Female stars dominate Cannes festival jury

PARIS - Hollywood actresses Cate Blanchett, Kristen Stewart and Lea Seydoux will head a starry female-dominated jury at the Cannes film festival next month, the organisers said Wednesday.

American writer-director Ava DuVernay of “Selma” fame and Burundian singer and composer Khadja Nin complete the five women on the nine-person jury that will decide the top Palme d’Or prize. In a year when the #MeToo movement has dominated the headlines, and with only three female directors among the 18 in competition, the organisers clearly felt the need to make a stronger gesture towards women. They had already announced earlier this year that the Australian-born actress Blanchett would head the jury. At least four of the assaults on actresses of which the disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein is accused are alleged to have taken place at Cannes. Italian actress Asia Argento said that the producer raped her in his hotel there when she was 21.

Korea peace talks on agenda as reports say CIA chief met North’s Kim

President Donald Trump gave his blessing to talks aimed at formally ending the Korean War in a series of diplomatic revelations Tuesday, as reports said CIA director Mike Pompeo had met Kim Jong Un on a secret visit to Pyongyang. Raising expectations for a major breakthrough at a series of upcoming summits, Trump said “a great chance to solve a world problem” was within reach on the Korean peninsula. The 1950-53 Korean War ended in an armistice rather than a peace treaty, leaving the two sides technically still in a state of conflict, and the Demilitarized Zone between them bristles with minefields and fortifications. Seoul officials say they are looking at ways to secure a new agreement, with the leader of nuclear-armed North Korea Kim Jong Un and the South’s President Moon Jae-in due to hold a summit next week. “We are looking at changing the current armistice regime to a peace regime,” an official of the presidential Blue House said Wednesday. have taken.” US officials say that no decision has yet been made on a meeting venue, but China, North Korea, South Korea, and Panmunjom in the Demilitarized Zone between the two Koreas are seen as possible locations. The 1953 armistice was signed in Panmunjom and it will also see the April 27 summit between Kim and Moon, with officials from the two Koreas meeting there Wednesday in preparation. The US-led United Nations command, China and North Korea are signatories to the half-century-old armistice, while South Korea is not. “We are hoping for some kind of an agreement between the South and North,” the Blue House official said. “But it can’t be settled just with an inter-Korean agreement. POLICIES of Ministry of Environment and Forestry granting a right to manage village forest (HPHD) is followed up by village officials and administrators of the village-owned enterprise (BUMDes) of Selat village, Sukasada, Buleleng. In recent months, about 10 hectares of protected forest land at this village has been arranged.

Such forest area is developed into tourist destination which is not much different from the object of Bedugul Botanical Garden in Tabanan. Although being similar, the development of tourism potential like this is believed to be able to attract tourist to luxuriate in the expanse of forest at Selat village whose sustainability is well maintained. Position of the Selat village forest itself lies in the southern end of the village center. From direction of Bedugul, tourists can reach the village forest area through the road at Wanagiri village to the west to Gobleg village, Banjar, and then through the district road to the Selat village. Within less than an hour from Bedugul, tourists can find the landscape of protected forest organized without eliminating the condition of the original plants. Other than for unwinding while enjoying fresh air, visitors can also walk around the forest across the track having been made to see the scenery of waterfall in the middle of the forest. Having satisfied to explore the protected forest, visitors can continue their tour to Lovina tourist area or visit the historical tour in the heart of Singaraja town. An officer of BUMDes Pandan Harum of Selat, Made Mudita, recently said the forest arrangement is done to create a park, open two entrances and cre-

ate trekking track along five kilometers in the forest area. In this arrangement, the tree structure is left intact and only added by planting ornamental plants in appropriate with the forest area. Meanwhile, for additional buildings, they only make a gazebo with knock-down model. “According to the existing permits and agreements, this arrangement is done while maintaining the original structure of the forest. There is no cutting of trees and the types of plants planted are also adapted to endemic plants in this forest,” he explained. Mudita said the concept of tourism development at his village is applying the concept as in the attraction of Bedugul Botanical Garden. For the supporting facilities, this tourist area will have a restaurant in the tree. The addition of this supporting facility is ascertained not to cut down trees, so it does not violate the agreement and remains to apply the concept of natural tourism development in protected forest areas. As for the parking area, his management plans to utilize the road around the location. “As the addition of supporting facilities, we will gradually complete it by making a restaurant in the tree without cutting down trees. Meanwhile, the parking lot will take advantage the road body considering the terrain is uphill,” he explained. Previously, Selat village was one of the seven villages in Buleleng licensed to manage the protected forest in its territory. Forest utilization program of central government under the label of village forest management rights (HPHD) was rolled out several years ago. Villages are licensed by HPHD to get forest management rights with a number of conditions and have a common commitment to preserve and conserve forest areas. (mud)

PRICKLY pandanus grows flourishingly at Pesinggahan village, Dawan, Klungkung. For many years until now, it remains to become a ‘breath’ for a number of residents. It is transformed into mat handicraft that is quite salable in the market. Ahead of Galungan feast day, the demand is quite a lot. To meet this demand, the craftsmen begin to weave from the morning. Pesinggahan is the easternmost village in Klungkung district and bordered with Karangasem district. When explored, this village has a lot of potential. Aside from fisheries sector, it also has potential in agriculture and culinary business frequently found on roadside that offers various dishes tempting the appetite. Besides, it has prickly pandanus widely growing in the area as seen on the roadside. At first glance, it only looks like wild plant taken advantage as court yard’s barriers. Apparently, the plant suitably growing on the edge of the beach is very meaningful. It has supported the livelihood to a number of residents for many years. With palm leaf-like texture makes it very good for weaving craft, where one of them is mat. This is cultivated by Nyoman Sumiati, 40. New drug uses antibodies to stop chronic migraines, without side effects

A new study shows that drinking more than five alcoholic drinks a week raises the risk of stroke, heart disease and aneurysms.

More than 5 drinks a week could shorten lives by years, study finds

PEOPLE who follow government guidelines to have a drink or so a day could be drinking themselves into an early grave, researchers said Thursday.

Any more than five drinks a week on average can take years off a person’s life, the new study of more than half a million people around the world shows. That’s less than what’s recommended in many countries. For instance, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Heart Association both say men can safely drink up to two alcoholic drinks a day and women up to a drink a day. A drink is defined as 12 ounces of beer, four ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof spirits. An international team of researchers looked at data from 600,000 people in 19 countries, who were asked about drinking habits dating back as long ago as 1964. They were followed for years afterward. People who reported drinking more had higher rates

of stroke, heart disease, deadly high blood pressure and fatal aortic aneurysms, the team reported in the Lancet medical journal. “The paper estimates a 40-year-old drinking four units a day above the guidelines has roughly two years lower life expectancy,” said David Spiegelhalter, a risk expert at Britain’s University of Cambridge who was not involved in the study. “This works out at about an hour per day. So it’s as if each unit above guidelines is taking, on average, about 15 minutes of life, about the same as a cigarette. Of course it’s up to individuals whether they think this is worthwhile.” The most people can get away with and not raise their risk of early death was about five glasses of wine a week or the equivalent, the researchers found. Many people can drink far more than that in a single day. The CDC says more than 38 million American adults admit to binge-drinking once a week and guzzle an average of eight drinks per spree. (net)

PEOPLE who have tried unsuccessfully to prevent migraine with other treatments may find relief with a new drug, according to a preliminary study released Tuesday. Erenumab is part of new class of drugs —fully human monoclonal antibodies — that block calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), a molecule that transmits migraine pain signals during an attack. The medication is a long-lasting injection that is meant to stop a migraine before it even starts. “If we can block CGRP, then we can abort a migraine attack,” said Dr. David Kudrow, director of the California medical clinic for headache, who was not involved in the study. More than thirty-seven million Americans suffer from migraine attacks, according to the American Headache Society. Of these, about 4 million have chronic migraine and suffer headaches for 10 to 14 days a month. While some people are helped by low cost, over-the-counter drugs such as ibuprofen, others

need stronger prescription medications, such as sumatriptan and ergotamine, which constrict the blood vessels in the brain and can cause dizziness or nausea. Botox injections are also used to help ease migraines in some people. But a large percentage of sufferers are not helped by anything. ““This is the first-ever mechanism specific migraine drug designed for prevention,” said lead study author Dr. Peter Goadsby, professor of neurology at Kings College London, UK and University of California, San Francisco. “This will change migraine treatment for those who don’t respond to conventional treatments.” To participate in the study — the results were released ahead of the annual meeting of the American Academy of Neurology — adults ages 18 or over, had to report between four and 14 disabling episodic migraines, or 15 or more chronic migraines per month, and to have failed two or more preventative treatments, such as topiramate, propranolol, or amitriptyline. BANGLI - Jehem village in Tembuku subdistrict has been the center of carved shrine handicraft in Bangli. Approximately 75 percent of the residents at Jehem village have profession as craftsmen. The marketing of carved shrine products made by craftsmen at Jehem village is not limited only in Bali but also outside Bali, especially transmigration areas. Headman of Jehem, Ida Bagus Made Rencana, when met at his village on Tuesday (Apr. 17) revealed that carved shrine craft at Jehem village has existed since a long time ago. The handicrafts cultivated by most of his residents keeps growing. The skills of his residents in the carved shrine arts are the result

of inheritance from generation to generation. “Carved shrine craft has become the economic support to local residents. It continues to be passed down from generation to generation. At our village, there is almost no unemployment because since elementary school local children have been taught to carve,” he said.

Rencana explained that marketing of the carved shrine products made by Jehem villagers is pretty good. The demand for handicraft has never stopped. Marketing is not limited in Bali region but also to outside Bali. Outside Bali, the carved shrine made by craftsmen of Jehem village is much in demand by Balinese people in transmigration areas such as Lampung, Sulawesi and others. “It is in demand due to the quality and carving products considered typical and to be giving divine vibration,” he explained. Raw materials used to make

carved shrine are wood. Two types of wood commonly used as materials in the shrine making are jackfruit wood and champak wood. Quality difference between jackfruit wood and champak wood has an effect on the price of the shrine craft products sold by the artisans. “For instance, a unit of three-chambered shrine made from jackfruit wood is usually sold for IDR 9 million, while if using champak wood the price can be around IDR 15 million per unit. It costs more expensive because the champak wood is better, stronger

and anti-fungal,” he explained. He admitted the increasing number of shrine craftsmen at Jehem village has an impact on the availability of raw materials. Currently, the wood supply obtained by crafters is somewhat not smooth. To support the existence and development of carved shrine craft at Jehem village, Rencana said that village authority so far has taken part by introducing the products made by the artisans. PHILADELPHIA - Catastrophic engine failure on a Southwest Airlines flight from New York to Dallas killed a mother-of-two and forced an emergency landing Tuesday, the first fatal incident in US commercial aviation for nearly a decade. An experimental tower over 100 metres (328 feet) high in northern China – dubbed the world’s biggest air purifier by its operators – has brought a noticeable improvement in air quality, according to the scientist leading the project, as authorities seek ways to tackle the nation’s chronic smog problem. The tower has been built in Xian in Shaanxi province and is undergoing testing by researchers at the Institute of Earth Environment at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The head of the research, Cao Junji, said improvements in air quality had been observed over an area of 10 square kilometres (3.86 square miles) in the city over the past few months and the tower has managed to produce more than 10 million cubic metres (353 million cubic feet) of clean air a day since its launch. Cao added that on severely polluted days the tower was

able to reduce smog close to moderate levels. The system works through greenhouses covering about half the size of a soccer field around the base of the tower. Polluted air is sucked into the glasshouses and heated up by solar energy. The hot air then rises through the tower and passes through multiple layers of cleaning filters. “The tower has no peer in terms of size … the results are quite encouraging,” said Cao. Xian can experience heavy pollution in winter, with much of the city’s heating relying on coal. The tower’s operators say, however, that the system still works in the cold months as coatings on the greenhouses enable the glass to absorb solar radiation at a much higher efficiency. Cao’s team set up more than a dozen pollution monitoring stations in the area to test the tower’s impact. The average reduction in PM2.5 – the fine particles in smog deemed most harmful to health – fell 15 per cent during heavy pollution. (net)

Arcades seek to take virtual reality gaming mainstream

The buzz around virtual reality (VR) gaming has seen Taiwan-based HTC, Sony and Facebook-owned Oculus VR battling to woo consumers with a range of headgear. But it has been slow to really take off, partly due to the hefty price of top-end headsets, beginning at around $350, and the challenges in setting up complex VR systems at home. But VR arcades, which have been springing up around the world, particularly in Asia, are now giving people the chance to try it out more easily and for a fraction of the price. “Given the complications of at-home, PC-based VR systems, pay-per-use, location-based entertainment venues can fill the gap,” said Bryan Ma, from International Data Corporation (IDC), a consumer technology market research firm, in a recent note on the industry. Several VR gaming companies have made forays into Singapore, seeing the ultramodern, affluent city-state that is home to hordes of expatriates as a good fit. The zombie fight-out was taking place at a centre where participants stalked a room with a black floor and walls. “I did paintball before, it’s quite fun... but I think the whole scene is much more interesting here,” said Jack Backx, a 55-year-old from the Netherlands, who was playing with colleagues from the oil and gas industry on a work day out.

For the best-quality experience, it can be relatively expensive -- a session in Singapore costs Sg$59 ($45). “The equipment here is not cheap,” said Simon Ogilvie, executive director of Tomorrow Entertainment, which runs the Zero Latency franchise in Singapore. While design aficionados flock to Milan from around the globe for the world’s largest furniture fair, Italy’s kings of kitchen style are looking beyond its borders to beat a sluggish domestic market. As the six-day “Salone del Mobile” got under way in Italy’s fashion capital on Tuesday, the country’s kitchen design industry was celebrating a 3.2 percent growth in exports last year. The event hosts more than 2,450 exhibitors, of whom nearly a quarter are foreign. Last year, it attracted around 300,000 visitors from 165 countries. The 779 million euros ($961 billion) generated by the kitchen sector is behind

only Germany and China. Consultancy firm Bain & Company estimates that the global design market grew four percent in 2017 to 35 billion euros, a figure that is destined to triple over the next 10 years. Milan’s Centre for Industrial Studies (CSIL) says global kitchen exports are expected to reach $6.7 billion in 2021, an increase of about 20 percent from 2016. And with the country slowly emerging from the global financial crisis, companies are capitalising on Italy’s reputation for style abroad to give themselves a place at the table. “We realised (during the crisis)

Followed by public discussion with photographers Candra Metu (moon rise) is the name of a dance created by Master Balinese dancer I Nyoman Kaler in the 1920’s. The late Kaler was an extremely gifted and enthusiastic dancer who created a number of unique and beautiful dances based on the poetic gestural language of classical Balinese dance. One of his creations is the Candra Metu dance that he taught to his dedicated and talented student Ibu Arini , who continues to dance this delightful piece to this day. If fact she performed part of this enchanting dance on Friday (Apr,13) for a group of young photographers, before the floor was opened to a public discussion about the past and future of Balinese dance. Dance plays a very important role in Balinese cultural traditions as well as the broader social landscape. Both sacred dances reserved for religious ceremonies as well as non-sacred dances have been passed down through the generations from master to student in an –often, unbroken lineage. But as Bu Arini explained, this is not to say that these dances remain unchanged over time, but rather that the particular style of a given lineage remains discernable. Over the last century a number of factors have brought changes not only to Balinese dances but to the manner in which their taught, as well as the customs that dictate by whom, when and where they are danced. Bu Arini who still practices and teaches dance everyday from her sangar (small traditional dance school) has witnessed these changes first hand and is a living encyclopedia of experience about many dances and dance related knowledge. Renowned for her dance skills and ability to choreograph, she has also been known to play the gamelan like nobody’s business and is passionate about transmitting her extraordinary wealth of experience, knowledge and skills to the next generation. The Candra Metu dance is especially dear to her as it was created at a very

special time in Balinese dance history when her own passionate and very skilled teacher I Nyoman Kaler and others were actively engaged in creating new dances based on classical themes. It was a time of tremendous creativity amongst dancers from different lineages and though much of this creativity lives on, much has also been lost to changing times. Bu Arini is the only person alive today who still knows how to dance the Candra Metu (though she has recently started to teach it to a willing student). As this dance requires two female dancers, it is on the endangered list. Lingakra Photography Community has taken interest in documenting Bu Arini dancing the Candra Metu –both for documentary purposes but also to shed light on the fact that changes in the way that dances are transmitted and shared is leaving a wealth of cultural knowledge to disappear to time. On Friday, Bu Arini danced part of the Candra Metu, accompanied by a live gamelan troupe in the gallery space of Lingkara Photography Community as part of their ongoing collaboration to create a book about the Candra Metu dance. The photo-shoot was open to the public and was followed by a discussion with Bu Arini led by researcher, writer, performer and director Cok Sawitri who explained in great detail about many of the changes that have affected Balinese dance over the decades, elaborating on Bu Arini’s descriptions of her fascinating and historic life experience, with data from her research on this subject. The discussion expanded beyond the confines of the Candra Metu dance proper into the broader landscape of the rich and varied dance heritage that has been handed down to Bu Arini and preserved by her in her practice

for more than half a century. When asked if any of these older dances had been documented before, bu Arini answered: “yes, I remembered once a camera crew came to record one performance of a special dance – but they only focused on the young pretty dancers”, she said chuckling. She added more soberly however that it really is a shame that the subtleties expressed by older master dancers are not being recorded, as they hold within them a wealth of value that cannot be taught in a short time nor transmitted in words yet convey something essential about

t h e depth, beauty and uniqueness of Balinese culture. “I feel very sad sometimes when I think of how many great dancers have passed away from age in the last decade without their talent having been at least captured on film for the next generation to learn from. I feel deeply touched that these young photographers are taking interest in creating a book so that some of this beauty can live on”, she said after giving a brief yet strikingly graceful demonstration of one of the dance techniques taught to her one of Bali’s greatest dancers, the late I Nyoman Kaler. The gambuh is a very complex ancient art, having the elements of motion art (dance), vocal and gamelan music. dance is intended to enrich the theatrical studies they have,” he added. These students studied for ten days and practiced for 2.5 hours a day. They know the Kakul Mas Dance Studio from his father, the late I Ketut Kantor. One of their lecturers had learned mask dance directly from the late I Ketut Kantor. Their lecturer then sent the students to get the fundamentals of Balinese classical dance from the successor of the late I Ketut Kantor. These students did not only learn to dance, but also tried to express themselves by learning to dance, make a mask and know more about Balinese life. In prac-

ticing the dance, they are trained directly by Ketut Wirtawan, Wayan Artawa, Nyoman Juniati, Tut Nik and Wayan Darmawan. The class of making a mask is provided by Ketut Wirtawan. “Although the schedule is held by their campus, there are also students attending the program repeatedly on their personal account,” he said. Kakul Mas Dance Studio which is also the home of I Ketut Wirtawan’s family is natural remaining to refer to the kosala-kosali (Balinese geomancy) rules, commonly used in the making of Balinese house. That’s why many foreign tourists often visit the house as

a kind of tourist attraction. They come from various countries escorted by a tour guide. “There are always tourists making a visit here. They like to see traditional house as well as painting of Batuan style,” said Wirtawan. Ketut Wirtawan is often taken advantage as an object when painting on canvas. WASHINGTON - Former US first lady Barbara Bush died Tuesday at the age of 92, triggering an outpouring of praise for the matriarch of a Republican family once at the apex of American politics. Barbara and George H.W. Bush were married for 73 years, and the widower “of course is heart-broken to lose his beloved Barbara,” his chief of staff Jean Becker said in a statement. “He held her hand all day today and was at her side when (she) left this good Earth.” The ex-president, who is 93 and has been in ill health in recent years, is “determined to be there” for his family while in mourning, Becker added. It sided with the Malaysian financier on Tuesday, calling the police actions “invalid” and “unlawful”. Indonesian authorities did not follow proper procedures concerning confiscation of assets sought by foreign authorities, it said.

“The Indonesian police acted beyond their power,” said presiding judge Ratmoho, who like many Indonesians goes by one name. “(The court) annuls the seizure.” Police spokesman Setyo Wasisto said authorities would abide by the decision, but could not say when the boat would be returned to Low. “we need to study the ruling first,” he added. General Manager of Geopark Rinjani, Chairul Mahsul, stated in West Nusa Tenggara provincial capital of Mataram over the weekend that the UNESCO executive board has designated Geopark Rinjani as a new member of the UNESCO Global Parks. Mahsul, who is also an assistant for economy and development of the secretariat of the West Nusa Tenggara provincial administration, expressed gratitude to all parties

for their assistance in achieving the Global Geopark status. Mount Rinjani is located in Mount Rinjani National Park, which straddles around the four districts of Lombok Utara, Lombok Barat, Lombok Tengah, and Lombok Timur in West Nusa Tenggara Province. One of the charms of the national park is Lake Segara Anak, which is located 2,010 meters above sea level. Part of the lake is located in the 3,726-meter-high volcano. More fuel, biometric gloves for F1 next season

PARIS - More fuel and biometric gloves for drivers were two of the changes agreed by Formula One’s ruling body the FIA on Tuesday for the 2019 season.

The new gloves are designed to improve safety and give medical staff a better picture of a driver’s condition after accidents. A sensor detects the pulse rate and amount of oxygen in the blood, and monitors body temperature. Cars from next season will carry 110kg rather than 105kg of fuel, to enable teams to “use the engine at full power at all times”, the FIA explained in a statement. A third tweak for next year involves separating a driver’s weight from that of the car so as not to penalise the heavier members of the grid. “Discussions will continue on proposals relating to aerodynamics, with a view to taking a decision by the end of April, once research being conducted by the FIA, in consultation with the teams, has been concluded,” the statement added. The changes were agreed after a meeting of F1’s strategy group and F1 commission at FIA headquarters in Paris attended by motorsport chief Jean Todt and F1 boss Chase Carey. The FIA also presented its proposals for the 2021 power units - a 1.6litre, V6 Turbo Hybrid. “The FIA Technical Department will now meet with current and potential power unit manufacturers to discuss in more detail, with a view to concluding the 2021 regulations by the end of May.” (afp)

MONTE CARLO - Austrian fifth seed Dominic Thiem saved match point in a gripping Monte Carlo Masters second-round win over Russian youngster Andrey Rublev on Tuesday, while Grigor Dimitrov and Alexander Zverev both came back from a set down to reach round three. A two-time French Open semifinalist, Thiem recovered from a set down to book a last-16 clash against either Novak Djokovic or Borna Coric with a 5-7, 7-5, 7-5 victory.

Thiem is playing in his first tournament since suffering an ankle injury at Indian Wells last month. Rublev spurned a chance to seal the match when he fired a forehand narrowly wide on his own serve late in the deciding set. “I had to fight from the first to the last point, which of course I did well. But I was also lucky at the end when he had a match point and missed a forehand by 10 centimetres or so,” said 24-yearold Thiem. “I was 10 centimetres from be-

Lionel Messi was thrown on as a substitute but 10-man Barcelona were relieved to escape with a draw as Celta Vigo came within a whisker of inflicting the Catalans’ first league defeat of the season on Tuesday. Vigo pushed for a late winner and should have had it when substitute Lucas Boye went through one-on-one but he took too long and Marc-Andre Ter Stegen made a crucial stop. “I think we deserved to win the game,” Celta Vigo coach Juan Carlos Unzue said. Earlier, a superb strike from Ousmane Dembele had been cancelled out by Jonny Castro’s close-range finish as Barcelona stretched their record unbeaten run to 40 La Liga games. Mauro Icardi scored his 25th goal of the Serie A campaign to help Inter Milan ease past Cagliari 4-0 to move third in Serie A on Tuesday, putting the pressure on Roman rivals Lazio and Roma in the battle for Champions League places. Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana has travelled to South Africa in a bid to save his World Cup dream as he gets specialist treatment on a hamstring injury. According to British media reports on Tuesday, Lallana is receiving treatment at the Sports Science Institute in Cape Town, which was selected by Liverpool’s medical department to aid the England international’s return to fitness. The 29-year-old has made just three starts and 10 substitute appearances in an injury-ravaged season which did not start until late November because of a thigh injury. Lallana’s latest comeback was ended prematurely in March when he was on the pitch for just five minutes before a hamstring injury forced him off at Crystal Palace. Liverpool have taken their time with Lallana in the second half of the season after Reds manager Jurgen Klopp admitted they had probably brought him back too soon from his initial setback. The club will continue that cautious approach in the final month of the campaign and while the midfielder has not yet been ruled out of their remaining matches he will hope to be able to prove his fitness in time for World Cup consideration.(afp)
