The bombings were the deadliest in a series of attacks across Iraq Sunday that were aimed at the Sons of Iraq, a Sunni group also known as Sahwa that works with government forces to fight al-Qaida in Iraq. The attacks highlighted the stiff challenges the country faces as the U.S. scales back its forces in Iraq, leaving their Iraqi counterparts in charge of security. The first attack Sunday morning — the deadliest against Iraq’s security forces in months — claimed at least 43 lives. It occurred at a checkpoint near a military base where Sahwa members were lined up to receive paychecks in the mostly Sunni district of Radwaniya southwest of Baghdad. At least six of the dead were Iraqi soldiers, 34 were Sahwa members and three were accountants, according to hospital and police officials. A fishing vessel capsized in Mariveles, Bataan, on July 15, 2010. HANOI – Three people were missing in Vietnam as tropical storm Conson hit the country, officials said Sunday, after leaving 68 dead in the Philippines when it roared in as a typhoon. A woman went missing in the north of Vietnam and two fishermen disappeared in waters off the impoverished central provinces, an official in Hanoi from the national committee to fight storms and flooding told AFP. Conson swept onto the shores of Vietnam late on Saturday and was downgraded to a tropical depression, the official said. “It continues to cause rainfall in parts of northern and central regions. We have not yet been
able to calculate the amount of damage,” he said, but added the storm “has destroyed basic infrastructure, especially water works”. Thousands of Vietnamese soldiers have been mobilised to help people living in areas affected by Conson and about 30,000 people were evacuated before the storm blew in. Conson slammed into the Philippines on Tuesday, directly hitting the capital Manila as it cut westward into the South China Sea with a ferocity that caught weather forecasters by surprise. Most domestic violence in Karangasem, followed by child seizure Amlapura (Bali Post) -
Domestic violence (KDRT) is the highest case in Karangasem. During within these six months, there were 30 cases of reported domestic violence, and then in the second position was the case of seizure of child custody right. Counselor at the Integrated Service Center for Women and Children Empowerment (P2TP2A), Nyoman Suparni, last Saturday (Jul 17), said in Karangasem that high domestic violence indicated the low understanding on legal knowledge, especially the law on Elimination of Domestic Violence, and high level of economic difficulty. Background of domestic violence was generally triggered by household bicker due to problems related to economic difficulties. In addition, household bicker because of economic difficulty was also kindled by high rates of early marriage, among them on account of too free association or recognized as married by accident (MBA). According to Suparni, based on her counseling experience in
handling such cases, many couples could be successfully conciliated and some ended to the divorce. Divorce rate was also high in Karangasem. Within the past six months, the divorce reached 25 cases. As a result, the divorce then led to another new problem, namely seizure of child custody right. Other apprehensive impact of this condition was that domestic violence or divorce also made the children become the victims getting less parental attention. It consequently had an impact on the occurrence of juvenile delinquency where under age children had dared to steal, commit rape, fornication or sexual harassment. Within the past six months, there were 10 case reports on sexual abuse such as rape, abduction of under age girl accompanied by
sexual abuse and incest as happened at Perasan Hamlet, Ban Village, Kubu. “The high sexual harassment cases especially against the under age children was caused by the drawback of knowledge on legal affairs of the society, especially of the poor families living in remote and barren rural areas like in the mountains of Kubu. This urgently requires intensive legal counseling program. There must be volunteers that seriously dedicated themselves for the program, not just talk,” she explained. Water Crisis

On the other hand, Chief of Tamansari Hamlet, West Tianyar, Kubu, Gede Daryana, said in this month residents in the area had started to face clean water crisis. Residents having money began to buy clean water from suppliers using tank truck, especially when residents held a ceremony requiring much water such as for weddings, ngaben cremation or temple anniversary. He highlighted the artesian wells in the region created a dozen of years ago, until now they were redundant because they could not be taken advantage. “Our residents asked government to provide assistance in the form of pump machinery and piping for the artesian well. Its water debit is large enough, but until now they are still redundant,” he said. (013)

One of the activities that can strengthen the national identity and character formation is through history namely by making a visit and introducing them to sites having historical values. Thus, the Head of Historical Agency and Traditional Values Conservation (BPSNT) for Bali, NTB and NTT Region, Made Purna, revealed last Friday (Jul 16) in a series of historical excursion to Nusa Penida taking place on July 12-15, 2010. “Historical excursion plays an important role in strength-
ening the identity and formation of national character. Therefore, these activities can build collective memories of the community, especially the memory containing positive elements. By making a visit to an object having historical values, the students and teachers of history can prove really in the field things obtained from textbooks in school,” said Purna. Furthermore, he said the understanding on the values of history needed improving. History was not merely a series of year dates and events. However, it contained the values that could strengthen the identity. By understanding historical values one would be able to understand about his identity. By learning history, one would also be wiser and able to reflect on the past time for taking action
in the present time and determining the future planning. Nusa Penida was chosen as the destination of the historical excursion, said Purna, because the region was proved to have a substantial role in the development of Balinese history. “Historical visit to Nusa Penida has strategic meaning as a forum for strengthening the identity of the national generation. Identity is the nature, characteristic or sign representing and distinguishing an individual, a community or a nation from another,” he added. Such historical excursion was followed by high school and vocational students and teachers of history from Bali, West Nusa Tenggara and East Nusa Tenggara, and local community leaders. Participants of excursion
from different tribes and religions mingled and coalesced together in traditional Balinese attires. It posed one of the implications confirming that the national character of Indonesia consisting of various tribes and religions could be fused in unity. “With an increasingly profound understanding on identity, we expect it could strengthen the identity and consequently form the character of the nation having its own characteristics and peculiarities. The more young generations understanding about his identity will lead to stronger characters of the nation so as to maintain the integrity of the archipelagic nation with diverse ethnicities, religions and cultures,” he observed. In the meantime, the destinations visited comprised the Japa-
nese Cave, Batu Medawu Temple, Tunjuk Pusuh Temple, Pucak Mundi Temple and Penataran Ped Temple. The destination visited in the area should not necessarily have a historical legacy in the form of objects or monuments. However, they should have intangible nature (not merely relics in the form of object). The visit made to such destination was based on consideration where its existence was closely related to the history of Nusa Penida itself and its role in the history of Bali. For example, Japanese Cave along with cannons in Nusa Penida indicated that Japan considered Nusa Penida as strategic place to build a fortress against the attacks of Allies. (08)

Self Fight to Find Children’s Body BULELENG - Can’t be imagine how disturbed Wayan Ketia’s heart when he’s sure his two children Ketut Satya (30) and Komang Leni (25) died after drinking poison then sank themselves in Buyan Lake. He couldn’t do much to find them straight away but as a villager and underprivileged he couldn’t get access for help. Even police couldn’t understand what his feelings were. So what did Kertia and his family did to find the bodies? ON Wednesday (14/7) afternoon when Kertia was sure his children sank in the lake, he asked the police to ask the SAR (search and rescue distress) team to help as he saw them who helped people from disasters on TV. But the police who work at Pospol Pancasari was scaring him instead. “I was scared, they say if the SAR team couldn’t find the bodies, they will take me to the police as I gave a fake statement,” Kertia explained. So this option was not taken. He then tried to find a diver who’s at Candi Kuning area, Baturiti, Tabanan. But again it disappointed him as he has to pay IDR 2 million and that is too much for him as he has to pay it even the bodies were not found, “Where can we find IDR 2 million, it’s hard enough to find for daily meals.” Kertia and his family then fearlessly went to find the bodies themselves believed to be on the bottom of the lake. Yet it had to be delayed it was night so they only can stay at the side of the like wonders his two children’s body
on the bottom. They stayed on the side all night and wanted to stay over yet the police did not let them with a reason they could do uncertain things which can cause problems. At last, Kertia and his family went to their board walled house. His children kept crying and he controlled his sadness. That night, Kertia swore, if Satya and Leni healthily coming home holding hands that night, he is okay if Ida Sang Hyang Widhi (God in Hindu) will take his life, yet they did not come home. The next day Thursday (15/7), since the morning Kertia and his family went back to the lake. They tried everything to find and take the bodies but it was unsuccessful. At last they had a unique idea, by having bamboo being tied and the end was used to feel the bottom of the lake and this bamboo was then pulled by a boat. After a while, it caught Satya and Leni’s bodies which then was then pulled out, “luckily the two children was hugging each other and tied
their arms with a jacket, so in one go we found the two bodies straight away.” Buried
After kept for two days and two nights at his house in Dusun Dharma Sari, Wanagiri Village, Satya and Leni’s bodies were buried at Ambengan Village Cemetery, Sukasada Subdistrict, last Saturday (17/7). It is right that Kertia’s house and his family’s are in Wanagiri village, yet according to custom they go with Ambengan Village and so to get to the cemetery he has to go through small snaky roads and with cliffs. Dharma Sari was a forest area called Alas (Forest) Ambengan and Kertia’s family moved to the place as a maintainer of someone’s garden since 1958 until now. As it develops, the little area was filled up with other maintainers from different areas which then formed an administrative dusun (village) in the Wanagiri village. (ole)

The rehabilitation process of the temple is known to be the growing point of acculturation and also a nationalism feeling which is connected to the people of the pura going to do the piodalan (temple’s day) ceremony on Budha (Wednesday) Wage Kelawu the year coming. For the First Mandala, the constructions not done were the Bale Banten/Petanding (A place to make the offerings) with allocated budget IDR 60 million, rehabilitation on the penyengker with volume 98 meters allocated budget IDER 73,5 million, “the other two were Bale Piasan Alit with size 1,75 x 3,50 meters with budget IDR 18 million and another one with size 1,25 x 2,50 meters with budget IDR 9 million which are being donated by Head of KMB (Bali Post Media Group), Satria Naradha. He also is supporting the construction of
Bale Kulkul in madya mandala with allocated budget IDR 66, 25 million.” To finish this construction, Jro Pasek Warkadea also hoped supports from bhakta in Bali. The temple was built during Kertanegara’s era around year 1200 and it was a beginning of the acculturation and nationalism at North Bali. Also the undone shrines were rehabilitation on pillars IDR 900 thousand, Bale Paebatan IDR 105 million, Bale Pasandekan IDR 60 million, Penhayatan Shrine IDR 1,75 million and parking arrangement IDR 5 million. Based on the proposal made by the temple’s rehabilitation committee the total of the budget needed reached IDR 488.500.000. Village Chief Ketut Sandirat added his village is very thankful of the KMB’s response in supporting the Pura. He hopes the bhakta will support in succeeding this program, “The Head of KMB spontaneously proved his support in Bali to rebuild history places of culture, nationalism and magnanimity.” Head of KMB Satria Naradha admitted sympathized by the steps done by the committee in rehabilitating the Pura. The ongoing Central Parking project at Pasar Badung’s areal affected Seller-On-Cars and the areal. The hundreds of sellers were relocated to Payuk Market, south of Kumbasar Market by the Denpasar Market Management. First Director of the Management, Ir. I Made Westra confirmed last Friday (16/7) the socialization of the project happened since a month ago and so the project done by Denpasar Spatial Planning and Housing Agency (DTRP) the sellers don’t mind, “In principal the sellers have understood, as we have done socialization since a month ago.” Those affected was all moved to Payuk Market although it can’t fit all of them, “Especially sellers-on-cars, it can’t accommodate all so their chief will arrange them.” Total of sellers-on-cars usually reached 132 sellers. Meanwhile the sellers on real reaches 87 people. They started selling from 5 pm to 6 am and at 6 am the function went back to

Another member of Bali Nine filed an appellate (PK) to the decision of the Supreme Court. Following the petition filed by Martin Steven Erick three months ago, last Friday (Jul 16) was the turn of Scott Antony Rush to file a similar petition. Petition of appellate was filed through legal advisor Frans Hendra Winata, Robert Khuana and Ketut Ngastawa. Such petition was received by Deputy Clerk Ketut Sulendra to be subsequently forwarded to the Head of Denpasar District Court (KPN) Nyoman Sutama. Before filing the appellate, Scott Anthony Rush along with two colleagues, Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran once proposed judicial review of the death penalty in Law No. 22/1997 on Narcotics to the Constitutional Court. Unfortunately, the petition was rejected because the Constitutional Court had opinion that article 51 paragraph 1 of Act on the Constitutional Court had firmly and clearly stated that those who might file the request for judicial review of the law against the 1945 Constitutional was an individual or citizen groups having constitutional rights granted by the 1945 Constitution. Frans Hendra Winata stated when arrested Scott was 19 year olds suspected to export narcotics into Australia. At the first level court, Scott was sentenced to life in the Denpasar District Court and then in Supreme Court changed it into death penalty. “He has showed exceptional remorse and promised if freed from death penalty, he really wanted to be an activist combating against drugs, he was regretful and would fix himself,” explained
Frans. The letter of petition had also been attached with supporting letters, including a letter from Kyai in Australia, the AFP and senator. In addition, there was also a letter from Prime Minister Kevin Ruth to President SBY describing about the remorse of Scott Rush. The letter also disclosed that Australia did not apply death penalty, while Indonesia implemented selective death penalty. “Since it is selective, Scott serving as a courier did not deserve to be sentenced with death penalty. On behalf of Scott and his family, we beg in order the sentence of Scott could be commuted, maximally a lifetime sentence. So, he gets an opportunity to live,” he hoped. When asked about new evidence submitted, Frans stated, the evidence brought forward was not merely the evidence that had not been revealed at trial. He explained the new evidences were testimony of two friends namely Renae Lawrence and Michael Zugaj stating that Scott was only a courier, not become the mastermind or the intellectual actor. Even, there was evidence in the form of passports obtained five days before departing for Denpasar, so there was no plan at all. Meanwhile, Robert Khuana added that Letter of AFP even confirmed that Scott was merely a courier. His party considered there was imposition of unjust law among the convicts. Renae who had the same quality or played the same role was only sentenced to 20 years imprisonment. Meanwhile, some other defendants having the same role as courier were not sentenced to death penalty. Among the couriers group only Scott was sentenced to death. (015)

SYDNEY – Australia’s prime minister and her conservative opponent kicked off campaigning Sunday by touching on the key issue of immigration, a day after Julia Gillard called elections a mere three weeks after becoming premier. Gillard, the nation’s first female prime minister, on Saturday scheduled elections for Aug. 21 amid strong support for her new leadership. She became prime minister in June after ousting her predecessor, Kevin Rudd, in a sudden Labor Party coup. Opinion polls have shown Labor holds a slight lead, but the race is expected to be a close one against the conservative opposition coalition led by Tony Abbott. A Galaxy poll published in News Limited newspapers Sunday showed Labor holds a 52-48 percent lead over the opposition. The survey of 800 voters was taken Friday and no margin of error was given. Both Gillard and Abbott have divergent positions on key issues including climate change, record-high public debt and strategies to stop a surge of asylum seekers trying to reach Australia by boat. Gillard has attempted to fix the asylum seeker issue by asking tiny neighbor East Timor to host a U.N.endorsed regional refugee processing hub. On Sunday, the Welsh-born Gillard told a crowd in the Queensland state capital of Brisbane she is against the idea of a “big Australia,” and believes there needs to be a focus on sustainable population growth that puts less stress on resources. But she was quick to note her comments were not meant to be taken as anti-immigration. “I am not saying we should cease to be a nation that embraces diversity or welcomes newcomers,” she said. “As a proud migrant myself I could never believe such a thing. But what I am saying is that growth should make life better for Australian families — not make things harder.” Abbott, meanwhile, spent Sunday morning pushing his Liberal Party’s plans to introduce temporary protec-
tion visas that would allow the government to send refugees back to their home countries if conditions improved there — a plan condemned by Labor. “That is very, very important because people think that if they get here and are assessed as a refugee they’ll have a permanent residency, they’ll have a new life in Australia,” Abbott told Sky News. “Obviously that is a very, very seductive product for the people smugglers to sell.” Gillard and Abbott, who were both at one point thought too leftwing and too right-wing — respectively — to appeal to the mainstream, are both facing the uphill challenge of appealing to critical middle-of-the-road voters. Security has been tightened across the capital ahead of Tuesday’s Kabul Conference, which will be attended by the heads of NATO and the United Nations and top diplomats, including U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. The meeting, nearly nine years after U.S.-backed forces toppled the Taliban’s regime of extreme Islamic law for sheltering al-Qaida terrorist leaders, is to discuss the country’s reconstruction and eventual handing over of all security to the Afghan government. Thousands of Afghan police were
setting up checkpoints and patrolling Kabul trying to prevent any insurgent attack on the conference. In May, the Taliban attacked a national peace conference in Kabul with rocket-propelled grenades that landed about 100 yards (meters) from the site of the gathering, and insurgents also waged a gunbattle with police outside the meeting. Three civilians, but no conference delegates, were wounded. The NATO-led international force is being bolstered by 30,000 more American troops this year, and allied forces say they have captured or killed dozens of Taliban leaders in recent months. However, the added troops and stepped up patrols have not been able to reduce insurgent attacks, which have intensified this year across the country.

FARNBOROUGH, United Kingdom – Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner jet, whose delivery to clients faces fresh delay, landed in Britain on Sunday after its first flight outside of the US ahead of the Farnborough International Airshow. The test plane landed at Farnborough airport at 9:08am (0808 GMT), watched by journalists from around the world, ahead of the major week-long trade show that begins on Monday, where aircraft makers are hoping to secure major orders. “It’s such a nice plane,” Mike Bryan, the pilot who flew the Dreamliner to Britain from the United States told reporters after landing. “I can’t find a pilot who doesn’t love it. I’m privileged enough to fly it.” Last week, US aircraft maker Boeing said it may be forced to delay the delivery of its first fuel-efficient Dreamliner to 2011 from late this year — a date that was already more than two years behind schedule. It has secured 860 orders so far. Last month, Boeing said it had detected a “workmanship issue” with the horizontal stabiliser of the aircraft, whose innovative structure and manufacture across more than 100 sites has created many technical problems. The company is hanging its future hopes on the mid-sized plane — Boeing’s first new model in more than a decade — which draws on huge advances in aviation technology and is capable of flying long-haul routes with up to 20 percent less fuel. The fuel efficiency is largely down to the fact that up to half the
twin-aisle Dreamliner is made of lightweight composite materials, such as carbon fibre-reinforced resin, according to the company. Boeing launched the programme in April 2004 and initially had planned to deliver the first plane to Japanese carrier All Nippon Airways in the first half of 2008 — a deadline which may now be pushed back until the start of 2011. The plane can seat up to 330 passengers. Boeing’s fierce European rival Airbus is meanwhile working on a new long-haul plane of its own — the A350 XWB (Extra Wide Body). Another big project for Airbus is its long-delayed A400M military transport plane. The head of Airbus parent company EADS, Louis Gallois, said on Sunday that he expected contracts with clients for the A400M to be signed in the European autumn later this year. “I expect it will be at fall,” Louis Gallois told reporters. The client countries for the Airbus transporter are France, Germany, Spain, Britain, Belgium, Luxembourg and Turkey. The seven states, after tense negotiations in the
face of production difficulties with the A400M, reached an agreement in March with EADS on sharing out 5.2 billion euros (6.4 billion dollars) in cost over-runs. The European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company plans to deliver the first A400M to France in early 2013. Gallois meanwhile added on Sunday that he expected the military plane market to face a tough few years as governments look to slash their defence spending in a bid to reduce massive state deficits. “We think that we have ahead of us three or four years that will be difficult,” said Gallois. On the civilian side, any new orders for aircraft at Farnborough — one of aerospace’s biggest events — are likely to be dominated by airlines from emerging economies across Asia and the Middle East where air traffic is growing rapidly. Boeing and Airbus meanwhile head to the show facing increased competition for their mid-sized civilian jets from smaller manufacturers, such as Brazil’s Embraer and Bombardier of Canada.
“Three more bodies were recovered from a sunken fishing vessel,” Benito Ramos, chief of the Office of Civil Defence in Manila, said on DZBB radio. “The death toll is now 68.” He said rescuers, including volunteers and troops, continued to scour coastal areas in the country’s southeastern seaboard Sunday, where the majority of the 84 still missing were reported. “We are still hoping that they are still alive,” Ramos said. However, he said fresh rains brought on by a new weather disturbance east of the main island of Luzon were hampering search and rescue operations. State weather forecasters said the rains were unlikely to develop into a full-blown storm. The Philippines is in the socalled typhoon belt of the Pa-

After slamming into the Philippines, Typhoon Conson, the first of the season, brushed past the southeastern Chinese island of Hainan and barreled its way into Vietnam on Saturday. It killed least two people, tore down trees and ripped up electricity pylons when it hit Hainan Friday evening, local officials said.Authorities on the popular tourist island evacuated around 40,000 people from the most vulnerable areas before the storm headed inland. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media. Iraqi military spokesman Maj. Gen. Qassim al-Moussawi said the bomber struck at 7 a.m. at a checkpoint near the military facility. The area was immediately closed off, and Iraqi helicopters could be seen flying over the site. In the second attack, a suspected militant stormed a local Sahwa headquarters in the Anbar province town of Qaim, near the Syrian border, and opened fire on those inside. Sahwa fighters returned fire, wounding the attacker, who then blew himself up as they gathered around him, killing three of the fighters and wounding three others, two police officials said, also speaking on condition of anonymity. Qaim is a former insurgent stronghold. While violence has dropped dramatically over the past two years in the country, Iraqi security forces remain a favorite target for insurgents bent on destabilizing the country and its Shiite-led government. The Sahwa fighters have played a key role in the reduction of violence in Iraq since they first rose up against their former al-Qaida allies in late 2006, joining the U.S. military and government forces in the fight against the terror group. opened fire on a Sahwa checkpoint in Mahaweel, about 56 kilometers (35 miles) south of Baghdad, wounding one, according to Babil police spokesman Maj. Muthana Khalid. Khalid said a roadside bomb went off about 30 minutes later, hitting a car driven by another Sahwa member in Haswa, about 50 kilometers (30 miles) south of Baghdad. The Sahwa member was wounded in the attack. More than four months after an inconclusive parliamentary election in March, Iraq has no government as politicians continue to bicker over who will lead it. The impasse has raised fears that militants will exploit the political vacuum to re-ignite sectarian violence that brought Iraq to the brink of civil war in 2006 and 2007. The attacks against the security forces and the Sahwa are especially worrying because they come at a time when the number of U.S. troops in Iraq is dropping and Iraq’s nascent security forces are taking over security in the country. All U.S. combat units are scheduled to leave Iraq by the end of next month and the last American soldier by the end of next year. Insurgents have used an array of attacks to intimidate and kill security forces, such as drive-by shootings, bombs attached to the undercarriage of vehicles and bombing houses where security forces live. But Sunday’s attack in Radwaniya was more reminiscent of the type insurgents used in the past to discourage people from joining the security forces.

clean, healthy, safe, and convenient markets under the revitalization program, he said, The government has also promoted integrations between central markets and supporting markets as part of the revitalization efforts among other things in Magelang (Central Java), Bandung and Majalengka (West Java), Tangerang (Banten) and Tanah Tinggi. He called on the private sector to help support the traditional market revitalization program by using their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds. Traditional markets, according to him, have played important role in
bolstering the people’s economy. The government on Saturday launched a traditional market cleaning-up drive to mark National Clean Market Day targeting 800 so-called wet markets in 32 provinces simultaneously. The peak event of the day was held at the Cibitung traditional market, Bekasi, West Java Province, and led by Trade Ministry Secretary General Ardiansyah. The cleaning-up campaign was part of the government’s program to revitalize traditional markets throughout Indonesia, he said. Indonesia currently has 13,650 traditional markets with 12.6 million traders.

KENDARI - The Pulau Makassar Festival (PUMA Festival) in Baubau City, Southeast Sulawesi (Sultra), has been included in the National Tourism calendar, a local tourism official said. Sultra Culture and Tourism Office spokesman Ibrahim Marsela said here on Saturday the PUMA Festival from July 18-21, 2010 would be opened by Governor Nur Alam and lustered up by various cultural and art performances. “Besides opening the PUMA Festival in Baubau, the Southeast Sulawesi governor will also open an Ethnic Language International Congress which is to be attended by delegates from 13 countries,” Ibrahim said.
He said the main event in the three-day festival would be marked by a “Tuturangiana Andala” traditional ritual performance by Pulau Makassar community members. In the ritual , Ibrahim said, local fishermen and other indigenous stakeholders would make offerings at sea as a gift to the powers of the sea. The ritual’s purpose was for the fishermen to be blessed with big catches when they go fishing at sea and protected from peril. “The interesting tradition for both domestic and foreign tourists is ancestral heritage of Pulau Makassar community which is conducted every year as part of National Tourism calendar since 2008,” Ibrahim said. JAKARTA - Indonesian police on Friday arrested a music engineer for allegedly uploading to the Internet a popular rock singer’s private sex videos featuring two television starlets. Police said the suspect identified only as “RJ” had worked in the studio with singer Nazril Ariel, 28, who was detained last month over the explicit videos which have shocked the country. “RJ is a technician who edited songs where Ariel made the records,” national police spokesman Edward Aritonang said. “The clips were taken from Ariel’s laptop. We believe he’s the first one who spread the clips.” Ten people have been detained under Indonesia’s tough anti-pornography law in connection with
the “Peterporn” scandal, named after Ariel’s band Peterpan. They face up to 12 years in jail. Models and television personalities Luna Maya, 26, and Cut Tari, 32, who appear separately in the videos, have been questioned but have not been arrested. Ariel, a divorcee, and Tari, who is married, could also face up to nine months in prison for alleged adultery. The communications minister, a conservative Muslim, has announced plans to restrict websites containing “negative” material in response to the sex scandal.

JAKARTA - Director for Public Services of the State Logistics Board (Bulog) Sutono said Indonesia as the world’s largest archipelago needs a strong food resilience and price stability system. “The basic necessities’ price hike due to the power tariff increases at present is actually only a small tremor but it significantly causes people to become unrest,” Sutono said at a dialog on the high-rocketing of prices. He said that it could not be imagined if Indonesia was facing a conflict with other countries which boycotted its products. It would surely cause difficulties for Indonesia to control the stability of its basic necessaries’ prices. Therefore, the government should be able to build a really strong food resilience and price stability system. “In this case, the government should have a strong food reserve,” he added. He cited cooking oil as an example. If the government was willing to maintain the stability of its price, it could stay and merely said what it had to do to lower its price. Cooking oil is under the control of several business groups only and in this case the government if it wanted to keep price to remain stable has to have enough stocks, he said. The prices of essential goods in the country are now showing an upward trend to between 5 and 15 percent after the government raised the prices of basic power rates by an average of 10 percent this month. Legislator Abdurrrahman of the House Commission VI on trade said that the electricity tariff hike was only one of the factors that caused the price increases. He said that the other factors that caused the price hikes were the increasing demands while supplies were declining. The rain in certain parts of the country had reduced the production of chili, rice, unions and vegetables so that prices were on the rise, he said.

On such coordinative meeting, Mangku Pastika received the description from Highway Construction and Maintenance Services (Bina Marga) and National Road Management, Department of Public Works that flyover at Kuta Roundabouts simply needed to release the land. The flyover was estimated to spend the fund approximately IDR 240 billion and scheduled that it could have been completed in the upcoming 2013 because

According to Pastika, new location for the placement of the statue could look for empty land in the region. “We planned to move it to vacant land around Simpang Siur area. It’s not heavy, just a technical matters only. The important
thing is the plan first,” he said again. DENPASAR - Bali Province hosted a two-day International Workshop on Orangutan Conservation, from July 15 to 16, 2010, themed “What does the future hold for the man of the forest?” The Directorate General of Forest Protection and Nature Conservation of the Forestry Ministry organized the event in cooperation with the Indonesian Orangutan Forum (FORINA) and its partners. The workshop discussed the importance of collaboration among businesses, conservation groups and the scientific community in order to secure the future of the species, according to the US embassy on its official website. The Indonesian areas of Kalimantan (on the island of Borneo) and Sumatra are home to 90 percent of the world’s orangutans. Although legally protected in Indonesia, orangutans face extinction, and laws and
regulations are themselves insufficient to protect the charismatic animals. Orangutan conservation calls for comprehensive and integrated efforts by all stakeholders, both in the field and in the political arena, to ensure success. “Conservation of orangutan habitat is a `triple-win’ scenario: it preserves endangered great apes, protects forest biodiversity, and sequesters large amounts of carbon to combat climate change,” said Walter North, USAID Director for Indonesia. Herry Djoko Susilo, Chairman of FORINA said, “We have to send a clear message on the urgency to stop and reverse global warming.” USAID’s Orangutan Conservation Services Program (OCSP) is working to protect select wild orangutan populations and their habitats in Kalimantan and Sumatra.

DENPASAR - The economic growth of Bali province in the second quarter of 2010 is expected to reach 5.1 percent which is higher than the 4.4 percent in the same period in 2009, a bank official said. The economic growth at a positive range of the Indonesian tourist resort province is expected to be generated by the tourism sector, agriculture and services, head of Bank Indonesia (BI) for Bali, Jeffrey Kairupan, said. He said that the banking performance in that period was also good where banks would be
able to increase their assets and public savings with inflationary pressures at estimated 5.7 percent. The tourism condition of Bali took advantage of the global economic crisis which had begun to improve in advanced countries. Political crisis in neighboring country was also a blessing for Bali’s tourism where tourists who had planned a holiday in that country switched their destination to Indonesia. In the January - May 2010 period, almost one million foreign tourists visited Bali, or an increase of about 12.02 percent compared with the same period in 2009.

DENPASAR - A total of 29,862 Singaporean tourists visited the resort island of Bali in the first five months of 010, jumping 53.18 percent from 19,495 in the same period last year. The significant increase was similar to the number of Australian tourist arrivals which went up 55.72 percent, Head of the Bali Provincial Statistics Office Ida Komang Wisnu said here on Thursday. All of the Singaporean tourists came to Bali by air, he said. Over the period Singapore ranked ten as the source country of foreign tourist arrivals in Bali, he said. The Singaporean tourists were
made up of 3.14 percent of the overall tourist arrivals in the province in the five-month period which reached 952,073, he said. Compared to the same period last year, the number of tourist arrivals in the first five months of 2010 rose 9.43 percent, he said. He said five of the top ten countries saw a significant increase in the number of tourist arrivals in Bali over the period while the number of tourists from the other five countries fell. The number of tourists from Australia rose 55.72 percent to 213,361 from 137,018, Taiwan 13.83 percent to 54,828 from 48,168, the Netherlands 45.89 percent to 30,388 from 20,829, Britain 3.83 percent to 29,862 from
19,495 and Singapore 53.18 percent to 29,862 from 19,495. In the meantime, the number of tourists from France fell 5.35 percent from 37,256 to 25,264, South Korea 7.03 percent from 52,311 to 48,631, Malaysia 8.26 percent from 56,192 to 53,383, China 2.67 percent from 85,828 to 83,535 and Japan 24.71 percent from 132,122 to 99,473. Meanwhile, Indonesia’s Central Statistics Agency (BPS) said in the first five months of 2010, the number of foreign tourists coming to Indonesia reached 2.77 million. Head of BPS Rusman Heriawan said in Jakarta recently the total increased 14.59 percent compared to the 2.41 million in last year’s same period.
Attempt to smuggle 2 kg of methamphetamine foiled Antara
DENPASAR - Customs officers at Bali’s Ngurah Rai airport have foiled an attempt to smuggle in two kilograms of methamphetamine into the resort island. “The case involves four suspects, three foreigners and one Indonesian,” the head of service and supervision of the Ngurah Rai airport’s Customs Office, Bambang Wahyudi, said in Badung on Saturday. He said they aborted the attempt after earlier arresting one of them, , Fulache Beverly Adtoo, who is a
Filipino. The three other suspects are known as Maikel Onuorah and Austine Uchenna Bosa (Lala) who are Nigerian. “The Indonesian involved in the case is known Enny Malini alias Cika,” he said. Fulache was arrested after landing at the aiport on July 13. He said the customs officers confiscated two kilograms of menthamphetamine from him. “Fulache who flew aboard Air Asia AK 366 and landed at 1am kept the illegal drug in the fake inner partition of his travel bag,” he said.
Following further investigation it was later found that Fulache was a member of a ring involving the other three suspects arrested later in Jakarta. The officers uncovered the ring after conducting control delivery to Jakarta. The three were then taken to Denpasar aboard Garuda that landed at 9am. “Cika is a courier who has been instructed to take the bag to Beverly in Hotel Kartika Chandra,” he said. Later it was found that the two Nigerians are contract soccer players whose contract has expired.

This cultural heritage is one of the sacred article, kept in Penataran Sasih Temple in Pejeng Village, Gianyar and is located in the main street of Tampaksiring-Kintamani so no difficulty to visit it. Another story told of this Pejeng nekara as the earplug of Kebo Iwa, a powerful legendary figure who was able to carve Goa Gajah, steep bank temple of Gunung Kawi, etc. The Pejeng nekara has been in-
troduced internationally by G.E. Rumphius, an expert in Biology through his book Amboinsche Rariteitkamer, published in 1705. Although he never been to Bali, but he had succeeded for using the information from Hendrik Leydekereker’s. In fact, this nekara is a giant nekara with large size in every detail as in height of 186.5 m and a diameter of 1.60 m for its hit zone. Around the archeological experts, this nekara is also called as nekara with head, because it has four pairs of mask decoration with bulged-out eyes, long-coned nose, and the ears wearing earrings made from coins. The decoration of the mask is not only functioned as esthetic-decorative, but more for magical symbolism for the ancestors’ symbol of magic power which bring prosperity and protect the family or the society from any danger. Another decoration which has the magical symbolism is the decoration of octagonal star on the hit zone, border design, feather, and so on. “Bulan Pejeng” is a masterpiece work of technology and metallurgy that reached its peak on Bronze Age. This cultural heritage is a sig-
nificant mixture between modern and complicated metal technology and art creativity which full magical symbolism values as can be seen from its shape and patterns. All of it is the proof of a local Balinese wisdom in its spectacular work about 2000 years ago, far before India reached Bali. Ingredients: 1 pc young banana stem (slice thinly), 250gram chicken (chopped) Spices: 8 cloves shallot, 4 cloves garlic, 2 small chilies, 1 candlenut, 1 slice turmeric, 1 slice ginger, 1 slice galangal, 1 slice lesser galangal (kencur), ½ tsp pepper, ½ tsp coriander, 1 stalk lemongrass (slice thinly), 2 pcs kaffir lime leaf (chopped well), 2 pcs salam leaf, 1 tsp salt Others: 1 tbsp fried shallot, 1 tbsp fried chili and banana leaf for wrapping Method: · All spices are finely ground and then stirred-fry until smelling fragrant. · Boil the slices of banana stem for a while (until boiling). Take out and drain. When it has been cool, press thoroughly until it really dries. · Chopped chicken and pressed banana stem are then mixed together with stir-fried spices. Add salam leaf, kaffir lime leaf, salt, fried shallot and chili. Perform this step evenly. · Wrap some amounts of batter lengthwise by banana leaf until entirely runs out. (Spice Pastes) OVERVIEW: Balinese food gets its characteristic flavor from a blend of spices, herbs, roots and other savory ingredients, which are prepared in different ways. The basic seasonings (known as base – pronounced baseh – are sometimes finely chopped or sliced, other times pounded to a fine paste. Some spice pastes are made from raw ingredients, while for others; the ingredients are either steamed or roasted before pounding. These spice pastes can be prepared in advanced and stored in a refrigerator for up to one week. They can also be divided into smaller quantities and deep-frozen. If you are using a mortar and pestle, grind the dry spices such as pepper and coriander first; then add the hardest ingredients, the roots such as laos and kencur. When these are finely ground, add the shallots and chilies, then finally soft ingredients such as shrimp paste. If using a food processor, blend the dry spices first then add all other ingredients, except the oil. WASHINGTON - Greek authorities have made “considerable progress” towards putting public finances in order, but the cost of health and social security funds continue to present risks, the IMF said in a new report. “State budget implementation is on track with good expenditure control,” the organization said after a recent visit to the country, which was forced to seek loans from the European Union and International Monetary Fund amid spiraling debt. “However, hospitals and social security funds present clear risks, as do financial pressures in public enterprises,” the international lending institution said in the report
published on its website. Belt-tightening measures intended to tame Greece’s deficit contributed to slower economic activity, as had been expected, but inflation was up more than forecast, while private consumption was found to be “surprisingly resilient.” Overall, the report said the austerity measures adopted in May, over howls of protests from many in Greece, were being implemented
as intended. The measures were applied in exchange for the release of a first installment of loans from a three-year 136-billion-dollar bailout package issued jointly by the EU and IMF. EU and IMF officials are expected to visit Greece again between July 26 and August 6 to produce a first official review of the plan, a condition for the release of the next tranche of bailout money.

NEW YORK - Big banks facing big drops in revenue are looking to Main Street to make up the difference. Checking accounts, bank statements, even popping into your local bank branch could carry a hefty cost as the nation’s mega-banks scramble to offset expected damage from the sweeping financial overhaul. The uncertain future has overshadowed otherwise strong second-quarter earnings at JPMorgan Chase & Co., Citigroup Inc. and Bank of America Corp. All three companies beat expectations this week with profitable results. Yet their stocks tumbled, helping send the wider market sharply lower Friday. The reason: Investors are worried about banks’ future earning power after Thursday’s passage of the most dramatic rewriting of banking rules since the Great Depression. Adding to the pessimism are falling trading profits — which all three banks mentioned in the their earnings reports — and weak U.S. loan demand. The worries are well-founded. Bank of America said Friday it could lose up to $2.3 billion in annual revenue alone just from new restrictions on debt card “swipe” fees, or the money banks charge merchants who accept debit cards. All told, the bill’s passage will reduce the value of Bank of America’s lucrative credit
card business by a staggering $7 billion to $10 billion. “This is going to cause a significant reduction in revenue in the future,” Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan said of the restrictions after his bank reported a second-quarter profit of $2.78 billion, up 15 percent from a year ago. The second-quarter results, driven by a sharp drop in losses from failed loans, would have given Bank of America’s stock a nice bounce in the past. Instead, investors anxious about the future swiftly dumped the shares, which fell 9 percent. Yet banks are already moving to recoup any losses. One approach: making traditionally free services premium offerings. A Bank of America pilot program in Georgia, for instance, charges customers $8.95 a month to get paper statements or use bank tellers. The bank could start the program nationally as soon as next month. Bank of America is also considering raising minimum balances on some accounts and charging customers who fall below it, Moynihan told analysts during a conference call. Other banks are considering doing away with the once ubiquitous free checking accounts long used to lure new customers. “Checking accounts are a potential source of income. That’s the No. 1 thing that banks are looking at to recoup some of these costs,” said Shannon Stemm, a financial
services analyst with Edward Jones. The changes reflect the new reality of the U.S. banking industry in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis. The overhaul approved by Congress on Thursday and soon to be signed into law by President Barack Obama tightens rules on everything from simple debit card transactions to the most complex securities. Staying nimble and adjusting their business models accordingly is crucial for the big banks to stay competitive. And bank CEOs are making no apologies for the defensive moves. “If you’re a restaurant and you can’t charge for the soda, you’re going to charge more for the burger,” JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon said Thursday after his company reported a $4.8 billion second-quarter profit. While overdraft and other types of fees became overly “punitive” for some customers, other services have been a relative bargain and must be paid for through higher fees, Dimon said. And new fees may only be the beginning. Big banks that cater to the masses may start offering more services to the wealthy — and thus command even higher fees — as well as scale back operational costs, analysts say. CreditSights analyst David Hendler said in a report Friday that Bank of America may have to eventually close up to a third of its 6,000 branches nationwide.

An iPad is sold on average every 2.3 seconds, with three million sold in the first 80 days after its launch in the US in April. Three million iPhone 4 smartphones were also sold in only three weeks since its June release. The increase in demand has made this a hot summer so far for Taiwanese touchscreen maker Wintek, and not just because temperatures have risen to abnormally high levels. Located in the central Taiwanese city of Taichung, the company has struggled to keep up with insatiable demand for its high-tech components. “The strong demand exceeds our expectations,” said a Wintek official, speaking on condition of anonymity. “Our clients keep pushing us to increase supplies.” Wintek, whose customers reportedly include global brands such as Apple of the United States, Finland’s Nokia and South Korea’s LG, said the component shortage surfaced in the second quarter of the year. Apart from a gradual global recovery, one of the triggers for the sudden spike in demand for components has been the launch of several much-anticipated products, especially the iPad tablet computer from Apple. For many products, the lead time — the period from when a customer orders an item until he gets it — has expanded significantly beyond the usual 10 to 12 weeks, according to iSuppli, an electronics industry research firm. “When lead times enter the 20-
week range, they indicate a major schism between component supply and demand,” said Rick Pierson, a senior analyst for semiconductors and component price tracking at iSuppli. Matthew Chao, an analyst at Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute, said the iPad would continue to send ripple effects through the industry, causing demand to rise further. For instance, HP and Acer are planning to unveil their own tablet computers in the third and fourth quarters, which will further boost demand for components, he said. “The market for smartphones and tablet computers is looking very bullish, especially since the fourth quarter is the traditional high season for the holidays,” he said. South Korean firms say they are struggling to acquire components due to shortages caused by strong demand, although they insist there have been no serious delays yet in overall production and shipments. Samsung Electronics and Hynix Semiconductor, the world’s largest and second-largest computer microchip makers, have boosted capital outlays to meet rising global demand. Factories for Samsung and LG, which produce gadgets including mobile phones and flat panel screens, are running flat out. “Our plants are now running at full capacity due to strong demand and brisk sales,” a Samsung spokesman said. Yet Samsung’s production of memory chips meets only 70 percent of total international demand and its output of 3D televisions covers 80 percent of demand, he said. Corse Matin newspaper said officers at the airport in Figari found about one gram’s worth of marijuana. Hilton, who was transiting the French Mediterranean island in a private jet on Friday, was hauled
in for questioning and released about 30 minutes later, the report said. In a story posted on its Web site, the newspaper said Hilton was traveling along with “personalities close to power in Malaysia” from the French capital to Porto Cervo, in Sardinia. In a posting on the TwitLonger site Saturday, Hilton wrote, “Just to put an end to these rumors. The stories saying I have been arrested are completely false!” “I am having the best vacation of my life,” the posting said. Earlier this month, Hilton was arrested after the Brazil-Netherlands World Cup match in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, on suspicion of possession of marijuana. The case was then dropped at a midnight court hearing. Hilton pleaded no contest in 2007 to alcohol-related reckless driving and was sentenced to 45 days in jail. After spending about 23 days in jail, Hilton told U.S. television host Larry King that the experience caused her to re-evaluate the role partying played in her life. She said she wanted “to help raise money for kids and for breast cancer and multiple sclerosis.”

PARIS – After tens of thousands of years under the Siberian frost, a baby woolly mammoth is taking a summer vacation in southeast France. Baby Khroma, one of the oldest intact mammoths ever found, went on display in a French museum Friday - after it underwent special tests to ensure it was no longer bearing the anthrax believed to have killed it. Khroma is on display at the Musee Crozatier in Puy-en-Velay in a special cryogenic chamber kept at -18 degrees C (-0.40 Fahrenheit). The 80-centimeter-high, 1.6meter-long (1-foot-high, 5-footlong) prehistoric guest may be the oldest baby mammoth ever discovered. Carbon dating methods failed to determine its age, suggesting it is more than 50,000 years old, said French researchers and Sergei Gorbunov, project coordinator for the Geneva-based International Mammoth Committee. Russian news reports have said it is 32,000
years old. It will undergo further isotope analysis in France to try to pin down its age - and its gender, up to now unclear. “It’s a unique discovery,” Gorbunov told The Associated Press by telephone. “Any discovery of a new mammoth gives us new scientific information about prehistory.” Similar enthusiasm was felt six months ago in the United States when a 42,000-year-old baby woolly mammoth named Lyuba arrived at the Field Museum in Chicago, where it is still on display. The practically intact specimen, discovered in 2007 in
Siberia as well, is the best-preserved of her kind, according to researchers. For Tom Skwerski, project manager for the Chicago exhibition, Khroma will be an important addition to the specimen pool. “There is still a lot to learn about woolly mammoths, and the more specimens we find, the closer we get to answering those questions,” he told AP. Some aspects of those animals’ lives, like migration patterns, still challenge scientists. Such mammoths offer scientists the opportunity to do analysis that they cannot carry out on skeletons, such as studying stomach contents and fur. Putting them on display gives a broader public a tangible link to the prehistoric past. Khroma, dug out last year from the Yakutia region in Siberia, arrived in France on Sunday, as part of a year of Franco-Russian cross-cultural events.

French scientists crack secrets of Mona Lisa Associated Press Writer
PARIS – The enigmatic smile remains a mystery, but French scientists say they have cracked a few secrets of the “Mona Lisa.” French researchers studied seven of the Louvre Museum’s Leonardo da Vinci paintings, including the “Mona Lisa,” to analyze the master’s use of successive ultrathin layers of paint and glaze - a technique that gave his works their dreamy quality. Specialists from the Center for Research and Restoration of the Museums of France found that da Vinci painted up to 30 layers of paint on his works to meet his standards of subtlety. Added up, all the layers are less than 40 micrometers, or about half the thickness of a human hair, researcher Philippe Walter said Friday. The technique, called “sfumato,” allowed da Vinci to give outlines and contours a hazy quality and create an illusion of depth and shadow. His use of the technique is well-known, but scientific study on it has been limited because tests often required samples
from the paintings. The French researchers used a noninvasive technique called X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy to study the paint layers and their chemical composition. They brought their specially developed high-tech tool into the museum when it was closed and studied the portraits’ faces, which are emblematic of sfumato. The project was developed in collaboration with the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility in Grenoble. The tool is so precise that “now we can find out the mix of pigments used by the artist for each coat of paint,” Walter told The Associated Press. “And that’s very, very important for understanding the technique.” The analysis of the various paintings also shows da Vinci was constantly trying out new methods, Walter said. In the “Mona Lisa,” da Vinci used manganese oxide in his shadings. In others, he used copper. Often he used glazes, but not always. The results were published Wednesday in Angewandte Chemie International Edition, a chemistry journal.

At a rare, 90-minute press conference, the Apple chief executive asserted that reception issues were a problem shared by the entire smartphone industry, naming specifically rivals Research in Motion, Samsung Electronics and HTC Corp. Jobs maintained there were no problems with the iPhone 4’s wraparound antenna design and accused the media of trying to “tear down” a company that had grown so successful. After the June 24 launch of the iPhone 4, some users reported dras-
tically reduced signal strength when they held the touch-screen phone a certain way, in what has come to be known as the “iPhone 4 death grip.” Apple has lost more than $16 billion of its market value since June 28, with at least some of that attributed by analysts to the iPhone snafu. All Woods could manage Saturday at the British Open was a second straight 73, despite having four putts for eagle on the Old Course. I just didn’t get
anything out of the round. I couldn’t build any momentum. I wasn’t making any putts.” It was easy to zero in on the root of his problems: Look no further than the flat stick. MIAMI – For the Miami Heat, the first priority of the summer was the big moves, the names like LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. It’s been all about big men since. Zydrunas Ilgauskas became the third center to sign with the Heat in less than 24 hours on Saturday, completing a deal he agreed in principle to about five days earlier. On Friday, the Heat completed contracts with returning Miami veteran Joel Anthony and rookie draft pick Dexter Pittman. And Miami’s next move is expected to be the re-signing of another 7-footer, Jamaal Magloire. That’s roughly 28 feet of centers in all, with the 7-foot-3 Ilgauskas standing taller than everyone else on Miami’s now-bursting depth chart at center. The Lithuanian — who was drafted by Cleveland in 1996 and has never suited up for any other NBA club — is 12th among all active players with 1,269 blocks, and 21st among current players in rebounds with 5,904. “As we continue to shape our roster, we have filled a key position with the addition of Zydrunas,” Heat president Pat Riley said in a release. “He is a two-time All-Star, a proven rebounder, and a great shot blocker. PARIS – World number one Serena Williams will miss three hardcourt tournaments in the buildup to her US Open defence after suffering a foot injury caused by stepping on broken glass at a restaurant. Williams will miss the WTA Tour events in Istanbul, Cincinnati, and Montreal while she undergoes surgery to repair the damage to her right foot. “I’m so upset I won’t be able to play in the upcoming events because of this foot surgery. Thank you for all of your support. I can’t wait to get back on the courts,” Williams said in a statement. Just two weeks ago, the 28-yearold American cruised to a fourth women’s singles title at Wimbledon with a crushing 6-3, 6-2 victory over Russia’s Vera Zvonareva. It was her 13th Grand Slam crown. Marquez fights for fifth straight win GERMANY - World championship leader Marc Marquez was gifted his fifth consecutive 125cc win of the season after his key title rival Pol Espargaro crashed out of the lead with three laps to go. The pair had battled tooth-and-nail at the front from lap four, when they passed early (wet tyre-shod) early leaders Jonas Folger and Marcel Schrotter when the track was still mostly damp. Swapping the lead virtually every lap from that point onwards, and pushing hard as they explored the limits of the rumble strip’s adhesion at several points around the circuit, it remained unclear which rider ultimately held a pace advantage heading in to the final stages. Though it seemed as if Marquez’s was the quicker Derbi in the final third of the lap and Espargaro always looked slightly more on the edge at that point on the circuit. And so it proved when Espargaro went an inch too wide on the fast penultimate righthander and ran on to the Astroturf. He immediately lost purchase and flew high in the air, releasing Marquez in to a clear 23s lead over another battling gaggle for third. Espargaro’s mistake elevated Tomoyoshi Koyama to second, though he had to fight hard for that too. In a scrap that included Esteve Rabat, Bradley Smith, Randy Krummenacher and latterly the
home-grown talent of Sandro Cortese, Koyama moved to the front just at the right time to inherit second. Cortese who dropped back badly off the front-row at the start, applied determination and patience to fight his way back on to the tail of this battle for third - which became second after Espergaro’s crash. And as it heated up in the final laps, Cortese made the most of a cool head and scrapped his way through, and as they came into the final corner, made a rash dive down the inside of Rabat for third. If the Spaniard hadn’t sat up slightly, they both would have fallen, but he did and Cortese was through for
a podium finish in front his home crowd. Rabat gathered it up for fourth ahead of Smith, who faded in the final laps having run third himself three laps from the flag. Johann Zarco had a grandstand view of all this as he ran around just behind this pack to finish sixth. Danny Webb was another last lap opportunist as he took seventh from Efren Vazquez. Sturla Fagerhaug and wild card entry Daniel Kartheininger completed the top ten, while early leader Folger, who was at one point five seconds ahead of the winner in those opening wet laps eventually finished 16th.

The Gresini Moriwaki rider was bullied down the order in a chaotic start that witnessed yet another multi-bike shunt at the first corner which among others, accounted for Joan Olive, Lucas Pesek and Raffaele de Rosa. But in typical fashion Elias responded quickly. By lap 10 he had found his way to the front of a huge gaggle of bikes in pursuit of the two runaway Fimmco Speed Ups of Andrea Iannone and Gabor Talmasci, which led the race. Talmasci took the early lead, but Iannone – seeking recompense for the win he should have taken in Barcelona (but for a penalty having passed under yellows) – quickly moved ahead of his teammate and established a lead. That lead initially looked unassailable, but Elias was closing fast. As Talmacsi, the 2007 125cc German GP winner, faded along with his medium/hard rear Dunlop, so Elias appeared to get stronger, and having dispatched the Hungarian with ease, he set about Iannone. On lap 24 Elias made his move, a
clean one down the inside into Turn 1, and ensured that Iannone will have to wait just a little bit longer for his third Moto2 race win of the year. The Italian afterwards admitted that he simply didn’t have rear tyre to defend the advances of the former MotoGP race-winner late-on. With Corsi, who had followed Elias through the field, having fallen, an enormous battle behind him became the scrap for third. It was only settled on the last lap when Roberto Rolfo made a daring move down the inside of the feisty Fonsi Nieto in to Turn 1 on the last lap. And while Nieto didn’t give up without a fight, he couldn’t prevent the Italian taking his first podium of the season. Karel Abraham took a strong fifth position in yet another convincing performance, while Talmacsi eventually slipped to sixth. Australia’s Damian Cudlin, replacing Carmelo Morales who crashed so spectacularly in Barcelona, did well to finish seventh on the Pons bike ahead of Dominique Aegerter. Stefan Bradl was another in with a shout of a strong finish before slipping back to ninth in the end, while Yonni Hernandez completed the top ten.
