treatment for other detainees here.” Haposan Sihombing, an Indonesian lawyer assigned to accompany the couple, also denied the abuse allegations. Addressing her reported pregnancy, Utomo said she would be provided health care.

DENPASAR - Bali’s imports from China more than tripled to US$115.2 million in the first half of this year from US$27.2 million in the same period last year, according to the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) office in Bali. “It is reasonable that imported goods from China including capital goods, raw materials for small industries and various types of motorcycles flooded this tourist destination,” Ketut Mudiarta, a marketing officer of a motorcycle agent, said here on Sunday. It came as no surprise to hear that Chinese goods had flooded the Balinese market as most motorcycles sold in the province were imported from China, he said. The same was also true with Chinese electronic products such as laptops, mobile phones and accessories which were sold much in Denpasar city. The BPS office said Bali’s imports in the first half of 2014 reached US$162.7 million, a 65 percent increase compared with US$98.4 million in the same period last year. The office noted that US$115 million of Bali’s imports in the first half of 2014 came from China, and the rest from the United States, South Korea, Hong Kong, Australia and other countries.

Bali News TABANAN - Tabanan County is ranked fifth in the HIV case in Bali after Denpasar, Buleleng, Badung and Gianyar. As of June 2014, the HIV/AIDS case in the Tabanan has been recorded to reach 607 cases. In terms of age, most HIV cases in Tabanan belong to the range of 30-39 years old for 211 cases, while the age range of 20-29 amounted to 198 cases. HIV case in Tabanan was also discovered at the age of less than one year with a total of 8 people. For the year 2014, a pregnant woman was found to be HIV-positive. It was presented by the Head of Tabanan Health Agency, Nyoman Suratmika, when met on Tuesday (Aug 19). According to him, the pregnant woman known to be HIV positive was currently undergoing a program of Prevention of Mother To Child Transfer (PMTCT). This program had been proved effective in Preventing HIV transmission from mother to fetus. “There are cases of couple living with HIV/AIDS that gives birth to a baby with HIV negative after joining the PMTCT program,” said Suratmika.
To prevent the HIV infection from mother and her child, the Tabanan Health Agency also implemented counseling to pregnant women every making regular check up. “From the counseling, it will be known whether she includes in the high risk of HIV. When categorized into high risk, she will be encouraged to test for HIV,” said Suratmika. To facilitate the public in accessing the VCT services, according to Suratmika, every community health center in Tabanan would have the VCT. “Every community health center has been equipped with one counselor for providing VCT services,” said Suratmika. The spread of HIV in Tabanan was mostly caused by heterosexual contact risk factor (544 cases), perinatal risk factor (31 cases), injection drug users (21 cases), homosexuals (7 cases) and unknown (4 cases). Large amount of HIV cases due to transactional heterosexual relationships was not denied by Suratmika. Current advances in technology made sexual transactions easier and more difficult to be controlled. “People can make transaction through BBM and SMS,” he said. (kmb24)

NEGARA - Two junior high school girls from Genteng, Banyuwangi, almost became the victims as to be employed as café waitress at Delod Berawah, Mendoyo. The ranks of Jembrana Police Criminal Investigator had secured the two minors after making coordination with the Banyuwangi Police. On Tuesday afternoon, police also secured Fitri, 18, from Banyuwangi alleged to have abducted the two minors to be further employed at café. A, 15, and H, 15, admitted on Sunday (Aug 17) that they were invited by Fitri to one of social gathering events at Karangrejo village, Banyuwangi. However, they were even taken to Bali. They arrived at Delod Berawah village on Sunday afternoon and left in a dorm room.
After that, they met with M having the profession as a DJ at Café Ag. By M, they were informed that they would be employed. Being afraid, the two teenagers asked for help from M and finally on Tuesday dawn police picked up the two victims. On the other hand, in Banyuwangi there was a report on missing children having exactly the same characteristics as the two victims. Chief of Jembrana Police Criminal Investigation, Gusti Made Sudarma Putra, with permission from the Chief of Jembrana Police said on Wednesday (Aug 19) that the victims and the perpetrator had been secured in Jembrana Police. Elementary schools in Gianyar not received compulsory textbooks

GIANYAR - Late printing of the compulsory textbooks of curriculum 2013 is not only experienced by schools in Jakarta, but also in Gianyar. The entire elementary schools in Gianyar have not received any compulsory textbooks ordered by the Gianyar Education Agency. Meanwhile, junior and senior high/vocational school has just received 70 percent of the total of textbooks. The Head of Gianyar Education Agency, Dewa Alit Muliartha, explained last Tuesday that such condition did not happen due to the problem in the region. Instead the printing company designated by the Ministry of Education and Culture indeed had not sent the textbook, especially for elementary schools throughout Gianyar. Even, the delay occurred throughout the regions in Bali. “It does not only occur in Gianyar, but also the entire schools in Bali. The problem is the same, equally has not received the delivery from printing company,” he said. Alit Muliartha said the Gianyar Education Agency had already submitted the amount of books required
for elementary, junior and high school/vocational school since the beginning of June. Due to new curriculum had started in this new academic year, schools finally decided to print the textbook from the soft copy (CD) having been given previously. It was carried out by using the budget taken from the School Operational Assistance (BOS). “Other regions also experience similar case, namely receiving CD from central government,” he explained. Meanwhile, 70 percent of the textbooks for junior high, high school and vocational school required had arrived in Gianyar and distributed to respective school. Meanwhile, 30 percent of the textbooks having not been received
belonged to teacher handbook. “The textbooks for junior high, senior high and vocational school have been received of about 70 percent. However, I do not remember the exact amount because it has been handled by separate division,” he explained. When asked about the initial implementation of the new curriculum in Gianyar, he said that so far there had been no complaints from teachers. Prior to the implementation of the curriculum, all the teachers had got training, including the training prepared by the Gianyar Education Agency. “Although there has been no complaint, we will continue to monitor if there are obstacles found in the field,” he said. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Marshall, whom Smith married in 1994 when he was 89 and she was 26. The oil tycoon died the next year. His will left his $1.6 billion estate to his son and nothing to Smith. Smith, under her real name of Vickie Lynn Marshall, challenged the will, claiming that her husband promised to leave her more than $300 million above the cash and gifts showered on her during their 14-month marriage. A Houston jury said Marshall was mentally fit and under no undue pressure when he wrote the will. Over the course of nearly 20 years, the Texas bankruptcy court and local and federal courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court, all rejected Smith’s various attempts to overturn Marshall’s will and trust and to obtain money from his estate. The efforts continued even after Smith died of an accidental drug overdose in February 2007. On Monday, U.S. District Court Judge David O. Carter denied a request from Smith’s estate to sanction the estate of Marshall’s son, E. Pierce Marshall. “Time spent litigating the relationship between Vickie Lynn and J. Howard has extended for nearly five times the length of their relationship and nearly twenty times the length of their marriage. It is neither reasonable nor practical to go forward,” the judge said in his ruling. He noted that it was the last surviving piece of decades of litigation. “The American taxpayer has supported the burden of this litigation for many years, and it is time for this suit to no longer ‘drag its weary length before the Court,’” Carter concluded, quoting a Supreme Court decision in the case that itself quoted Charles Dickens’ “Bleak House.” An email message for Howard K. Stern, the executor of Smith’s estate, was not immediately returned Tuesday. G. Eric Brunstad Jr., attorney for the Marshall family, said in a statement that the family agreed with the judge that it was time to stop the litigation.

DENPASAR - Representative office of Bank Indonesia (BI) for Region III Bali-Nusra continues to promote transactions by using e-money or electronic money to suppress the circulation of fake money. In the past two months, namely April to May 2014, the number of fake banknotes reached 579 sheets. This amount is experiencing a surge from 265 sheets in April to 314 sheets in May. “They are just the detected amount. It excludes the amount that has not been detected by banks and police. We have confidence if the real amount is more than this. On that account, BI is seriously
working on the electronic money,” said Chief of Representative Office of Bank Indonesia for Region III Bali-Nusra, Benny Siswanto, in Denpasar, recently. He said that his party encour-
aged the public to use electronic money as an alternative to the use of banknotes and coins especially for a small fraction. “With the e-money, people are no need to carry cash. Simply take out the card to perform the transaction,” he said. Benny hoped that banks continued to actively intensify the dissemination of e-money in Bali. He claimed the e-money on the Island of the Gods had just been used for ticket payment when passing the Bali toll road. “At this time, the electronic money is issued by some banks, such as BRI, Mandiri and
BCA,” he concluded. The use of electronic money, according to Benny Siswanto, had many advantages. Among them, people could make transactions just by using the card, so that they were not bothered anymore to carry money physically. This lifestyle was better known as the less cash society (LCS). “LCS is all financial transactions or payments using electronic money to replace cash transactions. This method is also intended to avoid the risk of counterfeit money,” he said.

In the effort to maintain the quality of banknotes in circulation to public and maintain the money supply in a decent condition, Bank Indonesia for Region III sustainably destroyed the damaged or worn banknotes.
