Barry Manilow enjoys ‘intimate’ Broadway return Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK — It took a little while before Barry Manilow felt comfortable on Broadway. The Man Who Makes the Whole World Sing is used to far bigger venues than the 1,710-seat St. James Theatre, one of the smaller theaters on the Great White Way. “It’s a totally different feeling from the stage. I’m in their laps; they’re in my lap. It’s very, very intimate,” says Manilow. “This is like going to somebody’s house.” Manilow — and his fans dubbed Fanilows — are clearly enjoying his first return to Broadway in nearly 25 years. Though his opening was postponed due to bronchitis, the singer sounded and looked great during a recent quick interview. The New York City-born icon has had a street corner — at Seventh Ave. and 44th Street — temporarily renamed “Barry Manilow Way” and a caricature unveiled at Sardi’s restaurant. It’s a long way from where he began in the neighborhood of Williamsburg in Brookyn, where “I was lucky to get home

from school without getting beaten up.” He later moved to a Manhattan studio apartment so small that he had to sleep under his Steinway grand piano. His two-hour show — makeup dates have been added to “Manilow on Broadway” that now take the show into early March — includes all the hits, including “Could It Be Magic,” ‘’Mandy,” ‘’Copacabana” and “Can’t Smile Without You.” Manilow has sold over 80 million albums worldwide and this Christmas had a 50th hit — “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town” — on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary chart. “That was a nice Christmas present,” he says, sipping white wine. temporary. “Every few years, I go back into all the songs and I update them so that it never sounds like an oldies show. If you come to the shows, they’re full of muscle,” he says. “’Copacabana’ sounds like it could have been released yesterday.” After Broadway, Manilow says he’ll continue doing weekend gigs on the road, working on two albums and is most excited at the idea of getting a new musical off the ground: “Harmony,” which follows a group of singers through Weimar-era and then Nazi Germany. Manilow has written original songs for it and Bruce Sussman has contributed the story and lyrics. “It’s the best work I’ve ever done ever in my life,” Manilow says. At 69, Manilow vows to keep on going. “Yeah, I’m old as the hills and you would think I’d be out to pasture someplace because I’ve done everything, but nothing has changed,” he says. “I’m still hungry. I’ve still got a million ideas. I’m still strong and ready to create.”

BERLIN - If older women can’t find work in Hollywood they might want to come to Berlin, where this year’s film festival has been studded with performances by seasoned actresses that have put them and their movies in the running for top prizes. The 11-day cinema event, centered around the main competition of 19 films but showcasing hundreds more, winds up with an evening awards ceremony on Saturday. Jude Law, Anne Hathaway, Hugh Jackman, Matt Damon, Nicolas Cage and Catherine Deneuve all passed through, while after a string of critical flops at the start of the festival the reception has picked up. The two frontrunners for the coveted Golden Bear for best picture, which can help bring a low-budget movie to an international audience, centre around strong women in their 50s and 60s who overshadow the men around them. “Gloria”, arguably the biggest hit at the 63rd Berlin film festival, stars Paulina Garcia as the eponymous Gloria, a 58-year-old divorcee living alone in Santiago where she is determined to enjoy life to the full. DENPASAR - Security threats before and during the Bali gubernatorial election on May 15 becomes a serious concern of Bali Police line-up. In normal circumstances, a total 7,500 personnel will be alerted and that number will be increased pursuant to conditions of the expanding security disturbance. It was conveyed by the Operation Bureau Chief of Bali Police, Gede Alit Widana, during the dissemination on the readiness of organizing the Bali gubernatorial election 2013 in Wiswa Sabha Building, the Office of the Bali Governor, Denpasar. Alit Widana confirmed that Bali Police were ready to provide security around the Bali gubernatorial election.

“Bali Police are ready to secure the election and we urge all components to actively participate,” he said. He said that Bali Police would provide security to all candidate pairs of the gubernatorial election with embedded security for 24 hours by armed personnel. “It will be a kind bodyguard for candidate pairs,” he explained. In addition, he said, the Chief and ranks of Bali

Electoral Commission (KPUD) would also be secured. He added that all participating people in the campaigns, silent period and ballot counting would be secured, too. Aside from securing people, his party would also enforce strict security for the printing, distribution and division of ballot and its box. “Similarly, we will also firmly secure the ballot folding,” he said. Not only that, the location of campaigns from the start, route passed through to finish point would be kept tight. “Our officers will be on full alert at campaign site,” he said. To do all the security efforts, in normal situation Bali Police would deploy 7,500 personnel. “When the

security threat increases, we will deploy 12,000 personnel. Then, if the situation is increasingly precarious, police personnel will be assisted as much as possible by the Headquarters of National Police. However, we hope the security condition will be conducive to eliminate the need to deploy troops in large numbers,” he said while adding that Bali Police would also be assisted by Armed Forces and community protection through civilian militia groups (Pamswakarsa). It was said there should be cooperation between Bali Police as coordinator, relevant agencies and the community. “Any information on security breach should be quickly delivered to minimize the

disruption so that the election can run safely, smoothly, orderly and under control,” he said. In order to strengthen the security of the gubernatorial election, Bali Police had also checked the readiness of police, riot squad as well as the equipment. “We will also conduct training in respective county police for the security of the gubernatorial election with the simulation of handling situation ranging from peaceful, riot to anarchical situation, even from looting to chaos. Bali News The motorcycles robbery case seemed to have gone wider after interrogating accused I Gusti Agung Prana and other witnesses. Turns out three names known as police officers working in Bali Police and East Denpasar Police were also involved in it yet it is still being further investigated. They are SY, PI and RE as those auctioning the motorcycles from Prana. Besides the three, there were also others such as WS, AR, SU and KI as stated by a source last Friday (15/2). It was stated it has been difficult for the Criminal Research troops under APC I Gede Ardana and Ipda Haryanto to reveal the case as the motorcycles stolen have moved to other hands. Until now AR, SU and KI have been captured which lead to WS who stated the robber was Prana. Accused when captured had 13 stolen motorcycles with him.

WS who’s also fencer stated that the motorcycle he took is being auctioned by SY who has four stolen motorcycles with him. The question now is why would SY do such thing. “SY is known as one of the East Denpasar Fast Attack troop. I’m also curious why he do such thing and that four motorcycles are actually seen in SY’s house,” the source continued. Not only that, WS also admitted that he has auctioned motorcycles to two police officers working at Bali Police. RE continued to auction three of them while PI one motorcycle. So far 13 motorcycles have been secured. Head of the Criminal Research, PC Ambariyadi Wijaya, admitted a further investigation is taking place and if there are strong evidences that these police are involved, there will be legal processes taking place. Nasal tip vanishes as bitten by monkey AGAIN, another monkey bite case occurred in Klungkung. After claiming four victims earlier, the same monkey bit a resident of Kahuripan Tengah village, Banjarangkan, Klungkung, Friday (Feb 15). The victim was I Wayan Kisin whose nasal tip lost as had been pounced by the monkey. According to his wife, Wayan Ribek, the incident took place around 07:00 a.m. At that time, Kisin was picking garden balsam flowers in the field. While getting absorbed in picking flowers, a monkey suddenly pounced to her husband’s nose. To avoid from getting a more serious injury, Kisin defended himself by swinging his sickle. “Though, my husband attacked with a sickle, none of the attacks hit the monkey. It even managed to escape,” said Ribek. After biting, the monkey fled to escape, while Kisin aided by a neighbor happening to pass by took him to Klungkung Hospital.

Having got medical treatment and anti-rabies vaccine, Kisin was referred to Sanglah Hospital to get a follow-up on his nose. “The tip of my husband’s nose was torn and bitten by the monkey and its flesh lost. He was then referred to Sanglah Hospital to be operated on,” said Ribek. Meanwhile, according to Wayan Apriana, a relative of Kisin, the monkey biting him was the same monkey as biting the other four villagers earlier. “At our village, there were two victims and three at neighboring village. Even, a victim is unable to walk as its legs were bitten by the monkey, said Apriana. Such monkey had emerged since about a month ago and people with the help of the military officers had pursued it, but they failed. “Until now, the monkey is still at large, even it comes back to bite,” he said. Up to Saturday, Kisin was still in care at Sanglah Hospital. (san)

Reviving face-to-face communication APPROXIMATELY 150 pieces of scarecrows were hung on frangipani trees in the courtyard of Lower Campus of the Undiksha Singaraja, Thursday night (Feb 14). Hundreds of students swarmed the scarecrows while taking pictures together happily. The scarecrows entirely made from empty coconut shells were part of installation art and performing art to give another meaning to the celebration of Valentine’s Day. Such an activity was initiated by the Student Senate of the Faculty of Linguistics and Art Studies (FBS) of Undiksha along with the art communities of Undiksha students. It was commenced from early morning until late evening. In the morning, the students of Cigarette Butts Community held a performing

art by dancing under the frangipani trees. Each student painted his body pink and made up themselves with funny mimic. After that, they hang dry coconuts onto frangipani trees. In the evening, after all scarecrows had been hung, the students then casting light effects in the area of frangipani trees so that it produced impressive and magical atmosphere. Moreover, the very old frangipani trees were likely to wither and die. Students took pictures under the frangipani tree as if recording a fact that would soon became a memory or disappeared altogether without impression. Coordinator of the activities, Panca Gautama, said the installation and performing art was intended to interpret the sense of Valentine’s Day. During this time,

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Beijing’s new air pollution steps get poor reception Reuters

BEIJING - New plans to reduce air pollution in Beijing fell flat on Tuesday, judging by initial online reaction, as the capital’s mayor unveiled measures to ease the chronic problem that has triggered growing public anger. The smoggy metropolis’ already notorious air pollution hit a record earlier this month, with pollution 30-45 times above recommended safety levels, blanketing Beijing in a thick, noxious cloud that grounded flights and forced people indoors. The issue has caused widespread public outrage, alarming the ruling Communist Party which values stability above all else, and has so far failed to rein in pollution despite repeated pledges to get tough. Speaking at the opening of the annual session of the city’s largely rubber stamp legislature, Beijing mayor Wang Anshun said the government would take 180,000 old vehicles off the road this year and control the “excessive” growth of new car sales. The heating systems of 44,000 old, single-story homes and coalburning boilers in the city centre will also be replaced with clean energy systems, Wang said in a speech carried live on state television. “We will speed up the construction of a beautiful city with blue skies, green earth and clean water,” he said. However, comments on China’s popular Twitter-like microblogging site Sina Weibo suggest Wang will

have his job cut out for him convincing people the government is finally serious about tackling pollution. “These plans are just dreams,” wrote one user. Others said the phasing out of old cars would make little difference in a city where about 250,000 new cars hit the road every year, albeit with supposedly higher emissions standards. “These ‘old cars’ are what the ordinary people drive. You people can only dare talk about this subject when you start phasing out all the cars officials drive,” wrote another user. Wang added that Beijing would cut the density of major air pollutants by 2 percent this year and improve the monitoring and public release of information about air pollution. “We will proactively push for the use of new energy-saving technologies and products and promote green, low carbon production and lifestyles,” he said.

Pollution levels in Beijing regularly exceed 500 on an index that measures particulate matter in the air with a diameter of 2.5 micrometers. A level above 300 is considered hazardous, while the World Health Organisation recommends a daily level of no more than 20. This winter’s pollution has been so severe that even usually pliant state media has criticised government inaction, partly because it can’t be hidden from the public unlike other sensitive subjects such as high-level corruption. Smoke from factories and heating plants, winds blowing in from the Gobi Desert and fumes from millions of vehicles can combine to blanket the city in a pungent shroud for days. English-speaking residents sometimes call the city “Greyjing” or “Beige-jing”. Other major cities, particularly in northern China, have experienced similar problems.

WEST SENECA, New York — In a school hallway, a U.S. teacher takes her students to the library, leading a single-file line of giggling boys and girls that’s perfectly ordinary until you get to a sleek white robot with a video screen showing the face of a smiling, chubby-cheeked boy. Devon Carrow’s life-threatening allergies don’t allow him to go to school. But the robot with a wireless video hookup gives him the school experience remotely, allowing him to participate in class, stroll through the hallways, hang out at recess and even take to the auditorium stage when there’s a show. What’s most remarkable is how unremarkable this technology is viewed by his classmates. In a class of 7-year-olds raised on video games, avatars and remotecontrolled toys, they don’t see a robot. They just see Devon. Just before class one recent

day, a girl leaned toward the robot to tell Devon the joke making the rounds at school: Why did the boy eat his homework? The teacher told him it was a piece of cake. While making get-well cards for him during a hospital stay last year, his classmates all drew him as a boy, not a bot. “In the classroom, the kids are like, ‘Devon, come over, we’re doing Legos. Show us your Legos,’” says teacher Dawn Voelker. “I wondered how the little kids would take to him, thinking they’d be amazed,” adds Principal Kathleen Brachmann. “But I think kids are so tech-savvy now that they accept it more than we do.” Even Devon doesn’t quite get what all the fuss is about. Steering the four-wheeled robot through school and spinning around to see the classmates is just another mouse-and-keyboard challenge. “It’s so cool because it’s like

playing a game on the computer,” says the boy. “It’s like your objective is to just survive.” For a year now, Devon has attended school using “VGo,” a robot shaped a little like a chess pawn. Since it was introduced in 2011 by VGo Communications, a handful of students across the country have used it.

Even, farmers should be willing to wait in line. As a result, their planting schedule delayed whereas the rice seedlings had been ready, including abundant irrigation water. The lack of tractor service has become an annual phenomenon because only a few people who want to pursue such agricultural service business. Difficult terrain of rice field also triggers the lack of tractor services. “Condition of rice field here is a bit difficult, it’s up and down. Besides, residents are also rarely willing to pursue the tractor services,” said Sugiarta, one of the farmers. He explained the demand for tractor services during the planting season always increased. Unfortunately, the service providers actually reduced. Moreover, residents only relied on local labor. “There are no migrants here wanting to rent a tractor, so that its availability is minimal,” he said. Sugiarta added many people could actually afford to buy a tractor, but no labor was willing to operate it. He claimed to have a medium-sized hand tractor. However, the device could

not be operated because there was no labor. “My tractor can be operated after getting a labor. Even, I have to wait it,” he sighed. Due to minimal supply and high demand, the price of tractor services skyrocketed. For a single day, the tractor rental reached IDR 200,000 whereas it was previously only around IDR 180,000. If condition of rice field was not steep, the operator could plow up to one hectare of rice field per day. However, if the condition of rice field was steep, it could maximally plow up to a half hectare, or even less. Difficult terrain caused only few people to be able to operate the tractor. On the other hand, people less favored such kind of job because the need of tractor was only seasonal. During the planting season, providers of tractor service were ascertained to get many orders while after that they were mostly unemployed. Moreover, at the local village, the planting season was always simultaneous. Such condition would trigger the lack of tractor services. Steep condition of rice field, said Sugiarta, required a special skill to operate the tractor. Divers searched a lake near the city of Chelyabinsk, where a hole several feet wide had opened in the ice, but had so far failed to find any large fragments, officials said. The scarcity of evidence on the ground fuelled scores of conspiracy theories over what caused the fireball and its huge shockwave on Friday in the area which plays host to many defense industry plants. Nationalist leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky told reporters in Moscow it could have been “war-mongers” in the United States. “It’s not meteors falling. It’s a new weapon being tested by the Americans,” he said. A priest from near the explosion site called it an act of God. Social media sites were flooded with speculation about what might have caused the explosion, if not a meteorite. “Honestly, I would be more inclined to believe that this was some military thing,” said Oksana Trufanova, a local human rights activist. Asked about the speculation, an official at the local branch of Russia’s Emergencies Ministry simply replied: “Rubbish”. Residents of Chelyabinsk, an industrial city 1,500 km (950 miles) east of Moscow, heard an explosion, saw a bright light and then felt a shockwave that blew out windows and damaged the wall and roof of a zinc plant. A fireball traveling at a speed of 30 km (19 miles) per second according to Russian space agency Roscosmos, blazed across the horizon, leaving a long white trail visible as far as 200 km (125 miles) away. Malaysia refused entry on Saturday to independent Senator Nick Xenophon, with an immigration official saying the decision was made because he had participated in an illegal street rally for electoral reform in the Southeast Asian country last year. The Malaysian government

is bracing for an election within months that is expected to be the closest in the former British colony’s history. “We made immediate and strenuous representations on his behalf, not only in relation to him being detained, but into him being allowed to be in Malaysia,” Gillard told reporters in Melbourne, where Xenophon had arrived earlier on Sunday. “Clearly we didn’t succeed. We will continue to pursue this issue with the Malaysian government.” Xenophon was part of an unofficial delegation seeking to discuss the coming elections with members

MOSCOW - G20 finance ministers on Saturday moved to calm fears of looming “economic warfare” on the currency markets, pledging they would not target specific forex rates or devalue currencies to make them more competitive. The jitters -- similar to previous disputes with China -- have been set off by Japan’s plan of monetary easing to boost inflation and activity by reducing the value of the yen under new Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. “We will refrain from competitive devaluation. We will not target our exchange rates for competitive purposes,” said the communique after the G20 finance meeting in Moscow under Russia’s presidency. It echoed a similar recent statement by the G7 richest nations which like the G20 statement was also approved by Japan, whose monetary policy has been vehemently criticised by the West in recent weeks. The G20 statement set a commitment to move “more rapidly toward more market-determined exchange rate systems and exchange rate flexibility to reflect underlying fundamentals.” Striving to give the impression of a united front among the world’s top 20 economies, the G20 ministers vowed to “work more closely with one another so we can grow together. The statement on currencies differed from the G7 communique by aiming to move towards market-set forex rates, to take account of G20 member states like China which have a more managed economy. The G7, by contrast, had declared a simple commitment to “market-determined exchange rates”. International Monetary Fund managing director Christine Lagarde, who attended the meeting, described the statement as a “heartening” display of international cooperation. “We think that talk of currency wars is overblown... The good news is that the G20 responded with cooperation rather than conflict today,” she said. British Finance Minister George Osborne had earlier warned against “economic warfare” if states were to seek to outdo each other with competitive devaluations of currencies. Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov said in a concluding news conference that “only the market determines the level of this or that currency”, while insisting that the G20 had a “uniform” opinion on the matter. A senior US administration official, who asked not to named, described the statement on exchange rates as a leap in the language for some G20 states and an evolution from previous positions. For the first time in several international meetings, the concerns over currencies have overshadowed the economic troubles of the debt-ridden euro zone which leaders hope is heading to a gentle recovery.

WASHINGTON — U.S. factories slowed production in January after two solid months of cranking out goods. The weakness mainly reflected a big drop in output at auto factories that is likely temporary. Manufacturing output fell 0.4 percent in January from December, the Federal Reserve said Friday. The decline followed increases of 1.1 percent in December and 1.7 percent in November. Overall industrial production edged down 0.1 percent in January compared with December. Output In mining, the category that covers oil and gas drilling, fell 1 percent. Utility output jumped 3.5 percent, as a cold snap led more households to turn up their heat. Factory output, the most important component of industrial production, was dragged lower by a steep 3.2 percent decline in auto and auto parts production. The auto industry is coming off its best year for sales in five years, one of the few bright spots in an

otherwise bleak manufacturing sector. Sales continue to rise, so production will likely rebound in February. Still, many factories outside the auto industry have been hurt by a slowdown in consumer spending and weaker global growth that has dampened demand for U.S. exports. Economists expect healthier output in 2013, partly because U.S. companies are sitting on large amounts of cash and appear poised to invest some of it in equipment and machinery. Economies in Europe are also healing, and growth in Asia is expected to improve. “Global growth will still be fairly weak this year, which will prevent industry from firing on all cylinders. But there’s no denying that industrial conditions have recently improved,” said Paul Dales, senior U.S. economist at Capital Economics. A second report Friday showed that manufacturing activity in the New York area posted a big gain in February. The New York Federal Reserve’s Empire State survey rose to 10.04 in February, compared with

a negative 7.78 in January. It was the biggest one-month improvement in this index in more than two years. And a closely watched survey released earlier this month suggests overall manufacturing conditions are improving. Manufacturing activity grew last month at the fastest pace since April, according to the Institute for Supply Management. Factories saw growth in new orders, hired more workers and boosted their stockpiles after two months of declines, the survey noted. Slower growth in stockpiles was a key reason the economy shrank at an annual rate of 0.1 percent in the October-December quarter, the first contraction in 3 ½ years. Deep cuts in defense spending and fewer exports also contributed to the decline. Still, economists expect that figure will be revised in the coming months to show a small increase. That’s because December trade data, which wasn’t available when the government calculated its first estimate for fourth-quarter growth, showed solid growth in exports.

The Head of Denpasar Spatial Planning and Housing (DTRP) Agency, Kadek Kusuma Diputra, admitted on Friday (Feb 15) if the basement parking plan at Puputan Badung Square could not be realized this year because the fund allocated by provincial government for the museum construction was only IDR 5 billion. “Probably, the project cannot be realized,” said Kusuma Diputra. Uncertainty of the basement parking development plan at Puputan Badung Square was also evident from the existing budget in the DTRP. In 2013, the DTRP did not allocate any budget for the development of basement parking. In the presentation some time ago, the DTRP had planned a number of physical developments during 2013. “Indeed, it is not allocated for the development of basement parking at Puputan Badung Square this year,” he said. Earlier, in the presentation made during a meeting between the DTRP and Commission B, the planning consultant Ketut Rana Wiarcha explained about the details of museum to be built. Similarly, the condition of central parking located in the basement of Puputan Badung Square that would be able to accommodate 400 units of four-wheeled vehicles. After seeing the illustration of the museum and parking space, a number of inputs were submitted by the members of Commission B such as Wayan Mariyana Wandhira, Wayan Suadi Putra, Arya Saputra, Ricky Teguh Argawa, Ketut Sugiata and Ketut Resmiyasa. Mariyana Wandhira judged there were still some shortcomings in the design of museum to be built in the northern part of Puputan Badung Square. He saw the heroic values of Puputan Badung had not been reflected in the museum building. He hoped the divine inspiration of Puputan Badung could be felt from the grandeur of the building to be made at such heritage area. Moreover, several buildings around it had owned high historical values. Not only that, Arya Saputra and Suadi Putra also suggested in order the entrance to the central parking could be made through the north or south because in the eastern part, namely the road in front of Bali Museum and Jagatnatha Temple, was closed to traffic. Bangli has a unique temple showing a strong Chinese influence known as Dalem Balingkang Temple. Structure of the temple is unique because it was formerly said to serve as a palace to avoid the attack from other kings. Formerly, the Dalem Balingkang Temple belonged to the temple complex of Tanggun Titi—standing for the end of bridge and had a spring. In this temple complex lie some shrines dedicated to Ratu Ngurah Sakti Tanggun Titi, Ratu Mas Melanting, Ratu Sakti Gede Penyarikan and Sang Hyang Haji Saraswati. The second complex after passing a square occurs a cangapit building, namely an entrance equipped with a monarchic sitting when the king watched the Jro Gede mepada surrounding the temple. The middle courtyard only has a few buildings, only consisting of a meeting hall, the abode of all deities and a shrine of Ratu Ayu Subandar. The shrine is used to worship Kang Ci Wi and is highly believed by Chinese descendant community to bring in blessings. In the main complex or innermost courtyard lies the worship place of Petak Grand Palace comprising the eleven and nine-tiered meru shrines. Similarly, there is also ancestral worship of Dalem Balingkang in the form of brick chamber and seven-tiered meru shrine

to remind of the Seven Deities. Besides, there are long pavilion with 24 columns and 20 columns as well as mundar-mundar pavilion with 16 columns. History of the temple is much revealed in the Sukawana Inscription (Goris, 1954). It said that Sukawana village was hit by storms and the palace of Jaya Pangus was badly damaged, so that Jong Les moved to Balingkang. Balingkang itself is derived from two words Bali + ingkang. Orally and based on written evidence, it is associated with the wedding of King Jaya Pangus Harkajalancana who ruled during the period of Caka Year 1103-1191 or 1181-1269 AD. King Jaya Pangus had two queens, Paduka Bhatari Sri Parameswari Indujaketana and Paduka Sri Mahadewi Cacangkaja Cihna. QUITO, Ecuador — Rafael Correa, a dynamic, polemical economist whose leftist government has won broad backing from the lower classes as it leads Latin America in social spending, is expected to sail to a second re-election Sunday as the Andean nation’s president. His leading opponent, former Banco de Guayaquil executive president Guillermo Lasso, trailed Correa in pre-election polls by more than 20 points in the field of eight candidates. Correa, 48, has brought uncharacteristic political stability to an oil-exporting nation of 14.6 million people that cycled through seven presidents in the decade before he first took office in 2007. He won re-election in April 2009 after voters approved a constitutional rewrite that mandated a new ballot, and he would be legally barred from running again following a victory Sunday. To avoid a run-off, Correa needed a simple majority or 40 percent of the vote plus a 10-point margin over the No. 2 vote-getter. Arnold Pistorius spoke with The Associated Press and two other South African journalists about his nephew’s arrest in the killing of Reeva Steenkamp, who was shot four times on the morning of Valentine’s Day. Arnold Pistorius spoke to reporters from the garden of his three-story home in the eastern suburbs of South Africa’s capital, Pretoria. The statement, the first on camera and directly made in person by Pistorius’ family, also came out strongly against prosecutors seeking to upgrade the charge against Pistorius to one of premeditated murder, which carries a sentence of life in prison. “After consulting with legal representatives, we deeply regret the allegation of premeditated murder,” Arnold Pistorius said. “We have no doubt there is no substance to the allegation and that the state’s own case, including its own forensic evidence, strongly refutes any possibility of a premeditated murder or murder as such.” He said the family was “battling to come to terms with Oscar being charged with murder.” The track star’s arrest in the killing of 29-year-old Steenkamp shocked South Africa, where Pistorius was a national hero and icon dubbed the Blade Runner for his high-tech carbon fiber running blades and revered for overcoming his disability to compete at the London Olympics. She was discovered in a pool of blood before dawn Thursday by police called to Pistorius’ upscale home in a gated community. Authorities said she had been shot four times, and a 9 mm pistol was recovered at the home. Pistorius remains held at a police station pending a bail hearing Tuesday. Police have already said they’ll oppose Pistorius being released before trial. A premeditated murder charge also makes it more difficult for his defense team to get bail. On Saturday afternoon, Pistorius’ lawyers visited the Brooklyn police station in Pretoria, where the athlete is being held. His younger sister Aimee, who stood alongside Arnold Pistorius when he made his statement, also was at the police station later. There will be a variety of hearings before Pistorius, 26, could go on trial. In South Africa, there are no juries, so a judge ultimately would decide Pistorius’ guilt or innocence, sometimes with the help of two advisers. At an initial hearing Friday, Pistorius sobbed and held his head in his hands at times. He has yet to enter a plea in the case. The family denial that Pistorius committed murder doesn’t necessarily mean that they say he didn’t shoot her, as murder is a legal term. Initial speculation immediately after the shooting Thursday suggested that it could have been accidental, though police say they are not currently considering that. Arnold Pistorius did not discuss the circumstances of the shooting, but said that his nephew and Steenkamp had become very close since they started dating in November. “They had plans together and Oscar was happier in his private life than he had been for a long time,” the uncle said.

JAKARTA - An observer, Hanta Yudhya, said Anas Urbaningrum’s future as chief of the ruling Democrat Party could be determined at the party’s national leadership meeting to be held here on Sunday. He said regional and district board members who would attend the meeting would be the key to Anas’s future fate. If the decision of the party’s supreme council would be strengthened, he said, party leaders must be able to influence and convince them. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono as chairman of the party’s supreme council recently decided to take over the running of the party to allow Anas Urbaningrum, as party’s general chairman, to concentrate on dealing with his problems. Anas has so far been beset by allegations that he has been involved in a corruption case. He has always denied it while the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has never named him suspect in any case. He said Anas meanwhile could also mobilize the regional and district board members to reject the decision. “If the regional and district board members would accept, the decision would be extra-constitutional but if they reject the decision to save the party would be unconstitutional,” he said. Hanta said the party’s problem rose because the leadership of chief patron Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was not as powerful as that of Prabowo Subianto in the

Gerindra Party. The Democrat Party’s deputy secretary general, Saan Mustopa, meanwhile said on the occasion that the meeting was only for consolidation and not for replacing Anas. “The national leadership meeting tomorrow is not a forum for electing a new general chairperson like a congress but it would only be used for consolidating cadres to address existing problems,” he said. He said the aim of the meeting was finding ways to restore party’s electability. He said the presence of two central figures in the party namely the chief of the party’s supreme council, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, and the party’s general chairman, Anas Urbaningrum occurred because cadres still needed Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono as a party figure. “We must admit that because of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono the party could win the general elections in 2004 and 2009 and also lead him to presidency in 2004 and 2009,” he said. He said the party now wished to transform his position as a party figure because by law he could no longer be able to seek re-election in the next presidential election in 2014 as he would have been in the post for two terms by then.

PALEMBANG - World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) in Indonesia said that at least 80 Sumatran Tigers (panthera tigris sumatrae) are breeding well in South Bukit Barisan National Park. “Dozens of tigers live well in the forests of South Sumatra and Lampung,” said Project Leader of WWF Indonesia Job Charles here on Sunday. According to him, despite the fact that human activities have threatened the tigers’ habitat, the breeding of this species pans out in Sumatra’s national parks. The success of the tiger breeding is thanks to the cooperation between nature lovers and the local community who help protect the habitat of the tigers.

“The WWF along with other institutions and local communities are continuously preserving the habitat in order to promote the tiger’s breeding and increase the population,” said Charles. The NGO activists, said Charles, conduct patrol in the habitat regularly. According to the WWF, the population of tigers on Sumatra Island is around 200 heads. “The species will not extinct if the whole communities are actively helping preserve their habitats and let the tigers breed optimally,” said Charles. Previously, Sarah Christie, Zoological Society of London (ZSL)’s head of regional conservation said in a statement that a camera trap caught video of a mother tiger and her two cubs in

a protected Sumatran forest, the first evidence of breeding in this location, conservationists say. The footage was captured in Sumatra’s Sembilang National Park. Scientists from the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) have documented evidence before of the endangered species in nearby Berbak National Park in Sembilang Conservation area, Jambi Province. The video of these big cats shows the mother and her two youngsters walking past the camera. Scientists said they estimate the cubs are less than a year old. They live in their original habitat in mangrove forest, said Sarah. “We will continue working with leaders of both national parks as well as the government to ensure the areas are better protected and well patrolled,” she said.

Rosberg denies Mercedes reshuffles destabilised F1 team

Nico Rosberg is confident the late changes to Mercedes’ management structure ahead of the 2013 Formula 1 season will not destabilise the team in any way. Long-time Mercedes motorsport chief Norbert Haug stepped down in December, with ex-Williams man Toto Wolff taking his place last month. There were also rumours of further major technical signings plus the ousting of team boss Ross Brawn, who ultimately stayed in his position. Rosberg believes that because the core technical team, now led by Aldo Costa, was in place during 2012, the new W04’s creation will not have been affected by the turbulence. “This season shouldn’t be affected much at all, not initially anyway because the main people in charge of building this car haven’t changed,” said Rosberg. “So there is still a lot of stability in that region.” The German thinks the reshuffle at the top of Mercedes will ultimately be beneficial. “Going forward, looking at the big decisions for next year and things like that, there are some big changes coming in,” Rosberg said. “And that’s where these management changes will have effect, it’s more long term. “That is a good thing, because short term we need stability and long term, to become an even better racing team. “I think change, to some extent, has been a good thing, and will be a good thing going forward.”

What is important now is to focus on the next one.”

Nasal tip vanishes as bitten by monkey

AGAIN, another monkey bite case occurred in Klungkung. After claiming four victims earlier, the same monkey bit a resident of Kahuripan Tengah village, Banjarangkan, Klungkung, Friday (Feb 15). The victim was I Wayan Kisin whose nasal tip lost as had been pounced by the monkey. According to his wife, Wayan Ribek, the incident took place around 07:00 a.m. At that time, Kisin was picking garden balsam flowers in the field. While getting absorbed in picking flowers, a monkey suddenly pounced to her husband’s nose. To avoid from getting a more serious injury, Kisin defended himself by swinging his sickle. “Though, my husband attacked with a sickle, none of the attacks hit the monkey. It even managed to escape,” said Ribek. After biting, the monkey fled to escape, while Kisin aided by a neighbor happening to pass by took him to Klungkung Hospital.

APPROXIMATELY 150 pieces of scarecrows were hung on frangipani trees in the courtyard of Lower Campus of the Undiksha Singaraja, Thursday night (Feb 14). Hundreds of students swarmed the scarecrows while taking pictures together happily.
