NEW YORK - Madonna has brought out some of the biggest fellow names in pop -- and two of her children -- in a new video she debuted Wednesday on the fledgling streaming service Tidal. Tidal -- led by rap mogul Jay-Z with participation of Madonna and other stars -- has promoted exclusives in a bid to win subscribers. But despite a splashy launch on March 30, Tidal trails more established players in the growing field of streaming, led by Spotify. The video -- which also features hip-hop star Nicki Minaj, who collaborated on the song originally -depicts a party atmosphere and was shot at the Standard High Line, a hotel in New York’s Meatpacking District known for its nightclub with a jacuzzi overlooking the city. “Bitch, I’m Madonna” also includes

LOS ANGELES - Academy award-winning duo Charlize Theron and Sean Penn have broken off their engagement and parted ways after a two-year relationship, US media reported Wednesday. The couple was last seen together in May in Cannes, where Theron -- who only recently referred to Penn as the love of her life -- was promoting the premiere of her film “Mad Max.” Theron, 39, decided to cut it off with Penn, 54, whom she started dating in 2013 after the two had known each other as friends for years, Us Weekly reported. MANGUPURA - One of President Joko Widodo (Jokowi)’s development plans is to make Indonesia the central axis of the world’s maritime industry and maritime tourism over the next five years. According to the Director of the Tourist Destination Study Program, for the Bali Tourism Institute (STP) Nusa Dua Bali, Luh Yusni Wiarti, Indonesia in general and Bali in particular, have lot of potential in terms of the development of marine tourism. This area of development needs to be continuously explored in order to optimize this potential and should obviously pay great attention to ecological sustainability and preservation. “The exceptional potential for the development of marine tourism in Bali has yet to be fully explored -whether underwater, on the sea or on the coast. However, this development must be sure to pay attention to ecological balance”, said Wiarti on the sidelines of a seminar regarding the publication of the research results of the Destination Field Research (DFR) entitled “The Existence and Role
of Marine Tourism for Local Communities in the Province of Bali,” which took place in the Widyatula Building of the STP Nusa Dua on Wednesday (June 17). She added that South Bali (Badung), North Bali (Buleleng) and East Bali (Karangasem) have already become a triangle of marine tourism on the island offering with each area offering its own appeal, excellence and unique aspects. For
example, Badung mostly features tourist activities that take place on the water and which are supported by the beauty of some beaches such as Kuta Beach, Pandawa Beach, and Tanjung Benoa. Karangasem offers beautiful beaches and coral reefs, while Buleleng, especially in the area of Menjangan Island, offers an exceptionally beautiful area for underwater tourism including the Pemuteran coral reef.
“Bali’s position as a marine tourist destination is already held in high esteem on the world stage as evidenced by the recognition that Bali has received by being named ‘Best Sea Destination’ several times. Furthermore, underwater, on the water and coastal tourism already exist in all of Bali’s existing marine tourism areas,” said Luh Yusni. However, she added that what needs to be further explored is the potential to develop marine tourism further and also to look at what role local communities can play in this development, whether local people have so far enjoyed any of the benefits for example. Considering the fact that marine
tourism has developed rapidly in Bali, we would expect that local communities would have benefited economically, socially, culturally and environmentally. This is the only way that marine tourism in Bali this will be able to survive. No less important is how to preserve the environment of the areas used for marine tourism. For instance, coral reefs, as well as beaches, must be maintained and preserved as they are both vulnerable to the effects of tourism. “Marine tourism must be more ecofriendly, a clear agenda regarding environmental protection must be the top priority, given that the basis for this tourism is the environment,” she said. Residents protest against environmental pollution and want pigsty closed

AMLAPURA - Two elementary school students in Karangasem are suspected of having been infected by HIV/AIDS. Both of the students who are form Selat and Rendang respectively, are being raised by their grandparents because, sadly their parents have died. A source in Selat said that the condition of one the students is alarming having had both legs amputated after a traffic accident. “While being treated, his blood did not stop flowing. Finally his legs had to be amputated and now he must use prosthetic legs,” said this source. Meanwhile, if the elementary school student from Rendang, does not receive immediate medical treatment, he will face the same fate as his deceased parents. Chief of the Karangasem Health Agency, Gusti Made Tirtayana, when contacted on Wednesday (Jun. 17) said that his agency had not received any data from the Bali Health Agency regarding new cases of HIV/AIDS in Karangasem . The data from the provincial government for Karangasem includes numbers for 2010 to December 2014, and indicates a total of 410 cases. Karangasem is ranked
seventh in Bali in terms of the number of HIV/AIDS. Of the 410 cases in Karangasem, 360 cases or 89.5 percent are caused by heterosexual transmission. In other words the virus was sexually transmitted between men and women. Should there be any new case, the Health Agency particularly through the health center, has prepared a HIV/AIDS counselor. Each health center has two counselors specially trained by the Health Agency for handling HIV/AIDS. They consist of a midwife and nurse. These counselors are also available in clinicc such as the Tulus Ayu Clinic in Amlapura and Tukad Luah Clinic at Tianyar. These counselors have also been trained by the health institution. “In other words, if there are new patients suspected of suffering HIV/AIDS, the symptoms
will have been detected by the health centres or clinics,” he said. Once identified, the health officers will follow-up by filling a report. Monthly reports from hospital are sent to the Bali Health Agency, to the Division of Communicable Diseases. While reports made by public health centers are sent to the Bali Health Office, to the Community Disease Eradication (P2M). “If there are any new reports from any of out twelve health centers, or two clinics, they will be immediately sent to the P2M,” he explained. However, before someone is declared to be suffering HIV/AIDS, it must be confirmed by the Bali Health Agency. The final confirmations from the Bali Health Agency have only been sent to Karangasem for cases reported up until December 2014. (kmb31)
BANGLI - A pig farm located behind SMKN 1 Bangli vocational school, on Gang Rajawali, Jalan Ngurah Rai in Kawan village, was protested against by local residents. The pig farm is accused of polluting the environment and interfering with the comfort and well being of local residents. Residnets have requestd that the Bangli Environment Agency (BLH) closed down the pig business. On Wednesday (Jun. 17), local resident, I Nyoman Artha, revealed that the pig farm located in a residential area, emits a terrible stench and that a number of nearby residents are experiencing symptoms such as; dizziness, nausea, coughing and shortness of breath. The stench generated by the pig farm reached as far as 200 meters. So not only have residents complained, but students from SMN I Bangli, have also joined in the protest given that their school is located just east of the pigsty. “People here are very disturbed by this pig farming. The stench generated makes people, especially small children, experience shortness of breath,” he said. Artha added, apart from polluting the air, pig manure is contaminating the water that flows in the irrigation canal of Subak Aya. Not only that, during time break, the pigs are often noisy and disturb the students. Following numerous complaints about the pig farm, Artha and others appealed to the business owner, I Nengah Sucita to do something about these problems. However these appeals have been ignored. “Appeals have been made frequently and he promised to respond but there has never been any follow up,” said Artha. The irresponsive attitude of the pig farm owner is considered to be selfish and has caused local residents to take a stand by sending a letter to the Bangli Environment Agency. The letter No.01/RJW/KW/2015 signed by a number of residents stated the objection of residents to the pigsty and asked the agency to put a stop the pig farming activities. “We have sent a letter to the Environment Agency to follow up on our verbal complaints. We want the pig farm shut down,” he said. Meanwhile, the Head of the BLH Bangli, I Made Alit Parwata, confirmed that they had received the report from the residents and added that he had already conducted a site inspection along with the Bangli Municipal Police. Though there is a request to shut down the pig farm, Parwata said that they cannot act immediately. As a first step, the pigsty owner will be summoned on Thursday and given a warning and guidance. During monitoring, the pig farm did indeed exuded a very pungent odor. Parwata was also dismayed to find that the pig business that was established six years ago and which is raising 22 heads of pig placed in six pigsties has not been equipped with a waste water treatment plant (WWTP). “We have just received the report. Tomorrow (Thursday) we will summon the pig farm owner to ask for an explanation. We will provide him with coaching or guidance before proceeding to the next step,” he said. To reduce the complaints from residents (about the stench), the business owner needs to install a WWTP and must reduce the number of pigs, in order to diminish the odor generated. Besides, the business owner must also manage the farm properly. Otherwise, the BLH will not hesitate to close it. “The owner must be able to manage the farm well and equip it with a WWTP. If this is neglected, we will close the business,” he said. (kmb45)

Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Bali, as Indonesia’s main tourist destination is renowned throughout the world for its image as paradise island with a hospitable, courteous and religious population. This image has been tarnished by the barbaric behaviour of the murder suspects who settled here.” Although the suspect is not a native to Bali, the international community through the media still consider him a resident of Bali. For this reason according to Anom, police must investigate the incident thoroughly. As well, the court must give the most severe sentencing to murderer of the second-grade student of SDN 12 Sanur elementary school in order to provide a deterrent to others. The murder of Engeline is allegedly heavily linked to a large inheritance that this little girl would have received. “It is crazy time when humans deify money. They do not adhere
to monotheism (belief in God Almighty—Ed), but adhere to money-theism (money is God—Ed). As a result, anything can be done for the sake of money -in order to live satisfyingly and with glamour in this mundane world. In the future, the government along with society should be more selective about accepting migrants who have unclear moral backgrounds even if they are entrepreneurs, especially foreigners who get married to Indonesian residents and adopt a child unlawfully,” he said. DENPASAR - The Bali Police have summoned a criminologist from the University of Indonesia (UI) Prof. Dr Ronny Rahman Nitibaskara, as an expert witness, to assist in the investigation of the alleged murder of Engeline. “The expert witness will help consolidate the investigation,” Chief of Bali Police Inspector General Ronny Sompie stated on Thursday. An expert witness is a witness, who by virtue of education, training, skill, or experience, is believed to have the expertise and specialized knowledge in a particular subject beyond that of the average person, sufficient that others may officially and legally rely on the witness’ specialized opinion about an evidence or fact issue within the scope of his expertise, referred to as the expert
opinion as an assistance to the fact-finder. “If we conduct this investigation scientifically and without a testimony from the expert, the argument may be denied in the court,” he explained. Nitibaskara, who is also a professor of Anthropology, will analyze the testimony of the suspects. Based on UI’s official website, Nitibaskara was born on July 3, 1943, and graduated in Criminology from the Faculty of Social and Political Science of UI in 1970. He received his doctorate in Anthropology from the same faculty in 1993. Deceptive answers will trigger physiological responses that can be differentiated from the responses associated with nondeceptive answers. Engeline was found buried in the backyard of her house on Wednesday, June 10, after she was reported missing on May 16. The case has drawn significant concern from numerous quarters across the country, and the police have been urged to thoroughly investigate the case.
Besides arresting Agus and Megawe, the police have also arrested Ivone, one of Megawe’s children. Megawe and Ivone were arrested at a villa in Canggu in the district of Badung early on Sunday morning and were immediately sent to a detention cell at 4:35 a.m. local time. According to Sompie, the police named Megawe as a suspect based on the results of the developments in Engeline’s case following the confession by Agus, the suspect behind the child’s murder during his questioning as a witness in the case of child negligence. Although Megawe was named as a suspect in a different case, Sompie said there was a possibility that investigations could later trace back links to Engeline’s homicide case. (ant)

Engeline tragedy tarnishes image of Bali tourism
LONDON - Men dressed in lace by Burberry, Christopher Kane’s colourful tweeds, and 1980s-style footwear by Jimmy Choo: London’s men’s fashion week bowed out Monday with plenty of daring designs. Lace was not just for women at Burberry, where the material leant a romantic feel to white shirts and finished straight-cut, mid-length coats. But Christopher Bailey, the luxury British brand’s chief creative and chief executive officer, admitted the style is not for everyone. Certain men would wear lace, others not, Bailey said, adding that in a fashion show there was something for all tastes, and he personally liked the poetic feel that it brought. Burberry showed off its spring/ summer 2016 collection k at Perk’s Field, next to Kensington Palace, the official residence of Prince William and his wife Kate, giving the occasion a garden party feel. Among those on the guest list were actor Samuel L. Jackson and Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton. Using black, pale grey and even mustard tones, Bailey has reinterpreted the label’s signature style. The Chesterfield coats boasted a relaxed and elegant feel, and bore a lace collar. As for their famous trench coats, they are made from silk and light wool and adorned with motifs. There were also ideas drawn from the streets, with jogging pants in cashmere, and bomber jackets with quilted panels. Just as at Burberry, a relaxed style that nonetheless respected dress codes was also in evidence at Jimmy Choo. The luxury shoemaker presented its new collection at the Seymour Leisure Centre in London, in a sports hall converted into a skateboard park for the occasion. The collection was a meeting between urban and traditional styles, said Sandra Choi, the brand’s creative director. The geometric designs and vivid colours on the shoes and trainers were a throwback to the 1980s and the Memphis Group, the postmodern Italian design and architecture group. Gunaksa Pier to be provisionally operated in 2016
SEMARAPURA - Gunaksa Pier is ascertained to be in operation in early 2016 to serve crossing services from mainland Klungkung to Nusa Penida. However, the operation is just limited to provide a berth for the Nusa Jaya Abadi roro vessel. In the meantime, the other facilities will utilize the emergency building and dock entry through the winding path of the former quarry location. Although it can be operated, the Gunaksa Pier is still threatened by flash flood from the streams of the Unda River. floods in case of the Unda River stream overflows. “Pier area is prone to get eroded as have not been reinforced. Prior to the reinforcement, workmanship of the building in the area cannot be worked on. Possibly it will build an emergency building only,” he explained. For the moment, the road access to the pier remains to use the existing road through the former quarry area. Later on, the access will apply backfilling and bridge system. The budget worth IDR 40 billion for the road access to
the pier from central government may not be entirely absorbed considering the time available for processing is limited. It will need four bridges to open up the access to Gunaksa Pier with an overall length reaches 515 meters of the total length of 1.755 km of road. “For those wishing to go to Gunaksa Pier can take the emergency entrance from the east end of the bridge on Jalan Bypass Ida Bagus Mantra, because the main road is still in the planning process,” said Sukasta. BANGLI - In addition to tangerine farming, oyster mushroom cultivation lately began to proliferate in Bangli County. Unfortunately, the very high demand for the mushroom cannot be met by local farmers because of limited production as experienced by Luh Martina, a mushroom farmer from Bunutin village, Bangli. “The demand for mushrooms is very high, reaching 20 kg every day, but I can only produce five kg only. As a result, I am overwhelmed. The price is IDR 20,000 per kg,” she said. The women having been two years in the business revealed that in addition to mushroom being ready to be processed, she is also flooded with the increasingly soaring demand for mushroom seeds. With the price set at IDR 3,200 per spawn bag, every day she is able to sell 100 to 200 bags. “The demand for mushroom spawn is also high. Fortunately, I am able to fulfill it,” she said. Oyster mushroom demand is not only coming from Bangli region, but also from other regions such as Klungkung and Gianyar. Similarly, the seed marketing has penetrated the region of Karangasem. “Many buyers of mushroom and its seeds are from outside the region. So, it is not only from Bangli,” she said. Aside from Martina, another mushroom grower also being flooded with the orders is I Putu Karmawan from Peninjoan village, Tembuku subdistrict. He expressed that the demand for oyster mushroom every day reaches 50 to 60 kg, while his production is only about 30 to 40 kg. “The demand for oyster mushroom is very high. Unfortunately, I cannot meet the entire demand,” he said. Related to the demand for seeds, he also experienced similar condition as that of Martina. Every month, the demand reaches 20,000 spawn bags, but he is only able to produce 9,000 bags to 12,000 bags. “Similarly, I cannot meet the demand for seeds, where the demand is very high. Malaysian navy in contact with pirates on hijacked tanker
KUALA LUMPUR - A Malaysian naval vessel has made contact with the pirates onboard hijacked tanker Orkim Harmony and is trying to persuade them to surrender, a maritime official said on Thursday. The tanker as of noon (0400 GMT) was in Vietnamese waters headed south with the Malaysian navy vessel KD Terengganu and a maritime ship in pursuit. Both the crew and the cargo onboard the tanker are safe, and the navy is negotiating with the robbers through the captain of the Orkim Harmony, said Vice Admiral Ahmad Puzi, deputy director general of the operations unit of the Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), in a press briefing. “From our experience, as long as there’s no situation that alarms the criminals, the crew will be safe,” Ahmad Puzi said. “We are using a soft approach first, trying to advise them to surrender,” he said, adding that the mood of the negotiations is “good”. The 7,300 deadweight tonne (DWT) Orkim Harmony was hijacked on June 11 about 30 nautical miles from the Johor port of Tanjung Sedili carrying around 50,000 barrels of RON95 gasoline, in the second such incident in the same area this month. The Orkim Harmony is operated by Malaysia’s Orkim Ship Management. On board is a crew of 22, including 16 Malaysians, five Indonesians and one Myanmar national.
After the tanker was hijacked, the pirates repainted the ship and changed the name to Kim Harmon. Malaysia’s Chief of Navy Admiral Abdul Aziz Jaafar said on his Twitter account that at least eight perpetrators were on board the Orkim Harmony armed with pistols and machetes. Malaysian state oil firm Petronas told Reuters that the Orkim Harmony was carrying 6,000 metric tonnes of product from its Malacca refinery to the port of Kuantan on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia for distribution. It said “all necessary measures are being taken to ensure undisrupted fuel supply to consumers in the East Coast region.” Earlier this month, a 7,100 DWT oil tanker, Orkim Victory, carrying diesel loaded from Petronas was hijacked on June 4 in the same area and on the same route. The Orkim Victory was later released by the hijackers after about 770 metric tonnes (6,000 barrels) of its cargo had been siphoned off. It will, however, be difficult for the pirates to siphon off the gasoline from the Harmony as it is highly flammable and they are likely looking for proper facilities to do a ship-to-ship transfer, Ahmad Puzi had told reporters on Monday. BERLIN — Syria overtook Afghanistan to become the world’s biggest source of refugees last year, while the number of people forced from their homes by conflicts worldwide rose to a record 59.5 million, the United Nations’ refugee agency said Thursday. Pointing to crises in Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Burundi and elsewhere, U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres said he doesn’t expect any improvement in 2015. “There is a multiplication of new crises,” he said. “The IraqSyria crisis gained the dimension of a mega one ... and at the same time the old crises have no solutions.” The report comes at a time when Europe is grappling with how to deal with a flood of new migrants crossing the Mediterranean to escape fighting in Syria, Libya and elsewhere. UNHCR estimated that a total of 59.5 million people worldwide had been displaced by conflict by the end of last year — including 38.2 million displaced within their own countries. That was up from 51.2 million in 2013 — the previous highest since the U.N. began collecting numbers in the early 1950s. Syria alone accounted for 11.6 million of those people, the biggest single figure. The agency counted nearly 3.9
million Syrian refugees in 107 countries last year, the fourth year of the country’s civil war. That made it the leading source of refugees — pushing Afghanistan, which had held that status for more than 30 years, down to second place with 2.6 million refugees. Syria’s northern neighbor, Turkey, became the world’s biggest refugee host with 1.59 million refugees. Pakistan, which had held that position for more than a decade, was second with 1.51 million. Over the course of last year, only 126,800 refugees returned to their home countries — the lowest number since 1983. The countries to which most people returned were Congo, Mali and Afghanistan. Guterres said he was alarmed by “a staggering acceleration” in the number of people being forced from their homes over recent years. Speaking in Istanbul on Thursday, he singled out richer countries such as those in Europe and the Persian Gulf as he appealed for “all countries in the world to have
their doors open.” He said they also should offer more legal avenues for people who need protection to enter. Turkey’s willingness to open its borders “has a special meaning in a world where so many borders are closed or restricted, and where new walls are being built or announced,” Guterres said, speaking the day after Hungary said it was planning to build a fence along its border with Serbia to keep out a flow of migrants. For many of those who have fled, home still beckons. Maher Al Khedrawi, one of the many Syrians who have left for Turkey, said in a recent interview with The Associated Press that he looked forward to returning to his country, a sentiment he said was shared by millions of others. The losses come despite another advance on Wall Street, while investors are keeping track of Greece’s troubled bailout talks as Europe’s leaders are warned of the dire consequences of failing to reach a deal. Tokyo sank 1.13 percent, or 228.45 points, to close at 19,990.82, while in late trade Hong Kong was 0.43 percent lower. Shanghai tumbled 3.55 percent in the afternoon on liquidity fears as several new firms prepare to list while profit-takers also moved in after a surge in the index over the past year that has seen it pile on about 140 percent. Sydney fell 1.26 percent, or 70.5 points, to close at 5,524.9 but Seoul ended 0.34 percent higher, adding 7.02 points to 2,041.88. After a two-day meeting the Fed on Wednesday held off hiking rates but altered its outlook for future rises, expecting a lower upward curve than previously forecast. While policymakers kept unchanged their outlook for a 0.625 percent rate for the end of this year, the end-2016 rate was 1.625 percent, down 20 basis points from the March estimate, and 2.875 percent by the end of 2017, which was 25 basis points lower. In a news conference afterwards, the bank’s head Janet Yellen said its first interest rate hike in nine years would likely come “later this year”. However, she added: “My colleagues and I would like to see more decisive evidence that a moderate pace of economic growth will be sustained, so the conditions in the labour market will continue to improve and inflation will move back to two percent.” The prospect of lower borrowing costs boosted US shares. The Dow rose 0.17 percent, the S&P 500 gained 0.19 percent and the Nasdaq put on 0.18 percent. “Yellen was dovish in the press conference,” said David Buckle, London-based head of quantitative research at Fidelity Worldwide Investment, told Bloomberg News. “She was at pains to point out that monetary policy will likely remain highly accommodative for a long time after the first rate rise.” (afp)

Rejang Legong: a dance presentation of angels to Gods
AMLAPURA - It has become a tradition for Jasri customary villagers of Karangasem to present various dances like the Rejang, Abuang and Legong in Bale Agung temple. These sacred dances are part of a ritual series known as Meprani in conjunction with the celebration of Galungan and Kuningan feast day. All villagers present pekenak to Ulun Busali deity as venerated gods in Bale Agung temple. According to Chief of Jasri customary village, I Nyoman Sutirtayasa, the Rejang, Abuang and Legong dance symbolized the sacrifice and an expression of gratitude for the abundance of worldly endowment to deities who would return to Java Island. “These dances are meant to entertain and please the deities because it is believed when returning to Java they will bestow graces of prosperity. On that account, it will give the source of life for Balinese
people,” he said. Local people believed, explained Sutirtayasa, the series of dharma victory day (Galungan-Kuningan) was initiated since the deities came down from Java to Bali namely on Sugian Jawa and they were ready to receive devotee’s worship. Furthermore, they were presented with oblation on Galungan and Kuningan. Three days after Kuningan, the deities were presented with aci prani accompanied with the performance of Rejang, Abuang and Legong dance. The dances were performed by daa (virgin girls) from 33 customary hamlets existing in the area. They danced hand in hand clockwise on the courtyard of Bale Agung temple accompanied with gamelan music. They danced with graceful movement in attires with typical teterek accessories on the back and headdress embellished with young
banana leaf ornament. More interestingly, the Rejang dance with distinctive movement was never taught or learned by the daa. However, when it was time to perform the dance they would be able to do it. At the end of the Meprani ritual it was marked with the disposal of used ritual paraphernalia of Kuningan celebration to the sea. A senior figure of local customary village, I Nyoman Putra Adnyana, said that presentation of such sacred dances like the Rejang, Abuang and Legong was originated from the stage of Rejang dance in Puseh temple. However, it was then also presented to deity abiding in the Bale Agung temple. “Theologically, the ishta devata (venerated gods) abiding in Bale Agung is the Tri Murti symbolizing the omnipotence of God in his manifestation as the Generator, Operator and Destroyer,” he said. Airbus edges Boeing in orders race at Paris air show LE BOURGET — Airbus glided past U.S. rival Boeing to take top honors in their annual competition to sell commercial jets at the Paris Air Show, according to final tallies that together amounted to over $107 billion in business. The announcements Thursday capped four days of deal-making at the biennial air show, when top executives from the world’s largest airlines clink champagne glasses and write whopping checks as test pilots fly demonstrations of hightech aircraft at Paris’ normally sleepy Le Bourget airfield. Airbus racked up $57 billion worth of business for 421 aircraft. The announcement of a provisional deal by European low-cost carrier Wizz Air for 110 A321neos — worth more than $12.5 billion at list prices — put the Toulouse, France-based plane maker over the top Thursday against Boeing in financial terms. It was the show’s single biggest order. Chicago-based Boeing tallied orders and commitments for 331 planes worth $50.2 billion. Its biggest deal was with Dutch leasing company AerCap for 100 737MAX-8 planes, worth up to $10.7 billion at list prices. Customers routinely negotiate discounts off those list prices. Overall, business was not as good as in previous years. Last year, at Britain’s Farnborough Air Show, which trades the spotlight with Paris from year to year as the site of Europe’s premier aviation event,
Airbus clinched orders and commitments for 486 aircraft valued at $75 billion. But Boeing won more this year than last, when it landed business worth $40.2 billion for 201 planes. Industry watchers had been expecting a modest haul of orders as airlines pull back from a recordbreaking spate of plane buying in recent years. INDONESIA Cliff slide at Indonesia resort kills 4, tide hampers rescue
YOGYAKARTA — Efforts to rescue people buried by a cliff collapse at an Indonesian beach resort on Java were hampered Thursday by high tide. The coordinator of the local search and rescue agency said four people died in the collapse Wednesday and at least four others may still be buried in the debris of the 15-meter-high (49foot-high) cliff. Marjono, the rescue official, said one of two survivors of the cliff slide at Sadranan beach in Yogyakarta’s Gunungkidul dis-
trict, was seriously injured. The victims are believed to be a group of visitors including two families from a neighboring district. Aleksandar Vucic said “walls and fences” are not a solution for the crisis that has seen tens of thousands of migrants from the Middle East and Africa crossing the western Balkans, trying to reach the European Union as they flee wars and poverty in their home countries. Announcing the plans, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said Wednesday the 4-meter (13-foot) -high fence along the 175-kilometer (109-mile) southern border with Serbia wouldn’t contravene any of Hungary’s international legal obligations. The prospect of a barrier leaves a bitter taste in Serbia whose leadership is keen to become part of the EU rather than be cut off from it.
“We don’t want to live in an Auschwitz,” Vucic said, referring to the Nazi-run World War II concentration camp. He told state TV that Serbia must not be blamed for the refugee crisis, because it is only a transit country on the migrants’ route from EU countries like Greece and Bulgaria. “We don’t know what this is all about,” Vucic said, adding that he will discuss the fence plans with Hungary and EU officials. “We are not guilty and all of a sudden a wall is to be built.” EU spokeswoman Natasha Bertaud also was critical of Hungary’s plans. The EU “does not promote the use of fences and encourages member states to use alternative measures,” she said. “We have
only recently taken down walls in Europe; we should not be putting them up.” What has become known as “the Western Balkans route” is seeing a dramatic increase in refugees and migrants, mostly from Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq. Some are registering for asylum in the Balkans when they get caught, others are heading onward. So far this year, more than 53,000 people have requested asylum in Hungary, up from under 43,000 in 2014 and 2,150 in 2012. JAKARTA — Two migrants said they witnessed an Australian official hand cash to the crew of a people-smuggling boat to take its passengers back to Indonesia. The allegation of payments to people-smugglers has strained relations between Indonesia and Australia, which has a policy of turning back all migrants who arrive by boat. Migrants escaping poverty or oppression use Indonesia as a transit point for the perilous journey in often barely seaworthy vessels to Australia. Earlier this month, police in Indonesia’s East Nusa Tenggara province reported that the boat’s captain and five crew members, who are detained on remote Rote island, had about $30,000 in cash. The group said they were paid to return the 65 migrants to Indonesia after being intercepted by an
Australian navy ship on May 20. One of the migrants in an interview broadcast Wednesday on Indonesian television said he saw U.S. dollars wrapped in plastic handed over to at least four members of the crew by an Australian official. “They don’t want to help us. They want the crew to turn us back to Indonesia with that money,” said the man, a Bangladeshi identified as Ainul by MetroTV. Australia’s Prime Minister Tony Abbott has sidestepped questions about the incident but has said Australian authorities are being “incredibly creative” in their response to human trafficking. Colombia’s Carlos Bacca, who shoved Neymar from behind, also was shown a red card. Bacca apparently was upset after the Brazilian seemed to head-butt teammate Murillo during a discussion. Neymar’s yellow card earlier in the match was his second of the tournament, which was already enough to suspend him from the final group match. Brazil could have secured a spot in the quarterfinals with a win over Colombia, but now it will decide its future against Venezuela on Sunday. “Colombia showed that it is a very experienced team,” Brazil coach Dunga said. “Our players at times got caught in their provocations and forgot to play football. Brazil has to play football. Brazil can’t go to war, we have to focus on what we do best, which is play football.” The result ended Colombia’s 24year winless drought against the
five-time world champion, and left Colombia, Brazil and Venezuela tied atop Group C with three points each. Venezuela and Peru, however, have a game in hand; they will play their second group match on Thursday. If Peru beats Venezuela, all four teams will enter the final round with three points each. The top two teams in each of the three groups advance, plus the two-best third-place finishers. Off the rebound, the ball touched Neymar’s hand, prompting the referee to show him a yellow card. Neymar complained, saying that the touch was involuntary. He had already received a yellow card in the opening game against Peru, when he played extremely well and led Brazil to a 2-1 come-from-behind victory. “The referees have to respect Neymar because he is always getting hit,” Brazil midfielder Willian said. “It happened again today, and he was the one ejected.” Brazil had another great chance to score in the 58th, after Murillo misplayed a pass back to Ospina and the ball ended with Roberto Firmino inside the area, but the forward missed the open net, sending his shot over the crossbar. FIFA’s Valcke hires U.S. lawyer for corruption probe
NEW YORK - FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke has hired a prominent New York defense attorney in the face of corruption investigations that have roiled the world soccer body, a person familiar with the matter said on Wednesday. Defense lawyer Barry Berke has been hired to represent Valcke, who is FIFA President Sepp Blatter’s top lieutenant. Berke, a partner at Kramer Levin
Naftalis & Frankel, most recently represented Michael Steinberg, a portfolio manager at Steven A. Cohen’s SAC Capital Advisors hedge fund. Steinberg was sentenced last year to 3-1/2 years in prison after being convicted of engaging in insider trading. U.S. prosecutors believe that Valcke was involved in $10 million in FIFA bank transactions that are a key part of the investigation, a
source said in early June. He has not been accused of wrongdoing. Valcke said last week that while he had signed off on the transactions he had done nothing wrong, adding that allegations against him were “insanity”. Reuters reported earlier that Blatter has also hired a high-powered U.S. lawyer to represent him, according to a person familiar with the matter. (rtr)

Vidal appears in court; gets 4 month driving ban after DUI SANTIAGO — Chile’s star midfielder Arturo Vidal was banned from driving for four months by a Chilean judge on Wednesday after he crashed his Ferrari while driving under the influence of alcohol. Despite the judge’s ruling, Chile national team coach Jorge Sampaoli said Vidal can continue to play for the Chile, which is among the favorites in on-going Copa America, the South American championship. “I don’t like to remove or exclude someone for making a mistake,” Sampaoli told a news conference. He said he couldn’t control what players did in “their rest time.” Vidal, known as “King Arthur” in Chile, appeared in court on Wednesday after being held overnight in a local jail. He suffered minor injuries in the crash, as did his wife, who was a passenger. Later he offered a teary apology. “I want say I’m sorry to my teammates, to the coaching staff, to the people — to the entire country,” Vidal said. “I want to say I’m sorry, too, to the other people involved in an accident that was my fault.” The court said Vidal showed 1.21 grams of alcohol in his blood
per liter. Any level above 0.8 can be punished by up to three year in prison. Vidal scored twice on Monday in Chile’s 3-3 draw with Mexico and is the leading scorer in the tournament with three goals. A photo of the accident showed heavy damage to the left-front of the Ferrari, and the airbags apparently deployed. The Juventus midfielder has had discipline problems in the past. Former Chile national team coach Claudio Borghi banned Vidal and four other players for 20 games after they showed up at training in “an inappropriate state.” The ban was eventually reduced to 10 games. Argentine coach Sampaoli steered away from blaming Vidal and suggested there are times to be lenient. “If I thought this would affect my authority, I wouldn’t have done it,” Sampaoli said. “Something happened we couldn’t hide,” he added. “I hope this group understands I didn’t act this way because it’s Vidal. Steinberg was sentenced last year to 3-1/2 years in prison after being convicted of engaging in insider trading. U.S. prosecutors believe that Valcke was involved in $10 million in FIFA bank transactions that are a key part of the investigation, a
source said in early June. He has not been accused of wrongdoing. Valcke said last week that while he had signed off on the transactions he had done nothing wrong, adding that allegations against him were “insanity”. Reuters reported earlier that Blatter has also hired a high-powered U.S. lawyer to represent him, according to a person familiar with the matter. (rtr)

That was enough for Les Bleues to top Group F on goal difference ahead of England, which beat Colombia 2-1. Vidal appears in court; gets 4 month driving ban after DUI SANTIAGO — Chile’s star midfielder Arturo Vidal was banned from driving for four months by a Chilean judge on Wednesday after he crashed his Ferrari while driving under the influence of alcohol. Despite the judge’s ruling, Chile national team coach Jorge Sampaoli said Vidal can continue to play for the Chile, which is among the favorites in on-going Copa America, the South American championship. “I don’t like to remove or exclude someone for making a mistake,” Sampaoli told a news conference. He said he couldn’t control what players did in “their rest time.” Vidal, known as “King Arthur” in Chile, appeared in court on Wednesday after being held overnight in a local jail. He suffered minor injuries in the crash, as did his wife, who was a passenger. Later he offered a teary apology. “I want say I’m sorry to my teammates, to the coaching staff, to the people — to the entire country,” Vidal said. “I want to say I’m sorry, too, to the other people involved in an accident that was my fault.” The court said Vidal showed 1.21 grams of alcohol in his blood
per liter. Any level above 0.8 can be punished by up to three year in prison. Vidal scored twice on Monday in Chile’s 3-3 draw with Mexico and is the leading scorer in the tournament with three goals. A photo of the accident showed heavy damage to the left-front of the Ferrari, and the airbags apparently deployed. The Juventus midfielder has had discipline problems in the past. Former Chile national team coach Claudio Borghi banned Vidal and four other players for 20 games after they showed up at training in “an inappropriate state.” The ban was eventually reduced to 10 games. Argentine coach Sampaoli steered away from blaming Vidal and suggested there are times to be lenient. “If I thought this would affect my authority, I wouldn’t have done it,” Sampaoli said. “Something happened we couldn’t hide,” he added. “I hope this group understands I didn’t act this way because it’s Vidal. No sooner had Honda motorsport chief Yasuhisa Arai told AUTOSPORT on Friday “a positive step” had been taken with upgrades than his team of engineers were being forced to replace various parts of the power unit. Two-metres tall Anderson hurled down 22 aces, the last one on match point, to send Wawrinka spinning to his first loss since he beat world number one Novak Djokovic in spellbinding fashion in the Roland Garros final earlier this month. Airbus edges Boeing in orders race at Paris air show LE BOURGET — Airbus glided past U.S. rival Boeing to take top honors in their annual competition to sell commercial jets at the Paris Air Show, according to final tallies that together amounted to over $107 billion in business. The announcements Thursday capped four days of deal-making at the biennial air show, when top executives from the world’s largest airlines clink champagne glasses and write whopping checks as test pilots fly demonstrations of hightech aircraft at Paris’ normally sleepy Le Bourget airfield. Airbus racked up $57 billion worth of business for 421 aircraft. The announcement of a provisional deal by European low-cost carrier Wizz Air for 110 A321neos — worth more than $12.5 billion at list prices — put the Toulouse, France-based plane maker over the top Thursday against Boeing in financial terms. It was the show’s single biggest order. Chicago-based Boeing tallied orders and commitments for 331 planes worth $50.2 billion. Its biggest deal was with Dutch leasing company AerCap for 100 737MAX-8 planes, worth up to $10.7 billion at list prices. Customers routinely negotiate discounts off those list prices. Overall, business was not as good as in previous years. Last year, at Britain’s Farnborough Air Show, which trades the spotlight with Paris from year to year as the site of Europe’s premier aviation event,
Airbus clinched orders and commitments for 486 aircraft valued at $75 billion. But Boeing won more this year than last, when it landed business worth $40.2 billion for 201 planes. Industry watchers had been expecting a modest haul of orders as airlines pull back from a recordbreaking spate of plane buying in recent years. High fuel prices up until a year ago had prompted airlines to invest massively in a new generation of more fuel-economical aircraft like the Airbus A320neo and the Boeing 737MAX. Thursday’s announcements wrapped up the press-and-industryonly part of the air show, which now opens to the public from Friday to Sunday. Airbus’ orders count appeared to surpass its own expectations. On Tuesday, Airbus CEO Fabrice Bregier had told The Associated Press that he predicted about 200 orders or commitments by the end of the show. While Airbus executives have forecast high demand for the company’s A380 superjumbo to serve growing megacities, the company booked no new orders for the massive 500-seater. The last order for the jet dates back to last year. Boeing forecasts demand for 38,050 airplanes over the next 20 years, and says 26,730 of those will be single-aisle jets. INDONESIA Cliff slide at Indonesia resort kills 4, tide hampers rescue
YOGYAKARTA — Efforts to rescue people buried by a cliff collapse at an Indonesian beach resort on Java were hampered Thursday by high tide. The coordinator of the local search and rescue agency said four people died in the collapse Wednesday and at least four others may still be buried in the debris of the 15-meter-high (49foot-high) cliff. Marjono, the rescue official, said one of two survivors of the cliff slide at Sadranan beach in Yogyakarta’s Gunungkidul dis-
trict, was seriously injured. The victims are believed to be a group of visitors including two families from a neighboring district. Based on information from witnesses, at least 10 people were in the immediate vicinity of the cliff when it collapsed. Marjono, who goes by one name, said all those killed were men. (ap)

Aleksandar Vucic said “walls and fences” are not a solution for the crisis that has seen tens of thousands of migrants from the Middle East and Africa crossing the western Balkans, trying to reach the European Union as they flee wars and poverty in their home countries. Announcing the plans, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said Wednesday the 4-meter (13-foot) -high fence along the 175-kilometer (109-mile) southern border with Serbia wouldn’t contravene any of Hungary’s international legal obligations. The prospect of a barrier leaves a bitter taste in Serbia whose leadership is keen to become part of the EU rather than be cut off from it.
“We don’t want to live in an Auschwitz,” Vucic said, referring to the Nazi-run World War II concentration camp. He told state TV that Serbia must not be blamed for the refugee crisis, because it is only a transit country on the migrants’ route from EU countries like Greece and Bulgaria. “We don’t know what this is all about,” Vucic said, adding that he will discuss the fence plans with Hungary and EU officials. “We are not guilty and all of a sudden a wall is to be built.” EU spokeswoman Natasha Bertaud also was critical of Hungary’s plans. The EU “does not promote the use of fences and encourages member states to use alternative measures,” she said. “We have
only recently taken down walls in Europe; we should not be putting them up.” What has become known as “the Western Balkans route” is seeing a dramatic increase in refugees and migrants, mostly from Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq. Some are registering for asylum in the Balkans when they get caught, others are heading onward. So far this year, more than 53,000 people have requested asylum in Hungary, up from under 43,000 in 2014 and 2,150 in 2012. Migrants say they witnessed Australian payment to boat crew
JAKARTA — Two migrants said they witnessed an Australian official hand cash to the crew of a people-smuggling boat to take its passengers back to Indonesia. The allegation of payments to people-smugglers has strained relations between Indonesia and Australia, which has a policy of turning back all migrants who arrive by boat. Migrants escaping poverty or oppression use Indonesia as a transit point for the perilous journey in often barely seaworthy vessels to Australia. Earlier this month, police in Indonesia’s East Nusa Tenggara province reported that the boat’s captain and five crew members, who are detained on remote Rote island, had about $30,000 in cash. The group said they were paid to return the 65 migrants to Indonesia after being intercepted by an
Australian navy ship on May 20. One of the migrants in an interview broadcast Wednesday on Indonesian television said he saw U.S. dollars wrapped in plastic handed over to at least four members of the crew by an Australian official. “They don’t want to help us. They want the crew to turn us back to Indonesia with that money,” said the man, a Bangladeshi identified as Ainul by MetroTV. Australia’s Prime Minister Tony Abbott has sidestepped questions about the incident but has said Australian authorities are being “incredibly creative” in their response to human trafficking. A second man identified as Sri Lankan by the Indonesian broadcaster said the handover of money was visible to anyone on the boat. “They asked the crew to bring
us back to Indonesia with that money,” he said. “It was not small money, everybody saw it.” On Tuesday, Indonesia’s Vice President Jusuf Kalla said if Australia is paying people smugglers it would amount to “bribery.” He said the Indonesian government is seeking clarification from Canberra. Australia’s boat stance has reduced the numbers of migrants attempting to reach its shores by sea and is popular with the Australian public, giving the conservative ruling party a rare policy triumph. Asia markets mostly lower, dollar hit by dovish Fed

The losses come despite another advance on Wall Street, while investors are keeping track of Greece’s troubled bailout talks as Europe’s leaders are warned of the dire consequences of failing to reach a deal. Tokyo sank 1.13 percent, or 228.45 points, to close at 19,990.82, while in late trade Hong Kong was 0.43 percent lower. Shanghai tumbled 3.55 percent in the afternoon on liquidity fears as several new firms prepare to list while profit-takers also moved in after a surge in the index over the past year that has seen it pile on about 140 percent. Sydney fell 1.26 percent, or 70.5 points, to close at 5,524.9 but Seoul ended 0.34 percent higher, adding 7.02 points to 2,041.88. After a two-day meeting the Fed on Wednesday held off hiking rates but altered its outlook for future rises, expecting a lower upward curve than previously forecast. While policymakers kept unchanged their outlook for a 0.625 percent rate for the end of this year, the end-2016 rate was 1.625 percent, down 20 basis points from the March estimate, and 2.875 percent by the end of 2017, which was 25 basis points lower. In a news conference afterwards, the bank’s head Janet Yellen said its first interest rate hike in nine years would likely come “later this year”. However, she added: “My colleagues and I would like to see more decisive evidence that a moderate pace of economic growth will be sustained, so the conditions in the labour market will continue to improve and inflation will move back to two percent.” The prospect of lower borrowing costs boosted US shares. The Dow rose 0.17 percent, the S&P 500 gained 0.19 percent and the Nasdaq put on 0.18 percent. “Yellen was dovish in the press conference,” said David Buckle, London-based head of quantitative research at Fidelity Worldwide Investment, told Bloomberg News. “She was at pains to point out that monetary policy will likely remain highly accommodative for a long time after the first rate rise.” (afp)

Rejang Legong: a dance presentation of angels to Gods
AMLAPURA - It has become a tradition for Jasri customary villagers of Karangasem to present various dances like the Rejang, Abuang and Legong in Bale Agung temple. These sacred dances are part of a ritual series known as Meprani in conjunction with the celebration of Galungan and Kuningan feast day. All villagers present pekenak to Ulun Busali deity as venerated gods in Bale Agung temple. According to Chief of Jasri customary village, I Nyoman Sutirtayasa, the Rejang, Abuang and Legong dance symbolized the sacrifice and an expression of gratitude for the abundance of worldly endowment to deities who would return to Java Island. “These dances are meant to entertain and please the deities because it is believed when returning to Java they will bestow graces of prosperity. On that account, it will give the source of life for Balinese
people,” he said. Local people believed, explained Sutirtayasa, the series of dharma victory day (Galungan-Kuningan) was initiated since the deities came down from Java to Bali namely on Sugian Jawa and they were ready to receive devotee’s worship. Furthermore, they were presented with oblation on Galungan and Kuningan. Three days after Kuningan, the deities were presented with aci prani accompanied with the performance of Rejang, Abuang and Legong dance. The dances were performed by daa (virgin girls) from 33 customary hamlets existing in the area. They danced hand in hand clockwise on the courtyard of Bale Agung temple accompanied with gamelan music. They danced with graceful movement in attires with typical teterek accessories on the back and headdress embellished with young
banana leaf ornament. More interestingly, the Rejang dance with distinctive movement was never taught or learned by the daa. However, when it was time to perform the dance they would be able to do it. At the end of the Meprani ritual it was marked with the disposal of used ritual paraphernalia of Kuningan celebration to the sea. A senior figure of local customary village, I Nyoman Putra Adnyana, said that presentation of such sacred dances like the Rejang, Abuang and Legong was originated from the stage of Rejang dance in Puseh temple. However, it was then also presented to deity abiding in the Bale Agung temple. “Theologically, the ishta devata (venerated gods) abiding in Bale Agung is the Tri Murti symbolizing the omnipotence of God in his manifestation as the Generator, Operator and Destroyer,” he said. Gunaksa Pier to be provisionally operated in 2016
SEMARAPURA - Gunaksa Pier is ascertained to be in operation in early 2016 to serve crossing services from mainland Klungkung to Nusa Penida. However, the operation is just limited to provide a berth for the Nusa Jaya Abadi roro vessel. In the meantime, the other facilities will utilize the emergency building and dock entry through the winding path of the former quarry location. Although it can be operated, the Gunaksa Pier is still threatened by flash flood from the streams of the Unda River. The Head of the Klungkung Transportation, Informatics and Communications Agency, Nengah Sukasta, revealed that after the release of the Attorney Legal Opinion on April 20, 2015, the workmanship of Gunaksa Pier is begun with the dredging of the main pier and the installation of
mobile bridge. As estimated, the project is worked on directly by central government and will be accomplished at the end of 2015 so that it can begin the operation in early 2016. “Workmanship is underway for the dredging and mobile bridge for roro vessel to berth,” he said when attending
a working meeting of Commission II of the Klungkung House, Wednesday (Jun. 17). Although it has operated, supporting facilities such as road access to the pier and office building cannot have been done considering the Gunaksa Pier is still threatened by flash
floods in case of the Unda River stream overflows. “Pier area is prone to get eroded as have not been reinforced. Prior to the reinforcement, workmanship of the building in the area cannot be worked on. Possibly it will build an emergency building only,” he explained. For the moment, the road access to the pier remains to use the existing road through the former quarry area. Later on, the access will apply backfilling and bridge system. The budget worth IDR 40 billion for the road access to
the pier from central government may not be entirely absorbed considering the time available for processing is limited. It will need four bridges to open up the access to Gunaksa Pier with an overall length reaches 515 meters of the total length of 1.755 km of road. “For those wishing to go to Gunaksa Pier can take the emergency entrance from the east end of the bridge on Jalan Bypass Ida Bagus Mantra, because the main road is still in the planning process,” said Sukasta. BANGLI - In addition to tangerine farming, oyster mushroom cultivation lately began to proliferate in Bangli County. Unfortunately, the very high demand for the mushroom cannot be met by local farmers because of limited production as experienced by Luh Martina, a mushroom farmer from Bunutin village, Bangli. “The demand for mushrooms is very high, reaching 20 kg every day, but I can only produce five kg only. As a result, I am overwhelmed. The price is IDR 20,000 per kg,” she said. The women having been two years in the business revealed that in addition to mushroom being ready to be processed, she is also flooded with the increasingly soaring demand for mushroom seeds. With the price set at IDR 3,200 per spawn bag, every day she is able to sell 100 to 200 bags. “The demand for mushroom spawn is also high. Fortunately, I am able to fulfill it,” she said. Oyster mushroom demand is not only coming from Bangli region, but also from other regions such as Klungkung and Gianyar. Similarly, the seed marketing has penetrated the region of Karangasem. “Many buyers of mushroom and its seeds are from outside the region. So, it is not only from Bangli,” she said. Aside from Martina, another mushroom grower also being flooded with the orders is I Putu Karmawan from Peninjoan village, Tembuku subdistrict. He expressed that the demand for oyster mushroom every day reaches 50 to 60 kg, while his production is only about 30 to 40 kg. “The demand for oyster mushroom is very high. Unfortunately, I cannot meet the entire demand,” he said. Related to the demand for seeds, he also experienced similar condition as that of Martina. Every month, the demand reaches 20,000 spawn bags, but he is only able to produce 9,000 bags to 12,000 bags. “Similarly, I cannot meet the demand for seeds, where the demand is very high. Malaysian navy in contact with pirates on hijacked tanker
KUALA LUMPUR - A Malaysian naval vessel has made contact with the pirates onboard hijacked tanker Orkim Harmony and is trying to persuade them to surrender, a maritime official said on Thursday. The tanker as of noon (0400 GMT) was in Vietnamese waters headed south with the Malaysian navy vessel KD Terengganu and a maritime ship in pursuit. Both the crew and the cargo onboard the tanker are safe, and the navy is negotiating with the robbers through the captain of the Orkim Harmony, said Vice Admiral Ahmad Puzi, deputy director general of the operations unit of the Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), in a press briefing. “From our experience, as long as there’s no situation that alarms the criminals, the crew will be safe,” Ahmad Puzi said. “We are using a soft approach first, trying to advise them to surrender,” he said, adding that the mood of the negotiations is “good”. The 7,300 deadweight tonne (DWT) Orkim Harmony was hijacked on June 11 about 30 nautical miles from the Johor port of Tanjung Sedili carrying around 50,000 barrels of RON95 gasoline, in the second such incident in the same area this month. The Orkim Harmony is operated by Malaysia’s Orkim Ship Management. On board is a crew of 22, including 16 Malaysians, five Indonesians and one Myanmar national.
After the tanker was hijacked, the pirates repainted the ship and changed the name to Kim Harmon. Malaysia’s Chief of Navy Admiral Abdul Aziz Jaafar said on his Twitter account that at least eight perpetrators were on board the Orkim Harmony armed with pistols and machetes. Malaysian state oil firm Petronas told Reuters that the Orkim Harmony was carrying 6,000 metric tonnes of product from its Malacca refinery to the port of Kuantan on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia for distribution. It said “all necessary measures are being taken to ensure undisrupted fuel supply to consumers in the East Coast region.” Earlier this month, a 7,100 DWT oil tanker, Orkim Victory, carrying diesel loaded from Petronas was hijacked on June 4 in the same area and on the same route. The Orkim Victory was later released by the hijackers after about 770 metric tonnes (6,000 barrels) of its cargo had been siphoned off. It will, however, be difficult for the pirates to siphon off the gasoline from the Harmony as it is highly flammable and they are likely looking for proper facilities to do a ship-to-ship transfer, Ahmad Puzi had told reporters on Monday. Pointing to crises in Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Burundi and elsewhere, U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres said he doesn’t expect any improvement in 2015. “There is a multiplication of new crises,” he said. “The IraqSyria crisis gained the dimension of a mega one ... and at the same time the old crises have no solutions.” The report comes at a time when Europe is grappling with how to deal with a flood of new migrants crossing the Mediterranean to escape fighting in Syria, Libya and elsewhere. UNHCR estimated that a total of 59.5 million people worldwide had been displaced by conflict by the end of last year — including 38.2 million displaced within their own countries. That was up from 51.2 million in 2013 — the previous highest since the U.N. began collecting numbers in the early 1950s. Syria alone accounted for 11.6 million of those people, the biggest single figure. The agency counted nearly 3.9
million Syrian refugees in 107 countries last year, the fourth year of the country’s civil war. That made it the leading source of refugees — pushing Afghanistan, which had held that status for more than 30 years, down to second place with 2.6 million refugees. Syria’s northern neighbor, Turkey, became the world’s biggest refugee host with 1.59 million refugees. Pakistan, which had held that position for more than a decade, was second with 1.51 million. Over the course of last year, only 126,800 refugees returned to their home countries — the lowest number since 1983. The countries to which most people returned were Congo, Mali and Afghanistan. For many of those who have fled, home still beckons. Maher Al Khedrawi, one of the many Syrians who have left for Turkey, said in a recent interview with The Associated Press that he looked forward to returning to his country, a sentiment he said was shared by millions of others. An expert witness is a witness, who by virtue of education, training, skill, or experience, is believed to have the expertise and specialized knowledge in a particular subject beyond that of the average person, sufficient that others may officially and legally rely on the witness’ specialized opinion about an evidence or fact issue within the scope of his expertise, referred to as the expert
opinion as an assistance to the fact-finder. “If we conduct this investigation scientifically and without a testimony from the expert, the argument may be denied in the court,” he explained. Nitibaskara, who is also a professor of Anthropology, will analyze the testimony of the suspects. Based on UI’s official website, Nitibaskara was born on July 3, 1943, and graduated in Criminology from the Faculty of Social and Political Science of UI in 1970. Besides arresting Agus and Megawe, the police have also arrested Ivone, one of Megawe’s children. Megawe and Ivone were arrested at a villa in Canggu in the district of Badung early on Sunday morning and were immediately sent to a detention cell at 4:35 a.m. local time. According to Sompie, the police named Megawe as a suspect based on the results of the developments in Engeline’s case following the confession by Agus, the suspect behind the child’s murder during his questioning as a witness in the case of child negligence. LONDON - Men dressed in lace by Burberry, Christopher Kane’s colourful tweeds, and 1980s-style footwear by Jimmy Choo: London’s men’s fashion week bowed out Monday with plenty of daring designs. Lace was not just for women at Burberry, where the material leant a romantic feel to white shirts and finished straight-cut, mid-length coats. But Christopher Bailey, the luxury British brand’s chief creative and chief executive officer, admitted the style is not for everyone. Certain men would wear lace, others not, Bailey said, adding that in a fashion show there was something for all tastes, and he personally liked the poetic feel that it brought. Burberry showed off its spring/ summer 2016 collection k at Perk’s Field, next to Kensington Palace, the official residence of Prince William and his wife Kate, giving the occasion a garden party feel. Among those on the guest list were actor Samuel L. Jackson and Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton. Using black, pale grey and even mustard tones, Bailey has reinterpreted the label’s signature style. The Chesterfield coats boasted a relaxed and elegant feel, and bore a lace collar. As for their famous trench coats, they are made from silk and light wool and adorned with motifs. There were also ideas drawn from the streets, with jogging pants in cashmere, and bomber jackets with quilted panels. The luxury shoemaker presented its new collection at the Seymour Leisure Centre in London, in a sports hall converted into a skateboard park for the occasion. AMLAPURA - Two elementary school students in Karangasem are suspected of having been infected by HIV/AIDS. Both of the students who are form Selat and Rendang respectively, are being raised by their grandparents because, sadly their parents have died. A source in Selat said that the condition of one the students is alarming having had both legs amputated after a traffic accident. “While being treated, his blood did not stop flowing. Finally his legs had to be amputated and now he must use prosthetic legs,” said this source. Meanwhile, if the elementary school student from Rendang, does not receive immediate medical treatment, he will face the same fate as his deceased parents. Chief of the Karangasem Health Agency, Gusti Made Tirtayana, when contacted on Wednesday (Jun. 17) said that his agency had not received any data from the Bali Health Agency regarding new cases of HIV/AIDS in Karangasem . The data from the provincial government for Karangasem includes numbers for 2010 to December 2014, and indicates a total of 410 cases. Karangasem is ranked
seventh in Bali in terms of the number of HIV/AIDS. Of the 410 cases in Karangasem, 360 cases or 89.5 percent are caused by heterosexual transmission. In other words the virus was sexually transmitted between men and women. Should there be any new case, the Health Agency particularly through the health center, has prepared a HIV/AIDS counselor. Each health center has two counselors specially trained by the Health Agency for handling HIV/AIDS. They consist of a midwife and nurse. These counselors are also available in clinicc such as the Tulus Ayu Clinic in Amlapura and Tukad Luah Clinic at Tianyar. These counselors have also been trained by the health institution. “In other words, if there are new patients suspected of suffering HIV/AIDS, the symptoms
will have been detected by the health centres or clinics,” he said. Once identified, the health officers will follow-up by filling a report. Monthly reports from hospital are sent to the Bali Health Agency, to the Division of Communicable Diseases. While reports made by public health centers are sent to the Bali Health Office, to the Community Disease Eradication (P2M). “If there are any new reports from any of out twelve health centers, or two clinics, they will be immediately sent to the P2M,” he explained. However, before someone is declared to be suffering HIV/AIDS, it must be confirmed by the Bali Health Agency. The final confirmations from the Bali Health Agency have only been sent to Karangasem for cases reported up until December 2014. (kmb31)
BANGLI - A pig farm located behind SMKN 1 Bangli vocational school, on Gang Rajawali, Jalan Ngurah Rai in Kawan village, was protested against by local residents. The pig farm is accused of polluting the environment and interfering with the comfort and well being of local residents. Residnets have requestd that the Bangli Environment Agency (BLH) closed down the pig business. On Wednesday (Jun. 17), local resident, I Nyoman Artha, revealed that the pig farm located in a residential area, emits a terrible stench and that a number of nearby residents are experiencing symptoms such as; dizziness, nausea, coughing and shortness of breath. The stench generated by the pig farm reached as far as 200 meters. So not only have residents complained, but students from SMN I Bangli, have also joined in the protest given that their school is located just east of the pigsty. “People here are very disturbed by this pig farming. The stench generated makes people, especially small children, experience shortness of breath,” he said. Artha added, apart from polluting the air, pig manure is contaminating the water that flows in the irrigation canal of Subak Aya. Not only that, during time break, the pigs are often noisy and disturb the students. Following numerous complaints about the pig farm, Artha and others appealed to the business owner, I Nengah Sucita to do something about these problems. However these appeals have been ignored. “Appeals have been made frequently and he promised to respond but there has never been any follow up,” said Artha. The irresponsive attitude of the pig farm owner is considered to be selfish and has caused local residents to take a stand by sending a letter to the Bangli Environment Agency. The letter No.01/RJW/KW/2015 signed by a number of residents stated the objection of residents to the pigsty and asked the agency to put a stop the pig farming activities. “We have sent a letter to the Environment Agency to follow up on our verbal complaints. We want the pig farm shut down,” he said. Meanwhile, the Head of the BLH Bangli, I Made Alit Parwata, confirmed that they had received the report from the residents and added that he had already conducted a site inspection along with the Bangli Municipal Police. Though there is a request to shut down the pig farm, Parwata said that they cannot act immediately. As a first step, the pigsty owner will be summoned on Thursday and given a warning and guidance. During monitoring, the pig farm did indeed exuded a very pungent odor. Parwata was also dismayed to find that the pig business that was established six years ago and which is raising 22 heads of pig placed in six pigsties has not been equipped with a waste water treatment plant (WWTP). “We have just received the report. Tomorrow (Thursday) we will summon the pig farm owner to ask for an explanation. We will provide him with coaching or guidance before proceeding to the next step,” he said. To reduce the complaints from residents (about the stench), the business owner needs to install a WWTP and must reduce the number of pigs, in order to diminish the odor generated. Besides, the business owner must also manage the farm properly. Otherwise, the BLH will not hesitate to close it. “The owner must be able to manage the farm well and equip it with a WWTP. Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

LOS ANGELES - Academy award-winning duo Charlize Theron and Sean Penn have broken off their engagement and parted ways after a two-year relationship, US media reported Wednesday. The couple was last seen together in May in Cannes, where Theron -- who only recently referred to Penn as the love of her life -- was promoting the premiere of her film “Mad Max.” Theron, 39, decided to cut it off with Penn, 54, whom she started dating in 2013 after the two had known each other as friends for years, Us Weekly reported. MANGUPURA - One of President Joko Widodo (Jokowi)’s development plans is to make Indonesia the central axis of the world’s maritime industry and maritime tourism over the next five years. According to the Director of the Tourist Destination Study Program, for the Bali Tourism Institute (STP) Nusa Dua Bali, Luh Yusni Wiarti, Indonesia in general and Bali in particular, have lot of potential in terms of the development of marine tourism. This area of development needs to be continuously explored in order to optimize this potential and should obviously pay great attention to ecological sustainability and preservation. “The exceptional potential for the development of marine tourism in Bali has yet to be fully explored -whether underwater, on the sea or on the coast. However, this development must be sure to pay attention to ecological balance”, said Wiarti on the sidelines of a seminar regarding the publication of the research results of the Destination Field Research (DFR) entitled “The Existence and Role
of Marine Tourism for Local Communities in the Province of Bali,” which took place in the Widyatula Building of the STP Nusa Dua on Wednesday (June 17). She added that South Bali (Badung), North Bali (Buleleng) and East Bali (Karangasem) have already become a triangle of marine tourism on the island offering with each area offering its own appeal, excellence and unique aspects. For
example, Badung mostly features tourist activities that take place on the water and which are supported by the beauty of some beaches such as Kuta Beach, Pandawa Beach, and Tanjung Benoa. Karangasem offers beautiful beaches and coral reefs, while Buleleng, especially in the area of Menjangan Island, offers an exceptionally beautiful area for underwater tourism including the Pemuteran coral reef.
“Bali’s position as a marine tourist destination is already held in high esteem on the world stage as evidenced by the recognition that Bali has received by being named ‘Best Sea Destination’ several times. Furthermore, underwater, on the water and coastal tourism already exist in all of Bali’s existing marine tourism areas,” said Luh Yusni. However, she added that what needs to be further explored is the potential to develop marine tourism further and also to look at what role local communities can play in this development, whether local people have so far enjoyed any of the benefits for example. Considering the fact that marine
tourism has developed rapidly in Bali, we would expect that local communities would have benefited economically, socially, culturally and environmentally. This is the only way that marine tourism in Bali this will be able to survive. No less important is how to preserve the environment of the areas used for marine tourism. For instance, coral reefs, as well as beaches, must be maintained and preserved as they are both vulnerable to the effects of tourism. “Marine tourism must be more ecofriendly, a clear agenda regarding environmental protection must be the top priority, given that the basis for this tourism is the environment,” she said.
