‘Lego Movie’ blocks ‘RoboCop,’ ‘About Last Night’ Associated Press Writer

LOS ANGELES — “The Lego Movie” built a huge lead on top of the weekend’s new releases at the box office. In its second outing, the Warner Bros. animated film featuring the voices of Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks and Will Arnett earned $48.8 million to take first place, according to studio estimates Sunday. That brings the film based on the toy brick-building franchise’s domestic box office total to $129.1 million, cementing it was one of the biggest blockbusters of the year. “It’s crossing over to all audiences,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for box-office tracker Rentrak. “It’s not just a kids’ movie. There’s something for boys, girls and adults, as well. The likeability is astronomical. That acrossthe-board appeal is giving ‘The Lego Movie’ unstoppable momentum, even in a weekend loaded with new competitors.” “The Lego Movie” earned an additional $27.7 million from 42 international territories, including the United

Kingdom, Holland, Sweden and Norway. The worldwide total box office for “Lego Movie” now stands at $180.3 million. Sony’s romantic comedy “About Last Night” starring Kevin Hart and Michael Ealy came in second place with $27 million. The strong showing further demonstrated Hart’s clout as a box-office draw. The actor-comedian’s other film, the buddy-cop comedy “Ride Along” with Ice Cube, nabbed $8.8 million in its fifth weekend to take the sixth spot at the box office.

LONDON — The force of “Gravity” was strong at the British Academy Film Awards on Sunday — but it was unflinching drama “12 Years a Slave” that took the top prize. Steve McQueen’s visceral, violent story of a free black man kidnapped into servitude in the 19th-century U.S. South was named best picture. Its star, Chiwetel Ejiofor, took the male acting trophy. Ejiofor thanked McQueen, a visual artist who turned to filmmaking with “Hunger” and “Shame,” for bringing the story to the screen. Holding the trophy, the British actor told McQueen: “This is yours. I’m going to keep it — that’s the kind of guy I am — but it’s yours.” McQueen reminded the ceremony’s black-tie audience that, in some parts of the world, slavery is not a thing of the past. “There are 21 million people in slavery as we sit here,” he said. “I just hope 150 years from now our ambivalence will not allow another filmmaker to make this film.” The prizes, coming two weeks before Hollywood’s Academy Awards, are watched as an indicator of likely Oscars success. It was a good night for lost-in-space thriller “Gravity,” which won six prizes, including best director for Alfonso Cuaron. The 3-D special effects extravaganza also took the awards for sound, music, cinematography and visual effects. And despite its mixed parentage — made in Britain by a Mexican director and starring American actors —it was named best British film. Cuaron paid tribute to star Sandra Bullock, who is alone onscreen for much of the film. “Without her performance, everything would have been nonsense,” he said.

Japan divers found alive after days missing

DENPASAR - Five Japanese divers have now been found alive off the Indonesian resort island of Bali more three days after going missing, a disaster agency official said Monday. Rudi Tjandi, from the Bali disaster agency, said officials found the divers holding on to a coral reef off Nusa Penida island, southeast of Bali. They were among seven Japanese divers, all women, who went missing Friday. Rescue efforts were hampered by poor weather Monday, with a helicopter only able to join the search in the afternoon after being grounded by heavy rain and strong winds in the morning. But around 3:30 pm (0730 GMT) four of the women were found alive in waters some 300 metres (1,000 feet) off the coast of Nusa Penida, an island just southeast of Bali, said local police chief Nyoman Suarsika. “They are now being res-

cued and taken to Sanur,” he added, referring to a beach area of southern Bali popular with tourists. He did not have news of the three women still missing, and could not immediately say exactly where the other four were rescued or give their names. Distraught relatives of the divers have been arriving in Bali, with a distressed husband of one of them spotted on Sanur beach. “I’m praying for her safety,” the mother of missing instructor Shoko Takahashi told reporters in Japan on Sunday before leaving for Bali, according to the Yomiuri Shim-

bun daily. “She is an active person with a dependable personality. She never does foolhardy things.” Takahashi and her husband had set up the operator known as Yellow Scuba that took the divers out on the trip, Japanese consular official Kenichi Takeyama confirmed. He said two members of her family had joined a small briefing on the search at the consulate in Bali. “The family members are understandably very concerned and they want to know all the details -- what the conditions were like, what the current and temperature was like,” Takeyama said.

Takeyama said Yellow Scuba had provided boats and staff for the search. The women were experienced scuba divers who had logged more than 50 dives each. The dive boat’s skipper said he was following the divers for some 20 minutes before a sudden downpour made the water cloudy, according to Japan’s Asahi Shimbun newspaper. He moved his 10-metre-long boat to a point some hundreds of metres away where the divers were expected to resurface at an agreed time, the report said. When they failed to resurface, the skipper said he searched for them for an hour before reporting the incident. But Bali

To assist rescue officials, Chapman on Sunday conducted a dive to simulate the group’s, saying the current was “quite gentle” but became much rougher when he surfaced. Hamzar said the divers left from Blue Point on Nusa Lembongan, an area recommended only for experienced divers because of its strong currents, which often strike suddenly. Japan’s Kyodo news agency said the missing women were named by police and rescue authorities as: Ritsuko Miyata, 59, Emi Yamamoto, 33, Nahomi Tomita, 28, Aya Morizono, 27, Atsumi Yoshinobe, 29, Shoko Takahashi, 29, and Saori Furukawa, 27. SINGARAJA - After the flash floods hitting the Kaja Kauh hamlet, Sudaji village, Sawan subdistrict, so far 3 families remain to take refuge under the emergency tent. It happened because they were unable to repair their destroyed homes as crushed by flash floods. Results of the field observation on Sunday (Feb 16) indicated the flood some time ago brought in natural boulders, so they were very difficult to move without the help of heavy equipment. Nearly 25 residents of Kaja Kauh hamlet, Sudaji village, lived under tent with improvised living condition. They were still unable to repair the damaged home after being hit by flood disaster. One of the flood victims, Gede Suwindrawan, 24, a native resident to Sudaji said the incident on Thursday (Feb 23) around 5 o’clock in the afternoon was started by torrential rains and resulted in flood from Sudaji Hill. The flood was very large and carried boulders to the house of the three families. “After the flood, the government provided the assistance in the form of rice, noodles, money and building materials. We got 8 sacks of cement and 8 pieces of zinc roof. We consider the assistance inadequate to build our house totally washed away by flash floods. The losses caused by the disaster reached IDR 150 million more,” he said. Another family member, Ni Made Kardi, 43, said that at that time she was about to feed her swine, but such intention was cancelled

due to feeling uneasy and flood came. Around 5 o’clock in the afternoon, she did not know if the flood would occur. If she did, she could surely save her valuables. She and her family just made a new shrine costing hundreds of millions of rupiahs. As hit by the flash flood, everything was destroyed. “Many boulders and giant trees were suddenly washed away from the Sudaji Hill. Indeed, the government has lent a hand, but I regret very much because the only one home we have has been shattered by floods. Hopefully, there will be a help to fix my home and this condition can be back to normal so we can live and work properly,” he said. Meanwhile, Wayan Meles, 80, described that he was very concerned to see such horrific condition after the flood. He still remembered if the flood incident bringing materials and trees ferociously destroyed the road infrastructure and the homes of residents. The government planned to fix, but so far there had been no action. “There is no indication if

the government will restore our village to the condition as ever before. It has been promised to be delivered heavy equipment to move the natural boulders, but we do not know when it happens considering some of our residents have taken refuge for nearly a month,” he explained. His party hoped the economic condition of the residents could recover when the infrastructure had been improved properly. “We expect the condition at the village can go back to normal after the road is repaired. The road at Sudaji village has become one of the people’s economic resources for the access to the town,” he hoped. The Head of the BNPB Buleleng Putu Dana justified there were 3 families in refugee camp. They still could not go home due to being unable to repair their home. “Three families remain to stay in the tent as temporary shelter at Kaja Kauh hamlet. Meanwhile, the refugees from Galungan hamlet have returned homes,” he said. (dgk)

AMLAPURA - As toppled over by a fallen coconut tree, a building of the SDN 1 Pesedahan elementary school, Manggis, Karangasem, was damaged, Saturday afternoon (Feb 15). No injuries were reported in the incident, but the archives and equipment stored inside the building were damaged. It was announced by the Principal of the SDN 1 Pasedahan, Wayan Wardana and local headman Nyoman Wage, Sunday (Feb 16) in Manggis. The damage to the archives and school furniture occurred because the hood of school building toppled over was right above the principal room and teacher work space. Wardana said the damage to the archives such as the administrative records of the school operating assistance (BOS) occurred because they were torn or wet as splashed by the water of broken coconut and dumped by tile fragments. He said that residents near the school were shocked to hear the booming sound of the fallen tree. Not long after the incident, it was then checked and known if the rear hood of the local building or two rooms were destroyed as toppled over by the fallen coconut tree behind the school. Fortunately, the school had been deserted and no class was held in the afternoon, so there were no casualties. The 20-meter high coconut tree uprooted because its roots had risen above the ground and then was hit by high winds. Wardana hoped the Karangasem County through the Education Agency to immediately assist the rehabilitation of the school building established in1938. It was intended to avoid further damage to school furniture considering it was in rainy season. Wage said that as soon as the elementary school building was known to have been destroyed as toppled over by fallen coconut tree, he was immediately contacted the Karangasem Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD). The team led by the Head of BPBD Karangasem Nyoman Sutirtayasa came down to location. Police authority and PLN were also contacted to secure the power lines. At that time till evening, they did mutual assistance to cut down the coconut tree and dropped it off. Wage added the mutual assistance was resumed on Sunday by involving the school committee and local village apparatus. Meanwhile, the fragments of roof tiles were also cleaned up. (013)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

CHEBOYGAN, Michigan — From the bridge of the Coast Guard cutter Mackinaw, northern Lake Huron looks like a vast, snow-covered field dotted with ice slabs as big as boulders — a battleground for the icebreaker’s 58-member crew during one of the roughest winters in memory. It’s been so bitterly cold for so long in the Upper Midwest that the Great Lakes are almost completely covered with ice. The last time they came this close was in 1994, when 94 percent of the lakes’ surface was frozen. As of Friday, ice cover extended across 88 percent, according to the U.S. government’s Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory in Ann Arbor. Sections of the lakes, which hold nearly one-fifth of the freshwater on the world’s surface, harden almost every winter. That freezing keeps the Coast Guard’s fleet of nine icebreakers busy clearing paths for vessels hauling essential cargo such as heating oil, salt and coal. But over the past four decades, the average ice cover has receded 70 percent, scientists say, probably in part because of climate change. Still, as this season shows, shortterm weather patterns can trump multiyear trends. Winter arrived early and with a vengeance and refuses to loosen its grip. “That arctic vortex came down, and the ice just kept going,” said George Leshkevich, a physical scientist with the federal lab. The deep freeze is more than a novelty. By limiting evaporation, it may help replenish lake water levels — a process that began last year after a record-breaking slump dating to the late 1990s. Also getting relief are cities along the lakes that have been pummeled with lake-effect snow, which happens when cold air masses suck up

moisture from open waters and dump it over land. Buffalo, New York, got nearly 43 inches (109 centimeters) of snow in January, but this month just 13 inches (33 centimeters) have fallen, a decline resulting largely from the freeze-over of Lake Erie even though Lake Ontario has remained largely open, said forecaster Jon Hitchcock of the National Weather Service. Heavy ice can also protect fish eggs from predators, and it has delighted photographers, ice anglers and daredevil snowmobilers. At Apostle Islands National Lakeshore in Wisconsin, the rock-solid cover has allowed around 35,000 visitors to trudge miles (kilometers) over Lake Superior to explore caves featuring dazzling ice formations. It’s the first time in five years the lake surface has been firm enough to allow passage. With no letup in the cold, the ice hasn’t experienced the usual thawand-freeze cycle, so nature’s artistry is even more delicate and beautiful, with needle-like hoarfrost crystals sprinkled across sheets that dangle from cave ceilings like giant chandeliers. “Seeing them like this is almost a once-in-alifetime experience,” Superintendent Bob Krumenaker said.

CAIRO — The Egyptian minister of antiquities says that a team of German archaeologists has discovered missing pieces belonging to the famed Colossi of Memnon. The statues, dating to roughly 1350 BC, were damaged in an earthquake during the Roman era. The colossi are some of Egypt’s oldest touristic attractions, drawing tourists since ancient times. The twin statues, over 18 meters (60 feet) tall each, are of Pharaoh Amenhotep III, who was worshipped as a deity. The statues are the only remains of a large temple that was built in memorial of the pharaoh. Minister of Antiquities Mohammed Ibrahim says Sunday the team made the discovery in cooperation with archaeologists from Egypt’s Ministry of Antiquities. He said the pieces belong to the belt of one statue, and the base of the other.

The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Sharif C. Sutardjo, said that the tuna industry is currently facing many challenges. The productivity reduction, the size shrinkage, and the difficulty of tracking tuna population on the high seas, to name a few. Therefore, the MMAF bolsters the the sustainable fisheries development to meet those challenges. The sustainable tuna development includes the tuna reproduction, genetic, water temperature and swimming depths as well as the tuna observation from the very first time it’s arrived in the port or on the boat. “The research run by the Tuna Benoa Fishery Research Institute (LP2T) is MMAF’s commitment to maintain the tuna resource sustainability in Indonesia as well as to meet the world’s demand of tuna,” said the Ministry after visiting LP2T in Mertasari, Bali. Sharif stated that in the entire Indonesian Fishery Management Zone, the exploitation status of albacore, yellow fin, bigeye, and blue fin tuna is extremely alarming with the status of fully exploited and even over-exploited, and it’s only the skipjack tuna still being in the moderate status. This negative trend will eventually impact the livelihood of the fishermen and the tuna industry. “The tuna sustainability is not a responsibility of one or two nations, but it’s the entire world having to take part in it. The national tuna management therefore

will always be a concern of the RFMOs (Regional Fisheries Management Bodies) who has mandate to regulate the global tuna management,” Mr. Sutardjo asserted. Sharif continued, to maintain as well as bolster the tuna management globally, the Indonesian Government has become a member of WCPFC (Western and Central pacific Fisheries Commission). By joining the Commission, Indonesian is currently included in three Regional Fishery Management Organizations; Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC), Commission on Conservation of Southern Blue fin Tuna (CCSBT) and Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC). “Indonesia is also subject to the international law in terms of the high seas fishing activity, including the feasibility of the vessels and the conservation and the management compliance,” he re-affirmed. In the meantime, the Head of the R&D of MMAF, Achmad Poernomo, explained that the tuna landings monitoring is conducted over 16 tuna processing companies based in Benoa Port. The monitoring is daily run by the LP2T’s enumerators by collecting the data and information of the haul and the activity aboard. The data and information collected will then be yearly delivered to IOTC and CCSBT. “Having joined

to RFMO, Indonesia thus obtains the tuna fishing quota, the tuna selling access to the international market, especially the state members of any RFMO,” Mr. Poernomo explained. MMAF keeps conducting the observation aboard the tuna longline boats accompanied by the LP2T to collect the data and information related to the haul; the size of the fish, the fishing zone, the temperature and the fishing depths. Referring to the observation hosted by LP2T, the longline boats operating zone encompasses the Java, Bali, and Nusa Tenggara, both inside and outside the Exclusive Economic Zone. “By clinging to this research, it’s expected that the tuna fishermen will take home such a significant amount of haul. They just need to set the fishing depths, and if it’s matching with the temperature and the optimum depths, they’ll figure out the which kind of tuna about to fish out,” he stated. Poernomo added that the MMAF’s R&D is currently running the genetic research of the bigeye tuna. The research shows that the bigeye tuna can be divided into two population groups; the group sourcing from the south Indian Ocean of Java and Nusa Tenggara. The second group coming from the west Indian Ocean of Sumatera. The first group allegedly comes from the Pacific Ocean while the second group is originated from the Indian Ocean.

“According to the gonadal development research, the spawning season of the Indian Ocean’s bigeye tuna allegedly occurs throughout the year,” he explained. The Tuna Benoa Fishery Research Institute (LP2T) is a technical unit under the MMAF’s R&D. The establishment of LP2T was initiated with the tuna research collaboration, particularly on the southern blue fish tuna (Thunnus

maccoyii) research in the Benoa Porta between Australia’s CSIRO and Marine Fishery Research Institute on 1993. The partnership was proceeded on 2002 by establishing the monitoring program through the multilateral partnership project (Australia, Japan and IOTC) in three key tuna landings in Indonesia; the Fishing Port of Samudera Jakarta, National Fishery Port of Cilacap and Benoa Port.

DENPASAR - Mount Kelud eruption in East Java remains affecting domestic flights from Ngurah Rai airport in Denpasar to Adisucipto airport in Yogyakarta, official said. “As of Sunday, only the flights from Denpasar to Yogyakarta are being disturbed,” Ngurah Rai Airport Duty Manager Agus Adi Pratomo said. According to him, flights from Denpasar to Adi Sucipto airport were still halted because volcanic ashes that covered the runway had yet to be cleared. But the Husein Sastranegara airport in Bandung, West Java, which has been closed since Friday because of the eruption were reopened at 9 on Sunday morning. “Husein Sastranegara airport here was reopened at 9 am, but some airline companies with certain destinations will start to operate normally later in the day,” airport management company PT Angkasa Pura-II spokesman Daryatno said in Bandujng on Sunday. He said Lion Air would start its flights from Bandung at 12 noon while Tiger Air Mandala would do the same on Monday. But he pointed out that Bandung-Yogyakarta route has yet to be opened because the runway Adisucipto airport in Yogyakarta was still being covered by volcanic ashes from Mount Kelud eruption. But the tax rise looms as a major threat to Abe’s efforts and has stoked speculation that the Bank of Japan (BoJ) would be forced to expand its already unprecedented monetary easing drive later this year to counter a slowdown. BRUSSELS — Europe’s economy is growing faster, raising hopes for a sustainable recovery, but that may not be enough to bring skyhigh levels of unemployment down anytime soon. The economy of the euro bloc grew 0.3 percent in the OctoberDecember period from the previous quarter, the Eurostat statistics office said Friday. That was slightly more than expected and up from the third quarter’s 0.1 percent. The recovery remains tepid, however, at least by global standards. The eurozone’s annualized rate of

about 1.2 percent is less than half the U.S.’s 3.2 percent rate during the same period. “While still far from dynamic, it is a step back in the right direction,” said analyst Howard Archer of IHS Global Insight. The eurozone is central to the global economy as Europeans are big buyers of goods from the United States and Asia. Uncertainty over the bloc’s future in recent years weighed on growth and corporate earnings around the world. Here’s a look at the eurozone economy’s vital signs: One of the biggest economic problems facing Europe is unem-

ployment, particularly among the young in those countries at the forefront of the region’s debt crisis. The eurozone economy emerged from recession last year as its financial crisis eased, but employers haven’t started hiring much. The unemployment rate has remained around 12 percent since late 2012. As well as creating uncertainty in households and stifling consumer spending, unemployment is a burden to a country’s coffers as the government pays benefits and misses out on tax revenue from payrolls and economic activity. That pain is not shared evenly across the eurozone, however.

While unemployment in Germany is near record lows around 5 percent, it has jumped to massive levels in countries struggling with debt. In Greece, it has reached a staggering 28 percent, and about 25 percent in Spain. The situation among the young is even worse — in Greece, almost 60 percent of those under 25 were out of work. “Even if the fourth quarter’s slightly faster rate of growth is sustained, it will be many years before the record number of eurozone unemployed can be put back to work,” said Bill Adams, an analyst with PNC. The unemployment rate in the

U.S., by comparison, has fallen steadily to a five-year low of 6.6 percent as of January. The good news in Friday’s growth figures is that they show improvements across most economies. Growth was unexpectedly strong in the bloc’s major economies like Germany, France, Italy — which saw its first growth since 2011 — and the Netherlands. But even Spain and Portugal — which needed rescue loans to rescue banks and the government, respectively — are showing signs of life. “The eurozone’s recovery has moved up a gear,” said Chris Williamson, an analyst with Markit.

The damage to road was caused by a number of factors, including the existence of a violation against the tonnage of freight vehicles, weather and the increasing frequency of vehicles. Ngurah Anom Anthara said that so far his party had enhanced the road condition along 157 km by hot mix asphalt, where in 2014 his party would handle hot mix road along approximately 40 km targeting the damaged and heavily damaged roads. “We do not close the eyes. There are always broken road in several places, but the repair program is still running. Even in 2013, we’ve handled 157 km pursuant to the old data,” he said. Kashmor is in Sindh province but adjoins insurgency-hit Baluchistan. One of several ethnic Baluch separatist groups operating in the resource-rich province, the Baluch Republican Army, claimed responsibility. Al-Qaida-linked militants also have a presence there. The group’s spokesman, Sarbaz Baluch, said in a phone call to The Associated Press from an undisclosed location that the attack was a reaction to what he alleged were killings in Baluchistan’s Dera Bugti region by Pakistani paramilitaries. GENEVA — An Ethiopian Airlines co-pilot hijacked a plane bound for Rome on Monday and flew it to Geneva, where he wanted to seek asylum, officials said. The Boeing 767-300 plane with 202 passengers and crew aboard had taken off from the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, and landed in the Swiss city at about 6 a.m. (0500 GMT). Officials said no one on the flight was injured. Geneva airport chief executive Robert Deillon told reporters that the co-pilot, an Ethiopian man born in 1983, took control of the plane when the pilot ventured outside the cockpit. “The pilot went to the toilet and he (the co-pilot) locked himself in the cockpit,” Deillon said. The man “wanted asylum in Switzerland,” he said. “That’s the motivation of the hijacking.” The hijacking began over Italy, Switzerland’s southern neighbor, and two Italian fighter jets were scrambled to accompany the plane, Deillon said. The co-pilot himself alerted authorities to the plane’s hijacking, officials added — though passengers on the plane were unaware it had been hijacked. After landing in Geneva, the co-pilot exited the cockpit using a rope and turned himself in to authorities. New England was expected to be hit hardest by the latest blast of winter weather. The National Weather Service called for 10 to 14 inches of snow in eastern Massachusetts and parts of Rhode Island. At Boston’s Logan International Airport, some airlines canceled flights ahead of Saturday night’s storm and delays were expected. Eight to 10 inches was to fall in Connecticut along its Rhode Island border. At its peak, the storm was expected to dump snow at the rate of 3 inches per hour, me teorologist William Babcock. SIDOMULYO — The ash and debris that Indonesia’s Mount Kelud blasted from its belly brought death and misery, and disrupted international air traffic. But for many of the millions of people cleaning up in the wake of the explosive eruption, it was also a money earner and a shot of life for their crops. “This is a blessing of the disaster,” said Imam Choiri, a farmer who was scraping up the ash from the road to use as fertilizer on his small vegetable plot a few kilometers from the crater of the rumbling mountain. Choiri said locals believe the ash helps drive away pests from crops. The eruption of the 1,731-meter (5,680-foot) -high mountain on Java island late Thursday was one of the most dramatic to hit Indonesia in recent years, with ash falling as far as 600 kilometers (370 miles) away. Four people, including a 97-year-old woman, were killed when the roofs of their homes caved in under the weight of ash. More than 100,000 people were evacuated to temporary shelters. On Saturday, scientists said Kelud’s activities were dying down, in line with its reputation as a mountain that blows its top dramatically but then quickly settles down for another 10 years or so. But authorities warned that water from its crater, along with rain, could bring deadly landslides of fresh ash and rocks down river beds into villages and valleys. Scores of diggers were collecting the fresh, easy-to-dig sand, packing the windfall into bags or onto trucks. “Kelud is a valuable source of livelihood to me and my family,” Harjito Huda, a sand miner from Ngancar village, said. Transportation Ministry spokesman Bambang Ervan said that the Juanda international airport in the country’s second-largest city, Surabaya, resumed operation late Saturday along with three others in Malang, Semarang and Cilacap. A total of seven airports on Java — Indonesia’s most densely populated island and home to more than half of the country’s 240 million people — had been closed because of ash on the runway and on planes. Three other airports in Bandung, Solo and Yogyakarta are scheduled to reopen later Sunday or Tuesday at the latest, Ervan said. KRASNAYA POLYANA, Russia — Nordic combined athlete Evgeniy Klimov won’t do double-duty for Russia after all at the Sochi Olympics. Klimov had been drafted into the five-man Russian ski jumping team for the large hill team event Monday due to an injury to Mikhail Maksimochkin, who broke two ribs in a training fall last week. The 20-year-old Klimov took three training jumps on Sunday but was not among the four jumpers listed on the start sheet for Monday’s ski jump team final. Klimov was unlikely to be near the podium in either event. Russia is not favored in the team jumping event, and although Klimov is a good ski jumper, he finished last in the cross-country component in the normal hill final of Nordic combined. The large hill Nordic combined final is Tuesday.
