LOS ANGELES - From presidents to serial killers, Oscar-winning filmmaker Oliver Stone hasn’t shied away from exploring controversial figures, but he initially balked when asked to make a film about former National Security Agency (NSA) contractor Edward Snowden. “I didn’t want to do it, I wasn’t looking for trouble,” Stone told Reuters. But the 70-year-old director, known for films such as “JFK,” “Natural Born Killers” and “Wall Street,” said he changed his mind after he met with Snowden in Russia. “Although I was worried about it still being boring and dull, I saw it as a dramatic thriller. I felt like it wouldn’t get an audience as a documentary-type film,” Stone said. “Snowden,” out in theaters on Friday, traces Snowden’s journey from a conservative CIA agent to a disillusioned NSA operative until he fled the United States in 2013 and exposed the government’s mass surveillance programs of ordinary people. He is now living in Russia and is wanted by the U.S. government on espionage charges. Amnesty International and two other groups this week launched a campaign to have him pardoned. Police rule out attack as cause of Bali boat explosion
BALI — Indonesian police said Friday there is no indication that a terror attack was the cause of a tourist boat explosion in Bali that killed two people and injured about 20 others. Karangasem district police chief Sugeng Sudarso said investigators believe a fuel leak below deck caused a buildup of fumes that ignited, though the finding is provisional. Sudarso and Bali police spokesman Made Sudana said there was no sign of terrorism and a bomb squad did not find any explosive materials. Investigators have recovered body parts and continue to examine the boat, Sudarso said. The inccident was killing two women on board About 20 people were injured
on the speedboat that was ferrying tourists from Bali to neighboring Lombok. Bali became a byword for tragedy in 2002 when bombings by Jemaah Islamiyah militants killed 202 people, mostly foreigners. A sustained security crackdown since then has weakened JI but

The investigation is not only done by police but also by the Padangbai harbor authority. Chief of the Padangbai harbor authority, I Ketut Gede Sudarma, said on Friday (Sep. 16) that his office has made initial investigation a few moments after the blast. Skipper of the Gili Cat II fast boat is threatened with severe sanctions. Sudarma asserted that apart from the Padangbai harbor authority, the
initial investigation was also helped by two personnel from the Ministry of Transportation. Some parties having been undergoing related examination are the skipper of Gili Cat II, Totok Warito, the boat crews such as Sugiarto (chief engineer), Nyoman Supartika (deckhand) and Kadek Kris (deckhand). GM of Gili Cat II already underwent the examination, too. After the examination, Sudarma asserted that he is preparing preliminary investigation report (BAPP). He was reluctant to reveal the results of initial investigation of the harbor authority.
These results will be submitted to the Admiralty Court at the Ministry of Transportation. Admiralty Court has the task to carry out further investigation on ship accident. Principal of the SMPN 3 Bangli junior high school, I Nengah Suardana, admitted that currently the storytelling tradition has widely been abandoned by parents. In contrast to past time, parents would tell stories for their children at night before going to bed. “Now, it is rarely done. Very few parents tell story to their children before going to sleep,” he explained. One of the causes of the abandonment of storytelling tradition is the presence of technological development. For instance, varied entertainments presented on electronic media such as television makes parents, including children, reluctant to tell stories. “Busy activities of many parents today are quite time consuming so this has become the causes of the abandonment of this tradition,” he said.
In addition, Suardana also mentioned the other factor causing the abandonment of storytelling tradition by parents today is that many parents do not know about Balinese stories. It is aggravated by
their minimal interests in reading story books. According to Suardana, if only this storytelling tradition can be continuously passed on by parents, many benefits can be obtained from this activity. In addition to strengthening relationship between parents and children, added Suardana, it can also serve as a means of moral guidance and formation of character. Besides, storytelling is a means for preservation of Balinese language in this globalization era. This man frequently appointed to be jury panel in the Balinese

This former elementary school teacher in the 1960s was assigned to make storytelling about the Mahabharata every free time. In fact, children who were about to fall sick finally got recovered for fear of missing the story. He advised not to allow children to stare. Invite them to sing while playing or making something like a propeller made of paper. That’s why he said that corruptors may be the product of generation that never received any story of fairy tales from their parents. Prof. Dr. I Nyoman Dharma Putra, a laureate, confirmed that Balinese folklore is always feared to be extinct or marginalized. At the same time, Balinese folklore has always been promoted to be preserved because its values are considered important for the formation of character and preservation of intangible heritage as ethnic identity. In the context of character development, folklore should be promoted continuously through festival, mass media, audio-visual and YouTube. Folklore is the source of inspiration for modern literature, comics and art show. “When getting more worried about the extinction of the story, the dissemination and preservation efforts should be made more aggressively,” he said. Decline, foreign travelers crossing to Gili islands
AMLAPURA - The number of foreign travelers crossing to Gili islands in NTB such as the Gili Trawangan from Padangbai traditional harbor on Friday (Sep. 16) looked normal. This means that there is still crossing service after the explosion of the Gili Cat II fast boat on Thursday morning (Sep. 15) claiming two fatalities and injuring dozens. However, the traffic is not as busy as last August denoting the peak season of foreign tourist visit. One of the Padangbai residents often observing the crossing of foreign travelers to Gili Trawangan, Yuyun, said that the average travelers of this month reached hundreds of people or 500 per day, while in August reached 1,200 people per day.
When contacted in separate place, a legislator of the Karangasem House of Representatives, Nyoman Sartika, said that the number of crossing passenger reaches averagely 500 or more per day. All this time, he said, the government of Karangasem
has not been able to manage the traditional harbor used as crossing facilities to Gili Trawangan by foreign visitors, so that it gets nothing. “Harbor facilities and beach are used, but Karangasem can just watch,” he said. In the meantime, Chairman of the Karangasem House of Representatives, Nengah Sumardi, when contacted some time ago said that from the information obtained the daily average of foreign travelers crossing during peak season reached 1,200 people. By charging a parking ticket only, the party at Padang-
bai can earn about IDR 4 billion per year as the impact of busy crossing traffic from Padangbai to those Gili islands by using the facilities at the traditional harbor. The government of Karangasem has not gotten any levies or taxes on the use of the crossing harbor because the district has not had an institution or limited company to manage it. In addition, added Sartika, many hotel managements in Karangasem such as at Tulamben and Amed to Bunutan often complain or protest. It happens because the management of fast
boat often promotes or encourages their in-house guests of the seaside hotels in Karangasem or the guests that just stay at the hotels in Karangasem to cross to the Gili islands. As a result, their length of stay in Karangasem declines from a week to just one day or even just stop to piss and then cross to the islands located in the NTB. Sartika asked the government of Karangasem to pay attention to the complaints of hotel management in Karangasem, and manage the traditional harbor as well arrange the objects and tourist attraction. BANGLI - Bangli district has so many waterfalls, but some have not been well-known in the ears of general public. One of them is the Malet Kuta Mesir located located at Malet Kuta Mesir hamlet, Tiga, Susut. In addition to exuding beauty, around the waterfall also sits a mud puddle believed to be good for health. Cheers of tree leaves crashed by mountain breezes sound very crowded. The atmosphere indicates if the area remains quite pristine. Expanse of land filled with bamboo trees looks very spacious. It is believed to have the capability of curing various diseases. “In addition to the water at the patirtaan often used for purificatory ritual, the mud is taken advantage as a scrub. It is believed to cure various kinds of diseases,” said chief of Kuta Malet Mesir customary village, I Wayan Rana, Wednesday (Sep. 14). In addition to local residents, the efficacy offered by the springs and mud is also able to draw the attention of people from other regions such as Denpasar, Gianyar and Badung. Their arrival usually coincides with the auspicious day or holy days. The oblation presented is only the canang taksu. “The canang will be presented at Taman Temple,” he said. Previously, the agency already delivered the assistance of public forest program to a number of subak abian organizations, one of which is albizia seeds. “In the past, the area reached 400 hectares, but currently we do not distribute any assistance due to constrained by technical guidance to avoid the remaining budget,” explained Maharimbawa. The ratio of the public forest area and protected and production forest area, according to him is 40 by 60. In the west of this waterfall sits the Melanting waterfall with the height of 41 meters. Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro has touted the 17th meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement as one that would “be remembered for centuries,” as the unpopular leftist seeks to bolster his international legitimacy. Yet the turnout from the 120nation Cold War-era bloc has paled compared to past meetings, including the previous summit in Iran in 2012, attended by some 35 heads of state. Zimbabwe’s Robert Mugabe, Iran’s Hassan Rouhani and Palestine’s Mahmoud Abbas, as well as regional allies from Cuba, Ecuador and Bolivia are among the few heads of states who have landed on the Caribbean island of Margarita. The half-century old movement formed by nations wanting to avoid aligning with the United States or Soviet Union has dwindled in relevance over the years.
But it appears that heads of states’ attendance at the summit in recession-stricken Venezuela is particularly low, possibly even in single digits, although the government did not respond to a request for a list of attendees. Venezuela’s opposition, vying to remove Maduro in a recall referendum, has jumped on low attendance as a sign of his isolation. “Millions of dollars of Venezuelans’ money spent for the government’s ego,” said opposition leader Henrique Capriles. “Many of the countries didn’t come to the show!” In one glaring absence, cofounder and key member India did not send Prime Minister Narendra Modi, only the second time the country’s head of state has missed a summit since its 1961 founding. Venezuela is undergoing a major economic crisis that has
sparked worsening food shortages and triple-digit inflation. Margarita was once known as the ‘Pearl of the Caribbean,’ a tourist hub that drew visitors from around the world, but hotel occupancy is under half what it was last year and some islanders recently humiliated Maduro by chasing him in a poor neighborhood, banging pots and pans. The delegates who did come complained privately of a lack of organization, delays and shabby hotels, despite Venezuela’s efforts to make Margarita shine by repainting roads, stocking supermarket shelves and boosting security on the crime-ridden island. Venezuela unveiled a statue of Chavez near the summit on Friday, took over the group’s presidency on Saturday, and, in a series of speeches, leaders from Mugabe to Cuba’s Raul Castro lambasted imperialism and pledged their support to Maduro. BERLIN - German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservatives look set to suffer a second electoral blow in two weeks in a Berlin city vote on Sunday as voters are expected to express their unease with her refugee-friendly policy. The anti-immigrant Alternative for Germany (AfD) is expected to profit from a popular backlash over Merkel’s decision a year ago to keep German borders open for refugees and the party could enter its tenth regional assembly out of Germany’s 16 states. Voting in the German capital started at 8 a.m. (0600 GMT) and some 2.5 million people are eligible to decide who should represent them in the Berlin city assembly. Polling stations will close at 6 p.m. (1600 GMT) and public broadcasters will publish exit polls shortly afterwards. First projections are expected roughly half an hour later. Polls point to heavy losses for Merkel’s Christian Democrats (CDU) in the vote which means the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD) may be able to ditch them from their current coalition. That would likely raise the pressure further on Merkel one year before a federal election and could deepen divisions within her conservative camp. A drubbing in the eastern state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern two weeks ago triggered calls from Merkel’s conservative allies in Bavaria to toughen up her migrant policy with measures such as introducing a cap of 200,000 refugees per year. Merkel rejects such a limit and defends her approach to find a European solution to the migration issue by securing the continent’s external borders, agreeing migration deals with countries like Turkey and distributing refugees across Europe. The recent election losses have even raised questions about whether Merkel, Europe’s most powerful leader, will stand for a fourth term next year but her party has few good alternatives so she still looks like the most likely candidate. The latest Berlin poll by Forschungsgruppe Wahlen for ZDF public broadcaster put the CDU on 18 percent, down 5 points from the last election in 2011 and far behind the SPD’s projected 23 percent. It put the AfD on 14 percent, the environmentalist Greens on 15 percent and the leftist Die Linke at 14.5 percent. WASHINGTON - U.S. consumer prices rose more than expected in August as healthcare costs recorded their biggest gain in 32-1/2 years, pointing to a steady build-up of inflation that could allow the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates this year. The cost of living last month was also pushed up by sustained increases in rents. The uptick in inflation is likely to be welcomed by Fed officials when they gather next week to deliberate on monetary policy, though a rate hike is not expected at that meeting. “The economy may not be firing on all cylinders, but growth is enough to spark a little more inflation than we thought. The Fed decision is going down to the wire,” said Chris Rupkey,” chief economist at MUFG Union Bank in New York. The Labor Department said on Friday its Consumer Price Index increased 0.2 percent last month after being unchanged in July. In the 12 months through August, the CPI increased 1.1 percent after advancing 0.8 percent in the year through July. The so-called core CPI, which strips out food and energy costs, rose 0.3 percent last month, the biggest increase since February, after gaining 0.1 percent in July. Economists had forecast the CPI
nudging up 0.1 percent last month and the core CPI gaining 0.2 percent. The core CPI increased 2.3 percent in the 12 months through August after rising 2.2 percent in the year through July. The dollar rallied against a basket of currencies on the data, while prices for U.S. Treasuries were mixed. U.S. stocks were trading lower, with sentiment also hurt by declining oil prices and the U.S. Justice Department’s demand for $14 billion from Deutsche Bank to settle claims related to sales of mortgage-backed securities. The Fed is expected to leave interest rates unchanged next week against the backdrop of a raft of disappointing economic reports for August, including weak retail sales and industrial production as well as a slowdown in job growth. A separate report on Friday, however, showed consumer sentiment was steady in early September, suggesting retail sales could rebound in the coming months. The U.S. central bank has a 2 percent inflation target and tracks an inflation measure that has been stuck at 1.6 percent since March. Tens of thousands protest in Europe against Atlantic free trade deals
BERLIN - Tens of thousands of people protested in European cities on Saturday against planned free trade deals with the United States and Canada they say would undermine democracy and lower food safety, environmental and labour standards. Organisers -- an alliance of environmental groups, labour unions and opposition parties -- said 320,000 people took part in rallies in seven German cities, including Berlin, Hamburg, Munich and Frankfurt. Police put the figure at around 180,000. Smaller protests were also planned in other European cities, including Vienna and Salzburg in Austria and Gothenburg and Stockholm in Sweden. In Berlin, demonstrators waved banners reading “STOPP CETA STOPP TTIP”, another placard said “People over profits”. The demonstrations are against the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) with the United States and the Comprehensive Economic Trade Agreement (CETA) with Canada, currently being negotiated by the European Union’s executive with the respective governments across the Atlantic.
Opposition in Europe to the trade deals has risen over the past year, with critics saying the pacts would hand too much power to big multinationals at the expense of consumers and workers by establishing arbitration courts to settle disputes between companies and governments. “HORROR STORIES” EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom defended the planned trade deals and accused the opponents of deliberately heating up the debate with “horror stories and lies”. “The idea that TTIP will lower environmental standards is simply not true,” Malmstrom told German daily Bild. “Also the assertion that we’ll be flooded with genetically modified food is simply wrong. Our democracy of course won’t be undermined as some seem to believe.” Malmstrom said German export-
ers would benefit highly from the deals because they would reduce non-tariff barriers to trade. “This helps Germany and creates jobs,” she added. German Economy Minister Sigmar Gabriel, who faces crunch CETA vote on Monday by his Social Democrats (SPD), said that the trade agreements were Europe’s best chance to shape globalisation so that it served people and not only the interests of a few businesses. “If CETA fails, then we’ll not have another chance to shape globalisation in this way for decades,” Gabriel told Bild am Sonntag in an interview published on Saturday. “Europe still is the biggest trading region in the world. MAGELANG - Minister of Female Empowerment and Child Protection Yohana Yembise has urged parents and teachers to control the use of cell phones among children, as the device can easily allow them to access adult sites. “According to a report released by a trusted organization that compiles data through satellites, around 25 thousand images of children emerge on the internet every day,” she said in Magelang on Thursday. Minister Yohana made the statement after the declaration of the Child Friendly Rukun Warga (Community Association) in Magelang. The declaration was attended by a member of Commission 8 from the House of Representatives, Choirul Muna. The Minister further explained that a set of laws regarding pornog-
raphy had previously been established, and it needs to be brought forward again to limit children and their internet usage. “The Ministry has prepared a set of regulations to control childrens cell phone usage as pornographic sites can easily be accessed through the device,” she reiterated. Yohana also emphasized on controlling the use of the electronic device in school. Students can be allowed to bring their cell phone to school, but should be prohibited from having it in class as it is irrelevant to teaching activities.
Furthermore, teachers have reported cases of students who sit in the back row and were caught playing with their cell phones, even accessing pornographic sites in class. “Not only in school, but all Indonesian kids should be protected from the negative impact of cell phone use both at school and home,” Yohana remarked. Blocking access to pornographic sites, she added, has not been as effective as it hoped to be. It does not mean that cell phones should be banned for children; controlled usage that is monitored by parents at home and teachers at school is tolerable. Choirul said it is best not to expose children to the gadget too early. A cell phone can have both
negative and positive functions and it is all in the hands of the user, children who are yet to become aware of its negative impact, should not be allowed to find out for themselves. “Depends on our intentions for using the device, we can get both positive and negative content. Depends on which one we intend to access,” he stated. Choirul also noted that children need to be informed and encouraged to use cell phones for positive activities instead of negative ones, which is why the roles of parents and teachers are very important. “Generally, children should not really be allowed to use cell phones as we worry that most of them will not use the device for positive things,” he concluded.(ant)
JAKARTA - The Regional Representative Council (DPD) has said will leave the case of alleged corruption involving its chairman to the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to resolve. “Responding to the press conference held by the KPK leadership after it had caught a DPD member red handed, we, the DPD leadership and members, are concerned about the case,” DPD Deputy Chief Farouk Muhammad stated at the parliament building here on Saturday evening. Farouk noted that the allegation that the DPD chief was involved in a bribery case has nothing to do with the functioning of the DPD. “The legal action taken by the KPK will not influence the DPD in carrying out its duties and we will continue to perform our obligations institutionally and individually, as expected,” he stressed. According to Farouk, the DPD leadership and members also called on all parties, particularly the elite, to respect the principle of presumption of innocence and not to link the alleged misdeeds by one DPD member to the role of the DPD. He also urged against any media trial and urged the media to uphold the due legal process while reporting the case. KPK Chairman Agus Rahardjo had earlier announced that the antigraft body had named the DPD chief, identified by his initials as IG, and two other people, identified by their initials as XSS and MNI, as suspects in an alleged case of corruption related to sugar import quota for West Sumatra.(ant)
Indonesia urges NAM to reiterate support for Palestine`s independence
JAKARTA - The Indonesian government urged every member of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) to continue to support the Palestinian people in their struggle to achieve independence. Such support should continue until Palestine becomes a sovereign nation with East Jerusalem as its capital, Indonesia stressed. The appeal was voiced by Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Retno LP Marsudi during a ministerial level meeting of the Palestine
Committee of NAM, held in Venezuela, on Friday, a press statement issued by the foreign ministry here on Saturday said. She also emphasized the importance of NAM member countries support for the resumption of the Palestinian peace process. The Indonesian government fully supports the French governments initiative to reopen the peace talks. Indonesia was one of the 28 countries that participated in the Paris Meeting held in June 2016.
The government also encourages civic society organizations to play a bigger role in strengthening support for the peace process. “Various processes and initiatives carried out for peace in Palestine must be supported,” the minister urged. She also remarked that a stronger international pressure is needed to stop Israel from committing further violence and human rights violations against Palestinian people. Israel must also stop construction of illegal resettlement in occupied
Palestinian land. “Israel must not be allowed to derive economic benefits from the occupied territory,” she noted. She also called for stronger solidarity with the Palestinians by providing more technical assistance to Palestine. Support to Palestine is one of the objectives of NAM. Therefore, Indonesia reiterates a call for NAM member agencies to continue to help Palestine achieve its full freedom. She particularly appealed to NAM members, who have not yet
recognized the Palestinian state, to accord their full recognition soon. New York City shaken by ‘intentional’ explosion, 29 injured
NEW YORK - An explosion rocked the bustling Chelsea district of Manhattan on Saturday night, injuring at least 29 people in what authorities described as a deliberate, criminal act, while saying investigators had turned up no evidence of a “terror connection.” New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and other city officials said investigators had ruled out a gas leak as the cause of the blast, but they stopped short of calling it a bombing and declined to specify precisely what they believed may have triggered the explosion. Neha Jain, 24, who lives in the neighborhood, said she was sitting at home watching a movie when she heard a huge boom and everything shook. “Pictures on my wall fell, the window curtain came flying as if there was a big gush of wind,” she told Reuters. “Then we could smell smoke. We went downstairs to see what happened, and firemen immediately told us to go back.” Police said a sweep of the neighborhood following the blast had turned up a possible “secondary device” four blocks away consisting of a pressure cooker with wires

BEIRUT - U.S.-led coalition air strikes reportedly killed dozens of Syrian soldiers on Saturday, endangering a U.S.-Russian brokered ceasefire and prompting an emergency U.N. Security Council meeting as tensions between Moscow and Washington escalated. The United States military said the coalition stopped the attacks against what it had believed to be Islamic State positions in northeast Syria after Russia informed it that Syrian military personnel and vehicles may have been hit. The United States relayed its “regret” through the Russian government for what it described as the unintentional loss of life of Syrian forces in the strike, a senior Obama administration official said in an emailed statement. Pentagon press secretary Peter Cook said in an emailed statement that Russian officials did not voice concerns earlier on Saturday when informed that coalition aircraft would be operating in the strike area. The 15-member Security Council met on Saturday night after Russia demanded an emergency session to discuss the incident and accused the United States of jeopardizing the Syria deal. The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Samantha Power, chastised Russia for the move. “Russia really needs to stop the cheap point scoring and the grand-
standing and the stunts and focus on what matters, which is implementation of something we negotiated in good faith with them,” Power told reporters. Alvarez stopped Smith in the ninth round Saturday night after dropping him in the previous two rounds, winning the WBO light middleweight championship before a record crowd of 51,240 at AT&T Stadium. The victory kept the 26-year-old Alvarez (48-1-1) on pace for a showdown with undefeated, unified middleweight champion Golovkin that is expected be held by September 2017, according to Alvarez promoter Oscar De La Hoya. “I fear no man,” Alvarez said in the AT&T ring through an interpreter. “I am the best fighter in this. About a month ago, we offered GGG three or four times as much to make the fight.” Golovkin is a 34-year-old based in Santa Monica, California and the Kazakhstan native has said he wants the fight as soon as possible. Signals have been mixed from the Alvarez camp whether he was waiting to better negotiating terms and location as well as wanting to spend more time training at a higher weight. Alvarez had won a middleweight title but vacated it for this shot at the junior middleweight championship, sparking criticism that he was avoiding the hard-punching Golovkin. “We are ready for him and he doesn’t want to accept,” Alvarez said. “As I said, we are a team and I fear no one. RIO DE JANEIRO - Iranian cyclist Sarafraz Bahman Golbarnezhad has died after crashing in the C4-5 event at the Rio de Janeiro Paralympics, the first such death at the Games since they began in 1960, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has said. “The IPC confirm that Golbarnezhad, 48, was involved in a crash at around 1040 on the first section of the Grumari loop, a mountainous stretch of the course,” the International Paralympic Committee said. “The athlete received treatment at the scene and was in the process of being taken to the athlete hospital when he suffered a cardiac arrest. “The ambulance diverted to the nearby Unimed Rio Hospital in Barra da Tijuca where he passed away soon after arrival.”
An investigation into the accident has been launched. “As far as we’re aware it is the first fatal accident in a Paralympics,” the IPC’s director of communications Craig Spence told Reuters in an emailed response. It was Golbarnezhad’s second race in Rio. He finished 14th in the C4 time trial on Wednesday. The cyclist took up the sport in 2002 and also participated at the London 2012 Paralympics. “He was an exemplary Paralympic sportsman who, with love and energy, tried his best to promote the name of Iran and to make all of us proud and at the end he gave his life for this,” said Golbarnezhad’s national Paralympic Committee. “All members of the Iranian cultural and sports camp here
express condolences to his family and the Iranian nation. The name of Bahman Golbarnezhad will be inscribed in the proud history of Iranian Paralympics.” The Iranian flag has been lowered to half-mast in the Athletes Village. The Paralympic flag will also be flown at half-mast in the village and at the Riocentro venue where Iran play Bosnia in the sitting volleyball final on Sunday. “This is truly heart-breaking news and the thoughts and condolences of the whole Paralympic movement are with Bahman’s family, friends and team mates as well as the whole of the National Paralympic Committee of Iran,” said IPC president Philip Craven. Milik came off the bench and scored twice to help Napoli beat Bologna 3-1 and move provisionally to the top of Serie A on Saturday. BREMEN — Werder Bremen sacked Viktor Skripnik as coach on Sunday after the team started the season with four straight defeats, ending his 20-year association with the club. Under-23 coach Alexander Nouri was to take over Monday on an interim basis for the home league games against Mainz and Wolfsburg, assisted by Florian Bruns. The Bundesliga club also dismissed Skripnik’s assistants Florian Kohfeldt and Torsten Frings with immediate effect. “We decided for this step because we weren’t convinced after the performance in ‘Gladbach that the turnaround could be achieved quickly in the current constellation,” Bremen sporting director Frank Baumann said. “We want to thank Viktor and his assistant coaches for their work in the past years.” Bremen lost 4-1 at Borussia Moenchengladbach to start the league season with three straight defeats on Saturday, while it was also knocked out in the first round of the German Cup by third-division side Sportfreunde Lotte. Canelo Alvarez knocks out Liam Smith in 9th round
BANGLI - Taman Bali Village has a beautiful park denoting a heritage of Taman Bali Kingdom. The gold pavilion was renovated in 1986 by villagers of Taman Bali. Of course, this heritage has an attraction and potential to be developed into a tourist attraction, especially fishing attraction that can be combined with biking and cross-country run activity. Alvarez stopped Smith in the ninth round Saturday night after dropping him in the previous two rounds, winning the WBO light middleweight championship before a record crowd of 51,240 at AT&T Stadium. The victory kept the 26-year-old Alvarez (48-1-1) on pace for a showdown with undefeated, unified middleweight champion Golovkin that is expected be held by September 2017, according to Alvarez promoter Oscar De La Hoya. “I fear no man,” Alvarez said in the AT&T ring through an interpreter. “I am the best fighter in this. About a month ago, we offered GGG three or four times as much to make the fight.” Golovkin is a 34-year-old based in Santa Monica, California and the Kazakhstan native has said he wants the fight as soon as possible. Signals have been mixed from the Alvarez camp whether he was waiting to better negotiating terms and location as well as wanting to spend more time training at a higher weight. Alvarez had won a middleweight title but vacated it for this shot at the junior middleweight championship, sparking criticism that he was avoiding the hard-punching Golovkin. “We are ready for him and he doesn’t want to accept,” Alvarez said. “As I said, we are a team and I fear no one. I fight the best and I want to fight the best. I am the best at this sport and Viva La Mexico!” Negotiations toward a fight this fall fell apart, and some were surprised Alvarez said Golovkin had been offered a fight. RIO DE JANEIRO - Iranian cyclist Sarafraz Bahman Golbarnezhad has died after crashing in the C4-5 event at the Rio de Janeiro Paralympics, the first such death at the Games since they began in 1960, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has said. “The IPC confirm that Golbarnezhad, 48, was involved in a crash at around 1040 on the first section of the Grumari loop, a mountainous stretch of the course,” the International Paralympic Committee said. “The athlete received treatment at the scene and was in the process of being taken to the athlete hospital when he suffered a cardiac arrest. “The ambulance diverted to the nearby Unimed Rio Hospital in Barra da Tijuca where he passed away soon after arrival.”
An investigation into the accident has been launched. “As far as we’re aware it is the first fatal accident in a Paralympics,” the IPC’s director of communications Craig Spence told Reuters in an emailed response. It was Golbarnezhad’s second race in Rio. He finished 14th in the C4 time trial on Wednesday. The cyclist took up the sport in 2002 and also participated at the London 2012 Paralympics. “He was an exemplary Paralympic sportsman who, with love and energy, tried his best to promote the name of Iran and to make all of us proud and at the end he gave his life for this,” said Golbarnezhad’s national Paralympic Committee. “All members of the Iranian cultural and sports camp here
express condolences to his family and the Iranian nation. The name of Bahman Golbarnezhad will be inscribed in the proud history of Iranian Paralympics.” The Iranian flag has been lowered to half-mast in the Athletes Village. New York City shaken by ‘intentional’ explosion, 29 injured
NEW YORK - An explosion rocked the bustling Chelsea district of Manhattan on Saturday night, injuring at least 29 people in what authorities described as a deliberate, criminal act, while saying investigators had turned up no evidence of a “terror connection.” New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and other city officials said investigators had ruled out a gas leak as the cause of the blast, but they stopped short of calling it a bombing and declined to specify precisely what they believed may have triggered the explosion. Neha Jain, 24, who lives in the neighborhood, said she was sitting at home watching a movie when she heard a huge boom and everything shook. “Pictures on my wall fell, the window curtain came flying as if there was a big gush of wind,” she told Reuters. “Then we could smell smoke. We went downstairs to see what happened, and firemen immediately told us to go back.” Police said a sweep of the neighborhood following the blast had turned up a possible “secondary device” four blocks away consisting of a pressure cooker with wires

U.S.-led forces strike Syrian troops, prompting emergency U.N. meeting
BEIRUT - U.S.-led coalition air strikes reportedly killed dozens of Syrian soldiers on Saturday, endangering a U.S.-Russian brokered ceasefire and prompting an emergency U.N. Security Council meeting as tensions between Moscow and Washington escalated. The United States military said the coalition stopped the attacks against what it had believed to be Islamic State positions in northeast Syria after Russia informed it that Syrian military personnel and vehicles may have been hit. The United States relayed its “regret” through the Russian government for what it described as the unintentional loss of life of Syrian forces in the strike, a senior Obama administration official said in an emailed statement. Pentagon press secretary Peter Cook said in an emailed statement that Russian officials did not voice concerns earlier on Saturday when informed that coalition aircraft would be operating in the strike area. The 15-member Security Council met on Saturday night after Russia demanded an emergency session to discuss the incident and accused the United States of jeopardizing the Syria deal. The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Samantha Power, chastised Russia for the move. “Russia really needs to stop the cheap point scoring and the grand-

U.S. inflation stirring as healthcare, housing costs surge
WASHINGTON - U.S. consumer prices rose more than expected in August as healthcare costs recorded their biggest gain in 32-1/2 years, pointing to a steady build-up of inflation that could allow the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates this year. The cost of living last month was also pushed up by sustained increases in rents. The uptick in inflation is likely to be welcomed by Fed officials when they gather next week to deliberate on monetary policy, though a rate hike is not expected at that meeting. “The economy may not be firing on all cylinders, but growth is enough to spark a little more inflation than we thought. The Fed decision is going down to the wire,” said Chris Rupkey,” chief economist at MUFG Union Bank in New York. The Labor Department said on Friday its Consumer Price Index increased 0.2 percent last month after being unchanged in July. In the 12 months through August, the CPI increased 1.1 percent after advancing 0.8 percent in the year through July. The so-called core CPI, which strips out food and energy costs, rose 0.3 percent last month, the biggest increase since February, after gaining 0.1 percent in July. Economists had forecast the CPI
nudging up 0.1 percent last month and the core CPI gaining 0.2 percent. The core CPI increased 2.3 percent in the 12 months through August after rising 2.2 percent in the year through July. The dollar rallied against a basket of currencies on the data, while prices for U.S. Treasuries were mixed. U.S. stocks were trading lower, with sentiment also hurt by declining oil prices and the U.S. Justice Department’s demand for $14 billion from Deutsche Bank to settle claims related to sales of mortgage-backed securities. The Fed is expected to leave interest rates unchanged next week against the backdrop of a raft of disappointing economic reports for August, including weak retail sales and industrial production as well as a slowdown in job growth. A separate report on Friday, however, showed consumer sentiment was steady in early September, suggesting retail sales could rebound in the coming months. The U.S. central bank has a 2 percent inflation target and tracks an inflation measure that has been stuck at 1.6 percent since March. Tens of thousands protest in Europe against Atlantic free trade deals
BERLIN - Tens of thousands of people protested in European cities on Saturday against planned free trade deals with the United States and Canada they say would undermine democracy and lower food safety, environmental and labour standards. Organisers -- an alliance of environmental groups, labour unions and opposition parties -- said 320,000 people took part in rallies in seven German cities, including Berlin, Hamburg, Munich and Frankfurt. Police put the figure at around 180,000. Smaller protests were also planned in other European cities, including Vienna and Salzburg in Austria and Gothenburg and Stockholm in Sweden. In Berlin, demonstrators waved banners reading “STOPP CETA STOPP TTIP”, another placard said “People over profits”. The demonstrations are against the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) with the United States and the Comprehensive Economic Trade Agreement (CETA) with Canada, currently being negotiated by the European Union’s executive with the respective governments across the Atlantic.
Opposition in Europe to the trade deals has risen over the past year, with critics saying the pacts would hand too much power to big multinationals at the expense of consumers and workers by establishing arbitration courts to settle disputes between companies and governments. “HORROR STORIES” EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom defended the planned trade deals and accused the opponents of deliberately heating up the debate with “horror stories and lies”. “The idea that TTIP will lower environmental standards is simply not true,” Malmstrom told German daily Bild. “Also the assertion that we’ll be flooded with genetically modified food is simply wrong. Our democracy of course won’t be undermined as some seem to believe.” Malmstrom said German export-

MAGELANG - Minister of Female Empowerment and Child Protection Yohana Yembise has urged parents and teachers to control the use of cell phones among children, as the device can easily allow them to access adult sites. “According to a report released by a trusted organization that compiles data through satellites, around 25 thousand images of children emerge on the internet every day,” she said in Magelang on Thursday. Minister Yohana made the statement after the declaration of the Child Friendly Rukun Warga (Community Association) in Magelang. The declaration was attended by a member of Commission 8 from the House of Representatives, Choirul Muna. The Minister further explained that a set of laws regarding pornog-
raphy had previously been established, and it needs to be brought forward again to limit children and their internet usage. “The Ministry has prepared a set of regulations to control childrens cell phone usage as pornographic sites can easily be accessed through the device,” she reiterated. Yohana also emphasized on controlling the use of the electronic device in school. Students can be allowed to bring their cell phone to school, but should be prohibited from having it in class as it is irrelevant to teaching activities.
Furthermore, teachers have reported cases of students who sit in the back row and were caught playing with their cell phones, even accessing pornographic sites in class. “Not only in school, but all Indonesian kids should be protected from the negative impact of cell phone use both at school and home,” Yohana remarked. Blocking access to pornographic sites, she added, has not been as effective as it hoped to be. It does not mean that cell phones should be banned for children; controlled usage that is monitored by parents at home and teachers at school is tolerable. Choirul said it is best not to expose children to the gadget too early. A cell phone can have both
negative and positive functions and it is all in the hands of the user, children who are yet to become aware of its negative impact, should not be allowed to find out for themselves. “Depends on our intentions for using the device, we can get both positive and negative content. Depends on which one we intend to access,” he stated. Choirul also noted that children need to be informed and encouraged to use cell phones for positive activities instead of negative ones, which is why the roles of parents and teachers are very important. “Generally, children should not really be allowed to use cell phones as we worry that most of them will not use the device for positive things,” he concluded.(ant)
JAKARTA - The Regional Representative Council (DPD) has said will leave the case of alleged corruption involving its chairman to the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to resolve. “Responding to the press conference held by the KPK leadership after it had caught a DPD member red handed, we, the DPD leadership and members, are concerned about the case,” DPD Deputy Chief Farouk Muhammad stated at the parliament building here on Saturday evening. Farouk noted that the allegation that the DPD chief was involved in a bribery case has nothing to do with the functioning of the DPD. “The legal action taken by the KPK will not influence the DPD in carrying out its duties and we will continue to perform our obligations institutionally and individually, as expected,” he stressed. According to Farouk, the DPD leadership and members also called on all parties, particularly the elite, to respect the principle of presumption of innocence and not to link the alleged misdeeds by one DPD member to the role of the DPD. He also urged against any media trial and urged the media to uphold the due legal process while reporting the case. KPK Chairman Agus Rahardjo had earlier announced that the antigraft body had named the DPD chief, identified by his initials as IG, and two other people, identified by their initials as XSS and MNI, as suspects in an alleged case of corruption related to sugar import quota for West Sumatra.(ant)
Indonesia urges NAM to reiterate support for Palestine`s independence
JAKARTA - The Indonesian government urged every member of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) to continue to support the Palestinian people in their struggle to achieve independence. Such support should continue until Palestine becomes a sovereign nation with East Jerusalem as its capital, Indonesia stressed. The appeal was voiced by Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Retno LP Marsudi during a ministerial level meeting of the Palestine
Committee of NAM, held in Venezuela, on Friday, a press statement issued by the foreign ministry here on Saturday said. She also emphasized the importance of NAM member countries support for the resumption of the Palestinian peace process. The Indonesian government fully supports the French governments initiative to reopen the peace talks. Indonesia was one of the 28 countries that participated in the Paris Meeting held in June 2016.
The government also encourages civic society organizations to play a bigger role in strengthening support for the peace process. “Various processes and initiatives carried out for peace in Palestine must be supported,” the minister urged. She also remarked that a stronger international pressure is needed to stop Israel from committing further violence and human rights violations against Palestinian people. Israel must also stop construction of illegal resettlement in occupied
Palestinian land. “Israel must not be allowed to derive economic benefits from the occupied territory,” she noted. She also called for stronger solidarity with the Palestinians by providing more technical assistance to Palestine. Support to Palestine is one of the objectives of NAM. Therefore, Indonesia reiterates a call for NAM member agencies to continue to help Palestine achieve its full freedom. She particularly appealed to NAM members, who have not yet
recognized the Palestinian state, to accord their full recognition soon. The meeting on Palestine was attended by ministers from Indonesia, Algeria, Bangladesh, Colombia, Cuba, Egypt, India, Malaysia, Palestine, Senegal, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe. In the west of this waterfall sits the Melanting waterfall with the height of 41 meters. Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro has touted the 17th meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement as one that would “be remembered for centuries,” as the unpopular leftist seeks to bolster his international legitimacy. Yet the turnout from the 120nation Cold War-era bloc has paled compared to past meetings, including the previous summit in Iran in 2012, attended by some 35 heads of state. Zimbabwe’s Robert Mugabe, Iran’s Hassan Rouhani and Palestine’s Mahmoud Abbas, as well as regional allies from Cuba, Ecuador and Bolivia are among the few heads of states who have landed on the Caribbean island of Margarita. The half-century old movement formed by nations wanting to avoid aligning with the United States or Soviet Union has dwindled in relevance over the years.
But it appears that heads of states’ attendance at the summit in recession-stricken Venezuela is particularly low, possibly even in single digits, although the government did not respond to a request for a list of attendees. Venezuela’s opposition, vying to remove Maduro in a recall referendum, has jumped on low attendance as a sign of his isolation. “Millions of dollars of Venezuelans’ money spent for the government’s ego,” said opposition leader Henrique Capriles. “Many of the countries didn’t come to the show!” In one glaring absence, cofounder and key member India did not send Prime Minister Narendra Modi, only the second time the country’s head of state has missed a summit since its 1961 founding. Venezuela is undergoing a major economic crisis that has
sparked worsening food shortages and triple-digit inflation. Margarita was once known as the ‘Pearl of the Caribbean,’ a tourist hub that drew visitors from around the world, but hotel occupancy is under half what it was last year and some islanders recently humiliated Maduro by chasing him in a poor neighborhood, banging pots and pans. The delegates who did come complained privately of a lack of organization, delays and shabby hotels, despite Venezuela’s efforts to make Margarita shine by repainting roads, stocking supermarket shelves and boosting security on the crime-ridden island. BERLIN - German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservatives look set to suffer a second electoral blow in two weeks in a Berlin city vote on Sunday as voters are expected to express their unease with her refugee-friendly policy. The anti-immigrant Alternative for Germany (AfD) is expected to profit from a popular backlash over Merkel’s decision a year ago to keep German borders open for refugees and the party could enter its tenth regional assembly out of Germany’s 16 states. Voting in the German capital started at 8 a.m. (0600 GMT) and some 2.5 million people are eligible to decide who should represent them in the Berlin city assembly. Polling stations will close at 6 p.m. (1600 GMT) and public broadcasters will publish exit polls shortly afterwards. First projections are expected roughly half an hour later. BANGLI - Bangli district has so many waterfalls, but some have not been well-known in the ears of general public. One of them is the Malet Kuta Mesir located located at Malet Kuta Mesir hamlet, Tiga, Susut. In addition to exuding beauty, around the waterfall also sits a mud puddle believed to be good for health. It is believed to have the capability of curing various diseases. “In addition to the water at the patirtaan often used for purificatory ritual, the mud is taken advantage as a scrub. It is believed to cure various kinds of diseases,” said chief of Kuta Malet Mesir customary village, I Wayan Rana, Wednesday (Sep. 14). In addition to local residents, the efficacy offered by the springs and mud is also able to draw the attention of people from other regions such as Denpasar, Gianyar and Badung. In contrast to past time, parents would tell stories for their children at night before going to bed. “Now, it is rarely done. Very few parents tell story to their children before going to sleep,” he explained. One of the causes of the abandonment of storytelling tradition is the presence of technological development. For instance, varied entertainments presented on electronic media such as television makes parents, including children, reluctant to tell stories. “Busy activities of many parents today are quite time consuming so this has become the causes of the abandonment of this tradition,” he said.
In addition, Suardana also mentioned the other factor causing the abandonment of storytelling tradition by parents today is that many parents do not know about Balinese stories. It is aggravated by
their minimal interests in reading story books. According to Suardana, if only this storytelling tradition can be continuously passed on by parents, many benefits can be obtained from this activity. In addition to strengthening relationship between parents and children, added Suardana, it can also serve as a means of moral guidance and formation of character. Invite them to sing while playing or making something like a propeller made of paper. That’s why he said that corruptors may be the product of generation that never received any story of fairy tales from their parents. Prof. Dr. I Nyoman Dharma Putra, a laureate, confirmed that Balinese folklore is always feared to be extinct or marginalized. At the same time, Balinese folklore has always been promoted to be preserved because its values are considered important for the formation of character and preservation of intangible heritage as ethnic identity. In the context of character development, folklore should be promoted continuously through festival, mass media, audio-visual and YouTube. Folklore is the source of inspiration for modern literature, comics and art show. “When getting more worried about the extinction of the story, the dissemination and preservation efforts should be made more aggressively,” he said. AMLAPURA - The number of foreign travelers crossing to Gili islands in NTB such as the Gili Trawangan from Padangbai traditional harbor on Friday (Sep. 16) looked normal. This means that there is still crossing service after the explosion of the Gili Cat II fast boat on Thursday morning (Sep. 15) claiming two fatalities and injuring dozens. However, the traffic is not as busy as last August denoting the peak season of foreign tourist visit. One of the Padangbai residents often observing the crossing of foreign travelers to Gili Trawangan, Yuyun, said that the average travelers of this month reached hundreds of people or 500 per day, while in August reached 1,200 people per day.
When contacted in separate place, a legislator of the Karangasem House of Representatives, Nyoman Sartika, said that the number of crossing passenger reaches averagely 500 or more per day. All this time, he said, the government of Karangasem
has not been able to manage the traditional harbor used as crossing facilities to Gili Trawangan by foreign visitors, so that it gets nothing. “Harbor facilities and beach are used, but Karangasem can just watch,” he said. In the meantime, Chairman of the Karangasem House of Representatives, Nengah Sumardi, when contacted some time ago said that from the information obtained the daily average of foreign travelers crossing during peak season reached 1,200 people. Sartika asked the government of Karangasem to pay attention to the complaints of hotel management in Karangasem, and manage the traditional harbor as well arrange the objects and tourist attraction. LOS ANGELES - From presidents to serial killers, Oscar-winning filmmaker Oliver Stone hasn’t shied away from exploring controversial figures, but he initially balked when asked to make a film about former National Security Agency (NSA) contractor Edward Snowden. “I didn’t want to do it, I wasn’t looking for trouble,” Stone told Reuters. But the 70-year-old director, known for films such as “JFK,” “Natural Born Killers” and “Wall Street,” said he changed his mind after he met with Snowden in Russia. “Although I was worried about it still being boring and dull, I saw it as a dramatic thriller. I felt like it wouldn’t get an audience as a documentary-type film,” Stone said. “Snowden,” out in theaters on Friday, traces Snowden’s journey from a conservative CIA agent to a disillusioned NSA operative until he fled the United States in 2013 and exposed the government’s mass surveillance programs of ordinary people. Police rule out attack as cause of Bali boat explosion
BALI — Indonesian police said Friday there is no indication that a terror attack was the cause of a tourist boat explosion in Bali that killed two people and injured about 20 others. Karangasem district police chief Sugeng Sudarso said investigators believe a fuel leak below deck caused a buildup of fumes that ignited, though the finding is provisional. Sudarso and Bali police spokesman Made Sudana said there was no sign of terrorism and a bomb squad did not find any explosive materials. Investigators have recovered body parts and continue to examine the boat, Sudarso said. The inccident was killing two women on board About 20 people were injured

The investigation is not only done by police but also by the Padangbai harbor authority. Chief of the Padangbai harbor authority, I Ketut Gede Sudarma, said on Friday (Sep. 16) that his office has made initial investigation a few moments after the blast. Skipper of the Gili Cat II fast boat is threatened with severe sanctions. Sudarma asserted that apart from the Padangbai harbor authority, the
initial investigation was also helped by two personnel from the Ministry of Transportation. Some parties having been undergoing related examination are the skipper of Gili Cat II, Totok Warito, the boat crews such as Sugiarto (chief engineer), Nyoman Supartika (deckhand) and Kadek Kris (deckhand). GM of Gili Cat II already underwent the examination, too. After the examination, Sudarma asserted that he is preparing preliminary investigation report (BAPP). He was reluctant to reveal the results of initial investigation of the harbor authority.
These results will be submitted to the Admiralty Court at the Ministry of Transportation. Admiralty Court has the task to carry out further investigation on ship accident.
