However, the victim’s wife was not pleased, including when the authority was about to make autopsy, his wife did not allow as the body of her husband would be brought back to his home country,” said the Chief of Klungkung Police. ANOTHER quite unique tradition is shown off by customary village in Buleleng Regency. Three customary villages in Sawan Subdistrict, namely the Kerobokan, Kloncing and Sinabun customary village still maintain their distinctive nyekar tradition carried out by night watch (makemit) on Segara Beach, Kerobokan. It is a variant of pakelem ceremony held at sea. The tradition of night watch on the beach is not only done by the apparatus of customary village or family head, but it can also be done together with family. By and large, this tradition is performed around the full moon in the fourth month in Balinese calendar (around October) and local people call it rahina nadi, or a very auspicious day. Kerobokan customary village, for instance, performed pakelem ceremony or nyekar right on the full moon of the fourth month. Sinabun Village does it the day after full moon, while Keloncing Village takes a different day. On the appointed day, the road of Kerobokan Beach area has been crowded from the morning. Local villagers organizing the night watch ceremony bring some bamboo poles of various sizes. The bamboo will be used to establish a kind of small hut on the beach. Meanwhile, the roof is made of new fabric or the one that has never been used. Similarly, the side walls are made of new fabric. Then, people will sleep or unwind as the initial series of nyekar ceremony. Now and again, after passing the 00:00 p.m. Local Time, residents began to be busy preparing for the pinnacle of nyekar or pakelem procession. Though the time had evolved, people were excited to follow the nyekar procession until the end. However, the development of time had also affected the way the procession went on. Before the existence of a rapid means of transportation, local customary villagers usually went to Kerobokan Beach on foot. Today, people used a means of transportation like car or motorcycle. “Most importantly, the core of the ceremony does not change, only people are getting more practical,” said Mangku Sudirtha. Interestingly, the tradition of night watch on the beach is not only carried out by village apparatus or representative of the family. Occasionally local residents also take their families so the tradition then becomes a series of religious procession and a recreational moment for the family. People coming to location bring along their offerings and dinner to be enjoyed together on the beach. On that account, they are willing to come to the beach early, just to enjoy the beautiful sunset and crashing waves while savoring the dinner brought from the home. PARIS — Former French Socialist Party chief Francois Hollande declared victory Sunday in the party’s presidential primary, urging the left to unite around his bid to unseat embattled conservative Nicolas Sarkozy in elections next year. Hollande, a 57-year-old moderate known more as a behind-thescenes consensus-builder than a visionary, is seen by many as a welcome contrast to the tough-talking, hard-driving Sarkozy. Opinion polls say Hollande is the leftists’ best chance to win the presidency for the first time since 1988. Sunday’s vote for the main oppo-

sition party’s presidential nominee comes at a time when many French citizens are worried about high state debt, cuts to education spending, anemic economic growth and lingering unemployment. With 2.2 million votes counted after Sunday’s run-off voting, the Socialist Party said 56 percent of the ballots were for Hollande and 44

The Philippines said Sunday it was prepared to defend its claims in the South China Sea, but downplayed a plan by Taiwan to deploy missiles in the area. Defence department spokesman Zosimo Jesus Paredes said the country enjoyed good relations with Taiwan and believed its plan to supply missiles to coastguard units in the areas it claims was not a threat to the Philippines. “We cannot dictate on Taiwan on what or what not to do,” Paredes told reporters. “For as long as they don’t occupy what we already occupy, we have no problem. Live and let live.” However, he said Manila was prepared to “defend to the hilt” islets it has already occupied in the Spraltys. He did not elaborate. China claims all of the South China Sea, including the Spratlys, a group of islands and islets believed to sit atop vast oil and mineral reserves. Taiwan, Vietnam, Brunei, the Philippines and Malaysia also lay claim to all or part of the Spratlys. The overlapping claims have been a source of tension in the region, with the United States reiterating a call to all parties last week to peacefully solve the problem following Taiwan’s threat.

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Whirlwind ravages homes in Bitung Antara BITUNG - A strong whirlwind ravaged the homes of people in Girian Indah village, Girian sub-district, Bitung, North Sulawesi on Sunday at 12.30 local time. He said that actually, we have agreed to settle the debts during a meeting on February 12, 2011 with Pertamina and the Asset Guarantor Company (PPA) which was led by the state-owned enterprises (BUMN) minister. The results of hour meeting on August 18, 2011 concluded that Marpati`s accumulative debts amounting to Rp270 billion plus an avtur obligation would get payment priority when the government`s capital participation worth Rp561 billion was disbursed. “This means that institutionally, Merpati`s obligation to Pertimina is guaranteed,” he said.

Heat oil, add spice paste and all other ingredients. Cook over moderate heat for about 5 minutes, then cool. Wash lobsters and leave whole. Bring water to the boil, add lobsters and simmer for 15 minutes. Remove lobsters, plunge in iced water for 1 minutes, then drain and remove meat. Return shells to the pot of water, keeping lobster meat aside. Add spice paste, lemongrass, lime leaves and vinegar to the water with the shells and simmer until 4 cups of stock remain. Add coconut milk and simmer for 10 minutes. Strain stock and return to pan. Add lobster and simmer for 1 minute. Serve garnished with fried shallots and accompanied by white rice. Helpful hints: if using prawns instead of lobster, peel the raw prawns and put prawns shells 4 cups of water. SAN ANTONIO - It’s been said that what the world knows about the United States is what people see in Hollywood movies, and those perceptions could soon become reality in Texas. Those who try to slip across the Rio Grande from Mexico into west Texas may find themselves arrested by newly sworn-in Hudspeth County Sheriff’s Deputy and action film star Steven Seagal. Seagal, currently starring in an A&E Network reality show detailing his experiences as a reserve deputy in New Orleans, contacted County Sheriff Arvin West about his interest in “patrolling the border”, West said. He was sworn in this week for the position in Hudspeth County, which runs along the Rio Grande east of El Paso, West added. Seagal, 59, could not be reached for comment. “Mr. Seagal is not in this for the celebrity or publicity,” West told Reuters. “He has a sincere passion for his country and he wants to do more to help. I think he will make a significant contribution to this office and to our community.” Seagal starred in big-budget films in the 1980s and early 1990s, earning a reputation as an action star in movies like “Above the Law” and “Under Siege.” In the last decade, he has appeared mainly in direct-toDVD, low-budget films while working in law enforcement. TORONTO — A 100-year-old runner became the oldest person to complete a full-distance marathon when he finished the race in Toronto on Sunday. Fauja Singh earned a spot in the Guinness World Records for his accomplishment. It took Singh more than eight hours to cross the finish line — more than six hours after Kenya’s Kenneth Mungara won the event for the fourth straight year — and he was the last competitor to complete the course. But his time wasn’t nearly as remarkable as the accomplishment. Event workers dismantled the barricades along the finish line and took down sponsor banners even as

Singh made his way up the final few hundred yards of the race. Family, friends and supporters greeted Singh when he finished the race. “Beating his original prediction, he’s overjoyed,” his coach and translator Harmander Singh said. “Earlier, just before we came around the (final) corner, he said, ‘Achieving this will be like getting married again.’ “He’s absolutely overjoyed, he’s achieved his lifelong wish.” Sunday’s run was Singh’s eighth marathon — he ran his first at age 89 — and wasn’t the first time he set a record. In the 2003 Toronto event, he set the mark in the 90-plus category, finishing the race in 5 hours, 40 minutes and 1 second.

And on Thursday in Toronto, Singh broke world records for runners older than 100 in eight different distances ranging from 100 meters to 5,000 meters. The 5-foot-8 Singh said he’s hopeful his next project will be participating in the torch relay for the 2012 London Games. He carried the torch during the relay for the 2004 Athens Games.

Study blames global warming for shrinking species Associated Press Writer WASHINGTON — From the mighty polar bear to the tiny house sparrow, many of Earth’s species appear to be shrinking in size, a new study reports. And the authors think it’s probably due to global warming, a little like wool sweaters that shrink when washed in hot water. But other experts say that conclusion goes too far, blaming global warming for what may be natural changes. The new research was published online Sunday in the journal Nature Climate Change. It’s based on a review of other studies and found that 38 of 85 animal and plant species showed a documented reduction in size over decades, including a type of Scottish sheep that is 5

percent smaller than in 1985. Those studies looked at species over different time periods and in varying numbers. The shrinking victims, according to the study, include cotton, corn, strawberries, bay scallops, shrimp, crayfish, carp, Atlantic salmon, herring, frogs, toads, iguanas, hooded robins, red-billed gulls, California squirrels, lynx and wood rats. Two years ago, Scottish re-

searchers made news with the shrinking sheep study. Several studies have shown that polar bears, which rely on sea ice during the summer, also are not as big. And this latest study said the house sparrow’s weight has dropped by one-seventh from 1950 to 1990. A bird called the graceful warbler showed a 26 percent weight drop during the same time period. “There is a trend in a number

of organisms across the board from plants to big vertebrates getting smaller,” said study coauthor Jennifer Sheridan, a biology researcher at the University of Alabama. “The theory is as things get warmer they don’t need to grow as large.” Most of these animals are cold-blooded so the warmer the weather, the faster their metabolism is and the more calories they burn, Sheridan said. There’s a biological law, called Bergmann’s rule, that says that as it gets colder, animals get bigger. This is the unwritten flip side of it, she said. But Yoram Yom-Tov, a zoolo-

gist at Tel Aviv University whose studies Sheridan used in her research, said many species are shrinking, and you can’t blame global warming exclusively. “Changes in body size are a normal phenomenon,” Yom-Tov wrote in an email. “When conditions are favorable, they increase in size or reproduce at higher rates, and when conditions are deteriorating, they do the opposite. I think that most species will adapt to climate change and survive. No need for alarm.” And Stanford biologist Terry Root, an expert in climate change, said the study’s conclusions “seem kind of far-fetched.”

On Sunday, IndyCar drivers got a harsh reminder when the worst happened to one of their own. Two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon died when his car got caught up in a 15-car pileup, sailed over another vehicle and smashed into a catch fence at IndyCarâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s season-ending race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Things happen in this kind of racing,â&#x20AC;? said Wade Cunningham, also caught up in the wreck. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s so close. Not much room for error. I was near the front of what caused all this, so Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not thrilled about it. At this point, whose fault it was is kind of immaterial.â&#x20AC;? Red Bull expects closer race in 2012 Red Bull Racing expects a much stronger challenge from its rivals next year, with team principal Christian Horner thinking its back-to-back title success will have ‘upset’ the opposition. The Milton Keynes-based outfit delivered its second successive title double at the Korean Grand Prix, with its clinching of the constructors’ crown coming just one week after Sebastian Vettel won the drivers’ championship. And, as the team now switches its focus to 2012, Horner says his team does not expect it will be able to repeat the level of dominance that it produced this year. “It never gets easier that is for sure, it would be foolish to underestimate the likes of Ferrari,” said Horner, when asked by AUTOSPORT about the challenge his team will face gunning for a third consecutive title in 2012. “They are a phenomenal team with tremendous pedigree, as are the likes of McLaren, the likes of Mercedes-Benz. “But we are not foolish enough or arrogant enough to think that this kind of performance is normal. It is abnormal, and it takes a super human effort to try and achieve. “For sure our competitors are going to be pushing hard over the winter. To do it [win the title] once they can probably tolerate, to do it twice probably upsets a little. But for sure we have got continuity

in all areas and that is very important.” Red Bull Racing’s technical chief Adrian Newey elected to skip the Korean Grand Prix so he could return to the factory to ramp up efforts on next year’s car And Horner says that the outfit must make the most of the limited track running opportunities it has before RB8 hits the track next February. “The focus has to start moving towards next year,” he said. “We have less than four months to design and build a completely new car, which is why Adrian elected not to attend this race. He is busy back in the UK focused on RB8. “The remaining races are the only track time other than a young driver test between now and when the new car is born, so we will look to learn everything we can out of the track with the time we have available and that means pushing right up until the chequered flag in Brazil.”Horner also paid tribute to the efforts of his staff this year in delivering a second world title in a manner that was even better than its first. “It is very special because when you do it for the first time, there is all the emotion of having achieved it and having done it for the first time.
