DENPASAR - Bali tourism plays a strategic role in the economic turnaround in Bali. However, the rapid development of infrastructure with the pretext of facilitating access and providing tourism supporting facilities has led to tangible and intangible change in various segments of Balinese life.

A lecturer from the Tourism Faculty, Udayana University, IGA Oka Mahagangga, said a variety of incidents ranging from the Gulf War in the early 1990s, the first Bali bombing (2002) and the second Bali bombing (2005), the issue of bird flu virus and the issue of cholera and diarrhea, did not necessarily change the tourism as the leading development of Bali. “It needs realizing that tourism, aside from requiring creative efforts to constantly innovate, should also have a very powerful impact on various lines of people’s

life,” he said. The entire Balinese community and tourism components should be honest and admit that there had been a change in various segments of Balinese life. “Despite the sociocultural change is the essence of dynamic society, at least the change can be planned so that it will minimize the risk of the degradation to cultural, social pathologies, crime, environmental damage and the other negative impacts,” said the Head of the Undergraduate Program of Tourist Destination, Faculty

of Tourism. Role of the government, tourism component and Balinese people in general, including the people’s representatives, should have single vision and mission in realizing the sustainable development of Bali tourism. If agreed, the paradigm of Bali tourism development was cultural tourism so that the logic of Bali tourism development was inseparable from the cultural attribute as the symbol and identity of Bali.
