DreamWorks announced Monday that an untitled Cold War spy thriller from Spielberg will open Oct. 16 of next year, and “The BFG” is planned for July 1, 2016. The Cold War thriller is to star Tom Hanks as James Donovan, an attorney negotiating the return of an American pilot from the Soviet Union in 1960. “The BFG” is a live-action adaptation of Roald Dahl’s 1982 children’s book. The 67-year-old Spielberg is juggling numerous producing jobs in television and film. His last directed movie was 2012’s Oscar-winning “Lincoln.”

Four villages in Nusa Penida face food crisis Bali Post

SEMARAPURA - Each year, Nusa Penida subdistrict, Klungkung, remains difficult to meet its food needs. The region becoming the pocket of poverty faces food crisis again this midyear. Of the 16 villages, four villages are now struggling to meet their food needs due to prolonged drought. The Acting Regent of Klungkung, Made Kasta, when contacted on Monday (Jun 16), confirmed that Nusa Penida subdistrict could not get out of the food crisis issues. Kasta said that since three years ago the local government had built a rice granary in four villages considered the most difficult to meet their daily food needs. The four villages included the Batumadeg, Batukandik, Sekartaji and Bunga Mekar. It was caused by geographical conditions of the region spreading on hill ranges and could only cultivate tubers and other crops during rainy season. Meanwhile, other villages located on the coast could still survive with a variety of other food sources. Moreover, the coastal region had been classified into urban area on the island. Kasta admitted the people on the upper areas were always difficult to meet their food needs every dry season. The existence of rice granary could not always help the local community. After knowing the four villages faced food crisis again this year, his party planned to hand over food

aid again to them. “Now, it is the third year and will be the last,” he said. As planned, the local government would deliver 8.4 tons of rice aid through the Food Security Office. Each village would receive 2 tons of rice to temporarily overcome the people’s food difficulties. After this submission, the deputy regent affirmed to conduct an evaluation whether the aid was effective or not to help the residents of Nusa Penida go out of the food crisis. Moreover, the program had been running for three years. “After the third year, we will evaluate whether the presence of rice granary and the aid disbursed each year are beneficial or not because they face the same problem each year. It must be considered to find out other alternatives,” said Kasta. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

WASHINGTON - Amazon’s mystery unveiling Wednesday is widely expected to be a smartphone, which if managed well could shake up the market and boost the US online giant as a device maker. The company has given few hints, inviting a small group of media to the event to be hosted by Amazon founder and chief executive Jeff Bezos. The announcement contained an image of what appeared to be the edge of a smartphone -- a device long rumored to be in the works by the Seattle, Washington firm, which is a retailer of a multitude of goods and digital content. “If it is a smartphone, Amazon would automatically be considered one of the top players before it even ships its first phone,” said Gerry Purdy, chief mobile analyst for Compass Intelligence. Purdy said Amazon’s market

clout, large customer base and willingness to sell devices at low profit margins gives the company an opportunity to get a foothold in this key segment. “They have a lot of tools,” Purdy told AFP. “They can give free access to content, access to music, or they could credit your monthly phone bill if you spend enough with Amazon.” Amazon has worked to keep customers close with its Amazon Prime subscription service, for $99 a year. 11 year olds and will have a mix of videos featuring characters familiar to DreamWorks Animation audiences — like “Shrek” and Po from “Kung Fu Panda” — alongside those who haven’t yet made it big — like cardboard cut-out news anchors from “The Report Card.”

GIANYAR - Ubud area has become one of the main tourist destinations in Bali. Ubud has long been known as an area having a rich culture and natural beauty. Not surprisingly, many investors look to invest in Ubud, where one of them is to develop a budget hotel or city hotel. However, many circles judge that it is not feasible to develop budget hotel in Ubud. It is based on consideration that low cost hotel is potentially lethal to small-scale tourist accommodation businesses owned by local communities. A legislator of Gianyar House, Ketut Karda, recently said that his party did not want the development of budget hotels in Ubud. If Ubud was stuffed with budget hotels or city hotels, Ubud was feared to lose its hallmark that promoted rural tourism. “If they are allowed to grow, then what is the difference of Ubud from other tourist areas such as Badung and Denpasar?” he criticized. Tariff war would occur between budget hotels and home stays, bungalows, cottages or villas owned by local community. According to him, the government should no longer give permission for the construction of budget hotels. WASHINGTON - The International Monetary Fund on Monday slashed its forecast for the United States and urged policymakers to keep interest rates low and raise the minimum wage to strengthen growth in the world’s largest economy. The global crisis lender said in its annual report card on the US economy that the country will likely grow only 2.0 percent this year, compared with the previous 2.8 percent estimate, blaming mainly the unexpected contraction in the first quarter. It said growth is likely to rebound to 3.0 percent next year, but to ensure that, the government should take measures like increasing the minimum wage and embarking on a strong infrastructure-building program. Moreover, the US Federal Reserve should not expect the economy to get back to full employment before the end of 2017, and that it could afford to hold its key interest rate at the zero level past the middle of next year, when the Fed has signaled it expects to raise the rate. “The scars of recession are still visible,” IMF managing director Christine Lagarde warned. She cited still-high long-term unemployment, low laborforce participation, and the fact that some 50 million Americans still live in poverty. “There is no single measure that is going to deal with all those issues,” she said. “The US should invest in its future... The priority is to invest in people and to invest in infrastructure.” The IMF report said that the US labor market remains significantly weaker than is implied by the headline 6.3 percent unemployment rate. It pointed to stagnant wages and the low workforce participation rate, now 62.8 percent compared to more than 66 percent before the 2008 economic crisis. The IMF said the US government could afford to take shortterm measures to strengthen growth and jobs, despite the ongoing large fiscal deficit and huge government debt burden. But it said that warring political parties need to come up with a medium-term plan for addressing those problems, one that includes revising the tax structure to raise revenues, cutting the growth of health care costs, and fundamentally reforming the government’s social security pension program. “Given the substantial economic slack in the economy, there is a strong case to provide continued policy support,” the Fund said. Political battle It said more government efforts to boost growth short term would allow the Federal Reserve to more comfortably exit its easy-money stance and cut the risks that stance poses to global financial stability. At the same time, the IMF said that “regrettably,” US politicians have been unable to agree on such an approach. Stepping into a hot domestic political battle, the IMF took the side of the administration of President Barack Obama in advocating a rise in the minimum wage. It noted that, in real terms, wages have fallen significantly over the past four decades, an issue which economists say locks many Americans in poverty. The Fund said that nearly 50 million Americans still live in poverty, and that the principal way government policy could help would be to return to stronger growth and job creation. But it added that increasing the minimum wage from the current federal government standard of $7.25 an hour “would help raise incomes for millions of working poor.” “Any increase of that minimum wage would be helpful from an economic point of view,” said Lagarde.

The deal is a big one for the EU, which was a leader in the early days of mobile technology but has trailed Asia and North America since the rise of the smartphone in providing the most up-to-date services. 5G technology -- set to be 1,000 times faster than the 4G services currently available -- is in the early stages of development, but governments and technology giants are pouring billions into it so as not to be left behind.

By tying up with the South Koreans, the EU hopes to restore its onetime standing and not suffer from the fragmentation that has hampered the rollout of 4G technology across the 28-nation bloc. They were supposed to go to their son’s graduation ceremony. He returned the ticket three days before the flight, and canceled his own trip as well. In messages posted to a mobile phone blog, Liu apologized to his wife for not allowing her to visit their son earlier. “I truly regret that I did not let you visit your son during the Chinese New Year. Now it’s been nine months

since you last saw your son,” he wrote. “The sense of helplessness, the feeling of powerlessness, and the pain have not eased but only worsened as times goes by,” Liu said in an interview. “Any holiday or days of significance have become unbearable. I don’t want to hear any mention of them.” Many of the Chinese relatives have been reluctant to talk about their missing kin to avoid any suggestion that they are gone for good and to keep the focus on finding the missing plane, though they have become somewhat more likely to speak about them now. They say their belief that their loved ones are still alive helps them get up in the morning and care for their families. “With his photos on the walls, I don’t feel that he is absent, and seeing him in the photos has given me strength to do my best to take care of our small child before he returns,” said Zhang Ying, whose husband also was aboard Flight 370. At the same time, it is heart-wrenching for her to be without the man who hoisted their baby above his head on weekend outings, and who fell asleep while holding her tiny hand. Zhang said she can no longer produce milk for her daughter, and that her mother-in-law has lost hearing from crying so much. Cheng Liping, whose husband was on the plane, called the missing flight “a fatal blow that has spun my entire world.” Her heart ached when her 6-year-old son called “daddy” to a stranger who walked out of a car in their Beijing neighborhood. As for Zhang Qian, she is rarely outside at all. She quit her work as an office clerk and shuts herself at home. “I don’t go out anymore because outside I see the shadow of my husband and me together,” Zhang said. Zhang met Wang Houbin nearly nine years ago in Beijing in their college freshman year. Wang was on Flight 370 returning home after working on an art exhibit in Kuala Lumpur. “I am afraid to go out. I don’t speak any more,” said Zhang, who only ventures out to meet other relatives of Flight 370 passengers and to visit temples. “I used to sleep a lot but I have spent many nights without closing my eyes, not even with the help of sleeping pills.” Her parents have moved in with her, but sometimes they become outlets for her grief and frustration. “I throw tempers at my dad and mom because I cannot help myself,” she said, bead-like tears rolling down her thin cheeks at the mention of Wang. She finds comfort in Buddhist temples, though she was not religious before the plane vanished. “I didn’t believe in this in the past, but now I pray wholeheartedly for the return of my husband,” she said.

JAKARTA - Indonesian prosecutors sought a life sentence Monday for a former top judge accused of accepting bribes in more than a dozen cases involving regional election disputes, and of money-laundering. Former constitutional court chief judge Akil Mochtar was arrested last year by officials of the powerful anti-graft body while a businessman and lawmaker were about to hand him around three billion rupiah ($254,086), prosecutors said. “The defendant has been legally and convincingly proven guilty of accepting presents (bribes)... to intervene in constitutional court rulings,” prosecutor Pulung Rinandoro told an anti-corruption court in Jakarta. He called for a life sentence, a fine of 10 billion rupiah and the

revocation of Mochtar’s political rights. Mochtar, 53 allegedly accepted more than $4.8 million in bribes in relation to 15 disputed regional elections and is suspected of having laundered more than 161 billion rupiah from 2010 to 2013, the prosecutor said. One of the constitutional court’s main roles is to decide on electoral disputes. The court, created in 2001, also hears cases about the constitution and rules on any attempt to impeach the president. JAKARTA - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) on Tuesday questioned the former member of Democrat Party’s Central Board, Sutan Bhatoegana (SB), as a suspect in an alleged corruption case at the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry. “I leave this all to Allah. Whatever is the best according to Allah, I will follow it,” stated former chairman of the House of Representatives (DPR) Commission VII overseeing energy and minerals. SB was named a suspect by the KPK in May 2014. “Based on the developments of the case, it is believed that corruption has allegedly been committed in connection with the discussion of the revised budget of 2013 with SB as the chairman of the DPR Commission VII for 2009-2012 being the suspect,” noted KPK spokesman Johan Budi. Johan claimed that the suspect had allegedly received a gift or a pledge, which is believed to be given in order to make him do or not do something within his capacity to violate several articles in the anti-corruption law, which carries a

maximum sentence of 20 years imprisonment and a fine of Rp1 billion. He noted that the corruption case was the result of the development of the case of Rudi Rubiandini, the former chief of the oil and gas regulator SKK Migas, who has already been convicted. During court sessions, Rudi confessed to have given US$200 thousand to Sutan through Commission VII member Tri Julianto at a fruit shop on Jalan MT Haryono, but both Sutan and Tri have denied the allegations. He stated that the money was given as “a post-fasting holiday allowance” to the House Commission VII members. Sutan’s name has also surfaced for having sought a reward from a company, PT Timas Suplindo, in exchange for his help in securing a tender at SKK Migas for an offshore construction project of Chevron. Sutan worked as a deputy director in the company during the period between 2003 and 2004. Rudi was sentenced to seven years imprisonment and fined Rp200 million.

JAKARTA - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and his entourage left Jakarta’s Halim Perdanakusuma air force base at 8 am local time on Tuesday for Fiji, for a three-day working visit at the invitation of the Fijian government. The Indonesian head of state will take a nine-and-a-half hour flight before landing at Nadi International Airport in Fiji. Presidential special staff for international relations Teuku Faizasyah said earlier in a press statement that the president was invited to step up bilateral cooperation between the two countries. LONDON - When Grigor Dimitrov grasped the Queen’s Club trophy after winning the Aegon Championships on Sunday a quick glance at the names engraved on its plinth might have given him goose bumps. In edging past Spain’s Feliciano Lopez in a gripping contest the 23-year-old Bulgarian, long-regarded as a future grand slam champion, etched his name alongside some of the greatest exponents of the grasscourt arts. John McEnroe, Jimmy Connors, Boris Becker, Pete Sampras all won the traditional Wimbledon warm-up tournament just a few miles away from the All England Club while of the current generation Lleyton Hewitt, Rafa Nadal and Andy Murray have all found the slick lawns to their liking. While winning at Queen’s Club is no guarantee of success at Wimbledon, form at the homely Victorian club next to Baron’s Court Underground station has traditionally been a useful barometer for the year’s third grand slam tournament. It proved the perfect Wimbledon tune-up for McEnroe in 1981 and 1984, the blue touch paper for flame-haired teenager Becker to rampage to Wimbledon glory in 1985. Sampras won at Queen’s in 1995 and 1999 before serving and volleying his way to the Wimbledon title while Australian Hewitt did the double in 2002. Nadal’s famous de-throning of Roger Federer at Wimbledon in 2008 was preceded by the title at Queen’s while last year Murray triumphed there before ending his country’s 77 year-wait for a men’s singles champion at the All England Club. World No.13 Dimitrov, who already has a Wimbledon title to his name, albeit in the boy’s singles, seemed well aware of the significance of his 6-7(8) 7-6(1) 7-6(6) win over Lopez - his third title this year, all on different surfaces. “We’re about to find that out in a week,” Dimitrov told reporters when asked if he could repeat Murray’s double. “It’s always I think special to win that week. SAO PAULO — One of the World Cup’s most exciting games had the most empty seats in the first round of the tournament in Brazil. More than 3,500 seats were empty when the Netherlands routed defending champion Spain 5-1 in the northeastern city of Salvador on Friday, according to FIFA’s match reports and its numbers on stadium capacities. Although it wasn’t the worst crowd — 48,173 attended the match at the Arena Fonte Nova — it was the game with the most unused seats. Crowds have been good so far, but there were many matches with empty seats across the 12 host cities. Nearly all matches were sold out ahead of the tournament, and FIFA said “the empty seats corresponded to either no-shows or people who did not collect their tickets.” Among the matches with visible empty seats was the high-profile encounter between England and Italy in the jungle city of Manaus, when 39,800 were in hand. More than 503,000 people have attended the initial 10 matches of the first World Cup in Brazil since 1950. Another match with a high number of unused seats was Ivory Coast-Japan in Recife, when 2,316 chairs were empty, according to the most recent numbers on FIFA.com. The Uruguay-Costa Rica match in Fortaleza had 1,669 empty seats, while the Colombia-Greece game in Belo Horizonte had 1,085 unused chairs. The other matches played by Sunday were mostly full, according to the numbers available from FIFA. The biggest crowd was at the Argentina-Bosnia match, when 74,738 fans were at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro. FIFA said 39,216 people saw the Mexico-Cameroon match in Natal, the smallest attendance by Sunday. More than 62,100 people attended the World Cup opener between Brazil and Croatia at the Itaquerao stadium in Sao Paulo. Football’s governing body said it received “an unprecedented number” of more than 11 million requests for the nearly 3.1 tickets available for the tournament in Brazil.
