LOS ANGELES — Neil Patrick Harris, host of the Emmy awards for excellence in the TV industry, isn’t planning to leave the stage during Sunday’s ceremony unless he’s really, really gotta go. “I’ll be staying on stage the whole show — with a few exceptions,” the second-time Emmy host teased after ceremoniously unraveling the red carpet Wednesday morning. “I thought about having a colostomy bag, but I thought that would not be good for the first few rows. It would be like a Gallagher show if things go wrong, so I may have to excuse myself for a minute or three a couple of times during the show.” Harris, whose “How I Met Your

Green belt diminishes, land conversion proliferates Tabanan (Bali Post)—

Reduction of green belt proposed by Tabanan government through the draft of the Regional Bylaw (Ranperda) is ascertained to result in side effects. Moreover, the Director General of Water Resources of the Ministry of Public Works is also concentrating on conducting conservation,” he said. As reported, the water of Lake Tamblingan at Munduk village, Banjar subdistrict, receded again. The verge of the lake formerly filled with water lately began to face a drought. Some residents said the water of Lake Tamblingan had receded since last June. Allegedly, it happened because it rarely rained so that the water discharge from the springs at the edge of the lake decreased. When measured, the decreasing water might reach approximately 50 meters. Such condition had an impact on the agricultural land of residents on the edge of the lake. Most flowers looked to have wilted as lacking of water. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

He hoped local authorities to ask central government, especially the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, to revise the KSPN of Besakih Temple and replaced it with other areas, such as Tanah Lot or Soka. “This includes in the determination of Bali tourism area which could be included in the KSPN program because this should refer to the

regional spatial planning of Bali tourism area,” he said. He argued that inclusion of sacred area in tourism development was considered inappropriate. Moreover, Besakih Temple was the biggest temple so far sanctified by the Hindus on the Island of the Gods, not for tourism development. “Probably, an error has occurred in the determination because the research was not carried out by local people. To that end, I hope the government through the Bali Government Tourism Office could propose Besakih to be replaced with Tanah Lot or Soka,” he said. DENPASAR - The Ministry of Agriculture will be organising an exposition, displaying Indonesian agricultural products, from October 1 to 9, 2013, during which the APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) Summit will also be held. The exhibition will be held in Jimbaran, while the APEC Summit will be held in Nusa Dua, said Head of the Bali Agricultural Office Ida Bagus Wisnuardana on Thursday. On the sidelines of the meetings, delegations of the APEC Summit will be invited to view the exposition, which will display potential agricultural products from various regions in Indonesia. The discussion on agricultural packages is expected to bring about changes in WTO regulations on public stockholding to raise the limits on subsidised food stockpiles. From such area of paddy fields, hundreds of hectares face drought when dry season arrives. However, the Head of Karangasem Agriculture and Horticulture Agency, Komang Subrata Yasa, said in Karangasem on Wednesday (Sep 18) that his party had not received any reports regarding the dry paddy field. Unlike in 2007, many reports were received on the drought. It happened because it had just rained once, while farmers in the areas like at Seraya in Abang or in Kubu subdistrict had directly planted corn. However, after the corn grew up, it even never rained. At this time, there were no reports on the drought. When paddy field dried out, farmers had anticipated it by planting no rice. However, they planted corn or beans and other horticulture, or did not cultivate their paddy field at all so as not to lose during the drought. Typically, said Subratayasa, when it rained once in November-December, farmers instantly grew crops. When drought and crop failure occurred, there were always reports through headmen. “Lately, the growing season and rainy season are difficult to predict because of uncertainty,” he said. Subratayasa admitted that due to small and declining water discharge during dry season, the paddy fields like at Bias Lantang, Purwakerti village or the spread of paddy field at Nongan, routinely dried out. The Interior Ministry, which is in charge of police, said Gen. Nabil Farrag, an aide to the security chief of Cairo’s twin city of Giza, was shot dead when militants opened fire on security forces approaching the town of Kerdasa to drive off suspected Islamic militants. Egypt’s official news agency blamed “terrorists and criminal elements” for his death. Police arrested 32 suspects in house-to-house raids in Kerdasa, according to a security official speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief reporters. The interior ministry said Farrag was killed by gunmen firing from the rooftops of several schools and mosques they had taken over. Thursday’s assault on Kerdasa is the second major operation by the army and police against a militant stronghold. On Sunday, a large police and army contingent retook the town of Dalga south of Cairo, ending two months of Islamists’ rule there. The quick succession of the two major raids underline the resolve of the military-backed government to restore law and order throughout a country roiled by unrest and violence since the 2011 ouster of longtime autocrat Hosni Mubarak.

Wary Fed leaves US stimulus unchanged

WASHINGTON - The Federal Reserve left its $85 billion a month stimulus program in place, surprising economists and delighting surging global markets Thursday, which had anticipated a reduction that would confirm a strengthening US economy. Fed policy makers instead cut their growth forecast on Wednesday for this year and next, and said they wanted to further gauge the economic impact of government spending cuts and a spike in interest rates in the past four months. The dollar dropped to its lowest level against the euro since February, hitting $1.3511 per one euro from $1.3340 before the announcement. The dollar fell to 98.13 yen from 99.33 yen. Stocks and currencies in Asia followed suit, rocketing skyward on Thursday. Jakarta surged 4.44 percent, Manila jumped 3.16 percent, Mumbai climbed 2.72 percent and Bangkok rose 3.20 percent. The Indonesian Navy will deploy the ‘KRI Malahayati-362’ warship to secure Bali’s waters in the run-up to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit early next month, the Navy confirmed. Commandant of KRI Malahayati-362 Lt. Col Mochammad M Irchamni noted in a statement delivered via the Information Service of the Navy’s Eastern Fleet Command (Koartim) here on Wednesday that his side was assigned to conduct patrols to ensure the security of the VVIP guests, particularly the Indonesian president, who will visit the island to check on preparations for the APEC summit. During the President’s visit, KRI Malahayati362 and the Navy’s maritime air patrol aircraft will guard the waters surrounding the “island of the gods” to prevent enemy infiltration and sabotage missions launched on the sea. Besides these efforts, Koarmatim’s coordination task force will support security efforts from the air when the president lands at Bali’s Ngurah Rai airport and will remain active until he leaves the island. “The president is a state symbol, and we are obliged to mobilize all our strength, personnel, and equipment to ensure his safety,” Irchamni said. Before being assigned to secure the Bali waters, KRI Malahayati had just returned from patrolling the Indonesian waters in the Ambalat region, which borders Malaysia. Irchamni hoped that KRI Malahayati’s presence along Bali’s coastal areas would provide a strong sense of security, particularly for foreign tourists and the participants of the Miss World beauty pageant. The police chief called on the people, including opponents of the summit, to support the event because of the trust afforded to Indonesia to host the summit, which could see participation from delegates from 21 member countries. “Indonesia has been entrusted with hosting the summit. We hope the public will recognize this and support the event,” he added.

OKUMA, Japan - Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe insisted Thursday that radiationcontaminated water has been contained at the country’s crippled nuclear power plant and said he would fend off “rumors” regarding Fukushima’s safety, as he took a firsthand look at the complex. After a three-hour plant tour, Abe said he stood by the reassurance about Tokyo’s safety that he gave to the International Olympic Committee before the city of 35 million was awarded the right to host the 2020 summer games earlier this month. “One of the main purposes of this visit was to see it for myself, after I made those remarks on how the contaminated water has been handled,” Abe told workers and reporters. Officials have acknowledged that groundwater contaminated with radioactive leaks has been seeping into the Pacific since soon after meltdowns and explosions crippled the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant following the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami. Abe said he was convinced that all of the contaminated water had been contained. “In light of that, I will work hard to counter rumors questioning the safety of the Fukushima plant,”

he said. During his tour, Abe was shown some of the 1,000 tanks containing radioactive water, water treatment equipment and a chemical dam being installed along the coast steps meant to contain the water leakage. Abe said he urged plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Co. to ensure it has enough funding on hand to take care of urgent work. From the battlefield he penned a letter, sweetly telling the little girl how much he loved her and longed to see her. But he never made it home, and the letter and his Purple Heart medal ended up in a box thousands of miles away from Peggy Smith, the daughter who was told nearly nothing about him. Years after a Missouri woman found the box of mementos and underwent an exhaustive search to find the daughter who grew up hesitant to ask about her father because it upset her mother, the letter and medal will be handed over to Smith on Saturday in what figures to be an emotional ceremony in Dayton, Nev., where Smith lives. It was 14 years ago that Donna Gregory was helping her thenhusband clean out his grandparents’ home in Arnold, Mo., a St. Louis suburb. Gregory stumbled upon a cardboard box filled with World War II memorabilia related to Eddington, though no one knows why. Eddington was from Leadwood, Mo., about 75 miles southwest of St. Louis. Neither Gregory nor Smith know what connection the Arnold couple had to Eddington. Gregory sorted through several letters, including the War Department’s message to Eddington’s mother about his death in Italy in June 1944, four months after his daughter’s birth. At the bottom of the box she found the Purple Heart, the medal awarded to members of the Armed Forces wounded or killed in action. Gregory, of St. Louis, then spent the next 14 years in libraries and on the Internet trying to track down the elusive daughter. She called every Eddington in Missouri, trying to find the right Peggy. No one could help. Earlier this year she enlisted the help of friends and began reaching out on Facebook, leading to a breakthrough - she found Peggy Smith. Nearly 2,000 miles from St. Louis, Smith said she knew her father died in the war, and knew he earned the Purple Heart. But she didn’t know what happened to it. Smith figured her mother had lost the medal or given it away - until Gregory called. “It was an unforgettable moment,” Gregory said. Smith said she was “stunned.”

2 Cars With Skeletal Remains Found at Bottom of Oklahoma Lake

The two rusty, mud-caked cars that Oklahoma officials stumbled onto at the bottom of a lake, where they found six skulls and skeletal remains, sat 3 feet apart under 12 feet of “super murky” water. To add to the mystery, officials say, the cars might have gone into the water a year-and-a-half apart, more than 40 years ago. “It’s just so crazy,” Oklahoma Highway Patrol spokeswoman Betsy Randolph Oklahoma Highway Patrol’s lake patrol division was testing new sonar equipment last week in Foss Lake in Custer County, Okla., when they detected some unusual echoes that indicated the presence of large, metal objects under the water. “Our guys just naturally assumed this may have been a stolen car pushed off into the lake. Sometimes that happens,” Randolph said. “As soon as they pulled up the first vehicle, they found a femur bone in the driver’s seat.” Three feet away, they found a second car with more skeletal remains in it. They have since recovered six skulls and matching bones. Randolph did not know how far from the shore the cars were but said there is a concrete ramp on the edge of the lake for people to back their boats into the water.

INDONESIA Embassies in Indonesia warn of Miss World attack threat Agence France-Presse

JAKARTA - Embassies in Indonesia are warning their nationals that extremists may attack the Miss World beauty pageant on the resort island of Bali after a series of hardline Muslim protests. The United States, British and Australian embassies have in recent days all issued warnings. “The embassy has received information that extremist groups may be planning to disrupt the Miss World pageant being held in Bali from September 8 to 28, potentially through violent means,” said the US embassy in Jakarta in a statement. The British embassy said that “local Islamist vigilante groups have threatened to hold large-scale demonstrations to disrupt the Miss World pageant”. It added that “extremist groups may also be planning to attack the event”. Bali has been attacked by Islamic militants before, most notably in 2002 when bombings on the resort island killed 202 people, many of them foreigners. However, Indonesia, which has the world’s biggest Muslim population, has

waged a crackdown on militant groups over the past decade and has succeeded in dismantling key networks. In recent weeks thousands of radicals have taken to the streets protesting against the decision to hold Miss World in Indonesia, denouncing it as “smut” and “pornography”. The growing protest movement prompted the government to order the entire event be moved to Hindumajority Bali, where extremist influence is minimal. Originally only the early rounds were due to take place on the island, with later rounds and the September 28 final to be held in and around the capital Jakarta. While the vast majority of Indonesians practise a moderate form of Islam, a vocal hardline fringe has become increasingly influential in recent years.

JAKARTA - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has called for increased bilateral relations between Indonesia and China. “We hope to continue what had been achieved by former President Hu Jintao and Prime Minister Wen Jiabao; we hope that the relation between Indonesia and China could be further strengthened under the leadership of President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Li Keqiang,” said the president on Thursday. The Indonesian head of state made this statement when receiving Member of the Chinese State Council Yang Jiechi and his delegation, who arrived in Jakarta for the Fourth Dialogue on Indonesia-China Political, Legal and Security Issues. “The relations between Indonesia and China are currently strong, and hopefully, they are further strengthened in future,” he noted. Relations between the two countries have flourished significantly,

following the signing of a strategic partnership accord in April 2005. The improved ties between the two countries would also contribute to regional stability and welfare, said Yudhoyono. He hopes that the fourth dialogue session could help strengthen bilateral ties in future. Indonesian Ambassador to China and Mongolia Imron Cotan said bilateral relations have developed significantly. Bilateral trade increased from US$26.6 billion in 2009 to US$66.6 billion in 2012. China is Indonesia’s largest trade partner at present, and bilateral trade value is expected to reach US$80 billion by 2015. The value of Chinese investments in Indonesia was recorded at US$2.2 billion in 2012. The number of Chinese tourists visiting Indonesia increased from 246 thousand in 2009 to almost one million in 2012.

JAKARTA - A Nigerian woman tearfully prayed and recited Koranic verses as she won a beauty pageant exclusively for Muslim women in the Indonesian capital Wednesday, a riposte to the Miss World contest that has sparked hardline anger. The 20 finalists, who were all required to wear headscarves, put on a glittering show for the final of Muslimah World, strolling up and down a catwalk in elaborately embroidered dresses and stilettos. But the contestants from six countries were covered from head to foot, and as well as beauty they were judged on how well they recited Koranic verses and their views on Islam in the modern world. After a show in front of an audience of mainly religious scholars and devout Muslims, a panel of judges picked Obabiyi Aishah Ajibola from Nigeria as the winner. While the event in a Jakarta shopping mall paled in comparison to Miss World on the resort island of Bali, in which scores of contestants are competing, Ajibola was nevertheless overwhelmed. Upon hearing her name, the 21-year-old knelt down and prayed, then wept as she recited a Koranic verse. She said it was “thanks to almighty Allah” that she had won the contest. She received 25 million rupiah ($2,200) and trips to Mecca and India as prizes.

Ajibola told AFP before the final that the event “was not really about competition”. “We’re just trying to show the world that Islam is beautiful,” she said. Organisers said the pageant challenged the idea of beauty put forward by the British-run Miss World pageant, and also showed that opposition to the event could be expressed non-violently. Eka Shanti, who founded the pageant three years ago after losing her job as a TV news anchor for refusing to remove her headscarf, bills the contest as “Islam’s answer to Miss World”. “This year we deliberately held our event just before the Miss World final to show that there are alternative role models for Muslim women,” she told AFP. “But it’s about more than Miss World. Muslim women are increasingly working in the entertainment industry in a sexually explicit way, and they become role models, which is a concern.” Hosted by Dewi Sandra, an Indonesian actress and pop star who recently hung up her racy dresses for a headscarf, the pageant featured both Muslim and pop music performances, including one about modesty, a trait the judges sought in the winner. The pageant, which also featured bright Indonesian Islamic designer wear, is a starkly different way of protesting Miss World than the approach taken by Islamic radicals.

Ken Norton, heavyweight boxing legend, dies at 70

Former US heavyweight boxing champion Ken Norton, who beat Muhammad Ali, has died at the age of 70, his son says. Norton, who had been in poor health following a series of strokes, died at a care facility in Las Vegas, Nevada. He broke Ali’s jaw in their first bout in San Diego, California, in 1973, which Norton won. In their last meeting on September 1976 at New York’s Yankee Stadium, Ali won a narrow and controversial decision to retain the heavyweight title. “I’m sure he’s in heaven now with all the great fighters,” Gene Kilroy, Ali’s former business manager, told the Associated Press news agency. “I’d like to hear that conversation.” Norton began boxing during his time in the US Marines, and turned professional shortly after he left the military in 1967. He won a heavyweight title in 1977, but lost the following year in a classic 15-round fight with Larry Holmes. After his boxing career ended, Norton appeared in several movies and became a fight commentator. He had five children, one of whom went on to play professional football and now coaches in the National Football League for the Seattle Seahawks.

Swiss champion Basel had never won a game in England until coming from behind on Wednesday at Stamford Bridge to beat Chelsea 2-1 in Group E. The winner came in the 82nd minute after Marco Streller seized on slack defense at the near post to meet a corner and flick a header past goalkeeper Petr Cech. “I am responsible for everything,” Mourinho said. “Especially after a bad result.” Although Oscar lit up a drab start by curling Chelsea in front before half time, the 2012 European Cup winners and reigning Europa League champions missed a succession of chances to extend their lead after the break. And Basel, which beat Manchester United in the 2011-12 group stage, made Chelsea pay for its wastefulness when Mohamed Salah began the comeback in the 71st by bending in the equalizer. Milan face prospect of another ‘transitional’ season

AC Milan spent most of last season playing catch-up, lamenting injuries and somehow muddling through with a combination of luck and tenacity. Their scrappy 2-0 Champions League win over Celtic on Wednesday, thanks to two goals in the last 10 minutes, suggested that this season will not be any different. The seven-times European champions, who seem to be in a perennial transition phase, may have been forgiven thinking that the worst was over after they somehow managed to finish last season third in Serie A to qualify for the Champions League. Coach Massimiliano Allegri kept his job during the summer, largely thanks to pressure from the ultras, and with Mario Balotelli leading the attack, there was general optimism that this season would see a sharp improvement. But some last minute wheeling and dealing in the summer transfer window seems to have unsettled the team rather than strengthening it. Forward Alessandro Matri, replacing the injured Stephan El Shaarawy, was signed from Juventus but he spent most of Wednesday’s game on the ground, com-

plaining to the referee, and there was no sign of any understanding with Balotelli. Midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng, who has had highs and lows in three years at San Siro, was surprisingly sold to Schalke 04 at the last minute, before former World Player of the Year Kaka was brought back from Real Madrid. MADRID - Turkey playmaker Arda Turan has agreed to extend his contract with Atletico Madrid by two years to 2017, the La Liga club said on Thursday. The 26-year-old, who has become a huge fan favourite since joining from Galatasaray, helped Atletico win the Europa League, the King’s Cup and the European Super Cup during his first two seasons in the Spanish capital. “After these two years wearing the Atletico shirt I feel part of this big family,” Arda, who scored in Wednesday’s 3-1 Champions League win at home to Zenit St Petersburg, said on the club’s website (www.clubatleticodemadrid.com). “The fact that I am so pleased to be staying on is thanks to my team mates and to everything we are achieving together,” he added.
