LONDON — Kate Winslet has been honored by Queen Elizabeth II for her titanic contribution to the arts. The actress, who won a best actress Academy Award in 2009 for “The Reader” and made her breakthrough as the feisty Rose in 1997 blockbuster “Titanic,” has been named a Commander of the Order of the British Empire, or CBE, in the queen’s Birthday Honors List, published Saturday. Winslet said the honor made her “very proud to be a Brit.” “I am both surprised and honored to stand alongside so many men and woman who have achieved great things for our country,” the 36-year-old star said. Actor and director Kenneth Branagh was made a knight and will be known as Sir Kenneth. A respected Shakespearean actor whose films as a director range from “Henry V” and “Hamlet” to the comic-book fantasy “Thor,” Branagh said he felt “humble, elated, and incredibly lucky” to get the honor. It puts him in a pantheon of theatrical knights alongside the late Sir Laurence
Olivier, whom Branagh played in “My Life With Marilyn.” “When I was a kid, I dreamed of pulling on a shirt for the Northern Ireland football team,” said the Belfast-born, 51-year-old actor. “I could only imagine how proud you might feel. NEW YORK — New York City police are investigating whether shots were fired inside a nightclub during a bottle-throwing brawl involving singer Chris Brown and Drake’s entourage. Some witnesses report hearing shots during the dust-up Thursday morning at W.i.P in SoHo, but no one reported seeing a gun. Police are looking into the claims. Chris Brown, his girlfriend and his bodyguard were among eight injured during the fight inside the club. Police say members of Drake’s entourage stopped Brown as he was leaving. The fight escalated and bottles were thrown. Brown spoke with police; Drake has not. Drake’s representatives say he was on his way out when the fight broke out and did not injure anyone. A manager of a club in the same building was arrested Friday on an unrelated violation.

Foreign tourist visit increases 11 percent

JAKARTA - Within the first three months of this year, the foreign tourist visit reached 1.90 million, or an increase of 11.01 percent compared to the same period last year coming to 1.71 million people. It was stated by Director of Indonesia Imaging, Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, Esthy Reko Astuty, after the launch of Augmented Reality mobile application services entitled Indonesia In Your Hand in Jakarta. According to Esthy, movement of domestic tourists had also showed an increase in keeping with the improvement in per capita income of the people of Indonesia. “A
lot of travelers rely on the internet connection on their mobile phones to find out information about tourist destinations,” she said. Esthy said that tourism promo-
tion in Indonesia should primarily used digital media, especially mobile phones, because digital media was very effective to reach the tourist target that would be coming to Indonesia.

Criticism expressed by some legislators of Tabanan House related to the Jalan Bypass Soekarno eventually receded. Regent of Tabanan, Ni Putu Eka Wiryastuti, officially named the national road. Such decision was set forth in the Regent Decree No. 170/20112 dated May 29, 2012. It stipulated the road section starting from the Vishnu Murti statue in Kediri to Adipura statue at Pesiapan was named Jalan Ir. Sukarno. As planned, the inauguration of the road naming would be held on Monday (Jun 18). Spokesperson of Tabanan Government, Putu Dian Setiawan, justified about the schedule of the road naming inauguration. He asserted the naming with Sukarno served as an expression of respect and honor as well as commemoration of services extended by the Proclaimer Father. “It poses our sincere tribute to Bung Karno,” he said on Friday (Jun 15). During the road inauguration, said Dian, the Tabanan bypass road section would be completely closed for 10 hours starting 6:00 a.m. to 15:00 p.m. local time. The closure started from the intersection of Vishnu Murti Statue in Kediri to Adipura Statue at
Pesiapan. “The road inauguration ceremony is centered at the Adipura monument,” said Dian. During the closure, the road users would be diverted to alternative route to the town of Tabanan. Since the traffic flow was ascertained to be crowded, Jalan Gajah Mada downtown would be made two-way lane. He hoped the entire community could provide support and acknowledgement related to the closure. Meanwhile, the Head of Tabanan Transportation, Communications and Informatics Agency, Agus Harta Wiguna, explained the road users from Denpasar would be diverted to the town of Tabanan through Vishnu Murti Statue. Then, road users from Gilimanuk would be diverted to the town
through Adipura Statue. As reported previously, a legislator of the Tabanan Golkar faction, Ketut Loka Antara, deplored the naming plan to Jalan Bypass Kediri-Pesiapan with the name of Soekarno. Conversely, Chairman of the Branch Executive Board of Tabanan Pancasila Youth proposed to the Regent of Tabanan to use the name of local hero or Bali tourism name, where one of which was Jatiluwih or Bedugul. This politician argued the figure of Sukarno had been honored as a national hero. On that account, he suggested to local government to highlight local heroes or local potential for the road naming. Dayu Miswarihati, met last Friday (15/6). This total is mostly on males with its risk factor on heterosexual intercourse with age range 20-39 years old. In 2011 it was noted 53 patients died due to HIV and usually hospitalized in normal rooms usually who uses government health insurances such as Nusa Indah room that became the place for infectious disease patients such as rabies, bird flu, TB , tropical diseases and HIV unless they have the budget to be on VIP rooms. For TB patients they were treated at one space as it is infectious through droplets or saliva and so separated yet those who got TB during HIV infected will be separated as HIV patients are weak and its treatment is different. Right now the only medicine that could decrease HIV virus inside the body is ARV (Anti Retro Viral) where it should be drunk all their life. According to Ni Nyoman Sri Sutarni, AMK, CST Care Support and Treatment of Sanglah Hospital stated since VCT was opened in August 2004, those active consuming ARV reached 1215 people out of the 1800 people initialed noted down. “Some died, lost contact due to moving places or not extending it and so until now those active consuming are that much,” Sutarni stated. Not all HIV patients took ARV at Sanglah Hospital but also at Yayasan Kerti paraja Foudnation. ARV has three tips and if there are resistance going on, then it has to be changed to ARV line 2 that is more expensive. This resistance could be caused due to not drinking it routinely or it doesn’t suit the patient. Until now HIV Patients with this type of medicine reached 52 people which four of them are children. These medicines were given for free yet for line 2 supplies are not as much so it has to be given as needed and efficiently. (san)

Ahead of planting season, the fertilizer stock is ascertained to be in safe condition up to few months to come. Therefore, farmers are appealed not to worry about shortages of fertilizer and the threat of price hike. It is indicated by the fertilizer stocks remaining to be stacked in the marketing office warehouse of Pupuk Kalimantan Timur (PKT) of Bali branch. “Fertilizer stock existing in our warehouse has included the allocation to meet the needs of the Corporate-based Food Production Improvement Program (GP3K) in next July,” said the Head of PKT Bali Branch Offices, Imam Sujono. He further said the needs of urea fertilizer in Bali to meet the market demand in July ranged from 2,000 to 2,500 tons. Meanwhile, the stock owned by PKT Bali fertilizer per June 13, 2012 had exceeded the estimated needs for the upcoming planting season and GP3K. Regarding the current stock of fertilizer, Imam said that urea fertilizer belonging to PKT Bali Branch amounted to 5,010 tons, while NPK reached 64,850 tons. “We are optimistic to meet the needs of farmers, considering the existing stock has far exceeded the demand. Moreover, in the near future the supply of NPK fertilizer would be increased again as much as 500 tons from East Java and 1,500 tons from Bontang. Similarly, urea supply will also be added 3,200 tons. At the moment, they are still being unloaded at Celukan Bawang Harbor,” he explained. Previously a number of farmers worried about the scarcity of fertilizers in the market, whereas the fertilizer stocks in Bali had been adequate and even exceeded the need. It happened because farmers were reluctant to make definitive drafting of group needs (RDKK) as a condition of initial purchase of the subsidized urea fertilizer. “It’s the main issue in this matter. In fact, Bali farmers are unable to be independent, so please do not be abandoned. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Second death in Scottish Legionnaires’ outbreak

A second person has died following an outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease in Scotland which has led to almost 90 confirmed or suspected cases, health authorities said Friday. The outbreak in Edinburgh has already claimed the life of a 56-year-old man and there have been 41 confirmed cases and 48 suspected cases so far, the local health authority said. Ten people remain in a critical condition in intensive care. The latest death, at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, was reportedly a man in his 40s. Health officials said he had significant pre-existing health problems. Scotland’s health minister Nicola Sturgeon said the number of cases was unlikely to rise. “Despite this sad and tragic development, it remains the case that we believe the outbreak to have peaked. However, we continue to monitor the situation carefully,” she said. Britain’s Health and Safety Executive and Edinburgh City Council are still investigating the source of the outbreak, with their probe so far focusing on industrial cooling towers in the southwest of the city. Improvement notices have been issued to two firms, a distillery and a pharmaceutical company, about the cooling towers, although authorities have said they are not necessarily the source. Legionnaires’ disease is contracted through the inhalation of contaminated water droplets and is not known to be transmitted from person to person.

JIUQUAN, China — China launched its most ambitious space mission yet on Saturday, carrying its first female astronaut and two male colleagues in an attempt to dock with an orbiting module and work on board for more than a week. The Shenzhou 9 capsule lifted off as scheduled at 6:37 p.m. (1037 GMT) from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center on the edge of the Gobi Desert. All systems functioned normally and, just over 10 minutes later, it opened its solar panels and entered orbit. The launch was declared a success by space program chief Chang Wanquan, a People’s Liberation Army general who sits on the ruling Communist Party’s powerful central military commission — underscoring the program’s close military ties. Female astronaut Liu Yang, 33, and two male crew members — mission commander and veteran astronaut Jing Haipeng, 45, and newcomer Liu Wang, 43 — are to dock the spacecraft with a prototype space lab launched last year in a key step toward building
a permanent space station. All three are experienced pilots and officers in the Chinese air force. Two of the astronauts will live and work inside the module to test its life-support systems while the third will remain in the capsule to deal with any unexpected emergencies. China is hoping to join the United States and Russia as the only countries to send independently maintained space stations into orbit. It is already one of just three nations to have launched manned spacecraft on their own. Another manned mission to the module is planned later this year, while possible future missions could include sending a man to the moon. The space program is a source of enormous national pride for China, reflecting its rapid economic and technological prog-
ress and ambition to rank among the world’s leading nations. The selection of the first female astronaut is giving the program an additional publicity boost. On a state visit in Denmark, President Hu Jintao congratulated everyone connected with the mission. “I urge you to carry forward the spirit ... and make new contributions to advance the development of our country’s manned space mission,” Hu said in a statement read to technicians at Jiuquan. The astronauts are expected to reach the module, called Tiangong 1, on Monday. Now orbiting at 343 kilometers (213 miles) above Earth, the module is only a prototype, and plans call for it to be replaced by a larger permanent space station due for completion around 2020.

There are unfounded rumors that they devour and deplete fish stocks. And at least four of them have been killed by humans in Hawaii since late last year. To help correct the misconceptions, government scientists plan to glue submersible cameras onto the seals’ backs, using the footage to prove to fishermen the animals are not harming their way of life. It may even end up on reality TV. “It’s following seals to have them tell their own story,” Charles Littnan, lead scientist for the National Marine Fisheries Service’s Hawaiian Monk Seal Research Program. They expect to see the seals dive for eels and fish on the ocean floor. The “Crittercams,” provided by the National Geographic Society, are the latest tactic to protect a population that is down to just 1,100 in Pacific Ocean waters around Hawaii. The killings were painful blows to a species on course to disappear in 50 to 100 years. The deaths have come as resentment simmers while the species experiences a modest rebound around Kauai, Oahu and other islands where Hawaii’s humans live. There have been cases of people pestering seals: state officials found an Oahu teenager throwing rocks at a seal at a wildlife sanctuary in January. On Friday, the state said a court fined him $1,000 and sentenced him to 80 hours of community service for trespassing and harassing the monk seal. Archaeological evidence — like monk seal bones in a human trash pit dating between the 15th and 18th centuries — shows the seals were around on these islands long ago. But most were hunted for their meat and fur by the early 1900s. The seals were then generally only found among tiny, remote atolls northwest of Hawaii’s main islands.

RIYADH - Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah will bury his former heir, Crown Prince Nayef, in Mecca on Sunday, and must now name a new successor to rule the world’s biggest oil exporter. The most likely candidate to take the position to succeed the 89-year-old king is Prince Salman, 76, and like all former kings a son of Saudi Arabia’s founder Abdulaziz ibn Saud. “There will be a meeting where the next crown prince will be decided. If you take a historical perspective it has always been done in an orderly and organized manner. Prince Salman fits the profile in many ways,” said Khaled Almaeena, editor in chief of the Saudi Gazette. Salman, who is seen as a pragmatist with a strong grasp of the intricate balance of competing princely and clerical interests that dominate Saudi politics, was named defense minister last year. The appointment of a new crown prince is not likely to
change the kingdom’s position on foreign or domestic policy, but King Abdullah’s new heir will face a range of major challenges when he one day becomes king. Saudi Arabia has a rapidly growing population and an economy that is heavily reliant on oil exports. It also faces a threat from al Qaeda and a regional rivalry with Iran. “Certainly they are going to continue to focus on the relationship with the U.S., and continue to make efforts to properly husband their abundant natural resources of oil,” said Robert Jordan, U.S. ambassador to Riyadh from 2001 to 2003. Business chiefs pledge to value earth’s natural assets

RIO DE JANEIRO - Some 39 chief executives of banks, investment funds and insurance firms Saturday pledged at a Rio+20 business forum Saturday to integrate the Earth’s natural capital into loans and investments. Twenty years after the first Earth Summit highlighted the importance of the natural environment, they unveiled a “Natural Capital Declaration” that commit their companies also to reporting or disclosing on the theme of natural capital and accounting for natural capital in accounting frameworks. Natural capital comprises Earth’s natural assets (soil, air, water, flora and fauna) and the ecosystem services flowing from them. Neither these services nor the stock of natural capital that pro-
vides them are adequately valued compared to social and financial capital, the signatories said. The declaration calls on the private and public sectors to work together to create the conditions necessary to “maintain and enhance natural capital as a critical economic, ecological and social asset.” It also urges policy-makers at the UN-sponsored Rio+20 conference to move forward in crafting legislation and regulations that can spur the development of financial products and services that sustain the earth’s natural capital. Among those who signed were chief executives of China Merchants Bank, National Australia Bank, Japan’s Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Holding and China’s Shenzhen Development Bank. The World Wide Fund for Na-
ture (WWF), the Carbon Disclosure Project, Fauna and Flora International and Conservation International were the first four nongovernmental, not-for-profit organisations to back the initiative. “The private sector must build momentum post-Rio to ensure that valuing natural capital becomes embedded into both public and private sector investment decisions,” said WWF’s Director General Jim Leape. “To achieve this, new indicators may be needed and governance arrangements may need to change. The private sector has a key role to play,” he added. World leaders are to meet here June 20-22 to mull prospects for spurring sustainable development that would reconcile economic growth with poverty eradication and environmental protection.
The IMF is one of three organizations Mariano Rajoy’s government turned to for an assessment of the state of Spain’s banking sector ahead of a C100 billion ($125 billion) bailout for failing lenders. The latest IMF document, released Friday, was not part of a bank sector report, but one of regular economic analyses issued on the state of Spain’s economy. It was critical of how the country had missed its deficit reduction target in 2011, despite insisting “until almost the end of the year that the deficit was on track.” Spain’s deficit for 2011 had to be revised upward twice to finish at 8.9 percent of economic output, instead of the 3 percent maximum level set by the European Union. Rajoy has set a goal of reducing the deficit to 5.3 percent of GDP in 2012. The IMF report called that goal “very ambitious” and said it would “likely be missed.” Rajoy said the IMF proposals, contained in the Friday report, were only suggestions and he would not implement them for now. onstrators marched late Saturday in at least three Spanish cities to protest what they said was disgraceful mismanagement of banks that had left them on the verge of bankruptcy. In Madrid the protesters gathered outside the headquarters Bankia SA, a bank that has requested euro19 billion ($23.9 billion) in state aid and has euro32 billion ($40.3 billion) in toxic assets on its books. Bankia is one of five domestic Spanish banks assessed by the IMF in its June 9 financial stability report as having heavy exposure to corporate and retail real estate lending. In Friday’s report, the IMF also suggested that Rajoy’s government increase value-added tax — or VAT, a type of sales tax — and eliminate a recently re-introduced deduction on mortgage payments for first-time homebuyers. Rajoy has since frozen wages but resisted cutting them and hiking sales tax, as the economy enters a double-dip recession.

Of course, it is Balinese language. As Japanese and Chinese, Balinese language also has its own characters. They consist of some 18 main characters and 10 vowel sounds. Ordinarily, Balinese characters are used to write palm-leaf manuscript or lontar. Such characters are incised with sharp knife
or stylus. When the writing works have completed, they should be rubbed with a blend of oil and lamp shoot to blacken them. So they are visible easily. Since the works were performed manually, the copying of a manuscript took a long time. At a glance, Balinese characters look like Old Javanese, Tamil (India). It is inseparable from historical aspect where they had similarity of genealogical lines. Today, Balinese characters still have restricted use, namely at school for local subject from elementary school to senior high school. It is becoming the responsibility of local government to preserve and develop Balinese language in order it could survive in the midst of the growth of other languages like Bahasa Indonesia and foreign languages.
Balinese language poses a medium and spirit of Balinese culture. To preserve Balinese culture should also simultaneously maintain and use of Balinese language in daily life. In other words, speaking Balinese language also characterizes one of the identities as a Balinese. Among the use of other languages, Balinese language should remain to give a space to grow and develop. Other than speaking and teaching it at schools, it should also accommodate the need of modern community or use in wider functions of language. Balinese community receives abundant heritages of lontar or palm-leaf manuscripts from the predecessors retained by individuals and museums. They carry many aspects of knowledge, ranging from
philosophy, local healing, literature, architecture, agriculture, herbal practice, astrology and so forth. Therefore, if they could be interpreted and presented in popular language, they could become attractive information for young generation and saleable books for commercial needs. Today, there is also a trend of poising the tradition with modern science namely by re-interpreting the indigenous wisdoms that are relevant to the current time. People will get balanced inputs from the past and current orientation. Of course, such treasures will be beneficial for the conservation and future development of Balinese culture because it stays in touch with its original roots. Young generation should be introduced to these roots at early stage. Later, they will not
lose their identity and even could feel proud of it. Moreover, it could give them inspiration in making their creativities, either in fine arts, performance, traditional architecture or herbal healings. Thanks to modern technology, the writing of Balinese characters now can be made easy by Bali Simbar font. It is the innovative thinking of I Made Suatjana (1986) lies behind the composing of this font. His work has helped the writing of Balinese characters in word processing application like Microsoft Word. Hopefully, there would be more creative software helping the development and learning of Balinese language so it would not come into extinction or be far left behind with the modern life. President of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin made the announcement, saying the plants would reopen only after the government ensure “enough security”. Tensions have been brewing at Ashulia and other textile manufacturing zones in recent months following the abduction and murder of a top garment union leader in April. Unions have accused Bangladesh’s feared security forces of killing him. US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton demanded an independent probe into the incident when she visited the country last month.

BUKITTINGGI - Mount Marapi in West Sumatra province spewed volcanic ash up to 500 meters into the sky on Sunday morning. “The volcano spewed volcanic ash for about 10 minutes starting at around 08.30 a.m.,” Mubarak, who lived on the slope of the volcano said on Sunday. “The volcanic ash fell on around the volcano`s slope,” he said. Before spewing volcanic ash, the 2,891-meter high volcano released white thick smoke as high as 50 meters from its crater, he said. Since its alert status was raised on August 3, 2011, the volcano had spewed white smoke and volcanic ash almost everyday, he said. The Bukittinggi Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG) still maintains the volcano`s alert status at the second highest
alert level. “PVMBG still recommends keeping the volcano at the second highest alert status and declaring it off-limits to anyone climbing within 3 km of its peak,” PVMBG officer Warseno said. The volcano has spewed thick smoke and volcanic ash almost every day since it began showing signs of increased activity on August 3, 2011. Mt Marapi is one of the active volcanoes in West Sumatra. It sent out sulfuric volcanic ash 1,000 meters into the sky on August 3 last year. The ash fell onto a number of areas, such as Agam, Tanahdatar, Padangpariaman, and Padangpanjang. The volcano last erupted in 2005. When inactive, the mountains adjacent to Mt Singgalang and Mt Tandikek have always been a destination for climbers from within and outside West Sumatra. Spain set for tougher test against Croatia Reuters
GDANSK - After thrashing an accommodating Ireland side 4-0, holders Spain may find Croatia a tougher nut to crack when they meet in Gdansk on Monday in a game that will decide who tops Euro 2012 Group C. A 2-2 draw would put both sides into the quarter-finals even if third-placed Italy beat Ireland and a defeat would probably mean an early flight home. Spain played sparkling football against Ireland when the recalled Fernando Torres scored twice but the world champions are wary of a dangerous Croatia side who are unlikely to stand around watching Iberian artistry. KRAKOW, Poland - Giovanni Trapattoni may be a proud Italian but he knows he has a professional duty as Ireland coach to try his hardest to deny Italy a passage into the Euro 2012 quarterfinals on Monday. Italian media is obsessed with fears Spain and Croatia will play out a 2-2 draw in the other Group C game and knock out the Azzurri even if they beat the Irish in Poznan. Such is 73-year-old Trapattoni’s standing in the game, though, that no one is questioning his loyalties. Ireland have been eliminated after two heavy Group C defeats and Monday’s swansong in the final group match could be the last major tournament appearance for the likes of 31-yearold Robbie Keane who will not want to bow out with a whimper. GDANSK - After thrashing an accommodating Ireland side 4-0, holders Spain may find Croatia a tougher nut to crack when they meet in Gdansk on Monday in a game that will decide who tops Euro 2012 Group C. A 2-2 draw would put both sides into the quarter-finals even if third-placed Italy beat Ireland and a defeat would probably mean an early flight home. KRAKOW, Poland - Giovanni Trapattoni may be a proud Italian but he knows he has a professional duty as Ireland coach to try his hardest to deny Italy a passage into the Euro 2012 quarterfinals on Monday. Five climbers on an expedition to scale the mountain were caught up in the avalanche on Thursday, an official at Miyagi Workers Alpine Federation, the organiser of the tour, told AFP. Union leader Babul Akter Thursday claimed that manufacturers at Ashulia had agreed to raise wages. Some owners also announced that they would raise the wages to help workers cope with increases in rent. But the BGMEA, which represents all of the country’s 4,500 garment factories, denied sealing any deal with the unions. “It’s a lie, total lie. We raised workers salaries by 82 percent just 18 months ago. It’s impossible to
raise salaries again,” Mohiuddin said. In 2010, Bangladesh garment factories were hit by months of violent protests that forced the government and factory owners to agree to increase wages by 80 percent, or a minimum $37 per month. The export of garments, which made $19 billion for the impoverished country last year, is the mainstay of the economy of Bangladesh, accounting for 80 percent of its total shipments. Tensions have been brewing at Ashulia and other textile manufacturing zones in recent months following the abduction and murder of a top garment union leader in April. BUKITTINGGI - Mount Marapi in West Sumatra province spewed volcanic ash up to 500 meters into the sky on Sunday morning. “The volcano spewed volcanic ash for about 10 minutes starting at around 08.30 a.m.,” Mubarak, who lived on the slope of the volcano said on Sunday. “The volcanic ash fell on around the volcano`s slope,” he said. Before spewing volcanic ash, the 2,891-meter high volcano released white thick smoke as high as 50 meters from its crater, he said. Since its alert status was raised on August 3, 2011, the volcano had spewed white smoke and volcanic ash almost everyday, he said. The Bukittinggi Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG) still maintains the volcano`s alert status at the second highest
alert level. “PVMBG still recommends keeping the volcano at the second highest alert status and declaring it off-limits to anyone climbing within 3 km of its peak,” PVMBG officer Warseno said. The volcano has spewed thick smoke and volcanic ash almost every day since it began showing signs of increased activity on August 3, 2011. Mt Marapi is one of the active volcanoes in West Sumatra. Business chiefs pledge to value earth’s natural assets

RIO DE JANEIRO - Some 39 chief executives of banks, investment funds and insurance firms Saturday pledged at a Rio+20 business forum Saturday to integrate the Earth’s natural capital into loans and investments. Twenty years after the first Earth Summit highlighted the importance of the natural environment, they unveiled a “Natural Capital Declaration” that commit their companies also to reporting or disclosing on the theme of natural capital and accounting for natural capital in accounting frameworks. Natural capital comprises Earth’s natural assets (soil, air, water, flora and fauna) and the ecosystem services flowing from them. Neither these services nor the stock of natural capital that pro-
vides them are adequately valued compared to social and financial capital, the signatories said. The declaration calls on the private and public sectors to work together to create the conditions necessary to “maintain and enhance natural capital as a critical economic, ecological and social asset.” It also urges policy-makers at the UN-sponsored Rio+20 conference to move forward in crafting legislation and regulations that can spur the development of financial products and services that sustain the earth’s natural capital. Among those who signed were chief executives of China Merchants Bank, National Australia Bank, Japan’s Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Holding and China’s Shenzhen Development Bank. The World Wide Fund for Na-
ture (WWF), the Carbon Disclosure Project, Fauna and Flora International and Conservation International were the first four nongovernmental, not-for-profit organisations to back the initiative. “The private sector must build momentum post-Rio to ensure that valuing natural capital becomes embedded into both public and private sector investment decisions,” said WWF’s Director General Jim Leape. “To achieve this, new indicators may be needed and governance arrangements may need to change. The private sector has a key role to play,” he added. World leaders are to meet here June 20-22 to mull prospects for spurring sustainable development that would reconcile economic growth with poverty eradication and environmental protection.
The IMF is one of three organizations Mariano Rajoy’s government turned to for an assessment of the state of Spain’s banking sector ahead of a C100 billion ($125 billion) bailout for failing lenders. The latest IMF document, released Friday, was not part of a bank sector report, but one of regular economic analyses issued on the state of Spain’s economy. It was critical of how the country had missed its deficit reduction target in 2011, despite insisting “until almost the end of the year that the deficit was on track.” Spain’s deficit for 2011 had to be revised upward twice to finish at 8.9 percent of economic output, instead of the 3 percent maximum level set by the European Union. Rajoy has set a goal of reducing the deficit to 5.3 percent of GDP in 2012. The IMF report called that goal “very ambitious” and said it would “likely be missed.” Rajoy said the IMF proposals, contained in the Friday report, were only suggestions and he would not implement them for now. onstrators marched late Saturday in at least three Spanish cities to protest what they said was disgraceful mismanagement of banks that had left them on the verge of bankruptcy. In Madrid the protesters gathered outside the headquarters Bankia SA, a bank that has requested euro19 billion ($23.9 billion) in state aid and has euro32 billion ($40.3 billion) in toxic assets on its books. Bankia is one of five domestic Spanish banks assessed by the IMF in its June 9 financial stability report as having heavy exposure to corporate and retail real estate lending. In Friday’s report, the IMF also suggested that Rajoy’s government increase value-added tax — or VAT, a type of sales tax — and eliminate a recently re-introduced deduction on mortgage payments for first-time homebuyers. The previous Socialist government boosted VAT to 18 percent and also reduced public sector pay by 5 percent in 2010. Rajoy has since frozen wages but resisted cutting them and hiking sales tax, as the economy enters a double-dip recession.

Probably, you have watched or are going to watch arja operetta or Ramayana Ballet during the visit in Bali. It would be more convenient if it is enjoyed while having dinner of Balinese cuisine. At the same time, you watch the beauty of culture and taste the delicacy of local culinary. You may hear the language spoken by players or puppeteer was not understandable. Of course, it is Balinese language. As Japanese and Chinese, Balinese language also has its own characters. They consist of some 18 main characters and 10 vowel sounds. Ordinarily, Balinese characters are used to write palm-leaf manuscript or lontar. Such characters are incised with sharp knife
or stylus. When the writing works have completed, they should be rubbed with a blend of oil and lamp shoot to blacken them. So they are visible easily. Since the works were performed manually, the copying of a manuscript took a long time. At a glance, Balinese characters look like Old Javanese, Tamil (India). It is inseparable from historical aspect where they had similarity of genealogical lines. Today, Balinese characters still have restricted use, namely at school for local subject from elementary school to senior high school. It is becoming the responsibility of local government to preserve and develop Balinese language in order it could survive in the midst of the growth of other languages like Bahasa Indonesia and foreign languages.
Balinese language poses a medium and spirit of Balinese culture. To preserve Balinese culture should also simultaneously maintain and use of Balinese language in daily life. In other words, speaking Balinese language also characterizes one of the identities as a Balinese. Among the use of other languages, Balinese language should remain to give a space to grow and develop. Other than speaking and teaching it at schools, it should also accommodate the need of modern community or use in wider functions of language. Balinese community receives abundant heritages of lontar or palm-leaf manuscripts from the predecessors retained by individuals and museums. They carry many aspects of knowledge, ranging from
philosophy, local healing, literature, architecture, agriculture, herbal practice, astrology and so forth. Therefore, if they could be interpreted and presented in popular language, they could become attractive information for young generation and saleable books for commercial needs. Today, there is also a trend of poising the tradition with modern science namely by re-interpreting the indigenous wisdoms that are relevant to the current time. People will get balanced inputs from the past and current orientation. Of course, such treasures will be beneficial for the conservation and future development of Balinese culture because it stays in touch with its original roots. Young generation should be introduced to these roots at early stage. Later, they will not
lose their identity and even could feel proud of it. Moreover, it could give them inspiration in making their creativities, either in fine arts, performance, traditional architecture or herbal healings. Thanks to modern technology, the writing of Balinese characters now can be made easy by Bali Simbar font. It is the innovative thinking of I Made Suatjana (1986) lies behind the composing of this font. His work has helped the writing of Balinese characters in word processing application like Microsoft Word. Hopefully, there would be more creative software helping the development and learning of Balinese language so it would not come into extinction or be far left behind with the modern life. The victim did not want to be examined at Abiansemal Police by reason that she still traumatized. Ultimately, the investigators were forced to proactively visit the victim for the examination. Chief of Abiansemal Police, Putu Astawa, confirmed if his party proactively handled the case in examining the victim. It was taken because the investigator would like to immediately finalize the case. Moreover, the victim and her family were said to just spend holiday in Bali. “Examination of the victim is carried in her villa because she was not willing to be examined at police station,” said Chief Astawa, Friday (Jun 15). When asked about the information saying if the victim was reluctant to report the case, Chief Astawa denied it. He explained the victim’s party was not reluctant to report the case. However, they assessed the investigation would
take long time. “The correct one is that her party did not want to report. Yet, since they were holidaying here (Bali— Ed), they thought the process would take a long time. After we coaxed and made consultation with the consulate, they were ultimately willing to be examined,” he said. His party also convinced if the investigation would not take long time. Information stated that the incident happened in at 3 pm in the afternoon known by a motorcycle mechanic named Nengah Sari (38) from Telun Wayah, Talibeng Village, Karangasem who ahs a shop on the south side of the burnt building which at the time he was fixing a motorcycle owned by Gusti Ketut Kerta. The building consists of three shop spaces which the north used as a medication place by a health worker named Kadek Sumerta from Banjar Meregan, Klungkung, then the middle an essential shop owned by Wayan Nemu (57) from Jabon, while the other one was garage owned by Nemu and his son Putu Martawan who works as a contracted worker at Industrial and Trade Agency of Klungkung. At the time a Kijang car was parked inside the garage which so Sari tried to save it. Yet knowing there are several gas tubes inside one of the spaces, Sari avoided risking his life as the fire got bigger. RIYADH - Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah will bury his former heir, Crown Prince Nayef, in Mecca on Sunday, and must now name a new successor to rule the world’s biggest oil exporter. The most likely candidate to take the position to succeed the 89-year-old king is Prince Salman, 76, and like all former kings a son of Saudi Arabia’s founder Abdulaziz ibn Saud. “There will be a meeting where the next crown prince will be decided. If you take a historical perspective it has always been done in an orderly and organized manner. Prince Salman fits the profile in many ways,” said Khaled Almaeena, editor in chief of the Saudi Gazette. Salman, who is seen as a pragmatist with a strong grasp of the intricate balance of competing princely and clerical interests that dominate Saudi politics, was named defense minister last year. The appointment of a new crown prince is not likely to
change the kingdom’s position on foreign or domestic policy, but King Abdullah’s new heir will face a range of major challenges when he one day becomes king. Saudi Arabia has a rapidly growing population and an economy that is heavily reliant on oil exports. It also faces a threat from al Qaeda and a regional rivalry with Iran. “Certainly they are going to continue to focus on the relationship with the U.S., and continue to make efforts to properly husband their abundant natural resources of oil,” said Robert Jordan, U.S. ambassador to Riyadh from 2001 to 2003. Although most analysts believe it highly unlikely that Salman will not be chosen as crown prince, the ultimate decision may rest with a family Allegiance Council called in to approve King Abdullah’s decision. Unlike in European monarchies, the Saudi succession does not pass from father to eldest son, but has moved along a line of brothers born to Ibn Saud. Second death in Scottish Legionnaires’ outbreak

A second person has died following an outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease in Scotland which has led to almost 90 confirmed or suspected cases, health authorities said Friday. The outbreak in Edinburgh has already claimed the life of a 56-year-old man and there have been 41 confirmed cases and 48 suspected cases so far, the local health authority said. Ten people remain in a critical condition in intensive care. The latest death, at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, was reportedly a man in his 40s. Health officials said he had significant pre-existing health problems. Scotland’s health minister Nicola Sturgeon said the number of cases was unlikely to rise. “Despite this sad and tragic development, it remains the case that we believe the outbreak to have peaked. However, we continue to monitor the situation carefully,” she said. Britain’s Health and Safety Executive and Edinburgh City Council are still investigating the source of the outbreak, with their probe so far focusing on industrial cooling towers in the southwest of the city. Improvement notices have been issued to two firms, a distillery and a pharmaceutical company, about the cooling towers, although authorities have said they are not necessarily the source. Legionnaires’ disease is contracted through the inhalation of contaminated water droplets and is not known to be transmitted from person to person.

JIUQUAN, China — China launched its most ambitious space mission yet on Saturday, carrying its first female astronaut and two male colleagues in an attempt to dock with an orbiting module and work on board for more than a week. The Shenzhou 9 capsule lifted off as scheduled at 6:37 p.m. (1037 GMT) from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center on the edge of the Gobi Desert. All systems functioned normally and, just over 10 minutes later, it opened its solar panels and entered orbit. The launch was declared a success by space program chief Chang Wanquan, a People’s Liberation Army general who sits on the ruling Communist Party’s powerful central military commission — underscoring the program’s close military ties. Female astronaut Liu Yang, 33, and two male crew members — mission commander and veteran astronaut Jing Haipeng, 45, and newcomer Liu Wang, 43 — are to dock the spacecraft with a prototype space lab launched last year in a key step toward building
a permanent space station. All three are experienced pilots and officers in the Chinese air force. Two of the astronauts will live and work inside the module to test its life-support systems while the third will remain in the capsule to deal with any unexpected emergencies. China is hoping to join the United States and Russia as the only countries to send independently maintained space stations into orbit. It is already one of just three nations to have launched manned spacecraft on their own. Another manned mission to the module is planned later this year, while possible future missions could include sending a man to the moon. The space program is a source of enormous national pride for China, reflecting its rapid economic and technological prog-
ress and ambition to rank among the world’s leading nations. The selection of the first female astronaut is giving the program an additional publicity boost. On a state visit in Denmark, President Hu Jintao congratulated everyone connected with the mission. “I urge you to carry forward the spirit ... and make new contributions to advance the development of our country’s manned space mission,” Hu said in a statement read to technicians at Jiuquan. The astronauts are expected to reach the module, called Tiangong 1, on Monday. Now orbiting at 343 kilometers (213 miles) above Earth, the module is only a prototype, and plans call for it to be replaced by a larger permanent space station due for completion around 2020.

Scientists to strap cameras to Hawaiian seals HONOLULU — Hawaiian monk seals need an image makeover. Some fishermen blame the endangered species for stealing their catch. There are unfounded rumors that they devour and deplete fish stocks. And at least four of them have been killed by humans in Hawaii since late last year. To help correct the misconceptions, government scientists plan to glue submersible cameras onto the seals’ backs, using the footage to prove to fishermen the animals are not harming their way of life. It may even end up on reality TV. “It’s following seals to have them tell their own story,” Charles Littnan, lead scientist for the National Marine Fisheries Service’s Hawaiian Monk Seal Research Program. They expect to see the seals dive for eels and fish on the ocean floor. The “Crittercams,” provided by the National Geographic Society, are the latest tactic to protect a population that is down to just 1,100 in Pacific Ocean waters around Hawaii. The killings were painful blows to a species on course to disappear in 50 to 100 years. The deaths have come as resentment simmers while the species experiences a modest rebound around Kauai, Oahu and other islands where Hawaii’s humans live. There have been cases of people pestering seals: state officials found an Oahu teenager throwing rocks at a seal at a wildlife sanctuary in January. On Friday, the state said a court fined him $1,000 and sentenced him to 80 hours of community service for trespassing and harassing the monk seal. Archaeological evidence — like monk seal bones in a human trash pit dating between the 15th and 18th centuries — shows the seals were around on these islands long ago. But most were hunted for their meat and fur by the early 1900s. The seals were then generally only found among tiny, remote atolls northwest of Hawaii’s main islands.

As the premiere presentation was Gitanjali Creation Gamelan entitled Kidung Kasmaran (Love Song) composed by I Wayan Darya, representing an expression of profound longing for love idol of the heart. Kidung Kasmaran was collaboration of music and beautifully nuanced pop song packed with mellow melodies composition. Subsequently, it was resumed with Creation Legong entitled Pradhana under direction of I Komang Dedi Diana and Ni
Kadek Darmanti. Another intriguing presentation was Creation Gamelan drawing the admiration of spectators entitled Badeng directed by I Made Subandi. As a finale, the Alit Sundari Gamelan Troupe staged a fragment entitled Purana Khayangan Payogan Agung telling about the history of a sanctum named Payogan Agung Temple. According to the Head of Alit Sundari Gamelan Troupe, preparation for the Gong Kebyar show involving approximately150 personnel as representatives of Gianyar Regency was commenced in January. He said he was very happy and pleased to be the envoy of Gianyar Regency. Besides, he was also proud because he could present the best in the Gong Kebyar parade for adult category. Such performance was a good opportunity to foster his men to demonstrate and hone their potential for regeneration. Criticized, Jalan Bypass Soekarno constantly continues Tabanan (Bali Post)—
Criticism expressed by some legislators of Tabanan House related to the Jalan Bypass Soekarno eventually receded. Regent of Tabanan, Ni Putu Eka Wiryastuti, officially named the national road. Such decision was set forth in the Regent Decree No. 170/20112 dated May 29, 2012. It stipulated the road section starting from the Vishnu Murti statue in Kediri to Adipura statue at Pesiapan was named Jalan Ir. Sukarno. As planned, the inauguration of the road naming would be held on Monday (Jun 18). Spokesperson of Tabanan Government, Putu Dian Setiawan, justified about the schedule of the road naming inauguration. He asserted the naming with Sukarno served as an expression of respect and honor as well as commemoration of services extended by the Proclaimer Father. “It poses our sincere tribute to Bung Karno,” he said on Friday (Jun 15). During the road inauguration, said Dian, the Tabanan bypass road section would be completely closed for 10 hours starting 6:00 a.m. to 15:00 p.m. local time. The closure started from the intersection of Vishnu Murti Statue in Kediri to Adipura Statue at
Pesiapan. “The road inauguration ceremony is centered at the Adipura monument,” said Dian. During the closure, the road users would be diverted to alternative route to the town of Tabanan. Since the traffic flow was ascertained to be crowded, Jalan Gajah Mada downtown would be made two-way lane. He hoped the entire community could provide support and acknowledgement related to the closure. Meanwhile, the Head of Tabanan Transportation, Communications and Informatics Agency, Agus Harta Wiguna, explained the road users from Denpasar would be diverted to the town of Tabanan through Vishnu Murti Statue. Then, road users from Gilimanuk would be diverted to the town
through Adipura Statue. As reported previously, a legislator of the Tabanan Golkar faction, Ketut Loka Antara, deplored the naming plan to Jalan Bypass Kediri-Pesiapan with the name of Soekarno. Conversely, Chairman of the Branch Executive Board of Tabanan Pancasila Youth proposed to the Regent of Tabanan to use the name of local hero or Bali tourism name, where one of which was Jatiluwih or Bedugul. This politician argued the figure of Sukarno had been honored as a national hero. On that account, he suggested to local government to highlight local heroes or local potential for the road naming. In just four months January-April 2012 the VCT Clinic of Sanglah Hospital received 138 HIV Positive patients with 26 out of 131 patients positive of HIV on January, 40 out of 138 on February, 37 out of 99 on March and 35 out of 123 on April as stated by Head of Non Hospitalized Patients, dr. Dayu Miswarihati, met last Friday (15/6). This total is mostly on males with its risk factor on heterosexual intercourse with age range 20-39 years old. In 2011 it was noted 53 patients died due to HIV and usually hospitalized in normal rooms usually who uses government health insurances such as Nusa Indah room that became the place for infectious disease patients such as rabies, bird flu, TB , tropical diseases and HIV unless they have the budget to be on VIP rooms. For TB patients they were treated at one space as it is infectious through droplets or saliva and so separated yet those who got TB during HIV infected will be separated as HIV patients are weak and its treatment is different. Right now the only medicine that could decrease HIV virus inside the body is ARV (Anti Retro Viral) where it should be drunk all their life. According to Ni Nyoman Sri Sutarni, AMK, CST Care Support and Treatment of Sanglah Hospital stated since VCT was opened in August 2004, those active consuming ARV reached 1215 people out of the 1800 people initialed noted down. “Some died, lost contact due to moving places or not extending it and so until now those active consuming are that much,” Sutarni stated. Not all HIV patients took ARV at Sanglah Hospital but also at Yayasan Kerti paraja Foudnation. ARV has three tips and if there are resistance going on, then it has to be changed to ARV line 2 that is more expensive. This resistance could be caused due to not drinking it routinely or it doesn’t suit the patient. Until now HIV Patients with this type of medicine reached 52 people which four of them are children. These medicines were given for free yet for line 2 supplies are not as much so it has to be given as needed and efficiently. (san)

Ahead of planting season, the fertilizer stock is ascertained to be in safe condition up to few months to come. Therefore, farmers are appealed not to worry about shortages of fertilizer and the threat of price hike. It is indicated by the fertilizer stocks remaining to be stacked in the marketing office warehouse of Pupuk Kalimantan Timur (PKT) of Bali branch. “Fertilizer stock existing in our warehouse has included the allocation to meet the needs of the Corporate-based Food Production Improvement Program (GP3K) in next July,” said the Head of PKT Bali Branch Offices, Imam Sujono. He further said the needs of urea fertilizer in Bali to meet the market demand in July ranged from 2,000 to 2,500 tons. Meanwhile, the stock owned by PKT Bali fertilizer per June 13, 2012 had exceeded the estimated needs for the upcoming planting season and GP3K. Regarding the current stock of fertilizer, Imam said that urea fertilizer belonging to PKT Bali Branch amounted to 5,010 tons, while NPK reached 64,850 tons. “We are optimistic to meet the needs of farmers, considering the existing stock has far exceeded the demand. Moreover, in the near future the supply of NPK fertilizer would be increased again as much as 500 tons from East Java and 1,500 tons from Bontang. Similarly, urea supply will also be added 3,200 tons. At the moment, they are still being unloaded at Celukan Bawang Harbor,” he explained. Previously a number of farmers worried about the scarcity of fertilizers in the market, whereas the fertilizer stocks in Bali had been adequate and even exceeded the need. It happened because farmers were reluctant to make definitive drafting of group needs (RDKK) as a condition of initial purchase of the subsidized urea fertilizer. “It’s the main issue in this matter. In fact, Bali farmers are unable to be independent, so please do not be abandoned. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

NEW YORK — New York City police are investigating whether shots were fired inside a nightclub during a bottle-throwing brawl involving singer Chris Brown and Drake’s entourage. Some witnesses report hearing shots during the dust-up Thursday morning at W.i.P in SoHo, but no one reported seeing a gun. Police are looking into the claims. Chris Brown, his girlfriend and his bodyguard were among eight injured during the fight inside the club. Police say members of Drake’s entourage stopped Brown as he was leaving. The fight escalated and bottles were thrown. Brown spoke with police; Drake has not. Drake’s representatives say he was on his way out when the fight broke out and did not injure anyone. A manager of a club in the same building was arrested Friday on an unrelated violation.

JAKARTA - Within the first three months of this year, the foreign tourist visit reached 1.90 million, or an increase of 11.01 percent compared to the same period last year coming to 1.71 million people.
