CALIFORNIA - Walt Disney Co’s John Skipper resigned on Monday as president of ESPN, the company’s most important network, due to a problem with addiction.
“I have struggled for many years with a substance addiction,” Skipper, who was also Disney Media Networks cochairman, said in a statement. “I have decided that the most important thing I can do right now is to take care of my problem.” George Bodenheimer will be the sports network’s acting chairman for the next 90 days, ESPN said in a statement. He had been its president from 1998 to 2011 and executive chairman until May 2014. An ESPN spokeswoman declined to comment on who may be considered as Skipper’s successor. Skipper’s departure comes
within a few days after Disney struck a deal to buy film, television and international businesses from Rupert Murdoch’s TwentyFirst Century Fox Inc for $52.4 billion. Skipper, who became ESPN president in 2012, has led the network to a series of long-term distribution agreements with major rights holders, including the National Basketball Association and Major League Baseball. But ESPN has also struggled with subscriber losses and ratings declines. Last month, it said it would lay off about 150 employees. Disney Chief Executive Officer Bob Iger, who extended his
stay at the company through 2021 to oversee integration of Fox’s businesses, lauded Skipper’s candor and backed his decision. Disney shares were down 0.2 percent at $111.09 on Monday afternoon. (rtr)

LOS ANGELES - When director Ridley Scott decided to remove Kevin Spacey from his film “All the Money in the World” and reshoot it with Christopher Plummer, he did not just pull off an extraordinary feat. Plummer’s performance as U.S. oil billionaire J. Paul Getty also subtly changed the tone of the movie about the sensational 1973 kidnapping of Getty’s 16-year-old grandson. “There is a coolness to Kevin. That’s his style, even when he’s being emotional,” Scott said in an interview. “This man (Plummer) has enormous charm, and when you apply that charm to such, sometimes really hard, words, it makes it much more interesting,” he said. Part biography and part thriller, “All the Money in the World” dramatizes the kidnapping in Italy of John Paul Getty III and his grandfather’s refusal to pay a $17 million ransom despite being the richest man in the world.
In a rare move, Scott announced in November that he would reshoot the finished film with Plummer after allegations of sexual misconduct against Spacey, saying he feared negative publicity would damage the film’s prospects. Spacey issued an apology for the first reported incident, involving actor Anthony Rapp. He has since been accused of misconduct by more than 30 men and dropped from the next season of Netflix TV series “House of Cards.” Reuters has been unable to verify the allegations against Spacey. The Oscar-winning actor is seeking unspecified treatment, and a representative on Monday did not respond to a request for comment. The Sony Pictures, movie, now starring Plummer along with original cast members Michelle Williams and Mark Wahlberg, will be released in Europe later this week and in the United States on Dec. 25.
Plummer, 88, sought to bring humanity to Getty, although he said he “made no pretense at research” for the role ahead of a nine-day reshoot in London and Rome in mid-November. He did not see Spacey’s original scenes. “I had to follow the writing, all in a very short space of time,” Plummer said. “I saw him more vulnerable than the script suggested ... so he would have some dimension and some humanity.” Plummer, Scott and Williams were nominated last week for Golden Globe awards. Scott said he was initially drawn to the project not so much because of the kidnapping by the ‘Ndrangheta, the Calabrian mafia, who cut off their victim’s ear, but because of the elder Getty. “He’s an enigmatic character who isolated himself through wealth. When somebody becomes that wealthy, all the friends start evaporating, so he was an isolated individual,” the British director said. Getty died in 1976. (rtr)

Lead singer of South Korean boy band SHINee dies in possible suicide
SEOUL - The lead singer of top South Korean boy band SHINee died in hospital on Monday in a possible suicide that robs fans of the globally-famous K-Pop genre of one of its biggest stars. Kim Jong-hyun, 27, was found unconscious next to burning briquettes on a frying pan inside a serviced residence in the South Korean capital Seoul, a police official told Reuters. “His sister was first to call the police assuming that he might commit suicide,” said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive subject. Yonhap news agency said the singer sent a final message to his sister asking her to “let me go.” Kim spent nearly a decade in his leading role as one of five members of SHINee, one of the
most popular boy bands in the country, as well as a solo artist. His death is a blow to the massive worldwide fan base that Korea’s “K-pop” music has attracted in recent years. Thousands of Korean children dream of becoming household names like rapper Psy, whose 2012 “Gangnam Style” video was a global YouTube hit, often putting
up with punishing schedules in the hope of one day making it big in the music industry. Tourists need to be better informed about situation of Mt. Agung
DENPASAR - Foreing tourists have a different understanding of what to expect in terms of the condition of Mount Agung. The words “eruption” and “earthquake” are often understood to mean that there is necessarily a serious impact. Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika brought this to light during a meeting with the Alliance of Tourism Society (AMPB) on the Bouty Cruise ship on Sunday night (Dec 17).
The center for vulcanology refers to volcanic tremors as seismicity, however this term is translated into English as ‘earthquake’ which evokes a sense of serious natural disaster. Similarly the word ‘eruption’ is assumed to mean a discharge of magma from the crater of the volcano, while in fact the eruptions that have occurred are in fact small amounts of ash being discharged into the air. These differences in understanding have a seriously negative impact on the assumptions that potential tourists make about current conditions in Bali. Made Mangku Pastika also stressed that the warning alert level is only applicable to a radius of 8 kilometers from the top of Mount Agung. Beyind this radius it is perfectly safe. Of the 78 villages in Karangasem, only 22 villages are affected as they are located within the radius of 8-10 kilometers. So, the other 56 villages in Karangasem are still safe. The island of Bali consists of 716 villages, and only 22 of these villages are subject to the level IV warning alert. The center for volcanology (PVMBG) has stated that the warning alert only applies to the radius of 8 -10 km from the top pf Mount Agung while the rest of the island is safe. The level 4 indicates a possibility of eruption and while many imagine an eruption similar to the one in
1963 (when the mountain was at level 5), in reality this is highly unlikely as the crater of Mount Agung has widened five times larger than it was at that time. Scientifically speaking, there are eruptions occurring through the ring of fire in Indonesia which means that the power of the eruptions are divided. The governor then appealed to tourism entrepreneurs to take the current situation as an opportunity to introspect and make improvements to tourism facilities so that Bali’s tourism will be improved in the future. “This time can be used to become more resilient”, he said. Chairman of the AMPB, Gusti Kade Sutawa, added that the most important thing now is for everyone to work together to overcome this crisis – particularly the some odd 20 tourism associations in Bali. The recovery process for tourism needs to be accelerated, otherwise this crisis could have grave impacts on the tourism sector, he said. (kmb19)

Lack of volunteers at evacuation posts AMLAPURA - There are still reports of evacuation posts lacking food stocks however apparently the problem is not so much a lack of food as a lack of volunteers to manage the food stocks. The unloading and distribution of food is currently being handled by Indonesian military personnel (TNI) but as Commander of the Mt. Agung Disaster Taskforce, Benny Rahadian, admitted on Monday (Dec. 18) they cannot handle this task alone. Benny Rahadian explained that the number of volunteers, particularly for unloading and distributing foods has declined sharply since the alert level for Mount Agung was raised to level 4 again at the end of November. Currently, there are only a few volunteers form related agencies who are lending a hand to the TNI officers and sometimes there are none at all. The TNI themselves face some obstacles as they lack personnel and vehicles that would allow them to reach all the evacuations posts. “The TNI has been serving this situation for the last three months. We are worried if this problems persists as our personnel are doing the best they can but will be blamed of food stocks do not reach the evacuees”, said Commander Benny Rahadian. As commander of the taskforce, Rahadian has submitted a proposal to the leadership of the district of Bangli that local residents be recruited as volunteers. If necessary the evacuees will also be recruited for this task. It would help if they were provided with daily incentives, however there is no legal basis for enabling this. The local government has drafted a plan to address this issue and provide additional income to the volunteers while facilitating the distribution of food stocks. “The recruits can be evacuees or residents of areas near the evacuation posts. The most important thing is that they are near the food stocks that need to be delivered, he added. from refugees or residents around the post. Most importantly, they are close to the logistics,” he said. When asked about the possibility of giving aid to the evacuees in the form of cash so they could buy their own food and such, Rahadian explained that this is not effective and ends up costing a lot more. “If every family is given IDR 500,000 for example, and we multiply that by 71,000 the amount is much higher than what is currently being spent to acquire food stocks”, said Rahadian. Discussions about the possibility of providing cash directly to the evacuees came up after it became known how much was being spent on purchasing, transporting and distributing food to the evacuees, particularly given the lack of volunteers. Such discussions gathered steam when perishable foods were going bad before being used. Clearly a a suitable solution needs to be arrived at because nobody knows how long people will need to remain in evacuation. (kmb31)
Mount Agung eruption, Chief of Bali Police confirms that Bali is safe
DENPASAR - The ranks of Bali Police held a consolidation assembly at Putputan Margarana Sqaure, Renon, East Denpasar on Monday (Dec. 18), in preparation for of Christmas and New Year’s Eve 2018. Chief of the Bali Police, Dr. Petrus Reinhard Golose, announced that he had had a meeting with the Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources about conditions related to Mount Agung. During the meeting it was reiterated that the disaster-prone area (KBR) lies only within a radius of 10 km form the mountain. Thus ar-

I’d like to emphasise that it is safe to visit Bali”, said Police Chief Golose ,adding that tourists should not hesitate to come to Bali. Apparently there has been a misunderstanding about the alert level for Mount Agung as people think it applies to the whole island. “I’d like to emphasise that the alert level only applies to within 10 kilometers of the mountain, all other areas remain normal. It is false to say that the whole of Bali has been hit by disaster”, he said. Meanwhile, Bali’s economy relies on tourism, with incorrect infor-
mation spreading on social media throughout the world through social media, the impact is very harmful. “We are conducting Operation Aman Nusa at that location (10 kilometers) only”, said this two-star general. The consolidation assembly was held to verify the preparedness of the troops and their equipment, and additionally the chief and deputy chief of Bali Police, Gede Alit Widana, and other officials were presented with a car race and marital arts demonstrations. From worm toilets to solar lamps, social innovations keep women safer in rural India
MUMBAI - Going from village to village in India to promote the use of toilets that use worms to break down fecal matter, the team from the Institute for Transformative Technologies (ITT) found young girls to be their biggest champions. The girls, who came with their mothers, quickly understood the merits of these so-called Tiger Toilets, and were eager to have them installed in their homes for privacy and safety. “We found the family is very influenced by the girl child’s opinion on these toilets, and that they are also instrumental in changing the family’s behaviour, which is key to their use and adoption,” said Nupur Kapoor, head of ITT’s India operations. “Young girls are better able to communicate how the toilets address their concerns of privacy and safety, which older women may be shy or ashamed to talk about,” she said. Hundreds of Tiger Toilets have been installed in rural homes in India. They are among several social innovations that are benefiting villagers while also empowering women and making them feel safer, even if these are not the primary goals. About 60 percent of India’s population of 1.25 billion people does not have access to adequate sanitation. This has led to open defecation, which causes tens of thousands of diarrhoeal deaths and millions of cases of chronic malnutrition every year. It also poses the risk of sexual and physical attack for women and girls when they go out in the fields to relieve themselves, particularly in villages which also lack lighting.

Crossings of passengers and motorcycles decrease in Bali Strait
NEGARA - The number of vehicles and passengers entering Bali via Gilimanuk Harbor after the warning alert level of Mount Agung declined since the end of September and two months onwards. This condition is estimated to be the impact of Mount Agung eruption. However, the ASDP predicted there will be a surge of vehicles ahead of Christmas and New Year. From the data compiled in ASDP Ketapang, there was an average decrease of 6,000 passengers during October and November, exactly after the activities of Mount Agung increased. Before September, the number of passengers reached 36,369 people, 67,631 motorcycles and 99,139 cars. Meanwhile, during October and November the number of passengers was recorded to reach 30,526 people and 30,503 people. This also applied to motorcycles that dropped by 19,000 in October and 16,000 units in November. However, vehicles actually jumped to an average of 2,000 units per month. Operations Manager of ASDP Gilimanuk, Heru Wahyono, said on Sunday (Dec. 17) that there was a decrease in the number of passengers and motorcycles, but ASDP predicted there would be an increase during the upcoming Christmas and New Year holidays. “Now, it is getting normal and conducive. Many people are going to Bali,” explained Heru.
He pointed out that during October and November the number of car coming into Bali even jumped to approximately 2,000 units. In addition to the impact of airport closure, it also proves that many tourists use cars and buses to travel to Bali. ASDP predicted there will be a surge of vehicles both entering and exiting Bali by the end of this year. “Our prediction is a four percent increase for passengers, two percent for motorcycles and four percent for cars. At that time, long weekend holiday is begun,” he added. Long weekend holiday of Christmas and New Year is expected to trigger a spike in service users both in Gilimanuk and Ketapang. Agung Emergency Disaster Preparedness Post in Bangli, Nengah Sukarta, said on Monday (Dec. 18) that the stock of LPG and side dishes remains available in the command post warehouse and only enough to meet the needs of refugees for the next two days. When met on Monday afternoon, Sukarta explained that logistics stock especially rice for the refugees so far remains safe. With the remaining 17 tons of stocks, it will be enough to meet the needs of 900 refugees over the next month. “With the current number of refugees, the need of rice reaches 11.4 tons per month,” he explained. DENPASAR — An explosion of gas balloon in a car showroom located on Jalan Teuku Umar area, West Denpasar, on Monday afternoon (Dec. 18), claimed six victims. The six victims had been taken to Sanglah Hospital. The six victims are Rino Iswandi, I Kadek Subadra, Saroni, Umbu, Tolib and Agung. One of them is the head of the branch office, namely Rino Iswandi.
According to the car showroom supervisor, Wahyu, the incident occurred around 14:00. Originally, the showroom officers wanted to install a gas balloon for promotion of one of their car brands. The balloon size is quite large, but it failed to fly. Whether due to technical error or not, the balloon suddenly exploded. “Probably, there was a technician’s ignorance during the installation. When raising the gas balloon, it
was watched together, including by our head of branch office,” he said. He was reluctant to give more comments. Currently, the six victims are still being handled by medical team of Sanglah Hospital. YANGON - At the end of an illustrated book written for children in Myanmar, a much-loved village teacher who has planted many trees and a beautiful garden tells his students that the time has come for him to leave them. “Oh students,” he says. “I won’t be here but you will still have the trees to give you fruit and shade and take care of you every year. So you will remember me and not be so sad.” The author of “The Gardener” was Wa Lone, one of two Reuters journalists who were arrested in Yangon last week and accused of violating the country’s colonial-era Official Secrets Act. Wa Lone, 31, and Kyaw Soe Oo, 27, had worked on Reuters coverage of a crisis that has seen some 650,000 Rohingya Muslims flee from a fierce military crackdown on militants in the western state of Rakhine. They have not been seen for a week. “The Gardener” is one of a series published by The Third Story Project, a venture co-founded by Wa Lone that produces books in Burmese, other Myanmar languages and English and distributes them free to children across the country. On the project’s website, Wa Lone says the aim was to promote tolerance and harmony in an increasingly multicultural and diverse world. “Lack of understanding has led to conflicts between different communities and finally destroyed peace and stability,” he wrote. “I love every Third Story book because they address important issues for future generations.” In Wa Lone’s story, which also carries a message of the importance of protecting the environment, the teacher scatters seeds from his bicycle on the journey to school and years later they have grown into huge trees. He also plants a garden with his students and, there, he tells them stories. He leaves them one day to help another village, where all the trees had been cut down and there was no fruit, water or shelter for the people and animals. The last page of the story shows a figure in the distance and the words: “The teacher said goodbye to his students and rode his old bicycle down the road toward the other village.” (rtr)
SYDNEY - Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull on Tuesday named a new attorney general and promoted two junior lawmakers from rural Queensland state to his cabinet in a reshuffle he hopes will bolster his flagging popularity. Australian leaders often revamp cabinets before the start of a new year but for centre-right Turnbull the move is an attempt to salvage his leadership, ravaged by dismal opinion polls. Last month, Turnbull’s ruling Liberal-National coalition made its worst showing in a Queensland election in more than a decade, when it won 34 percent of the vote as Pauline Hanson’s populist One Nation clawed into its conservative base. A large number of marginal seats in the country’s third most populous state of Queensland often give its voters a crucial say in deciding federal elections. The reshuffle was sparked by the resignation of Attorney General George Brandis from the Senate. Turnbull said he would ask Brandis to be the country’s next High Commissioner, or ambassador, to the United Kingdom. Turnbull gave cabinet positions to Queenslanders John McVeigh and David Littleproud, who both took office 18 months ago.

Central banks, trade and bubbles threaten the 2018 status quo
LONDON - After a year of relatively healthy global economic growth, economists are predicting pretty much the same for 2018 -- a neither too-hot nor too-cold Goldilocks scenario, but with little sight of the three bears. The idea is that all is pretty much on track for growth that will be stronger than in 2017. Part of this may come from the fact that forecasters generally got it wrong last year, underclubbing this year’s economic performance, particularly for the euro zone and Japan. The International Monetary Fund, for example, saw 2017 global growth at 3.4 percent with advanced economies advancing 1.8 percent. It now reckons them at 3.6 percent and 2.2 percent. It had the euro zone and Japan growing 1.5 percent and 0.6 percent, respectively. It now has them at 2.1 percent and 1.5 percent. “Faster growth is reaching roughly two-thirds of the world’s population,” the IMF said in a December blog post. This performance has made some economists optimistic. Nomura is among the more bullish: “Global growth has far more self-reinforcing characteristics at present than at any time over the last 20-30 years.” But Goldilock’s bears do have a habit of showing up. There are huge numbers of potential political and economic risks to the status quo. But as in the fairy tale, let’s go with just three: central banks, trade, and bubbles. In the first case, the danger is that there will be a policy mistake, squeezing debtors. The second relates to renewed U.S. protectionism or anger
over Chinese exports triggering tit-fortat, growth-stifling trade barriers. The third is about sudden market losses that dry up spending and demand. BEAR ONE IN THE WOODS Part of 2017’s global economic success was put down to a combination of extraordinarily loose monetary policy and competent management by central banks of their attempts to wean the world off such largesse. Entering 2018 the U.S. Federal Reserve is lining up for three more hikes, the European Central Bank is slowly cutting back on its asset purchases, and China is increasing rates. All of this is being carefully flagged by the policymakers, but mistakes can happen and any significant shift of gear could cause a sharp retrenchment in consumer and corporate spending. The amount of U.S. corporate debt outstanding, for example, is nearly $8.8 trillion, according to Sifma, the U.S. securities industry group. That is up 35 percent since 2010 and a major
driver behind corporate expansion. “Financial stability risks pose a bigger threat to the continuation of the (growth) cycle than price stability risks,” Morgan Stanley co-head of economics Chetan Ahya wrote in a 2018 outlook, saying U.S. corporates were the most exposed to higher interest rates. This implies that central bank tightening to curb overly robust growth or inflation risks creating a credit squeeze -- hence the caution in Washington, Frankfurt, Beijing and Tokyo. BEAR TWO IN THE WOODS U.S. President Donald Trump’s 2016 election campaign was peppered with “America First” rhetoric and a dollop of belligerence about other countries. In office, the Trump administration has done a few things in the name of U.S. interests to upset multilateralists. It has, for example, launched an investigation into steel imports, blocked the appointment of judges at the World Trade Organization, and withdrawn the United
States from a now 11- member Pacific Rim trade pact. Other measures have not progressed as far, notably the threat to withdraw from the North American Free Trade Agreement, and the pledge to bring China to heel over its allegedly unfair trade practices. But the U.S. trade deficit increased to $43.5 billion despite growth-driven U.S. exports. The U.S.-China deficit dropped a bit but was still $34.6 billion in Beijing’s favour. “The massive TRADE deficits must go down quickly,” Trump tweeted after a trip to Asia in November. Were rhetoric to turn to practice, the economic climate of 2018 could quickly turn chilly. According to the U.S. Conference board, China’s economic exposure to the United States is nearly five times higher than the U.S. exposure to China. That would suggest that any impositions of trade barriers could hit growth in China that is behind much of the wealth in exporting nations like Germany. It is far from just a U.S.-China matter: the World Bank estimates world trade accounts for 52 percent of world GDP, more than doubling
its clout over the past 50 years ago. BEAR THREE IN THE WOODS Bubbles are hard to gauge until they have popped (there is a tendency to say “this time it is different”, until it isn’t). But if economists have learnt one thing from this century’s financial market crashes it is that they bring the house down with them. The World Bank estimates that the global growth rate fell from around 4.4 percent in 2000 to some 1.9 percent in 2001, when the dot com bubble burst, and that the financial crisis prompted a plunge from a roughly 4.3 percent growth rate in 2007 to a 1.7 percent contraction in 2009. What happens is that sudden losses in financial instruments cause companies and consumers to stop spending, leading to tumbling growth, layoffs, and debt defaults. There are plenty of examples of assets that have soared continually and steeply in the past year: Bitcoin’s staggering rise is but the most obvious. Albert Edwards, a Societe Generale strategist who is always on the lookout for bubble-poppers, reckons that with stock markets in the stratosphere, it won’t take much to reverse things. It may be just some as “boring” as some unexpectedly poor profits, he suggests. (rtr)

DENPASAR - Indonesian police have arrested an Australian, an American and a Malaysian on the holiday island of Bali for drugs offences, the latest foreigners to run afoul of some of the world’s strictest laws against narcotics. The three men, who were arrested in separate cases, appeared before the media at a briefing, dressed in orange prison garb, their faces concealed by balaclava, with armed police officers standing guard. It was not immediately clear if any of the three, who were identified only by their initials, would face the death penalty if convicted. Authorities found methamphetamine and the party drug ecstasy hidden in a plastic bottle and another container in the luggage of the Australian after he arrived on a flight from Bangkok on Monday, the customs office said.

The U.S. government has assessed with a “very high level of confidence” that a hacking entity known as Lazarus Group, which works on behalf of the North Korean government, carried out
the WannaCry attack, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss details of the government’s investigation. Lazarus Group is widely believed by security researchers and U.S. officials to have been responsible for the 2014 hack of Sony Pictures Entertainment that destroyed files, leaked corporate communications online and led to the departure of several top studio executives. North Korean government representatives could not be immediately reached for comment. The country has repeatedly denied responsibility for WannaCry and called other allegations about cyber attacks a smear campaign. Washington’s public condemnation does not include any indictments or name specific individuals, the administration official said, adding the shaming was designed to hold Pyongyang accountable for its actions and “erode and undercut their ability to launch attacks.” The accusation comes as worries mount about North Korea’s hacking capabilities and its nuclear weapons program. The miners had been digging out sand and stones from a steep cliff when they were engulfed, Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said in a statement. “There could be more miners buried by the landslide, but it’s unclear because the number working at the mine is also unclear,” said Nugroho, noting that despite previous landslides in the area the practice had persisted. Heavy equipment had been brought in to help search for victims at the site, about 50 km (31 miles) north of the city of Yogyakarta. In many parts of Indonesia, there is little or no regulation of so-called traditional mining, resulting in poor safety standards. Nugroho said mining had persisted in the area even though landslides had occurred there before. Sitting on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, Indonesia has nearly 130 active volcanoes, more than any other country. Developing Lake Toba tourism through geopark concept
JAKARTA - The government of North Sumatra Province has been aggressively developing the Lake Toba region into a world tourism destination in Indonesia through the concept of geopark. The geopark concept was introduced in late 90s following the declaration of the International Symposium on the Conservation of the Geological Heritage organized under the auspices of UNESCO. Conservation of geological heritage aims to protect and promote Earth heritage sites through the sustainable local development of territories containing abiotic nature of significant value. In an effort to develop Lake Toba tourism region on the basis of geopark concept, the North Sumatra provincial government invited 48 ambassadors of friendly countries for a meeting, called Lake Toba Summit on December 16, 2017 in Prapat. The 48 ambassadors attending the Lake Toba Sumit were among other things from Saudi Arabia, India, Jordan, Turkey, Yemen, Iran, Iraq, Egypt, Italy, Russia, and 38 other countries. North Sumatra Governor Erry Nuradi remarked in the provincial capital of Medan that the presence of 48 ambassadors in the summit would further convince the local government that in the future Lake Toba will increasingly be known
to the world a a leading tourist destination in the province. “The provincial government invited the ambassadors of friendly countries for the summit to introduce Lake Toba, and informed them that the potential of North Sumatra also strongly supports investors from their countries to invest here,” Governor Nuradi said. With their presence in Lake Toba, the ambassador can see the potential business in the region, so they are expected to bring more investors from their countries to invest in Lake Toba tourism. In the meantime, North Sumatra Environment Office Chief Hidayati explained that geopark-based tourism is an important point in supporting the development as well as increasing foreign tourist visits. Geopark contains historical values that can then be introduced to the wider community both within and outside the country. Hidayati explained that the tourism of Lake Toba is developed with the basis of gopark because its value is more than just a tourism. “Geopark will certainly support tourism, but tourism is not necessarily based on Geopark,” Hidayati said. Geopark has a scientific value from the process of the formation of Lake Toba Caldera where in it many things can be explained. Hence, the government is mak-
ing all-out efforts to accelerate the development of the Lake Toba area into a world tourism destination in Indonesia. Lake Toba has been designated by the government as a tourist destination of international standard in an effort to improve the living conditions of the local population. In an effort to develop the area into an international-standard tourist destination, the Lake Toba Tourism Authority Board (BPODT) requires a budget of Rp21 trillion. BPODT Finance Director Faisal has remarked that such a big amount of budget to support the development of Lake Toba to attract one million tourists in 2019 must be backed by not only the central government but also the local government and private parties. A budget of Rp21 trillion will be required from the government and private parties to develop the Lake Toba area into a world-class tourism destination, with a target to attract one million tourists in 2019, Faisal reiterated. The number of tourist visits to Lake Toba and North Sumatra had reached 197 thousand in September 2017, while the figure was recorded at 240 thousand visitors in 2016. A Historic Site in Gianyar GIANYAR - There is a new tourist attraction in Gianyar named Wasan Temple. It is a historical site recently discovered. Wasan site complex is estimated to originate from the thirteenth to fourteenth centuries based on the style of the statue found. It is situated at Belahtanah hamlet, Batuan Kaler, Sukawati, Gianyar, or about 16 km from Denpasar. Jero Mangku Wayan Lasiaja said that the location of the Wasan temple is at the Puseh Temple of Wasan, so that when going into the temple area must pass through the split gates (candi bentar). Ferrari could lead others out of F1, warns Marchionne
MARANELLO - Ferrari could lead other Formula One teams into an alternative championship if the sport becomes too much like the U.S.-based NASCAR series but hope it does not come to that, chairman Sergio Marchionne has said. Speaking to reporters at the Italian team’s pre-Christmas lunch in Maranello, the Fiat Chrysler chief executive said his previous threats to take Ferrari out of the sport after 2020 should not be taken lightly. He also announced a Feb. 22 launch date for the team’s 2018 car and said Ferrari should be challenging for the title after finishing runners-up to Mercedes this year. Marchionne said Liberty Media,
the U.S.-based company which took over Formula One in January and sidelined former commercial supremo Bernie Ecclestone, was learning the ropes. He took issue, however, with the approach taken by former Ferrari technical director Ross Brawn, the Formula One managing director who won titles with his own Brawn GP in 2009 before serving as Mercedes F1 team boss.
“The thing that most annoys me is that there is an experienced man like Ross Brawn there who is looking for ways that go against the DNA of Formula One,” the Gazzetta dello Sport website quoted Marchionne as saying. “Making cars all the same with simpler and cheaper engines is like NASCAR, it doesn’t interest us,” he added. “We need to find a balanced solution for the future that satisfies
everyone and I think we will do it in time. “Otherwise Ferrari will leave. If they (sceptics) think we are bluffing, they are playing with fire.” Most of the Formula One teams have contracts that expire at the end of 2020 and Marchionne said Ferrari would be able to walk away. “I think that Ferrari has the strength to drag others as well to an alternative championship,” he added. There have been similar threats in the past from Ferrari, before Marchionne’s time, without any of them coming to anything.
Marchionne is a very different character to former Ferrari chairman Luca di Montezemolo, however, and Ecclestone told Reuters in November that he did not consider it an empty threat. The Gazzetta quoted Marchionne as also saying Maserati could follow Alfa Romeo back into Formula One in some capacity, but not yet, while Fiat Chrysler (FCA) would have a presence in some form in the Formula E electric series. Alfa Romeo, part of the FCA stable, have teamed up with Swiss-based Sauber as title partners for 2018. (rtr)
Thomas tips Woods to have strong 2018 Masters CALIFORNIA - Justin Thomas reckons a healthy Tiger Woods will have a good chance of challenging at April’s Masters, while at the same time reserving judgment over the 14-times major champion’s comeback. ROME - Juventus’s fine for an alleged scheme which involved giving tickets to hardcore fans to buy peace on the terraces has been doubled but the ban on club chairman Andrea Agnelli has been reduced, Italy’s soccer federation (FIGC) said on Monday. Agnelli, who is also president of the European Club Association (ECA) and a member of UEFA’s executive committee, was initially suspended for one year in Septem-
ber but the FIGC ruled that his ban should end immediately. However, it increased the fine on Juve from 300,000 to 600,000 euros ($353,670 to 707,340) and Agnelli’s personal fine from 20,000 to 100,000 euros. The Turin club, which has denied wrongdoing, were not immediately available to comment. Investigators had looked into whether the club gave tickets to fans known as ultras to avoid vio-
lence or racial abuse in the stands that might bring fines or docked points. Agnelli, a scion of the family that owns carmaker Fiat Chrysler, said in May he met the ultras to make sure they did not feel discriminated against and to avoid “problems of public order”. Not just me,” he said. “What looked like a desperate situation is becoming a comfortable one. And now people are looking up the table rather than down. The last clubs I took over were tougher to turn around initially,” he said. A Historic Site in Gianyar GIANYAR - There is a new tourist attraction in Gianyar named Wasan Temple. It is a historical site recently discovered. Wasan site complex is estimated to originate from the thirteenth to fourteenth centuries based on the style of the statue found. Ferrari could lead others out of F1, warns Marchionne
MARANELLO - Ferrari could lead other Formula One teams into an alternative championship if the sport becomes too much like the U.S.-based NASCAR series but hope it does not come to that, chairman Sergio Marchionne has said. Speaking to reporters at the Italian team’s pre-Christmas lunch in Maranello, the Fiat Chrysler chief executive said his previous threats to take Ferrari out of the sport after 2020 should not be taken lightly. He also announced a Feb. 22 launch date for the team’s 2018 car and said Ferrari should be challenging for the title after finishing runners-up to Mercedes this year. Marchionne said Liberty Media,
the U.S.-based company which took over Formula One in January and sidelined former commercial supremo Bernie Ecclestone, was learning the ropes. He took issue, however, with the approach taken by former Ferrari technical director Ross Brawn, the Formula One managing director who won titles with his own Brawn GP in 2009 before serving as Mercedes F1 team boss.
“The thing that most annoys me is that there is an experienced man like Ross Brawn there who is looking for ways that go against the DNA of Formula One,” the Gazzetta dello Sport website quoted Marchionne as saying. “Making cars all the same with simpler and cheaper engines is like NASCAR, it doesn’t interest us,” he added. “We need to find a balanced solution for the future that satisfies
everyone and I think we will do it in time. “Otherwise Ferrari will leave. If they (sceptics) think we are bluffing, they are playing with fire.” Most of the Formula One teams have contracts that expire at the end of 2020 and Marchionne said Ferrari would be able to walk away. “I think that Ferrari has the strength to drag others as well to an alternative championship,” he added. There have been similar threats in the past from Ferrari, before Marchionne’s time, without any of them coming to anything.
Marchionne is a very different character to former Ferrari chairman Luca di Montezemolo, however, and Ecclestone told Reuters in November that he did not consider it an empty threat. The Gazzetta quoted Marchionne as also saying Maserati could follow Alfa Romeo back into Formula One in some capacity, but not yet, while Fiat Chrysler (FCA) would have a presence in some form in the Formula E electric series. Alfa Romeo, part of the FCA stable, have teamed up with Swiss-based Sauber as title partners for 2018. (rtr)

Pointing out that several veterans have superb records at Augusta National, Thomas said on Monday that Woods could follow the example set by the likes of Bernhard Langer and Fred Couples. “If he’s healthy, there’s no reason he wouldn’t (play well),” Thomas said in a teleconference call. “There’s a reason Freddie played so well there for so long (and) Langer... because it’s such an advantage knowing the course and the more you play, the world of difference it makes.”

UNITED NATIONS - The United States was further isolated on Monday over President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital when it blocked a United Nations Security Council call for the declaration to be withdrawn.
The remaining 14 council members voted in favor of the Egyptian-drafted resolution, which did not specifically mention the United States or Trump but which expressed “deep regret at recent decisions concerning the status of Jerusalem.” “What we witnessed here in the Security Council is an insult. It won’t be forgotten,” U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said after the vote, adding that it was the first veto cast by the United States in more than six years. “The fact that this veto is being done in defense of American sovereignty and in defense of America’s role in the Middle East peace process is not a source of embarrassment for us; it should be an embarrassment to the remainder of the Security Council,” Haley said. Landslide kills at least 8 Indonesian miners on slope of volcano
JAKARTA - A landslide on the slopes of Indonesia’s Mount Merapi volcano on Java island on Monday killed at least eight people mining sand and stones and injured eight, the country’s disaster mitigation agency said.

U.S. blames North Korea for ‘WannaCry’ cyber attack
WASHINGTON - The Trump administration has publicly blamed North Korea for unleashing the so-called WannaCry cyber attack that crippled hospitals, banks and other companies across the globe earlier this year. “The attack was widespread and cost billions, and North Korea is directly responsible,” Tom Bossert, homeland security adviser to President Donald Trump, wrote in a piece published on Monday night in the Wall Street Journal. “North Korea has acted especially badly, largely unchecked, for more than a decade, and its malicious behavior is growing more egregious,” Bossert wrote. “WannaCry was indiscriminately reckless.” The White House was expected to follow up on Tuesday with a more formal statement blaming Pyongyang, according to a senior administration official. The U.S. government has assessed with a “very high level of confidence” that a hacking entity known as Lazarus Group, which works on behalf of the North Korean government, carried out
the WannaCry attack, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss details of the government’s investigation. Lazarus Group is widely believed by security researchers and U.S. officials to have been responsible for the 2014 hack of Sony Pictures Entertainment that destroyed files, leaked corporate communications online and led to the departure of several top studio executives. North Korean government representatives could not be immediately reached for comment. The country has repeatedly denied responsibility for WannaCry and called other allegations about cyber attacks a smear campaign. Washington’s public condemnation does not include any indictments or name specific individuals, the administration official said, adding the shaming was designed to hold Pyongyang accountable for its actions and “erode and undercut their ability to launch attacks.” The accusation comes as worries mount about North Korea’s hacking capabilities and its nuclear weapons program. The miners had been digging out sand and stones from a steep cliff when they were engulfed, Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said in a statement. “There could be more miners buried by the landslide, but it’s unclear because the number working at the mine is also unclear,” said Nugroho, noting that despite previous landslides in the area the practice had persisted. Heavy equipment had been brought in to help search for victims at the site, about 50 km (31 miles) north of the city of Yogyakarta. In many parts of Indonesia, there is little or no regulation of so-called traditional mining, resulting in poor safety standards. Nugroho said mining had persisted in the area even though landslides had occurred there before. Sitting on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, Indonesia has nearly 130 active volcanoes, more than any other country. The Mount Agung volcano on Bali island, east of Java, has been spewing smoke and ash intermittently for week, disrupting flights to the tourist spot. (rtr)
Developing Lake Toba tourism through geopark concept
JAKARTA - The government of North Sumatra Province has been aggressively developing the Lake Toba region into a world tourism destination in Indonesia through the concept of geopark. The geopark concept was introduced in late 90s following the declaration of the International Symposium on the Conservation of the Geological Heritage organized under the auspices of UNESCO. Conservation of geological heritage aims to protect and promote Earth heritage sites through the sustainable local development of territories containing abiotic nature of significant value. In an effort to develop Lake Toba tourism region on the basis of geopark concept, the North Sumatra provincial government invited 48 ambassadors of friendly countries for a meeting, called Lake Toba Summit on December 16, 2017 in Prapat. The 48 ambassadors attending the Lake Toba Sumit were among other things from Saudi Arabia, India, Jordan, Turkey, Yemen, Iran, Iraq, Egypt, Italy, Russia, and 38 other countries. North Sumatra Governor Erry Nuradi remarked in the provincial capital of Medan that the presence of 48 ambassadors in the summit would further convince the local government that in the future Lake Toba will increasingly be known
to the world a a leading tourist destination in the province. “The provincial government invited the ambassadors of friendly countries for the summit to introduce Lake Toba, and informed them that the potential of North Sumatra also strongly supports investors from their countries to invest here,” Governor Nuradi said. With their presence in Lake Toba, the ambassador can see the potential business in the region, so they are expected to bring more investors from their countries to invest in Lake Toba tourism. In the meantime, North Sumatra Environment Office Chief Hidayati explained that geopark-based tourism is an important point in supporting the development as well as increasing foreign tourist visits. Geopark contains historical values that can then be introduced to the wider community both within and outside the country. Hidayati explained that the tourism of Lake Toba is developed with the basis of gopark because its value is more than just a tourism. “Geopark will certainly support tourism, but tourism is not necessarily based on Geopark,” Hidayati said. Geopark has a scientific value from the process of the formation of Lake Toba Caldera where in it many things can be explained. Hence, the government is mak-
ing all-out efforts to accelerate the development of the Lake Toba area into a world tourism destination in Indonesia. Lake Toba has been designated by the government as a tourist destination of international standard in an effort to improve the living conditions of the local population. In an effort to develop the area into an international-standard tourist destination, the Lake Toba Tourism Authority Board (BPODT) requires a budget of Rp21 trillion. BPODT Finance Director Faisal has remarked that such a big amount of budget to support the development of Lake Toba to attract one million tourists in 2019 must be backed by not only the central government but also the local government and private parties. A budget of Rp21 trillion will be required from the government and private parties to develop the Lake Toba area into a world-class tourism destination, with a target to attract one million tourists in 2019, Faisal reiterated. The number of tourist visits to Lake Toba and North Sumatra had reached 197 thousand in September 2017, while the figure was recorded at 240 thousand visitors in 2016. Central banks, trade and bubbles threaten the 2018 status quo
LONDON - After a year of relatively healthy global economic growth, economists are predicting pretty much the same for 2018 -- a neither too-hot nor too-cold Goldilocks scenario, but with little sight of the three bears. The idea is that all is pretty much on track for growth that will be stronger than in 2017. Part of this may come from the fact that forecasters generally got it wrong last year, underclubbing this year’s economic performance, particularly for the euro zone and Japan. The International Monetary Fund, for example, saw 2017 global growth at 3.4 percent with advanced economies advancing 1.8 percent. It now reckons them at 3.6 percent and 2.2 percent. It had the euro zone and Japan growing 1.5 percent and 0.6 percent, respectively. It now has them at 2.1 percent and 1.5 percent. “Faster growth is reaching roughly two-thirds of the world’s population,” the IMF said in a December blog post. This performance has made some economists optimistic. Nomura is among the more bullish: “Global growth has far more self-reinforcing characteristics at present than at any time over the last 20-30 years.” But Goldilock’s bears do have a habit of showing up. There are huge numbers of potential political and economic risks to the status quo. But as in the fairy tale, let’s go with just three: central banks, trade, and bubbles. In the first case, the danger is that there will be a policy mistake, squeezing debtors. The second relates to renewed U.S. protectionism or anger
over Chinese exports triggering tit-fortat, growth-stifling trade barriers. The third is about sudden market losses that dry up spending and demand. BEAR ONE IN THE WOODS Part of 2017’s global economic success was put down to a combination of extraordinarily loose monetary policy and competent management by central banks of their attempts to wean the world off such largesse. Entering 2018 the U.S. Federal Reserve is lining up for three more hikes, the European Central Bank is slowly cutting back on its asset purchases, and China is increasing rates. All of this is being carefully flagged by the policymakers, but mistakes can happen and any significant shift of gear could cause a sharp retrenchment in consumer and corporate spending. The amount of U.S. corporate debt outstanding, for example, is nearly $8.8 trillion, according to Sifma, the U.S. securities industry group. That is up 35 percent since 2010 and a major
driver behind corporate expansion. “Financial stability risks pose a bigger threat to the continuation of the (growth) cycle than price stability risks,” Morgan Stanley co-head of economics Chetan Ahya wrote in a 2018 outlook, saying U.S. corporates were the most exposed to higher interest rates. This implies that central bank tightening to curb overly robust growth or inflation risks creating a credit squeeze -- hence the caution in Washington, Frankfurt, Beijing and Tokyo. BEAR TWO IN THE WOODS U.S. President Donald Trump’s 2016 election campaign was peppered with “America First” rhetoric and a dollop of belligerence about other countries. In office, the Trump administration has done a few things in the name of U.S. interests to upset multilateralists. It has, for example, launched an investigation into steel imports, blocked the appointment of judges at the World Trade Organization, and withdrawn the United
States from a now 11- member Pacific Rim trade pact. Other measures have not progressed as far, notably the threat to withdraw from the North American Free Trade Agreement, and the pledge to bring China to heel over its allegedly unfair trade practices. But the U.S. trade deficit increased to $43.5 billion despite growth-driven U.S. exports. The U.S.-China deficit dropped a bit but was still $34.6 billion in Beijing’s favour. “The massive TRADE deficits must go down quickly,” Trump tweeted after a trip to Asia in November. Were rhetoric to turn to practice, the economic climate of 2018 could quickly turn chilly. According to the U.S. Conference board, China’s economic exposure to the United States is nearly five times higher than the U.S. exposure to China. That would suggest that any impositions of trade barriers could hit growth in China that is behind much of the wealth in exporting nations like Germany. It is far from just a U.S.-China matter: the World Bank estimates world trade accounts for 52 percent of world GDP, more than doubling
its clout over the past 50 years ago. BEAR THREE IN THE WOODS Bubbles are hard to gauge until they have popped (there is a tendency to say “this time it is different”, until it isn’t). But if economists have learnt one thing from this century’s financial market crashes it is that they bring the house down with them. The World Bank estimates that the global growth rate fell from around 4.4 percent in 2000 to some 1.9 percent in 2001, when the dot com bubble burst, and that the financial crisis prompted a plunge from a roughly 4.3 percent growth rate in 2007 to a 1.7 percent contraction in 2009. What happens is that sudden losses in financial instruments cause companies and consumers to stop spending, leading to tumbling growth, layoffs, and debt defaults. There are plenty of examples of assets that have soared continually and steeply in the past year: Bitcoin’s staggering rise is but the most obvious. Albert Edwards, a Societe Generale strategist who is always on the lookout for bubble-poppers, reckons that with stock markets in the stratosphere, it won’t take much to reverse things. It may be just some as “boring” as some unexpectedly poor profits, he suggests. (rtr)

DENPASAR - Indonesian police have arrested an Australian, an American and a Malaysian on the holiday island of Bali for drugs offences, the latest foreigners to run afoul of some of the world’s strictest laws against narcotics. The three men, who were arrested in separate cases, appeared before the media at a briefing, dressed in orange prison garb, their faces concealed by balaclava, with armed police officers standing guard. It was not immediately clear if any of the three, who were identified only by their initials, would face the death penalty if convicted. Agung Emergency Disaster Preparedness Post in Bangli, Nengah Sukarta, said on Monday (Dec. 18) that the stock of LPG and side dishes remains available in the command post warehouse and only enough to meet the needs of refugees for the next two days. When met on Monday afternoon, Sukarta explained that logistics stock especially rice for the refugees so far remains safe. With the remaining 17 tons of stocks, it will be enough to meet the needs of 900 refugees over the next month. “With the current number of refugees, the need of rice reaches 11.4 tons per month,” he explained. DENPASAR — An explosion of gas balloon in a car showroom located on Jalan Teuku Umar area, West Denpasar, on Monday afternoon (Dec. 18), claimed six victims. The six victims had been taken to Sanglah Hospital. The six victims are Rino Iswandi, I Kadek Subadra, Saroni, Umbu, Tolib and Agung. One of them is the head of the branch office, namely Rino Iswandi.
According to the car showroom supervisor, Wahyu, the incident occurred around 14:00. Originally, the showroom officers wanted to install a gas balloon for promotion of one of their car brands. The balloon size is quite large, but it failed to fly. Whether due to technical error or not, the balloon suddenly exploded. “Probably, there was a technician’s ignorance during the installation. When raising the gas balloon, it
was watched together, including by our head of branch office,” he said. He was reluctant to give more comments. Currently, the six victims are still being handled by medical team of Sanglah Hospital. YANGON - At the end of an illustrated book written for children in Myanmar, a much-loved village teacher who has planted many trees and a beautiful garden tells his students that the time has come for him to leave them. “Oh students,” he says. “I won’t be here but you will still have the trees to give you fruit and shade and take care of you every year. So you will remember me and not be so sad.” The author of “The Gardener” was Wa Lone, one of two Reuters journalists who were arrested in Yangon last week and accused of violating the country’s colonial-era Official Secrets Act. Wa Lone, 31, and Kyaw Soe Oo, 27, had worked on Reuters coverage of a crisis that has seen some 650,000 Rohingya Muslims flee from a fierce military crackdown on militants in the western state of Rakhine. They have not been seen for a week. “The Gardener” is one of a series published by The Third Story Project, a venture co-founded by Wa Lone that produces books in Burmese, other Myanmar languages and English and distributes them free to children across the country. On the project’s website, Wa Lone says the aim was to promote tolerance and harmony in an increasingly multicultural and diverse world. “Lack of understanding has led to conflicts between different communities and finally destroyed peace and stability,” he wrote. “I love every Third Story book because they address important issues for future generations.” In Wa Lone’s story, which also carries a message of the importance of protecting the environment, the teacher scatters seeds from his bicycle on the journey to school and years later they have grown into huge trees. He also plants a garden with his students and, there, he tells them stories. He leaves them one day to help another village, where all the trees had been cut down and there was no fruit, water or shelter for the people and animals. SYDNEY - Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull on Tuesday named a new attorney general and promoted two junior lawmakers from rural Queensland state to his cabinet in a reshuffle he hopes will bolster his flagging popularity. Australian leaders often revamp cabinets before the start of a new year but for centre-right Turnbull the move is an attempt to salvage his leadership, ravaged by dismal opinion polls. Last month, Turnbull’s ruling Liberal-National coalition made its worst showing in a Queensland election in more than a decade, when it won 34 percent of the vote as Pauline Hanson’s populist One Nation clawed into its conservative base. From worm toilets to solar lamps, social innovations keep women safer in rural India
MUMBAI - Going from village to village in India to promote the use of toilets that use worms to break down fecal matter, the team from the Institute for Transformative Technologies (ITT) found young girls to be their biggest champions. The girls, who came with their mothers, quickly understood the merits of these so-called Tiger Toilets, and were eager to have them installed in their homes for privacy and safety. “We found the family is very influenced by the girl child’s opinion on these toilets, and that they are also instrumental in changing the family’s behaviour, which is key to their use and adoption,” said Nupur Kapoor, head of ITT’s India operations. “Young girls are better able to communicate how the toilets address their concerns of privacy and safety, which older women may be shy or ashamed to talk about,” she said. Hundreds of Tiger Toilets have been installed in rural homes in India. They are among several social innovations that are benefiting villagers while also empowering women and making them feel safer, even if these are not the primary goals. About 60 percent of India’s population of 1.25 billion people does not have access to adequate sanitation. This has led to open defecation, which causes tens of thousands of diarrhoeal deaths and millions of cases of chronic malnutrition every year. It also poses the risk of sexual and physical attack for women and girls when they go out in the fields to relieve themselves, particularly in villages which also lack lighting.

NEGARA - The number of vehicles and passengers entering Bali via Gilimanuk Harbor after the warning alert level of Mount Agung declined since the end of September and two months onwards. This condition is estimated to be the impact of Mount Agung eruption. However, the ASDP predicted there will be a surge of vehicles ahead of Christmas and New Year. From the data compiled in ASDP Ketapang, there was an average decrease of 6,000 passengers during October and November, exactly after the activities of Mount Agung increased. Before September, the number of passengers reached 36,369 people, 67,631 motorcycles and 99,139 cars. Meanwhile, during October and November the number of passengers was recorded to reach 30,526 people and 30,503 people. This also applied to motorcycles that dropped by 19,000 in October and 16,000 units in November. However, vehicles actually jumped to an average of 2,000 units per month. Operations Manager of ASDP Gilimanuk, Heru Wahyono, said on Sunday (Dec. 17) that there was a decrease in the number of passengers and motorcycles, but ASDP predicted there would be an increase during the upcoming Christmas and New Year holidays. “Now, it is getting normal and conducive. Many people are going to Bali,” explained Heru.
He pointed out that during October and November the number of car coming into Bali even jumped to approximately 2,000 units. In addition to the impact of airport closure, it also proves that many tourists use cars and buses to travel to Bali. ASDP predicted there will be a surge of vehicles both entering and exiting Bali by the end of this year. “Our prediction is a four percent increase for passengers, two percent for motorcycles and four percent for cars. Tourists need to be better informed about situation of Mt. Agung
DENPASAR - Foreing tourists have a different understanding of what to expect in terms of the condition of Mount Agung. The words “eruption” and “earthquake” are often understood to mean that there is necessarily a serious impact. Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika brought this to light during a meeting with the Alliance of Tourism Society (AMPB) on the Bouty Cruise ship on Sunday night (Dec 17).
The center for vulcanology refers to volcanic tremors as seismicity, however this term is translated into English as ‘earthquake’ which evokes a sense of serious natural disaster. Similarly the word ‘eruption’ is assumed to mean a discharge of magma from the crater of the volcano, while in fact the eruptions that have occurred are in fact small amounts of ash being discharged into the air. These differences in understanding have a seriously negative impact on the assumptions that potential tourists make about current conditions in Bali. Made Mangku Pastika also stressed that the warning alert level is only applicable to a radius of 8 kilometers from the top of Mount Agung. Beyind this radius it is perfectly safe. Of the 78 villages in Karangasem, only 22 villages are affected as they are located within the radius of 8-10 kilometers. So, the other 56 villages in Karangasem are still safe. The island of Bali consists of 716 villages, and only 22 of these villages are subject to the level IV warning alert. The center for volcanology (PVMBG) has stated that the warning alert only applies to the radius of 8 -10 km from the top pf Mount Agung while the rest of the island is safe. The level 4 indicates a possibility of eruption and while many imagine an eruption similar to the one in
1963 (when the mountain was at level 5), in reality this is highly unlikely as the crater of Mount Agung has widened five times larger than it was at that time. Scientifically speaking, there are eruptions occurring through the ring of fire in Indonesia which means that the power of the eruptions are divided. The governor then appealed to tourism entrepreneurs to take the current situation as an opportunity to introspect and make improvements to tourism facilities so that Bali’s tourism will be improved in the future. “This time can be used to become more resilient”, he said. Chairman of the AMPB, Gusti Kade Sutawa, added that the most important thing now is for everyone to work together to overcome this crisis – particularly the some odd 20 tourism associations in Bali. The recovery process for tourism needs to be accelerated, otherwise this crisis could have grave impacts on the tourism sector, he said. (kmb19)

Lack of volunteers at evacuation posts AMLAPURA - There are still reports of evacuation posts lacking food stocks however apparently the problem is not so much a lack of food as a lack of volunteers to manage the food stocks. The unloading and distribution of food is currently being handled by Indonesian military personnel (TNI) but as Commander of the Mt. Agung Disaster Taskforce, Benny Rahadian, admitted on Monday (Dec. 18) they cannot handle this task alone. Benny Rahadian explained that the number of volunteers, particularly for unloading and distributing foods has declined sharply since the alert level for Mount Agung was raised to level 4 again at the end of November. Currently, there are only a few volunteers form related agencies who are lending a hand to the TNI officers and sometimes there are none at all. The TNI themselves face some obstacles as they lack personnel and vehicles that would allow them to reach all the evacuations posts. “The TNI has been serving this situation for the last three months. We are worried if this problems persists as our personnel are doing the best they can but will be blamed of food stocks do not reach the evacuees”, said Commander Benny Rahadian. As commander of the taskforce, Rahadian has submitted a proposal to the leadership of the district of Bangli that local residents be recruited as volunteers. If necessary the evacuees will also be recruited for this task. It would help if they were provided with daily incentives, however there is no legal basis for enabling this. The local government has drafted a plan to address this issue and provide additional income to the volunteers while facilitating the distribution of food stocks. “The recruits can be evacuees or residents of areas near the evacuation posts. The most important thing is that they are near the food stocks that need to be delivered, he added. from refugees or residents around the post. Most importantly, they are close to the logistics,” he said. When asked about the possibility of giving aid to the evacuees in the form of cash so they could buy their own food and such, Rahadian explained that this is not effective and ends up costing a lot more. “If every family is given IDR 500,000 for example, and we multiply that by 71,000 the amount is much higher than what is currently being spent to acquire food stocks”, said Rahadian. Discussions about the possibility of providing cash directly to the evacuees came up after it became known how much was being spent on purchasing, transporting and distributing food to the evacuees, particularly given the lack of volunteers. Such discussions gathered steam when perishable foods were going bad before being used. Clearly a a suitable solution needs to be arrived at because nobody knows how long people will need to remain in evacuation. (kmb31)

CALIFORNIA - Walt Disney Co’s John Skipper resigned on Monday as president of ESPN, the company’s most important network, due to a problem with addiction.
“I have struggled for many years with a substance addiction,” Skipper, who was also Disney Media Networks cochairman, said in a statement. “I have decided that the most important thing I can do right now is to take care of my problem.” George Bodenheimer will be the sports network’s acting chairman for the next 90 days, ESPN said in a statement. He had been its president from 1998 to 2011 and executive chairman until May 2014. An ESPN spokeswoman declined to comment on who may be considered as Skipper’s successor. Skipper’s departure comes
within a few days after Disney struck a deal to buy film, television and international businesses from Rupert Murdoch’s TwentyFirst Century Fox Inc for $52.4 billion. Skipper, who became ESPN president in 2012, has led the network to a series of long-term distribution agreements with major rights holders, including the National Basketball Association and Major League Baseball. But ESPN has also struggled with subscriber losses and ratings declines. Last month, it said it would lay off about 150 employees. Disney Chief Executive Officer Bob Iger, who extended his
stay at the company through 2021 to oversee integration of Fox’s businesses, lauded Skipper’s candor and backed his decision. Disney shares were down 0.2 percent at $111.09 on Monday afternoon. (rtr)

LOS ANGELES - When director Ridley Scott decided to remove Kevin Spacey from his film “All the Money in the World” and reshoot it with Christopher Plummer, he did not just pull off an extraordinary feat. Plummer’s performance as U.S. oil billionaire J. Paul Getty also subtly changed the tone of the movie about the sensational 1973 kidnapping of Getty’s 16-year-old grandson. “There is a coolness to Kevin. That’s his style, even when he’s being emotional,” Scott said in an interview. “This man (Plummer) has enormous charm, and when you apply that charm to such, sometimes really hard, words, it makes it much more interesting,” he said. Part biography and part thriller, “All the Money in the World” dramatizes the kidnapping in Italy of John Paul Getty III and his grandfather’s refusal to pay a $17 million ransom despite being the richest man in the world.
In a rare move, Scott announced in November that he would reshoot the finished film with Plummer after allegations of sexual misconduct against Spacey, saying he feared negative publicity would damage the film’s prospects. Spacey issued an apology for the first reported incident, involving actor Anthony Rapp. He has since been accused of misconduct by more than 30 men and dropped from the next season of Netflix TV series “House of Cards.” Reuters has been unable to verify the allegations against Spacey. The Oscar-winning actor is seeking unspecified treatment, and a representative on Monday did not respond to a request for comment. The Sony Pictures, movie, now starring Plummer along with original cast members Michelle Williams and Mark Wahlberg, will be released in Europe later this week and in the United States on Dec. 25.
Plummer, 88, sought to bring humanity to Getty, although he said he “made no pretense at research” for the role ahead of a nine-day reshoot in London and Rome in mid-November. He did not see Spacey’s original scenes. “I had to follow the writing, all in a very short space of time,” Plummer said. “I saw him more vulnerable than the script suggested ... so he would have some dimension and some humanity.” Plummer, Scott and Williams were nominated last week for Golden Globe awards. Scott said he was initially drawn to the project not so much because of the kidnapping by the ‘Ndrangheta, the Calabrian mafia, who cut off their victim’s ear, but because of the elder Getty. “He’s an enigmatic character who isolated himself through wealth. When somebody becomes that wealthy, all the friends start evaporating, so he was an isolated individual,” the British director said. Getty died in 1976. (rtr)

SEOUL - The lead singer of top South Korean boy band SHINee died in hospital on Monday in a possible suicide that robs fans of the globally-famous K-Pop genre of one of its biggest stars. Kim Jong-hyun, 27, was found unconscious next to burning briquettes on a frying pan inside a serviced residence in the South Korean capital Seoul, a police official told Reuters. “His sister was first to call the police assuming that he might commit suicide,” said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive subject. Yonhap news agency said the singer sent a final message to his sister asking her to “let me go.” Kim spent nearly a decade in his leading role as one of five members of SHINee, one of the
most popular boy bands in the country, as well as a solo artist. His death is a blow to the massive worldwide fan base that Korea’s “K-pop” music has attracted in recent years. Thousands of Korean children dream of becoming household names like rapper Psy, whose 2012 “Gangnam Style” video was a global YouTube hit, often putting
up with punishing schedules in the hope of one day making it big in the music industry.
