That commercial success could translate into Oscar attention when Academy Award nominations are announced next week.
It will likely face fierce competition from “La La Land,” a critically beloved movie musical with Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling. Fresh off its sweep of the Golden Globe awards, “La La Land” sang and danced its way to $17.5 million over the holiday period, good enough for a third place finish. That brings the Lionsgate release’s domestic total to $77 million and more than $132 million globally. Indonesian police question Islamist leader as authorities warn over extremism
JAKARTA - Indonesian police on Wednesday said they were investigating whether the controversial leader of a hardline Islamist group insulted the country’s secular state ideology, as concern grows over the clout of fundamentalist groups. National police chief Tito Karnavian has warned against creeping Islamic extremism in the country of 250 million, home to dozens of religious and ethnic groups, and where the vast majority of citizens practice a moderate form of Islam. Police are questioning Habib Rizieq, head of the hardline Islamic Defenders Front (FPI), a key organiser of recent rallies by hundreds of thousands of Muslims against Jakarta’s governor, an ethnic
Chinese Christian, who is on trial over accusations that he insulted the Muslim holy book, the Koran. “We have started a formal investigation...We may name him a suspect soon,” said West Java police spokesman Yusri Yunus. “Unfortunately, democracy is being misused by certain groups to limit other people’s freedoms, for instance, by those with fundamentalist or Wahabi thinking who then target minorities,” he added, referring to a puritanical strand of Islam
originating in Saudi Arabia. Police in the province of West Java have been questioning Rizieq over claims that he made defamatory comments in 2014 about one of Indonesia’s founding fathers, Sukarno, and questioned the legitimacy of the state ideology Pancasila. If found guilty, he could face up to four years in prison. Rizieq has denied wrongdoing, according to media. Reuters could not immediately reach him, or his representative, for comment. Rizieq and his followers have vowed to press their demand for Jakarta governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama to be jailed, with another rally set for February 11, just days before the Jakarta governor elections. “We see what happened with the Twitter accounts as a form of discrimination against the Muslim people,” said Novel Bamukmin, head of the FPI’s Jakarta chapter, which is calling for a boycott of Twitter.
Late last year the FPI led some of Indonesia’s biggest rallies in nearly 20 years targeting the Jakarta governor. Existence of homestay threatened, In low season, it underprices to IDR 150,000
GIANYAR - Rapid growth of budget accommodation like hotels and villas around Ubud becomes a great threat to the existence of homestay. Due to tight competition, a number of accommodation businessmen at this tourist village should underprice their room rate to IDR 150,000. as to give significant impact on the homestay which has become the icon in Ubud. “We (homestay owners—Ed) are increasingly eroded because our market segment is dominantly taken by city hotel. As a result, it kindles price competition in Ubud,” he said. He further explained that room rate of homestay in Ubud can drop to IDR 250,000 to IDR 400,000. Ironically, the worst condition happens during low season where the room rate drastically drops to IDR 150,000. “The lowest can reach IDR 150,000,” he explained. In the meantime, the room rate of budget hotel in normal season can still be maintained over IDR 1 million. However, during promotion period and low season the room rate of budget hotels can touch IDR 600,000. “Actually, it is the market segment of homestay. It can be checked in the current low season where they could make promotion by lowering their selling price,” he said. Wiryawan said that his association already made coordination with the government, particularly related to room needs and the number of tourist visit to Ubud in particular. “Yesterday, I asked the data on the total number of rooms and tourist visit to Ubud but they are not available. It should be adjusted so that the government does not continuously issue building permit of hotel,” he added. He said that currently there are approximately 200 owners of homestay in of Ubud and surrounding areas with a total of 1,000 rooms. Due to tight competition, it is quite difficult to fill in the rooms. “In essence, the licensing should be tightened, so that the construction of accommodation will not grow excessively,” he said. NEGARA - Thousands of fishermen of traditional boats whose life relies on their fish catches have been wrathful since the past few months. It happens because for almost a year they face fish famine in the waters of Jembrana. Economic condition in the coastal area is sluggish due to the impact of fish famine. As seen in the area of Nusantara Fishery Port (PPN) Pengambengan on Tuesday (Jan. 17), dozens of traditional fishing boats looked to line and anchored in the mooring pond. In the meantime, the activities in the area of fish weighing site (TPI) looked empty of people passing by. “Commonly, it is crowded here. Fish porters and fish transporting truck drivers rely on their life here. Fish famine has occurred since the past few months,” explained Abidin, a crew of traditional fishing boat on last Tuesday. According to him, this condition is also experienced by Muncar Harbor, Banyuwangi, having the same characteristics as Pengambengan. Currently fishermen are rarely going to sea. They prefer to moor their boat. “Even though going to sea, the operating cost is not comparable to the catches,” said Abidin. The condition is taken advantage by the owners of fishing boat to repair their engines and nets or clean up their boats.
Fishermen hoped this fish famine is soon over and the catch can be back to normal. Other than fishermen, fish factory, harbor and surrounding merchants also depend on their income on the sector. Headman of Pengambengan, Samsul Anam, confirmed the condition of fish famine on Tuesday. Majority of local resident having profession as fishermen is now experiencing anxiety due to loneliness of fish catch. Indeed, the fishermen have been familiar with fish famine, but today it takes a long time up to eight months. “Normally, it only lasts about three months. Last year the famine lasted long enough and remains until these days,” he explained. From his observation, many fishermen are unemployed and shift to work on mainland. Some are working at building construction, while others are fishing by traditional or fiber boat. Although they get small number of fish catch or particular fish, at least they can cover the necessities of daily life. Village hoped such conditions will change soon, so that the economy of the maritime sector could be back to normal again. He also hoped there will be fishermen cooperative that can accommodate the needs of fishermen when they face fish famine as it occurs today. (kmb26)
OJK emphasizes to act lawfully problems complained by consumers to YLPK such as the forcible withdrawal of costumers’ vehicle by debt collector. There is even a withdrawal of costumers’ car by using a tow truck by force. “Pursuant to complaints of costumers, their vehicle is directly executed when they pay late for two or three times. This execution by finance company does not comply with the procedures,” he said. According to him, if costumers’ vehicle is taken over forcibly by debt collector on highway it can be categorized into theft and if taken at home also constitutes a theft. “I do not blame on the actions of the
debt collector, but I would blame on the finance company that does not comply with the law,” said Armaya. Actually, if costumers are negligent and pay late, the finance may take costumers’ vehicle as long as it is in accordance with applicable laws. “Do not just see the mistake because costumers pay late, but the finance should also comply with the rules,” he added. On the other hand, the Head of the Financial Services Authority (OJK) for Regional VIII of BaliNusra, Zulmi, stated there are rules that must be followed by financing providers where communication
with debtors or customers is necessary to avoid misunderstanding. “Debtor must also be open and communicate to finance company if there are obstacles. If this has been done then misunderstandings that results in the withdrawal of vehicle can be avoided,” he said. He continued that both parties should be open. “Withdrawal will not happen if the payment runs smoothly,” he added. OJK is said to constantly remind so that any action taken must be according to the rules. Leasing company must register any credit transaction before a notary on the fiduciary agreement.

Brazil issues first license for sale of a cannabis-based drug
RIO DE JANEIRO - Brazilian healthcare regulator Anvisa on Monday said it had issued the country’s first license for sale of a cannabisbased drug in the country after years of legal wrangling with patients. The multiple sclerosis treatment, an oral spray derived from marijuana and developed by Britain’s GW Pharmaceuticals PLC, is known as Sativex internationally and will be sold in Brazil under the brand name Mevatyl. The legal status of cannabis-based drugs has been a thorny issue in Brazil for years, with several patients fighting in the courts to circumvent prohibition. Anvisa has loosened some restrictions in the past two years, allowing patients with medical orders to personally import some drugs derived from marijuana. COLICKY babies may cry less after treatment with a scaled-back version of acupuncture, according to a new study - but the results are controversial. Not everyone is convinced the needle therapy is beneficial for babies. Researchers in Sweden found colicky babies spent less time crying and were less likely to be colicky after two weeks of acupuncture compared to babies receiving usual care. “There is no safe medical treatment that has effect, but a nutritional supplement of Lactobacillus reuteri can be tried, and meeting a supportive professional may relieve the burden of colic,” lead author Dr. Kajsa Landgren, of Lund University, told Reuters Health in an email. If babies cry more than three hours per day, parents may want to consider removing cow’s milk from their diets, she said. “For those infants who still have colic, minimal acupuncture seems to be a safe and effective treatment.” About 10 to 20 percent of families have had babies who cry excessively, write Landgren and Inger Hallstrom in the journal Acupuncture in Medicine. For the new study, they recruited 426 healthy infants aged two to eight weeks, but only 157 were enrolled in the trial. Many infants didn’t actually have colic and some parents did not want to participate. The babies were randomly assigned to receive one of two types of acupuncture or usual care, which included regular wellness visits. “In children, fewer needles are used, and the stimulation of the needles is mild and short compared to treating adults,” said Landgren. “In other trials, laser-acupuncture
and acupressure have been used in babies.” Overall, 147 babies completed the two-week trial. The researchers say babies receiving acupuncture improved more on measures of crying than those who got usual care. For example, babies getting acupuncture spent 40 percent less time crying from their first visit to their last, compared to a 20 percent difference among babies who received usual care. Infants who received acupuncture were also less likely to meet the criteria for colic after a week or two of the intervention, the study found. The infants collectively received 388 acupuncture sessions. Babies cried during 188 of those sessions, and the people delivering the acupuncture reported seeing a single drop of blood 15 times. “For otherwise healthy infants who according to a diary actually cry more than three hours/day, and elimination of cow´s milk protein or a nutritional supplement with lactobacillus reuteri did not help, I think acupuncture can be tried, provided that an acupuncturist trained in pediatric acupuncture is available,” said Landgren. The study had too few participants to say whether one acupuncture technique outperformed the other. In addition, statisticians who reviewed the paper for the Science Media Center, a UK-based news service, were concerned that the babies’ parents might have been able to guess what treatment the babies received, which could have biased the results. They also point out that combining results from the two acupuncture groups, as the study did, could be a potential source of bias. (rtr)
GIANYAR - Tidal waves still occur along the shoreline of Gianyar district. As a result, it aggravates the damages to breakwater at a number of beaches, such as on Cucukan Beach, Blahbatuh. These damages are known to have occurred for many years, but until now there has been no repair made by provincial government through the Bali-Penida River Agency. As seen on Tuesday (Jan. 17), condition of the breakwater on Cucukan Beach looked to have been damaged, even many parts are broken. Surely this condition also makes the existing lands behind the breakwater continuously get eroded by the waves. Moreover, early this year the waves continue to hit the shoreline of Gianyar. Based on the information compiled, this damage has occurred for long time, but it does not get any handling yet from the government. When seeing at the other points, a number of cylindrical concrete breakwaters previously used to protect the beach from the waves began to be withdrawn by tidal waves toward the sea. Currently,
the shoreline is increasingly threatened by abrasion. A number of other coastal areas in Gianyar district is also currently threatened by the abrasion. The shoreline is gradually destroyed by waves to reach agricultural area owned by local residents. Head of the Gianyar Public Works Agency, I Nyoman Nuadi, who confirmed about this matter, said the installation of breakwater at the shoreline is under the authority of the provincial government of Bali, in this case the Bali-Penida River Agency. “The authority to repair the breakwater lies in the provincial government,” he said. Nevertheless, district government still has the right to propose improvements for the coastal breakwater. However, the repair is awaiting execution from the Bali-Penida River Agency. “Later on, we will convey the proposal of improvement for the breakwater in Gianyar that starts to break down so as to be immediately repaired. However, when it will be repaired depends on decision in the province,” he explained. (kmb35)

During which, there has never been any salary improvement so that they can be given decent salaries. On that account, when there is a program for recruiting contract class and sport teachers, internship teachers at local village are so eager to participate. To that end, they have also prepared themselves as well as possible in order to pass in the selection. Hopefully, after passing the selection they will receive more decent salary as a worker. “Now, if the fate of internship teachers is not im-
mediately raised, the paradigm in the community will be increasingly difficult to change. Handling of slums questionable
DENPASAR - Until now Denpasar still has some points of slum area. Their existence is considered to blemish Denpasar that carries the concept of cultured city and develops city tours. On that account, the handling of slum area has to be undertaken though facing various obstacles. Relevant agencies are expected to make a breakthrough in minimizing the slums. This was conveyed by a member of Commission III of the Denpasar House of Representatives, I.B. Ketut Kiana, in the work meeting with the Denpasar Housing, Settlement and Land Agency on Monday (Jan. 16). “We want to know about the program of this agency in handling slum areas in Denpasar. For example, on the edge of Badung River, we can still meet the slums,” said this Hanura politician. Kiana admitted there are obstacles in arranging the slums. For example, the land is in the lease status and there are other constraints. However, they can be resolved by a more intense supervision to the field. “Indeed, it is difficult to arrange the slums. However, it cannot be tolerated because Denpasar city is promoting city tour program,” he said. Responding to the issue, the Head of the Denpasar Housing, Settlement and Land Agency, I Made Kusuma Diputra, said there are some programs to be conducted in 2017. At least three areas will get
priority from his agency in reducing slum areas. “We have planned the arrangement for the slums at several locations this year,” he said. One of the priorities is the slum at Wanasari neighborhood. The slums in the region will be endeavored to be arranged, at least for the garden. Currently, his agency also has the authority to arrange the garden. Aside from the region, his agency has planned the arrangement to the slums on the outskirts of Badung River. It also includes the arrangement to the buildings on Jalan Sulawesi. Hopefully, within the next few years, the appearance of shophouses on the edge of Badung River could be beautified. All this time, the flow of Badung River becomes the back side of the shop-houses in the lane. Looking ahead, he hoped the flow of Badung River can be used as the front side, so that there is a different nuance when seeing the flow of Badung River. “At least, they will have a terrace at the back side,” he added. This can be seen from the amount of production that has not been able to meet the market demand. Currently, fish farmers in Tabanan are encouraged to cultivate freshwater fish, especially catfish and tilapia that gets high demand. Moreover, the acreage of freshwater fish farming in 2017 is targeted to increase to 80 hectares from the current 60 hectares. Head of the Tabanan Fisheries and Maritime Affairs, I Made Subagia, said that the current fish stocking area of 60 hectares for all freshwater fish species is considered inadequate to meet the market demand. “Therefore, we target 80 hectares of freshwater fish stocking. Hopefully, this acreage can be achieved in 2017,” he said. If calculated, the average freshwater fish production in 2016 amounted to 125 tons per month. The whole production could be absorbed by the market. “The market is not only in Tabanan, but also Bali. Since the results of freshwater fish farm has not met the market demand, the needs of freshwater fish in Tabanan and Bali in general is mostly supplied from Java,” said Subagia. Seeing this opportunity, the government of Tabanan encouraged farmers to cultivate freshwater fish. Until now, there have been about 200 groups. Farmers cultivating fish farm got the assistance from central government in the form of coaching and production facilities such as the provision of fingerlings. Then, the land used to make pond and maintenance is conducted independently. The obstacle faced by freshwater famers, said Subagia, is the rainy season. Many fingerlings stocked during rainy season die. However, with the adoption of SOP, the death of the fingerlings can be reduced and do not bring in severe losses. “So far, there is no death of large fish en masse. MANGUPURA - Vinay Mittal, a 29-year-old man from India, was arrested by immigration officers at Ngurah Rai International Airport on Monday (Jan. 16) at 20:07. Mittal is an Interpol fugitive related to fraud and forgery cases. Furthermore, he was secured at Ngurah Rai Immigration Office. As information compiled in the field on Tuesday (Jan. 17), Mittal was secured in the international arrival terminal of Ngurah Rai Airport. Previously, the immigration officers received a report pursuant to red notice of Interpol number A-9525/10-2016 dated October 21, 2016 related to fraud and forgery cases. Furthermore, it has been followed up by making coordination with the international relations division of the National Police and surveillance since October 21, 2016. After several days of monitoring in the field, ultimately last Monday his name has been blacklisted by immigration office based on wanted list issued by Interpol,” said the source. Chief of the First Class Special Immigration Office of Ngurah Rai, Ari Budijanto, when asked for his confirmation justified the arrest of Vinay Mittal. According to him, the culprit has been blacklisted by immigration office from entering the country due to his involvement in fraud and forgery cases. According to Ari, Mittal has not been questioned because he was just arrested. “After being arrested, he was put into detention room and calmed down first. It takes time to question him. We’ve been coordinating with the national police for further process. According to the SOP, the culprit must be submitted to the national police headquarters,” he said. FRANKFURT - U.S President-elect Donald Trump warned German car companies he would impose a border tax of 35 percent on vehicles imported to the U.S. market, a plan that drew sharp rebukes from Berlin and hit the automakers’ shares.
In an interview with German newspaper Bild, published on Monday, Trump criticised German carmakers such as BMW, Daimler and Volkswagen for failing to produce more cars on U.S. soil. “If you want to build cars in the world, then I wish you all the best. You can build cars for the United States, but for every car that comes to the USA, you will pay 35 percent tax,” Trump said in remarks translated into German. “I would tell BMW that if you are building a factory in Mexico and plan to sell cars to the USA, without a 35 percent tax, then you can forget that,” Trump said. Volkswagen (VW) shares closed down 2.2 percent, while BMW and Daimler’s shares ended 1.5 percent lower. Under pressure to deliver on campaign promises to revive U.S. industrial jobs, Trump has turned his fire on carmakers that use low-cost Mexican plants to serve the U.S. market. He has also warned Japan’s Toyota it could be subject to a “big border tax” if it builds its Corolla cars for the U.S. market at a planned factory in Mexico. DAVOS - Chinese President Xi Jinping offered a vigorous defence of globalisation and free trade in a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Tuesday, which underscored Beijing’s desire to play a greater global role as the United States turns inward. Likening protectionism to “locking oneself in a dark room” to protect from danger, but at the same time depriving the room of “light and air”, he cautioned other countries against pursuing their own interests at the expense of others. Xi did not mention Donald Trump in his speech of nearly an hour but many of the messages he sent seemed directed at the U.S. president-elect, who campaigned for the White House on pledges to protect U.S. industries from foreign competition and levy new tariffs on goods from China and Mexico.
“No one will emerge as a winner in a trade war,” Xi told the forum in the Swiss Alps. He said economic globalisation has become a “Pandora’s Box” for many, but that it was not the cause of many global problems. He added that international financial crises were caused by the excessive pursuit of profits, not globalisation. Xi’s appearance, a first for a Chinese leader at the annual meeting of political leaders, CEOs and bankers in Davos, came as doubts emerge about whether the United States will remain a force for multilateral cooperation on issues like trade and climate change. Europe, meanwhile, is pre-occupied with its own troubles, from Brexit and militant attacks to the string of elections this year in which anti-globalisation populists could score gains. This has left a vacuum that

A Unique Pendet Pasepan Dance
The pendet dance perfromed for the piodalan of the Dalem Temple of Setra Batununggul customary village in Nusa Penida, is both sacred and unique. Although the form of this pendet dance resembles other pendet dances, here, supporting devotees of the temple perform the pendet while holding small bowls of fire -known as pasepan, in their hands as they dance. This sacred dance is performed after supporting devotees of the temple express their genuine devotion and gratitude for the blessings that have been bestowed, through the melasti or purificatory rite procession for Ida Bhatara (deities). Dance coordinator I Dewa Gede Rai Sudiarta explained that the form of this pendet is the same as other pendet dances exept that instead of holding flower offerings, the dancers carry the pasepan. “The concept of this sacred dance has to do with generating an aura of spiritual purity. The means used is called agni hotra”, he said. The Pendet Pasepan Dance is a calssical Balinese ritual that is particular to Nusa Penida and is filled with spiritual nuances. The number of dancers involved is not determined, but depends on how many people are able to carry it out. It is categorized as a sacred dance because it is closely related to spiritual arts and ritual traditions . “It is danced with sincerity by young women who want to devote themselves sincerely and flexibly”, said Rai Sudiarta. This pendet dance is accompanied by terompongan gamelan instruments that carry classical spiritual meaning. The Pendet Pasepan Dance was last performed on the piodalan of Dalem Temple of Setra Batununggul customary village, Nusa Penida, on November 14. (kmb)

BRUSSELS - A raft of new counterterrorism laws across Europe discriminate against Muslims and refugees, spreading fear and alienation, Amnesty International said in a report on Tuesday. The human rights group sounded the alarm over security measures adopted over the past two years in 14 EU nations, including expanded surveillance powers. During that period, militant attacks have killed some 280 people in France, Belgium and Germany. The attacks, mostly claimed by the Islamic State group, have fanned tensions over immigration, fuelled the popularity of right-wing parties and made security a key theme in upcoming French, Dutch and German elections. “Right across the EU regional space we see Muslims and foreigners being equated with terrorists,” said Julia Hall, an Amnesty International expert on counterterrorism and author of the report. “This stereotyping so disproportionately affects these communities that there
is a high degree of fear and alienation.” She warned that “draconian” surveillance measures and powers of search, detention and arrest like those introduced in France since November 2015, when attacks killed 130 people, could be abused to target activists or minority groups that did not pose a genuine threat. Amnesty is critical of a European Union draft law, to be adopted this year, that seeks to punish people for travelling or planning to travel to join a terrorist group. It says the wording of the law is unclear and it casts too wide a net. A European Commission spokeswoman rejected Amnesty’s criticism and said the EU would closely monitor for potential abuses in the bloc’s 28 member states. EU Security Commissioner Julian King said he agreed with the report that fundamental rights must not be put at risk. “That is what the terrorists are attacking,” he said on Twitter. (rtr)
JAKARTA - Environmental group Greenpeace International on Tuesday slammed HSBC Holdings Plc for allegedly funding palm oil companies in Indonesia that it says have destroyed tropical rainforests. HSBC and other banks lent to palm oil companies that are “responsible for unacceptable activities”, Greenpeace said in a report, highlighting loans worth hundreds of millions of dollars given out by the London-based bank since 2012 to six companies allegedly responsible for deforestation in Indonesia. The report, which also alleges violations of labour laws and operating licenses, follows a trend of increasing pressure being brought to bear by green groups on corporations in Europe to clean up their supply chains in countries such as Indonesia and Malaysia. “By providing financing without proper diligence on sustainability, banks enable the palm oil sector’s destructive practices to continue,” the green group added. HSBC said its policies call for sustainable and legal practices. “HSBC’s policies prohibit the financing of operations that are illegal, damage high-conservation value forest... or violate the rights of workers and local people,” the
bank said in an emailed statement. “We are not aware of any current instances where customers are alleged to be operating outside our policy and where we have not taken, or are not taking, appropriate action,” the bank added. Indonesia is the world’s biggest producer of palm oil, an edible oil used in a range of products from chocolate to soap. Environmentalists say millions of hectares of forests have been cleared to make way for plantations, often by smallholder farmers using slashand-burn methods that blanket the region in haze every year. “(HSBC) claims its policies ‘prohibit the finance of deforestation’, although many companies that it funds are destroying forests,” Greenpeace added. Greenpeace urged HSBC, Europe’s biggest bank, to step up due diligence on clients and not rely on standards set by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). RSPO has recently come under fire from environmentalists for its poor handling of complaints against members, prompting groups such as Nestle to step up their own checks on suppliers. for at least a year. The Air Force is still looking for a potential replacement,” he said. There are several candidates as the replacement of F-5E/F Tiger II, namely JAS39 Gripen (Sweden), Sukhoi Su-35 (Russia), F-16 Block 60 Viper (US), and Eurofighter Typhoon (Airbus-Europe). It was Saab AB as the manufacturer of JAS39 Gripen who openly and transparently detailed transfer of technology and acquisition scheme from the very beginning. He also stated the Air Force will increase its numbers of air defense radars to 32 from the 20 radars currently in service. “We are hoping to be able to cover more area in order to avoid violations of Indonesian air space,” he added. By implementing good management and improving the Air Force fleet, Tjahjanto believes that a target of zero accidents could be achieved. President Joko Widodo appointed Tjahjanto as the new Air Force Chief of Staff after he previously served as Inspector General of the Defense Ministry. He graduated from the Air Force Academy in 1986. ABU DHABI - World number two Rory McIlroy has withdrawn from the Abu Dhabi Championship after tests on Monday showed he picked up a rib injury in South Africa last week, the European Tour said. The Northern Irishman had intense physiotherapy treatment and took painkillers over the weekend at the South Africa Open after struggling through much of Friday’s second round. Police say 526 possible victims in UK soccer abuse scandal, 184 suspects
LONDON - British police investigating allegations of widespread child sex abuse at soccer clubs dating back to the 1970s said on Wednesday they had now identified 184 potential suspects and 526 victims, adding other sports had also been implicated in the scandal. Police forces across the country launched inquiries after former player Andy Woodward revealed in November he had been abused as a boy by a youth team coach, prompting other ex-professionals to come forward with allegations. The soccer abuse revelations are the latest in a series of paedophile

BRUSSELS - A raft of new counterterrorism laws across Europe discriminate against Muslims and refugees, spreading fear and alienation, Amnesty International said in a report on Tuesday. The human rights group sounded the alarm over security measures adopted over the past two years in 14 EU nations, including expanded surveillance powers. During that period, militant attacks have killed some 280 people in France, Belgium and Germany. The attacks, mostly claimed by the Islamic State group, have fanned tensions over immigration, fuelled the popularity of right-wing parties and made security a key theme in upcoming French, Dutch and German elections. “Right across the EU regional space we see Muslims and foreigners being equated with terrorists,” said Julia Hall, an Amnesty International expert on counterterrorism and author of the report. “This stereotyping so disproportionately affects these communities that there
is a high degree of fear and alienation.” She warned that “draconian” surveillance measures and powers of search, detention and arrest like those introduced in France since November 2015, when attacks killed 130 people, could be abused to target activists or minority groups that did not pose a genuine threat. Amnesty is critical of a European Union draft law, to be adopted this year, that seeks to punish people for travelling or planning to travel to join a terrorist group. It says the wording of the law is unclear and it casts too wide a net. A European Commission spokeswoman rejected Amnesty’s criticism and said the EU would closely monitor for potential abuses in the bloc’s 28 member states. EU Security Commissioner Julian King said he agreed with the report that fundamental rights must not be put at risk. “That is what the terrorists are attacking,” he said on Twitter. (rtr)
JAKARTA - Environmental group Greenpeace International on Tuesday slammed HSBC Holdings Plc for allegedly funding palm oil companies in Indonesia that it says have destroyed tropical rainforests. HSBC and other banks lent to palm oil companies that are “responsible for unacceptable activities”, Greenpeace said in a report, highlighting loans worth hundreds of millions of dollars given out by the London-based bank since 2012 to six companies allegedly responsible for deforestation in Indonesia. The report, which also alleges violations of labour laws and operating licenses, follows a trend of increasing pressure being brought to bear by green groups on corporations in Europe to clean up their supply chains in countries such as Indonesia and Malaysia. “By providing financing without proper diligence on sustainability, banks enable the palm oil sector’s destructive practices to continue,” the green group added. HSBC said its policies call for sustainable and legal practices. “HSBC’s policies prohibit the financing of operations that are illegal, damage high-conservation value forest... or violate the rights of workers and local people,” the
bank said in an emailed statement. “We are not aware of any current instances where customers are alleged to be operating outside our policy and where we have not taken, or are not taking, appropriate action,” the bank added. Indonesia is the world’s biggest producer of palm oil, an edible oil used in a range of products from chocolate to soap. Environmentalists say millions of hectares of forests have been cleared to make way for plantations, often by smallholder farmers using slashand-burn methods that blanket the region in haze every year. “(HSBC) claims its policies ‘prohibit the finance of deforestation’, although many companies that it funds are destroying forests,” Greenpeace added. Greenpeace urged HSBC, Europe’s biggest bank, to step up due diligence on clients and not rely on standards set by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). RSPO has recently come under fire from environmentalists for its poor handling of complaints against members, prompting groups such as Nestle to step up their own checks on suppliers. for at least a year. The Air Force is still looking for a potential replacement,” he said. There are several candidates as the replacement of F-5E/F Tiger II, namely JAS39 Gripen (Sweden), Sukhoi Su-35 (Russia), F-16 Block 60 Viper (US), and Eurofighter Typhoon (Airbus-Europe). It was Saab AB as the manufacturer of JAS39 Gripen who openly and transparently detailed transfer of technology and acquisition scheme from the very beginning. He also stated the Air Force will increase its numbers of air defense radars to 32 from the 20 radars currently in service. “We are hoping to be able to cover more area in order to avoid violations of Indonesian air space,” he added. By implementing good management and improving the Air Force fleet, Tjahjanto believes that a target of zero accidents could be achieved. President Joko Widodo appointed Tjahjanto as the new Air Force Chief of Staff after he previously served as Inspector General of the Defense Ministry. He graduated from the Air Force Academy in 1986. FRANKFURT - U.S President-elect Donald Trump warned German car companies he would impose a border tax of 35 percent on vehicles imported to the U.S. market, a plan that drew sharp rebukes from Berlin and hit the automakers’ shares.
In an interview with German newspaper Bild, published on Monday, Trump criticised German carmakers such as BMW, Daimler and Volkswagen for failing to produce more cars on U.S. soil. “If you want to build cars in the world, then I wish you all the best. You can build cars for the United States, but for every car that comes to the USA, you will pay 35 percent tax,” Trump said in remarks translated into German. “I would tell BMW that if you are building a factory in Mexico and plan to sell cars to the USA, without a 35 percent tax, then you can forget that,” Trump said. Volkswagen (VW) shares closed down 2.2 percent, while BMW and Daimler’s shares ended 1.5 percent lower. Under pressure to deliver on campaign promises to revive U.S. industrial jobs, Trump has turned his fire on carmakers that use low-cost Mexican plants to serve the U.S. market. He has also warned Japan’s Toyota it could be subject to a “big border tax” if it builds its Corolla cars for the U.S. market at a planned factory in Mexico. DAVOS - Chinese President Xi Jinping offered a vigorous defence of globalisation and free trade in a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Tuesday, which underscored Beijing’s desire to play a greater global role as the United States turns inward. Likening protectionism to “locking oneself in a dark room” to protect from danger, but at the same time depriving the room of “light and air”, he cautioned other countries against pursuing their own interests at the expense of others. Xi did not mention Donald Trump in his speech of nearly an hour but many of the messages he sent seemed directed at the U.S. president-elect, who campaigned for the White House on pledges to protect U.S. industries from foreign competition and levy new tariffs on goods from China and Mexico.
“No one will emerge as a winner in a trade war,” Xi told the forum in the Swiss Alps. He said economic globalisation has become a “Pandora’s Box” for many, but that it was not the cause of many global problems. He added that international financial crises were caused by the excessive pursuit of profits, not globalisation. Xi’s appearance, a first for a Chinese leader at the annual meeting of political leaders, CEOs and bankers in Davos, came as doubts emerge about whether the United States will remain a force for multilateral cooperation on issues like trade and climate change. Europe, meanwhile, is pre-occupied with its own troubles, from Brexit and militant attacks to the string of elections this year in which anti-globalisation populists could score gains. This has left a vacuum that
China seems eager to fill. “It is no coincidence that Xi chose this year to make the trip up the magic mountain,” said Ian Bremmer, president of Eurasia Group, a U.S.-based political risk consultancy. A Unique Pendet Pasepan Dance
The pendet dance perfromed for the piodalan of the Dalem Temple of Setra Batununggul customary village in Nusa Penida, is both sacred and unique. Although the form of this pendet dance resembles other pendet dances, here, supporting devotees of the temple perform the pendet while holding small bowls of fire -known as pasepan, in their hands as they dance. This sacred dance is performed after supporting devotees of the temple express their genuine devotion and gratitude for the blessings that have been bestowed, through the melasti or purificatory rite procession for Ida Bhatara (deities). Dance coordinator I Dewa Gede Rai Sudiarta explained that the form of this pendet is the same as other pendet dances exept that instead of holding flower offerings, the dancers carry the pasepan. “The concept of this sacred dance has to do with generating an aura of spiritual purity. The means used is called agni hotra”, he said. The Pendet Pasepan Dance is a calssical Balinese ritual that is particular to Nusa Penida and is filled with spiritual nuances. The number of dancers involved is not determined, but depends on how many people are able to carry it out. It is categorized as a sacred dance because it is closely related to spiritual arts and ritual traditions . “It is danced with sincerity by young women who want to devote themselves sincerely and flexibly”, said Rai Sudiarta. This pendet dance is accompanied by terompongan gamelan instruments that carry classical spiritual meaning. The Pendet Pasepan Dance was last performed on the piodalan of Dalem Temple of Setra Batununggul customary village, Nusa Penida, on November 14. (kmb)

Handling of slums questionable
DENPASAR - Until now Denpasar still has some points of slum area. Their existence is considered to blemish Denpasar that carries the concept of cultured city and develops city tours. On that account, the handling of slum area has to be undertaken though facing various obstacles. Relevant agencies are expected to make a breakthrough in minimizing the slums. This was conveyed by a member of Commission III of the Denpasar House of Representatives, I.B. Ketut Kiana, in the work meeting with the Denpasar Housing, Settlement and Land Agency on Monday (Jan. 16). “We want to know about the program of this agency in handling slum areas in Denpasar. For example, on the edge of Badung River, we can still meet the slums,” said this Hanura politician. Kiana admitted there are obstacles in arranging the slums. For example, the land is in the lease status and there are other constraints. However, they can be resolved by a more intense supervision to the field. “Indeed, it is difficult to arrange the slums. However, it cannot be tolerated because Denpasar city is promoting city tour program,” he said. Responding to the issue, the Head of the Denpasar Housing, Settlement and Land Agency, I Made Kusuma Diputra, said there are some programs to be conducted in 2017. At least three areas will get
priority from his agency in reducing slum areas. “We have planned the arrangement for the slums at several locations this year,” he said. One of the priorities is the slum at Wanasari neighborhood. The slums in the region will be endeavored to be arranged, at least for the garden. Currently, his agency also has the authority to arrange the garden. Aside from the region, his agency has planned the arrangement to the slums on the outskirts of Badung River. It also includes the arrangement to the buildings on Jalan Sulawesi. Hopefully, within the next few years, the appearance of shophouses on the edge of Badung River could be beautified. All this time, the flow of Badung River becomes the back side of the shop-houses in the lane. Looking ahead, he hoped the flow of Badung River can be used as the front side, so that there is a different nuance when seeing the flow of Badung River. “At least, they will have a terrace at the back side,” he added. This can be seen from the amount of production that has not been able to meet the market demand. Currently, fish farmers in Tabanan are encouraged to cultivate freshwater fish, especially catfish and tilapia that gets high demand. Moreover, the acreage of freshwater fish farming in 2017 is targeted to increase to 80 hectares from the current 60 hectares. Head of the Tabanan Fisheries and Maritime Affairs, I Made Subagia, said that the current fish stocking area of 60 hectares for all freshwater fish species is considered inadequate to meet the market demand. “Therefore, we target 80 hectares of freshwater fish stocking. Hopefully, this acreage can be achieved in 2017,” he said. If calculated, the average freshwater fish production in 2016 amounted to 125 tons per month. The whole production could be absorbed by the market. “The market is not only in Tabanan, but also Bali. Since the results of freshwater fish farm has not met the market demand, the needs of freshwater fish in Tabanan and Bali in general is mostly supplied from Java,” said Subagia. Seeing this opportunity, the government of Tabanan encouraged farmers to cultivate freshwater fish. Until now, there have been about 200 groups. Farmers cultivating fish farm got the assistance from central government in the form of coaching and production facilities such as the provision of fingerlings. Then, the land used to make pond and maintenance is conducted independently. The obstacle faced by freshwater famers, said Subagia, is the rainy season. Many fingerlings stocked during rainy season die. However, with the adoption of SOP, the death of the fingerlings can be reduced and do not bring in severe losses. “So far, there is no death of large fish en masse. MANGUPURA - Vinay Mittal, a 29-year-old man from India, was arrested by immigration officers at Ngurah Rai International Airport on Monday (Jan. 16) at 20:07. Mittal is an Interpol fugitive related to fraud and forgery cases. Furthermore, he was secured at Ngurah Rai Immigration Office. As information compiled in the field on Tuesday (Jan. 17), Mittal was secured in the international arrival terminal of Ngurah Rai Airport. Previously, the immigration officers received a report pursuant to red notice of Interpol number A-9525/10-2016 dated October 21, 2016 related to fraud and forgery cases. Furthermore, it has been followed up by making coordination with the international relations division of the National Police and surveillance since October 21, 2016. After several days of monitoring in the field, ultimately last Monday his name has been blacklisted by immigration office based on wanted list issued by Interpol,” said the source. Chief of the First Class Special Immigration Office of Ngurah Rai, Ari Budijanto, when asked for his confirmation justified the arrest of Vinay Mittal. According to him, the culprit has been blacklisted by immigration office from entering the country due to his involvement in fraud and forgery cases. According to Ari, Mittal has not been questioned because he was just arrested. “After being arrested, he was put into detention room and calmed down first. It takes time to question him. We’ve been coordinating with the national police for further process. According to the SOP, the culprit must be submitted to the national police headquarters,” he said. COLICKY babies may cry less after treatment with a scaled-back version of acupuncture, according to a new study - but the results are controversial. Not everyone is convinced the needle therapy is beneficial for babies. Researchers in Sweden found colicky babies spent less time crying and were less likely to be colicky after two weeks of acupuncture compared to babies receiving usual care. “There is no safe medical treatment that has effect, but a nutritional supplement of Lactobacillus reuteri can be tried, and meeting a supportive professional may relieve the burden of colic,” lead author Dr. Kajsa Landgren, of Lund University, told Reuters Health in an email. If babies cry more than three hours per day, parents may want to consider removing cow’s milk from their diets, she said. “For those infants who still have colic, minimal acupuncture seems to be a safe and effective treatment.” About 10 to 20 percent of families have had babies who cry excessively, write Landgren and Inger Hallstrom in the journal Acupuncture in Medicine. For the new study, they recruited 426 healthy infants aged two to eight weeks, but only 157 were enrolled in the trial. Many infants didn’t actually have colic and some parents did not want to participate. The babies were randomly assigned to receive one of two types of acupuncture or usual care, which included regular wellness visits. “In children, fewer needles are used, and the stimulation of the needles is mild and short compared to treating adults,” said Landgren. “In other trials, laser-acupuncture
and acupressure have been used in babies.” Overall, 147 babies completed the two-week trial. The researchers say babies receiving acupuncture improved more on measures of crying than those who got usual care. For example, babies getting acupuncture spent 40 percent less time crying from their first visit to their last, compared to a 20 percent difference among babies who received usual care. Infants who received acupuncture were also less likely to meet the criteria for colic after a week or two of the intervention, the study found. The infants collectively received 388 acupuncture sessions. Babies cried during 188 of those sessions, and the people delivering the acupuncture reported seeing a single drop of blood 15 times. “For otherwise healthy infants who according to a diary actually cry more than three hours/day, and elimination of cow´s milk protein or a nutritional supplement with lactobacillus reuteri did not help, I think acupuncture can be tried, provided that an acupuncturist trained in pediatric acupuncture is available,” said Landgren. The study had too few participants to say whether one acupuncture technique outperformed the other. In addition, statisticians who reviewed the paper for the Science Media Center, a UK-based news service, were concerned that the babies’ parents might have been able to guess what treatment the babies received, which could have biased the results. GIANYAR - Tidal waves still occur along the shoreline of Gianyar district. As a result, it aggravates the damages to breakwater at a number of beaches, such as on Cucukan Beach, Blahbatuh. These damages are known to have occurred for many years, but until now there has been no repair made by provincial government through the Bali-Penida River Agency. As seen on Tuesday (Jan. 17), condition of the breakwater on Cucukan Beach looked to have been damaged, even many parts are broken. Surely this condition also makes the existing lands behind the breakwater continuously get eroded by the waves. Moreover, early this year the waves continue to hit the shoreline of Gianyar. Based on the information compiled, this damage has occurred for long time, but it does not get any handling yet from the government. When seeing at the other points, a number of cylindrical concrete breakwaters previously used to protect the beach from the waves began to be withdrawn by tidal waves toward the sea. Currently,
the shoreline is increasingly threatened by abrasion. A number of other coastal areas in Gianyar district is also currently threatened by the abrasion. The shoreline is gradually destroyed by waves to reach agricultural area owned by local residents. Head of the Gianyar Public Works Agency, I Nyoman Nuadi, who confirmed about this matter, said the installation of breakwater at the shoreline is under the authority of the provincial government of Bali, in this case the Bali-Penida River Agency. “The authority to repair the breakwater lies in the provincial government,” he said. Nevertheless, district government still has the right to propose improvements for the coastal breakwater. However, the repair is awaiting execution from the Bali-Penida River Agency. “Later on, we will convey the proposal of improvement for the breakwater in Gianyar that starts to break down so as to be immediately repaired. Agung Pasrisak said that recruitment of contract worker for class and sport teacher is enthusiastically responded by teachers, especially the internship teachers at West Tianyar village. At the village, there are many people with bachelor degree remaining to become internship teachers. More sadly, they have served for a dozen years with a salary of only IDR 250,000 per month. There are totally 60 bachelors who are still serving with ‘brazen’ earnings as such. They have served for dozens of years. During which, there has never been any salary improvement so that they can be given decent salaries. On that account, when there is a program for recruiting contract class and sport teachers, internship teachers at local village are so eager to participate. To that end, they have also prepared themselves as well as possible in order to pass in the selection. Hopefully, after passing the selection they will receive more decent salary as a worker. “Now, if the fate of internship teachers is not im-
mediately raised, the paradigm in the community will be increasingly difficult to change. They will no longer consider the education important because people graduating from higher education in fact get far lower monthly income than begging a day,” said Pasrisak when accompanying the demonstration with people naming themselves as the Karangasem Care Movement to parliament of Karangasem. The demonstration involved dozens of residents. One of the other public figures participating in it, Gede Susila, questioned about the attitude of the parliament that recommended delaying the recruitment process. Actually, a series of processes have been running where the next stage is written test and practice. This Manggis community figure considered the recruitment process should be resumed first to finish. Then, it needs to be evaluated for improvement in the future. “Is there anything wrong in the process of recruitment mechanism? Do not care about the issues from unclear sources as the reason to delay,” he said. Chairman of the Karangasem House of Representatives, Nengah Sumardi, when answering the questions of the demonstrators affirmed that the parliament never decided to cancel. Basis of the delay, according to him, is clear because there are many inputs from the members and complaints from the public related to the selection process from the beginning. He reiterated that the delay is not intended to obstruct the selection process. It is made solely for the transparency of the selection process, so as not to result in problems later on. “We want to work on the basis of institutional context. GIANYAR - Rapid growth of budget accommodation like hotels and villas around Ubud becomes a great threat to the existence of homestay. Due to tight competition, a number of accommodation businessmen at this tourist village should underprice their room rate to IDR 150,000. as to give significant impact on the homestay which has become the icon in Ubud. “We (homestay owners—Ed) are increasingly eroded because our market segment is dominantly taken by city hotel. As a result, it kindles price competition in Ubud,” he said. He further explained that room rate of homestay in Ubud can drop to IDR 250,000 to IDR 400,000. Ironically, the worst condition happens during low season where the room rate drastically drops to IDR 150,000. “The lowest can reach IDR 150,000,” he explained. In the meantime, the room rate of budget hotel in normal season can still be maintained over IDR 1 million. However, during promotion period and low season the room rate of budget hotels can touch IDR 600,000. “Actually, it is the market segment of homestay. It can be checked in the current low season where they could make promotion by lowering their selling price,” he said. Wiryawan said that his association already made coordination with the government, particularly related to room needs and the number of tourist visit to Ubud in particular. “Yesterday, I asked the data on the total number of rooms and tourist visit to Ubud but they are not available. It should be adjusted so that the government does not continuously issue building permit of hotel,” he added. He said that currently there are approximately 200 owners of homestay in of Ubud and surrounding areas with a total of 1,000 rooms. Due to tight competition, it is quite difficult to fill in the rooms. “In essence, the licensing should be tightened, so that the construction of accommodation will not grow excessively,” he said. NEGARA - Thousands of fishermen of traditional boats whose life relies on their fish catches have been wrathful since the past few months. It happens because for almost a year they face fish famine in the waters of Jembrana. Economic condition in the coastal area is sluggish due to the impact of fish famine. As seen in the area of Nusantara Fishery Port (PPN) Pengambengan on Tuesday (Jan. 17), dozens of traditional fishing boats looked to line and anchored in the mooring pond. In the meantime, the activities in the area of fish weighing site (TPI) looked empty of people passing by. “Commonly, it is crowded here. Fish porters and fish transporting truck drivers rely on their life here. Fish famine has occurred since the past few months,” explained Abidin, a crew of traditional fishing boat on last Tuesday. According to him, this condition is also experienced by Muncar Harbor, Banyuwangi, having the same characteristics as Pengambengan. Currently fishermen are rarely going to sea. They prefer to moor their boat. “Even though going to sea, the operating cost is not comparable to the catches,” said Abidin. The condition is taken advantage by the owners of fishing boat to repair their engines and nets or clean up their boats.
Fishermen hoped this fish famine is soon over and the catch can be back to normal. Other than fishermen, fish factory, harbor and surrounding merchants also depend on their income on the sector. Headman of Pengambengan, Samsul Anam, confirmed the condition of fish famine on Tuesday. Majority of local resident having profession as fishermen is now experiencing anxiety due to loneliness of fish catch. Indeed, the fishermen have been familiar with fish famine, but today it takes a long time up to eight months. “Normally, it only lasts about three months. Last year the famine lasted long enough and remains until these days,” he explained. From his observation, many fishermen are unemployed and shift to work on mainland. Some are working at building construction, while others are fishing by traditional or fiber boat. Although they get small number of fish catch or particular fish, at least they can cover the necessities of daily life. Village hoped such conditions will change soon, so that the economy of the maritime sector could be back to normal again. He also hoped there will be fishermen cooperative that can accommodate the needs of fishermen when they face fish famine as it occurs today. (kmb26)
OJK emphasizes to act lawfully problems complained by consumers to YLPK such as the forcible withdrawal of costumers’ vehicle by debt collector. There is even a withdrawal of costumers’ car by using a tow truck by force. “Pursuant to complaints of costumers, their vehicle is directly executed when they pay late for two or three times. This execution by finance company does not comply with the procedures,” he said. According to him, if costumers’ vehicle is taken over forcibly by debt collector on highway it can be categorized into theft and if taken at home also constitutes a theft. “I do not blame on the actions of the
debt collector, but I would blame on the finance company that does not comply with the law,” said Armaya. Actually, if costumers are negligent and pay late, the finance may take costumers’ vehicle as long as it is in accordance with applicable laws. “Do not just see the mistake because costumers pay late, but the finance should also comply with the rules,” he added. On the other hand, the Head of the Financial Services Authority (OJK) for Regional VIII of BaliNusra, Zulmi, stated there are rules that must be followed by financing providers where communication
with debtors or customers is necessary to avoid misunderstanding. “Debtor must also be open and communicate to finance company if there are obstacles. If this has been done then misunderstandings that results in the withdrawal of vehicle can be avoided,” he said. He continued that both parties should be open. “Withdrawal will not happen if the payment runs smoothly,” he added. OJK is said to constantly remind so that any action taken must be according to the rules. Leasing company must register any credit transaction before a notary on the fiduciary agreement.

Indonesian police question Islamist leader as authorities warn over extremism
JAKARTA - Indonesian police on Wednesday said they were investigating whether the controversial leader of a hardline Islamist group insulted the country’s secular state ideology, as concern grows over the clout of fundamentalist groups. National police chief Tito Karnavian has warned against creeping Islamic extremism in the country of 250 million, home to dozens of religious and ethnic groups, and where the vast majority of citizens practice a moderate form of Islam. Police are questioning Habib Rizieq, head of the hardline Islamic Defenders Front (FPI), a key organiser of recent rallies by hundreds of thousands of Muslims against Jakarta’s governor, an ethnic
