NICOSIA – At least four people were killed in clashes with Libyan security forces, opposition websites and NGOs said on Thursday, as the country faced a nationwide “Day of Anger” called by cyber-activists. Bali News Waterpark project in BTDC

Allegedly unlicensed, violates shoreline Mangupura (Bali Post)—

Bali Tourism Development Corporation (BTDC) has started to build a waterpark or water attraction in the area of Nusa Dua. Unfortunately, the project started to be worked on in fact has not had permit or license. Even, it is alleged to have violated the shoreline. According to information, the waterpark was built between Nusa Dua and Peninsula Island. The party of Badung House has also received a report about the unlicensed development as well as the allegation of shoreline violation. Of course, the issue was questioned by the House. Secretary of Commission A in the Badung House, I Made Duama, Wednesday (Feb 16), said the report on the existence of the project had entered the Commission A. He also regretted if in reality it was indeed true that project was unlicensed and did not comply with the shoreline. In other words, two very fatal mistakes had been carried out. He said if the BTDC had submitted a permit, the waterpark should be built according to designation. Violation against shoreline might not

happen. When following-up the report on the allegation of distorting waterpark development, Duama said his party would immediately make a site inspection. “We will immediately make a site inspection to location,” said Duama. In line with Duama, another legislator, I Made Darma, also questioned the attitude of BTDC. He emphasized though the waterpark located within the authority of BTDC, the project should be completed with permit from the government. Similarly, government should do a review on the project because the beach was the only remaining public space in the region of BTDC. “If the remaining land is also used for the project of BTDC, let alone violate the shoreline, the local community will no longer have a place of

recreation,” he said. Meanwhile, Division Head of Facilities and Infrastructure of Badung Government Tourism Office (Disparda), I Nyoman Suardana, when contacted recently claimed not to know about the waterpark development in the BTDC area. He asserted that Badung Government Tourism Office did not received application for a permit from the investor. “Application for permission has not been entered. Likewise, we do not know about the existence of the project,” he said. When asking for confirmation about this matter, Managing Director of BTDC, I Made Mandra, was not willing to give more comments. The Indonesian Hotels and Restaurants Association (PHRI) of Bali Chapter asked the Bali Provincial Government to implement the moratorium selectively and strictly without compromise. The association serving as initiator was ready to sit together with stakeholders to have a discussion related to the policy. “We do support the selective moratorium. Presumably, if there is a development of tourism facility like hotels supporting the quality improvement of the environment, it can enhance the branding of Bali and is worth considering to be given a permit,” said Chairman of PHRI Bali, Cokorda Artha Ardhana Sukawati, in Denpasar recently. According to him, selective moratorium needed to be done so the policy of Governor of Bali would not turn to prolonged polemic. The three regencies becoming the target of moratorium such as Badung, Denpasar and Gianyar had clearly stated to reject the policy with the reason that they did not want to hamper investment. “Myriad cultural and customary activities are organized in Gianyar. Of course, they require a cost which is not relatively small. To that end, we want to get a right portion and existence of synergy. We’d like to reach harmonious development in cultural tourism and do not harm each other,” he said. Cok Ace who is also the Regent of Gianyar said that moratorium on hotels in southern Bali region would be valid until there was a result of studies on the carrying capacity of Bali tourism. The proposal of moratorium had been submitted by PHRI Bali more than 10 years ago during the reign of Governor Ida Bagus Oka. “The main consideration is equalization. Some members of PHRI Bali in the regencies outside the southern Bali have difficulty to develop because of the tourism development seemed to have been focused on the southern Bali region,” he explained. Based on the result of survey made by PHRI Bali in 2010, the number of star rated hotels and boutique hotels in Bali reached 2,260 units with a total of 56,971 rooms throughout Bali. Of this amount, 88.5 percent or 50,436 hotel rooms were focused on southern Bali consisting of 36,947 rooms in Badung, 10,097 rooms in Denpasar and 3,410 rooms in Gianyar. Meanwhile, the result of survey showed a greater number than that of Bali Provincial Gov-

ernment. Based on the record of Bali Province, there were currently 2,190 units of accommodation with 45,557 rooms where 85 percent of them were concentrated on southern Bali. “The accommodation in our survey does not include condotel, residence and apartment,” he said. PHRI Bali hoped that government could improve the infrastructure in the regencies beyond the southern Bali. By doing so, investors did not mind investing those regions. PHRI also assessed the need for guidance to the community outside southern Bali who could not accept the existence of tourism. “Sometimes, investors find it difficult to invest in the area where people are unable to accept the existence of tourism. The most common problems faced are the approval given by the community or companion permit as requirement of the hotel development,” he said. According to him, coaching was also required so there would be no product duplication in other regions as existing in the three regions in South Bali. “Tourism development in other regions must prioritize local wisdom. Do not duplicate the products existing in South Bali. In case of duplication, tourism will grow unattractive and then vanishes,” he said. Meanwhile, the Bali Regional Council of the Indonesian Forum for the Environment (WALHI), Wayan Suardana, assessed that moratorium should be done until there was a holistic and integral assessment about Bali such as on the carrying and accommodating capacity of Bali. Government should continue working to improve the infrastructure outside South Bali to attract investors. “A moratorium will make the development in Bali balanced because the overcrowding development in southern Bali will result in environmental damage. There are many spatial violations committed due to uncontrolled development of hotels in southern Bali,” he added. The favored regions by many investors are generally located in coastal areas such as Tanah Ampo, Amed or Kubu in Karangasem. Meanwhile, the most popular and wanted region in Buleleng is Gerokgak. High interest of investors to build hotels and restaurants in the area also has something to do with the government’s plan to build some infrastructures such as airport at Gerokgak, Buleleng Regency and cruise harbor at Tanah Ampo, Karangasem Regency. Art Building Neglected Ceiling Broke, Toilet Not Working Singaraja (Bali Post) –

The Gede Manik Art Building in Udayana Street, Singaraja is being totally unmaintained. A building that’s suppose to be filled with culture and arts performance also presentations seemed filthy and not an art building at all. From Bali Post’s observation last Wednesday (16/2) the wall paints started to peel off and a number of crafted wood sides are gone meanwhile all corners ceilings holed and some woods are broken also stuck. Not only that, the toilets as main facility is also not functioning having no water channeled to it. Even so visitors keep using the toilets causing floors dirty and unfriendly smell. All this time the building has been rented to the public with quite high fee, not only culture arts events but also business or commerce events. “So it should’ve been managed and maintained from the rent

payments. But all this time where has it gone to,” a resident who admitted rented the building once for an end of year meeting stated. Head of Culture and Tourism Agency for Buleleng, Putu Tastra Wijaya, when asked for his comment on this, every year he has suggested a maintenance budget for the building as a tourism support and suggested to be priority in every Regional Budget and Expenses (APBD) discussion. Yet, by the time the APBD is handed out, this suggestion was not agreed and not given, “This budget for the art building maintenance has been suggested but never agreed.” (kmb)

Illegal Money Changer Keeps Increasing Mangupura (Bali Post) -

Illegal money changers in Badung still exists and keeps on increasing reaching hundreds. Not only it affects official money changers, but this is a crime act and affects the image of Bali’s tourism. Foreign Value Traders Association (APVA) Bali stated this during a meeting with connected side from the Badung House of Representatives in Badung last Wednesday (16/ 2). He admitted did not know what the source of the fire was. There were no casualties in this incident and witness Wayan Wage (40) a neighbor did try help in putting out the fire. Yet due to the house materials being flammable and there’s a 3 kg gas tube explosion, the fire got bigger and quicker burning the whole house and can’t be put off by manual equipments like tree twigs. An entrepreneur from Jatiluwih, Penebel, I Ketut Sukarta (54) was devastated as IDR 90 million that he just took from Indonesian State Bank (Bank BNI) Kediri Branch was gone while buying cigarettes near where he was topping up fuel in Banjar Abianlalang Petrol Station, Wanasari Village, Tabanan last Wednesday (16/2). The incident happened around 12 pm where the black plastic bagged cash was left on the front passenger seat, “After topping up fuel I wanted to smoke but I have none so I went to a shop nearby to get it and left the car for a while.” The vehicle’s engine was still on and unlocked. When he turned to his car he did saw a person coming near his car and opened the

door. He straight ran back to his car but that suspected person has gone away with another person riding a Supra motorcycle towards Tabanan. He was right the black plastic bag was gone and sure that suspected person did it. Victim has tried to chase them up yet failed and so went to report it to Tabanan Police. In the report, victim admitted did not understand or know that someone has followed him after coming from the bank. According to him, he was on his way home but dropped by to top up fuel first. The money that he took out was going to be used for paying corns at Jegu Village, Penebel. After it is reported, police then take action and investigate the case by sending officers to several areas. ZANZIBAR, Tanzania – A military ammunition depot in Tanzania’s largest city blew up overnight in a series of explosions that leveled homes, killed at least 20 people and wounded about 145 others. Thousands ran for their lives from blasts that were felt 20 kilometers (12 miles) away. Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda said several houses and a school were leveled during Wednesday night’s explosions, which sent huge orange bursts into the night sky over Dar es Salaam. Debris showered parts of the city 15 kilometers (10 miles) from the Gongola Mboto military base where the depot was located. It was at least the second such ammunition depot explosion at a military base in Dar es Salaam since 2009. Military spokesman Lt. Col. Kapambala Mgawe said 20 people have been confirmed killed. He said the explosions were accidental but gave no details. A hospital administrator, Mussa Wambura, said about 145 people were injured, some “badly hit by the blasts.” The blasts closed the city’s international airport, near the Gongola Mboto military base. Some 4,000 residents were evacu-

When the explosions hit, thousands of people living in nearby neighborhoods fled, said Julius Kejo, a Red Cross worker helping at a shelter for displaced people. “It was panic. Now at the centers we are trying to get them connected with their relatives.” The military on Thursday continued to move people away from depots where munitions that haven’t detonated are stored, Kejo said. “Even today they are telling people to get out of the area,” he said. Tour boat sinks in Vietnam; 12 dead from 9 nations Associated Press Writer

HA LONG BAY, Vietnam – An anchored boat packed with sleeping travelers sank early Thursday in Vietnam’s scenic Ha Long Bay, killing 12 people from nine countries in the deadliest tour boat accident since the country opened to foreign visitors 25 years ago. Vacationers from the U.S., Britain, Australia, Japan, Russia, France, Sweden and Switzerland have been confirmed dead, along with a Vietnamese tour guide, the government said. Another nine foreigners and six locals were rescued by other tour boats in the bay’s emerald waters. Ha Long Bay is one of the country’s top tourist attractions, drawing more than 5 million visitors a year to see the stunning jagged rock formations that dot the coastline. Many visitors stay overnight on wooden boats equipped with sleeping cabins. Survivors reported seeing a wooden plank on their ship ripping

away at around 5 a.m. as the vessel was anchored for the night, followed by gushing water inundating the boat and quickly pulling it under near Titov island, said Vu Van Thin, chief administrator of Quang Ninh province. “Crew members tried to stop the water from coming in and alerted the tourists who were sleeping, but the water came in and the boat sank quickly,” he said. “All of the 12 people who died were in the cabins.” There were 27 people, including six crew members, aboard the boat and all have been accounted for, Thin said. The hospital’s deputy director, Giang Quoc Duy, said survivors “were in a panic.” “They were given first aid treatment and have already returned to their hotels,” he said.

Egypt Suez Canal told Iran warship passing scrapped Reuters

ISMAILIA, Egypt – The Suez Canal has been told that plans by two Iranian naval ships to cross the waterway were canceled, an official said on Thursday, removing a potential policy headache for Egypt’s new army rulers. It was not immediately clear which side was behind the cancellation. Any naval vessels passing through the canal, a strategic international shipping route, must first have approval from Egypt’s foreign and defense ministries, officials said.

If the ships had crossed, it would have been the first time since Iran’s 1979 revolution that Iranian warships had passed through the canal, officials said. Iran’s revolution poisoned ties with Egypt, which signed a peace treaty with Israel that year. Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman had said plans for the two Iranian warships to sail through the canal en route to Syria were a “provocation.” He had said the ships were expected to pass through the Suez Canal overnight on Wednesday.

Israel’s state-funded Channel One television said Lieberman, a vociferously far-right partner in the conservative coalition, had spoken out of turn as the Defense Ministry “had preferred to ignore” the ships’ approach. The Suez Canal Authority was “informed today about the cancellation of two scheduled trips of two Iranian warships and no new date was set to cross the Suez as part of the southern convoy coming from the Red Sea,” an Egyptian canal official, who declined to be named, told Reuters.

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

MANAMA, Bahrain – The main opposition group in Bahrain says at least two people are dead after police stormed a square occupied by anti-government protesters. The group, Al Wefaq, says two men were killed when riot police used tear gas and rubber bullets early Thursday to drive out thousands of demonstrators from Pearl Square in the center of the capital Manama. Hospitals across the city are on alert for more causalities. The square had been the hub for protests for sweeping political reforms by Bahrain’s ruling monarchy. There was no official word on deaths or injuries from Bahrain’s authorities. Yudhoyono: Don‘t spread misinterpreted religious teachings Antara

JAKARTA - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has asked religious leaders and government officials concerned to prevent the spread of erroneous interpretations of religious teachings so that people can live peacefully. “We must prevent the spread of mistaken interpretations of religious teachings,” he said in his speech at the commemoration of the Prophet Mohammad`s birthday at the State Palace here on Wednesday evening. He said spreading wrong interpretations of religious teachings would always hurt those who had different views and usually leads to physical conflicts. Therefore, he called on all clerics and government officials concerned to closely monitor every development happening in the community. Efforts to prevent the spread of misinterprated religious teachings must become a priority but must be done in a peaceful manner, he said. Yudhoyono emphasized the importance of the role of clerics in giving the right religious interpretation and therefore he also hoped that they could emu-

late the Prophet Mohammad‘s ways of guiding his followers. He said one of the characteristics of Prophet Mohammad was his civility. “It is the task of clerics, religious preachers and teachers to convey Islamic teachings in a civil manner,” he said. President Yudhoyono hoped clerics would not use harsh words moreover slanders when presenting religious teachings or conveying opinions.

Religious affairs minister Suryadharma Ali meanwhile said at the occasion that slanders often occurred in life including in the life of the state and nation. JAKARTA - Greenpeace Southeast Asia hailed the recent news that the palmoil arm of Sinar Mas, Golden Agri-Resources, would halt the destruction of Indonesia‘s forests previously caused by their operations. “The government must back efforts like those announced today (Feb. 9) by insisting on similar standards across industries operating in forest areas,” said Bustar Maitar, head of Greenpeace`s campaign to protect Indonesian forests, recently. “This could be good news for the forests, endangered species like the orang-utan and for the Indonesian economy,” he said as quoted on the Greenpeace Southeast Asia`s official website. Bustas said protecting Indonesia‘s forests was good for business, the environment and future generations of all Indonesians.

“The need for other palm oil producers to clean up their act is now pressing, for business and environmental reasons,” he added. On paper, the new commitments from Golden Agri were a major step towards ending their involvement in deforestation, he stated. “And if they do make these changes, large areas of forests will be saved. But now they`ve actually got to implement these plans, and we`re watching closely to make sure this happens,” he added. Golden Agri‘s announcement has given a huge boost to the Indonesian President‘s pledge to protect forests and tackle climate change, according to him. “And now the Indonesian Government must support this initiative by stopping any more licenses being granted for forest and peatland clearance, and by reviewing activities in

areas where licenses have already been handed out,” he said. In recent years, Greenpeace revelations showing the destruction caused by Golden Agri-Resources have led to international corporations such as Unilever and Nestle canceling their contracts with the Indonesian palm oil company. However, the current move could signal the start of a shift throughout the industry, and eventually lead to full forest and peatland protection. A key commitment by Golden Agri-Resources is a pledge not to clear ‘High Carbon Storage‘ forest. Under the company‘s new plans, they have set a provisional threshold and will not be developing land which contains over 35 tonnes of carbon per hectare. Importantly, this provisional figure is in line with figures for low carbon development recommended to the Indonesian Government by their own advisers, according to Greenpeace.

BEIJING – Foreign direct investment in China rose 23.4 percent in January from a year earlier, the government said on Thursday, despite an official campaign to stem liquidity and control inflation. China attracted $10.03 billion in foreign investment last month, commerce ministry spokesman Yao Jian told reporters. The figures indicated that a revival in investment continued after growth slowed sharply in August and despite several moves by the government to slow the economy, including last week’s third interest rate hike in four months. The January figure compares to growth of 15.6 percent in December, when $14.03 billion in investment flowed into China. Foreign direct investment hit a full-year record of $105.7 billion in 2010, the government said last month, highlighting growing foreign confidence in the economy despite Beijing’s dampening measures. Debit card fee fight returns to Congress Reuters

WASHINGTON/NEW YORK – Visa and banks will press lawmakers on Thursday for relief from a proposed slashing of debit card processing fees, an issue that has attracted bipartisan support for softening the impact of part of the Dodd-Frank financial law. Banks and card network companies such as Visa Inc and MasterCard Inc have been pleading with the Federal Reserve to change a December proposal that would cut debit processing fee revenue by about 75 percent. But even debit industry sources admit that getting the Fed to significantly ease up on its proposal will be a tough task, leading the industry to focus its sizable lobbying firepower at Capitol Hill. A House Financial Services subcommittee on Thursday will hear from Fed Governor Sarah Raskin and industry representatives on the issue. The Dodd-Frank law passed last year called for debit card fees that are “reasonable and proportionate” to the issuers’ costs, a provision added with the strong support of retail industry groups. The Fed is charged with implementing that provision and in December proposed capping the so-called interchange fees at 12 cents per debit transaction — nearly a 75 percent cut from the 2009 average of 44 cents per transaction. The proposed caps would shave some $13 billion off the industry’s annual $23 billion in debit card processing revenue, according to CardHub.com, and could also terminate some of Visa and MasterCard’s exclusive

processing deals with banks. Card industry lobbyists believe they have a receptive audience among Republicans who now control the House of Representatives. Visa Inc General Counsel Joshua Floum told Reuters on Wednesday that some lawmakers are close to proposing legislation to delay the implementation of the rule, the final version of which is due in April. “We are optimistic that something will come soon given our discussions with various members” of Congress, Floum said, adding that Visa has “reason to believe that there is a lot of sentiment to suspend and study” the law. No lawmaker has stepped forward with a bill, however, and even if the House were to pass legislation it would face stiff resistance in the Senate. Senator Richard Durbin authored the provision, and as a member of the Senate’s Democratic leadership he is in a good position to bat away any challenges to the fee restrictions. In the House, at least, there is some bipartisan support for easing the fee restriction. Democratic Representative Barney Frank, a co-author of the Wall Street reform law, said he supports making some changes. In an interview on Wednesday he said Republicans have approached him about what type of bill he would be open to supporting. Frank said he has told them he does not support delaying the fee restrictions implementation but could support instructing the Fed to include more factors in determining what is a reasonable amount a bank can charge a retailer when a debit card is used.

CULPEPER, Virginia – In a cold underground bunker once packed with enough dollars to replenish the cash supply in the eastern United States in the event of a Soviet nuclear attack, “Gigi” lies silently near “An American in Paris”. In a room next door, a young woman who gave her name as Barbara works on “Little Brother”. Upstairs, one of Barbara’s colleagues is trying to make sense of “The Arab”. This is not a secret US interrogation site, but the state-of-the-art facility where the US Library of Congress holds and preserves the world’s largest collection of films, television programs, radio broadcasts and sound recordings. Last year, the four-million-piece collection at the National AudioVisual Conservation Center (NAVCC), which includes 700,000 reels of film, swelled immeasurably in historical terms as Russia handed over digital copies of 10 US silent movies that were thought to have been lost.

“The Arab”, directed in 1924 by Rex Ingram, who made a star of Rudolf Valentino in “The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse” a few years earlier, was one of the films returned to the United States by the Russia’s state film archives, Gosfilmofond. In the 1920s, movies were made on film containing nitrate, a highly unstable and flammable chemical compound that sparked fires in cinemas when projectors ignited while playing movies. The Class X flash — the largest such category — erupted at 0156 GMT Tuesday, according to the US space agency. “X-class flares are the most powerful of all solar events that can trigger radio blackouts and longlasting radiation storms,” disturbing telecommunications and electric grids, NASA said. NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory saw a large coronal mass ejection (CME) associated with the flash that is blasting toward Earth at about 560 miles per second (900 kilometers per second), it said. The charged plasma particles were expected to reach the planet’s orbit at 0300 GMT Thursday. The flare spread from Active Region 1158 in the sun’s southern hemisphere, which had so far lagged behind the northern hemisphere in flash activity. It followed several smaller flares in recent days. “The calm before the storm,” read a statement on the US National Weather Service Space Weather Prediction Service. “Three CMEs are enroute, all a part of the Radio Blackout events on February 13, 14, and 15 (UTC). The last of the three seems to be the fastest and may catch both of the forerunners about mid to late ... Rare leatherback turtle spotted in Indonesia Associated Press Writer

JAKARTA, Indonesia – Conservationists say they got a rare glimpse of a 6-foot (2-meter) -long leatherback — the world’s most endangered sea turtle — together with dozens of eggs in western Indonesia. Khairul Amra, a member of a local conservation group, said Thursday that the giant turtle was spotted on a beach on Sumatra island over the weekend just before it plunged into the water. Soon after 65 eggs thought to belong to the leatherback were found in a nest — the third such discovery on the same beach this year. Leatherbacks, which can grow up to 9 feet (3 meters) long, have roamed the oceans for 100 million years, but the globe-trotting sea turtles today number only around 30,000. Their biggest threats are commercial fishing and egg hunters.

Cavaliers avenge 55-point defeat against Lakers Associated Press Writer

CLEVELAND – The Lakers hit the All-Star break broken. Looking nothing like two-time defending NBA champions, they dropped their third straight game, a stunning 104-99 loss Wednesday night to the Cleveland Cavaliers — the league’s worst team, which avenged a 55-point embarrassment against Los Angeles last month. Ramon Sessions came off the bench and scored a season-high 32 points for the Cavs, who were beaten 112-57 by the Lakers on Jan. 11. That loss was No. 11 in a league-record streak that eventually reached 26 before Cleveland ended it last week with an overtime win against L.A.’s less-heralded squad, the Clippers. Pau Gasol had 30 points and 20 rebounds for the Lakers. Playing the finale of a sevengame road trip, the Lakers spent much of the night looking as if they were already on vacation. They threw errant passes, forced outside shots and couldn’t catch the Cavs down the stretch despite a frantic comeback. “It’s back to the drawing board,” said Lamar Odom, who was asked what’s at

the top of the team’s to-do list. “Defense. Cohesiveness. Our chemistry on offense. I’m not that worried. I think it’s things we can fix.” Kobe Bryant finished with 17 points on 8-of-25 shooting. After the final horn, the Lakers walked slowly toward their locker room and a trip home not knowing what might happen next. With the trading deadline just a week away, the rumors involving Denver star Carmelo Anthony will likely heat up. This much is clear: Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak needs to do something to awaken his team. The Cavs, on the other hand, reached the season’s unofficial midpoint on a high. This was their best effort of the season. They played with the energy coach Byron Scott wants every night, and they gave their dedicated fans a taste of what could be ahead.

Raonic ousted second seed Verdasco 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7/5) at the $1.32 million event, booking a second-round date against Czech Radek Stepanek. Dispute over London 2012 marathon route resolved Associated Press Writer

LONDON – The legal dispute over the marathon route for the 2012 London Olympics has been resolved after organizers promised to help provide tickets and jobs to the area that was cut out of the race. The marathon will start and finish in front of Buckingham Palace and include three loops of central London. The race was originally

scheduled to go into east London, but organizers changed the route to avoid gridlocked streets on one of the busiest days of the games. The local Tower Hamlets council in east London was seeking a legal review of the change. A statement from London 2012 on Wednesday says “the council has decided to drop the proceedings” following the agreement to help the area benefit from the Olympics.

Red Bull open about Webber’s future Red Bull Racing boss Christian Horner says he sees no reason why Mark Webber could not stay at the the team beyond 2011 if he continues to perform as strongly as last year. The Australian renewed his contract with the Milton Keynes-based squad just for one year, meaning he will be free at the end of the current season.

Horner has made it clear that Webber will not approach the year thinking this is his final season with Red Bull, and insisted they will talk about the future as the year develops. Webber won four races in 2010 and led the championship for much of the latter part of the season, and Horner suggested the Australian could stay onboard if he continued to perform strongly. “Mark isn’t approaching this year that [as if] this is his final year,” Horner told the Reuters news agency. “I think we both agreed to keep the contract on a yearly basis at this

stage in his career because it’s important for us to see that he’s got the speed, the motivation, the hunger and commitment. “All of which look undiminished at the moment. If anything, [they are] burning brighter than ever. “So we’ll see how this season develops and obviously as we head towards the latter part of the summer then we’ll start to talk about the following season. If he’s delivering at the same level as he did in 2010 then why not?” Horner also admitted that Webber found it hard for his team-mate Sebastian Vettel to come back and

claim the title in the final race of the season. “It was tough for Mark to take,” Horner said. “But Mark’s mentally a tough competitor and I think he will use that inwardly as motivation to come back even more determined, more focused and I think he’s come back leaner, lighter and extremely motivated.”

Shanghai extends grand prix deal SHANGHAI has agreed a deal to host Formula 1 races until 2017, ending months of speculation about the future of the Chinese Grand Prix. Although work still needs to be completed on the circuit for it to pass an FIA safety inspection ahead of this year’s race, the Shanghai Sports Bureau has announced that a fresh deal has been agreed for the event. Zhao Wen, vice mayor of Shanghai, told local media on Wednesday that officials had managed to negotiate a reduced rate for the event in a bid to keep it on the calendar. “F1 is a calling card for Shanghai,” he

said. “I am confident about the success of the event in the years ahead.” Shanghai track bosses have also

agreed to reduce ticket prices for the grand prix in a bid to attract more spectators.
