The new record label is dedicated to the development of blues artists. The label’s music will be distributed by Capitol Music Group’s Blue Note Records. Aykroyd and John Belushi originally performed as the sunglass-
clad siblings on “Saturday Night Live” and later in the 1980 film “The Blues Brothers.” Aykroyd said in a statement Monday that he’s excited for the label to find the next generation of blues performers. The airport management has sent a Notice to Airman (Notamn) number A0068/16, dated January 16, 2015, to all the flight carriers and airports across the world in order to manage the schedules of their flights according to the condition. Meanwhile, the delivery of groceries so far is still running normally. According to him, the delivery of groceries was still running normally. But the delivery of groceries and passengers would increase three days before Nyepi. At that time, the crossing to Nusa Penida was usually made for three to four times depending on the number of passengers. So far, the crossing to Nusa Penida was admitted to still run normally. It is only done twice, namely in the morning and afternoon.
Sedana Yoga said that weather condition was still normal in the waters of Nusa Penida. So, there was no delayed crossing last Sunday. But in anticipating the immense number of passengers that will be crossing, the port also prioritizes the delivery of ritual ingredients to Nusa Penida. “This time we are prioritizing the delivery of ritual ingredients so that they can be used in Nusa Penida,” he said, Sunday. Based on observation at Bias Port, Kusamba, the delivery of goods did not only increase in the route of Kusamba to Nusa Penida. Conversely, the delivery of many coconut leaves and piglets even also increased from Nusa Penida to Klungkung mainland. One of the traders, A.A. Ngurah, when met last Sunday sighed because the price of goods in Klungkung mainland began to rise up to 20 percent ahead of Nyepi. As a trader, it even made him unable to do much because the price of goods in Nusa Penida would likely rise up to 50 percent. “The price of goods on Nusa Penida is definitely much higher than in the Klungkung mainland, sir, because people must pay porterage and shipping costs,” he explained. BANGLI - Soaring price of rice in the market since a few weeks ago ranging from IDR 11,000 per kilogram, in fact, becomes a blessing for rice milling business. Since the past three weeks, the entrepreneurs of rice milling have been overwhelmed to meet the increasing demand of rice by 50 percent. Ketut Sudiarti, one of the rice milling owners from Sulahan village, Susut said that before the price of rice soared, only few people who bought rice to her rice milling building. However, since the price increase of rice in the market, her factory was always visited by consumers. It significantly influenced the proceeds of sales. She said the demand for rice increased by 50 percent. However, such a demand made her overwhelmed because her rice was often out of stock.
She said further that high demand for rice to her factory happened because the price offered was much cheaper than the price in the market. Each kilogram of rice was sold for IDR 9,500, while the market price reached IDR 11,000 per kilogram. “The price of rice here is much cheaper than in the market. As a result, many people buy here. Sometimes we are overwhelmed as out of stock,” she said. Similar condition was also experienced by rice milling owner at Demulih village, Susut,
Wayan Sujati. High price of rice in the market caused the rice stock posing the payment of milling services to sell out in relatively short time. She said the demand for rice increased by 60 percent. Unfortunately, due to shortage of grain supply, she was unable to produce rice in large quantities. This condition had an impact on the fulfillment of demand for rice. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

WASHINGTON - America’s young adults want news, but few want to read a newspaper. And most stumble onto news while on Facebook or other social networks. Those are among the findings of a survey released Monday of 18to 34-year-olds by a project of the American Press Institute and the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. Some 85 percent of “millennials” surveyed said that keeping up with news is important to them and 69 percent said they get news daily. The researchers said the study appears to allay concerns that young adults are apathetic about the world around them. The millennial generation “spends more time on social networks, often on mobile devices. The worry is that millennials’ awareness of the world, as a result, is narrow,” the authors said. But the findings showed “that this newest generation of American adults is anything but ‘newsless,’ passive or civically uninterested.” The study found that young adults don’t get news in the same way as their parents and grandparents. “This generation tends not to consume news in discrete sessions or by going directly to news providers,” the report said. “Instead, news and information are woven into an often continuous
but mindful way that millennials connect to the world generally, which mixes news with social connection, problem solving, social action and entertainment.” Much of the news young adults get is from social networks such as Facebook, even though they often go to these platforms for other reasons. Just 39 percent said they went online to seek out news or information and 60 percent said they “mostly bump into news” during unrelated online activity, the report said. As a result, Facebook has become a key source of news for the 18-to-34 generation: some 88 percent said they get news from the social network regularly. Some 47 percent said they got most of their news on national politics and government from Facebook, 62 percent said the social network was their primary source for news on social issues and 41 percent for international news. Facebook was the top source of news for 13 of 24 news topics, the survey found. The report said these social news consumers are often drawn into topics they might otherwise have ignored because peers are recommending and commenting on them.
Despite the notion that social media creates a polarizing “filter bubble,” some 70 percent of millennials said their social media feeds are comprised of diverse viewpoints -- evenly mixed between those who agree and disagree with them. The survey offers a bleak outlook for traditional media like newspapers hoping to boost paid subscribers. Just 12 percent of the respondents said they paid for a print newspaper subscription in the past year, while another 13 percent said they read a newspaper for which someone else pays. Just seven percent in the survey said they paid for a digital subscription to a newspaper. The authors said many of the respondents felt they should not have to pay for news. “We heard the notion that, because news is important for democracy, people feel they should not have to pay for it,” the study said. “It should be more of a civic right because it is a civic good.” The report is based on a survey of 1,046 young adults between January 5 and February 2, with a margin of error estimated at 3.8 percentage points. NEW YORK - Apple is in talks with US television networks to offer around 25 channels across any iOS device as soon as September, The Wall Street Journal reported Monday. The company has been in discussions with CBS, 21st Century Fox and Disney (owner of ABC) among other networks, as it attempts to put together a bundle of popular channels. Unlike cable bundles, which offer a long list of smaller networks, the California-based tech giant is aiming to assemble a “skinny” bundle of heavy-hitters, the Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter. However NBCUniversal, which owns channels such as NBC, USA and Bravo, is not part of the discussions.
The company was struck from the list after previous talks about a streaming television platform with NBC parent company Comcast ended in a fallout, the Journal said. In a separate deal, HBO has already partnered with Apple to provide a standalone online TV service that will launch next month on Apple’s streaming media player. The talks come as television channels and cable operators fear losing viewership to “cord cutters” who drop costly cable subscriptions and rely on online streaming, picking and choosing shows a la carte. The deal with Apple would allow networks to retain viewers, albeit on alternate platforms. The approximately 25 channels would be available on all iOS operating system devices such as iPhones, iPads and Apple TV boxes. (afp)
Yahoo sees ‘end to end’ email encryption by year-end
WASHINGTON - Yahoo said Sunday it plans to introduce “end to end encryption” for email this year to boost privacy protection for users concerned about snooping from governments or hackers. The Internet giant demonstrated new security and safety features for its email service at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, ramping up efforts to boost privacy since the 2013 revelations about government surveillance. The new security feature aims to allow non-technical people to use encryption with the click of a button after an initial setup of a few minutes. A test or beta version of the encryption software is being released for developers, and it is expected to be rolled out to users in the coming months. “Our goal is to have this available by the end of the year,” Alex Stamos, Yahoo’s chief information security officer, told AFP. “Anybody who has the ability to write an email should have no problem using our email encryption.” Privacy advocates say encryption is a valuable tool in thwarting unwanted snooping, but many users find the process daunting, with a need to create complex codes or “keys” for both the sender and receiver. Yahoo has been collaborating with Google and its Gmail service on the encryption, and the standards will be compatible, Stamos said, so Yahoo and Gmail users will be able to send each other encrypted messages with a single click. “I think anybody who uses email in the center of our life needs encryption,” Stamos said. “If you send emails to your spouse
or your lawyer or family members, you want to have these messages be confidential.” Yahoo and Google and other online giants took steps to encrypt Internet traffic in the wake of revelations of vast online surveillance programs led by the US National Security Agency, and have argued they never allowed unfettered access to their servers. The email encryption takes this further by encrypting the content on both ends of the message. Yahoo said another feature soon to be introduced would allow users to bypass the standard password, by getting a one-time code sent to a verified phone each time they log in. The move would help avoid socalled “phishing” attacks and other maneuvers that steal a user’s password, leading to potential identity theft. The two new measures are expected to improve security and privacy while still being easy to use, Stamos said. “It’s important for our products to be safe as used by normal people,” said Stamos. “Our users face a very diverse set of threats. The biggest threat is probably someone stealing their password, and their account taken over.” He added that encryption and password circumvention may also be important for users living in countries with repressive regimes. “There are a lot of Yahoo users who live in countries where their freedom of expression and freedom of association is not respected, and where the government is trying to put malware on their computers to track them,” he said. Actually, according to the Regulation of Minister of Maritime and Fisheries Affairs No.2/2015, the fishing gear belonging to trawl is prohibited. However, the use of this trawl still occurs on a number of beaches in Jembrana like at Pebuahan, Melaya and Air Kuning. A number of fishermen at Pebuahan, said they have been using
the dragged net for very long time. So, it is difficult for them to leave the habit. They considered that such fishing method was easier to produce. But they also acknowledged that the results obtained were not always satisfactory because they often got small-sized fish like sardine. Fishermen did not know if the use of the nets has been banned. They usually place nets in coastal waters and pull them together from the shore. The use of
the net is prohibited due to negative impact caused to the habitat in the waters. The Division Head of Maritime and Coastal Resource Management (PSDKP), Jembrana Maritime, Fisheries and Forestry Agency, I Ketut Wardananaya, acknowledged the persistence in the use of trawl on a number of beaches in Jembrana. The agency has also provided counseling together with the Nusantara fishing port (PPN)
at Pengambengan related to the ministerial regulation. “We actually also have sent a letter to the entire coastal villages related to the prohibition from using the beach seine,” said Wardananaya. Although the circular of the Hindu Dharma Council of Indonesia (PHDI) mentions the melasti procession can be implemented from March 18, but since Saturday (Mar. 14) several customary villages in Gianyar have started doing it. This melasti procession before Nyepi will last until March 20. Pilgrims bore sanctified effigies (pratima) accompanied with boisterous sound of balenganjur gamelan music and all the pilgrims dressed in customary prayer looked to walk hand in hand toward the shore as seen on Masceti Beach, Medahan village, Blahbatuh. A total of three groups of customary villages did melasti in the area of Masceti Beach. “The pilgrims participating in the melasti have been arriving from the morning,” said Ni Nyoman Beng, a trader on Masceti Beach from Medahan village. Typically, according to Nyoman Beng, the melasti activity has begun to take place from eight
o’clock in the morning until noon or even afternoon. The pilgrims performing melasti to Masceti Beach were mostly from the villages in Gianyar, Payangan, Tampaksiring and Ubud subdistrict, she added. This annual procession held before Nyepi usually flocks some beaches such as the Lebih, Masceti, Purnama and Gumicik Ketewel Beach. Without doubt, the activities also have an impact on the traffic along the Jalan Bypass Ida Bagus Mantra. In addition to melasti tradition before the celebration of Nyepi, thousands of people also perform melasti procession after Nyepi. In Gianyar, the tradition of melasti after Nyepi is carried out by some 28 customary villages in Blahbatuh subdistrict and some 18 customary villages in Payangan subdistrict. This tradition has lasted for generations coinciding with the full moon in April (tenth month in Balinese calendar). The villages in Blahbatuh are coalesced into the tradition of old Blahbatuh. Singapore founding father Lee’s condition worsens
SINGAPORE — The condition of Singapore’s 91-year-old founding father, Lee Kuan Yew, has worsened as he remains at the hospital where he has been treated for nearly six weeks, the government said Tuesday. Lee was admitted to Singapore General Hospital on Feb. 5 for severe pneumonia and was later put on life support. Lee’s “condition has worsened due to an infection. He is on antibiotics. The doctors are closely monitoring his condition,” the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement posted on its website. Singapore’s first prime minister, Lee ruled for 31 years until 1990,
and has been credited with transforming the city-state from a sleepy tropical port to a wealthy, bustling financial hub with one of the highest average incomes in the world. ISLAMABAD — Pakistani officials say they have executed 12 people in the country’s singlelargest day of executions, after a nationwide ban on the death penalty was lifted. The Home Minister for Punjab province, Shuja Khanzada, said authorities at several different jails in the province hanged 10 prisoners on Tuesday who had been sentenced to death in murder cases. The superintendent of the main
jail in the southern port city of Karachi, Qazi Nazir, said they had executed two people and handed their bodies over to family members. Late last year, Pakistan’s prime minister lifted the death-penalty moratorium specifically for terrorism-related cases after a December Taliban attack on a school in Peshawar killed 150 people. Asia markets rise as weak US data temper rate talk
HONG KONG - Asian equity markets mostly pushed higher Tuesday, while the dollar eased after a weak batch of US data seemed to pour cold water on talk of an early summer US interest rate hike. The weak figures on US manufacturing and industrial output helped propel US shares higher, providing a strong lead for Asia. Tokyo climbed 0.99 percent, or 190.94 points, to end at a 15-year high of 19,437.00 and Sydney rose 0.77 percent, or 44.4 points, to 5,842.1 after minutes from the Australian central bank’s latest meeting suggested it could cut rates again soon. Shanghai advanced 1.55 percent, or 53.54 points, to 3,502.85 -- its highest close since May 2008 -- and Seoul rallied 2.14 percent, or 42.58 points, to 2,029.91. However, in late trade Hong Kong reversed earlier gains to sit 0.38 percent lower. Wall Street’s three main indexes charged higher after news that US industrial production barely rose in February following two consecutive months of declines. The data was only pulled
higher by heating demand during unusually cold weather. Also, manufacturing declined for the third straight month, by 0.2 percent, as automakers curbed output. In New York the Dow surged 1.29 percent, the S&P 500 jumped 1.35 percent and the Nasdaq rallied 1.19 percent. The readings came as the Fed prepares to hold a two-day policy meeting Tuesday, which will be closely watched for clues about its timing for a rate hike. Expectations have been high for an increase as early as June after a strong jobs report at the start of the month, but they have been tempered by the latest figures, as well as data Friday showing falling producer
prices. “Investors got back into their everything-bad-is-good groove” after the factory reports, Tony Farnham, an analyst in Sydney at Patersons Securities Ltd., said, according to Bloomberg News. “There is still a general expectation that the Fed will remove the word ‘patient’ from its April rates decision commentary. This would deliver the Fed increased flexibility on the rates front, something that those investors desiring never-ending sugar fixes dread.” In foreign exchange markets the dollar was at 121.29 yen Tuesday, compared with 121.35 yen in New York late Monday. TOKYO - The Bank of Japan on Tuesday said tumbling energy prices could push inflation to zero, marking another setback for Tokyo’s attempts to kickstart the economy by conquering years of falling or stagnant prices. While the central bank repeated its view that inflation expectations were “rising on the whole” -- and it held fire on launching fresh stimulus -- the commentary strikes another blow to efforts to reach a sustained two percent inflation level. Tokyo’s campaign to stimulate spending faltered after the government raised the country’s sales tax last year to help pay down Japan’s enormous national debt. That hammered consumer spending and led to a brief recession, while falling oil rates have pulled the carpet on energy-led price increases. “The year-on-year rate of increase in the consumer price index.... excluding the direct effects of the consumption tax hike, is in the range of 0.0-0.5 percent,” the BoJ said in a statement after a two-day policy meeting. But it added that inflation “is likely to be about 0 percent for the time being, due to the effects of the decline in energy prices”. Investors will now be following BoJ chief Haruhiko Kuroda’s regular news briefing later Tuesday for clues about the bank’s plans for its massive two-year-old stimulus. Kuroda has repeatedly said the bank would further loosen monetary policy if necessary. And policymakers shocked markets in October when they expanded the scheme -- which pumps cash into the banking system to kickstart the wider economy -- to a rate of about 80 trillion yen ($679 billion) annually. “While the Bank of Japan kept its powder dry today, we still think that policymakers will step up the pace of easing at the end of next month to signal their determination to hit the two percent inflation target,” Marcel Thieliant from Capital Economics said in a commentary. The BoJ’s inflation target is a cornerstone of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s drive to resuscitate Japan’s fortunes, dubbed Abenomics, which also includes big government spending and an overhaul of the country’s highly regulated economy. Japan limped out of recession in the last quarter of 2014 with tepid 0.4 percent growth. However, inflation in January was just 0.2 percent, the lowest since a zero rate in May 2013, just after the BoJ unleashed its monetary easing programme. Prices had been on the rise, largely due to Japan having to import pricey fossil fuels to plug an energy gap left by the shutdown of atomic reactors in the wake of the 2011 Fukushima accident. But plunging oil prices have dealt another blow to the BoJ’s inflation goals, and doubts are growing over the ambitious target -- even among bank policymakers. ment in the airline,” it said in a filing with the Singapore Exchange. “These discussions may not result in a transaction. Singapore Airlines will make further public announcements as necessary.” South Korea’s Maeil Business newspaper reported on Tuesday that SIA is in talks with conglomerate
Aekyung Group to acquire about 20 percent of Jeju Air. It said both parties began the talks at the end of last year and were at the “final stage of negotiation for the acquisition price”. The report added that Aekyung Group currently holds 86.23 percent of Jeju Air.
SIA, Asia’s third largest carrier by market value according to Bloomberg News, is seeking other sources of growth as it faces tougher competition from Middle Eastern and Asian carriers, as well as from Southeast Asian budget airlines. SIA is a majority stake-holder in

Indonesia bars Australians from new visa-free list
JAKARTA - Indonesia will soon allow tourists from an additional 30 countries to visit without Australia have deteriorated in a visa, a minister said, but neighbouring Australia was left off the list amid a row over looming recent months as Jakarta prepares to execute two Australian drug executions. The move comes as Jakarta seeks to boost a faltering economy, which is growing at five-year lows, and to attract more foreign income as the rupiah rapidly weakens. The country currently only allows tourists from 15 countries, mostly in Southeast Asia, to visit without a visa. People from a number of other countries can buy a tourist visa on arrival. The 30 countries added to the list are mainly European, but also include China and several others in Asia, the United States, and some nations in the Middle East
and Africa, Tourism Minister Arief Yahya said. “People who want to travel to Indonesia won’t need to worry about a visa any more,” Yahya said late Monday, as he announced the changes. “We hope that we can attract an additional one million foreign tourists,” he added, saying the policy could bring in an extra $1 billion a year and that he hoped it would come into effect next month. JAKARTA - More than one thousand people joined a series of activities organized to mark the National Entrepreneurship Movement (GKN) aimed at boosting the culture of entrepreneurship in the community. “The GKN in Makassar is organized at the Celebes Convention Center, Makassar, and has the participation of young entrepreneurs, and those interested in becoming entrepreneurs,” Prakoso Budi Susetyo, the deputy-in-charge of human resource development of the Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) Ministry, stated on Tuesday. Cooperatives and SMEs Minister A.A.G.N. Puspayoga officially flagged off the GKN activities in Makassar, South Sulawesi. The GKN activities included an integrated training on Cooperatives Public Campaign attended by 450 people, a teleconference of entrepreneurship training attended by 400 participants, and a training on “Understanding Cooperatives for Apparatus” attended by 30 people. The minister stated that trainings are important to improve the capacity of human resources engaged in SMEs, so that they can upgrade their businesses from micro to small-scale businesses and later to medium-scale
businesses. He also urged entrepreneurs to join cooperatives in order to establish cooperation and develop their businesses. Several businessmen, university students, members of strategic groups, farmers, and fishermen participated in the GKN activities. “Some of them come from the islands surrounding Sulawesi, and most of them are fishermen,” the minister said. Earlier, Minister Puspayoga remarked that the number of entrepreneurs in Indonesia is only 1.65 percent of the country’s population, and thus, the GKN is a strategic move to boost entrepreneurship. He noted that the number of entrepreneurs in Singapore is around seven percent of the population, and it is five percent respectively in Malaysia and Thailand. “The movement is expected to increase the number of entrepreneurs to at least two percent,” he stated. The minister lauded the movement initiated by the state-owned Bank Mandiri. “Some 98 percent of our businessmen are categorized as small and medium entrepreneurs who either do business on their own or join cooperatives. NEW DELHI — India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Tuesday that he was “deeply concerned” about the recent rape of a nun and the destruction of a church, but Christian groups said his words did little to dispel the fear gripping the tiny community since his rightwing Hindu government came to power. “We are feeling very, very vulnerable,” said John Dayal, a Christian leader and social activist, on the sidelines of a conference of Indian Christian groups. Over the weekend a nun in her 70s was gang-raped by a group of men in the eastern state of West Bengal. The men who attacked the Convent of Jesus and Mary School in Nadia district, 80 kilometers (50 miles) northeast of the state capital of Kolkata, also ransacked the chapel and destroyed holy items, police said. A day later, a church in the northern Haryana state was destroyed and the vandals planted a flag with the name of the Hindu god Rama, news reports said. While sexual violence is pervasive in India and the motive for the rape of the nun was unclear, a slew of attacks have taken place against India’s Christian community, who make up little
more than 2 percent of the country’s 1.3 billion people. “There is a sense of insecurity that the state will not protect us. The incidents are happening all over India,” said Rev. Sunil Dandge, a pastor from the southern city of Bangalore. Modi’s massive electoral victory in May came on the back of promises to overhaul India’s economy and root out endemic corruption. But he started his foray into public life with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, a militant Hindu organization that is also the ideological parent group of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. The RSS has long been accused of stoking hatred against Muslims and Christians. While Modi played down religious issues during the campaign, wary of alienating voters, nationalist voters turned out for
him in droves. For several Hindu rightwing groupshis win has been viewed as their time to push their social and cultural agenda after years on the political fringes. Signs of trouble began to appear in December. Rightwing Hindu groups allied with the BJP conducted a series of ceremonies to convert Christians and Muslims to Hinduism. The events are called “homecomings,” with organizers saying they were reconverting people whose ancestors had been Hindu. Some of the Muslims and Christians, though, later said they’d either been paid to convert or threatened with violence if they did not. Then a series of churches were vandalized. And the rhetoric of groups like the RSS and its allies like the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, or World Hindu Council, began to get more aggressive. (ap)

Missing woman held by Thai army over alleged role in attack BANGKOK — Thai officials acknowledged Tuesday that a key witness in the 2010 shooting deaths of anti-government protesters, allegedly by soldiers, who went missing last week has been detained by authorities for suspected involvement in a recent grenade attack in the capital. Nattatida Meewangpla was taken into custody for questioning by soldiers and police before she was handed over to Bangkok authorities, Thai junta spokesman Col. Winthai Suvaree said. A day earlier, Winthai had denied allegations that authorities had detained her. “She was taken by an investigation team for questioning, in order to find out more about the case and to prevent further attacks,” Winthai told The Associated Press. “Yesterday I couldn’t locate her. Sometimes these procedures are kept as a secret because it can affect the authorities’ work on security matters.” Nattatida’s lawyer, Winyat Chatmontree, said Nattatida was taken away March 11 by a group of men believed to be military officers. She
was among at least 15 suspects for whom arrest warrants were issued for a March 7 grenade explosion at Bangkok’s Criminal Court, in which no one was hurt and only minor damage was caused. Political temperatures have risen as the junta that took power after a coup last May has tightened its clampdown on critics, assisted by allies in state agencies and the judiciary. The military rulers have banned political gatherings of five people or more and ordered security-related offenses to be handled by the military courts. Nattatida emerged from a van and was flanked by policewomen Tuesday at Bangkok’s Metropolitan Police Bureau. Police pressed multiple charges against her, including terrorism and possessing illegal explosive material. MOSCOW — The Russian military says it has brought some of its forces to the highest stage of combat-readiness as part of sweeping maneuvers in the Arctic and elsewhere in Russia. President Vladimir Putin issued the order Monday for five days of drills to check the readiness of Russia’s Northern Fleet and the military’s ability to deploy additional forces from central Russia. The Defense Ministry said Tues-
day that units from the Baltic Fleet, Southern Military District and Airborne Forces had been brought to full combat readiness. The ministry said about 50 warplanes and helicopters will be redeployed within the next day to northern airfields, while three groups of naval ships have entered the Barents Sea. The improving Germans, who have recovered after a dismal first half to the domestic season that saw them anchored in last place as recently as last month in the Bundesliga, have kept a clean sheet in their last three league games, including a 0-0 draw against Cologne on the weekend. With Neven Subotic and Mats Hummels back fit in central defence, along with fullbacks Marcel Schmelzer and Lukasz Piszczek, Dortmund’s defence has been as solid as it has been all season.
“(Against Cologne) we played another game without letting in a goal and that is something we can build on,” coach Juergen Klopp told reporters. “We want to advance to the quarter-finals and we can do this.” Dortmund boast a fine record at home in Europe having won 11 of their last 14 Champions League games at the Westfalenstadion. But in order to book a spot in the last eight they have to snap a losing run at home against Juventus, having lost all three previous encounters against the Italians in Dortmund. MILAN - Fiorentina piled on the misery for AC Milan by scoring twice in the last 10 minutes as they came from behind to win 2-1 and put more pressure on Filippo Inzaghi’s team on Monday. Rape of nun, church attacks make Indian Christians anxious
NEW DELHI — India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Tuesday that he was “deeply concerned” about the recent rape of a nun and the destruction of a church, but Christian groups said his words did little to dispel the fear gripping the tiny community since his rightwing Hindu government came to power. “We are feeling very, very vulnerable,” said John Dayal, a Christian leader and social activist, on the sidelines of a conference of Indian Christian groups. Over the weekend a nun in her 70s was gang-raped by a group of men in the eastern state of West Bengal. The men who attacked the Convent of Jesus and Mary School in Nadia district, 80 kilometers (50 miles) northeast of the state capital of Kolkata, also ransacked the chapel and destroyed holy items, police said. A day later, a church in the northern Haryana state was destroyed and the vandals planted a flag with the name of the Hindu god Rama, news reports said. While sexual violence is pervasive in India and the motive for the rape of the nun was unclear, a slew of attacks have taken place against India’s Christian community, who make up little
more than 2 percent of the country’s 1.3 billion people. “There is a sense of insecurity that the state will not protect us. The incidents are happening all over India,” said Rev. Sunil Dandge, a pastor from the southern city of Bangalore. Modi’s massive electoral victory in May came on the back of promises to overhaul India’s economy and root out endemic corruption. But he started his foray into public life with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, a militant Hindu organization that is also the ideological parent group of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. The RSS has long been accused of stoking hatred against Muslims and Christians. While Modi played down religious issues during the campaign, wary of alienating voters, nationalist voters turned out for
him in droves. For several Hindu rightwing groupshis win has been viewed as their time to push their social and cultural agenda after years on the political fringes. Signs of trouble began to appear in December. Rightwing Hindu groups allied with the BJP conducted a series of ceremonies to convert Christians and Muslims to Hinduism. The events are called “homecomings,” with organizers saying they were reconverting people whose ancestors had been Hindu. Some of the Muslims and Christians, though, later said they’d either been paid to convert or threatened with violence if they did not. Then a series of churches were vandalized. Missing woman held by Thai army over alleged role in attack BANGKOK — Thai officials acknowledged Tuesday that a key witness in the 2010 shooting deaths of anti-government protesters, allegedly by soldiers, who went missing last week has been detained by authorities for suspected involvement in a recent grenade attack in the capital. Nattatida Meewangpla was taken into custody for questioning by soldiers and police before she was handed over to Bangkok authorities, Thai junta spokesman Col. Winthai Suvaree said. A day earlier, Winthai had denied allegations that authorities had detained her. “She was taken by an investigation team for questioning, in order to find out more about the case and to prevent further attacks,” Winthai told The Associated Press. “Yesterday I couldn’t locate her. Sometimes these procedures are kept as a secret because it can affect the authorities’ work on security matters.” Nattatida’s lawyer, Winyat Chatmontree, said Nattatida was taken away March 11 by a group of men believed to be military officers. She
was among at least 15 suspects for whom arrest warrants were issued for a March 7 grenade explosion at Bangkok’s Criminal Court, in which no one was hurt and only minor damage was caused. MOSCOW — The Russian military says it has brought some of its forces to the highest stage of combat-readiness as part of sweeping maneuvers in the Arctic and elsewhere in Russia. President Vladimir Putin issued the order Monday for five days of drills to check the readiness of Russia’s Northern Fleet and the military’s ability to deploy additional forces from central Russia. The Defense Ministry said Tues-
day that units from the Baltic Fleet, Southern Military District and Airborne Forces had been brought to full combat readiness. The ministry said about 50 warplanes and helicopters will be redeployed within the next day to northern airfields, while three groups of naval ships have entered the Barents Sea. Asia markets rise as weak US data temper rate talk
HONG KONG - Asian equity markets mostly pushed higher Tuesday, while the dollar eased after a weak batch of US data seemed to pour cold water on talk of an early summer US interest rate hike. The weak figures on US manufacturing and industrial output helped propel US shares higher, providing a strong lead for Asia. Tokyo climbed 0.99 percent, or 190.94 points, to end at a 15-year high of 19,437.00 and Sydney rose 0.77 percent, or 44.4 points, to 5,842.1 after minutes from the Australian central bank’s latest meeting suggested it could cut rates again soon. Shanghai advanced 1.55 percent, or 53.54 points, to 3,502.85 -- its highest close since May 2008 -- and Seoul rallied 2.14 percent, or 42.58 points, to 2,029.91. However, in late trade Hong Kong reversed earlier gains to sit 0.38 percent lower. Wall Street’s three main indexes charged higher after news that US industrial production barely rose in February following two consecutive months of declines. The data was only pulled
higher by heating demand during unusually cold weather. Also, manufacturing declined for the third straight month, by 0.2 percent, as automakers curbed output. In New York the Dow surged 1.29 percent, the S&P 500 jumped 1.35 percent and the Nasdaq rallied 1.19 percent. The readings came as the Fed prepares to hold a two-day policy meeting Tuesday, which will be closely watched for clues about its timing for a rate hike. Expectations have been high for an increase as early as June after a strong jobs report at the start of the month, but they have been tempered by the latest figures, as well as data Friday showing falling producer
prices. “Investors got back into their everything-bad-is-good groove” after the factory reports, Tony Farnham, an analyst in Sydney at Patersons Securities Ltd., said, according to Bloomberg News. “There is still a general expectation that the Fed will remove the word ‘patient’ from its April rates decision commentary. TOKYO - The Bank of Japan on Tuesday said tumbling energy prices could push inflation to zero, marking another setback for Tokyo’s attempts to kickstart the economy by conquering years of falling or stagnant prices. While the central bank repeated its view that inflation expectations were “rising on the whole” -- and it held fire on launching fresh stimulus -- the commentary strikes another blow to efforts to reach a sustained two percent inflation level. Tokyo’s campaign to stimulate spending faltered after the government raised the country’s sales tax last year to help pay down Japan’s enormous national debt. That hammered consumer spending and led to a brief recession, while falling oil rates have pulled the carpet on energy-led price increases. “The year-on-year rate of increase in the consumer price index.... excluding the direct effects of the consumption tax hike, is in the range of 0.0-0.5 percent,” the BoJ said in a statement after a two-day policy meeting. But it added that inflation “is likely to be about 0 percent for the time being, due to the effects of the decline in energy prices”. Investors will now be following BoJ chief Haruhiko Kuroda’s regular news briefing later Tuesday for clues about the bank’s plans for its massive two-year-old stimulus. Kuroda has repeatedly said the bank would further loosen monetary policy if necessary. And policymakers shocked markets in October when they expanded the scheme -- which pumps cash into the banking system to kickstart the wider economy -- to a rate of about 80 trillion yen ($679 billion) annually. “While the Bank of Japan kept its powder dry today, we still think that policymakers will step up the pace of easing at the end of next month to signal their determination to hit the two percent inflation target,” Marcel Thieliant from Capital Economics said in a commentary. The BoJ’s inflation target is a cornerstone of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s drive to resuscitate Japan’s fortunes, dubbed Abenomics, which also includes big government spending and an overhaul of the country’s highly regulated economy. Japan limped out of recession in the last quarter of 2014 with tepid 0.4 percent growth. However, inflation in January was just 0.2 percent, the lowest since a zero rate in May 2013, just after the BoJ unleashed its monetary easing programme. Prices had been on the rise, largely due to Japan having to import pricey fossil fuels to plug an energy gap left by the shutdown of atomic reactors in the wake of the 2011 Fukushima accident. But plunging oil prices have dealt another blow to the BoJ’s inflation goals, and doubts are growing over the ambitious target -- even among bank policymakers. Aekyung Group to acquire about 20 percent of Jeju Air. It said both parties began the talks at the end of last year and were at the “final stage of negotiation for the acquisition price”. The report added that Aekyung Group currently holds 86.23 percent of Jeju Air.
SIA, Asia’s third largest carrier by market value according to Bloomberg News, is seeking other sources of growth as it faces tougher competition from Middle Eastern and Asian carriers, as well as from Southeast Asian budget airlines. SIA is a majority stake-holder in

Indonesia bars Australians from new visa-free list
JAKARTA - Indonesia will soon allow tourists from an additional 30 countries to visit without Australia have deteriorated in a visa, a minister said, but neighbouring Australia was left off the list amid a row over looming recent months as Jakarta prepares to execute two Australian drug executions. The move comes as Jakarta seeks to boost a faltering economy, which is growing at five-year lows, and to attract more foreign income as the rupiah rapidly weakens. The country currently only allows tourists from 15 countries, mostly in Southeast Asia, to visit without a visa. People from a number of other countries can buy a tourist visa on arrival. The 30 countries added to the list are mainly European, but also include China and several others in Asia, the United States, and some nations in the Middle East
and Africa, Tourism Minister Arief Yahya said. “People who want to travel to Indonesia won’t need to worry about a visa any more,” Yahya said late Monday, as he announced the changes. “We hope that we can attract an additional one million foreign tourists,” he added, saying the policy could bring in an extra $1 billion a year and that he hoped it would come into effect next month. Indonesia has long lagged behind its neighbours in attracting foreign visitors. In 2013, 8.8
million foreign visitors came to Indonesia, according to official figures, compared with 25.72 million in Malaysia and 26.55 million in Thailand. JAKARTA - More than one thousand people joined a series of activities organized to mark the National Entrepreneurship Movement (GKN) aimed at boosting the culture of entrepreneurship in the community. “The GKN in Makassar is organized at the Celebes Convention Center, Makassar, and has the participation of young entrepreneurs, and those interested in becoming entrepreneurs,” Prakoso Budi Susetyo, the deputy-in-charge of human resource development of the Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) Ministry, stated on Tuesday. Cooperatives and SMEs Minister A.A.G.N. Puspayoga officially flagged off the GKN activities in Makassar, South Sulawesi. Earlier, Minister Puspayoga remarked that the number of entrepreneurs in Indonesia is only 1.65 percent of the country’s population, and thus, the GKN is a strategic move to boost entrepreneurship. He noted that the number of entrepreneurs in Singapore is around seven percent of the population, and it is five percent respectively in Malaysia and Thailand. “The movement is expected to increase the number of entrepreneurs to at least two percent,” he stated. The minister lauded the movement initiated by the state-owned Bank Mandiri. “Some 98 percent of our businessmen are categorized as small and medium entrepreneurs who either do business on their own or join cooperatives. the dragged net for very long time. So, it is difficult for them to leave the habit. They considered that such fishing method was easier to produce. But they also acknowledged that the results obtained were not always satisfactory because they often got small-sized fish like sardine. Fishermen did not know if the use of the nets has been banned. They usually place nets in coastal waters and pull them together from the shore. The use of
the net is prohibited due to negative impact caused to the habitat in the waters. The Division Head of Maritime and Coastal Resource Management (PSDKP), Jembrana Maritime, Fisheries and Forestry Agency, I Ketut Wardananaya, acknowledged the persistence in the use of trawl on a number of beaches in Jembrana. Although the circular of the Hindu Dharma Council of Indonesia (PHDI) mentions the melasti procession can be implemented from March 18, but since Saturday (Mar. 14) several customary villages in Gianyar have started doing it. This melasti procession before Nyepi will last until March 20. Pilgrims bore sanctified effigies (pratima) accompanied with boisterous sound of balenganjur gamelan music and all the pilgrims dressed in customary prayer looked to walk hand in hand toward the shore as seen on Masceti Beach, Medahan village, Blahbatuh. A total of three groups of customary villages did melasti in the area of Masceti Beach. “The pilgrims participating in the melasti have been arriving from the morning,” said Ni Nyoman Beng, a trader on Masceti Beach from Medahan village. Typically, according to Nyoman Beng, the melasti activity has begun to take place from eight
o’clock in the morning until noon or even afternoon. The pilgrims performing melasti to Masceti Beach were mostly from the villages in Gianyar, Payangan, Tampaksiring and Ubud subdistrict, she added. This annual procession held before Nyepi usually flocks some beaches such as the Lebih, Masceti, Purnama and Gumicik Ketewel Beach. Without doubt, the activities also have an impact on the traffic along the Jalan Bypass Ida Bagus Mantra. In addition to melasti tradition before the celebration of Nyepi, thousands of people also perform melasti procession after Nyepi. In Gianyar, the tradition of melasti after Nyepi is carried out by some 28 customary villages in Blahbatuh subdistrict and some 18 customary villages in Payangan subdistrict. This tradition has lasted for generations coinciding with the full moon in April (tenth month in Balinese calendar). The villages in Blahbatuh are coalesced into the tradition of old Blahbatuh. Singapore founding father Lee’s condition worsens
SINGAPORE — The condition of Singapore’s 91-year-old founding father, Lee Kuan Yew, has worsened as he remains at the hospital where he has been treated for nearly six weeks, the government said Tuesday. Lee was admitted to Singapore General Hospital on Feb. 5 for severe pneumonia and was later put on life support. Lee’s “condition has worsened due to an infection. He is on antibiotics. The doctors are closely monitoring his condition,” the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement posted on its website. Singapore’s first prime minister, Lee ruled for 31 years until 1990,
and has been credited with transforming the city-state from a sleepy tropical port to a wealthy, bustling financial hub with one of the highest average incomes in the world. ISLAMABAD — Pakistani officials say they have executed 12 people in the country’s singlelargest day of executions, after a nationwide ban on the death penalty was lifted. The Home Minister for Punjab province, Shuja Khanzada, said authorities at several different jails in the province hanged 10 prisoners on Tuesday who had been sentenced to death in murder cases. The superintendent of the main
jail in the southern port city of Karachi, Qazi Nazir, said they had executed two people and handed their bodies over to family members. Late last year, Pakistan’s prime minister lifted the death-penalty moratorium specifically for terrorism-related cases after a December Taliban attack on a school in Peshawar killed 150 people. WASHINGTON - America’s young adults want news, but few want to read a newspaper. And most stumble onto news while on Facebook or other social networks. Those are among the findings of a survey released Monday of 18to 34-year-olds by a project of the American Press Institute and the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. Some 85 percent of “millennials” surveyed said that keeping up with news is important to them and 69 percent said they get news daily. The researchers said the study appears to allay concerns that young adults are apathetic about the world around them. The millennial generation “spends more time on social networks, often on mobile devices. The worry is that millennials’ awareness of the world, as a result, is narrow,” the authors said. But the findings showed “that this newest generation of American adults is anything but ‘newsless,’ passive or civically uninterested.” The study found that young adults don’t get news in the same way as their parents and grandparents. “This generation tends not to consume news in discrete sessions or by going directly to news providers,” the report said. “Instead, news and information are woven into an often continuous
but mindful way that millennials connect to the world generally, which mixes news with social connection, problem solving, social action and entertainment.” Much of the news young adults get is from social networks such as Facebook, even though they often go to these platforms for other reasons. Just 39 percent said they went online to seek out news or information and 60 percent said they “mostly bump into news” during unrelated online activity, the report said. As a result, Facebook has become a key source of news for the 18-to-34 generation: some 88 percent said they get news from the social network regularly. Some 47 percent said they got most of their news on national politics and government from Facebook, 62 percent said the social network was their primary source for news on social issues and 41 percent for international news. Facebook was the top source of news for 13 of 24 news topics, the survey found. The report said these social news consumers are often drawn into topics they might otherwise have ignored because peers are recommending and commenting on them.
Despite the notion that social media creates a polarizing “filter bubble,” some 70 percent of millennials said their social media feeds are comprised of diverse viewpoints -- evenly mixed between those who agree and disagree with them. The survey offers a bleak outlook for traditional media like newspapers hoping to boost paid subscribers. Just 12 percent of the respondents said they paid for a print newspaper subscription in the past year, while another 13 percent said they read a newspaper for which someone else pays. Just seven percent in the survey said they paid for a digital subscription to a newspaper. The authors said many of the respondents felt they should not have to pay for news. “We heard the notion that, because news is important for democracy, people feel they should not have to pay for it,” the study said. “It should be more of a civic right because it is a civic good.” The report is based on a survey of 1,046 young adults between January 5 and February 2, with a margin of error estimated at 3.8 percentage points. NEW YORK - Apple is in talks with US television networks to offer around 25 channels across any iOS device as soon as September, The Wall Street Journal reported Monday. The company has been in discussions with CBS, 21st Century Fox and Disney (owner of ABC) among other networks, as it attempts to put together a bundle of popular channels. Unlike cable bundles, which offer a long list of smaller networks, the California-based tech giant is aiming to assemble a “skinny” bundle of heavy-hitters, the Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter. However NBCUniversal, which owns channels such as NBC, USA and Bravo, is not part of the discussions.
The company was struck from the list after previous talks about a streaming television platform with NBC parent company Comcast ended in a fallout, the Journal said. In a separate deal, HBO has already partnered with Apple to provide a standalone online TV service that will launch next month on Apple’s streaming media player. The talks come as television channels and cable operators fear losing viewership to “cord cutters” who drop costly cable subscriptions and rely on online streaming, picking and choosing shows a la carte. The deal with Apple would allow networks to retain viewers, albeit on alternate platforms. The approximately 25 channels would be available on all iOS operating system devices such as iPhones, iPads and Apple TV boxes. (afp)
Yahoo sees ‘end to end’ email encryption by year-end
WASHINGTON - Yahoo said Sunday it plans to introduce “end to end encryption” for email this year to boost privacy protection for users concerned about snooping from governments or hackers. The Internet giant demonstrated new security and safety features for its email service at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, ramping up efforts to boost privacy since the 2013 revelations about government surveillance. The new security feature aims to allow non-technical people to use encryption with the click of a button after an initial setup of a few minutes. A test or beta version of the encryption software is being released for developers, and it is expected to be rolled out to users in the coming months. “Our goal is to have this available by the end of the year,” Alex Stamos, Yahoo’s chief information security officer, told AFP. “Anybody who has the ability to write an email should have no problem using our email encryption.” Privacy advocates say encryption is a valuable tool in thwarting unwanted snooping, but many users find the process daunting, with a need to create complex codes or “keys” for both the sender and receiver. Yahoo has been collaborating with Google and its Gmail service on the encryption, and the standards will be compatible, Stamos said, so Yahoo and Gmail users will be able to send each other encrypted messages with a single click. “I think anybody who uses email in the center of our life needs encryption,” Stamos said. “If you send emails to your spouse
or your lawyer or family members, you want to have these messages be confidential.” Yahoo and Google and other online giants took steps to encrypt Internet traffic in the wake of revelations of vast online surveillance programs led by the US National Security Agency, and have argued they never allowed unfettered access to their servers. The email encryption takes this further by encrypting the content on both ends of the message. Yahoo said another feature soon to be introduced would allow users to bypass the standard password, by getting a one-time code sent to a verified phone each time they log in. The move would help avoid socalled “phishing” attacks and other maneuvers that steal a user’s password, leading to potential identity theft. The two new measures are expected to improve security and privacy while still being easy to use, Stamos said. “It’s important for our products to be safe as used by normal people,” said Stamos. “Our users face a very diverse set of threats. The biggest threat is probably someone stealing their password, and their account taken over.” He added that encryption and password circumvention may also be important for users living in countries with repressive regimes. “There are a lot of Yahoo users who live in countries where their freedom of expression and freedom of association is not respected, and where the government is trying to put malware on their computers to track them,” he said. SEMARAPURA - Crossing activity at traditional harbor of Kusamba, Dawan, Klungkung ahead of Nyepi began to increase. The increase was not only seen in the number of passengers that would be crossing, but also in the delivery of ritual ingredients such as fruit, leaf and daily needs to Nusa Penida. Meanwhile, the delivery of groceries so far is still running normally. At that time, the crossing to Nusa Penida was usually made for three to four times depending on the number of passengers. So far, the crossing to Nusa Penida was admitted to still run normally. It is only done twice, namely in the morning and afternoon.
Sedana Yoga said that weather condition was still normal in the waters of Nusa Penida. So, there was no delayed crossing last Sunday. BANGLI - Soaring price of rice in the market since a few weeks ago ranging from IDR 11,000 per kilogram, in fact, becomes a blessing for rice milling business. Since the past three weeks, the entrepreneurs of rice milling have been overwhelmed to meet the increasing demand of rice by 50 percent. Ketut Sudiarti, one of the rice milling owners from Sulahan village, Susut said that before the price of rice soared, only few people who bought rice to her rice milling building. However, since the price increase of rice in the market, her factory was always visited by consumers. It significantly influenced the proceeds of sales. She said the demand for rice increased by 50 percent. However, such a demand made her overwhelmed because her rice was often out of stock.
She said further that high demand for rice to her factory happened because the price offered was much cheaper than the price in the market. Each kilogram of rice was sold for IDR 9,500, while the market price reached IDR 11,000 per kilogram. “The price of rice here is much cheaper than in the market. As a result, many people buy here. Sometimes we are overwhelmed as out of stock,” she said. Similar condition was also experienced by rice milling owner at Demulih village, Susut,
Wayan Sujati. High price of rice in the market caused the rice stock posing the payment of milling services to sell out in relatively short time. She said the demand for rice increased by 60 percent. Unfortunately, due to shortage of grain supply, she was unable to produce rice in large quantities. This condition had an impact on the fulfillment of demand for rice. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.
