The last time Robert De Niro laced on the gloves for the big screen he delivered a knockout as Jake LaMotta in “Raging Bull.” More than 30 years later, he was given a chance to fight again. But he wasn’t going to do it without the undisputed champion of boxing movies, Rocky himself. Raging Bull, meet Aging Bull. It’s De Niro vs. Sylvester Stallone in a geriatric battle for the aged. “It was just common sense who did it,” De Niro said. “It could have gone either way for me if he didn’t do it.” The question might have been why do it at all. Implausible at best, the tale of two 60-something former light heavyweight champions coming out of retirement to fight each other in an HBO pay-per-view event is a stretch even by Hollywood standards. It wouldn’t work as a drama like “Raging Bull’” or any of the six “Rocky” movies. But “Grudge Match” excels as comedy, with enough laugh-

out-loud moments and good cheer to put it in the early running for the feel-good movie of the holiday season. Grudgement Day anyone? “I haven’t been very lucky in comedy,” Stallone said. “But I’m taking a character that got me here so it didn’t take a lot of persuasion.” That character, of course, is Rocky Balboa, first seen in the original “Rocky” movie in 1976 and reprised in various forms five times since. The last was “Rocky Balboa” in 2006 in which the fighter comes out of retirement to take on champion Mason Dixon for the heavyweight title. The story line for that film was similar, including the HBO pay-per-view that Rocky barely loses in a brutal fight. The difference this time is “Grudge Match”

BEIJING — “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” actress Zhang Ziyi has reached an undisclosed settlement with a U.S.-based dissident news website that she sued for libel after it published reports that she was paid to have sex with Chinese government officials. Boxun News retracted its “negative and untrue” reports that began in May 2012 in an apology displayed on its Englishlanguage site on Wednesday. “These false reports about Zhang Ziyi should never have been published. As a result, Boxun News now renders its unreserved apology to Zhang Ziyi, has removed the entire series of articles about Zhang Ziyi from the Boxun News website, and issues this formal retraction,” said Boxun, whose reports regularly allege human rights violations and political scandals and which is blocked in China. The defendants initially argued their reports were protected by the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution that covers free speech. Meng had said the case was “an effort by the Chinese government (albeit by proxy) to attach and retaliate against an independent journalistic critic of its brutal and repressive practices, and to use the American judicial system as an instrument to identify dissidents for persecution,” according to a defendants’ summary.

RENO — A suicidal gunman opened fire at a Reno, Nevada, hospital campus Tuesday, killing one person, critically wounding two others and sending police on a door-to-door search within the facility amid the chaos. The wounded victims were in surgery and one of them is a doctor, the Nevada Department of Public Safety said. The gunman killed himself after the shooting, which Reno Deputy Police Chief Tom Robinson said doesn’t appear to be random.

“I wouldn’t say they were targeted, but I don’t think it was just random,” he told reporters outside the medical building on the campus of the Renown Regional Medical Center. Investigators said they were confident no one else was involved. Robinson said he didn’t know

how many shots were fired or what type of weapon was used. “I don’t even know if there were multiple weapons at this time,” he said. All three victims and the gunman suffered some kind of gunshot wound and were in the same general area on the building’s third floor, Robinson said. Police didn’t release their identities, “As far as the suspect goes, we still don’t have a solid identity yet but we are working several leads on who he is,” Robinson said. spokeswoman Gail Powell said the wounded doctor is a woman but she had no other information about the shooting at the Center for Advanced Medicine, a modern structure connected by a second-floor walkway to the main hospital and a parking structure. Robinson said there were about 100 people in the building when the shooting was reported at 2:05 p.m. Officers entered three to five minutes later and did “a systematic search, floor to floor, room to room,” Robinson said.

“On the third floor of the building they located two people down and located two people injured and evacuated the injured parties,” he said. Renown Regional Medical Center was put on lockdown as law enforcement rushed to the scene and victims were treated by doctors on the hospital campus. More than three dozen police cars, including SWAT team vehicles, surrounded the sprawling medical complex and closed off a three-block area near downtown Reno.

NEGARA - At least seven residents of Yehembang Kangin village, Mendoyo subdistrict, became the victims of stray dog suspected to have been infected by rabies, Monday (Dec 16). Five of the seven residents of Nusamara hamlet, Tegak Gede and Tibusambi, were asked to brought to Negara Hospital, Tuesday (Dec 17) in order to obtain anti-rabies vaccine (VAR) and anti-rabies serum (SAR). The Head of Jembrana Health Agency, Putu Suasta, said the five residents with high risk of being infected by rabies and having got treatment included Kadek Ayu Sri Putri Yuni, 12, from Tegak Gede; Nyoman Rena, 70, Gede Mardiana, 5, Sudiantari, 23, from Nusamara and Ketut Astini, 30, from Tibusambi. Meanwhile, the two other victims were given anti-rabies vaccine. In 2010, the Yehembang Kangin village posed the rabies outbreak area because many people were bitten. And this year it happened again, so the Health Agency took immediate measures to prevent the fall of more bite victims. Although the agency had not got the sample of the dogs so far, the anticipative efforts remained to be carried out. In terms of bite pattern, they were all the same. According to him, the seven residents were suddenly attacked by the stray dog from the area of Tibusambi up to Nusamara. So far, the stray dog had not been found and his party had been making coordination with the Livestock Agency in order to make a search as well as elimination against the stray dogs. (kmb26)

Kindled by envy, a man determined to burn Lisa Laundry Bali Post

DENPASAR - The case on the fire afflicting the Lisa Laundry on Jalan Pulau Galang Gang Perum Amerta Wisata, Denpasar, finally could be revealed by Detective Criminal Section of West Denpasar Police. Apparently, the fire at the laundry business was a deliberate action. It was committed by its own employee, I Putu Eka Alit Sedana. The suspect deliberately set fire to the laundry premises as triggered by jealousy. It started when the love affair partner of the suspect namely Ni Luh Suryaningsih who also worked there wanted to be snatched by the laundry owner, I Nyoman Dadi Sukamerta. To that end, as kindled by jealousy the suspect burned the laundry premises and carried four plastic bags of gasoline spilled into the laundry on October 30, 2013. Fortunately, the fire did not burn out the business premises because the other employees quickly put out the fire. “It was kindled by the motive of jealousy,” said the Chief of West Denpasar Police, Erwin Pratomo, Tuesday (Dec 17). Chief Erwin explained the reveal of the case was based on the report on the burning of laundry premises. Having been followed up and carried out the crime scene investigation, an irregularity was

found. Even, when a number of witnesses were examined, a witness (victim) claimed to have received a short message considered it strange. It read ‘Infidelity with your employee will make a start of your bankruptcy.’ Such short message was sent by the suspect. Well, it was the start of police’s suspicion if there was something wrong with the laundry premises. Having been investigated, the chase was conducted on the suspect. As the suspect returned home to Jembrana, police had to be patient. Afterward, police implemented a strategy by luring the suspect in order he could be back to Denpasar. “We lured the suspect with the help of his love affair partner,” he explained. On December 6, 2013, the suspect came to Denpasar and was immediately arrested by police. Furthermore, the suspect was taken to West Denpasar Police. The suspect admitted his action. It was committed because he was kindled by jealousy. “I’m jealous. My girlfriend was tried to be snatched by my boss (owner laundry). She was honest to me. Any SMS sent by her boss was definitely informed to me. Even, she also lets me know her lovingly SMS. So, I do not accept it,” admitted the suspect before the investigator. (kmb21)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Hospital in southwest China opens smog clinic BEIJING — A hospital in southwest China has opened a clinic for patients who are suffering symptoms related to smog, a doctor said Wednesday, highlighting how big a concern pollution has become for Chinese. The dedicated clinic at the Chengdu No. 7 People’s Hospital has already treated more than 100 patients since opening last week. WASHINGTON — Fewer teens are trying fake marijuana known by such names as K2 and Spice, apparently getting the message that these cheap new drugs are highly dangerous, according to the government’s annual survey on drug use. Synthetic marijuana is thought to have appeared in the U.S. in 2009, and soon after came a spike in emergency room visits, even deaths, as the drug caught on among young people. About 8 percent of high school seniors said they’ve used some type of synthetic marijuana this year, according to the report released Wednesday by the National Institutes of Health. That’s a sharp drop from the 11 percent of seniors who’d experimented with fake pot in 2012. Use of synthetic drugs among younger teens dropped as well —

The Drug Enforcement Administration banned a number of chemicals used to make synthetic marijuana in 2011, but new chemical varieties continue to appear. Earlier this year, federal health officials discovered that two new types of fake pot had sickened more than 200 people in

KARANGASEM - A fairly large flamboyant tree suddenly collapsed in front of petrol station at Yeh Malet, Manggis, Karangasem, Tuesday (Dec 17). The tree toppled over two vehicles namely a passing truck and mini bus. Both vehicles were wrecked at the muzzle and their front windshield shattered. However, no casualties or injuries were reported. The tree precisely toppled over the vehicle’s muzzle, so it also hit the truck with license plate DK 9470

In the capital Juba, gunfire still rang out into the early hours of Wednesday morning, an AFP reporter said. “There are people walking in the city this morning, but it would be premature to say things are back to normal,” he said. The government ordered Juba airport to re-open, although regional airlines said they were waiting for security guaranties before allowing flights bound for Juba to take off. “We are waiting for confirmation that the airport is safe,” a Kenya Airways official said. “For the moment it is 50-50”. Honda willing to quit MotoGP over ECU rules

Honda would almost certainly quit MotoGP if control ECUs were made mandatory, HRC team principal Shuhei Nakamoto has warned. The series mandated the use of spec ECUs and dataloggers from the start of next year’s championship, although factory outfits have an opt-out clause provided they agree to run on 20, rather than 24, litres of fuel. Discussions about making control ECUs mandatory for every entrant from 2017 are ongoing, as series rights holder Dorna seeks to reduce costs and make it easier for new manufacturers to enter the championship. Honda has warned however that there would be little incentive for it to remain in MotoGP should it not be free to develop its own electronics. “Should MotoGP go for a control ECU, it’s 99 per cent sure Honda will leave,” Nakamoto told Gazzetta dello Sport. Nakamoto had previously said in a Motosprint interview that technology restrictions would

NAPLES, Italy — Former Juventus executive Luciano Moggi has had his jail sentence in the 2006 Italian match-fixing scandal reduced to 28 months on appeal. Moggi was sentenced to 5 years and 4 months in the initial ruling in the case. The reduction came because the statute of limitations for one of the charges — sports fraud — expired. Former referee designator Pierluigi Pairetto and former Italian football federation vice president Innocenzo Mazzini were each sentenced to two years, while former referees Massimo De Santis and Paolo Bertini got 12 and 10 months, respectively. A judge in Naples ordered a retrial for Paolo Bergamo, another former referee designator. Fiorentina owners Andrea and Diego Della Valle and Lazio president Claudio Lotito were among those cleared. Moggi and the others have not started serving their sentences yet, and likely won’t until the appeals process is finished. Moggi’s lawyer Maurilio Prioreschi said they would file another appeal to the Court of Cassation, Italy’s top criminal court and the final level of justice. Antonio Giraudo, another former Juventus executive, had his sentence reduced a year ago from 36 to 20 months in a fast-track appeal. At the heart of the scandal, known as Calciopoli, were allegations that Moggi and Giraudo created a network of contacts with Italian football federation officials to influence refereeing assignments and arrange for key players in other teams to be booked ahead of matches with the Turin club. In 2011, the Italian football federation extended the five-year bans from the sport for Moggi and Giraudo to life terms. Both men deny wrongdoing. Juventus was stripped of the 2005 and 2006 Serie A titles for its role in the scandal, and the club was relegated to Serie B for a season.

MIAMI - Retired soccer star David Beckham and Major League Soccer (MLS) took a step toward fielding a new Miami team as local officials on Tuesday unanimously approved on-going efforts to find a suitable stadium location. The vote by Miami-Dade county commissioners was the first test of political support for Beckham’s soccer venture in Miami. The decision gave county officials authority to identify stadium sites and negotiate construction contracts with developers. MLS, the top U.S. professional soccer league, has stressed the importance of having a final stadium deal, along with a business plan, before it will approve a new team. “We can’t go to Miami without the right stadium solution,” MLS Commissioner Don Garber said during his state of the league address ahead of the MLS Cup final in Kansas City in early December. “David understands that, the city understands that, that is an indisputable fact,” he said. The former England team captain, who also played for the Los Angeles Galaxy, retired as a player in May but is seeking to exercise a $25 million option in his MLS contract to start a new franchise. County officials say Beckham is interested in an urban setting near Miami’s downtown, possibly on publicly owned land next to the port of Miami’s cruise ship terminals, hoping the stadium would become part of Miami’s tourism landscape. Beckham’s group is not looking for public financing, but may need to negotiate site plans with

LONDON - Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho was forced to recount a familiar tale as he bemoaned his team’s latest failure to turn chances into goals after their 2-1 extra-time defeat by Sunderland in the League Cup on Tuesday. “The quality of football we produced is amazing. We never lost a match because we didn’t play or that the opponent was stronger, it’s just we don’t kill opponents and we give them life,” Mourinho told Sky Sports after his team were knocked out in the quarter-finals. “Every opponent knows they can score a goal (against us). We had fantastic chances to score and didn’t score.” While Chelsea sit third in the Premier League and are safely through to the knockout stages in the Champions League, surprise recent results have forced the Mourinho on to the defensive about his team’s chances of silverware. Two defeats and a draw in their last seven Premier League matches as well as a double reverse against Swiss side Basel in Europe have turned the focus on the club’s mis-firing strikers, Fernando Torres, Demba Ba and Samuel Eto’o. The trio have managed five league goals between them all season. Eto’o was handed the responsibility for leading the line against Sunderland and wasted an excellent chance to double the lead in the second half when he side-footed wide with only the keeper to beat.
