Final ‘Hunger Games’ film hits big screen

LOS ANGELES - The fourth and final film in the blockbuster “Hunger Games” series -- a dystopian fantasy saga that turned Jennifer Lawrence into a Hollywood mega-star -- hits the big screen this week and is expected to catch fire at the box office. “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2” will bring to a close one of the biggest franchises in Hollywood, which has already grossed more than $2.2 billion worldwide, according to Lionsgate, the studio that produced the films. Based on a best-selling trilogy of young adult novels by Suzanne Collins, the movies tell the story of Katniss Everdeen (Lawrence), the teenage heroine pitched into a deadly battle for survival in the macabre post-apocalyptic kingdom of Panem. Lawrence -- who at 25 is already an Oscar winner and the world’s highest paid actress -- recently told reporters in Los Angeles that she found it “bizarre” to be bidding farewell to the character that catapulted her to fame. “I think it will be pretty bizarre when the movie is finally out and... everything is officially done,” said Lawrence, who took home a best actress Academy Award in 2013 for her performance in “Silver Linings Playbook.” “This movie has been my life for so many years.” “Mockingjay - Part 2” opens in several countries in Europe, Latin America, Asia and the Middle East on Wednesday, and in the United

After battling twice for her life in the “Hunger Games,” a reality TV-style fight to the death, Katniss is now leading rebel forces in a fight to destroy Panem’s totalitarian ruler President Snow. Jeff Bock, of the box office tracker Exhibitor Relations, said he expects the movie to rake in $800 million worldwide -- a massive figure but less than the $865 million earned by “Catching Fire,” the second and most successful film in the series so far. KUR disburses IDR 4.7 trillion

NUSA DUA – Jamkrindo, the state owned company, on Tuesday stated that the people’s credit business (KUR), has disbursed IDR 4.7 trillion and aims to disburse a total of IDR 30 trillion by the end of the year.

“We function as the guarantor for three participating banks; BNI, BRI and Mandiri. We are trying to reach the target set by the president,” said President Director of Perum Jamkrindo, Diding S. Anwar on Tuesday, after the Chief Delegates Meeting of the 28th ACSIC Conference in Nusa Dua, Bali. Anwar explained that KUR guarantees follow the magnitude of the bank’s portfolio and that Jamkrindo is trying to attract new partners, both banks and non-bank institutions to participate in disbursing KUR, especially for Indonesian workers. “We are doing our best to reach the target of disbursing IDR 30 trillion in loans by the end of the year. For the time being we are still using the CAP (Contributory Asset Charges) approach that follows the lead of banks,” explained Anwar. By using Jamkrindo as a guarantor, banks are more confident about disbursing KUR to SMEs, despite the risk still being relatively high compared to other loans. KUR allocations will be increased from the 2015 figure of IDR 30 trillion to IDR 120 trillion for 2016. The increase in the targeted amount means that Jamkrindo faces a challenge in terms of accessing capital. However, as Jamkrindo is a state owned company, the government participates in seeking capital for loans. The amount of the state budget for loans of 2016 is in pending in parliament. Balinese Temple Ceremony

Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

US startup challenges Japan to giant robot battle

OAKLAND, California — They’ve been popularized in movies, television and video games, but giant fighting robots still haven’t left the realm of science fiction. That will soon change. Megabots Inc., an Oakland, California-based startup, has built a 15-foot (4.5-meter) mechanical gladiator called the Mark II and challenged a Japanese firm to an international battle for robot supremacy.

Tokyo-based Suidobashi Heavy Industries, maker of the 13-foot (4-meter) Kuratas, accepted the challenge, setting the stage for the first giant robot battle of its kind next year. The exact date and location are yet to be determined. Win or lose, it’s all part of Megabots’ plan by to make gladiatorstyle robot combat into big-time entertainment — a mix between Ultimate Fighting Championship and Formula One auto racing — while developing new industrial technologies and inspiring a new generation of engineers. The Megabots founders envision a sports league where teams from around the world build huge humanoid robots that throw each other down in stadiums filled with screaming fans. “Everyone wins as long as there is robot carnage,” said Megabots co-founder Matt Oehrlein, an electrical engineer. “People want to see these things fight. They want to see them punch each other, they want to see them ripped apart and they want to be entertained.” Megabots was launched in 2014 by Oehrlein, Gui Cavalcanti and Brinkley Warren, who grew up playing video games like “MechWarrior” and “BattleTech,” and wanted to fulfill their dreams of watching massive machines fight. “We want to bring the giant robots from science fiction and movies and video games to life because now we have the technology,” said Cavalcanti, a robotics engineer. “It’s really about: How do we put on the best show? How do we make the coolest fight?” Inside a cavernous Oakland

workshop, the Megabots founders built the Mark II — a 12,000-pound (5,443 kilograms) behemoth with tank treads, two-pilot cockpit and missile launcher that fires canon ball-sized paintballs. Then Oehrlein called out Suidobashi in a YouTube video: “We have a giant robot. You have a giant robot. You know what needs to happen. We challenge you to a duel.” Suidobashi’s founder Kogoro Kurata accepted in his own video: “We can’t let another country win this. Giant robots are Japanese culture. Yeah, I’ll fight. Absolutely.” Kurata also taunted the Megabots team: “Come on guys, make it cooler. Just building something huge and sticking guns on it, it’s super American.” The Megabots robot isn’t quite ready to take on Kuratas, a more polished fighting machine with a big, agile hand that mimics the movements of the pilot’s hand. “Our current robot, the Mark II, looks pretty intimidating,” Oehrlein said. “The truth is, it’s pretty slow. It’s top-heavy. It’s rusty, and it needs a set of armor upgrades to be able to compete in hand-to-hand combat,” That’s why Megabots launched an online Kickstarter campaign and raised more than $550,000 from robot fans to turn the Mark II into a real fighting machine — faster, tougher, more balanced and equipped with detachable weapons such as a giant chain saw or punching fist. Puspayoga on Monday stated that the process of guaranteeing SMEs that will be facilitated through Jamkrindo, will provide the necessary stimulus to encourage local SMEs to enter the export market. “Funding, which is one of the things that constrains SMEs can be resolved through the mechanism for guaranteeing loans. Now, SMEs can work on improving the quality of their products so as to remain competitive in the export market,” said Puspayoga after attending the Guarantee International Seminar (GIS) that was held in Nusa Dua. According to Puspayoga, with a certificate of eligibility, SMEs will be able to access many funding sectors, including banking institutions. “This will stimulate SMEs to further enrich the quality of their products as well as their packaging,” he said. The quality of Indonesian SME products should be able to compete with that of other countries, especially given that in just one month the ASEAN Economic Community will come into effect. Puspayoga emphasized that in order to facilitate the guaranteeing of loans for SMEs, a trust worthy rating system is required, which is why the ministry of KUKM (small and medium business enterprises) has cooperated with relevant agencies to create such an agency. “The Ministry of KUKM and Asippindo (Association of Indonesia’s Guarantee Institutions) will work together with the Financial Minister of Cooperatives and SMEs (KUKM), A.A.G.N. Puspayoga on Monday stated that the process of guaranteeing SMEs that will be facilitated through Jamkrindo, will provide the necessary stimulus to encourage local SMEs to enter the export market.

The system of certification for loan guarantees needs to be well designed in terms of risk sharing, premiums, governance, risk management, etc. In addition, SMEs should also be assisted in the making of proposals for loans, as well as management and book keeping. NEGARA - Abrasion in the coastal area of Pebuahan, Banyubiru village is getting worse. A number of tatami-seating style food stalls and school buildings have been eroded by seawater. Various measures to deal with abrasion have been applied including placing down sand bags and installing stone gab ions, but neither seems to be working and seawater continues to erode the land here. Several permanent buildings have also been destroyed, such as the MIN building that serves as an elementary school for the coastal region that has already become eroded -despite having been build quite recently. 212 survive ferry sinking SURABAYA - The Tanjung Perak authority confirmed here Tuesday that the number of survivors in the sinking of the KM Wihan Sejahtera ferry is 212, exceeding those recorded on the passenger manifest, the Tanjung Perak Port authority said. “There are only 153 passengers that are recorded on the manifest but, in fact, the total number of survivors is 212,” Head of Tanjung Perak Port Captain Rudiana told journalists, when questioned about survivors from the roll-on roll-off ferry. The difference in numbers is being investigated but, according to reports from the vessel’s operator, truck drivers and conductors might not have been accounted for prior to the departure, he said. “We have yet to learn whether there are passengers whose names were not put on the manifest. The operator will be questioned about this issue, and legal sanctions will be imposed if it is proven to have violated regulations,” he said. The 140-gt ferry sank near the pier on Monday at 09.30 am local time, but there were no reports issued about missing passengers until Tuesday afternoon. (ant)

Greece inks deal with creditors to unlock 12bn euros

ATHENS - Greece has struck a deal with its international creditors to unblock some 12 billion euros in much-needed loans, Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos said on Tuesday after marathon talks. “We have reached agreement on everything, including the 48 additional measures” that should allow the 12 billion euros ($12.8 billion) to be paid out on Friday, Tsakalotos told reporters. Greece in July accepted a three-year, 86-billion-euro ($93-billion) EU bailout that saved it from crashing out of the eurozone, but it came with strict conditions. Athens has since adopted a number of the unpopular reforms but came under creditor pressure to adopt further measures, such as streamlining home loan foreclosures. The agreement covers home foreclosures, which the government was reluctant to accept in order to ensure a safety net for more vulnerable households. The government should submit the agreed measures to the parliament later Tuesday for a vote on Thursday, the minister said. Eurozone officials are also expected to approve the agreement later Tuesday, ahead of a Friday decision to unlock the funds. The funds include 10 billion euros to recapitalise beleaguered Greek banks. After storming to power at the beginning of the year on a programme to free Greece from the restrictions of bailout programmes, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras reversed course and accepted a new financial lifeline. He won fresh elections the deal triggered, calling the bailout agreement a “painful compromise” and a “tactical retreat” that enabled the country to avoid bankruptcy and stay in the euro. (afp)

Indonesia and the wider Southeast Asian region have been suffering for weeks from so-called “haze” caused by smouldering forest and peatland fires, largely in Sumatra and Borneo islands that climate officials described as a crime against humanity. Green groups welcomed the Indonesia’s environment and forestry ministry’s decision late last month to review laws that allow smallholder farmers to burn. It has also asked plantation firms to halt peatland conversion, restore burnt areas, while banning planting on burnt peatland. Contradicting this, however, Agriculture Minister Amran Sulaiman said on Monday, 100,000 hectares of burnt peatland in Kalimantan may now be used

to plant corn and soybeans, according to Kontan newspaper. “We will ask for peatland that has already been burned to be converted into agricultural land,” Sulaiman was quoted in the newspaper, adding that the development should be led by local people and state-owned enterprises. Indonesian newlyweds ate alleged rapist’s genitals

BANDAR LAMPUNG - A newlywed Indonesian couple have been arrested over claims they dined on the genitals of the woman’s suspected rapist after her husband allegedly murdered him and cut off his private parts, police said Tuesday. The victim’s body was found in a burnt-out van after a suspected revenge attack sparked by claims from the new wife she was raped a week before her wedding on Sumatra island. The husband, 30-year-old Rudi Efendi, has admitted murdering the man after discovering his wife was not a virgin on their wedding night in September and being told of the alleged rape, but insists he acted alone. “I was so outraged,” Efendi told reporters after his arrest last month, adding that deciding to eat the victim’s genitals was “to cure my heartache”. Police say that after murdering the man, Efendi took home the victim’s severed genitals, ordered his 20-year-old wife to cook them, and the pair then ate them together. The victim was a driver, whom the wife used to date. Sulistyaningsih, a local police spokeswoman who goes by one name, told AFP: “The case is still under investigation but we strongly suspect that this is a premeditated murder.” The husband is accused of carrying out the murder, while police believe the wife acted as an accomplice. The victim was found dead in early October in a burnt-out van in Tulangbawang district, Lampung province. Police later arrested Efendi and his wife. Efendi had ordered his wife to contact the victim and set up a meeting, according to police. But when the victim arrived, he found only Efendi, who then allegedly stabbed him to death, cut off his genitals and set the vehicle on fire. (afp)

Summit in Philippines sets stage for climate action in Paris

MANILA, Philippines — When Typhoon Haiyan slammed into the central Philippines two years ago, flattening entire villages and killing thousands, the country became a poster child for the havoc wrought by global warming and increasingly extreme weather. French President Francoise Holland traveled early this year to the devastated town of Guiuan, ground zero of the strongest cyclone ever to make landfall, to show the world the damage and appeal for an ambitious deal at global climate change talks in Paris at the end of this month. Leaders of the 21-member Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum gathered this week in the Philippine capital Manila could help set the stage for greater progress in mitigating climate change ahead of the Nov. 30 Paris conference. MOSCOW — The Russian passenger plane that crashed in Egypt was brought down by a homemade bomb placed on board in a “terrorist” act, the head of Russia’s FSB security service told President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday. “According to our experts, a homemade explosive device equivalent to 1 kilogram of TNT went off onboard, which caused the plane to break up in the air, which explains why the fuselage was scattered over such a large territory. I can certainly say that this was a terrorist act,” Alexander Bortnikov said. All 224 people on board, most of them Russian tourists, were killed in the Oct. 31 crash. Putin vowed to hunt down those responsible for the attack. “There’s no statute of limitations for this, we need to know all of their names,” Putin said. “We’re going to look for them everywhere wherever they are hiding. We will find them in any place on Earth and punish them.” IS has claimed responsibility for bringing the Russian plane down in written statements, as well as video and audio messages posted on the Internet following the crash. It said the attack was retaliation for Russia’s air campaign against IS — and other groups — in Syria, where Moscow wants to preserve the rule of President Bashar Assad. ATHENS — A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of at least 6.1 hit the western Greek island of Lefkada on Tuesday, with local reports indicating buildings had been damaged and one person had been killed. The temblor was felt across western Greece, with people on Lefkada and nearby Ionian Sea island of Kefalonia rushing out into the streets. The fire department said it was sending crews to Lefkada to

LONDON - Rafael Nadal’s late-season resurgence continued at the ATP World Tour Finals when he beat wayward French Open champion Stanislas Wawrinka 6-3 6-2 to open his account on Monday. The Spaniard, who has climbed back to fifth in the rankings after falling to 10th in a miserable summer, took advantage of an error-strewn Wawrinka display to move level with Andy Murray at the top of Ilie Nastase Group. Nadal, back at the Tour Finals after missing out last year because of appendicitis surgery, dropped his opening service game to love but then broke Wawrinka’s as the first nine points all went the way of the receiver. Ireland reaches Euro 2016 with 2-0 win over Bosnia

DUBLIN — Ireland qualified for next year’s European Championship on Monday as Jonathan Walters returned from suspension to score both goals in a 2-0 victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina and secure a 3-1 aggregate win in their playoff. Walters converted a penalty in the 24th minute after Ervin Zukanovic was harshly adjudged to have handled Daryl Murphy’s cross. The Stoke forward all but confirmed Ireland’s ticket to France with his second goal 20 minutes from full time to set off celebrations at the Aviva Stadium. “The whole team on the pitch are heroes,” Walters said. “We got there in the end, we did it the hard way, but we got there. “You’ve got to take it in because these moments don’t come round often in a career.” Walters took his tally to five goals in his past six qualifying matches. “Walters is top of the lot. He has been sensational,” Ireland coach Martin O’Neill said. Walters rolled the penalty into the bottom left corner, sending former Stoke teammate Begovic the wrong way. Edin Dzeko almost immediately leveled as Bosnia threw men forward in search of the equalizer but shot into the sidenetting. Bosnia came out with renewed intent in the second half and Haris Medunjanin’s free kick was deflected just over the bar five minutes after the break. The statement explained the advice was due to the current state of high alert and a Belgian-based French suspect from Friday’s attacks being on the run. “We deeply regret that such a friendly match between two motivated teams is

cancelled so late and we understand the disappointment of many supporters,” the statement added. “Taking into account the exceptional circumstances, we cannot however take any security risk for our players and fans.” The match had already been thrown into doubt following Friday’s attacks in Paris, particularly after investigators identified a Belgian national as the possible mastermind, with Brussels seen as the springboard.
