Competition of Balinese Modified Bridal Makeup held to enliven the Nusa Dua Fiesta 2010 on Sunday (Oct 17) was welcomed enthusiastically. The number of participants taking part exploded to 878 participants. Previously, the committee only targeted 500 participants. With that amount of participants, the event all at once broke a record of the Record Museum of Indonesia (MURI). Such a quite unique event also drew the attention of visitors. The participants showed off their modification skill. Despite modifications, the makeup presented remained to refer to the Balinese culture and traditions. Most participants consisted of makeup artists that had received training in non-formal educational institutions growing in the community. In the meantime, participants were assessed by a team having a high competence in related sphere. The competition was the result of cooperation of the family empower-

ment and prosperity (PKK) of Badung Regency, Agung Salon and Bali Tourism Development Corporation (BTDC) Nusa Dua. Chairperson of the Committee of Tokoh tabloid, Inten Indrawati, said the competition was one of the main activities carried out in the series of informal training and education process to provide insight and skills to the community members of Bali. Ayu Srikandhyawati, said that there were several ways to do early detection on child’s growth and development. other the processes will then be late, too. But, there are cases where the process up to the normal sitting, standing and walking occurred slowly,” said Sri. Of the cases ever handled by the Growth and Development Installation of Sanglah Hospital, Sri added that there was a case where a child was able to stand up late. Here, parents should carefully look at what caused it. “When the case was researched, in fact, the late ability to stand up on the child was caused by the weak ankle ligament so it could not support the body powerfully or its feet were flat so they could not track with a great force,” said Sri. For such cases, it needed an ongoing exercises and the child should be treated by using special shoes that could normalize the condition of its legs. Aside from late capability of standing up, some special cases such as down syndrome, cases of Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) up to Attention Defiant Disorder (ADD) was also addressed in the Growth and Development Installation. For parents whose children were slow to speak should be wary of suffering from ADHD or ADD. How to find out was the lack of eye contact from the child when invited to speak and children’s attention switched quickly to other things. Basically, according to Sri, there were four things conducted in the

These four things were interrelated and mutually supportive. Physiotherapy was usually used to train the skill of motor muscles such as the ability to stand up. Meanwhile, occupational therapy was to train the fine motor skills such as the skill of hand to hold a burden. This therapy was usually undertaken for children with special treatment such as Down Syndrome. Speech therapy was to train the speech skills. It was not only intended for children being late to talk and children with special needs such as ADD and ADHD, but also given to deaf children receiving the Cochlear implant. “Basically, there is an early detection in use such as the Denver Development Screening Test (DDST) or Denver Scale in which there were four main things observed such as social contact, language, fine motor skill and gross motor skills,” said Sri. The success to maximize the growth and development of a child, Sri added, did not only depend on the growth and development team, but also on the involvement of parents. “Therapy only lasts for few hours, while the rest is the role of parents to continue it at home,” he added. Subak as an institution regulating the matters of irrigation on agricultural land should have a legal protection to maintain and preserve the existence of agricultural land belonging to its members. Legal protection is manifested through awig-awig or internal regulation of the subak. This matter was revealed in the event of regulation inauguration belonging to Subak Abian Budhi Rahayu Leg, Buahan Customary Village, Payangan Subdistrict, Gianyar, Sunday (Oct 17). Inauguration of the regulation was attended by Deputy Regent of Gianyar Dewa Made Sutanaya. According to I Wayan Suda, the Division Head of Customary Affairs in the Gianyar Cultural Services said that coaching, improvement and learning process among the members of Subak Budhi Rahayu Leg was driven by the high desire of each members to learn and have internal regulation as reference in performing the self-tasks properly. It was considered important in maintaining the Tri Hita Karana concept, particularly relating to the Ulun Suwi Temple and irrigation infrastructures within the territory of Subak

Abian Budhi Rahayu. Chief of Subak Abian Budhi Rahayu, I Made Budiana, said that internal regulation posed an obligatory instrument used as reference in helping the development and progress of subak. If based on legal protection, the existence of the subak organization could engender an orderliness and good governance among the subak members. Moreover, if the management was based on trust and sincerity to provide devotional services to Supreme God abiding in the Ulun Suwi Temple, of

course it would have an impact on the serenity of subak existence. “This awig-awig denotes a regulation that must be underlain by an attitude of respect and obedience. If we have composed it based on clear mind and heart, it would have strict legal power,” he explained. Public order agency stays to check land ownership Semarapura (Bali Post)—

Public order agency (Satpol PP) of Klungkung Regency could not move as such to discipline the increasingly rampant illegal shacks in the location of former C-class excavation. The public order officers should check the land ownership first whether they were built on state’s land or land belonging to private property. “We did so to avoid any mistake in taking action,” said the Chief of Public Order Agency of Klungkung Regency, Komang Darma Suyasa, recently. According to Darma Suyasa, tens and even hundreds of illegal shacks

situated in two areas namely Tangkas and Gunaksa Village. On that account, the checking of land status should be undertaken by involving the village officials in both regions. “It is the bottom line apparatus knowing for sure about the real condition there. Meanwhile, the number of illegal shacks in the area of the former C-class excavation increasingly developed again. It indicated there were more and more activities committed by dwellers in that area that had been officially closed. Dominant dwellers of the shacks were from Lombok, while some others from Banyuwangi, East Java. On average, they worked as a sand sifter with income amounting to IDR 30,000 per day. The support to Bali Province Government in facing accusation on Spatial Planning Plan (RTRW) Bali Regional Regulations (Perda) 2009-2029 by the Pecatu residents is not spreading. As the item that’s problemised involves the temple’s holiness radius which is clearly stated on Bhisama PHDI Number: 11/Kep/I/PHDI/1994 dated 25th January 1994. If Bali is still want to be preserved, then the temple holiness radius has to be clearly protected as this is a strategic way to protect, preserve and save Bali from its physical and spiritual aspects. To the Bali post last Friday (15/10) Great Village Head Traditional Village Main Board (MUDP) for Bali Jero Gede Putu Suwena and Petajuh Bendesa Agung Ida I Dewa Gde Ngurah Swastha, stated to hope for Bali Government not to be afraid in facing the accusation that is brought to the Supreme Court. According to these two Bali public figures, the holiness radius to reach five kilometer is very essential and has to be defended as it is crucial in saving Bali’s context, “This radius should always exist. Bali’s small, let’s protect it together. Investors can go in, anyone can yet with the regulations still obeyed.” Defending Bali

According to Suwena and Swastha, the RTRW Perda stated that the temple holiness radius is a strategic law product to save Bali. It is clarified, this is to protect Bali from being destroyed. And so they hoped no more Bali residents will put commercial needs to priority without thinking the environment and the nature of Bali especially it’s spiritual importance, “In this context MDP Bali will support the Bali Government to fight for the RTRW Perda.” Moreover, Swastha also hoped Bali residents to not wrongly understand this radius. In the five kilometers, two kilometers and apanumpug (50 meters) from the temple doe not mean Balinese can’t build something in this area or just becoming empty spaces. Yet it is possible to build supporting facilities such as for farming, husbandry and other productive business that don’t damage the temple’s holiness. But for those tourism supporting facilities like hotels, discotheques, masseuse, pubs and its kind have to be forbidden as it potentially damaging the temple’s holiness, “So those productive business won’t be all forbidden. But for those that are potentially damaging the holiness should be forbidden of limited.” The moral support for Bali Government to fight for Bali RTRW Perda was also coming from Bali academicians that joined the Bali Rector Forum, Indonesia Private Universities Association (APTISI) Bali and Bali Great Lecturers Forum. As an institute, Udayana University also planned to form a team to go through the law, environment, social culture, religious and more aspects to give a suggestion to the Bali Province to keep the RTRW Perda Bali going. The readiness of these academicians to back up the fight was mentioned by

Head of Bali Rector Forum Prof. Dr. I Made Bakta, Head of APTISI Bali Prof. Dr. I Gde Sridarma and Head of Bali Great Lecturers Forum Prof. Dr. I Wayan Wita. The three great teachers clarified that the RTRW Perda Bali is an official law product that is an aspiration of the Bali people to preserve Bali. If at this time there are public that is trying to erase it, then it is the Bali academician obligation to support the regional government as they were also involved intensively in making this regulations, “The same aspiration stated by the MUDP Bali, we also want support to defend and to implement this as stated.” More over, the three lecturers also clarified this regulations is a facility to protect the continuing development to avoid explotation in Bali from its environment and economy aspect by the irresponsible investors. It is said the judicial reviewed regulations was truly implemented as a base law to protect the Bali holy land, “We hope, all the Balinese people from academics, youth organizations, societies, public figures and religious ones, all the components of Bali residenst to give support fully to the government to fight for the regulation. Of course by stating their views can be brought through in a legally form so it will be heard by the Indonesian Republic Supreme Court.” Tax Burden

In taking action with the burdened high tax to the Pecatu residents on unproductive lands, Suwena, Swastha, Bakta, Sridarma and Wita all asked the Bali government to appreciate the complain truly. They hoped the government will give a special policy to those lands in the temple holiness radius to be free of tax, “This kind of solution can be done to minimalise those complains. Actually these problems can be discussed thouroughly so it will result a solution that advantaged the two sides. Residents won’t be disadvantaged and government still does its commitment to save Bali’s nature in its real state.” Sridarma and Wita admitted to very understand the situation. Yet the two disagree if this disadvantaging situation will cause RTRW Perda to be erased. Also the two great lecturers asked the Bali Government and all regional/city governments in Bali to take strategic actions to minimalise the disadvantaging things that has to be paid by local residents. As a solution, each government is asked to pay the land taxes that is on the regulations and in the future to free those lands by buying lands, “And more important, regional governments are required to clarify their attitude on the buildings that are ther before the RTRW Perda was validated. For example those local houses and other buildings that are there before the regulation validated. So regional governments should take notes on the buildings also to map out areas that are not potentially great.” They added after these steps are done, the regional and city governments are asked to clarify the law of the Perda. SEOUL – South Korea expressed scepticism Monday about North Korea’s recent peace overtures as police said they are on high alert for any attempts by the communist state to disrupt the upcoming G20 summit. A record 50,000 police will be deployed to guard the November 11-12 Group of 20 gathering against possible threats from the North, international terrorists or violent protesters, National Police Agency chief Cho Hyun-Oh told reporters. “Recently international terrorism is on the rise and risks related to North Korea still remain,” Cho said. His agency said in a statement Seoul is concerned about “unpredictable situations” during the start of the North’s power transfer from leader Kim Jong-Il to his youngest son Jong-Un. Unification Minister Hyun InTaek, in an interview with Monday’s JoongAng Daily, said Pyongyang has made “incredibly speedy” moves to put the succession process in place. But he cautioned that this may not bring political stability in the nuclear-armed nation.

Relations have been icy since Seoul accused Pyongyang of a deadly torpedo attack in March on a South Korean warship, a charge it denies. The North in recent weeks has made some conciliatory gestures, including agreeing a new round of temporary reunions for separated families late this month. But Hyun, in remarks confirmed by his ministry, said the North “cannot succeed in changing this state of affairs through insincere warm gestures”. The minister said possible summit talks could be an important means of securing peace and stability but the North must prove its sincerity. Media reports say the two sides held secret talks last year about another summit, following the 2000 and 2007 events, but discussions broke down. “The questions we have now are when might they (summit talks) be held and what can be accomplished at a summit,” Hyun said. “Another big question is whether North Korea is approaching the goal with sincerity, which could affect our decision on whether to hold the talks. “However, we have not noticed that sincerity yet.”

PARIS – French truck drivers staged go-slow operations on highways, rail strikes intensified and petrol stations ran out of fuel on Monday as protests gathered pace ahead of a Senate vote on an unpopular pension overhaul. The government, which has stood firm on President Nicolas Sarkozy’s plan to raise the retirement age through months of protests, assured the public infrastructure would not freeze up despite a week-long strike at refineries that has forced hundreds of petrol stations to close. Rail services were also badly disrupted as strike action ramped up ahead of a fresh nationwide protest on Tuesday in what threatens to be a make-or-break week for Sarkozy over his reform. Government ministers are stress-

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

MANILA – Super Typhoon Megi became the strongest cyclone in years to buffet the Philippines on Monday, while floods in Vietnam swept away a bus and left 20 people missing, including a girl pulled from her mother’s grasp by the raging waters. The huge storm striking the Philippines left at least one man drowned there, and was expected to plunge later into China, where authorities evacuated 100,000 people from a coastal province. The storm could head later in the week to Vietnam, where 24 deaths from flooding already have been reported in recent days. Thousands of Filipinos sought shelter while authorities warned millions of residents and rice farmers along the typhoon’s path to look out for damage to crops, homes and power lines. Megi packed sustained winds of 140 miles (225 kilometers) per hour and gusts of 162 mph (260 kph) as it made landfall midday Monday at Palanan Bay in northeastern Isabela province, and was losing some of its power while crossing the mountains of the Philippines’ main northern island of Luzon. One man trying to rescue his water buffalo slipped and fell into a river and probably drowned, said Bonifacio Cuarteros, an official with the Cagayan provincial disaster agency. As it crashed ashore, the typhoon whipped up huge waves and toppled electricity poles, cutting off power, phone and Internet services in many areas. There was zero visibility and radio reports said the wind was so powerful that people could not take more than a step at a time. YANGON – Myanmar’s detained pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi wants to get a Twitter account once she is released from house arrest so she can get in touch with the younger generation after years of isolation, her lawyer said Monday. The 65-year-old Nobel Peace Prize winner, who has been detained by the military government for 15 of the past 21 years, entered her latest period of detention in May 2003, before the Twitter era started. Her detention expires on Nov. 13, prompting speculation she will be freed though there has been no such official announcement from the ruling junta. The country’s first election in 20 years will take place days earlier on Nov. 7, timing that analysts say was designed to keep the opposition leader locked away for the polls. “Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s current wish is to sign up on Twitter when she is released,” said her lawyer Nyan Win, who has visited her twice in the past week. “Daw” is a title of respect in Myanmar. “She told me she wants to use Twitter to get in touch with the

More caterpillars, military personnel for Wasior Antara

WASIOR - More caterpillars and one battalion of military personnel would be deployed to support the cleaning of debris of Wasior disaster floods, an army officer said. “The extra caterpillars will have immediately been deployed to Wasior,” Captain (Inf) Irawan of Manokwari military compound told ANTARA here Monday. There have been 21 units of caterpillars and other heavy vehicles being used in the flood-hit town of Wasior, Teluk Wondama district, West Papua Province, he said. The extra caterpillars and a battalion of army personnel had been transported by the Brawijaya regional military command in East Java on Sunday, he said. The equipment and army personnel were expected to have arrived in Wasior a week later, he said. Their presence would enable workers and volunteers to clean mud, log

woods, and stones and debris of collapsed houses and buildings in the flood-hit town, Irawan said. “The cleaning activities have so far been hampered by the lack of heavy vehicles due to the huge amount of mud and debris of damaged buildings,” he said. During his visit to Wasior last Thursday, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono had ordered related authorities to supply more heavy vehicles to help the recovery process. At that time, President Yudhoyono had asked the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) to provide the extra supplies of heavy vehicles and zeni unit personnel. The Wasior flash flood, which struck on October 3 and 4, had reportedly killed at least 150 people, and left a few hundreds of others still missing. Wasior town in Teluk Wondama, West Papua Province, was covered with mud, logs and rocks following the flood. The town badly needs heavy equipment for evacuation and clean-

ing operations. The central government had ensured that there were no illegal logging activities around the thick forests of Wasior. Forestry Minister Zulkifli Hasan said the absence of illegal logging activities had been ensured through visual observation from an aircraft flying over the Wasior region. Regardless of the real causes of this disaster, it has encouraged the central government and various elements in the society to assist the victims. The provincial government and state-own enterprises in West Sumatra, for instance, are to conduct a fund raising drive for flood victims in Wasior, West Papuan province. In Gorontalo and South Sulawesi city of Makassar, a group of students and journalists also initiated fund raising program for the flood victims. The flash flood has not only caused lots of families to lose their loved ones but also caused injury to 853 people and forced 4,625 others move to safer places.

The Australian media raised similar allegations last month against Indonesian police in the eastern province of Maluku, where rights groups say separatists and their supporters are regularly abused in custody. Bali plans to complete coral reef restoration in 2014 Antara

NUSA DUA - Badung district plans in 2014 to restore damaged coral reefs along the southern coasts of Bali where popular tourists’ site are located, an official said on Sunday. “Funds for the restoration project will be allocated gradually each year from various sources, central government, provincial budget and contributions from business circles and hotels,” I Made Badra, head of Badung fishery and maritime office said. Speaking to the press at Coral Restoration and Body Painting Competition in Peninsula beach, Nusa Dua, Badra said the restoration project is expected to be completed in 2014 along the an 82-km coastline in southern Bali. Badra added that restoration had

been conducted since 2008 to enable coral reefs grow and in fact the restoration was already done in the 1980s. The next project would be aimed at restoring coastal regions covering Tanjung Benoa, Mengiat beach, Uluwatu and Kuta beach. “The coastal regions of southern Bali are in bad need of restoration because destruction caused by human activities. Coral reefs are important to preserve the sea environment,” Badra said, adding that the government has a strong commitment to restore the coral reefs. Badra pointed out that there should be no more destructive activities to the coral reefs such as fish bombing by people in those areas. In local religious belief, there a concept called Tri Hita

The governor made the statement in an event to observe the Global Hand Washing Day 2010. “We should use this momentum to make healthy and clean life style a habit. We must also motivate and encourage the Balinese people to make Bali a Green Province,” he said. Oct. 15, 2010 is the third annual Global Hand Washing Day. The single largest factor that helped reduce the number of infection/disease-related deaths in the 19th century was sanitation, particularly hand washing. Hand washing is the single most effective way to prevent infections and ill-

nesses. Every year, diarrhea and acute respiratory infections cause the death of more than 3.5 million children under five. These figures could be cut dramatically if hand washing with soap were widely practiced, according to World Health Organization (WHO). The global Public-Private Partnership for Hand washing with Soap (PPPHW) works to save children’s lives by promoting the awareness of this simple practice. Research shows that, if widely practiced, hand washing with soap could reduce diarrhea by almost fifty percent and respiratory infections by nearly twenty-five percent. A large-scale increase in the practice of hand washing with soap would make a significant contribution to meeting the Millennium Development Goal 5: reducing deaths among children under five by twothirds by 2015. The Global Hand Washing Day was also commemorated in other cities such as Yogyakarta, Semarang (Central Java), Bandung (West Java), Jayapura (Papua), Pontianak (West Kalimantan), and Bandar Lampung (southern Sumatra).

MANGUPURA — Government must take strategic measures in an effort to save and preserve the coastal regions. Two threats deserving to get special attention in the Badung Regency are coastal erosion and water pollution on account of business waste. A member of Commission B of the Badung House, I Wayan Puspa Negara, said that the coastal region was essentially a buffer zone, so its existence should be absolutely maintained. However, in harmony with the growth and development of natural phenomena, the coastal regions were progressively getting serious threat. Directions Cut the 4 crabs into quarters with a cleaver or large knife. With a hammer, gently crack the claws and harder sections of shell. Finely chop 6 shallots and 2 stalks lemon grass. Steep 2 teaspoons tamarind in half a cup of boiling water. Chop a handful of fresh coriander leaves. In a food processor, grind together 3 cloves garlic, 1 tablespoon fresh galangal, 2-3 birdseye chillies, seeded, 4 candlenuts (or substitute 8-10 cashews) and 1 teaspoon blachan (hard dark brown shrimp paste), 1 teaspoon turmeric and salt and pepper to taste. Heat 3 tablespoons oil in a large wok or pan, and fry the paste until fragrant. Add shallots, lemon grass, crab pieces and 2 cups coconut milk. Simmer for quarter of an hour. Strain the tamarind water and add half to the sauce. Taste and add more if you wish. Ladle curvy into a serving dish and scatter the fresh coriander on top. Serve with plain rice. Directions * Cut the beef fairly thin and trim it into small, square pieces. Marinate it for 1 hour or longer. Remember that pedas=hot++spicy hot! This is fried beef, with a robust flavour of chilli. Slice the shallots finely. Seed and slice the chillis. Fry them in a tablespoonful of oil, in a wok, stirring all the time until they are golden brown. Add salt to taste. Keep hot. Put a tablespoonful of oil in a thick frying-pan, and fry the slices of meat a few at a time. Three minutes on each side will be ample*. When all the pieces are cooked, put them into the wok with the shallots and chilli. Heat, and mix well. Sprinkle over the mixture 1 tablespoonful of lemon juice, or, better still, fresh lime juice. SHANGHAI - International Monetary Fund and central bank officials from around the world met in China Monday to discuss ways to boost the global economic recovery, amid mounting fears of a damaging currency war. The People’s Bank of China hosted the conference in the country’s financial hub Shanghai, bringing together central bank chiefs and other officials from Asia, Africa, Europe, and North and South America, the IMF said. The Shanghai conference follows IMF and World Bank annual meetings earlier this month, where finance officials discussed how to strengthen the recovery from the worst recession since World War II and the global financial system. It also comes ahead of this week’s key Group of 20 meeting in South Korea, where currency reform is expected to dominate talks, amid fears that nations could adopt trade barriers to counter the rising prices of Asian exports. “The conference is part of the ongoing international examination of the policy challenges posed by the global financial crisis,” the Washington-based IMF said in a statement. PBOC chief Zhou Xiaochuan and IMF managing director Dominique Strauss-Kahn were co-chairing the meeting, the institution said. The US Federal Reserve was represented by Kevin Warsh, a member of the central bank’s policy-setting Federal Open Market Committee. resentative in China, said all discussions would be carried out behind closed doors. BEIJING - Booming auto sales in China have spurred manufacturers to step up production so fast that concerns over “blind investment” and overcapacity in the sector are emerging, analysts said. China’s auto market overtook the United States in 2009 as the world’s largest and will remain so this year with up to 17 million vehicles expected to be sold. The Chinese market potential remains huge in the world’s most populous nation as the percentage of people owning cars is still relatively low, analysts have said. Sales in 2010 are expected to increase by between 25 percent and 30 percent, after a massive 46 percent surge last year, as an emerging middle class snaps up cars along with other consumer status symbols. “At the moment, the international joint ventures just don’t have enough capacity to build all the cars they could sell,” Klaus Paur, of TNS Research International, told AFP. “This of course triggers investment decisions,” he said, adding that much of the current growth was coming from China’s inland provinces where the potential for auto sales is the biggest. To meet the rising demand, foreign automakers last year began announcing plans to increase their production capacity. While gearing up to open its 10th factory in China this year, German auto giant Volkswagen also announced it will open an 11th production facility in 2013. PSA Peugeot Citroen will boost production capacity at its joint venture plant with Dongfeng from 450,000 units to 750,000 units, while also setting up a second joint venture plant with Chinese automaker Chang’an in Shenzhen. Michaels is a genuinely charismatic presence, likable even for nonfans of his music. Malaysian authorities are building more of the makeshift bridges after some orangutans were spotted using them over the past year, said Marc Ancrenaz, co-founder of French-based conservation group Hutan, which is working with Malaysian state wildlife department officials on orangutan protection. Conservationists estimate about 11,000 orangutans live in Malaysia’s Sabah state in Borneo, but many are isolated from each other because swaths of forest have been cut for development, logging and oil palm plantations. Environmental groups and wildlife authorities have been hooking up old

The first bridge was set up seven years ago, but it was only last year that an orangutan was captured on camera using one of them. NAGOYA, Japan – The world cannot afford to allow nature’s riches to disappear, the United Nations said on Monday at the start of a major meeting to combat losses in animal and plant species that underpin livelihoods and economies. The United Nations says the world is facing the worst extinction rate since the dinosaurs vanished 65 million years ago, a crisis that needs to be addressed by governments, businesses and communities. The two-week meeting aims to prompt nations and businesses to take sweeping steps to protect and restore ecosystems such as forests, rivers, coral reefs and the oceans that are vital for an ever-growing human population. These provide basic services such as clean air, water, food and medicines that many take for granted, the United Nations says, and need to be properly valued and managed by governments and corporations to re-

verse the damage caused by economic growth. More resilient ecosystems could also reduce climate change impacts, such more extreme droughts and floods, as well as help fight poverty, the world body says. “This meeting is part of the world’s efforts to address a very simple fact — we are destroying life on earth,” Achim Steiner, head of the U.N. Environment Program, said at the opening of the meeting in Nagoya, central Japan. Delegates from nearly 200 countries are being asked to agree new 2020 targets after governments largely failed to meet a 2010 target of achieving a significant reduction in biological diversity losses. A U.N.-backed study this month said global environmental damage caused by human activity in 2008 totaled $6.6 trillion, equivalent to 11 percent of global gross domestic product. Greens said the meeting needed to agree on an urgent rescue plan for nature.

LINZ, Austria - Ana Ivanovic ended a title drought stretching back two years by defeating Switzerland’s Patty Schnyder 61, 6-2 to win the WTA event in Linz on Sunday. The seventhseeded Serb had reached four semi-finals this season, but had failed to win a tournament since she triumphed at the same event in 2008. Schnyder, who also lost the 2005 and 2007 Linz finals as well as a final in Budapest this year, remains without a title since she won in Bali in 2008. The former French Open champion didn’t drop a set all week and wrapped up the final in just 47 minutes. It might have been even swifter had she not conceded her serve when leading 5-0 in the second set and then allowed Schnyder to hold serve for the only time in the match. “Patty’s a tough opponent and I honestly didn’t expect this scoreline,” said Ivanovic, who will compete in Luxembourg next week. “But I did take a lot of risk and tried to be aggressive and step in, and it was working for me today.” Schnyder began with two doublefaults and went on to drop her opening service game when Ivanovic forced a backhand error. BERLIN - British match referee Ian John-Lewis came under fire Monday after American boxer Shannon Briggs was left in hospital following a crushing defeat to WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko of Ukraine. Briggs bravely went the distance but was left with concussion and two fractured cheekbones during Saturday’s bout, which Klitschko won 120-107, 120107, 120-105 to extend his record to 41 wins, 38 by KO, with two defeats. Although Briggs got out of the ring by himself, the dreadlocked American collapsed in the toilets minutes later while waiting to undergo doping control, according to Bild newspaper A number of reports Monday hit out at the “passive” approach of match referee John-Lewis, claiming that during the beating of Briggs he never consulted the American to see if he was fit to continue. Criticism was also levelled at Briggs’ coach, Herman Caceido, who later claimed Briggs has “forbidden” him to throw in the towel. Even Klitschko’s coach, Fritz Sdunek, expressed surprise at Briggs’ corner men. “If that had been my boxer, I wouldn’t have let him go past the 10th round,” said Sdunek. “Briggs probably won’t be the same after being hit so many times.” According to Bild, Briggs, who weighs 119 kg, took 302 punches to the face and body, 171 of which were deemed clean punches. Ducati hail Stoner after Aussie win Agence France Presse PHILLIP ISLAND - Ducati believe they have finally found the right balance in their bikes after Casey Stoner’s stunning weekend victory in the Australian MotoGP at Phillip Island. Stoner destroyed his rivals as he charged to an 8.5 second victory over new world champion Jorge Lorenzo and seven-times world MotoGP champion Valentino Rossi on Sunday. Stoner surged past Rossi into third place in the championship standings with his third victory in his last four GPs with everything pointing to Ducati finishing the season on a high. This season’s title has gone for the 2007 world champion Stoner, but Ducati are eyeing further wins at Estoril on October 31 and Valencia on November 7 to build a winning bike for the 2011 season. “Our bike is working really well now,” Ducati team manager Vittoriano Guareschi said. “I would say we have found the right balance for it over the last five races and now we have two left that I think we can do well in.” Stoner won at Aragon and Motegi before an error of judgement cost him on the opening lap at Sepang before his eye-catching showing at Phillip Island. “Casey

McLaren: Writing drivers off ‘unwise’ MCLAREN boss Martin Whitmarsh has warned rivals that it would be “unwise” to write Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton off the title battle despite their gap to the top of the standings. With only three races remaining, Hamilton is 28 points behind championship leader Mark Webber, with Button three points adrift of his team-mate. The gaps mean that the McLaren duo will need the drivers in front to endure a series of poor races in order to have a shot at the title. Despite that, Whitmarsh says his team will not give up until the end, and insisted it would not be clever to rule his drivers out of the fight. “With three races remaining, and 75 points on the table for the drivers, it would be unwise to write off Jenson, Lewis or McLaren,” said Whitmarsh. “Both drivers have won world championships before - they understand the difficulties of such a unique situation, and both have learned how to deliver their best under high pressure. They will be ready for this battle. “And it’s a battle that will doubtless be won by consistency. While we will continue with our aggressive development strategy, bringing

further new components to this race, we’re mindful of the need to bag points at every race. “Nonetheless, we are committed to winning, and won’t give up without a fight.” Hamilton has scored just 10 points in the last three races, thanks to his fifth-place finish at the Japanese Grand Prix, where the Briton was hit by a gearbox failure.
