He was rushed to intensive care with fluid in his lungs after performing a three-hour concert Sunday at a resort on the Las Vegas Strip as part of his “Volver” tour. The publicist says Gabriel will rest in Las Vegas and Los Angeles until his tour resumes May 1 in Los Angeles. He was

forced to postpone three shows during his hospitalization. Gabriel is one of the best-selling Latin recording artists of all time.

WASHINGTON — A judge has set Monday as the start date for the assault trial of singer Chris Brown in the nation’s capital. During a brief court appearance Friday in which he wore a suit and tie, Brown turned to wave and salute supporters in the courtroom including his mother and the rapper Bow Wow. The case that begins Monday is significant for the Grammy winner not only because he faces up to six months in jail but also because if convicted he could face additional penalties, including jail time, as a result of an earlier case from California. At the time he was arrested in Washington, Brown was on probation in Los Angeles for an attack on his thengirlfriend, the singer Rihanna, in 2009. Brown entered anger management rehab at a California facility shortly after his Washington arrest, but he was dismissed from it in mid-March for violating its rules. He was then jailed and has been in custody since. Besides giving Brown a trial date Friday, D.C. Superior Court Judge Pa-

tricia Wynn had been expected to rule in the assault trial of Brown’s bodyguard, Christopher Hollosy. But Wynn delayed giving her verdict, saying she needed more time before ruling. That is expected Monday, followed by the start of Brown’s trial. Both Brown and Hollosy are facing a misdemeanor assault charge in the same October skirmish in which a Maryland man accused them of punching him outside a Washington hotel.

Hollosy told police he punched 20year-old Parker Adams after the man tried to get on Brown’s tour bus. Adams told police a different story. He said Brown and later Hollosy punched him after he tried to get in a photo the singer was taking and the men exchanged words. Brown has denied hitting Adams. Hollosy did not testify at his own trial, which began Thursday and ended Friday, but he is expected to testify at Brown’s and say that he, not Brown, hit Adams.

JINDO - Divers began retrieving bodies Sunday from inside the submerged South Korean ferry that capsized four days ago with hundreds of children on board, as families angered by the pace of the rescue efforts scuffled with police.

Coastguard officials said 16 bodies had been removed from the ship which sank on Wednesday morning, pushing operations further along the painful transition from rescue to recovery and identification. The retrieval of the first bodies from the interior came after prosecutors revealed that the officer at the helm of the 6,825-tonne Sewol when it capsized was not familiar with those particular waters.

The confirmed death toll from the disaster stood at 56 with 246 people still unaccounted for. Three bodies were pulled out of the fully submerged ferry just before midnight and another 13 were recovered later Sunday morning, a coastguard spokesman said. The breakthrough followed days of fruitless efforts by more than 500 divers to access the capsized ship, while battling powerful currents and

near-zero visibility. It was a watershed moment for distraught relatives who have clung desperately to the idea that some passengers may have survived in air pockets in the upturned vessel. The bodies were placed in tents at the harbour on Jindo island -- not far from the disaster site -- where the relatives have been camped out in a gymnasium since the ferry went down. In a process that looks set to be repeated with tragic frequency in the coming days, they were checked for IDs and other particulars, after which their relatives were informed and asked to make an official identification. Exhibition of 20 imported bonsai trees draw interest of travelers Bali Post

GIANYAR - A total of 20 imported bonsai trees brought in from several countries and property of bonsai hobbyists were exhibited at Astina Square in Gianyar in conjunction with the 243rd anniversary of Gianyar town. “Dozens of bonsai trees on display include the type of Kimeng, Fir, Hokiyanti, Brazilian Orange and local variety,” explained Wayan Artana, a bonsai hobbyist, Friday (Apr 8). Hundreds of the bonsai trees on display were owned by hobbyists from Bali and some other regions outside Bali such as Bandung, Central Java and East Java. “The bonsai on display during the anniversary activity of Gianyar town belongs to rare trees specially maintained and preserved in the form of bonsai art,” he said. Those bonsai trees displayed on the overlay of grass of the Astina Square drew the attention of the public. TABANAN - The Electoral Commission (KPU) of Tabanan County planned to hold a vote plenary recapitulation of the legislative election of Tabanan region, Sunday (Apr 20), located in the Maria Cultural Hall. As planned, the county plenary recapitulation would start at nine o’clock in the morning. To secure the entire agenda, the ranks of police and military would deploy 441 personnel. “There are three targets of the security, inherent security on the electoral commissioners, electoral supervisory committee and the location. recapitulation the votes would be strictly escorted to the provincial Electoral Commission. MANGUPURA - An inmate of the Kerobokan Prison belonging to class II A Denpasar, Hendra Selatumena, 31, was arrested by the ranks of the North Kuta Police, Thursday (Apr 17). This convict of narcotic-related case was arrested because he was found bringing along the evidence of drug belonging to heroine type. Hendra is now still undergoing investigation in the North Kuta Police. Chief of North Kuta Police, Renhard A.N., accompanied by Chief of Kuta Police Criminal Investigation Panji Pratista explained on Friday (Apr 18) that such incident started from the occupant of block I, named Nanang, 26, who did not participate in the rally on Wednesday (Apr 16) around 6:00 p.m. In fact, this inmate getting involved in drug case of crystal meth type was hiding in another block for fear of being collected his debt by Hendra. “The next day, Hendra who was called into the room of prison chief delivered if Nanang inhabiting block I has a debt worth IDR 2 million,” he said.

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Everest avalanche a reminder of risks Sherpas face

KATMANDU, Nepal — The rescuers moved quickly, minutes after the first block of ice tore loose from Mount Everest and started an avalanche that roared down the mountain, ripping through teams of guides hauling gear. But they couldn’t get there quickly enough. No one can move that fast. Not even the people who have spent their lives in Everest’s shadow, and who have spent years working on the world’s highest peak.

By Saturday evening, the bodies of 13 Sherpa guides had been taken from the mountain. Three more were missing, though few held out hope they were still alive, 36 hours after Friday’s avalanche. Four survivors had been flown to hospitals in Katmandu, Nepal’s capital, where they were in stable condition. It was the deadliest disaster ever on Mount Everest. For the Sherpas, the once-obscure mountain people whose name has become synonymous with Everest, and whose entire culture has been changed by decades of working as guides and porters for wealthy foreigners, it was a brutal reminder of the risks they face. Many gathered Saturday at the Boudha Monastery in Katmandu, where prayers were said for the dead. “The mountains are a death trap,” said Norbu Tshering, a 50-year-old Sherpa and mountain guide who now lives mostly in Katmandu. With his white hair and dark, wrinkled skin, he looked far older than his age. In hands roughened by years of tough work, he worked a string of Buddhist prayer beads. “But we have no other work, and most of our people take up this profession, which has now become a tradition for all of us,” he said.

The avalanche happened early Friday morning at about 5,800 meters (19,000 feet), as Sherpa guides were hauling gear through the Khumbu icefall, a treacherous terrain of crevasses and enormous chunks of ice. The men were near an area known to climbers as the “popcorn field,” because if its bulging ice, when an enormous piece broke away from a high glacier and came tumbling down the mountain, setting off an avalanche of ice, according to the website of International Mountain Guides, an Ashford, Washingtonbased company that had a team that witnessed the disaster. Nepalese tourism officials said the guides had been fixing ropes — using clamps and special screws to attach miles of nylon cord used by the streams of climbers who begin heading for the summit this time of year. But guiding companies said the ropes had already been laid down, and the Sherpas were carrying loads of tents, oxygen tanks and other gear to the higher camps used by climbers as they approach the summit. They were quickly called back after the avalanche to start building a new path, though climbing had been halted for at least a couple of days. International Mountain Guides said on its website that many climbers had been pleased by the icefall doctors’ work this year, since lines had been fixed in an area “that is normally not so

exposed to the frequent slides.” When the avalanche hit, dozens of climbers and guides raced from the base camp — the mini-city of nylon and prayer flags and nightly parties built every year for its hundreds of temporary residents — in search of survivors, said Prakash Adhikari of the Himalayan Rescue Association, which has a medical team at the camp.

But while the icefall is barely 500 meters (547 yards) higher than base camp, it can easily take a couple of hours to reach the popcorn field, even for the strongest climbers. It’s unclear whether any of the dead could have been saved, even with immediate rescue. Many probably died instantly, hit by blocks of ice that can easily be larger than a car.

Chairman of the BBTF organizing committee Ketut Ardana said the travel fair will attract sellers and potential buyers expected to generate transactions worth Rp3 trillion to Rp5 trillion during the event. “We invested funds amounting to IDR21.7 billion to organize this event,” he added. BBTF 2014 is the first travel fair applying business-tobusiness and business-to-consumer concepts. The fair’s theme is “Gateway to Indonesia’s Creative Tourism.” “This will serve as a forum where sellers from Indonesia’s tourism sector will meet domestic as well as foreign buyers from countries, such as Australia and China, as well as the ASEAN member nations, the Middle Eastern countries and the European nations,” he said. A business meeting organized on the sidelines of the fair will be attended by about 450 domestic sellers and 350 foreign buyers from 55 countries. Garuda Indonesia to celebrate World Earth Day, which falls on April 22nd, local residents and tourists collected three tons of garbage and waste from the island’s beaches. The beach clean-up program was also supported by some domestic and international surfing communities. Some 600 people were involved in the clean-up program, which covered five kilometers along the coastline. “We are aware that such programs offer a small contribution to solving the entire environmental problem. SEMARAPURA - Road users passing on Jalan Puputan Klungkung were made anxious. It happened because the provincial road collapsed. As a result, half of the road collapsed and greatly endangered road users. Based on information of local residents, some road users frequently fell into a big pothole at night. One of the residents, Made Mandra, said on Saturday that the damage to the road had happened quite a long time. Initially, it was only a small pothole, but it enlarged in the long run after some heavy rains. Diameter of the pothole reached almost four meters. “Initially, the sidewalk was broken down. In fact, it caused a big enough hole reaching the middle of the highway,” he said. He claimed to see road user falling into the pothole several times. So, he asked in order the road damage could get immediate repair from relevant agency of Bali Province. Moreover, the damage was just to the east of Kertha Gosa tourist attraction, where the road was often used to park buses carrying foreign travelers. Another resident, AA Anom, said on Saturday the damage to the road in the Semarapura town center should be repaired immediately. It should be attempted to prevent another victim because the Jalan Puputan road section was very crowded every day denoting

one of the main lines to the central intersection of Klungkung. “Now, the pothole is getting bigger and the collapsed road is also getting worse. Without immediate repair, Jalan Puputan can be broken off,” he said. He also heard that the road damage was often complained by foreign travelers because the Kertha Gosa tourist attraction was lately thronged by many foreign travelers. Other than in front of the Kertha Gosa, the potholes were also found along Jalan Puputan and they were very hazardous. Likewise, the sidewalk was also hazardous. The Head of Klungkung Public Works Agency, AA Ngurah Agung, admitted last Saturday to have received the complaints related to the damage to Jalan Puputan for several times. Damage to the road had also received a handling. His party had initiative to install street sign of damaged road and potholes around the broken down road and to stretch a police line. In addition, early handling had also been done to dismantle the hazardous

part and restrict users so as not to pass the road. The potholes were large enough and almost reached half of the collapsed road. “Before claiming another victim, we should dismantle and repair it at once,” said Ngurah Agung. The Public Works Agency of Klungkung was said to have made coordination with the Bali Public Works. In several meetings, Jalan Puputan was said to become the responsibility of the province. As planned, the team of Bali Province would come down to location on Monday (Apr 21) to determine further repair measures. Without prompt repair, the road would be more seriously damaged and one of the four main lines could be disrupted. His party was unable to make sure how much budget to be needed. Estimation of the budget spent by the province could be ascertained after checking the condition. “Usually, the damage to road as happened to Jalan Puputan can be quickly dealt with after the checking made by the Bali Public Works Agency,” he explained. The Head of Forensic Medical Installation of Sanglah Hospital, Dudut Rustyadi, explained that from external examination was found bruises on forehead and right forearm as well as abrasion at lower lip and on the wrists and right lower knee. “There were no vital signs of violence resulting in death,” said Dudut. Regarding the victim’s death, it was alleged to have been caused by drinking alcoholic beverages. According to Dudut, it should be ascertained through autopsy and toxicological examination. Such examination could not be performed because it was still waiting for approval of his family. Meanwhile, the death due to alcohol, continued Dudut, very rarely happened. The death could occur quickly if it was added with other chemicals such as methanol. “The death rarely happens purely caused by alcohol. All this time, there is no such a case at Sanglah Hospital,” said Dudut. Pure alcohol in a drink could cause death if it was taken as much as a keg or the drinkers had other diseases that could arise as a result of the alcohol consumption. The Bluefin 21 unmanned sub began its eighth trip into the depths off the coast of western Australia. Its search area forms a 10-kilometer (6.2-mile) circle around the location of an underwater signal that was believed to have come from the aircraft’s black boxes before their batteries died. The sonar scan of the seafloor in that area is expected to be completed in five to seven days, the search center said. Malaysian Defense Minister Hishammuddin Hussein stressed the importance of the weekend missions to reporters in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday. “The narrowing of the search for today and tomorrow is at a very critical juncture, so I appeal to everybody around the world to pray and pray hard that we find something to work on over the next couple of days,” he said. But he added that there were no plans to give up once the Bluefin concludes its work. Instead, he said the scope of the search may be broadened or other assets may be used. “The search will always continue,” he said. “It is just a matter of approach. Radar and satellite data show it mysteriously veered far off course for unknown reasons and would have run out of fuel in the remote section of the southern Indian Ocean where the search has been focused. Not one piece of debris has been recovered since the massive hunt began. The tiresome search, which continues to raise more questions than answers, has tormented the families whose loved ones were aboard Flight 370. About twothirds of the passengers were Chinese. There have been numerous leads throughout the painstaking hunt, but all have turned out to be false. The latest hope involved an oil slick found near the underwater search area, but analysis of a sample taken from the site found it was not connected to the plane. The most promising development came when four underwater signals were detected April 5 and 8. He said he regularly visits Yasukuni at spring and autumn festivals, and on Aug. 15 —the day Japan surrendered in 1945. He chose to go over the weekend because he had duties to attend to during the week. Officials’ visits to Yasukuni have infuriated China and both Koreas. The 2.5 million Japanese war dead enshrined there include 14 class A war criminals from World War II — national leaders who were either executed, died in prison or during their trials. This year’s April 21-23 spring festival at Yasukuni partially overlaps with President Barack Obama’s trip to Japan, part of an Asian tour that also includes South Korea, the Philippines and Malaysia. Japan colonized Korea, and during World War II also brutally occupied parts of China and other countries.

The dogs, worth hundreds of millions of rupiah, were smuggled from Java to Bali on April 11, and they were euthanized after no one claimed their ownership after 24 hours, Ida Bagus Eka Ludra of the Bali Agricultural Quarantine Office reported. Two Persian cats and several birds, which were also smuggled on the same day, were returned to Java as the identity of their owners remained unknown. “We euthanized the dogs because no one claimed to be the owners,” Ludra stated. He pointed out that the animals smuggled into Bali were not automatically euthanized. The authorities will wait for 24 hours to get the necessary documents, before returning the animals to their places of origin or culling them if no one claimed ownership. Regarding the 31 dogs, he

claimed that his officers had tried to get in touch with the names written on the dogs’ cages, but they denied that they owned the dogs. “We do not want to take any risks, as Bali was once hit by rabies. So, we euthanized the dogs in accordance with the procedures,” he remarked. In line with the Agriculture Ministry’s Regulation No. 1696/2008, Bali has been named as a mad dog disease quarantine area. “According to the regulation, animals, such as dogs, cats, and monkeys, which could carry the rabies virus, are currently banned from entering Bali. The regulation is still effective and not yet revoked,” he emphasized. Animal smuggling also violates the Bali Governor Regulation No. 88/2008 and the Law No. 16/1992.

NUSA DUA - The Indonesian government is facilitating a marine and fisheries product certification program for developing countries through the world fisheries conference held by The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) in Nusa Dua, recently. “There are ten developing countries participating in this conference,” said Director General of Processing and Marketing of the Ministry of Maritime and Fisheries Affairs Saut P Hutagalung. As an institution of international fisheries which gives ecolabel certification in developing countries, Saut said that MSC ensures that all fish which go on sale were caught without damaging the environment. “Indonesia, as one of the leading fishing nations in the world, has great interest in certification which supports environmental sustainability,” he said. Saut said that the ecolabel certification is a requirement for getting entry into the export market. “Ecolabel certification is also part of the government’s policies which lead to sustainable fisheries management,” he said.

The Indonesian government is currently working on getting MSC certification for tuna, crab, red snapper and grouper, which are the main fish exports. In 2013, the value of fish exports reached US$4.2 billion, with the main export markets being the EU countries, Japan and the United States. Of the total amount, tuna exports contributed $764 million and crab exports contributed $359 million. While red snapper exports brought in $11.7 million, grouper exports contributed $29 million. “The marine products are in the process of obtaining MSC certification,” Saut said. Meanwhile, MSC Director David Agnew explained that the certification will provide added value to fishery products in the global market. “The global markets need certification for the sake of building a longterm and sustainable fisheries sector. Currently, there are 220 species of fish in the world which are included in this program,” he said. According to Agnew, these requirements are not specified by the authorities but by the global market, such as in North America, South America, North Africa and Japan.

PARIS — Four French journalists kidnapped and held for 10 months in Syria returned home Sunday to joyful families, a presidential welcome and questions about how France managed to obtain their freedom from Islamic extremists. The four — Edouard Elias, Didier Francois, Nicolas Henin and Pierre Torres — were freed by their kidnappers a day earlier at the Turkish border. They were captured in two separate incidents last June. At an emotional welcome ceremony at Villacoublay military airport outside Paris, President Francois Hollande saluted their return as “a moment of joy” for France. “This is a day of great joy for them as you can imagine, for their families ... but it is a day of great joy for France,” he said. BPPT develops e-voting system for 2019 general elections Antara

JAKARTA - The Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT) is currently developing an electronic voting (e-voting) system to be implemented in the 2019 general elections. The e-voting system applying information and communications technology, would be used in legislative elections, presidential and vicepresidential elections, as well as regional head elections, BPPT Chairman Marzain Iskandar said as quoted on the website of the Cabinet Secretariat, Sunday. E-voting is an election system that uses encryption to allow a voter to transmit his or her secure and secret ballot over the Internet. Marzain Iskandar explained that the e-voting system would have some advantages because it would make the counting of the elections’ results faster, more accountable, and more accurate. It would also make every phase of the general elections more easily audited, he stated. The implementation of this system will not disturb the principles of direct, public, free,

and fair elections because voting secrecy is guaranteed. The e-voting system will also lower the cost of general elections by 25 percent compare to that of the general elections using manual system, as the electronic voting system will eliminate ballot papers. He stated that the electronic voting system will use the electronic identification cards (e-KTP) as the identities of eligible voters. “So, citizens can just bring their electronic identification cards (e-KTP) to the polling stations. The cards will then be verified, and the residents can cast their votes by pressing certain buttons. In short, all processes will proceed effectively,” he said. Other countries such as the US, Brazil, Norway, Germany, Venezuela, India, Canada, Belgium, Romania, Australia, UK, and Italy have used e-voting system in their general elections. The BPPT chief called on Indonesian law makers to produce a law introducing the application of e-voting system in the next general elections in 2019.

The worshippers were holding a traditional sea ritual in waters off Flores Island when one of the wooden boats sank before noon, district police chief Dewa Putu Gede Artha said. Fifty-three people were rescued in the incident which happened off the coast from Larantuka town, in the East Flores district of East Nusa Tenggara province. “We found seven bodies, including three children,” Gede Artha told AFP, adding that the boat was on its way to join other vessels for the Easter celebration. The exact number onboard is not known, and rescuers were still searching for possible survivors, the police chief said, with officials gathering information from relatives about those who may be missing. District disaster management agency chief Paulus Igo Geroda said that four people remained missing, based on relatives’ accounts, and that the other 30 to 40 boats which joined the ritual have returned safely. The Indonesian archipelago of more than 17,000 islands has a poor sea safety record, and fatal accidents are common.

Liverpool’s title prospects got an unlikely boost on Saturday from an Italian striker they have loaned out to Sunderland when Fabio Borini’s penalty stunned Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Borini made just 13 Premier League appearances for Liverpool in an injury-ravaged first season and after sitting on the bench for three matches this term he joined the Black Cats. His 82nd minute spot kick goal in a 2-1 win over Chelsea helped Sunderland’s relegation fight and did his parent club a huge favour in their bid for a first league title in 24 years. It was the first time in 78 matches that Jose Mourinho had lost a home league match at Chelsea and left the London club two points behind Liverpool who visit Norwich City on Sunday. VATICAN CITY — Celebrating Easter Sunday, Christianity’s most joyous and hopeful day, Pope Francis prayed for peace in Ukraine and Syria and for an end to the terrorist attacks in Nigeria that have targeted so many Christians. More than 150,000 tourists — Romans and pilgrims, young and old — had turned out for the Mass he celebrated at an altar set up under a canopy on the steps of St. Peter’s Basilica. So many came that they overflowed the huge square, which was bedecked with row after row of potted daffodils, sprays of blue hyacinths and bunches of white roses. Invoking God, he said, “We ask you to enlighten and inspire the initiatives that promote peace in Ukraine, so that all those involved, with the support of the international community, will make every effort to prevent violence.” Tensions between pro-Russian supporters in Ukraine and those loyal to the interim government in Kiev have sparked bloodshed in recent days. Francis also prayed that all sides in Syria will be moved to “boldly negotiate the peace long awaited and long overdue.” Since March 2011, Syria has been wracked by a civil war that has cost 150,000 lives and forced millions to flee the country. Francis makes a pilgrimage to Jordan, the Palestinian territories and Israel next month. On Easter, he prayed that hopes sparked by the resumption of Mideast peace negotiations be sustained. PARIS — Four French journalists kidnapped and held for 10 months in Syria returned home Sunday to joyful families, a presidential welcome and questions about how France managed to obtain their freedom from Islamic extremists. The four — Edouard Elias, Didier Francois, Nicolas Henin and Pierre Torres — were freed by their kidnappers a day earlier at the Turkish border. They were captured in two separate incidents last June. At an emotional welcome ceremony at Villacoublay military airport outside Paris, President Francois Hollande saluted their return as “a moment of joy” for France. “This is a day of great joy for them as you can imagine, for their families ... but it is a day of great joy for France,” he said. Hollande saluted Turkish authorities for helping in the journalists’ return but did not elaborate. “It’s such a delight and a relief to be free, to see the sky ... to breath the fresh air, to walk, to talk to you,” said Francois, a noted war reporter for Europe 1. Elias, a freelance photographer, also was working for Europe 1 radio. Henin and Torres are freelance journalists. JAKARTA - The Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT) is currently developing an electronic voting (e-voting) system to be implemented in the 2019 general elections. The e-voting system applying information and communications technology, would be used in legislative elections, presidential and vicepresidential elections, as well as regional head elections, BPPT Chairman Marzain Iskandar said as quoted on the website of the Cabinet Secretariat, Sunday. E-voting is an election system that uses encryption to allow a voter to transmit his or her secure and secret ballot over the Internet. Marzain Iskandar explained that the e-voting system would have some advantages because it would make the counting of the elections’ results faster, more accountable, and more accurate. It would also make every phase of the general elections more easily audited, he stated. The implementation of this system will not disturb the principles of direct, public, free,

and fair elections because voting secrecy is guaranteed. The e-voting system will also lower the cost of general elections by 25 percent compare to that of the general elections using manual system, as the electronic voting system will eliminate ballot papers. He stated that the electronic voting system will use the electronic identification cards (e-KTP) as the identities of eligible voters. “So, citizens can just bring their electronic identification cards (e-KTP) to the polling stations. The cards will then be verified, and the residents can cast their votes by pressing certain buttons. In short, all processes will proceed effectively,” he said. Other countries such as the US, Brazil, Norway, Germany, Venezuela, India, Canada, Belgium, Romania, Australia, UK, and Italy have used e-voting system in their general elections. The BPPT chief called on Indonesian law makers to produce a law introducing the application of e-voting system in the next general elections in 2019.

Fifty-three people were rescued in the incident which happened off the coast from Larantuka town, in the East Flores district of East Nusa Tenggara province. “We found seven bodies, including three children,” Gede Artha told AFP, adding that the boat was on its way to join other vessels for the Easter celebration. The exact number onboard is not known, and rescuers were still searching for possible survivors, the police chief said, with officials gathering information from relatives about those who may be missing. District disaster management agency chief Paulus Igo Geroda said that four people remained missing, based on relatives’ accounts, and that the other 30 to 40 boats which joined the ritual have returned safely. Two Persian cats and several birds, which were also smuggled on the same day, were returned to Java as the identity of their owners remained unknown. “We euthanized the dogs because no one claimed to be the owners,” Ludra stated. He pointed out that the animals smuggled into Bali were not automatically euthanized. The authorities will wait for 24 hours to get the necessary documents, before returning the animals to their places of origin or culling them if no one claimed ownership. Regarding the 31 dogs, he

claimed that his officers had tried to get in touch with the names written on the dogs’ cages, but they denied that they owned the dogs. “We do not want to take any risks, as Bali was once hit by rabies. So, we euthanized the dogs in accordance with the procedures,” he remarked. In line with the Agriculture Ministry’s Regulation No. 1696/2008, Bali has been named as a mad dog disease quarantine area. “According to the regulation, animals, such as dogs, cats, and monkeys, which could carry the rabies virus, are currently banned from entering Bali. The regulation is still effective and not yet revoked,” he emphasized. Animal smuggling also violates the Bali Governor Regulation No. 88/2008 and the Law No. 16/1992.

As an institution of international fisheries which gives ecolabel certification in developing countries, Saut said that MSC ensures that all fish which go on sale were caught without damaging the environment. “Indonesia, as one of the leading fishing nations in the world, has great interest in certification which supports environmental sustainability,” he said. Saut said that the ecolabel certification is a requirement for getting entry into the export market. “Ecolabel certification is also part of the government’s policies which lead to sustainable fisheries management,” he said.

The Indonesian government is currently working on getting MSC certification for tuna, crab, red snapper and grouper, which are the main fish exports. In 2013, the value of fish exports reached US$4.2 billion, with the main export markets being the EU countries, Japan and the United States. Of the total amount, tuna exports contributed $764 million and crab exports contributed $359 million. While red snapper exports brought in $11.7 million, grouper exports contributed $29 million. “The marine products are in the process of obtaining MSC certification,” Saut said. Meanwhile, MSC Director David Agnew explained that the certification will provide added value to fishery products in the global market. “The global markets need certification for the sake of building a longterm and sustainable fisheries sector. Currently, there are 220 species of fish in the world which are included in this program,” he said. According to Agnew, these requirements are not specified by the authorities but by the global market, such as in North America, South America, North Africa and Japan.

One of the residents, Made Mandra, said on Saturday that the damage to the road had happened quite a long time. Initially, it was only a small pothole, but it enlarged in the long run after some heavy rains. Diameter of the pothole reached almost four meters. “Initially, the sidewalk was broken down. In fact, it caused a big enough hole reaching the middle of the highway,” he said. He claimed to see road user falling into the pothole several times. So, he asked in order the road damage could get immediate repair from relevant agency of Bali Province. Moreover, the damage was just to the east of Kertha Gosa tourist attraction, where the road was often used to park buses carrying foreign travelers. Another resident, AA Anom, said on Saturday the damage to the road in the Semarapura town center should be repaired immediately. Without immediate repair, Jalan Puputan can be broken off,” he said. The Head of Forensic Medical Installation of Sanglah Hospital, Dudut Rustyadi, explained that from external examination was found bruises on forehead and right forearm as well as abrasion at lower lip and on the wrists and right lower knee. “There were no vital signs of violence resulting in death,” said Dudut. Regarding the victim’s death, it was alleged to have been caused by drinking alcoholic beverages. According to Dudut, it should be ascertained through autopsy and toxicological examination. Such examination could not be performed because it was still waiting for approval of his family. Meanwhile, the death due to alcohol, continued Dudut, very rarely happened. The death could occur quickly if it was added with other chemicals such as methanol. “The death rarely happens purely caused by alcohol. All this time, there is no such a case at Sanglah Hospital,” said Dudut. Pure alcohol in a drink could cause death if it was taken as much as a keg or the drinkers had other diseases that could arise as a result of the alcohol consumption. But he added that there were no plans to give up once the Bluefin concludes its work. Not one piece of debris has been recovered since the massive hunt began. The latest hope involved an oil slick found near the underwater search area, but analysis of a sample taken from the site found it was not connected to the plane. He said he regularly visits Yasukuni at spring and autumn festivals, and on Aug. 15 —the day Japan surrendered in 1945. He chose to go over the weekend because he had duties to attend to during the week. Officials’ visits to Yasukuni have infuriated China and both Koreas. The 2.5 million Japanese war dead enshrined there include 14 class A war criminals from World War II — national leaders who were either executed, died in prison or during their trials. This year’s April 21-23 spring festival at Yasukuni partially overlaps with President Barack Obama’s trip to Japan, part of an Asian tour that also includes South Korea, the Philippines and Malaysia. Japan colonized Korea, and during World War II also brutally occupied parts of China and other countries.

Everest avalanche a reminder of risks Sherpas face

BBTF sets IDR5 trillion on transactions target

KATMANDU, Nepal — The rescuers moved quickly, minutes after the first block of ice tore loose from Mount Everest and started an avalanche that roared down the mountain, ripping through teams of guides hauling gear. But they couldn’t get there quickly enough. No one can move that fast. Not even the people who have spent their lives in Everest’s shadow, and who have spent years working on the world’s highest peak.

By Saturday evening, the bodies of 13 Sherpa guides had been taken from the mountain. Three more were missing, though few held out hope they were still alive, 36 hours after Friday’s avalanche. Four survivors had been flown to hospitals in Katmandu, Nepal’s capital, where they were in stable condition. It was the deadliest disaster ever on Mount Everest. For the Sherpas, the once-obscure mountain people whose name has become synonymous with Everest, and whose entire culture has been changed by decades of working as guides and porters for wealthy foreigners, it was a brutal reminder of the risks they face. Many gathered Saturday at the Boudha Monastery in Katmandu, where prayers were said for the dead. “The mountains are a death trap,” said Norbu Tshering, a 50-year-old Sherpa and mountain guide who now lives mostly in Katmandu. With his white hair and dark, wrinkled skin, he looked far older than his age. In hands roughened by years of tough work, he worked a string of Buddhist prayer beads. “But we have no other work, and most of our people take up this profession, which has now become a tradition for all of us,” he said.

The avalanche happened early Friday morning at about 5,800 meters (19,000 feet), as Sherpa guides were hauling gear through the Khumbu icefall, a treacherous terrain of crevasses and enormous chunks of ice. The men were near an area known to climbers as the “popcorn field,” because if its bulging ice, when an enormous piece broke away from a high glacier and came tumbling down the mountain, setting off an avalanche of ice, according to the website of International Mountain Guides, an Ashford, Washingtonbased company that had a team that witnessed the disaster. Nepalese tourism officials said the guides had been fixing ropes — using clamps and special screws to attach miles of nylon cord used by the streams of climbers who begin heading for the summit this time of year. But guiding companies said the ropes had already been laid down, and the Sherpas were carrying loads of tents, oxygen tanks and other gear to the higher camps used by climbers as they approach the summit. They were quickly called back after the avalanche to start building a new path, though climbing had been halted for at least a couple of days. International Mountain Guides said on its website that many climbers had been pleased by the icefall doctors’ work this year, since lines had been fixed in an area “that is normally not so

exposed to the frequent slides.” When the avalanche hit, dozens of climbers and guides raced from the base camp — the mini-city of nylon and prayer flags and nightly parties built every year for its hundreds of temporary residents — in search of survivors, said Prakash Adhikari of the Himalayan Rescue Association, which has a medical team at the camp.

But while the icefall is barely 500 meters (547 yards) higher than base camp, it can easily take a couple of hours to reach the popcorn field, even for the strongest climbers. It’s unclear whether any of the dead could have been saved, even with immediate rescue. Many probably died instantly, hit by blocks of ice that can easily be larger than a car.

Chairman of the BBTF organizing committee Ketut Ardana said the travel fair will attract sellers and potential buyers expected to generate transactions worth Rp3 trillion to Rp5 trillion during the event. “We invested funds amounting to IDR21.7 billion to organize this event,” he added. BBTF 2014 is the first travel fair applying business-tobusiness and business-to-consumer concepts. The fair’s theme is “Gateway to Indonesia’s Creative Tourism.” “This will serve as a forum where sellers from Indonesia’s tourism sector will meet domestic as well as foreign buyers from countries, such as Australia and China, as well as the ASEAN member nations, the Middle Eastern countries and the European nations,” he said. A business meeting organized on the sidelines of the fair will be attended by about 450 domestic sellers and 350 foreign buyers from 55 countries. BBTF is also expected to boost the number of tourist visiting eastern Indonesian region. “Through this event, we have designed Bali as a tourism window that encourages foreign tourists to visit other destinations existing in eastern Indonesia,” the tourism and creative economy ministry’s director general for tourism marketing, Esthy Reko Astuty. BBTF is organized for the first time this year and is expected to be held annually.

Some 600 people were involved in the clean-up program, which covered five kilometers along the coastline. “We are aware that such programs offer a small contribution to solving the entire environmental problem. GIANYAR - A total of 20 imported bonsai trees brought in from several countries and property of bonsai hobbyists were exhibited at Astina Square in Gianyar in conjunction with the 243rd anniversary of Gianyar town. “Dozens of bonsai trees on display include the type of Kimeng, Fir, Hokiyanti, Brazilian Orange and local variety,” explained Wayan Artana, a bonsai hobbyist, Friday (Apr 8). Hundreds of the bonsai trees on display were owned by hobbyists from Bali and some other regions outside Bali such as Bandung, Central Java and East Java. “The bonsai on display during the anniversary activity of Gianyar town belongs to rare trees specially maintained and preserved in the form of bonsai art,” he said. Hendra is now still undergoing investigation in the North Kuta Police. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

He was rushed to intensive care with fluid in his lungs after performing a three-hour concert Sunday at a resort on the Las Vegas Strip as part of his “Volver” tour. WASHINGTON — A judge has set Monday as the start date for the assault trial of singer Chris Brown in the nation’s capital. During a brief court appearance Friday in which he wore a suit and tie, Brown turned to wave and salute supporters in the courtroom including his mother and the rapper Bow Wow. The case that begins Monday is significant for the Grammy winner not only because he faces up to six months in jail but also because if convicted he could face additional penalties, including jail time, as a result of an earlier case from California. At the time he was arrested in Washington, Brown was on probation in Los Angeles for an attack on his thengirlfriend, the singer Rihanna, in 2009. Brown entered anger management rehab at a California facility shortly after his Washington arrest, but he was dismissed from it in mid-March for violating its rules. He was then jailed and has been in custody since. Besides giving Brown a trial date Friday, D.C. Superior Court Judge Pa-

tricia Wynn had been expected to rule in the assault trial of Brown’s bodyguard, Christopher Hollosy. But Wynn delayed giving her verdict, saying she needed more time before ruling. That is expected Monday, followed by the start of Brown’s trial. Both Brown and Hollosy are facing a misdemeanor assault charge in the same October skirmish in which a Maryland man accused them of punching him outside a Washington hotel.

Hollosy told police he punched 20year-old Parker Adams after the man tried to get on Brown’s tour bus. Adams told police a different story. He said Brown and later Hollosy punched him after he tried to get in a photo the singer was taking and the men exchanged words. Brown has denied hitting Adams. Hollosy did not testify at his own trial, which began Thursday and ended Friday, but he is expected to testify at Brown’s and say that he, not Brown, hit Adams.

JINDO - Divers began retrieving bodies Sunday from inside the submerged South Korean ferry that capsized four days ago with hundreds of children on board, as families angered by the pace of the rescue efforts scuffled with police.

Coastguard officials said 16 bodies had been removed from the ship which sank on Wednesday morning, pushing operations further along the painful transition from rescue to recovery and identification. The retrieval of the first bodies from the interior came after prosecutors revealed that the officer at the helm of the 6,825-tonne Sewol when it capsized was not familiar with those particular waters.

The confirmed death toll from the disaster stood at 56 with 246 people still unaccounted for. Three bodies were pulled out of the fully submerged ferry just before midnight and another 13 were recovered later Sunday morning, a coastguard spokesman said. The breakthrough followed days of fruitless efforts by more than 500 divers to access the capsized ship, while battling powerful currents and

near-zero visibility. It was a watershed moment for distraught relatives who have clung desperately to the idea that some passengers may have survived in air pockets in the upturned vessel. The bodies were placed in tents at the harbour on Jindo island -- not far from the disaster site -- where the relatives have been camped out in a gymnasium since the ferry went down. In a process that looks set to be repeated with tragic frequency in the coming days, they were checked for IDs and other particulars, after which their relatives were informed and asked to make an official identification.
