Original Batmobile from TV series sells for $4.2M Associated Press Writer
LOS ANGELES — The original Batmobile from the 1960s television series ‘Batman’ has sold at auction for $4.2 million. A spokeswoman for Barrett-Jackson Auction Co. says the winning bidder has not been disclosed following Saturday’s auction. The 19-foot (5.79-meter) -long black, bubbletopped car was used in the “Batman” TV show that starred Adam West as the Caped Crusader. The car’s owner — famed auto customizer George Barris, of Los Angeles — transformed a
one-of-a-kind 1955 Lincoln Futura concept car into the sleek crime-fighting machine. On the show, it boasted lasers and a “Batphone” and could lay down smoke screens and oil slicks. PARK CITY, Utah — The Eagles picked the producer of their new Showtime documentary “The History of the Eagles” — but they insist that’s about all the control they had in the making of it. “It’s really not a film that represents our point of view so much,” Glen Frey said Saturday as the quartet spoke at the Sundance Film Festival hours before the film’s premiere. The film was directed by Alison Ellwood and produced by Alex Gibney, whose other documentaries include the Academy Award-winning “Taxi to the Dark Side” and “Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room.” “The History of the Eagles” will be shown in two parts on Showtime Feb. 15-16. that was in the band’s archives, as well as recent interviews with the band. Henley said he was interested in someone making a documentary about the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers but was unimpressed with recent music documentaries. So, he asked to see the work of Oscar-winning documentary filmmakers and was led to Gibney. From there, he worked to convince Gibney that he should tell the band’s story, and they had “zero” influence on its outcome. “We have a good story to tell and I
think he’s a great storyteller,” Frey said, adding that Gibney told him, “We’re going to make a movie, and we’re going to tell the truth.” Don Henley said the band hasn’t even seen the final cut yet. “I hope we like it,” he joked. Frey said what surprised him most about the film, and seeing the old footage, was “how much fun we had.” That may surprise people who are familiar with the band’s well-documented discord, including their acrimonious breakup in 1982 (they got back together in 1994). “Most of the things that have been written about this band have focused on conflict — the journalism of conflict,” Henley said. “It sells papers and magazines, but one thing that Glen said that people will see in this documentary is that we had a lot of fun. Some of it’s not on film, and that’s good.” “The bitter fighting that the media loved to talk about really didn’t take place. We argued a lot, we discussed stuff a lot, and that tension had a lot of to do with the creative process,” Walsh said. “We didn’t hate each other; we didn’t have fist fights, none of that.” Walsh, Henley, Frey and Timothy Schmit were expected to attend the premiere later Saturday. Frey said the band might eventually make new music together. Their last album together was 2007’s “Long Road Out of Eden.”

No group has canceled their visit to Bali although the weather is bad. “Aside from dinner package, we have replaced their destination by visiting the closer ones,” said Chairman of the Association of the
Indonesia Tours and Travel Agency (ASITA) of Bali, I Ketut Ardana, to reporters recently. According to him, despite the
bad weather tourist arrivals were still on schedule. “The tourist arrivals remain on schedule. No guests have cancelled the visit,” he said. He explained that for scheduled trip guests kept on coming. However, upon arrival in tourist destination their tour was then adjusted. “Some guests also prefer to stay at hotel,” he said. Ardana argued that so far there were no tourists complaining about bad weather conditions because they generally knew about the weather in Indonesia. He added that guests were
getting ready as well. In essence, the weather did not have significant impact. Related to special dinner package, he added, it was quite popular so that tourists did not get to ask for refund because they failed to visit the scheduled tourist attractions. Chairman of the Indonesia Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) of Bali, Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardana Sukawati, said that foreign tourist visit in January had indeed decreased. “Even though December is the peak season, it is very short
and not until January. They came in the third week and returned at the end of December,” he said. In response to the decrease in tourist arrivals, hotel management could change their room rate in a matter of hours. “Now, the room rates are the same as ticket changing rapidly. As soon as there is an opportunity to take advantage, yes ... take it,” he said. He added that high season of tourist arrivals to Bali in 2013 was expected to occur from July to August. (kmb)

After about 2.5 years old, the tabah bamboo (Gigantochloa nigrociliata (Buse Kurz)) planting program undertaken by Kerta villagers in Ubud subdistrict was harvested on Saturday (Jan 19). The bamboo planted on 500 hectares of land is expected to boost the economy of local communities other than maintaining the environment. However, the harvest of bamboo shoots needed marketing. To that end, the support of the entrepreneurs in relation to the existence of the bamboo was needed. It was revealed in the prime harvest of the bamboo shoots at Kerta village. Chairman of the Biodiversity Foundation (Kehati), Sembiring, said the environmental sustainability was the responsibility of all the parties. Raising the bamboo was very appropriate because aside from preserving the environment it could also benefit economically through the support of the entrepreneurs. In addition to marketing support of the entrepreneurs to the bamboo products, it was also required a synergy between the government and community. It happened because the agricultural sector had an important role in balancing the Bali’s economy dominated by tourism sector, added the Regent of Gianyar, Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardhana Sukawati. Meanwhile, the Head of the Bamboo Farmers Group of Kerta village, Made Kerta Witarjana, said the bamboo cultivation was chosen by villagers of Kerta,
Payangan, because it had the ability to grow in the geographical condition with slightly rocky soil as at Kerta. People expected the bamboo planting could improve the soil structure so that other commodity crops could be developed, too. Economically, the bamboo shoot could be used as vegetable and its stalk could be used as raw material for handicraft or building a house. Until now, the land area prepared for the bamboo planting at Kerta village reached 500 hectares, he explained. Chairperson of the Bali Bamboo Association, Dr. Pande Ketut Diah Kencana, said the production was estimated to reach 750 tons of bamboo shoot. If processed into raw materials such as bamboo shoot vegetable, it could be sold at least for IDR 20,000 per piece to consumers. Thus, the total yield in each harvest would give revenue worth IDR15 million. Cooperation of the employers with farmers would be implemented through a cluster system and followed with an evaluation for the sustainability of the bamboo cultivation. (kmb16)

A half Ketapang Kembar temple vanishes After swept away by waves since Shivaratri, a half Ketapang Kembar temple standing at beachfront of Batu Tumpeng, Gelgel, Klungkung, vanished on Friday (Jan 18). Such ferocious waves collapsed the temple entrance, shrine and some beach almond trees. Now, the temple area of approximately 50 x 50 meters leaves a half while the remaining another shrine is at risk of being eroded. From observation at location on Friday (Jan 18) the waves were back to normal. Debris of the buildings looked to be buried in the sand. Compound wall of the temple in the east and west side also collapsed, while a
pavilion in temple area almost eroded. The only one remaining shrine was just one meter from the eroded shrine. The shrine was worried to get eroded because the foundation was only made of sand. The loss of a half the Ketapang Kembar temple became a spectacle to dozens of foreign tourists passing in front of it. They looked surprised and apprehensive why the damaged temple had not been repaired. Related to damage of the temple, the chief of temple pilgrim, Wayan Suka, organized a meeting a day after the collapse of the temple. The meeting proposed to move the temple to a safer location towards the north so that if tidal waves came they would not
hit the entrance gates. Meanwhile, the Beji or spring area in the north would be placed at one location with the temple area. However, the plan required a lot of money. Therefore, the plan could not be undertaken to restore the temple. “We’ll wait first because we have no sufficient funds to restore the temple,” he said. The Ketapang Kembar temple is supported by 60 families of devotees from Kamasan village. Apart from pilgrims from Kamasan village, this temple is visited by tens of pilgrims from Ubud and Sukawati on full moon and dark moon. They generally do purificatory rite or melukat on the beach and invoke holy water at the Beji or local spring. (kmb31)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Marine Corps officials say they will build a curriculum that would integrate mindfulnessbased techniques into their training if they see positive results from a pilot project. Mindfulness is a Buddhist-inspired concept that emphasizes active attention on the moment to keep the mind in the present. Facing a record suicide rate and thousands of veterans seeking treatment for post-traumatic stress, the military has been searching for ways to reduce strains on service members burdened with more than a decade of fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. Marine Corps officials are testing a series of brain calming exercises called “MindfulnessBased Mind Fitness Training” that they believe could enhance the performance of troops, who are under mounting pressures from long deployments and looming budget cuts expected to
slim down forces. “Some people might say these are Eastern-based religious practices but this goes way beyond that,” said Jeffery Bearor, the executive deputy of the Marine Corps training and education command at its headquarters in Quantico, Virginia. “This is not tied to any religious practice. This is about mental preparation to better handle stress.” The School Infantry-West at Camp Pendleton will offer the eight-week course starting Tuesday to about 80 Marines. The experiment builds on a 2011 study involving 160 Marines who were taught to focus their attention by concentrating on their body’s sensations, including breathing, in a period of silence. The Marines practiced the calming methods after being immersed in a mock Afghan village with screaming actors and controlled blasts to expose them to combat stress.

VEVCANI, Macedonia — The tiny Macedonian town of Vevcani boasts its own constitution, its own currency and a passport emblazoned with a golden coat of arms. They are a tongue-in-cheek expression of the village’s historical defiance of authority -- and were born of a symbolic declaration of independence. But beneath the mockery lies a real rebellious streak that has coursed through Vevcani for decades and spawned violent protests, diplomatic incidents and run-ins with the law. That spirit of rebellion reaches a climax every year during the village’s annual carnival in January, where villagers don costumes that poke fun at the world around them. The sharp satire leaves nothing untouched, targeting the national leadership, politics, religion and social issues. Most recently it has taken aim at Macedonia’s crisis-stricken southern neighbor, Greece. With its colorful floats and masked revelers, the festival -- said to be 14 centuries old and date from pagan times -- has grown in popularity over the last decade. Dozens of hectares of rice fields at Subak Puspasari, Tuwed village, Melaya subdistrict, were submerged in seawater since the past week. It occurred because a number of embankments at Taman hamlet, Tuwed, Melaya, collapsed so that seawater flooded the farmland at high tides. Even, some roads were also submerged and about 15 families were isolated. Other than rice field, the seawater also submerged a number of shrimp farm ahead of the harvest time. Consequently, many shrimps died few days before harvested. The tidal seawater made farmers at Subak Puspasari suffer a loss worth tens of millions of rupiahs whereas they just planted
the rice 3-5 days before the embankment collapsed. According to local resident, the embankment protecting the subak area collapsed on Saturday night (Jan 12). The Headman of Tuwed, Ketut Suarna, accompanied by the Head of the village consultative assembly (BPD), Ketut Toya,
justified on Thursday (Jan 17) about the collapse of the embankment used to protect the Subak Puspasari. As it collapsed, tidal seawater then inundated dozens of hectares of rice fields. Suarna added that his party with local residents was trying to deal with the problem independently, but his party also highly expected the help of Jembrana County. According to Suarna, the embankment at Taman hamlet was just repaired at the end of 2012. Robbers acted in Tabanan last Friday (18/1) early morning targeting an Indomaret minimarket at Gatut Subroto Street, Banjar Sanggulan, Banjar Anyar Village, Kediri. Robber expected to have broken down the warehouse wall including damaging an iron chain, cut cables of CCTV and telephone so no action was recorded. Around IDR 13 million were taken from a forced open safe, IDR 50,000 from the cashier till and dozens of cigarette packets. One bottled drink was drunk by robber while all equipments such as keys and screws left at the shop. A black t-shirt and a pair of gloves were also seen besides the shop. The action was known by the minimarket’s supervisor, Risda Nur Puspitasari (19) while opening the shop with other two workers. They were shocked to see that all is a mess while the safe looked like it exploded. Puspitasari closed the shop at 11 pm local itme last Thursday (17/1) and no suspicious movement was seen. The incident was then reported and investigated by police including using sniffer dogs. “We are still piling the evidences. It is expected more than one robber acted here,” PC Tonny Sugadri, Kediri Police Head, stated. It is expected as well that the robber knows well of the shop seen from what’s damaged before the robbery took place. Police have also checked the shop workers as witnesses. This action is now also added to the list of similar robberies that have taken place in Tabanan. BEIRUT - Syria’s foreign minister said on Saturday any discussion of President Bashar al-Assad’s future was “unacceptable”, a week after an international envoy said the president should not be part of a transitional government. Foreign Minister Walid alMoualem’s comments showed the government has dug in against foreign pressure for a deal with the rebels fighting to topple Assad. “No one should dare discuss the position of the president ... this is unacceptable,” he told Syrian state television in an interview. World powers have been deadlocked in their efforts to promote a transitional government they hope could prevent more bloodshed in the 22-month-old uprising against Assad, which has turned into a
civil war that has killed more than 60,000 people. United Nations and Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi, who recently visited Assad and Syrian officials, told Reuters a week ago Assad should not be part of a transitional government. Syrian officials condemned his comments and said the mediator was biased toward governments supporting the rebels. Moualem said Assad’s proposal earlier this month for a new parliament and constitution was the only
way forward out of the conflict. He reiterated the embattled leader’s argument that only “nationalistic opposition” could participate. Their definition excludes the armed opposition or any group that supports intervention in Syria’s conflict, even though they are now the driving force of the rebel movement. BERLIN — A major state election on Sunday could shake up the campaign for Germany’s national election later this year, with the center-left opposition hoping for a morale-boosting victory over Chancellor Angela Merkel’s governing coalition. Some 6.1 million people are eligible to vote for a new state legislature in Lower Saxony, which occupies a swathe of northwestern Germany. It’s been run for the past decade by a coalition of Merkel’s conservative Christian Democrats and the pro-market Free Democrats, the same parties that form the national government. The vote is a significant electoral test before national parliamentary elections in September, in which Merkel will seek a third four-year term. She and her party are riding high in polls, but the opposition hopes Lower Saxony will show she is vulnerable. Pre-election polls in the state showed a neck-and-neck race between her coalition and the opposition Social Democrats and Greens, who have been struggling to gain traction nationally. Budget woes could hurt outreach to Asia Associated Press
WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama wants Asia to be a growing focus of his foreign policy, but as his second terms begins, success could hinge on his ability to manage hot spots elsewhere in the world and avert a fiscal crisis at home. Within two weeks of winning re-election, Obama became the first U.S. president to visit Myanmar, signaling his intent to sustain his administration’s “pivot” to the region following the decadelong entanglement in Iraq and Afghanistan. That’s a reflection of Asia’s growing economic and strategic importance. In the past three years, Washington has embroiled itself in diplomacy over the disputed South China Sea, deployed more military-assets to the Asia-Pacific and pushed forward a regional trade pact. It has also put a lot of effort into managing ties with emerging rival China. Those moves have been broadly welcomed in Asia, but governments question the U.S. ability to sustain its policy. While Sen. John Kerry, the nominee to replace Hillary Rodham Clinton as secretary of state, is expected to continue the policy, the Middle East looks destined to demand the lion’s share of his attention. There’s no end in sight to the civil war in Syria and pressure could mount to take military action over Iran’s nuclear program. And it will be tough to enhance the U.S. profile in Asia in an age of austerity. In contrast to China, the U.S. can little afford more aid for its allies and to expand its military presence. But perhaps most critical to U.S. stature in the region will be how it manages its deep political divisions at home. Failure to resolve the long-running standoff between Obama and Republicans over how to manage America’s $16.4 trillion national debt weighs on global financial markets. The Republicancontrolled House is set to vote on a temporary measure next week that would permit the government to borrow more money to meet its debt obligations for about three months, although it wouldn’t tackle how to reduce the debt. Without an extension in the debt ceiling, the world’s largest economy
could default as soon as midFebruary. That would likely prompt a downgrade in the U.S. credit rating, leading to higher borrowing costs in the U.S. and elsewhere. It would alarm creditor governments, such as China and Japan, which both hold more than $1 trillion in U.S. Treasury securities. It could undermine America’s position as a safe haven for investors and trigger economic turmoil. Australia’s foreign minister, Bob Carr, warned after a last-gasp deal at the new year — staving off an immediate tax hike and budget cuts — that the massive U.S. debt has raised questions about the United States’ ability to provide world leadership. But the trusted ally put a positive spin on things: “America is one budget deal away from resolving the issue of American decline,” he said. That standoff looms large as Obama takes the oath of office in the White House for his second term Sunday, ahead of a grand swearing-in ceremony at the Capitol on Monday. Yet for all the divisiveness in Washington, Asia policy remains an area of broad agreement. Both parties have supported efforts to build stronger ties with Asia to position the U.S. to benefit from the region’s rapid economic growth: cementing alliances in South Korea and Japan, building a strategic partnership with India and expanding ties in Southeast Asia. Most notably, Republicans and Democrats have shown rare unity in backing the administration’s ambitious outreach to former pariah state Myanmar. But the Asia policy initiatives of Obama’s first term could bring with them messy responsibilities in the second term. If confirmed as secretary of state, an immediate concern for Kerry will be the rising tension in Northeast Asia, where China, Japan and South Korea all are ushering in new leaders.

Performance at all of the conglomerate’s industrial segments is improving thanks to cost cutting, a shift in strategy and growth in emerging markets. GE, based in Connecticut, reported an operating profit per share of 44 cents, a penny higher than analysts polled by FactSet expected. Perhaps more importantly for shareholders, GE’s revenue rose 4 percent to $39.3 billion and beat Wall Street expectations. Shares rose over 3 percent Friday. CEO Jeff Immelt said the outlook for developed markets remained uncertain. But China and other emerging markets, along with regions that are exploiting natural resources, are growing. Immelt has been reshaping GE, focusing on its more traditional operations, such as making complex industrial equipment and providing services to companies. GE also makes refrigerators, CT-scanners, wind turbines, gas turbines and engines for jets and trains. In a new push, it also provides equipment and services to the oil and gas industry. The company is shrinking its banking division and trimming other non-industrial operations like commercial real estate. The shift has led to higher profit margins, a trend that continued in the fourth quarter. GE reported increased profits at all seven of its industrial segments, with growth topping 10 percent at four of them — oil and gas, energy management, aviation and transportation. TABANAN - Bad weather engulfing Tabanan is starting to have an impact on food production in this region. Heavy rain and gale had harmed the paddy fields of farmers. As a result, the harvest yields diminished. As predicted, the grain yield dropped around ten percent. Possibility of the decline in grain production was justified by the Head of Tabanan Food Crops and Horticulture Agency, Nyoman Budana. According to him, the rain kept pouring could damage the quality of rice plant, not to mention the threat of disease due to bad weather. Thus, the harvest yield was ascertained to decline. “Our prediction, the grain production may decrease about ten percent of normal condition,” he said. He said the indications of damage to paddy fields were starting to be visible at a number of areas such as Penebel, Marga and Baturiti. In the three subdistricts, the rainfall was very high so that they were the most prone areas to decrease in the harvest yields as well as disease. According to Budana, his party continued to monitor the development of rice growth. This official hoped the bad weather would not last longer so that the activity of farmers could return to normal. Although predicted to decline, said Budana, it would
not have fatal impact on the high production of grain in Tabanan each year. Based on the data of the Agriculture Agency, the production of milled rice in Tabanan reached 222,184 tons per year. This amount was far above the needs of Tabanan. Despite a decrease, it was ascertained to remain surplus. The total grain production was based on the rice planting area reaching 40,914 hectares with harvest area of around 39,017 hectares. “On average, the grain production reaches 5.9 tons per hectare,” affirmed Budana. Meanwhile, the basic price of grain purchase still reached IDR 3,300 per kg. According to Budana, the price was still above the national government purchase price (HPP). Nevertheless, the official hoped that farmers could harvest their rice when it was not raining. Thus, the water content could be reduced and the price would be better. DENPASAR - The Bali provincial government has allocated Rp4 billion in subsidies for organic fertilizers in an effort to increase their use in the 10,000 hectares of farmland under rice cultivation in the province. “The amount of funds allocated from the regional budget this year is the same as last year’s,” said the head of Food Crops of Bali, Ida Bagus Wisnuwardana. He stated that the subsidy would be given to farmers groups, among others, who had been producing organic fertilizers. “Farmers groups and other producers of organic fertilizer have been selling their product at Rp 1,000 per kg,” Wisnuardana noted. “Therefore, the local government will provide a subsidy of Rp700 per kg, after which the selling price would come down to Rp300 per kg,” he continued. “That way, the price of the subsidized fertilizer would be lower than a similar fertilizer produced in another plant that sells it for Rp500 per kg,” Wisnuardana said. He stated, besides farmer groups, Bali has 22 other groups that have the permission to produce organic fertilizers. Over the past three years, local farmers groups have benefitted from the fertilizer subsidies provided by the Bali government. SOFIA, Bulgaria — Bulgarian police detained a man after he pointed a gas pistol at an ethnic Turkish party leader as he was delivering a speech at a party caucus in the capital Saturday. No shots were fired. The video from the Saturday event in Sofia shows the man climbing the podium where Ahmed Dogan, the leader of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms, was speaking, and pointing the gun to his face. Dogan struck the man before he could pull the trigger, while other delegates wrestled the assailant to the ground. TV footage showed several people punching, kicking and stomping on the man when he was on the ground. Police arrested him and took him to a hospital. It wasn’t immediately clear if he sustained serious injuries, or how he got past security to enter the hall with nearly 3,000 people attending. Eventually, the attacker was identified by police as 25-year-old Oktai Enimehmedov, a Bulgarian national
and ethnic Turk, from the coastal city of Burgas. He was carrying the gas pistol and two knives. A gas pistol is a non-lethal weapon used for selfdefense, but experts say when fired from close range it can cause lifethreatening injuries. Interior Minister Tsvevtan Tsvetanov told journalists that the assailant had a criminal record for drugs possession, robberies and hooliganism. The liberal MRF party mainly represents ethnic Turks and other Muslims in Bulgaria, who make up 12 percent of its 7.3-million population. The conference had to elect a new leader to succeed Dogan, who is one of the Balkan country’s most influential political figures. The 58-year-old has been at the helm of the party since
founding it in 1990. Lyutvi Mestan, who was expected to become the new party leader, said “the true reason for the assault was the language of hatred and confrontation.” Saturday’s assault was the gravest attack on a politician in postcommunist Bulgaria after the 1996 killing of ex-Prime Minister Andrei Lukanov. The German government’s human rights commissioner, Markus Loening, was at the party caucus in Sofia on Saturday, and witnessed the incident, the German Foreign Ministry said. “I am very happy that Ahmed Dogan was not injured,” Loening said in a statement. “Political violence must never again gain a foothold in Europe.”

Scottsdale, Arizona. The auction house did not disclose the identity of the buyer. Bush and former first lady Laura Bush used the pickup at their ranch in Crawford, Texas, where they frequently entertain friends, family and visiting dignitaries. “I haven’t driven on a street in many, many years, but I have been able to drive this truck on my ranch,” Bush said in a statement.

The buyer also received a video showing Bush autographing the airbag panel and driving around the ranch, which is about 120 miles from his Dallas home. MANILA, Philippines — An inaccurate map that mislocated a marine sanctuary may have caused a U.S. Navy minesweeper to run aground on a coral reef in the Philippines this week, the Navy said Saturday All 79 officers and crew of the USS Guardian were taken off the ship for safety reasons after it struck the reef with its bow at 2 a.m. Thursday. The Navy’s Pacific Fleet, based in Hawaii, said Saturday that its ships along with several support vessels continued to conduct salvage operations that minimize environmental effects to the reef. The Navy said in a statement that a review of Digital Nautical Charts, which are used for safe navigation by all U.S. Navy ships, found they contained inaccurate data and may have been a factor in the Guardian’s grounding. As a result, Navigator of the Navy Rear Adm. Jonathan White released precautionary guidance to all Pacific Fleet ships, saying that “initial review of navigation data indicates an error in the location of Tubbataha Reef” in the Philippines. “While the erroneous navigation chart data is important information, no one should jump to conclusions,” said Pacific Fleet spokesman Capt. Darryn James. “It is critical that the U.S. Navy conduct a comprehensive investigation that assesses all the facts surrounding the Guardian grounding.” The Avenger-class ship had just completed a port call in Subic Bay, a former American naval base west of the capital, Manila, and was en route to Indonesia and then on to East Timor to participate in a training exercise when it hit the reef, about 128 kilometers (80 miles) southeast of Palawan Island. However, Minister of Communication Mohamed Said said this would rise when final numbers were issued in the next few hours. “I am afraid unfortunately to say that the death toll will go up,” Said was quoted as saying by the official APS news agency. Details are only slowly emerging on what happened during the siege, which marked a serious escalation of unrest in northwestern Africa, where French forces are battling Islamist militants across the Sahara desert in Mali. In London, Prime Minister David Cameron said that British citizens were among the dead. “Tragically we now know that three British nationals have been killed and a further three are believed to be dead and also a further British resident is also believed to be dead,” Cameron said in a televised statement. One Briton had already was confirmed killed when the gunmen seized the hostages before dawn on Wednesday at the plant, run by Norway’s Statoil along with Britain’s BP and Algeria’s state oil company.

JAKARTA - The death toll from floods that swept through several parts of Jakarta since Tuesday reached 15 on Saturday evening, according to the National Disaster Mitigation Board (BNPB). The last dead victim was identified as Eko Herdian who worked as a cleaning service officer at the UOB Building at MH Thamrin Street, Central Jakarta, Head of the BNPB Data and Information Center Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said.
The 27-year old man was found dead by an evacuating team at 03.05 p.m. on Saturday. He said floods were still inundating several parts of the capital by Saturday evening. In Pluit, North Jakarta, the flood water reached up to 2 meters deep. A team of BNPB officers led by the agency`s chief inspected floodhit Pluit area on Saturday as part of efforts to find a solution to the flood caused by the overflowing of Pluit dam.

The Kadin official expressed hope that government would help overcome the problem soon, even if businesses had not yet decide to relocate their factories. He said that businesses were concerned as floods disturbed production activities and the distribution of goods produced by their factories. “Many employers complained of the floods which caused their employees and workers to stay off the offices and factories so that production activities are disturbed,” Sarman said. In addition, floods also delayed financial and business transactions to serve business world. Businesses therefore, hoped the central and regional governments to coordinate in coping with the flood problems in the capital city, he said. Earlier, Minister of Industry Ms Hidayat expressed hope the floods would not affect industrial areas. He recommended that, if possible, industrial activities should be done in one industrial area. “I recommended that all industrial activities should be done in one industrial area,” he said. Sebastien Loeb wins as final stages cancelled
Sebastien Loeb clinched his seventh Monte Carlo Rally victory early as the final two stages of the 2013 event were cancelled on safety grounds. Heavy rain had moved into the previously icy and snowy region as the cars were in the mid-evening service, and as the worsening conditions prompted hordes of spectators to leave the stages, local roads became badly congested. The investment seemed unwise as Sydney slumped to the bottom of the league and as Del Piero battled hamstring and other injuries. Sebastien Loeb wins as final stages cancelled
Sebastien Loeb clinched his seventh Monte Carlo Rally victory early as the final two stages of the 2013 event were cancelled on safety grounds. Heavy rain had moved into the previously icy and snowy region as the cars were in the mid-evening service, and as the worsening conditions prompted hordes of spectators to leave the stages, local roads became badly congested. The situation ultimately reached
the point where the organisers felt compelled to cancel stages 17 and 18 as the level of traffic would have made it impossible to put their action plan into place in the event of an incident. SOFIA, Bulgaria — Bulgarian police detained a man after he pointed a gas pistol at an ethnic Turkish party leader as he was delivering a speech at a party caucus in the capital Saturday. No shots were fired. The video from the Saturday event in Sofia shows the man climbing the podium where Ahmed Dogan, the leader of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms, was speaking, and pointing the gun to his face. Dogan struck the man before he could pull the trigger, while other delegates wrestled the assailant to the ground. TV footage showed several people punching, kicking and stomping on the man when he was on the ground. Police arrested him and took him to a hospital. It wasn’t immediately clear if he sustained serious injuries, or how he got past security to enter the hall with nearly 3,000 people attending. Eventually, the attacker was identified by police as 25-year-old Oktai Enimehmedov, a Bulgarian national
and ethnic Turk, from the coastal city of Burgas. He was carrying the gas pistol and two knives. MANILA, Philippines — An inaccurate map that mislocated a marine sanctuary may have caused a U.S. Navy minesweeper to run aground on a coral reef in the Philippines this week, the Navy said Saturday All 79 officers and crew of the USS Guardian were taken off the ship for safety reasons after it struck the reef with its bow at 2 a.m. Thursday. The Navy’s Pacific Fleet, based in Hawaii, said Saturday that its ships along with several support vessels continued to conduct salvage operations that minimize environmental effects to the reef. The Navy said in a statement that a review of Digital Nautical Charts, which are used for safe navigation by all U.S. Navy ships, found they contained inaccurate data and may have been a factor in the Guardian’s grounding. As a result, Navigator of the Navy Rear Adm. Jonathan White released precautionary guidance to all Pacific Fleet ships, saying that “initial review of navigation data indicates an error in the location of Tubbataha Reef” in the Philippines. “While the erroneous navigation chart data is important information, no one should jump to conclusions,” said Pacific Fleet spokesman Capt. Darryn James. “It is critical that the U.S. Navy conduct a comprehensive investigation that assesses all the facts surrounding the Guardian grounding.” The Avenger-class ship had just completed a port call in Subic Bay, a former American naval base west of the capital, Manila, and was en route to Indonesia and then on to East Timor to participate in a training exercise when it hit the reef, about 128 kilometers (80 miles) southeast of Palawan Island. In London, Prime Minister David Cameron said that British citizens were among the dead. “Tragically we now know that three British nationals have been killed and a further three are believed to be dead and also a further British resident is also believed to be dead,” Cameron said in a televised statement. The last dead victim was identified as Eko Herdian who worked as a cleaning service officer at the UOB Building at MH Thamrin Street, Central Jakarta, Head of the BNPB Data and Information Center Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said.
The 27-year old man was found dead by an evacuating team at 03.05 p.m. on Saturday. He said floods were still inundating several parts of the capital by Saturday evening. In Pluit, North Jakarta, the flood water reached up to 2 meters deep. A team of BNPB officers led by the agency`s chief inspected floodhit Pluit area on Saturday as part of efforts to find a solution to the flood caused by the overflowing of Pluit dam.

He said that businesses were concerned as floods disturbed production activities and the distribution of goods produced by their factories. “Many employers complained of the floods which caused their employees and workers to stay off the offices and factories so that production activities are disturbed,” Sarman said. In addition, floods also delayed financial and business transactions to serve business world. Businesses therefore, hoped the central and regional governments to coordinate in coping with the flood problems in the capital city, he said. Earlier, Minister of Industry Ms Hidayat expressed hope the floods would not affect industrial areas. Budget woes could hurt outreach to Asia Associated Press
WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama wants Asia to be a growing focus of his foreign policy, but as his second terms begins, success could hinge on his ability to manage hot spots elsewhere in the world and avert a fiscal crisis at home. Within two weeks of winning re-election, Obama became the first U.S. president to visit Myanmar, signaling his intent to sustain his administration’s “pivot” to the region following the decadelong entanglement in Iraq and Afghanistan. That’s a reflection of Asia’s growing economic and strategic importance. In the past three years, Washington has embroiled itself in diplomacy over the disputed South China Sea, deployed more military-assets to the Asia-Pacific and pushed forward a regional trade pact. It has also put a lot of effort into managing ties with emerging rival China. Those moves have been broadly welcomed in Asia, but governments question the U.S. ability to sustain its policy. While Sen. John Kerry, the nominee to replace Hillary Rodham Clinton as secretary of state, is expected to continue the policy, the Middle East looks destined to demand the lion’s share of his attention. There’s no end in sight to the civil war in Syria and pressure could mount to take military action over Iran’s nuclear program. And it will be tough to enhance the U.S. profile in Asia in an age of austerity. In contrast to China, the U.S. can little afford more aid for its allies and to expand its military presence. But perhaps most critical to U.S. stature in the region will be how it manages its deep political divisions at home. Failure to resolve the long-running standoff between Obama and Republicans over how to manage America’s $16.4 trillion national debt weighs on global financial markets. The Republicancontrolled House is set to vote on a temporary measure next week that would permit the government to borrow more money to meet its debt obligations for about three months, although it wouldn’t tackle how to reduce the debt. Without an extension in the debt ceiling, the world’s largest economy
could default as soon as midFebruary. That would likely prompt a downgrade in the U.S. credit rating, leading to higher borrowing costs in the U.S. and elsewhere. It would alarm creditor governments, such as China and Japan, which both hold more than $1 trillion in U.S. Treasury securities. It could undermine America’s position as a safe haven for investors and trigger economic turmoil. Australia’s foreign minister, Bob Carr, warned after a last-gasp deal at the new year — staving off an immediate tax hike and budget cuts — that the massive U.S. debt has raised questions about the United States’ ability to provide world leadership. But the trusted ally put a positive spin on things: “America is one budget deal away from resolving the issue of American decline,” he said. That standoff looms large as Obama takes the oath of office in the White House for his second term Sunday, ahead of a grand swearing-in ceremony at the Capitol on Monday. Yet for all the divisiveness in Washington, Asia policy remains an area of broad agreement. Both parties have supported efforts to build stronger ties with Asia to position the U.S. to benefit from the region’s rapid economic growth: cementing alliances in South Korea and Japan, building a strategic partnership with India and expanding ties in Southeast Asia. Most notably, Republicans and Democrats have shown rare unity in backing the administration’s ambitious outreach to former pariah state Myanmar. But the Asia policy initiatives of Obama’s first term could bring with them messy responsibilities in the second term. If confirmed as secretary of state, an immediate concern for Kerry will be the rising tension in Northeast Asia, where China, Japan and South Korea all are ushering in new leaders.

GE, based in Connecticut, reported an operating profit per share of 44 cents, a penny higher than analysts polled by FactSet expected. Perhaps more importantly for shareholders, GE’s revenue rose 4 percent to $39.3 billion and beat Wall Street expectations. Shares rose over 3 percent Friday. CEO Jeff Immelt said the outlook for developed markets remained uncertain. But China and other emerging markets, along with regions that are exploiting natural resources, are growing. Immelt has been reshaping GE, focusing on its more traditional operations, such as making complex industrial equipment and providing services to companies. GE also makes refrigerators, CT-scanners, wind turbines, gas turbines and engines for jets and trains. In a new push, it also provides equipment and services to the oil and gas industry. The company is shrinking its banking division and trimming other non-industrial operations like commercial real estate. The shift has led to higher profit margins, a trend that continued in the fourth quarter. TABANAN - Bad weather engulfing Tabanan is starting to have an impact on food production in this region. Heavy rain and gale had harmed the paddy fields of farmers. As a result, the harvest yields diminished. As predicted, the grain yield dropped around ten percent. Possibility of the decline in grain production was justified by the Head of Tabanan Food Crops and Horticulture Agency, Nyoman Budana. According to him, the rain kept pouring could damage the quality of rice plant, not to mention the threat of disease due to bad weather. Thus, the harvest yield was ascertained to decline. “Our prediction, the grain production may decrease about ten percent of normal condition,” he said. He said the indications of damage to paddy fields were starting to be visible at a number of areas such as Penebel, Marga and Baturiti. In the three subdistricts, the rainfall was very high so that they were the most prone areas to decrease in the harvest yields as well as disease. DENPASAR - The Bali provincial government has allocated Rp4 billion in subsidies for organic fertilizers in an effort to increase their use in the 10,000 hectares of farmland under rice cultivation in the province. “The amount of funds allocated from the regional budget this year is the same as last year’s,” said the head of Food Crops of Bali, Ida Bagus Wisnuwardana. He stated that the subsidy would be given to farmers groups, among others, who had been producing organic fertilizers. “Farmers groups and other producers of organic fertilizer have been selling their product at Rp 1,000 per kg,” Wisnuardana noted. “Therefore, the local government will provide a subsidy of Rp700 per kg, after which the selling price would come down to Rp300 per kg,” he continued. “That way, the price of the subsidized fertilizer would be lower than a similar fertilizer produced in another plant that sells it for Rp500 per kg,” Wisnuardana said. He stated, besides farmer groups, Bali has 22 other groups that have the permission to produce organic fertilizers. Over the past three years, local farmers groups have benefitted from the fertilizer subsidies provided by the Bali government. Even, some roads were also submerged and about 15 families were isolated. Other than rice field, the seawater also submerged a number of shrimp farm ahead of the harvest time. Consequently, many shrimps died few days before harvested. The tidal seawater made farmers at Subak Puspasari suffer a loss worth tens of millions of rupiahs whereas they just planted
the rice 3-5 days before the embankment collapsed. According to local resident, the embankment protecting the subak area collapsed on Saturday night (Jan 12). The Headman of Tuwed, Ketut Suarna, accompanied by the Head of the village consultative assembly (BPD), Ketut Toya,

Robbers acted in Tabanan last Friday (18/1) early morning targeting an Indomaret minimarket at Gatut Subroto Street, Banjar Sanggulan, Banjar Anyar Village, Kediri. Robber expected to have broken down the warehouse wall including damaging an iron chain, cut cables of CCTV and telephone so no action was recorded. Around IDR 13 million were taken from a forced open safe, IDR 50,000 from the cashier till and dozens of cigarette packets. One bottled drink was drunk by robber while all equipments such as keys and screws left at the shop. A black t-shirt and a pair of gloves were also seen besides the shop. The action was known by the minimarket’s supervisor, Risda Nur Puspitasari (19) while opening the shop with other two workers. They were shocked to see that all is a mess while the safe looked like it exploded. Puspitasari closed the shop at 11 pm local itme last Thursday (17/1) and no suspicious movement was seen. The incident was then reported and investigated by police including using sniffer dogs. “We are still piling the evidences. It is expected more than one robber acted here,” PC Tonny Sugadri, Kediri Police Head, stated. It is expected as well that the robber knows well of the shop seen from what’s damaged before the robbery took place. Police have also checked the shop workers as witnesses. This action is now also added to the list of similar robberies that have taken place in Tabanan. way forward out of the conflict. He reiterated the embattled leader’s argument that only “nationalistic opposition” could participate. Their definition excludes the armed opposition or any group that supports intervention in Syria’s conflict, even though they are now the driving force of the rebel movement. BERLIN — A major state election on Sunday could shake up the campaign for Germany’s national election later this year, with the center-left opposition hoping for a morale-boosting victory over Chancellor Angela Merkel’s governing coalition. Some 6.1 million people are eligible to vote for a new state legislature in Lower Saxony, which occupies a swathe of northwestern Germany. It’s been run for the past decade by a coalition of Merkel’s conservative Christian Democrats and the pro-market Free Democrats, the same parties that form the national government. The vote is a significant electoral test before national parliamentary elections in September, in which Merkel will seek a third four-year term. She and her party are riding high in polls, but the opposition hopes Lower Saxony will show she is vulnerable. Pre-election polls in the state showed a neck-and-neck race between her coalition and the opposition Social Democrats and Greens, who have been struggling to gain traction nationally. Much could depend on the performance of Merkel’s allies, the Free Democrats, whose support has eroded badly since they joined her national government in 2009. Marine Corps officials say they will build a curriculum that would integrate mindfulnessbased techniques into their training if they see positive results from a pilot project. Mindfulness is a Buddhist-inspired concept that emphasizes active attention on the moment to keep the mind in the present. Facing a record suicide rate and thousands of veterans seeking treatment for post-traumatic stress, the military has been searching for ways to reduce strains on service members burdened with more than a decade of fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. Marine Corps officials are testing a series of brain calming exercises called “MindfulnessBased Mind Fitness Training” that they believe could enhance the performance of troops, who are under mounting pressures from long deployments and looming budget cuts expected to
slim down forces. “Some people might say these are Eastern-based religious practices but this goes way beyond that,” said Jeffery Bearor, the executive deputy of the Marine Corps training and education command at its headquarters in Quantico, Virginia. “This is not tied to any religious practice. This is about mental preparation to better handle stress.” The School Infantry-West at Camp Pendleton will offer the eight-week course starting Tuesday to about 80 Marines. The experiment builds on a 2011 study involving 160 Marines who were taught to focus their attention by concentrating on their body’s sensations, including breathing, in a period of silence. The Marines practiced the calming methods after being immersed in a mock Afghan village with screaming actors and controlled blasts to expose them to combat stress.

VEVCANI, Macedonia — The tiny Macedonian town of Vevcani boasts its own constitution, its own currency and a passport emblazoned with a golden coat of arms. They are a tongue-in-cheek expression of the village’s historical defiance of authority -- and were born of a symbolic declaration of independence. But beneath the mockery lies a real rebellious streak that has coursed through Vevcani for decades and spawned violent protests, diplomatic incidents and run-ins with the law. After about 2.5 years old, the tabah bamboo (Gigantochloa nigrociliata (Buse Kurz)) planting program undertaken by Kerta villagers in Ubud subdistrict was harvested on Saturday (Jan 19). The bamboo planted on 500 hectares of land is expected to boost the economy of local communities other than maintaining the environment. However, the harvest of bamboo shoots needed marketing. To that end, the support of the entrepreneurs in relation to the existence of the bamboo was needed. It was revealed in the prime harvest of the bamboo shoots at Kerta village. Chairman of the Biodiversity Foundation (Kehati), Sembiring, said the environmental sustainability was the responsibility of all the parties. Raising the bamboo was very appropriate because aside from preserving the environment it could also benefit economically through the support of the entrepreneurs. In addition to marketing support of the entrepreneurs to the bamboo products, it was also required a synergy between the government and community. It happened because the agricultural sector had an important role in balancing the Bali’s economy dominated by tourism sector, added the Regent of Gianyar, Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardhana Sukawati. Meanwhile, the Head of the Bamboo Farmers Group of Kerta village, Made Kerta Witarjana, said the bamboo cultivation was chosen by villagers of Kerta,
Payangan, because it had the ability to grow in the geographical condition with slightly rocky soil as at Kerta. People expected the bamboo planting could improve the soil structure so that other commodity crops could be developed, too. Economically, the bamboo shoot could be used as vegetable and its stalk could be used as raw material for handicraft or building a house. Until now, the land area prepared for the bamboo planting at Kerta village reached 500 hectares, he explained. Chairperson of the Bali Bamboo Association, Dr. Pande Ketut Diah Kencana, said the production was estimated to reach 750 tons of bamboo shoot. If processed into raw materials such as bamboo shoot vegetable, it could be sold at least for IDR 20,000 per piece to consumers. Thus, the total yield in each harvest would give revenue worth IDR15 million. Cooperation of the employers with farmers would be implemented through a cluster system and followed with an evaluation for the sustainability of the bamboo cultivation. (kmb16)

A half Ketapang Kembar temple vanishes After swept away by waves since Shivaratri, a half Ketapang Kembar temple standing at beachfront of Batu Tumpeng, Gelgel, Klungkung, vanished on Friday (Jan 18). Such ferocious waves collapsed the temple entrance, shrine and some beach almond trees. Now, the temple area of approximately 50 x 50 meters leaves a half while the remaining another shrine is at risk of being eroded. From observation at location on Friday (Jan 18) the waves were back to normal. Debris of the buildings looked to be buried in the sand. Compound wall of the temple in the east and west side also collapsed, while a
pavilion in temple area almost eroded. The only one remaining shrine was just one meter from the eroded shrine. The shrine was worried to get eroded because the foundation was only made of sand. The loss of a half the Ketapang Kembar temple became a spectacle to dozens of foreign tourists passing in front of it. They looked surprised and apprehensive why the damaged temple had not been repaired. Related to damage of the temple, the chief of temple pilgrim, Wayan Suka, organized a meeting a day after the collapse of the temple. The meeting proposed to move the temple to a safer location towards the north so that if tidal waves came they would not
hit the entrance gates. Meanwhile, the Beji or spring area in the north would be placed at one location with the temple area. However, the plan required a lot of money. Therefore, the plan could not be undertaken to restore the temple. “We’ll wait first because we have no sufficient funds to restore the temple,” he said. The Ketapang Kembar temple is supported by 60 families of devotees from Kamasan village. Apart from pilgrims from Kamasan village, this temple is visited by tens of pilgrims from Ubud and Sukawati on full moon and dark moon. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Original Batmobile from TV series sells for $4.2M Associated Press Writer
LOS ANGELES — The original Batmobile from the 1960s television series ‘Batman’ has sold at auction for $4.2 million. A spokeswoman for Barrett-Jackson Auction Co. says the winning bidder has not been disclosed following Saturday’s auction. The 19-foot (5.79-meter) -long black, bubbletopped car was used in the “Batman” TV show that starred Adam West as the Caped Crusader. The car’s owner — famed auto customizer George Barris, of Los Angeles — transformed a
one-of-a-kind 1955 Lincoln Futura concept car into the sleek crime-fighting machine. On the show, it boasted lasers and a “Batphone” and could lay down smoke screens and oil slicks. PARK CITY, Utah — The Eagles picked the producer of their new Showtime documentary “The History of the Eagles” — but they insist that’s about all the control they had in the making of it. that was in the band’s archives, as well as recent interviews with the band. Henley said he was interested in someone making a documentary about the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers but was unimpressed with recent music documentaries. So, he asked to see the work of Oscar-winning documentary filmmakers and was led to Gibney. From there, he worked to convince Gibney that he should tell the band’s story, and they had “zero” influence on its outcome. “We have a good story to tell and I
think he’s a great storyteller,” Frey said, adding that Gibney told him, “We’re going to make a movie, and we’re going to tell the truth.” Don Henley said the band hasn’t even seen the final cut yet. “I hope we like it,” he joked. Frey said what surprised him most about the film, and seeing the old footage, was “how much fun we had.” That may surprise people who are familiar with the band’s well-documented discord, including their acrimonious breakup in 1982 (they got back together in 1994). “Most of the things that have been written about this band have focused on conflict — the journalism of conflict,” Henley said. “It sells papers and magazines, but one thing that Glen said that people will see in this documentary is that we had a lot of fun. Some of it’s not on film, and that’s good.” “The bitter fighting that the media loved to talk about really didn’t take place. We argued a lot, we discussed stuff a lot, and that tension had a lot of to do with the creative process,” Walsh said. “We didn’t hate each other; we didn’t have fist fights, none of that.” Walsh, Henley, Frey and Timothy Schmit were expected to attend the premiere later Saturday. Frey said the band might eventually make new music together. Their last album together was 2007’s “Long Road Out of Eden.”

A number of travel agencies in Bali even admitted to change their destination visit with a special dinner package to deal with adverse weather condition. Similarly, the tourist arrival is normal as scheduled. No group has canceled their visit to Bali although the weather is bad. “Aside from dinner package, we have replaced their destination by visiting the closer ones,” said Chairman of the Association of the
Indonesia Tours and Travel Agency (ASITA) of Bali, I Ketut Ardana, to reporters recently. According to him, despite the
bad weather tourist arrivals were still on schedule. “The tourist arrivals remain on schedule. No guests have cancelled the visit,” he said. He explained that for scheduled trip guests kept on coming. However, upon arrival in tourist destination their tour was then adjusted. “Some guests also prefer to stay at hotel,” he said. Ardana argued that so far there were no tourists complaining about bad weather conditions because they generally knew about the weather in Indonesia. He added that guests were
getting ready as well. In essence, the weather did not have significant impact. Related to special dinner package, he added, it was quite popular so that tourists did not get to ask for refund because they failed to visit the scheduled tourist attractions. Chairman of the Indonesia Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) of Bali, Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardana Sukawati, said that foreign tourist visit in January had indeed decreased. “Even though December is the peak season, it is very short
and not until January. They came in the third week and returned at the end of December,” he said. In response to the decrease in tourist arrivals, hotel management could change their room rate in a matter of hours. “Now, the room rates are the same as ticket changing rapidly. As soon as there is an opportunity to take advantage, yes ... take it,” he said. He added that high season of tourist arrivals to Bali in 2013 was expected to occur from July to August. (kmb)
