DEHRADUN - Thousands of Indian soldiers battled on Thursday to reach villages and towns cut off by flash floods and landslides in the country’s north as officials warned at least 1,000 people may have been killed. Helicopters and close to 10,000 soldiers have been deployed to reach tourists and pilgrims stranded after floods caused by torrential monsoon rains hit the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand at the weekend. The soldiers were mobilizing to “provide leadership, succour, medical, air and engineer efforts”, the army said in a statement. Houses, buildings and vehicles have collapsed or been swept away by flooding rivers and landslides, while bridges and narrow roads have also been destroyed, leaving some 65,000 people stranded mainly at remote pilgrimage sites, officials said. Torrential rains four and a half times as heavy as usual have hit Uttarakhand, known as the “Land of the Gods”, where Hindu shrines and temples built high in the mountains attract many pilgrims. One of those stranded was Indian cricket star Harbhajan Singh, who was attempting to reach

a Sikh pilgrimage site but had to take refuge in a police station. “Some people are saying that we’re stuck but I wouldn’t say that we’re stuck, I’d say we’ve been saved by God,” the spin bowler said. “With the kind of rainstorm we witnessed, anything could have happened. Many people lost their lives.” At least 138 people have been killed across Uttarakhand and two neighbouring states also hit by floods and landslides, officials said, but shrine authorities warned the toll was more than 1,000. “We estimate more than 1,000 people have died as unattended bodies are scattered all around,” said Ganesh Godiyal, chairman of a trust in charge of several shrines in the pilgrimage towns of Kedarnath and Badrinath. Over the border in Nepal, floods and landslides also triggered by the monsoon have left at least 39 people dead mostly in remote parts of the country, officials said.

In India, the military operation was concentrating on reaching the worst-hit Kedarnath temple area, as families of those missing and stranded faced an anxious wait in Uttarakhand capital’s Dehradun. “Never seen anything like this... entire roads have vanished and villages destroyed... there’s rubble everywhere,” a military officer said, on condition of anonymity as he was not allowed to speak to the media. One state lawmaker put the death toll at 2,000, although disaster management officials could not confirm the figure. “The entire area is destroyed. Nothing is left,” lawmaker Shaila Rani Rawat from Kedarnath told AFP. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said late on Wednesday the priority was rescui n g those still stranded

and helping the more than 10,000 people already evacuated, describing the floods as “most distressing”. Nearly 10,000 soldiers along with 13 teams from the National Disaster Response Force have been deployed for the rescue and relief effort, a statement from the prime minister said. Local officials said 40 relief camps have been set up to house evacuated residents and tourists. Some 18 air force helicopters are ferrying many of those rescued to the camps. Soldiers from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police have been building rope and log bridges across raging rivers to try to reach those stranded. In New Delhi, the rain-swollen Yamuna river was swirling close to a level last recorded in 1978 when flash floods inundated parts of the Indian capital. The monsoon, which covers the subcontinent from June to September, usually brings some flooding. But the heavy rains arrived early this year, catching many by surprise and exposing the country’s lack of preparedness.

There are four hazardous substances often found in food products either in wet noodle, meatball, tofu, salted fish and snacks. Dozens of journalists coalesced into the members of the Bali Journalist Solidarity (SJB) held a demonstration in front of the Bali Police on Wednesday morning (Jun 19). The demonstration was carried out as a form of protest against the violence made to journalists. They gave speech in front of the headquarters of Bali Police and shouted to ‘Stop violence against journalists.’ In addition, the journalists also collected their working device in the form of press card, camera and the others on the asphalt and were then sprinkled with flowers. It was executed as an expression of deep sorrow because a number of journalists such as Nugroho Anton (Trans7) and Robby Kaleri (Mata Publik) were shot by police. Wawan Nike as field coordinator asked the police authority to investigate the shooting because the shooting of journalists proved that repressive nature of police had not ended yet. “We are not your shooting target. Therefore, we urge to investigate these cases thoroughly,” said Wawan in front of the Bali Police Headquarters. Aside from Wawan, the other journalists also made a speech in turn. Denpasar Social Welfare and Labor Agency conducted a raid against beggars in the capital of Bali Province. Such regular operation was meant to reduce the number of beggar ahead of the international event like the APEC Summit. “We will continue to conduct the raid against the beggars in order that Denpasar can be safe and comfortable because Bali will host the APEC Summit,” said the Head of Denpasar Social Welfare and Labor Agency, Made Erwin Suryadarma Sena, in Denpasar, Wednesday (Jun 19). According to him, the beggars captured in the raid would be fostered in a halfway house. They were mostly from Pedahan and Muntigunung village, Kubu subdistrict, Karangasem County and found roaming around at Badung Market, Penatih, Tonja and Sesetan, Denpasar. “The arrested beggars this time are entirely new faces and going to beg at Denpasar Art Center. They are taken by their friends that have been familiarly begging in Denpasar. One of them is 40 years old with a 6-month old baby. Such condition is meant to lure people so that they feel pity for her when holding the baby,” he explained. He said his party would raid against the beggars in the morning and afternoon because the schedule of raid by the subdistrict officers had been known in morning. Thus, the schedule of raid was then changed to the afternoon until the night. “We have to shift the schedule of beggar raid from early morning to the afternoon and evening in order to fool the beggars that are operating in Denpasar,” he said. Erwin called on the people to get involved in the fighting against the beggars coming into the city of Denpasar for the realization of Denpasar as cultured city. Their presence would damage the image. Moreover, Denpasar had proclaimed itself as a cultured city. “By all means, the security and comfort for tourists should be well maintained, so that it will not be highlighted by foreign and domestic tourists. To that end, we ask all the walks of life to participate in the fight against the beggars, so that the begging habit conducted by our residents can be eliminated,” he said. As of June 19, 2013, his party had raided 110 beggars roaming around in Denpasar. Legal instrument of raiding the beggars in Denpasar was the Denpasar Regional Bylaw No. 15/1993 and it had been amended with the Bylaw No.3/2000 on Sanitation and Public Order. “Indeed the handling of beggars has not been maximal. JAKARTA - The Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders Summit in Bali next October 1-8 is expected to come up with agreements on food security, energy security, and empowerment of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and women, National Development Planning Minister Armida Alisjahbana said on Thursday. “The agreements will be in line with this year’s theme of APEC meetings Resilience Asia Pacific Engine of Global Growth ,” the minister said. Apart from the three agreements, the upcoming APEC meeting is also expected to discuss about further travel facilitation for people living in APEC economies. “There will be an agreement to ease off the flow of people in this region. The implementation maybe in the form of issuance of smart visa or other schemes,” Indonesian Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Mari Elka Pangestu said. Earlier APEC has already eased off travel between businessmen in the region by publishing business travel card. This year, Indonesia will be hosting the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit. This is the second time that Indonesia will be hosting the APEC Summit, after 1994. Among priorities for this year’s meeting are attaining the Bogor goals, achieving sustainable growth with equity, and promoting connectivity in the region. Indonesia will focus on infrastructure investment, SMEs, participation of women in the workforce, the role of farmers, emergency response, green technology, food security, financial inclusion, health and education. In 1994, Indonesia hosted the APEC Summit in Bogor, West Java, where APEC leaders adopted the Bogor goals, focusing on free and open trade and investment in the Asia Pacific region by 2010 for industrialized economies, and by 2020 for developing economies. To meet the Bogor goals, APEC focused on three areas: Trade and Investment Liberalization, Business Facilitation, and Economic and Technical Cooperation. To achieve sustainable growth with equity, the focus will be on the global competitiveness of SMEs, financial inclusion, food security and health. To increase connectivity, APEC will focus on physical connectivity, including the development of infrastructure and investments, maritime connectivity (blue economy), institutional connectivity and people-topeople connectivity. Established in 1989, APEC is a Pacific-rim economic cooperation forum that includes 21 member economies. They are Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, the Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, the United States, and Vietnam.

Buffeted by waves

A crossing vessel runs aground, passengers abandoned Amlapura (Bali Post)— Due to being buffeted by high waves, strong ocean currents and brunt of wind, the Muliati Crossing Motor Vessel (KMP) ran aground and got stuck in the reef in the east of Padangbai Harbor on Wednesday morning (Jun 19) around 03:00. No casualties or injuries were reported in the incident, but passengers feared and were trauma. They were still displaced at Padangbai Harbor. The Head of Padangbai Harbor Authority, Ketut Aryadana, said at Padangbai last Wednesday the vessel carried 114 passengers, 17 motorcycles, 5 small vehicles, 14 medium truck, 3 large trucks and a large bus. The vessel ran aground at a headland located about 75 meters from the quay. After running aground in Karangasem, it could not get out. Evacuation of the passengers and cabin crews could be finished around 06:00 a.m., while evacuation of the vessel from the reef was still waiting for high tide. Until Wednesday afternoon, the passengers were still displaced at Padangbai Harbor, especially the car drivers and motorcycle riders. They were waiting for their vehicle or belongings to be evacuated from the ill-fated vessel deck. The vessel carrying passengers was about to berth to Padangbai Harbor from Lembar. “Our vehicle or belongings remain aboard so that we cannot go home in peace. Thus, we are forced to wait for here,” said a passenger. Another passenger, Imam Mahrus, claimed to have not got prior notice if the vessel sailed out of the course and stranded on the reef. Originally, he was suspicious because as soon as getting into the Padangbai Bay, the vessel he sailed with rocked hard. He claimed to fear and after being evacuated safely he was still excited and got trauma because it was the first time for him to experience such adversity. “I have often ridden a vessel by Padangbai-Lembar crossing service, but such incident was the first time to happen,” he said. Chief of Padangbai Marine Police, I Ketut Suartika Adnyana, said that weather condition in the area when the vessel berthed was actually fine. Though the sea currents were strong enough, the water was relatively calm. When the vessel was about to berth at Quay II, strong wind suddenly blew. It blew the ship to the eastern side of the bay. The skipper had tried to steer his vessel, but it seemed fruitless. The vessel continued to get moved and the hull finally got stuck on the reef. The skipper re-tried to push the vessel back toward the bow when strong wind had passed. But the effort should be discontinued by force because the sea water receded by late morning. The vessel owner did not want to take any risk because withdrawal by force would make the hull leak. Around 06:00 a.m., the passengers could finally be evacuated by speedboat of Marine Police and fisherman boats. Meanwhile, their baggage and cargo were left for a while aboard. From the observation on Wednesday, the hull looked oblique to right side or to the south. Similar incidents had occurred for several times at the location, and the vessels eventually ran aground on the reef. Ketut Aryadana could not ascertain when the vessel and its cargo could be evacuated. His party was still waiting for high tides. (013)

Sidewalk clogged after rain, Bangli town submerged Bangli (Bali Post)— It is no longer a new scene when the rain hits the Bangli town. The sewage overflowed onto the road along Jalan Nusantara and the surrounding areas. Such great flooding flowed toward the south to Jalan Nuri and Jalan Kusumayuda Bangli. It happened on Tuesday afternoon (Jun 18). A local legislator of Bangli, Nengah Artana, said on Wednesday (Jun 19) the flood water occurred along the main road in the town of Bangli when it rained heavily. It was caused by the poor drainage system. What happened beneath the pavement was unknown. His party would explore whether the drainage was no longer able to accommodate the large volume of water when it rained or it was caused

by the other things such as silting and clogged drain due to garbage. Besides, the maintenance of drainage network system should be carried out periodically by the government. Additionally, the governments should not construct the drainage carelessly. Without mature consideration, it would result in siltation, so that the dredging should be carried out at all times. As a result, the water coming from each house

compound would not stagnate but flowed through the drainage. Since the drainage was clogged, the rainwater eventually overflowed onto the road. Artana assessed that it was highly ironic that Bangli located on highland was even engulfed by such regular flooding. “Flooding in the town of Bangli did not just happen for this time. Showing Chinese Influence in BaliBangli has a unique temple showing a strong Chinese influence known as Dalem Balingkang Temple. Structure of the temple is unique because it was formerly said to serve as a palace to avoid the attack from other kings. Formerly, the Dalem Balingkang Temple belonged to the temple complex of Tanggun Titi—standing for the end of bridge and had a spring. In this temple complex lie some shrines dedicated to Ratu Ngurah Sakti Tanggun Titi, Ratu Mas Melanting, Ratu Sakti Gede Penyarikan and Sang Hyang Haji Saraswati. The second complex after passing a square occurs a cangapit building, namely an entrance equipped with a monarchic sitting when the king watched the Jro Gede mepada surrounding the temple. The middle courtyard only has a few buildings, only consisting of a meeting hall, the abode of all deities and a shrine of Ratu Ayu Subandar. The shrine is used to worship Kang Ci Wi and

is highly believed by Chinese descendant community to bring in blessings. In the main complex or innermost courtyard lies the worship place of Petak Grand Palace comprising the eleven and nine-tiered meru shrines. Similarly, there is also ancestral worship of Dalem Balingkang in the form of brick chamber and seven-tiered meru shrine to remind of the Seven Deities. Besides, there are long pavilion with 24 columns and 20 columns as well as mundar-mundar pavilion with 16 columns. History of the temple is much revealed in the Sukawana Inscription (Goris, 1954). It said that Sukawana village was hit by storms and the palace of Jaya Pangus was badly damaged, so that Jong Les moved to Balingkang. Balingkang itself is derived from two words Bali + ingkang. Orally and based on written evidence, it is associated with the wedding of King Jaya Pangus Harkajalancana who ruled during the period of Caka Year 1103-1191 or 1181-1269 AD. King

Jaya Pangus had two queens, Paduka Bhatari Sri Parameswari Indujaketana and Paduka Sri Mahadewi Cacangkaja Cihna. In the existing folklore, his Chinese wife was named Kang Ci Wi, namely a daughter of trader from China. Then, the words Bali-Ing-Kang were combined into Balingkang. In the chronicle of Ulun Danu Batur Temple (Batur Temple) of Kintamani is mentioned about Ida Ratu Gede Ngurah Subandar or Kongco Cong Po Kong, where Empu Liem became the prominent assistant to teach war strategy and governed with principles of Asta Brata. One of the war strategy relics is immortalized in the dance of Baris Dadap, Baris Tumbak, Baris Perisi or Baris Tamiang, Baris Bajra to Baris Cina. Baris or warrior dance represents knighthood. Strong Chinese influence is evidenced at a number of villages in Kintamani having geographical names derived from Mandarin words. For example, the name of Pingan village

is actually derived from the word Ping An meaning safety. Songan village comes from the Song An, Siakin village from the Sia In and Paketan village from Paket An. Early Chinese settlers also got farmland at Payangan and they gave litchi seedlings to the King of Bali. The tradition of gallivanting show (ngelawang) is also similar to the tradition of Chinese Lion Dance coming from one house to another. Many kinds of ornamental styles used to embellish the house and furniture in Bali are also adopted from Chinese arts. Such diverse influences have been widely recognized as native culture to Bali. Even, Balinese traders believe that Kongco Cong Po Kong or Ida Ratu Gede Ngurah Subandar in Kintamani is a protector that gives blessing to their trade. Likewise, the couple of deities called Rambut Sedana symbolized with the effigies made of perforated coins are believed to give a blessing to family. (BTN/puj)

Self-managed waste management lacks of truck Bali Post DENPASAR - Up to these days, the self-managed waste management in Denpasar still lacks of trucks as happening to the Melasti Depot at Kesiman, Kertalangu, Denpasar. The depot has only two trucks to serve the eleven hamlets at the village. A member of Commission D of the Denpasar House, Wayan Warka, said the Melasti Depot had been in operation over the last three years, but in recent years it experienced an obstacle in transporting waste such as engine trouble as they were not used properly. “We here only have two trucks operated to transport garbage. On average, the garbage trucks were manufactured in 1980s,” said Wayan Warka. He said both trucks should work hard due to small amount of truck available compared to the amount of garbage to be addressed at the village. “At least, there should be three trucks in good condition, while the current condition of the truck is old enough, let alone the depot was damaged as buffeted by wind,” he said. Similar conditions were also seen in the Artha Ayu self-managed garbage depot. According to Made Raka, the man managing the waste at the depot, his party was also finding difficulty in managing the waste as well as limitations in terms of the amount of truck and landfill. “We have a truck to serve the people’s settlement and the land in use is only 200 square meters. To avoid being overfull, we must work extra hard by sorting and disposing it so that it will not be immediately excessively full,” he recalled. Meanwhile, Spokesperson of the Denpasar Municipality, IB Rahoela, when asked for his confirmation stated that government had been providing the assistance to self-managed waste depot, though not all of the depots obtained the assistance. BERLIN - U.S. President Barack Obama used a speech in Berlin on Wednesday to call on Russia to revive the push for a world without nuclear weapons, offering to cut deployed nuclear arsenals by a third, but Moscow immediately poured scorn on his proposal. Speaking in Berlin where U.S. Presidents John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan gave rousing Cold-War speeches, Obama urged Russia to help build on the “New START” treaty that requires Moscow and Washington to cut stockpiles of deployed nuclear weapons to 1,550 each by 2018. The speech, a day after Obama met Russian President Vladimir Putin at a summit where they disagreed publicly about Syria, was given a frosty reception by Moscow which said it could “not take such proposals seriously” while Washington was beefing up its anti-missile defenses. “After a comprehensive review, I have determined that we can ensure the security of America and our allies, and maintain a strong and credible strategic deterrent, while reducing our deployed strategic nuclear weapons by up to one third,” Obama said. “I intend to seek negotiated cuts with Russia to move beyond Cold War nuclear postures,” he said at the Brandenburg Gate, which once overlooked the Berlin Wall that divided the communist east and the capitalist west.

Russia says U.S. plans for antimissile defenses harm the goal of arms reduction by requiring Moscow to hold more missiles or lose its deterrent capability. “How can we take the idea of strategic nuclear weapons reductions seriously when the United States is building up its ability to intercept these strategic nuclear weapons?” Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin said. “These things clearly do not go together. It’s obvious that Russia’s highest political leadership cannot take such proposals seriously,” Rogozin told reporters. Sweden jails Rwandan for life for role in 1994 genocide Reuters

STOCKHOLM - A Swedish court on Thursday sentenced a man of Rwandan origin to life imprisonment for his role in the 1994 genocide in the African county, the first such case in the Nordic state. Stanislas Mbanenande, 54, an ethnic Hutu from Rwanda who is now a Swedish citizen, was convicted of taking part in several massacres in Kibuye in western Rwanda, the court said in a statement. He had denied the charges. He was also convicted of playing a leading role at a lower level and participating in murder and kidnapping. “It has been proved that the purpose of the acts of which the defendant has now been convicted was to wholly or partly destroy the Tutsi ethnic group. The acts have therefore been assessed a genocide,” the court ruling said, setting a sentence of life imprisonment. In a span of 100 days in 1994, Hutu soldiers and militiamen killed around 800,000 people, mostly Tutsis. Rwanda is now under a Tutsi-dominated government. Some of the hearings in the Swedsh trial were held in Kigali, Rwanda’s capital. Norway convicted a Rwandan for masterminding the murder of 2,000 people in the genocide and sent him to jail for 21 years in February.

LONDON - Serena Williams heads to Wimbledon to defend her title with seeds of doubt and defeatism already sown in the minds of her opponents. The psychological scars of playing the younger Williams sister run deep in the women’s game and, now that the American has dusted off the red clay from her shoes, predictions of an upset on southwest London’s luscious lawns are few and far between. Having bludgeoned her way to a 16th grand slam and second title at Roland Garros, Williams can now tighten her grip still further on the sport she has come to dominate by claiming a fourth major in five attempts. It is little wonder then that Williams’s rivals for the Wimbledon title can realistically be counted on one hand. Her opponent in the final at Roland Garros, Maria Sharapova, and Belarussian world number two Victoria Azarenka are the leading candidates to throw a spanner in

the works. Confidence, however, is hardly overflowing. Sharapova was circumspect to say the least on entering the French Open final having lost 12 consecutive matches to Williams. “I’d be lying if I said it doesn’t bother me, obviously,” the Russian said of a losing record stretching back to 2004. Defeat in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open in January is the only smudge on a near-perfect year in which Williams has returned to the pinnacle of the rankings and re-conquered Paris, where the title had eluded her since 2002. Back then she went on to complete the “Serena Slam”, winning all four majors consecutively and few would bet against her repeating the trick. The Barcelona-bound 21year-old, who has often struggled at international level despite his billing as the next great Brazilian player, set the hosts on their way with a stunning volley in the ninth minute, the second game in a row that he has got them off to a flying start. He repeatedly tormented the Mexican defence and brought the crowd to life with his often cheeky trickery before producing the high point of his display deep into stoppage time. Collecting the ball on the left, he teased the two defenders blocking his way to the penalty area, then somehow slipped between them and laid the ball off for substitute Jo, only called up as a replacement for the injured Leandro Damiao, to score for the second match running. Neymar’s performance lit up an otherwise ordinary display by Brazil, who produced an elec-

The game was played against the backdrop of protests which have rocked Brazil in the last few days. There were demonstrations outside the stadium before kick off with protestors demanding “health, education,

not corruption”. The nationwide protests were sparked last week by transportation fare increases, which came as Brazil struggles with annual inflation of 6.5 percent, unleashing a tide of complaints that caught authorities off guard. Contrasting the country’s high taxes with its ramshackle schools, hospitals and other government services, demonstrators have criticised the 28 billion reais ($12.9 billion) of public money being spent on preparations for the 2014 soccer World Cup, to be played in 12 Brazilian cities. The Confederations Cup is a warmup for next year’s tournament. Inside the stadium, fans enthusiastically sang the national anthem and some held up signs saying: “This protest is not against the national team but against corruption.”

BERNE - Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala will again have to stage their home matches in Europe away from their own stadium next season because of security concerns, soccer’s governing body UEFA said on Wednesday. “The UEFA emergency panel and decided that due to the security situation in Dagestan and the North Caucasus, no UEFA competition match is allowed to be played in this region during the 2013/14 season,” UEFA said in a statement. “Consequently, Anzhi Makhachkala have been requested to propose an alternative venue for their home matches in the 2013/14 UEFA Europa League.” “The UEFA emergency panel came to this decision after having carefully examined and evaluated the current security situation in the North Caucasus and notably in Dagestan, and taking into account the whole range of circumstances as well as the warnings issued by various governments. “This decision remains in force for subsequent seasons until further notice.” Anzhi have spent a lot of money on the likes of Cameroon striker Samuel Eto’o and Dutch coach Guus Hiddink and signed Brazilian midfielder Willian for a 35 million euros ($47 million). They finished third in the Russian Premier League last season, missing out on a place in the Champions League. Three police officers, two university security guards and two students — including a Japanese student — were injured, Shanghai police said on its official microblog. Nearly 1,000 fans had gathered at a stadium in Shanghai Tongji University, where the retired star was to meet members of the university team, according to the state-run news site Xinmin Net. Upon Beckham’s arrival, fans stormed through a gate and broke through a line formed by police and guards, Xinmin said. Photos and video footage show people pushed onto the ground, shoes scattered and a uniformed woman being carried away — her face covered in blood. “Too crazy,” said Chu Dan, a Tongji University soccer player who was hoping to have “some interaction on the pitch” with Beckham. “But we didn’t expect so many people showing up here — too many fans of Beckham.” The event was canceled, and Shanghai police said they were investigating the incident. A post on Beckham’s microblog on the popular Chinese-language platform Sina Weibo wishes the injured speedy recoveries and expresses regret for the cancellation. “It was impossible to get through the massive crowds,” it reads. Beckham is in China this week on a seven-day promotional tour for the Chinese Super League, China’s top league. He has been hired as an “image ambassador” to promote the sport.

RECIFE, Brazil — On a hot and humid tropical evening, Italy sweated out a 4-3 victory over Japan. And by their own account, the Azzurri were fortunate to come out on top. Italy rallied from a two-goal deficit Wednesday to overcome a passionate Japan squad coached by one of their countryman and reach the Confederations Cup semifinals. First-half substitute Sebastian Giovinco scored the winner in the 86th minute of a wild match at the Arena Pernambuco, pounding home a cross from Claudio Marchisio. After a dismal start for the Azzurri that saw Japan score twice in the opening 33 minutes, Daniele De Rossi pulled one back with a header in the 41st, Japan defender Atsuto Uchida scored an own-goal in the 50th and Mario Balotelli converted a penalty in the 52nd to give Italy a 3-2 lead. Japan had taken the lead with a penalty from Keisuke Honda in the 21st. Manchester United midfielder Shinji Kagawa made it 2-0 in the 33rd after a defensive error. The great view from Penelokan IBP Penelokan offers a natural panoramic view of Lake and Mount Batur and is shrouded in breathtaking scenery that draws visitors every day. The cool mountain breezes are literally a breath of fresh air in the heat of the Indonesian sun and the beauty of the landscape is the main reason to make the long trip from the capital of Bali, Denpasar. In 1917, black lava erupted from the Mount Batur volcano and destroyed the villages in the area. Penelokan sits a massive 900 meters above sea level and its name translates to ‘a place to look’, which describes it perfectly. Adventurers will enjoy climbing the peak to get a better look at the crystal clear water of Lake Batur and the mountainous backdrops. There are often fruit selling stalls on the nearby roads and there are some spectacular sunsets to be witnessed from the village. The name Penelokan means “beautiful view”, and this is certainly no misnomer. From this little hill village there are breath taking views of a fascinating landscape dominated by the volcano (quiescent since 1963) of Gunung Batur and its crater lake. Penelokan, like the nearby village of Batur, formerly lay immediately below the volcano. The villagers stoically accepted the damage caused by eruptions in 1917 and 1926, but after the major erup-

tion of 1963 (which took place at about the same time as the eruption of Gunung Agung) they resolved to rebuild their village on a safer site on the rim of the crater. Apart from the magnificent view of Gunung Batur and Lake Batur, Penelokan has no features of particular interest. Such sights as it had were destroyed in the most recent eruptions of the volcano. Among them was a temple containing a shrine dedicated to the goddess Dewi Danu, who is much revered as protective goddess of the water of Lake Batur. As if by a miracle the shrine was spared by the flows of lava and is now in the Pura Ulun Danu Batur. Penelokan Tourist Resort is situated on the southern part of Batur Tengah Village of Kintamani District, around 20 kms from the town of Bangli or some 63 kms from Denpasar, the capital of Bali Province. Many guests, domestic or foreign choose this place so they can enjoy the cold but refreshing air of the mountainous land. It is about 1,500 meters above sea level. Government to keep momentum of economic growth Antara

JAKARTA - Chief Economic Minister Hatta Rajasa said the government would keep the growth momentum to make the economy to remain sound and to protect the people. “It has all been discussed well and all parties have agreed to issue policies to realize them. Bank Indonesia has also issued policies and so has the government,” he said after a coordination meeting on economy at Bank Indonesia Building here on Thursday. He said there were four important issues discussed at the meeting. Besides keeping the growth momentum the government would also control inflation by assuring supplies of commodities, maintaining the buying power of the public and improving fiscal conditions. Hatta said the government would also issue economic policy packages to maintain investment and market confidence. “The public must be assured that the planned fuel price hike would be accompanied by stimulus packages to make our economy to remain sound and to protect the people,” he said. Regarding inflation the minister that it was still maintained while

food supplies were also still sufficient and their prices controlled. “If you wish to see prices just look at data from the Central Statistics Agency and not other institutions. That is what has been used as a reference as the data are collected from markets across Indonesia,” he said. The government would soon raise the prices of subsidized fuel oils after the draft revised 2013 budget was approved by the parliament to reduce oil subsidy which has grown bigger to increase a budget deficit as the country has to import gasoline to meet domestic demand. Based on the revised budget the government also plans to extend compensations to the poor to reduce the impact of the fuel price hike on them. The compensations include rice aid, program for families of hope, scholarships for poor students and direct cash handouts totaling Rp150,000 a month for a fourmonth period.

US, Indonesian troopers strengthen cooperation Antara

JAKARTA - This year’s Garuda Shield exercise represents the largest and most complex training exercise ever conducted in the long-standing military relationship between the United States and Indonesia, the US Embassy said. Over the last two weeks, soldiers from the US Army’s 82nd Airborne Division and the Indonesian Army’s Kostrad Division 1 have participated in the annual Garuda Shield exercise which is designed to build relationships between the two armies and create familiarity through working together, the embassy said on its official website on Thursday. The event includes a wide array of interoperability-focused events ranging from combined staff operations and computer-based simulation to small unit tactics training and live-fire exercises. The culmination activity and centerpiece of the 2013 Garuda Shield Exercise were multiple airborne operations conducted with U.S. and Indonesia paratroopers descending together onto a drop zone in the vicinity of Kostrad Division 1 Headquarters. This year almost 500 US soldiers made the journey to Indonesia to take part in this important exercise and continue to develop our military-to-military linkages. The 2014 Garuda Shield, which is planned to be conducted with Kostrad Division 2 in Malang, will continue to enhance familiarity and introduce new areas of collaboration for our two armies to explore.

But it decreased to 1,500 meters at 6 am,” Ibnu Hasan, the airport’s duty manager, said here on Thursday. He said at 7 am the visibility worsened as it dropped to 1,000 meters. At 8 the management was forced to stop all flights as the visibility reduced further to 800 meters. “Several flights from airlines such as Garuda Indonesia, Lion Air and Air Asia were diverted to other airports near Riau. Garuda and Lion diverted their planes to Medan Airport and Air Asia to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia,” he said. According to him, the airport closure was the first time being occurred in SSK II. “The airport was opened again at 9 am after the air condition became normal,” he said.

BUSINESS British banks facing huge capital shortfall Agence France-Presse LONDON - Britain’s five biggest banks needed an extra £27.1 billion ($41.9 billion, 31.6 billion euros) at the end of 2012 to meet rules on capital backup, and must sell more assets and slash costs further, regulators said on Thursday. The Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA), the Bank of England’s banking supervision division, said in a statement that this figure compared with the previous estimated shortfall of £25 billion given in March.

Lenders already had plans in place to raise £13.7 billion of capital -- but needed to find another £13.4 billion, according to the regulator. Barclays needed to raise £1.7 billion, while state-rescued pair Lloyds Banking Group (LBG) and Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) needed to find another £7.0 billion and £3.2 billion respectively, the PRA said. “All of the firms have been informed of their requirements and have produced for the PRA plans to meet them,” it said. “It is for the firms themselves to announce

the actions they plan to take. In aggregate, the additional actions, which include disposals and restructurings, will generate the equivalent of an additional £13.4 billion of capital.” It added that the British units of Santander, HSBC, Standard Chartered and Nationwide Building Society could find the additional cash via their existing capital-raising plans. The PRA is tasked with ensuring that all major British banks hold capital resources equivalent to at least seven percent of their risk-weighted assets.

“The PRA’s assessment is that, at the end of 2012, five of the eight banks (Barclays, Co-operative Bank, LBG, Nationwide and RBS) fell short of this standard,” it said in the statement. “They had an aggregate capital shortfall relative to this standard of £27.1 billion.” The announcement came one day after British finance minister George Osborne ordered a review into whether bailed-out RBS should be split into ‘good’ and ‘bad’ banks, as part of the government’s plan to return it to the private sector.

Nearby Malaysia closed 200 schools and banned open burning in some areas. The Pollutant Standards Index, Singapore’s main measure for air pollution, surged to a record reading of 371, breaching the “hazardous” classification that can aggravate respiratory ailments. The previous all-time high before this week was in 1997,

when the index reached 226.The hazardous reading lasted three hours before easing to 253 in the evening, still “very unhealthy.” Smog fueled by raging Indonesian blazes has hit Singapore and Malaysia many times, often in the middle of the year, but the severity of this week’s conditions has strained diplomatic ties. Iraqis vote in 2 Sunni-dominated provinces Associated Press Writer FALLUJAH, Iraq — Iraqis in two Sunni-dominated provinces voted Thursday in provincial elections marked by tight security measures that left streets in former insurgent strongholds largely deserted. Iraq is confronting its worst outbreak of violence in years and relations between Iraq’s Sunni and Shiite Muslims remain fraught. The two provinces where the voting was taking place — Anbar and Ninevah — have seen some of the largest rallies in a months-long wave of Sunni protests against the Shiite-led government. A vehicle ban was implemented in major cities in the two provinces as voting got underway for candidates who will serve on provincial-level councils. Thousands of policemen and soldiers were deployed to secure the vote. In Fallujah, 65 kilometers (40 miles) west of the Iraqi capital, security forces sealed off the city with checkpoints that prevented cars from getting in. Streets were empty except for ambulances, police and army vehicles, and a

small number of cars permitted by electoral authorities. A few voters trickled into the polling centers in the morning hours and were searched twice before being allowed in. Police offered some voters rides to the polls in pickup tricks, as did political parties using minibuses emblazoned with pictures of candidates. That appears to be true, at least, for British luxury brand Burberry, which showcased its latest menswear designs in London on Tuesday after a decade in Milan. The move brings the brand’s menswear division in line with its womenswear branch, which has led the London Fashion Week circuit with glitzy, celebrity-studded shows for the past few seasons. It also signaled a new focus on menswear, which the brand has reported to be its fastest growing product division in the past year. “It’s an ever-growing category — the business is doing extremely well,” the brand’s design chief, Christopher Bailey, told The Associated Press after the show. “Men are enjoying fashion more than ever. Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

James Gandolfini: He let his characters star Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK — James Gandolfini would have hated all this fuss. He was an actor who shrank from attention for anything but the roles he brought to life. No false modesty. He simply did his best to remain a private citizen behind his public characters. These included, of course, Tony Soprano, the fiendish, tormented mobster the world came to know and revere as a towering dramatic achievement. Now this flood of tributes to Gandolfini upon his untimely death? This would likely have struck him as excessive and needless, upstaging for a moment his lifetime of work. In a too-brief career that ended Wednesday at age 51 while he was vacationing in Rome, Gandolfini can be celebrated for performances on TV, on stage and in films that reached beyond the obvious triumph of “The Sopranos” and the unsought celebrity it brought him. Before, during and after “The Sopranos,” he remained defiantly a character actor, by all indications spared a leading man’s ego as he tackled roles that piqued his interest, not roles meant to guarantee the spotlight. “I’m much more comfortable doing smaller things,” he declared not long ago. And in the past year, his film appearances included supporting (or smaller) roles in Kathryn Bigelow’s Osama bin Laden manhunt docudrama “Zero Dark Thirty,” ‘’So-

pranos” creator David Chase’s ‘60s period drama “Not Fade Away,” and Andrew Dominick’s crime flick “Killing Them Softly.” It was all part of one of the most unlikely acting careers in television. How to account for the providential choice of Gandolfini to headline a high-profile HBO drama series playing an anguished mob boss and family man? Balding and beefy, he seemed the antithesis of an actor who could sustain viewers’ interest, amusing them, horrifying them and compelling them to love him in a way they had never loved a TV hero before. Gandolfini made the character monstrous yet sympathetic, a man with a murderously chilling gaze yet a mischievous smile. Thus did Tony Soprano become part of the culture, taking Gandolfini, reluctantly, with him. By the end of the series’ run, Gandolfini was suitably grateful for the role he had embodied for six seasons. But

he had lent such authenticity to Tony that the character by then weighed heavily upon him. Gandolfini said he struggled to like Tony. “Let’s just say, it was a lot easier to like him in the beginning, than in the last few years,” he told The Associated Press a few days before the series’ finale in June 2007. In that rare interview, Gandolfini, famously press-shy ever since “The Sopranos” blindsided him with stardom, was as gracious as he was uncomfortable discussing himself. There was one too many questions delving into his acting process. “Oh, please! Who gives a crap!” he scoffed (though he didn’t say “crap”). Then he quickly apologized. “I’m sorry,” he said. “I didn’t mean to be abrupt.” Despite his formidable presence in person as on film, there was no confusing him with Tony Soprano. He was his own man, down-to-earth, accommodating — and no-nonsense when it counted. Once glimpsed by a reporter filming a scene on the set of the Soprano family’s plush New Jersey home, he bobbled a line of dialogue, whereupon he let out a growl, not at anyone else but directed unsparingly at himself before the cameras rolled again.

Sam Taylor-Johnson to direct ‘50 Shades’ movie Associated Press Writer LONDON — Producers say British visual artist and filmmaker Sam TaylorJohnson has been signed to direct the movie version of erotic best-seller “50 Shades of Grey.” Taylor-Johnson, whose only previous feature was the John Lennon biopic “Nowhere Boy,” promised she would “honor the power” of the book, which has sold millions of copies and spawned countless imitators.
