“I knew the paparazzi were going to be a reality in my life,” the 24-year-old Oscar winner said in an interview Saturday. “But I didn’t know that I would feel anxiety every time I open my front door, or that being chased by 10 men you don’t know, or being surrounded, feels invasive and makes me feel scared and gets my adrenaline going every day.” Lawrence was recently in the news when private nude photos of her and other celebrities were hacked, then posted online. She took the forceful position then that the hacking was not a scandal but “a sex crime.” The actress spoke to the AP Saturday while promoting “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay: Part 1,” the third installment of the blockbuster franchise that catapulted her to stardom. “You can say, ‘This (invasion of privacy) is part of my job and this is going to be a reality of my life,’” Lawrence said, “but what you don’t expect is how your body and how your emotions are going to react to it.” And yet, she added with her typical candor, the general public isn’t very sympathetic to such celebrity complaints: “Nobody wants to help us because it seems like, you know, ‘Shut up, millionaires!’” Sitting alongside her co-stars Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth, Lawrence told the AP that although she adores her job, “There are some things that I couldn’t really prepare for.” As an example, she described checking into a hotel and opening the window to discover “a team of paparazzi outside that are shooting up into my hotel room. And we can’t ask them to move because they’re on public property. And they can photograph me because I’m a public person or can chase me because I’m a public person.” Lawrence told Vanity Fair not long after the hacking episode, in which the photos were posted on various websites, that even those who looked at the photos online were perpetuating what she called the sex crime. Lawrence’s co-stars echoed her concerns. “They say, well, this is part of it, you should have known — but you can’t know. You don’t know how hard it is to lose your anonymity until it’s gone,” noted Hutcherson, 22, who plays Peeta Mellark to Lawrence’s Katniss Everdeen. Added Hemsworth, 24, who plays Gale Hawthorne: “There’s really no right reason for that (kind of thing) to be allowed.”

NEW YORK — At the movies, idiocy never goes out of style. Twenty years after the 1994 original, “Dumb and Dumber To” opened with $38.1 million at the weekend box office, according to studio estimates Sunday. The Universal sequel debuted almost exactly two decades after the Farrelly brothers first introduced the Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels low-IQ duo. “Dumb and Dumber To” edged out the animated Disney adventure “Big Hero 6,” which took in $36 million in its second week. Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi epic “Interstellar” slid to third in its second week with an estimated $29.2 million. The film continues to blast off overseas, where it took in $106 million over the weekend, with sales particularly boosted by a strong opening in China. The top three films took up the lion’s share of the box office, with the no. 4 film, the romance “Beyond the Lights,” opening with a distant $6.5 million. In a Hollywood constantly updating, rebooting and sequalizing old properties, “Dumb and Dumber To” was still unique. In between installments, there was also a 2003 prequel, though it was made with different actors and wasn’t directed by Bobby and Peter Farrelly. “This was a gamble,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for box-office tracker Rentrak. “Cinematic history is littered with long-lead sequels that just haven’t worked.” “It’s always a risky move to wait this long, but in this case, the casting of Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels really made a difference,” he added. Most delayed sequels — “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps,” ‘’Indiana Jones: Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” — depend on the addition of a new, younger star like Shia LaBeouf. The closest comparison to “Dumb and Dumber To” might be 1998’s “Blues Brothers 2000,” made 18 years after the original. But with John Goodman stepping in for John Belushi, it opened with just $6.1 million. Staying power is rare in comedy, where chemistry is especially difficult to regain. But “Dumb and Dumber To” gave moviegoers a chance to see Carrey back in his old, physically comedic form. It’s his best live-action debut since 2003’s “Bruce Almighty.”

He said the impact of fuel price hike would be absolutely felt by those having low or fixed incomes. In Bali, for those belonging to
community with low income such as laborers, the fuel price hike would inevitably affect the level of social welfare. “The realization of fuel price hike predicted to be announced in November or before the beginning of 2015 can be said that it is not the right moment,” he said. Even though it was not affected by the increase in fuel price, he added, the inflation in November-December had been quite high. providing subsidies from the real economic price. When comparing to Timor Leste, the price of nonsubsidized gasoline reached IDR 10,000-IDR 11,000 per liter. “So, it does not matter because people will be familiar with the increasingly lower subsidy. In the long term, it will be very good as the fuel will no longer be subsidized. For economic stability, it must be prepared with an infrastructure. NEGARA - Waste disposal into the sea committed by entrepreneur of shrimp breeding ponds owned by foreign enterprise (Korea) at Yeh Kuning village, Jembrana, was complained by residents, Sunday (Nov 16). From the observation at location, the building of fish pond located on the west of melasti (purificatory rite) and nganyut (floating ashes in relation to cremation procession) venue at local village could be found large pipes projecting into the sea. From behind the building surrounded by a high wall emerged two large pipes shored by wooden beams emitting black liquid waste. Even, it exuded pungent smell. Some residents who performed the nganyut procession complained about the pungent smell. Based on information, the pond was a shrimp nursery owned by a Korean who had settled there. It was said the pond was established thirty years ago. “This venue is commonly used to perform nganyut related to cremation ceremony and melasti purificatory rite, while this waste is very disturbing,” said one of the local residents participating in the nganyut procession last Sunday, I.B. Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Comet photos awaken wonder at space exploration

It took a set of retro-looking images to reawaken the world’s sense of wonder about space exploration. The black-and-white pictures of a rocky surface sent back from a comet hundreds of millions of miles away are the product of an astonishing feat of science and some sophisticated imaging technology. But for millions gazing at them with excited awe, the response that the dusty gray rocks and pitch-dark shadows provoke is almost primal. It’s space as we imagined it in earliest childhood — deep and dark, harsh and alien — and with the Philae lander, humanity has made a fragile foothold on it. That feeling is perfectly captured in one image, an interplanetary selfie, in which one of the lander’s three feet is visible in the corner of the shot. To be sure, the science is impressive. These crisp images have come from 311 million miles (500 million kilometers) away. The washing
machine-sized lander has a close-up camera on its underside and is also mounted with seven high-definition micro-cameras, each weighing just 3.5 ounces (100 grams), designed to endure temperatures as low as minus 238 Fahrenheit (minus 150 Celsius), and arranged to capture 360-degree panoramas of the comet’s surface. (Some of the pictures released by the European Space Agency have been composites of several images.) But our reaction is about more than scientific appreciation. The stark and elegant pictures cut through the usual space-exploration imagery of rockets and gadgets and flashing lights and take us back to the early black-and-white sci-fi movies many of us remember seeing. A shot taken as the lander descended makes the comet’s surface look like gray plasticine, and evokes George Melies’ 1902 “A Trip to the Moon,” with its famous sequence of a rocket zooming into the eye of the man in the moon.
Study finds as world warms, US gets more lightning While those conditions were already known to promote thunderstorms in general, the new work focused on lightning strikes themselves. Researchers calculated just how much lightning flashes increase as air warms, clouds fill with more energy from water vapor and rainfall intensifies. They concluded that for every degree Fahrenheit the world warms in the future, lightning strikes will go up nearly 7 percent. That’s 12 percent for every degree Celsius. Because scientists forecast that the world may get about 7 degrees warmer (4 degrees Celsius) by the end of the century, based on current carbon dioxide emission trends, that comes to a 50 percent increase in lightning strikes, said David Romps. He’s
the atmospheric scientist at the University of California Berkeley who led the study. “When you used to have two lightning strikes, now you’ll have three,” Romps said. “It’s a substantial increase.” The researchers based their calculation on 2011 weather data from across the U.S. They presented their results in a paper released Thursday by the journal Science. Romps said the key is that warmer air holds more water vapor. Water vapor is fuel for thunderstorms, sparking more lightning. The energy that storms get from vapor is the biggest driver in increasing lightning strikes in the future, Romps said. The new study shows that at any given level of rainfall intensity, there will be more lightning
in the future. Harold Brooks, a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration severe storm meteorologist, said the study makes sense and marks an advance over previous work. The result is important mostly because it means more natural sparks for dangerous wildfires, which are already forecast to worsen with man-made warming, Romps, Brooks and other meteorologists said. Lightning deaths have been falling from about 100 per year in the 1960s and 1970s to 33 per year in the last decade. So far this year 25 people have been killed, NOAA data shows. Brooks said the drop is because of people changing their behavior to be safer in storms and better medical treatment of lightning victims.

BANGLI - Revenue target from tourism sector of Bangli County in 2014 seems difficult to be achieved. Up to October, the revenue generated by the whole tourist attractions managed by the government only reached around IDR 5.2 billion. Actually the government sets the target at IDR 8.4 billion. The Head of Bangli Culture and Tourism Agency, Wayan Adnyana, said that based on the realization, the revenue from the tourism sector in Bangli reached 62.88 percent. The largest revenue contributor was still derived from the levy of admission tickets collected at a few booths. Then, it was followed by the levy at Penglipuran tourism village, Kehen and climbing attraction at Mount Batur which had been managed by the Association of the Mount Batur Climbing Guides (PPPGB). Although the remaining time to achieve the revenue target of IDR 8.4 billion were only one and a half months to go, he admitted to be still optimistic if the target could be achieved by the end of the year. Or at least, the realization of revenue by the end of next year exceeded the achievement of last year, amounting to IDR 7.5 billion. “At least it can exceed the achievement of last year,” he said. Meanwhile, when asked about
the plan of local government to increase the tourism revenue target to IDR 10 billion in the upcoming year, Adnyana remained optimistic. According to him, the increase in revenue target in 2015 would be accompanied by the revision of admission ticket price with the increase of two hundred percent. “We’re very optimistic because the increase in the target will also be accompanied by the changes in ticket price,” he added. As reported previously, the Bangli government planned to raise the price of admission ticket to tourist areas of Kintamani in 2015. As planned, the current ticket price of IDR 10,000 would be increased to IDR 30,000 for foreign travelers and IDR 20,000 for domestic travelers. In addition to planning to raise the ticket price, the Regent of Bangli, Made Gianyar, would also target the tourist arrival to Kintamani to reach 1 million people in a year. BANGKOK - Thailand’s economy grew at a lacklustre 0.6 percent in the third quarter, prompting authorities to again clip the full year growth forecast, in a blow to a junta which has vowed to kick-start the economy following their coup. Prime Minister Prayut Chan-O-Cha, the former army chief who led the May coup, has pinned the junta’s legitimacy to injecting zip into Thailand’s once dynamic economy after months of political protests froze government spending, scared off tourists and battered consumer spending. But so far there have been few signs of economic revival, despite a pledge to increase government spending and push through much-needed infrastructure projects. Between July and September the economy expanded 0.6 percent compared to the previous year, the National Economic and Social Development Board reported. It grew 1.1 percent on a quarter-by-quarter basis, the board said, adding Thailand’s economy achieved a weak 0.2 percent growth across the first nine months of the year. “The Thai economy in 2014 is expected to grow by 1.0 percent,” NESDB added, trimming its growth outlook from 1.5-2.0 percent. But the board said Southeast Asia’s second largest economy should rebound next year to grow at 3.5-4.5 percent on improving exports, internal investment and a recovery of Thailand’s key tourism sector, which has been pummelled in recent months. Tourists have shied away from Thailand, where martial law has been in place since the coup, which followed months of sometimes violent anti-government protests. The murder of two British holidaymakers on a resort island in September also caused concern. The Immigration Bureau said there had been a near nine percent drop in tourist arrivals between January and October, compared to the same period in 2013. But “the calmer political climate and the government’s tourism promotion campaign should help to revive tourist arrival growth in the upcoming high season,” according to Krystal Tan of Capital Economics. An uptick in the US economy should also stimulate Thai exports, she added.

The world’s third-largest economy contracted at a 1.6 percent pace in the July-September quarter, the government said Monday, contrary to predictions it would grow after a big drop the previous quarter. An economy is generally considered to be in recession when it fails to grow for two consecutive quarters. This is not just bad news for Japan as it deepens uncertainty about China were growth is slowing and for the 18-country eurozone that grew only 0.2 percent in the same quarter. To get around the difficulty of getting fodder during dry season, the cattle farmers at Yangapi village, Tembuku, was given training on the procedures of processing fodder chemically by using ammonia (NH3). The Head of the Bangli Livestock and Fisheries Agency, Made Alit Parwata, said the animal feed processing training was held in order to overcome the problem of fodder stock, especially during dry season. The training was filled by a number of resource persons, namely the farmers who had reached success in their field and the Center for Agricultural Technology Assessment (BPTP) Bali. In the training, farmers were given the technique of preserving fodder chemically by using ammonia gas. The elephant grass was then mixed with ammonia (NH3) and then stored in plastic containers. Alit Parwata said the grass mixed with ammonia could be preserved for up to four months. With the method, the grass texture would turn softer. Besides, the content of crude protein would also increase from 1.5 percent to 9 percent. “In addition, it can also inhibit the growth of mushroom, so that the straw waste or other grasses can be used,” he explained. He expected the training of farmers could cope with the fodder scarcity considering the fodder was an important factor to support the livestock farming. “The increase in body weight and performance of livestock depends on the fodder. MOSCOW — Russia’s president said he believes peace in Ukraine is possible but that neither side is fully holding up a truce struck in September. In an interview with German television broadcast late Sunday, Putin said he was convinced that it was possible to end the deadlock in east Ukraine, where pro-Russian rebels have been battling Kiev’s troops in a conflict that has claimed at least 4,000 lives since March. But the Russian leader also noted that neither the rebels nor Ukrainian troops have fully withdrawn from key locations in the region in order to create a buffer zone, a key part of a truce deal agreed to in September. “It is true that there are certain settlements that the armed rebel formations should abandon, and they are not being abandoned,” he said. But he blamed the Ukrainians for not holding up their end of the agreement and setting a bad example for the rebels to follow. Since Ukraine’s pro-Russian president was ousted from power last February, Moscow has often referred to the new, Western-leaning government as a “junta” brought to power by an unconstitutional coup. Putin spoke more diplomatically on Sunday, saying he believed Ukraine “is a big European country with a European culture.” But he also lashed out against
far-right nationalist elements in Ukraine and against what Moscow perceives as the repression of Russian-speakers in the region. “I’ll say this bluntly: we’re very concerned that the desire could arise to use ethnic cleansing. We’re afraid about a drift toward neo-Nazism” in the region, he said. British officials said they were investigating a case of the H5 bird flu virus in northern England, but noted it’s not the more dangerous H5N1 strain. They said all 6,000 ducks at a breeding farm in the Driffield area of East Yorkshire will be killed and a restriction zone was being set up to prevent further spread of the infection. Tests were also being carried out at nearby farms. The UK government food agency said there is no risk to the food chain and British Chief Veterinary Officer Nigel Gibbens told BBC the risk of the disease spreading is probably quite low. It was the first bird flu outbreak in Britain in six years, officials said. A government spokeswoman said Britain has a “strong track record of controlling and eliminating previous outbreaks of avian flu in the UK.” The Dutch government, meanwhile, banned the transport of poultry and eggs throughout the Netherlands after finding the H5N8 strain of bird flu at a chicken farm. All 150,000 chickens at the farm in Hekendorp, 65 kilometers (40 miles) south of Amsterdam, were being slaughtered and 16 other nearby farms were being checked. It was not clear how the farm became infected. “There is a small risk that it can be transmitted from animal to humans but there has to be intensive contact. JAKARTA - Ahead of the government’s plan to announce a fuel price hike soon, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Sudirman Said, said that Indonesia still has enough national fuel stock. “We have no problem regarding national stock of fuel,” Said stated, adding that state-owned oil company Pertamina had purchased extra fuel to add to the existing reserves. When asked about when the government would announce the fuel price hike, the minister pointed out that the subject would be discussed further during the cabinet meeting here on Monday with President Joko Widodo, also known as Jokowi. Furthermore, Said expressed hope that people would understand the reason behind the government’s decision to soon withdraw the fuel subsidy, a move that will increase the cost of fuel in the country. The government explained that allocation of fuel subsidy was not effective and proposed to reallocate the funds to the development of the education and human resources sectors. Currently, the government is looking into the possibility of raising the price of subsidized fuel. Among factors being taken into consideration are the price of world’s crude oil, inflation rate, and the availability of logistics. During his tour abroad to attend the APEC, ASEAN and G-20 summits recently, President Jokowi noted that he would mull over whether to increase cost of fuel because the world’s oil price was now on the decline.

The focus of the meet was along the lines of the elaborate plans he discussed with a few state leaders at the APEC, ASEAN and G-20 summits. “Plans on infrastructure development can be further presented by ministers and directors of state-owned companies,” President Jokowi said in his opening speech of the cabinet meeting at the presidential office on Monday. On the sidelines of the APEC Summit in Beijing, China, on November 11, Jokowi discussed his plans on infrastructure development in Indonesia with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, and South Korean President Park Gyeun-hye. “We will push the discussion on the technical development of infrastructure to the ministerial meeting. We have at least reached an understanding with the four state leaders (those of China, Russia, Japan, and South Korea) and sought their involvement to accelerate our infrastructure development to drive economic growth,” Jokowi noted. Italy draws 1-1 against Croatia amid crowd trouble

MILAN — Italy drew 1-1 against Croatia in a troublefilled European Championship qualifier at the San Siro on Sunday, to leave both teams level at the top of their group. The match had to be suspended for 10 minutes after Croatia fans threw fireworks onto the pitch. Riot police waded into the stands and eventually the final 17 minutes were played. Play had also been halted in the first half for a few minutes under similar circumstances. “I’m saddened by the fans’ behavior,” Croatia coach Niko Kovac said. “I already apologized on the pitch and I apologize again, to everyone. I’m sorry. “I didn’t know what to do. I don’t have words now. There were kids there. This is not football. This is not a fair image of our country or our people.” Antonio Candreva scored his first Italy goal against the run of play in the 11th minute but Croatia leveled just four minutes later through Ivan Perisic following a rare howler from Italy goalkeeper and captain Gianluigi Buffon. “I think we had the game under control for 90 minutes,” Kovac added. “They were good in defense but we had more opportunities and could have scored to take the three points home. After a delay of around 10 minutes, during which there also appeared to be a small fire in the stands, play was able to continue after riot police cleared a sector of fans. “I feared the match wouldn’t be able to continue,” Conte said. “I saw the referee very convinced after the last suspension and I knew that if one more thing happened he would call it off. We hope that in the future this doesn’t
happen again.” Croatia had only ever lost once to Italy, their first meeting in 1942, winning three and drawing three. It was all Croatia in the opening stages as Italy struggled to get out of its own half but it was the home side which took the lead when Simone Zaza’s shot was charged down and, seeing his path blocked, the Sassuolo striker rolled it back for Candreva to drive into the bottom left corner. Croatia leveled almost immediately after Perisic cut inside the left side of the area and fired under Buffon. Play had to be temporarily halted for 90 seconds as Croatia fans threw flares onto the pitch and a public announcement was made shortly afterwards warning them not to repeat the incident. WEST BROMWICH, England — Saido Berahino’s path to becoming one of the new stars of English football began with kickabouts with his cousins on the streets of Burundi, using a makeshift ball made from plastic bags or rolledup socks. It then involved fleeing his war-torn African homeland after his father’s death to start a new life in England when he was 10, a brief but painful separation from his mother, and being discovered by West Bromwich Albion through his prolific scoring in an inner-city team for disadvantaged school kids. Nurtured by his club and adopted country for the past decade, Berahino has blossomed into a lethal, two-footed, technically gifted striker courted by some of the biggest teams in the Premier League. And he is expected to cap a breakthrough season by making his senior international debut for England in Tuesday’s friendly against Scotland in Glasgow. It’s a remarkable, unlikely story of triumph over adversity. “Mentally I could not be any more prepared,” Berahino said ahead of the biggest game of his career. “The experience I have been through in life has made me a stronger person and character. And I don’t think anything now will break me down.” When Berahino runs out in an England jersey for the first time — and it’ll most likely be as a substitute at Celtic Park — it will be a proud, satisfying moment for the youth coaches at West Brom who are the unsung stars behind his rise. In 2004, Stephen Hopcroft, the club’s head of academy recruitment, was alerted to an 11-year-old
kid who was scoring “millions of goals” in a local youth league and invited him to a training session. Hopcroft was blown away by what he saw. “Someone fizzed a ball across to him and his touch was impeccable,” Hopcroft recalled in an interview at West Brom’s training center. “Saido was just a natural footballer, he caressed the ball when he kicked it.” Berahino was immediately signed up and West Brom’s coaches encountered a humble, happy boy who couldn’t quite believe where his life had taken him. The previous year, Berahino had arrived as a refugee in England separately from his mother, Liliane. He couldn’t speak any English and was forced by immigration officials to go through DNA tests before being allowed to be reunited with her once she had been tracked down. Berahino had to spend two weeks in a care home while he awaited the results of the tests. Together again with his mother, West Brom soon became his extended family. The club helped the Berahinos find a home and Saido apply for citizenship. “Because of what he came from, everything he was getting was like, ‘Wow, I can’t believe I’m getting this help and this support,’” said Mark Harrison, West Brom’s academy manager. “Saido was actually a happy young boy and when he was in the environment with us, we gave him security and stability and some normality.” Harrison said it wasn’t long before Berahino spoke “perfect” English. “Driving him home (after training sessions), he would articulate better than some of the other kids that had been brought up here,” Harrison said. Italy draws 1-1 against Croatia amid crowd trouble

MILAN — Italy drew 1-1 against Croatia in a troublefilled European Championship qualifier at the San Siro on Sunday, to leave both teams level at the top of their group. The match had to be suspended for 10 minutes after Croatia fans threw fireworks onto the pitch. Riot police waded into the stands and eventually the final 17 minutes were played. Play had also been halted in the first half for a few minutes under similar circumstances. “I’m saddened by the fans’ behavior,” Croatia coach Niko Kovac said. “I already apologized on the pitch and I apologize again, to everyone. I’m sorry. “I didn’t know what to do. I don’t have words now. There were kids there. This is not football. This is not a fair image of our country or our people.” Antonio Candreva scored his first Italy goal against the run of play in the 11th minute but Croatia leveled just four minutes later through Ivan Perisic following a rare howler from Italy goalkeeper and captain Gianluigi Buffon. “I think we had the game under control for 90 minutes,” Kovac added. “They were good in defense but we had more opportunities and could have scored to take the three points home. We hope that in the future this doesn’t
happen again.” Croatia had only ever lost once to Italy, their first meeting in 1942, winning three and drawing three. It was all Croatia in the opening stages as Italy struggled to get out of its own half but it was the home side which took the lead when Simone Zaza’s shot was charged down and, seeing his path blocked, the Sassuolo striker rolled it back for Candreva to drive into the bottom left corner. Croatia leveled almost immediately after Perisic cut inside the left side of the area and fired under Buffon. WEST BROMWICH, England — Saido Berahino’s path to becoming one of the new stars of English football began with kickabouts with his cousins on the streets of Burundi, using a makeshift ball made from plastic bags or rolledup socks. It then involved fleeing his war-torn African homeland after his father’s death to start a new life in England when he was 10, a brief but painful separation from his mother, and being discovered by West Bromwich Albion through his prolific scoring in an inner-city team for disadvantaged school kids. Nurtured by his club and adopted country for the past decade, Berahino has blossomed into a lethal, two-footed, technically gifted striker courted by some of the biggest teams in the Premier League. And he is expected to cap a breakthrough season by making his senior international debut for England in Tuesday’s friendly against Scotland in Glasgow. It’s a remarkable, unlikely story of triumph over adversity. “Mentally I could not be any more prepared,” Berahino said ahead of the biggest game of his career. “The experience I have been through in life has made me a stronger person and character. And I don’t think anything now will break me down.” When Berahino runs out in an England jersey for the first time — and it’ll most likely be as a substitute at Celtic Park — it will be a proud, satisfying moment for the youth coaches at West Brom who are the unsung stars behind his rise. In 2004, Stephen Hopcroft, the club’s head of academy recruitment, was alerted to an 11-year-old
kid who was scoring “millions of goals” in a local youth league and invited him to a training session. Hopcroft was blown away by what he saw. “Someone fizzed a ball across to him and his touch was impeccable,” Hopcroft recalled in an interview at West Brom’s training center. “Saido was just a natural footballer, he caressed the ball when he kicked it.” Berahino was immediately signed up and West Brom’s coaches encountered a humble, happy boy who couldn’t quite believe where his life had taken him. The previous year, Berahino had arrived as a refugee in England separately from his mother, Liliane. He couldn’t speak any English and was forced by immigration officials to go through DNA tests before being allowed to be reunited with her once she had been tracked down. Berahino had to spend two weeks in a care home while he awaited the results of the tests. Together again with his mother, West Brom soon became his extended family. The club helped the Berahinos find a home and Saido apply for citizenship. “Because of what he came from, everything he was getting was like, ‘Wow, I can’t believe I’m getting this help and this support,’” said Mark Harrison, West Brom’s academy manager. “Saido was actually a happy young boy and when he was in the environment with us, we gave him security and stability and some normality.” Harrison said it wasn’t long before Berahino spoke “perfect” English. “Driving him home (after training sessions), he would articulate better than some of the other kids that had been brought up here,” Harrison said. Putin says sides not abiding peace deal in Ukraine Associated Press
MOSCOW — Russia’s president said he believes peace in Ukraine is possible but that neither side is fully holding up a truce struck in September. In an interview with German television broadcast late Sunday, Putin said he was convinced that it was possible to end the deadlock in east Ukraine, where pro-Russian rebels have been battling Kiev’s troops in a conflict that has claimed at least 4,000 lives since March. But the Russian leader also noted that neither the rebels nor Ukrainian troops have fully withdrawn from key locations in the region in order to create a buffer zone, a key part of a truce deal agreed to in September. “It is true that there are certain settlements that the armed rebel formations should abandon, and they are not being abandoned,” he said. But he blamed the Ukrainians for not holding up their end of the agreement and setting a bad example for the rebels to follow. Since Ukraine’s pro-Russian president was ousted from power last February, Moscow has often referred to the new, Western-leaning government as a “junta” brought to power by an unconstitutional coup. Putin spoke more diplomatically on Sunday, saying he believed Ukraine “is a big European country with a European culture.” But he also lashed out against
far-right nationalist elements in Ukraine and against what Moscow perceives as the repression of Russian-speakers in the region. “I’ll say this bluntly: we’re very concerned that the desire could arise to use ethnic cleansing. We’re afraid about a drift toward neo-Nazism” in the region, he said. In response to a question about whether Russia was arming the rebels, as contended by both Kiev and the West, Putin said merely that “anyone waging a fight that they believe fair will find weapons.” He stressed that without such arms the rebels would be quickly destroyed by the Ukrainian forces — something Russia “does not want, and will not allow.” While Putin stopped short of acknowledging Russia’s material role in the conflict, his comments went further in emphasizing Moscow’s willingness to support the separatists than ever before.
During a speech Monday after the G-20 summit in Australia, German Chancellor Angela Merkel struck a defiant note on sanctions against Russia for its role in Ukraine, saying that those measures would remain in place “as far and long as they are needed.” Merkel spoke out against a political system dominated by “spheres of influence, which spurn international law,” and warned that regional conflicts like the one raging in east Ukraine “can very quickly broaden to major fires.” But in Brussels, the European Union’s foreign affairs chief said more sanctions against Russia would not help end the east Ukraine crisis. Federica Mogherini said at a meeting of EU foreign ministers that there was a need to re-launch a dialogue with Russia, and also said she is seeking more ways to assist Ukraine in implementing economic and institutional reforms.
LONDON — Chickens were being slaughtered in the Netherlands and Britain was preparing to kill ducks after two cases of bird flu were discovered in Europe — but officials insisted Monday that the risk to public health was very low. British officials said they were investigating a case of the H5 bird flu virus in northern England, but noted it’s not the more dangerous H5N1 strain. They said all 6,000 ducks at a breeding farm in the Driffield area of East Yorkshire will be killed and a restriction zone was being set up to prevent further spread of the infection. Tests were also being carried out at nearby farms. The UK government food agency said there is no risk to the food chain and British Chief Veterinary Officer Nigel Gibbens told BBC the risk of the disease spreading is probably quite low. It was the first bird flu outbreak in Britain in six years, officials said. When asked about when the government would announce the fuel price hike, the minister pointed out that the subject would be discussed further during the cabinet meeting here on Monday with President Joko Widodo, also known as Jokowi. Furthermore, Said expressed hope that people would understand the reason behind the government’s decision to soon withdraw the fuel subsidy, a move that will increase the cost of fuel in the country. It grew 1.1 percent on a quarter-by-quarter basis, the board said, adding Thailand’s economy achieved a weak 0.2 percent growth across the first nine months of the year. “The Thai economy in 2014 is expected to grow by 1.0 percent,” NESDB added, trimming its growth outlook from 1.5-2.0 percent. But the board said Southeast Asia’s second largest economy should rebound next year to grow at 3.5-4.5 percent on improving exports, internal investment and a recovery of Thailand’s key tourism sector, which has been pummelled in recent months. Tourists have shied away from Thailand, where martial law has been in place since the coup, which followed months of sometimes violent anti-government protests. The murder of two British holidaymakers on a resort island in September also caused concern. The Immigration Bureau said there had been a near nine percent drop in tourist arrivals between January and October, compared to the same period in 2013. But “the calmer political climate and the government’s tourism promotion campaign should help to revive tourist arrival growth in the upcoming high season,” according to Krystal Tan of Capital Economics. An uptick in the US economy should also stimulate Thai exports, she added.

The world’s third-largest economy contracted at a 1.6 percent pace in the July-September quarter, the government said Monday, contrary to predictions it would grow after a big drop the previous quarter. An economy is generally considered to be in recession when it fails to grow for two consecutive quarters. This is not just bad news for Japan as it deepens uncertainty about China were growth is slowing and for the 18-country eurozone that grew only 0.2 percent in the same quarter. To get around the difficulty of getting fodder during dry season, the cattle farmers at Yangapi village, Tembuku, was given training on the procedures of processing fodder chemically by using ammonia (NH3). The Head of the Bangli Livestock and Fisheries Agency, Made Alit Parwata, said the animal feed processing training was held in order to overcome the problem of fodder stock, especially during dry season. The training was filled by a number of resource persons, namely the farmers who had reached success in their field and the Center for Agricultural Technology Assessment (BPTP) Bali. In the training, farmers were given the technique of preserving fodder chemically by using ammonia gas. The elephant grass was then mixed with ammonia (NH3) and then stored in plastic containers. Alit Parwata said the grass mixed with ammonia could be preserved for up to four months. With the method, the grass texture would turn softer. Besides, the content of crude protein would also increase from 1.5 percent to 9 percent. “In addition, it can also inhibit the growth of mushroom, so that the straw waste or other grasses can be used,” he explained. He expected the training of farmers could cope with the fodder scarcity considering the fodder was an important factor to support the livestock farming. “The increase in body weight and performance of livestock depends on the fodder. It took a set of retro-looking images to reawaken the world’s sense of wonder about space exploration. The black-and-white pictures of a rocky surface sent back from a comet hundreds of millions of miles away are the product of an astonishing feat of science and some sophisticated imaging technology. But for millions gazing at them with excited awe, the response that the dusty gray rocks and pitch-dark shadows provoke is almost primal. It’s space as we imagined it in earliest childhood — deep and dark, harsh and alien — and with the Philae lander, humanity has made a fragile foothold on it. That feeling is perfectly captured in one image, an interplanetary selfie, in which one of the lander’s three feet is visible in the corner of the shot. To be sure, the science is impressive. These crisp images have come from 311 million miles (500 million kilometers) away. The washing
machine-sized lander has a close-up camera on its underside and is also mounted with seven high-definition micro-cameras, each weighing just 3.5 ounces (100 grams), designed to endure temperatures as low as minus 238 Fahrenheit (minus 150 Celsius), and arranged to capture 360-degree panoramas of the comet’s surface. (Some of the pictures released by the European Space Agency have been composites of several images.) But our reaction is about more than scientific appreciation. The stark and elegant pictures cut through the usual space-exploration imagery of rockets and gadgets and flashing lights and take us back to the early black-and-white sci-fi movies many of us remember seeing. A shot taken as the lander descended makes the comet’s surface look like gray plasticine, and evokes George Melies’ 1902 “A Trip to the Moon,” with its famous sequence of a rocket zooming into the eye of the man in the moon.
Study finds as world warms, US gets more lightning While those conditions were already known to promote thunderstorms in general, the new work focused on lightning strikes themselves. Researchers calculated just how much lightning flashes increase as air warms, clouds fill with more energy from water vapor and rainfall intensifies. They concluded that for every degree Fahrenheit the world warms in the future, lightning strikes will go up nearly 7 percent. That’s 12 percent for every degree Celsius. Because scientists forecast that the world may get about 7 degrees warmer (4 degrees Celsius) by the end of the century, based on current carbon dioxide emission trends, that comes to a 50 percent increase in lightning strikes, said David Romps. He’s
the atmospheric scientist at the University of California Berkeley who led the study. “When you used to have two lightning strikes, now you’ll have three,” Romps said. “It’s a substantial increase.” The researchers based their calculation on 2011 weather data from across the U.S. They presented their results in a paper released Thursday by the journal Science. Romps said the key is that warmer air holds more water vapor. Water vapor is fuel for thunderstorms, sparking more lightning. The energy that storms get from vapor is the biggest driver in increasing lightning strikes in the future, Romps said. The new study shows that at any given level of rainfall intensity, there will be more lightning
in the future. Harold Brooks, a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration severe storm meteorologist, said the study makes sense and marks an advance over previous work. The result is important mostly because it means more natural sparks for dangerous wildfires, which are already forecast to worsen with man-made warming, Romps, Brooks and other meteorologists said. Lightning deaths have been falling from about 100 per year in the 1960s and 1970s to 33 per year in the last decade. So far this year 25 people have been killed, NOAA data shows. Brooks said the drop is because of people changing their behavior to be safer in storms and better medical treatment of lightning victims.

BANGLI - Revenue target from tourism sector of Bangli County in 2014 seems difficult to be achieved. Up to October, the revenue generated by the whole tourist attractions managed by the government only reached around IDR 5.2 billion. Actually the government sets the target at IDR 8.4 billion. The Head of Bangli Culture and Tourism Agency, Wayan Adnyana, said that based on the realization, the revenue from the tourism sector in Bangli reached 62.88 percent. The largest revenue contributor was still derived from the levy of admission tickets collected at a few booths. Then, it was followed by the levy at Penglipuran tourism village, Kehen and climbing attraction at Mount Batur which had been managed by the Association of the Mount Batur Climbing Guides (PPPGB). Although the remaining time to achieve the revenue target of IDR 8.4 billion were only one and a half months to go, he admitted to be still optimistic if the target could be achieved by the end of the year. Or at least, the realization of revenue by the end of next year exceeded the achievement of last year, amounting to IDR 7.5 billion. “At least it can exceed the achievement of last year,” he said. Meanwhile, when asked about
the plan of local government to increase the tourism revenue target to IDR 10 billion in the upcoming year, Adnyana remained optimistic. According to him, the increase in revenue target in 2015 would be accompanied by the revision of admission ticket price with the increase of two hundred percent. “We’re very optimistic because the increase in the target will also be accompanied by the changes in ticket price,” he added. As reported previously, the Bangli government planned to raise the price of admission ticket to tourist areas of Kintamani in 2015. As planned, the current ticket price of IDR 10,000 would be increased to IDR 30,000 for foreign travelers and IDR 20,000 for domestic travelers. In addition to planning to raise the ticket price, the Regent of Bangli, Made Gianyar, would also target the tourist arrival to Kintamani to reach 1 million people in a year. NEGARA - Waste disposal into the sea committed by entrepreneur of shrimp breeding ponds owned by foreign enterprise (Korea) at Yeh Kuning village, Jembrana, was complained by residents, Sunday (Nov 16). From the observation at location, the building of fish pond located on the west of melasti (purificatory rite) and nganyut (floating ashes in relation to cremation procession) venue at local village could be found large pipes projecting into the sea. From behind the building surrounded by a high wall emerged two large pipes shored by wooden beams emitting black liquid waste. Even, it exuded pungent smell. Some residents who performed the nganyut procession complained about the pungent smell. Based on information, the pond was a shrimp nursery owned by a Korean who had settled there. It was said the pond was established thirty years ago. “This venue is commonly used to perform nganyut related to cremation ceremony and melasti purificatory rite, while this waste is very disturbing,” said one of the local residents participating in the nganyut procession last Sunday, I.B. Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Twenty years after the 1994 original, “Dumb and Dumber To” opened with $38.1 million at the weekend box office, according to studio estimates Sunday. The Universal sequel debuted almost exactly two decades after the Farrelly brothers first introduced the Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels low-IQ duo. “Dumb and Dumber To” edged out the animated Disney adventure “Big Hero 6,” which took in $36 million in its second week. Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi epic “Interstellar” slid to third in its second week with an estimated $29.2 million. The film continues to blast off overseas, where it took in $106 million over the weekend, with sales particularly boosted by a strong opening in China. The top three films took up the lion’s share of the box office, with the no. 4 film, the romance “Beyond the Lights,” opening with a distant $6.5 million. tariff, so that the inflation would be high. “When there is no price hike in the subsidized fuel, the inflation in November-December alone can increase in the range of 5-6 percent,” he said. Provision of compensation through the help program for the poor by three magic cards such as the Smart Indonesia Card (KIP), Healthy Indonesia Card (KIS) and Prosperous Family Card (KKS), this professor from the Faculty of Economics, Udayana University, considered it was not right on target. It happened because the increase in subsidized fuel price would affect all the people of Indonesia. Realization of the three magic cards provision in the field would not touch all the levels of society. It meant that it had not been evenly distributed to
all the public. Nevertheless, he said, on the other side the fuel price hike would help reduce the state budget and reduced the subsidies all this time enjoyed by particular circles. A total of 80 percent subsidy was received by middle class and above, so that the policy was necessary. “The problem is that it is not made in the right moment. When the fuel price hike is made next February, it is an ideal time because the inflation stays high in January 2015 as the influence of the New Year celebration. So, February is more appropriate,” he advised. According to him, when looking for the ideal magnitude for the fuel price hike, the government actually did not matter if increasing by IDR 3,000 per liter because it was still
providing subsidies from the real economic price. The difference lay in the amount of the next subsidy by the government was lower namely in the range of IDR 1,000 rather than the current fuel subsidy worth IDR 5,000. When comparing to Timor Leste, the price of nonsubsidized gasoline reached IDR 10,000-IDR 11,000 per liter. “So, it does not matter because people will be familiar with the increasingly lower subsidy. In the long term, it will be very good as the fuel will no longer be subsidized. For economic stability, it must be prepared with an infrastructure. For the countries whose fuel is no longer subsidized, it is supported by the infrastructure of good transportation mode,” he said. Continued on page 6
