PASADENA — Jennifer Lopez says NBC’s version of “Bye Bye Birdie” will bring the musical back to its stage roots. The story was somewhat “watered down” in the 1963 movie in which Janet Leigh played the role originated by Chita Rivera on Broadway in 1960, Lopez told a TV critics’ meeting Wednesday.

500 Kiosks Burned Down in Senen Market Fire

JAKARTA - Central Jakarta Police chief Sr. Comr. Dwiyono said 500 kiosks in Blocks III and I of Senen Market had been razed by fire. There were no reports of injuries or casualties. Dwiyono said that as of 8 pm local time, Central Jakarta Fire Department still attempted to extinguish the fire in Block III and parts of Blocks I and II. Central Jakarta Police had deployed 400 personnel to arrange the traffic in the intersections of Senen Market and to secure the scene. “The situation is under control and Jakarta Metro Police have sent reinforcement,” he said. Dwiyono said police will launch an investiga-

tion once the fire has been put out. All traders and residents of the Senen Market of Block D are now still rescuing their goods after the morning fire at 04:15 Western Indonesian Time (WIB). Two of them are Eni and Sukamto who owned a stall at Block

D ground floor. Eni saved her sewing machine and some fabrics for her business. “All of them are safe now,” said Eni when met at the fire scene, Thursday, January 19, 2017. Eni did not know exactly what started out the fire that vanquished the 2nd and 3rd floors of Senen Market. With her uncle, Sukamto, Eni arrived at the scene at 06:00 WIB. According to Eni, the floors that were on fire are the ones that sell the National Armed Forces’ (TNI) outfits and Civil Servants uniform; and also some second-

hand clothes. Sukamto told Tempo that his stall had been burned down twice since he started selling in Senen Market. “When I was in Block 3, my loss reached Rp300 million. But this time, eventhough our merchandises are safe, we still have six months left on the contract,” said Sukamto. Same thing had been felt by Heri, a 38-year-old trader. He was forced to save his merchandises such as waist belt, sunglasses, wallets and other things. He claimed

Environmental quality index of Bali at 60.86

River slightly contaminated, land cover still lacks

DENPASAR - Environmental quality index (IKLH) of Bali is currently in substantial level, namely 60.86. There are three indicators used in the calculation of IKLH namely the index of water quality, index of air quality and index of land cover. Only the index of air quality can be said to be good or clean from pollution.

“To reach the status of Bali as green province, the environmental quality index should reach 70. Air is relatively clean, but water and land cover need to be improved,” said the Head of the Bali Environmental Agency, Gede Suarjana, in the meeting of regional bylaw draft special committee for the regional mid-term development plan (RPJMD) Bali 2013-2018 and regional bylaw draft on Environmental Protection and Management (PPLH) at the Bali House of Representatives on Tuesday (Jan. 17). Suarjana added that IKLH 70 can only be obtained if the water quality index reaches 70, the air quality index (90) and index of land cover (45). Currently, the water quality index is recorded at the level of 60.1, air quality index (82.86) and land cover index (36.86). Water quality index describes the condition of 401 rivers, chiefly 22 cross-district rivers that are in slightly contaminated. Some rivers even contributed to an average of 6-8 cubic meters of waste per day into the sea. “This causes pressure on the sea, especially in the areas of tourist attraction,” he explained. In terms of land cover, added Suarjana, it still lacks because the percentage of forest land is only 22.7 percent. In the meantime, this acreage is impossible to increase. On that account, the land cover needs to be pursued through the green open spaces and city parks. In addition to water quality and land cover, the other aspect is the concern for the environment that should also be improved. “If we see the Environmental Concern Behavior Index, it shows the position at 0.42. So, the concern for the

environment remains very low,” he explained. Suarjana continued that technology alone is not enough to restore the environmental quality in order to be good. Local knowledge is also required to be applied in terms of social aspect, particularly in maintaining the upstream area. A member of the special committee regional bylaw draft on RPJMD Bali 2013-2018 and regional bylaw draft on the PPLH Bali, Ida Bagus Pada Kusuma, specifically highlighted the land cover in Bali. From his observations, the trees widely planted today are no longer for supporting forest but for commercial purposes. Therefore, the Environment Agency needs to closely monitor so that a region can be planted effectively. “Empower effective plants that are really useful for soil or forests,” he said. In the meantime, Chairman of the Special Committee, I Nyoman Adnyana, said that environmental problems are quite complex because they often have conflict with the development. Prevention efforts need to be formulated in the regional bylaw draft on the Environmental Protection and Management (PPLH). “Our awareness is low and the damage is severe. On that account, we would like to formulate a regulation to reduce and overcome the existing problems. Secondly, we hope this formulation can be applied so that will not be useless. Thus, the regional bylaw is made to regulate, and then can be applied,” he explained. (kmb32)

Indonesia currently faces ‘a warfare’ WARFARE does not necessarily involve armed conflicts, but it can also pose destruction of a country by damaging the elements which have made the country strong all this time. In reality, this condition happens to the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI). This republic is now facing a ‘warfare’ without a weapon called cyber warfare (cyber war). This was expressed by Major General (Ret) Dr. (HC) IGK Manila, in an exclusive interview with BaliTV, Bali Post and Indonesia Network. This Secretary of the Presidential Advisory Board Member explained that cyber war occurs when this country is faced with the uncontrolled technological advances. “We are now facing cyber ??warfare where the social media has made play with our world. It is more hazardous than weapons and can destroy our state by attacking the ideology of Pancasila as well as political, social and economic aspect,” he said. According to him, the war is no longer weapon against weapon, but the enemy will destroy Indonesia with armless model and tactics namely with the other models. One of which is the cyber warfare. “Just imagine that our rupiah currency can be ridiculed and people commit defamation of religion. Other countries can stop it (cyber war), why cannot we? This happens due to the reading habit in Indonesia is 0.00 percent, but the ownership of hand phone is ranked fourth in the world. Supposed that we have IT, but without coupled with reading habit, we’ll be easily fooled,” he explained. Through cyber warfare, he said that people of Indonesian cannot distinguish which is right and wrong. This condition has attacked everywhere to shake diversity with racial issues. “We are Unity in Diversity. Never try to uniform them. We must keep and maintain, so that it becomes a unitary state of the Republic of Indonesia,” he said. This Bali’s leader hoped there would be soon a non-military legal instrument, so that such attack can be overcome. Indonesia may no longer lose an inch of the land. “We’ve lost two islands without bullets. People do not know and never feel that we are played off. Imagine what will happen with this war next ten years,” he said. On that occasion, IGK Manila also advised to maintain the integrity of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia to safeguard pluralism since each region has its own peculiarities. “Bung Karno prohibited high-rise buildings in Bali because he did not want the integrity and authenticity of Bali would disappear. Underpass to be built at roundabout of Ngurah Rai Airport—toll road

DENPASAR - Now the government is planning the construction of an underpass at the roundabout of the Bali Mandara toll road-Ngurah Rai Airport. Actually this plan is not something new because it is in the same package with the construction of Bali Mandara toll road in 2013. At that time, the underpass development was still left behind because the toll road workmanship was rushed by APEC event becoming the reason for the construction of Bali Mandara toll road. “Its feasibility study has just been finished, and now we are preparing the detailed engineering design (DED),” said the Head of National Road Authority VIII, I Ketut Darmawahana, to Bali Post on Wednesday (Jan. 18). Ketut estimated the length of

the underpass from Nusa Dua to Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai is approximately between 500 and 600 meters. The whole budget will be on the account of central government because it is a national road. However, his authority could not determine how much budget is needed for it. “The budget is not set yet but will be calculated based on the DED,” he said briefly. Chief of the Bali Development Planning Board (Bappeda), Research and Development, Putu Astawa, hoped the DED of underpass can have been completed this year. time. Then, it was made a roundabout with a larger size expected to be able to address the congestion problem approximately 3 to 5 years after the toll constructed. After that, it can be ascertained to face congestion,” said this Democratic Party politician. As the impact, continued Adnyana, the Bali Mandara toll road will no longer be effective to break the bottleneck. It is quite reasonable if the underpass plan is ‘revived’ today. However, the government must ensure the readiness of budget so that the underpass does not stop in a discourse only. “In other words, indeed the solution is the underpass. It has been designed. But it must be accompanied with a plan and considering the funding capability. It cannot be separated,” he added.

Chairman of Commission III of the Bali House of Representatives, Nengah Tamba, supported the underpass plan in order to provide good facilities for people. Moreover, the airport area is significant point for tourism image of Bali. Before returning to their home country, at least travelers can enjoy leniency towards the airport. “Do not let us see travelers dropping off from their taxi and carrying suitcase because they worry about missing the plane. If they go to airport anxiously, it is not good. It will also have an impact on people’s mobility and government affairs. But when it runs smoothly, it will be much nicer and more effective and efficient,” he concluded. (kmb32)

TABANAN - Rabies bite case occurred in January 2017 for the second time in Tabanan. After the first case affecting a resident of Anyar village in Kediri, the second case happened to three people simultaneously at Grokgak Gede, Tabanan. A puppy bit the victims Putu Trisna Sani, 2, Nyoman Putri Giani, 10, and Kadek Sukerni, 15. The three victims suffered minor bite wounds on right calf and left thumb. Division Head of the Livestock and Animal Health at the Tabanan Agriculture Agency, I Made Arya Putra, said on Wednesday (Jan. 18) the bite incident happened on Tuesday (Jan. 17). The biting puppy is just a few months old and newly bought from Beringkit Market at the end of December 2016. “It belongs to species of Kintamani dog and bought at Beringkit Market last December,” he said. The puppy is known to have not been vaccinated, and on Tuesday (Jan. 17) was acting strangely and then bit three people who were in the house at once. Seeing such suspicious symptom, the dog owner, Edi, then reported the case to Tabanan Livestock Agency. After that, the agency came down to location and found the indication leading to rabies on the puppy so that it was decided to eliminate, and the brain sample was taken for examination. As a result, the puppy was positive to rabies. Regarding this incident, Arya appealed to the public to be careful in buying a dog and may not trans-

fer or take any dog from one district to another district. “When buying, make sure the dog has got rabies vaccine by requesting its medical record. More importantly, do not move any dogs from one district to another district,” he explained. In the meantime, Division Head of P2MPL at the Tabanan Health Agency, Ketut Nariana, explained that the three victims bitten already got treatment on the wounds and first anti-rabies vaccine (VAR). Moreover, the joint team of the province and district has come down to location to provide dissemination regarding rabies. He emphasized that to handle dog bite case must wash the wound first with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes before being taken to the nearest health providers. This measure can at least reduce the amount of virus that enters the body. On the other hand, he also asserted that VAR is not always given in the case of dog bite. It is only given in positive cases based on laboratory tests. To that end, the people bitten are expected to report immediately and keep track the biting dog so that it can be eliminated and brain samples can be examined. However, if the dog bite does not show symptoms of illness, it can be observed for at least a week. When the dog dies within a week, it means the dog is positive to rabies and can be reported to the nearest rabies center for examination of samples and the victim get VAR. (kmb24)

Farmers must map out planting pattern BANGLI- All this time, farmers cultivating fruits and vegetables such as lettuce, tomatoes, tangerines et cetera are frequently faced with overproduction during massive harvest. Moreover, due to abundant agricultural products, farmers are even unable to sell so that they let theirs perish. To avoid this condition, farmers must be smart in managing their plants. It is meant to prevent overproduction and losses from happening again. Head of the Bangli Agriculture and Fishery Agency, I Wayan Sukartana, said that farmers must be observant in the mapping of plant. In other words, if they are now planting cabbage, later on they must plant others like mustard. “It must be anticipated by strategies of mapping the production capacity. In this sense, farmers must perform mapping of the cropping pattern. So far, we see that farmers only consider to plant commodities having great potential and their produce can be sold without mapping system. If planting cabbage, they will not plant other commodities. Actually, such planting is technically less perfect,” said Sukartana on Wednesday (Jan. 18). Sukartana hoped that in the future his agency could apply cropping pattern to production areas, in this case the farmers. For instance, Songan is ideal for particular potential commodities. The area must be divided in such a way for cultivation of chili, cabbage, tomatoes et cetera. Thus, it can be mutually substituted. “Since vegetables and fruits are perishable commodities, there should be a mapping for the planting,” he said. He added that to overcome this there must be a commitment of farmers to their collectors. For example, farmers sometimes underprice their produce when over-production occurs, but when the selling price is expensive they at times do not comply with the commitment. In a sense, they say to have no stock whereas they do. “This most frequently occurs at lower level. Otherwise, they will suffer losses, so that collectors have a strategy to lower the price,” he revealed. Division Head of Food Crops and Plantation, Wayan Tegal Sujana, stated that farmers at lower level have speculative selling system. Farmers want to make money first, though technically his division suggested chiefly for fruit and vegetable production to be prepared continuously by pruning and thinning of the fruits. By this way, fruits will not be harvested once during the massive harvest. “By doing so, in terms of readiness and quality, the fruits produced can be better so that they can compete later on in the marketplace,” he said. He suggested that vegetable farmers should dare to oppose the season. In this case, farmers dare to plant beyond the commodity’s season with the consequences of giving more intensive maintenance because vegetables are susceptible to rain. In rainy season, the price of vegetable is definitely higher, while in dry season will be cheaper. That happens because farmers cannot plant in rainy season due to high risk. Conversely, during dry season the harvest will be abundant and the price will go down. “For example, in the current rainy season the price of chili is high because farmers cannot plant. To anticipate this condition, mapping of planting is required. It is different from coffee and clove belonging to non-perishable commodity and can be stored longer. Usaba mumu in at Bungaya village

To maintain peace, residents preserve tradition of ‘burning’ memedi

BUNGAYA customary village, Bebandem, Karangasem, is one of the old villages in Bali. Every customary and religious ritual at the village takes place uniquely. One of them can be seen in the implementation of usaba mumu or familiarly known as usaba memedi. It’s named as usaba memedi because the ritual is marked with the ‘burning’ of memedi (spirits). The procession is carried out amid the pounding sounds of kulkul (wooden split drum) throughout customary hamlet and clan temples at night. How does the implementation look like? Usaba mumu is held once a year falling in January (Balinese seventh month). This year, peak of the implementation took place on Wednesday (Jan. 18). Fifteen days in advance, residents have looked for ritual paraphernalia ingredients such as young coconut leaf, fruit, palm leaf and others at local customary village. Then, three days before the peak of procession, all the people create the figure of memedi made from various leaves, such as the leaf of aba, bamboo, eggplant and pulet. The leaves are arranged in such a way to form humanoid figure coming with tribal marking by using lime betel. “This paraphernalia is ritualized first in the morning at respective family temple. At night, it is taken out for the ritual procession,” said the apparatus of Bungaya customary village, I Gede Adi Krisna Widana, just before the peak of the ritual began. The penyagaan means that people must be able to control their passions as preparation to pay homage. The guard figure is placed in front of their respective alley. It will be dismantled at midday, after going through particular ritual. “According to local belief, all the guard figures can later be mounted again in paddy fields or anywhere in order to avoid any catastrophe,” said Krisna. In the afternoon, the whole community, especially women, will say prayers at Pemuhunan Temple. This temple is quite unique located under a sacred banyan tree without any shrines. Prior

to the prayers, thousands of women are sitting around a banyan tree along with their offerings before the worship around 22:00 On the other hand, men are preparing the memedi figure that will be burned at the location of guard figure in the morning. After completing the ritual at the Pemuhunan Temple, then memedi figure is burned simultaneously marked with the sounds of kulkul at 15 customary hamlets and clan temples that keep pounding until the procession is over. Burning the memedi figure has the meaning of burning all the natures of anger and negative traits in human beings, so that people can live harmonious and peaceful life. The ashes are ritualized again after formed into human figure at the location of burning. When everything is over, the offerings prepared are immediately offered at the ash-made figure. “After the procession, it usually rains at the night symbolizing if the ritual has run smoothly,” said Krisna. Three days after this procession, the entire local residents say prayers at the village temple. This process is called ngelisin where all pilgrims invoke holy water. After making introspection for three days, all the local people go through life with a new atmosphere. Basically, this procession symbolizes the journey of self-control and restores the butha kala to maintain the balance of macrocosm and microcosm. (gik)

Were opportunities for clues from MH370 debris missed?

SYDNEY — Three nations shelled out around $160 million and years’ worth of work on the underwater search for missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. The result: No plane. The only tangible — and arguably most important — clues into what happened to the aircraft have come courtesy of ordinary citizens, who bore the costs themselves. The deep-sea sonar search for the vanished Boeing 777 was suspended on Tuesday after officials conceded defeat following the most expensive, complex aviation search in history. But while search crews spent years trawling in futility through a remote patch of the Indian Ocean, people wandering along beaches thousands of kilometers (miles) away began spotting pieces of the plane that had washed ashore. Those pieces have provided crucial information to investigators and prompted some to question whether Malaysia, Australia and China — who funded the hunt for the underwater wreckage — missed key opportunities by failing to organize coastal searches for the remnants that drifted to distant shorelines. “It would have been good to have been getting people looking for debris,” said David Griffin, an Australian government oceanographer who worked on an analysis of how the debris drifted in a bid to pinpoint where the plane crashed. “I think that was a job that fell between the cracks of whose responsibility it was.” Since the plane vanished on a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on March 8, 2014, more than 20 pieces of debris confirmed or believed likely to have come from the aircraft have turned up on beaches along the east coast of Africa and on islands including Madagascar. All of the parts have been found by local residents and tourists who stumbled upon them, and by Blaine Gibson, an American amateur sleuth who launched his own, self-funded hunt for debris after working with oceanographers to estimate where bits of the plane may have ended up.

Several family members of Flight 370’s passengers asked officials to launch a search along the coastlines for parts of the plane. When their pleas went unheeded, they banded together and traveled to Madagascar to encourage residents to keep an eye out for more debris. The family members, who covered all their travel expenses themselves, even offered a potential reward to anyone who found a piece of Flight 370. Grace Nathan, a Malaysian whose mother was on board Flight 370, was among those who made the trip to Madagascar last month. She is deeply frustrated that the families felt compelled to take on the task themselves, and that the underwater search yielded nothing. “Every single clue to date has been found by private individuals by chance,” Nathan said. “Not a single piece of hard evidence has been found by the official search.” Nathan believes the governments’ failure to search for coastal debris may have resulted in missed clues. “They should have done more to initiate something like what we did,” she said. “We are laypeople. We don’t have the kind of reach they have, we don’t have the kind of contacts that they have.” The Australian Transport Safety Bureau, which led the search for the underwater wreckage, said Thursday that it’s impossible to know whether organized searches of the coastlines would have yielded more debris. “The dynamic nature of the ocean means that items are continually being cast ashore and carried away again — a beach cannot simply be ticked off as ‘searched’ at a single point in time,” the agency said in

Too much time had passed, they argued, and ocean currents are too volatile to make it possible to trace the pieces back to their origin. Yet the recovered parts of the plane provided valuable insight into what happened to it. They confirmed, firstly, that the aircraft went down somewhere in the Indian Ocean. ate actions. Investigators operated on the theory that the plane was on autopilot in its final hours before it ran out of fuel and plummeted into the sea. A key question was whether anyone was still at the controls when the plane hit the water, which would affect how far the plane could glide after running out of fuel. Critics who favor the theory that Capt. Zaharie Ahmad Shah hijacked the plane say he could have made a controlled ditch at sea in order to minimize debris and help the plane disappear as completely as possible. Lebanon gets a new government, now it needs a new economy

BEIRUT - After years of political deadlock, Lebanon finally has a new government. Now it needs a new economy. Battered by war in neighbouring Syria, neglected by wrangling politicians and caught in rivalry between Saudi Arabia and Iran, the pillars of the economy - remittances from overseas workers, tourism and real estate - are not what they were. Long-term, Lebanon is searching for new sources of growth, which fell from 8-9 percent to below 2 percent when Syria’s civil war began in 2011. Beirut is working to start oil and gas exploration, offering support to technology start-ups and urging its vast diaspora to bring their brains and bank accounts home. But before these dreams can be realised, the government, which started work in the new year after the country spent 2-1/2-years without a president, has an urgent to-do list. The country’s infrastructure has been awaiting repair since the 15year civil war ended in 1990: roads are clogged with cars, beaches are littered with waste, internet links are slow or patchy and cuts to power and water supplies are frequent. Reams of legislation, such as a hydrocarbon industry tax law and the privatisation of the stock market, await completion. Top of Prime Minister Saad Hariri’s list is a budget, which the country has not had since 2005, and a better environment for business, his economic adviser Mazen Hanna told Reuters. The cabinet encompasses most sides of the country’s political spectrum and all of its religious sects, making any agreement a challenge. “The first sign of the government’s seriousness is if they will pass a new budget,” Hanna said. “This is the priority now.” Without one, there will be little chance of tackling Lebanon’s growing fiscal deficit and debt-toGDP ratio, forecast by the World Bank at 155 percent this year, the third highest in the world. The government’s term may be as short as five months if longoverdue parliamentary elections take place on time, but Hanna said it can work on telecoms and the electricity shortages that drive people to hook up to expensive

private generators. It also plans to resolve problems with rubbish disposal which spurred anti-government protests last year and the cabinet includes an anti-corruption minister for the first time. The fate of Lebanon’s economy is important not only for the livelihoods of 4 million Lebanese, but for avoiding even more chaos in the Middle East: the country is home to more than one million Syrian refugees and half a million Palestinian refugees, and has its own history of instability. CENTRAL BANK ROLE Following its 1975-90 civil war, much of Lebanon’s reconstruction focused on reestablishing its tourism image as “the Paris of the Middle East”, particularly for wealthy Gulf Arabs. Beirut’s cooler climate and less restrictive social mores are a big draw for people from conservative Saudi Arabia, but bouts of civil strife, assassinations, deadlocked government and regional rivalries are still taking their toll. An executive at a luxury hotel in Beirut last summer lamented the dearth of wealthy Gulf Arabs and their $3,000 room service bills. Saudi Arabia advised citizens last February against travel to Lebanon, part of a dispute over the powerful role of the Iranian-backed Lebanese Shi’ite group Hezbollah. President Michel Aoun, a Christian ally of Hezbollah, said after a fence-mending visit to Riyadh this month he was confident Gulf tourists would return. In the absence of political leadership, the central bank has quietly steered policy, using stimulus packages and financial engineering to keep foreign reserves stable and growth ticking over. Hindu community in Bali will celebrate Saraswati feast day on Saturday and Banyupinaruh Day on Sunday. Both feast days fall every six months (210 days). Saraswati Day falling on Saniscara Umanis Watugunung aims to worship the Goddess Saraswati as the creator of science.

On that day, pupils, college students, teachers, lecturers, priests and other Hindu communities perform worship. In a series of the ceremony, devotees prepare herbal drink and pradnyan rice. Philippines, communist rebels resume peace talks in Rome

MANILA — Philippine negotiators and communist guerrillas are set to resume peace talks in Rome on Thursday, with the Maoist insurgents warning that alleged government violations of an accord on human rights may prompt them to end a monthslong ceasefire.

The presidential adviser to the talks, Jesus Dureza, said the government is optimistic “with managed expectations” about the resumption of the Norwaybrokered negotiations in the Italian capital. “These issues, although difficult, are surmountable with both sides sharing common aspirations for peace,” Dureza said in a statement. Rebel chief negotiator Fidel Agcaoili was less optimistic, saying the guerrillas have raised a number of complaints, including alleged government breaches of a 1998 accord on respecting human rights and another pact on the safety of guerrilla consultants. Agcaoili said the complaints, including the failure to release nearly 400 detainees the rebels consider political prisoners, made extending a five-month cease-fire “untenable.” The guerrillas also expressed concern over President Rodrigo Duterte’s brutal crackdown on illegal drugs, which have left thousands of drug suspects dead, and his decision to allow the burial of dictator Ferdinand Marcos in a heroes’ cemetery in November, Agcaoili said.

Innocent people have been killed in Duterte’s crackdown “due to brutal, reckless and indiscriminate methods employed by the police in its anti-drug operations,” Agcaoili said. Duterte must shift his priority to solving the larger problem of poverty through social and economic reforms, which are the main focus of this week’s round of talks, he said. The guerrillas have accused government troops of violating a ceasefire by occupying schools, village halls and other civilian areas and conducting illegal searches, questionings and surveillance of suspected rebel supporters. The military has denied the allegations. Founded in 1968, the rebels’ Communist Party has held peace talks with six Philippine presidents, including Duterte, whose rise to power in June sparked rebel optimism due to his searing anti-U.S. rhetoric and populist pro-poor stance. Battle setbacks, surrenders and infighting have weakened the rebel group, which is blacklisted as a terrorist organization by the United States. A confidential Philippine government assessment obtained by The Associated Press says the number of guerrillas declined to 3,800 with more than 4,500 firearms in the first half of 2016, with about 700 of the country’s 42,000 villages affected by the insurgency. At least 24 children killed when bus, truck collide in India

LUCKNOW — A truck loaded with sand collided with a school bus early Thursday, killing at least 24 young children in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, police said. At least two dozen other children were injured in the collision when the speeding truck collided head-on with the bus, said Javeed Ahmed, the state’s top police official. The children, between the ages of 3 and 12, were studying at a school in the town of Etah. Another police officer, Daljeet Chaudhry, said visibility was low due to dense fog. Ahmed said rescuers were work-

ing to free several children still trapped in the wreckage. The state’s education authorities had closed all schools in the district due to a severe cold wave, and Ahmed said authorities would check why the school had stayed open. Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted his condolences, saying: “Anguished by tragic accident in UP’s Etah. JAKARTA - Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi will attend an emergency meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Thursday in Kuala Lumpur to discuss humanitarian issues in Rakhine, Myanmar. “The foreign minister will attend the OIC emergency meeting in Kuala Lumpur on January 19. This meeting aims to discuss possible measures by the OIC in response to the situation in Rakhine,” Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesman Arrmanatha Nasir said Wednesday. After attending the OIC emergency meeting, the foreign minister will make a working visit to Myanmar between January 20 to 22, 2017, he added. The Indonesian governments main message at the meeting was to encourage OIC member countries to take constructive steps to support Myanmar in order to resolve the problems in Rakhine, the Foreign Ministrys Expert Staff for Institutional Affairs, Salman Al Farisi, said. “We will deliver a range of measures that Indonesia will present to the government of Myanmar. We expect this to be an incentive for the other OIC countries to take similar

steps, particularly in its important role of promoting inclusive development in the country,” Al Farisi said. The Indonesian government will encourage the OIC to cooperate with ASEAN in order to help and support Myanmar, he added. Foreign Minister Marsudi had promised additional aid for Myanmar to help address the humanitarian problems in Rakhine state, Al Farisi further mentioned. “On December 29, 2016 President Joko Widodo oversaw the delivery of 10 containers full of humanitarian aid from Indonesia that consisted of food, gloves and other items. On January 21, the aid will be formally handed over by the foreign minister and will officially be received by Myanmars Social Affairs Minister and Rakhines Chief Minister,” Al Farisi said. The OIC emergency meeting in Kuala Lumpur is expected to issue two documents. The first document is a joint communique that is expected to contain the various measures that can be taken to help Myanmar. Diversity can be threat to the nation says police chief BANDUNG - Diversity is not always an asset, it can also be a threat if not managed properly, according to Indonesian National Police (Polri) Chief General Tito Karnavian. The Polri chief made the comments during a public lecture at the Institute of Public Administration (IPDN) in Jatinangor, Sumedang District, West Java, on Wednesday. The country that has a high level of diversity must be managed wisely in order for that diversity to not become a major threat, he added. The diversity of the country enriches the color of the Indonesian nation; therefore it must be managed and maintained appropriately, said Karnavian. In his lecture, he suggested that human civilization has been formed by empires and kingdoms from the beginning to the current time. “Indonesia experienced a period of colonization by a western empire,” he added.

He proposed that an empire would create a strong military that can defend national territory, as well as an effective police force and intelligence service that will maintain internal order and prevent social upheaval. A powerful but corruption free bureaucratic system is also essential in order for the country to run well, he said. “We must have strong and clean politicians, the role of IPDN and the Police Academy is very important with regards to maintaining a strong police force, Akmil has a very important role,” Karnavian added. He also highlighted the role of IPDN in training future bureaucrats that can run a clean and effective government. “The role of IPDN is to train cadres on how to establish clean governments and efficient bureaucratic systems, this is really very important,” the police chief said.(ant)

President discusses diversity with Christian organizations

JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo discussed the topic of diversity and maintaining unity with two Christian organizations, the Council of Churches in Indonesian and Bishops Conference of Indonesia. He invited both groups to discuss the issue at the Presidential Palace of Jakarta, according to Secretary of State Pratikno on Wednesday. “The President asked for input from both organizations concerning the issue. They talked about multiculturalism, the education sector and religion,” Pratikno said. The Secretary of State accompanied Jokowi during the meeting with the two groups. During the discussion, the President and the Christian organizations agreed that the government needs to better promote religious values. “They asked for religion to be made a priority, as well

as for the implementation of Pancasila. Both organizations will support the establishment of a working unit for promoting Pancasila,” Pratikno said. However, Jokowi and the envoys did not discuss the issues of blasphemy and mass demonstrations during the meeting, he added. The President also said that Indonesia will always be strict in enforcing its laws in order to reduce crime. Jokowi has previously invited the leaders of two Islamic organizations, Said Aqil Siradj from Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah from Haedar Nashir, to meet with him regarding similar topics. During a lunch meeting with Siradj, they discussed issues relating to politics and ways of avoiding intolerance. The President also discussed efforts to promote social justice for the development of the nation with Nashir. CHAPECO — Slowly and steadily, Rafael Henzel will climb into the cramped space to broadcast Saturday’s friendly match for Brazilian club Chapecoense, the first since nearly the entire team was killed in an air crash almost two months ago. Only six of the 77 passengers survived — and Henzel was one of them. “The stairway at the Arena Conda is very steep, but I have extra motivation to be in that stadium again and see players wearing our shirt, the fans. It won’t be that stairway that will stop me,” Henzel told The Associated Press after his morning show on radio Oeste Capital. Henzel has worked at Chapecoense matches since 2012, and is the voice of the team from the remote, southern Brazilian city of Chapeco. After 20 days in a hospital, seven broken ribs, multiple scars — one over his right eye— and worrisome pneumonia, Henzel went back to work at the radio station just over a week ago. Now he’s making his second return — what he calls “Rafael 2.0” — in the match against Brazilian league champion Palmeiras, preparing to once again get behind the microphone at the tiny stadium. His left foot is in a cast, but that won’t stop him. “When I woke up at the crash site, I became aware of what had happened,” he said, recalling the crash. “Initially, I thought I was dreaming but then, shortly after, you start to realize that the plane had crashed.” Three Chapecoense players survived — 19 were killed — when the plane slammed into the Andes mountains as it headed to the city of Medellin to face Colombian team Atletico Nacional in the Copa Sudamericana final — the No. 2 club tournament in South America. All three hope to play again, in one fashion or another. And all three are expected for Chape’s debut on Saturday. Defender Neto, who spent more than 10
