BANGKOK — Floodwaters are pressing toward Bangkok on several fronts as soldiers and residents pile sandbags, and officials sound a new alarm for neighborhoods east of the capital near the international airport. The Royal Irrigation Department on Tuesday advised residents in a flood plain east of Bangkok near Suvarnabhumi Airport to build sand-bag walls and move valuables to upper floors because water levels there were rapidly rising. A department spokesman stressed that the airport itself was not threatened because it is well protected. Authorities have been busy bolstering flood defenses along the northern perimeter of Bangkok in recent days. Bangkok’s other airport, north of Bangkok, is in another area where floods threaten, but is also believed safe for now.

Rain has not fallen in Nusa Penida
Cultivated land of farmers neglected Semarapura (Bali Post)—
Farmland of farmers in Nusa Penida sets to be neglected. The rain expected never falls whereas they have already prepared the arable land for this planting season since some time ago. “Unfortunately, it only rained once four days ago and no more rains after that,� said one of the residents of Jurangpait Hamlet, Nusa Penida, Made Suryana, Monday (Oct 17). He said that his party should have been entering the planting season at this time where the residents of Nusa Penida, primarily those in the upper area, had prepared their land cultivation to plant corn or cassava. Farmers would immediately plant the crop as soon as the rain fell. “In fact, it does not rain until these days,� he said again. Similar destiny was also experienced by another resident of Nusa Penida, Wira. According to him, the dry season had become the main obstacle for farmers in the region known to be dry and barren. Nevertheless, according to the Wira, the current drought had just an impact where the farmers were hampered to grow crops. For the sake of consumption, residents could still get water through the tanks belonging to the Municipality Waterworks (PDAM) in which the water was sold for IDR 180,000 per tank. The water was then stored in the reservoir that was also used to catch rainwater. “Stock of our groceries is still available,� said Wira. Such condition was justified by the Subdistrict Head of Nusa Penida, Wayan Suteja. When asked for his separate confirmation, Suteja claimed to have directly observed a number of villages in the upper part of Nusa Penida, such as Batu Kandik, Batu Madeg, Tanglad, Kutampi, Pejukutan and others. Those villages were dominantly producers of carbohydrates (corn and cassava). From the observation was known that local residents had cultivated their land for this planting season because it had rained previously. “However, it only rained for one day so that people are unable to cultivate their land further,� said Suteja. FUKUSHIMA, Japan (Reuters) - At last, victims of Japan’s nuclear crisis can claim compensation. And they are angry. They are furious at the red tape they have to wade through just to receive basic help and in despair they still cannot get on with their lives seven months after the huge quake and tsunami triggered the world’s worst nuclear disaster in 25 years. Shouts fill a room at a temporary housing complex where seven officials, kneeling in their dark suits, face 70 or so tenants who were forced to abandon their homes near the Fukushima nuclear plant after some of its reactors went into meltdown after the March 11 quake struck. “We don’t know who we can trust!” one man yelled in the cramped room where the officials were trying to explain the hugely complex procedures to claim compensation. “Can we actually go back
home? And if not, can you guarantee our livelihoods?” About 80,000 people were forced to leave their homes by the nuclear crisis. While the owner of the plant, Tokyo Electric Power Co, has made temporary payments to some victims, it was only last month that it finally began accepting applications for compensation. But the procedure is so complicated that it seems to just make things worse. After claimants have read a 160-page instruction manual, they then have to fill in a 60-page form and attach receipts for lodging, transportation and medical costs. “It’s too difficult. I’m going to see how it goes. I don’t want to rush and mess up,” said Toshiyuki Owada, 65, an evacuee from Namie town, about 20 km (12 miles) away from the plant. Owada is one of many who still has not applied for compensation even though they have lost jobs or businesses and are running out of cash.

Shouts of jubilation resounded when the Bali Culinary Professionals (BCP) team member, Dias RadityaWidjaja was awarded Silver medal, with the highest point score at the recent Salon Culinaire Malaysia 2011, beating 27 competitors from local and international hotels, restaurants and education institutions. More notable recognition came BCP’s way to Mardhika, receiving a diploma for his apprentice category. Dias, having trained hard in preparation for this competition in the kitchens of Bulgari Bali Hotel, presented a fish main-course. Alongside him were his team members HelmyWijaya trained at ST Regis Balifor meat/poultry main-course category and Mardhika Prasetya Nugraha Homantrained at Nikko Bali Resort and Spa for the apprentice chicken/salmon main-course.

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

JAKARTA - Finance Minister Agus Martowardojo said global economic conditions were worsening and therefore Indonesia should be on its guard. “Global economic conditions are now worse than three weeks ago,” he said at a coordination meeting on the 2012 budget bill here on Monday. He said his assessment was based on the results of a meeting of G20 countries last week. He said it was said at the meeting, projections of the world`s economic growth had been revised down down from 4.4 percent to 4.0 percent with growth in the developed countries estimated at around 1.5 percent and in developing countries at around six percent. “It is even possible the world`s economy will only grow one percent or be corrected from four percent,” he said. Therefore, he said, there were five signals that should be watched closely. Firstly, he said, it was risk intensification in Europe. He said “intensification will be rife in view of fiscal, banking and liquidity management while politically European countries must be united in agreeing on the bailout programs.” Secondly, he said, it was the economic slowdown in the US which was caused by a slowdown in the payment of public debt, household debt, fiscal and mortgage obligations and the yet-to--be completed housing policy. The third signal was the global shock as a result of the indebtedness of some European countries such as Greece, Italy and Spain. Agus said the next signal was the threat economic overheating in developing countries while the fifth signal was economic risks in Middle Eastern countries.

Freeport resumes production activities in Papua Antara
JAKARTA - PT Freeport Indonesia has resumed its production activities in Papua province after they were temporarily stopped last Monday (Oct 17) due to rising tension between its management and workers, a minister said. “Today, operational processes are running at about 50 percent of capacity with production of ore reaching 207,000 tons per day,” Mineral and Energy Resources Minister Darwin Saleh Zahedi said here on Tuesday. The minister expressed hope that PT Freeport`s management and workers would find a win-win solution to their problem. The labor dispute at Freeport began with differences between workers and the management over the inclusion of a higher pay system in a new collective labor agreement (PKB). The difference of views emerged during negotiations to draw up a new PKB for the 2011 - 2013 period. The negotiations on
the new PKB lasted 30 days from July 20 to August 19, 2011 but were later extended by seven days until August 26, 2011. But because the workers union and the management failed to reach an agreement, the government fielded a tripartite plus team composed of representatives of the ministries of law, manpower, energy and mineral resources and police) businessmen (national executives of Apindo) and workers to have direct dialogs with the workers` representatives. Manpower Minister Muhaimin Iskandar said he was sending a special team to Timikia, Papua, to make persuasive approaches and help defuse tensions between the PT Freeport management and its employee. “We will continue to provide assistance to overcome the problem at Freeport in manpower terms by involving negotiators between the workers union and the company`s management. We hope that this industrial relations dispute will soon be settled, and not claim more victims,” the minister said.

President Yudhoyono here on Monday summoned six candidates to replace five ministers in the present Second Unity Cabinet and the head of the State Intelligence Agency. They were Gita Wirjawan, Amir Syamsuddin, Azwar Abubakar, Djan Farid, Dahlan Iskan and Lieutenant General Marciano Norman. Gita Wirjawan who is now head of the National Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) was named trade minister to replace Mari Elka Pangestu, and Amir Syamsuddin, who is secretary of the Ethics Council of the ruling Democrat Party, minister of law and human rights to replace Patrialis Akbar while Azwar Abubakar from the National Mandate Party (PAN) was assigned as minister of administrative reform to replace EE Mangindaan. Djan Farid meanwhile was named minister of public housing to replace Suharso Monoarfa who resigned recently while Dahlan Iskan was to be minister of state enterprises to replace Mustafa Abubakar. Norman Marciano would replace Sutanto as chief of the State Intelligence Agency (BIN). Presidential spokesman Julian Aldrin Pasha said PresidentYudhoyono would still summon more candidates on Tuesday. “The summoning of candidates is to continue until tomorrow, I can assure you that but I don`t know the exact schedule,” Julian said at the presidential palace compound.

This year s thanksgiving ritual to God was held on Tuesday (Sep 20) coincided with the kerta masa (harvest season) of the farmers situated at the village in the Mengwi Subdistrict, Badung. Chief of Subak Tegan, Kapal Customary Village, I Made Nuada, explained that since 2003 when he was asked to serve as chief of the subak organization, the subak at Kapal had never faced harvest failure. At the moment, the total area of Subak Tegan came to 183 hectares supported by 870 members. One hectare of land yielded about 8 tons of grains. Through the procession known as tipat bantal war and ngusaba jelih lambih ritual farmers expressed their profound gratitude for the success of abundant harvest. Yield of harvest in the form of processed foods namely tipat and bantal were returned to the ÂżHOG ZLWK WKH KRSHV WKH\ FRXOG EHFRPH the seed and source of life. Meanwhile, Chief of Kapal Customary Village, A.A. Gede Dharmayasa, added that rendezvous of tipat and bantal symbolized the seed of life. Tipat or ketupat was a processed food from rice wrapped in square bag of young coconut leaf representing a female energy. Then, bantal was an oval snack of glutinous rice wrapped in young coconut leaf and symbolized the male energy. In the Hindu concept of energy, women and men were called Purusha and Pradhana. The encounter of both energies was believed to give life to all creatures. The war procession of tipat bantal was organized in two stages. It was carried out for about 15 minutes in the middle courtyard of the Desa Temple by some bare-chested men. Within this procession, the society was divided into two groups. Each group was armed with tipat and bantal. Afterward, the group threw the tipat and bantal each other. One of the residents would bring a mat used as the pad sheet to acquire the seed of life source from the throw of tipat precisely hitting the bantal. This pair of tipat and bantal would be used as a means of ngusaba jelih lambih. Furthermore, the tipat bantal war would be continued in front of the Desa Temple involving thousands of Kapal customary villagers. The war lasted about for 30 minutes accompanied with
the sound of gamelan music. When the war accomplished, the road body DURXQG WKH WHPSOH ZRXOG EH ÂżOOHG E\ sticky bantal breaking during the war. To prevent accidents, the customary village would immediately clean it up. The origin of tipat bantal war tradition is described in ancient palm-leaf manuscripts. One of them is the Tabuh Rah Pengangon belonging to one of the Kapal villagers, Ketut Sudarsana. To sum up, it is said that when Asta Sura Ratna Bhumi Banten ruled Bali Island succeeded his brother, Shri Walajaya Kertaningrat, who died in the Caka Year 1259 or 1337 AD, he appointed a vice regent named Ki Kebo Taruna or better known as Ki Kebo Iwa and already had a great knight named Ki Pasung Grigis. At that time, the king instructed the vice regent to restore the Purasada Temple located at Kapal Village. In the Caka Year 12 0 or 1338 AD, Ki Kebo Iwa departed to Purusadha Temple accompanied by Pasek Gelgel, Pasek Tangkas, Pasek Bendesa and Pasek Gaduh. Previously, they left for Nyanyi Village to pick up bricks as a material for the temple restoration. Unfortunately, it was not explained how Kebo Iwa restored the temple. Once upon a time, Kapal Village suffered a famine due to harvest failure leading to chaos in society. In response to the situation, Ki Kebo Iwa pleaded the way out to the Creator by performing meditation in the Purusadha Temple. From the meditation, he received revelation from the Lord Shiva Pasupati to implement aci rah pengangon by means of presenting tipat bantal as a symbol of Purusha and Pradhana to engender the source of life. The revelation also instructed the residents of Kapal Village not to sell tipat or rice bag because it represented the energy of feminism or the motherland. Ultimately, the aci rah pengangon was implemented at Kapal Village so the Kapal Village turned prosperous and peaceful. Until now, the tradition is still carried out in the form of tipat bantal war. This Museum of Statue is a ďŹ eld archeological museum. It has been built since 1960 under the supervision of Bali’s Archeological Regional OfďŹ ce and was opened for public in 1974. In this building there is a collection of archeological remains dated back at pre-History of Bali. This Museum is located between Pejeng and Bedulu village, by the side of the road to Tampak Siring. The distance from Penataran Sasih temple to the Museum is about 400 m. There are a lot of domestic and foreign tourists visiting this museum. They visit this place in order to look at the archeological remains or for doing a research. Among the collection of pre-Historical remains, there are also some stuff made of stones, bones and so forth, the most attractive sight is some sarcophaguses originating from several places in Bali. In general the sarcophagus as are in the form of turtle, having bulges at its sides and decorated with a mask showing a big overlooking eyes, open mouth or joking with its tongue coming out. Other collection, among other things is some bronze statues, etc.

In addition to his standing as a fellow all-time, charttopping music legend, the late King of Pop also owned a substantial share of the publishing rights to the Beatles’ back catalog, and he married Presley’s daughter, Lisa Marie. Now, Jackson is being mentioned with the Fab Four and The King for yet another reason: his life and music are being celebrated as theirs were with a Cirque du Soleil show. “Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour” made its U.S. debut Saturday night at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, only a handful of miles away from the old Motown Records headquarters where Jackson got his start as a member of The Jackson 5. And of course, the moonwalk is represented, not only on stage, but on the massive video screens behind it, where footage of the man himself is displayed throughout the show. Brooding over rugged moss-covered hills on Iceland’s southern edge, Katla is a much bigger beast than the nearby Eyjafjallajokul volcano, which chugged ash all over Europe for several weeks in an eruption that local scientist Pall Einarsson describes nonetheless as “small.” Named after an evil troll, Katla has a larger magma chamber than Eyjafjallajokul’s. Its last major eruption in 1918 continued more than a month, turning day into night, starving crops of sunlight and killing off some live-
stock. The eruption melted some of the ice-sheet covering Katla, flooding surrounding farmlands with a torrent of water that some accounts have said measured as wide as the Amazon. Now, clusters of small earthquakes are being detected around Katla, which means an eruption could be imminent, seismologists say. The earthquakes have been growing in strength, too. After a long period of magnitude 3 tremors, a magnitude 4 quake was detected last week. “It is definitely showing signs of restlessness,” said
Einarsson, a professor of geophysics at the University of Iceland. Teams of seismologists and geologists at the university are tracking the spike in seismic activity and working with disaster officials to prepare communities near Katla like Vik, a small town of some 300 people that is flanked by black sand beaches. Civil defense authorities have been holding regular meetings with scientists. Disaster officials have also drafted an evacuation plan and set aside temporary housing, but many fear they may have less than an hour to evacuate once the volcano erupts. Iceland sits on a large volcanic hot spot in the Atlantic’s mid-oceanic ridge. Eruptions, common throughout Iceland’s history, are often triggered by seismic activity when the Earth’s plates move and magma from deep underground pushes its way to the surface.

TORONTO — The maker of the struggling BlackBerry tried to soothe tens of millions of frustrated customers Monday, offering more than $100 worth of free software to each one and giving some a month of technical support as compensation for last week’s massive outage. But some BlackBerry users and experts cast doubt on whether the freebies from Research In Motion would be enough to keep people from abandoning the tarnished brand in favor of more popular smartphones. “Most of the people that use BlackBerrys are business people and all they care about is: ‘Does it work?’” said Chris Allen, a cable technician in Fall River, Massachusetts. The free software will be made available over the coming weeks on BlackBerry App World. The premium apps, which typically
cost $5 to $15 each, include programs such as iSpeech Translator and the games “Bejeweled” and “Texas Hold’em Poker 2.” The offer runs until the end of the year. The free technical support will be available to corporate customers. The blackout began when a crucial traffic-routing computer failed in Europe. The disruption could not have come at a worse time for RIM as it struggles to compete with Apple’s iPhone and with smartphones running the Android system from Google Inc. Like 90 percent of American parents, Matthew Sullivan allows his infant daughter and five-yearold son to watch television, videos and sometimes web-streamed content on his smartphone. He usually limits their screen viewing to just over an hour a day, and admits that handing his phone to his 16-monthold daughter so she can watch a YouTube video can keep her busy and quiet while they run errands together. “We know it’s not great for them, but it’s not bad either,” Sullivan, a 36-year-old editor in Wilmington, Delaware, told AFP. Over the past decade, media has pervaded the developed world to such an extent
that the American Academy of Pediatrics on Tuesday issued its first guidelines since 1999 to discourage any screen time for kids under two. The largest US pediatricians’ group says some of the 50 or so studies on the topic have shown that screen viewing can be linked to slower language development. In a new twist, it also warned parents to be aware of the negative effects their own screen-watching can have on their children. “I like to call it secondhand TV,” said pediatrician Ari Brown, who is the lead author of the AAP guidelines, in an interview with AFP. “When the TV is on, the parent is talking less. There is some scientific evidence that shows that the less
talk-time a child has, the poorer their language development is,” she said. “Clearly, no one is listening to this message. In this ubiquitous screen world, I think we need to find a way to manage it, and make it a healthy media diet.” The latest guidelines do not refer to interactive play such as video games on smartphones or other devices, but to media watched passively on any kind of screen, be it phone, computer, television or other. “This updated policy statement provides further evidence that media -- both foreground and background -- have potentially negative effects and no known positive effects for children younger than two years,” it said

The Spaniard once again showed strong long-run pace in the Korean Grand Prix, but his chances of fighting for the podium were dented by a lowly grid slot and a poor opening stint. Speaking after the race, Alonso believed that Ferrari still had work to do to extract more speed out of its car over a single lap on Saturdays. “We had the pace at the end of the race and, it is true, with the soft tyres we were quite quick. But in the beginning I was nearly at the maximum as well, so I don’t think that with free air I could do much better than what I was doing. “This is a consequence of a bad qualifying. It is something that we normally experience on Sundays - a better pace than Saturdays but always because the qualifying performance is not too good we find ourselves arriving to the leading group at the end of the race, a little bit too late. “We need to improve pure per-
formance on Saturday, try to start a bit further up and then on Sunday, we know for whatever reason, our pace is similar to them. The Spaniard missed last weekend’s race in Australia after injuring the fourth finger on his left hand in a crash during the warm-up. He underwent surgery in Australia before flying home to Barcelona to start his recovery, and he is also missing this weekend’s race in Malaysia. Yamaha said a decision on his participation at Valencia will depend on the progress of his recovery.
Lorenzo said he was eager to get back on the bike, and congratulated rival Casey Stoner after the Australian secured the title last weekend. “Casey has had an incredible season with very few mistakes,” said Lorenzo. “He has always been very strong and consistent so it has been very difficult to beat him. Congratulations to him, he has been the best this year and deserves his second title, a huge achievement as it comes with a different manufacturer. “I would have liked to fight until the end,
maybe until Valencia but the accident on Sunday has made it impossible. I am very proud of my team for all the hard work they have put in to take second in the Championship. Now we have to think about next year and work as hard as possible to win again. “After the crash I was very worried that I would not have full feeling in my finger again.
