‘Divergent’ doesn’t diverge quite enough

If you have a kid of a certain age — especially a girl, preteen or thereabouts — then you know the young-adult entertainment message of choice these days: You’re you, and nobody else. Don’t let them define you. Don’t let them put you into one of their neat little slots. You’re unique. And you’re gonna show the world. You go, girl! So it’s no surprise that this is the message of “Divergent,” the latest young adult blockbuster-in-waiting. It’s also no surprise that the emerging young star Shailene Woodley delivers a crucial dose of humility, sensitivity and intelligence in this showcase role. And it’s no surprise, either, that she generates nice chemistry with her rather absurdly good-looking co-star, Theo James. What IS surprising is that with all these promising elements, “Divergent,” the first of three installments based on first-time author Veronica Roth’s trilogy, ultimately feels so lackluster. For a film predicated on the principle that being different — or “divergent” — is what makes you special, “Divergent” just doesn’t diverge enough from the pack. Not that this will hurt the film’s chances at the box office. Like “The Hunger Games,” the franchise to which it will
unavoidably be compared, “Divergent” has a ready-made audience of fans just waiting to fill those seats — over 11 million books have been sold, after all. Those book fans will have a crucial head start. “Divergent” takes a good deal of time explaining plot mechanics, but If you already know what’s happening, you can spend more time admiring, say, those cheekbones on James — or his day-old, dystopian stubble. In a nutshell, “Divergent,” directed by Neil Burger, takes place in a futuristic Chicago, a bleak version indeed of the Windy City. Half of every building seems to be destroyed, leaving hulking shells. Civilization is divided into five factions, based on human virtues: Dauntless, Abnegation, Erudite, Amity, and Candor. Beatrice Prior (Woodley) is born into Abnegation. But at age 16, a citizen can choose their own faction, at the Choos-

caust survivors around the world. As the organization turns 20, it has expanded its mission to include interviews with survivors of other genocides, including those in Armenia, Cambodia and Rwanda. Spielberg was inspired to create the foundation after meeting so many Holocaust survivors while making “Schindler’s List,” which tells the story of a German businessman who used his Nazi ties to rescue 1,100 Jews from the Holo-
ing Ceremony. Right before, they take an aptitude test that tells them which faction they fit best. Beatrice’s results are downright scary: She has not one virtue, but all of them. She is “divergent” — which makes her dangerous. To the distress of her parents (Ashley Judd and Tony Goldwyn), Beatrice opts to join Dauntless, the most courageous faction, but also the most reckless: Pierced and tattooed, they look like unusually fit punk rockers. Soon she’s in boot camp, jumping on and off trains (trains never seem to actually stop in this movie) and into pits, and fighting viciously in the ring, under the guidance of the initially unforgiving Four (James), her trainer. Gradually, Beatrice — she’s renamed herself “Tris” — becomes buff and strong. But will it be enough to survive? On top of all this, there’s a political storm brewing, led by the villainess Jeanine Matthews, played by a blonde and stiletto-clad Kate Winslet in one of her less convincing performances (in a sadly under-written role.) Matthews is the leader of Erudite, which means she’s got a killer IQ along with those killer heels, and she’s convinced that Divergents are a threat to her plan to overthrow Abnegation.
Spielberg’s Shoah Foundation expands, turns 20
LOS ANGELES — Steven Spielberg isn’t planning on making any more Holocaust movies. The Oscar-winning director is leaving that to the Shoah Foundation. After “Schindler’s List,” Spielberg turned his lens on real survivors of the World War II Jewish genocide through his foundation, which has since filmed nearly 52,000 testimonies from Holo-
caust. The film’s greatest legacy isn’t its seven Oscars, $300 million in worldwide box office or even its message of humanity, says the 67-year-old, but the ongoing work of the Shoah Foundation. “It literally popped into my head on the drive back to my house in Krakow after a day of shooting the film that if ‘Schindler’s List’ had any success at all, the success would not be a monetary, commercial one, but the success would be that this film would open a door for me to start taking as many testimonies as humanly possible,” Spielberg said in a telephone interview Monday on behalf of the organization, now known as USC Shoah Foundation — The Institute for Visual History and Education. CANBERRA - Australia said Thursday that two objects -- one estimated at 24 metres (79 feet) long -- had been spotted in the Indian Ocean, the “best lead we have” in the search for a Malaysian passenger jet. Four search aircraft had been dispatched to the remote area of the southern Indian Ocean to check whether grainy satellite photos indicated debris from missing Malaysia Airlines MH370, as relatives of passengers huddled anxiously awaiting news. Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott told parliament the images represented “new and credible information” but stressed that the link with flight MH370 had still to be confirmed. “Following specialist analysis of this satellite imagery, two possible objects related to the search have been identified,” Abbott said. The Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777, carrying 227 passengers and 12 crew, vanished in the early hours of March 8 after veering drastically off course over the South China Sea while en route to Beijing. The reason for the deviation remains unknown although investigators believe it was the result of “deliberate action” by someone on board. Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) official John Young said the largest object sighted was assessed as being 24 metres long. The two objects were in the southern Indian Ocean, about 2,500 kilometres (1,553 miles) southwest of Perth. “The indication to me is of objects that are of a reasonable size and probably awash with water and bobbing up and down over the surface,” Young said, calling it, “the best lead we have right now”. “But we need to get there, find them, see them, assess them, to know whether it’s really meaningful or not.” A merchant ship was expected to arrive in the vicinity around 0700 GMT and the Australian naval vessel HMAS Success, which is capable of retrieving any debris, is some days away. Abbott warned that it may turn out the objects “are not related to the search for flight MH370”. The international search for the plane has been marked by numerous false leads, but the latest photos are the first solid clue since the search area was significantly expanded last weekend to take in a vast part of the Indian Ocean. The expansion, based on sketchy radar and satellite data, involved two vast search corridors, stretching south into the Indian Ocean and north over South and Central Asia. Most analysts had favoured the southern corridor, saying it was unlikely the airliner passed undetected over nearly one dozen countries in the northern arc.

Sanglah Hospital treats another suspect of MERS CoV Bali Post
DENPASAR - After caring for a patient of MERS CoV suspect from Arab who then died not long time ago, Sanglah Hospital got another suspect patient. The patient is a Denpasar resident who was then referred to Sanglah Hospital around 11:30 p.m., Tuesday (Mar 18).
The Head of Bali Health Agency, Ketut Suarjaya, confirmed the MERS CoV suspect patient caused by corona virus. “The patient is a woman of 72 years old. She has a history of traveling to Saudi Arabia for pilgrimage purposes and previously was suffering the symptoms of cough and heat,” said Suarjaya. The patient just arrived home from umrah pilgrimage, Saturday (Mar 15) and she then got cough and heat, Monday (Mar 17). After that, the patient came to a specialist and from the results of X-rays was found pneumonia. Considering the background of patient coming home from the Middle East and based on standard operating procedures (SOP), the patient was directly referred to Sanglah Hospital for treatment and examination to ascertain whether the patient was positively or negatively suffering MERS CoV. According to Suarjaya, the Bali Health Agency had assigned a surveillance team to the field to ascertain whether there was possibility for the case of new suspect. “We’ve assigned a team to the residential environment of the
patient to check the possibility of new case,” said Suarjaya. Meanwhile, Spokesperson of Sanglah Hospital, Kadek Nariyantha, explained that condition of patient until Wednesday (Mar 19) was stable. She was treated in Nusa Indah Room for taking the sample and examination. “The samples were taken on Wednesday morning and the CVR was sent to the Health Research and Development,” he said. For further results, added Nariyantha, his party still had to wait until the results were issued, while the patient was being treated in Nusa Indah Room. As had been known, some time ago a suspect patient of MERS-CoV from Arab had also been treated at Sanglah Hospital. The result of test was negative although the patient died. According to the Head of Microbiology Laboratory of Sanglah Hospital, Dr. Sri Budayanti, the MERS CoV was a disease caused by the corona virus remaining to belong to SARS family. Progressivity rate of the corona virus was high enough though was not as fierce as bird flu.

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

SAN FRANCISCO — Google thinks it’s time for an Internet-connected watch that performs many of the same tasks as a smartphone but with fewer distractions and rude interruptions. The Internet’s most influential company is trying to unleash a new era in mobile computing with a version of its Android software tailored for high-tech watches and other devices that can be worn instead of held. Now, to learn a user’s routines and preference so it can automatically show important information that can be seen with a quick look at the wrist. Google is already trying to create more uses for Android watches by making the software available to computer programmers interested in making apps for the software. Cultivating more applications will be crucial because smartwatches probably may never become the main device that people use to help manage their lives, said Gartner analyst Brian Blau. That means consumers are going to have to see more compelling features to be persuaded to spend another $100 or $200 for a complementary device to a smartphone or tablet. “Fashion is a big industry, but selling these watches will be more of challenge,” Blau predicted. “We still need to see what kind of cool apps there will be and what kind of new behaviors they will enable.” The first Android watch may come from Motorola Mobility, a Google subsidiary that is in the process of being sold to Lenovo Group. Motorola already has built a prototype of its Android watch, called “Moto 360,” that will go on sale this sum-
mer. No details on pricing were announced. LG Electronics, a frequent Google partner in the smartphone and tablet markets, and fashion accessory maker Fossil Group also say they will share more details about their Android watches in the coming months. Other device makers working on Android watches include Asus, HTC and Samsung Electronics, according to Google. Those companies will likely be competing against a highly anticipated smartwatch from iPhone maker Apple Inc. that is expected to be unveiled later this year. True to its secretive nature, Apple hasn’t confirmed any plans to add a watch to its product line, although CEO Tim Cook has left little doubt he is intrigued by the concept. There are already several other smartwatches on the market, including a recently released timepiece from Samsung that runs on that company’s own operating system. So far, those watches have proven to be novelties that primarily appeal to gadget-loving geeks and physical fitness enthusiasts looking for more tools to help track their workouts and general health.

The “Android Wear” operating system released Tuesday is an altered version of Google’s popular software that powers more than 1 billion of the world’s smartphones and tablets. The new software will run on an array of so-called smartwatches scheduled to be released later this year. The Android watches will be less conspicuous — and perhaps less obnoxious — than Google Glass, the high-tech headwear that includes a small camera and thumbnail-sized display screen attach to frames that look like a pair of spectacles. She added the fertile land in Bali continued to be undermined by development. Consequently, the fertile land was getting narrower and vanished in the long run. “Selling land is identical to be poor. Even though the land is fertile, but the owners are poor, they would be inclined to sell it,” said Kartini. The availability of water had declined due to proliferation of tourist accommodation sucking much water to meet their needs. Even, there was a drilling made up to 200 meter deep. As a result, the need for water continued to increase without accompanied with the effort to safeguard and conserve the water resources in Bali. “Bali has ground water in Tabanan and Denpasar. Since 2011, Bali has faced water crisis. If this condition is not promptly addressed, it will be hazardous,” she affirmed. To maintain soil fertility, Kartini campaigned for the use of organic fertilizers. Other than preserving the land fertility, the crops were also safe to consume. “For example, I make organic fertilizer development at Pengambengan area. Previously, the land was disadvantaged and getting narrower. However, after I developed organic substance, local people can cultivate stony banana and betel leaf,” said Kartini. Similar matter was also revealed by Phyllis Kaplan from Sawah Bali Foundation. She decisively expected Balinese community to save the water supply so the subak territories would not dry out. When the water supply could flow normally and the land conversion could be dammed, subak as a World Cultural Heritage could be maintained. The mayors joined opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez, who is being held on charges of arson and conspiracy, as leading government opponents jailed by President Nicolas Maduro’s administration since the unrest began last month. WASHINGTON - The Federal Reserve cut back its stimulus program by another $10 billion Wednesday despite the recent US economic slowdown, which it blamed “in part” on severe winter weather. The Federal Open Market Committee reduced stimulus spending to $55 billion a month, saying the broader economy has “sufficient underlying strength” to support continued improvement in the labor market. But new Fed Chair Janet Yellen said that the central bank still did not foresee raising its base fed funds interest rate until next year, as long as unemployment remains too high and inflation is wellcontrolled. “We know we are not close to full employment,” she said. In a review of recent conditions and its monetary policy, the FOMC said growth had slowed during the winter months, and that the housing sector recovery remains slow. Meanwhile it called indicators from the labor market “mixed” but said that they “on balance showed further improvement.” Despite the slower activity, the FOMC said that the cumulative progress in the economy and jobs market still justified another cutback to its bond purchase program, which it began tapering in December when it was $85 billion a month. But in a significant shift to policy, the FOMC jettisoned the two specific numbers for unemployment and inflation that it set in December 2012 as thresholds for weighing a rate increase, saying the numerical thresholds no longer served policy communication. The FOMC revised its forward guidance on rates to a more qualitative basis, Yellen said, “to better reflect conditions as they now stand, and are likely to evolve over coming quarters.” The change came after the official unemployment rate, 6.7 percent last month, had neared the official threshold of 6.5 percent even while the FOMC saw the economy as not yet ready for higher rates. The Federal Reserve meanwhile cut back slightly its economic growth forecast for this year and next, but said the unemployment rate would fall faster than it forecast in December. LOI CHYARAM VILLAGE, Myanmar — The rebel soldiers climbing this mountain, rifles at their shoulders, are going into battle not with government forces, but against opium crops that are destroying communities in eastern Myanmar as they succumb to drug addiction. Captain Glang Dang of the Taang National Liberation Army, the armed wing of the Palaung ethnic minority, claims his men are making progress, thanks in part to local villagers, who are helping knock down and burn waves of poppies now in full bloom. It’s unclear, though, whether the rebels troops who rely on the drug trade as their main source of income can or will do more than just wipe out a few fields here and there to placate villagers desperate over the toll drugs are taking. Myanmar was the world’s No. 1 producer of opium, the main ingredient in heroin, until 2003, when it was surpassed by Afghanistan. After a few years of decline, regional and local demand has revived poppy production in recent years. In 2013 Myanmar produced 870 tons of opium, up 26 percent from 2012 and the highest figure in a decade. In some of communities along the rugged frontier of Shan state, half the residents are addicts of opium and heroin, even children as young as 13. Deaths by overdose are common. “Drugs are destroying the lives of both adults and young people. WASHINGTON - Japanese trading company Marubeni Corporation has agreed to pay an $88-million fine after admitting bribing Indonesian government officials to secure a lucrative power project, the US Justice Department said Wednesday. A Justice Department statement said Marubeni and employees from consortium partner Alstom had bribed a high-ranking Indonesian member of parliament and members of the country’s state-owned electricity company to secure a $118-million contract known as the Tarahan project. Payments totalling several hundred thousand dollars were funnelled to corrupt officials in Indonesia via bogus consultants hired specifically to disperse the bribes, the statement said. Two officials from the US subsidiary of French firm Alstom have already pleaded guilty to US charges in connection with the scam, which began in 2002. Two other Alstom executives face charges but have not yet entered pleas.
“Marubeni and its co-conspirators were successful in securing the Tarahan project and subsequently made payments to the consultants for the purpose of bribing the Indonesian officials,” the Justice Department said. Money was paid into a bank account in Maryland before being transferred to Indonesia. Marubeni pleaded guilty to an eightcount indictment filed in federal court in Connecticut on Wednesday. The company admitted once count of conspiracy to violate the anti-bribery provisions of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) and seven counts of violating the same law. The $88-million fine is set to be ratified at a sentencing hearing on May 15.
“Companies that wish to do business in the United States or with US companies must adhere to US law, and that means bribery is unacceptable,” said FBI official Valerie Parlave. Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslimmajority country, introduced a tough anti-pornography law in 2008 that criminalises any work that could be deemed obscene. Jayadi is accused of making the six-minute video in a hotel room in 2011, said Didik Purwanto, police chief in Bogor district, which includes Cisarua. “He has deliberately produced a porn video for a private collection,” Purwanto said, adding the alleged offence could carry a 12-year jail sentence. The video started circulating in the area recently and was passed between people’s mobile phones, said Purwanto. LONDON — Following a fruitful two-year relationship, Wimbledon champion Andy Murray has parted ways with coach Ivan Lendl — the man who turned him from a four-time Grand Slam runner-up into a two-time major champion. Murray and Lendl announced their decision on the British player’s blog on Wednesday, a few days after Murray lost in the fourth round at Indian Wells. “I’m eternally grateful to Ivan for all his hard work over the past two years, the most successful of my career so far,” said Murray, who returned from back surgery this season. “As a team, we’ve learned a lot and it will definitely be of benefit in the future. I’ll take some time with the team to consider the next steps and how we progress from here.” With Lendl, Murray won Olympic gold in London in 2012 and the U.S. Open title later the same year. In 2013, he became the first British man to triumph at Wimbledon in 77 years. Before winning the U.S. Open, Murray was 0-4 in Grand Slam finals. Only one other man in the Open era, which began in 1968, lost his first four major titles matches: Lendl. The Czech-born baseline player then went on to win eight Grand Slam singles titles during a 17-year career, spending 270 weeks at No. 1 in the world rankings. Lendl first got involved with Murray in December 2011. LONDON — The English Football Association has charged Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho with improper conduct for going onto the pitch and approaching the referee during his team’s 1-0 loss to Aston Villa in the Premier League. The incident occurred in the final stages of the match at Villa Park on Saturday. Mourinho was upset after his midfielder, Ramires, was sent off, the Brazilian becoming the second Chelsea player to receive a red card in the game after Willian. Mourinho was ordered from the touchline by referee Chris Foy. The FA says in a statement on Wednesday that Mourinho’s “behavior in re-entering the field of play and ... approaching the match referee amounted to improper conduct.” Mourinho has until Monday to respond to the charge.

DORTMUND, Germany — Borussia Dortmund is in the quarterfinals of the Champions League for the second consecutive season — although it looks far less intimidating than the team that reached the final last year. LONDON — The English Football Association has charged Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho with improper conduct for going onto the pitch and approaching the referee during his team’s 1-0 loss to Aston Villa in the Premier League. The incident occurred in the final stages of the match at Villa Park on Saturday. Mourinho was upset after his midfielder, Ramires, was sent off, the Brazilian becoming the second Chelsea player to receive a red card in the game after Willian. Mourinho was ordered from the touchline by referee Chris Foy. The FA says in a statement on Wednesday that Mourinho’s “behavior in re-entering the field of play and ... approaching the match referee amounted to improper conduct.” Mourinho has until Monday to respond to the charge.

LONDON — Following a fruitful two-year relationship, Wimbledon champion Andy Murray has parted ways with coach Ivan Lendl — the man who turned him from a four-time Grand Slam runner-up into a two-time major champion. Murray and Lendl announced their decision on the British player’s blog on Wednesday, a few days after Murray lost in the fourth round at Indian Wells. “I’m eternally grateful to Ivan for all his hard work over the past two years, the most successful of my career so far,” said Murray, who returned from back surgery this season. “As a team, we’ve learned a lot and it will definitely be of benefit in the future. I’ll take some time with the team to consider the next steps and how we progress from here.” With Lendl, Murray won Olympic gold in London in 2012 and the U.S. Open title later the same year. In 2013, he became the first British man to triumph at Wimbledon in 77 years. Before winning the U.S. Open, Murray was 0-4 in Grand Slam finals. Only one other man in the Open era, which began in 1968, lost his first four major titles matches: Lendl. LOI CHYARAM VILLAGE, Myanmar — The rebel soldiers climbing this mountain, rifles at their shoulders, are going into battle not with government forces, but against opium crops that are destroying communities in eastern Myanmar as they succumb to drug addiction. Captain Glang Dang of the Taang National Liberation Army, the armed wing of the Palaung ethnic minority, claims his men are making progress, thanks in part to local villagers, who are helping knock down and burn waves of poppies now in full bloom. It’s unclear, though, whether the rebels troops who rely on the drug trade as their main source of income can or will do more than just wipe out a few fields here and there to placate villagers desperate over the toll drugs are taking. Myanmar was the world’s No. 1 producer of opium, the main ingredient in heroin, until 2003, when it was surpassed by Afghanistan. After a few years of decline, regional and local demand has revived poppy production in recent years. In 2013 Myanmar produced 870 tons of opium, up 26 percent from 2012 and the highest figure in a decade. In some of communities along the rugged frontier of Shan state, half the residents are addicts of opium and heroin, even children as young as 13. Deaths by overdose are common. “Drugs are destroying the lives of both adults and young people. NEW DELHI — An Indian court convicted five men Thursday for raping a photojournalist and a call-center operator last summer inside an abandoned textile mill in the financial hub of Mumbai, cases that renewed calls to wipe out the scourge of sexual violence in India. The rapes happened about a month apart in the same abandoned mill in the Lower Parel section of Mumbai, where luxury malls and condominiums stand alongside sprawling slums. Three of the men were convicted in both cases. “(I) hope this verdict will act as a deterrent,” said Maharashtra Home Minister R. R. Patil, saying the cases were tried in the “fastest possible time.” The men face 20 years to life in prison, prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam said. Sentencing was expected on Friday. Two minors are being tried separately by a juvenile court. In the first case, a call-center

WASHINGTON - Japanese trading company Marubeni Corporation has agreed to pay an $88-million fine after admitting bribing Indonesian government officials to secure a lucrative power project, the US Justice Department said Wednesday. A Justice Department statement said Marubeni and employees from consortium partner Alstom had bribed a high-ranking Indonesian member of parliament and members of the country’s state-owned electricity company to secure a $118-million contract known as the Tarahan project. Payments totalling several hundred thousand dollars were funnelled to corrupt officials in Indonesia via bogus consultants hired specifically to disperse the bribes, the statement said. Two officials from the US subsidiary of French firm Alstom have already pleaded guilty to US charges in connection with the scam, which began in 2002. Two other Alstom executives face charges but have not yet entered pleas.
“Marubeni and its co-conspirators were successful in securing the Tarahan project and subsequently made payments to the consultants for the purpose of bribing the Indonesian officials,” the Justice Department said. Money was paid into a bank account in Maryland before being transferred to Indonesia. Marubeni pleaded guilty to an eightcount indictment filed in federal court in Connecticut on Wednesday. The company admitted once count of conspiracy to violate the anti-bribery provisions of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) and seven counts of violating the same law. The $88-million fine is set to be ratified at a sentencing hearing on May 15.
“Companies that wish to do business in the United States or with US companies must adhere to US law, and that means bribery is unacceptable,” said FBI official Valerie Parlave. Justice Department assistant Attorney General Mythili Raman said Marubeni had paid the price for trying to hide involvement in the scam. “Marubeni pleaded guilty to engaging in a seven-year scheme to pay - and conceal - bribes to a high-ranking member of Parliament and other foreign officials in Indonesia,” Raman said. “The company refused to play by the rules, then refused to cooperate with the government’s investigation. “Now Marubeni faces the consequences for its crooked business practices in Indonesia.”

Saeful Sardi Jayadi, 44, surrendered to police Saturday after the video began circulating in Cisarua, south of Jakarta. Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslimmajority country, introduced a tough anti-pornography law in 2008 that criminalises any work that could be deemed obscene. Jayadi is accused of making the six-minute video in a hotel room in 2011, said Didik Purwanto, police chief in Bogor district, which includes Cisarua. “He has deliberately produced a porn video for a private collection,” Purwanto said, adding the alleged offence could carry a 12-year jail sentence. The video started circulating in the area recently and was passed between people’s mobile phones, said Purwanto. The cleric fled the area last week to avoid arrest but later handed himself himself in. WASHINGTON - The Federal Reserve cut back its stimulus program by another $10 billion Wednesday despite the recent US economic slowdown, which it blamed “in part” on severe winter weather. The Federal Open Market Committee reduced stimulus spending to $55 billion a month, saying the broader economy has “sufficient underlying strength” to support continued improvement in the labor market. But new Fed Chair Janet Yellen said that the central bank still did not foresee raising its base fed funds interest rate until next year, as long as unemployment remains too high and inflation is wellcontrolled. “We know we are not close to full employment,” she said. In a review of recent conditions and its monetary policy, the FOMC said growth had slowed during the winter months, and that the housing sector recovery remains slow. Meanwhile it called indicators from the labor market “mixed” but said that they “on balance showed further improvement.” Despite the slower activity, the FOMC said that the cumulative progress in the economy and jobs market still justified another cutback to its bond purchase program, which it began tapering in December when it was $85 billion a month. But in a significant shift to policy, the FOMC jettisoned the two specific numbers for unemployment and inflation that it set in December 2012 as thresholds for weighing a rate increase, saying the numerical thresholds no longer served policy communication. The FOMC revised its forward guidance on rates to a more qualitative basis, Yellen said, “to better reflect conditions as they now stand, and are likely to evolve over coming quarters.” The change came after the official unemployment rate, 6.7 percent last month, had neared the official threshold of 6.5 percent even while the FOMC saw the economy as not yet ready for higher rates. The Federal Reserve meanwhile cut back slightly its economic growth forecast for this year and next, but said the unemployment rate would fall faster than it forecast in December. That means consumers are going to have to see more compelling features to be persuaded to spend another $100 or $200 for a complementary device to a smartphone or tablet. “Fashion is a big industry, but selling these watches will be more of challenge,” Blau predicted. “We still need to see what kind of cool apps there will be and what kind of new behaviors they will enable.” The first Android watch may come from Motorola Mobility, a Google subsidiary that is in the process of being sold to Lenovo Group. Motorola already has built a prototype of its Android watch, called “Moto 360,” that will go on sale this sum-

Even though the land is fertile, but the owners are poor, they would be inclined to sell it,” said Kartini. The availability of water had declined due to proliferation of tourist accommodation sucking much water to meet their needs. Even, there was a drilling made up to 200 meter deep. As a result, the need for water continued to increase without accompanied with the effort to safeguard and conserve the water resources in Bali. “Bali has ground water in Tabanan and Denpasar. Since 2011, Bali has faced water crisis. If this condition is not promptly addressed, it will be hazardous,” she affirmed. To maintain soil fertility, Kartini campaigned for the use of organic fertilizers. Other than preserving the land fertility, the crops were also safe to consume. “For example, I make organic fertilizer development at Pengambengan area. Previously, the land was disadvantaged and getting narrower. However, after I developed organic substance, local people can cultivate stony banana and betel leaf,” said Kartini. Similar matter was also revealed by Phyllis Kaplan from Sawah Bali Foundation. She decisively expected Balinese community to save the water supply so the subak territories would not dry out. When the water supply could flow normally and the land conversion could be dammed, subak as a World Cultural Heritage could be maintained. Sanglah Hospital treats another suspect of MERS CoV Bali Post
DENPASAR - After caring for a patient of MERS CoV suspect from Arab who then died not long time ago, Sanglah Hospital got another suspect patient. The patient is a Denpasar resident who was then referred to Sanglah Hospital around 11:30 p.m., Tuesday (Mar 18).
The Head of Bali Health Agency, Ketut Suarjaya, confirmed the MERS CoV suspect patient caused by corona virus. “The patient is a woman of 72 years old. She has a history of traveling to Saudi Arabia for pilgrimage purposes and previously was suffering the symptoms of cough and heat,” said Suarjaya. The patient just arrived home from umrah pilgrimage, Saturday (Mar 15) and she then got cough and heat, Monday (Mar 17). After that, the patient came to a specialist and from the results of X-rays was found pneumonia. Considering the background of patient coming home from the Middle East and based on standard operating procedures (SOP), the patient was directly referred to Sanglah Hospital for treatment and examination to ascertain whether the patient was positively or negatively suffering MERS CoV. According to Suarjaya, the Bali Health Agency had assigned a surveillance team to the field to ascertain whether there was possibility for the case of new suspect. “We’ve assigned a team to the residential environment of the
patient to check the possibility of new case,” said Suarjaya. Meanwhile, Spokesperson of Sanglah Hospital, Kadek Nariyantha, explained that condition of patient until Wednesday (Mar 19) was stable. She was treated in Nusa Indah Room for taking the sample and examination. “The samples were taken on Wednesday morning and the CVR was sent to the Health Research and Development,” he said. For further results, added Nariyantha, his party still had to wait until the results were issued, while the patient was being treated in Nusa Indah Room. As had been known, some time ago a suspect patient of MERS-CoV from Arab had also been treated at Sanglah Hospital. The result of test was negative although the patient died. According to the Head of Microbiology Laboratory of Sanglah Hospital, Dr. Sri Budayanti, the MERS CoV was a disease caused by the corona virus remaining to belong to SARS family. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

‘Divergent’ doesn’t diverge quite enough

If you have a kid of a certain age — especially a girl, preteen or thereabouts — then you know the young-adult entertainment message of choice these days: You’re you, and nobody else. Don’t let them define you. Don’t let them put you into one of their neat little slots. You’re unique. And you’re gonna show the world. You go, girl! So it’s no surprise that this is the message of “Divergent,” the latest young adult blockbuster-in-waiting. It’s also no surprise that the emerging young star Shailene Woodley delivers a crucial dose of humility, sensitivity and intelligence in this showcase role. And it’s no surprise, either, that she generates nice chemistry with her rather absurdly good-looking co-star, Theo James. What IS surprising is that with all these promising elements, “Divergent,” the first of three installments based on first-time author Veronica Roth’s trilogy, ultimately feels so lackluster. For a film predicated on the principle that being different — or “divergent” — is what makes you special, “Divergent” just doesn’t diverge enough from the pack. Not that this will hurt the film’s chances at the box office. Like “The Hunger Games,” the franchise to which it will
unavoidably be compared, “Divergent” has a ready-made audience of fans just waiting to fill those seats — over 11 million books have been sold, after all. Those book fans will have a crucial head start. “Divergent” takes a good deal of time explaining plot mechanics, but If you already know what’s happening, you can spend more time admiring, say, those cheekbones on James — or his day-old, dystopian stubble. In a nutshell, “Divergent,” directed by Neil Burger, takes place in a futuristic Chicago, a bleak version indeed of the Windy City. Half of every building seems to be destroyed, leaving hulking shells. Civilization is divided into five factions, based on human virtues: Dauntless, Abnegation, Erudite, Amity, and Candor. Beatrice Prior (Woodley) is born into Abnegation. But at age 16, a citizen can choose their own faction, at the Choos-

ing Ceremony. Right before, they take an aptitude test that tells them which faction they fit best. Beatrice’s results are downright scary: She has not one virtue, but all of them. She is “divergent” — which makes her dangerous. To the distress of her parents (Ashley Judd and Tony Goldwyn), Beatrice opts to join Dauntless, the most courageous faction, but also the most reckless: Pierced and tattooed, they look like unusually fit punk rockers. Soon she’s in boot camp, jumping on and off trains (trains never seem to actually stop in this movie) and into pits, and fighting viciously in the ring, under the guidance of the initially unforgiving Four (James), her trainer. Gradually, Beatrice — she’s renamed herself “Tris” — becomes buff and strong. But will it be enough to survive? On top of all this, there’s a political storm brewing, led by the villainess Jeanine Matthews, played by a blonde and stiletto-clad Kate Winslet in one of her less convincing performances (in a sadly under-written role.) Matthews is the leader of Erudite, which means she’s got a killer IQ along with those killer heels, and she’s convinced that Divergents are a threat to her plan to overthrow Abnegation.
Spielberg’s Shoah Foundation expands, turns 20
LOS ANGELES — Steven Spielberg isn’t planning on making any more Holocaust movies. The Oscar-winning director is leaving that to the Shoah Foundation. After “Schindler’s List,” Spielberg turned his lens on real survivors of the World War II Jewish genocide through his foundation, which has since filmed nearly 52,000 testimonies from Holo-
caust. The film’s greatest legacy isn’t its seven Oscars, $300 million in worldwide box office or even its message of humanity, says the 67-year-old, but the ongoing work of the Shoah Foundation. “It literally popped into my head on the drive back to my house in Krakow after a day of shooting the film that if ‘Schindler’s List’ had any success at all, the success would not be a monetary, commercial one, but the success would be that this film would open a door for me to start taking as many testimonies as humanly possible,” Spielberg said in a telephone interview Monday on behalf of the organization, now known as USC Shoah Foundation — The Institute for Visual History and Education. He also wrote the introduction for a book commemorating its 20th anniversary, “Testimony: The Legacy of Schindler’s List and the USC Shoah Foundation,” which will be released next week. CANBERRA - Australia said Thursday that two objects -- one estimated at 24 metres (79 feet) long -- had been spotted in the Indian Ocean, the “best lead we have” in the search for a Malaysian passenger jet. Four search aircraft had been dispatched to the remote area of the southern Indian Ocean to check whether grainy satellite photos indicated debris from missing Malaysia Airlines MH370, as relatives of passengers huddled anxiously awaiting news. Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott told parliament the images represented “new and credible information” but stressed that the link with flight MH370 had still to be confirmed. “Following specialist analysis of this satellite imagery, two possible objects related to the search have been identified,” Abbott said. The Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777, carrying 227 passengers and 12 crew, vanished in the early hours of March 8 after veering drastically off course over the South China Sea while en route to Beijing. The reason for the deviation remains unknown although investigators believe it was the result of “deliberate action” by someone on board. Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) official John Young said the largest object sighted was assessed as being 24 metres long. The two objects were in the southern Indian Ocean, about 2,500 kilometres (1,553 miles) southwest of Perth. “The indication to me is of objects that are of a reasonable size and probably awash with water and bobbing up and down over the surface,” Young said, calling it, “the best lead we have right now”. “But we need to get there, find them, see them, assess them, to know whether it’s really meaningful or not.” A merchant ship was expected to arrive in the vicinity around 0700 GMT and the Australian naval vessel HMAS Success, which is capable of retrieving any debris, is some days away. Abbott warned that it may turn out the objects “are not related to the search for flight MH370”. The international search for the plane has been marked by numerous false leads, but the latest photos are the first solid clue since the search area was significantly expanded last weekend to take in a vast part of the Indian Ocean. The expansion, based on sketchy radar and satellite data, involved two vast search corridors, stretching south into the Indian Ocean and north over South and Central Asia. Most analysts had favoured the southern corridor, saying it was unlikely the airliner passed undetected over nearly one dozen countries in the northern arc.
