Review: ‘The Joneses’ is another studio comedy misfire

The modern studio comedy increasingly feels limp, suffocated by the financial imperatives of high-concept plots and desperately in search of signs of life. Greg Mottola’s “Keeping Up With the Joneses” is, like many before it, fine enough. But it mostly goes down as another collection of funny people stuck in too narrowly clichéd roles in an overly familiar story. It’s now been more than 10 years since “The 40 Year-Old Virgin” and five since “Bridesmaids.” (Feel old yet?) There have, undoubtedly, been good comedies since, namely things with Melissa McCarthy in them, Noah Baumbach’s “Frances Ha” and anything Wes Anderson is putting out. But there has been perhaps no greater casualty to the constrictions of blockbuster-centric Hollywood than comedy. The freedom necessary for comedy to thrive is mostly found on television; the action is with “Broad City,” ‘’Atlanta,” ‘’Inside Amy Schumer” and others. Mottola, the director of “Adventureland” and “Superbad,” has been at the center of comedy on both the big screen and on TV (“Arrested Development,” the underrated “Clear History”), but “Keeping Up With the Joneses,” written by Michael LeSieur (“You, Me and Dupree”) doesn’t have much of the naturalism that has distinguished his best. Zach Galifianakis and Isla Fisher play Jeff and Karen Gaffney, a regular suburbanite couple experiencing an empty nest for the first time with their kids away at summer camp. An impossibly stylish and accomplished couple moves in next door, the Joneses (Jon Hamm and Gal Gadot, taking a break from her Wonder Woman duties). He’s a travel writer who can blow his own glass; she writes a cooking blog and wears cocktail dresses to neighborhood barbeques. But what makes the Joneses most jealous of them is their easy affection with one another. Though its name is taken from the status-obsessed phrase first made famous by a 1913 comic strip and coopted by the Kardashians, this “Keeping Up With the Joneses” is a comedy about marital passion rekindled. That the Joneses are putting up a facade is evident from the start, but the movie cleverly subverts the nature of their secret identities. They are elite government spies of some sort, but not as far removed from

Young generation well directed YOUNG generation of Bali is easily influenced to join in mass organization. It makes a number of customary villages in Bali worried about the fate of young generation in the future. Culik village, Abang, Karangasem, has a special way to counter this threat. The local village fortifies their youth by making decision in the perarem or customary bylaw strictly prohibiting any kind of anarchistic organizations from entering the village. This village is one of the mainstays having tourism potential in Karangasem. One of the most widely known is Amed attraction. Amed being famous for its diving attraction is part of the 12 customary hamlets namely the Tegallinggah, Kahang-Kahang, Kebon, Buayang, Pekandelan, Amertasari, Gria, Seloni, Babakan, Amed, Lebah and Mekarsari. In the meantime, administratively, Culik village has four administrative villages namely the Kerta Mandala, Culik, Purwakerti and Labasari.

the normal squabbles and challenges of marriage as you might think. The collision of international espionage thrills and quiet suburban life has become familiar by now thanks to the likes of “The Matador,” ‘’Mr. and Mrs. Smith” and “The Americans.” When the bullets start flying, “Keeping Up With the Jones” has some moves of its own, thanks to the talents of Galifianakis (here playing a naive, aw-shucks character that limits him) and the always game Fisher. Only Hamm manages to create a three-dimensional character: a James Bond secretly yearning to be a regular guy. But whatever is cramping the style of “Keeping Up With Joneses” — whether it’s the PG-13 rating, the stock characters or a thin script — the feeling never leaves that everyone here could do better if they were really let loose. Alas, it’s going to take more than Wonder Woman to save the studio comedy. “Keeping Up With the Joneses,” a 20th Century Fox release, is rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for “sexual content, action/ violence and brief strong language.” Running time: 101 minutes. Trump? Clinton? Many young Americans prefer giant meteor

BOSTON - Young Americans are so dissatisfied with their choices in this presidential election that nearly one in four told an opinion poll they would rather have a giant meteor destroy the Earth than see Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton in the White House. The tongue-in-cheek question was intended to gauge young Americans’ level of unhappiness about their choices in the Nov. 8 election, said Joshua Dyck, codirector of UMass Lowell’s Center for Public Opinion, which conducted the poll alongside Odyssey, a social media platform.

The choice alluded to the Twitter hashtag “#GiantMeteor2016,” a reference to an imaginary presidential candidate used to express frustration about this year’s election choices. Some 53 percent of the 1,247 people aged 18 to 35 said they would prefer to see a meteor destroy

four, preferred the giant meteor outcome to either Trump or Clinton. “Obviously we don’t think that they’re serious,” Dyck said in a phone interview on Tuesday. “The fact that one in four of our young people pick ‘Giant Meteor’ tells you something about the political disaffection that is being shown by American youth.” That contrasts with the surge of participation by young voters that helped propel Obama into the White House for his first term in the 2008 election.

Chief of Culik customary village, Ketut Pasek, said on Monday (Oct. 17) that the perarem has set forth that anarchistic mass organizations are not allowed to enter Culik. “Any billboards related to such mass organization found at Culik customary village will be directly dismantled. The village should be free from any mass organizations,” he said. Based on the perarem, Culik customary village strictly prohibits its villagers from joining a certain mass organization. Local youths are only allowed to join the customary village youth club or the STT. “This kind of prohibition is first implemented at Culik customary village. We’ve been applying this

since 2015. So far, the results of this perarem have quite positive impact,” he said. With this pararem, the development of Culik young generation becomes more focused. Any residents being indifferent to this perarem will be imposed with strict enough sanction set forth by Culik customary village. Residents will be immediately summoned and invited to village meeting. The sanction will be directly imposed on the spot according to agreement having been made. “Just by being summoned, this social sanction has been considered quite severe, let alone being invited to perarem meeting of customary village,” he said. At the beginning of implementing the pararem is admitted to be quite heavy. However, after passing for almost a year, the local support is quite large. Thus, the threat of anarchistic mass organizations undermining the mindset of local young generation can be prevented. Irrigation channel at Jatiluwih potential to generate electricity TABANAN - In fact, the irrigation channel is not only functioned to drain water to paddy fields. However, with the application of appropriate technology, this irrigation channel can generate electricity. This potential is found at Jatiluwih. To that end, the government of Tabanan makes collaboration with Taiwa Seiki Corporation of Japan to undertake construction of micro hydro electric energy at Jatiluwih.

Erectile dysfunction may improve with exercise

PORTO - Men who have difficulty maintaining erections may benefit from exercise or physical activity, according to a new analysis. A growing body of evidence has suggested physical activity could improve erectile function, but the authors of the new report say that until now, no one had looked at all the studies together. The topic is important, they told Reuters Health by email, because the prevalence of erectile dysfunction ranges from 8 percent among men in their 20s and 30s, up to 37 percent among men in their early 70s. “This sexual disorder can significantly deteriorate quality of life and is often neglected in clinical practice,” said the researchers, who were led by Dr. Andre Silva of the University of Porto in Portugal. For the new study, the researchers searched for randomized controlled trials testing exercise and physical activity as a therapy for erectile dysfunction. They found seven studies published between 2004 and 2013 that included a total of 505 men, who were tracked for anywhere from eight weeks to two years. Average ages ranged from 43 to 69 years. Altogether, 292 men were ran-

domly assigned to complete aerobic exercises, pelvic floor muscle exercises or a combination of exercises. The other 213 men were not told to exercise. Erectile function was measured using the International Index of Erectile Function. Scores range from 5 to 25; men with no erectile dysfunction have scores of 22 to 25, and those with the most severe dysfunction score between 5 and 7. Overall, men who exercised had their scores increase by an average of 3.85 points, compared to men who did not exercise. Exercises specific to pelvic floor muscles didn’t seem to yield a benefit. Among men with an increased cardiovascular risk, coronary heart disease or prostate removal, however, any type of exercise led to improved erectile function scores. A take-home message from this analysis is that exercise should have a role in the treatment of erectile dysfunction, said Dr. Landon Trost, who is head of andrology and male infertility at the Mayo Clinic

Abrasion at Yehembang increasingly widespread Two stalls damaged

NEGARA - The impact of abrasion on Yehembang Beach, Mendoyo, is increasingly widespread. Moreover, the onslaught of waves hoofing the coast near the Yehembang cemetery on Monday night (Oct. 17) caused two semi-permanent stalls to be destroyed. In addition, a number of skulls and bones previously buried in the ground near the beach appeared and scattered among the ruins of revetment. A number of residents met on Tuesday (Oct. 18) admitted that the height of sea waves on Monday night reached five meters.

The seawater even hoofed two semi-permanent building of stalls near Yehembang cemetery. Stall owners realized the gigantic waves,

so that they immediately evacuated the entire merchandise before the waves came to batter. Right now, one of the stall owners, Ketut Naya, can only surrender and watch his stall building only leaving timbers and roof tiles. He claimed to suffer losses reaching millions as a result of the accident. The abrasion also undermined the connecting roads of Pasar hamlet to parking lot of Rambutsiwi Temple. Moreover, the space left

at shoreline and the rural road is less than one meter. If this condition is neglected and without immediate handling, it is concerned the road will be broken. Residents also rediscovered human bones around the coast. A number of Mendoyo subdistrict police members already came down to check the location of the discovery of the human bones. ZURICH - Swiss drugmaker Roche Holding AG’s new immunotherapy, Tecentriq, won approval on Tuesday from U.S. health regulators as a second-line lung cancer treatment, a decision seen likely to erode Bristol-Myers Squibb’s position in this hotly contested market. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Tecentriq to be used in non-small cell lung cancer patients previously treated with chemotherapy, regardless of whether their tumors express a protein called PD-L1. People with high PD-L1 levels are generally more receptive to immunotherapy. In study results released this month, patients getting Tecentriq lived on average 4.2 months longer than those taking chemotherapy. Tecentriq is aiming for a share of the treatment market now dominated by Bristol’s Opdivo, a drug which doctors can also prescribe for patients regardless of their levels of

immune-system suppressing PDL1 expression. In the first half, Opdivo sales hit $1.58 billion, about three times that of Merck & Co’s drug, Keytruda, that is prescribed only for people who express a certain level of PD-L1. Analysts estimate Tecentriq’s annual sales across all cancers - it is already approved for bladder cancer and will seek approval for more indications - will reach $4 billion in 2021, according to consensus figures compiled by Thomson Reuters. Tecentriq, Opdivo and Keytruda are the initial entrants in a highly promising class of immunotherapy drugs now transforming cancer treatment and are jockeying for pole position, either for use alone or in combination with other drugs. To address this season change, farmers have anticipated by fertilization and treatment of plants. For this case, farmers are willing to spend higher costs than ever before. The Jembrana farmers’ sport known as makepung (buffalo race) is an interesting and unique attraction, that not only brings joy to the farmers but also entertains people from all over Bali an well as people from all over the world, as evidenced by the increasing number of people who show up to watch each buffalo race. Makepung are now held 3 or 4 times a year. Makepung has been dubbed as the ‘traditional grand prix’. The Balinese word makepung means ‘romping buffalo’ and has been closely associated to Jembrana for a long time. The sport originated in the common ploughing of the paddy fields after harvest, but then developed in a race involving the farmers becoming jockeys on their buffalo drawn ploughs. The Jembrana Regent Cup buffalo race that took place at the Satya Jayanti Circuit, on Sunday (Aug. 14) was especially interesting as the typical Jembrana racetrack was all muddy from the heavy rain that fell the day before

the race. The mud made it especially challenging for the jockeys to direct their buffalo. The muddy conditions did stop thousands of buffalo race the lovers to throng the racetrack from early morning. IS car bombs, mortars slow down Iraqi advance on Mosul

KHAZER— Islamic State militants have deployed suicide car bombs and fired mortar rounds to slow down the advance of Iraqi troops outside a key town near the militant-held city of Mosul, an Iraqi army officer said Wednesday. The officer from the 9th Division told The Associated Press that his troops were now around 1 kilometer (half mile) away from Hamdaniyah, a historically Christian town also known as Bakhdida. Since Tuesday, IS has sent 12 car bombs, all of which were blown up before reaching their targets, he said, adding that Iraqi troops suffered a small number of casualties from the mortar rounds. The officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to reporters, did not provide specific figures. Iraq launched a massive operation on Monday to retake Mosul, the country’s second largest city and the extremist group’s biggest urban bastion.

The operation is the largest launched by the Iraqi army since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion. Some 25,000 troops, including Sunni tribal fighters, Kurdish forces known as the peshmerga and statesanctioned Shiite militias known as the Popular Mobilization Units are approaching the city from different directions. The participation of the Shiite militias in the operation to retake the mainly Sunni Mosul has raised concerns that the campaign could inflame sectarian tensions. Rights groups have accused the Shiite militias of abuses in past campaigns against IS-held areas. In a bid to alleviate those concerns, Shiite militia leaders on Tuesday announced that they will only focus on capturing the mostly

KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia suspended a child team-building programme on Wednesday after a video emerged online of a group of frightened schoolgirls being made to wade through a muddy snake pit. The programme, held in the western state of Perak, was part of a motivational camp for children aged between 10 and 12 and was conducted by a school and the Malaysian Civil Defence Department. The three-minute video, which drew outrage on social media, showed the schoolgirls screaming and crying after they were asked to cross a muddy pool which they were told contained two pythons. As they were crossing the pool, more snakes were thrown in. The

students were also sprayed with water and told to “get in and dive” by male instructors, who were not seen on-screen. Perak civil defence department director Col. Mohd Noor Hassan Ashaari Sulaiman told state news agency Bernama the camp’s coordinators had modelled the exercise on training videos found on Youtube. The use of snakes was not endorsed by the department and was not part of its self-development module, he said, adding that the snakes used were non-poisonous. “This incident cannot be taken lightly,” he was quoted as saying. NEW DELHI — New Delhi’s zoo has been closed temporarily after nine birds died from suspected bird flu last week, a zoo official said Wednesday. Autopsies conducted on the birds confirmed that at least two of them died from H5N1 avian influenza, said Riaz Ahmed Khan, the National Zoological Park’s curator. “We decided to close the zoo for a few days as a precautionary measure,” Khan said, adding that the zoo would reopen next week. He said the birds, including some ducks and two pelicans, died Friday

and Saturday. The zoo, one of the largest in India, has about 1,400 animals, reptiles and birds belonging to around 130 species. It gets about 2.2 million visitors annually. The H5N1 avian influenza virus poses no apparent threat to humans, but highly pathogenic strains can be deadly to domestic poultry and, rarely, wild birds. JAKARTA - A consortium building a longawaited mass rapid transit (MRT) railway in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta has replaced two top officials, a representative said on Wednesday, amid doubts the $3-billion dollar project can be completed on time. A consortium of Indonesian and Japanese firms, including Obayashi Corp, Shimizu Corp and Sumitomo Mitsui Construction Co Ltd, is building the MRT in the city of 10 million people, which is among the world’s most traffic-logged. “The chief executive and operational director have been changed,” said Tubagus Hikmatullah, the corporate secretary of PT MRT, but he declined to elaborate on the reason. The city governor’s office did not respond to a request for comment. Media reported that the changes followed an announcement by the old management of a delay until 2019 in the opening of the project’s first, $1.7-billion phase, and complaints over land acquisition. Bell set bail at $5,000 each for Chazerae Taylor, 38, and his son, D’Markeo Taylor, 19, on wanton endangerment charges. Dvonta Middlebrooks, 21, is charged with wanton endangerment and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. His bail was set at $12,500. Bell will assign attorneys for two of them. The younger Taylor already has a lawyer. Lexington police say Middlebrooks was in the parking lot of the Cook Out restaurant and fired multiple shots in the incident in which Trinity Gay was killed early Sunday. Court records show the Taylors admitted also firing shots. Police spokeswoman Brenna Angel said police don’t believe Trinity Gay was in either of the vehicles involved. Tyson Gay said he and his

Bell set bail at $5,000 each for Chazerae Taylor, 38, and his son, D’Markeo Taylor, 19, on wanton endangerment charges. Dvonta Middlebrooks, 21, is charged with wanton endangerment and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. His bail was set at $12,500. Bell will assign attorneys for two of them. IS car bombs, mortars slow down Iraqi advance on Mosul

KHAZER— Islamic State militants have deployed suicide car bombs and fired mortar rounds to slow down the advance of Iraqi troops outside a key town near the militant-held city of Mosul, an Iraqi army officer said Wednesday. The officer from the 9th Division told The Associated Press that his troops were now around 1 kilometer (half mile) away from Hamdaniyah, a historically Christian town also known as Bakhdida. Since Tuesday, IS has sent 12 car bombs, all of which were blown up before reaching their targets, he said, adding that Iraqi troops suffered a small number of casualties from the mortar rounds. The officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to reporters, did not provide specific figures. Iraq launched a massive operation on Monday to retake Mosul, the country’s second largest city and the extremist group’s biggest urban bastion.

The operation is the largest launched by the Iraqi army since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion. Some 25,000 troops, including Sunni tribal fighters, Kurdish forces known as the peshmerga and statesanctioned Shiite militias known as the Popular Mobilization Units are approaching the city from different directions. The participation of the Shiite militias in the operation to retake the mainly Sunni Mosul has raised concerns that the campaign could inflame sectarian tensions. Rights groups have accused the Shiite militias of abuses in past campaigns against IS-held areas. In a bid to alleviate those concerns, Shiite militia leaders on Tuesday announced that they will only focus on capturing the mostly

Shiite town of Tal Afar to the west of Mosul, and not enter the city itself. “The only troops who will enter Mosul are the army and police, not the Popular Mobilization Units or the peshmerga,” said Hadi al-Amiri, the leader of the Badr Brigade, one of the largest Shiite militias. “This has been agreed upon,” he said at a press conference in the Shiite holy city of Najaf. Amnesty International said in a report released Tuesday that Iraqi government and paramilitary forces detained, tortured or killed hundreds of Sunni Arab civilians fleeing IS-held areas during the operation to retake the Sunni city of Fallujah, west of Baghdad, earlier this year. KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia suspended a child team-building programme on Wednesday after a video emerged online of a group of frightened schoolgirls being made to wade through a muddy snake pit. The programme, held in the western state of Perak, was part of a motivational camp for children aged between 10 and 12 and was conducted by a school and the Malaysian Civil Defence Department. The three-minute video, which drew outrage on social media, showed the schoolgirls screaming and crying after they were asked to cross a muddy pool which they were told contained two pythons. As they were crossing the pool, more snakes were thrown in. The

students were also sprayed with water and told to “get in and dive” by male instructors, who were not seen on-screen. Perak civil defence department director Col. Mohd Noor Hassan Ashaari Sulaiman told state news agency Bernama the camp’s coordinators had modelled the exercise on training videos found on Youtube. The use of snakes was not endorsed by the department and was not part of its self-development module, he said, adding that the snakes used were non-poisonous. “This incident cannot be taken lightly,” he was quoted as saying. NEW DELHI — New Delhi’s zoo has been closed temporarily after nine birds died from suspected bird flu last week, a zoo official said Wednesday. Autopsies conducted on the birds confirmed that at least two of them died from H5N1 avian influenza, said Riaz Ahmed Khan, the National Zoological Park’s curator. “We decided to close the zoo for a few days as a precautionary measure,” Khan said, adding that the zoo would reopen next week. He said the birds, including some ducks and two pelicans, died Friday

and Saturday. The zoo, one of the largest in India, has about 1,400 animals, reptiles and birds belonging to around 130 species. It gets about 2.2 million visitors annually. The H5N1 avian influenza virus poses no apparent threat to humans, but highly pathogenic strains can be deadly to domestic poultry and, rarely, wild birds. In May, zoo workers were vaccinated against rabies after 46 spotted deer at the park died from the virus. (ap)

JAKARTA - A consortium building a longawaited mass rapid transit (MRT) railway in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta has replaced two top officials, a representative said on Wednesday, amid doubts the $3-billion dollar project can be completed on time. A consortium of Indonesian and Japanese firms, including Obayashi Corp, Shimizu Corp and Sumitomo Mitsui Construction Co Ltd, is building the MRT in the city of 10 million people, which is among the world’s most traffic-logged. “The chief executive and operational director have been changed,” said Tubagus Hikmatullah, the corporate secretary of PT MRT, but he declined to elaborate on the reason. The city governor’s office did not respond to a request for comment. Media reported that the changes followed an announcement by the old management of a delay until 2019 in the opening of the project’s first, $1.7-billion phase, and complaints over land acquisition. Delayed repeatedly for more than 20 years, the project was finally launched in 2013, with the first line originally scheduled to have been opened in 2018. (rtr)

JAKARTA - The Jakarta police on Tuesday organized a seminar on security and law enforcement during the 2017 regional elections. “The seminar is aimed at distinguishing between administrative violations, disputes among participants and criminal acts during the elections,” deputy Jakarta police chief Brig. Gen. Suntana said. The Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu), police department and Jakarta prosecutors office should carry out their duties comprehensively to avoid security disruptions, he said. Makepung are now held 3 or 4 times a year. Makepung has been dubbed as the ‘traditional grand prix’. The Balinese word makepung means ‘romping buffalo’ and has been closely associated to Jembrana for a long time. The sport originated in the common ploughing of the paddy fields after harvest, but then developed in a race involving the farmers becoming jockeys on their buffalo drawn ploughs. The Jembrana Regent Cup buffalo race that took place at the Satya Jayanti Circuit, on Sunday (Aug. 14) was especially interesting as the typical Jembrana racetrack was all muddy from the heavy rain that fell the day before

the race. The mud made it especially challenging for the jockeys to direct their buffalo. The muddy conditions did stop thousands of buffalo race the lovers to throng the racetrack from early morning. PDAM difficult to open new network

GIANYAR - Municipality Waterworks (PDAM) Gianyar has generated revenue of IDR 3 billion annually. Although the revenue is quite large, a total of 55,640 subscribers in Gianyar are still unable to get excellent services. This condition occurred due to a number of constraints faced by the PDAM Gianyar. This condition was recognized by Managing Director of PDAM Gianyar, Made Sastra Kencana, Monday (Oct. 17). Sastra Kencana explained the revenue earned by the PDAM Gianyar each year is indeed quite large, reaching IDR 3 billion. Nevertheless, it is still unable to provide maximal services. One of the causes is the difficulty to open new network. “This new network should be built by cutting a bit of road body, but it is very difficult for us to do. Moreover, there is no coordination with the Public Works in the district, provincial or central government,” he said. The management has long been trying to build coordination with the Public Works, and this coordination has even been communicated to central government. But so far, there is no response. “This MoU submission has long been

conveyed, not only to the province but also to central government. So far, there is no response,” he said. Due to this condition, the pipelines installed in the 1980s have not been replaced until these days. Due to overdue usage, many leaks cannot be resolved. “On average the pipeline network is old-fashioned, installed around the 1980s and 1990s, so that many leaks currently occur. We have tried to address the leaks with a variety of efforts,” he explained. He added that the company could only install pipelines on drainage channel. The decline in coffee production was admitted by a coffee farmer of Pupuan, Ketut Suardika. On Monday (Oct. 17), this year’s harvest has decreased drastically when compared to last year’s, reaching 60 percent. In last year’s harvest season, the average coffee production of farmers reached 600 -700 kg per hectare, but this year only reaches 300-400 kg per hectare. The decline in coffee production, according to Suardika, occurs due to the impact of extreme weather characterized by high level of rainfall and high temperature. “This year the season change and rainy season seem to last longer than last year,” he said. season coffee plants require sufficient heat condition as well as adequate rainfall in rainy season. “This year, heat and rain come beyond the season. As a result, coffee flowers that should thrive in dry season face imperfect process because the current dry season is interspersed with rain,” explained Suardika. To address this season change, farmers have anticipated by fertilization and treatment of plants. For this case, farmers are willing to spend higher costs than ever before. However, these measures still do not much help increase their coffee production. Farmers also experience a decline in the revenue. Though going through decline in production, it does not necessarily mean if the price of coffee is expensive. It is unclear what will happen to the freed Chibok girls in the long-term. Erectile dysfunction may improve with exercise

PORTO - Men who have difficulty maintaining erections may benefit from exercise or physical activity, according to a new analysis. A growing body of evidence has suggested physical activity could improve erectile function, but the authors of the new report say that until now, no one had looked at all the studies together. The topic is important, they told Reuters Health by email, because the prevalence of erectile dysfunction ranges from 8 percent among men in their 20s and 30s, up to 37 percent among men in their early 70s. “This sexual disorder can significantly deteriorate quality of life and is often neglected in clinical practice,” said the researchers, who were led by Dr. Andre Silva of the University of Porto in Portugal. For the new study, the researchers searched for randomized controlled trials testing exercise and physical activity as a therapy for erectile dysfunction. They found seven studies published between 2004 and 2013 that included a total of 505 men, who were tracked for anywhere from eight weeks to two years. Average ages ranged from 43 to 69 years. Altogether, 292 men were ran-

domly assigned to complete aerobic exercises, pelvic floor muscle exercises or a combination of exercises. The other 213 men were not told to exercise. Erectile function was measured using the International Index of Erectile Function. Scores range from 5 to 25; men with no erectile dysfunction have scores of 22 to 25, and those with the most severe dysfunction score between 5 and 7. Overall, men who exercised had their scores increase by an average of 3.85 points, compared to men who did not exercise. Exercises specific to pelvic floor muscles didn’t seem to yield a benefit. Among men with an increased cardiovascular risk, coronary heart disease or prostate removal, however, any type of exercise led to improved erectile function scores. A take-home message from this analysis is that exercise should have a role in the treatment of erectile dysfunction, said Dr. Landon Trost, who is head of andrology and male infertility at the Mayo Clinic

Abrasion at Yehembang increasingly widespread Two stalls damaged

NEGARA - The impact of abrasion on Yehembang Beach, Mendoyo, is increasingly widespread. ZURICH - Swiss drugmaker Roche Holding AG’s new immunotherapy, Tecentriq, won approval on Tuesday from U.S. health regulators as a second-line lung cancer treatment, a decision seen likely to erode Bristol-Myers Squibb’s position in this hotly contested market. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Tecentriq to be used in non-small cell lung cancer patients previously treated with chemotherapy, regardless of whether their tumors express a protein called PD-L1. People with high PD-L1 levels are generally more receptive to immunotherapy. In study results released this month, patients getting Tecentriq lived on average 4.2 months longer than those taking chemotherapy. Tecentriq is aiming for a share of the treatment market now dominated by Bristol’s Opdivo, a drug which doctors can also prescribe for patients regardless of their levels of

immune-system suppressing PDL1 expression. In the first half, Opdivo sales hit $1.58 billion, about three times that of Merck & Co’s drug, Keytruda, that is prescribed only for people who express a certain level of PD-L1. Review: ‘The Joneses’ is another studio comedy misfire

The modern studio comedy increasingly feels limp, suffocated by the financial imperatives of high-concept plots and desperately in search of signs of life. Greg Mottola’s “Keeping Up With the Joneses” is, like many before it, fine enough. But it mostly goes down as another collection of funny people stuck in too narrowly clichéd roles in an overly familiar story. It’s now been more than 10 years since “The 40 Year-Old Virgin” and five since “Bridesmaids.” (Feel old yet?) There have, undoubtedly, been good comedies since, namely things with Melissa McCarthy in them, Noah Baumbach’s “Frances Ha” and anything Wes Anderson is putting out. But there has been perhaps no greater casualty to the constrictions of blockbuster-centric Hollywood than comedy. The freedom necessary for comedy to thrive is mostly found on television; the action is with “Broad City,” ‘’Atlanta,” ‘’Inside Amy Schumer” and others. Mottola, the director of “Adventureland” and “Superbad,” has been at the center of comedy on both the big screen and on TV (“Arrested Development,” the underrated “Clear History”), but “Keeping Up With the Joneses,” written by Michael LeSieur (“You, Me and Dupree”) doesn’t have much of the naturalism that has distinguished his best. Zach Galifianakis and Isla Fisher play Jeff and Karen Gaffney, a regular suburbanite couple experiencing an empty nest for the first time with their kids away at summer camp. An impossibly stylish and accomplished couple moves in next door, the Joneses (Jon Hamm and Gal Gadot, taking a break from her Wonder Woman duties). He’s a travel writer who can blow his own glass; she writes a cooking blog and wears cocktail dresses to neighborhood barbeques. But what makes the Joneses most jealous of them is their easy affection with one another. Though its name is taken from the status-obsessed phrase first made famous by a 1913 comic strip and coopted by the Kardashians, this “Keeping Up With the Joneses” is a comedy about marital passion rekindled. That the Joneses are putting up a facade is evident from the start, but the movie cleverly subverts the nature of their secret identities. They are elite government spies of some sort, but not as far removed from

the normal squabbles and challenges of marriage as you might think. The collision of international espionage thrills and quiet suburban life has become familiar by now thanks to the likes of “The Matador,” ‘’Mr. and Mrs. Smith” and “The Americans.” When the bullets start flying, “Keeping Up With the Jones” has some moves of its own, thanks to the talents of Galifianakis (here playing a naive, aw-shucks character that limits him) and the always game Fisher. Only Hamm manages to create a three-dimensional character: a James Bond secretly yearning to be a regular guy. But whatever is cramping the style of “Keeping Up With Joneses” — whether it’s the PG-13 rating, the stock characters or a thin script — the feeling never leaves that everyone here could do better if they were really let loose. Alas, it’s going to take more than Wonder Woman to save the studio comedy. “Keeping Up With the Joneses,” a 20th Century Fox release, is rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for “sexual content, action/ violence and brief strong language.” Running time: 101 minutes. Two stars out of four.(ap)

Trump? Clinton? Many young Americans prefer giant meteor

BOSTON - Young Americans are so dissatisfied with their choices in this presidential election that nearly one in four told an opinion poll they would rather have a giant meteor destroy the Earth than see Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton in the White House. The tongue-in-cheek question was intended to gauge young Americans’ level of unhappiness about their choices in the Nov. 8 election, said Joshua Dyck, codirector of UMass Lowell’s Center for Public Opinion, which conducted the poll alongside Odyssey, a social media platform.

The choice alluded to the Twitter hashtag “#GiantMeteor2016,” a reference to an imaginary presidential candidate used to express frustration about this year’s election choices. Some 53 percent of the 1,247 people aged 18 to 35 said they would prefer to see a meteor destroy

the world than have Republican New York real estate developer Trump in the Oval Office, with some 34 percent preferring planetary annihilation to seeing the Democratic former Secretary of State win. Some 39 percent said they would prefer that U.S. President Barack Obama declare himself president for life than hand over power to Clinton or Trump, with 26 percent saying the nation would do better to select its next leader in a random lottery. Some 23 percent, nearly one in

four, preferred the giant meteor outcome to either Trump or Clinton. “Obviously we don’t think that they’re serious,” Dyck said in a phone interview on Tuesday. “The fact that one in four of our young people pick ‘Giant Meteor’ tells you something about the political disaffection that is being shown by American youth.” That contrasts with the surge of participation by young voters that helped propel Obama into the White House for his first term in the 2008 election.
