1 year after Prince’s death, another turn for The Revolution MINNEAPOLIS — For members of Prince’s 1980s backing band The Revolution, reuniting and hitting the road for a spring U.S. tour is how they are coping with the “Purple Rain” pop superstar’s unexpected death a year ago. “We’re taking it to the people who are grieving like we are, and letting them have a little bit of relief,” guitarist Wendy Melvoin, sitting on a couch with other members of the band during a break at their Minneapolis rehearsal space, said Wednesday. When Prince died of an accidental painkiller overdose, members of The Revolution were mourning at a Minneapolis hotel and made an impromptu video, promising to reunite for shows honoring their one-time flamboyant front man. After three sold-out shows at the fabled First Avenue nightclub (the setting of Prince’s hit 1984 movie “Purple Rain”) in September, The Revolution is back, preparing to kick off a tour Friday at Paisley Park in the Minneapolis suburb of Chanhassen on the anniversary of Prince’s death. The tour includes stops in Chicago, Washington, D.C., New York, Cleveland, Detroit, Los Angeles

and San Francisco before ending in Seattle on July 15. Melvoin is joined by bassist BrownMark, keyboardists Matt Fink and Lisa Coleman, and drummer Bobby Z. The reunited Revolution plans to play Prince’s synthesizerheavy 1980s music through his lauded 1987 double album “Sign o’ the Times.” “We have the ability now to give people a glimpse of what we experienced with him,” BrownMark said. “And I think that’s a powerful thing. I know it helped me heal.” While Prince had a reputation as a perfectionist, members of The Revolution remember the good times goofing in the studio. “We had fun. We had a lot of fun. Sometimes we would be rehearsing and we’d crack up, we’d just laugh for an hour, cracking jokes,” BrownMark recalls. “We’d go play softball,” keyboardist Fink said. “’OK, we’re not going to rehearse today, let’s go play softball.’” After years of recording and touring with The Revolution, Prince “did what any boss would do and just put it (the band) to bed,” Bobby Z. said. VP Pence praises Indonesia’s democratic, tolerant values

JAKARTA — U.S. Vice President Mike Pence praised Indonesia’s democracy and moderate form of Islam on Thursday alongside the president of the world’s most populous Muslim nation, reinforcing his message with a visit to the region’s largest mosque. Pence’s comments, though routine, had significance for Indonesian President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, who a day earlier suffered a serious political setback when a political ally was defeated by Islamic conservatives in the election for Jakarta governor. The divisive campaign undermined the image of Indonesia abroad as a generally tolerant Muslim nation. Indonesia is the latest stop on an Asian tour by Pence that aims to reaffirm traditional U.S. alliances at a time when Donald Trump’s presidency has raised questions about the strength of the U.S.

commitment to the region. Pence said at a joint news conference with Jokowi that the U.S. wants to strengthen its strategic partnership with Indonesia. In brief comments, Jokowi said they agreed to boost cooperation. Bali’s main problem

Everyone produces 2 to 2.5 kg of waste daily

DENPASAR - Waste problem is just like fire in husks for Bali. Any time it can ‘singe’ the Island of the Gods that depends on tourism sector. Solution of waste is often said to be simple, though in fact is complicated. The key to the problem here is to raise public awareness to do 3R (reduce, reuse, recycle). “Waste is a world problem, not only that of Bali. We have to manage the waste, not to be put into discourse because everybody produces 2 to 2.5 kg of waste per day, and every kg of waste produces 0.37 gram of carbon dioxide,” said the Head of the Bali Environment Agency, Gede Suarjana, in Denpasar, on Tuesday (Apr. 18). According to Suarjana, the 3R is actually the most effective waste solution. Reducing means to reduce the amount of waste dumped to landfill. Reusing is using again the waste by processing it into fertilizer and recycling means to recycle the waste. If the waste has been managed with the 3R, it means only about 13 percent of the waste will be going to landfill. “Suwung landfill in particular will be able to be used much longer. However, the problem now, is our behavior like that? I am sure not, and we have not done waste segregation at respective home. The current system is to dispose, transport, dispose,” he explained. Suarjana added the waste dumped by people and then transported by truck to be disposed to landfill will not be able to resolve the problem of waste piles. Conversely, the piles of waste is actually mounting and shortening the

age of landfill. Like the Suwung landfill, its age remains two years. “If the system is indeed dispose, transport and dispose, it should be managed with technology that can process waste into electricity. Now, with the high tariff of electricity at 30 cents, is it capable of doing it?” he added. That is why, continued Suarjana,

mounting waste at Suwung landfill exudes unpleasant odor. “People are harmed. Besides, there is also a Pertamina tank nearby. This is very hazardous because the distance is less than 500 meters,” he said. Tamba added that the government should become a good example in waste management. After that, then people can follow by changing their behavior by not littering, sorting and composting the waste. “The government should become the leading sector first. If the government has good intention and

concept, people will surely follow. Have a look at Surabaya! It is now amazing for having a promenade. It is just like overseas because it’s clean,” explained this Democratic Party politician. The former Special Committee Chairman of the Regional Bylaw Draft on PPLH in the Bali House of Representatives, I Nyoman Adnyana, stated that waste has become something scary because of adverse impacts on the environment, tourism, soil and water quality as well as scenery around it. “Moreover, the Suwung landfill is close to Denpasar city, close to travelers, harbor and the center of the crowd,” he said. According to Adnyana, relocation of landfill from Suwung to other location will not resolve the problem. On that account, the existing waste needs to be managed in order to produce and become attractive. Currently, there are indeed many investors getting interested in managing waste at Suwung landfill. However, they are constrained by tipping fee, so that none of them follow it up. “We have provided solutions for urban waste especially in Sarbagita (Denpasar, Badung, Gianyar and Tabanan) that cannot apply manual or conventional model. It must use technology. Certainly, we hope the investors having the technology to get involved. If the province does not have money to subsidize tipping fee, it can use compensation model,” added this PDI-P politician from Bangli. (kmb32)

PENGLIPURAN tourism village is an object having the cleanest environment being free from garbage in Bangli district. In order to maintain the sanitation, the village has issued a bylaw or awig-awig on the ban from disposing of any waste and this has been enforced since long time ago. If any residents of Penglipuran dispose of waste haphazardly, they will be subject to customary sanction in the form of putting prayascita offerings at the local village temple.

Chief of Penglipuran customary village, I Wayan Supat, stated on Wednesday (Apr. 19) that such bylaw has been applied through generations from his ancestors. The measure is taken for the sake of healthy and clean environment as well as prosperous society. “If there are residents disposing of waste, village will impose sanctions in accordance to the awing-awing in the form of putting prayascita offerings at the local village, not in the form of money,” he said.

Supat said that to realize the sanitation of the surrounding environment, he applies mutual help system carried out by the entire Penglipuran customary village by involving customary youth club, housewives coalesced in PKK, pecalang (customary security guard), baris troupe et cetera. “Sanitation does not only become the responsibility of the leaders, but also all the residents,” he said. Supat said that if there are resi-

dents littering, the village authority will impose sanctions to them. The bylaw has existed since long time ago used to maintain environmental sanitation. In addition, every home yard of residents should also be made a landscaping, so that the house looks more beautiful, green, and clean. “Our existing bylaw can be implemented consistently. Similarly, residents are not allowed to dispose of garbage carelessly and dry clothes in open space as it will

be able to give impression of being less clean,” he explained. Furthermore, he said the well-maintained sanitation at Penglipuran village is also meant to maintain the predicate of being the cleanest tourist attraction received in 2016. “We must be able to maintain the predicate. Do not let be unclean that will lead to revocation of the predicate. To that end, we urge the residents to keep the environment clean at all times,” said Wayan Supat. (nan)

A disabled child aspiring to be famous painter

VIVACITY of a child of Ideran hamlet, Kayuputih, Banjar, Buleleng, Gusti Ketut Arya Subakti, 9, never goes out. Amidst his status as a child with disability, this first grade student of the SDN 3 Kayuputih elementary school still pursues his talent for painting. Moreover, at his young age he has aspired to become a famous painter.

Unsurprisingly, Damas selected a dress from her line for the evening, opting for a printed midi dress with button details. A layered blazer added a little extra structure and coverage, making it ideal for the office, and while Damas’s pumps make her ensemble feel party-ready, swapping in flats for daytime is an easy way to transform a look. When met at his school on Tuesday morning (Apr. 18), this youngest of four siblings looked cheerful. Though his right hand and both legs do not grow normally, his vivacity to attend classroom lesson is unnecessary to be doubted again. All materials presented by his teachers can be understood well. His cheerfulness is not only in the classroom. Similar condition can also been seen at his break time. He keeps joking with his classmates. People will see no shyness from his tiny face. When going to school cafeteria to shop, his friends do not hesitate to lend a hand by pushing his wheelchair. Due to such condition, Subakti must always be accompanied by his mother, Jero Sulastri, when attending school. It is carried out so that there will be someone taking care of him when going home. Certainly it is impossible for him to walk because the distance of

his house is far enough. “I go to school every day to accompany him. In the afternoon, his father will pick him up from school,” said Sulastri. Meanwhile, his class teacher, Ida Ayu Komang Sri Widani, said that this child has good academic ability. Based on the results of the last semester exam, he was ranked fourth out of 25 students. “His mental is very good so that he can compete against his classmates,” she explained. When visiting his home, after school, Subakti immediately took crayons and drawing books to his room for the preparation of painting. He independently moved by only relying on the rest of his left hand. While scratching his painting brush, he slowly told stories. Painting has been his hobby since two years ago. “I really like to paint. It starts from the age of seven years,” he said. His work is not just limited to landscape paintings. There are

also paintings of ogoh-ogoh (papier mâché demon) and a number of cartoon characters. Artistic impression can be seen from his works. His ability is not obtained through learning from the others, but grows through self-taught. “I learn this autodidactically. After watching ogoh-ogoh, I come home and immediately draw it,” he said. Apparently his hobby will not only want to be acted for some time, but continuously. Moreover, his great desire to be a famous painter has been embedded in his mind. “I aspire to be a famous painter and many people will buy,” he said while smiling. Meanwhile, his father, Gusti Kadek Sujana, said that his painting ability is considered as a gift for his son who has imperfect physical condition. This talent will continuously be sharpened and supported in order to develop so that he will have a life skill. “I never forbid him to paint. Instead, I encourage him to be better,” he said. Such condition of his life, continued this man working as a caseworker, has been getting attention from the local government through a number of assistance.

DENPASAR - Ni Wayan Aliani, 43, and a two-year-old toddler, Ni Kadek Dewi Hana Maharani, posing her niece, became a casualty when a truck went into the kitchen. Allegedly the truck had a brake failure at Labuan Sait, Pecatu, South Kuta, Badung, on Wednesday (Apr. 19) around 11:30. Both victims died at the scene after being clamped under the truck. Both victims were successfully removed and then evacuated to forensic installation of Sanglah Hospital, Denpasar, not long after the incident. The atmosphere of sadness enveloped the victims’ families while waiting for the corpse in the process of examination. One of the victims’ families, Nyoman Jastra, said that the incident started when the aunt who had just arrived from her house to take milk. However the unluckiness cannot be avoided, they were suddenly hit by the truck when she just arrived at baby’s home. “As the information I’ve got,

they were just arriving from the old house to take baby’s milk. Well, after returning to the house (the scene), Aliani just would like to jack the motorcycle. Suddenly, they were hit by the truck from behind. They were pinched under the truck,” he said. As a result of the incident, the aunt was pinched and found dead with the condition of unfolded belly. The toddler’s body was still intact, but only suffered bruises. Meanwhile, the motorcycle ridden by the victim was totally destroyed. Similarly, the house hit by the truck collapsed. “At that time, at the house there was the father (of the toddler Maharani) seeing in person the incident and shocked, while his wife was going to work. She was shocked as well. Both are faint and still being pacified at home,” he said sadly. No one thought and there were even no feelings about such incident. The family claimed to be quite shocked because they had to experience the disasters claiming

two members of the family. “As the destiny of life says, no one knows what will happen. Moreover, the two-year-old toddler is still cute, I cannot bear it in mind,” said one of the female relatives asking for anonymity. She said with tears in her eyes. Daily, he said, the toddler victim is taken care of by her aunt, while her mother, Ni Wayan Neni, daily works at a hotel in the area of Seminyak, Kuta. His father, Komang Diomantara, does not work and just stays at home. “Yes, she is raised by her aunt, so that her mother can work,” he said. According to Jastra, after being examined the two bodies will be directly returned to the funeral home to be buried. 243 exhibition booths prepared for BAF 2017 DENPASAR - A total of 243 temporary exhibition booths are prepared for the Bali Arts Festival (BAF) 2017. Craftsmen or Small and Medium Industries (IKM) have been invited to register at the district or municipal industry and commerce agency. Furthermore, they will be selected by a selection team consisting of various components. “Registration can be made in each district or municipality across Bali. After the district or municipality gives recommendation, the registration is then submitted to the province,” said the Head of the Bali Industry and Commerce Agency, Ni Wayan Kusumawathi, when confirmed on Wednesday (Apr. 19). According to her, the requirements to get a booth in the BAF remain the same as last year. Small and Medium Industries must meet a number of requirements related to legality aspects. Among them, the applicants must domicile in Bali, have an industrial registry (TDI) or industrial business license (IUI) and taxpayer identity number (NPWP). “Booth rental is in accordance with gubernatorial regulation,” she added. SEOUL - South Koreans who have lost their jobs or gone out of business will be allowed to delay repaying principal on their loans for up to three years, starting from the second half of this year, the Financial Services Commission (FSC) said in a statement. The plan aims to reduce the debt burden on some of the country’s most vulnerable households as borrowing costs rise. The FSC will require banks and financial institutions to implement the changes within this year so that qualifying borrowers can refinance their debt if they wish.

For households with mortgages to qualify for delayed repayment, the property they own must be valued at 600 million won ($525,000) or less, and they will still need to make interest payments. The Bank of Korea’s eight cuts in benchmark interest rates since 2012 to the current rock-bottom 1.25 percent have prompted a borrowing binge that has sent household debt to a record high. In the fourth quarter of last year household debt soared 11.7 percent from a year earlier to 1,344.3 trillion won, the fastest pace in over

a decade, as borrowers continued to take advantage of record-low interest rates. But home loans and credit extended to households grew at a slower pace in the first quarter of this year compared to a year earlier, the FSC said, without disclosing the total amount outstanding. While risks stemming from rising household debt are expected to stabilize going forward, the debtservicing capacity of low-income households may fall as market interest rates rise, the regulator said.(rtr)

Ulunsuwi Temple is located in the northern most VENERATED by members of Subak Sangeh. On particular days, subak members perform a ceremony as an expression of gratitude to God for the graces bestowed. In the southern part sits the Taman Beji Temple with three fountains as destination of melasti (physical and psychical purification) procession. Remaining in the region, there is Segara Kelebutan Temple in the form of three-tiered meru shrine located in the middle of the pond. In the south of the pond precisely under a banyan tree sits the representative temple of Taman Ayun. This temple was established when making the pond that was never finished. Its levees were always broken. Seeing this condition, the royal figure of Mengwi was invited to come. After that, the levees of the lake became very strong, so that it was then made a shrine to worship the deities of Taman Ayun. Meanwhile, the Ratu Gede Temple is used to venerate the guardian in the psychical ream of the pond. The middle courtyard of the Taman Mumbul Temple is located in the east of the area. This temple is VENERATED by the Brahmana hamlet. There is also a Pengelukatan Temple marked by eleven fountains. Here, the residents do self-purificatory rite (melukat) physically and psychically accompanied by the presentation of the offerings. Sangeh community believes that Ratu Niang abides at this temple. Then, the southernmost shrine is bebaturan (menhir) used to worship wong samar (supernatural beings). “Therefore, we always urge visitors to always prioritize ethics as the region the Taman Mumbul area is rich in objects and sacred places,” he said. This arrangement, explained I.B. Dipa, is meant to make the place attractive and comfortable to be visited. The arrangement workmanship started in 2016. Thankfully, it can be operated in late 2016. Arrangement of the area was funded by assistance of Badung government and village treasury. “The assistance of Badung government is worth IDR 4 billion and village treasury approximately amounted to IDR 500 million,” he said. In the meantime, the outermost courtyard located at southernmost area (after the Pengelukatan Temple) will be made into water attraction equipped with a pool of children and adult. Brazil agrees to lower police retirement age after violent protest

BRASILIA - The Brazilian government on Wednesday agreed to lower the minimum retirement age for police officers in a pension reform, a day after members of their unions stormed Congress to protest the controversial bill aimed reining in soaring public debt.

Congressman Arthur Maia, a government ally sponsoring the bill, reduced the minimum retirement age for police to 55 from 60 in his draft of the reform. Finance Minister Henrique Meirelles called the concession to police unions “symbolic” and said it would have little impact on the fiscal result of the bill. Still, he said he saw little room left for more compromises with interest groups. “I think we are more or less at the limit of the changes than can be made without substantially altering the country’s fiscal balance,” he told reporters in Washington. After Maia revealed the details of his original proposal on Tuesday, hundreds of police union members dressed in black shirts broke the windows of the main entrance of the legislature in Brasilia and clashed with congressional guards.

The violent incident, in which the guards used pepper spray and stun grenades to disperse the protesters, highlighted the unpopularity of the reform proposal that is central to President Michel Temer’s austerity agenda. Labor unions are threatening months of street demonstrations even after Temer has repeatedly watered down the proposal, which would trim some of the world’s most generous pension benefits in order to boost investor confidence in Brazil’s slumping economy. Meirelles said he still expects the reform to pass by June. The initial vote on the proposal has been set for May 2 at the commission. As a constitutional amendment, the measure has to be approved by a three-fifths majority in separate votes by both houses of Congress. WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump’s administration on Wednesday denied being misleading about a U.S. carrier strike group’s push toward the Korean peninsula, saying it never gave an arrival date and that the ships were still on their way. When Trump boasted early last week that he had sent an “armada” as a warning to North Korea, the USS Carl Vinson strike group was still far from the Korean peninsula, and headed in the opposite direction. The U.S. military’s Pacific Command explained on Tuesday that the strike group first had to complete a shorter-than-initially planned period of training with Australia but was now heading toward the Western Pacific. “The president said that we have an armada going towards the peninsula. That’s a fact. It happened. It is happening, rather,” said White House spokesman Sean Spicer. He referred further queries about the deployment timetable to the Pentagon. The U.S. military initially said in a statement dated April 10 that Admiral Harry Harris, the commander of Pacific Command, directed the Vinson strike group “to sail north and report on station in the Western Pacific.” But the strike group first headed elsewhere, On April 15, the U.S.

Indonesian prosecutors seek suspended jail term for Jakarta governor

JAKARTA - Indonesian prosecutors on Thursday recommended a one-year suspended jail sentence for Jakarta’s Christian governor in his blasphemy trial, which has been seen as a test of the Muslim-majority nation’s religious tolerance. The call for a relatively light sentence came as Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, 50, was heading for defeat in Wednesday’s election against his Muslim

opponent Anies Baswedan. The religiously charged campaign saw mass Islamist-led protests against the incumbent for allegedly insulting Islam.

“We call for the judge to sentence the defendant to one-year in prison with two years probation ..for expressing hate or insult toward a section of the Indonesian people,” chief prosecutor Ali Mukartono said in court. The sentence recommendation means that Purnama would not have to serve time in jail unless he were to repeat the offence within two years, Purnama’s lawyer Humphrey Armri Djemat told Reuters. MADRID - After sealing their place in the Champions League semi-final, Real Madrid can take a huge step towards claiming a first La Liga title in five years when they host great rivals Barcelona in El Clasico on Sunday.

An injury-time Sergio Ramos equaliser ensured Madrid maintained a six-point cushion over Luis Enrique’s side when the sides met earlier this season, and with Los Blancos currently three points ahead with a game in hand, victory would leave Barca trailing by the same margin with only five to play. Real are unbeaten since February, winning 10 of their last 12 games. In contrast, Barcelona have won just two of their previous five in all competitions and were dumped out of Europe in midweek. The Catalans’ task is made all the more difficult given forward Neymar’s suspension. MONACO — Perhaps the only thing stopping Monaco this season will be exhaustion. After scoring 141 goals, Leonardo Jardim’s team tops the French league and remains on course for the treble after reaching the Champions League semifinals on Wednesday, dispatching German side Borussia Dortmund 6-3 on aggregate. It is also in the last four of the French Cup. The first of Monaco’s 141 goals was scored by striker Radamel Falcao way back on July 27, against Turkish side Fenerbahce in the third qualifying round of the Champions League. Fast forward to the present and Falcao, who scored in Wednesday’s 3-1 win against Dortmund with a superb diving header, has 27. “At the start of the season not many people would have thought the team would do this well, or that I would,” said Falcao, who has fought back from disappointing loan spells with MANCHESTER UNITED and Chelsea following a serious knee injury. “I feel appreciated and supported by the club and by the players. My family is settled and this helps me play better.” Monaco leads defending champion Paris Saint-Germain on goal difference in the league, having played one game less, and faces a hectic run-in. That starts with a difficult trip to Lyon on Sunday, followed by a French Cup semifinal against PSG three days later in Paris. MILAN - Ever the perfectionist, Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri still sees room for improvement in his side even after they taught Barcelona a lesson in how to play a two-leg European tie. The Serie A champions tore into Barcelona to win the home league 3-0 one week ago, then gave a defensive masterclass, comfortably containing Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar, as they held out for a 0-0 draw in the return on Wednesday. Allegri, however, said that Juventus could have made life easier for themselves if they had taken advantage of the space Barcelona offered them as the game wore on. “Where do we need to improve?
