Artist buried for three days under busy Australian road SYDNEY - An artist has emerged from three days entombed in a steel box under a busy Australian road in a performance billed as a tribute to victims of totalitarian violence. Mike Parr, 73, fasted during his time underground, with oxygen pumped into the 1.7-metre (5.5-foot) by 2.2-metre container to keep him alive as traffic drove on overhead. He had bedding, water, a waste bucket, a sketchpad and pencils for the stunt in Hobart, part of Tasmania state’s annual Dark Mofo festival, which celebrates darkness through large-scale public art, food, film and music. “The anxiety of the artist’s disappearance is the point of the piece,” organisers said. It was also an attempt to highlight “the shadow cast by the genocidal violence of 19th century British colonialism in Australia”, they added. Parr, who had been buried with only a small light, clambered out of his prison on a ladder late Sunday after heavy machinery carefully removed the asphalt that had sealed him in.
He exited without saying a word or acknowledging a crowd that had gathered in the rain. He is expected to detail his experience in a public forum on Tuesday. “He is an endurance performance artist and he’s been doing this for many years, so his body is quite used to doing this,” Dark Mofo curator Jarrod Rawlins told reporters. While some welcomed the feat as thought-provoking, others were left baffled. “People work a lifetime underground. This goose spends three days in a box doing frig all, calls it art and it makes the news,” an unimpressed Rodney Gibbison said on Facebook. James Hank de Ridder added: “If I could only get the last five minutes of my life back after watching this absolutely pointless exercise.” Parr is no stranger to controversial performances, having once used an axe to hack off his prosthetic arm, which he had filled with minced meat and blood, in front of a shocked audience. ‘Incredibles 2’ makes heroic N. America box office debut
LOS ANGELES - “Incredibles 2,” the long-awaited return of a quirky animated superhero family from Disney-Pixar, reigned supreme at the North American box office, raking in a record $180 million in its debut, industry estimates showed Sunday. It was the highest ever opening for an animated film in the US and Canada, easily besting the $135 million debut of its Disney-Pixar stablemate, “Finding Dory” (2016). The film tells the story of the Parr family -- matriarch Helen (Holly Hunter) is called upon to help bring the world’s hiding superheroes back into the open, as husband Bob (Craig T. Landslides, flash floods as monsoon batters southern Myanmar
Flooding in southern Myanmar has caused a landslide at a famed Buddhist pagoda, submerged homes and displaced hundreds of people as monsoon rains batter the country. Several parts of Myanmar’s southern Mon state are facing flash floods due to heavy rains since the weekend with no relief in sight, according to a report in the state-run Global New Light of Myanmar on Monday. Myanmar is one of several countries in the region to face severe yearly flooding. In 2015 it topped a global list compiled by climate scientists of nations hardest hit by extreme weather. That year more than 100 people died in floodwaters that also
displaced hundreds of thousands across the country. AMLAPURA —There has been no panic among the residents of around Mount Agung when the eruption occurred for several times since last Wednesday (Jun. 13) until Saturday (Jun. 16). Thick smoke blast soared and then moved westward, causing no impact in Karangasem. Pasebaya noted that Mount Agung eruption always happens every day, like last Wednesday, coinciding with new moon of the twelfth month in Balinese calendar and sometimes on full moon night, Kajeng Kliwon and other religious holidays. Pasebaya volunteers asked residents to remain calm, not to get easily hooked by fake issues. The frequent eruption at this time had shocked and caused the residents of Karangasem to worry. However, in the field the residents responded it differently where they are absorbed in capturing the moment. Other than residents of Amlapura town, the people in danger radius are also enthusiastic to capture the moment of this eruption. “As the report from our volunteers, there is no panic at Besakih, where many people just took their mobile phone to record and have pictures. The volcanic ashes reported by volunteers happened at Songan (Kintamani, Bangli). Meanwhile, it did not happen in Karangasem,” said Chief of Pasebaya of Mount Agung, I Gede Pawana. Pawana admitted to always upset before the holiday considering that every full moon, new moon, Kajeng Kliwon and other religious holidays, Mount Agung always shows increased activities in the presence of these blows. He claimed to have often proved this. Then, the last eruption returned to prove the prediction. However, regardless of the eruption occurred during holidays or not, it is not a matter of principle. Seeing this situation, Pawana returned to remind that all residents should pay attention to the recommendation of the Center for Vulcanology and Geological Hazards (PVMBG). No one should be allowed to climb desperately, following the information that in the near future people will present pakelem ritual to the crater of Mount Agung because the current situation of Mount Agung is actually not safe yet. The PVMBG of Mount Agung within the past few days recorded a gray ash column with a thick intensity moving towards the southwest and west. The eruption was recorded in the seismogram with the maximum amplitude of 25 mm and the duration of about two minutes to three seconds. Currently, the Mount Agung remains at Level III (watch status). The PVMBG recommended there is no climb to the summit of Mount Agung. Besides, no activities are allowed in the danger zone within the radius of 4 km from the crater of Mount Agung top. The residents living and doing activities around the river streams having the upstream at Mount Agung are hoped to be alert against the potential threat of the secondary danger of rain lava flows that can occur especially during the rainy season and the eruption material remains to get exposed in the mountain top area. Homecoming backflow starts to turn busy

The examination was done according to the prevailing fixed procedures at the entrance of Bali. Such inspection is meant to prevent the entry of dangerous goods, criminals and illegal vehicles. As anticipation against the traffic along the GilimanukDenpasar road section, the monitoring post formerly concentrated on the road heading for the harbor was diverted to Penginuman Forest route. GAMELAN or gong arts in Buleleng district remains to survive amid the onslaught of globalization. People getting involved in this art are not only men, but also women. One of them can be found at Gesing village, Banjar. It is named Giri Murthi gamelan troupe founded nine years ago with 30 members. They originate from various circles where most of them are farmers, followed by merchants and civil servants. Initially, according to the group leader, Ni Made Susmaherti, it did not run smoothly. The troupe had to borrow a private gamelan set for exercise. “At that time, it did not yet have the gamelan. Several years later, the village finally purchased,” she said recently.
Dealing with various activities, this housewife never misses the opportunity to practice three times a week. Her hard efforts bear sweet results. The gamelan troupe founded on December 30, 2009 has been able to master various compositions. There are contemporary, Sandya Gita, Teruna Jaya Dance of Buleleng style, Oleg Dance, Margapati Dance and Cendrawasih Dance. More interestingly, it is not only displayed in religious ceremony taking place at the village. However, not infrequently the art troupe is invited to make performance to other areas. “We often get an offer in the manusa yadnya rituals like tooth-filing, marriage and others. Sometimes I am overwhelmed to set the time,” she explained.
Due to its slick appearance, the Buleleng district government gives an offer to perform at the Bali Arts Festival (BAF) for three times, but has not yet been accepted due to her busyness. “On June 25, 2018, we are invited by the Beratan Lake Festival to make performance for the third time,” said this teacher at the SMAN 1 Banjar high school. This art troupe would like to contribute in the preservation of the arts aside from accommodating the potential of women. “At least, the wages earned from the performance for several times can be used to help household needs other than getting an entertainment. THE Pillars of Creation may keep standing tall due to the magnetic field within the starforming region. For the first time, scientists have made a detailed map of the magnetic field inside the pillars, made famous by an iconic 1995 Hubble Space Telescope image (SN Online: 1/6/15). The data reveal that the field runs along the length of each pillar, perpendicular to the magnetic field outside. This configuration may be slowing the destruction of the columns of gas and dust, astronomer Kate Pattle and colleagues suggest in the June 10 Astrophysical Journal Letters. Hot ionized gas called plasma surrounds the pillars, located within the Eagle Nebula about 7,000 lightyears from Earth. The pressure from that plasma could cause the pillars to pinch in at the middle like
an hourglass before breaking up. However, the researchers suggest, the organization of the magnetic field within the pillars could be providing an outward force that resists the plasma’s onslaught, preventing
the columns from disintegrating. The team studied light emitted from the pillars, measuring its polarization — the direction of the wiggling of the light’s electromagnetic waves — using the
James Clerk Maxwell Telescope in Hawaii. Dust grains within the pillars are aligned with each other due to the magnetic field. These aligned particles emit polarized light, allowing the researchers to trace the direction of the magnetic field at various spots. “There are few clear measurements of the magnetic fields in objects like pillars,” says Koji Sugitani of Nagoya City University in Japan. To fully understand the formation of such objects, more
observations are needed, he says. Studying objects where stars are born, such as the pillars, could help scientists better understand the role that magnetic fields may play in star formation (SN: 6/9/18, p. 12). “This is really one of the big unanswered questions,” says Pattle, of National Tsing Hua University in Hsinchu, Taiwan. “We just don’t have a very good idea of whether magnetic fields are important and, if they are, what they are doing.” (net)

According to Head of Communication and Legal Section of Ngurah Rai Airport, Arie Ahsanurrohim, the number of tourists coming to Bali at this time is very stable approximately reaching 17,000-18,000. Moreover, foreign tourist visit grows by 10 percent above the average on usual days. “Domestic tourist arrival averagely reaches 15,000 people. We predict their arrival will happen after the Eid around June 19 or June 20,” he said not long ago. On Eid al Fitr or Friday (Jun. 15), the number of passengers departing from Bali showed an increase. As the data compiled by the Integrated Eid Transport Monitoring Post 2018, the number of passengers reached 15,570 people or 37.05 percent higher when compared to the same period in 2017 only reaching 11,361 people. Meanwhile, the domestic arrival remained at 18,140 people. But this number is smaller -4.16 percent compared to the arrival in 2017 amounting to 18,928 people. The arrival of international passengers also grew 21,727 people. It increased significantly by 20.24 percent if compared to the same period in 2017 only reaching 18,069. Meanwhile, the international departure also increased by 19,494 people or 5.23 percent when compared to the same period in 2017 reaching 18,526 people. Regarding the flight data on day 1 after the Eid or Saturday (Jun. 16), the number of domestic passengers coming to Bali reached 15,962 people. This number decreased -11.57 percent when compared to the same period in 2017 reaching 18,050 people. Meanwhile, domestic departure reached 15,627 people. This number increased 9.59 percent compared to the same period in 2017 namely 14,259 people. Then, international arrivals amounted to 20,141 people. It is an increase of 19.43 percent when compared to the same period in 2017 namely 16,864 people. Meanwhile, similar increase also happened to international departure reaching 21,619 people. This number increased significantly by 29.83 percent when compared to last year’s (2017) reaching 16,652 people. In total, the number of passengers through Ngurah Rai airport on day 1 after holiday increased by 11.43 percent from 65, 825 people in 2017 to 73,349 in 2018. Pursuant to the recapitulation from the opening of the post on June 6 to day 2 after holiday, the number of arrival passenger reached 312,653 people or an increase of 5.72 percent while in 2017 amounted to 295,741 people. LONDON - The British government faces another nerve-rattling test this week as its flagship Brexit legislation is picked over once again by a restive parliament. The upper House of Lords, which wants to keep Britain close to the European Union after the UK leaves in March, will rake over the EU (Withdrawal) Bill on Monday, before it returns to the lower House of Commons on Wednesday. Last week, Prime Minister Theresa May narrowly survived votes in the Commons on changes suggested by the unelected Lords, overturning their amendment seeking to keep Britain aligned to the EU’s customs union. By century’s end, if current trends continue, more than $1 trillion in commercial and private US property may be at risk, “with Florida’s coastal real estate among the most exposed,” said the report. And it’s not because of the increased risk of hurricanes or storm surge. Rather, the danger comes from flooding due to hide tides -- sometimes called sunny day floods, or nuisance flooding -- when water pools into streets, sidewalks, storefronts and homes. “This risk is relatively near-term, well before places go underwater completely, and even in the absence of storms,” said Rachel Cleetus, lead economist and policy director with the Climate and Energy program at the UCS. According to Susila, the offerings or donations paid by every family getting married outside the Panji village will not incriminate every husband. Behind the local norms (dresta), it is believed to be a medium of invoking guidance and mercy for every married persons outside the village so they can live a harmonious life. “Although they have done the naur sesaon, our citizens believe that every piodalan (temple festival) on Tumpek Kuningan they should be coming to say prayers to invoke prosperity and harmony in the family relationship,” he explained. JAKARTA - Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya Bakar has called on the people not to shoot a crocodile which is roaming at Pulau Dayung Pier, Tanjung Priok, Noth Jakarta. The minister said that instead of shooting the animal the people should catch and evacuate it with nets in order to prevent it from attacking the locals. Siti Nurbaya conveyed the matter to the press in a written statement in Jakarta on Sunday related to the 2.5-meter crocodile that appeared at the Pier of Pulau Dayung Island. The minister asked that the animal should not to be shot. However, it is necessary to prepare an immediate evacuation measure so as not to threaten the safety of the surrounding community. “We have asked the naval base (Lantamal) officials not to shoot with the firearms of the animal. The crocodile is now in saline water area that is not its habitat. With saline water, the crocodile can at last die,” said Siti Nurbaya. Being in public waters, the crocodile needs to be evacuated for the public safety. The evacuation measures, said Minister Siti, should be coordinated with Lantamal and Taman Impian Jaya Ancol Management. In addition the conservation agency team is identifying the case. “Today the conservation field team is still on standby with the management of Ancol and Lantamal. Safty nets to the Ancol boundary have also been installed,” she said. Until now, the causes for the crocodile to roam around the beach are now yet known. To that end the minister has asked the conservation agency director general and relevant directors to continue to seek information why the crocodile is there. “Basically, crocodiles are freshwater animals,” said Siti Nurbaya. Nurbaya has requested the relevant ranks to check all the conservation institutions or or captive breeding around Pluit in North Jakarta. “It is very unlikely that the crocodile is in that location because of natural factors,” she said. The crocodile was shot while appearing in Pondok Duyung Pier, Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta, on Friday (June 15). The shot hit two spots on the crocodile`s body. JAKARTA - The Minister of Environment and Forestry Siti Nurbaya Bakar took to the field to monitor the handling of forest and land fires in the country during Eid Fitr or Lebaran holidays.
“In addition to monitoring the reports of forest and land fires (karhutla) every day, I monitored the handling of karhutla yesterday on plane to some areas,” said Siti Nurbaya in a written statement received in Jakarta on Sunday. The air monitoring conducted on the weekend or the second day of Eid Fitr covers some of the fire prone points of forest and land in Sumatra. SEOUL - The two Koreas on Monday discussed forming unified teams for the upcoming Asian Games in Indonesia to extend the burgeoning diplomacy on the peninsula that took off at the Winter Olympics. At their historic summit in April, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in had agreed to joint participation in “international sports events such as the 2018 Asian Games”. On the agenda for the meeting Monday are proposals for a joint march and unified teams for the Asian Games, said Jeon Choong-ryul, South Korea’s chief delegate. The games will be held in Ja-
karta and Palembang from August 18 to September 2. Officials will also discuss details of an inter-Korean basketball match, which was proposed by Kim at his summit with Moon. “As witnessed at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, everyone knows that sports triggered the reconciliation between the South and North,” Jeon said before departing for the meeting. The two Koreas formed their first-ever unified Olympic team -a joint women’s ice hockey squad -- for the 2018 Winter Games. The idea for a joint team at Pyeongchang Olympics initially sparked backlash in the South, on the grounds that Seoul was depriv-
ing its own athletes of the chance to compete on the Olympic stage. Ultimately, the sight of North and South Korean players wearing the same jerseys drew emotive responses from spectators and the squad quickly became an Olympic favourite, despite being thrashed all their matches. SEOUL - The two Koreas on Monday discussed forming unified teams for the upcoming Asian Games in Indonesia to extend the burgeoning diplomacy on the peninsula that took off at the Winter Olympics. At their historic summit in April, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in had agreed to joint participation in “international sports events such as the 2018 Asian Games”. On the agenda for the meeting Monday are proposals for a joint march and unified teams for the Asian Games, said Jeon Choong-ryul, South Korea’s chief delegate. The games will be held in Ja-

MUNICH - Hardliners of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservative bloc are poised Monday to give the German leader an ultimatum to tighten asylum rules or risk pitching the country into a political crisis, as tensions over migration reignite across the EU. Three years after her decision to open Germany’s borders to migrants fleeing war in Syria and Iraq and misery elsewhere, Merkel is still struggling to find a sustainable response to the complaints from her Bavarian allies CSU over her refugee policy. Monday is “destiny day for Angela Merkel. For the government,” wrote the mass-circulation newspaper Bild on Sunday. JAKARTA - Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya Bakar has called on the people not to shoot a crocodile which is roaming at Pulau Dayung Pier, Tanjung Priok, Noth Jakarta. The minister said that instead of shooting the animal the people should catch and evacuate it with nets in order to prevent it from attacking the locals. Siti Nurbaya conveyed the matter to the press in a written statement in Jakarta on Sunday related to the 2.5-meter crocodile that appeared at the Pier of Pulau Dayung Island. The minister asked that the animal should not to be shot. However, it is necessary to prepare an immediate evacuation measure so as not to threaten the safety of the surrounding community. “We have asked the naval base (Lantamal) officials not to shoot with the firearms of the animal. The crocodile is now in saline water area that is not its habitat. With saline water, the crocodile can at last die,” said Siti Nurbaya. Being in public waters, the crocodile needs to be evacuated for the public safety. The evacuation measures, said Minister Siti, should be coordinated with Lantamal and Taman Impian Jaya Ancol Management. In addition the conservation agency team is identifying the case. “Today the conservation field team is still on standby with the management of Ancol and Lantamal. Safty nets to the Ancol boundary have also been installed,” she said. Until now, the causes for the crocodile to roam around the beach are now yet known. To that end the minister has asked the conservation agency director general and relevant directors to continue to seek information why the crocodile is there. “Basically, crocodiles are freshwater animals,” said Siti Nurbaya. Nurbaya has requested the relevant ranks to check all the conservation institutions or or captive breeding around Pluit in North Jakarta. “It is very unlikely that the crocodile is in that location because of natural factors,” she said. The crocodile was shot while appearing in Pondok Duyung Pier, Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta, on Friday (June 15). The shot hit two spots on the crocodile`s body. By century’s end, if current trends continue, more than $1 trillion in commercial and private US property may be at risk, “with Florida’s coastal real estate among the most exposed,” said the report. And it’s not because of the increased risk of hurricanes or storm surge. Rather, the danger comes from flooding due to hide tides -- sometimes called sunny day floods, or nuisance flooding -- when water pools into streets, sidewalks, storefronts and homes. “This risk is relatively near-term, well before places go underwater completely, and even in the absence of storms,” said Rachel Cleetus, lead economist and policy director with the Climate and Energy program at the UCS. According to Susila, the offerings or donations paid by every family getting married outside the Panji village will not incriminate every husband. When entering the current long holiday season, tourists visiting the village tend to increase both local and foreign tourists. The water crisis occurred over the years certainly affects their comfort. “Today,
it’s already crowded here. Water is an important necessity, but hard to get. Automatically, it has an impact on tourism,” explained this former headman for two periods. LONDON - The British government faces another nerve-rattling test this week as its flagship Brexit legislation is picked over once again by a restive parliament. The upper House of Lords, which wants to keep Britain close to the European Union after the UK leaves in March, will rake over the EU (Withdrawal) Bill on Monday, before it returns to the lower House of Commons on Wednesday. Last week, Prime Minister Theresa May narrowly survived votes in the Commons on changes suggested by the unelected Lords, overturning their amendment seeking to keep Britain aligned to the EU’s customs union. THE Pillars of Creation may keep standing tall due to the magnetic field within the starforming region. For the first time, scientists have made a detailed map of the magnetic field inside the pillars, made famous by an iconic 1995 Hubble Space Telescope image (SN Online: 1/6/15). The data reveal that the field runs along the length of each pillar, perpendicular to the magnetic field outside. This configuration may be slowing the destruction of the columns of gas and dust, astronomer Kate Pattle and colleagues suggest in the June 10 Astrophysical Journal Letters. Hot ionized gas called plasma surrounds the pillars, located within the Eagle Nebula about 7,000 lightyears from Earth. The pressure from that plasma could cause the pillars to pinch in at the middle like
an hourglass before breaking up. However, the researchers suggest, the organization of the magnetic field within the pillars could be providing an outward force that resists the plasma’s onslaught, preventing
the columns from disintegrating. The team studied light emitted from the pillars, measuring its polarization — the direction of the wiggling of the light’s electromagnetic waves — using the
James Clerk Maxwell Telescope in Hawaii. Dust grains within the pillars are aligned with each other due to the magnetic field. These aligned particles emit polarized light, allowing the researchers to trace the direction of the magnetic field at various spots. “There are few clear measurements of the magnetic fields in objects like pillars,” says Koji Sugitani of Nagoya City University in Japan. To fully understand the formation of such objects, more
observations are needed, he says. Studying objects where stars are born, such as the pillars, could help scientists better understand the role that magnetic fields may play in star formation (SN: 6/9/18, p. 12). “This is really one of the big unanswered questions,” says Pattle, of National Tsing Hua University in Hsinchu, Taiwan. “We just don’t have a very good idea of whether magnetic fields are important and, if they are, what they are doing.” (net)

IN Central America’s raindrenched forests, leaf-cutting ants collect pieces of leaves on which they grow fungi for food. But the rain can hit hard, especially for a small ant. When leaf-cutting ants sense an incoming shower, they hoof it back to their nests, says a study in the May Insectes Sociaux. Researchers from Argentina, Mexico and Peru tested how one species of leaf-cutting ants, Atta cephalotes, in Costa Rica deals
with rain. The scientists placed hollow boxes filled with wet cotton on ant trails in the forest. When A. cephalotes walked through the boxes, they experienced higher relative humidity, as if it were about to rain. In another experiment, the researchers poured water on plants beside the trail to simulate falling raindrops. Both situations caused the ants to scramble to their nest up to 30 percent faster than normal, from about 1.21 meters per minute
to 1.49. The researchers think that leafcutter ants speed up to keep their cargo and themselves dry, with good reason: A wet leaf fragment weighs more than double a dry one. In the study, when the ants or leaves got wet, the insects readily dropped their harvest and returned to the nest. But by hurrying along at the first hints of rain, the ants could stay dry and hold onto the leaves. (net)

The PVMBG recommended there is no climb to the summit of Mount Agung. Besides, no activities are allowed in the danger zone within the radius of 4 km from the crater of Mount Agung top. The residents living and doing activities around the river streams having the upstream at Mount Agung are hoped to be alert against the potential threat of the secondary danger of rain lava flows that can occur especially during the rainy season and the eruption material remains to get exposed in the mountain top area. GAMELAN or gong arts in Buleleng district remains to survive amid the onslaught of globalization. People getting involved in this art are not only men, but also women. One of them can be found at Gesing village, Banjar. It is named Giri Murthi gamelan troupe founded nine years ago with 30 members. They originate from various circles where most of them are farmers, followed by merchants and civil servants. Initially, according to the group leader, Ni Made Susmaherti, it did not run smoothly. The troupe had to borrow a private gamelan set for exercise. “At that time, it did not yet have the gamelan. Several years later, the village finally purchased,” she said recently.
Dealing with various activities, this housewife never misses the opportunity to practice three times a week. Her hard efforts bear sweet results. The gamelan troupe founded on December 30, 2009 has been able to master various compositions. There are contemporary, Sandya Gita, Teruna Jaya Dance of Buleleng style, Oleg Dance, Margapati Dance and Cendrawasih Dance. More interestingly, it is not only displayed in religious ceremony taking place at the village. However, not infrequently the art troupe is invited to make performance to other areas. “We often get an offer in the manusa yadnya rituals like tooth-filing, marriage and others. Sometimes I am overwhelmed to set the time,” she explained.
Due to its slick appearance, the Buleleng district government gives an offer to perform at the Bali Arts Festival (BAF) for three times, but has not yet been accepted due to her busyness. “On June 25, 2018, we are invited by the Beratan Lake Festival to make performance for the third time,” said this teacher at the SMAN 1 Banjar high school. This art troupe would like to contribute in the preservation of the arts aside from accommodating the potential of women. “At least, the wages earned from the performance for several times can be used to help household needs other than getting an entertainment. At the same time, we can preserve the arts of Bali,” she added. (sos)

Artist buried for three days under busy Australian road SYDNEY - An artist has emerged from three days entombed in a steel box under a busy Australian road in a performance billed as a tribute to victims of totalitarian violence. Mike Parr, 73, fasted during his time underground, with oxygen pumped into the 1.7-metre (5.5-foot) by 2.2-metre container to keep him alive as traffic drove on overhead. He had bedding, water, a waste bucket, a sketchpad and pencils for the stunt in Hobart, part of Tasmania state’s annual Dark Mofo festival, which celebrates darkness through large-scale public art, food, film and music. “The anxiety of the artist’s disappearance is the point of the piece,” organisers said. It was also an attempt to highlight “the shadow cast by the genocidal violence of 19th century British colonialism in Australia”, they added. Parr, who had been buried with only a small light, clambered out of his prison on a ladder late Sunday after heavy machinery carefully removed the asphalt that had sealed him in.
He exited without saying a word or acknowledging a crowd that had gathered in the rain. He is expected to detail his experience in a public forum on Tuesday. “He is an endurance performance artist and he’s been doing this for many years, so his body is quite used to doing this,” Dark Mofo curator Jarrod Rawlins told reporters. While some welcomed the feat as thought-provoking, others were left baffled. “People work a lifetime underground. This goose spends three days in a box doing frig all, calls it art and it makes the news,” an unimpressed Rodney Gibbison said on Facebook. ‘Incredibles 2’ makes heroic N. America box office debut
LOS ANGELES - “Incredibles 2,” the long-awaited return of a quirky animated superhero family from Disney-Pixar, reigned supreme at the North American box office, raking in a record $180 million in its debut, industry estimates showed Sunday. It was the highest ever opening for an animated film in the US and Canada, easily besting the $135 million debut of its Disney-Pixar stablemate, “Finding Dory” (2016). Flooding in southern Myanmar has caused a landslide at a famed Buddhist pagoda, submerged homes and displaced hundreds of people as monsoon rains batter the country.
