‘Lego Batman’ Flies High Over ‘Great Wall,’ ‘Fist Fight’

LOS ANGELES - “The Lego Batman Movie” is dominating the North American box office with an estimated $44 million this President’s Day weekend -- nearly matching the combined haul of “Fifty Shades Darker” and “The Great Wall.” Universal’s second weekend of “Fifty Shades” is heading for $24 million at 3,714 sites and its action-fantasy “The Great Wall” was projected to wind up with $21 million at 3,325 locations for the Friday-Monday period. Lionsgate’s second weekend of “John Wick: Chapter 2” is finishing in a solid fourth place with $19.5 million at 3,113 venues as holdovers propped up the holiday weekend business.

New Line’s opening of high school comedy “Fist Fight” showed only a modest punch in fifth with around $14 million at 3,185 locations. And Fox’s horror-thriller “A Cure for Wellness” was scaring up a modest $4.9 million at 2,704 screens as it was projected to finish 11th. “Lego Batman,” Warner Bros.’ spinoff of 2014’s “The Lego Movie,” is playing at 4,088 sites and will wind up the weekend with

more than $108 million in its first 11 days. It opened with $53 million on the Feb. 10-12 weekend, so it’s declined by only 35 percent in the second Friday-Sunday period. Will Arnett returns as the voice of Batman, along with Zach Galifianakis, Michael Cera, Rosario Dawson, and Ralph Fiennes. “Lego Batman” scored strong critical support with a 91 percent “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. “Fifty Shades Darker” declined about 55 percent from its opening weekend and should finish the weekend with an 11-day total of $93 million. Iraq launches offensive on last Islamic State stronghold in Mosul

BAGHDAD/ERBIL - U.S.-backed Iraqi forces on Sunday launched a ground offensive to dislodge Islamic State militants from the western part of the city of Mosul, and put an end to their ambitions for territorial rule in Iraq. Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced the start of the offensive in the northern city, asking the armed forces to “respect human rights” during the battle and to take care of those displaced by the fighting.

Islamic State militants are essentially under siege in western Mosul, along with an estimated 650,000 civilians, after they were forced out of the eastern part of the city in the first phase of an offensive that concluded last month, after 100 days of fighting. Up to 400,000 civilians could be displaced by the offensive as residents of western Mosul suffer food and fuel shortages and markets are closed, United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator for Iraq Lise Grande told Reuters on Saturday. Iraqi federal police units are leading a northward charge on the Mosul districts that lie west of the Tigris river, aiming to capture Mosul airport, just south of the city, according to statements from the armed forces joint command. They dashed through several villages, reaching Zakrutiya, a hamlet 5 km (3 miles) south of the airport by the end of the day, the statements said, and captured a power distribution station along the way, killing sev-

The Rapid Response, an elite Interior Ministry Unit, is advancing alongside the federal police and captured several villages, according to an officer, who said they were largely abandoned. “Mosul would be a tough fight for any army in the world,” the commander of the U.S.-led coalition forces, Lt. To date, the coalition has conducted more than 10,000 air strikes against Islamic State targets in Iraq and trained and equipped more than 70,000 Iraqi forces, the statement said. U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis declined to offer details about U.S. battle plans when speaking to reporters in the United Arab Emirates. “The coalition forces are in support of this operation and we will continue ... with the accelerated effort to destroy ISIS,” he said, using an acronym for the militant group. Two militants blew themselves up in eastern Mosul on Sunday, killing three soldiers and two civilians, and wounding a dozen people, security sources said. Coastal Abrasion at Pengambengan Beach getting worse Residents protest against factory

Coastal abrasion at Pengambengan, particularly at Ketapang Lampu and Ketapang Muara, is getting worse. Many people’s homes both on state land and on private land have been destroyed. On Sunday (Feb. 19), local residents protested by putting up a giant signboard on a fishing boat. They accused companies located in the area of being responsible for the abrasion and demanded that they take responsibility for worsening conditions. Local residents also wrote on the wall of a house that has been left in ruins asking who they should complain to and who can help. Some residents complained about factories on the beachside that fortressed their establishments with large bolders and backfilled the sea. “Municipal police had tried to stop the construction but the company insisted on building and even looked strong. We are the ones who have become the victims. Abrasino is gettign worse and or houses have been destroyed because of the changes they made to the coast” said local residents who had been living just west of

Conservation of palm-leaf manuscripts requires public awareness

DENPASAR — Some high school students diligently cleaned dust off palm-leaf manuscripts with brushes. Next, they took a piece of cotton dipped in a mixture of alcohol and citronella oil and further cleaned off the ancient texts. These stuents from SMAN 3 Denpasar were learning about palm-leaf manuscript conservation from Udayana University’s palm-leaf manuscript techincal unit on Saturday (Feb. 18). “Why are we teaching palm-leaf manuscript conservatoin? Because palm leaf is fragile and many of the manuscripts being kept in people’s homes are very old, some of them are hundreds of years old”, said chief of the palm-leaf manuscript technical unit of Udayana University, Dr. Ida Bagus Rai Putra. According to Rai Putra, there are a lot of palm-leaf manuscripts out there that have not been very well maintained. Since these manuscripts are considered hole, may people who have had them passed down to them are afraif to touch the manuscripts out of respect. Some palm-leaf manuscripts are even abandoned because the heirs are not familiar with the contents of the manuscripts. Actually, these manuscripts are an invaluable heritage as a source of remarkable ideas inherent to the Balinese people. “Palm-leaf manuscripts also contain applied science. Any field of science can be added to or compared to the information in some palm-leaf manuscripts. We at the Udayana University, for instance, have dozens of palm-leaf manuscripts about healing that are now in the process of being conserved and digitized”, he explained. Aside from manuscripts about healing, said Rai Putra, many palm-leaf manuscripts also contain valuable information about literature, technology, agriculture, astronomy, almanac, seasons and early detection of diseases. So far, Udayana University’s palm-leaf manuscript technical unit has gathered approximately 970 manuscripts in their collections. These include manuscripts that had been stored in people’s homes but that were not being maintained in good condition. “We have made an MoU with people who have palm-leaf manuscripts that they can still read or take them back whenever needed. If the manuscripts are not needed and cannot be kept in good conditions, we have a suitable place to store them”, he added. Rai Putra also added that the most important aspect of palm-leaf manuscript conservation is making more people aware about the importance of physically preserving this heritage. Although there is a tradition in Bali known as nedun meaning to preserve, Udayana is also digitizing many palm-leaf manuscripts in an attempt to ensure the sruvival of the data recorded on these precious leaves. “We also train personnel to read palm-leaf manuscript. We’ve often go to different communities to read purana (mythology and folklore), inscriptions or chronicles. Anyone can contact our palm-leaf manuscript technical unit and we wil be happy to help the community”, he explained. wen Rai Putra went on to say that they also try to physically rescue these manuscripts by cleaning each page with a mixture of citronella oil and alcohol. Citronella oil is made of lemongrass and functions to kill microbes on the palm-leaf. It is best to celan the leaves frequently. A single volume of a palm leaf manuscript can included anywhere form 10 to 400 sheets of plam leaf. (kmb32)

Disturbingly, the house of an 85 year old grandmother named Sri Ani located in Ketapang Lampu is currently being destroyed by the waves that lash at her bedroom door. Grandma Sri Ani lives alone in the house and is now sick and says that she cannot sleep well because she is constantly worried about the alarmingly high level of the sea. “ IN the past, our house was a fair distance form the beach. Now our house is being destroyed and the sea is just an inch away, right in front of the bedroom” said Grandma Sri Ani. This grandmother said that she would like to move, but has nowhere to go. This house is all that here husband left her and she has not been granted any substitue land. In order to buld this house they had

to go hungry. It is the home of their love and she is reluctant to leave. “ But one day I will be forced to leave, but I do not know where to go. Maybe I will go stay with my widowed daughter”, she said mournfully. She went on to explain that she has been sick for the last three months. Before that she was still able to work collecting fish, but now she cannot do anything and depends on the mercy of others. Grandma Sri Ani is not the only one facing such hardship. The house of late grandpa Parno is also being eaten away by the sea. “Now, grandpa Parno’s house is occupied by his friend and sometimes his children also come here”, said a neighbour. Residents in the area are feeling restless about the fact that there is no ‘mitigation assistance’ forthcoming from the factories or from the government. Many have no other place to seek shelter. “Hopefully, there will be some assistance from the factory or the government”, said another locall resident. (kmb)

SpaceX launches rocket from historic NASA pad in Florida

CAPE CANAVERAL - A SpaceX Falcon rocket blasted off on Sunday from a Florida launch pad once used to send NASA astronauts to the moon, a step forward for billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk and his company’s goal of ferrying astronauts to the International Space Station. The 229-foot tall (70-meter) Falcon 9 soared off a seaside launch pad at the Kennedy Space Center at 9:39 a.m. EST (1439 GMT) carrying a Dragon cargo ship that holds supplies and science experiments for the station. Nine minutes after blastoff, the main section of the rocket flew back to a landing pad at nearby Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, the eighth successful touchdown for Space Exploration Technologies Corp. “Baby came back,” Musk wrote on Twitter, celebrating the landing. SpaceX had decided to delay the mission on Saturday, 13 seconds before launch due to concerns about the steering system in the rocket’s upper stage. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration closely monitored Sunday’s launch to learn more about the company’s operations before it clears SpaceX to fly U.S. astronauts. The liftoff marked a successful debut for SpaceX at Kennedy’s

Launch Complex 39A, originally built for the 1960s-era Apollo moon program and later repurposed for the space shuttles. SpaceX plans to use the pad for commercial missions, as well as future manned flights. The pad was last used for the final space shuttle launch in 2011. In 2014, SpaceX signed a 20-year lease and has spent millions on remodeling. “It was really awesome to see 39A roar back to life,” SpaceX Dragon program manager Jessica Jensen told reporters after the launch. “This is a huge deal for us.” It was also SpaceX’s first launch from Florida since an accident in September caused heavy damage to what had been the company’s prime site at Cape Canaveral Air

KUALA LUMPUR — A paranoid dictator’s estranged brother. Two young female assassins. A crowded international airport. And a mysterious poison that kills within hours. It’s the perfect recipe for a thrilling cloak-and-dagger spy novel. Except some — or possibly even all — of this tale could be true in the apparent assassination of Kim Jong Nam, the older half brother of reclusive North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. And just like similar intriguing cases from the past, the public is hanging on to every detail because there’s just something about murder by poison that captivates. “A gun announces its mischief; poison can sneak in with a sip of champagne,” said Robert Thompson, a pop culture expert at Syracuse University. “The question isn’t why we are fascinated with this latest story, it’s why wouldn’t we be?” Still, speculation that Kim Jong Nam was killed by two young female “agents” at the busy Kuala Lumpur airport last week left even the most seasoned toxicology sleuths shaking their heads. Add in that the portly sibling was apparently sprayed in the face with a substance so potent it killed him before he could reach the hospital, and you’ve got a scene straight out of a James Bond movie. Four people, including the two women — one Indonesian and the other traveling on a Vietnamese passport — have been detained. The Indonesian told authorities she thought she was participating in a comedy show prank. Conspiracy theories and speculation abound as police scramble to unravel what really happened to Kim Jong Nam, aged 45 or 46, the son of late North Korean leader Kim Jong Il and a mistress. After falling out of favor with the family, the son lived for years in exile and was about to catch a flight to Macau when the attack took place. He sought help at the airport clinic after suddenly falling ill and died en route to the hospital. An autopsy has been performed, but the results have not been released. If a chemical agent really was to blame, finding it may be the hardest part of all. Tissue and fluid samples may need to be sent abroad for analysis at a facility with greater capabilities, such as in Japan or at the FBI’s crime lab, if Malaysian experts cannot pinpoint the cause of death. “The more unusual, the more potent, the more volatile a poison is, the less likely it is to be detected,” said Olif Drummer, a toxicologist at Australia’s Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine who has spent 40 years in the field. Experts routinely tasked with finding answers in poisoning cases say the events at Kuala Lumpur’s budget airline terminal are bizarre, but not impossible. They wonder: What substance could have been used to kill the victim so quickly without sickening the women who apparently deployed it, along with anyone else nearby? Difficult, they say, but doable. “It’s not an agent that could be cooked up in a hotel room. It’s going to take a lot of knowledge regarding the chemical in order to facilitate an attack like this,” said Bruce Goldberger, a leading toxicologist who heads the forensic medicine division at the University of Florida. He said a nerve gas or ricin, a deadly substance found in castor beans, could be possible. A strong opioid compound could also have been used, though that would likely have incapacitated the victim immediately. “It would have to be cleverly designed in order to be applied in this fashion without hurting anyone else,” Goldberger said. History is filled with poisoners. From jilted lovers seeking revenge to greedy spouses looking to collect on life insurance policies. Arsenic, cyanide and strychnine are often the toxins of choice used in murders, but political hits are usually a much more complicated business. Take the Cold War case of Bulgarian defector and journalist Georgi Markov. He was jabbed in the leg with an umbrella in 1978 at a bus stop in London. He died three days later, and a pellet of highly toxic ricin was found under his skin — shot there by a device concealed inside the umbrella. No one was ever arrested, but Bulgarian secret police were suspected with help from the Soviet KGB. The Kremlin has been implicated in a number of high-profile cases including Alexander Litvinenko, a former Russian spy who fled to the United Kingdom and was lethally poisoned by radioactive polonium-210 in 2006. Bengkala landfill is overloaded SINGARAJA — The landfill at Bengkala village, Kubutambahan, is overloaded. In order to reduce the volume of waste being dumped here, the government of Buleleng continues to encourage waste management at the household level. Head of the Buleleng Environment Agency, Nyoman Genep, stated that waste generated by houselholds in Buleleng ,especially in urban areas, is mostly transported to the landfill, causing the 4.8 hectare landfill to become overloaded.. “Garbage at the landfill has been mounting and the dump site is now classified as overloaded” said Genep recently. According to Genep, before garbage is transported the the landfill, it must

first be sorted at the depot and the integrated waste processing (TPST) site. Oganic waste should be processed into compost that can be used to fetilize the neighborhood urban parks, while inorganic waste one can be sold to one of the 17 waste banks in the area. “For the time being, we are maximizong the sorting process at the depot. We also continuously encourage sorting at household level”, he explained. He also explained that in the next few years, garbage that has been buried for five years in two holes at the landfill will be dug up and sieved. “Waste that has been buried in the holes for five years according to the santitary landfill systme, can be strained and used as fetilizer”, he said. Two puppies infected with rabies found in Jembrana NEGARA - More dogs with rabies were found early this year in Jembrana. Subdivision of Animal Health at the Jembrana Food and Agriculture Agency found two puppies infected with rabies in Tulung hamlet, Sarikuning, Melaya, in early February and one inPalunganbatu hamlet, Batuagung, in mid February. Subdivision Head of Animal Health, A.A. Ngurah Mahadikara, accompanied by Head of Observer and Investigation, I Wayan Widarsa, said on Friday (Feb. 17) that although there were several cases of people being bitten by dogs in Jembrana in January, based on samples and follow-up, none of the dogs were found to be carrying rabies. According to Mahadikara, as of mid-February, his agency had sent samples from 17 dogs to be lab tested and 2 of them were declared to be infected with rabies. The two positive cases were both puppies that were about 3 months old. As soon as they found out that the puppy from Tulung hamlet had been carrying rabies, his agency went to this hamlet to vaccinate all the dogs and elminated four dogs in the area suspected of carrying rabbies. Samples from the four dogs were tested by the Denpasar Veterinary Center (BBVet) and were declared rabies negative. Vaccinations and selective elimination were held Palunganbatu on Monday (Feb. 20). The two rabies puppies are suspected of having become infected by rabbies because they had not been vaccinated. Mass vacccinations took place in Jembrana in April and November 2016. The spread of rabbies is caused by the tendancy of dog owners to let their dogs run wild rendering these dogs vulnerable to the transmission of rabies from other dogs or other carrier animals. (120)

SEMARAPURA — So far, the fly invasion problem in Tusan village, Banjarangkan, has not been resolved. The prescence of chicken coops in the area is suspected of being responsible for the thousands of flies that have invaded Tusan. Although officials from the subdistrict of Banjarangkan and related agencies had previsouly looked into the matter, the people of Tusan are still having to deal with the flies. Complaints about the large number of flies that have been disturbung the people of Tusan are directly related to the prescence of the nearby chicken coops. Subdistrict head of Banjarangkan, I.B. Mas Ananda, stated that these chicken coops should not result in so many flies, given that the coop requires certain permits to operate, including an environemntal hindance permit (HO). Ananda however added that the subdistict government doe not have the authority to issue such permits. This is not the first time that residents of Tusan have complained about flies. IN

Retired Philippine policeman says Duterte ordered ‘death squad’ hits

MANILA - Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte operated a “death squad” while mayor of Davao city, giving cash and orders for police and assassins to murder criminals, according to a former policeman who said he was involved in the clandestine killings. In remarks contradicting his denial under oath last year of the existence of such a “death squad”, Arturo Lascanas said he was one of the ringleaders of the group that began operating when Duterte became mayor of the southern city in 1988. Duterte has repeatedly denied involvement in vigilantism or summary executions, either as president or during his 22 years as Davao mayor. His police chief has denied there was ever a death squad in Davao, describing it as fiction created by the media. On Monday, Lascanas asserted that the Davao death squad was no myth and he was one of those who carried out secret killings of drug dealers and criminals at Duterte’s behest. “It is true, the Davao death squad, or DDS, really exists,” Lascanas told reporters at the Senate in Manila. “When Mayor Duterte sat down as mayor for the first time, we started what is called ‘salvaging’ of people, these people are suspects committing crime in Davao.” “We implemented the personal orders of Mayor Duterte to us.” Duterte’s legal counsel, Salvadore Panelo, said Lascanas’ allegations were a “continuing fabrication” and “another false narration”. Other than being known as the cleanest village in the world, Penglipuran village also has some unique traditions. Thus, the bodies are buried with the orientation to the west or towards the sunset,” he explained. Apart from the burial position, Moneng also revealed that cemetery at Penglipuran is divided into three areas. The easternmost cemetery is specifically intended to bury people that died due to unnatural causes (suicide and accident), the middle one is intended to bury babies and he adults who have never married. “In the meantime, the westernmost one is intended to bury people who died of natural causes,” said Moneng. Exciting activity like this will intrigue everyone. Residents of East Duda, Selat, Karangasem, held tug-of-war in the mud so that it became a very special attraction. Unsurprisingly, this traditional sport drew appreciation and extraordinary adrenaline. It is more challenging and needs prime energy and carefulness in thinking of beating their rivals. Obviously, the challenge is far more different from the tug-of-war on grass.

The atmosphere became more interesting when the whole body of the players was covered in mud. Their hair, face to other parts of the body was filled with mud. For newcomers, it is really a very interesting attraction when taking action to drag the rope and avoid the sprinkle of mud. The participants consisted of representatives from nine hamlets throughout East Duda village where each delegated one men’s team and one women’s team. Each team has ten personnel. At that time, the contest was followed by the women’s team of Pesangkan Anyar hamlet against the women’s team of Batu Gede hamlet. Though the participants were women, the contest became more exciting than the tug-of-war on the grass. If they already got dragged, it would be difficult to hold because it was quite slippery

and heavy. Even though being flushed by heavy rains, it did not dampen the vivacity of the residents to play or to watch the contest. “The event is aimed at encouraging young people into farming. This tug-of-war in the mud actually has become an annual event held every Christmas or December 25,” said headman of East Duda, I Gede Pawana, Monday (Dec. 26). Such an event is also associated with the anniversary of East Duda village. It is intended for entertainment, inspiring and motivating young people so that they want to get involved in the paddy field activity as farmers. “Contest of the tug-of-war in the mud is held in one of the paddy fields at Subak Pesangkan. Formerly, the field was converted into a snakefruit orchard. This activity is also to welcome the arrival of harvest season,” he explained. More than 1,400 migrants are now waiting in the North African enclave to be processed, Ceuta authorities said, adding that tents had been requested to house the latest arrivals. They must now wait to be transferred to the mainland to have their papers processed. Most are likely to be returned to Morocco or their country of origin. Ceuta authorities said around 600 people had attempted to break into the enclave on Monday using wire cutters and blunt weapons, at the same location as on Friday. Three people were hospitalised with serious injuries, including two police officers, after the rush to jump the six-metre, barbed-wire fence that surrounds Ceuta, the authorities said. Spain’s two North African enclaves, Ceuta on Morocco’s northern point off the Strait of Gibraltar, and Melilla, which lies further to the east and closer to the Algerian border, are often the focus of attempted illegal border crossings. African migrants attempt to climb fences or swim around the border along the coast as they seek an entry point into Europe. Rafflesia Arnoldii flower blooms in Bengkulu Province BENGKULU - A Rafflesia Arnoldii flower, measuring 55 centimeters in diameter, has bloomed in the protected forest area of Bukit Daun, Taba Penanjung Sub-district, Central Bengkulu District, Bengkulu Province. “The flower is blooming perfectly and can be enjoyed for the next three days,” said Gilang Ibnu, a resident who found the rare flower in Bengkulu on Monday. Arnoldii Rafflesia is the largest flower in the world, with a diameter exceeding 100 centimeters. Ibnu said that flower enthusiasts can visit the site of the blooming Rafflesia Arnoldii by walking as far as 20 meters into the forest. Visitors only need to drive from the city of Bengkulu towards Kepahiang District, passing through the crossroad of Bengkulu-South Sumatra and then stopping at the 47th kilometer mark. “We have placed a banner on the side of the road to allow visitors to find the spot where the flower is blossoming,” he remarked. LONDON - Mercedes team bosses and shareholders Toto Wolff and Niki Lauda have agreed new contracts to the end of 2020, the Formula One world champions said on Monday. The date aligns the two Austrians’ contracts with the expiration of the current Commercial Agreement with Formula One Management.

Mercedes motorsport head Wolff, who is effectively the team principal, has a 30 percent stake in Mercedes Grand Prix Limited while non-executive chairman Lauda, a retired triple world champion, has 10 percent. Daimler AG hold the remaining 60 percent. “In 2013, we restructured the management of the Team with the clear goal of

improving our performance. Since then, however, the results have exceeded our expectations,” said Daimler chairman Dieter Zetsche in a statement. “A key factor in this success has been the combination of Toto’s entrepreneurial skills and Niki’s experience. Their renewed commitment gives our programme important continuity for the next four years.”

Mercedes have won both the drivers’ and constructors’ championships for the past three years. “The last few years have been some of the most enjoyable I have had in Formula One,” said Lauda, who won his titles with Ferrari in 1975 and 1977 and McLaren in 1984. PARIS — Monaco forward Kylian Mbappe, the rising star of French football, is doing better than Thierry Henry was at the same age. Manchester City fans know all about Henry — Arsenal’s all-time leading scorer — but are poised to get a glimpse of Mbappe’s talent when City hosts Monaco in the Champions League on Tuesday night. Because of his electric speed and style of play the 18-year-old Mbappe has drawn comparisons with Henry —a world class finisher and France’s record scorer with 51 goals. Henry used to make the same dazzling runs when cutting inside from the left that Mbappe makes now, and the parallel is made stronger by the fact they broke into the Monaco side as teenagers. Mbappe’s first professional goal came at the age of 17 years, 62 days, which just happened to beat the Monaco club record held by Henry. “Every player wants to write their own history. (Henry) has written his and I hope to write mine,” Mbappe said. “I just hope it’s as good or better.” Where Mbappe has the edge is that he can already play at center forward — a quality that Henry developed at a later age. It is testament to Mbappe’s maturity that when called upon by Monaco coach Leonardo Jardim, he has switched easily from left winger to striker. When Jardim rested Radamel Falcao, his main striker, for a French Cup game and a league game this month, Mbappe scored in both. Then, when paired alongside Falcao against Metz recently, he scored a hat trick. “All that remains is finding his true position, out wide or through the middle,” said Jean-Claude Giuntini, Mbappe’s coach with France’s under-17s. Henry became a striker when he joined Arsenal from Juventus in 1999 — by which time he was nearly 22. Coach Arsene Wenger converted him from a winger averaging one goal every five games at his previous clubs into the Premier League’s most feared marksman. Mbappe, who joined Monaco at 14, started drawing attention when still shy of his 17th birthday. It was for the way he set up Monaco’s goal in a 4-1 loss to Tottenham in the Europa League, turning right back Kieran Trippier inside out before feeding striker Stephan El Shaarawy. Amid growing interest, Mbappe turned down Real Madrid last summer. He had previously visited Madrid’s facilities aged 14, greeted in person by Zinedine Zidane, one of the illustrious club’s finest ever players and its future coach. “I was a kid who had the best player in French history speaking to him,” Mbappe recounted. “It didn’t happen because I wanted to stay in my country. I decided to come to Monaco and I think I made the right choice.” Monaco has a gift for finding rare talent. Forward Anthony Martial joined Manchester United from Monaco in January last year, aged 20. But Mbappe is showing even more potential than Martial. Like Martial and Henry, he also grew up in the

Paris suburbs. Following in their footsteps, he soon joined France’s youth academy at Clairefontaine, nestled in leafy countryside about one hour from Paris. The logical choice would seemingly have been to join Paris Saint-Germain. But Mbappe saw better opportunities with Monaco. It’s a side known for developing young players, whereas PSG had a reputation for overlooking local talent — having missed out on Henry and Martial. Last May, Mbappe helped Monaco win the Gambardella Cup — the French Youth Cup — by scoring twice in the final against Lens: an Henrylike finish for his first goal and a brilliant strike for his second. Although Mbappe’s signature move is stepping over the ball multiple times when running at speed — a hallmark of Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo — he has outrageous trickery of his own. In the Euro under-19 final against Italy last July, he received the ball down the right flank. Feigning to go one way, he flicked the ball the other way over the Italian player’s head and then crossed it. All of this on his weaker foot. He was the tournament’s star, scoring five goals as France won. Earlier on, in a 2-0 defeat of Croatia, he scored another Henry-like goal, controlling a long pass perfectly with his right foot, then gliding around the keeper before slotting in with his left. That Monaco has managed to keep Mbappe is largely down to a strong family structure. Mbappe does not have a high-profile agent like Mino Raiola, who has Manchester United stars Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic among his elite clients. Mbappe, whose mother played professional handball and whose half-brother played striker for first division Rennes, is represented only by his Cameroonian father Wilfried.
