Chris Brown returns to court after rehab dismissal Associated Press Writer
LOS ANGELES — Chris Brown is facing a court hearing over his dismissal from rehab and whether he should be given additional penalties, which could include more time behind bars. The Grammy-winning R&B singer spent the weekend in a Los Angeles jail after a judge ordered him to be arrested for violating the rules and regulations of his treatment. Court records did not elaborate on the reason for Brown’s dismissal from the facility that was treating him for anger management, substance abuse and issues related to bipolar disorder. Brown, 24, had been under court orders to remain in treatment since November, one month after he was arrested in Washington, D.C., after a man accused him of punching him in a confrontation
outside a hotel. That case is pending, and Superior Court Judge James R. Brandlin has not yet scheduled a probation violation hearing to address whether he would penalize the singer for the arrest. His attorney, Mark Geragos, did not return an email message seeking comment on the singer’s arrest. Prosecutors have not said what action they plan to take at Monday’s hearing. The judge revoked Brown’s probation in December, but refused a prosecutor’s request in February to send the singer to jail because of the Washington misdemeanor assault case. The judge has said Brown appeared to be making good progress in rehab and a probation officer gave him a favorable report at his last court hearing on Feb. 28. The singer’s arrest last week represents another stumble in his efforts to put his

Brown’s probation had been scheduled to conclude in August, but that is now unlikely because he still has 750 hours of community labor to complete and could face additional penalties for failing to complete rehab successfully. Though Disney’s “Need for Speed” was expected to take the No. 1 position at the box office, DreamWorks’ “Mr. Peabody & Sherman” took the lead, with the action film in third place. The animated movie, about the adventures of a genius dog and the human son he adopted, earned $21.2 million, according to studio estimates released Sunday. Debuting last weekend at No. 2, the 3-D kiddie-jaunt features voices from “Modern Family” stars Ty Burrell and Ariel Winter. “Our midweek numbers were very strong, indicating good and positive word of mouth,” said Chris Aronson, president of domestic distribution at Twentieth Century Fox. “If anything, this is exceeding (expectations). It’s a combination of likable characters and it’s a nostalgia play for those who are

It is based on consideration that the lands are mostly privately owned, so there is possibility to be contracted or even sold to investors. This was conveyed by a tourism practitioner from the Udayana University, I Putu Anom, in Denpasar. “Sacred zone, especially the area around the kahyangan jagat temple doubling as tourist attraction really needs to be secured and preserved because most lands around the area are private property that are most likely to be sold or transferred or leased to capital owners for the development of tourism facilities or used as a souvenir stall, restaurants, etc.,” he explained. Anom reasoned that construc-
tion of tourism facilities could reduce the temple sanctity as it happened to Besakih Temple. According to him, the land areas above the Penataran Agung to Gelap Temple were owned by local residents. This former Dean of the Faculty of Tourism, Udayana University worried that investors could target for the lands anytime. “We cannot just blame the local community as the land owner
in the sacred zone. But, we need to find a solution for the problem. One of the ways is needed the role of the Hindu Dharma Council of Indonesia (PHDI) and Customary Village General Assembly (MUDP) with coordination to the supporting devotees of the temple commonly posing the local communities around the temple,” he said. Further, he said the PHDI and MUDP in cooperation with Bali
government, county and municipal government as the extension of central government and private companies could also invite the Hindus to make a charity action. The charity, said Anom, could be used to purchase land around the sacred zone so as not to become the property of investor. “The Hindus either of civil servants or private sector employees must be invited to resolve the problem by sincere charity on the basis of sacred mind through deduction of salary approximately IDR 10,000 per month. It must be collected by the PHDI so the funds could be used to purchase lands in the sacred zone that finally can become the temple property and be
preserved,” he explained. Anom added the funds collected could also be used to help the implementation of religious ceremonies, higher priests or pinandita, training tuition of the priest prospective and oblation makers as well as the funds for the Hindu foundation in relation to human resource development in the face of global competition, scholarships for underprivileged students of Hinduism, including the Hindus entrepreneurship development. “Most importantly, these funds should be managed in a professional, honest, transparent and accountable manner so that it can be accounted for,” he concluded. DENPASAR - A villa located on Jalan Kunti I Gang Mangga, Seminyak Kuta, was raided by the officers of the Denpasar Police Narcotics Investigation Unit, Tuesday night (Mar 11). In the villa, one of the occupants was alleged to hold a drug party. It was true that Mohammad Syaiful Ali bin Shafarudin, 28, a citizen of Singapore was known to be in the fly condition in the villa room. He was then taken to the Denpasar Police to undergo further examination. Other than the suspect, police also seized drug evidence in the form of dried marijuana leaves and two ecstasy pills. “The suspect has been arrested in the Denpasar Police and the case is being developed,” said the source at police station, Sunday (Mar 16). The source explained that the raid was carried out based on the complaints from the public where in the villa was told there was an occupant making a drug party. Having been followed up, in fact, the information was correct and the suspect was caught taking drugs. “When arrested, the suspect was in fly condition,” he said. Further, the source who declined to give his name said that from the results of the search in the villa room, the officers found the leaves, seeds and stems amounting to 17.52 grams of marijuana (in package) and two pieces of ecstasy. “Indeed, the suspect stayed with her girlfriend. However, his girlfriend was not proved to taking drugs,” he explained. Meanwhile, on the same day, the officers led by Unit Chief of the Denpasar Police Narcotics Investigator, Agus Tri Waluyo, also arrested another drug abuser. The suspect was Nyoman Gede Susila, 34, a resident of Grombong hamlet, Sulang village, Dawan, Klungkung. The suspect was arrested at a house located at Jalan WR Supratman 231 Kesiman, Pentilan, East Denpasar. From the suspect, police could seize the evidence in the form of crystal meth weighing 0.21 gram. The illicit goods were wrapped in plastic clip. Aside from crystal meth, police also seized a black trousers and a roll. On the next day, the officers arrested the suspect Bambang Solekan, 31. The suspect was arrested in his boarding house on Jalan Danau Tempe Gang Asri, Sanur, Wednesday (Mar 12) around three o’clock in the afternoon. The evidence seized from the suspect included crystal meth weighing 0.16 gram wrapped in a cigarette. He was taken into detainee cell while awaiting further legal proceedings. Meanwhile, the Chief of Denpasar Police, Djoko Hariutomo, accompanied by Agus Tri Waluyo justified the arrest of the drug suspects, including the citizen of Singapore. (kmb21)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Uneasy first steps with Google Glass

NEW YORK — Shaped like a lopsided headband, Google Glass is an unassuming piece of technology when you’re holding it in your hands. You feel as if you can almost break it, testing its flexibility. Putting it on, though, is another story. Once you do, this Internet-connected eyewear takes on a life of its own. You become “The Person Wearing Google Glass” and all the assumptions that brings with it —about your wealth, boorishness or curiosity. Such is the fate of early adopters of new technologies, whether it’s the Sony Walkman, the first iPod with its conspicuous white earbuds, or the Segway scooter. Google calls the people who wear Glass “explorers,” because the device is not yet available to the general public. With its $1,500 price tag, the device is far from having mass appeal. At the South By Southwest Interactive tech jamboree in Austin this week, I counted fewer than a dozen people wearing it, including technology blogger Robert Scoble, who isn’t shy about posting pictures of himself in the shower, red-faced, water running, wearing the device. Google, like most successful technology companies, dreamers and inventors, likes to take a long view on things. It calls some of its most outlandish projects “moonshots.”
Besides Glass, these include its driverless car, balloons that deliver Internet service to remote parts of the world and contact lenses that monitor glucose levels in diabetics. There’s an inherent risk in moonshots, however: What if you never reach the moon? Ten years from now, we may look back at Google Glass as one of those short-lived bridges that takes us from one technological breakthrough to the next, just as pagers, MP3 players and personal digital assistants paved the way for the era of the smartphone. Fitness bands, too, may fit into this category. In its current, early version, Google Glass feels bulky on my face and when I look in the mirror I see a futuristic telemarketer looking back at me. Wearing it on the subway while a homeless man shuffled through the car begging for change made me feel as if I was sporting a diamond tiara. I sank lower in my seat as he passed. If Google is aiming for mass appeal, the next versions of Glass have to be much smaller and less

Scientists have crowdsourced a network of volunteers taking water samples at beaches along the U.S. West Coast in hopes of capturing a detailed look at low levels of radiation drifting across the ocean since the 2011 tsunami that devastated a nuclear power plant in Japan. With the risk to public health extremely low, the effort is more about perfecting computer models that will better predict chemical and radiation spills in the future than bracing for a threat, researchers say. Federal agencies are not sampling at the beach. The state of Oregon is sampling, but looking for higher radiation levels closer to federal health standards, said state health physicist Daryl Leon. Washington stopped looking after early testing turned up nothing, said Washington Department of Health spokesman Donn Moyer. The March 2011 tsunami off Japan flooded the Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear plant, causing radiationcontaminated water to spill into the Pacific. Airborne radiation was detected in milk and rainwater in the U.S. soon afterward. But things move much more slowly in the ocean. “We know there’s contami-
nated water coming out of there, even today,” Ken Buesseler, a senior scientist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts, said in a video appealing for volunteers and contributions. In fact, it is the biggest pulse of radioactive liquid dropped in the ocean ever, he said. “What we don’t really know is how fast and how much is being transported across the Pacific,” he added. “Yes, the models tell us it will be safe. Yes, the levels we expect off the coast of the U.S. and Canada are expected to be low. But we need measurements, especially now as the plume begins to arrive along the West Coast.” In an email from Japan, Buesseler said he hopes the sampling will go on every two or three months for the next two to three years. Two different models have been published in peer-reviewed scientific journals predicting the spread of radioactive isotopes of cesium and iodine from Fukushima. One, known as Rossi et al, shows the leading edge of the plume hitting the West Coast from southeast Alaska to Southern California by April. The other, known as Behrens et all, shows the plume hitting Southeast Alaska, British Columbia and Washington by March 2016.

Supriyadi, 56, a stall owner at roadside on Jalan Udayana said that strong winds coincided with rain around 3:30 p.m. When the incident occurred, he was in the stall and could hear the roars from the West. “It happened very quickly and as if there were fogs, I saw the wind spinning,” said the meatball trader. Meanwhile, Mrs. Lia, a (steamed) chicken betutu trader also saw a tornado around the site with mists crashing into the east. At the time, she was in the gazebo of parking lot in her Betutu Chicken Stall. She also watched the roof of the shoe kiosk owned by Sunar flew and was swept
away by the wind. She was worried if the wind would be crashing down her gazebo. The two leaders spoke after residents in Crimea voted overwhelmingly in favor of the split in a referendum that the United States, European Union and others say violates the Ukrainian constitution and international law and took place in the strategic peninsula under duress of Russian military intervention. But the White House said Obama reminded Putin that the U.S. and its allies in Europe would impose sanctions against Russia should it annex Crimea. The “national plan for a new model of urbanisation” unveiled Sunday calls for measurable improvements such as extended social benefits, improved air quality -- an issue that causes widespread public anger -- and expanded public transport. It aims for 60 percent of China’s 1.36 billion people to live in cities by 2020 and for 45 percent to have the vital urban residency registration, or “hukou”, that gives them equal access to social benefits such as education and health care. This would compare with 52.6 percent and 35.3 percent as of 2012. The stated goals include “work hard to achieve 100 million rural workers and other permanent residents obtaining urban hukou”. The change would narrow the proportion of urban residents who lack urban hukous -- a move which analysts say is crucial in improving living standards for migrants from the countryside, hundreds of millions of whom have moved to the cities in recent decades. “Urbanisation is a powerful engine for maintaining the sustainable healthy development of the economy,” the plan said. Rural Chinese, “by becoming urban residents will enjoy better public services, causing the urban consumer pool to continue to expand”, it said, calling domestic demand “a fundamental driver of China’s economic development”. China’s leaders have repeatedly pledged to retool the country’s growth model to one driven by consumer demand rather than investment. But the plan also said urbanisation will “bring huge investment demand for city infrastructure, facilities for public services and housing construction, which will provide continuing power for economic development”. Among many goals, the plan called for 99 percent of migrant children to receive nine years’ education, and 95 percent of rural labourers and others struggling to find work to receive free basic job training. It said 60 percent of cities should meet national air quality standards, up from 40.9 percent in 2010. The official news agency Xinhua stressed authorities’ commitment, saying the plan “will provide strategic and fundamental guidance for the healthy development of urbanisation across the country”.

VATICAN CITY — Christians and Muslims have joined to try to help free millions of men, women and children held in modern-day slavery, forced to work as maids, prostitutes, child soldiers and manual laborers. The Global Freedom Network launched Monday at the Vatican aims to eradicate slavery by encouraging governments, businesses, educational and faith institutions to rid their supply chains of slave labor. The initiative is the brainchild of billionaire Australian mining magnate Andrew Forrest, who founded the Walk Free Foundation in 2012 to mobilize a grass-roots movement to end slavery. Forrest, ranked 270th on Forbes’ list of the world’s richest people, used personal contacts to bring the 1.2-billion strong Catholic Church, 85-million strong Anglican Communion and al-Azhar university in Cairo, the world’s foremost seat of Sunni learning, on board with the initiative. Representatives from all three gathered Monday at the Vatican to sign an agreement to launch the project, which will be based at the Vatican and have a chief executive responsible for implementing a five-year business plan. Objectives include getting the G20 to condemn modern-day slavery, persuading 50 major corporations to commit to slavery-proofing their supply chains and convincing 160 governments to endorse a seven-year, $100 million fundraising effort to implement anti-slavery programs globally. In an interview, Forrest said it makes financial sense for countries to rid themselves of slave labor. “We have absolute economic proof that once you take slavery out of a community, that community grows and grows and grows,” he said. The Walk Free Foundation in 2013 published the “Global Slavery Index,” a country-by-country breakdown which found that some 29.8 million people were currently enslaved around the globe: child laborers harvesting cocoa in Ivory Coast, women sold for sex in Moldova, and Haitian children trafficked and forced into begging. Everyday items used in the developed world — soccer balls, bricks, diamonds and flowers — are often produced or extracted using slave labor, the report said.

NEW YORK — The self-described mastermind of the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks in the U.S. says the onetime Osama bin Laden spokesman who is on trial in New York had no role in planning military operations for al-Qaida. Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, said in a statement filed in Manhattan federal court late Sunday that Sulaiman Abu Ghaith served as an al-Qaida spokesman because he was “an eloquent, spellbinding speaker.” But Mohammed says Abu Ghaith “had nothing to do with military operations.” Abu Ghaith, who is a son-in-law of bin Laden, is charged with conspiring to kill Americans. He is the highestlevel al-Qaida figure to be tried in the U.S. since the Sept. 11 attacks. Prosecutors say he was part of al-Qaida’s deadly plot in his role as spokesman in fiery videos and as a motivational speaker at the group’s training camps in Afghanistan. Abu Ghaith’s lawyers have said the Kuwait-born imam made
inflammatory remarks but didn’t conspire to carry out terrorism. Defense lawyers are seeking to use testimony from Mohammed, who is in a detention facility in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. They would need U.S. District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan’s approval to introduce the information. The defense has suggested Mohammed could help rebut the government’s claim that Abu Ghaith must have known in advance of al-Qaida’s so-called shoe bomb airplane plots, including Richard Reid’s attempt to carry one out in December 2001.
The statement from Mohammed filed Sunday consisted of answers he gave to questions posed by Abu Ghaith’s lawyers. In the statement, Mohammed said he never spoke with Abu Ghaith about the shoe bomb operation and added, “Those tasked with giving statements to the media do not necessarily know all the details of an operation and are sometimes even unaware of the very existence of the operation.” Prosecutors rested their case Friday in the trial of Abu Ghaith. The defense case is due to start Monday.

INDONESIA President ordered deployment of security personnel to tackle haze

PEKANBARU - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has ordered the deployment of military and police personnel grouped in the haze management task force to all haze-affected areas of Riau province. “I want military and police personnel, both from central and regional units, to be deployed in all affected areas. Don’t let a single affected area be untouched,” the President stated, while leading a roll call of the disaster management task force at the Roesmin Nurjadin air base on Monday morning. By deploying security personnel in all the affected areas, the President hoped that all local residents who are suffering from haze, which has shrouded Riau in the past 22 days, could be handled effectively. During a meeting with representatives of the residents of Siak district on Sunday, the President expressed disappointment at the failure to tackle land fires in a village, which is located only 20 kilometers from the Riau provincial capital city of Pekanbaru. In his directives to 1,263 personnel of the haze management task force, the President emphasized that the handling of land fires in Riau is divided into two stages; first, fighting fires to get rid of haze in three weeks’ time; and second, putting land in order until September 2014. The first phase of the fire handling effort, which started on March 14 focuses on three pillars; fighting fires and getting rid of haze; providing health care to affected residents; and upholding the law. The law must be upheld strongly, quickly and sternly to give deterrent effects, he explained. The second phase of the fire handling effort will last until September, as the term of the current cabinet will end on October 20. The second phase covers controlling illegal plantations, putting an end to illegal logging and making a system to take preemptive steps in case of fires. Dropped water

Hundreds of hot spots and forest fires were reported in Riau province during the past month. The condition led to thick haze that cover most of Riau province area and caused respiratory infection among at least 55 thousand local people. The haze also reduced visibility and disturbed the air transportation there. According to police investigations, the forest fires in Riau province were due to deliberate action by people who want to set up new plantations. The Riau Haze Emergency Task Force has deployed 558 personnel to hunt down forest encroachers and arsonists that caused forest, plantation and peat-soil fires in Riau. “The deployment of hundreds of personnel is mainly to strengthen legal enforcement,” Chief of the Riau Police Brigadier General Condro Kirono, in his capacity as the commander of the task force’s legal enforcement unit, stated. The personnel include police officers, military officers, forest rangers and members of the intelligent agency, he pointed out. The Riau police have detained 36 people who allegedly set fires illegally to clear land for farming and plantation. Of the 36 detainees, 16 were encroachers of the Giam Siak KecilBukit Batu biosphere reserve. The Riau military office has also detained a military officer identified by as Chief Sergeant Sudigdo alias Digdo, who was suspected of having financed the encroachment.

MELBOURNE, Australia — Elation turned to desolation for Daniel Ricciardo at the Australian Grand Prix on Sunday after the Red Bull driver was stripped of his first podium finish due to a technical breach at Formula One’s season opener. Ricciardo initially finished second to Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg to become the first homegrown driver to take to the podium in the 29-year history of the Australian GP. The celebrations did not last long as F1 stewards said his car breached fuel-flow rules introduced this year which limit cars to 100 kilograms of fuel during the race. World motorsport governing body FIA subsequently disqualified Ricciardo , elevating McLaren drivers Kevin Magnussen and Jenson Button to second and third. Red Bull immediately announced
it will appeal. Shortly after the end of the race, FIA Formula One technical delegate Jo Bauer said Ricciardo’s car had “exceeded consistently the maximum allowed fuel flow” and referred the matter to stewards. More than three and a half hours later, after Ricciardo had left the track, the stewards disqualified the Australian saying Red Bull had not only breached technical regulations by exceeding the allowed fuel flow, but also had disregarded instructions before the race to change the fuel flow sensor and during the race to reduce the flow. The operation of the fuel-flow sensors had been a source of dispute between the teams and the FIA coming into the first race. After the findings, Red Bull said “Inconsistencies with the FIA fuel flow meter have been prevalent all weekend up and down the pit lane. The team and (engine-maker) Re-
nault are confident the fuel supplied to the engine is in full compliance with the regulations.” Horner further proclaimed the team’s innocence to reporters saying; “It is no fault of Daniel. SAO PAULO — Goalkeeper Julio Cesar — the wrong side of 30 and past his prime — is the weakest link in the team which all of Brazil expects to win the World Cup this July. And that is no accident: The nation of Pele has long paid far more attention to players who score and make goals than to those who save them. The country’s bestknown goalkeeper was probably Barbosa, and he became famous not for a great save but for the national agony he caused by letting in Uruguay’s two goals against Brazil that won the World Cup in 1950. The first thing Brazilian kids often do before pickup games is play “rock, scissors, paper” to decide who gets stuck in goal. With so many outstanding strikers and
midfielders in Brazilian history, few chose keepers as their childhood idols. “If the kid is good enough with the ball, probably he will not want to play in goal,” Zetti, a reserve goalkeeper in Brazil’s 1994 World Cup-winning squad, said in a phone interview. “Kids are usually scared of playing in goal, and most of the time parents are always trying to convince them to play in a different position.” Zetti opened Brazil’s first academy exclusively for
goalkeepers six years ago. Brazil long neglected to take goalkeeping seriously, he explained. Teams didn’t hire trainers for that position, so goalkeepers couldn’t match strikers and midfielders for quality. But Zetti said things have changed in recent decades. SAO PAULO — Goalkeeper Julio Cesar — the wrong side of 30 and past his prime — is the weakest link in the team which all of Brazil expects to win the World Cup this July. And that is no accident: The nation of Pele has long paid far more attention to players who score and make goals than to those who save them. The country’s bestknown goalkeeper was probably Barbosa, and he became famous not for a great save but for the national agony he caused by letting in Uruguay’s two goals against Brazil that won the World Cup in 1950. The first thing Brazilian kids often do before pickup games is play “rock, scissors, paper” to decide who gets stuck in goal. With so many outstanding strikers and
midfielders in Brazilian history, few chose keepers as their childhood idols. “If the kid is good enough with the ball, probably he will not want to play in goal,” Zetti, a reserve goalkeeper in Brazil’s 1994 World Cup-winning squad, said in a phone interview. “Kids are usually scared of playing in goal, and most of the time parents are always trying to convince them to play in a different position.” Zetti opened Brazil’s first academy exclusively for

MELBOURNE, Australia — Elation turned to desolation for Daniel Ricciardo at the Australian Grand Prix on Sunday after the Red Bull driver was stripped of his first podium finish due to a technical breach at Formula One’s season opener. Ricciardo initially finished second to Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg to become the first homegrown driver to take to the podium in the 29-year history of the Australian GP. The celebrations did not last long as F1 stewards said his car breached fuel-flow rules introduced this year which limit cars to 100 kilograms of fuel during the race. World motorsport governing body FIA subsequently disqualified Ricciardo , elevating McLaren drivers Kevin Magnussen and Jenson Button to second and third. Red Bull immediately announced
it will appeal. Shortly after the end of the race, FIA Formula One technical delegate Jo Bauer said Ricciardo’s car had “exceeded consistently the maximum allowed fuel flow” and referred the matter to stewards. More than three and a half hours later, after Ricciardo had left the track, the stewards disqualified the Australian saying Red Bull had not only breached technical regulations by exceeding the allowed fuel flow, but also had disregarded instructions before the race to change the fuel flow sensor and during the race to reduce the flow. The operation of the fuel-flow sensors had been a source of dispute between the teams and the FIA coming into the first race. After the findings, Red Bull said “Inconsistencies with the FIA fuel flow meter have been prevalent all weekend up and down the pit lane. The team and (engine-maker) Re-
nault are confident the fuel supplied to the engine is in full compliance with the regulations.” Horner further proclaimed the team’s innocence to reporters saying; “It is no fault of Daniel. I don’t believe it is the fault of the team.” “I am extremely disappointed, quite surprised ... hopefully through the appeal process it will be quite clear that the car has conformed at all times to the regulations,” he added. “We would not be appealing unless we were extremely confident that we have a defendable case.”

VATICAN CITY — Christians and Muslims have joined to try to help free millions of men, women and children held in modern-day slavery, forced to work as maids, prostitutes, child soldiers and manual laborers. The Global Freedom Network launched Monday at the Vatican aims to eradicate slavery by encouraging governments, businesses, educational and faith institutions to rid their supply chains of slave labor. The initiative is the brainchild of billionaire Australian mining magnate Andrew Forrest, who founded the Walk Free Foundation in 2012 to mobilize a grass-roots movement to end slavery. Forrest, ranked 270th on Forbes’ list of the world’s richest people, used personal contacts to bring the 1.2-billion strong Catholic Church, 85-million strong Anglican Communion and al-Azhar university in Cairo, the world’s foremost seat of Sunni learning, on board with the initiative. Representatives from all three gathered Monday at the Vatican to sign an agreement to launch the project, which will be based at the Vatican and have a chief executive responsible for implementing a five-year business plan. Objectives include getting the G20 to condemn modern-day slavery, persuading 50 major corporations to commit to slavery-proofing their supply chains and convincing 160 governments to endorse a seven-year, $100 million fundraising effort to implement anti-slavery programs globally. In an interview, Forrest said it makes financial sense for countries to rid themselves of slave labor. “We have absolute economic proof that once you take slavery out of a community, that community grows and grows and grows,” he said. The Walk Free Foundation in 2013 published the “Global Slavery Index,” a country-by-country breakdown which found that some 29.8 million people were currently enslaved around the globe: child laborers harvesting cocoa in Ivory Coast, women sold for sex in Moldova, and Haitian children trafficked and forced into begging. Everyday items used in the developed world — soccer balls, bricks, diamonds and flowers — are often produced or extracted using slave labor, the report said.

NEW YORK — The self-described mastermind of the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks in the U.S. says the onetime Osama bin Laden spokesman who is on trial in New York had no role in planning military operations for al-Qaida. Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, said in a statement filed in Manhattan federal court late Sunday that Sulaiman Abu Ghaith served as an al-Qaida spokesman because he was “an eloquent, spellbinding speaker.” But Mohammed says Abu Ghaith “had nothing to do with military operations.” Abu Ghaith, who is a son-in-law of bin Laden, is charged with conspiring to kill Americans. He is the highestlevel al-Qaida figure to be tried in the U.S. since the Sept. 11 attacks. Prosecutors say he was part of al-Qaida’s deadly plot in his role as spokesman in fiery videos and as a motivational speaker at the group’s training camps in Afghanistan. Abu Ghaith’s lawyers have said the Kuwait-born imam made
inflammatory remarks but didn’t conspire to carry out terrorism. Defense lawyers are seeking to use testimony from Mohammed, who is in a detention facility in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. PEKANBARU - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has ordered the deployment of military and police personnel grouped in the haze management task force to all haze-affected areas of Riau province. “I want military and police personnel, both from central and regional units, to be deployed in all affected areas. Don’t let a single affected area be untouched,” the President stated, while leading a roll call of the disaster management task force at the Roesmin Nurjadin air base on Monday morning. By deploying security personnel in all the affected areas, the President hoped that all local residents who are suffering from haze, which has shrouded Riau in the past 22 days, could be handled effectively. During a meeting with representatives of the residents of Siak district on Sunday, the President expressed disappointment at the failure to tackle land fires in a village, which is located only 20 kilometers from the Riau provincial capital city of Pekanbaru. In his directives to 1,263 personnel of the haze management task force, the President emphasized that the handling of land fires in Riau is divided into two stages; first, fighting fires to get rid of haze in three weeks’ time; and second, putting land in order until September 2014. The first phase of the fire handling effort, which started on March 14 focuses on three pillars; fighting fires and getting rid of haze; providing health care to affected residents; and upholding the law. The law must be upheld strongly, quickly and sternly to give deterrent effects, he explained. The second phase of the fire handling effort will last until September, as the term of the current cabinet will end on October 20. Hundreds of hot spots and forest fires were reported in Riau province during the past month. The condition led to thick haze that cover most of Riau province area and caused respiratory infection among at least 55 thousand local people. The haze also reduced visibility and disturbed the air transportation there. According to police investigations, the forest fires in Riau province were due to deliberate action by people who want to set up new plantations. The Riau Haze Emergency Task Force has deployed 558 personnel to hunt down forest encroachers and arsonists that caused forest, plantation and peat-soil fires in Riau. “The deployment of hundreds of personnel is mainly to strengthen legal enforcement,” Chief of the Riau Police Brigadier General Condro Kirono, in his capacity as the commander of the task force’s legal enforcement unit, stated. The personnel include police officers, military officers, forest rangers and members of the intelligent agency, he pointed out. The Riau police have detained 36 people who allegedly set fires illegally to clear land for farming and plantation. Of the 36 detainees, 16 were encroachers of the Giam Siak KecilBukit Batu biosphere reserve. China’s new leaders under President Xi Jinping who took office a year ago have touted “people-centred urbanisation” to raise the quality of life as well as just growth rates. The “national plan for a new model of urbanisation” unveiled Sunday calls for measurable improvements such as extended social benefits, improved air quality -- an issue that causes widespread public anger -- and expanded public transport. It aims for 60 percent of China’s 1.36 billion people to live in cities by 2020 and for 45 percent to have the vital urban residency registration, or “hukou”, that gives them equal access to social benefits such as education and health care. This would compare with 52.6 percent and 35.3 percent as of 2012. The stated goals include “work hard to achieve 100 million rural workers and other permanent residents obtaining urban hukou”. The change would narrow the proportion of urban residents who lack urban hukous -- a move which analysts say is crucial in improving living standards for migrants from the countryside, hundreds of millions of whom have moved to the cities in recent decades. “Urbanisation is a powerful engine for maintaining the sustainable healthy development of the economy,” the plan said. Rural Chinese, “by becoming urban residents will enjoy better public services, causing the urban consumer pool to continue to expand”, it said, calling domestic demand “a fundamental driver of China’s economic development”. China’s leaders have repeatedly pledged to retool the country’s growth model to one driven by consumer demand rather than investment. But the plan also said urbanisation will “bring huge investment demand for city infrastructure, facilities for public services and housing construction, which will provide continuing power for economic development”. Among many goals, the plan called for 99 percent of migrant children to receive nine years’ education, and 95 percent of rural labourers and others struggling to find work to receive free basic job training. It said 60 percent of cities should meet national air quality standards, up from 40.9 percent in 2010. The official news agency Xinhua stressed authorities’ commitment, saying the plan “will provide strategic and fundamental guidance for the healthy development of urbanisation across the country”.

The number of visitors to this tourist area is indeed beginning to rise, but still constrained by tourist facilities that have not been available. Besides, many things remain to be addressed, including the culinary stalls. Over the past year, from five stalls provided, only four units have been used. Additionally, some stalls are also frequently closed.
As seen on Sunday morning (Mar 16), no culinary stalls had been opened yet. At that time, visitors had actually crowded the beach, especially in the buffalo race circuit located not far from the beach. Even, it had been graced with many activities. However, the beach seemed even to be dominated by street vendors who sold around the beach. Kadek Merta, one of the visitors, said the newly established culinary stalls were rarely seen to open. Until Sunday afternoon, police and residents still helped clean up the tree branches hampering the road access. Supriyadi, 56, a stall owner at roadside on Jalan Udayana said that strong winds coincided with rain around 3:30 p.m. When the incident occurred, he was in the stall and could hear the roars from the West. “It happened very quickly and as if there were fogs, I saw the wind spinning,” said the meatball trader. Meanwhile, Mrs. Lia, a (steamed) chicken betutu trader also saw a tornado around the site with mists crashing into the east. At the time, she was in the gazebo of parking lot in her Betutu Chicken Stall. She also watched the roof of the shoe kiosk owned by Sunar flew and was swept
away by the wind. She was worried if the wind would be crashing down her gazebo. NEW YORK — Shaped like a lopsided headband, Google Glass is an unassuming piece of technology when you’re holding it in your hands. You feel as if you can almost break it, testing its flexibility. Putting it on, though, is another story. Once you do, this Internet-connected eyewear takes on a life of its own. You become “The Person Wearing Google Glass” and all the assumptions that brings with it —about your wealth, boorishness or curiosity. Such is the fate of early adopters of new technologies, whether it’s the Sony Walkman, the first iPod with its conspicuous white earbuds, or the Segway scooter. Google calls the people who wear Glass “explorers,” because the device is not yet available to the general public. With its $1,500 price tag, the device is far from having mass appeal. At the South By Southwest Interactive tech jamboree in Austin this week, I counted fewer than a dozen people wearing it, including technology blogger Robert Scoble, who isn’t shy about posting pictures of himself in the shower, red-faced, water running, wearing the device. Google, like most successful technology companies, dreamers and inventors, likes to take a long view on things. It calls some of its most outlandish projects “moonshots.”
Besides Glass, these include its driverless car, balloons that deliver Internet service to remote parts of the world and contact lenses that monitor glucose levels in diabetics. There’s an inherent risk in moonshots, however: What if you never reach the moon? Ten years from now, we may look back at Google Glass as one of those short-lived bridges that takes us from one technological breakthrough to the next, just as pagers, MP3 players and personal digital assistants paved the way for the era of the smartphone. Fitness bands, too, may fit into this category. In its current, early version, Google Glass feels bulky on my face and when I look in the mirror I see a futuristic telemarketer looking back at me. Wearing it on the subway while a homeless man shuffled through the car begging for change made me feel as if I was sporting a diamond tiara. I sank lower in my seat as he passed. If Google is aiming for mass appeal, the next versions of Glass have to be much smaller and less

Scientists have crowdsourced a network of volunteers taking water samples at beaches along the U.S. West Coast in hopes of capturing a detailed look at low levels of radiation drifting across the ocean since the 2011 tsunami that devastated a nuclear power plant in Japan. With the risk to public health extremely low, the effort is more about perfecting computer models that will better predict chemical and radiation spills in the future than bracing for a threat, researchers say. Federal agencies are not sampling at the beach. The state of Oregon is sampling, but looking for higher radiation levels closer to federal health standards, said state health physicist Daryl Leon. Washington stopped looking after early testing turned up nothing, said Washington Department of Health spokesman Donn Moyer. The March 2011 tsunami off Japan flooded the Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear plant, causing radiationcontaminated water to spill into the Pacific. Airborne radiation was detected in milk and rainwater in the U.S. soon afterward. But things move much more slowly in the ocean. “We know there’s contami-
nated water coming out of there, even today,” Ken Buesseler, a senior scientist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts, said in a video appealing for volunteers and contributions. In fact, it is the biggest pulse of radioactive liquid dropped in the ocean ever, he said. “What we don’t really know is how fast and how much is being transported across the Pacific,” he added. “Yes, the models tell us it will be safe. Yes, the levels we expect off the coast of the U.S. and Canada are expected to be low. But we need measurements, especially now as the plume begins to arrive along the West Coast.” In an email from Japan, Buesseler said he hopes the sampling will go on every two or three months for the next two to three years. Two different models have been published in peer-reviewed scientific journals predicting the spread of radioactive isotopes of cesium and iodine from Fukushima. One, known as Rossi et al, shows the leading edge of the plume hitting the West Coast from southeast Alaska to Southern California by April. The other, known as Behrens et all, shows the plume hitting Southeast Alaska, British Columbia and Washington by March 2016.

The ever-rising tax has incriminated farmers,” said the lecturer of the Faculty of Agriculture, Udayana University, Dr. Gusti Alit Susanta Wirya, accompanied by I Putu Sudiarta, Ph.D. In addition, the government was expected to arrange and maintain the spatial order of the rice field so as not to be targeted by developers. “In essence, farmers must be protected and made prosperous. When it has been done, there is small possibility for farmers to sell their farmland,” added Sudiarta. Sudiarta confirmed the price of agricultural products in Bali should be high. He said that so far the public often protested because the price was expensive. Therefore, the government should have the courage to provide subsidies. “For example, the grain must be purchased at expensive price by the government, and then sold again at a lower price
because it has been subsidized. It is the subsidy. In Indonesia, the government should be able to make farmers prosperous,” he said. Meanwhile, the Secretary of the Indonesian Farmers Union (HKTI) of Badung Chapter, I Ketut Sugiana, said that rice field was a part of farming system in Bali and had economic, sociological and ecological function. In addition, the farming system in Bali denoted a civilization of Balinese people having become a specific culture. “Organization of the agriculture in Bali through subak system has been recognized to have its own characteristics. Such characteristics eventually become the alluring magnet of Bali. Thus, there is no reason for not preserving the rice fields and farming system in Bali,” he said. Meanwhile, for the preservation strategy, said Sugiana, the government should consistently apply the provisions of the law on the preservation of sustainable cropland. Additionally, it should be combined with the customary bylaw in the subak organization. The policies of regulation in the area of land were also important to be refined because land conversion commenced from the transfer of land rights. “It is time for all of us to care about the agriculture in Bali in order to avoid more severe damage. Similarly, the government should also seriously protect farmers with various pro-farmer policies,” said Sugiana. (rah)

Based on a report from Gerindra, Prabowo will again act as the party’s national campaigner on March 29, in Yogyakarta, and then on April 5 in East Java. But the grand campaign of Gerindra will be staged at Bung Karno sport stadium in Jakarta on March 23.
On the first day of campaign, Prabowo, the presidential candidate from Gerindra, conducted the campaign in Sragen, Central Java. DENPASAR - A villa located on Jalan Kunti I Gang Mangga, Seminyak Kuta, was raided by the officers of the Denpasar Police Narcotics Investigation Unit, Tuesday night (Mar 11). In the villa, one of the occupants was alleged to hold a drug party. It was true that Mohammad Syaiful Ali bin Shafarudin, 28, a citizen of Singapore was known to be in the fly condition in the villa room. He was then taken to the Denpasar Police to undergo further examination. Other than the suspect, police also seized drug evidence in the form of dried marijuana leaves and two ecstasy pills. “The suspect has been arrested in the Denpasar Police and the case is being developed,” said the source at police station, Sunday (Mar 16). The source explained that the raid was carried out based on the complaints from the public where in the villa was told there was an occupant making a drug party. Having been followed up, in fact, the information was correct and the suspect was caught taking drugs. “When arrested, the suspect was in fly condition,” he said. Further, the source who declined to give his name said that from the results of the search in the villa room, the officers found the leaves, seeds and stems amounting to 17.52 grams of marijuana (in package) and two pieces of ecstasy. “Indeed, the suspect stayed with her girlfriend. However, his girlfriend was not proved to taking drugs,” he explained. Meanwhile, on the same day, the officers led by Unit Chief of the Denpasar Police Narcotics Investigator, Agus Tri Waluyo, also arrested another drug abuser. The suspect was Nyoman Gede Susila, 34, a resident of Grombong hamlet, Sulang village, Dawan, Klungkung. The suspect was arrested at a house located at Jalan WR Supratman 231 Kesiman, Pentilan, East Denpasar. From the suspect, police could seize the evidence in the form of crystal meth weighing 0.21 gram. The illicit goods were wrapped in plastic clip. Aside from crystal meth, police also seized a black trousers and a roll. On the next day, the officers arrested the suspect Bambang Solekan, 31. The suspect was arrested in his boarding house on Jalan Danau Tempe Gang Asri, Sanur, Wednesday (Mar 12) around three o’clock in the afternoon. The evidence seized from the suspect included crystal meth weighing 0.16 gram wrapped in a cigarette. He was taken into detainee cell while awaiting further legal proceedings. Meanwhile, the Chief of Denpasar Police, Djoko Hariutomo, accompanied by Agus Tri Waluyo justified the arrest of the drug suspects, including the citizen of Singapore. (kmb21)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Chris Brown returns to court after rehab dismissal Associated Press Writer
LOS ANGELES — Chris Brown is facing a court hearing over his dismissal from rehab and whether he should be given additional penalties, which could include more time behind bars. The Grammy-winning R&B singer spent the weekend in a Los Angeles jail after a judge ordered him to be arrested for violating the rules and regulations of his treatment. Court records did not elaborate on the reason for Brown’s dismissal from the facility that was treating him for anger management, substance abuse and issues related to bipolar disorder. Brown, 24, had been under court orders to remain in treatment since November, one month after he was arrested in Washington, D.C., after a man accused him of punching him in a confrontation
outside a hotel. That case is pending, and Superior Court Judge James R. Brandlin has not yet scheduled a probation violation hearing to address whether he would penalize the singer for the arrest. His attorney, Mark Geragos, did not return an email message seeking comment on the singer’s arrest. Prosecutors have not said what action they plan to take at Monday’s hearing. The judge revoked Brown’s probation in December, but refused a prosecutor’s request in February to send the singer to jail because of the Washington misdemeanor assault case. The judge has said Brown appeared to be making good progress in rehab and a probation officer gave him a favorable report at his last court hearing on Feb. 28. The singer’s arrest last week represents another stumble in his efforts to put his

DENPASAR - The land around the sacred zone needs special attention, primarily the land located around the kahyangan jagat or universal temple becoming the main tourist attraction. It is based on consideration that the lands are mostly privately owned, so there is possibility to be contracted or even sold to investors. This was conveyed by a tourism practitioner from the Udayana University, I Putu Anom, in Denpasar. “Sacred zone, especially the area around the kahyangan jagat temple doubling as tourist attraction really needs to be secured and preserved because most lands around the area are private property that are most likely to be sold or transferred or leased to capital owners for the development of tourism facilities or used as a souvenir stall, restaurants, etc.,” he explained. Anom reasoned that construc-
tion of tourism facilities could reduce the temple sanctity as it happened to Besakih Temple. According to him, the land areas above the Penataran Agung to Gelap Temple were owned by local residents. This former Dean of the Faculty of Tourism, Udayana University worried that investors could target for the lands anytime. “We cannot just blame the local community as the land owner
in the sacred zone. But, we need to find a solution for the problem. One of the ways is needed the role of the Hindu Dharma Council of Indonesia (PHDI) and Customary Village General Assembly (MUDP) with coordination to the supporting devotees of the temple commonly posing the local communities around the temple,” he said. government, county and municipal government as the extension of central government and private companies could also invite the Hindus to make a charity action. The charity, said Anom, could be used to purchase land around the sacred zone so as not to become the property of investor. “The Hindus either of civil servants or private sector employees must be invited to resolve the problem by sincere charity on the basis of sacred mind through deduction of salary approximately IDR 10,000 per month. It must be collected by the PHDI so the funds could be used to purchase lands in the sacred zone that finally can become the temple property and be
preserved,” he explained. Anom added the funds collected could also be used to help the implementation of religious ceremonies, higher priests or pinandita, training tuition of the priest prospective and oblation makers as well as the funds for the Hindu foundation in relation to human resource development in the face of global competition, scholarships for underprivileged students of Hinduism, including the Hindus entrepreneurship development. “Most importantly, these funds should be managed in a professional, honest, transparent and accountable manner so that it can be accounted for,” he concluded.
