BEIJING — The actor son of Hong Kong action superstar Jackie Chan has been detained in Beijing on drug-related charges, the latest high-profile celebrity to be ensnared in one of China’s biggest anti-drug crackdowns in two decades. Jaycee Chan, 31, was detained last Thursday together with the 23-year-old Taiwanese movie star Kai Ko, Beijing police said late Monday on their official microblog, identifying them only by their surnames, ages and nationalities. It was unclear why the detentions were announced several days later. Police said both actors tested positive for marijuana and admitted using the drug, and that 100 grams of it were taken from Chan’s home. Jaycee Chan’s management, M’Stones International, apologized to the public on his behalf for the “social impact” caused in a statement on their website. It said they would “supervise his rehabilitation and help him return to the right path.” The detentions follow a declaration in June by President Xi Jinping that illegal drugs should be wiped out and that offenders would be severely punished. In Beijing alone, more than 7,800 people have been caught in the crackdown, police said. A string of celebrities have been among those detained, including Gao Hu, who acted in Zhang Yimou’s 2011 movie “The Flowers of War.” Last week, 42 Beijing performing arts associations and theater companies signed a pledge to not hire any actors connected with drugs in an event organized by the capital’s Narcotics Control Office and the Beijing Cultural Bureau. Pi Yijun, an anti-drug adviser for the Beijing government, said authorities were targeting celebrities because “these people have a large number of fans, so their behavior tends to have a huge influence on young people.” Chinese state broadcaster CCTV aired footage of a police search of the younger Chan’s home in Beijing in which he is depicted, his face pixelated, showing officers where he stashed bags of mari-
juana. Police said they acted on a tipoff from the public. Chan is accused of accommodating drug users, an offense that carries a maximum sentence of three years’ imprisonment — a far more serious charge than that of drug consumption. Two other people detained in the same case were accused of selling drugs while Ko is accused of drug consumption. China named the elder Chan an anti-drug ambassador in 2009. Ko, the Taiwanese star, was part of an anti-drug campaign two years ago, CCTV reported, showing footage of the campaign in which he joins other celebrities in a chorus declaring: “I don’t use drugs.” On Tuesday, Ko was shown on CCTV, his face pixelated, tearfully apologizing to his fans and family. “I feel very regretful, very sorry to all the people who support me... I’ve been a very bad example, I’ve made a very big mistake,” Ko said. In a statement online, his management company, Star

Ko, whose real name is Ko Chentung, became a sensation after his 2011 film “You Are the Apple of My Eye,” a box-office hit in Taiwan. He played the boyfriend of one of the protagonists in China-produced “Tiny Times 3.0,” which appealed to young female audiences and knocked “Transformers 4” off the No. 1 spot as the most watched film after its release in the mainland last month. Illegal drug use has ballooned in China in recent decades, after being virtually eradicated following the 1949 communist revolution. He said, in the law on the culture-based tourism development in Bali, the agriculture was the culture of Balinese community. This potential should continue to be preserved for the welfare of society
on the island. “Bali Tourism is cultural tourism and Balinese culture is agriculture. Regional Bylaw of Bali on tourism is also cultural tourism. This means that in the Law we have been mandated to preserve our culture (agriculture—Ed), not tourism based on taste or desire,” he said.
According to him, cultural tourism positioned people as the subject of development, not the object. On that account, it was time for players to enjoy the added value of all the activities related to tourism. Moreover, based on statistics, travelers spent their money around IDR 10 trillion each year. Of the IDR 10 trillion spent during a year, Bali could just absorb through food products at the amount of IDR 2.7 trillion. So, the opportunity remained open to be worked on with the value at IDR 6.3 trillion. “Necessarily, this must lead us to sit down together to think about
how many trillions of the potential that we can seize for the welfare of our people. To build the people’s welfare indeed requires money,” he explained. He said that one of the ways to work on the remaining potential was by taking advantage of the cultural potential, namely the agriculture. “Well, one of the potentials can be found the solution through agrotourism. We must draw the remaining amount by offering agro products related to tourism, so that some portion of potential of IDR 6.3 trillion can be seized for the people’s welfare,” he said. Admission fee increase must be coupled with arrangement of Kintamani

BANGLI - The Bangli Culture and Tourism Agency plans to raise the admission fee to the Kintamani tourist area in 2015. As planned, the current ticket price at IDR 10,000 will be increased to IDR 30,000 for foreign travelers and IDR 20,000 for domestic travelers. The increase in the admission fee will also be accompanied with the increase in the arrangement of the Kintamani tourist object.

It was intended to check the scene. It was revealed by the Head of Bangli Culture and Tourism Agency, Wayan Adnyana, when contacted recently. He said that so far the plan to increase the admission fee had been socialized to some travel agencies and tourism businesses in Bali. In harmony with the increase in admission fee, the agency would also make improvement at the Kintamani tourist object. “Obviously with the increase in admission fee, the arrangement will also be increased and we have started it today,” he said. In addition to increasing the arrangement of tourist object, his party also claimed to still monitor the existing fee collection booth. So far, the monitoring was done regularly with a number of agencies coalesced into the monitoring team. Adnyana claimed the monitoring conducted all this time had never found any fraud committed by collecting officers. “So far, we have not found such a thing. Nevertheless, we will still do regular monitoring,” he explained. Previously, Regent of Bangli, Made Gianyar, also planned to raise the admis-
sion fee to Kintamani tourist object by 200 percent. Aside from planning to raise the admission fee, the regent also targeted the tourist arrival to Kintamani to reach 1 million people a year. With such amount of tourist arrival, then Bangli would be able to reach the regionally generated revenue (PAD) as much as IDR 30 billion each year. He described that later on half of the government revenue would be used to repair and remodel the activity at the geosite area. By that way, the natural beauty would be well maintained and could draw travelers to come to Kintamani. Meanwhile, half of the revenue would be used to support the welfare of employees in the form of allowance (TPP). So, it was expected that all employees in Bangli could work hard. Especially for the Culture and Tourism Agency, the regent requested the agency to further develop the presence of existing geosite. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

The headphones will integrate biometric sensors to allow users to collect fitness data and “achieve peak physical performance,” according to an Intel statement Thursday. It noted that “an energy-harvesting audio jack” eliminates the need for extra batteries or chargers. Brian Nohe, president of SMS Audio, said the new device means the company is “the first to provide
this level of integrated, seamless and helpful biometric information to inspire customers to advance their fitness experiences.” Intel said the listening devices will “bring smart exercise capabilities to athletes of all levels later this year.” Michael Bell, corporate vice president at Intel, said the company “is focused on driving innovation in the wearable technology segment by partnering with lifestyle brands like SMS Audio that complement our technology and design expertise.”

The robot’s co-creator David Smith, who teaches in the department of communication studies at Ontario’s McMaster University, said Thursday that the creators wanted to situate robotics and artificial technologies into unlikely scenarios and push the limits of what robotics is capable of. Smith said hitchBOT has a builtin GPS system and is programmed with mobile technology similar to a smartphone, with speech recognition software that works in conjunction with language modelling. The robot links questions with answers by looking for certain key words and is programmed to scour Wikipedia to spit out regionally relevant facts. The team also programmed hitchBOT to track its adventures online and take pictures to post on Twitter and Instagram. It didn’t take long for HitchBOT to become a social media sensation and, truth be told, many of the people who have offered him a ride already knew about him before encountering the bizarre contraption. Smith said its Ins-
tagram following was approaching 11,000 people, its Facebook account had garnered more than 41,000 “likes” and it has nearly 32,000 Twitter followers. “Social and traditional media have really ensured that HitchBOT is well-known,” Smith said. “Some (drivers) have tried to search its location. And in most cases, hitchBOT has had multiple offers.” Along the way, hitchBOT was invited to a pow-wow with the Wikwemikong First Nation group, where the robot was dubbed Biiaabkookwe, according to its Twitter feed. It later hitched a ride with Belgian tourists. Currently, Smith said HitchBOT is hanging out with the British Columbia rock band The Wild, which is taking it to its next performance. When it reaches Victoria this weekend, Steve Sxwithul’txw, an aboriginal broadcast producer, plans to pick it up. He said he has arranged a canoe welcome, high tea at the Empress Hotel and ferry ride to Seattle. Smith said his team monitors hitchBOT via GPS and social media but drivers have been in
control of where they take it and leave it. Smith said the team had replacement robots to continue the journey in case anything happened to hitchBOT, but so far, the robot has not been mistreated. The child-sized robot is able to able to stand, making it visible to drivers via a retractable tripod. It has a car seat attached to its torso so drivers can strap it into their cars using seatbelts. The robot, which comes equipped with solar panels on its torso, communicates to people that it can be recharged by plugging it into car cigarette lighters or regular outlets. Matthew Berry, of Alberta, said some friends picked up the robot while heading to a wedding in Golden, B.C. They picked it up on the border between Alberta and Calgary, where its previous driver was looking to offload it. “It was good fun; we took it out onto the dance floor to, well, do the real robot,” Berry said. “It was funny because it was a very meticulously planned wedding so I wasn’t sure how the bride would react, but she loved it!”

Actually the uncontrolled hotel room growth has kindled this unfair competition. “Government, regulator and the association should set the lowest price of hotel rooms because in Bali there are one- to five-star hotel. In normal conditions, the room rate is normal, but during low season there is no price limit, so it freely falls,” said Chairman of the PHRI Denpasar, IB Sidartha Putra, in Denpasar. According to him, during low season many large hotels or five-star hotels that were owned by non-local businessmen di-

According to him, hoteliers were allowed to raise hotel room rates as high as possible, but it was forbidden to sell hotel rooms below the specified minimal standards. JEMBRANA - Culinary center built by Jembrana government at former Gilimanuk Terminal has not been used for years. None of the traders occupy the refurbished shanties. They prefer to sell at their own stall because visitors rarely come to the terminal.
The culinary center in Gilimanuk Terminal is not occupied by sellers so it is very quiet.

At Gilimanuk, dozens of steamed chicken stalls formerly occupied the culinary center in the middle of the former terminal. The idea of combining a number of stalls to sell at the location in fact did not work. Actually, it could only run for a couple of months. Since only a few visitors dropping in and lacking of employees, the traders finally decided to leave the former passenger longue of the terminal. A number of residents met revealed if the location was inaugurated in the mid of 2010. Formerly, the traders of steamed chicken were unified at the same location. Right now, all the traders have stopped trading there because it is quiet and hot. “Visitors prefer to shop at the trader’s own stall and no one wants to buy here,” said Nyoman Tasmen. Although the building was still quite good, the location at Jineng Agung hamlet is then empty and taken advantage for parking space. In the 1980s through 1990s, the former Gilimanuk Terminal was very famous. Unluckily, the terminal was then dormant. Similar fate was also
experienced by providers of horse buggy service to local harbor. Headman of Gilimanuk, Gede Ngurah Widiada, said on Monday (Aug 18) the culinary center had indeed been running. Due to trader lacked of employees and heat at noon, they did not occupy it any longer. So, what happened next? According to him, the land including the building should be taken advantage with a more mature planning. Meanwhile, the Head of Jembrana Development Planning Board, I Ketut Swijana, said the former Gilimanuk Terminal was included in the Environmental Building Layout Plan (RTBL), belonging to Sub Regional Development Region 2 comprising the Gilimanuk Market and Green Open Space of Gilimanuk Square. “Gilimanuk is divided into five Sub Regional Developments and we are going to present the development plan before the parliament with relevant agencies. The fish farmers could only succumb to natural incident as ever occurred in 2011. Based on observation on Monday (Aug 18), many fish living in Lake Batur were in floundering condition. Allegedly it happened due to the influence of sulfur currently contained in the water of Lake Batur. Such phenomenon also made people living in the surrounding droves go to the lake. They collected fish by using nets and other simple tools. According to one of the local fish farmers at Songan village, Kintamani, Wayan Wirawan, due to natural conditions, thousands of his fish cultivated in floating net cage were afflicted by the impact
as well. He admitted to be unable to do much to rescue the fish. The incident once happened three years ago began to be known to fish farmers on Monday morning (Aug 18). As a result of the sulfur content, the fish usually swimming swiftly turned to look drunk. When compared to similar phenomenon three years ago, the current condition was more severe. Nevertheless, he admitted to be unable to ascertain his losses due to sulfur eruption in the lake bottom. It happened because he had not checked the fish in the cage. According to him, when the water was in the current condition the fish in the cages could not be visited. If he visited, they would die quickly. “When we see the fish, they will go down to the bottom of the lake. And it will make fish die faster,” he said. Eruption points were located in the area of Seked, Kedisan, Buahan, Abang Songan and Toya Bungkah. “As a result of the sulfur content, many fish were gasping for air. So far, there has been no report on fish death. Hopefully, the incident will not happen like that,” he said. To ensure the sulfur content in the lake, his party was then doing a test on the water quality of Lake Batur. In addition, his party coordinated the natural incident with geologists. Protesters filled the streets after nightfall Monday, and officers trying to enforce tighter restrictions at times used bullhorns to order them to disperse. Police deployed noisemakers and armored vehicles to push demonstrators back. Officers fired tear gas and flash grenades. Capt. Ron Johnson of the Missouri Highway Patrol, who is in charge of security in Ferguson, said bottles and Molotov cocktails were thrown from the crowd and that some officers had come under heavy gunfire. At least two people were shot and 31 were arrested, he said. He did not have condition updates on those who were shot. Johnson said four officers were injured by rocks or bottles. Demonstrators no longer faced the neighborhood’s midnight-to-5 a.m. curfew, but police told protesters that they could not assemble in a single spot and had to keep moving. After the streets had been mostly cleared, authorities ordered reporters to leave as well, citing the risk from gunfire that had been reported. A photographer for the Getty photo agency was arrested while covering the demonstrations and later released. Two German reporters were arrested and detained for three hours. Eurozone exports hit by Russian crisis

BRUSSELS - Economic crisis in Russia and sluggish demand from Turkey weighed on hopes for an export-led recovery in the eurozone in June, official data showed on Monday. Exports from the 18-nation single currency zone dipped by 0.5 percent in June compared with May to 162.2 billion euros ($217 billion), the Eurostat statistics agency said. “June’s eurozone trade data provided yet further evidence that the external sector remains too weak to make up for the region’s feeble domestic recovery,” said Jessica Hinds of Capital Economics. Eurozone exports were dragged down by a 14 percent slump in demand from sanction-hit Russia and an 8 percent drop from Turkey, which is suffering an economic slowdown. With imports up a slight 0.5 percent, this meant countries in the eurozone posted a marginally higher 16.8billion-euro trade surplus in June, up from 15.4 billion euros the month before. “Weaker external demand played an important part in the slowdown of the eurozone export-led recovery in the second quarter,” said Christian Schulz, economist at Berenberg Bank. Policy-makers in Brussels had hoped the eurozone economy was recovering on the back of exports from periphery countries that have pushed through reforms recommended by the EU. But there are fears the crisis in Ukraine will weigh on growth this year and some EU leaders have warned that sanctions against Russia, which came into effect this month, could further derail the bloc’s fragile recovery from the eurozone debt crisis. “Not just the crisis of Russia’s economy, but also the temporary slowdown in the US and some emerging markets contributed to the spring lull,” said Schulz. Growth figures last week showed the eurozone economy ground to a halt in the second quarter, casting a cloud over the crisis-hit region. In June, powerhouse Germany was the only major eurozone economy to post a significant increase in exports for the year to date, which rose three percent from the same period in 2013. Exports in Spain and Portugal, which slumped into deep recessions during the eurozone debt crisis, dropped one percent. Greek exports were down 8 percent. Meanwhile, demand for eurozone exports was up a strong 8 percent in Britain, where an economic recovery is underway. Demand from China was also up 8 percent. “The UK was one of the few very strong bright spots for trade in the first half of the year,” Berenberg’s Schulz said. In June, Britain posted the widest trade deficit in the 28-nation EU, at 48.1 billion euros, followed by France, Spain and Greece. Overall, the EU posted a trade surplus of a 2.9 billion euros in June, pushed wider than the previous month by a drop in imported energy. Looking ahead in the eurozone, Hinds of Capital Economics forecast improvement “as exporters start to feel some benefit from the recent depreciation of the euro”. A strong euro especially against the dollar has been criticised by both governments and companies as a major constraint to expanding exports.

Other than cremation, 11 days after that would be resumed with ngeroras, atma wedana and ngelinggihang dewa hyang. The ngeroras involved 278 symbols of the deceased that would be cremated. They also included 16 symbols of body from Lombok. Chairman of the Ritual Committee, Suanda, was proud because for the second time after 10 years ago his party could hold back similar cremation en masse. He was proud because he could bring together some 130 members of the same clan temple with over 600 people scattered due to wandering. (013)

WASHINGTON — Unemployment rates rose in 30 U.S. states last month, even as employers in two-thirds of the states stepped up hiring. The trends reflect an increase in job-hunters nationwide as an improving economy has encouraged more people to seek work. The Labor Department said Monday that unemployment rates fell in eight states in July and were unchanged in 12. At the same time, hiring rose in 36 states, fell in 13, and was unchanged in Iowa. The national unemployment rate ticked up to 6.2 percent in July from 6.1 percent in June, the government said earlier this month, even as employers added 209,000 jobs. The reason the rate rose nationwide even as hiring increased is that more Americans launched job searches but didn’t find work. That lifted the number of unemployed. Still, the rise in people seeking jobs suggests they’re more optimistic about their prospects.
The jobless aren’t counted as unemployed unless they’re actively seeking work. Mississippi had the highest unemployment rate in July, at 8 percent, its first month with the highest since the 2008-2009 Great Recession. In June, Mississippi and Rhode Island had tied with rates of 7.9 percent. Rhode Island had the highest rate for several months earlier this year. After recession ended in June 2009, Michigan and then Nevada typically had the highest rates. In July, Georgia had the secondhighest rate, at 7.8 percent. Michigan, Rhode Island and Nevada were tied with the third-highest, at 7.7 percent.
North Dakota had the lowest rate in the nation, as it has for many years, at 2.8 percent. The state is benefiting from an oil and gas drilling boom. Utah and Nebraska were tied with the next lowest rates, at 3.6 percent. The biggest job gains were in Texas, which added 46,600 jobs, followed by California, with 27,700 and Michigan, with 17,900. Despite this month’s increases, state unemployment rates have significantly improved nationwide in the past year. That trend has reduced regional differences. The Midwest had the lowest rate of the nation’s four largest regions in July, at 5.9 percent. The West had the highest, at 6.6 percent. The rate was 6.1 percent in the South and the Northeast. That gap of 0.7 percentage points from the lowest to highest is narrower than a year earlier. In July 2013, the South had the lowest rate, at 7.1 percent, and the West the highest, at 8.1 percent.

Bangli has a unique temple showing a strong Chinese influence known as Dalem Balingkang Temple. Structure of the temple is unique because it was formerly said to serve as a palace to avoid the attack from other kings. Formerly, the Dalem Balingkang Temple belonged to the temple complex of Tanggun Titi—standing for the end of bridge and had a spring. In this temple complex lie some shrines dedicated to Ratu Ngurah Sakti Tanggun Titi, Ratu Mas Melanting, Ratu Sakti Gede Penyarikan and Sang Hyang Haji Saraswati. The second complex after passing a square occurs a cangapit building, namely an entrance equipped with a monarchic sitting when the king watched the Jro Gede mepada sur-
rounding the temple. The middle courtyard only has a few buildings, only consisting of a meeting hall, the abode of all deities and a shrine of Ratu Ayu Subandar. The shrine is used to worship Kang Ci Wi and is highly believed by Chinese descendant community to bring in blessings. In the main complex or innermost courtyard lies the worship place of Petak Grand Palace comprising the eleven and nine-tiered meru shrines. Similarly, there is also ancestral worship of Dalem Balingkang in the form of brick chamber and seven-tiered meru shrine to remind of the Seven Deities. Besides, there are long pavilion with 24 columns and 20 columns as well as mundar-mundar pavilion with 16 columns. History of the temple is much re-
vealed in the Sukawana Inscription (Goris, 1954). It said that Sukawana village was hit by storms and the palace of Jaya Pangus was badly damaged, so that Jong Les moved to Balingkang. Balingkang itself is derived from two words Bali + ingkang. Orally and based on written evidence, it is associated with the wedding of King Jaya Pangus Harkajalancana who ruled during the period of Caka Year 1103-1191 or 1181-1269 AD. King Jaya Pangus had two queens, Paduka Bhatari Sri Parameswari Indujaketana and Paduka Sri Mahadewi Cacangkaja Cihna. In the existing folklore, his Chinese wife was named Kang Ci Wi, namely a daughter of trader from China. Then, the words Bali-Ing-Kang were combined into Balingkang. Temple (Batur Temple) of Kintamani is mentioned about Ida Ratu Gede Ngurah Subandar or Kongco Cong Po Kong, where Empu Liem became the prominent assistant to teach war strategy and governed with principles of Asta Brata. One of the war strategy relics is immortalized in the dance of Baris Dadap, Baris Tumbak, Baris Perisi or Baris Tamiang, Baris Bajra to Baris Cina. Baris or warrior dance represents knighthood. Strong Chinese influence is evidenced at a number of villages in Kintamani having geographical names derived from Mandarin words. For example, the name of Pingan village is actually derived from the word Ping An meaning safety. Songan village comes from the Song An, Siakin village from the Sia In and Paketan village from Paket
An. Early Chinese settlers also got farmland at Payangan and they gave litchi seedlings to the King of Bali. The tradition of gallivanting show (ngelawang) is also similar to the tradition of Chinese Lion Dance coming from one house to another. Many kinds of ornamental styles used to embellish the house and furniture in Bali are also adopted from Chinese arts. Such diverse influences have been widely recognized as native culture to Bali. Even, Balinese traders believe that Kongco Cong Po Kong or Ida Ratu Gede Ngurah Subandar in Kintamani is a protector that gives blessing to their trade. All 298 people on board died when Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was shot down on July 17. The plane was heading to Kuala Lumpur from Amsterdam and was shot out of the sky over an area of eastern Ukraine controlled by pro-Russia separatists. The victims included 43 Malaysians and 195 Dutch nationals. With fighting between the rebels and Ukrainian forces ongoing near the crash site, victims’ remains were gathered and sent to the Netherlands for identification. Malaysian Defense Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said Tuesday that 28 Malaysian victims had been identified so far, including 15 passengers and 13 crew members. The remains of at least 15 Malaysians and a Dutch national who was married to a Malaysian
will arrive in Kuala Lumpur on Friday, Hishammuddin said at a news conference, adding that the exact number to arrive would be known later in the week. The government has declared Friday a national day of mourning. Hishammuddin said Malaysia would not be competing with the Netherlands in terms of how the bodies are received. The Netherlands observed a minute’s silence and solemn ceremonies were held when the remains of the victims arrived in the country last month. Dutch authorities said last week that they had identified 127 victims in all. The separatists have been widely blamed for firing a missile that brought the Boeing 777 down, but have publicly denied responsibility. The Netherlands and other countries have launched criminal investigations. Malaysia Airlines has been hit by two major disasters this year, adding to its longstanding financial woes. In March, Flight 370 from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing disappeared with 239 people on board after flying far of course. That jet still has not been found despite an exhaustive ongoing search in an area of the southern Indian Ocean where it is believed to have gone down.
In an apparent attempt to pressure Hamas, Egypt said early Monday it would co-host an international fundraising conference for Gaza — but only if a deal is reached first. That appears to play into the hands of the West Bank-based Palestinian Authority, which is seeking to regain a Gaza foothold, seven years after Hamas ousted it from power in the densely populated coastal strip. Hamas, whose officials are part of the Palestinian delegation in the Cairo talks, has emerged weaker from the month-long Gaza war. The militant group finds itself pressured by both Egypt and the Palestinian Authority to accept a less than perfect deal with Israel, but needs to show the people of Gaza that the enormous sacrifices they endured in the fighting were not in vain. There were few signs of any major breakthroughs. A member of the Palestinian delegation said that Israel was offering to ease the Gaza blockade by opening border crossings to some goods and people, but was insisting that it retain the right to limit the imports of material like cement, and chemical and metal products, which Israel says can be used for weapons manufacturing. Hamas fears the arrangement would allow Israel to retain the right to close the crossings whenever it wished and is pushing for more Palestinian input into such decisions. The Palestinian official also told The Associated Press that Israel wants to put off for an unspecified date any discussion on the opening of a Gaza seaport and airport and the release of Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails. The Palestinians, however, say they will only agree to postpone discussing the seaport and airport for “a month after a ceasefire agreement, with other issues like .... the prisoners,” the official said. He spoke condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss negotiations
with the media. He also said that Israel agrees to extend the maritime territory in which Gaza fisherman can venture out from two to four kilometers (three to six miles) and eventually to 19 kilometers (12 miles) from the shore, but that it was standing firm against Hamas’ demand for unsupervised exports from the strip. The Gaza blockade, imposed after Hamas seized control of the territory in 2007, has greatly limited the movement of Palestinians in and out of the territory of 1.8 million people, restricted the flow of goods into Gaza and blocked virtually all exports. Israel says the blockade is needed to prevent arms smuggling, but critics say the measures have amounted to collective punishment. Jamal Shobaky, the Palestinian ambassador in Cairo voiced disappointment with the Israeli stance, particularly on the question of the blockade. “What the Israelis have
offered so far in the talks is not removing the blockade but rather easing it,” he said. The latest round of Gaza fighting was precipitated by massive Israeli arrests of Hamas members in the West Bank in the aftermath of the abduction and killing of three Israeli teenagers in June. Their deaths were followed by the slaying of a Palestinian youth in Jerusalem in what was a likely revenge attack. On Monday, Israel’s Shin Bet security service said it had uncovered a coup plot due to information gleaned from the West Bank arrests. It described the plot as a Hamas coup attempt aimed at toppling Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Since the war started with an Israeli air campaign on July 8, followed by the introduction of troops on the ground nine days later, many of the strip’s structures have been destroyed and tens of thousands of people remain huddled in U.N. shelters.

Two French journalists accused of violating stay permit Antara
JAYAPURA - The Immigration authorities have accused two French television journalists of violating their stay permit in the easternmost Indonesian province of Papua. To achieve this cultural heritage, visitor must first visit a neat entrance gate with nicely arranged stairs made of river stone. Meanwhile, the entrance gate is made of sand stone. It is said that the cave was made by Kebo Iwa, a Balinese vice regent having supernatural power. There is a stone containing the footprints whose size exceeds the size of an ordinary human foot and it is believed to belong to Kebo Iwa. At the time of making the staircase, the stone is said to move by itself in accordance with the will of Kebo Iwa. Uniquely, every time of stepping down the stone staircase, its number is always different. When counting them for again and again, the amount will not be the same. In the niche can be found several sculptures such as a stone board carved with the motif of a pot. In the meantime, in the PengukurUkuran temple can be found several carved stones and a stone door that reads Saka Year 1116 or be equal to 1194 AD. In the inscription is mentioned the name Dharmaanyar and this may be the former name of the temple. To support the tourism sector, this Goa Garba tourist attraction has been equipped with facilities like a spacious parking lot. Ballmer, 58, who paid an NBA-record $2 billion for the Clippers, greeted the several thousand gathered at the team’s Staples Center home with the primal screams that punctuated meetings at the Seattle technology company. “I couldn’t be more honored or excited or fired up to be here,” Ballmer exclaimed as he was welcomed with a standing ovation. Ballmer, who said he will be a courtside fixture at games, took over the Clippers last week, ending Sterling’s 33 years of ownership that were marked by decades of losing and second-tier status to local rival, the Lakers. Based on information of local residents, Goa Garba is a hermitage niche carved on the wall of cliff edge of the Pakerisan River. On top of this hermitage lie a number of pools and showers where at pool side sits a hole leading to a cave.
To achieve this cultural heritage, visitor must first visit a neat entrance gate with nicely arranged stairs made of river stone. Meanwhile, the entrance gate is made of sand stone. It is said that the cave was made by Kebo Iwa, a Balinese vice regent having supernatural power. There is a stone containing the footprints whose size exceeds the size of an ordinary human foot and it is believed to belong to Kebo Iwa. At the time of making the staircase, the stone is said to move by itself in accordance with the will of Kebo Iwa. Uniquely, every time of stepping down the stone staircase, its number is always different. When counting them for again and again, the amount will not be the same. In the niche can be found several sculptures such as a stone board carved with the motif of a pot. In the meantime, in the PengukurUkuran temple can be found several carved stones and a stone door that reads Saka Year 1116 or be equal to 1194 AD. In the inscription is mentioned the name Dharmaanyar and this may be the former name of the temple. To support the tourism sector, this Goa Garba tourist attraction has been equipped with facilities like a spacious parking lot. Although most of the population around the Goa Garba has livelihood as farmers, they have intelligent mind, so that the ancient relics can be preserved well.

Ballmer, 58, who paid an NBA-record $2 billion for the Clippers, greeted the several thousand gathered at the team’s Staples Center home with the primal screams that punctuated meetings at the Seattle technology company. “I couldn’t be more honored or excited or fired up to be here,” Ballmer exclaimed as he was welcomed with a standing ovation. Ballmer, who said he will be a courtside fixture at games, took over the Clippers last week, ending Sterling’s 33 years of ownership that were marked by decades of losing and second-tier status to local rival, the Lakers. The NBA banned Sterling for life in April, days after his privately taped remarks imploring a girlfriend not to publicly associate with black people were published. In March, Flight 370 from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing disappeared with 239 people on board after flying far of course. That jet still has not been found despite an exhaustive ongoing search in an area of the southern Indian Ocean where it is believed to have gone down.
In an apparent attempt to pressure Hamas, Egypt said early Monday it would co-host an international fundraising conference for Gaza — but only if a deal is reached first. That appears to play into the hands of the West Bank-based Palestinian Authority, which is seeking to regain a Gaza foothold, seven years after Hamas ousted it from power in the densely populated coastal strip. Hamas, whose officials are part of the Palestinian delegation in the Cairo talks, has emerged weaker from the month-long Gaza war. The militant group finds itself pressured by both Egypt and the Palestinian Authority to accept a less than perfect deal with Israel, but needs to show the people of Gaza that the enormous sacrifices they endured in the fighting were not in vain. There were few signs of any major breakthroughs. A member of the Palestinian delegation said that Israel was offering to ease the Gaza blockade by opening border crossings to some goods and people, but was insisting that it retain the right to limit the imports of material like cement, and chemical and metal products, which Israel says can be used for weapons manufacturing. Hamas fears the arrangement would allow Israel to retain the right to close the crossings whenever it wished and is pushing for more Palestinian input into such decisions. The Palestinian official also told The Associated Press that Israel wants to put off for an unspecified date any discussion on the opening of a Gaza seaport and airport and the release of Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails. The Palestinians, however, say they will only agree to postpone discussing the seaport and airport for “a month after a ceasefire agreement, with other issues like .... the prisoners,” the official said. He spoke condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss negotiations
with the media. He also said that Israel agrees to extend the maritime territory in which Gaza fisherman can venture out from two to four kilometers (three to six miles) and eventually to 19 kilometers (12 miles) from the shore, but that it was standing firm against Hamas’ demand for unsupervised exports from the strip. The Gaza blockade, imposed after Hamas seized control of the territory in 2007, has greatly limited the movement of Palestinians in and out of the territory of 1.8 million people, restricted the flow of goods into Gaza and blocked virtually all exports. Israel says the blockade is needed to prevent arms smuggling, but critics say the measures have amounted to collective punishment. Jamal Shobaky, the Palestinian ambassador in Cairo voiced disappointment with the Israeli stance, particularly on the question of the blockade. “What the Israelis have
offered so far in the talks is not removing the blockade but rather easing it,” he said. The latest round of Gaza fighting was precipitated by massive Israeli arrests of Hamas members in the West Bank in the aftermath of the abduction and killing of three Israeli teenagers in June. Their deaths were followed by the slaying of a Palestinian youth in Jerusalem in what was a likely revenge attack. On Monday, Israel’s Shin Bet security service said it had uncovered a coup plot due to information gleaned from the West Bank arrests. It described the plot as a Hamas coup attempt aimed at toppling Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Two French journalists accused of violating stay permit Antara
JAYAPURA - The Immigration authorities have accused two French television journalists of violating their stay permit in the easternmost Indonesian province of Papua. The two French journalists who visited Indonesia on tourist visas violated Article 122, letter a of the Immigration Law Number 6 of 2011 on the abuse of stay permit, Head of Immigration Division at the Papua Provincial Office of the Law and Human Rights Ministry Luki Agung Binarto stated on Tuesday. Therefore, the two French journalists, Thomas Charles Danbois and Valentine Bourrat, who worked for Arte TV will be placed in custody at the Papua provincial police, he remarked. “We are still coordinating with the police to ensure that they will not be put in the same cell as the other detainees, the more so because one of them is a woman,” he stated. Eurozone exports hit by Russian crisis

BRUSSELS - Economic crisis in Russia and sluggish demand from Turkey weighed on hopes for an export-led recovery in the eurozone in June, official data showed on Monday. Exports from the 18-nation single currency zone dipped by 0.5 percent in June compared with May to 162.2 billion euros ($217 billion), the Eurostat statistics agency said. “June’s eurozone trade data provided yet further evidence that the external sector remains too weak to make up for the region’s feeble domestic recovery,” said Jessica Hinds of Capital Economics. Eurozone exports were dragged down by a 14 percent slump in demand from sanction-hit Russia and an 8 percent drop from Turkey, which is suffering an economic slowdown. With imports up a slight 0.5 percent, this meant countries in the eurozone posted a marginally higher 16.8billion-euro trade surplus in June, up from 15.4 billion euros the month before. “Weaker external demand played an important part in the slowdown of the eurozone export-led recovery in the second quarter,” said Christian Schulz, economist at Berenberg Bank. Policy-makers in Brussels had hoped the eurozone economy was recovering on the back of exports from periphery countries that have pushed through reforms recommended by the EU. But there are fears the crisis in Ukraine will weigh on growth this year and some EU leaders have warned that sanctions against Russia, which came into effect this month, could further derail the bloc’s fragile recovery from the eurozone debt crisis. “Not just the crisis of Russia’s economy, but also the temporary slowdown in the US and some emerging markets contributed to the spring lull,” said Schulz. Growth figures last week showed the eurozone economy ground to a halt in the second quarter, casting a cloud over the crisis-hit region. In June, powerhouse Germany was the only major eurozone economy to post a significant increase in exports for the year to date, which rose three percent from the same period in 2013. Exports in Spain and Portugal, which slumped into deep recessions during the eurozone debt crisis, dropped one percent. Greek exports were down 8 percent. Meanwhile, demand for eurozone exports was up a strong 8 percent in Britain, where an economic recovery is underway. Demand from China was also up 8 percent. “The UK was one of the few very strong bright spots for trade in the first half of the year,” Berenberg’s Schulz said. In June, Britain posted the widest trade deficit in the 28-nation EU, at 48.1 billion euros, followed by France, Spain and Greece. Overall, the EU posted a trade surplus of a 2.9 billion euros in June, pushed wider than the previous month by a drop in imported energy. Looking ahead in the eurozone, Hinds of Capital Economics forecast improvement “as exporters start to feel some benefit from the recent depreciation of the euro”. A strong euro especially against the dollar has been criticised by both governments and companies as a major constraint to expanding exports.

Other than cremation, 11 days after that would be resumed with ngeroras, atma wedana and ngelinggihang dewa hyang. The ngeroras involved 278 symbols of the deceased that would be cremated. They also included 16 symbols of body from Lombok. Chairman of the Ritual Committee, Suanda, was proud because for the second time after 10 years ago his party could hold back similar cremation en masse. He was proud because he could bring together some 130 members of the same clan temple with over 600 people scattered due to wandering. (013)

WASHINGTON — Unemployment rates rose in 30 U.S. states last month, even as employers in two-thirds of the states stepped up hiring. The trends reflect an increase in job-hunters nationwide as an improving economy has encouraged more people to seek work. The Labor Department said Monday that unemployment rates fell in eight states in July and were unchanged in 12. At the same time, hiring rose in 36 states, fell in 13, and was unchanged in Iowa. The national unemployment rate ticked up to 6.2 percent in July from 6.1 percent in June, the government said earlier this month, even as employers added 209,000 jobs. The reason the rate rose nationwide even as hiring increased is that more Americans launched job searches but didn’t find work. That lifted the number of unemployed. Still, the rise in people seeking jobs suggests they’re more optimistic about their prospects.
The jobless aren’t counted as unemployed unless they’re actively seeking work. Mississippi had the highest unemployment rate in July, at 8 percent, its first month with the highest since the 2008-2009 Great Recession. In June, Mississippi and Rhode Island had tied with rates of 7.9 percent. Rhode Island had the highest rate for several months earlier this year. After recession ended in June 2009, Michigan and then Nevada typically had the highest rates. In July, Georgia had the secondhighest rate, at 7.8 percent. Michigan, Rhode Island and Nevada were tied with the third-highest, at 7.7 percent.
North Dakota had the lowest rate in the nation, as it has for many years, at 2.8 percent. The state is benefiting from an oil and gas drilling boom. Utah and Nebraska were tied with the next lowest rates, at 3.6 percent. The biggest job gains were in Texas, which added 46,600 jobs, followed by California, with 27,700 and Michigan, with 17,900. Despite this month’s increases, state unemployment rates have significantly improved nationwide in the past year. That trend has reduced regional differences. The Midwest had the lowest rate of the nation’s four largest regions in July, at 5.9 percent. The West had the highest, at 6.6 percent. The rate was 6.1 percent in the South and the Northeast. Bangli has a unique temple showing a strong Chinese influence known as Dalem Balingkang Temple. Structure of the temple is unique because it was formerly said to serve as a palace to avoid the attack from other kings. Formerly, the Dalem Balingkang Temple belonged to the temple complex of Tanggun Titi—standing for the end of bridge and had a spring. In this temple complex lie some shrines dedicated to Ratu Ngurah Sakti Tanggun Titi, Ratu Mas Melanting, Ratu Sakti Gede Penyarikan and Sang Hyang Haji Saraswati. The second complex after passing a square occurs a cangapit building, namely an entrance equipped with a monarchic sitting when the king watched the Jro Gede mepada sur-
rounding the temple. The middle courtyard only has a few buildings, only consisting of a meeting hall, the abode of all deities and a shrine of Ratu Ayu Subandar. The shrine is used to worship Kang Ci Wi and is highly believed by Chinese descendant community to bring in blessings. In the main complex or innermost courtyard lies the worship place of Petak Grand Palace comprising the eleven and nine-tiered meru shrines. Similarly, there is also ancestral worship of Dalem Balingkang in the form of brick chamber and seven-tiered meru shrine to remind of the Seven Deities. Besides, there are long pavilion with 24 columns and 20 columns as well as mundar-mundar pavilion with 16 columns. History of the temple is much re-
vealed in the Sukawana Inscription (Goris, 1954). It said that Sukawana village was hit by storms and the palace of Jaya Pangus was badly damaged, so that Jong Les moved to Balingkang. Balingkang itself is derived from two words Bali + ingkang. Orally and based on written evidence, it is associated with the wedding of King Jaya Pangus Harkajalancana who ruled during the period of Caka Year 1103-1191 or 1181-1269 AD. King Jaya Pangus had two queens, Paduka Bhatari Sri Parameswari Indujaketana and Paduka Sri Mahadewi Cacangkaja Cihna. In the existing folklore, his Chinese wife was named Kang Ci Wi, namely a daughter of trader from China. Then, the words Bali-Ing-Kang were combined into Balingkang. Temple (Batur Temple) of Kintamani is mentioned about Ida Ratu Gede Ngurah Subandar or Kongco Cong Po Kong, where Empu Liem became the prominent assistant to teach war strategy and governed with principles of Asta Brata. One of the war strategy relics is immortalized in the dance of Baris Dadap, Baris Tumbak, Baris Perisi or Baris Tamiang, Baris Bajra to Baris Cina. Baris or warrior dance represents knighthood. Strong Chinese influence is evidenced at a number of villages in Kintamani having geographical names derived from Mandarin words. For example, the name of Pingan village is actually derived from the word Ping An meaning safety. Songan village comes from the Song An, Siakin village from the Sia In and Paketan village from Paket

The tradition of gallivanting show (ngelawang) is also similar to the tradition of Chinese Lion Dance coming from one house to another. Many kinds of ornamental styles used to embellish the house and furniture in Bali are also adopted from Chinese arts. Such diverse influences have been widely recognized as native culture to Bali. Even, Balinese traders believe that Kongco Cong Po Kong or Ida Ratu Gede Ngurah Subandar in Kintamani is a protector that gives blessing to their trade. JEMBRANA - Culinary center built by Jembrana government at former Gilimanuk Terminal has not been used for years. None of the traders occupy the refurbished shanties. They prefer to sell at their own stall because visitors rarely come to the terminal.
The culinary center in Gilimanuk Terminal is not occupied by sellers so it is very quiet.

At Gilimanuk, dozens of steamed chicken stalls formerly occupied the culinary center in the middle of the former terminal. The idea of combining a number of stalls to sell at the location in fact did not work. Actually, it could only run for a couple of months. Since only a few visitors dropping in and lacking of employees, the traders finally decided to leave the former passenger longue of the terminal. A number of residents met revealed if the location was inaugurated in the mid of 2010. Formerly, the traders of steamed chicken were unified at the same location. Right now, all the traders have stopped trading there because it is quiet and hot. “Visitors prefer to shop at the trader’s own stall and no one wants to buy here,” said Nyoman Tasmen. Although the building was still quite good, the location at Jineng Agung hamlet is then empty and taken advantage for parking space. In the 1980s through 1990s, the former Gilimanuk Terminal was very famous. Unluckily, the terminal was then dormant. Similar fate was also
experienced by providers of horse buggy service to local harbor. Headman of Gilimanuk, Gede Ngurah Widiada, said on Monday (Aug 18) the culinary center had indeed been running. Due to trader lacked of employees and heat at noon, they did not occupy it any longer. So, what happened next? According to him, the land including the building should be taken advantage with a more mature planning. Meanwhile, the Head of Jembrana Development Planning Board, I Ketut Swijana, said the former Gilimanuk Terminal was included in the Environmental Building Layout Plan (RTBL), belonging to Sub Regional Development Region 2 comprising the Gilimanuk Market and Green Open Space of Gilimanuk Square. “Gilimanuk is divided into five Sub Regional Developments and we are going to present the development plan before the parliament with relevant agencies. BANGLI - Water color change in Lake Batur alleged to happen due to sulfur eruption in the bottom of the lake had an impact on the local fish life. Thousands of fish, both wild fish and the fish cultivated by local farmers in floating net cages floundered and were in agony. The fish farmers could only succumb to natural incident as ever occurred in 2011. Based on observation on Monday (Aug 18), many fish living in Lake Batur were in floundering condition. Allegedly it happened due to the influence of sulfur currently contained in the water of Lake Batur. Such phenomenon also made people living in the surrounding droves go to the lake. They collected fish by using nets and other simple tools. According to one of the local fish farmers at Songan village, Kintamani, Wayan Wirawan, due to natural conditions, thousands of his fish cultivated in floating net cage were afflicted by the impact
as well. He admitted to be unable to do much to rescue the fish. The incident once happened three years ago began to be known to fish farmers on Monday morning (Aug 18). As a result of the sulfur content, the fish usually swimming swiftly turned to look drunk. When compared to similar phenomenon three years ago, the current condition was more severe. Nevertheless, he admitted to be unable to ascertain his losses due to sulfur eruption in the lake bottom. It happened because he had not checked the fish in the cage. According to him, when the water was in the current condition the fish in the cages could not be visited. If he visited, they would die quickly. “When we see the fish, they will go down to the bottom of the lake. And it will make fish die faster,” he said. To that end, his party currently could only monitor the condition of lake water. If within three days such condition did not change, he made sure that thousands of his fish would die. As a fish farmer, he could only succumb to natural incident afflict-
ing him with a number of fish cage farmers. Meanwhile, the Head of Bangli Livestock and Fisheries Agency, Alit Parwata, when asked for his confirmation said the floundering of thousands of fish in Lake Batur occurred as a result of the sulfur content in the lake water. On Thursday afternoon, a small eruption occurred at some points and emitted sulfur in the bottom of the lake. Eruption points were located in the area of Seked, Kedisan, Buahan, Abang Songan and Toya Bungkah. “As a result of the sulfur content, many fish were gasping for air. So far, there has been no report on fish death. Hopefully, the incident will not happen like that,” he said. To ensure the sulfur content in the lake, his party was then doing a test on the water quality of Lake Batur. In addition, his party coordinated the natural incident with geologists. According to him, like the incident in 2011, the phenomenon usually lasted for four days to a week ahead. (ina)

In addition, he said that among all the cases only one case that could be known the culprit where it murdered and burned the body. FERGUSON, Mo. — The National Guard arrived in Ferguson but kept its distance from the streets where protesters clashed again with police, as clouds of tear gas and smoke hung over the St. Louis suburb where an 18year-old was fatally shot by a police officer. Protesters filled the streets after nightfall Monday, and officers trying to enforce tighter restrictions at times used bullhorns to order them to disperse. Police deployed noisemakers and armored vehicles to push demonstrators back. Officers fired tear gas and flash grenades. Capt. Ron Johnson of the Missouri Highway Patrol, who is in charge of security in Ferguson, said bottles and Molotov cocktails were thrown from the crowd and that some officers had come under heavy gunfire. At least two people were shot and 31 were arrested, he said. He did not have condition updates on those who were shot. Johnson said four officers were injured by rocks or bottles. Demonstrators no longer faced the neighborhood’s midnight-to-5 a.m. curfew, but police told protesters that they could not assemble in a single spot and had to keep moving. After the streets had been mostly cleared, authorities ordered reporters to leave as well, citing the risk from gunfire that had been reported. A photographer for the Getty photo agency was arrested while covering the demonstrations and later released. Two German reporters were arrested and detained for three hours. Conservative German daily Die Welt said correspondent Ansgar Graw and reporter Frank Herrmann, who writes for German regional papers, were arrested after allegedly failing to follow police instructions to vacate an empty street. The headphones will integrate biometric sensors to allow users to collect fitness data and “achieve peak physical performance,” according to an Intel statement Thursday. It noted that “an energy-harvesting audio jack” eliminates the need for extra batteries or chargers. Brian Nohe, president of SMS Audio, said the new device means the company is “the first to provide

The robot’s co-creator David Smith, who teaches in the department of communication studies at Ontario’s McMaster University, said Thursday that the creators wanted to situate robotics and artificial technologies into unlikely scenarios and push the limits of what robotics is capable of. Smith said hitchBOT has a builtin GPS system and is programmed with mobile technology similar to a smartphone, with speech recognition software that works in conjunction with language modelling. The robot links questions with answers by looking for certain key words and is programmed to scour Wikipedia to spit out regionally relevant facts. The team also programmed hitchBOT to track its adventures online and take pictures to post on Twitter and Instagram. It didn’t take long for HitchBOT to become a social media sensation and, truth be told, many of the people who have offered him a ride already knew about him before encountering the bizarre contraption. Smith said its Ins-
tagram following was approaching 11,000 people, its Facebook account had garnered more than 41,000 “likes” and it has nearly 32,000 Twitter followers. “Social and traditional media have really ensured that HitchBOT is well-known,” Smith said. “Some (drivers) have tried to search its location. And in most cases, hitchBOT has had multiple offers.” Along the way, hitchBOT was invited to a pow-wow with the Wikwemikong First Nation group, where the robot was dubbed Biiaabkookwe, according to its Twitter feed. It later hitched a ride with Belgian tourists. Currently, Smith said HitchBOT is hanging out with the British Columbia rock band The Wild, which is taking it to its next performance. When it reaches Victoria this weekend, Steve Sxwithul’txw, an aboriginal broadcast producer, plans to pick it up. He said he has arranged a canoe welcome, high tea at the Empress Hotel and ferry ride to Seattle. Smith said his team monitors hitchBOT via GPS and social media but drivers have been in
control of where they take it and leave it. Smith said the team had replacement robots to continue the journey in case anything happened to hitchBOT, but so far, the robot has not been mistreated. The child-sized robot is able to able to stand, making it visible to drivers via a retractable tripod. It has a car seat attached to its torso so drivers can strap it into their cars using seatbelts. The robot, which comes equipped with solar panels on its torso, communicates to people that it can be recharged by plugging it into car cigarette lighters or regular outlets. Matthew Berry, of Alberta, said some friends picked up the robot while heading to a wedding in Golden, B.C. They picked it up on the border between Alberta and Calgary, where its previous driver was looking to offload it. “It was good fun; we took it out onto the dance floor to, well, do the real robot,” Berry said. “It was funny because it was a very meticulously planned wedding so I wasn’t sure how the bride would react, but she loved it!”

according to data furnished by the Bali industry and trade office on Monday.

DENPASAR - The Indonesia Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) of Denpasar Chapter asked the government to set the lowest price of hotel room in order to reduce the tariff war in the sector. Actually the uncontrolled hotel room growth has kindled this unfair competition. “Government, regulator and the association should set the lowest price of hotel rooms because in Bali there are one- to five-star hotel. In normal conditions, the room rate is normal, but during low season there is no price limit, so it freely falls,” said Chairman of the PHRI Denpasar, IB Sidartha Putra, in Denpasar. According to him, during low season many large hotels or five-star hotels that were owned by non-local businessmen di-
minished their room rates. This measure was intended to cover operating costs. “Target of large hotels was only to cover their operating costs. When five-star hotels sell room at IDR 500,000 and one-star hotels sell at IDR 300,000-IDR 450,000, travelers will surely turn to five-star hotels as offering more amenities at low price. Well, one-star hotels owned by local people will be consequently unable to compete,” he said. To that end, he said the government, regulators or association should set up by determining the lowest limit. “So, it will be fair to consumers because it has been in accordance with the money spent and it’s also fair to employers as it enables local businesses with limited capital to compete,” he said. Admission fee increase must be coupled with arrangement of Kintamani

BANGLI - The Bangli Culture and Tourism Agency plans to raise the admission fee to the Kintamani tourist area in 2015. As planned, the current ticket price at IDR 10,000 will be increased to IDR 30,000 for foreign travelers and IDR 20,000 for domestic travelers. The increase in the admission fee will also be accompanied with the increase in the arrangement of the Kintamani tourist object.

It was intended to check the scene. sion fee to Kintamani tourist object by 200 percent. Aside from planning to raise the admission fee, the regent also targeted the tourist arrival to Kintamani to reach 1 million people a year. With such amount of tourist arrival, then Bangli would be able to reach the regionally generated revenue (PAD) as much as IDR 30 billion each year. He described that later on half of the government revenue would be used to repair and remodel the activity at the geosite area. By that way, the natural beauty would be well maintained and could draw travelers to come to Kintamani. Meanwhile, half of the revenue would be used to support the welfare of employees in the form of allowance (TPP). So, it was expected that all employees in Bangli could work hard. Especially for the Culture and Tourism Agency, the regent requested the agency to further develop the presence of existing geosite. Lava rocks of Mount Batur could be arranged in such a way as tourist attraction for special interest and location pre-wedding shooting. (ina)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

BEIJING — The actor son of Hong Kong action superstar Jackie Chan has been detained in Beijing on drug-related charges, the latest high-profile celebrity to be ensnared in one of China’s biggest anti-drug crackdowns in two decades. Jaycee Chan, 31, was detained last Thursday together with the 23-year-old Taiwanese movie star Kai Ko, Beijing police said late Monday on their official microblog, identifying them only by their surnames, ages and nationalities. It was unclear why the detentions were announced several days later. Police said both actors tested positive for marijuana and admitted using the drug, and that 100 grams of it were taken from Chan’s home. Jaycee Chan’s management, M’Stones International, apologized to the public on his behalf for the “social impact” caused in a statement on their website. It said they would “supervise his rehabilitation and help him return to the right path.” The detentions follow a declaration in June by President Xi Jinping that illegal drugs should be wiped out and that offenders would be severely punished. In Beijing alone, more than 7,800 people have been caught in the crackdown, police said. A string of celebrities have been among those detained, including Gao Hu, who acted in Zhang Yimou’s 2011 movie “The Flowers of War.” Last week, 42 Beijing performing arts associations and theater companies signed a pledge to not hire any actors connected with drugs in an event organized by the capital’s Narcotics Control Office and the Beijing Cultural Bureau. Pi Yijun, an anti-drug adviser for the Beijing government, said authorities were targeting celebrities because “these people have a large number of fans, so their behavior tends to have a huge influence on young people.” Chinese state broadcaster CCTV aired footage of a police search of the younger Chan’s home in Beijing in which he is depicted, his face pixelated, showing officers where he stashed bags of mari-
juana. Police said they acted on a tipoff from the public. Chan is accused of accommodating drug users, an offense that carries a maximum sentence of three years’ imprisonment — a far more serious charge than that of drug consumption. Two other people detained in the same case were accused of selling drugs while Ko is accused of drug consumption. China named the elder Chan an anti-drug ambassador in 2009. Ko, the Taiwanese star, was part of an anti-drug campaign two years ago, CCTV reported, showing footage of the campaign in which he joins other celebrities in a chorus declaring: “I don’t use drugs.” On Tuesday, Ko was shown on CCTV, his face pixelated, tearfully apologizing to his fans and family. “I feel very regretful, very sorry to all the people who support me... According to him, cultural tourism positioned people as the subject of development, not the object. On that account, it was time for players to enjoy the added value of all the activities related to tourism. Moreover, based on statistics, travelers spent their money around IDR 10 trillion each year. Of the IDR 10 trillion spent during a year, Bali could just absorb through food products at the amount of IDR 2.7 trillion. So, the opportunity remained open to be worked on with the value at IDR 6.3 trillion. “Necessarily, this must lead us to sit down together to think about
how many trillions of the potential that we can seize for the welfare of our people. To build the people’s welfare indeed requires money,” he explained. He said that one of the ways to work on the remaining potential was by taking advantage of the cultural potential, namely the agriculture. “Well, one of the potentials can be found the solution through agrotourism. We must draw the remaining amount by offering agro products related to tourism, so that some portion of potential of IDR 6.3 trillion can be seized for the people’s welfare,” he said. potential to seize dollar spent by travelers, the government with relevant stakeholders had to fix the infrastructure towards the objects offering the ecotourism. “Let us repair this agricultural activity, so that it becomes a tourist attraction that can provide added value for farmer later. For example, since the agricultural activities are mostly located in rural areas, the roads leading to those areas posing the center of agriculture must be repaired, such as Jatiluwih, Sidemen and Banyuatis’” said the owner of Bagus Agro Pelaga.
