Woman accuses U.S. Senator Al Franken of unwanted groping, kiss
WASHINGTON - A radio broadcaster accused U.S. Senator Al Franken on Thursday of touching her breasts while she slept and forcing a kiss on her in 2006 when he was still a comedian and the two were preparing to perform before U.S. troops in the Middle East. Anchor Leeann Tweeden related her experience in a first-person account on the website of Los Angeles station KABC amid outrage over numerous reports of sexual misconduct by powerful men from Hollywood to Capitol Hill. Tweeden said Franken wrote a skit that included a kiss between the two and said he insisted upon rehearsing it, which she at first resisted. “He repeated that actors really need to rehearse everything and that we must practice the kiss. I said ‘OK’ so he would stop badgering me,” she wrote. “We did the line leading up to the kiss and then he came at me, put his hand on the back of my head, mashed his lips against mine and aggressively stuck his tongue in my mouth.” She said she pushed Franken away but felt disgusted and violated. Reuters was unable to independently verify Tweeden’s account. Tweeden also said Franken groped her while she slept during their flight home on a military plane. “I felt violated all over again. Embarrassed. Belittled. Humiliated,” Tweeden wrote. “How dare anyone grab my breasts like this and think it’s funny?” She posted a photo someone had taken of Franken mugging for a photo with his hands on the flak jacket that covered her breasts. “I certainly don’t remember the rehearsal for the skit in the same way, but I send my sincerest apologies to Leeann. As to the photo, it was clearly intended to be funny but wasn’t. I shouldn’t have done it,” Franken said in a statement. (rtr)

George Clooney makes TV return with ‘Catch-22,’ two decades after ER
LOS ANGELES - George Clooney will make his return to television in a serialized adaptation of “Catch-22,” Paramount Television said on Thursday, nearly 20 years after he left hit show “ER” to become one of film’s biggest names. Clooney will direct and star in the six-episode series, based on U.S. author Joseph Heller’s darkly comedic 1961 novel “Catch-22,” for Viacom Inc’s Paramount Television and Anonymous Content, shooting in early 2018, the studio said. The show has not yet been acquired by a network for distribution but is likely to draw eager bidders given Clooney’s involvement. “Catch-22” follows a U.S. soldier named Yossarian during World War Two, who is infuriated that his own army keeps raising the number of missions that a soldier must
complete to be released from duty. Yossarian’s only way to avoid the missions is to declare insanity, but the only way to prove insanity is a willingness to embark on dangerous missions, thus creating the novel’s absurd ‘catch-22.’ Clooney, 56, will play Yossarian’s commander, Colonel Cathcart. No other cast has yet been announced. The actor’s move to television comes on the heels of Oscar-winning stars such as Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Julia Roberts, Robert De Niro and Michael Douglas,
who have all taken on small screen projects in recent years. More than 400 scripted TV shows are currently produced every year in the United States across traditional broadcast and cable networks and services such as Netflix, Amazon, Hulu and newcomer Apple, contributing to what many have said is ‘a new golden age’ of television. Clooney broke out as an actor on television series such as “The Facts of Life,” “Roseanne” and as part of the original cast of medical drama “ER” in 1994, playing Dr. Doug Ross. World’s largest aircraft rips and collapses
BEDFORDSHIRE - A woman has been injured after the world’s largest aircraft came loose from its moorings, causing it to rip and deflate. Airlander 10, a hybrid airship that is part-plane, collapsed in Cardington Airfield, Bedfordshire, following the incident at about 9.30am on Saturday. The woman was taken to hospital as a precaution after she suffered minor injuries. The mishap follows the £25m aircraft’s first flight in May after it crashed in August last year. During that incident, in which no one was injured, the 50ft-long aircraft nose-dived and crashed, severely damaging its cockpit. Manufacturer Hybrid Air Vehicles (HAV) is set to launch an investigation into why the aircraft, which is the length of a football pitch, broke free but said its hull was designed to rip open and deflate in the event of coming loose. In a statement, it said: “The aircraft was not flying at the time of the incident. Our initial assessment is that the aircraft broke free from its mooring mast for reasons that will be investigated.
“The aircraft has a safety system which operates automatically in circumstances of the aircraft breaking free of its mast, and is designed to rip open the hull and deflate the aircraft. “This is a safety feature to ensure our aircraft minimises any potential damage to its surroundings in these circumstances. The aircraft is now deflated and secure on the edge of the airfield. The fuel and helium inside the Airlander have been made safe.” The firm also said another person had suffered minor injuries while dealing with the aftermath of the incident. HAV added: “We are testing a brand new type of aircraft and incidents of this nature can occur during this phase of development.
“We will assess the cause of the incident and the extent of repairs needed to the aircraft in the next few weeks.”It comes after Twitter users expressed their delight at seeing the Airlander flying on Friday, with one calling the sight “fabulous”. Volcanic seismicity continues to decline in the past weeks
AMLAPURA - The volcanic seismicity of Mount Agung over the last week, has continued to decline. Despite the decrease in volcanic activity, the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) is still conducting evaluations to determine whether the alert level for Mount Agung should be lowered from level II ‘watch’ to level II ‘advisory’. Subdivision Head of Eastern Region Volcanology, Devy Kamil Syahbana, said on Saturday (Nov. 18) that the seismicity from November 12 until today has continued to decline. However, the seismicity is very shallow and in low frequencies and blowing has been recorded in the last wee, though admitted the numbers have not been significant, she said. “Spasmodic tremors are still being recorded. This indicates that there is still magmatic fluid flow from the depth, but amount does nto appear to be significant. Deformation of the mountain tends to remain stationary. Significant deformation pattern both inflation and deflation, were previously observed in August -October 2017”, she explained. Devy Syahbana said that based on the results of satellite monitoring, there is still thermal energy on the surface of the crater, but has not undergone a significant change. On November 14, a satellite recorded a slight expansion in one of the smoke exit holes at coordinates 8.3436, 115.5093. Syahbana added that smoke from the crater has been observed to reach heights of 700 meters in the last week. The increased height in the smoke plumes is caused by two things. First there are internal factors such as the emergence of low frequency of earthquakes and hot fluid from the magma that is still surfacing as blows of heat. Second are external factors such as rain that can affect the thickness or height of the observed smoke. “The results of water temperature measurements in
the springs around Mount Agung have not shown any significant change”, said Devy Syahbana. Furthermore, she said that movement of magma in the body of Mount Agung is still observed visually and recorded instrumentally while the intensity of the movement has tended to decline in the past week. The alert level for Mount Agung is currently still at Level III (watch). “We conduct careful evaluations every day and the alert level can change according to the amount of activity and the threat that Mount Agung could erupt”, she said. When asked about rumours that the alert level for Mount Agung will be lowered to level II ‘advisory’ on November 28th, Devy Syahbana siad that this was not true, explaining that her agency never schedules increases or decreases in alert levels ahead of time as this depends on present volcanic activity. “ We cannot ascertain ahead of time what the changes will be. Dog with rabies bites 12 people in Gianyar Market
GIANYAR - People living around Gianyar Market were surprised by a recent case of a rapid dog gone wild. A large brown stray dog started spreading the deadly rabies virus on Wednesday (Nov. 15) and as soon as animal health officers from Gianyar Agriculture Agency were alerted, they had the dog put down. Jero Wayan Siki was one of the victims of the rapid dog. This 55-year-old woman who sells rice paddies (ketupat) and tofu door to door every day, was bitten on Wednesday around 09:00 in the area of Harum Fajar store. Jero Wayan Siki was carrying tofu on her head and was shocked when the dog suddenly leapt at her right foot. “Actually I did not bother the dog at all when I walked by”, she explained when met on Friday (Nov. 17). Siki who is a resident of Lekok hamlet, Teges, Gianyar suffered bite wounds on the back of her right leg. At the time, she thought the bite was not severe, but when she arrived home, she saw that she was bleeding. “ I immediately washed the wound with soap and water”, she said. When she told her husband and his family about the incident, she was advised to get a rabies vaccine (VAR) at the nearest public health center. The bite wound marked by two holes where the dog’s teeth had punctured her flesh was not sever and did not requires stitches, though she was given a vaccine. “ I should have a medical check-up in five days”, she added. Jero Wayan Siki said that she hopes that the stray dogs in Gianyar Market will be rounded up, because she works there almost every day. “I will be scared of being bitten again if I see stray dogs” she said. Between Tuesday (Nov. 14) and Thursday (Nov. 16) some 12 people were reportedly bitten by the dog at Gianyar Public Market and were observed to have received VAR injections from the public health center. However, it is thought that there may have more bite incidents as the rapid dog was wandering around an open public space. When contacted separately, Animal Health Section Head of the Gianyar Agriculture Agency, Ketut Ariyasa, confirmed that the stray dog that had bitten people at the Gianyar Market was carrying the rabies virus. “ The dog was put down and brain samples showed that the dog had been carrying rabies”, he said. To follow up on this incident, the Gianyar Agriculture Agency has been following their SOP and a total of 143 dogs in the area around the market have been vaccinated again. On Monday (Nov. 20), stray dogs at Gianyar Market will be put down. (nik)

conference on Friday (Nov. 17) for the co-working festival 2017 that his work model is believed to benefit the nation’s’ economy – especially the creative sectors. “ We need more entrepreneurs”, she added. Currently only 2 percent of Indonesia’s population are entrepreneurs and to accommodate a workforce of 250 million, more entrepreneurs are needed. Singapore for example is a small country with a total population of approximately 5 million but 8 percent of the population is entrepreneur. The small percentage of entrepreneur’s in Indonesia has a negative impact on the welfare of the nation.
According to Alund, one of the obstacles to encouraging entrepreneurship has been a lack of places with a co-working concept for people to gather. Having a place where people with a variety of expertise can work together can help strengthen networking as capital for growth, allowing small-scape entrepreneurs to quickly expand their businesses. Currently, there are 170 official co-working spaces spread across 27 cities in Indonesia. However these are limited to cities in western and central Indonesia, with none in Eastern Indonesia yet. Tourists start visiting Besakih again
Cloth merchants re-open their stalls
AMLAPURA — Several kiosks in Besakih village have opened again after having been closed for over a month following Mount Agung’s increased volcanic activity. After the alert level for Mount Agung was lowered from level IV (warning) to level III (watch), the Besakih tourist attraction was re-opened, clothing and food stalls in the area also re-opened.
Some kiosks selling cloth or food as well as coffee shops opened again as soon as Besakih tourist attraction was re-opened, while others only opened a few days later. One cloth merchants named I Gusti Ayu Suriantini, said on Wednesday (Nov. 15) that she re-opened her stall on Tuesday after she returned home having been evacuated to Klungkung on September 22nd. “I just re-opened two days ago after I heard that tourists were coming to Besakih again. SO far I only have a bit of merchandise on display though”, she said. Nromally Suriantini sells quite a lot of cloth, but since she re-opened she says no tourists have stopped by her cloth that she sells from between IDR 20,000- IDR 100,000. “We used to always sell at least a few pieces, but since we re-opened I haven’t sold a single cloth” she complained. Another cloth seller named I Gusti Ayu Parwati, also said that she had not sold any cloth since she re-opened her stall. She added tat she hopes that the condition of Mount Agung returns to normal and that sales pick up as this is her only source of income. “ I haven’t sold any cloth yet. Hopefully there will be some buyers”, she said smiling. Mangku Runik who sells cloth in the stal lnext to Parwati said that he re-opened 11 days ago, as soon as Besakih tourist attraction re-opened. “We did sell a few pieces of cloth. CAIRO - Egypt opened an exhibition on Wednesday to display previously unseen treasures from King Tutankhamun’s famed tomb. The exhibition, dubbed ‘Tutankhamun’s Unseen Treasures: the Golden Flakes, is part of a joint cooperation effort between the Ministry of Antiquities and the German Archaeological Institute in Cairo, which spans back many years according to the head of the Museums Sector, Elham Salah. Salah added that the exhibition also comes as the Ministry of Antiquities celebrates its 115th anniversary, and the German Ar-
chaeological Institute celebrates its 60th year since reopening. Christian Eckmann, a German restorer at the Roman-Germanic Museum in Mainz, who contributed to the restoration of King Tut’s golden sheets, said that the process of restoring the flakes began in 2014 in cooperation between the Egyptian Museum, the German Archaeological Institute in Cairo, the Roman-Germanic Museum, and the University of Tubingen. According to Eckmann, the golden sheets have been in a poor state and held at the Egyptian Mu-
seum since the discovery of King Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922. The exhibition is open for 45 days, after which the sheets will be transferred to the Grand Egyptian Museum in al-Remaya Square to be displayed at the partial inauguration of the museum in 2018. At least 55 pieces of fabric decorated with gold that were found in the tomb of the pharaoh, better known as King Tut, will be exhibited in public for the first time since its discovery in 1922, said Christian Eckmann. He said the pieces had been kept in storage at the Egyptian Museum
in Cairo for some 95 years, without being restored or scientifically examined. He said the artifacts attest to the network of social and cultural connections which have characterized the eastern Mediterranean going back to antiquity. “Those pieces are connected to the chariots of Tutankhamun,” he said. “They were unfortunately in a very bad state of condition.” Some depict traditional Egyptian motifs, while others feature designs that were widespread throughout the eastern Mediterranean in the second millennium

Palm-leaf manuscript researcher, Prof. Dr. H.I.R Hinzler from the Netherlands, recently declared that all the palmleaf manuscripts in Leiden museum are copies or transcripts, not original Balinese lontar. Moreover, Hinzler who has been researching Balinese palm-leaf manuscripts since 1972, siad that the government of Karangasem’s plan to build a palm-leaf manuscript museum Candrabhuana Cultural Park, Amlapura, to house repatriated original palm-leaf manuscripts of Bali, especially Karangasem, from Leiden Museum is futile. At that time, he recorded and invited some people to copy the original Balinese palm-leaf manuscripts onto paper, and after copying them, the original manuscripts were immediately returned to Bali. This researcher only had a collection of a few palm-leaf manuscripts that were given to him as a gift after doing his research. These gifted manuscripts amounted to no

more than 200 in number. The total number of palm-leaf manuscripts registered in Leiden Museum, is 6,000 typed copies. The total number of manuscripts and digital versions is approximately 9,000 copies. “At that time, while researching Balinese customary law, the Dutch copied the manuscripts by hand because the Balinese people did not want to give them the originals. The manuscripts were borrowed, copied then returned. The Dutch did not steal the manuscripts” explained Prof. Hinzler who also works in Leiden Museum helping take care of the museum. When other Dutch researchers such as Prof. Hooykas (Prof. Hinzler’s own teacher) did their research), they also had to copy the originals. So, of the thousands of palm-leaf manuscripts kept in Leiden Museum, Hinzler affirmed that the only originals are the ones offered as gifts and that these are relatively few in number compared to the number of copied manuscripts. He added that most of the manuscripts are in fact stored in the Documentation Center in Denpasar. Another Balinese palm-leaf manuscripts reseracher named Sugi Lanus, when met at the same location, explained that in 1929 the Dutch had a project to type out Balinese palm-leaf manuscripts. Manuscripts owned by Balinese people were leant to the Dutch by the Kirtya tema of curators. The curators consisted of nine Brahmin
priests (pedanda) and two Dutch researchers. The manuscripts were copied on the spot and six copies were made of each manuscript, pne of whch was given to Kirtya. Therefor the most current copies of the palm-leaf manuscripts in Leiden Museum actually also exist in Gedong Kirtya Museum. Today, it is unknown who the owners of the original palm-leaf manuscripts were, which memebr of their family is storing them now, where they are stored or whether they are damaed or not. Many Balinese people do not even take care of their manuscripts. Sugi Lanus is currently checking 260 original manuscripts in the home of a Brahmin priest and 80 percent of the lontar are in very worrying condition. “Thankfully, some of the original Balinese palmleaf manuscripts have been typed or copied, so there is proof. Besides, some manuscripts in the Netherlands are just the backup copies of the ones in Bali”, he added. Sugi Lanus asserted that currently there are still approximately 2,850 original Balinese palm-leaf manuscripts stored in Document Center on Jalan Juanda, Denpasar, collected by some Balinese literati. The Bali Museum also has about 50 original Balinese palm-leaf manuscripts. Now, any customary villages or parties being confused and wishing to find the original manuscripts can check directly with the Document Center. Moreover, Sugi Lanus also claimed to have all the copies. For those wishing to really know, he claimed to be ready to
show the manuscripts requested in his database. Some customary villages in Bali are in confusion to arrange awig-awig (customary village bylaw) because they do not find the original palm-leaf manuscript used as the reference. When asked about the establishment of Lontar Museum at Dukuh Penaban village, he said that any village can build community museum. It is a positive and new phenomenon in the development of Balinese literature. In the community of this village alone, there have been about 400 palm-leaf manuscripts. Later on, they will be added with other borrowed manuscripts to be exhibited at this location so that they can be well maintained. If collected all, the plan to build the Lontar Museum at Dukuh Penaban is ready with 700 manuscripts. If the district government of Karangasem truly wants to build a palm-leaf manuscript museum as well, according to him who is also a founding team of Lontar Museum of Dukuh Penaban, there is no intention to make a competition in building a museum. However, it should mutually complement. “Later, we will do what is not worked on by the district government. In a palm-leaf manuscript museum, there will be several packages of activities. For example, there are activities of transcribing Balinese script on palm leaves, workshop on the making of palm-leaf manuscript. Increasing outbound travelers must be anticipated
MANGUPURA — The number of domestic tourists from Indonesia traveling overseas (outbound travelers) increased by about 7 million. This figure is lower than inbound travelers. PARIS - Saad al-Hariri, who resigned as Lebanon’s prime minister this month while in Saudi Arabia, said on Saturday he would clarify his position when he returns to Beirut next week. Hariri’s resignation on Nov. 4 threw Lebanon into political crisis and put it centre-stage in the Middle East’s overarching rivalry between Sunni Saudi Arabia and its allies and a bloc led by Shi’ite Iran. “With regard to the political situation in Lebanon, I will go to Beirut in the coming days, I will participate in the independence celebrations, and it is there that I will make known my position on these subjects after meeting President (Michel) Aoun,” Hariri said after holding talks with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris. Hariri declined to take questions, but is set to return to Beirut by Wednesday when Lebanon celebrates its independence day. He thanked Macron, who has been mediating as part of French efforts to try to ease tensions across the region, for his help. Macron had leveraged France’s close relations with both Lebanon and Saudi Arabia to secure a deal that saw Hariri travel to Paris and open the door to a resolution of the crisis. Hariri, who arrived at his residence in Paris in the early hours of the morning, told Aoun in a phone call from Paris that he would be in Lebanon on Wednesday for the celebrations, the Lebanese president said on Twitter. “Lebanon is being shaken so it’s important Hariri comes to Paris for us to work with him on the best way out of the crisis,” said a senior French diplomat. “We’re trying to create the conditions for a de-escalation in the region. Francis celebrated a Mass marking the Roman Catholic Church’s first yearly World Day of the Poor, which the pope established to draw the attention of the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics to the neediest. Volunteers from charity organisations brought about 7,000 needy people to St Peter’s Basilica for a special Mass celebrated by the pope, who has made defence of the poor, immigrants and downtrodden a major plank of his papacy. Metal recyclers prepare for electric car revolution

COBALT PRESSURE Most electric cars are powered by lithium NMC batteries which use a cathode composed of nickel, manganese and cobalt and a graphite anode. Mining enough cobalt to meet demand is a particular concern as most of the world’s supplies
come from Democratic Republic of Congo, where mining areas are prone to conflict. The price of cobalt <COB-CATH-LON> has more than doubled so far this year. Supplies of lithium, mainly mined in Chile, are under far less pressure at the moment and new production is due to come on stream in Argentina and Australia. But concern the supply of lithium in battery-ready form will struggle to keep pace with electric car sales has pushed prices up more than 30 percent to a record $12,000 a tonne this year. Besides a shortage of old batteries to recycle, companies also face challenges extracting lithium in a reusable form. Most recyclers heat old batteries to high temperatures to retrieve metals, a process known as pyrometallurgy. But this generally only yields cobalt, and sometimes nickel, while lithium is more difficult and expensive to extract. The cost of recycling varies widely, but to be economical, CRU estimates it would need to be transformed back into lithium carbonate at a maximum cost of $7,000 a tonne. For now, lithium usually ends up in waste slag, which can be used as a building material, or is thrown away. But with the price of all these metals rising, that picture may change. MATERIAL MATRIX Technological advances are key to retrieving more waste metal from batteries and some companies say they have developed ways to get lithium that will come into their own once there’s a steady supply of spent batteries to recycle. Umicore uses a combination of pyrometallurgy and a chemical process known as hydrometallurgy to retrieve lithium and rare earths from slag, as well as extracting cobalt, nickel, and copper. “A battery is a complex material

Picture taken November 8, 2017. matrix,” Umicore says. “However, our process allows (us) to separate and concentrate the lithium in one process step, and yields alloys with cobalt, nickel and copper.” Umicore operates a pilot plant with a 7,000-tonne capacity that can process some 35,000 electric vehicle batteries a year. Analysts say the Belgian company, a wellestablished materials recycler, is by far the most developed lithium ion battery processor in Europe. “For investors to play the recycling theme, for now the best way is Umicore,” said Tobias Bischoff, a portfolio manager at de Pury Pictet Turrettini & Cie who advises NSF Wealth Management’s Global New Mobility fund. U.S. company Retriev Technologies has been recycling lithium ion batteries at its plant in Trail, British Columbia, since 2002, recovering cobalt, nickel and copper. It expanded a facility in Ohio to process lithium ion batteries two years ago. Between 2012 and the end of last year production at its Trail facility doubled, with the plant processing about 1,200 tonnes of
batteries. The company expects growth at a similar rate over the next five years, vice president Todd Coy said. Other companies are also pushing into lithium ion battery recycling. Accurec now has a 1,000-tonne capacity demonstration plant for recycling car batteries at its Krefeld facility in western Germany, though it says volumes remain small. Australia’s Neometals is building a pilot plant in Montreal, aiming to develop processes tested in laboratories and small-scale plants for extracting cobalt, lithium and nickel. Also in Canada, American Manganese says it can retrieve 100 percent of the lithium - as well as cobalt, nickel, manganese and aluminium - from batteries, using technology originally developed to process low-grade manganese ores. It has completed a proof of concept for its process and has a patent pending. A pilot plant is the next step. SECOND LIFE But commercial development for recyclers is tough without the economies of scale that will come
with a greater supply of spent batteries. Retriev, for example, says large volumes will be key to developing lithium recycling using hydrometallurgy. “At current commodity prices we need approximately 4,000 tonnes per year of batteries to justify the estimated capital costs,” Retriev’s Coy said, more than three times its current processing volumes. “We are confident this volume will be coming in the future - beyond 2023 - but the market is not there yet.” While electronic car sales are growing fast, lithium ion car batteries last eight to 10 years on average, meaning it will be the best part of a decade before significant numbers are spent. American Manganese’s Reaugh says it is planning to focus initially on recycling material from faulty batteries to get around the wait for working batteries to expire. Even when they do, battery makers say many will have a second life as grid storage, potentially for the best part of another decade. German carmaker BMW, for example, says its batteries are specifically designed for that purpose.(rtr)

LONDON - Recycling companies are honing processes to extract metals from old batteries more cheaply and efficiently so they can capitalise on an expected shortfall in materials such as cobalt and lithium when sales of electric cars take off. The main obstacle recyclers face now is a shortage of spent batteries to recycle to make their technology cost-effective, but those at the forefront of the industry are confident the supply, and profits, will come. “The value of lithium carbonate and natural or synthetic graphite has doubled or tripled in the last three or four years, becoming the most valuable materials besides cobalt in the automotive battery,” Albrecht Melber, co-managing director of German recycling firm Accurec, said. “There are big values that can be recycled in the future.” Electric vehicle sales are expected to pass 14 million a year by 2025 from less than a million now, fuelling a surge in the consumption of battery materials. Data specialist Benchmark Mineral Intelligence predicts the industry will need an extra 30,000 tonnes of cobalt and 81,000 tonnes of lithium a year to meet demand by 2021. Commodity research group CRU expects 11,600 tonnes of cobalt to come from recycling in 2021, up from 7,110 a year now, and 24,900 tonnes by 2026, accounting for 9.7 percent and 17.9 percent of the total market supply respectively. In China, where electric vehicle sales topped half a million last year, recyclers are getting ready to deal with a mountain of battery waste and others also see opportunities. “A 1,000-pound lithium cobalt battery contains about $6,000 worth of cathode material at the top end of the value chain and about $1,700 for a nickel-cobalt-aluminum battery at the low end,” said Larry Reaugh, chief executive of Canadian metals recycler American Manganese. “If this equated to mining you would have a very high grade feedstock,” he said. “We’re mining batteries, you might say.”

As nations from Chile to South Africa offered help, Argentine sea vessels and planes scoured the southern sea. But a storm pitching powerful winds and waves more than 6 meters (20 feet) high has disrupted visibility and movement in the area, navy spokesman Enrique Balbi said. The submarine’s color and design, which aim to camouflage the vessel in the ocean’s surface, also posed a challenge. “The idea is to continue through the night and the early morning, depending on weather conditions,” Balbi told reporters. The weather was expected to be somewhat im-
proved on Sunday, he said. A search of 80 percent of the area initially targeted for the operation turned up no sign of the vessel, but the crew should have ample supplies of food and oxygen, Balbi added. The dramatic search has captivated the nation of 44 million, which recently mourned the loss of five citizens killed when a truck driver plowed through a bicycle path in New York City. In the resort and fishing city of Mar del Plata, where the submarine had been destined to arrive before vanishing, a Catholic Mass was held in honor of the crew members.

Suspected of graft, Indonesian parliament speaker put under guard in hospital
JAKARTA - Named as a suspect in a $170 million corruption case, the speaker of Indonesia’s parliament was put under armed guard at a hospital by anti-graft investigators after he was involved in a car accident, his lawyer said on Friday. Officers from the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) first tried to arrest Setya Novanto, the chairman of Golkar, Indonesia’s second-largest party and partner in the ruling coalition, at his house in Jakarta late on Wednesday.

The swoop, watched by television cameras, failed to find Novanto, sparking speculation that he had gone into hiding. On Thursday evening, the saga took a bizarre twist after reports Novanto was involved in a car crash while on his way to turn himself in at KPK headquarters. Novanto’s lawyer, Fredrich Yunadi, said his client was being interviewed at the time of the accident by a journalist driving the vehicle. “(The driver) was looking back and looking to the side, so he wasn’t concentrating on what was in front of him,” he said. Novanto was now “very ill” with head and hand injuries, Yunadi said. “He can’t even get up yet. He can’t talk yet, it’s just his eyes – when he opens his eyes the ceiling swirls in circles.” Armed KPK officers were now at the hospital, Yunadi said, adding that they had ignored his requests to leave. Double F1 world champion Alonso, who competed in this year’s Indianapolis 500, has set his sights on completing the so-called Triple Crown of motorsport. The feat, only achieved by the late British driver Graham Hill, involves winning Indianapolis, The Le Mans 24 Hours sportscar car and the Formula One world championship. Some consider the Triple Crown to be the Monaco Grand Prix, rather than the world championship, but Alonso has in any case won both. The 36-year-old McLaren Formula One driver will drive the Toyota TS050 hybrid car in the one-day rookie test at the Sakhir circuit. The test comes a day after the final race of the world endurance season, the Six Hours of Bahrain, with Alonso then travelling to Abu Dhabi for the year’s closing grand prix at Yas Marina. The Spaniard visited Toyota’s Cologne factory on Nov. 7 for a seat fitting and simulator session. “We are very excited that Fernando will test our car. Double F1 world champion Alonso, who competed in this year’s Indianapolis 500, has set his sights on completing the so-called Triple Crown of motorsport. The feat, only achieved by the late British driver Graham Hill, involves winning Indianapolis, The Le Mans 24 Hours sportscar car and the Formula One world championship. Some consider the Triple Crown to be the Monaco Grand Prix, rather than the world championship, but Alonso has in any case won both. The 36-year-old McLaren Formula One driver will drive the Toyota TS050 hybrid car in the one-day rookie test at the Sakhir circuit. The test comes a day after the final race of the world endurance season, the Six Hours of Bahrain, with Alonso then travelling to Abu Dhabi for the year’s closing grand prix at Yas Marina. The Spaniard visited Toyota’s Cologne factory on Nov. 7 for a seat fitting and simulator session. “We are very excited that Fernando will test our car. Speaking to Reuters as he walked into an extraordinary meeting of ZANU-PF’s central committee, Chris Mutsvangwa said Mugabe was running out of time to negotiate his departure and should leave the country while he could. “We are going all the way,” Mutsvangwa said. “He’s trying to bargain for a dignified exit.” He followed up with threat to call for street protests if Mugabe refused to go, telling reporters: “We will bring back the crowds and they will do their business.” Mutsvangwa, who has spearheaded a campaign over the last 18 months to remove the only leader Zimbabwe has known, said ZANU-PF would also dismiss Mugabe’s wife Grace as head of its Women’s League and reinstate ousted vice-president Emmerson Mnangagwa. The former state security chief, known as “The Crocodile”, is thought to be in line to head an interim post-Mugabe unity government that will focus on rebuilding ties with the outside world and stabilising an economy in freefall. State television said late on Friday that Mugabe, who has so far resisted pressure to quit, would meet military commanders who seized power in a de facto coup four days ago, along with a Catholic priest who has been mediating between the two sides. Argentina says signals detected, likely from missing submarine MAR DEL PLATA - Hopes that 44 crew members of a missing Argentine navy submarine may be found alive rose after the defense ministry said the vessel likely tried to communicate via satellite on Saturday as an international search mission was underway in the stormy South Atlantic. The ministry said seven failed “satellite calls” that it believes came from the ARA San Juan submarine were detected in a likely sign the crew was trying to reestablish contact. The signals, in the late morning and early afternoon, lasted
between four and 36 seconds, the ministry said. Argentina is working on tracing the location with an unnamed U.S. company specialized in satellite communications, the ministry said. The satellite communications were believed to have failed because of foul weather, a source in the defense ministry who was not authorized to speak publicly told Reuters. It was not immediately clear what type of calls the vessel may have tried to make but submarines that are stricken underwater can float a location beacon known as
an EPIRB to the surface that can then emit emergency signals via satellite. Whipping winds and more than 20-foot waves in the South Atlantic hindered the international search for the submarine. The last confirmed location of the German-built ARA San Juan was 432 km (268 miles) off Argentina’s southern Atlantic coast early on Wednesday. The U.S. Navy said it was deploying a deep-sea rescue mission to Argentina from California to support the effort, with a remotely operated vehicle and two vessels capable of rescuing people from bottomed submarines set to arrive in coming days. The submarine’s color and design, which aim to camouflage the vessel in the ocean’s surface, also posed a challenge. “The idea is to continue through the night and the early morning, depending on weather conditions,” Balbi told reporters. Suspected of graft, Indonesian parliament speaker put under guard in hospital
JAKARTA - Named as a suspect in a $170 million corruption case, the speaker of Indonesia’s parliament was put under armed guard at a hospital by anti-graft investigators after he was involved in a car accident, his lawyer said on Friday. Officers from the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) first tried to arrest Setya Novanto, the chairman of Golkar, Indonesia’s second-largest party and partner in the ruling coalition, at his house in Jakarta late on Wednesday.

The swoop, watched by television cameras, failed to find Novanto, sparking speculation that he had gone into hiding. On Thursday evening, the saga took a bizarre twist after reports Novanto was involved in a car crash while on his way to turn himself in at KPK headquarters. Novanto’s lawyer, Fredrich Yunadi, said his client was being interviewed at the time of the accident by a journalist driving the vehicle. “(The driver) was looking back and looking to the side, so he wasn’t concentrating on what was in front of him,” he said. Novanto was now “very ill” with head and hand injuries, Yunadi said. “He can’t even get up yet. He can’t talk yet, it’s just his eyes – when he opens his eyes the ceiling swirls in circles.” Armed KPK officers were now at the hospital, Yunadi said, adding that they had ignored his requests to leave. Indonesian newspapers on Friday splashed pictures across their front pages of the black sport utility vehicle that Novanto was said to have been travelling in. It was resting against an electricity pole, and appeared to have suffered only minor damage to the front fender. Novanto has previously denied wrongdoing, but has repeatedly missed summonses from the KPK for questioning in recent months, saying he was ill and needed to undergo heart surgery. The KPK is investigating state losses amounting to about $170 million linked to a national electronic identity card (E-KTP) scheme after allegations that sums ranging from $5,000 to $5.5 million - generated by marking up procurement costs- were divided up among politicians in parliament. State-owned airport operator PT Angkasa Pura II (AP II) together with Central Java Provincial Administration recently signed an MoU agreement to develop Panglima Jenderal Soedirman Airport in Wirasaba Village, Bukateja District, Purbalingga Regency to become a commercial airport. The signing was conducted at the Airport Hotel, Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Tangerang. “The groundbreaking is slated for mid-December this year and we are expecting [the development] to be completed
by December 2018,” said Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo. The airport will provide easy access for not only the residents of Purbalingga to travel to other cities but people who live in regencies close to the area as well such as Banyumas, Banjarnegara, Wonosobo, Temanggung and Kebumen regencies. “Several regencies in the pantura (northern coastal region) area will reap the benefit too like Pekalongan, Pemalang,Tegal and Brebes. Metal recyclers prepare for electric car revolution

COBALT PRESSURE Most electric cars are powered by lithium NMC batteries which use a cathode composed of nickel, manganese and cobalt and a graphite anode. Mining enough cobalt to meet demand is a particular concern as most of the world’s supplies
come from Democratic Republic of Congo, where mining areas are prone to conflict. The price of cobalt <COB-CATH-LON> has more than doubled so far this year. Supplies of lithium, mainly mined in Chile, are under far less pressure at the moment and new production is due to come on stream in Argentina and Australia. But concern the supply of lithium in battery-ready form will struggle to keep pace with electric car sales has pushed prices up more than 30 percent to a record $12,000 a tonne this year. Besides a shortage of old batteries to recycle, companies also face challenges extracting lithium in a reusable form. Most recyclers heat old batteries to high temperatures to retrieve metals, a process known as pyrometallurgy. But this generally only yields cobalt, and sometimes nickel, while lithium is more difficult and expensive to extract. The cost of recycling varies widely, but to be economical, CRU estimates it would need to be transformed back into lithium carbonate at a maximum cost of $7,000 a tonne. For now, lithium usually ends up in waste slag, which can be used as a building material, or is thrown away. But with the price of all these metals rising, that picture may change. MATERIAL MATRIX Technological advances are key to retrieving more waste metal from batteries and some companies say they have developed ways to get lithium that will come into their own once there’s a steady supply of spent batteries to recycle. Umicore uses a combination of pyrometallurgy and a chemical process known as hydrometallurgy to retrieve lithium and rare earths from slag, as well as extracting cobalt, nickel, and copper. “A battery is a complex material

Picture taken November 8, 2017. matrix,” Umicore says. “However, our process allows (us) to separate and concentrate the lithium in one process step, and yields alloys with cobalt, nickel and copper.” Umicore operates a pilot plant with a 7,000-tonne capacity that can process some 35,000 electric vehicle batteries a year. Analysts say the Belgian company, a wellestablished materials recycler, is by far the most developed lithium ion battery processor in Europe. “For investors to play the recycling theme, for now the best way is Umicore,” said Tobias Bischoff, a portfolio manager at de Pury Pictet Turrettini & Cie who advises NSF Wealth Management’s Global New Mobility fund. U.S. company Retriev Technologies has been recycling lithium ion batteries at its plant in Trail, British Columbia, since 2002, recovering cobalt, nickel and copper. It expanded a facility in Ohio to process lithium ion batteries two years ago. Between 2012 and the end of last year production at its Trail facility doubled, with the plant processing about 1,200 tonnes of
batteries. The company expects growth at a similar rate over the next five years, vice president Todd Coy said. Other companies are also pushing into lithium ion battery recycling. Accurec now has a 1,000-tonne capacity demonstration plant for recycling car batteries at its Krefeld facility in western Germany, though it says volumes remain small. Australia’s Neometals is building a pilot plant in Montreal, aiming to develop processes tested in laboratories and small-scale plants for extracting cobalt, lithium and nickel. Also in Canada, American Manganese says it can retrieve 100 percent of the lithium - as well as cobalt, nickel, manganese and aluminium - from batteries, using technology originally developed to process low-grade manganese ores. It has completed a proof of concept for its process and has a patent pending. A pilot plant is the next step. SECOND LIFE But commercial development for recyclers is tough without the economies of scale that will come
with a greater supply of spent batteries. Retriev, for example, says large volumes will be key to developing lithium recycling using hydrometallurgy. “At current commodity prices we need approximately 4,000 tonnes per year of batteries to justify the estimated capital costs,” Retriev’s Coy said, more than three times its current processing volumes. “We are confident this volume will be coming in the future - beyond 2023 - but the market is not there yet.” While electronic car sales are growing fast, lithium ion car batteries last eight to 10 years on average, meaning it will be the best part of a decade before significant numbers are spent. American Manganese’s Reaugh says it is planning to focus initially on recycling material from faulty batteries to get around the wait for working batteries to expire. Even when they do, battery makers say many will have a second life as grid storage, potentially for the best part of another decade. German carmaker BMW, for example, says its batteries are specifically designed for that purpose.(rtr)

LONDON - Recycling companies are honing processes to extract metals from old batteries more cheaply and efficiently so they can capitalise on an expected shortfall in materials such as cobalt and lithium when sales of electric cars take off. The main obstacle recyclers face now is a shortage of spent batteries to recycle to make their technology cost-effective, but those at the forefront of the industry are confident the supply, and profits, will come. “The value of lithium carbonate and natural or synthetic graphite has doubled or tripled in the last three or four years, becoming the most valuable materials besides cobalt in the automotive battery,” Albrecht Melber, co-managing director of German recycling firm Accurec, said. “There are big values that can be recycled in the future.” Electric vehicle sales are expected to pass 14 million a year by 2025 from less than a million now, fuelling a surge in the consumption of battery materials. Data specialist Benchmark Mineral Intelligence predicts the industry will need an extra 30,000 tonnes of cobalt and 81,000 tonnes of lithium a year to meet demand by 2021. Commodity research group CRU expects 11,600 tonnes of cobalt to come from recycling in 2021, up from 7,110 a year now, and 24,900 tonnes by 2026, accounting for 9.7 percent and 17.9 percent of the total market supply respectively. In China, where electric vehicle sales topped half a million last year, recyclers are getting ready to deal with a mountain of battery waste and others also see opportunities. “A 1,000-pound lithium cobalt battery contains about $6,000 worth of cathode material at the top end of the value chain and about $1,700 for a nickel-cobalt-aluminum battery at the low end,” said Larry Reaugh, chief executive of Canadian metals recycler American Manganese. “If this equated to mining you would have a very high grade feedstock,” he said. “We’re mining batteries, you might say.”

In the past, people used use coloring from leaves, so it had a minimal color namely white and green only. How to prepare it? Firstly, boil coconut milk with fragrant pandan leaves. Then, add with salt to taste and stir finely. At the same time, also prepare one tray and put rice flour, sago flour and mixed sugar into one. After that, pour boiled coconut milk into the flour mixture and then mix them well. Increasing outbound travelers must be anticipated
MANGUPURA — The number of domestic tourists from Indonesia traveling overseas (outbound travelers) increased by about 7 million. This figure is lower than inbound travelers. PARIS - Saad al-Hariri, who resigned as Lebanon’s prime minister this month while in Saudi Arabia, said on Saturday he would clarify his position when he returns to Beirut next week. Hariri’s resignation on Nov. 4 threw Lebanon into political crisis and put it centre-stage in the Middle East’s overarching rivalry between Sunni Saudi Arabia and its allies and a bloc led by Shi’ite Iran. “With regard to the political situation in Lebanon, I will go to Beirut in the coming days, I will participate in the independence celebrations, and it is there that I will make known my position on these subjects after meeting President (Michel) Aoun,” Hariri said after holding talks with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris. Hariri declined to take questions, but is set to return to Beirut by Wednesday when Lebanon celebrates its independence day. He thanked Macron, who has been mediating as part of French efforts to try to ease tensions across the region, for his help. Macron had leveraged France’s close relations with both Lebanon and Saudi Arabia to secure a deal that saw Hariri travel to Paris and open the door to a resolution of the crisis. Hariri, who arrived at his residence in Paris in the early hours of the morning, told Aoun in a phone call from Paris that he would be in Lebanon on Wednesday for the celebrations, the Lebanese president said on Twitter. “Lebanon is being shaken so it’s important Hariri comes to Paris for us to work with him on the best way out of the crisis,” said a senior French diplomat. “We’re trying to create the conditions for a de-escalation in the region. We want to avoid a proliferation of crises that could get out of control.” Hariri’s abrupt resignation and continued stay in Saudi Arabia has caused fears for Lebanon’s stability. Volunteers from charity organisations brought about 7,000 needy people to St Peter’s Basilica for a special Mass celebrated by the pope, who has made defence of the poor, immigrants and downtrodden a major plank of his papacy. About 1,500 of them were having lunch with the pope in the Vatican’s large audience hall and others were being taken to eat as guests in nearby pontifical colleges. Most of the needy people were from Rome and other parts of Italy but charity groups also brought groups from France, Spain, Ger-

Tourists start visiting Besakih again

AMLAPURA — Several kiosks in Besakih village have opened again after having been closed for over a month following Mount Agung’s increased volcanic activity. After the alert level for Mount Agung was lowered from level IV (warning) to level III (watch), the Besakih tourist attraction was re-opened, clothing and food stalls in the area also re-opened.
Some kiosks selling cloth or food as well as coffee shops opened again as soon as Besakih tourist attraction was re-opened, while others only opened a few days later. One cloth merchants named I Gusti Ayu Suriantini, said on Wednesday (Nov. 15) that she re-opened her stall on Tuesday after she returned home having been evacuated to Klungkung on September 22nd. “I just re-opened two days ago after I heard that tourists were coming to Besakih again. SO far I only have a bit of merchandise on display though”, she said. Nromally Suriantini sells quite a lot of cloth, but since she re-opened she says no tourists have stopped by her cloth that she sells from between IDR 20,000- IDR 100,000. “We used to always sell at least a few pieces, but since we re-opened I haven’t sold a single cloth” she complained. Another cloth seller named I Gusti Ayu Parwati, also said that she had not sold any cloth since she re-opened her stall. She added tat she hopes that the condition of Mount Agung returns to normal and that sales pick up as this is her only source of income. “ I haven’t sold any cloth yet. Hopefully there will be some buyers”, she said smiling. Mangku Runik who sells cloth in the stal lnext to Parwati said that he re-opened 11 days ago, as soon as Besakih tourist attraction re-opened. “We did sell a few pieces of cloth. Christian Eckmann, a German restorer at the Roman-Germanic Museum in Mainz, who contributed to the restoration of King Tut’s golden sheets, said that the process of restoring the flakes began in 2014 in cooperation between the Egyptian Museum, the German Archaeological Institute in Cairo, the Roman-Germanic Museum, and the University of Tubingen. According to Eckmann, the golden sheets have been in a poor state and held at the Egyptian Mu-
seum since the discovery of King Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922. The exhibition is open for 45 days, after which the sheets will be transferred to the Grand Egyptian Museum in al-Remaya Square to be displayed at the partial inauguration of the museum in 2018. At least 55 pieces of fabric decorated with gold that were found in the tomb of the pharaoh, better known as King Tut, will be exhibited in public for the first time since its discovery in 1922, said Christian Eckmann. He said the pieces had been kept in storage at the Egyptian Museum
in Cairo for some 95 years, without being restored or scientifically examined. He said the artifacts attest to the network of social and cultural connections which have characterized the eastern Mediterranean going back to antiquity. “Those pieces are connected to the chariots of Tutankhamun,” he said. “They were unfortunately in a very bad state of condition.” Some depict traditional Egyptian motifs, while others feature designs that were widespread throughout the eastern Mediterranean in the second millennium

Palm-leaf manuscript researcher, Prof. Dr. H.I.R Hinzler from the Netherlands, recently declared that all the palmleaf manuscripts in Leiden museum are copies or transcripts, not original Balinese lontar. Moreover, Hinzler who has been researching Balinese palm-leaf manuscripts since 1972, siad that the government of Karangasem’s plan to build a palm-leaf manuscript museum Candrabhuana Cultural Park, Amlapura, to house repatriated original palm-leaf manuscripts of Bali, especially Karangasem, from Leiden Museum is futile. customary village on Tuesday (Nov. 14), Prof. Hinzler explained that before there were any Balinese palm-leaf manuscripts in Leiden Museum the Dutch did formal data collection starting 1929 through the Gedong Kirtya Museum. However, before this data was collected there had been a Dutch researcher named Herman Neubronner Van Der Tuuk who wrote a Balinese and Old Javanese dictionary. At that time, he recorded and invited some people to copy the original Balinese palm-leaf manuscripts onto paper, and after copying them, the original manuscripts were immediately returned to Bali. This researcher only had a collection of a few palm-leaf manuscripts that were given to him as a gift after doing his research. These gifted manuscripts amounted to no

more than 200 in number. The total number of palm-leaf manuscripts registered in Leiden Museum, is 6,000 typed copies. The total number of manuscripts and digital versions is approximately 9,000 copies. “At that time, while researching Balinese customary law, the Dutch copied the manuscripts by hand because the Balinese people did not want to give them the originals. The manuscripts were borrowed, copied then returned. The Dutch did not steal the manuscripts” explained Prof. Hinzler who also works in Leiden Museum helping take care of the museum. When other Dutch researchers such as Prof. Hooykas (Prof. Hinzler’s own teacher) did their research), they also had to copy the originals. So, of the thousands of palm-leaf manuscripts kept in Leiden Museum, Hinzler affirmed that the only originals are the ones offered as gifts and that these are relatively few in number compared to the number of copied manuscripts. He added that most of the manuscripts are in fact stored in the Documentation Center in Denpasar. Another Balinese palm-leaf manuscripts reseracher named Sugi Lanus, when met at the same location, explained that in 1929 the Dutch had a project to type out Balinese palm-leaf manuscripts. Manuscripts owned by Balinese people were leant to the Dutch by the Kirtya tema of curators. The curators consisted of nine Brahmin
priests (pedanda) and two Dutch researchers. The manuscripts were copied on the spot and six copies were made of each manuscript, pne of whch was given to Kirtya. Therefor the most current copies of the palm-leaf manuscripts in Leiden Museum actually also exist in Gedong Kirtya Museum. Today, it is unknown who the owners of the original palm-leaf manuscripts were, which memebr of their family is storing them now, where they are stored or whether they are damaed or not. Many Balinese people do not even take care of their manuscripts. Sugi Lanus is currently checking 260 original manuscripts in the home of a Brahmin priest and 80 percent of the lontar are in very worrying condition. “Thankfully, some of the original Balinese palmleaf manuscripts have been typed or copied, so there is proof. Besides, some manuscripts in the Netherlands are just the backup copies of the ones in Bali”, he added. Sugi Lanus asserted that currently there are still approximately 2,850 original Balinese palm-leaf manuscripts stored in Document Center on Jalan Juanda, Denpasar, collected by some Balinese literati. The Bali Museum also has about 50 original Balinese palm-leaf manuscripts. Now, any customary villages or parties being confused and wishing to find the original manuscripts can check directly with the Document Center. Moreover, Sugi Lanus also claimed to have all the copies. For those wishing to really know, he claimed to be ready to
show the manuscripts requested in his database. Some customary villages in Bali are in confusion to arrange awig-awig (customary village bylaw) because they do not find the original palm-leaf manuscript used as the reference. When asked about the establishment of Lontar Museum at Dukuh Penaban village, he said that any village can build community museum. It is a positive and new phenomenon in the development of Balinese literature. In the community of this village alone, there have been about 400 palm-leaf manuscripts. Later on, they will be added with other borrowed manuscripts to be exhibited at this location so that they can be well maintained. If collected all, the plan to build the Lontar Museum at Dukuh Penaban is ready with 700 manuscripts. If the district government of Karangasem truly wants to build a palm-leaf manuscript museum as well, according to him who is also a founding team of Lontar Museum of Dukuh Penaban, there is no intention to make a competition in building a museum. However, it should mutually complement. “Later, we will do what is not worked on by the district government. In a palm-leaf manuscript museum, there will be several packages of activities. For example, there are activities of transcribing Balinese script on palm leaves, workshop on the making of palm-leaf manuscript. Volcanic seismicity continues to decline in the past weeks
AMLAPURA - The volcanic seismicity of Mount Agung over the last week, has continued to decline. Despite the decrease in volcanic activity, the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) is still conducting evaluations to determine whether the alert level for Mount Agung should be lowered from level II ‘watch’ to level II ‘advisory’. Subdivision Head of Eastern Region Volcanology, Devy Kamil Syahbana, said on Saturday (Nov. 18) that the seismicity from November 12 until today has continued to decline. However, the seismicity is very shallow and in low frequencies and blowing has been recorded in the last wee, though admitted the numbers have not been significant, she said. “Spasmodic tremors are still being recorded. This indicates that there is still magmatic fluid flow from the depth, but amount does nto appear to be significant. Deformation of the mountain tends to remain stationary. Significant deformation pattern both inflation and deflation, were previously observed in August -October 2017”, she explained. Devy Syahbana said that based on the results of satellite monitoring, there is still thermal energy on the surface of the crater, but has not undergone a significant change. On November 14, a satellite recorded a slight expansion in one of the smoke exit holes at coordinates 8.3436, 115.5093. Syahbana added that smoke from the crater has been observed to reach heights of 700 meters in the last week. The increased height in the smoke plumes is caused by two things. First there are internal factors such as the emergence of low frequency of earthquakes and hot fluid from the magma that is still surfacing as blows of heat. Second are external factors such as rain that can affect the thickness or height of the observed smoke. “The results of water temperature measurements in
the springs around Mount Agung have not shown any significant change”, said Devy Syahbana. Furthermore, she said that movement of magma in the body of Mount Agung is still observed visually and recorded instrumentally while the intensity of the movement has tended to decline in the past week. The alert level for Mount Agung is currently still at Level III (watch). “We conduct careful evaluations every day and the alert level can change according to the amount of activity and the threat that Mount Agung could erupt”, she said. When asked about rumours that the alert level for Mount Agung will be lowered to level II ‘advisory’ on November 28th, Devy Syahbana siad that this was not true, explaining that her agency never schedules increases or decreases in alert levels ahead of time as this depends on present volcanic activity. “ We cannot ascertain ahead of time what the changes will be. Dog with rabies bites 12 people in Gianyar Market
GIANYAR - People living around Gianyar Market were surprised by a recent case of a rapid dog gone wild. A large brown stray dog started spreading the deadly rabies virus on Wednesday (Nov. 15) and as soon as animal health officers from Gianyar Agriculture Agency were alerted, they had the dog put down. Jero Wayan Siki was one of the victims of the rapid dog. This 55-year-old woman who sells rice paddies (ketupat) and tofu door to door every day, was bitten on Wednesday around 09:00 in the area of Harum Fajar store. Jero Wayan Siki was carrying tofu on her head and was shocked when the dog suddenly leapt at her right foot. “Actually I did not bother the dog at all when I walked by”, she explained when met on Friday (Nov. 17). Siki who is a resident of Lekok hamlet, Teges, Gianyar suffered bite wounds on the back of her right leg. At the time, she thought the bite was not severe, but when she arrived home, she saw that she was bleeding. “ I immediately washed the wound with soap and water”, she said. When she told her husband and his family about the incident, she was advised to get a rabies vaccine (VAR) at the nearest public health center. The bite wound marked by two holes where the dog’s teeth had punctured her flesh was not sever and did not requires stitches, though she was given a vaccine. “ I should have a medical check-up in five days”, she added. Jero Wayan Siki said that she hopes that the stray dogs in Gianyar Market will be rounded up, because she works there almost every day. “I will be scared of being bitten again if I see stray dogs” she said. Between Tuesday (Nov. 14) and Thursday (Nov. 16) some 12 people were reportedly bitten by the dog at Gianyar Public Market and were observed to have received VAR injections from the public health center. However, it is thought that there may have more bite incidents as the rapid dog was wandering around an open public space. When contacted separately, Animal Health Section Head of the Gianyar Agriculture Agency, Ketut Ariyasa, confirmed that the stray dog that had bitten people at the Gianyar Market was carrying the rabies virus. “ The dog was put down and brain samples showed that the dog had been carrying rabies”, he said. To follow up on this incident, the Gianyar Agriculture Agency has been following their SOP and a total of 143 dogs in the area around the market have been vaccinated again. Woman accuses U.S. Senator Al Franken of unwanted groping, kiss
WASHINGTON - A radio broadcaster accused U.S. Senator Al Franken on Thursday of touching her breasts while she slept and forcing a kiss on her in 2006 when he was still a comedian and the two were preparing to perform before U.S. troops in the Middle East. Anchor Leeann Tweeden related her experience in a first-person account on the website of Los Angeles station KABC amid outrage over numerous reports of sexual misconduct by powerful men from Hollywood to Capitol Hill. Tweeden said Franken wrote a skit that included a kiss between the two and said he insisted upon rehearsing it, which she at first resisted. “He repeated that actors really need to rehearse everything and that we must practice the kiss. I said ‘OK’ so he would stop badgering me,” she wrote. “We did the line leading up to the kiss and then he came at me, put his hand on the back of my head, mashed his lips against mine and aggressively stuck his tongue in my mouth.” She said she pushed Franken away but felt disgusted and violated. Reuters was unable to independently verify Tweeden’s account. Tweeden also said Franken groped her while she slept during their flight home on a military plane. “I felt violated all over again. Embarrassed. Belittled. Humiliated,” Tweeden wrote. “How dare anyone grab my breasts like this and think it’s funny?” She posted a photo someone had taken of Franken mugging for a photo with his hands on the flak jacket that covered her breasts. “I certainly don’t remember the rehearsal for the skit in the same way, but I send my sincerest apologies to Leeann. George Clooney makes TV return with ‘Catch-22,’ two decades after ER
LOS ANGELES - George Clooney will make his return to television in a serialized adaptation of “Catch-22,” Paramount Television said on Thursday, nearly 20 years after he left hit show “ER” to become one of film’s biggest names. Clooney will direct and star in the six-episode series, based on U.S. author Joseph Heller’s darkly comedic 1961 novel “Catch-22,” for Viacom Inc’s Paramount Television and Anonymous Content, shooting in early 2018, the studio said. The show has not yet been acquired by a network for distribution but is likely to draw eager bidders given Clooney’s involvement. “Catch-22” follows a U.S. soldier named Yossarian during World War Two, who is infuriated that his own army keeps raising the number of missions that a soldier must
complete to be released from duty. Yossarian’s only way to avoid the missions is to declare insanity, but the only way to prove insanity is a willingness to embark on dangerous missions, thus creating the novel’s absurd ‘catch-22.’ Clooney, 56, will play Yossarian’s commander, Colonel Cathcart. No other cast has yet been announced. The actor’s move to television comes on the heels of Oscar-winning stars such as Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Julia Roberts, Robert De Niro and Michael Douglas,
who have all taken on small screen projects in recent years. World’s largest aircraft rips and collapses
BEDFORDSHIRE - A woman has been injured after the world’s largest aircraft came loose from its moorings, causing it to rip and deflate. Airlander 10, a hybrid airship that is part-plane, collapsed in Cardington Airfield, Bedfordshire, following the incident at about 9.30am on Saturday. The woman was taken to hospital as a precaution after she suffered minor injuries. The mishap follows the £25m aircraft’s first flight in May after it crashed in August last year. During that incident, in which no one was injured, the 50ft-long aircraft nose-dived and crashed, severely damaging its cockpit. Manufacturer Hybrid Air Vehicles (HAV) is set to launch an investigation into why the aircraft, which is the length of a football pitch, broke free but said its hull was designed to rip open and deflate in the event of coming loose. In a statement, it said: “The aircraft was not flying at the time of the incident. Our initial assessment is that the aircraft broke free from its mooring mast for reasons that will be investigated.
“The aircraft has a safety system which operates automatically in circumstances of the aircraft breaking free of its mast, and is designed to rip open the hull and deflate the aircraft. “This is a safety feature to ensure our aircraft minimises any potential damage to its surroundings in these circumstances. The aircraft is now deflated and secure on the edge of the airfield. The fuel and helium inside the Airlander have been made safe.” The firm also said another person had suffered minor injuries while dealing with the aftermath of the incident. HAV added: “We are testing a brand new type of aircraft and incidents of this nature can occur during this phase of development.
“We will assess the cause of the incident and the extent of repairs needed to the aircraft in the next few weeks.”It comes after Twitter users expressed their delight at seeing the Airlander flying on Friday, with one calling the sight “fabulous”. The Airlander, which uses helium to fly and can carry 10 tonnes of cargo, can be used for surveillance, passenger travel and delivering aid, according to HAV.(rtr) News can also be heard in “Bali Image” at Global Radio FM 96.5 from 9.30 until 10.00 am.
