Britain’s Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to marry on May 19 LONDON - Britain’s Prince Harry and his American fiancée, Meghan Markle, will marry on Saturday May 19, his office Kensington Palace said on Friday. Queen Elizabeth’s grandson, fifthin-line to the throne, and Markle, who stars in the U.S. TV legal drama “Suits”, announced their engagement last month with the marriage to take place in St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle. “His Royal Highness Prince Henry of Wales and Ms. Meghan Markle will marry on 19th May 2018,” Kensington Palace said in a statement. The couple said they had chosen to marry in Windsor, west of London, because it was “a special place for them”, having spent time there regularly since they met in July 2016 after being introduced through a mutual friend. Harry’s 91-year-old grandmother, Elizabeth, will attend the ceremony. However, the date they have chosen clashes with English soccer’s FA Cup Final which is usually attended by Harry’s elder brother Prince William who, as President of the Football Association, awards the trophy to the winners. “The couple of course want the day to be a special, celebratory moment for their friends and family,” Harry’s

Communications Secretary Jason Knauf said last month. “They also want the day to be shaped so as to allow members of the public to feel part of the celebrations too and are currently working through ideas for how this might be achieved.” The wedding is likely to attract huge attention across the world, as did the marriage of William to his wife Kate in 2011 which was watched by an estimated two billion people. The royal family have said they will pay for the core aspects of the wedding, such as the church service and reception. Markle, 36, who attended a Catholic school as a child but identifies as a Protestant, will be baptised and confirmed into the Church of England before the wedding. She intends to become a British citizen, though she will retain her U.S. citizenship while she goes through the process. The Gothic St George’s Chapel is located in the grounds of Windsor Castle, which has been the family home of British kings and queens for almost 1,000 years. ‘The Last Jedi’ cruises toward $200 million domestic debut

LOS ANGELES - “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” the new film in the beloved space saga, opened with massive ticket sales that put it on track to ring up around $200 million at domestic theaters over the weekend, distributor Walt Disney Co said on Friday. The movie brought in $45 million in the United States and Canada on Thursday night, second only to the $57 million from 2015’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” That film went on to generate more than $2 billion worldwide. “Last Jedi” is the eighth movie in the saga created by George Lucas in 1977. Water overflows

Motorcycle dragged, Singaraja-Bedugul hit by traffic jam

SINGARAJA - Severe traffic congestion occurred in the Singaraja - Bedugul road section on the border of Pancasari village and Wanagiri village, Sukasada, on Saturday (Dec. 16) after a sewer overflowed onto the road. At least one motorcycle was swept up by the large amount of water flowing onto the road.

According to information compiled onsite, heavy rains fell between 14:00 to 15:00 in the area of Pancasari village. The sewers located at KM 22 of Singaraja-Bedugul were unable to accommodate the large amount of water that flowed downward onto the road. Traffic was temporarily disrupted as motorbikes and cars were unable to drive through the deep water. Several trucks and buses were however able to roll through the water. Many motorcylists parked on the side of the road waiting for the water to clear, but one parked motorcycle was dragged by the stream of water. Luckily the motorcycle was intercepted by local residetns and brought to a safer location. Headman of Wanagiri, Wayan Gumiasa, explained that based on reports form this staff, depite the presecne of sewers located along this road that passes through

a protected foret the extremly heavy rainfall caused a flood along the road as the sewer could not drain all the water towards the reservoir in Lake Bunyan. Luckily the rain subsided after just one hour so the water started to receed allowing vehicles to continue on their way. The road however remained filled with gravel transported by the flooding water. “The sewers normally workd well, however dye to the extremly hevy rainfall, they overflowed onto the road. The flood did cause a traffic jam but now conditons are back to normal with a bit of debris left on the road”, he explained. Chief Executive of Buleleng Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Made Subur, said that after receiving the reports on the incident, he deployed personnel of the disaster alert post. After the rain stopped, the officers cleared the gravels from the asphalt of the road so that it would not endanger road users. “We have handled it and since the water is in large volume from the end of the sewer at Wanagiri village, it flowed downward and overflowed. Unavoidably, the road turned into a river and caused congestion. We have deployed personnel and the traffic has returned to normal,” he said. (kmb28)

MANGUPURA - The Bali chapter of the Indonesian Food and Beverage Executive Association (IFBEC) hosted the Waiter Fun Run on Saturday afternoon (Dec.16) at Kuta Beach. The event attracted 1,000 participants with cash prizes for first, second and third place winners. Chairman of the Fun Ron Committee, Bolly Kusdiana, explianed that this is the first year that this uniwue event has taken place. said the fun run held for the first time has become a unique event as the participants put on Balinese medium traditional attires. “Dressed in traditional Balinese casual attire, the participants have to run carrying a tray with a bottle of water. Whoever reaches the finish line first without spilling any waterwins”, explained Bolly. MURI (Indonesian record breaking association) was invited to the event that was organized to attract tourists to Bali and to show the world that it is perfectly safe to visit Bali. “We want to prove that conditions in Bali are safe for visitors and that eh impact of the erup-

tion of Moutn Agung only affects areas within 10 km of the crater of themountain”, he said. NEGARA - Garbage has become an alarming issue as the rainy season causes garbage to become scattered everywhere including along the bridge and in the rivers and coasts of Jembrana. Ketapang Beach has become covered in both garbage and marine debris in Ketapang Lampu hamlet, Pengambengan, Negara. Apparently, residents throw garbage carelessly on the roadside and beach area, complained . hamlet chief of Ketapang Lampu, Pengambengan, Kamaruzaman, recently. During a beach clean up by volunteers, students and teachers of SDN 2 Pengambengan elementary school, non-commissioned village military officers (Babinsa) and Pengambengan village officials on Saturday (Dec. 15), Kamaruzaman said that he is often angered and saddened to the see residents of his own village throwing garbage away carelessly. “It’s quite difficult to make people aware. For example, just now when we were conducted th eclean-up many people just sat by and watched instead of joining

in. They were invited to join in this community service but many declined. As hamlet chief I try to do my job well and when the water was stagnant I even cleared the garbage out myself ”, he said. Chief Kamaruzaman has proposed to establish a landfill or put a large garbage container in the area, however there has been no assistance forthcoming yet. He said that he hopes that people in the area become aware of the need to the conditions of their environment and start disposing of their garbgae in an appropirate manner. Principal of SDN 2 Pengambengan elementary school, Anom Karyono, said tha he appreciated to the volunteers trying to educate the children in order to raise awareness about the environment. “We are ready to cooperate if there is garbage that needs to be clean up especially in Pengambengan area. CALIFORNIA - Southern California’s Getty Center, one of the world’s wealthiest art institutions, said it had survived a wildfire tearing through Los Angeles thanks to a disaster plan that has it ready for earthquakes as well. Fires that have chased almost 200,000 Californians from their homes covered the Getty’s hillside location in smoke this week. Perched above the busy 405 freeway, an artery of California’s traffic system, the Getty is among the

most visited U.S. museums and reopened on Friday after two days closed. The Getty’s design, and a plan developed with insurers eager to keep the valuable collection safe, helped shield from damage art including Edouard Manet’s “Spring,” for which it paid more than $65 million in 2014. More than 5,700 firefighters have battled six large wind-stoked fires and several smaller ones that erupted since Monday. More than

200,000 people have been forced to evacuate. As gray clouds swept onto the campus earlier in the week, a hightech air filtration system pushed air out of buildings, making it harder for smoke to seep inside, said Linda Somerville, assistant director of insurance and risk management for the J. Paul Getty Trust, which oversees the Getty Center and has nearly $12 billion in assets, including art. The museum has its own water

tanks and has landscaped the complex in order to keep flames at bay. “By putting all these bells and whistles in, we are able to wet down our hillsides, close intake valves and keep smoke and debris out,” Somerville said. Getty representatives meet quarterly with U.S. commercial property insurer FM Global, the Getty’s insurer, to review everything from brush on the property to sprinkler system design, Somerville said. The Getty, which opened in

1997, also works year-round at preventing potential earthquake damage, Somerville said. Art and display cases throughout the museum sit atop systems that absorb the energy of earthquake vibrations, known as base isolators. And experts who repair art and artifacts in the Getty’s conservation labs must secure the items to stable surfaces in case an earthquake hits. “Everything is latched down at all times,” Somerville said. GIANYAR — The arrangement of parking in the tourism area of Ubud has forced the Gianyar Transportation Agency have to review its parking levy targets as a number of roads that had previsouly served as a source of revenue have now been eliminated. “The new parking arrangement will come into force next year and will affect our parking income, so we will have to review our targets”, said the Head of the Gianyar Transportation Agency, I Wayan Arthana, on Wednesday (Dec. 13). Arthana explained that this year parking levies amounted to almost IDR 4 billion, from the target set of IDR 3. 4 billion set for 2017. All this time, the levy of road used as parking space in Ubud area is estimated to reach around 10 percent of the total results. “It’s about 10 percent of it, but we do not matter if the amount is lost as they utilize the central parking operated by local communities,” he explained. Arthana said that his agency has already withdrawn a number of parking officers previously levied several roads on Jalan Raya Ubud except in some areas such as Ubud Market that still prepares parking attendants to collect levies. “The market has indeed become one of the parking pockets. Next, no parking attendants will operate on Jalan Raya Ubud,” he said. When asked about the parking pockets remaining to use Jalan Raya Hanoman, Dewi Sita and Jalan Raya Monkey Forest, Ubud, starts next year the road sections will no longer be used. It also means the elimination of the levy resources from the three road section. “Gradually, the white line of parking sign on the road will also be removed because all vehicles are directed to the parking pocket,” he said.

Meanwhile, Chief of Gianyar Police Traffic Affairs, Gede Eka Putra Astawa, said that up to Wednesday police personnel along with Gianyar Transportation Agency have terminated parking service along Jalan Raya Ubud. “We have cleaned illegal parking on Jalan Raya Ubud westward to the Blanco Museum,” he said. He said that along the road has been installed with water barrier and stretched with rope. In addition, there are around 16 police personnel assigned to do surveillance with the officials of Gianyar Transportation Agency. “We hope with this effort there will be absolutely no parking violations because it is not intended for parking,” he said. Then, the areas including Jalan Raya Hanoman, Dewi Sita and Jalan Raya Monkey Forest Ubud are admitted to have not been arranged because the roads are still functioned as a parking space. “Later, we will coordinate this with Transportation Agency, whether the areas can be cleaned or not. In short, we just clean the parking violations in the prohibited areas,” he explained. He said the monitoring will continue to be done every day. Moreover, if on Thursday (Dec. 14) violation is found again, a sticker will be adhered to the vehicle. The sticker mentions five parking rules including road marking rules, traffic signaling tools, traffic movement, stopping and parking and instruction signs. Violators of this rule are punished with one month in prison and a fine of IDR 250,000. “So far, we have not ticketed them because we still consider the social and economic aspects of local community. However, in the future the ticketing will be possibly applied,” he said. (kmb35)

SEMARAPURA — Formerly, Kusamba village had many kris craftsmen who worked daily for orders made by the kings who still ruled at that time. Since the arrival of the Dutch in Klungkung, the number of kris craftsmen in Kusamba has steadily decreased. Now, this village that is famous its salt only has one kris craftsman left.

Jero Mangku Pande Ketut Mudra from Pande hamlet, Kusamba, is still active in making kris. When met at his home on Wednesday (Dec. 13), Mudra admitted that he is the only resident of Kusamba who still makes kris. This 66 year old man said that during the kingdom periode Kusamba was well-known for its many kirs makers with as many as 60 kris makers working in their respective fireplaces. At that time the kris makers were supported by the royal palace. “They also made spears and other sacred objects used in rituals>, he said. After the Dutch entered Klungkung, continued Mudra, the number of kris makers in Kusamba diminished as the Dutch prohibited local residents from making kris. “It was not allowed because the Dutch was afraid of the kris dagger. Today, added Mudra, kirs are no longer used as weapons but instead they are used as sacred objects to get closer to God. Kris are also used as accessories in wedding ceremonies and in stage performances. The kirs, said Mudra have a lot of philiosophical meaning associated with them, but not many people understand it. Assisted by two people, Mudra can produce 1-2 kris per month that he sells to both local and foregin buyers. Foreigners commonly use his kris as collection pieces. Mudra explained that he faces financial challenges and has a hard time finding laborers to help him. Kris are made using a combination of metals including that is mostly bourhg in from the Island of Java. The price of these materials has gone up recently. He added although the number of kris makers in Klungkug had decresed dramatically, Mudra says that he is optimistic that this art form will survive as people still love the products made by the artisans of Bali. THREE months have been passed by Karangasem residents in refugee camps in Klungkung district to avoid the eruption of Mount Agung. Such a life is definitely very difficult. Many stories and activities vanished at their homeland. However, behind this situation there is a ‘good’ side. Mixed together with many people, they are able to feel the beauty of living the life through togetherness (menyama braya). Approximately at 09:00 Local Time, some refugees accommodated in Swecapura Stadium look to be busy. Some take food in the kitchen on the west side. The elderly choose to sit on the porch to avoid the stinging heat of the sun. In some tents, some people look to be cuddling their toddler, while children prefer to play to kill time during their school holidays. When observed further, the presence of refugees is not just waiting for help from the government to survive. Some people are even involved as volunteers to help other refugees. Nengah Darmawan, a resident of Muncan village, Selat, for instance, has been getting involved since the beginning of his evacuation on September 22. He does not fully pay attention to his family. He also dedicates himself to help coordinate the aid distribution. “I think someone else can help the refugees. I am staying here should be also like them,” he said on Friday (Dec. 15). The activities are begun early in the morning around 07:00. His daily task is frequently to record the requests of assistance needed by refugees scattered in 42 points in three subdistricts. Complaints

are often heard when the aids are considered inadequate. However, he does not respond to them by anger. It is an attitude to learn to be patient and know the character of residents that have never been known before. “Previously, they were not known, but known today. They are like family,” said the man whose wife is a tailor. What they do is not in coercion as everything is done sincerely. He prefers to stay in evacuation and assists the officers to make data collection. Australia arrests man accused of trying to sell missile parts for N.Korea

MELBOURNE - Australian police said on Sunday they had arrested a man accused of working on the black market to sell missile components and coal on behalf of North Korea, the first charges ever brought in Australia over the sale of weapons of mass destruction. The man had been charged with two counts under an act preventing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, police said, and with another four under legislation enforcing United Nations and Australian sanctions against North Korea. The Sydney man was identified by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and other media as 59year-old Chan Han Choi, who they said had been living in Australia for more than 30 years and was of Korean descent. He was arrested in the Sydney suburb of Eastwood on Saturday and was due to face court later on Sunday, police said. He came to the attention of authorities earlier this year, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) said. “This man was a loyal agent of North Korea, who believed he was acting to serve some higher patriotic purpose,” AFP Assistant Commissioner Neil Gaughan told reporters. “This case is like nothing we

have ever seen on Australian soil,” he said. Police will allege the man tried to broker the sale of missile components, including software for the guidance systems of ballistic missiles, as well as trying to sell coal to third parties in Indonesia and Vietnam. Gaughan said the trade could have been worth “tens of millions of dollars” if successful. Cash-strapped North Korea has come under a new round of stricter United Nations sanctions this year after pressing ahead with its missile and nuclear programmes in defiance of international pressure. AMMAN - Sabih al-Masri, Jordan’s most influential businessman and the chairman of its largest lender Arab Bank, was detained in Saudi Arabia for questioning after a business trip to Riyadh, family sources and friends said on Saturday. Masri’s detention, which follows the biggest purge of the Saudi kingdom’s affluent elite in its modern history, has sent shockwaves through business circles in Jordan and the Palestinian territories, where the billionaire has major investments. A Saudi citizen of Palestinian origin, Masri was detained last Tuesday hours before he was planning to leave after he chaired meetings of companies he owns, according to the sources. He is the founder of Saudi Astra Group, which has wide interests in diversified industries ranging from agro-industry to telecommunications, construction and mining across the region. “Masri was heading to the airport and they told him to stay where you are and they picked him up,” said a source familiar with the matter who asked not to be named. He cancelled a dinner in Amman on Wednesday that he had invited board members of Arab Bank and business associates to attend on his return. The Saudi authorities did not respond to requests for comment, while Masri could not be reached for comment. His confidants had warned him not to travel to the Saudi capital after mass arrests of Saudi royals, ministers and businessmen in early November, the sources said. “He has been answering questions about his business and partners,” said a source familiar with the matter who did not elaborate nor confirm he was held. A source close to the family later said that “while Masri is currently restricted from leaving Saudi Arabia, no official charges have been filed against him.”

World trade order in a wobble as Washington snubs WTO status quo

BERLIN - The frustration of Roberto Azevedo was evident when, as director general of the World Trade Organization, he summed up the results of a three-day ministerial conference in Buenos Aires in the past week. There were simply none. The delegates of more than 160 countries from around the globe failed to reach any new agreements in the face of stinging U.S. criticism of the WTO and vetoes from other countries. At the end, they were not even able to agree on a joint communique. And a further blow could strike in the coming week when Republican U.S. lawmakers aim to pass sweeping changes to the tax code which may introduce protectionist measures critics say are at odds with WTO rules. “In retrospect, 2017 could mark the beginning of the end of the rules-based free trade order and the system unravelling,” said Andre Sapir, senior fellow at the Brussels-based think tank Bruegel. He called it a “big worry”. U.S. President Donald Trump, propelled to power by his election promise to put “America First” and protect U.S. workers against what he views as unfair trade practices from China and others, has weakened the WTO as a forum to settle disputes. In the past months, Washington has blocked the appointment of several WTO appeals judges, a move which could paralyse the body’s dispute settlement system for years to come. “The new U.S. administration does not want to work within multilateral frameworks. It wants bilateral deals,” Sapir said. As a critic, he says, “This would lead to a system in which the stronger ones outplay the smaller ones, it would be the law of the jungle.” This apparent change of course in Washington is puzzling for free trade advocates who argue that the United States for decades supported and benefitted from multilateral decision-making and rules-based arbitration enshrined in the WTO statutes. THREAT TO GROWTH For them, Trump’s protectionist rhetoric is a threat to global growth and prosperity since tariffs and other trade barriers such as import

restrictions, registration formalities or state aid for domestic suppliers push up costs for everyone. The slow dismantling of the international trade order could also hurt mid-term export prospects for European countries and Germany in particular at a time when the euro zone economy is benefitting from a surge in demand for its manufactured goods. A rebound in exports is one of the key drivers of Germany’s economic upswing as they still account for more than 40 percent of its gross domestic product. The United States is Germany’s most important single export destination after the bloc of European Union countries. But the combat lines have also become blurry. In a sign that other countries share Trump’s concerns about Chinese trade practices, the European Union and Japan joined Washington in the past week in vowing to combat market-distorting policies that fuel excess industrial capacity, including subsidies for state-owned enterprises and technology transfer requirements. Following the fruitless WTO meeting, the U.S. tax overhaul could now be another nail in the coffin of free trade. The European Union and the finance ministers of Europe’s five biggest economies have sounded an alarm over elements of the plan. In a letter sent to U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, Britain, France, Germany, Italy and Spain said that the inclusion of “certain less conventional” tax provisions would contravene WTO rules and violate double taxation treaties. In a separate letter, the European Commission warned Mnuchin the planned overhaul contained elements that risk seriously ham-

Some of the provisions would discriminate against foreign business in the United States, the Commission said, while the Federation of German Industries (BDI) - the biggest lobby group for manufacturers in Europe’s largest economy - was more blunt. “Clearly protectionist,” it said of some proposed excise taxes. What actually emerges from Washington remains unclear, but even if U.S. lawmakers decide to delete some of the disputed measures in their final bill, Trump is still wedded to a unilateral approach to trade that does not require consultations with Congress. So far, he has not fulfilled campaign threats such as withdrawing from the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) or imposing steep import tariffs on imported goods such as German and Japanese cars manufactured abroad. But Trump has ordered the U.S. Commerce Department to conduct an investigation into

whether steel imports threaten U.S. national security and whether broad import restrictions should be imposed. European allies have warned Trump that such a move could trigger a global trade war since trading partners could retaliate and impose trade barriers on certain U.S. goods that they label as a threat to their national security. Chad P. Bown, senior fellow at the Washington-based Peterson Institute for International Economics, said Trump’s approach may not end up targeting China, but will hit partners such as Canada, Germany, Japan, Mexico and South Korea - most of which have little to do with the concerns the U.S. has with China. In a research note entitled “Trump Is A New Kind of Protectionist - He Operates in Stealth Mode”, Bown warned that Trump’s version of protectionism could result in higher costs for U.S. industries that use steel and aluminium. But for Trump the drive is a matter of “America First” whether the international trade order established after World War Two gets in the way or not.(rtr)

Nigeria tariff causes car imports to fall, fuels smuggling - ports authority

LAGOS - A Nigerian tariff on car imports aimed at boosting local production has reduced the number of vehicles brought into the country this year by a quarter and fuelled smuggling from neighbouring Benin, the ports authority said. Car imports fell to 70,453 units in the first 10 months of this year, a 26.8 percent reduction on the same period of 2016, Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) figures showed. The government imposed a 70 percent tariff on imported vehicles in December 2015 as part of at-

tempts by President Muhammadu Buhari to stimulate local production. Before that, the tariff was 20 percent. The head of the NPA said the policy meant local demand for cars was not being met. “We appreciate the need for the government to have assembly and manufacturing in Nigeria but we are concerned that the capacity of the Nigerian market is beyond what is said to be assembled in Nigeria,” said Hadiza Usman, managing director of the NPA. “We have seen a lot of cars being

smuggled through neighbouring countries - mainly from Benin,” she added. Benin maintains low import tariffs compared with Nigeria, which for years been beset by chronic congestion in its ports. Vehicle imports fell to 96,222 units last year from 131,994 in 2015, according to port figures. Usman said the ports authority expected a further drop in 2018 to 67,400 units. The tariffs imposed in 2015 attracted U.S. car maker Ford , South Korea’s Kia Motors and Germany’s

Volkswagen, which announced plans the same year to set up assembly plants in Nigeria. But activity slowed soon afterwards as the economy slid into recession in 2016 due to low oil prices and a currency crisis. Although it emerged from recession in the second quarter of this year, growth is fragile and limited financing for new cars has stunted sales. Ford’s local partner said it assembled 739 units of its Ranger pickup in 2016 and this year. Its plant in Nigeria’s commercial

capital, Lagos, can assemble 5,000 cars annually. Kia Motors, which has a plant in Lagos with a 20,000 vehicle capacity, said it assembled 1,800 units this year but did not give figures for 2016. And a representative of Stallion Motors, Volkswagen’s local vehicle assembly partner, said work stopped around August due to issues related to the exchange rate and production costs. Yet their amount is uncertain depending on the tourism condition. “There are always tourists wishing to plow every day. They are mostly European tourists as well as those from other countries. Thousands flee as wildfire “beast” grows to California’s third-largest

VENTURA - A raging California wildfire powered by fierce winds grew into the thirdlargest in state history on Saturday as forced evacuations turned neighborhoods into ghost towns and ash fell in some areas like heavy snow. High winds and dry conditions were expected to remain through the weekend to power the so-called Thomas Fire in Southern California. It has destroyed more than 1,000 structures and threatened 18,000 more since erupting on Dec. 4, including homes in the wealthy enclave of Montecito just outside the coastal city of Santa Barbara. “It is a beast,” Santa Barbara County Fire Department Division Chief Martin Johnson told a news conference. “But we will kill it,” he said. Nearly 8,500 personnel using nearly 1,000 engines and 32 helicopters were battling the blaze, which was 40 percent contained on Saturday evening. It has become the seventh-most destructive in state history, officials said. A new evacuation order was issued for parts of Santa Barbara County on Saturday as high winds whipped the fire through bone-dry terrain. In Montecito, smoke billowing from nearby canyons and pushed by the high winds choked the air, hindering aircraft from dropping flame retardant, the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services said. The wildfire forced many schools to close for days, shut roads and drove hundreds of thousands from their homes. It was also responsible for poor air quality throughout Southern California. An evacuation order for the city of Ventura, which was hit hard in the first days of the fire, was lifted on Saturday morning.

Went to sleep last night about midnight and then woke up to the roar of this fire coming through about 3 a.m.” Pineda said. This year has been unprecedented for California in terms of structures lost and the size of the wildfires, officials said. Five of 20 most destructive fires in recorded history ravaged the state in 2017, according to Cal Fire. The vast landscape charred by the blaze, centered fewer than 100 miles (160 km) northwest of downtown Los Angeles, reached 267,500 acres (108,253 hectares) late on Saturday. Canadian police probe mysterious deaths of billionaire pharma couple

TORONTO - Canadian police are investigating the mysterious deaths of pharmaceuticals billionaire Barry Sherman, founder of Apotex Inc, and his wife Honey, whose bodies were found in their Toronto mansion on Friday. Authorities were conducting postmortem examinations on Saturday and treating the deaths as suspicious. A Toronto Police spokesman said that nothing had been ruled out in the probe. Two Canadian newspapers reported that police were investigating the deaths as a possible murder-suicide, citing unidentified police sources. The bodies were found hanging from a railing on the edge of a basement swimming pool, the Globe and Mail and Toronto Sun reported, citing police sources. The newspapers reported that investigators were working on the theory that Barry Sherman, 75, killed his wife, hung her body and then hanged himself at the pool’s edge. Apotex released a statement Saturday saying that the Sherman family was disturbed by the reports. “We are shocked and think it’s irresponsible that police sources have reportedly advised the media of a theory which neither their family, their friends nor their colleagues believe to be true,” said the statement, which was attributed to the family of Barry and Honey Sherman. “We urge the Toronto Police Service to conduct a thorough, intensive and objective criminal investigation, and urge the media to refrain from further reporting as to the cause of these tragic deaths until the investigation is completed,” it said. Toronto Police Constable David Hopkinson said police are awaiting post-mortem results and no determinations have been made as to the cause

The deaths shocked Canada’s political, business and philanthropic elite, prompting a flood of condolences from business leaders and politicians including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Barry Sherman was a prominent donor to Canada’s ruling Liberal Party, drawing on a fortune that Forbes estimated at $3.2 billion. Canadian advocacy group Democracy Watch criticized him last year for involvement in a fundraiser for the Liberals while registered as a government lobbyist. Sherman founded generic drugmaker Apotex in 1974, building it into one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical makers. It has annual sales of more than C$2 billion in more than 45 countries, according to its website. He stepped down as CEO in 2012, but stayed on as chairman. Sherman was involved in a series of lawsuits, including a decade-long battle with cousins seeking compensation over allegations he cut them out of the company that would make him rich. Police found out about the Shermans’ deaths at about midday Friday while responding to an emergency call. Authorities have not said who made the call, though Canadian media reported the couple’s bodies were found by a real estate agent helping them sell their home, which was on the market for C$6.9 million ($5.4 million). JAKARTA - The 6.9-magnitude earthquake that struck the southern Java region on Friday night, killing at least two people and destroying scores of buildings, was triggered by the collision of the Indo-Australian and Eurasian plates, officials said. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said the earthquake that occurred at 11:47 p.m. on Friday night was caused by subduction zone activity resulting from the collision of the Indo-Australian Plate with the Eurasian Plate in the South Java area. “Based on its position and depth, the earthquake occurred due to the activity of the subduction zone formed by the collision or subduction of the Indo-Australian Plate against the Eurasian Plate in the southern Java area,” said Head of BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center Mochammad Riyadi in a statement received in Jakarta on Saturday. The epicenter was located at 8.03 degrees southern latitude and 108.04 degrees eastern longitude at a depth of 105 kilometers. In its revised data, the BMKG noted that the quake`s magnitude was recorded at 6.9 on the Richter scale at 7.75 degrees southern latitude and 108.11 degrees eastern longitude at a depth of 107 kilometers. The earthquake was centered at 42 kilometers southwest of Kawalu, West Java. This earthquake could trigger a tsunami in southern West Java, Central Java, and Yogyakarta. From the recordings of tide gauge stations close to the epicenter, there was no recorded sea level rise. To that end, BMKG ended its tsunami early warning at 02:26 p.m. Further, from its monitoring results up to 02:14 a.m. on Saturday, BMKG noted that three rounds of aftershocks had occurred, with a magnitude of 3.2, 3.4, and 3.2. Based on the results of shock-level analysis (shakemap), the intensity of the earthquakes was potentially felt around Tasikmalaya, Bandung, Kebumen, Karangkates, Yogyakarta, Jakarta, Depok, Ngawi, Madiun, Nganjuk, and Mataram. “People are encouraged to stay calm and follow local disaster mitigation agencies` (BPBD`s) directives and BMKG`s information, so they will not be fooled by irresponsible reporting on the earthquake and tsunami, while remaining alert to the occurrence of aftershocks whose magnitude is generally decreasing,” he stated. Meanwhile, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said two people died in the Friday night

earthquake. Head of Information and Public Relations Center of BNPB Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, in his short message in Jakarta on Saturday, said the two people who died are Dede Lutfi, 62, a Gunungsahari Village resident in Ciamis District, West Java, and Aminah, 80, a resident of Sugihwaras, Pekalongan, Central Java. “Both victims died after being buried under a wall that collapsed during the earthquake,” stated Sutopo. In addition to the death toll, the BNPB report also mentioned that the earthquake had caused seven people to be injured, while 43 homes were destroyed, 65 houses were modestly damaged, 10 others were slightly damaged, and some public buildings suffered damage. The impact of the earthquake in West Java caused one fatality, severe damage to 17 houses, moderate damage to 59 houses, and slight damage to 10 houses. In Central Java, one person died, one person was seriously injured, 26 houses were severely damaged and collapsed, and six houses were damaged. Areas affected by the earthquake and suffering damage include Pangandaran, Tasikmalaya, Ciamis, Banjar, Garut, Cilacap, Kebumen, Pekalongan, Banyumas, Brebes, and Banjarnegara. Since the epicenter is located six kilometers southeast of Bantarkalong City, Tasikmalaya District, the areas that experienced damage and were hit hard by aftershocks are in the Tasikmalaya, Pangandaran, and Ciamis districts in West Java Province. Some hospitals were damaged, so patients were taken outdoors. For example, Banyumas Hospital suffered damage to the ceiling, cracked walls, and leakage of the installed oxygen gas pipeline. Sutopo claimed that most of the people who had been evacuated during the tsunami early warning have been allowed to return home. “There is no tsunami due along the south coast of Java. Aftershocks have occurred as many as seven times at low magnitude. There has been no impact or damage from the aftershocks, and public activity has returned to normal,” explained Sutopo. Thousands of people in Central Java`s Cilacap District reportedly fled their homes after the earthquake hit the southern coastal areas of Java. MILAN - Inter Milan suffered an unexpected first league defeat of the season on Saturday, going down 3-1 at home to midtable Udinese, and were knocked off the top of Serie A by Napoli after they won by the same score at Torino. In the day’s other game, AS Roma missed a second-half penalty but still beat Cagliari 1-0 with a stoppagetime goal by Federico Fazio, awarded after a consultation with the video assistant referee (VAR).

VAR was also used at the San Siro to award a secondhalf penalty to Udinese which Rodrigo De Paul converted in what proved to be the turning point as Inter were finally beaten in their 17th game of the campaign. The referee initially signalled a goal kick but changed his mind and gave handball against Davide Santon after consulting the VAR. Inter’s defeat opened the door for Napoli to move back to the top of Serie A with 42 points from 17 games, two clear of Inter. Roma’s win took them level on 38 points with third-placed Juventus, who visit Bologna on Sunday. Thousands flee as wildfire “beast” grows to California’s third-largest

VENTURA - A raging California wildfire powered by fierce winds grew into the thirdlargest in state history on Saturday as forced evacuations turned neighborhoods into ghost towns and ash fell in some areas like heavy snow. High winds and dry conditions were expected to remain through the weekend to power the so-called Thomas Fire in Southern California. It has destroyed more than 1,000 structures and threatened 18,000 more since erupting on Dec. 4, including homes in the wealthy enclave of Montecito just outside the coastal city of Santa Barbara. “It is a beast,” Santa Barbara County Fire Department Division Chief Martin Johnson told a news conference. “But we will kill it,” he said. Nearly 8,500 personnel using nearly 1,000 engines and 32 helicopters were battling the blaze, which was 40 percent contained on Saturday evening. It has become the seventh-most destructive in state history, officials said. A new evacuation order was issued for parts of Santa Barbara County on Saturday as high winds whipped the fire through bone-dry terrain. In Montecito, smoke billowing from nearby canyons and pushed by the high winds choked the air, hindering aircraft from dropping flame retardant, the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services said. The wildfire forced many schools to close for days, shut roads and drove hundreds of thousands from their homes. It was also responsible for poor air quality throughout Southern California. An evacuation order for the city of Ventura, which was hit hard in the first days of the fire, was lifted on Saturday morning.

“Our backyard, it’s like a rain of ash. I don’t even want to step back there,” said Janet Harrington, 56, an artist and writer who grew up and lives in Ventura. Her son Ryan said: “I can count 10 people who lost their homes. The 13 days of shifting winds and evacuations have taken their toll on a weary population. Paul Pineda, who lives in Fillmore, about 55 miles (90 km)northwest of Los Angeles and on the eastern flank of the fire, said he will flee if the blaze gets too close. “It’s pretty crazy. Went to sleep last night about midnight and then woke up to the roar of this fire coming through about 3 a.m.” Pineda said. This year has been unprecedented for California in terms of structures lost and the size of the wildfires, officials said. Five of 20 most destructive fires in recorded history ravaged the state in 2017, according to Cal Fire. The vast landscape charred by the blaze, centered fewer than 100 miles (160 km) northwest of downtown Los Angeles, reached 267,500 acres (108,253 hectares) late on Saturday. The largest wildfire in state history was the 2003 Cedar blaze in San Diego County that consumed 273,246 acres and caused 15 deaths. The hot Santa Ana winds have propelled the fire’s expansion, at times sending embers far ahead of its main flank. They were forecast to gust at up to 50 mph (80 kph) on Sunday with critical fire conditions remaining through Monday, National Weather Service forecasters said. (rtr)

Canadian police probe mysterious deaths of billionaire pharma couple

TORONTO - Canadian police are investigating the mysterious deaths of pharmaceuticals billionaire Barry Sherman, founder of Apotex Inc, and his wife Honey, whose bodies were found in their Toronto mansion on Friday. Authorities were conducting postmortem examinations on Saturday and treating the deaths as suspicious. A Toronto Police spokesman said that nothing had been ruled out in the probe. Two Canadian newspapers reported that police were investigating the deaths as a possible murder-suicide, citing unidentified police sources. The bodies were found hanging from a railing on the edge of a basement swimming pool, the Globe and Mail and Toronto Sun reported, citing police sources. The newspapers reported that investigators were working on the theory that Barry Sherman, 75, killed his wife, hung her body and then hanged himself at the pool’s edge. Apotex released a statement Saturday saying that the Sherman family was disturbed by the reports. “We are shocked and think it’s irresponsible that police sources have reportedly advised the media of a theory which neither their family, their friends nor their colleagues believe to be true,” said the statement, which was attributed to the family of Barry and Honey Sherman. “We urge the Toronto Police Service to conduct a thorough, intensive and objective criminal investigation, and urge the media to refrain from further reporting as to the cause of these tragic deaths until the investigation is completed,” it said. Toronto Police Constable David Hopkinson said police are awaiting post-mortem results and no determinations have been made as to the cause

and manner of deaths. “There’s a whole bunch of different scenarios here. We are not ruling anything out,” he said. About a dozen police officers canvassed neighbors for information on the case Saturday while a forensics photographer took pictures of the snow-covered estate. CANADIAN REACTION

The deaths shocked Canada’s political, business and philanthropic elite, prompting a flood of condolences from business leaders and politicians including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Barry Sherman was a prominent donor to Canada’s ruling Liberal Party, drawing on a fortune that Forbes estimated at $3.2 billion. Canadian advocacy group Democracy Watch criticized him last year for involvement in a fundraiser for the Liberals while registered as a government lobbyist. Sherman founded generic drugmaker Apotex in 1974, building it into one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical makers. It has annual sales of more than C$2 billion in more than 45 countries, according to its website. He stepped down as CEO in 2012, but stayed on as chairman. Sherman was involved in a series of lawsuits, including a decade-long battle with cousins seeking compensation over allegations he cut them out of the company that would make him rich. Police found out about the Shermans’ deaths at about midday Friday while responding to an emergency call. Authorities have not said who made the call, though Canadian media reported the couple’s bodies were found by a real estate agent helping them sell their home, which was on the market for C$6.9 million ($5.4 million). JAKARTA - The 6.9-magnitude earthquake that struck the southern Java region on Friday night, killing at least two people and destroying scores of buildings, was triggered by the collision of the Indo-Australian and Eurasian plates, officials said. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said the earthquake that occurred at 11:47 p.m. on Friday night was caused by subduction zone activity resulting from the collision of the Indo-Australian Plate with the Eurasian Plate in the South Java area. “Based on its position and depth, the earthquake occurred due to the activity of the subduction zone formed by the collision or subduction of the Indo-Australian Plate against the Eurasian Plate in the southern Java area,” said Head of BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center Mochammad Riyadi in a statement received in Jakarta on Saturday. The epicenter was located at 8.03 degrees southern latitude and 108.04 degrees eastern longitude at a depth of 105 kilometers. In its revised data, the BMKG noted that the quake`s magnitude was recorded at 6.9 on the Richter scale at 7.75 degrees southern latitude and 108.11 degrees eastern longitude at a depth of 107 kilometers. The earthquake was centered at 42 kilometers southwest of Kawalu, West Java. This earthquake could trigger a tsunami in southern West Java, Central Java, and Yogyakarta. From the recordings of tide gauge stations close to the epicenter, there was no recorded sea level rise. To that end, BMKG ended its tsunami early warning at 02:26 p.m. Further, from its monitoring results up to 02:14 a.m. on Saturday, BMKG noted that three rounds of aftershocks had occurred, with a magnitude of 3.2, 3.4, and 3.2. Based on the results of shock-level analysis (shakemap), the intensity of the earthquakes was potentially felt around Tasikmalaya, Bandung, Kebumen, Karangkates, Yogyakarta, Jakarta, Depok, Ngawi, Madiun, Nganjuk, and Mataram. “People are encouraged to stay calm and follow local disaster mitigation agencies` (BPBD`s) directives and BMKG`s information, so they will not be fooled by irresponsible reporting on the earthquake and tsunami, while remaining alert to the occurrence of aftershocks whose magnitude is generally decreasing,” he stated. Meanwhile, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said two people died in the Friday night

earthquake. Head of Information and Public Relations Center of BNPB Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, in his short message in Jakarta on Saturday, said the two people who died are Dede Lutfi, 62, a Gunungsahari Village resident in Ciamis District, West Java, and Aminah, 80, a resident of Sugihwaras, Pekalongan, Central Java. “Both victims died after being buried under a wall that collapsed during the earthquake,” stated Sutopo. In addition to the death toll, the BNPB report also mentioned that the earthquake had caused seven people to be injured, while 43 homes were destroyed, 65 houses were modestly damaged, 10 others were slightly damaged, and some public buildings suffered damage. The impact of the earthquake in West Java caused one fatality, severe damage to 17 houses, moderate damage to 59 houses, and slight damage to 10 houses. In Central Java, one person died, one person was seriously injured, 26 houses were severely damaged and collapsed, and six houses were damaged. Areas affected by the earthquake and suffering damage include Pangandaran, Tasikmalaya, Ciamis, Banjar, Garut, Cilacap, Kebumen, Pekalongan, Banyumas, Brebes, and Banjarnegara. Since the epicenter is located six kilometers southeast of Bantarkalong City, Tasikmalaya District, the areas that experienced damage and were hit hard by aftershocks are in the Tasikmalaya, Pangandaran, and Ciamis districts in West Java Province. Some hospitals were damaged, so patients were taken outdoors. For example, Banyumas Hospital suffered damage to the ceiling, cracked walls, and leakage of the installed oxygen gas pipeline. Sutopo claimed that most of the people who had been evacuated during the tsunami early warning have been allowed to return home. “There is no tsunami due along the south coast of Java. Aftershocks have occurred as many as seven times at low magnitude. There has been no impact or damage from the aftershocks, and public activity has returned to normal,” explained Sutopo. Thousands of people in Central Java`s Cilacap District reportedly fled their homes after the earthquake hit the southern coastal areas of Java. Tens of thousands of Indonesians rally over Trump’s Jerusalem stance

JAKARTA - Tens of thousands of Muslims marched from the main mosque in Indonesia’s capital to a square in Jakarta on Sunday to protest against U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. It was the biggest protest in Indonesia since Trump’s controversial move earlier this month to reverse decades of U.S. policy. Police estimated the number attending the rally, organised by various Muslim groups, at about 80,000. The protest was peaceful but rows of police behind coils of barbed wire held back the crowd outside the U.S. embassy in Jakarta. A police spokesman said 20,000 police and members of the military were deployed to ensure security. “We urge all countries to reject the unilateral and illegal decision of President Donald Trump to make

Jerusalem Israel’s capital,” Anwar Abbas, the secretary general of the Indonesian Ulema Council, told the crowd. “We call on all Indonesian people to boycott U.S. and Israel products in this country” if Trump does not revoked his action, Abbas said, reading from a petition due to be handed to the U.S. ambassador in Indonesia. Many of the protesters were clad in white and waved Palestinian flags and held up placards, some reading: “Peace, love and free Palestine”. There have been a series of protests in Indonesia over the issue, including some where hardliners burned U.S. and Israeli flags. The status of Jerusalem, a city holy to Jews, Muslims and Christians, is one of the biggest barriers to a lasting Israeli-Palestinian peace. Jerusalem’s eastern sector was captured by Israel in a 1967 war and annexed in a move not recognised internationally. World trade order in a wobble as Washington snubs WTO status quo

BERLIN - The frustration of Roberto Azevedo was evident when, as director general of the World Trade Organization, he summed up the results of a three-day ministerial conference in Buenos Aires in the past week. There were simply none. The delegates of more than 160 countries from around the globe failed to reach any new agreements in the face of stinging U.S. criticism of the WTO and vetoes from other countries. At the end, they were not even able to agree on a joint communique. And a further blow could strike in the coming week when Republican U.S. lawmakers aim to pass sweeping changes to the tax code which may introduce protectionist measures critics say are at odds with WTO rules. “In retrospect, 2017 could mark the beginning of the end of the rules-based free trade order and the system unravelling,” said Andre Sapir, senior fellow at the Brussels-based think tank Bruegel. He called it a “big worry”. U.S. President Donald Trump, propelled to power by his election promise to put “America First” and protect U.S. workers against what he views as unfair trade practices from China and others, has weakened the WTO as a forum to settle disputes. In the past months, Washington has blocked the appointment of several WTO appeals judges, a move which could paralyse the body’s dispute settlement system for years to come. “The new U.S. administration does not want to work within multilateral frameworks. It wants bilateral deals,” Sapir said. As a critic, he says, “This would lead to a system in which the stronger ones outplay the smaller ones, it would be the law of the jungle.” This apparent change of course in Washington is puzzling for free trade advocates who argue that the United States for decades supported and benefitted from multilateral decision-making and rules-based arbitration enshrined in the WTO statutes. THREAT TO GROWTH For them, Trump’s protectionist rhetoric is a threat to global growth and prosperity since tariffs and other trade barriers such as import

restrictions, registration formalities or state aid for domestic suppliers push up costs for everyone. The slow dismantling of the international trade order could also hurt mid-term export prospects for European countries and Germany in particular at a time when the euro zone economy is benefitting from a surge in demand for its manufactured goods. A rebound in exports is one of the key drivers of Germany’s economic upswing as they still account for more than 40 percent of its gross domestic product. The United States is Germany’s most important single export destination after the bloc of European Union countries. But the combat lines have also become blurry. In a sign that other countries share Trump’s concerns about Chinese trade practices, the European Union and Japan joined Washington in the past week in vowing to combat market-distorting policies that fuel excess industrial capacity, including subsidies for state-owned enterprises and technology transfer requirements. Following the fruitless WTO meeting, the U.S. tax overhaul could now be another nail in the coffin of free trade. The European Union and the finance ministers of Europe’s five biggest economies have sounded an alarm over elements of the plan. In a letter sent to U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, Britain, France, Germany, Italy and Spain said that the inclusion of “certain less conventional” tax provisions would contravene WTO rules and violate double taxation treaties. In a separate letter, the European Commission warned Mnuchin the planned overhaul contained elements that risk seriously ham-

whether steel imports threaten U.S. national security and whether broad import restrictions should be imposed. European allies have warned Trump that such a move could trigger a global trade war since trading partners could retaliate and impose trade barriers on certain U.S. goods that they label as a threat to their national security. Chad P. Bown, senior fellow at the Washington-based Peterson Institute for International Economics, said Trump’s approach may not end up targeting China, but will hit partners such as Canada, Germany, Japan, Mexico and South Korea - most of which have little to do with the concerns the U.S. has with China. In a research note entitled “Trump Is A New Kind of Protectionist - He Operates in Stealth Mode”, Bown warned that Trump’s version of protectionism could result in higher costs for U.S. industries that use steel and aluminium. But for Trump the drive is a matter of “America First” whether the international trade order established after World War Two gets in the way or not.(rtr)

LAGOS - A Nigerian tariff on car imports aimed at boosting local production has reduced the number of vehicles brought into the country this year by a quarter and fuelled smuggling from neighbouring Benin, the ports authority said. Car imports fell to 70,453 units in the first 10 months of this year, a 26.8 percent reduction on the same period of 2016, Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) figures showed. The government imposed a 70 percent tariff on imported vehicles in December 2015 as part of at-

tempts by President Muhammadu Buhari to stimulate local production. Before that, the tariff was 20 percent. The head of the NPA said the policy meant local demand for cars was not being met. “We appreciate the need for the government to have assembly and manufacturing in Nigeria but we are concerned that the capacity of the Nigerian market is beyond what is said to be assembled in Nigeria,” said Hadiza Usman, managing director of the NPA. “We have seen a lot of cars being

smuggled through neighbouring countries - mainly from Benin,” she added. Benin maintains low import tariffs compared with Nigeria, which for years been beset by chronic congestion in its ports. Vehicle imports fell to 96,222 units last year from 131,994 in 2015, according to port figures. Usman said the ports authority expected a further drop in 2018 to 67,400 units. The tariffs imposed in 2015 attracted U.S. car maker Ford , South Korea’s Kia Motors and Germany’s

Volkswagen, which announced plans the same year to set up assembly plants in Nigeria. But activity slowed soon afterwards as the economy slid into recession in 2016 due to low oil prices and a currency crisis. Although it emerged from recession in the second quarter of this year, growth is fragile and limited financing for new cars has stunted sales. Ford’s local partner said it assembled 739 units of its Ranger pickup in 2016 and this year. Its plant in Nigeria’s commercial

capital, Lagos, can assemble 5,000 cars annually. Kia Motors, which has a plant in Lagos with a 20,000 vehicle capacity, said it assembled 1,800 units this year but did not give figures for 2016. And a representative of Stallion Motors, Volkswagen’s local vehicle assembly partner, said work stopped around August due to issues related to the exchange rate and production costs. the track. In mid-track, the cows stop based on the order of Ni Putu Supasti. Tourists are given the opportunity to capture the moment with their camera. With her husband I Made Suparta (Mr. Risa), she has a specialty to turn tourists into a farmer of her own way. After plowing, tourists are invited to start transplanting paddy traditionally. They are introduced how to the process making paddy grain into rice. Similarly, they are invited to catch fish in small pond, climbing coconut trees and picking fruits in paddy field.

Ultimately, tourists are taken to visit organic ornamental plants and Rumah Desa, a community activity of ancient Bali, such as ngelawar (preparing Balinese cuisine) and others. According to Supasti, in a day there are always tourists taking the plowing activity. Yet their amount is uncertain depending on the tourism condition. “There are always tourists wishing to plow every day. They are mostly European tourists as well as those from other countries. THREE months have been passed by Karangasem residents in refugee camps in Klungkung district to avoid the eruption of Mount Agung. Such a life is definitely very difficult. Many stories and activities vanished at their homeland. However, behind this situation there is a ‘good’ side. Mixed together with many people, they are able to feel the beauty of living the life through togetherness (menyama braya). Approximately at 09:00 Local Time, some refugees accommodated in Swecapura Stadium look to be busy. Some take food in the kitchen on the west side. The elderly choose to sit on the porch to avoid the stinging heat of the sun. In some tents, some people look to be cuddling their toddler, while children prefer to play to kill time during their school holidays. When observed further, the presence of refugees is not just waiting for help from the government to survive. Some people are even involved as volunteers to help other refugees. Nengah Darmawan, a resident of Muncan village, Selat, for instance, has been getting involved since the beginning of his evacuation on September 22. He does not fully pay attention to his family. He also dedicates himself to help coordinate the aid distribution. “I think someone else can help the refugees. I am staying here should be also like them,” he said on Friday (Dec. 15). The activities are begun early in the morning around 07:00. His daily task is frequently to record the requests of assistance needed by refugees scattered in 42 points in three subdistricts. Complaints

are often heard when the aids are considered inadequate. However, he does not respond to them by anger. It is an attitude to learn to be patient and know the character of residents that have never been known before. “Previously, they were not known, but known today. They are like family,” said the man whose wife is a tailor. What they do is not in coercion as everything is done sincerely. He also experiences the life in refugee camp, being far from birthplace but not entirely bitter. Instead, from this condition he can get a story how important the life in togetherness is. It is an attitude that currently seems to fade away. “Here, our togetherness is increasingly further. It is the positive thing,” he said. When the alert level of Mount Agung was decreased from warning to watch, many refugees from the same village returned to their home. They want to open a new phase of life. However, he is different. He prefers to stay in evacuation and assists the officers to make data collection. Australia arrests man accused of trying to sell missile parts for N.Korea

MELBOURNE - Australian police said on Sunday they had arrested a man accused of working on the black market to sell missile components and coal on behalf of North Korea, the first charges ever brought in Australia over the sale of weapons of mass destruction. The man had been charged with two counts under an act preventing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, police said, and with another four under legislation enforcing United Nations and Australian sanctions against North Korea. The Sydney man was identified by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and other media as 59year-old Chan Han Choi, who they said had been living in Australia for more than 30 years and was of Korean descent. He was arrested in the Sydney suburb of Eastwood on Saturday and was due to face court later on Sunday, police said. He came to the attention of authorities earlier this year, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) said. “This man was a loyal agent of North Korea, who believed he was acting to serve some higher patriotic purpose,” AFP Assistant Commissioner Neil Gaughan told reporters. “This case is like nothing we

have ever seen on Australian soil,” he said. Police will allege the man tried to broker the sale of missile components, including software for the guidance systems of ballistic missiles, as well as trying to sell coal to third parties in Indonesia and Vietnam. Gaughan said the trade could have been worth “tens of millions of dollars” if successful. Cash-strapped North Korea has come under a new round of stricter United Nations sanctions this year after pressing ahead with its missile and nuclear programmes in defiance of international pressure. Tensions have risen dramatically on the Korean peninsula because of the North’s ballistic missile launches and its sixth and most powerful nuclear test, as well as joint military drills between South Korea and the United States that the North describes as preparation for war. AMMAN - Sabih al-Masri, Jordan’s most influential businessman and the chairman of its largest lender Arab Bank, was detained in Saudi Arabia for questioning after a business trip to Riyadh, family sources and friends said on Saturday. Masri’s detention, which follows the biggest purge of the Saudi kingdom’s affluent elite in its modern history, has sent shockwaves through business circles in Jordan and the Palestinian territories, where the billionaire has major investments. A Saudi citizen of Palestinian origin, Masri was detained last Tuesday hours before he was planning to leave after he chaired meetings of companies he owns, according to the sources. He is the founder of Saudi Astra Group, which has wide interests in diversified industries ranging from agro-industry to telecommunications, construction and mining across the region. “Masri was heading to the airport and they told him to stay where you are and they picked him up,” said a source familiar with the matter who asked not to be named. He cancelled a dinner in Amman on Wednesday that he had invited board members of Arab Bank and business associates to attend on his return. The Saudi authorities did not respond to requests for comment, while Masri could not be reached for comment. His confidants had warned him not to travel to the Saudi capital after mass arrests of Saudi royals, ministers and businessmen in early November, the sources said. “He has been answering questions about his business and partners,” said a source familiar with the matter who did not elaborate nor confirm he was held. A source close to the family later said that “while Masri is currently restricted from leaving Saudi Arabia, no official charges have been filed against him.”

POLITICAL MOTIVE Reasons for Masri’s detention were not clear but political sources said the Saudis might have used him to put pressure on Jordan’s King Abdullah not to attend a Muslim summit last week to discuss U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. And experts who repair art and artifacts in the Getty’s conservation labs must secure the items to stable surfaces in case an earthquake hits. “Everything is latched down at all times,” Somerville said. GIANYAR — The arrangement of parking in the tourism area of Ubud has forced the Gianyar Transportation Agency have to review its parking levy targets as a number of roads that had previsouly served as a source of revenue have now been eliminated. “The new parking arrangement will come into force next year and will affect our parking income, so we will have to review our targets”, said the Head of the Gianyar Transportation Agency, I Wayan Arthana, on Wednesday (Dec. 13). Arthana explained that this year parking levies amounted to almost IDR 4 billion, from the target set of IDR 3. 4 billion set for 2017. All this time, the levy of road used as parking space in Ubud area is estimated to reach around 10 percent of the total results. “It’s about 10 percent of it, but we do not matter if the amount is lost as they utilize the central parking operated by local communities,” he explained. Arthana said that his agency has already withdrawn a number of parking officers previously levied several roads on Jalan Raya Ubud except in some areas such as Ubud Market that still prepares parking attendants to collect levies. “The market has indeed become one of the parking pockets. Next, no parking attendants will operate on Jalan Raya Ubud,” he said. When asked about the parking pockets remaining to use Jalan Raya Hanoman, Dewi Sita and Jalan Raya Monkey Forest, Ubud, starts next year the road sections will no longer be used. It also means the elimination of the levy resources from the three road section. “Gradually, the white line of parking sign on the road will also be removed because all vehicles are directed to the parking pocket,” he said.

Meanwhile, Chief of Gianyar Police Traffic Affairs, Gede Eka Putra Astawa, said that up to Wednesday police personnel along with Gianyar Transportation Agency have terminated parking service along Jalan Raya Ubud. “We have cleaned illegal parking on Jalan Raya Ubud westward to the Blanco Museum,” he said. He said that along the road has been installed with water barrier and stretched with rope. In addition, there are around 16 police personnel assigned to do surveillance with the officials of Gianyar Transportation Agency. “We hope with this effort there will be absolutely no parking violations because it is not intended for parking,” he said. Then, the areas including Jalan Raya Hanoman, Dewi Sita and Jalan Raya Monkey Forest Ubud are admitted to have not been arranged because the roads are still functioned as a parking space. “Later, we will coordinate this with Transportation Agency, whether the areas can be cleaned or not. In short, we just clean the parking violations in the prohibited areas,” he explained. He said the monitoring will continue to be done every day. Moreover, if on Thursday (Dec. 14) violation is found again, a sticker will be adhered to the vehicle. The sticker mentions five parking rules including road marking rules, traffic signaling tools, traffic movement, stopping and parking and instruction signs. Violators of this rule are punished with one month in prison and a fine of IDR 250,000. “So far, we have not ticketed them because we still consider the social and economic aspects of local community. However, in the future the ticketing will be possibly applied,” he said. (kmb35)

SEMARAPURA — Formerly, Kusamba village had many kris craftsmen who worked daily for orders made by the kings who still ruled at that time. Since the arrival of the Dutch in Klungkung, the number of kris craftsmen in Kusamba has steadily decreased. Now, this village that is famous its salt only has one kris craftsman left.

Jero Mangku Pande Ketut Mudra from Pande hamlet, Kusamba, is still active in making kris. When met at his home on Wednesday (Dec. 13), Mudra admitted that he is the only resident of Kusamba who still makes kris. This 66 year old man said that during the kingdom periode Kusamba was well-known for its many kirs makers with as many as 60 kris makers working in their respective fireplaces. At that time the kris makers were supported by the royal palace. “They also made spears and other sacred objects used in rituals>, he said. After the Dutch entered Klungkung, continued Mudra, the number of kris makers in Kusamba diminished as the Dutch prohibited local residents from making kris. “It was not allowed because the Dutch was afraid of the kris dagger. On eof theoir generals was killed with a kirs”, he said. At that time residents of Kusamba were only allowed to make kitchenware. By 1997, there were only three place in Kusamba that had metalsmiths, but the number of craftsmen has been decreasing steadily as many preffer to farm or

work as laborers. Currently, surviving craftsmen in Kusamba only existed in three locations. Their number continues to decrease. Kris craft is increasingly abandoned. Craftsmen and the successors prefer to switch professions to farmers and laborer. Currently, Jero Mangku Pande Ketut Mudra is the only active kris maker to carry on this heritage. Today, added Mudra, kirs are no longer used as weapons but instead they are used as sacred objects to get closer to God. Kris are also used as accessories in wedding ceremonies and in stage performances. The kirs, said Mudra have a lot of philiosophical meaning associated with them, but not many people understand it. Assisted by two people, Mudra can produce 1-2 kris per month that he sells to both local and foregin buyers. Foreigners commonly use his kris as collection pieces. Mudra explained that he faces financial challenges and has a hard time finding laborers to help him. Kris are made using a combination of metals including that is mostly bourhg in from the Island of Java. The price of these materials has gone up recently. He added although the number of kris makers in Klungkug had decresed dramatically, Mudra says that he is optimistic that this art form will survive as people still love the products made by the artisans of Bali. Mudra himself will pass on the expertise to his son. Pand Mudra added that he hopes that the government can help support the continuation of this heritage by marketing this rare craft. (kmb40)

Water overflows

Motorcycle dragged, Singaraja-Bedugul hit by traffic jam

SINGARAJA - Severe traffic congestion occurred in the Singaraja - Bedugul road section on the border of Pancasari village and Wanagiri village, Sukasada, on Saturday (Dec. 16) after a sewer overflowed onto the road. At least one motorcycle was swept up by the large amount of water flowing onto the road.

According to information compiled onsite, heavy rains fell between 14:00 to 15:00 in the area of Pancasari village. The sewers located at KM 22 of Singaraja-Bedugul were unable to accommodate the large amount of water that flowed downward onto the road. Traffic was temporarily disrupted as motorbikes and cars were unable to drive through the deep water. Several trucks and buses were however able to roll through the water. Many motorcylists parked on the side of the road waiting for the water to clear, but one parked motorcycle was dragged by the stream of water. Luckily the motorcycle was intercepted by local residetns and brought to a safer location. Headman of Wanagiri, Wayan Gumiasa, explained that based on reports form this staff, depite the presecne of sewers located along this road that passes through

a protected foret the extremly heavy rainfall caused a flood along the road as the sewer could not drain all the water towards the reservoir in Lake Bunyan. Luckily the rain subsided after just one hour so the water started to receed allowing vehicles to continue on their way. The road however remained filled with gravel transported by the flooding water. “The sewers normally workd well, however dye to the extremly hevy rainfall, they overflowed onto the road. The flood did cause a traffic jam but now conditons are back to normal with a bit of debris left on the road”, he explained. Chief Executive of Buleleng Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Made Subur, said that after receiving the reports on the incident, he deployed personnel of the disaster alert post. After the rain stopped, the officers cleared the gravels from the asphalt of the road so that it would not endanger road users. “We have handled it and since the water is in large volume from the end of the sewer at Wanagiri village, it flowed downward and overflowed. Unavoidably, the road turned into a river and caused congestion. We have deployed personnel and the traffic has returned to normal,” he said. (kmb28)

MANGUPURA - The Bali chapter of the Indonesian Food and Beverage Executive Association (IFBEC) hosted the Waiter Fun Run on Saturday afternoon (Dec.16) at Kuta Beach. The event attracted 1,000 participants with cash prizes for first, second and third place winners. Chairman of the Fun Ron Committee, Bolly Kusdiana, explianed that this is the first year that this uniwue event has taken place. said the fun run held for the first time has become a unique event as the participants put on Balinese medium traditional attires. “Dressed in traditional Balinese casual attire, the participants have to run carrying a tray with a bottle of water. Whoever reaches the finish line first without spilling any waterwins”, explained Bolly. MURI (Indonesian record breaking association) was invited to the event that was organized to attract tourists to Bali and to show the world that it is perfectly safe to visit Bali. “We want to prove that conditions in Bali are safe for visitors and that eh impact of the erup-

NEGARA - Garbage has become an alarming issue as the rainy season causes garbage to become scattered everywhere including along the bridge and in the rivers and coasts of Jembrana. Ketapang Beach has become covered in both garbage and marine debris in Ketapang Lampu hamlet, Pengambengan, Negara. Apparently, residents throw garbage carelessly on the roadside and beach area, complained . hamlet chief of Ketapang Lampu, Pengambengan, Kamaruzaman, recently. During a beach clean up by volunteers, students and teachers of SDN 2 Pengambengan elementary school, non-commissioned village military officers (Babinsa) and Pengambengan village officials on Saturday (Dec. 15), Kamaruzaman said that he is often angered and saddened to the see residents of his own village throwing garbage away carelessly. “It’s quite difficult to make people aware. For example, just now when we were conducted th eclean-up many people just sat by and watched instead of joining

Principal of SDN 2 Pengambengan elementary school, Anom Karyono, said tha he appreciated to the volunteers trying to educate the children in order to raise awareness about the environment. “We are ready to cooperate if there is garbage that needs to be clean up especially in Pengambengan area. Britain’s Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to marry on May 19 LONDON - Britain’s Prince Harry and his American fiancée, Meghan Markle, will marry on Saturday May 19, his office Kensington Palace said on Friday.
