Garbage on Kuta beach not deterring tourists Antara DENPASAR - The garbage problem at Kuta beach which was reported by Time magazine recently has not affected the flow of international and domestic tourists to Bali Island, a local official said. “Looking at the number of tourist visits to Bali which is recorded at between 5,000 and 8,000 this month, we can say there has been no decrease compared to the previous month,” said Bali Province Tourism Office chief Ida Bagus Kade Subhiksu in
Denpasar. Subhiksu added that the report by Time magazine would actually not affect the number of tourist visits to Bali as long as all related institutions take action in cleaning up the garbage scattered at some locations on Kuta Beach.
Bali will remain the Island of Paradise should all the related institutions have the awareness to keep Bali clean, he said. On the possibility that garbage problems may impact on the image of Bali tourism, Subhiksu called on all elements of the government, public, the media and business circle to sit together and come to a common understanding that Bali is the primary icon of domestic and international tourism of the country. “We don’t blame the Time journalist who had written his article (on
Bali) that way because it might have been the fact when he came to see Kuta beach there was a lot of garbage at the place,” said Subhiksu. Subhiksu said there was a foreign lady who had also written about Bali who visited Kuta in July last year and reported Kuta as a clean destination because there was no garbage at the time. “Garbage usually floods into Kuta in the time of Monsoon seasons around the month of March every year,” Subhiksu said.

JAKARTA - Malaysian and Singaporean visitors dominated tourist arrivals in Indonesia in the first two months of 2011, a minister said. “Admittedly, the two countries remain the main market for the Indonesian tourism,” Culture and Tourism Minister Jero Wacik said.
Data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) show 88,146 Singaporean tourists visited Indonesia in February, a 8.17 percent increase compared to the same month last year when the figure was 81,081. Meanwhile, the number of Malaysian tourists visiting Indonesia in February 2011 rose 12.54 percent to 79,462 from 70,609 in Feb-
ruary 2010. “Until February the number of foreign tourists visiting Indonesia reached 1.116 million,” he said. Compared to the same period last year, the figure represented a 9.83 percent increase, he said. About 1.016 million tourists visited Indonesia in the first two months of last year. The government has set the target of tourist arrivals

Last year, the number of tourist arrivals in the country outstripped the government-set target of 7 million with their spending estimated at US$7.6 billion. New airport scheduled to be established in north Bali is considered very potential to attract at least 5 million foreign tourists to Bali. “Development of a new airport in Bali poses a shortcut breakthrough to promote the equitable distribution of tourism in Bali,” said Minister of Culture and Tourism Jero Wacik in Jakarta on Tuesday (Apr 19).

Preserving old houses in Singaraja Regency govt must have long-term program Out of some 50 old houses remaining to exist in Singaraja City, almost all of them belong to historic buildings whose historical value can still be described easily. Residential house of Gusti Bagus Oka is now maintained by his son, Wiradharma Bagus Oka, who is now an operator of a flight school at the Lieutenant Colonel Wisnu Airport, Gerokgak. Gusti Bagus Oka himself was a resident in the Lesser Sunda administrative government in October 1958 and was appointed Acting Regional Head of Bali. At that time, it was held the transitional period to implement the Law No.164/1958 concerning with the establishment of Bali Region as an autonomous provincial region along with the formation of eight regencies in Bali, West Nusa Tenggara as well as East Nusa Tenggara. According to Wacik, investors from India had agreed to build two airports in Indonesia, namely in Bantul, Yogyakarta and North Bali. “We have 30 engineers working to conduct the survey at the point where the North Bali airport will be built because there are 1,000 hectares of land and they look for the safest spot where to be built the airport,” he said.The survey took place about three months and would be continued with land acquisition when location had been determined at the most appropriate location. “I am targeting that in 2014, Bali will have an airport in the north region,” he said. But someday the time might change and so might their confidence. When government did not pay serious attention to conservation efforts, homeowners could also think of dismantling them and create a new building having an economic value. “In the long run, people could be tempted. My house was just continually bargained at expensive price,” he said. Wiradharma suggested the Buleleng Regency Government to immediately formulate a longterm program, including the regulations to preserve those old houses. It should not make shortterm programs that could only destroy the long historical journey. “Government apparently is not willing to make a long-term program because the result will be enjoyed by the next elected regent. Another Buleleng resident became a victim to rabies with this time a 6th grade elementary pupil named Putu Edo Surya Wiranata (12) from Banjar Baingin, Dencarik Village, Banjar after treated at Buleleng Hospital As information received last Tuesday (19/4), it is stated the boy died on 13th April and planned to be buried this Wednesday (20/4). The boy died after having rabies symptoms and was brought also treated at Santi Graha Hospital, Seririt before sent to Buleleng Hospital where he died several hours later. Father of the boy, Putu Astrawan (35), stated his first son was bitten last December 2010 on his left food when walking home in the street near to their house. Director of Singaraja Hospital, dr. I Nyoman Mardana, Sp. B, stated that the hospital is still waiting for the results of if the boy positively died due to rabies. “It is true he was indicated to have the rabies virus but for further clarity we are still waiting for the blood sample test in the laboratorium,” he explained. Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

PERTH, Australia – A teacher at an Australian school has been suspended after allegedly tying a five-year-old boy to a chair with a skipping rope as punishment for misbehaving, a report said Wednesday. Police told the West Australian newspaper they received a report from a school east of Perth that a female teacher used the rope to restrain the child on two occasions. She allegedly tied his hands behind his back for about one minute before releasing him and when he continued being disruptive, she reportedly roped him to a chair in the corner of the classroom for about five minutes. The newspaper said another member of staff witnessed the incidents and informed police, who have asked the Education Depart-
ment to investigate. The department said the teacher had been suspended while their Standards and Integrity Unit conduct a probe. Western Australia’s director general of education, Sharyn O’Neil, told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation she was disappointed to hear of the incident. “Teachers are in a special position of trust, and so this allegation is particularly disappointing,” she said. “Parents should be able to send their children to school and understand that those children are going to be looked after and looked after well. “If the allegation is proven, it will be taken most seriously.” Last year, a teacher in the Western Australian town of Kalgoorlie was disciplined for sticky-taping the mouths of nine young children to stop them talking in class.

The moment — captured by a photographer from leading Japanese daily Yomiuri and published by newspapers and websites worldwide — evoked a rare glimmer of hope amid so much destruction and death from the March 11 disasters that killed an estimated 26,000 people. Weeks later, 5-month-old Iroha Ishikawa is now healthy and safe, living at a shelter inside an elementary school with her parents in Ishinomaki, 200 miles (320 kilometers) northeast of Tokyo. “I’m happy that we were rescued, but there is a lot of sadness behind it — many families didn’t make it,” the infant’s mother, Yuki Ishikawa, tells The Associated Press. A minute later the tsunami crashed through the first floor. “We saw all kinds of things get washed by in the waters — debris, cars, and to be honest, bodies,” she says. “We stayed there for two days with nothing to eat or drink, except for what the baby had.” Two days after the tsunami, the waters receded, and the two men were able to scrounge some food. The group of five was located by soldiers, who asked them to move to a crowded shelter closer to the shore. They declined, and then a powerful aftershock sent everyone scrambling
for safety. The troops returned the next day. “The doors of the house were blocked by cars and other debris, so we had to go out through a window. The soldiers helped us out through the window, and that was when the picture was taken,” Yuki Ishikawa says. Since then, the Ishikawas have been living in the elementary school, with father Takatoshi so busy fixing pipes at damaged buildings that he has had little time to clean up their own home. The mother says she can’t really think very far into the future, but she hopes they can move to temporary housing or somewhere with more privacy. As for the widely viewed photo, she says it is such a positive image that it masks some of the tragedy of the tsunami. “I don’t really have any feelings about the picture itself,” Iroha’s mother says. “I just want people to know the reality of what happened here.”

Police are still investigating his motives and links with terror groups. The attack was the first suicide bombing inside a mosque in the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation of 240 million people. Last month, bombs hidden in hollowed-out books were sent to several addresses including those of liberal Muslim figures and a counterterrorism official, but no one was killed. Indonesia has been rocked by a series of bombings staged by JI in recent years, including the 2002 Bali bombings which killed 202 people.

JAKARTA - In the past forty years Toyota has developed Indonesia into a strong production base for the domestic and export markets. “From 1987 to last year, Toyota has been exporting around 225,382 thousand CBU (completely built up) cars, exported 561 thousand cars in CKD (completely knocked down), 1.4 million engines, and 200 million parts from Indonesia,” PT Toyota Astra Motor (TAM) President Director Johnny Darmawan said here Tuesday (April 19). He said that in 1987 Toyota has been exporting multipurpose vehicles Kijang to the Philippines and Fiji. Toyota’s exports later included other products such as MPV low Avanza and SUV Fortuner, in addition to Innova. “We continue trying to develop Indonesia into a strong production base, because Indonesia is very attractive with a large market. But we need government support especially for infrastructure, good roads, electricity, ports, and reliable human resources,” he said. Johnny estimated that since April 12, 1971 Toyota has invested billions of dollars, where one factory could have invested upto 150 million U.S. dollars. Currently, Toyota has several factories in Indonesia and has invested in its
subsidiary company Daihatsu. He said that in the next two years the car market is expected to reach one million units a year. “Domestic car sales in the January-March period have reached 225 thousand units, and multiplied by four it might break the 800 thousand unit car sale and in the next two years Indonesian car market could reach one million units, “he said. Currently Toyota and Daihatsu has become a major production base in Indonesia. Toyota has a production capacity of over 100 thousand units, and Daihatsu is also producing collaboration products of Toyota Avanza and Rush, has a production capacity of up to 400 thousand units per year. “Last year, Toyota’s sales reached more than 280 thousand units of which 90 percent came from products manufactured in the country, and only 10 percent imported,” said Johnny. He said it indicated a strong market control of the cars produced in the country. This year, Toyota continued to maintain its target car market control in Indonesia by 36 percent. In the January-March period Toyota had sold 85,494 units or an increase of 24.1 percent compared last year’s o 68,890 units. In the first quarter of 2011 Toyota leads with a market share of 37.9 of the total national sales of 225,413 units.
MP urges government to review ACFTA Antara
JAKARTA - A lawmaker has urged the government to immediately review ASEAN-China Free Trade Agreement (ACFTA) which he said has put local producers under a threat of bankruptcy due to a glut of cheaper Chinese products to the domestic market. “If the accord is continued, the national industry will collapse. It is a matter of time for them to go bankrupt,” Deputy Chairman of the House Commission VI Nurdin Tampubolon said here on Tuesday. To prevent the accord from hurting further the national industry, the government must try hard to renegotiate it. Otherwise, the national industry would collapse, he said. Nurdin said Industry Minister Mohammad S Hidayat himself had admitted that the government had no grand design to face ACFTA. On the other hand, the domestic market had been under pressure due to a glut of cheaper Chinese products. What was most likely for the government to deal with the matter other than renegotiating the accord was improving the competitive edge of national products. But this was not an easy job because the government had to improve various regu-
lations, scrap illegal levies, cut lending rates, and control imported goods, among others, he said. Right now the implementation of ACFTA had begun to hurt the national industry and affect products in regions, he said. “I have just arrived from a working visit in Maluku where I found imported goods including fish were sold there. As a matter of fact, we are a maritime state.” Asked why the government had no grand design to face the accord which had been put into force for more than one year now, he said the trade minister must be held responsible for the matter because she was unable to renegotiate it. “Since the beginning the government in this case the trade ministry should have looked at the aim of the accord (carefully). Will we cause misery to our people? Don’t do that,” he said. ACFTA was signed in 2004 but only fully implemented on January 1, 2010. Trade Ministry data show that Indonesia export to China was valued at US$15.7 billion last year compared to US$11.5 billion in 2009. Imports from China in 2010 was US$20.4 billion, a 31 percent increase compared to US$14 billion in 2009.

People reading Balinese manuscripts known as lontar occasionally find slight difficulties especially in the matter of lexicons. This happens because the manuscripts often use synonyms and they do not belong to common words. Nevertheless, such difficulty may not become a hindrance to learn the ancient heritages being rich in knowledge. There is always a solution to resolve the problem. As other languages, Balinese language also has thesaurus known as Dasa Nama. One of the books carrying about it is a simple 67page book written by I Made Gambar who deeply involves in Balinese ancient manuscripts. Based on lexicons obtained from several lontars he successfully classified the field into six categories such as name of birds, name of trees, things or animals, homograph, Old Javanese and ingredients of ritual. As a matter of fact, the book resembles to a thesaurus, though not arranged alphabetically. It is a BalineseBalinese word equivalence that does not give the meaning with explanation. Uniquely, it tends to provide equivalent meaning belonging to uncommon vocabularies usually found in vernacular language. For readers who would like to learn more about Balinese herbal, this thesaurus will be very helpful. In addition, it can enrich the Balinese vocabulary. For instance, in Balinese herbal manuscript, there is a word lenge (red rice). It is not common to daily Balinese language that usually uses baas barak. Secondly, equivalences of hibiscus
(pucuk—common word) are wirakusuma, landa para, sumara, jakusuma, tundapala, raktajuma, warangbang, waribang, wangewarih and jaya kesuma. Other than thesaurus, it also carries homograph. For example, the word antara can have English equivalence to the words (1) leak, (2) good, (3) smart, (4) sky, (5) soul, and (6) intermediate. The word antara is often found used as word formation in making Balinese individual names like Budiantara and Sujaantara. Hopefully, this book could help young generation or whoever wishing to learn more about Balinese ancient manuscripts. They actually cover many aspects of life ranging from herbal healing (Taru Pramana, Rukmini Tattwa etc.), architecture (Asta Kosala Kosali), agriculture (Shri Tattwa/Darmaning Pemaculan), astrology (Wariga Dewasa), afterlife (Atma Prasangsa), medical code of ethic (Usada Kalimosada) and many more. As the treasure of indigenous wisdom, the lontar manuscripts have provided rich inspirations to spa treatment especially in terms of boreh ingredients, Balinese massage as well as elegant design to villa and hotel properties. By learning more ancient manuscripts, it will be obtained more and more inspirations and if combined with modern science and technique will engender unique and elegant products. Mountaineering In Bali, the mountains have a special significance in the Hindu Philosophy. To the Balinese the mountains are holy or sacred areas and for this reason many temples and shrines will be found among the lofty peaks. Certain curtiousies should be followed by all mountain walkers which to the outsider may appear odd or strange. For example woman should not visit mountain regions during their menstrual cycle, beef, in the form of meat should not be eaten or carried there. Also whilst in the mountain, bad language or behavior must be avoided. The mountains of Bali form part of a chain stretching from East to West and two of these mountains are in fact active volcanos. One being Mount Agung (2152 m) the highest mountain in Bali which last erupted in 1963, the other Mount Batur (1717 m) currently active. There are three other lesser mountains mount Abang (2152 m), Mount Batuaru (2276 m) and Mount lempuyang (1058 m), and several other mountains, but many f these can be “climbed” by motor cycles or cars. Mountain climbing in Bali is something much closer to mountain walking since most of Blai’s mountains have gentle slopes with few difficult or steep climbs, so the equipment required is minimal. Recommended climbing gear being a hat, for sun/rain protection, stout boots, gloves (ther are many thorn bushes and plants), warm clothing, rain coat and rucksack. It is also advisable to take along a small first aid kit. Many of the mountain foot hills have quite a number of leeches in particular Mount Batukaru so it is recommended to take along cigarettes (to burn the leeches off) and to tuck your trousers into your socks. There is in Bali an active students mountaineering clubs in Bali. Every Universities in Bali has their own club, one of them “Mapala Wanaprastha Dharma” situated in the campus of the Udayana University on Jalan P.B Sudirman Denpasar. Moreover, he got information on the matter from the Head of Bali Food Crops, Made Putra Suryawan, a few days ago who made a visit on the existence of caterpillar population at Biok Hamlet, Tumbu Village, Karangasem. Putra Suryawan mentioned if the golden silkworm could have been cultivated up to dozens of hectares in Java such as Yogyakarta. Its golden yellowish cocoon could be spun into gold silk thread. Additionally, the cocoon could also be directly made into accessories such as the quite expensive decorative hair clips. Gold silk worm has been found in Karangasem since last week and some already formed a cocoon. The hanging cocoon has produced threads being discharged from its anus and then braided to make chrysalis house. Place ground ingredients in heavy sauce pan, add all remaining ingredients and cook over medium heat for approximately 60 minutes or until all water is evaporated and marinade changes to golden color. Set aside and cool.

Reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes, until coconut milk breaks apart and sauce becomes oily and clear rather than creamy. Pour the sauce over the fried fish and serve.

LONDON – Upbeat earnings from companies including chip maker Intel lifted stocks and boosted appetite for riskier assets on Wednesday, driving commodities higher and the Australian dollar to a 29-year high versus the dollar. BEIJING – Opaque bidding laws, outright favoritism and other practices by China effectively bar foreign companies from winning public procurement contracts, a market equal to a fifth of the Chinese economy, a European business group said Wednesday. A study by the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China adds to rising complaints from major trading partners that foreign companies are being treated unfairly in the huge and rapidly growing Chinese market. Public procurement is particularly important because government agencies play a major role in the economy, both as funders and arbiters of bids, the EU Chamber said. In bidding on public contracts, “at every step of the process, you have flaws and difficulties and room for a non-equal playing field,” chamber president Jacques de Boisseson said at a news conference. A European information technology executive cited in the study said the bidding process “can seem like pure protectionism and it’s really frustrating.” Even after three decades of freemarket reforms, the government and state-owned companies dominate vital parts of China’s economy. The EU Chamber’s study takes an expansive view of the state involvement, defining public procurement as encapsulating everything from
infrastructure projects to some purchases by state companies and public institutions. By that measure, the study estimates that China’s public procurement totals $1 trillion, or 6.8 trillion yuan, a year — about 20 percent of the total economy. In trying to win public contracts, foreign companies often have difficulty getting information on bid requirements, the study said, while practices outlined in laws and regulations are implemented unevenly, often to the favor of local firms. Public procurement has become one of several prominent irritants in China’s relations with trading partners in recent years as the size of the Chinese market soared while developed economies tottered. The authoritarian government has used potential access to the growing market as leverage, crafting policies to persuade multinational companies to turn over technology and open up more factories and research facilities. Preferences given to domestic companies through government procurement and policies have drawn complaints from major multinationals and the U.S., Japanese and European governments. Washington filed a case in the World Trade Organization last year challenging subsidies China gives clean-energy makers that the complaint says allows them to sell solar and wind power equipment at unfairly low prices.

TOKYO – Japan’s exports fell for the first time in 16 months and the trade surplus plunged after a record earthquake and tsunami hit production, the finance ministry said Wednesday. The country may fall into a trade deficit in the near term amid rising prices of oil and raw materials, which inflated the value of March imports and ate into the trade balance, analysts said. The latest data further illustrate the emerging impact of the March 11 disasters, in which a 9.0-magnitude earthquake and the tsunami it unleashed devastated swathes of the northeast coast and triggered an atomic emergency. Economists see Japan sliding into a temporary recession after the devastation to infrastructure and manufacturing facilities in the northeast, amid the nation’s worst crisis since World War II. “If Japan posts a trade deficit in April and May, GDP is also likely to contract in the April-June period,” said Akiyoshi Takumori, chief economist at Sumitomo Mitsui Asset Management. Japan’s trade surplus in March reached 196.5 billion yen ($2.37 billion), down 78.9 percent but still managing to stay in the black for the second straight month, the finance ministry said. Exports in March dropped 2.2
percent to 5.87 trillion yen, falling for the first time in 16 months due to reduced shipments of automobiles, it said. This compared with a 2.0 percent decline expected in a joint poll by Dow Jones and the Nikkei financial daily. The fall was led by vehicle exports, which contracted 27.8 percent, the ministry said, after Japan’s leading automakers were forced to halt production amid broken supply chains and power shortages. The export fall is likely to continue, said Japan Foreign Trade Council chairman Shoei Utsuda, also a chairman for major trading house Mitsui & Co. “I cannot help but think the fall in April might be even sharper,” he told Japanese reporters, calling the rate of the fall in March “unprecedented”. The yen came under pressure in Asia on Wednesday after the trade data, weakening to 82.90 against the dollar from 82.57 yen in New York late Tuesday. “As the data showed a clear picture of sluggish exports, the market moved to dollar buying against the yen,” said Sumino Kamei, senior analyst at the Bank of TokyoMitsubishi UFJ. “The data revealed a steep decline in automobile exports. As the supply chain damaged by the quake has not been restored yet, it is seen to take time until automobile exports

March Japanese imports rose for the 15th straight month, increasing 11.9 percent to 5.67 trillion yen, on surging prices of oil and iron ore, the ministry said. The value of oil imports rose 14.8 percent. The value of iron ore imports soared 74.9 percent. Coal imports also rose 39.4 percent. Procurement of manufacturing parts from overseas also boosted imports, analysts said. The disaster has depressed Japan’s business and consumer confidence, as Tokyo Electric Power Co, which operates the stricken Fukushima nuclear plant, makes slow progress to stop the world’s worst atomic disaster since the 1986 Chernobyl explosion. The ministry also said Japanese exports for the year to March rose 14.9 percent to 67.8 trillion yen, while imports rose 15.9 percent to 62.4 trillion. Mary Robbins dies just 12 days after husband Associated Press Writer
LOS ANGELES – Actor-director Tim Robbins’ mother, musician Mary Robbins, has died. She was 78. Robbins’ father, Gil Robbins, died earlier this month. Robbins says his mother died Sunday of a heart arrhythmia, just 12 days after her husband of nearly 59 years passed away. She died at the couple’s home in Esteban Cantu, Mexico. Mary Robbins studied music at the University of California, Los Angeles, and performed professionally in the 1950s. She successfully battled colon cancer through nutrition and alternative medicine, eventually earning a bachelor’s degree in holistic nutrition. She volunteered her services at a clinic near the couple’s Mexico home. SEOUL – Shin Kyung-Sook took South Koreans by storm with “Please Look After Mom”, her poignant novel of family love which sold 1.7 million copies domestically. Now it is going international. The book sold more than 100,000 copies in the United States just a few days after its debut and there are plans to publish in 24 countries in total. The novel ranks 21st on the upcoming New York Times best-seller list for hardcover fiction, based on sales between April 3 to 9. It’s the first time a Korean novel has made it on the list, according to Shin’s agent Lee Ku-Yong, president of KL Management. Shin, 48, is one of South Korea’s most acclaimed novelists but “Please Look After Mom” is her first book to appear in English. Now she hopes
she’s set a globalising trend for other Korean writers. “I am getting all these congratulatory messages but it (the success) doesn’t feel so real yet,” she told AFP in a phone interview from the United States. “But, if I think about it, it’s marvellous and I feel like I have achieved something new in a different world.” The book tells the story of an elderly, disorientated and illiterate mother from the countryside who gets separated from her husband at Seoul’s busy train station and goes missing. Her grown-up children distribute fliers and search the city for her, racked with guilt that none of them went to the station to meet their parents. The story is told from the different perspectives of the husband, the children and the mother herself. Shin attributes her US success
partly to its universal theme and partly to the meticulous translation by Chi-Young Kim. “I tried to understand and analyse the mother as another human being, the same as all of us, and to portray the burden everyone might have as being a mother to someone else,” she said. “Everyone has a mother, and their mothers have mothers, so I think the sentiment and symbolic meaning behind the mother-figure was commonly shared.” Shin, who is currently on tour to promote her book in the United States, said great effort went into the translation. “Rather than simplifying Korean backgrounds and words for the sake of foreign readers, my translator, Knopf (the US publisher) and I worked on translating everything word by word,” she said. “Overall, I am very satisfied with the English version.”

YULI, Taiwan – When he was young, Taiwanese aboriginal hunter Lin Yuan-yuan became a legend after he killed two ferocious Formosan black bears. Now he has devoted his life to saving the endangered species. The 55-year-old is still revered by his tribe, the Bunun mountain people, as a guardian of the island’s biggest land animal as it struggles to survive poaching and continued degradation of its traditional habitat. “When I see an animal, I no longer want to shoot it. I want to film it,” Lin said. “I feel happy every time I’m in the mountains,” he added, caressing the camera he uses to capture images of animals he encounters in Yushan National Park, one of the bears’ two major natural habitats in Taiwan.
Now a ranger, Lin is in a fourmember team that patrols the park regularly, covering 40 percent of its 105,000 hectares (260,000 acres) on foot every month. The transformation into a government employee has not been easy for a person who was born into an aboriginal family and taught hunting skills from early
childhood. Lin, better known to his Bunun people by the name of Ison, killed his first bear on a winter day when he was just 19 years old. “I saw two animals in the woods,” he said, remembering the incident in the eastern Taiwan mountains that made him a local hero 36 years ago. “At first, I thought they were wild boars. So I fired at one of them and only then did I realise they were actually bears.” The bear, a male of about 70 kilograms (154 pounds), was only 15 metres away from him, roaring with pain for about a minute before collapsing on the ground, he said.
WASHINGTON – Genome-sequencing is getting cheaper and faster, and can eliminate the guesswork in treating cancer by offering personalized clues on how to best attack tumors, US doctors said on Tuesday. The human genome was first sequenced in 2003, followed by the first cancer tumor in 2008, intriguing doctors with a new and unparalleled potential for targeting care. However, controversy lingers over the ethical questions that arise as people begin to learn more about their genetic maps, from concerns over medical privacy to decisions about childbearing and scanning offspring for genetic flaws. Two studies in the Journal of the American Medical Association detail how one patient’s genome led doctors to a different, life-saving leukemia treatment, while a second patient died but left her three children with potentially valuable information about their genetic future. The study authors said these cases offer hope that as technology gets cheaper and researchers build up more
data about cancer and its various mutations, the oncology field will be transformed in the next five to 10 years. What used to cost tens of millions of dollars and took months, now costs about $40,000 and can offer detailed results in about six weeks, said senior author Richard Wilson, director of Washington University’s Genome Institute. “It has been very eye opening for me in the 10 years that I have been working on cancer genomics,” Wilson told AFP. “We think about leukemia or lung cancer or breast cancer as all sort of being the same disease across all patients, but that’s really not the way it is,” he said. “It is a complex genetic disease... for the great majority of the cases you are going to want to know exactly what is going on in the genome to cause the disease in order to effectively treat it.” One study centered on a 39year-old woman who appeared to have classic case of acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL), but lacked the usual genetic signs associated with it.

LONDON – Celtic Football Club manager Neil Lennon and two other well-known fans have been targeted by “viable” parcel bombs designed to “kill or maim”, Scottish police have said. The package addressed to Lennon was thought to be a hoax when found at a sorting office on March 26, but Strathclyde Police said on Tuesday that they would be launching an investigation after it was found to be “designed to cause harm”. Police said they did not believe the bombs were linked to terrorist organisations. The two other targets were Scottish Labour politician Trish Godman and lawyer Paul McBride, who has previously represented Lennon. “They were viable devices designed to cause harm,” a police spokesman said. “We are treating the matter very seriously.” The package destined for Lennon was found at the Royal Mail sorting office in Kirkintilloch, East Dunbartonshire. Godman’s parcel was intercepted at her constituency office on March 28 while the package sent to McBride was discovered on April 15. Lennon has been on the receiving end of sectarian threats throughout his playing and managerial career.
NEWCASTLE – Manchester United failed to score at St.James’ Park for the first time in 11 seasons as a goalless draw with Newcastle United kept alive the race for the Barclays Premier League title. The Red Devils had the chance to move nine points clear of second-placed Arsenal with victory over Alan Pardew’s mid-table side. But, with Sir Alex Ferguson serving the penultimate game of his five-match touchline ban, the visitors failed to bounce back from the disappointment of their weekend FA Cup semi-final defeat against rivals Manchester City. Wayne Rooney was back from his two-match suspension for swearing down the lens of a TV camera, but it was another frustrating night for the England forward. Kick off was delayed for a few seconds as Rooney’s strike partner, Javier Hernandez, knelt on the halfway-line and completed his pre-match prayer routine. If the Mexican was praying for an early chance then he certainly got his wish. After just 90 seconds Rooney broke down the left wing and delivered for what looked like a routine tap-in for Hernandez. But Dutch goalkeeper Tim Krul, in for the injured Steve Harper, read the unfolding danger and slid from his goal-line to smother at the feet of the frontman, much to the relief of the home crowd. That relief, though, soon turned to excite-
ment as the black and whites enjoyed a prolonged spell of attacking pressure. First, Jonas Gutierrez danced by three red shirts before seeing a measured curler from 20 yards deflected wide off Nemanja Vidic. Then, Shola Ameobi, stretching at the far post to connect with Joey Barton’s deep centre, could only turn into the hands of Edwin Van Der Sar, and Cheik Tiote smashed into those same gloves with a 25yard drive just seconds later as the Magpies produced a pulsating spell. It wasn’t the start the league leaders had planned but they soon began to settle and Rooney broke free of marker Mike Williamson on the edge of the area only to lift his shot over both Krul and the crossbar on 19 minutes. That frenetic opening gave way to a game of defensive containment, but it was Newcastle who finished the half the stronger of the sides. Skipper Barton saw a 41st-minute free-kick snaffled by Van Der Sar just inside his near
post before Peter Lovenkrands headed wide when unmarked just eight yards out. The second period began in much the same vein as the first and Ryan Giggs, like Lovenkrands just before the break, should have done better when heading wide of goal from an identical, closerange position. Newcastle were being implored forward by a vociferous home support and Lovenkrands saw a penalty appeal waved away just before the hour mark when he tumbled under the clumsy challenge of Anderson. Stephen Ireland’s last appearance at St.James’ was his debut for Aston Villa back in August, United the 6-0 winners that day. The 24-year-old, on loan at Newcastle from Villa, was on the touchline waiting to come on for his bow when Giggs missed the game’s best chance, Patrice Evra sliding a left-wing cross into his path only for the former Wales international to scuff woefully wide from 10 yards.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – At least one Woods is a winner this year. Tiger Woods’ title slump certainly hasn’t extended to his niece Cheyenne. After winning the Atlantic Coast Conference individual golf title, the Wake Forest junior wants to keep establishing her own identity during the upcoming NCAA regionals. Cheynne Woods said Tuesday that maturing in the shadow of her famous uncle has been a positive because it has “definitely gotten my name out there.” She says dealing with the spotlight that comes with her lineage has made her better at dealing with the spotlight — essential in an individual sport like golf. She was under par for all three rounds at the par-71 Sedgefield Country Club, shooting a 5-under 208 to win the ACC championship by seven strokes.

Although a number of drivers had been sceptical about the DRS before the first race of the campaign - fearing it would either make overtaking too easy or not even help at all – the way it has panned out in the first three races of the campaign has been encouraging. And Rosberg, who has both lost and gained position through the DRS, has gone so far as to reckon its introduction alongside the new Pirelli era can be singled out as the greatest regulation that F1 has seen. Speaking exclusively to AUTOSPORT, Rosberg said: “F1 has done a brilliant job. How exciting have the races been? They have been stunning. “There is nobody saying we are having boring races. There is overtaking left, right, and centre - everywhere. So, they have done a really, really good job and that is the most important thing that needs to be highlighted. “The people in charge have made the sport from one year to the next so much more exciting, and that is awesome for the fans and everything. It is really cool, isn’t it? It is the tyres and the rear wing. “The rear wing – best idea ever probably, for this sport. No? And tyres also. Pirelli, everybody has been
criticising them, but they have made our sport spectacular. So that is cool.” Despite Rosberg’s enthusiasm for the regulation, Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali thinks it will take a bit more time to work out if the DRS is a certain success. “We’ve seen three different situations in three different races, so we need to wait more to find out what is the right balance,” explained the Italian. “In my view, and this is a personal view, you see the activation point of the DRS has a different effect if you are at the beginning of the race or the end of the race, depending on the tyres that you have. “So it is a tyre effect, not related to the speed or that you are behind. It is the way the tyres behave, so we need to see what is the best solution in that respect. We saw Australia, Malaysia and China were different, but the main reason in China for overtaking was that the tyres were so different you could overtake.” As well as drivers using the DRS to overtake at the designated zone, one consequence of the straightline speed boost is that it is helping cars stay closer to each other for more of a lap - further increasing the chances of overtaking elsewhere.
