Indonesia orders overhaul of drug agency after fake vaccine scandal

The Food and Drugs Agency JAKARTA - Indonesia on Friday ordered an immediate overhaul of the food and drug monitoring agency, a month after (FDA) has come under particular police uncovered a syndicate selling fake imported child vaccines fire after officials said they were aware of the fake vaccine problem to hospitals, pharmacies and clinics over the past decade. Ngurah Alit Wiraputra, agreed when the concern of the government and private sector are also needed in the agricultural development. Agricultural subsidies should be given as much as possible by the government. He even expected that allocation of funds for agriculture in the regional budget could be improved. “Usually in the provincial government, the budget for the increase in agricultural subsidies is very small and I have heard from the head of the agricultural agency if the allocation of funds is indeed very small for the sector. How can farmers grow if they are not given incentives? At least, the government set up a seed,” he said. Wiraputra added that farmers would be willing to continuously

participate in agricultural activities when receiving greater support from the government. Likewise, private sector is ready to purchase agricultural products of farmers. He ensured that private sector is ready to support the post-harvest activities as well as motivate young people wishing to farm. “To draw the interest of our young generations to farm, they should be adequately motivated that becoming a farmer is no longer dirty. Being a modern farmer can be clean and looks prestigious. As overseas, farmers indeed look nice and have high purchasing power,” he explained. On the other hand, added Wiraputra, the agriculture in Bali should be developed with the concept of the desa kala patra or adjusted to local condition. A given area should produce a specific agricultural product, or what the so-called “One Village, One Product.” So, one village, for example, develops a superior product only. “How can we realize this? Yesterday I was visited by Consul General of Japan doing things that we have not done and being conducted by the Faculty of Agriculture, Udayana University, namely researching our land. Discussion on agriculture has been made since the elementary school and Bali has subak (irrigation cooperative) and we cannot find this elsewhere. Down and dirty! South Korea’s most popular festival

SEOUL - A picture of a man being splashed in the face with a wave of mud marks the start of the Mud Festival in Boryeong in South Korea. Mud taken from the Boryeong mud flats, 200km south of Seoul, South Korea, and driven over to the Daecheon beach area, is turned into a Mud wonderland and is considered to be rich in minerals used to manufacture cosmetics in the country. The festival was originally conceived as a marketing tool for Boryeong mud cosmetics in 1998 although over time has become a popular past time for visitors and locals in the area. Six images represent some of the highlights of the festival which spans across two weeks in July including wrestling, mud pools and people painting their faces with the

nutrient rich sludge. Marking its 18th anniversary on July 15 the festival was hoped to allow people to learn more about the mud and the cosmetics that are made from it. Although the festival was not without controversy, when a group 230 school children that attended the festival in 2009 developed a skin rash after contact with the mud. But despite the backlash the festival continues and has been chosen the ultimate destination for those enjoying their summer in South Korean this year. The festival will run from July 15 to July 24 and has been described as Korea’s ‘most popular summer festivals’ hoping to draw in another crowd of over a million people to Daecheon Beach. (IBP/net)

GIANYAR - Many factors have caused grievances of people, so that they are reluctant to entrust their children to be educated at the SDN 2 Keramas elementary school such as the condition of school buildings, management up to the individual teachers. In the meantime, the Education Agency is still making an investigation and finds a solution to this problem. At Keramas village, there are four public schools and one private school. The SDN 2 Keramas located at Gelgel hamlet is geographically quite close to other schools such as the SDN 1 Keramas at Lebah hamlet and SDN 4 Keramas at Dia hamlet, Keramas village. Hesitation of students’ parent to send their children to this school is quite reasonable. They include the quite alarming condition of the

buildings and the lack of library and sport facilities. Gelgel hamlet chief, Keramas village, Putu Agus Sutanaya, said on Wednesday (Jul. 13) that the SDN 2 Keramas that has not got new students to date is a protracted problem. His authority had repeatedly made an approach to the people regarding the school condition, but they still refuse due to a number of reasons. “When making an approach to

residents, they gave a number of reasons. For example, a student of Gelgel hamlet has elder brother or sister having attended elementary school at the SDN 1 or SDN 4 Keramas, their younger one will surely request to attend the same school. At the same time, it is impossible for their parents to let their children attend school alone at the SDN 2 Keramas,” he explained. Another reason of parents is that some of the former teachers at the SDN 2 Keramas were not trusted by local residents. The teachers did not give maximal attention to students because they were busy with their personal businesses. Finally students’ parents were furious because

TABANAN - Although the dissemination on HIV has been frequently held, discrimination of people with HIV in Tabanan remains to happen. Some time ago, people in Tabanan even did not want to bathe one of the residents known to be infected with HIV. His body was placed under the bale gede (pavilion) and on the bale gede as it should be. To resolve this issue, the AIDS Mitigation Commission (KPA) of Tabanan in cooperation with the Tabanan Health Agency came down to the field and provided insight for people that HIV transmission is not easy and not contagious just by touching or bathing the corpse of HIV sufferer.

It was stated by the Secretary of KPA Tabanan, I Ketut Randem, Wednesday (Jul. 13). According to him, such discrimination incident does not only occur once in Tabanan, especially when bathing corpse. He added that HIV can only transmit through fluid exchange like blood and the most commonly happening today is through semen or sexual intercourse. Not only that, the current HIV patients commencing to be suffered by productive age range of 20-29 years amounting to 266 people and aged 30-39 years amounting to 282 people indicate that school children are also in the danger of HIV infection due to having early sexual intercourse or other risk factor such as drug use. “The age range of 20-29 years can be assumed to have been infected with HIV five years earlier or at school age. KLUNGKUNG - Cremation season has brought in a blessing for bade tower maker and sarcophagus means in Klungkung. This condition is also experienced by Nyoman Sudiasa. The man opening his business at Takmung village admitted to be flooded with the order during the cremation season this time. During normal days, he only gets two orders, but now he can get up to ten orders.

To do the whole bade and sarcophagus means coming to him, he admitted to be unable to accomplish them alone. So, to complete the order on time, he takes at least 12 artisans at his workshop. The main raw materials used for the making of bade tower and sarcophagus means are the wood of ylangylang, silk tree and ferry silk. He said that apart from the mainland territory in Klungkung, the order of bade tower and sarcophagus means like ox, wadah and others also come from the region of Nusa Penida. Moreover, he also frequently receives orders from outside the district such as Karangasem, Negara to Lombok. He sets the price at IDR 10 million for each unit of bade tower, ox-style sarcophagus at IDR 4-5 million and wadah at IDR 6 million per unit. “For a full package, I usually sell for IDR 31 million,” he explained. NEGARA - A resident of Taman hamlet, Tuwed, died of rabies positive case. Ni Komang Sastrawati, 36, was bitten by a dog few months ago that later on known to have been infected by rabies. Husband of the victim, I Gede Sukayasa, 40, said on Friday (Jul. 15) that his wife was bitten by a dog and already taken to Melaya health center. However, during the treatment she did not get anti-rabies vaccine (VAR). From his confession to reporters, at that time his wife was checked up to the health center because of getting fever. Having been checked, his wife was allowed to go home. A few moments later, the victim got fever again and was eventually taken to Negara Hospital. After that, the victim was referred to Sanglah Hospital on the same day. When arriving at Sanglah Hospital, the victim was known to have died and positive to rabies. His wife was actually bitten by a dog early April. At that time, the victim went to Berawan Tangi hamlet, Tuwed. After bitten by the dog at victim’s leg instep, she was taken to health center on the same day. The wound was already cleaned and bandaged. However, she was not given anti-rabies vaccine. He was disappointed because he was just let know after his wife was indicated to be infected by rabies at Sanglah Hospital. In the meantime, Chief of the Jembrana Health

Agency, I Putu Suasta, justified that clinically the victim’s death was declared positive to rabies. According to Suasta, the victim is the third victim that died of rabies in Jembrana since 2008. In 2016, there have been 1,415 cases of dog bites. Of the thousands of cases, it was the only victim bite at Tuwed that could not be overcome. Allegedly there was lost control on the victim and the biting dog. From the data at the health center, the victim was bitten by a local pet dog on April 19. MEDAN - The Indonesian Ministry of Transportation has instructed operators and management of airports in the country to boost airport security to prevent any eventuality, including smuggling of goods. On the sidelines of his visit to Kualanamu airport in Medan, North Sumatra, Transportation Minister Ignasius Jonan said he had issued a number of instructions and requested measures to be taken to increase security at airports.

He hoped community members would help support the governments efforts by reporting to the authorities anything suspicious. “They must report to the security authorities if they see anything suspicious,” he said. Erdogan supporters stand guard as crushed coup bid shakes Turkey

ISTANBUL - Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan’s supporters rallied in public squares, at Istanbul airport and outside his palace overnight in a show of defiance after a failed coup attempt killed at least 265 people and raised expectations of a heavy crackdown on dissent. Rebel soldiers used tanks, attack helicopters and fighter jets to try to topple Erdogan on Friday night, strafing parliament and the intelligence headquarters in Ankara while seizing a bridge and surrounding the airport in Istanbul. PARIS - The man behind the truck attack that killed at least 84 people celebrating Bastille Day in the French city of Nice had recently been radicalised, French Prime Minister Manuel Valls said in remarks published on Sunday. Thursday night’s attack in the Riviera city of Nice plunged France into new grief and fear just eight months after gunmen killed 130 people in Paris. Those attacks, and one in Brussels four months ago, shocked Western Europe, already anxious over security challenges from mass immigration, open borders and pockets of Islamist radicalism. Authorities have yet to produce evidence that the 31 year-old Tunisian Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel, shot dead by police, had any links to Islamic State, which claimed the attack, but Valls said there was no doubt on the assailant’s motives. “The investigation will establish the facts, but we know now that the killer was radicalised very quickly,” Valls said in an interview with Sunday newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche. “The claim on Saturday morning by Islamic State and the fast radicalisation of the killer confirms the Islamist nature of this attack.” Officials said on Saturday that people questioned by police had indicated that he had undergone a rapid transformation from someone with no apparent interest in religion. Relative and friends interviewed in Nice painted a picture of a man who at least until recently drank alcohol, smoked marijuana and according to French media even ate pork, behaviour that would be unlikely in a devout Muslim. Those photos of Messi soaking up the sun in a bathing suit have spawned several jokes on social media about how he must be “suffering.” The spokesman for Barcelona’s board of directors, Josep Vives, has defended both Messi and the club’s campaign. “In similar cases, we haven’t seen attacks like those Leo Messi is receiving,” Vives said. “It’s obvious that we can’t tolerate this derision of our player. “We have found ourselves in a controversy because it appears that FC Barcelona is defending tax fraud. What we are defending is a person that is being treated unjustly.” Besides his club, the Spanish league’s president has also said he believes Messi is innocent. “I hope that the Supreme Court revokes the ruling because Messi is not a delinquent and shouldn’t be found guilty,” league president Javier Tebas said. “I have interpreted the campaign as meaning that Messi shouldn’t worry, and so he knows that his club is with him.” Messi is not the only player to have gotten into trouble over taxes. LIPPSTADT — Bayern Munich barely won and lost winger Arjen Robben to injury in Carlo Ancelotti’s debut as coach on Saturday.
