Hollywood classic “Ben-Hur” gets modern remake

LOS ANGELES - “Ben-Hur”, the 1959 movie epic that won 11 Oscars, has received a Hollywood revamp -- but its makers say the famed chariot race still relies on humans and horses, not special effects. “Boardwalk Empire” actor Jack Huston takes on the role for which the late Charlton Heston was named Best Actor, playing the young Jewish noble Judah Ben-Hur, who is sent into slavery by Roman occupiers but returns to take his revenge. “If you think about the climate of the world today -- and this movie is

set 2,000 years ago -- you realise the world hasn’t changed that much,” Huston said at the film’s Tuesday premiere. “Being a beautiful action movie with all of the thrills and excitement, it’s still a very serious movie for our time.” Producer Mark Burnett said that

RIO DE JANEIRO - Ahmad Tontowi and Liliyana Natsir celebrated Indonesia’s national day with a “gift” of a gold medal to their country after hammering Malaysia’s Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying in the badminton mixed doubles final on Wednesday. Roared to the title by dozens of feverish home fans, the world number three pairing pounced all over the Malaysians from the first point at the Riocentro and never dropped the pressure in the 21-14 21-12 win. “It’s a process, in the sense that the government has just mentioned in the 2014-2019 Strategic Plan. So, at least in the mid-term, the direction of human resources development is like that,” said the Rector of Udayana University, Prof. Dr. Ketut Suastika, responding to the declaration of the Year of Innovation when met at the Udayana University, at the Bukit Jimbaran Campus, Badung. Suastika added that research is indeed one of the ways to make innovation. Research is further divided into the one having something to do with basic and applied sciences. Results of the applied sciences in particular can be immediately utilized for community. Furthermore, they are also important for the future

competitiveness of this nation. “One of the measures for the innovation is the patent rights or intellectual property rights. Indonesia is still very small and when even compared to Singapore with the population of only 3 million. It has far more patent rights, whereas the population of Indonesia has the population amounting to 250 million,” he explained. According to Suastika, the more patent rights in Indonesia, the more new innovations will be created in this country. On that account, it is important for Indonesia to pursue patents through innovative researches. But so far, budget issues are most frequently faced in the implementation of research. “Indeed it will be back again. Actually it is not always like that but people will think if the budge is insufficient. If declared insuf-

ficient, it’s always insufficient, no matter how much will be given. But most importantly, the atmosphere, academic atmosphere and research atmosphere should be developed in the institutions (university—Ed),” he added. In the Udayana University itself, said Suastika, his authority continues to increase the research funding or the research from the university earnings. From only 5 percent, it rises to 10 percent and will rise again to 15 percent next year. This is done to encourage lecturers and students to produce innovative research, particularly in the field of applied sciences. In the meantime, Minister of Research, Technology and Higher Education, Mohammad Nasir, said that the declaration of the Year of Innovation is expected to immedi-

But it should be able to make a breakthrough where technology and innovation become the driving force of development. “The number and quality of researchers and innovators in universities and research institutions need to be improved, in addition to the quality of research, scientific publications and the number of patents obtained as well as the innovations produced,” he said in a speech written on the 71st celebration of the Independence Day. According to Nasir, the government’s commitment to improving the performance of research and innovation will continue to be improved. It is especially in terms of rules and regulations, financing and

investment enhancement, quality improvement and rejuvenation of laboratory as well as scholarships for researchers. He hoped that the innovative products produced can provide answers to a variety of challenges faced by this nation such as forest fires, traffic congestion, climate change, reform of the bureaucracy, infrastructural development and so on. “In the current globalization era, Indonesia is faced with the challenge on the emergence of free competition in trade among the nations. This free competition will cause Indonesia to be invaded by a wide range of new products and technologies from other countries. Pemuteran, An ancient and unique village having nine Dalem Temples

PEMUTERAN customary village, Rendang, Karangasem, is classified as one of the ancient villages in Karangasem. This village has a number of unique traditions. Traditions at the village remain to be preserved and implemented up to these days. The village having fertile areas has nine Dalem Temples. When a ceremony or pujawali is held at the temple, said one of local village leaders, I Ketut Rasta, no higher priests or sulinggih are involved to officiate over the rituals. Residents organizing the ritual are just enough to invoke holy water at Bujangga Temple located in the upstream area of the village. With the sprinkles of holy water invoked at the Tirta Bujangga Temple, it is unnecessary to perform worship and invoke holy water to higher priests. The ritual is only officiated over by priest of local temple by means of the holy water sprinkles of the Tirta Bujangga Temple. Other than such uniqueness, added Rasta, the tradition remaining to be preserved until now is the tradition of marriage. Process of the marriage ceremony includes a tradition named the maserah sampi. Series of the wedding ceremony is started with proposing where the party of bridegroom proposes the bride to her parents accompa-

nied by his families. As usual in the proposing, the bridegroom is accompanied by his parents and family. After the proposing, the bride is invited to the house of the bridegroom and resumed with mekala-kalaan (purificatory rite) of the couple prior to starting their household life. After the core ceremony of the wedding, the couple is allowed to enter into the Pura Desa temple area when they have performed the maserah sampi. It is a procession where the groom party hands over a bull with the horns of reaching around 12 cm. The bull is handed over to the village accompanied with pejati oblation. By the village consisting of 104 households, the bull is then slaughtered and the meat is distributed to local villagers. On certain ceremonies, there are times for the couple to perform makandal procession at Pura Desa temple. At that time, should there be some newly married couples having not performed the makandal procession, they can do it

simultaneously. When holding the makandal, the couples are hanging in the pejahitan pavilion at Penataran village. The next procession is megat balai agung. Rasta and local headman I Wayan Suana said that hanging on pejahitan pavilion (a pavilion used to arrange oblations) where the new couples are expected to be ready take socio-religious responsibility of the village after getting married by doing selfpurificatory rite. Pemuteran customary village at Pempatan administrative village is the westernmost village in Karangasem district. Pemuteran village is bordered with forest area of Kintamani, Bangli. Pemuteran village is classified into a village of struggle. This village, precisely located at Linjong Temple, right in the middle of the forest, was once used as hideaway of the young warriors led by I Gusti Ngurah Rai when holding a long march to East Bali so as to give self-confidence to all Balinese people that the RI has got the independence and owned its troops. However, when arriving at Pemuteran the colonial troops coming with the well-armed Netherlands Indies Civil Administration (NICA)

Stylewatch: Guy Bourdin’s glamorous girls inspire Christian Louboutin

THE shoe brand’s latest adverts pay tribute to the sex and edge of the French fashion photographer. But are they too retro? Throughout the 70s and 80s, Guy Bourdin took pictures of women and, sometimes, parts of women. These images were surreal, glamorous, ghostly, graphic (in both senses), witty and sexy. The women were anonymous, and often dressed in swimsuits, occasionally with tights as well. They had props:

telephones, teddy bears, beds, dolphins, bus stops. More often than not, their shoes were at the centre of the images. This is because Bourdin, who took pictures for Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, was also employed by shoe brand Charles Jourdan from the mid60s, and he produced their ad campaigns until the early 80s. It is these images, understandably, that Christian Louboutin pays homage to with the images for

his own advertising campaign this season. In one, we see a girl crouching in green tights and blue platforms, with the image cropped at her waist in a Bourdinian manner. In another, one girl – wearing a leopard print leotard and glitter tights – lies back, with a fish-netted leg, complete with platform, across her in the foreground. Yet another sees the same girl again on her back with her legs folded up to her chest and her face

obscured, but a set of striped ankle boots plain for all to see. In a route one way, this influence makes a lot of sense – the purpose of both sets of images is to create striking pictures that put shoes in the centre. Louboutin has always veered on the

side of showgirl style – he even dabbles with the trapeze – so Bourdin’s glossy, scantily clad aesthetic was always going to appeal. The photographer’s work, particularly since last year’s exhibition at Somerset House, is a reference that appeals in a wider fashion moment that is all about the 70s and 80s party girl. This season’s Louboutin designs, called Oh You Pretty Things, have a 70s feel. (IBP/net)

Expert describes characteristics of pedophile

Perpetrator looks bountiful to make victims happy

DENPASAR — The case regarding to pedophilia with the defendant Robert Andrew Fiddes Ellis was on trial Tuesday (Aug. 16). The defendant was about to present alleviating witness, but the witness known as the defendant’s host did not come to the Denpasar District Court. In the meantime, the expert of the prosecutor described a number of characteristics and behaviors of a person leading to pedophilia. One of the fundamental characteristics of the perpetrator is targeting the poor area and behaves like a generous person so that he is positioned as a ‘hero’ and tries to approach the family (especially parents of the victims) and makes them happy. Indeed, one of the experts originally presented by the prosecutor did not attend the trial, but his statement was read. Another expert was Luh Suryani. The report was read out by prosecutor Purwanti Murtiasih et al. According to the expert, explained Purwanti, the characteristics of a pedophile lies in the defendant Robert. Prosecutor said, for example, the perpetrator provides something for potential victims and their families. “The perpetrator also comes to the pockets of the poor,” said Purwanti. Other characteristic, added Purwanti, a pedophile is trying to make the victim happy. In the eyes of the victims, pedophile is consid-

ered as a kind of generous person. Therefore, the kids will like the perpetrator. Prosecutor stated that almost all of the characteristics of pedophile can be found in the figure of Robert. “Children are screened some films. According to Yanuar, the expert witness is only describing the figure of pedophile scientifically, but is not based on the evidence of medical report. “Almost all the results of medical report do not reveal any signs of sexual abuse and promiscuity,” said Yanuar. Ardhana, the victim’ brother-inlaw (brother of the victim’s wife) stated that at the time of incident the victim was indeed on duty. His family did not have any feelings regarding the accident. “There were no unusual expressions, too, because he (the victim) said goodbye as usual,” said Ardhana who also works as a policeman in the Denpasar Police, equally having been serving for 35 years. At the time of incident, the victim asked for permission to purchase food due to being hungry while on duty. He did not think if such incident would occur. This man from Kelan, Jimbaran,

left two sons. The first son of the victim has been working while the second son is still attending higher education at Undiksha. “Immediately he will be graduating,” he added. Family is worried about performing an autopsy. “We’re not going to do an autopsy. Probably it will turn useless, let the police handle it,” he said. Since there are ceremonies taking place at Kelan for two days, his body can only be sent to the funeral home after two days. Ni Ketut Arsini, 54, the victim’s wife, said that she had no feelings before her husband died. “He goes home from workplace

In the meantime, the results of external examination by Sanglah Hospital Forensic Medicine indicate there are some open wounds on the face and head. “There are some bruises on the face and head,” said Dudut Rustyadi, the Head of Forensic Medicine Department of Sanglah Hospital. External examination conducted at 06:15 also found bruises on the victim’s arms and abrasions on the face. From the injuries found, he concluded if the victim suffered violence due to blunt object, while no injuries by sharp object were found. In Ubud, flag raising ceremony held in cultural nuance

GIANYAR — Different atmosphere was strikingly seen during the celebration of the Independence Day of the RI at Ubud tourism village, Wednesday (Aug. 17). The ceremony was held in customary attires accompanied with gamelan music accompaniment. As a result, this culture-nuanced ceremony drew the attention of hundreds of visitors.

As observation, no marching band was found in the ceremony held at the Ubud Public Square using the entire gamelan accompaniment. Thus, the flag raising ceremony with chanting of the Indonesia Raya anthem took place with Balinese gamelan music. Additionally, podium of the ceremony inspector and reading of the proclamation and Pancasila text was decorated in such a way with Balinese umbrellas. “We want the local potential is also featured to take part in this historic day,” said Cokorda Ngurah Suyadnya. As a result, the red and white flag ceremony coming with cultural nuances successfully drew the attention of hundreds of foreign travelers. SYDNEY - The premier of Western Australia state, a member of Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s Liberal Party, has offered to accept refugees from Australian-funded detention centres amid growing concern about conditions for the 1,350 people held in the camps. Under Australian law, anyone intercepted trying to reach the country by boat is sent for processing to asylum seeker camps on the tiny Pacific island of Nauru or to Manus Island off Papua New Guinea. They are never eligible to be resettled in Australia. HANOI - Vietnam has banned players of the game Pokemon Go from the offices of its government and ruling Communist Party, besides defense locations, as thousands of its citizens get swept up in the frenzy to capture virtual cartoon characters. Hundreds of thousands of players have downloaded the game since its Aug. 6 launch in Vietnam, with many annotating the Google version of the country’s map to aid their quest, the Information and Communications Ministry said in a statement. The game is not licensed, however, and people should not play it “near or inside the areas of offices of the Communist Party, the state, the military and national defense sites and other restricted areas”, the ministry said late on Wednesday. Players engrossed in the game may run into trouble in spots such as railways, highways, airports, rivers, lakes and mountains, apart from the risk of losing personal information, the ministry added. “Playing Pokemon Go while in traffic causes more bad than good influence on people,” Captain Nguyen Minh Duc of the Hanoi traffic police told an online forum on Thursday. “Traffic rule breakers do not only cause harm to themselves but also affect others.” Pokemon Go uses augmented reality and Google mapping to make animated characters appear in the real world, overlaid on the nearby landscape viewed through players’ mobile phone cameras. The game has prompted safety warnings after players glued to their phones stumbled, were robbed or wandered into dangerous places. Currency volatility wanes, boding well for risk-taking

LONDON - A flood of central bank cash and the prospect of more to come has crushed volatility in the foreign exchange market, prompting investors to seek higher returns in riskier currencies.

The drop in market measures of how sharp exchange rate swings will be has emboldened investors and encouraged appetite for emerging country currencies and, in developed markets, the Australian and New Zealand dollars. A key driver of this collapse has been expectations that monetary policy will remains loose for a while yet. The Bank of England and the Australian and New Zealand central banks have cut interest rates in recent weeks and, despite warnings from officials, the U.S. Federal Reserve seems in no hurry to hike. “Investors who go by macro-economic fundamentals are on the sidelines because there is an expectation that the Federal Reserve will probably not raise until December,” said Manuel Oliveri, currency strategist at Credit Agricole. If the U.S. rate outlook were to change or political or economic risks jangled investors’ nerves, volatility would quickly return. Until then, they are happy to take risks. “Sure, political and geo-political risks are lurking, but volatility is lower and that is positive for higher-yielding currencies like the Australian dollar and will keep the dollar capped,” Oliveri added. The dollar index hit its lowest in seven weeks on Tuesday, while the high-yielding Australian dollar trades near its highest in four months. Even the New Zealand dollar hit a one-year high despite the Reserve Bank’s rate cut last week, highlighting investors’ search for higher yields. With policy rates in most developed economies like Japan, the euro zone and Britain are close to zero, Australia on 1.5 percent and New Zealand on 2 percent are attractive. BEIJING - China home prices rose 0.8 percent in July nationwide, but stalled or fell in more cities than in June, adding to concerns that one of the economy’s key growth drivers is losing steam but offering some relief for policymakers worried about property bubbles. A robust recovery in home prices and sales gave a strongerthan-expected boost to the world’s second-largest economy in the first

half of the year, helping to offset stubbornly weak exports. However, some analysts say slowing price growth and weakening property investment suggest the rebound may have peaked, as more local governments tighten restrictions on home purchases in a bid to keep fast-rising prices in check. Average new home prices in China’s 70 major cities rose 7.9

percent in July from a year earlier, an official survey showed on Thursday, accelerating from a 7.3 percent increase in June. Monthly trends, however, painted a somewhat weaker picture. July home prices rose at the same pace as in June, which was the slowest since April, according to a Reuters calculation based on data issued by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

And, out of the 70 cities surveyed, prices stalled or fell on a monthly basis in 19 cities in July, compared to 15 in June. Home prices in first- and secondtier cities continued to see eye-popping annual gains, with southern boomtown Shenzhen and coastal Xiamen rising the most at 40.9 percent and 39.2 percent, respectively from a year earlier. Worried by sharp price rises, a

growing number of more affluent cities have tightened home purchasing restrictions in recent months most recently Nanjing and Suzhou - including introducing measures to raise the down-payment ratio for second mortgages. Cities that have seen the biggest drop in prices include Dandong and Mudanjiang, situated respectively in China’s rustbelt Liaoning and Heilongjiang province.(rtr)

MANILA — A second Indonesian sailor escaped from Abu Sayyaf militants in the southern Philippines on the same day his colleague swam to freedom after almost two months in captivity, officials said Thursday. Ismail, the chief officer of a tugboat whose seven crewmen were abducted near Philippine waters in June, was recovered by troops Wednesday along a road in southern Jolo Island’s Luuk town, said Maj. Filemon Tan, a regional military spokesman. “Military troops were scouring the area looking for other Indonesian hostages when they found Ismail, who identified himself to the military as a kidnap victim,” Tan said. Mohammad Safyan, another sailor from the same tugboat named Charles, ran and swam to freedom earlier Wednesday after the militants threatened to behead him, Tan said. Villagers in Luuk found him floating and trapped in fishnets along shore in a mangrove area. Tan said the men escaped together,

but fled in separate ways as their captors chased them. It is not uncommon for hostages to try to escape, but very few succeed in such daring missions because they are unfamiliar with terrain and don’t speak the local language. Sixteen other foreign hostages — nine Indonesians, five Malaysians, one Norwegian, and a Dutchman — are still held by the violent Muslim extremist group that has become notorious for ransom kidnappings and beheadings of hostages in the predominantly Roman Catholic nation. At least five Filipinos

are also being held captive. Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines agreed in May to carry out coordinated patrols following a series of kidnappings of Indonesian sailors and piracy attacks that have undermined commerce in the region. A total of 24 Indonesian crewmen of tugboats and barges have been kidnapped by the Abu Sayyaf this year, highlighting weak security in the Celebes Sea that borders Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines. Ten of the hostages were freed after ransoms were reportedly paid. The Philippines says it has stepped up a military offensive against the militants, who earlier this year beheaded two Canadian hostages. Australia, Indonesia partners since RI`s independence: Ambassador

JAKARTA - The Australian Ambassador to Indonesia, Paul Grigson, has said Australia has been Indonesias partner since it represented the Republic of Indonesia (RI) at the Committee of Good Offices for Indonesia. The statement came in response to President Joko Widodo (Jokowi)s state speech on August 16, 2016 marking the 71st commemoration of Indonesia’s Independence Day on August 17, 2016. “The relationship between Australia and Indonesia has had its ups and downs, but the foundation will always be strong,” the ambassador stated. This strong foundation, Grigson reminded, was established when Indonesia chose Australia as its representative at the Committee, together with Belgium (representing the Netherlands) and the United States (the neutral side). The Committee was formed by the United Nations to mediate the dispute between Indonesia and the Netherlands after the Dutch colonial masters carried out Military Aggression I in 1947. “Since the beginning, Indonesia chose to have a dialogue to resolve the conflicts,” the ambassador added. Yet, the Committee was considered a failure because the Dutch launched a second military aggression on December 19-20, 1948 that led to the UN establishing the United Nations Commission for Indonesia (UNCI). Since then, Grigson underlined, Australia always supported Indonesia in every negotiation to defend its independence, including at the Dutch-Indonesian Round Table Conference on August 22-November 2, 1949 in which Australia was the mediator, representing the UNCI. The conference became a stepping stone to Indonesias success in achieving independence as the Netherlands agreed to cede sovereignty to Indonesia by the end of December 1949. Today, after 71 years of independence, Grigson noted that the relationship between Indonesia and Australia is even stronger through cooperation in various fields, including people-to-people contact. “The networking between the Indonesians and the Australians will make our relationship stronger,” he stressed. In the multilateral arena, Indonesia and Australia are the co-chairs at the Bali Process, a continuing dialogue to address issues of human trafficking and illegal migration. Indonesia and Australia, together with South Africa, form the troika in the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA). At the international level, Indonesia and Australia are actively sending their peacekeeping forces for accomplishing the UN peace missions in conflict areas. “Indonesia is a great country and I believe it will become greater and greater in the future,” Ambassador Grigson hoped.(ant)

The body of Ibrahim, who is believed to have come from Uighur in China, is now still in Poso Pesisir but will soon be moved to Poso. Sufahriadi noted that four foreigners were earlier on the wanted list,

and with Ibrahims death, there were no others left. He said Ibrahim was killed following a shootout at 3:35 a.m. local time in the hilly region of Padopi, which is located in proximity to a village in Poso Pesisir. The two wanted individuals, including Ibrahim, were involved in a gunfight, but the other managed to escape, he added.

Sufahriadi declined to reveal further details on the group of individuals owing to fears that it would disrupt the operation. “I would not disclose (further information), but regardless of how many they are, I will continue to chase them,” he remarked. He said following the gunfight, the team involved in the operation secured a self-made bomb, which

had been hurled at security personnel but failed to explode. “The guns were taken away by the person who managed to flee,” he revealed. He said the gunfight broke out after intelligence information was received on the whereabouts of the persons. “The information was true, but the men immediately launched an attack by throwing a bomb,” he added.(ant)

Southern California wildfire rages unchecked after evacuations LOS ANGELES - A Southern California wildfire raged virtually unchecked in thick brush on Wednesday after destroying dozens of houses near a highway corridor between Los Angeles and Las Vegas and forcing as many as 80,000 residents to flee their homes, officials said. The so-called Blue Cut Fire ignited on Tuesday in the mountainous Cajon Pass and has exploded to cover 25,626 acres (10,370 hectares). Firefighters had carved containment lines around only four percent of the blaze by Wednesday night, fire officials said. They described the blaze as unusually fierce, even for a year of intense wildfires in the U.S. West, where years of drought have placed a heavy burden on firefighting resources. “In my 40 years of fighting fire, I’ve never seen fire behavior so extreme as it was yesterday,” Michael Wakoski, the incident commander on the fire, told a news conference on Wednesday. were burning in California on Wednesday, three of them scorching thousands of acres as firefighters sought help from emergency responders from other states and the California National Guard. U.S. government forecasters have said Southern California faces a potential threat from major wildfires until December, given the dryness and warm weather. Trump hires ‘street fighter’ in new shakeup of White House campaign

NEVADA - U.S. Republican Donald Trump overhauled his presidential campaign team on Wednesday for the second time in less than two months, hiring the head of a conservative news website to bolster his combative image and try to reverse poor opinion poll numbers. Trump named Steve Bannon, head of the Breitbart News website, as campaign chief executive officer, a new position. He also promoted senior adviser Kellyanne Conway to the post of campaign manager. The latest shake-up combines Bannon, a conservative flamethrower, with Conway, a measured, data-driven analyst who might be able to broaden Trump’s appeal to women and independent voters. It offers Trump’s team a chance to return to the “let Trump be Trump” style practiced by former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski that helped Trump, who has never held elective office, win the Republican presidential nomination for the Nov. 8 election. Lewandowski, ousted in the last campaign reorganization in June, said on CNN that Bannon was “a street fighter” like himself. BANGLI - Dalem Balingkang Temple situated in a remote area at the northern side of Lake Batur an on the eastern part of Penulisan Hill, some 40 kms from Bangli Town, precisely in Pinggan Village, Kinatamani District. The place is easy to reach with vehicles. Reaching the parking area, then, a guest should go on foot for some 500 meters to reach the temple. The word Balingkang translates King of Bali. The temple once served as the palace for the King of Bali. Based on folklore, in the 11th century, there was a king named Sri Kesari Waradewa who had a Chinese wife, a pricess of Chung Dynasty, Tang Ci Keng. The marriage between the two was told in Barong Landung Dance that still can be seen in Bali to date. Even the palace it self has been influenced by Chinese design and architectural styles, among others, the building of Gedong Mas and Pelinggih Ida Ratu Ayu. Brazil police pull U.S. swimmers from flight amid robbery probe

RIO DE JANEIRO - Brazilian police stopped two U.S. Olympic swimmers from boarding a flight home on Wednesday to question them about how they and two team mates were robbed at gunpoint in Rio de Janeiro at the weekend, after a judge raised doubts over their accounts. A third swimmer, James Feigen, is in contact with Brazilian authorities and plans to make further statements to them on Thursday, said a spokesman for the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC). Federal police also want to question U.S. gold medallist swimmer Ryan Lochte, one of swimming’s most decorated Olympians, but he had already flown home to the United States on Monday, a police spokesman said. The four swimmers have said they were robbed by gunmen while returning to the Athletes’ Village in a taxi in the early hours of Sunday after a party - an incident that stoked fears for the safety of athletes and visitors at South America’s first Games. The Rio Olympics have been dogged by a series of security scares, including the robbery of two visiting government ministers, a mugger being shot dead outside the opening ceremony and stray bullets being fired into the equestrian centre. On Wednesday, The Guardian newspaper reported that a British team member had been held up at gunpoint while enjoying a night out in Rio in the early hours of Tuesday. The person was not seriously hurt, the newspaper added. However, in the case of the four swimmers, police sources have said investigators have not found any evidence so far to back up their accounts. RIO DE JANEIRO - Mo Farah survived another stumble to battle through to the final of the 5,000 metres on Wednesday as the Briton remained on course for a prized Olympic distance ‘double-double’. Farah recovered from a fall to win the 10,000 gold last weekend and almost went down again on the last lap of his heat in the shorter race after being clipped by American Hassan Mead, who did fall and missed out on qualification. An initial appeal by the Americans was rejected but a second plea, offering new video evidence, was accepted and Mead was installed in the field for Saturday’s final. Farah is seeking to become the second man after Finland’s Lasse Viren in 1976 to retain both the

5,000m and 10,000m titles but said he still felt the strain of the longer race in his legs during Wednesday’s run in 32 degrees Celsius heat. “It’s hot, I’ve just got to recover... I haven’t recovered (from the 10,000m) as well as I’d wanted,” Farah said. “I got clipped, I just had to stay on my feet. But now I just have to recover, chill in my room.” Farah just about retained his balance after his stumble to qualify safely in a heat won by Ethiopian Hagos Gebrhiwet, who is likely to be one of his chief rivals in the final. Gebrhiwet, 22, missed the 10,000m to concentrate his efforts on the shorter race after taking silver and bronze behind Farah over 5,000 in the last two world

championships. Dejen Gebremeskel, who took silver to Farah’s gold in the London Olympics and also skipped the 10,000 in Rio, is also likely to challenge in the final, and qualified safely from the second heat. Paul Chelimo, who switched allegiance from Kenya after joining the U.S. army, was the fastest qualifier, running a personal best 13 minutes 19.54 seconds, while another Kenyan-turned-American Bernard Lagat, appearing in his fifth Olympics, also advanced. The 41-year-old Lagat won a bronze for Kenya in the 1500m at Sydney in 2000 and a silver in the same event in Athens four years later before he became an American citizen in 2005. (rtr)

BARCELONA — Arda Turan scored two goals before Lionel Messi added a third as Barcelona beat Sevilla 3-0 on Wednesday to win the Spanish Super Cup with a 5-0 victory on aggregate. Turan, who struggled to find his stride last season, continued to fill in successfully for Neymar while the Brazil star plays at the Rio Olympics. The Turkey midfielder scored from Messi’s pass in the 10th minute before striking from long range two minutes after halftime. His goals at Camp Nou followed his excellent assist for Luis Suarez in the 2-0 first-leg win. Messi headed Barcelona’s third in the 55th, his first goal this season. Barcelona finished with 10 men after Javier Mascherano asked to be substituted with 10 minutes left and after coach Luis Enrique had made all three changes. Messi, sporting his new diedblond hairdo, raised the trophy after the final whistle. Barcelona added the minor title to last season’s Spanish league and Copa del Rey titles to complete its haul for 2016. It was Barcelona’s eighth title of a possible ten under Luis Enrique.

“I feel very fortunate to have these players, they don’t stop surprising me,” Luis Enrique said. “We like winning all the trophies we can.
