Another delay in Justin Bieber’s Florida case Associated Press

MIAMI — Justin Bieber’s lawyers and Florida prosecutors said Wednesday they need more time to work out a possible plea deal on charges that the pop star drove under the influence and resisted arrest. Assistant State Attorney David Gilbert and Bieber attorney Mark Shapiro asked for an additional three weeks. Miami-Dade County Judge William Altfield reset the matter for Aug. 5. Gilbert said at a brief hearing the two sides would inform Altfield on that date how the plea negotiations are progressing “and set a trial date, if necessary.” He gave no other details, and Shapiro also would not get into specifics. Bieber did not attend the hearing. “It’s pretty much status quo,” Shapiro said. Bieber was arrested early Jan. 23

in Miami Beach after what police described as an illegal street race between Bieber’s rented Lamborghini and a Ferrari driven by a friend, R&B singer Khalil Amir Sharieff. Neither was charged with drag racing. Alcohol breath tests found Bieber’s level below Florida’s 0.02 limit for underage drivers but urine tests showed the presence of marijuana and the anti-anxiety drug Xanax in his system. Bieber was also charged with resisting arrest and driving on an expired license. Sharieff is also charged with DUI. Earlier this month, Bieber resolved

another criminal case by pleading no contest to a misdemeanor vandalism charge for throwing eggs at a neighbor’s house in Los Angeles. In that case, Bieber agreed to pay more than $80,000 in damages and meet a number of other conditions. Bieber is also charged in Toronto with assaulting a limo driver in late December. His lawyers have said he is not guilty in that case. Back in Miami, Bieber is being sued by a photographer who says he was roughed up while snapping pictures of the singer outside a recording studio. The Canadian-born Bieber shot to stardom at age 15, after initially gaining notice through YouTube videos. He was nominated for two Grammy Awards for his 2010 full-length album debut “My World 2.0,” but his popularity has begun to wane.

Rooms growth surpass tourist arrivals

DENPASAR - The growth of hotel rooms in Bali is increasingly unmanageable. Even, it is now predicted to have surpassed the amount of tourist arrivals. This condition has a negative impact on occupancy rates. Room occupancy of star hotels in May 2014 reached an average of 61.01 percent, down 0.27 points from the previous month. Meanwhile, the non-star hotel occupancy rate during the same period only reached an average of 29.64 percent. Secretary General of the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) of Badung Chapter, Gusti Kade Sutawa, also acknowledged if the hotel growth, especially in Southern Bali, exceeded the growth of tourist arrivals. This condition was reflected by the declining occupancy rate annually. “When having the intention (to suppress the growth of room—Ed), we will surely be able to. Simply calculate first the carrying capacity of Bali, especially Badung. If the result is enough, then it must be stopped, as in the UK if people want to establish a hotel in an area, then the government directly answers that it cannot because the region is full,” said Kade Sutawa when confirmed. According to him, Bali did not require a lot of hotels to be built because such condition could make the Bali tourism cheap and would make the burden heavier. Currently,

Not to mention, we are also competing against Thailand and Singapore that sell cheap tourism,” he said. The Head of Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Bali Chapter, Panusunan Siregar, also admitted if the average length of stay of foreign and Indonesian travelers at star hotels in Bali in May 2014 reached 3.36 days. These figures were down compared to the average length of stay in April 2014 reaching 3.53 days. “Overall, the average length of stay of Indonesian travelers in May 2014 reached 3.08 days, much shorter than the average length of stay of foreign travelers reaching 3.5 days,” he concluded. As has been known, the total amount of accommodation in Bali in 2010 reached 2,190 units with 45,408 rooms. They consisted of 158 star hotels and 20,558 rooms, 1,036 units of budget hotels with a total of 20,410 rooms and 996 cottages with a total of 4,440 rooms. Until 2011, there were 55,000 hotel rooms and 1,658 restaurants with 81 thousand seats. Dominantly, the tourist accommodations are situated in Southern Bali, namely in Badung, Gianyar and Denpasar. Suwung Kauh residents haunted by reclamation impact

DENPASAR - Aside from residents of Tanjung Benoa, Kuta and Sidakarya that are worrying about the impact of Benoa Bay reclamation, the residents of Suwung Kauh are also experiencing the same worries. The struggles to reject the reclamation continue to be done. One of them is by installing jumbo-size billboard on the side of Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai, Suwung Kauh, South Denpasar, Wednesday (Jul 16). The billboard read ‘Do Not Sink Us Mr. Yudhoyono, Bali Rejects Reclamation and Please Cancel Presidential Regulation No.51/2014.’ hours later the billboard was taken and the officers said it would be taken to Denpasar Police,” he added. Related to the incident, local residents felt to have been intimidated, whereas the installation of billboard was to convey their fears. Meanwhile, along the road there were many billboards of presidential candidate and mass organization, but were not dismantled. “It is the people’s aspiration and Mr. SBY must see it. We do not know why the officers suddenly dismantled it unilaterally. We had protested. If it’s the matter of permit, this territory belongs to our village. The incident made people more worried because the seawater would be getting higher if the Benoa Bay would be backfilled.

“Moreover, the Benoa Bay is the estuary of five rivers in Bali. If backfilled, where does the river water flow to? Balinese people will be impacted. This is the reason why people here reject the reclamation. Hopefully, the reclamation can be cancelled and we make the

NEGARA - Cacao drying machine provided to a number of subak (irrigation cooperative) organizations in Jembrana by the Ministry of Agriculture was admitted to be less effective by the Jembrana Agriculture, Plantation and Livestock Agency. Today, there is a new emerging technology such as solar dryer that is more effective and has

been used by a number of subak organizations. It is the trigger why the assistance of the machine originating in the state budget is rarely used by farmers. The Head of Jembrana Agriculture, Plantation and Livestock Agency, I Ketut Wiratma, said on Wednesday (Jul 16) that his party recognized the drying machine was less desirable by cacao farmers. It happened because the quality was not so good and the

dryness of the cacao bean did not reach the core. According to him, such technology was used in 2008 and some Subak Abian organizations producing cacao received the machine. “When used in rainy season, the drying machine is less effective. So, farmers prefer to dry their cacao bean on the floor,” he said. Later, another technology emerged, namely solar dryer considered to be more effective. So,

the drying machine was getting rarely used. From information obtained, the dryness did not get to the core of cacao beans and the results exuded the smell of fuel of the machine. On that account, the machine was considered ineffective and farmers preferred to choose manual drying. One of the unused drying machines was at Subak Abian Sumber Urip, Pengeragoan vil-

lage, Pekutatan subdistrict. At this subak, the drying machine was left in the subak meeting hall and rarely used. Chief of Subak Abian Sumber Urip, I Made Sunantra, confirmed that the assistance from the state budget was rarely used because the resulting quality was not the same as the drying on the floor. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

The secret of its success: placing huge orders for top-selling items like socks, tops and jeans and passing on the savings to shoppers. Forever 21 as well as players like Gap, American Eagle and Aeropostale, it could be a game changer. “It’s a big if, and that’s how investors have got to look at this,” said John Bason, finance director of Primark’s parent Associated British Foods, which is 55 percent owned by the Weston family. “The bull case is it is absolutely a step change, suddenly the population opportunity for Primark has just doubled - if it works. If it doesn’t work then Primark is a western European brand.” O’Donoghue thinks the move to the United States will be helped by the fact the north east of the country has a similar climate and strong cultural links to Britain and Ireland, but said Primark was also keen to adapt to a new market. “We are cautious. We take our time to learn. We want a U.S. business, not a Spanish business, not an Irish business,” she said at a store opening in Madrid in May.

MANGUPURA - The development of tourism in Bali is now coupled with a number of problems such as the growth of uncontrolled hotel room. Ultimately, it has an impact on the land conversion, annexation of coastline, violation of green belt and so on. Therefore, Bali needs a commitment in managing and directing the tourism development with single-island management. It was revealed by the lecturer of Tourism Faculty of Udayana University, I Putu Anom, when asked for his confirmation, Wednesday (Jul 16). He said the policy on tourism development all this time still controlled by county/municipal government made them small kings. cial level have been ideal, in the execution it is very difficult to coordination with the existing rules in the counties and municipality because of local autonomy in the region,” he said. NEW YORK — It’s not easy to find models with disabilities in ads for the fashion and beauty industry — unless you look in the Nordstrom catalog. The company has been using models with disabilities since 1997 and continues the tradition in its annual July catalog, which kicks off the upscale retailer’s largest event of the year with preview discounts of new fashions for fall. This summer’s Nordstrom Inc. catalog includes among others a woman in a wheelchair modeling boots and a man with a prosthetic leg modeling Nike running shoes. Hiring professional models with disabilities has become so much a part of the Seattle-based company’s DNA that its regular customers may not even realize how unusual it is. “Identifying companies that utilize models or actresses with disabilities has been like finding a needle in a haystack,” said Meg O’Connell, a partner at the consulting firm Global Disability Inclusion. Nordstrom, she added, “is a leader in this space and has been a long-standing supporter of disability inclusion not only in their advertising but also in employment and accessibility in their stores.”

Aside from weather condition, the method of catching and fishing equipment in North Bali are still traditional and not using proper catching innovation. This condition often results in the production decline in the fish catch. Addressing this issue, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) through the Center for Fish Catch Development (BBPPI) Semarang equipped fishermen with the techniques and innovation of catching.

It was revealed in the Technological Guidance on Innovation Results held by the BBPPI at Ranggon Sunset Singaraja, Wednesday (Jul 16). The activity was attended by dozens of participants consisting of fishermen and field scouts (PPL). It was opened by the Head of Buleleng Fisheries and Maritime Affairs, Nyoman Sutrisna, accompanied by the Section Head of Publication and Documentation of the BBPPI Semarang, Sugiyarto. Sugiyarto said that Buleleng was a coastal area in Indonesia having the potential for a sizeable fishing. Moreover, local fishermen had operated Inka Mina fishing vessel with engine capacity of 30 gross tons (GT). To provide with technique and innovation of fish catching, the BBPPI held technical guidance to fishermen and field scouts in the circles of the Buleleng Fisheries and Maritime Affairs. Thus, fishermen had innovation in improving their catching production. “Potential of Buleleng is quite large and local fishermen have been operating Inka Mina fishing vessel. Well, to provide technical guidance and innovation on fish catch, we hold this technical guidance in the hope that fishermen can increase innovation and improve the produc-

tivity of fish catch,” he said. On the other hand, Sugiyarto said the condition of marine environment, especially in the area of fish aggregating device (FAD) mounted by fishermen, showed degradation in quality. This condition led to decline in fish populations or fishing grown tending to quite deep area. It happened due to several factors such as the lacking of proper fish catch techniques and the use of chemicals. To prevent these adverse conditions, the BBPPI gave some innovations such as fish aggregating device. This multistoried fish house resembling a ‘fish apartment’ had been operated by fishermen in some coastal areas in Indonesia and it needed low cost. Another innovation was the use of fishing light attractor (lacuda) functioned to stimulate fish population on the fish congregate installed. In addition, the BBPPI Semarang also invented special fishing rod and net for catching squid. “We will teach this innovation here and hopefully this innovation can help fishermen to increase the production of their fishing,” he explained. Meanwhile, the Head of Buleleng Fisheries and Maritime Affairs, Nyoman Sutrisna, said the environmental condition of fish catch in

Buleleng was still well preserved. However, due to bad weather condition and fisherman catch patterns were still limited to only oneday sailing, the fish production needed to be increased. To that end, the technical guidance by the innovation of the BBPPI was expected to provide additional insight and improve the human resources of fishermen to increase the results of their catch. “Condition of the seven coastal territories in our region remains well preserved. However, our fishermen are only able to go to sea for one day and some of their innovations are still traditional. Now, with the innovation of the BBPPI, we expect to ramp up the production of our fishermen,” he explained. Similar opinion was disclosed by a member of Sumber Sari fishermen group from Sumberkima (Gerokgak), Putu Srinata. He admitted that so far the catch production decreased slightly compared to usual days. It happened due to adverse weather condition. Weather condition affected the population of fish that could be captured from the FADs installed. For instance, these days he could catch fish maximally 6 to 7 tons for once departure. If the weather permitted, the catch could reach 10 tons. “Now, the fish catch decreases. Probably, it is caused by weather condition and our FADs are damaged, so they need to be fixed. BANGKOK — Thailand’s military government gave permission for former premier Yingluck Shinawatra to travel overseas for the first time since they overthrew her government in May, a spokesman said on Thursday. Thai media speculated that Yingluck, accompanied by her son, will go to France to celebrate the birthday of her brother, Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted in a 2006 coup and fled overseas in 2008 to avoid a corruption conviction. Thaksin turns 65 on July 26. The junta agreed to Yingluck’s request to leave Thailand on a personal trip to Europe from July 20 to Aug. 10 since she “has not violated any orders of the NCPO or any agree-

ments, being the ban from politics or the ban on overseas travels” and “has given good cooperation all along,” said junta spokesman Col. Winthai Suvaree. Yingluck, along with other former Cabinet ministers, were summoned and held briefly by the military after they took power on May 22. The bill offers working children safeguards, they say. “Child labor already exists in Bolivia and it’s difficult to fight it. Rather than persecute it, we want to protect the rights and guarantee the labor security of children,” said Sen. Adolfo Mendoza, one of the bill’s sponsors. Under the legislation, 10-year-olds will be able to work as long as they are under parental supervision and also attend school. It sets 12 as the minimum age for a child to work under contract. Ultimately, the police investigating the case found Kardi Ahmad who was back and forth around Jalan Kartika Plaza, Kuta, Badung, approximately at 9:00 p.m. The officers did not waste the opportunity to immediately arrest the culprit. “When about to be arrested, the suspect was looking for prey. Even, when arrested, the suspect was found bringing a sharp weapon,” he said. The suspect along with his sharp weapon in the form of a knife and folding knife was directly secured and taken to Kuta Police station. Besides, police also seized a Yamaha Jupiter MX motorcycle with false license plate DK 7348 AF. When interrogated, the suspect claimed to be a recidivist who had been sent to jail twice. “He is a recidivist of the same case,” he explained. Jaja gadang tain temuati is one of the traditional cakes of community in Bali. It is called jaja gadang tain temuati because it is green (gadang) and has the shape of small round worm excrement (tain temuati). This very tender and sweet cake exudes a very typical flavor. Moreover, it is very safe to consume because the ingredients and coloring agent are made of organic substance. The main ingredient is rice flour mixed with green leaf extract produced by daun suji or dracaena leaf. It is used to make the cake look greenish as well as engender a delicious flavor, and fragrance. To serve the cake, it is put onto a small dish and then sprinkled with grated coconut and brown sugar sauce. On days of yore, the cake was presented with a tekor (dish-shaped banana leaf). This cake is usually served when people held grandiose religious ceremonies (engaging villagers). But now, the traditional cake is very rare. Aside from being difficult and complicated preparation, the ingredient in use is also of selected rice processed manually. Preparations: first of all, the selected rice is soaked with clean water for about 6 hours. After that, the rice is made into flour by means of crushing. The flour is then clenched into the shape of balls. Then, steam all the batters until cooked or for 15 minutes. Take out the cooked flour and then mixed with the extract of dracaena leaf and give a small amount of starch to make it sticky. Unlike in the past, to make the batter sticky people usually used cassava. Later on, the flour batter is crushed and kneaded until refined. PARIS — French troops are still in Mali a year and a half after they were sent there for a targeted operation against extremists. And instead of leaving, they’re about to expand their mission to fighting terrorism from the Atlantic coast to the Mediterranean. That’s because the region’s terrorist problem hasn’t gone away: French troops merely dispersed Mali’s al-Qaida-linked militants, and their potential ties with Nigerian militant group Boko Haram are of increasing concern to the French government. The redeployment of 3,000 French troops in five of its former colonies across northwest Africa is expected to become official in the coming days. Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian arrived Wednesday in Mali, and President Francois Hollande is starting a three-day visit to Ivory Coast, Niger and Chad on Thursday. Africans have mixed feelings about French soldiers setting up camp long-term. Some in Mali see it as a neo-colonial power grab, while others feel that the French are only extending the mission because they failed to finish the job they started in January 2013. “A sovereign country should not accept the presence of foreign troops to assure its security. French authorities say al-Qaida’s North Africa branch, with fighters scattered around the region, is the main threat to French targets at home and around the world. MOSCOW — President Vladimir Putin on Thursday lamented the latest round of U.S. sanctions against Russia, saying they will stalemate bilateral relations and hurt not only Russian but also American businesses. Russia’s benchmark MICEX was down 2.6 percent in early afternoon trading Thursday upon news of the sanctions while Russia’s biggest oil company, Rosneft, was nearly 5 percent down. Putin’s comments came hours after President Barack Obama announced broader sanctions against Russia, targeting two major energy firms including Rosneft, a pair of powerful financial institutions, eight weapons firms and four individuals. The increased U.S. economic pressure is designed to end the insurgency in eastern Ukraine that is widely believed to be backed by the Kremlin. The U.S. penalties, however, stopped short of the most stringent actions the West has threatened, which would fully cut off key sectors of Russia’s oil-dependent economy. But officials said those steps were still on the table if Russia fails to abide by the West’s demands to stop its support for the pro-Russia insurgents who have destabilized eastern Ukraine. The insurgents have been fighting government troops in eastern Ukraine for four months now in a conflict that the U.N. says has killed over 400 people and has displaced tens of thousands. The conflict took off shortly after Russia annexed the mostly Russianspeaking Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea. In televised comments Thursday, Putin said the sanctions are “driving into a corner” relations between the two nations as well as the interests of American companies and “the long-term national interests of the U.S. government and people.” Putin warned Washington that the sanctions will backlash against American companies working in Russia. The most noticeable companies on the list are Rosneft and Russia’s largest independent gas producer, Novatek. Both are now barred from getting long-term loans from U.S. entities. Moscow-based investment bank SberbankCIB said in a note to investors that Russian companies cannot replace long-term loans from the U.S. immediately. “While Asian and Middle Eastern money can step in to fill the gap, we expect that this will take time,” the note said, adding that borrowing will also cost more. JAKARTA - Former deputy governor of Bank Indonesia Budi Mulya was sentenced on Wednesday to 10 years imprisonment by the anti corruption court with a fine of Rp500 million or an additional jail term of 5 months. The court found Budi guilty of corruption in granting short term loan facility (FPJP) to scandal hit Bank Century and declaring the the scandal hit lender as a failed bank with systemic impact in 2008. Earlier the prosecutor demanded a 17 years imprisonment with a fine of Rp800 million and a compensation of Rp1 billion or additional jail terms of 8 months and three years respectively for Budi. Presiding judge Aviantara said Budi Mulya approved the short term loan facility not with good intention but for own benefit and to save a fund of a foundation (YKKBI) of the central bank employees deposited at Bank Century. The foundation had Rp83 billion deposited at the bank, before it collapsed in 2008. The foundation was one of the banks clients whose fund was returned by the bank using the short term loan facility of Rp689.39 billion. The court also found Budi guilty of receiving a loan of Rp1 billion from Robert Tantular one of the bank owners, after approving the short term loan facility. The court said Budi Mulya caused a loss of Rp8.5 trillion in state fund

including the short term loan facility and Rp6.7 trillion in bail out fund by the state owned Deposit Insurance Agency (LPS). The government defended the granting of the FPJP and the determination of Bank Century as a failed bank saying allowing the bank to collapse could trigger run on bank amid the global financial turbulence in 2008. The House of Representatives, however, decided the bail out illegal, a decision that led to legal investigation by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK). KPK has also questioned Vice President Boediono, who was then governor of the central bank, which facilitated the bail out fund. The Supreme Audit Agency (BPK) said there had been malfeasance committed by related officials in granting the short term loan facility by the central bank. The decision to declare Bank Century a failed bank potential to trigger systemic was given the reason of the

government for the granting of the bail out fund. The short term loan facility was granted when Bank Century had only a capital adequacy ratio of 2.02 percent much below the minimum limit of 8 percent making the bank not entitled to the facility. Bank Indonesia, however, changed its own regulation to allow the bank to receive the facility. Observers said the bank was bailed out not for the sake of the bank but to recover the funds of big depositors among the government supporters ahead of the presidential election in 2009. The bank collapsed after being robbed by its owners who drained it of cash including funds belonging to its depositors. Some of the owners fled the country.

KPU claims 98.53 pct of c1 forms already uploaded Antara

JAKARTA - The General Elections Commission (KPU) had reported that 98.53 percent of C1 forms recording votes cast at polling stations have been uploaded at www.kpu.go.id, Commissioner Ferry Kurnia Rizkiyansyah said here on Tuesday. “A total of 98.53 percent of C1 forms have been scanned and transferred to our system of information. The principle is we are transparent with regard to C1 form-uploading activity. People can view the forms. That is solid proof of the vote-counting process,” he said. He noted that with the scanning of C1 forms, the general public could verify whether errors had been committed or irregularities had happened as part of their contribution to recapitulation process. “If they observe any irregularities, we hope the public will report, so we could immediately follow that up in the field. Do not arrive at conclusions without crosschecking,” he said. KPU commended the people for giving inputs and reports about irregularities found in C1 forms uploaded in its official website. With regard to the complaints, he appealed to the public not to generalize the issue for all C1 forms from hundreds of thousands of polling stations. “The public must understand that the process followed at the low levels have conformed to the procedures. So, they must not generalize the case. Be proportionate,” he said. The KPU chief, Husni Kamil Manik, meanwhile pointed out that the C1 scanning process in the presidential election has been faster than in the legislative elections on April 9. “Progress in speed is evident now than in the earlier legislative elections. Six days after the presidential election 90 percent forms have already been uploaded, while in the same period in the earlier legislative elections it was 80 percent,” he said.

CILEGON, Banten - Agriculture Minister Suswono accompanied by regional officials seized and destroyed 7.4 tons of illegal swine meat in Cilegon, Banten, on Wednesday. The meat was destroyed in an incinerator, belonging to the Agricultural Quarantine Office of Cilegon. The 7.4 tons of meat was confiscated in the course of two raids. The first arrest, with a volume of 4,555 kilograms, was made on July 5, 2014, while the second arrest, with a volume of 2,918 kilogram, was made on July 8, 2014. Head of the Cilegon Quarantine Office Banun Harpini said that during the period January-July 2014, the quarantine office had foiled nine smuggling attempts of pork. He said that the meat had been smuggled from Sumatra to Java. The total volumes of meat confiscated by the quarantine office from 2012 to July 2014 stood at 25,413 kilograms. The quarantine office in Lampung, Sumatra, meanwhile, had confiscated 34,105 kilograms of swine meat till July 2014, he said. Until now, the Lampung quarantine has seized 5,700 kilograms of pork. Meanwhile, legislator Habib Nabiel Almusawa has urged the government to guarantee the protection of Muslim consumers by not allowing swine meat into traditional markets. The government should take immediate action to curb the wide circulation of pork to consumers, he said in Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan, last week.

The name of each year’s winner of the Marathon Classic is placed on the signs along the main drag of this Toledo suburb. “It’s really cool,” said Recari, a 27-year-old Spaniard who has won three times on the LPGA Tour. “It’s obviously a great bonus not only to get this trophy and everything that comes along with it. But to get your own street for a year, that’s pretty special.” Recari has become more of a household name as her career blossomed in the last year. After winning the Kia tournament, she outdueled Paula Creamer down the stretch to also win the Marathon. While collecting more than $1 million in checks, she placed sixth in the tour’s player of the year standings, finished 3-1-1 for the victorious European side at the Solheim Cup and contended at last week’s Women’s British Open. She began the final round at Royal Birkdale three shots back of the leader but faded to a tie for 17th with a 79. “I had a little bit of a slow start first half of the year, but feel like everything is coming along,” she said, referring to lower back and hip problems. “I’m working on things that feel good for me. I’m healthy and fit. I had a very good performance last week, and I’m very happy with my practicing.” Mo Martin, who won the Women’s British Open with a closing 72, is still adapting to the title of major champion. “It’s definitely been a whirlwind,” she said of arriving in Ohio after several connecting flights and lots of frequent-flier miles. “I hadn’t even turned my phone on. When I eventually did get here, I turned my phone on and it kind of exploded, everybody just congratulating me.” She also got a pat-on-the-back letter from no less than legend Arnold Palmer. Two days earlier, the pain and damage from two recent crashes had already ended Talansky’s outsider hopes of victory. He began Wednesday’s 187.5-kilometer (116.3-mile) hilly ride from Besancon to Oyonnax in eastern France in 26th place — nearly 15 minutes behind race leader Vincenzo Nibali. The Italian retained the yellow jersey Wednesday by finishing right behind France’s Tony Gallopin, who won Stage 11 in a bold late breakaway. Talansky, nursing a sore back, had bad luck compound his misery early in the stage: He blew a tire and got left behind. roughly 37 minutes, race officials said. He finished 32:05 back, with a 20-second penalty for taking too long a pause. Other riders might have calculated that it would be wiser not to risk worsening an injury so early in a promising career. But Talansky was running on determination, and wanted to make it through the stage. “I just wanted to make it to the finish ... for my team and the work that they’ve put into this Tour for me,” he said at the team bus after straggling to the finish. “I didn’t just want to stop and go home that way after everything they’ve done for me.” Talansky was the last of the 179 remaining riders in a pack already depleted of its two biggest stars to crashes. MUNICH — Germany midfielder Toni Kroos has joined Real Madrid from Bayern Munich on a six-year contract. Madrid said the 24-year-old Kroos, a key member of Germany’s World Cupwinning team, would be presented at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium later Thursday. Neither Champions League winner Madrid nor Bundesliga champion Bayern disclosed the transfer fee. Kroos was chosen as the best player at the 2007 Under-17 World Cup, when Germany finished third. He joined Bayern when he was 16 and later spent 18 months on loan at Bayer Leverkusen before returning. He was a regular starter since Pep Guardiola took over as coach last season. Kroos helped Bayern win the Champions League in 2013 and domestic doubles the past two seasons. He was on Germany’s 2010 World Cup squad, but was given a bigger role in coach Joachim Loew’s team during qualifying for this year’s tournament in Brazil. Boca Juniors agree deal to coach young Chinese players Reuters
