MERIGNAC - In a dank flat in southwestern France, 23year-old Nasir stares at a living room wall bare except for a list of emergency numbers and contemplates life for his asylumseeking family outside the migrant camp in Calais that had become home. Nasir volunteered his family for resettlement days before France is expected to begin dismantling the violence-ridden camp in Calais known as the “Jungle”, where disease is rife and traffickers prey on individuals desperate to reach Britain. The two-storey apartment block in Merignac, a grey suburb on the outskirts of Bordeaux, is one of about 160 so-called reception centres where President Francois Hollande’s Socialist government plans to re-house temporarily the
Jungle’s dwellers. There are few signs of the social workers Nasir is told will visit frequently, but Merignac’s town hall has given the family food vouchers worth 80 euros for the week. “We feel good. It looks like someone cares a little bit about us,” Nasir said in broken English. “We’ll watch TV here. We’ll rest!” Not everyone supports President Francois Hollande’s plans for the Jungle’s closure. Many of
the nearly 10,000 migrants aid agencies estimate are holed up in the camp still target Britain, and a group of charities this week sought a court injunction to block the camp’s demolition. Amid a fiery debate on immigration and border controls ahead of a presidential election next year, opponents have turned up the heat on Hollande’s immigration policy. Hollande has been at pains to find a solution to the Jungle, which has become a symbol of the European Union’s struggle to stem the inflow of migrants as its memberstates bicker over who should take responsibility. Anti-immigrant sentiment is on the rise in France, reflected in the
growing popularity of the far-right National Front. Gunshots have been fired at two planned reception centres and one mayor wanted to hold a local referendum on whether to accept his town’s quota of migrants, exposing the resistance in parts of the country to Hollande’s plans for the Calais migrants.
CAUTIOUS WELCOME In Merignac, run by a left-wing mayor, residents living near the social housing block that once housed local teachers voiced wary sympathy for the resettled migrants. “We’ve lost all perspective. I’m not bothered as long as they don’t mess things up for us here,” said bar owner Pascal Thieblemont.
Merignac mayor Alain Anziani acknowledged local anxieties. He said the 32 places his municipality was making available would not be located at a single site. “We don’t want to create a ghetto,” said Anziani, adding some residents had expressed concern their housing needs would come second to the migrants. Assistant Deputy to Southeast Asia Market Development for the Ministry of Tourism, Rizki Handayani, said the current trend is to see visitors spending between USD 5,000 and 6,000 during their visit to Indonesia and the many world class olf course found here. Five years ago, golf tourism in Indonesia only drew about 900 foreign travelers a year. Currently, it has increased to about 3,000 people per year. “By international standadrs, the cost of playing golf in Indonesia is quite cheap. That’s why we boost golf tourism in Indonesia” said Rizki. Minister of Tourism, Arief Yahya, stated that sports events and sports tourism are closely related. Chief of the Denpasar Prosecutor’s Office, Erna Noormawati Widodo Putri, said that after the second handover, the prosecutor is designated to finalize the indictment plan. She would soon complete this indictment, if necessary, within 10 days. Her agency has been able to finalize to be further submitted to the Denpasar District Court. “We are targeting the indictment could be accomplished within ten days and the suspects can be immediately transferred to the court. However, pursuant to the existing SOP there has been provision for this kind of case where detention of the suspects can be made up to 30 days before being transferred to the court,” affirmed Erna. Regarding the arrest, the two suspects are temporarily detained for the next 20 days until the indictment can be completed. In accordance with Criminal Code, the suspects
can be detained for up to 30 days or a longer period to the High Court up to 140 days if the Denpasar Court is difficult to prove. Based on procedures, the court may extend the detention period of the suspects for up to 180 days or six months for the trial process. However, her institution with the prosecutor will judge the case so that the trial will only last for four months. “We estimate the trial will be held after the prosecutor and the court appointed the judges to prosecute, so that the trial of this case could be possibly commenced next two weeks,” she added. As observation of Bali Post, the two suspects were accompanied by their respective legal counsel. David with new look or without dreadlocks, was accompanied by Haposan Sihombing. This legal counsel graduated from the Udayana University said that in the second phase David answered the questions where at the time of incident last August 17 he did not think to cause death. “Essentially, David regretted and has apologized to victim’s family through a letter,”
said Haposan. He said that the letter was written bilingually, namely in English and Indonesian. “Essentially, our client (David—Ed) already apologized to the victim’s family for the deeds having been committed. He did not expect if his actions could end victim’s life,” explained Haposan. According to Haposan, the letter has been given to the victim’s family through the hamlet chief at Jimbaran. He has now changed his appearance and is no longer with dreadlocks. “He claimed to like the new hair style,” continued Haposan. In the meantime, Sara through her legal counsel, Erwin Siregar, even revealed the opposite. She insisted on claiming not guilty. Sara said that she has been examined four times at the Denpasar Police. When examined by the prosecutors, Sarah pleaded not to be guilty in the case, but she understood about the allegation charged by the prosecutors during questioning. That pilot in the cockpit may someday be a robot
MANASSAS — From the outside, the single-engine Cessna Caravan that took off from a small airport here on Monday looked unremarkable. But inside the cockpit, in the right seat, a robot with spindly metal tubes and rods for arms and legs and a claw hand grasping the throttle, was doing the flying. In left seat, a human pilot tapped commands to his mute colleague using an electronic tablet. The demonstration was part of a government and industry collaboration that is attempting to replace the second human pilot in two-person flight crews with robot co-pilots that never tire, get bored, feel stressed out or become distracted. The program’s leaders even envision a day when planes and helicopters, large and small, will fly people and cargo without any human pilot on board. Personal robot planes may become a common mode of travel. Consider it the aviation equivalent of the selfdriving car. The program, known as Aircrew Labor In-Cockpit Automation System or ALIAS, is funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and run by Aurora Flight Sciences, a private contractor. With both the military and airlines struggling with shortages of trained pilots, defense officials say they see an advantage to reducing the number of pilots required to fly large planes or helicopters while at the same time making operations safer and more efficient by having a robot step in to pick up the mundane tasks of flying. The idea is to have the robot augment the human pilot by taking over a lot of the workload, thus freeing the human pilot — especially in emergencies and demanding situations — to think
strategically. “It’s really about a spectrum of increasing autonomy and how humans and robots work together so that each can be doing the thing that its best at,” said John Langford, Aurora’s chairman and CEO. Sophisticated computers flying planes aren’t new. In today’s airliners, the autopilot is on nearly the entire time the plane is in the air. Airline pilots do most of their flying for brief minutes during takeoffs and landings, and even those critical phases of flight could be handled by the autopilot. But the ALIAS robot goes steps further. For example, an array of cameras allows the robot to see all the cockpit instruments and read the gauges. It can recognize whether switches are in the on or off position, and can flip them to the desired position. And it learns not only from its experience flying the plane, but also from the entire history of flight in that type of plane. The robot “can do everything a human can do” except look out the window, Langford said. But give the program time and maybe the robot can be adapted to do that too, he said. In other ways, the robot is better than the human pilot, reacting faster and with knowledge instantaneously available, able to call up every emergency checklist for a possible situation, officials said. Medical waste management costly
Hospitals face difficulties to manage waste
DENPASAR - Hospitals in Bali face difficulties in processing their medical waste. In addition to using the WWTP for liquid medical waste treatment, clinics or health centers and hospitals also use septic tanks. In the meantime, the solid medical waste treatment uses incinerator. However, the operation of incinerator needs permission from the Ministry of Environment and environmental impact analysis (EIA) test. On that account, medical waste treatment is not cheap. This makes hospitals and health care facilities get difficulties in managing their waste. Ultimately, they decide to use the services of third parties in the waste management. Kuntjoro Adi Purjanto, Chairman of the Indonesia Hospital Association (PERSI) explained that the regulation on the waste treatment has been available, both issued by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Environment and Forestry. According to him, if the problem of medical waste is faced together, it will not become difficult. “We have to sit together and think of medical waste as a shared responsibility. Waste issue will not become a burden and constraints, but if the waste problem is not considered as a shared responsibility it becomes difficult. To that end, it requires a strategic alliance to overcome this problem,” he said. He added that some hospitals coalesced in the PERSI members indeed process their medical waste
through the services of a third party and some others manage by themselves. However, most medical waste management is done independently. “Not all of the third parties qualify for the requirements of the medical waste processing,” he said. In the meantime, the application for operating permit to Ministry of Environment and Forestry is not easy. Hospitals with primary tasks to serve the public health then have increasing burden when addressing waste problem. “In issuing permit, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry must also refer to the standards and guidelines,” he explained. Sometimes the expensive waste management is not included in the hospital budgeting. On that account, he considered it necessary to have competent people in the field of hospital waste management from the upstream to downstream, including the planning. “To that end, there are no fields claiming no costs, but all need costs,” he said. Considering there are hospitals owned by central government and local government, when they are unable to finance their activities, the hospital owners are required to finance such activities. Payment claims issued by the health insurance agency have not included the cost of waste processing. Thus, the differences which have not been covered by the hospitals should be covered by local government or hospital owners. (may)

Leading up to the full moon of the fourth month of the Balinese calendar (October), a variety of grandiose rituals were held at several customary villages in Karangasem. In the older villages of Karangasem in particular, a sacred dance dedicated to God, known as the Rejang dance is performed with beauty and grace in the temples. The people of Karamgasem’s customary villages eagerly await the performance of the rejang dance known for is beauty. Throughout the month of October, rituals such as the usaba gumang at Bugbug customary village and aci kapat at Timbrah customary village, held on Sunday (Oct. 16) both featured the Rejang Dance. Typically, before theses rituals, the rejang dance was performed as part of the usaba dangsil in old villages like Bungaya customary village (combination of rejang dance owned by Asak and Bungaya) as well as the ritual at Tengah hamlet, Tihingan (Bebandem subdistrict) and at Jasri (Karangasem subdistrict). Sometimes, the rejang dance is performed in collaboratin with other customary villages, like during the usaba dangsil 2016 during which the villages of Bungaya and Asak performed together at the Bungaya Hall to welcome the arrival of the deities. Secretary of the usaba dangsil ritual committee, I Gede Krisna Adi Widana, explained that the implementation of this great ritual in Karangasem had neer been so grandioase in the known history of the region. “It is really a rare and sacred moment”, he said.
Rejang dancer from different customary villages have different costumes and makeup styles. The most fundamental differences lie in the style of headdress worn and music played during the ceremony. Bungaya customary village, for instance, accompanies its rejang dance with selonding gamelan music, while Timbrah uses gong gamelan music while the movements of the dance are quite similar in both villages. Rejang dancers play special role in both of these customary villages. Timbrah community leader Nengah Sukada, has said that of the 12 rejang dancers there are four leaders with different titles: Dedari Agung, Dedari Suci, Dedari Kendran and Dedari Tohok. In Timbrah girls who have no physical disabilities are named as rejang dancers when they are junior high school and they are obliged to pay devotional service as a rejang dancer. After the collapse of yellow bridge, Students get to school by boat SEMARAPURA - The collapse of the yellow bridge that connects Ceningan to Lembongan on Sunday (Oct16) has meant that people from both of these area of Nusa Penisa are forced to make the crossing by boat. On Monday (Oct.17), many residents made the crossing by sampan boat and students from Ceningan also went to school in Lembongan by boat. After investigating the scene of the collapsed bridge, Regent of Klungkung, I Nyoman Suwirta, held a meeting in a makeshift office in one of SMA Wisata Darma High School’s classrooms. The meeting was atttended by district police chief and commander of the 1610 Klungkung military district, headman of Lembongan, chief of customary village and other related agencies. SAR Bali personel also went to the scene of the collapsed bridge by boat on Monday and local residents booed as the officers arrived on the scene. Ceningan resident Nyoman Darmawan expalined that people felt frustrated that the officers only arrived well after the fact. “Maybe, residents are annoyed that at the time of the incident no officers were to be seen so all evacuation efforts were conducted by local residents themsleves”, he said. Darmawan also questioned Governeor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika’s sincerity in showing up at the scene, because the Governor had promised to support the people of Nusa Penida. The people of Nusa Penida supported Governor Pastika during the elections so he is hopoing that the Gvoenrment of Bali will build a new permanent bridge but one that is not too wide. ”We do not want this bridge to be repaired. Local people are traumatized”, he said. Headman of Lembongan, Ketut Gede Arjaya expressed a similar opinion about the desire to have a new bridge built as soon as possible, because the communities of Ceningan and Lembongan rely on this crossing everyday. “Without this bridge, tourism, education and health services in Lembongan and Ceningan are done for” he said, adding that the yellow bridge that was built in 1994 has become a tourism icon for Nusa Penida. After the incident, chief of Lembongan customary village, Made Sukadana, announced that he will be taking energetic or spiritual measures to deal with the collapse of the bridge. Under Australia’s tough immigration policy, asylum seekers intercepted trying to reach the country by boat are sent for processing at a camp in Nauru or to Manus Island in Papua New Guinea (PNG) and are not eligible for resettlement in Australia. Many asylum seekers on Nauru are being driven to attempt suicide to escape the prison-like conditions they face in indefinite detention, Amnesty alleged in a detailed report. “I reject that claim totally. It is absolutely false,” Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull told Australian Broadcasting Corp radio of the torture claim. “The Australian government’s commitment is compassionate and strong.” The detention was a “systematic regime of neglect and cruelty,” said Amnesty, adding that its findings were based on both desk research and field work in Nauru between July and October. “The conditions on Nauru - refugees’ severe mental anguish, the intentional nature of the system, and the fact that the goal of offshore processing is to intimidate or coerce people to achieve a specific outcome - amounts to torture,” it added. The Nauru government did not respond directly to the Amnesty report but criticised an ABC TV story that made similar allegations and quoted children on Nauru, where refugees are mainly from Iran and Afghanistan. “It was clear these children were coached,” the government said in a statement, calling the ABC report “biased political propaganda and lies”, and “an insult to the people of Nauru”. Almost 60 people, or about 15 percent of the 410 men, women and children on the island, reported they had either attempted suicide or had thoughts about harming themselves, Amnesty said. Despite failures, North Korea could field missile next year - U.S. expert WASHINGTON - In spite of the apparent failure of another North Korean missile test at the weekend, the country’s aggressive testing schedule could see its Musudan intermediate ballistic missile entering operational service sometime next year - much sooner than expected, a leading U.S. expert said on Monday. The U.S. military said on Saturday it had detected a failed launch of a Musudan, the latest in a series in violation of United Nations resolutions. The U.S. Strategic Command said the missile failed in a launch near North Korea’s northwestern city of Kusong. South Korea’s military said the missile failed immediately after launch, but neither it nor the Pentagon suggested reasons. The Musudan has range of some
3,000 km (1,860 miles), posing a threat to South Korea and Japan, and possibly the U.S. territory of Guam. Pyongyang claims that it has succeeded in miniaturizing a nuclear warhead that can be mounted on a missile, but this have never been independently verified. John Schilling, an aerospace engineer specializing in rocket propulsion, said it was noteworthy that North Korea had launched the missile from its west coast, rather than from its purpose-built test facility. “Moving to a roadside near Kusong is like taking the training wheels off the bicycle, seeing if you really have mastered something new,” he wrote on the 38 North website that monitors North Korea. TOKYO - The dollar took a breather from its recent gains on Tuesday, edging away from seven-month highs against a currency basket as investors took stock of U.S. interest rate expectations in coming months. The dollar index, which tracks the greenback against six major rivals, slipped 0.2 percent to 97.711, after rising as high as 98.169 in the previous session, its highest since March 10. Against the yen, the dollar was down slightly on the day at 103.89. “Rangebound trading continues, with the 104 level heavy for the dollar-yen,” said Kaneo Ogino, director at foreign exchange research firm Global-info Co in Tokyo. “It’s just short-term guys, playing in the market.” U.S. interest rates remain a key focus of the markets, he said, with a December rate hike still anticipated. However, a Fed rate increase this year is still far from a done deal. Fed Vice Chairman Stanley Fischer said on Monday that economic stability could be threatened by low interest rates, but it was “not that simple” for the Fed to hike. However, Boston Fed President Eric Rosengren told Reuters the current levels of jobs and inflation support the case for a rate increase soon. A suggestion by Fed Chair Janet Yellen on Friday that the central bank may allow inflation to exceed its 2 percent target pushed U.S. bond yields to four-month highs and gave the dollar a lift. The Bank of Japan will meet later this month and issue fresh quarterly growth and inflation forecasts at the end of its Oct. 31Nov. 1 meeting, but it is seen holding off on expanding stimulus after having just revamped its policy framework. Perhaps we will need a bit more time.” All 28 EU governments now back the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), which would be the bloc’s first trade accord with a G7 country.

China Sept new yuan loans surge to 1.22 trillion yuan, well above forecasts
BEIJING - Chinese banks extended 1.22 trillion yuan ($181 billion) in new loans in September, well above expectations and capping a record nine-month lending spree despite growing concerns about the risks from the country’s ballooning debt. Much of the loan growth in recent months has been driven by a rapid rise in home mortgages, as China’s sizzling housing market drives a buying frenzy that authorities are now trying to clamp down on without triggering a price collapse. China’s credit growth has been “very fast” by global standards, and without a comprehensive strategy to tackle the debt overhang there is a growing risk it will have a banking crisis or sharply slower growth or both, the International Monetary Fund said in a working paper last week. Analysts polled by Reuters had expected new lending to increase modestly to 1 trillion yuan in September, after more than doubling in August to 948.7 billion yuan.
Loans over the first nine months of the year were a record 10.16 trillion yuan ($1.51 trillion), according to central bank data on Tuesday. In September alone, new housing loans to individuals totalled 475.9 billion yuan, some 76 percent higher than the same period last year, Ruan Jianhong, a central bank official said in a news release. Personal mortgages accounted for 39 percent of all new lending last month, based on Reuters calculations using central bank data. In a further sign that authorities are keeping the system awash with money to support economic growth, broad M2 money supply grew 11.5 percent in September from a year earlier, slightly below forecasts but up from August’s 11.4 percent rise.
Outstanding yuan loans grew 13 percent by end-September on an annual basis. Outstanding loans had been forecast to rise 12.9 percent, while money supply was seen up 11.6 percent. China’s debt has soared to 250 percent of GDP and the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) warned in September that a banking crisis was looming in the next three years. “Credit booms, even stealth mini ones, have a stair-step effect on the credit-to-GDP ratio, which at 250 percent China can ill afford,” Tim Condon, ING’s chief Asia economist, wrote in a recent note. However, Condon believes the recent credit boom driven by lending for government debt swaps has already peaked. For similar reasons, Capital Economics also believes credit growth has been easing in recent months, while acknowledging that it remains rapid compared with a few years ago. (rtr)

NORTH KAYONG - The North Kayong District of West Kalimantan has great beach tourism potential that could be developed, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has said. “I see that North Koyang has beach tourism potential,” the president said after inaugurating the North Kayong Grand Mosque in North Kayong District, West Kalimantan, on Saturday. “There needs to be some realignment in certain places so that the potential beaches could be developed,” he said. “I think we need arrangement at some points. I saw it last night, I will see again perhaps with regard to the needs for infrastructure. It must be focused on its airport that I have not seen yet,” he added. Regarding seaports, Jokowi said he has not yet seen the facility.
“I should see it before I comment on it. Inter-island connectivity and among islands to the provincial cities is important,” he said. He said that because infrastructure is important, and the government built it from the west to the east and from the north to the south. “For example, in Natuna there is an airport whose runway is also long. In the coming three days, we will open the airport in the Miangas Island which is closest to the northern Philippines. In the east, we will open the airport in Yahukimo,” he said. JAKARTA - Now into its second day, the Trade Expo Indonesia event has generated a total of US$186.69 million worth of transactions in the form of trade contracts. “Transactions worth US$178.7 million were signed on the first day while US$7.99 million worth of deals were signed on the second day,” informed the Trade Ministrys Head of National Export Development Arlinda in Jakarta, on Thursday. On the second day of the Expo, the buying mission contract signing was dominated by importers of food and beverage products from Australia. The signings were witnessed by Suprapto Martosetomo, Indonesias Ambassador to South Africa as well as the Kingdom of Lesotho, the Kingdom of Swaziland and the Republic of Botswana. The deals were signed by six importers from three countries, including Nigeria, Australia and South Africa, and eight local export businesses. In the pharmaceutical sector, Nigerias Jeijosh Pharma signed a deal with PT. Phapros, while Sony Trading Pty. Ltd signed a deal with PT. Mayora Indah. In the food and beverage products sector, PT. Pondan Pangan Makmur and PT. Sarimunik Mandiri signed a deal with Eastern Cross Trading Pty. Ltd and CV. Intrafood, while Hean Corporation and PT. Dua Kelinci signed a partnership in the same sector. Grein Australia Pty Ltd and PT. Sayap Mas Utama signed a deal for food and beverage products as well as consumer goods. Lastly, Wemco Investment & Trading Ltd and PT. KMI Wire and cable Tbk. signed a contract for wire products. Batik artisans attend financial workshop in Cirebon
CIREBON - The Economic Creative Agency (Bekraf) on Friday held a financial workshop for batik artisans in Cirebon, West Java, to train them on how to make their products more saleable and how to access capital. The theme of the workshop was “Capacity Building Creative Business Communities”.
Sugeng Santoso, access non-banking director of Bekraf, said the workshop suggested sources the artisans could approach for capital, such as non-bank financial institutions (NBFIs). “The participants are local artists from Cirebon region, such as Cirebon, Indramayu, Kuningan and Majalengka,” he said.
“Through this workshop, Bekraf provided opportunities for start-ups to access capital sources such as NBFIs,” he added. He said the capital can be procured from NBFIs actors creative economy, a venture capital firm, and Revolving Fund Management Institution Cooperatives, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (LPDB-KUMKM).
Sugeng said Bekraf has signed an agreement with PBMT Ventura through the Access Non-Banking Directorate, Deputy II Capital Access Bekraf. GREEN BAY - Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump on Monday cited studies he said showed rampant voter fraud, saying the Nov. 8 election was “rigged” against him even as Republican lawyers called his allegations unfounded. Trump, a New York businessman making his first run for public office, has sought to raise fears of a flawed election as he has fallen in opinion polls against Democrat Hillary Clinton. “They even want to try to rig the election at the polling place,” Trump told a rally in Green Bay, Wisconsin. “So many cities are corrupt and voter fraud is very, very common.” Trump cited Pew Trusts research from 2012 that called for updates to the voter registration system because about 24 million registrations were inaccurate. Banned Kyrgios could quit without proper support - Cash MELBOURNE - Australia’s tempestuous talent Nick Kyrgios has the potential to be a future grand slam champion but could just as easily be lost to the sport if he fails to get the support he needs, according to former Wimbledon champion Pat Cash. The 21-year-old was suspended for eight weeks by the ATP on Monday following his second round exit at the Shanghai Masters where he clashed with fans, the chair umpire and walked off the court midway through a point against Mischa Zverev. The ban can be reduced to three weeks if he sees a sports psychologist, which Kyrgios had committed to, according to Australia’s tennis association. “I wouldn’t be surprised (if he quit) but hopefully that’s not the case,” Cash told local radio station 3AW. “Anybody’s got the opportunity to walk away but if it’s not good for his health then I think he should do that. “But with some good things in place for his health and wellbeing, and a revised schedule ... he can go out there and enjoy his tennis, which is what we want to see.” Kyrgios posted a lengthy apology online after his Shanghai meltdown, which came only days after he won the Japan Open, the third and biggest title of his career. zero interceptions -- second-most all-time. “It’s good to be 5-1. I think we’re in a decent place,” Brady said. “Just gotta string these games together -- there’s a ton of football left.” Brady missed the first four games of the season serving a suspension imposed by the NFL after it discovered underinflated footballs were used in the Patriots’ 45-7 rout of the Indianapolis Colts in the January 2015 AFC championship game. Hearing chants of “Brady, Brady, Brady” in his 2016 home debut, Brady was 29 of 35 for 376 yards, throwing two touchdown passes to running back James White and one to Rob Gronkowski.
Brady, who went over the 5,000completion mark, was sacked three times but didn’t make a serious mistake -- and the offense got a boost from two major contributions from the defense to come from behind to win. In improving to 49-1 at home against AFC opponents with Brady at the helm since 2006, the Patriots scored 15 points in 4:07 in the third quarter to take control. Neymar to sign contract extension with Barcelona until 2021
MADRID — Neymar will sign a three-year contract extension with Barcelona on Friday, a deal that will keep the Brazil forward with the Spanish club until 2021. Barcelona and Neymar had made the announcement of the agreement in July. The previous contract was to end in 2018. The new deal will run through June 2021, Barcelona said Monday. The club’s announcement in July ended speculation that Neymar was unhappy in Spain and was looking to move to another club. Paris SaintGermain was among the clubs reportedly trying to sign him. At the time, the club said the contract’s buyout clause would be fixed at 200 million euros (around $220 million) for the first year of the new contract, 222 million euros for the second, and 250 million euros for the final three years. The buyout clauses reportedly match the ones on Lionel

Banned Kyrgios could quit without proper support - Cash MELBOURNE - Australia’s tempestuous talent Nick Kyrgios has the potential to be a future grand slam champion but could just as easily be lost to the sport if he fails to get the support he needs, according to former Wimbledon champion Pat Cash. The 21-year-old was suspended for eight weeks by the ATP on Monday following his second round exit at the Shanghai Masters where he clashed with fans, the chair umpire and walked off the court midway through a point against Mischa Zverev. The ban can be reduced to three weeks if he sees a sports psychologist, which Kyrgios had committed to, according to Australia’s tennis association. “I wouldn’t be surprised (if he quit) but hopefully that’s not the case,” Cash told local radio station 3AW. “Anybody’s got the opportunity to walk away but if it’s not good for his health then I think he should do that. “But with some good things in place for his health and wellbeing, and a revised schedule ... he can go out there and enjoy his tennis, which is what we want to see.” Kyrgios posted a lengthy apology online after his Shanghai meltdown, which came only days after he won the Japan Open, the third and biggest title of his career. The 51-year-old Cash, a notable hothead during the early part of his career, said Kyrgios was “flat and exhausted” when he arrived in Shanghai and should never have played the tournament. He questioned the advice the Canberra native was receiving on tour and claimed Tennis Australia (TA) had failed to provide young players with the mental support to deal with the grind of the professional circuit. “Mental health and understanding of where you are as a junior should be as mandatory as hitting forehands and doing stretching before and after a practice session,” he said. “I’ve talked to Tennis Australia about it and nothing has been done.” TA dismissed Cash’s criticism as “incorrect,” saying sports psychologists were available for players in every state. Iraq launches Mosul offensive to drive out Islamic State
EAST OF MOSUL - Iraqi government forces launched a U.S.-backed offensive on Monday to drive Islamic State from the northern city of Mosul, a high-stakes battle to retake the militants’ last major stronghold in the country. Two years after the jihadists seized the city of 1.5 million people and declared a caliphate from there encompassing tracts of Iraq and Syria, a force of some 30,000 Iraqi and Kurdish Peshmerga forces and Sunni tribal fighters began to advance. Trump sharpens ‘rigged’ election allegations disputed by Republican lawyers
GREEN BAY - Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump on Monday cited studies he said showed rampant voter fraud, saying the Nov. 8 election was “rigged” against him even as Republican lawyers called his allegations unfounded. Trump, a New York businessman making his first run for public office, has sought to raise fears of a flawed election as he has fallen in opinion polls against Democrat Hillary Clinton. “They even want to try to rig the election at the polling place,” Trump told a rally in Green Bay, Wisconsin. “So many cities are corrupt and voter fraud is very, very common.” Trump cited Pew Trusts research from 2012 that called for updates to the voter registration system because about 24 million registrations were inaccurate. He also referred to a 2014 article by two political scientists in the Washington Post that said noncitizens who voted could have accounted for Democratic victories in a few close elections in 2008, although the authors acknowledged the sample size of their study was small. TOKYO - The dollar took a breather from its recent gains on Tuesday, edging away from seven-month highs against a currency basket as investors took stock of U.S. interest rate expectations in coming months. The dollar index, which tracks the greenback against six major rivals, slipped 0.2 percent to 97.711, after rising as high as 98.169 in the previous session, its highest since March 10. Fed Vice Chairman Stanley Fischer said on Monday that economic stability could be threatened by low interest rates, but it was “not that simple” for the Fed to hike. However, Boston Fed President Eric Rosengren told Reuters the current levels of jobs and inflation support the case for a rate increase soon. A suggestion by Fed Chair Janet Yellen on Friday that the central bank may allow inflation to exceed its 2 percent target pushed U.S. bond yields to four-month highs and gave the dollar a lift. China Sept new yuan loans surge to 1.22 trillion yuan, well above forecasts
BEIJING - Chinese banks extended 1.22 trillion yuan ($181 billion) in new loans in September, well above expectations and capping a record nine-month lending spree despite growing concerns about the risks from the country’s ballooning debt. Much of the loan growth in recent months has been driven by a rapid rise in home mortgages, as China’s sizzling housing market drives a buying frenzy that authorities are now trying to clamp down on without triggering a price collapse. China’s credit growth has been “very fast” by global standards, and without a comprehensive strategy to tackle the debt overhang there is a growing risk it will have a banking crisis or sharply slower growth or both, the International Monetary Fund said in a working paper last week. Analysts polled by Reuters had expected new lending to increase modestly to 1 trillion yuan in September, after more than doubling in August to 948.7 billion yuan.
Loans over the first nine months of the year were a record 10.16 trillion yuan ($1.51 trillion), according to central bank data on Tuesday. In September alone, new housing loans to individuals totalled 475.9 billion yuan, some 76 percent higher than the same period last year, Ruan Jianhong, a central bank official said in a news release. Personal mortgages accounted for 39 percent of all new lending last month, based on Reuters calculations using central bank data. In a further sign that authorities are keeping the system awash with money to support economic growth, broad M2 money supply grew 11.5 percent in September from a year earlier, slightly below forecasts but up from August’s 11.4 percent rise.
Outstanding yuan loans grew 13 percent by end-September on an annual basis. Outstanding loans had been forecast to rise 12.9 percent, while money supply was seen up 11.6 percent. China’s debt has soared to 250 percent of GDP and the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) warned in September that a banking crisis was looming in the next three years. “Credit booms, even stealth mini ones, have a stair-step effect on the credit-to-GDP ratio, which at 250 percent China can ill afford,” Tim Condon, ING’s chief Asia economist, wrote in a recent note. However, Condon believes the recent credit boom driven by lending for government debt swaps has already peaked. For similar reasons, Capital Economics also believes credit growth has been easing in recent months, while acknowledging that it remains rapid compared with a few years ago. (rtr)

NORTH KAYONG - The North Kayong District of West Kalimantan has great beach tourism potential that could be developed, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has said. “I see that North Koyang has beach tourism potential,” the president said after inaugurating the North Kayong Grand Mosque in North Kayong District, West Kalimantan, on Saturday. “There needs to be some realignment in certain places so that the potential beaches could be developed,” he said. “I think we need arrangement at some points. I saw it last night, I will see again perhaps with regard to the needs for infrastructure. It must be focused on its airport that I have not seen yet,” he added. Regarding seaports, Jokowi said he has not yet seen the facility.
“I should see it before I comment on it. Inter-island connectivity and among islands to the provincial cities is important,” he said. He said that because infrastructure is important, and the government built it from the west to the east and from the north to the south. “For example, in Natuna there is an airport whose runway is also long. In the coming three days, we will open the airport in the Miangas Island which is closest to the northern Philippines. In the east, we will open the airport in Yahukimo,” he said. JAKARTA - Now into its second day, the Trade Expo Indonesia event has generated a total of US$186.69 million worth of transactions in the form of trade contracts. “Transactions worth US$178.7 million were signed on the first day while US$7.99 million worth of deals were signed on the second day,” informed the Trade Ministrys Head of National Export Development Arlinda in Jakarta, on Thursday. On the second day of the Expo, the buying mission contract signing was dominated by importers of food and beverage products from Australia. The signings were witnessed by Suprapto Martosetomo, Indonesias Ambassador to South Africa as well as the Kingdom of Lesotho, the Kingdom of Swaziland and the Republic of Botswana. The deals were signed by six importers from three countries, including Nigeria, Australia and South Africa, and eight local export businesses. In the pharmaceutical sector, Nigerias Jeijosh Pharma signed a deal with PT. Phapros, while Sony Trading Pty. Ltd signed a deal with PT. Mayora Indah. In the food and beverage products sector, PT. Pondan Pangan Makmur and PT. Sarimunik Mandiri signed a deal with Eastern Cross Trading Pty. Ltd and CV. Intrafood, while Hean Corporation and PT. Dua Kelinci signed a partnership in the same sector. Grein Australia Pty Ltd and PT. Sayap Mas Utama signed a deal for food and beverage products as well as consumer goods. Lastly, Wemco Investment & Trading Ltd and PT. KMI Wire and cable Tbk. signed a contract for wire products. Batik artisans attend financial workshop in Cirebon
CIREBON - The Economic Creative Agency (Bekraf) on Friday held a financial workshop for batik artisans in Cirebon, West Java, to train them on how to make their products more saleable and how to access capital. The theme of the workshop was “Capacity Building Creative Business Communities”.
Sugeng Santoso, access non-banking director of Bekraf, said the workshop suggested sources the artisans could approach for capital, such as non-bank financial institutions (NBFIs). “The participants are local artists from Cirebon region, such as Cirebon, Indramayu, Kuningan and Majalengka,” he said.
“Through this workshop, Bekraf provided opportunities for start-ups to access capital sources such as NBFIs,” he added. He said the capital can be procured from NBFIs actors creative economy, a venture capital firm, and Revolving Fund Management Institution Cooperatives, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (LPDB-KUMKM).
Sugeng said Bekraf has signed an agreement with PBMT Ventura through the Access Non-Banking Directorate, Deputy II Capital Access Bekraf. After the collapse of yellow bridge, Students get to school by boat SEMARAPURA - The collapse of the yellow bridge that connects Ceningan to Lembongan on Sunday (Oct16) has meant that people from both of these area of Nusa Penisa are forced to make the crossing by boat. On Monday (Oct.17), many residents made the crossing by sampan boat and students from Ceningan also went to school in Lembongan by boat. After investigating the scene of the collapsed bridge, Regent of Klungkung, I Nyoman Suwirta, held a meeting in a makeshift office in one of SMA Wisata Darma High School’s classrooms. The meeting was atttended by district police chief and commander of the 1610 Klungkung military district, headman of Lembongan, chief of customary village and other related agencies. SAR Bali personel also went to the scene of the collapsed bridge by boat on Monday and local residents booed as the officers arrived on the scene. Ceningan resident Nyoman Darmawan expalined that people felt frustrated that the officers only arrived well after the fact. “Maybe, residents are annoyed that at the time of the incident no officers were to be seen so all evacuation efforts were conducted by local residents themsleves”, he said. Darmawan also questioned Governeor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika’s sincerity in showing up at the scene, because the Governor had promised to support the people of Nusa Penida. The people of Nusa Penida supported Governor Pastika during the elections so he is hopoing that the Gvoenrment of Bali will build a new permanent bridge but one that is not too wide. ”We do not want this bridge to be repaired. Local people are traumatized”, he said. Headman of Lembongan, Ketut Gede Arjaya expressed a similar opinion about the desire to have a new bridge built as soon as possible, because the communities of Ceningan and Lembongan rely on this crossing everyday. “Without this bridge, tourism, education and health services in Lembongan and Ceningan are done for” he said, adding that the yellow bridge that was built in 1994 has become a tourism icon for Nusa Penida. Regent Nyoman Suwirta has dealt with the lack of bridge by providing free passage to students and said that he will provide two shuttle boats using the government fund set aside for unexpected incidents. Under Australia’s tough immigration policy, asylum seekers intercepted trying to reach the country by boat are sent for processing at a camp in Nauru or to Manus Island in Papua New Guinea (PNG) and are not eligible for resettlement in Australia. Many asylum seekers on Nauru are being driven to attempt suicide to escape the prison-like conditions they face in indefinite detention, Amnesty alleged in a detailed report. “I reject that claim totally. It is absolutely false,” Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull told Australian Broadcasting Corp radio of the torture claim. “The Australian government’s commitment is compassionate and strong.” The detention was a “systematic regime of neglect and cruelty,” said Amnesty, adding that its findings were based on both desk research and field work in Nauru between July and October. “The conditions on Nauru - refugees’ severe mental anguish, the intentional nature of the system, and the fact that the goal of offshore processing is to intimidate or coerce people to achieve a specific outcome - amounts to torture,” it added. The Nauru government did not respond directly to the Amnesty report but criticised an ABC TV story that made similar allegations and quoted children on Nauru, where refugees are mainly from Iran and Afghanistan. “It was clear these children were coached,” the government said in a statement, calling the ABC report “biased political propaganda and lies”, and “an insult to the people of Nauru”. Almost 60 people, or about 15 percent of the 410 men, women and children on the island, reported they had either attempted suicide or had thoughts about harming themselves, Amnesty said. Despite receiving refugee status, they continue to be confined to poor accommodation with little access to medical care, it said, adding that children, who number just over a tenth of the detainees, suffered disproportionately. Despite failures, North Korea could field missile next year - U.S. expert WASHINGTON - In spite of the apparent failure of another North Korean missile test at the weekend, the country’s aggressive testing schedule could see its Musudan intermediate ballistic missile entering operational service sometime next year - much sooner than expected, a leading U.S. expert said on Monday. The U.S. military said on Saturday it had detected a failed launch of a Musudan, the latest in a series in violation of United Nations resolutions. The U.S. Strategic Command said the missile failed in a launch near North Korea’s northwestern city of Kusong. South Korea’s military said the missile failed immediately after launch, but neither it nor the Pentagon suggested reasons. The Musudan has range of some
3,000 km (1,860 miles), posing a threat to South Korea and Japan, and possibly the U.S. territory of Guam. Pyongyang claims that it has succeeded in miniaturizing a nuclear warhead that can be mounted on a missile, but this have never been independently verified. John Schilling, an aerospace engineer specializing in rocket propulsion, said it was noteworthy that North Korea had launched the missile from its west coast, rather than from its purpose-built test facility. “Moving to a roadside near Kusong is like taking the training wheels off the bicycle, seeing if you really have mastered something new,” he wrote on the 38 North website that monitors North Korea. Schilling said the move showed that in spite of only one successful
launch to show for seven attempts this year, North Korea was not simply repeating old failures. “They are continuing with an aggressive test schedule that involves, at least this time, demonstrating new operational capabilities. That increases the probability of individual tests failing, but it means they will learn more with each test,” he wrote. “If they continue at this rate, the Musudan intermediate -range ballistic missile could enter operational service sometime next year - much sooner than had previously been expected,” Schilling said. That pilot in the cockpit may someday be a robot
MANASSAS — From the outside, the single-engine Cessna Caravan that took off from a small airport here on Monday looked unremarkable. But inside the cockpit, in the right seat, a robot with spindly metal tubes and rods for arms and legs and a claw hand grasping the throttle, was doing the flying. In left seat, a human pilot tapped commands to his mute colleague using an electronic tablet. The demonstration was part of a government and industry collaboration that is attempting to replace the second human pilot in two-person flight crews with robot co-pilots that never tire, get bored, feel stressed out or become distracted. The program’s leaders even envision a day when planes and helicopters, large and small, will fly people and cargo without any human pilot on board. Personal robot planes may become a common mode of travel. Consider it the aviation equivalent of the selfdriving car. The program, known as Aircrew Labor In-Cockpit Automation System or ALIAS, is funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and run by Aurora Flight Sciences, a private contractor. With both the military and airlines struggling with shortages of trained pilots, defense officials say they see an advantage to reducing the number of pilots required to fly large planes or helicopters while at the same time making operations safer and more efficient by having a robot step in to pick up the mundane tasks of flying. The idea is to have the robot augment the human pilot by taking over a lot of the workload, thus freeing the human pilot — especially in emergencies and demanding situations — to think
strategically. “It’s really about a spectrum of increasing autonomy and how humans and robots work together so that each can be doing the thing that its best at,” said John Langford, Aurora’s chairman and CEO. Sophisticated computers flying planes aren’t new. In today’s airliners, the autopilot is on nearly the entire time the plane is in the air. Airline pilots do most of their flying for brief minutes during takeoffs and landings, and even those critical phases of flight could be handled by the autopilot. But the ALIAS robot goes steps further. For example, an array of cameras allows the robot to see all the cockpit instruments and read the gauges. It can recognize whether switches are in the on or off position, and can flip them to the desired position. And it learns not only from its experience flying the plane, but also from the entire history of flight in that type of plane. The robot “can do everything a human can do” except look out the window, Langford said. But give the program time and maybe the robot can be adapted to do that too, he said. In other ways, the robot is better than the human pilot, reacting faster and with knowledge instantaneously available, able to call up every emergency checklist for a possible situation, officials said. Hospitals face difficulties to manage waste
DENPASAR - Hospitals in Bali face difficulties in processing their medical waste. In addition to using the WWTP for liquid medical waste treatment, clinics or health centers and hospitals also use septic tanks. In the meantime, the solid medical waste treatment uses incinerator. However, the operation of incinerator needs permission from the Ministry of Environment and environmental impact analysis (EIA) test. On that account, medical waste treatment is not cheap. This makes hospitals and health care facilities get difficulties in managing their waste. Ultimately, they decide to use the services of third parties in the waste management. Kuntjoro Adi Purjanto, Chairman of the Indonesia Hospital Association (PERSI) explained that the regulation on the waste treatment has been available, both issued by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Environment and Forestry. According to him, if the problem of medical waste is faced together, it will not become difficult. “We have to sit together and think of medical waste as a shared responsibility. Waste issue will not become a burden and constraints, but if the waste problem is not considered as a shared responsibility it becomes difficult. To that end, it requires a strategic alliance to overcome this problem,” he said. He added that some hospitals coalesced in the PERSI members indeed process their medical waste
through the services of a third party and some others manage by themselves. However, most medical waste management is done independently. “Not all of the third parties qualify for the requirements of the medical waste processing,” he said. In the meantime, the application for operating permit to Ministry of Environment and Forestry is not easy. Hospitals with primary tasks to serve the public health then have increasing burden when addressing waste problem. “In issuing permit, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry must also refer to the standards and guidelines,” he explained. Sometimes the expensive waste management is not included in the hospital budgeting. On that account, he considered it necessary to have competent people in the field of hospital waste management from the upstream to downstream, including the planning. “To that end, there are no fields claiming no costs, but all need costs,” he said. Considering there are hospitals owned by central government and local government, when they are unable to finance their activities, the hospital owners are required to finance such activities. Payment claims issued by the health insurance agency have not included the cost of waste processing. Thus, the differences which have not been covered by the hospitals should be covered by local government or hospital owners. (may)

Leading up to the full moon of the fourth month of the Balinese calendar (October), a variety of grandiose rituals were held at several customary villages in Karangasem. In the older villages of Karangasem in particular, a sacred dance dedicated to God, known as the Rejang dance is performed with beauty and grace in the temples. The people of Karamgasem’s customary villages eagerly await the performance of the rejang dance known for is beauty. Throughout the month of October, rituals such as the usaba gumang at Bugbug customary village and aci kapat at Timbrah customary village, held on Sunday (Oct. 16) both featured the Rejang Dance. Typically, before theses rituals, the rejang dance was performed as part of the usaba dangsil in old villages like Bungaya customary village (combination of rejang dance owned by Asak and Bungaya) as well as the ritual at Tengah hamlet, Tihingan (Bebandem subdistrict) and at Jasri (Karangasem subdistrict). This unique dance always drwas many photographers in Bali to try to catch a shot of this dance that is apprently very rarely perfromed outside of Karangasem. In Balinese Hinduism, the Re-
jang dance symbolizes the angels (dedari) coming down to earth bringing the holy water of life for the peace and tranquility of customary villages. So, the performance of the rejang dance is vital to any rituals. Sometimes, the rejang dance is performed in collaboratin with other customary villages, like during the usaba dangsil 2016 during which the villages of Bungaya and Asak performed together at the Bungaya Hall to welcome the arrival of the deities. Secretary of the usaba dangsil ritual committee, I Gede Krisna Adi Widana, explained that the implementation of this great ritual in Karangasem had neer been so grandioase in the known history of the region. “It is really a rare and sacred moment”, he said.
Rejang dancer from different customary villages have different costumes and makeup styles. The most fundamental differences lie in the style of headdress worn and music played during the ceremony. Bungaya customary village, for instance, accompanies its rejang dance with selonding gamelan music, while Timbrah uses gong gamelan music while the movements of the dance are quite similar in both villages. Rejang dancers play special role in both of these customary villages. Timbrah community leader Nengah Sukada, has said that of the 12 rejang dancers there are four leaders with different titles: Dedari Agung, Dedari Suci, Dedari Kendran and Dedari Tohok. In Timbrah girls who have no physical disabilities are named as rejang dancers when they are junior high school and they are obliged to pay devotional service as a rejang dancer. All rejang dancers coem out to perform for the celebrations of Aci Kapat and Kuningan. (kmb31)

Chief of the Denpasar Prosecutor’s Office, Erna Noormawati Widodo Putri, said that after the second handover, the prosecutor is designated to finalize the indictment plan. She would soon complete this indictment, if necessary, within 10 days. Her agency has been able to finalize to be further submitted to the Denpasar District Court. “We are targeting the indictment could be accomplished within ten days and the suspects can be immediately transferred to the court. However, pursuant to the existing SOP there has been provision for this kind of case where detention of the suspects can be made up to 30 days before being transferred to the court,” affirmed Erna. Regarding the arrest, the two suspects are temporarily detained for the next 20 days until the indictment can be completed. In accordance with Criminal Code, the suspects
can be detained for up to 30 days or a longer period to the High Court up to 140 days if the Denpasar Court is difficult to prove. Based on procedures, the court may extend the detention period of the suspects for up to 180 days or six months for the trial process. However, her institution with the prosecutor will judge the case so that the trial will only last for four months. “We estimate the trial will be held after the prosecutor and the court appointed the judges to prosecute, so that the trial of this case could be possibly commenced next two weeks,” she added. As observation of Bali Post, the two suspects were accompanied by their respective legal counsel. David with new look or without dreadlocks, was accompanied by Haposan Sihombing. This legal counsel graduated from the Udayana University said that in the second phase David answered the questions where at the time of incident last August 17 he did not think to cause death. “Essentially, David regretted and has apologized to victim’s family through a letter,”

He said that the letter was written bilingually, namely in English and Indonesian. “Essentially, our client (David—Ed) already apologized to the victim’s family for the deeds having been committed. He did not expect if his actions could end victim’s life,” explained Haposan. According to Haposan, the letter has been given to the victim’s family through the hamlet chief at Jimbaran. He has now changed his appearance and is no longer with dreadlocks. “He claimed to like the new hair style,” continued Haposan. In the meantime, Sara through her legal counsel, Erwin Siregar, even revealed the opposite. She insisted on claiming not guilty. Sara said that she has been examined four times at the Denpasar Police. Tom Cruise promises “unique brutality” in “Jack Reacher” sequel
LOS ANGELES - Tom Cruise stars as the aggrieved former U.S. military officer in sequel “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back”, promising “a level of unique brutality” in the new film based on Lee Childs’ books. This time, Reacher uncovers the conspiracy that led to his former colleague, Major Susan Turner, being accused of spying. Reacher
works to clear her name. “It has a great humour and it also has a level of unique brutality that this character brings,” Cruise said
at the film’s premiere on Sunday in New Orleans, where it was filmed. “It is part of who he is.” The movie was directed by Edward Zwick, who worked with Cruise on the 2003 film “The Last Samurai”. Co-star Cobie Smulders - the “How I Met Your Mother” actress - plays Turner. (rtr)

In from the Calais cold, migrant explores new French surroundings
MERIGNAC - In a dank flat in southwestern France, 23year-old Nasir stares at a living room wall bare except for a list of emergency numbers and contemplates life for his asylumseeking family outside the migrant camp in Calais that had become home. Nasir volunteered his family for resettlement days before France is expected to begin dismantling the violence-ridden camp in Calais known as the “Jungle”, where disease is rife and traffickers prey on individuals desperate to reach Britain. The two-storey apartment block in Merignac, a grey suburb on the outskirts of Bordeaux, is one of about 160 so-called reception centres where President Francois Hollande’s Socialist government plans to re-house temporarily the
Jungle’s dwellers. There are few signs of the social workers Nasir is told will visit frequently, but Merignac’s town hall has given the family food vouchers worth 80 euros for the week. “We feel good. It looks like someone cares a little bit about us,” Nasir said in broken English. “We’ll watch TV here. We’ll rest!” Not everyone supports President Francois Hollande’s plans for the Jungle’s closure. Many of
the nearly 10,000 migrants aid agencies estimate are holed up in the camp still target Britain, and a group of charities this week sought a court injunction to block the camp’s demolition. Amid a fiery debate on immigration and border controls ahead of a presidential election next year, opponents have turned up the heat on Hollande’s immigration policy. Hollande has been at pains to find a solution to the Jungle, which has become a symbol of the European Union’s struggle to stem the inflow of migrants as its memberstates bicker over who should take responsibility. Anti-immigrant sentiment is on the rise in France, reflected in the
growing popularity of the far-right National Front. Gunshots have been fired at two planned reception centres and one mayor wanted to hold a local referendum on whether to accept his town’s quota of migrants, exposing the resistance in parts of the country to Hollande’s plans for the Calais migrants.
CAUTIOUS WELCOME In Merignac, run by a left-wing mayor, residents living near the social housing block that once housed local teachers voiced wary sympathy for the resettled migrants. “We’ve lost all perspective. I’m not bothered as long as they don’t mess things up for us here,” said bar owner Pascal Thieblemont.
Merignac mayor Alain Anziani acknowledged local anxieties. He said the 32 places his municipality was making available would not be located at a single site. “We don’t want to create a ghetto,” said Anziani, adding some residents had expressed concern their housing needs would come second to the migrants.
