Male artists win big but female singers dominate American Music Awards stage

LOS ANGELES, Nov 19 (Reuters) - Pink, Lady Gaga and Christina Aguilera led female artists of pop music dominating the American Music Awards stage on Sunday with powerful performances, despite being edged out by male artists in most award categories this year.

Bruno Mars won Artist of the Year, former One Direction member Niall Horan won New Artist of the Year and Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi, Justin Bieber and Daddy Yankee won Collaboration of the Year for the catchy “Despacito.” The women of pop delivered the night’s biggest moments. Pink and Kelly Clarkson sang REM’s “Everybody Hurts,” dedicated to first responders and victims of the recent hurricanes and wildfires that have ravaged parts of the United States. Pink later performed aerial acrobatics from a highrise building while singing “Beautiful Trauma.” Lady Gaga performed “The Cure” from the Washington D.C. stop of her tour, playing on a Perspex piano and then dancing as sparks rained down on stage. She won favorite female pop/rock artist.

“Just remember that if you feel different or not understood, don’t you dare give up on who you are, fight like hell for what you believe in,” Lady Gaga said. Motown superstar Diana Ross received this year’s lifetime achievement award with video tributes from Barack and Michelle Obama and Taylor Swift. Ross performed a medley of her hits including “I’m Coming Out,” “Take Me Higher” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.” “I feel so humbled by this,” Ross said, surrounded by her family on stage. The fan-voted American Music Awards show, televised on ABC, features performances from pop music’s biggest names. Actress Viola Davis paid tribute to the late Whitney Houston and the 25th anniversary of Houston’s film “The Bodyguard,” as Christina Aguilera belted a medley of hits from the film. Houston died in 2012 aged 48 after drowning in a hotel bathtub. Demi Lovato, who was accompanied by newlyelected Virginia legislator Danica Roem, the first openly transgender person to win a state legislative seat, performed her latest hit “Sorry/Not Sorry.” (rtr)

Release of Indian film about Rajput queen delayed after protests

NEW DELHI - The producers of “Padmavati” - a Bollywood movie based on an epic poem about a Rajput queen, said on Sunday they had indefinitely delayed the release of the film, which has been accused of distorting history and has sparked protests. The movie, which was due to go on release in India on Dec. 1, has led to protests in Rajasthan, Maharashtra and other states. It has also faced a delays in approval from the Indian censor board. The studio behind the movie, Viacom 18 - a joint venture between Viacom Inc and Network 18 owned by Reliance Industries, said on Sunday it had “voluntarily deferred the release date of the film.” “We have faith that we will soon obtain the requisite clearances to release the film. We will announce the revised release date of the film in due course,” the company said

in a statement. The film ran into trouble earlier this year when a Rajput caste organisation, the Rajput Karni Sena, attacked director Sanjay Leela Bhansali on the set in Rajasthan in January. The Sena, based in Rajasthan, has been critical of the film, saying it would offend the Rajput community, and that Bhansali was deliberately distorting history. Based on an epic poem by Malik Muhammad Jayasi, the film tells the story of Padmavati, the queen of the Rajput warrior clan and Mughal conqueror Alaudin Khilji. India’s most populous state, Uttar Pradesh, ruled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party had also warned the federal government that there would be law and order problems in Uttar Pradesh if the film was released. Indonesia parliament speaker taken into custody by anti-graft agency

JAKARTA - Indonesia’s parliament speaker, Setya Novanto, has been taken into custody by the anti-corruption agency after being arrested over his alleged role in causing state losses of $170 million linked to a national electronic identity card scheme. Novanto, clad in an orange vest worn by detainees of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), was transferred from a hospital on Sunday night into a KPK detention facility. He is one of the most senior politicians to be detained by the agency, popular among ordinary Indonesians for targeting members of the establishment suspected of abuse of power. Novanto was arrested on Friday night but his detention was postponed while he received treatment for injuries suffered in a car crash the day before. “Delay of the arrest is no longer needed,” as a medical statement

showed Novanto did not need further hospital treatment, Laode Muhammad Syarif, the deputy head of the agency, said in a video on its official Periscope page. On Sunday night, Novanto told reporters he was still suffering from vertigo after the crash that he said had injured a leg, an arm and his head. “I thought I would be given time for recovery, but I obey the law,” Novanto was quoted by news

Kusamba fishermen loose hope of next generation continuing this trade

The professsion of fisherman can no longer promise a life of prosperity to people living in coastal communities like Kusamba village in Dawan, Klungkung. Because it has become increasingly difficult to make a living as a fisherman, young people are unwilling to learn this trade, so this may be the last generation of fishermen in Kusamba. It is 10:00 in the morning and 45 year old Nengah Suryata sits under a hibiscus tree on the beach to avoid the stinging heat of the sun. He gazes out to sea watching the waves lapping the shore. This has become a common activity for Suryata over the last few weeks as he fights the boredom brought on by lack of fish to catch. In fact this has become an annual occurrence that Surayata has grown used to in recent years, teaching him to be patient. This father of three children shared his stories of life as a fisherman over the years. For about ten years, Suryata and hundreds of his fellow villagers all worked as fishermen. They would go out to sea en mass and when the catches were few they would be frustrated. But as time went on these sharing of joys and hardships faded as one by one the fishermen stopped going out to sea. Health Agency declares all villages in Denpasar to be endemic to dengue

DENPASAR —IN this transitional period from the dry season to the rainy season, dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) is becoming more widespread. All related parties are therefor expected to step up efforts to prevent the transmission of this disease by mosquito bite. Moreover, all villages in Denpasar are still declared to be endemic to DHF, although there has been a decrease in the number of cases in 2017 when compared to the same period in 2016. Head of the Denpasar Health Agency, Luh Putu Sri Armini, on Sunday (Nov. 19) explained that the results of their evaluation of dengue cases from January to October 2017 showed there are 910 cases or with an incidence rate (IR) of 99.53 per 100,000 populations. This number showed a decreased when compared to the same period in 2016. At that time, there were 2,339 cases with IR of 356.20 per 100,000 populations. The case fatality rate (CFR) for 2016 was reached 0.72 percent with a total of 17 dengue caused deaths. Of all the sub-districts in Denpasar, West Denpasar still shows the largest number of cases of dengue. This year there have already been 338 cases showing an incidence rate of 127.79 per 100,000 people. There was also one death caused by dengue in West Denpasar. South Denpasar had 285 cases, East Denpasar (162 cases) with the lowest number of cases being in North Denpasar (125 cases). Given the relatively large number of cases of dengue in Denpasar, Mayor I.B. Rai Dharmawijaya Mantra said that he hopes the public can improve the effectiveness of larva monitoring officers in every hamlet. The municipal government also plans to design a ‘smart larva monitoring officer system’ to maximize the prevention and minimize the number of dengue cases. He said that so far there are 44,173 independent larva monitoring officers, equivalent to 10 percent of the population of the City of Denpasar. “If their work can be improved, I am confident that we can bring down the number of cases of dengue even more”, said Rai Mantra. Dengue, added Mayor Mantra has become a national problem with many people affected. This makes urban populations uneasy – including people in Denpasar. In fact dengue is considered endemic to Denpasar as there have been cases reported for three years in a row. It is therefore necessary to increase public awareness and to take preventative measures early on to prevent outbreaks from occurring. (kmb12)

Young people want work that is more promising and prestigious. “We are the last generation who are still fishing, the young people no longer want to”, he said woefully. This is different than when he was young. By the time Nengah was 15 he was already going out to sea, sailing against shocking waves that were sometimes quite fierce. Departing at 3:00 and returning at 9:00 provided his daily bread and butter. “Today it is not like that for my kids, they never want to go out to sea”, said

It is an impressive sight and visitors watch carefully as 46 year Nengah Mandri works the nets he used to struggle with at sea with Suryata. “I stopped fishing in 2002”, he says. With all the uncertainty involved in fishing, including things like tidal waves, Mandri decided to search for another source of livelihood. Today he repairs fishing nets for other fishermen. For a large net, he can earn IDR 500,000 for repairs that take anywhere from 5 to 7 days. He also squeezes out a few rupiah working as a porter for passengers travelling to Nusa Penida. He makes about IDR 100, 000 a day loading goods onto these small boats. “This is work I can do every day and the results are more certain and no preparations are needed”, explained this ex-fisherman. Increase in number of Indonesians travelling abroad

Reverse migration? Pollution in India’s cities draws residents back to rural life

MUMBAI - Namita Singh’s young daughter suffered from bronchitis when the family lived in the northern Indian city of Lucknow, where fumes from clogged traffic and a smoky haze every winter outweighed the charms of its Mughal architecture and famed cuisine. When her husband was transferred to the town of Dehradun, in the foothills of the Himalayas, her daughter recovered in the clean mountain air. So when her husband’s job took him to Delhi a couple of years later, the choice was clear: Singh and her daughter remained in Dehradun, while he moved to the capital. As a toxic smog enveloped Delhi and northern parts of India, forcing emergency measures, Singh said she was relieved not to be living there. “I cannot think of living in Delhi, with the pollution so bad,” said Singh, whose husband visits every two weeks. “My daughter is so much better here in the cleaner air. We cannot think of moving back to that pollution,” she told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. Pollution levels climbed to 12 times above the recommended limit this week in New Delhi. Officials said they knew what was needed to control the haze, but nothing would be done, at least this year. City pollution has triggered a reverse migration trend in India from the city to the countryside. While it is a mere trickle com-

pared to the inexorable rural to urban flow, some high-profile moves have made the news in recent years, such as the departure of Costa Rica’s ambassador to southern India because Delhi’s air had made her sick. At least 2.5 million people in India died early because of pollution in 2015, more than any other country in the world, according to a study by the Lancet Commission on Pollution and Health. In New Delhi - now the most polluted city in the world, according to the Brookings Institute - illegal crop burning in areas near the capital, as well as vehicle exhaust and construction dust are blamed for the smog that descends in cooler weather every year. The city, home to more than 20 million people, has become a “gas chamber”, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said. ‘HARDSHIP’ POSTING As sales of face masks rose and chatter about air purifiers filled internet chat rooms, others took more concrete action: they moved to smaller cities on the coast or the mountains. So where can you run away to?” she said. “Our template for urbanisation needs changing.” Tens of thousands of people living in rural areas migrate to the cities every day, seeking better economic opportunities. Many end up in slums and informal settlements, and are particularly vulnerable to the pollution. Some of those who can are heading in the opposite direction. stepped down four years ago, and said he was moving to the mountain state of Uttarakhand for a cleaner, quieter life. Even those who have recently moved to the cities are taking stock of their decisions. Vinod Kumar, who moved from a village in southern Tamil Nadu to Chennai city to be a driver, said he planned to return to his village and take up organic farming on the family land. “It’s only now that I realise how lucky we were in the village to have clean air and clean water, and not be ill from pollution all the time,” he said. MANGUPURA — The number of Indonesians who travelled abroad (outbound travelers) increased by about 7 million last year. Thus figure is much lower than the number of Indonesians travelling within the archipelago. The benefit of intensively promoting tourism in Indonesia will be greatly reduced if it is only foreign tourists who are attracted to visit Indonesia and not domestic tourists. Indonesians travelling abroad cannot be avoided, however and in fact tourism in the Asia-Pacific region is growing fast. Indonesia is not only a destination but also a target market. “ Indonesia, India and Japan serve as potential markets for tourism to other places. Korea and Japan are attracting increasing numbers of Indonesian tourists”, said Prof. I Gde Pitana, Deputy of Overseas Tourism Marketing Development, Ministry of Tourism, on Friday (Nov. 17) during a seminar entitled Indonesia Tourism Outlook 2018 held at Ayodya Resort Nusa Dua, Bali. In order to prevent too many Indonesians from visiting other countries, Pitana’s division is looking to develop local destinations that appeal to the needs of the local tourism market. “ For example who visits Malang? Who visits the new tourist destinations in Western or Southern Sumatra? It is mostly Indonesian tourists”, he said. Man domestic tourists prefer to travel abroad rather than in country as it can actually be cheaper. Flying to Singapore for example is cheaper than fling to Eastern Indonesia. “ It costs about IDR 8 million to fly form Bali to Raja Ampat, wheras it only costs IDR 4 million to fly to Singapore”, admitted Pitana. Improvement to infrastructure are thereof needed in order to boost local tourism in the future, he said adding that Indonesian destinations also need to be improved so that they can stand up to the competition of other countries. Vietnam for example is emerging as a new tourist destination that is even using the tagline “the New Bali”, offering patterned destinations like Nusa Dua. “We need to be innovative and creative”, he said. As economic observer, Faisal Basri said during the same seminar, although there were 7 million Indonesian travelling abroad last year, there are still larger numbers of foreign tourists coming to Indonesia. “ I am still worried about the increasing number of outbound travellers though”, said Basri. Travel fairs organized by airline companies actually caused many domestic tourists to travel overseas. According to recent studies, in the next two years, Indonesians are going to travel further for longer periods of time and shop more while they are abroad. Basri therefor hopes to see a focus not just on increasing the number of foreign tourists who visit Indonesia (presently targeted to reach 20 million per year), but also on per capita spending. “ Next year, we have ot get more Europeans, American and Japanese tourists to visit, because they are higher quality tourists”, concluded Basri. Town of Bangli floods again after few hours of heavy rain BANGLI — The streets of Bangli were flooded again after a few hours of torrential downpour on Sunday (Nov. 19). As a result of the flooding many motorists had to stop moving and south of SMAN 1 Bangli, on Jalan Ngurah Rai, local residents had to install an emergency embankment to prevent their homes from being flooded. Rain fell heavily on Bangli from about 13:00- until 15:30 causing the drainage channel south of SMAN I Bangli to overflow up to 20 centimeters onto the road. The overflowing water carried all manner of garbage with it littering the streets of Bangli with plastic trash. One local resident name Gede Imbawan, said the water had overflowed because the drainage channels in the Town of Bangli do not work properly and large amounts of garbage in the channels compounds the problem. “This happens every time there is heavy rain”, he said,

adding that this recent incident was nothing compared to the flooding that has happened in the past when many people’s homes were inundated. Naturally,Imbhawan and other local residents hope that the drainage channels can be improved as soon as possible. He also mentioned that the garbage in the drainage channels needs to be removed immediately so as to prevent such flooding when it rains hard. People living near the Bangli District Court office expressed similar hopes explaining that they had to make emergency embankments made of sand bags outside their front doors on Sunday to prevent water from flowing into their homes as it has in the past. Meanwhile, Commander of the 1626/Bangli Military District, Suka Prajaka, said that they too had to take action to prevent their office from becoming flooded. (kmb40)

Headman of Wanagiri, Wayan Gumiasa, said on Friday (Nov. 17) that many of the waterfalls were accidentally discovered after the central government program launched their village forest management (HPHD) program. Small pathways to these waterfalls were gradually mae without cutting down any trees in

the village forest. Not al of the waterfalls have paths to them however so many remain untouched as there are no community groups ready to manage them. “There is no problem with making pathways to the waterfalls, and no trees need to be cut down. The problem is that we do not have enough community groups to develop the waterfalls as attractions. Therefor, so far only the three waterfall sare being managed. Even though this is being doen in a very simple manner, we have still managed to attract visitors”, explained Gumiasa. Gumiasa added that he hopes that the Bulelelng Tourism Office or other third parties can help to develop the potential of these natural attractions. Topographically Wanagiri village is located in the tourist area of Bedugul that is crowded with local and foreign tourists every day. So, I fhtese waterfall attractions are developed they are quite likely to draw visitors. Gumiasa also said that he is confident that with the involvement of related agencies and third parties, these natural tourist attractions can have positive impact on the village’S economy. “There is no problem with road access because with the HPHD permit the village has been given the right to manage the village and can prepare pathways. WELLINGTON - New Zealand and Australian officials have begun talks about screening processes for asylum seekers who have shut themselves inside a Papua New Guinea detention centre, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said on Monday. Australia has been refusing New Zealand’s offer to take up to 150 of the detainees from the Australianrun camp on Manus Island, but Ardern’s comments have raised speculation that Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is ready to accept the offer. The centre was closed almost three weeks ago after PNG’s High Court ruled it was illegal, but more than 400 detainees have refused to leave, citing concerns for their security if they were moved to transit centres, as planned. Turnbull has been refusing New Zealand’s offer to take some of the men, because he is worried that asylum seekers would view it as a “back door” to Australia, undermining the country’s tough immigration policies. MAR DEL PLATA - A storm on Sunday complicated efforts to find an Argentine navy submarine missing in the South Atlantic with 44 crew members, while satellite calls thought to come from the vessel did not help searchers identify the vessel’s location.

The defense ministry has said the ARA San Juan appeared to try to make contact through seven failed satellite calls on Saturday between late morning and early afternoon. The vessel was 432 km (268 miles) off Argentina’s coast when its location was last known early on Wednesday. As waves of up to 8 meters (20 feet) and winds reaching 40 knots complicated the search by sea, authorities spent Sunday trying to trace the submarine’s location through data from the satellite calls without significant progress, a navy official told reporters. “We analyzed these signals, which as we know were intermittent and weak,” said Gabriel Galeazzi, a naval commander. “They could not help determine a point on the map to help the search.” U.S. satellite communications company Iridium Communications Inc, which was brought in to help analyze the calls, said they did not originate with its device aboard the vessel and may have been from another satellite communications company’s equipment. It said the last call it detected from its device was on Wednesday, the same day the government said the vessel vanished. More than a dozen boats and aircraft from Argentina, the United States, Britain, Chile and Brazil had joined the effort. Authorities have mainly been scanning the sea from above as the storm made the search difficult for boats, navy Admiral Gabriel Gonzalez told reporters. “Unfortunately these conditions are expected to remain for the next 48 hours,” Gonzalez said from the Mar del Plata naval base, about 420 km (240 miles) south of Buenos Aires where the submarine had been heading toward before vanishing. Opioid crisis cost U.S. economy $504 billion in 2015: White House WASHINGTON - Opioid drug abuse, which has ravaged parts of the United States in recent years, cost the economy as much as $504 billion in 2015, White House economists said in a report made public on Sunday. The White House Council of Economic Advisers (CEA) said the toll from the opioid crisis represented 2.8 percent of gross domestic product that year. President Donald Trump last month declared the opioid crisis a public health emergency. While Republican lawmakers said that was an important step in fighting opioid abuse, some critics, including Democrats, said the move was meaningless without additional funding. The report could be used by the Trump White House to urge Republicans in Congress - who historically have opposed increasing government spending - to provide more funding for fighting the opioid crisis by arguing that the economic losses far outweigh the cost of additional government funding. Using a combination of statistical models, the CEA said the lost economic output stemming from 33,000 opioid-related deaths in 2015 could be between $221 billion

In addition, the report looked at the cost of non-fatal opioid usage, estimating a total of $72 billion for 2.4 million people with opioid addictions in 2015. Art has always been produced in the context of a given era and the particular conditions that the artist finds themselves in. Whether an artists chooses to produce art which specifically references this era and conditions or whether they choose to focus on more general ideas or even their own feelings and perceptions, the era in which they make their art nonetheless informs their art. Such referencing has become highly conceptualized - some say to the determent of the artistry of art. As art writer and curator Rain Rosidi explains in the catalogue of the Dari Masa ka Rasa exhibition , modern art was born out of a reaction to the Romantic movement that placed man at the centre of the universe and emphasized imaginary settings and personal feelings with little regard for or reference to tthe world around them. Their technical mastery yielded highly realist landscapes and figures yet remained devoid of any commentary on these subjects., which according to critics is the primary task of the artist- to share their perception of conditions and context. Whereas fine art is fundamentally based on a mastery of technic, as modern art sought to develop more critical approaches to art production this eventually led to contemporary art that increasingly moved so far into the conceptual that techique and aesthetic beauty were often abandoned altogether. In reaction such extreme conditions in the art world, artists Agung Tato (Surabaya), Angga Sukma Permana (Yogyakarta), Agustan (Jakarta), M. Muhlis Lugis (Makasar), and Made Ddwi Kenak Adyana

(Bali) have come together to restore balance. The five artists that make up art collective ‘Segitiga’ first joined forces on the campus of ISI Yogyakarta where they were studying for their masters degrees in FIne Arts. Their lengthly and ongoing verbal and graphic exchanges at that time -which naturally were informed by the theoretical basis of their studies, led them to a shared desire to comment on the current conditions of contemporary art in Indonesia through their art works. Although each artist came to the table with a different background, style and method, they shared a vision of creating art works that combined critical, conceptual, technical and aesthetic elements, without any of these elements being at the expense of the other. Humanity has seen various changes in the conditions in which we live and thus our perception of the world and the place of art. From the cave paintings of early man to the highly conceptual art works in vogue today, art is constantly developing according to the era in which artists live, said Rosidi. It is up to the artist to share their perception of such conditions, which can be done in myriad ways as witnessed by the variety of technics, subject matter and concepts expressed by the five artists in this exhibition. As Art Writer I Made Susanta Dwitanya eloquently put it in his introductory words of the exhibition catalogue, the title Dari Masa ka Rasa (from era to feeling), can be interpreted as a reference to the personal journey of these five artist from the era or time and space of

their formal studies to the feelings they shared with one and other informally on campus. It can also be read as a reference to ‘era’ as the natural cycles of nature from day to night and season to season that delineate time in space to the personal journey of humans through these cycles of their own personal life. Or, further still the exhibition title ‘from era to feelings’ can be interpreted as a commentary on Indonesia Contemporary Art, with these five artists serving as representatives of the journey

from the ‘era’ of formal or theoretical conceptual explorations of art, to the personal sharing they have been engaged in which led them to more technique-based, personal and critical explorations of their artistic expression. Perhaps more generally ‘from era to feeling’ can be read as an invitation for all humans to move into their heart space so as to choose a more wholistic approach to contemporary conditions so as to find solutions to the challenges we all face. All five artist show clear technical mastery of the art of painting and although each artist expresses this mastery in their own unique personal style, they also each express a particular vision or commentary on present conditions, whether political, environmental or aesthetic, Despite the strong emphasis on technique and commentary, the basis on which art is founded - aesthetic beauty as an expression of intangible feelings remains a distinct feature in all the art works of ‘Dari Masa ka Rasa’ which is on display at Griya Santrian Gallery, Sanur (Jalan Danau Tamblingan, Sanur) until December 31rst, 2017. It is also worth noting that this is the last exhibition of Griya Santrian Gallery’s 15th year running. This gallery, that has provided a space for Balinese contemporary art to become better known to the public for 15 years, deliberately chose to have their end of year exhibition feature artists from all over Indonesia. Although this is not the first time that artists from outside Bali have exhibited in this space, this particular exhibition speaks to the increasingly dynamic range of Balinese contemporary art and the national art context that is informed by and which informs art in Bali. Dari Masa Ka Rasa shows a promising start to a new era for Griya Santrian Gallery for its next 15 years, and perhaps for contemporary Indonesia art in general, which may start to embrace both feeling and critical commentary again as a valuable component of the nations art. The opening of the ninth Jogja International Heritage Walk was conducted in Yogyakarta on Nov. 18. This was an event that combined walking and cultural activities A total of 7,500 people, 285 of them were overseas tourists took part in the main event that was held on Nov. 19. These international tourists came from countries such as Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France, Austria, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Russia, China, Taiwan, the United States and Canada. Additionally, Indonesia is the only ASEAN country that is listed as a member of the International Marching League (IML). Jogja Heritage Walk was divided into three categories: five kilometers, 10 kilometers and 20 kilometers. Participants had to walk past several temples such as Kedulan, Sari, Sambisari and Prambanan as well as other tourist sites like Silik Bridge in Karantengah Hamlet, Kedungmiri, Sriharjo and Oya Bridge. The event also had other supporting activities namely Family Fun Walk, Coloring and Umbrella Painting competitions and an educational trip by the Medang Heritage Society and Hompimpa Kampung Dolanan Anak. Yogyakarta Governor Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X said that the event does not only promoted a healthy lifestyle but also encouraged interaction between people from different backgrounds and helped in strengthening the tourism sector in Yogyakarta. “We hope that this [event] can become one of the tourist events and bring in more tourists to increase the country’s foreign exchange,” told Sri Sultan.(rtr)

Freeport evacuating Indonesian mine worker families after shootings

TIMIKA - U.S. miner Freeport-McMoRan Inc is evacuating spouses and children of workers from its giant Indonesian copper mine after a string of shootings in the area raised security concerns. The move follows efforts by Indonesian authorities on Friday to evacuate villages near Freeport’s Grasberg mine in the eastern province of Papua that authorities said had been occupied by armed separatists. Since August at least 12 people have been injured and two police officers have been killed by gunmen with suspected links to separatist rebels. Freeport has asked family and household members of its employees to prepare over the weekend for a temporary relocation from the mining town of Tembagapura, about 10 km (6.2 miles) from Grasberg, company sources said. Workers have been asked to stay behind and maintain their work schedule, they said. Details of the evacuation or

the number of people impacted were not immediately clear. Shots were fired at a light vehicle and two large mining trucks were set on fire at Grasberg on Saturday, one of the sources said. The sources declined to be named as they were not authorised to talk to the media. Freeport in a statement on Saturday confirmed the evacuation plan and said it will be carried out immediately. “We are working closely with government and law enforcement to ensure the safety

Alonso turns rookie for endurance test with Toyota

BAHRAIN - Double Formula One world champion Fernando Alonso turned rookie for a day on Sunday when he tried out Toyota’s world endurance championship car in a test that could lead to a Le Mans 24 Hours entry next year. The 36-year-old McLaren driver completed 113 laps of the Bahrain International Circuit in the TS050 hybrid for a total distance of 611km. The end-of-season test came a day after Toyota won the Six Hours of Bahrain race at the track. “It was a great day. Testing an LMP1 (Le Mans top tier) car is always a nice thing for any racing driver because these cars are amazing to drive,” Alonso said in a Toyota statement. “They are very consistent throughout a stint which is a positive thing. The 26-year-old recovered from losing his opening two service games to finally get the better of the willowy Belgian player, but it was fiercely-fought twoand-a-half hour duel with Goffin saving four match points before finally succumbing. Dimitrov’s unbeaten run this week in London earned him $2.5 million while the 1,500 ranking points have catapulted him to end an impressive year ranked third in the world -- behind only all-time greats Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. More significantly perhaps, landing the unofficial “fifth” grand slam appears to be proof that the former junior Wimbledon champion, once dubbed ‘Baby Federer’ because of his easy-on-the-eye style, has finally come of age. “It’s been an amazing week for me,” Dimitrov said on court after becoming the first player to win the elite eight-man tournament on his first appearance in the event since Spaniard Alex Corretja beat countryman Carlos Moya in 1998. “It’s such an honour to be here and this week has been one of the best weeks I’ve ever had.” He was still on court nearly an hour after the match ended, signing autographs for the sizeable Bulgarian contingent who had roared their man to victory. Yet it was tough on Goffin who, like Dimitrov, was his country’s first qualifier for the ATP Finals. His substantial consolation, though, was to end the year at a career-high seventh, having become only the sixth man to beat Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer in the same tournament. He will need to recover fast from the two hour 30

minute final -- the longest since the event adopted a three-set format -- as a Davis Cup final looms in France next weekend. Many of the capacity crowd in the O2 Arena had doubtless booked their tickets in anticipation of watching the top two seeds Federer and Nadal go head-tohead but the two newcomers provided a fitting end to an extraordinary ATP season. Goffin managed only two games against Dimitrov when they met on Wednesday in group play but recovered to beat Dominic Thiem to reach the semis where he stunned six-times champion Federer. For Dimitrov, he was quickly a different proposition in the final, using his pinpoint accuracy to keep his gifted opponent under control and he was way ahead on the winner count as he moved 4-3 ahead. A double-fault at 30-30 followed by a wayward forehand, though, gifted Dimitrov a break and seemed to energise the Bulgarian. Dimitrov began to assert himself and piled on the pressure when Goffin served at 5-6. Goffin saved four set points, two with forehand winners, but doublefaulted on a game point of his own before Dimitrov forced an error to wrap up the opener. Goffin needed just one break of serve to take the match into a decider and looked the more likely winner for a while but when Dimitrov survived a 10-minute service game at the start of the third, saving four break points, it proved crucial. With Goffin beginning to tire, Dimitrov moved 5-2 ahead with a break and then went 0-40 ahead on Goffin’s serve. Somehow Goffin survived to extend the contest to another game and saved another match point on the Bulgarian’s serve. He looked poised to save another one as he stretched Dimitrov all over the court but with the court at his mercy he put an attempted drop-volley into the net. (rtr)
